Transcript
- 0:01Speaker 1: A Small Show, The Smallsy Show tonight's first guest. She
- 0:05Speaker 1: is the star of Your Fault London, the brand new
- 0:09Speaker 1: movie that is out on prime video. She's also a
- 0:11Speaker 1: singer as well. Her name is Asha Banks. She's got
- 0:14Speaker 1: a brand new track out right now. It is in
- 0:16Speaker 1: the movie as well. It's called come Down and it
- 0:19Speaker 1: sounds like this. Oh I like the sound of that.
- 0:38Speaker 1: The movie is out as well. It's called Your Fault London.
- 0:40Speaker 1: Take a listen to this and let's get.
- 0:42Speaker 2: Her on the only thing heard of him finding true love.
- 0:48Speaker 2: He's holding on to it. Hello, this is a shirt Banks,
- 0:52Speaker 2: don't forget about me when you're at Oxford on the
- 0:55Speaker 2: Small Show. Unia is literally for exploring your options from
- 0:59Speaker 2: ers from London.
- 1:02Speaker 3: Well, hello and welcome to the show.
- 1:04Speaker 1: Twelve months ago, Asher, we chatted about a little movie
- 1:08Speaker 1: project you were making, and it was I want to
- 1:11Speaker 1: say the My Fault series was like the sort of
- 1:14Speaker 1: beginning of the whole book tok Pandemonium that has now
- 1:20Speaker 1: like taken over the internet.
- 1:23Speaker 2: Thank you, I'll take that.
- 1:24Speaker 1: And you were like ground zero. Yeah, you were like
- 1:27Speaker 1: ground zero.
- 1:28Speaker 2: So I felt like we have to say that. Kopermea,
- 1:30Speaker 2: the Spanish version probably was was ground was like.
- 1:34Speaker 3: I meant you your your movie. Yes, like the move
- 1:37Speaker 3: but the movie crossover movement. No, no, no, no.
- 1:41Speaker 1: The movie was like the like when they were taking
- 1:44Speaker 1: all of the whatpad stuff and then you were like
- 1:46Speaker 1: the first one that they kind of that went virally insane.
- 1:51Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:51Speaker 3: And then the last time I saw you, we were
- 1:53Speaker 3: driving race cars. We were yeah, still goes down.
- 1:56Speaker 1: It was a bloody cold day in the middle of February,
- 1:59Speaker 1: but it was a lot of fun.
- 2:01Speaker 2: It was so much fun, quite cruel. The day after
- 2:03Speaker 2: the premiere, they were like, get in race cars.
- 2:05Speaker 3: Zoom around.
- 2:06Speaker 1: Absolutely, Hey, so catch me up. What's been happening since then?
- 2:11Speaker 2: Oh, my goodness, so so so much. I feel like
- 2:13Speaker 2: it's been the busiest year ever, which has been just amazing.
- 2:16Speaker 2: It's been a lot of a lot of filming for
- 2:18Speaker 2: the My Fault World universe. Yeah, we filmed obviously the
- 2:22Speaker 2: second movie and then also the third movie.
- 2:25Speaker 1: Oh so you've done them all. We've done sort of simultaneously,
- 2:28Speaker 1: like Back to Bad.
- 2:29Speaker 2: We did the second movie and then had a month
- 2:30Speaker 2: off and then did the third movie. So right, they're
- 2:34Speaker 2: all filmed, which is crazy, Okay, and then I've been
- 2:36Speaker 2: doing just so much music stuff you have.
- 2:38Speaker 3: You've been a busy little bee, busy bee.
- 2:41Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 2:41Speaker 3: So look, we'll get to.
- 2:43Speaker 1: The movie in a second. Let's unpack the music. The
- 2:46Speaker 1: new song is out. It sounds great.
- 2:49Speaker 2: Thank you so much.
- 2:49Speaker 1: As an artist, where do you see yourself?
- 2:52Speaker 3: Who do you listen to? What inspires you so much?
- 2:56Speaker 2: I listened to like a ridiculous amount of music, But
- 2:59Speaker 2: I would say the artists that the sort of inspired
- 3:03Speaker 2: me the most. That I'm probably like an amalgamation of
- 3:05Speaker 2: ore like Noah con Bonivar and then of course like
- 3:10Speaker 2: Lizzie mccalpine and Gracie Abrams and like.
- 3:13Speaker 1: So basically all of the artists that come up underneath
- 3:16Speaker 1: you as similar artists.
- 3:17Speaker 3: Yeah, I suppose that that's literally all that everything that is. Yeah,
- 3:20Speaker 3: it's actually cool.
- 3:21Speaker 2: Spotify, I've got it.
- 3:22Speaker 3: That algorithm works good. Hey doesn't it?
- 3:25Speaker 2: Oh? Yeah, it does.
- 3:27Speaker 3: Weird question, what's your first love? Is that the music?
- 3:30Speaker 3: Is it the acting?
- 3:31Speaker 1: Because also too, I think I said this to you
- 3:33Speaker 1: last time. Actors are a little bit weird. Can be
- 3:38Speaker 1: strange in the sense that, like you spend your entire
- 3:41Speaker 1: careers being someone else. Yeah, but music requires you to
- 3:45Speaker 1: spend all of the time telling your story and it's very,
- 3:50Speaker 1: very rarely do those two world sort of collide.
- 3:54Speaker 2: Yeah, I hope that. I hope that I sort of
- 3:57Speaker 2: balance out the weirdness of both skills.
- 4:00Speaker 3: So far, so good.
- 4:01Speaker 2: Somewhere in the middle. Yeah, I feel like my first
- 4:03Speaker 2: love was probably this is such a cop out, but
- 4:06Speaker 2: it was probably just performing, Okay, which for me in
- 4:09Speaker 2: capsulates both. Like I think I just loved like dressing
- 4:12Speaker 2: up and whether that was singing or like dancing or
- 4:14Speaker 2: like acting like it was whatever, Just.
- 4:16Speaker 3: Like, are you one of those kids?
- 4:17Speaker 1: Oh?
- 4:18Speaker 2: It was probably the most annoying child. My parents probably
- 4:20Speaker 2: like put her in some way of yes, she's got
- 4:24Speaker 2: the princess outfit on again.
- 4:25Speaker 3: Yeah, okay, well look at you now. It was worth it.
- 4:28Speaker 3: It was worth it. Yes, thank you.
- 4:30Speaker 1: For those countless hours. Okay, So performing in.
- 4:33Speaker 3: General, yeah, I think so.
- 4:35Speaker 1: Yeah, And then where did you sort of start taking
- 4:40Speaker 1: it seriously? Because I think like, if you're a performer kid,
- 4:44Speaker 1: sometimes you know, the growing up world kicks seeing and
- 4:46Speaker 1: you go, Okay, I'm going to go to university. But
- 4:48Speaker 1: then you're like, now I'm going to stick this out.
- 4:51Speaker 2: Yeah. I think that, like I mean, I started doing
- 4:53Speaker 2: theater when I was like like seven or something, which
- 4:56Speaker 2: is crazy, and it meant that I was working a child,
- 5:00Speaker 2: and I think that that just filled me with the delusion,
- 5:03Speaker 2: the blind delusion that to kind of carry on. Yeah,
- 5:06Speaker 2: and having my family and my parents be so like
- 5:09Speaker 2: supportive and sort of allow me to do that, and yeah,
- 5:13Speaker 2: that was there was never really a question, which is
- 5:15Speaker 2: a very lucky place.
- 5:16Speaker 3: That's great.
- 5:16Speaker 1: Yeah, the song, the new song that is out in
- 5:20Speaker 1: line with the movie as well, which is great that
- 5:22Speaker 1: you get to be in the film and then also
- 5:24Speaker 1: have a song in the film as well.
- 5:26Speaker 2: It's a dream. Amazon insane for letting me do it twice.
- 5:29Speaker 3: Yeah, did they did you have to pitch it?
- 5:32Speaker 1: Did they find out that you actually because like this
- 5:35Speaker 1: is the thing is like sometimes you can meet people
- 5:37Speaker 1: who go I like to sing, and then it's like,
- 5:39Speaker 1: how good of a singer actually are?
- 5:40Speaker 3: You know?
- 5:41Speaker 1: Like, did you did were they aware that you actually
- 5:44Speaker 1: were like it was more than just a hobby, like
- 5:45Speaker 1: you actually were quite good at it and then they
- 5:47Speaker 1: invited you to do it or how did that go?
- 5:49Speaker 2: I feel like I sort of forced it upon them,
- 5:51Speaker 2: Like I finished filming the first movie and I've been
- 5:53Speaker 2: writing music for like forever, but had been taking seriously
- 5:56Speaker 2: for like, you know, probably a couple of years by then,
- 5:59Speaker 2: but hadn't released anything. And I met Danny and Charlotte,
- 6:01Speaker 2: who were the directors of the movie, and they have
- 6:03Speaker 2: a long history of music and music videos, and sort
- 6:06Speaker 2: of started telling them about it, and we got really
- 6:08Speaker 2: close and playing them my music and stuff. And then
- 6:10Speaker 2: the film finished and I just wrote a song for
- 6:12Speaker 2: the credits, and I was like, this is my secret dream.
- 6:15Speaker 2: And then I have to like imprint on everybody else.
- 6:17Speaker 3: Okay.
- 6:17Speaker 2: I wrote the song and then sent it to Danny
- 6:19Speaker 2: and Charlotte and was like, just.
- 6:22Speaker 1: Did we manifest it or did we we earned some
- 6:24Speaker 1: like candles and lights and I don't know crystals.
- 6:27Speaker 2: My manifestation just materialized in me sending it to everybody
- 6:31Speaker 2: and saying.
- 6:32Speaker 3: It's I've known it. Yeah, yeah, you put it in. Sorry.
- 6:35Speaker 3: I wrote the song for.
- 6:37Speaker 2: I had a secret power because yeah, like I'm the
- 6:39Speaker 2: only one that's played nowhere was finished filming, and I
- 6:41Speaker 2: was like, I'm the only one who has her perspective
- 6:42Speaker 2: and knows how the movie finishes.
- 6:45Speaker 3: I love that start.
- 6:46Speaker 1: I love that now, I said we're going to talk
- 6:49Speaker 1: about It's your fault now, right, it's your fault London?
- 6:52Speaker 2: Uh?
- 6:53Speaker 1: Part of the first one, where does it wrapping up
- 6:56Speaker 1: for people?
- 6:57Speaker 2: Give a quick reminder the first film up with Nick
- 7:01Speaker 2: and Noah sort of have come together and against all odds,
- 7:04Speaker 2: have found each other and are healing together, I suppose
- 7:08Speaker 2: after a very tumultuous end movie.
- 7:10Speaker 1: And we're still yearning though for each other, right, always
- 7:12Speaker 1: yearning that never finishes. Okay, And now in your Fault
- 7:15Speaker 1: are we yearning two x or are we yearning for
- 7:18Speaker 1: other people?
- 7:18Speaker 3: What's going on?
- 7:19Speaker 2: Arguably a bit of both.
- 7:21Speaker 3: Okay.
- 7:21Speaker 2: The second movie, you Know starts We're a year into
- 7:24Speaker 2: their relationship. They're very comfortable with each other, but Noah
- 7:27Speaker 2: is going to Oxford University and Nick is heavily in
- 7:31Speaker 2: throws of work with his father, so they face challenges.
- 7:35Speaker 3: For sure, Did you go to university? No?
- 7:38Speaker 2: Definitely not Oxford, But I'm like, yes, no, live my Dream?
- 7:43Speaker 3: I did a Yeah it was did you film on
- 7:46Speaker 3: at Oxford?
- 7:47Speaker 2: We did? Yeah? Which is crazy?
- 7:48Speaker 3: Is there like protocol to do that? I don't know.
- 7:50Speaker 1: I probably very like a prestigious place to be where
- 7:55Speaker 1: you just can't not they won't let anyone in.
- 7:57Speaker 3: Just the Hello walls we filmed.
- 7:59Speaker 2: We didn't film inside the university, but we filmed in
- 8:03Speaker 2: some of the like the dorm areas, which was cool,
- 8:06Speaker 2: but it was very like so full of tourists. And
- 8:08Speaker 2: then we had a vintage Porsche parked outside, so I
- 8:11Speaker 2: think everybody just cared about the car.
- 8:12Speaker 3: Yep, no, I get that.
- 8:14Speaker 1: So you're yearning in my fault and your fault. But
- 8:17Speaker 1: then simultaneously we're on smut talk over and off campus
- 8:22Speaker 1: as well.
- 8:22Speaker 3: You've got the.
- 8:23Speaker 1: Song, you got the song on the on the mixtape
- 8:25Speaker 1: soundtrack for the show You have Ya.
- 8:27Speaker 2: Wow, I seem to be just across any yearning prime video.
- 8:30Speaker 3: Yeah, absolutely you do. How did that one happen?
- 8:34Speaker 2: That was just amazing. I went in and met with
- 8:36Speaker 2: some of the Amazon Sync team and played them some music,
- 8:38Speaker 2: and too Busy Missing You was one that I'd written
- 8:41Speaker 2: very recent like recently prior to that, not about off
- 8:44Speaker 2: campus and just about my life and you know, as
- 8:46Speaker 2: I usually write songs, and they really loved it and
- 8:48Speaker 2: felt like it would be a great fit for the show.
- 8:50Speaker 2: And yeah, I was told about it and said, yes, yes, definitely.
- 8:53Speaker 1: Are you a big book, girly yourself. Are you into
- 8:57Speaker 1: the highly Eurotic novels?
- 8:59Speaker 2: Highly Eurotic novel I mean, since I feel like since
- 9:02Speaker 2: your fault, I've had a baptism of fire in terms.
- 9:04Speaker 1: Well, you have to write because that had that that
- 9:06Speaker 1: that series had such a passionate fan that you could
- 9:12Speaker 1: not be across the work that you were then turning
- 9:17Speaker 1: into a movie. Sure, the same I would imagine is
- 9:19Speaker 1: off campus. You're going to be putting a song on
- 9:21Speaker 1: this central Well, one must read the book, one must,
- 9:24Speaker 1: one must.
- 9:24Speaker 2: And I just became so so aware of it since
- 9:27Speaker 2: since my fault on your Foot it was, you know,
- 9:29Speaker 2: the next huge book adaptation on Prime again. And yeah,
- 9:34Speaker 2: so when I was approached about it, I was like, guys,
- 9:35Speaker 2: this is going to be huge, Like I need to
- 9:39Speaker 2: like have this song in this just because it's amazing
- 9:41Speaker 2: and it.
- 9:41Speaker 1: Has gone absolutely wild, Yeah, absolutely wild.
- 9:45Speaker 3: What's next?
- 9:45Speaker 1: You've done the music and the movies, You've got another
- 9:48Speaker 1: one on the way. Are you doing more movies or
- 9:50Speaker 1: you want to do the full record album? Where are
- 9:53Speaker 1: we putting our energies?
- 9:55Speaker 2: To be honest, it's sort of just directly into both
- 9:58Speaker 2: all at once.
- 9:58Speaker 3: Okay.
- 9:59Speaker 2: I find that like I do.
- 10:00Speaker 3: You have any time off? You've got no spare time? Right?
- 10:03Speaker 2: Not really no, but like I don't need it because
- 10:06Speaker 2: I just am doing what I love, which is just
- 10:08Speaker 2: the best thing in the world. I love that, and
- 10:10Speaker 2: I think because I do like a block of filming
- 10:12Speaker 2: and feel so in filmasher mode, and then I'm able
- 10:14Speaker 2: to sort of switch off from that and go into music,
- 10:16Speaker 2: which fulfills me different in a different way.
- 10:18Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 10:18Speaker 1: All right, last time I saw you, Asher, you and
- 10:21Speaker 1: matt I did this who's at fault?
- 10:23Speaker 3: Game?
- 10:24Speaker 1: But now you're on your own, so you're going to
- 10:26Speaker 1: be taken work with the team. Okay, I'm going to
- 10:28Speaker 1: give you scenarios. Okay, you tell me who you think
- 10:31Speaker 1: is it fault?
- 10:31Speaker 3: Is it? Is it my fault? Or is it your.
- 10:33Speaker 2: Fault and your fault is aimed at Matthew Beerer?
- 10:36Speaker 3: Well whatever, really, it could be whatever. I'm just going
- 10:38Speaker 3: to give scenario. All right.
- 10:40Speaker 1: So last time we talked about taking photos. Go yes, right,
- 10:44Speaker 1: now here's the new one. Who's a fault you? Someone
- 10:48Speaker 1: sends you gossip? Okay, right, spicy hot tea? Okay, someone
- 10:53Speaker 1: reads that tea on your phone over your shoulder. Who
- 10:56Speaker 1: is now at fault for spilling the tea?
- 10:59Speaker 3: Is it you fell?
- 11:00Speaker 1: I think someone read the message over your shoulder, or
- 11:03Speaker 1: is it the person who spilt the tea who shouldn't
- 11:05Speaker 1: have done it in maybe in a text message, should
- 11:07Speaker 1: have said a voice note.
- 11:08Speaker 2: Interesting, that's such. But you use the keyword there, which
- 11:12Speaker 2: was letting. That said person let somebody In that case,
- 11:17Speaker 2: it's definitely their.
- 11:20Speaker 3: Lead to true.
- 11:21Speaker 2: Arguably, if they didn't know it was happening, then what
- 11:23Speaker 2: can you do? And always be careful? What gossip?
- 11:26Speaker 1: You's bread one of those privacy shields on your phone,
- 11:29Speaker 1: you know those ones that you can't see from any I.
- 11:32Speaker 2: Also think the person at fault is probably the one
- 11:34Speaker 2: reading somebody else's phone.
- 11:36Speaker 3: Guilty, I'm sorry, sorry, sorry.
- 11:40Speaker 1: If I see something in the vicinity, I'm like, oh
- 11:41Speaker 1: that looks interesting.
- 11:43Speaker 2: Maybe no one's guilty. Gossip is gossip flies no matter what.
- 11:47Speaker 1: Okay, let's pretend you work at a cafe. Okay, okay,
- 11:50Speaker 1: pretend I shall. You're serving someone. Turns out they have
- 11:54Speaker 1: a nut allergy, but you didn't know.
- 11:58Speaker 3: Okay, so you've served them a meal with nuts.
- 12:00Speaker 1: Yep, who's a fault you for serving them a meal
- 12:03Speaker 1: and not checking or the customer for not identifying the
- 12:07Speaker 1: nut allergy.
- 12:08Speaker 2: I mean it's the servers. The server's job, I think
- 12:13Speaker 2: to double chat.
- 12:14Speaker 3: I think you should take personal response.
- 12:15Speaker 2: Why. I mean, arguably the person should should highlight that
- 12:18Speaker 2: they have a nutalogy. Yes, but also the server is
- 12:21Speaker 2: employed to check.
- 12:23Speaker 3: They all check now too, don't they do?
- 12:25Speaker 2: Oh?
- 12:25Speaker 3: It's so annoying. Can you so ask you if.
- 12:29Speaker 2: You had analogy?
- 12:32Speaker 1: I feel like, you know, what if I had analergy?
- 12:35Speaker 3: You would you would you know before you even had
- 12:37Speaker 3: to ask?
- 12:37Speaker 2: True? But then maybe then there before people get kind
- 12:40Speaker 2: of casual with energies where they're like, I know, I know,
- 12:42Speaker 2: and then suddenly the employers almond milk.
- 12:45Speaker 1: Okay, all right, here we go. Last one for you.
- 12:49Speaker 1: Who's the fault you or my fault? Your soft launch?
- 12:53Speaker 1: Your new relationship on Instagram? But your partner hasn't told
- 12:56Speaker 1: key people in their life that they're dating you. Who's
- 13:00Speaker 1: felt you for seft launching without permission or there for
- 13:03Speaker 1: just not taking personal responsibility in their own life and
- 13:06Speaker 1: letting people know what's going on.
- 13:07Speaker 2: Oh that's a hard one, feels feels pointed to the
- 13:11Speaker 2: film as well, which I've seen you've done that. Yeah,
- 13:14Speaker 2: I actually, I actually think it might be. I can't
- 13:19Speaker 2: remember which way around it is, but the fault of
- 13:20Speaker 2: the person for selft launching without permission?
- 13:22Speaker 3: Oh you think?
- 13:23Speaker 2: I do think that that has to be That should
- 13:25Speaker 2: be a discussion. That should Okay, that should be a.
- 13:28Speaker 1: We're not hard launching. It's a purely a soft launch.
- 13:31Speaker 1: Soft launch implies we could just be very close.
- 13:36Speaker 2: True, but then maybe but then in that case maybe
- 13:39Speaker 2: the family members will assume the same thing. I won't know.
- 13:42Speaker 3: Good point.
- 13:43Speaker 2: I think that's a that's a discussion to have in
- 13:45Speaker 2: the relationship, whether you should solf launch or not. But
- 13:47Speaker 2: then arguably the person should probably tell that.
- 13:50Speaker 1: And also, what's a big secret? Why do you want
- 13:52Speaker 1: to tell people that were it together? Like why it's
- 13:54Speaker 1: the shame?
- 13:54Speaker 2: No, one wouldn't like it, No, she wouldn't.
- 13:56Speaker 1: Absolutely absolutely wouldn't You played shows across the US last year? Yes,
- 14:02Speaker 1: any plans to go on the rest of the world
- 14:04Speaker 1: and play shows around the rest of the world.
- 14:06Speaker 3: Would that be a dream? Yeah?
- 14:07Speaker 2: Oh my god, absolutely, one hundred percent. I just love
- 14:10Speaker 2: playing shows so much though, I just ship me anywhere,
- 14:14Speaker 2: like I'd love to.
- 14:15Speaker 1: Okay, great, well, you're welcome to come to Australia. We
- 14:18Speaker 1: love them, we love the music, we love the movies,
- 14:20Speaker 1: we love everything you do.
- 14:22Speaker 2: So I will definitely.
- 14:23Speaker 1: Congratulations on everything. Thanks for catching up again. Thank you
- 14:26Speaker 1: so much on this scorching hot day. By the way,
- 14:29Speaker 1: the last time I saw you, it was freezing cold
- 14:31Speaker 1: and I had this stupid fur hat on. Now it's
- 14:35Speaker 1: like thirty five degrees in I sweat and ball. Apparently
- 14:38Speaker 1: this building doesn't have air conditioning.
- 14:39Speaker 3: Did you know that?
- 14:40Speaker 2: What's happening here?
- 14:41Speaker 1: It's recirculated cool air. That is well no, but it's
- 14:45Speaker 1: not cooled cool. It's not like air conditioner, hotel air conditioner.
- 14:49Speaker 2: They've taken the cold air.
- 14:50Speaker 3: Yeah, which is.
- 14:51Speaker 1: Why it's steaming up in this room. Anyway, goat to
- 14:54Speaker 1: see you.
- 14:54Speaker 2: Thank you, great to see you.
