- 0:14Speaker 2: we'd like to bring you the smartest people around. John Fund,
- 0:17Speaker 2: the great columnist National Review and also the Committee Unleash Prosperity,
- 0:23Speaker 2: does great work there, and he wrote the best book
- 0:26Speaker 2: on the subject of our elections. You've got to get
- 0:30Speaker 2: his book. It's called Our Broken Elections by John Fund.
- 0:33Speaker 2: You can get it on Amazon. John Fund, how you
- 0:37Speaker 2: doing a pleasure?
- 0:39Speaker 1: Thank you?
- 0:40Speaker 2: Hey, voter ID the fight sign.
- 0:43Speaker 1: Luckily I'm in Florida, so I don't have to sit
- 0:45Speaker 1: through your snow. But you know, I hope, I hope
- 0:48Speaker 1: your listeners are warm and at home.
- 0:49Speaker 2: You're missing all the fun here, and don't try to
- 0:53Speaker 2: get back. The airport's going to be closed for three days, but.
- 0:57Speaker 1: I'm not. I'm not due until Friday.
- 0:59Speaker 2: I'll be fine, You'll be Hey, this voter ID thing,
- 1:02Speaker 2: it gets more and more and more ridiculous. Obviously you
- 1:05Speaker 2: need an ID to buy anything anywhere, to get into
- 1:08Speaker 2: any office building. It's obviously the Democrats up to no
- 1:12Speaker 2: good with this voter ID stuff. Am I right.
- 1:17Speaker 1: Well, let's look at the New York City. We learned
- 1:20Speaker 1: a few years ago when Deblasio was mayor how much
- 1:24Speaker 1: fraud there was in New York City elections. The Democratic
- 1:28Speaker 1: appointee to the Board of Elections from Manhattan was accosted
- 1:32Speaker 1: by James O'Keefe at a party and he admitted how
- 1:35Speaker 1: much fraud there was in New York. He said, you know,
- 1:37Speaker 1: in buses they rent them in Chinatown, they take up
- 1:40Speaker 1: pick up the homeless, they give them packs of cigarettes,
- 1:42Speaker 1: they drive them from polling place to polling place, and
- 1:46Speaker 1: that's just one way that they do fraud. And Deblasio's
- 1:50Speaker 1: response was not to question him about the fraud, but
- 1:53Speaker 1: to fire him. He fired his own Democratic appointee to
- 1:56Speaker 1: the Board of Elections. So we know there's fraud. Now,
- 2:01Speaker 1: what does Mayor Mandami do. Well. The mayor says voter
- 2:05Speaker 1: ID is racist. He agrees with Chuck Schumer that it's
- 2:08Speaker 1: Jim Crow two point zero. But when he announces that
- 2:12Speaker 1: the city needs emergency snow shovelers yesterday, what does he say?
- 2:18Speaker 1: It's nineteen dollars an hour, you know, good wages, maybe
- 2:22Speaker 1: not union wages. But good wages, and you only have
- 2:26Speaker 1: to bring five forms of ID to sign up. You
- 2:29Speaker 1: need two photos, you need two IDs and your Social
- 2:35Speaker 1: Security card and then you can snow. Then you're allowed
- 2:38Speaker 1: to shovel snow, which is of course a high security,
- 2:42Speaker 1: high impact job. So the hypocrisy here is beyond rich.
- 2:50Speaker 2: Isn't it also the most racist thing on earth? For
- 2:53Speaker 2: Democrats to say, well, a black voter can't figure out
- 2:55Speaker 2: how to get an idea they wouldn't be capable of getting.
- 2:58Speaker 2: How racist is well?
- 2:59Speaker 1: The Brennan the Brennan Center, which is the liberal think
- 3:03Speaker 1: tank that does these issues, say twenty five percent of
- 3:05Speaker 1: African Americans lack of the Loder idea, an idea that
- 3:08Speaker 1: would be accepted at the polls. That's ridiculous. Everybody knows that.
- 3:13Speaker 1: I mean, you can't sign up for Medicare, you can't
- 3:15Speaker 1: sign up for catching a check, you can't travel, you
- 3:20Speaker 1: can't do anything with that ide Today, it's preposterous to
- 3:23Speaker 1: say that twenty five percent of African Americans lack of ID,
- 3:26Speaker 1: and of course African Americans think it's preposterous. If you
- 3:29Speaker 1: look at the polls, the most recent ones of the
- 3:31Speaker 1: Washington Post survey and and the Pew Research survey seventy
- 3:38Speaker 1: one percent of African Americans support photo idea at the polls,
- 3:42Speaker 1: sixty seven percent of Hispanics and eighty percent of Asian Americans.
- 3:48Speaker 1: So if it's so racist, if it's so discriminatory, why
- 3:52Speaker 1: is it that they all of these minority groups have
- 3:55Speaker 1: false consciousness and believe something which isn't true.
- 4:01Speaker 2: He didn't Obama require photo idea to get Obamacare.
- 4:06Speaker 1: Well, of course you need the idea to get Obamacare.
- 4:08Speaker 1: You need ideed for everything. In fact, if you march
- 4:11Speaker 1: down to the to the city hall to get married,
- 4:13Speaker 1: and that's you know, marriage is a constitutional right, whether
- 4:16Speaker 1: it's gay or straight marriage, you've got to have an id.
- 4:19Speaker 2: Yeah. Well, so what do you think will happen whill
- 4:22Speaker 2: we get the Can the federal government do something to
- 4:25Speaker 2: make it uniform voter idea require?
- 4:27Speaker 1: First of all, we don't. We don't want to follow
- 4:30Speaker 1: what Joe Biden did, which is he tried to nationalize
- 4:33Speaker 1: the elections. He tried to take away the power of
- 4:35Speaker 1: the states to run the elections and federalize it in Washington.
- 4:38Speaker 1: We don't want that. So what the law that's before
- 4:42Speaker 1: the Senate now it passes past the House. The law
- 4:45Speaker 1: says the federal government, if it's going to give money
- 4:48Speaker 1: the people to the states for voting machines and improving
- 4:52Speaker 1: their technology, in response, you have to have you have
- 4:55Speaker 1: to require that the states ask for ID to vote
- 5:00Speaker 1: the polls. And when people first register, they have to
- 5:03Speaker 1: prove their citizenship. And there are many ways to prove
- 5:06Speaker 1: your citizenship. You can do it with a birth certificate, which,
- 5:09Speaker 1: by the way, you can get online. Now you can
- 5:11Speaker 1: go through almost all the records and if you're less
- 5:13Speaker 1: than eighty years old, you're going to find your certificate
- 5:15Speaker 1: online and can get a copy sent to you. And
- 5:18Speaker 1: I'll look, I'll say it should be free, you know.
- 5:21Speaker 1: I think that everybody should have access to a free
- 5:23Speaker 1: ID and then they can use it to vote. And
- 5:28Speaker 1: that's why it's so easy, that's why so overwhelming majorities
- 5:31Speaker 1: of every American demographic group supported. In fact, the last
- 5:35Speaker 1: time I checked it was the Washington Post survey. There
- 5:38Speaker 1: were forty different categories of voters, and the only category
- 5:42Speaker 1: which voter ID did not have a majority of it
- 5:45Speaker 1: had a plurality support, more supportive it than not. There
- 5:48Speaker 1: were few not sure was the extremely liberal group I
- 5:52Speaker 1: call those MSNBC and ms NOW voters. Other than that,
- 5:57Speaker 1: everyone supports voter ID.
- 6:00Speaker 2: So hey, maybe maybe it's too early to ask you this, Well,
- 6:02Speaker 2: how does it look for the midterms? What do you
- 6:03Speaker 2: think happens in the midterms?
- 6:06Speaker 1: If the election were today, would not be good. But
- 6:09Speaker 1: the election is not held today, It's held in November,
- 6:12Speaker 1: and the economy will go through a lot of generations
- 6:14Speaker 1: before then. President Trump, you know, has been known to
- 6:18Speaker 1: pull rabbits out of hats, but you know he's gonna
- 6:21Speaker 1: have to be a pretty big rabbit. He has made
- 6:23Speaker 1: some tactical mistakes, Mark, and unfortunately I think he is
- 6:29Speaker 1: anger sometimes gets ahead of his cold calculated self interest.
- 6:35Speaker 1: And the problem with the tariffs is this. The tariffs
- 6:39Speaker 1: are very very popular with his base. Eighty seven percent
- 6:43Speaker 1: of MAGA Republicans like the tariffs, but forty three percent
- 6:48Speaker 1: of non MAGA Republicans support the tariffs. So there's a
- 6:51Speaker 1: big gap there, and there's still a lot of non
- 6:53Speaker 1: MAGA Republicans. So here's the problem. Overall, independents hate the
- 6:58Speaker 1: tariffs by two to one, and they're the ones who
- 7:02Speaker 1: decide the election in these thirty swing house races. I
- 7:06Speaker 1: think the Supreme Court handed the president a gift. It
- 7:09Speaker 1: gives him an excuse to blame someone else for scaling
- 7:12Speaker 1: back the tariffs and not making them the big issue
- 7:16Speaker 1: in the campaign. Here's the problem we have, Mark, He's
- 7:19Speaker 1: imposed this new fifteen percent tariff, but it expires in
- 7:22Speaker 1: five months. That puts us right in the middle of
- 7:25Speaker 1: the fall campaign. Congress will then have to vote on
- 7:27Speaker 1: the tariffs to extend them, otherwise they go away immediately.
- 7:31Speaker 1: Trump will put pressure on the Republican congressman to vote
- 7:34Speaker 1: for them, but enough will not vote for them that
- 7:36Speaker 1: he'll go down to defeat. He'll look weak. The tariffs
- 7:39Speaker 1: will be the issue in the fall election. It won't
- 7:42Speaker 1: be ice, It'll be the tariffs. And people who worry
- 7:45Speaker 1: about affordability and the high price of things are going
- 7:48Speaker 1: to say Trump wanted tariffs, he just forced Congress to
- 7:51Speaker 1: vote on them, and I don't want high prices, so
- 7:54Speaker 1: I'm going to not vote Republican or stay home.
- 7:56Speaker 2: Well, now, what can he do tomorrow? I'd stay to
- 7:59Speaker 2: the Union's beach too, you fix that? Can he do
- 8:01Speaker 2: something tomorrow night to really make.
- 8:03Speaker 1: If he wants to pull a rabbit out of the hat,
- 8:05Speaker 1: Here's the biggest rabbit he can pull. Right now, everything
- 8:08Speaker 1: in our economy is indexed. You know, your Social Security
- 8:12Speaker 1: payment is indexed, your tax brackets are indexed. Everything is
- 8:16Speaker 1: indexed for inflation. The one thing that isn't indexed for
- 8:19Speaker 1: inflation is capital gains. If you buy an asset, whether
- 8:23Speaker 1: it's a painting, a house, a stock, it's not indexed
- 8:26Speaker 1: for inflation as it appreciates in value. In other words,
- 8:29Speaker 1: if you sell something, you're selling it at the price
- 8:32Speaker 1: it is today, not the price you paid for it.
- 8:35Speaker 1: So what the president can do, and he could do
- 8:37Speaker 1: it with housing, but I think he should do it
- 8:39Speaker 1: with the economy as a whole. He should say, if
- 8:42Speaker 1: you sell something, you're going to pay the capital gains
- 8:46Speaker 1: on the original price, not the price you settle down.
- 8:48Speaker 1: This will unlock housing all over the country. There are
- 8:51Speaker 1: people sitting in houses mark that aren't selling because they
- 8:54Speaker 1: don't want to pay the capital gains because there's you know,
- 8:57Speaker 1: your housing exemption goes away after a while. If if
- 9:00Speaker 1: he did that, that would be turbo charging the economy.
- 9:03Speaker 1: Secretary of State Treasury, Secretary's Treasury Besson has done the numbers.
- 9:06Speaker 1: Would turbo charge the economy? Would have a rush of
- 9:09Speaker 1: GDP growth and people would be freed up. They could
- 9:13Speaker 1: get they could change assets, they could buy new assets.
- 9:16Speaker 1: It would be a boon and it would be a
- 9:18Speaker 1: political winner.
- 9:20Speaker 2: Wow. Good stuff. Well, John Fund brilliant as always. Get
