- 1:43Raymond Aaron: His name is Oren Hudson, but he calls himself Oren Checkmate Hudson.
- 1:49Raymond Aaron: Why?
- 1:50Raymond Aaron: Because somehow he got the message that he should take underserved and underprivileged kids who were in the worst jeopardy of getting into trouble with gangs, with guns, with drugs.
- 2:09Raymond Aaron: And he took it upon himself to save them.
- 2:13Raymond Aaron: How?
- 2:14Raymond Aaron: By teaching them chess.
- 2:17Raymond Aaron: Now, I want you to think of underprivileged kids in the worst neighborhoods of America and try to tell them, go to school every single day, go to every single class, pass every single subject.
- 2:29Raymond Aaron: Don't swear.
- 2:30Raymond Aaron: Don't do drugs.
- 2:31Raymond Aaron: Don't join gangs.
- 2:32Raymond Aaron: And if you do all of that, I'll teach you chess.
- 2:35Raymond Aaron: You might say, the guy's nuts.
- 2:38Raymond Aaron: No kid would agree to that.
- 2:40Raymond Aaron: And yet, he's saved thousands of lives.
- 2:44Raymond Aaron: Thousands.
- 2:45Raymond Aaron: He saved them from drugs and gangs and guns.
- 2:50Raymond Aaron: And as a result, he's won more awards than anyone I know.
- 2:55Raymond Aaron: Anyone.
- 2:55Raymond Aaron: The Toastmasters Community Leadership Award, the Nonprofit Trinity Award, and the biggest
- 3:01Raymond Aaron: one in the whole list, the FBI Distinguished Community Leader Award, and the National
- 3:08Raymond Aaron: Dr. Martin Luther King Award, Toastmasters International Communication and Leadership
- 3:13Raymond Aaron: Award.
- 3:14Raymond Aaron: And the list goes on and on for pages, because as soon as people hear what he does, they are so deeply moved, as was I when I bumped into him.
- 3:26Raymond Aaron: And I've loved this guy for decades.
- 3:29Raymond Aaron: He knows all of my world famous friends like Les Brown.
- 3:33Raymond Aaron: And I am bringing him to you.
- 3:36Raymond Aaron: Stay tuned.
- 3:37Raymond Aaron: I know that sometimes when you're listening to a podcast, you can be distracted and do other things.
- 3:43Raymond Aaron: But don't do that. Don't do that to Oren Checkmate Hudson, my guest.
- 3:49Raymond Aaron: Oren, are you on the air?
- 3:51Orrin Hudson: Yes, sir. I'm here, Dr. Raymond.
- 3:54Raymond Aaron: Wow. I love you to call me doctor. That's okay. That's okay. You can if you wish.
- 4:01Raymond Aaron: So, Oren, tell us about this amazing service that you provide.
- 4:06Orrin Hudson: Well, first of all, let me clarify what the word doctor means.
- 4:09Orrin Hudson: Doctor means teacher, and you're the best teacher I've ever met.
- 4:12Orrin Hudson: I met you when you were on stage with Donald Trump and you beat everybody out.
- 4:17Orrin Hudson: You were having people laughing and you were doing it at the George World Hunger Center.
- 4:21Orrin Hudson: I don't know if you remember that.
- 4:23Orrin Hudson: That was about a while back.
- 4:24Orrin Hudson: You and Donald Trump was on stage and you told the house down because you did your thing.
- 4:30Orrin Hudson: You had everybody laughing.
- 4:32Orrin Hudson: You are the best when it comes to PowerPoint and making people laugh.
- 4:36Orrin Hudson: So I praise you for that.
- 4:38Raymond Aaron: Thank you.
- 4:39Raymond Aaron: Now let's talk about you.
- 4:42Orrin Hudson: Well, I use chess as a metaphor to teach young people to not do the first thing that pops in your head.
- 4:49Orrin Hudson: The first thing that pops in your head is usually a trap.
- 4:52Orrin Hudson: So I teach six magic words.
- 4:54Orrin Hudson: Take time to think things through.
- 5:01Orrin Hudson: Got it.
- 5:03Raymond Aaron: Because the first move may not be the best move.
- 5:06Orrin Hudson: It may not be.
- 5:07Orrin Hudson: The computer will say, make this move, make this move, make this move.
- 5:11Orrin Hudson: And then after a few minutes, the computer said, no, don't make that move.
- 5:14Orrin Hudson: If I make that move, I lose 15 moves down the road.
- 5:17Orrin Hudson: The computer would change his mind because he'd see a better move.
- 5:21Orrin Hudson: I was doing something the other day on AI.
- 5:25Orrin Hudson: And AI made some mistakes.
- 5:26Orrin Hudson: You made a mistake.
- 5:27Orrin Hudson: And it said, okay, give me more time to think.
- 5:29Orrin Hudson: And the thing said, need more time to think.
- 5:32Orrin Hudson: So the longer it thinks, the better the answer is.
- 5:35Orrin Hudson: So what am I teaching children?
- 5:37Orrin Hudson: I'm teaching children your first crack at anything.
- 5:40Orrin Hudson: It's never your best.
- 5:43Orrin Hudson: Michael Jordan, his first crack at basketball, he got cut.
- 5:49Orrin Hudson: Wow.
- 5:50Orrin Hudson: Yeah, so things take time to manifest, and you've got to have time and grade.
- 5:55Orrin Hudson: Time and grade means I've been doing this a minute, so I've been here, done that.
- 6:00Orrin Hudson: I got the T-shirt, so I show children how to navigate through the complexities of life and how to make the next move the best move.
- 6:10Raymond Aaron: I want you to give me an example. Think of a particular young person, boy or girl, tell me their situation. Tell me about their parenting or their home life and their school life and their gangs or guns or whatever. And tell me exactly what happened. Tell me about their winning awards going to other cities and winning chess tournaments. Tell us a wonderful example.
- 6:38Orrin Hudson: Well, his name is Aaron Porter. The judge gave him one more chance to get his life together because he was in school and he came home one day.
- 6:51Orrin Hudson: His dad, who'd been locked up for 16 years, was back home. And him and his dad got in an argument, got in a fight.
- 7:00Orrin Hudson: And the judge charged him with attempted murder on his own father.
- 7:04Orrin Hudson: And the judge gave him one more chance to get his life together.
- 7:07Orrin Hudson: And they reached out to me and said, Warren, can you come over and help work with this kid?
- 7:11Orrin Hudson: And I came over and coached him.
- 7:13Orrin Hudson: And we spent a lot of time together and training.
- 7:18Orrin Hudson: And we traveled to another city, which is about two hours from Atlanta to Augusta, Georgia.
- 7:23Orrin Hudson: And we brought back the state championship.
- 7:25Orrin Hudson: It wasn't easy because when we got there, Aaron Porter lost his queen in the match.
- 7:31Orrin Hudson: But what we teach is you don't lose the game when the pawn takes your queen.
- 7:36Orrin Hudson: You lose the game when the king falls.
- 7:40Orrin Hudson: And so even though he lost his queen, remember what we teach in class,
- 7:44Orrin Hudson: don't focus on what you lost.
- 7:46Orrin Hudson: Focus on what you have left and don't look back and keep it moving
- 7:50Orrin Hudson: at the end of the winter state championship.
- 7:52Orrin Hudson: So Aaron Porter, almost with Adele,
- 7:55Orrin Hudson: attempted murder on his own father.
- 7:56Orrin Hudson: We turned this life around.
- 7:57Orrin Hudson: And I'm living my dream because teaching children
- 8:00Orrin Hudson: to think makes my heart sing.
- 8:08Raymond Aaron: Wow.
- 8:09Raymond Aaron: Well, I love teaching also.
- 8:11Raymond Aaron: But you are teaching at such a greater depth.
- 8:15Raymond Aaron: Chess is just the game that you use to teach them life.
- 8:21Raymond Aaron: And what an amazing, where'd you get this idea?
- 8:26Orrin Hudson: Well, I'm going to be honest with you.
- 8:27Orrin Hudson: I was a gang member in my teens.
- 8:29Orrin Hudson: I was 14 years old.
- 8:31Orrin Hudson: And a teacher pulled Me to the side and said, listen, Oren,
- 8:33Orrin Hudson: he said, you're following the follower.
- 8:35Orrin Hudson: I said what do you mean?
- 8:36Orrin Hudson: He said you're doing everything they say doing.
- 8:37Orrin Hudson: I was.
- 8:38Orrin Hudson: They say do this, you do it.
- 8:39Orrin Hudson: They say do this, you do it.
- 8:40Orrin Hudson: I was following the follower.
- 8:42Orrin Hudson: He said I'm going to teach you how to think independently,
- 8:44Orrin Hudson: how to think for yourself I said what do you mean?
- 8:47Orrin Hudson: He said I'm going to teach you chess.
- 8:50Orrin Hudson: I said wait a minute.
- 8:51Orrin Hudson: I'm a Checker guru
- 8:53Orrin Hudson: I'm the hometown Checker guru
- 8:55Orrin Hudson: He said Checkers
- 8:57Orrin Hudson: He said Checkers are using half on the board
- 9:00Orrin Hudson: He said Checkers
- 9:01Orrin Hudson: He said Yeah it's half on the board
- 9:03Orrin Hudson: He said Chess are using every
- 9:05Orrin Hudson: single square on the board
- 9:08Orrin Hudson: He said Checkers
- 9:09Orrin Hudson: is all men
- 9:10Orrin Hudson: He said Chess the queen
- 9:13Orrin Hudson: is most powerful piece on the board
- 9:15Orrin Hudson: I said let's get on with the classes
- 9:20Raymond Aaron: Alright
- 9:21Raymond Aaron: a teacher redirected your life.
- 9:24Orrin Hudson: I owe my life to James Edge,
- 9:26Orrin Hudson: a white teacher in an all-black high school,
- 9:28Orrin Hudson: Hayes High in Birmingham, Alabama,
- 9:31Orrin Hudson: who taught me six magic words,
- 9:33Orrin Hudson: take time to think things through.
- 9:37Orrin Hudson: Wow.
- 9:39Orrin Hudson: Wow.
- 9:39Orrin Hudson: And you've written a book on it.
- 9:41Orrin Hudson: Tell me about your book.
- 9:43Orrin Hudson: Les Brown and Jack Tampier
- 9:44Orrin Hudson: wrote the foreword for my book.
- 9:46Orrin Hudson: It's 240 pages.
- 9:48Orrin Hudson: And I thank God for people like Les Brown and Jack Canfield.
- 9:53Orrin Hudson: Got them on speed dial.
- 9:54Orrin Hudson: But the main thing is they know my heart.
- 9:58Orrin Hudson: They know what I'm about.
- 9:59Orrin Hudson: And I beat both of them.
- 10:00Orrin Hudson: Both of them, Jack Canfield and Les Brown.
- 10:02Orrin Hudson: They both beat Chess.
- 10:04Orrin Hudson: When I first met Les about 40 years ago, he said,
- 10:07Orrin Hudson: Orin, I can beat you in Chess.
- 10:08Orrin Hudson: I said, you can.
- 10:09Orrin Hudson: I said, let's go.
- 10:10Orrin Hudson: So I beat him up pretty bad.
- 10:11Orrin Hudson: And we've been friends ever since.
- 10:15Raymond Aaron: Tell me the title and subtitle of your book.
- 10:18Orrin Hudson: The title is One Move at a Time, How to Play and Win at Chess and Life.
- 10:23Orrin Hudson: So it's got a chapter in there about legacy.
- 10:27Orrin Hudson: It's got a chapter in there about 21 life lessons.
- 10:30Orrin Hudson: It talks about a famous game why people are the top Russian grandmasters in the world.
- 10:35Orrin Hudson: His name is Rashid Ziyathanov.
- 10:37Orrin Hudson: So I'm living my dream because chess saved my life.
- 10:42Orrin Hudson: And James Edge gave me the winning edge, and I'm just paying it forward.
- 10:46Orrin Hudson: I train over 100,000 kids.
- 10:48Orrin Hudson: My goal is a million.
- 10:49Orrin Hudson: And I won't stop until I drop.
- 10:53Raymond Aaron: Wow.
- 10:55Raymond Aaron: Well, now, I know that you're devoting your entire life to this.
- 11:01Raymond Aaron: But how do you survive?
- 11:02Raymond Aaron: Do you have a job?
- 11:04Raymond Aaron: Tell me about your life.
- 11:06Orrin Hudson: I don't have a job, but people hire me to speak from time to time.
- 11:09Orrin Hudson: And people see me.
- 11:10Orrin Hudson: I've been on TV a lot.
- 11:11Orrin Hudson: And TV has blessed me.
- 11:12Orrin Hudson: And because of TV, I've gotten donations.
- 11:15Orrin Hudson: And people like Les Brown has helped me a lot and Jack Canfield.
- 11:19Orrin Hudson: And then other people.
- 11:20Orrin Hudson: I do good because I've got a lot of seeds out there.
- 11:23Orrin Hudson: In fact, every week I'm always doing something for the community and giving back.
- 11:28Orrin Hudson: So I get paid.
- 11:30Orrin Hudson: God blesses me.
- 11:31Orrin Hudson: And people are always trying to support the work I'm doing.
- 11:35Orrin Hudson: So we welcome people to go to our website, beesomeone.org.
- 11:40Orrin Hudson: And we're playing a game without pieces.
- 11:42Orrin Hudson: God has been faithful and God has honored my steps because I care about the world and I teach the children.
- 11:50Orrin Hudson: And so my life depends on it because it does.
- 11:54Raymond Aaron: Wow.
- 11:56Raymond Aaron: Wow.
- 11:56Raymond Aaron: You just do good in the world and enough money comes to you.
- 12:02Orrin Hudson: Right.
- 12:03Orrin Hudson: Yeah.
- 12:03Orrin Hudson: And yeah, you just do good.
- 12:04Orrin Hudson: Every week I get a miracle.
- 12:06Orrin Hudson: I mean, I'll go out to eat.
- 12:09Orrin Hudson: Oh, that's a word.
- 12:11Orrin Hudson: I'm paying his meal.
- 12:12Orrin Hudson: I mean, it's just God provides.
- 12:15Orrin Hudson: Every week I get a miracle.
- 12:17Orrin Hudson: Every week I get some type of miracle.
- 12:20Orrin Hudson: And that's why I tell people, if you do good, good will follow you.
- 12:25Orrin Hudson: Pass your bread on the water, and then what will come back to you multiply.
- 12:31Raymond Aaron: Well, an example was I held a huge summit, World Prosper Summit, on the weekend.
- 12:38Raymond Aaron: And I noticed you were there.
- 12:41Raymond Aaron: you didn't ask any questions i just noticed your name on the list amongst thousands of people i said
- 12:48Raymond Aaron: darn it i miss that guy and so on my own i contacted you and as a result we do we're doing
- 12:56Raymond Aaron: this interview which is going to help you in book sales and in donations and so that's an example of
- 13:02Orrin Hudson: how i mean i met you 15 years ago well you you can track it back because you can say when was i
- 13:10Orrin Hudson: Donald Trump on stage and you you told a house now you were the best speaker there so can you
- 13:17Orrin Hudson: you can track that was it 2004 2007 I don't know when was it I don't know 50 I don't know what year
- 13:24Orrin Hudson: it was but you were here in Atlanta on stage at the World Congress Center yeah yeah and I did a
- 13:31Raymond Aaron: bang-up job and people love me and the best blessing is that you made sure that you met me
- 13:39Raymond Aaron: And when you came to me, I said, who is this guy?
- 13:42Raymond Aaron: And you started telling me your wisdom, started telling me what you're doing in your life, how you're dedicating your life to teaching.
- 13:50Raymond Aaron: And I said, big deal.
- 13:51Raymond Aaron: I don't dedicate my life to teaching, but you dedicate your life at a whole different level.
- 13:57Raymond Aaron: I mean, teaching is the thing that I love doing more than anything.
- 14:01Raymond Aaron: But for you, teaching is your life.
- 14:05Raymond Aaron: Teaching these kids so that they turn their life around.
- 14:10Raymond Aaron: No guns, no gangs, no drugs, attending school, no swearing, being polite.
- 14:20Raymond Aaron: Like if I walked up to a kid in a bad neighborhood and I said, be polite, I would expect him to laugh at me and maybe to injure me.
- 14:31Raymond Aaron: And yet they respect you.
- 14:33Raymond Aaron: They love you.
- 14:35Raymond Aaron: Not, well, tell me, at first, does your reputation precede you and they say, I want in?
- 14:41Raymond Aaron: Or at first, they say, what are you kidding?
- 14:43Raymond Aaron: I'm not doing all that good stuff.
- 14:45Orrin Hudson: What is it like most of the time?
- 14:46Orrin Hudson: I remember doing some training for this movie star, Jane Fonda.
- 14:52Orrin Hudson: And a lot of the kids didn't want to learn chess.
- 14:55Orrin Hudson: They didn't want to do it.
- 14:56Orrin Hudson: But when they saw the smaller kids learning, they go, wait a minute.
- 15:00Orrin Hudson: They can do it.
- 15:01Orrin Hudson: I can do it.
- 15:01Orrin Hudson: And so everybody started getting involved.
- 15:03Orrin Hudson: And I make it fun and exciting.
- 15:05Orrin Hudson: I have a rap song.
- 15:07Orrin Hudson: I'm always in poverty.
- 15:09Orrin Hudson: And I love sharing wisdom.
- 15:12Orrin Hudson: I love showing people how to make the right move.
- 15:15Orrin Hudson: My message is brains before bullets.
- 15:17Orrin Hudson: Think it out.
- 15:18Orrin Hudson: Don't shoot it out.
- 15:19Orrin Hudson: The only way to fight is to use your head.
- 15:21Orrin Hudson: Man up.
- 15:22Orrin Hudson: Stand up.
- 15:23Orrin Hudson: Pull your pants up.
- 15:25Raymond Aaron: I want you to say that again because I love it.
- 15:28Raymond Aaron: Which one?
- 15:29Raymond Aaron: Man up.
- 15:30Orrin Hudson: The whole thing?
- 15:31Orrin Hudson: brains before bullets, think it out, don't shoot it out. The only way to fight is to use your head.
- 15:38Raymond Aaron: Man up, stand up, pull your pants up. Oh man, I love that. That's like the best collection of
- 15:45Raymond Aaron: one-liners that ever existed. Now, tell me about the two words, be someone. How did that come from?
- 15:54Orrin Hudson: Abraham Lincoln, his mother, her last words on the planet to Abraham Lincoln was be someone.
- 15:59Orrin Hudson: And even though Abraham had failed many, many times to run of a public office, he took those two words, each of them went all to the White House.
- 16:07Orrin Hudson: I understand my assignment. My assignment is to empower our young people to be someone.
- 16:12Orrin Hudson: You know, your mind is a pearl. You can change the world. Be all you can be. Never settle for less than you can be.
- 16:19Orrin Hudson: You can do this. You can do it here. You can do it now. You have everything you need to succeed.
- 16:24Orrin Hudson: You have everything you need to be someone.
- 16:28Raymond Aaron: Wow. And you've named your nonprofit organization, BeSomeone.org.
- 16:36Raymond Aaron: BeSomeone.org.
- 16:37Raymond Aaron: Dot org. And I was just scrolling through it and I love it.
- 16:41Raymond Aaron: There's so much wisdom. There's testimonial stories.
- 16:45Raymond Aaron: There's, there's a list of all of your awards. My gosh, it goes on for pages.
- 16:50Orrin Hudson: Well, thank you, Miss. My George, I've been on,
- 16:52Orrin Hudson: I got the George W. Bush award by the White House.
- 16:55Orrin Hudson: got the FBI award and I won an award the other day.
- 17:00Orrin Hudson: I can't even remember what was the champion award from, yeah.
- 17:03Orrin Hudson: So it was Atlanta business league gave me the men of distinction award.
- 17:08Orrin Hudson: So I just, that's just happening. Love the day,
- 17:11Orrin Hudson: but I'm living my dream because it's so rewarding or getting kids who are lost
- 17:17Orrin Hudson: on the right track. It's so, it's so refreshing because you know what we,
- 17:24Orrin Hudson: Everyone is you. I tell people all the time. When I was a state trooper, I had the blue light, the badge, the bulletproof vest, but everybody I stopped, I treated them like the most important person in the world. Here's why. What you sincerely desire for others will happen for you.
- 17:42Orrin Hudson: Yes. I get a kick out of being a blessing to people. I just, I, I, I love it. You know,
- 17:49Orrin Hudson: I was helping this lady the other day, she was needing a bus ticket and I got it all taken care
- 17:54Orrin Hudson: of. She was happy, but she don't understand. I was more happy than her because I'm adding value
- 18:00Orrin Hudson: to the world. Yeah. And you know, I, I love people. I want people to win. A lawyer called me not long
- 18:06Orrin Hudson: ago and said, man, I sent my Latino friend to you and you were the only one that would happen. I said,
- 18:11Orrin Hudson: your Latino friend is me.
- 18:14Orrin Hudson: And so everybody is me and I'm going to do everything in my God and the power to help
- 18:19Orrin Hudson: everybody I can.
- 18:21Raymond Aaron: And to prove it, they're making a movie about your life.
- 18:25Orrin Hudson: I'm making a movie on what I'm doing.
- 18:27Orrin Hudson: Tell me.
- 18:27Orrin Hudson: And I'm making a movie on what I'm doing.
- 18:30Orrin Hudson: And I've trained over a hundred thousand kids.
- 18:32Orrin Hudson: My goal is a million.
- 18:33Orrin Hudson: And I just love sharing wisdom.
- 18:36Orrin Hudson: I love sharing wisdom and showing people what works for me.
- 18:40Orrin Hudson: My credit score is 830.
- 18:42Orrin Hudson: Got a high credit score.
- 18:44Orrin Hudson: And I'm just, my goal is to help a million children.
- 18:47Orrin Hudson: So I got to do a lot of fundraising so I can get this work done.
- 18:51Orrin Hudson: Right now, I'm doing workshops every week to give back to the community, making the hood good.
- 18:58Orrin Hudson: Think thrice and save a life.
- 18:59Orrin Hudson: My message is brains, beats, bullets, 24-7, 365.
- 19:04Orrin Hudson: Think thrice and save a life.
- 19:07Raymond Aaron: Nice.
- 19:08Raymond Aaron: Sweet.
- 19:08Raymond Aaron: Tell me about the movie.
- 19:10Orrin Hudson: the movie is it's uh it's going to talk about you know me being 14 years old making the wrong moves
- 19:18Orrin Hudson: white teacher pulled me to the side taught me to think and uh think for myself because i was
- 19:23Orrin Hudson: following the follower some people say following the food and it's going to talk about my struggles
- 19:29Orrin Hudson: and how i was able to um overcome that become an air force veteran state trooper then start a youth
- 19:37Orrin Hudson: development program called Be Someone.
- 19:39Orrin Hudson: Coach kids to win three Atlanta
