- 0:00Chapter 45 from the book of Jeremiah.
- 0:04Dear Lord, please be with us and let the Holy Spirit give us
- 0:06wisdom and insight as we read through the scripture.
- 0:09We ask this in Jesus name. It's entitled A message to Baruk
- 0:16when Baruk son of Niraya wrote on the scroll the words Jeremiah
- 0:21the prophet dictated in the fourth year of Jehoah Kim son of
- 0:26Josiah king of Judah. Jeremiah said this to Baruch.
- 0:30This is what the Lord, the God of Israel says to you.
- 0:33Baruch, you said woe to me. The Lord had has added sorrow to
- 0:40my pain. I am worn out with groaning and
- 0:44find no rest. But the Lord has told me to say
- 0:47to you, This is what the Lord says.
- 0:50I will overthrow what I have built and uproot what I have
- 0:56planted throughout the earth. Should you then seek great
- 1:00things for yourself, do not seek them, for I will bring disaster
- 1:05on all people, declares the Lord.
- 1:07But wherever you go, I will let you escape with your life.
- 1:12So that's the end. It's just a very short chapter
- 1:15there, so I will read the commentary for this chapter.
- 1:19Why are some of these chapters out of out of sequence?
- 1:21At times the stories in Jeremiah appear to be strung together in
- 1:24random order. Something a later editor prob
- 1:27possibly rearranged the chapters for various reasons.
- 1:31Others think the book was arranged thematically, not
- 1:34chronologically, so that some sections that appear to be out
- 1:38of place were placed there intentionally to support a
- 1:41certain theme. What was Baruch complaining
- 1:46about? Undoubtedly, Baruch shared in
- 1:49Jeremiah's sorrows. Baruch may have experienced
- 1:53emotions similar to those of Jeremiah, such as rejection or
- 1:56disappointment because the people would not repent.
- 1:59Or perhaps Baruch had misgivings about his humble lot in life.
- 2:05And there's another note about this.
- 2:07So what great things did Baruch want for himself?
- 2:10Baruch wishes are not revealed. He may have been longing for a
- 2:15quiet life in which he could escape the responsibilities of
- 2:19being Jeremiah helper. Some think that so Sarah Aya,
- 2:24Baruch's brother, enjoyed great things as a staff officer under
- 2:29King Zedekiah. It may have been that Baruch
- 2:32envied his brother's position now Chapter 46, a message about
- 2:39Egypt. This is the word of law of the
- 2:42Lord that came to Jeremiah the prophet concerning the nation's
- 2:47There's many nations concerning Egypt.
- 2:50This is the message against the army of Pharaoh Nikko, king of
- 2:54Egypt, which was defeated at Karchimash on the Euphrates
- 3:00River by Nebuchadnezzar, king of Babylon, in the fourth year of
- 3:04Jehoiakim, son of Josiah, king of Judah.
- 3:08Prepare your Shields, both large and small, and March out for
- 3:12battle. Harness the horses, mount the
- 3:15steeds, take your positions with helmets on, Polish your Spears,
- 3:19put on your armor. What do I see?
- 3:21They are terrified, they are retreating.
- 3:24Their warriors are defeated, they flee in haste, without
- 3:27looking back, and there is terror on every side, declares
- 3:31the Lord. The swift cannot flee, nor the
- 3:34strong escape in the north by the river Euphrates.
- 3:39They stumble and fall. Who is this that rises like the
- 3:45Nile like rivers of surging waters?
- 3:49Egypt rises like the Nile like rivers of surging waters?
- 3:55She says, I will rise and cover the earth.
- 3:59I will destroy cities and their people.
- 4:03So I'm going to pause here for a minute because this is
- 4:06interesting because is this a spirituality that's coming out
- 4:12of Egypt? As you know, there are
- 4:16principalities that cover different areas.
- 4:18That was a belief that they had a long time ago.
- 4:21And it it's supported by Ephesians 6, chapter 12, chapter
- 4:276, verse 12. And so is this, Like she says, I
- 4:33will rise and cover the earth. So I'm just wondering if this is
- 4:39something that is supernatural and evil.
- 4:44Charge you horses, Dr. Furiously, you charioteers March
- 4:48on you warriors, men of Cush and Put who carry Shields, men of
- 4:54Lydia who draw the bow. But that day belongs to the
- 4:58Lord, the Lord Almighty. A day of vengeance for vengeance
- 5:02on his foes. The sword will devour till it is
- 5:06satisfied, till it has quenched its thirst with blood for the
- 5:11Lord. The Lord Almighty will offer
- 5:13sacrifice in the land of the north by the river Euphrates.
- 5:19Get up Gilead and get balm, virgin daughter Egypt.
- 5:24But you try many medicines in vain.
- 5:27There is no healing for you. The nations will hear of your
- 5:32shame. Your cries will fill the earth.
- 5:351 warrior will stumble over another.
- 5:38Both will fall down together. So I'm going to pause there and
- 5:45go through some of the questions and answers for this portion of
- 5:47chapter 46. So what nations were these?
- 5:51The Gentile or non Israelite nations?
- 5:54God commissioned Jeremiah to speak not only to Judah, but to
- 5:59non Jewish people as well. Was this a prophecy before the
- 6:03event or a political analysis after the fact?
- 6:07Opinions are divided on this matter.
- 6:09Egypt was defeated in six O 5 BC.
- 6:13If these words came after Egypt's defeat, they may have
- 6:18been a song expressing Judah's relief.
- 6:21On the other hand, if these words were given before the
- 6:24event, they would have announced Egypt's defeat as God's judgment
- 6:28for the idolatry and past treatment of Israel and Judah.
- 6:33Can vengeance be a godly attribute?
- 6:36Only God can rightfully avenge wrong.
- 6:40His vengeance is equivalent to justice.
- 6:43His wrath against sin is always appropriate.
- 6:47Human vengeance, on the other hand, is almost always distorted
- 6:51by sinful human nature. God desires to balance the
- 6:54scales of justice. People want to get even.
- 6:58God wants to protect the truth. People want to protect
- 7:02themselves. To desire revenge is human, but
- 7:07it is not godly. It is not a godly attribute.
- 7:11Retaliation should be left to God.
- 7:14And you can find that it says the vengeance is mine.
- 7:18And the verse that's quoted in here is Romans 1217 through 21.
- 7:24So what is the difference between Lord and Lord Almighty?
- 7:28These are two titles for God that come from the same Hebrew
- 7:32phrase, Adonai Yahweh, which means the God who is master of
- 7:38all things. Why would God offer a sacrifice?
- 7:43So that the price of sin would be paid and Judah would be
- 7:47judged for its sin? Jeremiah used human terms in the
- 7:52only way he knew how to describe what God was doing.
- 7:56God's vengeance would be like a sacrifice satisfying His holy
- 8:00wrath. Who was virgin?
- 8:03Egypt. This is a personification of the
- 8:05nation of Egypt. Some think it was used
- 8:08sarcastically. That is, the word virgin
- 8:11referred to Egypt being conquered by other nations.
- 8:14Yet Egypt would soon lose its virginity, for Egypt would be
- 8:19conquered by King Nebuchadnezzar and be put to shame.
- 8:26The only thing that is confusing, not the only thing,
- 8:28but what is confusing to me in chapter 46 is that it's saying
- 8:33that she says I will rise and cover the earth.
- 8:36It's like Egypt personified. Is that some spiritual aspect?
- 8:42I really just don't know. But then it says, but there's
- 8:44going to be defeat, obviously, because the Lord, but that day
- 8:48belongs to the Lord, the Lord Almighty.
- 8:51That's in verse 10 and a day of vengeance.
- 8:54Vengeance on his foes. Well, God does have wrath at
- 8:59times for injustice. But I also wonder, could this be
- 9:04one of those foreshadowing type prophecies where it had a
- 9:08partial fulfillment, but it ultimately is also pointing to
- 9:15the last days just because the day of vengeance is usually like
- 9:20the Lord's day. That's what it's usually
- 9:22referring to. And so that's the only reason
- 9:25why I think of that when I read that.
- 9:28So going to verse 13, this is the message the Lord spoke to
- 9:33Jeremiah the prophet about the coming of Nebuchadnezzar, king
- 9:36of Babylon to attack Egypt. Announce this in Egypt and
- 9:41proclaim it in Migdal. Proclaim it also in Memphis and
- 9:45Tampanas. Take your positions and get
- 9:47ready for the sword devours those around you.
- 9:50Why will your warriors be laid low?
- 9:52They cannot stand for the Lord will push them down.
- 9:55They will stumble repeatedly. They will fall over each other.
- 9:58They will say get up, let us go back to our own people in our
- 10:01native lands away from the sword of the oppressor There they will
- 10:04exclaim Pharaoh king of Egypt is only a loud noise.
- 10:08He has missed his opportunity as surely as I live, declares the
- 10:12King, whose name is the Lord Almighty.
- 10:16One will come who is like Tabor among the mountains, like Carmel
- 10:21by the sea. Pick your belongings or exile
- 10:25you who live in Egypt, for Memphis will be laid waste and
- 10:29lie in ruins without inhabitant. Egypt is a beautiful heifer, but
- 10:35a gadfly is coming against her from the north.
- 10:38The mercenaries in her ranks are like fattened calves.
- 10:42They too will turn and fight together.
- 10:44They will not stand their ground, for the day of disaster
- 10:48is coming upon them. The time for them to be
- 10:50punished. Egypt will hiss like a fleeing
- 10:54serpent as the enemy advances in force.
- 10:58So this doesn't really give Egypt a very good
- 11:02personification to hiss like a fleeing serpent.
- 11:06So that's very evil. That's Egypt is being compared
- 11:12to something very evil. They will come against her with
- 11:16axes, like men who cut down trees.
- 11:18They will chop down her fork. Forest declares the Lord, dense
- 11:23though it be. They are more numerous than
- 11:27locust. They cannot be counted.
- 11:30Daughter Egypt to be put. Daughter Egypt will be put to
- 11:34shame, given into the hands of the people of the north.
- 11:40The Lord Almighty, the God of Israel, says, I am about to
- 11:45bring punishment on Ammon, God of Thebes, on Pharaoh, on Egypt
- 11:51and her gods and her kings, and on those who rely on Pharaoh.
- 11:57I will give them into the hands of those who want to kill them.
- 12:01Nebuchadnezzar, king of Babylon and his officers.
- 12:06I again I well I'll read what this chapter says.
- 12:11So what was Jeremiah supposed to announce in Egypt?
- 12:15Nebuchadnezzar coming destruction of Egypt.
- 12:18The devastation of Egypt occurred in 568 BC after
- 12:24Jeremiah death. What made the one coming like
- 12:27Tabor and like Carmel? Tabor and Carmel are two
- 12:31prominent mountains in Israel. Neither is particularly tall,
- 12:36but they stand out from the surrounding terrain.
- 12:38Tabor is an isolated mountain rising above a plain, and Carmel
- 12:43is a prominent mountain range along the coast.
- 12:47The coming king Nebuchadnezzar would similarly be distinguished
- 12:51from the rest of the kings. What was a gadfly?
- 12:56This is This is the only use of this word in the Old Testament,
- 13:00so identification must come from the context.
- 13:04The word comes from a Hebrew root meaning to nip.
- 13:08To be consistent with this analogy, the gadfly was probably
- 13:12a small biting insect, so a bite was painful, but probably more
- 13:17of an annoyance than anything else.
- 13:21Why would God want to punish false gods?
- 13:24To show that these gods were in fact not gods at all.
- 13:28God punished the city's supposed supposedly being protected by
- 13:35then. God's judgement demonstrated his
- 13:38complete sovereignty and power over all as he is the one true
- 13:43God. So I when I see this that
- 13:48Jeremiah is saying it, then I do wonder.
- 13:51Obviously the people believed in Ammon or Amon, God of Thebes and
- 14:00there were Egypt with her gods. So there were multiple gods that
- 14:03they with a little G God, not like God, the one true God.
- 14:11There's these others, but what were they?
- 14:14Were they just figments of imagination or were they actual
- 14:18spiritual entities that wanted to be gods that really truly
- 14:22were not gods? The scripture doesn't tell us
- 14:24that. But I do wonder when God tells
- 14:27Jeremiah that he's going to punish these and he names like
- 14:31Amon, God of Thebes, that, you know, if there wasn't an entity,
- 14:37would God actually say that? Would he actually call it out by
- 14:40name? It's just something that I think
- 14:43about like some of these things when we read them in the Bible,
- 14:46I think we should think about it just, you know, like we might
- 14:50Passover these things and just think, well, none of that
- 14:52exists. And when in reality, there are
- 14:56things that I believe that we just don't really understand, we
- 15:01don't know that do exist, and that when we read Scripture
- 15:06carefully, then we see things like this.
- 15:09So continuing on, it's well, he's talking about
- 15:13Nebuchadnezzar, king of Babylon, and his officers.
- 15:16Later, however, Egypt will be inhabited as in times past,
- 15:20declares the Lord. Do not be afraid, Jacob, my
- 15:23servant, Do not be dismayed. Israel.
- 15:26I will surely save you out of a distant place, your descendants
- 15:30from the land of their exile. Jacob will again have peace and
- 15:35security, and no one will make him afraid.
- 15:39So now that verse right there, I think his future.
- 15:42Because Israel has never had peace and security, and they've
- 15:48always been the subject of violence.
- 15:52And so it says, Jacob will again have peace and security and no
- 15:57one will make him afraid. Well, that's certainly not
- 16:00today. Do not be afraid.
- 16:03And Jacob is referring to Israel.
- 16:06Do not be afraid, Jacob, my servant, for I am with you,
- 16:10declares the Lord. Though I completely destroy all
- 16:14the nations among which I scatter you, I will not
- 16:18completely destroy you. I will discipline you, but only
- 16:22in due measure. I will not let you go entirely
- 16:26unpunished. Now this shows again how God is
- 16:30just he. He's not.
- 16:33He's first of all, He honors His covenant that He made with
- 16:37Abraham, His promise to the people of Israel, and He always
- 16:42keeps a remnant. That's one thing.
- 16:45He's faithful to them even when they are not faithful to Him.
- 16:50And he says, I, I'm not going to completely destroy you, but I
- 16:55will discipline you. And it says in Scripture
- 16:58elsewhere that God disciplines those he loves.
- 17:02And the purpose of discipline is so that they come back to
- 17:05repentance. So let's see, there's one more
- 17:10paragraph about X, you know, in the Bible study notes.
- 17:14So what is discipline in due measure?
- 17:17The idea of discipline in due measure can sound can be found
- 17:23throughout Scripture. God's discipline of His people
- 17:26brings about restoration, character, and godliness.
- 17:34God's discipline of unbelievers results in destruction,
- 17:38banishment, and suffering for God's people.
- 17:42Mercy ultimately triumphs over judgement because God's justice
- 17:48has been satisfied through the one time sacrifice of Jesus
- 17:51Christ, the Son of God. Then we'll continue in chapter
- 17:5647, a message about the Philistines.
- 18:00Now the Philistines are the area today where is Gaza.
- 18:05So this is always interesting when that comes up, just to see
- 18:08what it said in the past about this area.
- 18:12This is what the word of the Lord that came to Jeremiah the
- 18:16prophet concerning the Philistines before Pharaoh
- 18:20attacked Gaza. So this is interesting too,
- 18:23because it says before Pharaoh attacked Gaza, so Egypt attacked
- 18:30Gaza, and this just seems to come out of nowhere, but maybe
- 18:36it will explain it further. And this is what the Lord says.
- 18:40See how the waters are rising in the north.
- 18:44They will become an overflowing torrent.
- 18:47They will overflow the land and everything in it, the towns and
- 18:51those who live in them, the people will cry out.
- 18:55All who dwell in the land will wail at the sound of hooves of
- 18:59galloping steeds, at the noise of enemy Chariots and the rumble
- 19:04of their wheels. So right there we can see that
- 19:07this, the waters that are rising in the north are actually
- 19:10people. It's not waters because then
- 19:13they start describing about the hooves of galloping steeds and
- 19:17the enemy chariot. So this is a, a descriptive way
- 19:24of talking about the people that are coming from the north
- 19:27against them. Parents will not turn to help
- 19:30their children. Their hands will hang limp, for
- 19:34the day has come to destroy all the Philistines and to remove
- 19:41all survivors. Who could help?
- 19:44Who could help Tyre and Sidon in Lebanon?
- 19:48The Lord is about to destroy the Philistines.
- 19:52The remnant from the coast of Kaftor.
- 19:56Gazza will shave her head in mourning.
- 19:59Ashclon will be silenced. You remnant on the plain, how
- 20:05long will you cut yourselves at last?
- 20:08Word. Alas, Sword of the Lord, how
- 20:12long till you rest? Return to your sheath, cease and
- 20:17be still. But how can it rest when the
- 20:20Lord has commanded it, when He has ordered it to attack
- 20:25Ashkelon and the coast where all the Philistines destroyed?
- 20:31Commentary. Apparently the the last biblical
- 20:36reference to a Philistine city is found in Nehemiah, years
- 20:41after Jeremiah's time. Most scholars believe the
- 20:45Philistine cities were captured and their people deported by the
- 20:50Babylonian king Nebuchadnezzar. At that point, it seems they
- 20:55ceased to exist as a nation. Though the word Palestine is
- 21:01linked to the word Philistine in the Hebrew, Palestinians today
- 21:07are not related to the Philistines, They merely live on
- 21:11the same land. Why would they cut themselves?
- 21:17While we dress in black in our culture to express sorrow,
- 21:22people in the ancient Near East express sorrow in other ways.
- 21:26Cutting oneself, an expression of grief among the pagans, was
- 21:33forbidden by the law. Other ancient mourning customs
- 21:40included going barefoot here, tearing one's clothes, shaving
- 21:46the head, putting ashes on the head, covering the head,
- 21:49throwing dust in the air, and wailing loudly.
- 21:53And there's a bunch of references throughout scripture
- 21:55about that. And then we are at Chapter 48,
- 22:06and this is a message about Moab, which is a portion of
- 22:11Jordan today, the land area concerning Moab.
- 22:15This is what the Lord Almighty, the God of Israel says.
- 22:18Woe to Nebo, for it will be ruined.
- 22:21Kiriatham will be disgraced and captured.
- 22:23The stronghold will be disgraced and shattered.
- 22:26Moab will be praised no more. In Hesh Brown, people will plot
- 22:31her downfall. Come, let's put an end to that
- 22:33nation. You, the people of Mad Men will
- 22:36also be silenced. The sword will pursue you.
- 22:39Cries of anguish arise from Hiranium cities of great havoc
- 22:44and destruction. Moab will be broken.
- 22:47The little ones will cry out. They will go up to the hill of
- 22:50Lahuth, weeping bitterly as they go.
- 22:53On the road down to Hiranayam, anguish cries over the
- 22:57destruction are heard. Flee, run, for your lives become
- 23:01like the Bush in the desert. Since you trust in your deeds
- 23:05and riches, you too will be taken captive.
- 23:09So this is another clue about God.
- 23:13And what he doesn't like is since you trust in your deeds
- 23:18and riches, you too will be taken captive, and Kimosh will
- 23:25go into exile together with his priest and officials.
- 23:30The destroyer will come against every town, and not a town will
- 23:35escape. The valley will be ruined and
- 23:37the plateau destroyed because the Lord has spoken.
- 23:41Put salt on Moab, for she will be laid waste.
- 23:44Her towns will become desolate with no one to live in them.
- 23:48A curse on anyone who is LAX in doing the Lord's work.
- 23:52Again, here's another thing that we find out about God.
- 23:56A curse on anyone who is LAX in doing the Lord's work.
- 24:02Just something that stood out. A curse on anyone who keeps
- 24:06their sword from bloodshed. Moab has been at rest from
- 24:10youth, like wine left on its dreads, not poured from one jar
- 24:14to another. She has not gone into exile.
- 24:17So she tastes as she did, and her aroma is unchanged.
- 24:22But days are coming, declares the Lord.
- 24:25When I will send men who pour from pitchers and they will pour
- 24:29her out. They will empty her pitchers and
- 24:34smash her jars. Then Moab will be ashamed of
- 24:37Kimosh. I believe Kimosh was a God and
- 24:41Israel was ashamed, as Israel was ashamed when they trusted in
- 24:46Bethel. How can you say we are warriors,
- 24:50men valiant in battle? Moab will be destroyed in her
- 24:53towns, invaded her finest. Young men will go down in the
- 24:57slaughter, declares the king, whose name is the Lord Almighty.
- 25:00The fall of Moab is at hand. Her calamity will come quickly.
- 25:06Mourn for her, all who live around her, all who know her
- 25:11fame. Say how broken is the mighty
- 25:14scepter, how broken the glorious staff.
- 25:18Come down from your glory and sit on the parched ground, you
- 25:22inhabitants of Daughter Dibin. For the one who destroys Moab
- 25:27will come up against you and ruin your fortified cities.
- 25:32Stand by the road and watch you who live in Aurora, and ask the
- 25:37man fleeing and the woman escaping.
- 25:39Ask them what has happened. Moab is disgraced, for she is
- 25:43shattered. Wail and cry out.
- 25:46Announced by the Arnon that Moab is destroyed.
- 25:52Judgement has come to the plateau, to Halon, Jehaz and
- 25:56Mifatha, to Diban, Nebo and Beth Dibliathum, to Kiriathiyum, Beth
- 26:05Gemul and Bethmion, to Kiriath and Basra, to all the towns of
- 26:10Moab far and near. Moab's horn is cut off, her arm
- 26:16is broken. So a horn is usually strength or
- 26:20power and it's cut off and her arm is broken.
- 26:25Declares the Lord. Make her drunk, for she has
- 26:29defiled the Lord. So that's giving a reason.
- 26:33The whole reason that Moab is getting destroyed is because she
- 26:36has defied the Lord. She has defied the Lord.
- 26:40Let Moab wallow in her vomit. Let her be an object of
- 26:44ridicule. Was not Israel the object of
- 26:47your ridicule? Ridicule was she caught among
- 26:51thieves that you shake your head and scorn whenever you speak of
- 26:55her abandoned your towns and dwell among the rocks.
- 26:59You who live in Moab. So this there's a few questions
- 27:04and answers on this chapter. So what was Mad Men it was
- 27:09talking about? It's a city.
- 27:10This was not a person, but an otherwise unknown town in Moab.
- 27:15The name could mean either be silenced or dung.
- 27:20Jeremiah may have been using word play to lamb blast Moab
- 27:25with a sort of poetic justice. Why become like a desert Bush?
- 27:29It's not clear what the expression means.
- 27:32The Hebrew word for Bush comes from a word meaning to be naked,
- 27:36suggesting a shrub with tiny scaly leaves and small cones.
- 27:40But the word may also refer to a Hebrew city named Aurora.
- 27:46And whatever the specific meaning, the general thrust is
- 27:50that those who had known the good life would be stripped of
- 27:53everything and reduced to bare substance.
- 27:57Why put salt on a nation? Some note that ancient
- 28:00conquerors literally spread salt over defeated cities to prevent
- 28:05crops from growing for years. Others think put salt could be
- 28:09translated give wings. If that is the case, then this
- 28:14would instruct Moab to wish for wings so it could fly to safety
- 28:20away from all the destruction. Still others think it could read
- 28:25set up a grave marker. Why would God call his work
- 28:30bloodshed? The Old Testament approach to
- 28:33getting rid of sin was to get rid of the Sinner, which often
- 28:38resulted in men, women, and children being slaughtered.
- 28:42Those who picked up the sword to slay the guilty were considered
- 28:46agents of the Lord's wrath and judgement.
- 28:49Those who were killed were not viewed as victims since it was
- 28:54their own sin and hardened hearts that had brought
- 28:58punishment on them. What was different about wine
- 29:03left on its drugs? It became quite bitter, A vivid
- 29:07analogy for Moab. The fermentation process left
- 29:11sediment or dregs at the bottom of the wine.
- 29:16The wine had to be carefully poured into the containers from
- 29:19the from time to time during fermentation in a way that would
- 29:24separate it from the sediment. This procedure, called
- 29:27decanting, kept the wine from becoming bitter.
- 29:32Why was Israel ashamed when they trusted in Bethel?
- 29:36Bethel was an important religious city of the breakaway
- 29:40northern Kingdom of Israel. It became a Center for Pagan
- 29:43worship. Israel's shame was probably an
- 29:45allusion to the fall of the Northern Kingdom in 722 BC, the
- 29:50final consequence of their continual fixation with false
- 29:55gods. From what glory were they
- 29:59supposed to come down? Diabon, an important city in
- 30:03Moab, was perched atop 2 hills in a prominent place in the
- 30:08central part of Moab. Its glory seems to be a
- 30:12reference to its prominence both geographically and politically.
- 30:17What kind of horn was cut off? Horn and arm were both symbols
- 30:22of strength and military power. The source of this symbolism for
- 30:27horn is probably connected to the power of the horns of a
- 30:32bull. As a result, the crowns of gods,
- 30:36the crowns of gods and kings of the ancient Near East, often
- 30:41included an abundance of horns to signify power and authority.
- 30:46So Moab's horn is a reference to Moab's power.
- 30:50The fact that the horn was cut off indicates the breaking of
- 30:54Moab's power. How could they have?
- 30:57How could they make Moab drunk? Drunkenness is a common
- 31:01prophetic theme. Earlier, Jeremiah had
- 31:04prophesized that the nations would be made drunk as they were
- 31:08forced to drink the wine of God's wrath.
- 31:11That is probably the case here as well.
- 31:13The verse is located in a series of prophecies against different
- 31:18nations. The picture is 1 of helplessness
- 31:21and confusion making Moab vulnerable and an object of
- 31:26ridicule. They would not escape the wrath
- 31:29of God and verse. Our chapter 48 continues, so
- 31:37I'll keep reading that. Be like a dove that makes its
- 31:41nest at the mouth of a cave. We have heard of Moed's pride.
- 31:47How great is her arrogance, of her insolence, her pride, her
- 31:51conceit, and the haughtiness of her heart.
- 31:55I know her insolence, but it is futile, declares the Lord, and
- 32:00her boast accomplished nothing. Therefore I wail over Moab for
- 32:05all Moab. I cry out.
- 32:07I moan for the people of care perish, Seth.
- 32:10I weep for you as Jazer weeps. Your vines of Sigma, your
- 32:15branches spread out as far as the sea.
- 32:17They reach as far as Jazer the destroyer has fallen on your
- 32:22what ripened fruit and grapes. Joy and gladness are gone from
- 32:27the orchards and fields of Moabs.
- 32:30I have stopped the flow of wine from the presses.
- 32:34No one treads them with shouts of joy.
- 32:36Although there are shouts, they are not shouts of joy.
- 32:41The sound of their cry rises from Heshban to Ilea, and Jehas
- 32:46from Zohar, as far as Horanium and Egleth sheblish Iya.
- 32:53For even the waters of Nimrim are dried up in Moab.
- 32:59I will put an end to those who make offerings on the high
- 33:04places and burn incense to their gods, declares the Lord.
- 33:09So my heart laments for Moab like the music of a pipe.
- 33:13It laments like a pipe for the people of Kir Hirosheth.
- 33:18The wealth they acquired is gone.
- 33:21Every head is shaved and every beard is cut off.
- 33:25Every hand is slashed and every waste is covered with sackcloth.
- 33:31On all the roofs in Moab and in the public squares, there is
- 33:34nothing but mourning. For I have broken Moab like a
- 33:39jar that no one wants, declares the Lord.
- 33:42How shattered she is, how they wail, how Moab turns her back in
- 33:47its shame. Moab has become an object of
- 33:50ridicule, an object of horror to all those around her.
- 33:55This is what the Lord says. Look, an eagle is swooping down,
- 34:00spreading its wings over Moab. Kiriath will be captured and the
- 34:05strongholds taken in that day, the hearts of Moab's warriors
- 34:10will be like the heart of a woman in labor.
- 34:15So again, here this is something interesting like who is the
- 34:19eagle? Is the eagle Babylon swooping
- 34:21down? And that's another study
- 34:24spreading its wings over Moab. And then it says in that day,
- 34:27the hearts of Moab's warriors will be like the hearts of a
- 34:31woman in labor. A lot of times the end times are
- 34:33called like the birth pain, the woman in labor.
- 34:37So these kind of statements, although they could refer to
- 34:41just being in pain. A lot of times in the Bible it
- 34:44talks about that towards the last days.
- 34:46It talks about a woman in labor. So does this have a devil
- 34:53prophecy fulfillment? I'm not really sure.
- 34:57Moab will be destroyed as a nation because she defied the
- 35:02Lord. So God's giving his reason again
- 35:04because she defied the Lord. Terror and pit and snare await
- 35:09you, you people of Moab. Whoever flees from the terror
- 35:13will fall into the pit. Whoever climbs out of the pit
- 35:17will be caught in a snare, for I will bring on Moab the year of
- 35:23her punishment. So I think that's interesting
- 35:27too, the year of her punishment. Maybe that just means the time
- 35:30of her punishment, or maybe it means like a future year that
- 35:33there is a time frame. There are other prophecies that
- 35:37talk about fleeing from terror and falling into a pit, climbing
- 35:41out of the pit but still being caught.
- 35:42Like there's no escape from this, so for I will bring on
- 35:47Moab the year of her punishment, declares the Lord.
- 35:51In the shadows of Heshban the fugitives stand helpless.
- 35:54For a fire has gone out from Heshban, a blaze from the midst
- 35:59of Sihan. It burns the foreheads of Moab,
- 36:04the skulls of the noisy boasters.
- 36:06Woe to you, Moab. The people of Kemesh are
- 36:11destroyed. Your sons are taken into exile
- 36:14and your daughters into captivity.
- 36:17Yet I will restore the fortunes of Moab in the days to come,
- 36:22declares the Lord. Here ends the judgement on Moab.
- 36:27So again, God seems to promise a future for many people who are
- 36:33being destroyed. But he says I will restore the
- 36:36fortunes of Moab in the days to come.
- 36:39I, you know, if he's completely destroying and then Kemah is
- 36:42some sort of a God that they were worshipping, I believe.
- 36:48And so does this mean like the future, this, this is what's
- 36:54going to happen? There's a few more chapters
- 36:58about various nations and I think we're going to pick that
- 37:01up because this is already getting along.
- 37:02But we're almost finished with the Book of Jeremiah.
- 37:05So just a few more to go. Probably.
- 37:08I will read the last few questions and answers for
- 37:11chapter 48. Why play the Blues on a pipe?
- 37:16The pipe was an instrument used as funerals while people were
- 37:20mourning. So the prophet could could
- 37:22simply be referring to an internal cry of lament.
- 37:25It may also have been considered the best interest instrument to
- 37:29accompany the weighting of a lament.
- 37:33However, the simile, like a pipe, probably refers to the
- 37:37high pitched wailing of the one who is lint lamenting Moab.
- 37:43Why did shaving, cutting and dressing and sackcloth have to?
- 37:47What did shaving, cutting, dressing in sackcloth have to do
- 37:52with sorrow? While we dress in black in our
- 37:54culture to express sorrow, people in Ancient Near East
- 37:58express sorrow in other ways. Since a beard beard signified a
- 38:03man's maturity and dignity, to shave the beard or the head was
- 38:07to suggest humility and great loss.
- 38:11To tear one's clothing, which was handmade and more valuable
- 38:15in their culture than ours, demonstrated the depth of a
- 38:19tragedy greater than mere clothing.
- 38:22Clothing garments represented personalities.
- 38:26To tear them indicated A grievous inner hurt.
- 38:29Cutting oneself was an expression of grief among
- 38:33pagans, although it was forbidden by the law in
- 38:37Leviticus. Other ancient morning customs
- 38:40including going barefoot, putting ashes on the head,
- 38:43covering the head, throwing dust in the air, and wailing loudly.
- 38:49And that concludes chapter up to chapter 48 this time.
- 38:55We'll pick up 49 the next time.
