- 0:00Hi and welcome to the Curve Weekly. The podcast that keeps you up to date with all the money,
- 0:06business and stock market tea. Everyone should experience for us at least once in their lives
- 0:10and Annie shouldn't miss out just because she can't afford it. Help me. Another day,
- 0:16another studio studio and quotation marks. We are like secretly using an office in our
- 0:23clothing space. Quickly sit up, go for it. And I bet you someone's going to come in halfway through.
- 0:28Or like, you know, when you're just annoying five minutes to the end, excuse me,
- 0:33but this is startup life, you know, saving money here and there.
- 0:37It was just saying, like, gosh, if people could see what I was doing this, I think you should,
- 0:41you should. It was just, you know, when you have those moments, like, so we have such ambitions
- 0:46for the Curve and we saw many aspirations and it's so exciting. But there's moments where you go,
- 0:52gosh, I'm going to look back on this and probably laugh at the situation of, you know,
- 0:57when you're cutting out manually, cutting out name tags or like this morning, I was literally,
- 1:02just manually, you know, when you get to a size and you're like, oh, gosh, it's more the things
- 1:08you do as a co-founder because you need to do everything. Your job description ranges from
- 1:16cutting name tags to all the way up to making strategic decisions. It's like crazy. And yeah,
- 1:22this morning, I was just like, I just moved into a new place and I was head by pants. I was naked.
- 1:27And my pants on the ground, busy steaming my pants while I was trying to run out the door
- 1:32to get to another meeting, which I was probably going to be late for. It was just, and I was like,
- 1:37I just had to smile and go, oh my god, I'm probably going to look back on this and be like,
- 1:42we've been at time and you're like having to go, yeah.
- 1:44Well, we've received a lovely feedback email, didn't we? About our chit chat.
- 1:52So we got a lovely, we get lovely messages all the time and we absolutely love getting
- 1:56all of them from you. So thank you so much. And there's there's always the old funny one,
- 2:00all the one that, you know, makes us laugh. And this one, I forwarded to Sophie and I say,
- 2:04the law. Honestly, this message maybe laughs so much. Okay. It wasn't like, hi, how are you?
- 2:10Anything? It was just some feedback, maybe, comma. Why is the beginnings of your episodes
- 2:16drag on? That's not the right word, but it takes a while before the finance chat kicks in.
- 2:21And the endings are always rush, like, gotta go by or have somewhere else to be rush, rush.
- 2:28Don't take this as an offense, but just something I've noticed. And I thought,
- 2:31do you know what? Fair. If you just tune into this podcast and it says in the title,
- 2:37finance and investing education and then you get it and it's me being like,
- 2:42I got my most archwaxed in the weekend. You've been like, I'm very confused.
- 2:47I mean, I appreciate it. Yeah.
- 2:51But also, I do want to tell a funny story. There's nothing to do with finance.
- 2:54Well, we've got to leave time for the finance continuum. You know, before I was like,
- 2:57ah, ha, ha, the reason that that came to mind is because, you know, Emma, so we interviewed
- 3:03this awesome girl that we've made friends with in the co-working space, Emma Louise Boynton,
- 3:08who actually we're going to get on the podcast with interviewed her. We're just editing it.
- 3:12Anyway, it's all about sex and money because she has a platform called sex talks.
- 3:17So at the co-working space that we work in, there's like a separate kind of gym
- 3:21sauna area. And I bumped into her in the changing rooms. And she was like, do you know what?
- 3:26The other day someone was doing my makeup for sex talks. And she was like, do you have tweezers?
- 3:30I've urgently got to get rid of your moustache. And I thought, I don't think it's all good to point
- 3:36out stuff that people need to change about their face. You know, if you go into the laser on
- 3:40your legs and they're like, have you thought about lip filler? It's like, no, no, thank you.
- 3:45No, no, it's not your job to point out what I need to spend more money on to change about my-
- 3:49But isn't that the job top, so? I don't think it's appropriate. I don't know if anyone works
- 3:54in the beauty space. Can you tell us, is this something you get told to do? I have a hair
- 4:00that comes out of a mole. The same. And I feel like an old woman. I get, sometimes I forget
- 4:05about it. And I'll just catch my eye. I actually found one on my cheek the other day.
- 4:12It was just a random black hair. And I thought, God, Lord, how long has that been there?
- 4:17No one's told me. We're so vain. I mean, it's fine. But like, a cheek hair is kind of could go.
- 4:24Yeah. Just a singular big long black one. Hey, before we get corrected into the finance chair,
- 4:30which we should hurry up. We should obviously hurry up because someone's under within. We're not
- 4:34going to out her, but she'll be like, hurry up. So, last week, even right into the fancy, what?
- 4:46Don't even know if that's her name. I just thought that was kind of good. It isn't off.
- 4:51It's like, oh, sorry Nancy. Not just jokes, it's not Nancy. We just made it up.
- 4:55That's not Nancy, it was so close. Anyway, so last week we put a podcast episode out that you
- 5:00weren't on, which by the way felt quite strange to me. I honestly felt like I felt left out.
- 5:05I felt I was like, she doesn't need me. She's grown up. You know, I left the nest.
- 5:12We finally don't enjoy talking to myself in a room. Yeah. It's not fun. It's way more fun
- 5:17doing with you. But we just, the reason we did it is because it's been, you know, like even to
- 5:22fix like naked steaming pants on the ground comment, like it's been that that would be the
- 5:27epitome of what our life has been the last, probably month really. And we thought, you know what,
- 5:32we don't have time for the podcast this week. We're going to have to say why. So, you know,
- 5:35if anyone that missed it, we're in the middle of just, we've just decided we want to raise capital.
- 5:39We want to grow the curve way faster than what we can. Yeah. So we just need external funding too.
- 5:44We've got so many ideas that we want to push play on and we need money to do that. And so we want
- 5:50this to be an amazing platform catering to all different types of women at different stages
- 5:55of investing. And to do that, we need some extra help because it is only so for me. Well,
- 5:59and Emily, our podcast is amazing. I am. I love you. But yeah, we do need help and money,
- 6:07like we say is time. And so with more money, it could buy us more time to look at big picture
- 6:12things and make some really exciting decisions. But we've had some really cool people get in touch
- 6:18after listening to that. And I kind of didn't expect it. I wasn't saying that with the intention
- 6:23of really getting the ice was jokingly at the end. I don't know if you listened by the way,
- 6:26but I was like, if anyone's got a hundred percent, no, you don't. I did listen to that one.
- 6:30Okay. Yeah. Anyway, we had some really epic people get in touch. And also just amazing
- 6:36messages of support and being like, hey, you should chat to this person or like this person
- 6:40would be a great person for you to speak to for this reason. Like anyway, I just want to say thank
- 6:44you for all the amazing messages of support. And so if you can hear a siren, we're in the middle of
- 6:48London. Anyway, now we can move on. Finance chat. Finance chat. So it's Easter. So I thought I'd
- 7:00do a little Easter special. Oh, yeah. So why don't you bring chocolate as the traits?
- 7:07We've just been talking about how hectic our week is being. It's the little things,
- 7:10babe. I know. It's also the big thing. It's all the things in between.
- 7:15Sorry. Yeah, when someone's like, you're like, no, not really.
- 7:20Sorry, I take it. No, no, no. So it's Easter. And there has been a bit of, I guess,
- 7:26commotion because the price of cocoa is skyrocketing, like going up and up and up and up and up.
- 7:33And it has increased. It's doubled already this year. So we're only three months in this year.
- 7:41And the price of cocoa, which is the main ingredient in Easter bunnies and Easter eggs.
- 7:45I got it. Thank you for that. Yeah. Yeah, the obvious is just going like it's almost could be one
- 7:51of the best investments people are saying this year would be to it would be if you'd invested in
- 7:55the commodity cocoa. So it's cocoa a commodity because it's an ingredient or it's from the earth
- 8:00or it's a yeah, yeah. So commodities are kind of rare. They could be it's gold, it's aluminium,
- 8:06it's cocoa, it's coffee, all those things. Yeah, cotton, because that comes from a plant, corn.
- 8:13So it's like natural resources. Yes. Even milk powder. That's a commodity. Things that are
- 8:19traded globally is a commodity effectively or things that go into other things. So anyway,
- 8:25you could have invested, you could have invested in cocoa and you would have made double your
- 8:30investment in three months. But the reason is because West Africa has had a number of supply
- 8:37issues. So it's had bad weather disease, all of that. And so this is lead to small supply,
- 8:43not enough supply to cater for the demand. And a peak time like Easter, when everyone wants to
- 8:47eat chocolate, it means there's a huge spike in demand, but they can't keep it with supply. So
- 8:53prices are skyrocketing, which is annoying because we kind of have got over the inflation
- 9:00chat. And we're like, I just realized that we didn't really have a good buy inflation party.
- 9:06No. Or talk about the fact, you know, when you, if someone like has a chiptoat, you're like chip,
- 9:11chiptoat, chiptoat. And then as soon as it's fixed, you kind of forget it was chips. Yeah.
- 9:14I sort of forgot about inflation. Yeah, it's like an annoying sound. And then you don't, you
- 9:20slowly start not notice it. And then when it goes away, you're like, oh, anyway, we could use
- 9:25metaphors to the cows come home. I didn't even find that one. So Africa is in control of
- 9:37six percent of global cocoa. So they're having issues, means prices are going up. And so we might
- 9:43see what we call shrinkflation, which is your eggs make it a little smaller. Oh my god. My
- 9:51this guy I've just moved in with this morning was making his bagels and he's like, have you heard
- 9:55of shrinkflation? I was like, I have actually, he was like, my bagels are swear, I like half the size
- 10:01that they used to be. It's so annoying. Yeah. So we might see some sort of shrinkflation. But
- 10:08this is the worst supply of cocoa in 60 years. And we're probably going to see these impacts for
- 10:14another two years still. So yes. Happy Easter, everyone. In other news, we've got an update on
- 10:24WeWork actually. We actually had a meeting at a WeWork yesterday. Oh, yeah, we did. It was
- 10:28good. Yeah. It's actually quite nice when you're like, talk about things and then you experience.
- 10:33And this is, I know that you're taking the first, but it is actually quite a good example of how
- 10:38you can interact with your investments outside of your computer screen at the stock market. Yeah.
- 10:43Because you're right. That's such a good example of like, okay, what does it look like in here?
- 10:48Is it a vibe? Is it full? Is it indeed like? Is it, even though it's a product? Is it
- 10:54the discs and tatters? Is everyone saying hi or not? You know, yeah, you can just get a vibe
- 10:59check. Well, it's a product. Yeah. Yeah. So anyway, so the founder, Adam Newman, he has reportedly made
- 11:07an offer to buy back the business. Wait, so why do he leave in the first place? So he got kicked out.
- 11:13Well, he supposedly stepped down. He got voted out effectively because he was too outrageous and
- 11:18crazy. But anyway, so he stepped down a CEO in 2019. And he's wanted to get back in for a long
- 11:27time now. And remember, I think it was November last year. They went bankrupt. So it went from
- 11:33like a $47 billion company. And now he's been betting for at 500 million. Like quite kind of
- 11:40opportunistic. I think it's just pretty cool that he's coming back after years. He's still like,
- 11:46no, I still believe in this business. I still want to be the CEO. And now, imagine if he creates
- 11:51all that value again in the business and gets a back to $40 billion business, he would have made a
- 11:56killing. But it was so right. He's putting aside by coming back again. You know, if he, if something,
- 12:02I don't know, he got kicked out again, because he just didn't align with the strategic direction
- 12:08of Apple, got kicked out. When was this? Then he came back. Oh, this was like in the 80s. I want
- 12:15to say. And then he came back and took that business from strength to strength. Really? Yeah.
- 12:20See, like I do think that's sort of a not to gender it. But I think if someone gives me feedback
- 12:25or constructive criticism or says no or whatever, you really do have to have such strong belief in
- 12:31yourself to come back again and again. And I don't know. I think there's also a lot of people,
- 12:38a lot of sorry, there's also a lot of CEOs that stand in the way of and think they know, right,
- 12:44and can make the appropriate decisions for their business when sometimes an outside of you
- 12:49can be a lot better. So it's almost getting moving away from your ego, stepping aside, letting
- 12:55someone else that might be a bit more skilled and running a bigger business or something like that
- 13:00to take the reins and you benefit. But sometimes people are like, no, I want to be the leader
- 13:05or I'm out. You know that there could be a bit of, I don't want to be told what to do. And
- 13:09anyway, but quite interesting that when they filed for bankruptcy, this allowed them to renegotiate
- 13:15all the leases that they have on their properties. Well, most of them in the US and in Canada. So
- 13:19they're now in a much stronger position financially, because they've got all these new terms and
- 13:25lease agreements. So I don't know, it'd be interesting to see what happens, but quite if you to
- 13:31people that kicked them out. Do you think, though, bankruptcy, just hearing you talk about the
- 13:36way in which now they're in a better position financially, surely all the landlords and all of those
- 13:40people kind of effed over by the new deals, right? So can you strategically bankrupt yourself to
- 13:49for something like this to happen? You can, but I think there's a role around if you go bankrupt,
- 13:55if you're a director of a business that goes bankrupt, you can't then start a new business for
- 13:59seven years. See that. Yeah, there's something around that. So if the curve went bankrupt,
- 14:04we couldn't start. I just blame you. Yeah. It was all thanks, babe. So like the final
- 14:11hour, I was just sitting here and you ran up to the studio to get your phones and I said,
- 14:15if they come in, I'm going to blame it on site and say, oh, my business partner, I thought,
- 14:18my business partner, I thought she did it. Sorry, sorry, sorry, just blame it. And you're
- 14:24going to be like, what? Anyway, okay. So other news and we're a bit late to the party with this one,
- 14:31but we didn't do a curve weekly last week, read it his IPO. And it was up 50% on the day that it
- 14:39IPO'd. That just doesn't surprise me. It's coward to the people, you know, to the people, but
- 14:45so it would jumped up 50% on the day and kind of finished down. Can you give context for people
- 14:49who might not know who's invested in it? Some people might have missed the memo that it was
- 14:54so read it the social media platform IPO, which means it publicly listed its shares for the first
- 15:00time. So you and me job logs, we can all buy shares if we want to. And some of its users actually
- 15:08got access to buy shares. So it was kind of this whole power to the people. We're going to open up
- 15:13the IPO to our users as well as everyday retail investors. But anyway, so it did really well. So
- 15:20it shot up 50% and then kind of came down a bit, but ended up 30% which is amazing for an IPO.
- 15:26Like, particularly, it's quite a risky investment. Nobody knows what what it's going to do if there's
- 15:30going to be people once at IPOs that are still going to buy shares or did everyone get what they wanted
- 15:36at the IPO and therefore they're not going to buy more. You know, you want to create that support
- 15:40and that hype once at IPOs as well. So anyway, how are they even monetizing as advertising?
- 15:45Yeah, yeah. It's valued at $6.5 billion now. And just the other day, a short report came out.
- 15:54So this is a hedge fund that has short a whole lot of reddit shares, which means they profit
- 16:02if the share price falls. The mechanisms of shorting stock, we can get into another day, but it's
- 16:07effectively when you borrow a stock. So you, I'd go to you and say, hey, can I borrow this? And you
- 16:12want the price to fall. So let's come out with a short report being like reddit has over hyped
- 16:17it's it's user growth. It is just IPO did a really opportunistic time. We think that the user growth
- 16:24is going to fall off a cliff like all this stuff, which is spoke to people people are like, oh,
- 16:28you guys probably know what you're talking about. What if it turns into a main stock where all the
- 16:33people band together and then they're like, do you know what? Actually, if you hedge fund, we're all
- 16:36going to buy it and then you're going to be absolutely screwed. Yeah, well, it's funny because reddit
- 16:40was the platform that all the meme stocks started. So for everyone that's never listened to this
- 16:45podcast before or maybe missed the full memo. So meme stocks, there was bedbath and beyond,
- 16:51there was stop. Game stop, even the word sounds iconic now. Basically, what happened was actually,
- 16:58I think I can not explain it. So what happened is that people got onto reddit and were like, hey,
- 17:04this company's share prices down in the dumps, but let's all band together and buy it. And it's
- 17:10because hedge funds were short the stock of say, bedbath and beyond. And they're like, let's
- 17:15fuck with the hedge funds. Let's fuck with the big people that and the reason that they're
- 17:18fucking with them is because if the share price goes up, they will buying it as an even on reddit
- 17:23buys bedbath and beyond. And this hedge fund is short the stock. It means that they could go out
- 17:26of business. They lose so much money. So every time the share price goes up and if it goes up and
- 17:31up and up and up, they're losing money. Hand over fist for infinity really until the share price
- 17:37stopped going up. So this was like, let's, let's screw with the big, big guys in the ivory tower,
- 17:42you know, like, let's power to the people. And they did. And a lot of hedge funds went bust,
- 17:47they lost so much money. And so it's quite funny that now, and I honestly was expecting for someone
- 17:56to come out. If your platform is screwing with hedge funds, the hedge funds are going to come
- 18:00after you. Do you know, it's like a bit of cat and mouse. It's like, oh, do you think they're doing
- 18:05a bit of a, oh, totally. It's like, it wouldn't be, wouldn't be publicizing very platform that could
- 18:10do the exact same thing again. Yeah. To make, like, it's basically like being like, here's my big
- 18:16weak spot. Come and shoot me. Yeah. Yeah. It's also just like, chill. Stop trying to get one up on
- 18:23each other. You know, I'm here for the drama. Yeah. I'm here for the drama. Yeah. Yeah.
- 18:29Anyway, so it's two prices for them quite a bit in the last week. I think it's about 11%. So it's
- 18:35still, it's still above its IPO price, but this has spooked a few investors. Dan, and you're going
- 18:44to hate this one. Oh God. Oil companies are doing really well in McDonald's. You know what I was
- 18:50saying the other day to serve just off the record. So my lower budgeting was no breach for year.
- 18:59And lower budgeting for anyone that missed it is this TikTok trend that was like, you basically
- 19:04broadcast something that you're committing to not spend money on a budget on. And like,
- 19:08everyone can keep your accountable because you've shouted it from the rooftops. So yeah,
- 19:12I'm not using Uber Eats for a year. That's what I'm shouting. Oh my gosh. We didn't kick
- 19:17it out. We kicked it out. It's not really, really. Anyway, they, oh my god, it sounds like someone's
- 19:21coming. Well, you're going to say you'd make you've saved Eats. Sorry. Sorry. That's finishing that
- 19:25story. Gosh, I've had two coffees. I'm a bit scared of brain. We're finishing that story. I
- 19:30have not only saved Eats, but I've realized how much McDonald's I used to eat because that was
- 19:35literally probably the most popular thing that I would order off Uber Eats. And the other day,
- 19:40I was like, should I get McDonald's? I was like, I cannot remember the last time I had McDonald's.
- 19:46Which I know for you, you know, vegan, healthy, vegan, but you're all like very, very
- 19:52health conscious. I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, burger, let's just do it. Whereas I feel like
- 19:58you would probably starve and then go home and make your own cashew mayonnaise or something.
- 20:02I'm so impressed that you think that's who I am and that I'm still giving off that vibe. I'm
- 20:06real happy to hear it. I remember living with you and you were like, making your own cashew mayonnaise
- 20:10or some shit. I was like, I was like, girl, just buy it. Honestly, like the time it's taking you,
- 20:15I would be so angry that I would bet anything. Sorry, we're getting so excited.
- 20:19Before we do it back onto it, I think you need to confess something about your other loud
- 20:23budgeting. Because they've had too loud budgeting. Because it's coming from you. You haven't
- 20:28even done one. No, but you did minute. I know, but I didn't commit. You did. I know, but
- 20:32we're not having a fight on the podcast. I broke my coffee one. I can't believe you didn't
- 20:44think I'd bring that up. I know. So Vic made another loud budgeting, which was she wasn't
- 20:48going to spend more than two, like she wasn't going to send money on more than two take-where
- 20:53coffees. And it's so hard on London. When you're running from A to B or I don't even have a place
- 20:58to live so I don't have a coffee machine. I reckon it's that you knew no one knows you in London
- 21:03and you could get away with it. And if someone had me up, I'd be like, no, no, this is just my first
- 21:07one for the week. Anyway, sorry, we can get back to whatever we want. Sorry, Vic. Like throw me
- 21:13out of the bus, but I don't have any of my own loud budget. Anyway, yes. So McDonald's has just
- 21:21done a deal with crispy cream donuts. So you'll be able to go to McDonald's, certain locations in
- 21:27the US and you'll be able to buy donuts with your big Mac combo. I know. I'm just like, my heart
- 21:34is hurting just hearing that. Oh, that's good though. Yeah. People go off for crispy rings.
- 21:40Crispy cream is pretty iconic. They're at the airport. And I always
- 21:44if people are getting like trays and trays of them. And I'm just like, I don't think I've never
- 21:48had one. Really? I mean, the little and Friday donuts in Auckland. If you're ever in Auckland,
- 21:53shout out to little and Friday. Oh my god. The original glazed crispy creams. You bite into them
- 21:59and they kind of melt probably because then 99.9% fat. Yeah. But they are pretty. Well, maybe a tie-up
- 22:06between McDonald's and crispy cream works then. I thought you were going to say they put the
- 22:10burger in the doughnut. I mean, they could have. But anyway, crispy cream from a revenue generating
- 22:14perspective, they generated nearly $2 billion in revenue from donuts last year.
- 22:23What would you mark up there? You should be paying that much money. That's crazy. And they've
- 22:27maintained revenue growth every year for the last 10 years. So they've maintained a decade
- 22:33streak of revenue growth year after year after year. So for the last 10 years,
- 22:36the revenue is growing year on year on year. But I find public. Really? Which I find fascinating,
- 22:43considering we're moving into world with health, wellness and donuts are growing. The sales
- 22:49of donuts are growing more more. I think that our bubble and people we know are, I think it's
- 22:56it's a privilege to be able to eat healthy and to know about how good XYZ is for your body
- 23:04when it comes to exercise or food or any kind of nutrition. I actually think,
- 23:10yeah, I do think we're in like a privileged bubble of being able to look after our health. And
- 23:14it is a massive percentage of the world who just wouldn't cross your mind. I don't know. It wouldn't
- 23:21be like, oh, this is unhealthy. It's like, well, if I think back to when I was younger and what
- 23:24what I do, I crispy cream. Yeah, like what I didn't know about food and how food is energy and,
- 23:32you know, if you eat bad food, but if you eat bad food, that's going to impact your
- 23:39your focus, your energy, you're just like your day to day living. But yeah, if you don't know that
- 23:43and you're privy to that, it'd be so hard to function as well as anyway. Yeah, there's like so many
- 23:49aspects having good health. Anyway, so they've had the stellar run of growth and he runs kind of
- 23:53like what's next, what's next. So then the fact that they've announced this deal with McDonald's.
- 23:58Huge. It's huge. Yeah, it's going to be going to be in nearly 14,000 locations in the U.S.
- 24:04And in the U.S. And it was up 40% on this announcement.
- 24:09I really feel like a diner. Should we go the trait? I think we deserve it, actually.
- 24:14I've been treating myself though. I think it's just like the shit with her. And I'm like, oh,
- 24:18I'll just get a bag of oil. It's a treat. It's not a treat like you. I know. I've become one
- 24:25and I hate it. Give me some french fries any day the week breakfast lunch or dinner.
- 24:29I don't. Sorry. Well, now I can go to McDonald's and get a diner and you can get some french fries.
- 24:36We actually didn't practice that ending. And hopefully.
- 24:41And fancy. Yeah. Fancy Nancy. Yeah. Okay, with this ending, we don't have anywhere to be.
- 24:47We're really happy to be here. And maybe we'll just stay on the line.
- 24:50Yeah, we'll stay here. I feel like we're about to get kicked out.
