- 0:00Man, the mental being the mental capacities that are associated
- 0:06with the human species, are considered to be our unique
- 0:09trait distinguishing humanity from the rest of the animal
- 0:13Kingdom. We drive this narrative with a
- 0:16focus on training and developing the mind in our schools.
- 0:20We believe that knowledge resides in our mental abilities.
- 0:25We measure intelligence through tests that are designed for the
- 0:29mind. We look up to scientists,
- 0:32philosophers, deep thinkers as models for the expression of
- 0:37human knowledge. We are essentially brain centric
- 0:41in the way we view and understand the power of
- 0:44knowledge and its impact on our lives.
- 0:48Spiritual paths of develop which are based in this mental view of
- 0:52knowledge. Deep training of the mind such
- 0:56as through mindfulness training. Vypasana, Raja Yoga, and Nyani
- 1:00Yoga have explored the constitution and the boundaries
- 1:05of the mental powers. The paths based in the mind have
- 1:09tended toward more abstraction and distance from the life in
- 1:14the world. But knowledge is not limited to
- 1:18that of the mind. There are other powers and
- 1:22elements of our being, and they each have their own unique forms
- 1:26of knowledge, whether we can formulate them in mental terms
- 1:30or not. Even the physical body has
- 1:33certain forms of inherent knowledge which it does not
- 1:37share with the mind directly. How else can we heal from a
- 1:41wound? How indeed can our entire
- 1:45physical system function with all the complex interactions
- 1:49that occur and the interrelations that take place
- 1:53in the segments of the physical body itself without some innate
- 1:58knowledge at work there? There is a vital intelligence
- 2:02that responds to the vibrations virtually automatically without
- 2:06mental analysis. Whether we are looking at the
- 2:09phenomena of the alpha male or the pecking order, we find a non
- 2:14mental response in the vital being to a hidden power dynamic
- 2:18that is taking place between people.
- 2:22Various researchers in the West have begun to appreciate that
- 2:26there are indeed other valuable forms of knowledge not bounded
- 2:30within the methods and framework of the mind.
- 2:34There is, for instance, an entire body of knowledge related
- 2:37to what is called emotional intelligence.
- 2:42The ancient paths of yoga recognize this with the
- 2:45development of the yoga of love and devotion, Bhakti Yoga.
- 2:50This yoga focuses on the almost intuitive knowledge of truth
- 2:54that comes through receptivity, aspiration and an outflowing of
- 2:59love that creates a direct relation with the divine being.
- 3:04This relation provides an innate non mental form of knowledge
- 3:09that directly knows the divine will and seeks to carry it out,
- 3:15Sriorobindo writes. Quote If knowledge is the widest
- 3:20power of the consciousness, and its function is to free and
- 3:23illumine, yet love is the deepest and most intense, and
- 3:29its privilege is to be the key to the most profound and secret
- 3:33recesses of the Divine. Mystery Man, because he is a
- 3:38mental being, is prone to give the highest importance to the
- 3:42thinking mind and its reason and will, and to its way of
- 3:46approach, an effectuation of truth, and even he is inclined
- 3:51to hold that there is no other. The heart, with its emotions and
- 3:56incalculable movements, is to the eye of his intellect an
- 4:00obscure, uncertain, and often a perilous and misleading power,
- 4:05which needs to be kept in control by the reason and the
- 4:09mental will and intelligence. And yet there is in the heart or
- 4:14behind it, a profounder Mystic light, which, if not what we
- 4:19call intuition, for that, though not of the mind, yet descends
- 4:23through the mind, has yet a direct touch upon truth, and is
- 4:28nearer to the Divine than the human intellect in its pride of
- 4:33knowledge. According to the ancient
- 4:36teaching, the seat of the imminent Divine, the hidden
- 4:40Purusha, is in the Mystic heart, the secret hard cave, Hrudayeh
- 4:46Guhaya, as the Upanishads put it.
- 4:50And according to the experience of many Yogans, it is from its
- 4:54depths that there come the voice or the breath of the inner
- 4:59Oracle. End Quote Reference Srioro Bindu
