Latest / Hurdle with Emily Abbate / 5-MINUTE FRIDAY: Without Rain, There'd Be No Rainbows
Transcript
- 0:18Speaker 1: Hey, everybody. Emilyavadi here you are listening to another installment
- 0:22Speaker 1: of Five Minutes Friday. I'm so happy to be here
- 0:27Speaker 1: with you. I am sitting in my Los Angeles hotel room,
- 0:31Speaker 1: and I've been thinking a lot about light and dark,
- 0:35Speaker 1: rain versus sun. You know, when I got to Los Angeles,
- 0:38Speaker 1: the weather here was arguably worse than the weather when
- 0:41Speaker 1: I left New York City. Downpour, like absolute downpour, And
- 0:47Speaker 1: unlike New York, Los Angeles doesn't have the infrastructure to
- 0:50Speaker 1: navigate all different sorts of weather, so the streets were soaked.
- 0:54Speaker 1: I was soaked. It was a whole thing. But looking
- 0:58Speaker 1: on my window now and looking at the sun, I'm
- 1:01Speaker 1: reminded of the quote that's in this week's installment of
- 1:04Speaker 1: The Weekly Hurdle. If you don't yet subscribed, the link
- 1:06Speaker 1: to do so is in the show notes. But the
- 1:09Speaker 1: quote is without rain, there would be no rainbows. It
- 1:13Speaker 1: brings me to a conversation I had with Menos Dias
- 1:16Speaker 1: yesterday over lunch. She's the co founder of Open. He's
- 1:19Speaker 1: been on the show a couple of times before. It
- 1:21Speaker 1: was so great to sit down with him in person,
- 1:24Speaker 1: and we were talking about the bright stuff and how
- 1:28Speaker 1: it's so easy to share the good moments with everyone,
- 1:34Speaker 1: but it's those dark times, that tough stuff, the hurdles
- 1:38Speaker 1: that we go through, that's the stuff that really shapes us.
- 1:42Speaker 1: That's the stuff that makes us appreciate the sunshine, appreciate
- 1:48Speaker 1: the good And so my reflection this week, when just
- 1:54Speaker 1: yesterday I was complaining about the gloomy weather, is that
- 2:00Speaker 1: we have such an opportunity to learn in those yucky moments.
- 2:05Speaker 1: And if we can reframe, do the best that we
- 2:08Speaker 1: can anyway, to look for the positives in the negatives,
- 2:12Speaker 1: to recognize that you can be happy while navigating hard stuff.
- 2:17Speaker 1: There can be joy even during bad times, even during
- 2:22Speaker 1: rough times, then that keeps you grounded and also really
- 2:26Speaker 1: helps you appreciate the good stuff. My question for you
- 2:30Speaker 1: this week, how are the hurdles in your life right
- 2:34Speaker 1: now helping to shape your current perspective? How are the
- 2:39Speaker 1: hurdles in your life right now helping to shape your
- 2:43Speaker 1: current perspective? And now a listener question.
- 2:49Speaker 2: Hi, Emily's Katie listening to Hurdle as I start my
- 2:52Speaker 2: spring cleaning and noticing all my old notebooks and running journals,
- 2:56Speaker 2: and I'm just wondering if they are trash or treasure.
- 3:01Speaker 2: Do you often look back on the journaling that you've done,
- 3:06Speaker 2: or do you journal in order to help yourself move forward? Thanks?
- 3:10Speaker 1: Oh, this is a good one. So I do have
- 3:13Speaker 1: like a shelf in my office that I stash all
- 3:17Speaker 1: of my journals, my old journals. Anyway, I keep my
- 3:20Speaker 1: current journal next to my bed, and I would say
- 3:24Speaker 1: that I keep them and I reflect on them because
- 3:27Speaker 1: I like to know where I've been. You know, I
- 3:31Speaker 1: struggle a lot with the frustration over not having a
- 3:34Speaker 1: really good memory of a lot of things. And a
- 3:39Speaker 1: big reason why I got into journaling was that I
- 3:42Speaker 1: wanted the opportunity to think back and remember where I've been,
- 3:46Speaker 1: where my mindset was, the things that I was doing.
- 3:49Speaker 1: And so while I won't necessarily like dwell in the past,
- 3:54Speaker 1: I'm not reading through these journals, you know, once a month,
- 3:58Speaker 1: I do like the opportunity to look at them. I
- 4:00Speaker 1: think in five, ten, fifteen years, I'm going to be
- 4:03Speaker 1: grateful that these moments, these times, these thoughts, these memories,
- 4:07Speaker 1: this is part of my life is written down on paper.
- 4:10Speaker 1: And who knows, maybe there are a few book ideas
- 4:13Speaker 1: in there too. Oh man, what a week good luck,
- 4:18Speaker 1: best wishes, excitement moment for all of the hurdlers that
- 4:21Speaker 1: are running the La Marathon this weekend. With Team Hurdle,
