- 0:05Speaker 1: We come at you on a Wednesday, a Yacht Rock Wednesday.
- 0:08Speaker 1: Glad to have you with us here on this Wednesday
- 0:10Speaker 1: afternoon on Sports Radio AM 13 Under the Zone, where
- 0:13Speaker 1: you can always listen to us absolutely free of charge
- 0:16Speaker 1: on the iHeartRadio app. Good afternoon, everybody. Welcome to the program.
- 0:20Speaker 1: My name is Craig Wade. Thanks very much for joining us.
- 0:23Speaker 1: Thanks for putting up with Jake Herman yesterday. No, Jake
- 0:25Speaker 1: did a fine job stepping in for me. I was
- 0:27Speaker 1: out handling a couple of personal things. And Jake.
- 0:34Speaker 1: It sounded like when I did tune in a couple
- 0:37Speaker 1: of times, it sounded like you were having a good
- 0:38Speaker 1: time doing it yesterday.
- 0:39Speaker 3: Yeah, we had a lot to discuss. A lot to discuss.
- 0:42Speaker 3: Kind of started and closed the show talking. longhorn football
- 0:46Speaker 3: figured it was our last good chance to dive into
- 0:49Speaker 3: kind of what went wrong in the red river rivalry
- 0:52Speaker 3: what needs.
- 0:52Speaker 1: Oh no it's never too late to dive into what
- 0:55Speaker 1: went wrong talking about the longhorns that goes on through
- 0:59Speaker 1: the year diving into what went wrong never doubt that
- 1:04Speaker 1: for a moment.
- 1:05Speaker 3: Okay okay yeah i can i can kind of see
- 1:08Speaker 3: that looking around what some of the media pundits are
- 1:10Speaker 3: saying today so you know, I'll trust your wisdom on
- 1:13Speaker 3: that one. But no, we started and closed the show
- 1:15Speaker 3: talking Texas football, had a lot of other interesting things
- 1:18Speaker 3: in the middle when it came to NFL and MLB
- 1:21Speaker 3: with the postseason.
- 1:22Speaker 1: Yeah, MLB postseason does continue tonight. Game three of the
- 1:26Speaker 1: National League Championship Series, Milwaukee already with a very strong
- 1:31Speaker 1: two games to none lead in the best of seven series,
- 1:33Speaker 1: trying to get a stranglehold on it tonight in game
- 1:35Speaker 1: three out in Los Angeles as the series shifts to
- 1:38Speaker 1: Dodger Stadium. Dodgers, the Two non-defending world champs need to
- 1:42Speaker 1: respond in a big way in a hurry in order
- 1:45Speaker 1: to keep this series relevant. If Milwaukee were to win tonight,
- 1:51Speaker 1: the odds of L.A. coming back are next to none.
- 1:54Speaker 1: It's only happened one other time in baseball history with
- 1:57Speaker 1: the Red Sox bouncing back to beat the Yankees. ALCS,
- 2:01Speaker 1: even in a game apiece, Tampa Bay Rays responded well.
- 2:05Speaker 1: with a 3-1 win over the Cleveland Guardians. Travel Day today,
- 2:08Speaker 1: the series shifts to Progressive Field, so they'll play there.
- 2:14Speaker 1: You're too young to remember this, I'm sure. Progressive Field
- 2:17Speaker 1: used to be called Jacob's Field. I do remember that. Okay,
- 2:20Speaker 1: and they used to call it the Jake. See, I
- 2:22Speaker 1: said that because of you.
- 2:24Speaker 2: I played MVP baseball 2005.
- 2:25Speaker 1: Okay, yeah, when it was still that, when it was
- 2:30Speaker 1: still the Jake. So.
- 2:34Speaker 1: In any event, the series will shift to that. I'll
- 2:39Speaker 1: tell you what we have coming up here. In a
- 2:42Speaker 1: few minutes, Greg Tepper, editor-in-chief, Dave Campbell's Texas Football Magazine,
- 2:45Speaker 1: joins us normally on Tuesdays with me being out. Yesterday,
- 2:52Speaker 1: he agreed to pop on today. We're glad to have him.
- 2:56Speaker 1: We'll have Inconceivable later this hour. Some more high school
- 3:01Speaker 1: football programs behaving badly items there in Inconceivable.
- 3:05Speaker 2: What is with that?
- 3:05Speaker 1: I don't know, but it's the season for it. It's happening.
- 3:08Speaker 1: So at that 3 o'clock hour, we'll visit with Sean Kelly,
- 3:12Speaker 1: play-by-play voice of the Florida Gators, get his thoughts on
- 3:14Speaker 1: this Florida team that will come into play Texas. So
- 3:17Speaker 1: it'll be that. We're also going to hear from Brian Schottenheimer,
- 3:20Speaker 1: the Cowboys head coach. We're going to hear from D'Amico Ryans,
- 3:24Speaker 1: the Texans head coach. We'll hear from Vic Schaefer, Texas
- 3:27Speaker 1: women's basketball coach. You heard a little bit from him
- 3:29Speaker 1: yesterday from Vic as they get ready toward the start
- 3:32Speaker 1: of a new season. They have two huge exhibition games.
- 3:37Speaker 1: And I know that sounds like, you know, terms that
- 3:44Speaker 1: are opposite of one another is what it sounds like.
- 3:46Speaker 2: An oxymoron.
- 3:47Speaker 1: Yeah, it does. It does because it's an exhibition game.
- 3:50Speaker 1: But they are playing UConn at UConn next Monday. And
- 3:54Speaker 1: then a week from Sunday, they have the defending national champions, UCLA,
- 3:58Speaker 1: in the area. I won't say in town, in Austin,
- 4:00Speaker 1: because they're going to play them at the HEB Center
- 4:02Speaker 1: in Cedar Park. But they'll be playing them there in
- 4:05Speaker 1: an exhibition game. So anyway, we'll hear from Vic Schaefer
- 4:08Speaker 1: as well. I want to start it off by hearing
- 4:10Speaker 1: from Longhorn. Connor Robertson, one of the anchors, along with
- 4:13Speaker 1: Trevor Goosby on that Texas offensive front that the last
- 4:18Speaker 1: couple of ballgames has had its struggles, especially in trying
- 4:20Speaker 1: to get the running game going and trying to, um,
- 4:26Speaker 1: make the offense more consistent and not have a collection
- 4:30Speaker 1: of three and outs like they've had the last couple
- 4:31Speaker 1: of ballgames. Robertson says, first of all, how is everybody
- 4:36Speaker 1: responding to the defeat? And is there a key to
- 4:39Speaker 1: being able to bounce back?
- 4:40Speaker 4: I think it's just all mentality, you know, it's just
- 4:42Speaker 4: all about next game. Um, can't let it, you know,
- 4:46Speaker 4: can't let it linger and hang around, win or lose,
- 4:49Speaker 4: you know?
- 4:50Speaker 1: Yeah. And, um, Here's one thing that's come up, and
- 4:56Speaker 1: when I have a recording of Longhorn Weekly with Coach
- 5:00Speaker 1: Sark tonight over on campus, which will air tomorrow night
- 5:04Speaker 1: at 7 o'clock here on The Zone, I'm sure we'll
- 5:08Speaker 1: make reference to what happened the last time Texas lost Oklahoma.
- 5:13Speaker 1: It's been three years. Last time Texas lost OU was 2023,
- 5:17Speaker 1: and all they did was win the rest of their
- 5:19Speaker 1: regular season games. and win the Big 12 championship game
- 5:25Speaker 1: and got to the college football playoff and into the
- 5:27Speaker 1: semifinals where they lost the tough one to Washington late.
- 5:32Speaker 1: So the players were kind of being asked about this,
- 5:34Speaker 1: at least the ones that have been around a while,
- 5:36Speaker 1: like Connor Robertson, a fifth-year guy, and asked if the
- 5:40Speaker 1: veterans are going to try to replicate the message from
- 5:43Speaker 1: what the team had in 2023 coming off the Oklahoma
- 5:47Speaker 1: loss this time around.
- 5:48Speaker 4: Yeah, I think so, man. I mean, I don't think
- 5:52Speaker 4: you can let one game define your season. And again,
- 5:55Speaker 4: win or lose, you can't let it affect the next game.
- 6:00Speaker 4: You got to come back on Monday ready to work
- 6:06Speaker 4: and ready for the opportunity and just keep doing that
- 6:09Speaker 4: as long as you can.
- 6:10Speaker 1: Yeah, and important to try to do that. And finally, yes,
- 6:14Speaker 1: the requisite Arch Manning question. The center asked, how's his
- 6:18Speaker 1: quarterback holding up?
- 6:19Speaker 4: I think Arch is doing a great job. like I said,
- 6:22Speaker 4: just coming back to practice today and ready for the
- 6:25Speaker 4: opportunity this week. And, you know, I think as a team,
- 6:27Speaker 4: that's kind of where we're at.
- 6:28Speaker 2: Okay.
- 6:29Speaker 1: So they'll, you know, back on the practice field and
- 6:32Speaker 1: trying to get ready for the Florida Gators, a Florida
- 6:34Speaker 1: team that looked outstanding after kind of running Ole Miss
- 6:39Speaker 1: off the field. And that was after Ole Miss had
- 6:43Speaker 1: beaten LSU. And then Florida turned around and got thumped
- 6:47Speaker 1: pretty good by what is– proving itself to be a
- 6:51Speaker 1: really good Missouri team. We're going to find out more
- 6:53Speaker 1: about Missouri this week. They played Ole Miss. And every week,
- 6:59Speaker 1: we can point to games in the SEC and say, hey,
- 7:02Speaker 1: that game could be big. Hey, that game could be...
- 7:04Speaker 1: Every week, you can do that. And that's one of
- 7:08Speaker 1: those games this week, in addition to Alabama and Tennessee.
- 7:11Speaker 1: But that one, I think, is going to have a
- 7:15Speaker 1: lot of folks' eyes on it because that's going to
- 7:17Speaker 1: be the are you a real contender in this conference
- 7:20Speaker 1: to try to reach the conference championship game or be
- 7:23Speaker 1: in contention for a spot in the playoff? Missouri Ole Miss,
- 7:28Speaker 1: I don't want to say it'll be an elimination game,
- 7:31Speaker 1: but the winner is going to be in a far
- 7:35Speaker 1: more advantageous position than the loser of that game. I agree.
- 7:38Speaker 3: Austin Simmons going up against his old school where Trinidad
- 7:41Speaker 3: Chambliss eventually Took over. Now he gets to face off
- 7:45Speaker 3: with his old teammates. So many amazing storylines in that game.
- 7:48Speaker 1: Yep. So that's on Saturday. And then, like you said,
- 7:53Speaker 1: the pundits. And you had a couple of folks on
- 7:55Speaker 1: yesterday who were evaluating what was going on with the Longhorns.
- 7:59Speaker 1: And most seem to say wouldn't exactly panic yet. This
- 8:06Speaker 1: team obviously still has probably the best one loss resume
- 8:13Speaker 1: of those with one. However, and I think this has
- 8:15Speaker 1: been a common thread. I think I've read it in
- 8:18Speaker 1: a variety of publications, The Athletic and SI and then
- 8:23Speaker 1: obviously ESPN and a couple of other ones as well,
- 8:27Speaker 1: that this team is far from being out of the
- 8:33Speaker 1: chase and the hunt and the running or whatever. for
- 8:36Speaker 1: college football playoff. But what it is at the moment
- 8:42Speaker 1: is one of a pack of teams in a middle
- 8:44Speaker 1: group that Georgia's number one and Alabama's probably number two.
- 8:50Speaker 1: And then beyond that, it's kind of take your pick
- 8:53Speaker 1: right now, whether you're talking about Texas or Ole Miss
- 8:56Speaker 1: or Missouri or LSU, whatever. There's other teams in there
- 9:03Speaker 1: and it's kind of in a in a middle world.
- 9:06Speaker 1: So we'll find out if the Longhorns can emerge from that.
- 9:09Speaker 1: They can take a step in that direction this Saturday
- 9:12Speaker 1: against Florida. 11 a.m.
- 9:14Speaker 4: Kick.
- 9:14Speaker 1: You can hear it here on 1300 The Zone. Our
- 9:17Speaker 1: coverage actually began four hours prior to kick with a
- 9:21Speaker 1: third and Longhorn preview from the podcast, guys. That's at 7.
- 9:26Speaker 1: At 8 o'clock is Longhorns game day down from Bevo Boulevard.
- 9:29Speaker 1: They're in the Winship area. So that'll be at 8 o'clock.
- 9:33Speaker 1: And then network pregame at 10, the kickoff at 11.
- 9:36Speaker 1: Texas against Florida. Florida trying to bounce back from the
- 9:39Speaker 1: two losses, not only to Missouri, but to South Carolina,
- 9:42Speaker 1: which I think surprised some folks. So there's that on
- 9:47Speaker 1: this side. And it's the first of three consecutive home games,
- 9:50Speaker 1: by the way. Second time this season, the Longhorns will
- 9:52Speaker 1: have three in a row at home. They had three
- 9:55Speaker 1: in a row at home to open the season. They'll
- 9:56Speaker 1: have three in a row at home here. with this
- 10:00Speaker 1: game followed by Ole Miss next week, and that's a 6.30 p.m. kickoff.
- 10:04Speaker 1: And then the Mississippi State game, which is either going
- 10:06Speaker 1: to be an afternoon or an evening kickoff for that.
- 10:08Speaker 1: They'll probably announce that next week. All right, up next,
- 10:10Speaker 1: we talk college and high school football in the Lone
- 10:13Speaker 1: Star State. We visit with Greg Tepper, editor-in-chief, Dave Campbell's
- 10:17Speaker 1: Texas Football Magazine, when we continue on 1300 The Zone.
- 10:21Speaker 1: Here on the Yacht Rock Wednesday on Sports Radio AM
- 10:25Speaker 1: 1300 The Zone. And, of course, normally, normally, we visit
- 10:32Speaker 1: with our next guest in the 3 o'clock hour on Tuesday.
- 10:36Speaker 1: But because we have to move some things around, our
- 10:40Speaker 1: man Greg Tepper, the editor-in-chief of Dave Campbell's Texas Football Magazine,
- 10:43Speaker 1: was kind enough to... uh, adjust along with us and tap.
- 10:49Speaker 1: I will tell you when you come off the weekend
- 10:51Speaker 1: that was had by the folks who cheer for the
- 10:53Speaker 1: team down in this town, adjustment and flexibility takes on
- 10:58Speaker 1: added meaning.
- 11:00Speaker 2: Okay. I gotta be honest.
- 11:02Speaker 5: Like, I don't want to, I don't want to be
- 11:03Speaker 5: that guy, but like run back the tape. What were
- 11:06Speaker 5: we talking about?
- 11:08Speaker 2: What were we.
- 11:09Speaker 6: Talking about with regards to Texas OU? When it seems
- 11:13Speaker 6: that there is one team that's very clear, one team's
- 11:16Speaker 6: in the dumps, one team is heading towards, people are
- 11:20Speaker 6: asking whether or not they've got the right coaching staff,
- 11:23Speaker 6: and the other team is flying high, everything's sunshine and daffodils,
- 11:26Speaker 6: what happens? That's what happens. This is one of those games.
- 11:30Speaker 6: So it's one of those things where I was listening
- 11:32Speaker 6: to your call, as I always was, and as Oklahoma
- 11:36Speaker 6: kind of just kept creeping back, all I was thinking
- 11:40Speaker 6: about was our conversation. I was thinking about, man, we
- 11:43Speaker 6: tried to tell people this is going to be one
- 11:45Speaker 6: of those games. It tends to be, and sure enough,
- 11:47Speaker 6: I know it didn't go the way of the home
- 11:49Speaker 6: team down there in Austin, but I will tell you,
- 11:52Speaker 6: as somebody who doesn't have a dog in the hunt,
- 11:54Speaker 6: it was a fun ballgame.
- 11:56Speaker 5: I know that's no solace to those folks, but it
- 12:00Speaker 5: was a heck of a ballgame.
- 12:01Speaker 1: Well, let me also say this, too. Two things. One,
- 12:07Speaker 1: it's never going to be sunshine and daffodils down here,
- 12:11Speaker 1: whether they win or lose, because there's always going to
- 12:14Speaker 1: be some of that. I always point out that actual
- 12:18Speaker 1: true story of right after they won the national championship
- 12:21Speaker 1: and I get on the elevator and I come down
- 12:23Speaker 1: after they've beaten USC in this incredible game and I
- 12:25Speaker 1: get on and I dial in to our local postgame
- 12:29Speaker 1: show here on The Zone. and they were taking calls
- 12:31Speaker 1: back then, an actual caller to the show said, hey,
- 12:33Speaker 1: I'm glad we won the championship and all, but we've
- 12:37Speaker 1: got to do something to fix this defense. We gave
- 12:38Speaker 1: up 38 points to USC. I mean, we have got
- 12:41Speaker 1: to do something about it. That convinced me that no
- 12:44Speaker 1: matter what happens, there will always be that out there. Now,
- 12:50Speaker 1: Having said all that, and I'm sure, you know, Mike Craven,
- 12:55Speaker 1: and by the way, in his mid-season superlatives piece there
- 12:59Speaker 1: for folks who haven't seen it on TexasFootball.com, if you
- 13:03Speaker 1: want to see that, I was a little bit surprised
- 13:07Speaker 1: that he didn't list the Texas-Oklahoma game as the worst loss.
- 13:15Speaker 1: He did give an honorable mention, right? But he gave
- 13:18Speaker 1: the worst loss thing to the Texas State-San Diego State game, which,
- 13:21Speaker 1: by the way, I was up for all of that,
- 13:23Speaker 1: so I can understand why he would do that as well.
- 13:27Speaker 6: Well, the other thing that I understand about that is
- 13:29Speaker 6: that for Texas fans, there's not going to be any
- 13:32Speaker 6: loss worse than losing to Oklahoma for reasons both on
- 13:36Speaker 6: the scoreboard and at the water cooler, right?
- 13:38Speaker 1: I get that.
- 13:39Speaker 6: And also, one of the things about that is the
- 13:42Speaker 6: Texas State loss to San Diego State was really surprising
- 13:49Speaker 6: for a lot of reasons, not the least of which...
- 13:52Speaker 6: San Diego State was without 10 starters in that game.
- 13:55Speaker 6: 10 because of, and this is true, the mumps. They
- 14:01Speaker 6: had a legit Oregon Trail disease going through their locker room.
- 14:07Speaker 5: And still they came up with Texas State.
- 14:10Speaker 6: Came up short and got outscored in the second half,
- 14:12Speaker 6: you would think that the team with the depth advantage
- 14:15Speaker 6: would have the advantage there. Look, it was a tough week,
- 14:18Speaker 6: I think, for Texas State, losing that game. But then
- 14:22Speaker 6: you add in, you know, it's been a tough couple
- 14:25Speaker 6: of weeks, I think.
- 14:26Speaker 2: Across the state of Texas. A lot of grumbling.
- 14:29Speaker 6: I think you've just kind of noticed an uptick in
- 14:32Speaker 6: grumbling in college football across the state of Texas. Whether
- 14:35Speaker 6: it's TCU, who's on the outs with Sonny Dyches, they're
- 14:39Speaker 6: ready to run him out of town, despite the fact
- 14:41Speaker 6: that he played in the national championship recently.
- 14:43Speaker 5: A & M, don't even get me started on what's
- 14:46Speaker 5: going on down at College Station.
- 14:47Speaker 1: I'm going to get you started on that in a moment,
- 14:49Speaker 1: but continue.
- 14:51Speaker 6: Yeah, I mean, it seems like nobody's happy. You know
- 14:54Speaker 6: what I mean? Nobody feels really good about their team.
- 14:57Speaker 2: Even Texas Tech.
- 14:58Speaker 5: Texas Tech's undefeated.
- 14:59Speaker 6: Texas Tech's the number one team in our power poll now,
- 15:01Speaker 6: now that Texas has fallen. And that's the team that
- 15:04Speaker 6: we think is best. And you talk with Tech fans,
- 15:06Speaker 6: and there's.
- 15:07Speaker 1: The wringing of hands.
- 15:08Speaker 5: Oh, man, we've got to figure some things out.
- 15:12Speaker 6: There's been an uptick in grumbling, I would say, overall
- 15:15Speaker 6: in the college football landscape.
- 15:19Speaker 1: And again, it's well-written. All of Mike's stuff is really good.
- 15:22Speaker 1: But if people go to TexasFootball.com, obviously you can get
- 15:26Speaker 1: the subscription there, get all the great content. and the
- 15:28Speaker 1: access to watching live high school games as well. He
- 15:31Speaker 1: lists my alma mater, North Texas, as the most surprising team.
- 15:36Speaker 1: It surprised me a little bit, but I would have
- 15:38Speaker 1: to say I was a little surprised, too, that with
- 15:41Speaker 1: the gutting of the roster of the Mean Green headed
- 15:45Speaker 1: to what my longtime friend of mine and a fellow
- 15:48Speaker 1: North Texas grad refers to, UNT Stillwater. is what he's
- 15:54Speaker 1: calling Oklahoma State now. What with Eric Morris up there
- 15:58Speaker 1: and Drew Mestemaker and all the rest of the guys
- 16:01Speaker 1: up there, for them to have to replace something like
- 16:03Speaker 1: 72 players there and bring in Neil Brown, they've done okay.
- 16:08Speaker 4: Yeah, I think so.
- 16:09Speaker 6: I think North Texas felt like a total unknown. We
- 16:13Speaker 6: didn't know what to expect because they were building this program,
- 16:16Speaker 6: this roster from scratch. And by the way, they should
- 16:18Speaker 6: probably get two awards considering how good the old North
- 16:21Speaker 6: Texas team is doing north of the Red River. I mean,
- 16:25Speaker 6: they've been fantastic themselves. And so I think, yeah, what
- 16:27Speaker 6: Neil Brown has been able to do to build this
- 16:30Speaker 6: team on the fly to figure out. And I think
- 16:33Speaker 6: one of the things that has been most impressive to
- 16:34Speaker 6: me is that they have found a way to win
- 16:38Speaker 6: tight games. They found a way to beat Tulsa in overtime.
- 16:45Speaker 6: They've been able to find ways to win games that
- 16:49Speaker 6: maybe I think teams– you talk about cohesion, right? You
- 16:53Speaker 6: talk about programs and teams that play together. Well, these
- 16:57Speaker 6: guys have all kind of gotten to know each other
- 16:59Speaker 6: over the last three months or so. And suddenly, this
- 17:02Speaker 6: is a team playing with a ton of cohesion, which
- 17:03Speaker 6: I think is a ton of credit to Neil Brown
- 17:05Speaker 6: and his staff and what they've been able to do
- 17:07Speaker 6: and build a culture kind of in short order. Yeah,
- 17:09Speaker 6: I think if you're a North Texas fan, you're one
- 17:12Speaker 6: of the rare exceptions here that feels really good about
- 17:15Speaker 6: where your football team's at.
- 17:16Speaker 1: You know, their best win might be the one over UNLV.
- 17:21Speaker 1: depending on what happens with UNLV the rest of the way.
- 17:24Speaker 1: We'll find out about that. Biggest underachiever is at Texas
- 17:28Speaker 1: A & M, and I don't think you'd get much
- 17:30Speaker 1: disagreement on that. And then, of course, that took backseat
- 17:37Speaker 1: to use of the word cesspool this week by Mike Elko,
- 17:42Speaker 1: who then kind of walked that back a bit afterwards.
- 17:44Speaker 1: But needless to say, I mean, it's unhappy times in
- 17:47Speaker 1: the Brazos Valley right now.
- 17:50Speaker 5: Man, I gotta tell you, it is.
- 17:52Speaker 6: That post-game press conference was perhaps even worse than the
- 17:57Speaker 6: way A & M played against Missouri. Missouri's my alma mater.
- 18:02Speaker 6: I think Missouri's a pretty decent team. I don't know
- 18:06Speaker 6: if they're a world-beater, but I don't think there's any
- 18:08Speaker 6: shame in going and losing to Missouri. But the way
- 18:11Speaker 6: that they lost, and the way that this offense has
- 18:14Speaker 6: completely imploded... I mean, Marcel Reed... I mean, we're getting
- 18:20Speaker 6: borderline unplayable out there. I mean, through three quarters, the
- 18:25Speaker 6: numbers will end up getting a little gussying up there
- 18:28Speaker 6: down the stretch because they had a nice drive kind
- 18:31Speaker 6: of in the fourth quarter that ended in a field goal.
- 18:33Speaker 6: But they had 60 yards of total offense after three quarters.
- 18:38Speaker 6: I mean, the offense was non-existent. And I think losing
- 18:43Speaker 6: Colin Klein is obviously rearing a tuggly head. And then
- 18:45Speaker 6: you go into the postgame press conference. and to more
- 18:48Speaker 6: or less take a run at your most... The people
- 18:53Speaker 6: who are probably most invested in this program, both emotionally
- 18:58Speaker 6: and financially, I thought it was... I mean, I understand
- 19:03Speaker 6: from Mike Elko's perspective, he's very frustrated. And obviously, I
- 19:08Speaker 6: think we all lash out whenever our emotions are high.
- 19:11Speaker 6: But man, to take a run at... at a group
- 19:14Speaker 6: of people who are, who live and breathe Texas A
- 19:19Speaker 6: & M football and Texas A & M athletics, just
- 19:21Speaker 6: really short-sighted and really misguided. And, and I'm, I'm positive
- 19:26Speaker 6: that somebody right after that said, you're going to walk
- 19:29Speaker 6: that back on Monday. And we're not asking that. I'm
- 19:33Speaker 6: sure Trev Alberts was in his, his, his office. He
- 19:37Speaker 6: got back from Columbia, Missouri.
- 19:38Speaker 1: Yeah, and I understand the point he's talking about, and
- 19:43Speaker 1: I've seen where other people have written about this as well,
- 19:45Speaker 1: because the toxicity of fan base. is everywhere, including right
- 19:52Speaker 1: here in this town. But it's everywhere, and a large
- 19:55Speaker 1: measure of them do post and comment on fan sites.
- 20:02Speaker 1: That's true. But there are also a lot of very loyal,
- 20:06Speaker 1: supportive fans, many of whom give of themselves financially as
- 20:10Speaker 1: well as of their emotions, that also follow and participate
- 20:15Speaker 1: on those fan sites. And you certainly don't want to
- 20:18Speaker 1: condemn those fans throwing the baby out with the bathwater
- 20:21Speaker 1: in a deal like that.
- 20:23Speaker 6: To me, he was trying to draw a point and
- 20:27Speaker 6: trying to draw a distinction between two different groups of saying,
- 20:32Speaker 6: we have the loyal fans, the people who are in
- 20:34Speaker 6: our corner, the people who have our back, the people
- 20:38Speaker 6: who want us to succeed, the people who are cheering
- 20:41Speaker 6: for us. They're at Kyle Field seven Saturdays a year
- 20:44Speaker 6: and stuff, and they are diehard for us. And then
- 20:47Speaker 6: you've got these online people who are going to say
- 20:51Speaker 6: whatever they one with no recourse and are too hard
- 20:55Speaker 6: on the program and don't understand and stuff like that.
- 20:58Speaker 6: He's trying to draw that distinction. Guys, it's the same bucket.
- 21:02Speaker 6: There's no distinction between that. That, I think, is where
- 21:05Speaker 6: he really went wrong, is that the people who are, yes,
- 21:09Speaker 6: they are going online and they are venting their frustrations,
- 21:12Speaker 6: and maybe they're unfair. Maybe they are unfair at times.
- 21:14Speaker 6: But those are also the people who love your university
- 21:18Speaker 6: more than anyone and will do anything for this university.
- 21:21Speaker 6: I just thought that that was a real misstep from
- 21:24Speaker 6: a guy who is, in our conversations and by all accounts,
- 21:28Speaker 6: is a really smart guy. But just a real misstep
- 21:32Speaker 6: to allow, I think, his emotions to take over and
- 21:35Speaker 6: to allow what I think is pretty clearly the frustrations
- 21:40Speaker 6: of things going south in a very quick way take
- 21:44Speaker 6: over and make some comments that he obviously wants back.
- 21:49Speaker 1: Let me ask you about two other teams in Texas,
- 21:50Speaker 1: then we'll move on to high school. Again, referring to
- 21:54Speaker 1: Mike Craven's piece today on TexasFootball.com. Team I'm buying stock in, Baylor.
- 22:00Speaker 1: Team I'm most concerned about, TCU. His thoughts on those
- 22:04Speaker 1: and your thoughts on those two.
- 22:06Speaker 6: Yeah, you know, Baylor, I think, has been, Baylor, the
- 22:09Speaker 6: real question for them was like, can DJ Lagway save
- 22:12Speaker 6: Dave Aranda's job?
- 22:13Speaker 2: Is more or less it.
- 22:15Speaker 6: Well, now, you know, look, I don't think that they're
- 22:20Speaker 6: necessarily ahead of schedule. If you take a look at
- 22:23Speaker 6: their schedule, it's very backloaded. The final three-game stretch where
- 22:27Speaker 6: they play BYU, Texas Tech, and Houston, I think, is
- 22:29Speaker 6: going to really tell the tale. But so far, look,
- 22:32Speaker 6: they're entering their open date at 4-1, and their one
- 22:35Speaker 6: loss on the year is by a point to Auburn
- 22:38Speaker 6: in Atlanta, which is essentially a road game, right?
- 22:42Speaker 5: Look, they have figured things out.
- 22:44Speaker 6: I think that they are better, especially defensively, than people
- 22:48Speaker 6: may have thought they were going to be. DJ Lagway,
- 22:51Speaker 6: it's been a roller coaster, but when he's good, he's
- 22:53Speaker 6: been good. Yeah, I think for Baylor, this is what
- 22:58Speaker 6: they were hoping it would be. This is what they
- 22:59Speaker 6: were hoping it would be in a lot of ways.
- 23:00Speaker 6: For TCU, look, the results just haven't been there. The
- 23:06Speaker 6: biggest thing for me about TCU is that they cannot
- 23:09Speaker 6: run the ball.
- 23:11Speaker 1: At all.
- 23:11Speaker 5: And that is really holding them back.
- 23:15Speaker 6: I think the defense has actually been okay. But, you know, look,
- 23:20Speaker 6: when you are able to, their defense has given their
- 23:22Speaker 6: offense the ball in situations to go down and win
- 23:25Speaker 6: the game, and they just simply haven't been able to
- 23:26Speaker 6: do it.
- 23:27Speaker 1: Right.
- 23:28Speaker 5: That I think is, is the biggest thing.
- 23:30Speaker 6: And now for TCU and for Sonny Dykes, they've got
- 23:34Speaker 6: to be looking, you know, they're, they're going off on
- 23:36Speaker 6: the road to Baylor to take on a team that
- 23:40Speaker 6: we just talked about that is playing pretty well.
- 23:42Speaker 2: And if you, I mean, I don't need to tell
- 23:44Speaker 2: people this.
- 23:45Speaker 5: If you're a TCU fan, that's the game you.
- 23:47Speaker 1: Got to win.
- 23:47Speaker 2: You got to be Baylor.
- 23:48Speaker 6: And, and that, if you want to, you want to
- 23:50Speaker 6: talk about a real turn game and, and a game
- 23:53Speaker 6: that is really going to go a long way towards, um,
- 23:56Speaker 6: um towards determining the fate of both of those coaches
- 23:59Speaker 6: we used to call it an anxiety bowl uh it
- 24:02Speaker 6: is a real anxiety bowl in waco because if baylor
- 24:04Speaker 6: can get the win they can really start making things
- 24:07Speaker 6: uncomfortable and.
- 24:08Speaker 1: Forward greg tapper editor-in-chief dave campbell's texas football magazine will
- 24:12Speaker 1: shift to high school i'll ask you a similar mid-season
- 24:15Speaker 1: eval question overall if if you were just to pluck
- 24:20Speaker 1: one from the sky what team has surprised you the
- 24:23Speaker 1: most any classification.
- 24:24Speaker 6: Jeez Jeez, there's a handful of them. There's a number
- 24:28Speaker 6: of teams that I think have really, I think overall
- 24:33Speaker 6: have surprised me, not necessarily because we didn't think they
- 24:37Speaker 6: were going to be good, but maybe not this good.
- 24:39Speaker 5: I'll tell you one of them is the new number
- 24:40Speaker 5: one team in 6A is North Crowley. North Crowley's team
- 24:43Speaker 5: we thought was going to be good, right?
- 24:44Speaker 6: We thought they were going to be pretty good, but
- 24:46Speaker 6: new coach and a lot of new pieces there, but
- 24:49Speaker 6: they have absolutely positively figured it out and things are
- 24:52Speaker 6: looking very, very good for them. I think another team,
- 24:55Speaker 6: and again, we thought they were going to be good,
- 24:56Speaker 6: but I think they've exceeded my expectations, is Richmond Randall.
- 24:59Speaker 6: Moving up to 5A Division I, that's a team that
- 25:01Speaker 6: we thought, okay, there's going to be some growing pains.
- 25:03Speaker 5: What are they going to do outside of having Landon Williams-Kallis? Well,
- 25:06Speaker 5: they've figured it out.
- 25:08Speaker 6: I still have questions about what happens when somebody's able
- 25:10Speaker 6: to bottle up Landon Williams-Kallis, but that is a question
- 25:13Speaker 6: for another day. Still more things to learn about them.
- 25:15Speaker 6: But there's actually one more team in their own district
- 25:18Speaker 6: that I think is really interesting, and it's Friendswood. Friendswood
- 25:21Speaker 6: is off to an undefeated start and has been one
- 25:24Speaker 6: of the real surprises, I think, in Texas high school football.
- 25:27Speaker 5: What they've been able to do, especially offensively, has been impressive.
- 25:30Speaker 6: And then I'll give one more, and this is way
- 25:32Speaker 6: off the beaten path, and I'm not here to tell
- 25:34Speaker 6: you that this is a state championship contender, but we
- 25:36Speaker 6: always love great stories in Texas high school football. Fort
- 25:39Speaker 6: Worth Wyatt is one of the best stories in Texas
- 25:43Speaker 6: high school football.
- 25:44Speaker 5: This is a.
- 25:44Speaker 6: Program that, you know, look, has had times when they've
- 25:48Speaker 6: been okay. But this year, they are undefeated. What they've
- 25:53Speaker 6: been able to do under their coach, let's see, it's
- 25:57Speaker 6: Zach Chris now.
- 25:58Speaker 1: Yeah, Willie's son.
- 25:59Speaker 6: Yeah. They're 6-0 for the first time in program history.
- 26:05Speaker 6: They've got a game this week against South Hills. I
- 26:07Speaker 6: believe that's actually, that might be tonight. That might be
- 26:10Speaker 6: a Wednesday night affair because they're playing some games on
- 26:12Speaker 6: Wednesdays there in Fort Worth ISD. What Zachary Chris has
- 26:16Speaker 6: done there is something that his dad, Willie, never did,
- 26:19Speaker 6: and his brother, Anthony, never did.
- 26:20Speaker 2: Remember, a Chris family member.
- 26:22Speaker 6: Has been the head coach there almost consecutively since 1984.
- 26:27Speaker 6: What Coach Zachary Chris has done is really, really impressive.
- 26:31Speaker 6: And again, I'm not here to tell you I think
- 26:33Speaker 6: the Chaparrals are winning a state championship. That is, I think,
- 26:35Speaker 6: one of the great surprises in Texas high school football.
- 26:38Speaker 1: Yeah, no doubt about it. Have I not looked at
- 26:42Speaker 1: it properly? Or is this week in 6A a... How's
- 26:48Speaker 1: the best way to describe this?
- 26:49Speaker 7: Boom!
- 26:50Speaker 1: Week?
- 26:50Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 26:52Speaker 2: It is a real....
- 26:55Speaker 6: Here's the way I would describe it. It's a real
- 26:57Speaker 6: sicko week, okay? This is not a week for the casuals, okay?
- 27:01Speaker 6: This is a week where there's still a fair number
- 27:03Speaker 6: of open dates out there, and it's just the schedule
- 27:06Speaker 6: lines up where it's not great at the big school level.
- 27:09Speaker 5: It's not spectacular.
- 27:11Speaker 1: I will say this.
- 27:13Speaker 5: At the small school level, it's dynamite.
- 27:16Speaker 2: It is dynamite.
- 27:17Speaker 6: So really good level game year or week in 3A,
- 27:21Speaker 6: in 2A, in 4A. We've got a 3A game on
- 27:24Speaker 6: our broadcast. We're going out to Cedar Creek Lake to
- 27:26Speaker 6: do Malakoff and Winsboro, which is a top five matchup
- 27:29Speaker 6: of unbeatens. If you're into that kind of thing, this
- 27:32Speaker 6: is an off-the-beaten-path type because you're right.
- 27:34Speaker 5: The best big school games are like.
- 27:37Speaker 6: Cedar Park, who looks fantastic, taking on Vandegrift, who's a
- 27:39Speaker 6: team that we, you know, there's a lot of storylines there,
- 27:42Speaker 6: and I'm super interested in it. But as far as
- 27:45Speaker 6: Vandegrift's unranked at the moment, things like Barbers Hill Dickinson
- 27:49Speaker 6: is a good game. Abilene Amarillo, from the big school level,
- 27:54Speaker 6: it's an off week. Wait till next week, though. Next week,
- 27:58Speaker 6: we get the whole Botana platter. No doubt about it. Okay,
- 28:01Speaker 6: time for the meanest thing we do each week.
- 28:03Speaker 1: I give you three games, and you pick out which
- 28:07Speaker 1: one that you would transport to it were you not
- 28:10Speaker 1: calling the tremendous game you have. Okay, I give you
- 28:14Speaker 1: a choice between, and you just mentioned a few moments ago,
- 28:16Speaker 1: and it really touched my heart in an old sentimental way.
- 28:20Speaker 1: Amarillo High at Abilene, two old school, original high schools there.
- 28:27Speaker 1: So that one in the big country. Also, Bernie at
- 28:33Speaker 1: Liberty Hill. Now, I was going to go with Lindale
- 28:38Speaker 1: at Pine Tree, but then I thought I'll keep my
- 28:41Speaker 1: 4AD1 powder drive because next week we could have unbeaten
- 28:44Speaker 1: Stephenville at unbeaten Gerald. That could happen next week. And
- 28:48Speaker 1: then the other one, since you're talking about small school, especially,
- 28:52Speaker 1: Ganado Shiner.
- 28:56Speaker 6: Yeah, look, Amarillo and Abilene's going to be just a
- 28:58Speaker 6: ton of fun there. Shotwell's going to be rocking. And
- 29:01Speaker 6: Abilene's got a real good crew. And that's a huge
- 29:04Speaker 6: game in District 2, 5A, and D1. That game is
- 29:07Speaker 6: absolutely fascinating to me. The answer for me, though, is
- 29:11Speaker 6: going to be Shiner Ganado.
- 29:15Speaker 5: This is a top 10 matchup in.
- 29:17Speaker 2: 2A Division 1.
- 29:18Speaker 6: It's a game that I think lost a little bit
- 29:19Speaker 6: of luster because Ganado lost a couple games in the
- 29:21Speaker 6: middle of it. But one thing I think is fascinating
- 29:23Speaker 6: about Ganado is I think their quarterback got nicked up
- 29:27Speaker 6: at one point. And so they had to turn to
- 29:28Speaker 6: a freshman quarterback, Kyle Stancic. Well, the quarterback, Landon Arriaga,
- 29:32Speaker 6: is back, but the freshman's been so good that they've
- 29:35Speaker 6: kept him in there. And so that, I think, is fascinating.
- 29:39Speaker 6: Shiner's defense has been absolutely electric. The number four scoring
- 29:43Speaker 6: defense in all of Texas high school football at any level.
- 29:46Speaker 5: That game is fantastic.
- 29:47Speaker 6: I think Kaneto Shiner goes a long way towards determining
- 29:50Speaker 6: what a two-way Division I state championship game may look like.
- 29:53Speaker 5: I'll throw one more out there. You didn't mention it.
- 29:56Speaker 5: I'm kind of glad.
- 29:57Speaker 1: Okay.
- 29:58Speaker 6: Bay City and El Campo played at Riceburg Stadium. It
- 30:03Speaker 6: is the longest continuous rivalry in Texas high school football.
- 30:07Speaker 5: They are playing for the 107th consecutive year. And both state-ranked.
- 30:15Speaker 5: Both like it's going to be a zoo.
- 30:18Speaker 2: In El Campo.
- 30:18Speaker 6: It's going to be a ton of fun. That is
- 30:22Speaker 6: Texas OU in high school football. It is an absolute
- 30:27Speaker 6: knockdown drag out. That's going to be a ton of fun.
- 30:29Speaker 6: I'm actually glad you didn't give it to me.
- 30:31Speaker 1: Yeah, and there were two other honorable mentions I wanted
- 30:34Speaker 1: to throw out there. One, Bushland at Shallow Water. uh
- 30:38Speaker 1: rodney vixen's done a marvelous job at shallow water since
- 30:41Speaker 1: leaving vista ridge and went out there and he's done
- 30:43Speaker 1: that uh that was one of them and then just
- 30:46Speaker 1: because we're always looking for a reason to go to
- 30:48Speaker 1: mary's cafe and strawn you got strawn and union hill right.
- 30:52Speaker 6: Five so so it is a it is a massive
- 30:56Speaker 6: if you think it's if you think it's been in
- 30:58Speaker 6: the in the six man or in the the six
- 31:00Speaker 6: a ranks go look at one a one a this
- 31:02Speaker 6: is the big open date which makes the kind of sense.
- 31:04Speaker 6: You want the open date right before you go into
- 31:06Speaker 6: district play, a ton of four-team districts, real thin and six-man.
- 31:09Speaker 6: But you get Union Hill, the number one team in
- 31:13Speaker 6: 1A Division I, taking on, or taking on, yeah, 1A Division, yeah,
- 31:18Speaker 6: 1A Division I, taking on Strawn, a team that is
- 31:21Speaker 6: no stranger to playing in big games, state-ranked team in
- 31:24Speaker 6: 1A Division II. That's a whale of a ballgame, not
- 31:27Speaker 6: the least of which is a reason you can go
- 31:28Speaker 6: get some good chicken fry.
- 31:30Speaker 1: Absolutely. And even Paducah Valley's pretty good. Because that way
- 31:35Speaker 1: you can say I've been to Kitty Quay if you've
- 31:37Speaker 1: done that, you know?
- 31:38Speaker 2: I have not, no.
- 31:42Speaker 1: That's where Valley is. They say Turkey Valley, but it's
- 31:44Speaker 1: actually in Kitty Quay for folks.
- 31:47Speaker 5: You know what, Craig? I mean this sincerely.
- 31:49Speaker 2: I learn something every time we do this. Okay.
- 31:52Speaker 1: All right. Hey, Jeff, thanks. Have a great call this week.
- 31:55Speaker 1: We'll look forward to it next week.
- 31:56Speaker 2: All right. Talk soon.
- 31:58Speaker 1: All right. That's Greg Jefford, Editor-in-Chief. Dave Campbell's Texas Football Magazine.
- 32:03Speaker 1: By the way, Kitty Quay is spelled Q-U-I-T-A-Q-U-E. It looks
- 32:09Speaker 1: like Quiddikue, but it's pronounced Kitty Quay. In fact, they
- 32:12Speaker 1: even put it on their sign, their speed limit sign, Alfred,
- 32:16Speaker 1: or they're welcome to. They phonetically put it K-I-T-T-Y hyphen K-W-A-Y,
- 32:24Speaker 1: Kitty Quay.
- 32:24Speaker 2: Unbelievable. Town of 342.
- 32:28Speaker 1: Home of the Valley Patriots there. All right, we have
- 32:31Speaker 1: more coming up. Inconceivable next on 13 Under the Zone.
- 32:35Speaker 2: One, bouncing ball.
- 32:38Speaker 8: Walls makes the play.
- 32:41Speaker 6: Brian Baker closes it down.
- 32:45Speaker 1: And the Tampa Bay Rays take game two of this ALCS.
- 32:51Speaker 1: This series is all tied at one apiece. Yeah, that
- 33:00Speaker 1: was game two last night. Our friend and Georgetown native
- 33:04Speaker 1: Brian Anderson on the call for TBS as the Tampa
- 33:08Speaker 1: Bay Rays even up their series in the ALCS with
- 33:12Speaker 1: the Cleveland Guardians in a game of peace. By the way,
- 33:14Speaker 1: just apropos of very little, but on my mind, since
- 33:20Speaker 1: I said Rays, I don't know about you, But I
- 33:24Speaker 1: really enjoyed the throwback uniforms. They were sporting last night.
- 33:29Speaker 1: Devil Rays on the jersey with the Stingray hat. I
- 33:32Speaker 1: bought one of those Stingray hats right after they came
- 33:35Speaker 1: online in 1998 when the team did. I bought it
- 33:38Speaker 1: for my son because he really liked it. So, and,
- 33:43Speaker 1: you know, they were the Devil Rays from 98 through
- 33:46Speaker 1: like 06 or 07, right in there. I think in
- 33:50Speaker 1: 07 is when they changed over and they just dropped
- 33:52Speaker 1: it and just went with Rays. I had somebody text
- 33:55Speaker 1: me last night. What exactly is a Ray? I said, well,
- 33:57Speaker 1: it's short for like a Stingray, a Manta Ray, a
- 34:00Speaker 1: Devil Ray. And they have several lawyers in that tank.
- 34:03Speaker 1: They're beyond the right field fence. They're a Tropicana field.
- 34:05Speaker 1: They're kind of cool, really, to look at. They've never
- 34:08Speaker 1: won a World Series. The Milwaukee Brewers have never won
- 34:11Speaker 1: a World Series. Tampa Bay's been twice. Milwaukee's been once.
- 34:19Speaker 1: Neither have ever won one. I'd say there's a real
- 34:21Speaker 1: good chance both are going to wind up in the
- 34:23Speaker 1: World Series and that we're going to have a first-time
- 34:25Speaker 1: world champion this year. Wow.
- 34:26Speaker 3: And the Dodgers, obviously, are going to be backs up
- 34:28Speaker 3: against the wall tonight, relying on Blake Snell to try
- 34:31Speaker 3: and make that a series. You can never count the
- 34:34Speaker 3: two-time champs out.
- 34:36Speaker 1: They're going to have to have a better performance from
- 34:37Speaker 1: Snell than what he did against Atlanta. if they're going
- 34:40Speaker 1: to bounce back. And they're going to have to find
- 34:41Speaker 1: a way to hit. They are not hitting. They're just
- 34:43Speaker 1: not hitting with runners in scoring position. They haven't been
- 34:45Speaker 1: hitting throughout the postseason. They're going to keep Shohei Ohtani
- 34:50Speaker 1: in the lineup. I'm not necessarily against that. I just,
- 34:52Speaker 1: you know, I know it's very noteworthy. I think the
- 34:56Speaker 1: esteemed Tim Kirchhen said, you have to do that. You're
- 35:00Speaker 1: going to tell me there's nine guys on your team
- 35:03Speaker 1: that are better hitters than him, even though he's been
- 35:06Speaker 1: in a bad way of late and has been banged up? So,
- 35:10Speaker 1: He's going to be in the lineup tonight. I don't
- 35:11Speaker 1: know where they'll bat him. They've tried him. Of course,
- 35:14Speaker 1: most of the season, he didn't lead off until he
- 35:15Speaker 1: got hurt. Then when Mookie Betts came back, he was second.
- 35:18Speaker 1: Then it was fourth and fifth. So we'll see where
- 35:22Speaker 1: he is. The lineups I don't think have been posted
- 35:24Speaker 1: yet because the game is not until 7 o'clock. But
- 35:27Speaker 1: they may be posted pretty soon here during this hour.
- 35:30Speaker 1: All right. Coming up in a few minutes, we will
- 35:33Speaker 1: talk Florida Gators with Sean Kelly, play-by-play voice of the Gators.
- 35:39Speaker 1: get his thoughts on this Florida team coming in on that.
- 35:42Speaker 1: Let's shift over to some pro football. Dallas Cowboys announcing
- 35:50Speaker 1: Mike Pettin to the staff. It was Brian Schottenheimer who
- 35:52Speaker 1: made the announcement yesterday.
- 35:54Speaker 7: Excited to announce we've added a new member to our
- 35:57Speaker 7: defensive staff, senior defensive assistant Mike Pettin. Had a chance
- 36:03Speaker 7: to work with Pettin for a number of years along
- 36:05Speaker 7: with the Jets, and he's going to be here in
- 36:10Speaker 7: a role to support everything that CP is leading and
- 36:15Speaker 7: guiding and really, really excited. They work together in Green Bay,
- 36:19Speaker 7: and this is actually something that CP and I talked
- 36:21Speaker 7: about when we first hired him.
- 36:24Speaker 1: We actually had two names.
- 36:25Speaker 7: I'm not going to tell you the names that we
- 36:28Speaker 7: talked to in the beginning, but those did not work
- 36:32Speaker 7: out for different reasons, so we weren't going to just
- 36:35Speaker 7: add someone that didn't make sense. I think pet's experience,
- 36:38Speaker 7: not only in football, but, uh, his experience in this
- 36:42Speaker 7: system of what we do is understanding of, um.
- 36:47Speaker 1: The three, four family.
- 36:48Speaker 7: He has the awareness of some of our players, Kenny Clark,
- 36:52Speaker 7: Rashawn Gary. Uh, you know, he was the coordinator when
- 36:56Speaker 7: CP was there. So I think it's just a, a
- 36:58Speaker 7: great fit and a guy that certainly brings a bunch
- 37:00Speaker 7: of experience to the entire staff, myself included. And, um,
- 37:04Speaker 7: If you think about it, you know, we have someone
- 37:06Speaker 7: like that on the offensive side with Ken Dorsey. And
- 37:09Speaker 7: so very excited to having Pat join us.
- 37:13Speaker 2: Okay.
- 37:13Speaker 1: So you can imagine first question coming out after, why
- 37:16Speaker 1: make this move now?
- 37:17Speaker 7: I think, again, it's something we've been talking about for
- 37:19Speaker 7: a long time. I think as we looked at everything,
- 37:22Speaker 7: you know, we had a chance to convince Pat that
- 37:25Speaker 7: it made sense for him. I think he's excited about
- 37:29Speaker 7: coming in and adding experience and value. And like I said,
- 37:33Speaker 7: the most important thing for us was making sure we
- 37:36Speaker 7: got the right guy.
- 37:37Speaker 1: And I feel very, very confident that we did. Okay,
- 37:39Speaker 1: to D'Amico Ryans, the excitement that he has for adding
- 37:43Speaker 1: Marvin Harrison Jr. to the roster.
- 37:45Speaker 8: We're excited to add Marvin to our team. He's another,
- 37:47Speaker 8: I think, really great playmaker. He's crushed a lot of
- 37:52Speaker 8: college records. He's got multiple thousand yards, receiving. seasons in
- 37:56Speaker 8: college all-american always been a top receiver when he's been
- 38:00Speaker 8: on the field yeah it's good rapport with cj from
- 38:03Speaker 8: their time at ohio state so we're excited to get
- 38:05Speaker 8: him in add another great player to our.
- 38:07Speaker 1: Group all right how will uh the familiarity that harrison
- 38:10Speaker 1: has with stroud help the transition for marvin harrison jr i.
- 38:14Speaker 8: Hope so i hope so i think anytime you have
- 38:17Speaker 8: players who Spend time together as college or other teams
- 38:21Speaker 8: is having that prior relationship definitely helps when you come
- 38:24Speaker 8: into a new situation.
- 38:26Speaker 7: All right.
- 38:26Speaker 1: So there it is. We'll hear more from those two
- 38:28Speaker 1: guys a little later on. Up next, we talk about
- 38:30Speaker 1: the Florida Gators, the opposing team for the Texas Longhorns
- 38:34Speaker 1: this Saturday in Austin. And Sean Kelly, play-by-play voice of
- 38:38Speaker 1: the Gators, joins us next on 13 Under the Zone.
- 38:42Speaker 4: A lovely day.
- 38:43Speaker 2: We're going to tune in.
- 38:46Speaker 1: On a yacht rock Wednesday here on Sports Radio AM 1300,
- 38:49Speaker 1: as I have a feeling that producer Jake Herman is
- 38:51Speaker 1: bouncing back. with Bill Withers Standard. Lovely day just to
- 38:55Speaker 1: make me and Sean Kelly feel better about life. Sean,
- 38:58Speaker 1: of course, the outstanding play-by-play voice of the Florida Gators.
- 39:01Speaker 1: He joins us now. You know, and thank you for
- 39:04Speaker 1: doing this. I can't help but be struck by some
- 39:08Speaker 1: mirrored similarities of the Gators and the Longhorns. Both got
- 39:13Speaker 1: gigantic top 10 ranked home wins. Both had been on
- 39:19Speaker 1: a roll and then both kind of Hit the wall
- 39:22Speaker 1: one game for the Longhorns, two for the Gators, and
- 39:25Speaker 1: both have had some injury issues as well. But I
- 39:27Speaker 1: know you probably have some more context than what I
- 39:29Speaker 1: just said. laid out there but uh how about your
- 39:32Speaker 1: thoughts on uh you know your ball club on the
- 39:35Speaker 1: Gators getting getting to this point after such a great
- 39:37Speaker 1: start and then having the back-to-back difficult weeks yeah it's
- 39:41Speaker 1: can you hear me okay oh loud and clear absolutely
- 39:45Speaker 1: It's been interesting, and not just parallels between this season,
- 39:48Speaker 1: but as we get ready for Saturday's game, parallels between
- 39:51Speaker 1: when these two teams met a year ago.
- 39:54Speaker 2: Interesting, like, you know, Texas was top 10 at the time.
- 39:57Speaker 2: Florida was unranked. And both teams kind of felt the
- 40:02Speaker 2: same way in the sense that I think Texas and
- 40:06Speaker 2: Florida are both in this position. They can beat anybody
- 40:08Speaker 2: in the country. Florida, maybe more so than Texas, can
- 40:12Speaker 2: probably lose to any team in the country. And that's
- 40:14Speaker 2: kind of where things stand midway through this first year
- 40:17Speaker 2: under John Summerall. And, you know, red hot start. And
- 40:20Speaker 2: then these last two weeks, just kind of like shock
- 40:23Speaker 2: and awe, but in a bad way for Gators fans
- 40:26Speaker 2: because of what they witnessed the first four weeks.
- 40:29Speaker 1: Craig, it's interesting.
- 40:30Speaker 2: I've been trying to get through some of that Nick
- 40:32Speaker 2: Saban documentary that's come out from our friends at ESPN.
- 40:37Speaker 2: And you look at Saban's first year at Alabama, and
- 40:40Speaker 2: there are eerie parallels to what John Summerall's got going
- 40:44Speaker 2: on at Florida. Hot start that year for Alabama, yet
- 40:49Speaker 2: they found a way to lose to Louisiana Monroe, right?
- 40:52Speaker 2: And then the roller coaster ride kept going, and then
- 40:54Speaker 2: they end up having a winning season, and we know
- 40:56Speaker 2: the rest of the story. I'm not saying that Alabama
- 40:59Speaker 2: year one was the same as Florida, but in watching
- 41:02Speaker 2: that documentary, there are parallels there. And the other thing
- 41:05Speaker 2: about the process here, to use their phrase, is that
- 41:10Speaker 2: it's always that tricky first year. Sark had it, what, six,
- 41:13Speaker 2: seven years ago now to where he's... trying to get
- 41:16Speaker 2: a culture in place and he's inherited a bunch of
- 41:19Speaker 2: guys and he's also brought in some new fresh faces.
- 41:24Speaker 2: And so chemistry wise, buy-in wise, all those things seem
- 41:28Speaker 2: to be good for the Gators. And they had to
- 41:31Speaker 2: try and learn a little bit about how to play
- 41:33Speaker 2: with success. Now they're trying to figure out how to
- 41:36Speaker 2: play when it's not so much fun. And line of
- 41:40Speaker 2: scrimmage seems to be a big pivot point with this
- 41:42Speaker 2: ball club. the thing Craig that shocked me more than
- 41:45Speaker 2: anything else at Missouri and maybe even a little bit
- 41:48Speaker 2: at home last week was that Florida would take the
- 41:51Speaker 2: fight to their opponent in the first month of the season.
- 41:55Speaker 2: And they got the fight kind of pushed back on
- 41:57Speaker 2: them these last two weeks. And then you combine that
- 42:00Speaker 2: with some bad mistakes at really bad times. And that's,
- 42:05Speaker 2: what's led to now a four and two record and
- 42:08Speaker 2: go from the darlings of college football through the first
- 42:11Speaker 2: month to now, you know, Are they a fraud? You know,
- 42:15Speaker 2: how real are they? I think you and I both
- 42:18Speaker 2: know that in this conference right now, and this is
- 42:20Speaker 2: the fun part about broadcasting this conference, if you like
- 42:24Speaker 2: to gamble on college football and SEC football, you got
- 42:26Speaker 2: to have a screw loose. I mean, come on. That's
- 42:30Speaker 2: what we're looking at kind of like as I look
- 42:31Speaker 2: at Saturday's game.
- 42:34Speaker 1: No doubt about it. It's been almost two months to
- 42:37Speaker 1: the day when I had you on when we were
- 42:40Speaker 1: doing a preview, doing SEC previews. And I remember asking
- 42:43Speaker 1: you back then a couple of questions. One, what was
- 42:46Speaker 1: the vibe like around? with John Summerall there. And you
- 42:49Speaker 1: said it's early days yet, but it was really upbeat
- 42:52Speaker 1: and positive, and guys were really excited about it. And
- 42:54Speaker 1: then you said what I think you just referred to.
- 42:57Speaker 1: You said the success or lack of with this football
- 43:00Speaker 1: team is going to be directly proportional to how interior
- 43:04Speaker 1: line plays. play is. Offensive line, defensive line. I think
- 43:08Speaker 1: we knew Jaden Ball was going to be really, really
- 43:10Speaker 1: good and he clearly is. And we knew there would
- 43:13Speaker 1: be questions and we'll get to Philo and the quarterback
- 43:16Speaker 1: situation and all that in a minute. But I remember
- 43:19Speaker 1: distinctly you talking about especially on the defensive side, also
- 43:23Speaker 1: on the offensive line, but I remember on the defensive
- 43:25Speaker 1: line you were talking about how crucial this was going
- 43:28Speaker 1: to be. What's been your review on what you've seen?
- 43:30Speaker 1: You made kind of a reference to it there a
- 43:32Speaker 1: moment ago, but overall in the interior line play.
- 43:35Speaker 2: Yeah, let's start offensively here first. This is kind of
- 43:38Speaker 2: interesting here. First four games, opponents were pressuring Gators offensive
- 43:43Speaker 2: line 22% of snaps. And in four games, he allowed
- 43:47Speaker 2: two sacks.
- 43:47Speaker 1: That's it.
- 43:48Speaker 2: They seemingly had opened the door for Jaden Ball. But
- 43:51Speaker 2: I think that all of us, if you go back
- 43:53Speaker 2: and you really start to pick apart Jaden Ball's runs,
- 43:57Speaker 2: Ball's the kind of running back that can do well,
- 44:00Speaker 2: even though maybe he's not getting great help up front.
- 44:03Speaker 2: He can mask some things with the way that he runs.
- 44:06Speaker 2: Sure enough, last two games against Missouri State, And South Carolina,
- 44:11Speaker 2: that pressure, pass pro pressure was up to 32%. And
- 44:16Speaker 2: they've allowed six sacks in the last two games. So
- 44:19Speaker 2: the approach by their opponent has changed. And maybe it's
- 44:22Speaker 2: exposed a little bit here on an offensive line that, again,
- 44:26Speaker 2: like I told you a month ago, had some question marks.
- 44:29Speaker 2: We'll see how that goes. But, again, they continue to
- 44:32Speaker 2: stay healthy, knock on wood. And they've shown that they
- 44:36Speaker 2: can get the job done, but they've also– you know,
- 44:38Speaker 2: put Aaron Philo and Jaden Ball into a trick box
- 44:41Speaker 2: a little bit on having to change the balance of
- 44:45Speaker 2: the Gators offense. The interior of the Gators defensive line,
- 44:50Speaker 2: I think, has been okay. And their edge guys keep
- 44:53Speaker 2: getting better, specifically Jaden Woods, who in conference play alone
- 44:57Speaker 2: has kind of cranked things up a little bit. SEC
- 45:00Speaker 2: games this year, six and a half Tackles for loss,
- 45:03Speaker 2: four sacks, a forced fumble, and three quarterback hurries. So
- 45:07Speaker 2: the freak show that we all thought and hoped that
- 45:09Speaker 2: Jaden Woods would be is starting to come now over
- 45:12Speaker 2: these last, what, three, four conference games. Then they had
- 45:15Speaker 2: this kind of rotating door on the other side. And
- 45:17Speaker 2: our good friend and the guy that you love, Oye Badajo,
- 45:21Speaker 2: has flashed, certainly, has moved himself really into being kind
- 45:25Speaker 2: of the starting opposite edge of Woods, but yet Cam
- 45:29Speaker 2: James has flashed. Cam doesn't play last week, strangely enough.
- 45:33Speaker 2: LJ McCray, who was poised to kind of have that
- 45:37Speaker 2: get-right season, there's something missing there, and I can't get
- 45:41Speaker 2: my fingers on the pulse of that. And maybe we'll
- 45:44Speaker 2: know a little bit more here during these next two games.
- 45:46Speaker 2: But they've stopped the run, Craig, with no problem. Even
- 45:51Speaker 2: against a South Carolina team that was leading the conference
- 45:54Speaker 2: in rushing, going into last weekend. But there are the
- 45:58Speaker 2: occasional chunk plays, and this inability right now for the
- 46:02Speaker 2: Gators the last two games to get off the field
- 46:05Speaker 2: on key third downs has been a monster problem for Florida.
- 46:09Speaker 1: Interesting enough. Visiting with Sean Kelly, play-by-play voice of the
- 46:12Speaker 1: Gators here on 13 Under the Sun. I think this
- 46:14Speaker 1: is the first time. Now, this is Texas' third year
- 46:17Speaker 1: in the SEC. So it's their third year of... complying
- 46:23Speaker 1: with and being a part of the SEC student athlete
- 46:27Speaker 1: availability report. That said, and the reason why I bring
- 46:29Speaker 1: this up is, I think this is the first time
- 46:33Speaker 1: that I have ever seen a player listed before the
- 46:39Speaker 1: first student athlete availability report other than season ending injury.
- 46:43Speaker 1: And I read Pete Thamel's take that Aaron Filo's listed
- 46:48Speaker 1: as questionable. And the first one's coming out tonight, and
- 46:50Speaker 1: maybe Aaron will be listed as questionable on that. What
- 46:53Speaker 1: do you make of that and what you know about
- 46:56Speaker 1: his shoulder and the situation with Filo?
- 46:59Speaker 2: It's certainly a question mark, obviously, now that it's come
- 47:04Speaker 2: out today that Aaron got banged up last week. And
- 47:08Speaker 2: I think what was mysterious for those that cover the
- 47:11Speaker 2: Gators and now for their fan base is.
- 47:13Speaker 1: What happened?
- 47:14Speaker 2: Because he came back in the game after he did
- 47:19Speaker 2: go down hard on a particular play. And then the
- 47:23Speaker 2: game kind of slips away and Tramell Jones comes in
- 47:25Speaker 2: and finishes it up, you know, orchestrating the last offensive drive.
- 47:29Speaker 2: So there was nothing that led you to believe on Monday, hey,
- 47:32Speaker 2: what's up with Aaron Filo? And so now this is
- 47:35Speaker 2: kind of a surprise with these reports coming out. I'll
- 47:38Speaker 2: meet with Coach Summerall tomorrow, I'll probably get a better
- 47:41Speaker 2: picture of it. He has been very good, as it
- 47:46Speaker 2: goes in college football, about sharing injury type news. And
- 47:52Speaker 2: so it doesn't surprise me a little bit that there's
- 47:54Speaker 2: been some reports today before, as you said, that official
- 47:57Speaker 2: report comes out tonight. If he can go, great for
- 48:01Speaker 2: the Gators, you know, obviously continuity there. What's that shoulder like?
- 48:06Speaker 2: Hard to say. If he doesn't go, if he can't
- 48:08Speaker 2: play on Saturday or they decide they need to be
- 48:11Speaker 2: careful with him, then Tramiel Jones Jr. makes his first
- 48:14Speaker 2: career start at DKR. And are you kidding me? And
- 48:19Speaker 2: I think back, Craig, two years ago, Aiden Warner, a
- 48:23Speaker 2: walk-on from the Ivy League, starts for the Gators at
- 48:25Speaker 2: quarterback at Texas. We know how that went. And sure enough,
- 48:29Speaker 2: what will happen if Aaron Filo doesn't play on Saturday
- 48:33Speaker 2: and Trammell Jones Jr. starts, which, by the way, he's
- 48:36Speaker 2: proven he can be kind of 1A on the depth chart.
- 48:39Speaker 2: Then here's Aiden Warner, who's a play away again from
- 48:43Speaker 2: playing against Texas at DKR. So, you know, just when
- 48:47Speaker 2: you think you know and your game prep's wrapping up,
- 48:50Speaker 2: hold on, hold on. Make sure you've got some notes
- 48:52Speaker 2: on some other guys because there's, you know, obviously late
- 48:56Speaker 2: developments as we head toward A very early kick, Craig.
- 49:00Speaker 2: Nice job on that. That's your fault on Saturday.
- 49:03Speaker 1: Yeah. Need I also mention that at the same time,
- 49:07Speaker 1: or at least overlapping the same time as Texas and Florida,
- 49:10Speaker 1: DJ Lagway would be a hundred miles up the road
- 49:12Speaker 1: in Waco leading the Baylor Bears against the TCU Horned Frogs.
- 49:16Speaker 1: Who's had a nice season, right?
- 49:18Speaker 2: And injured a little bit early on, but you know,
- 49:20Speaker 2: Baylor's a nice story out of Waco right now. Billy Napier, meanwhile,
- 49:26Speaker 2: has got James Madison rolling.
- 49:27Speaker 9: He does.
- 49:28Speaker 2: The roster he inherits. But there's nothing going on around
- 49:34Speaker 2: the Gators right now that say, boy, how do we
- 49:36Speaker 2: let Lagway go?
- 49:37Speaker 9: Or.
- 49:38Speaker 2: boy, I don't know, do we make the right move
- 49:41Speaker 2: with regard to Napier? There's been none of that. But
- 49:44Speaker 2: it is an interesting sidebar to use, you know, J-school
- 49:48Speaker 2: terminology as to what's going on and the ties that
- 49:52Speaker 2: continue to weave this thing in college football where I
- 49:56Speaker 2: don't know about you. I'm having that hard time of like,
- 50:00Speaker 2: do I say where the guy played last year? Do
- 50:03Speaker 2: I do it like a pro game where we're doing
- 50:06Speaker 2: transaction reports in the middle of games? Or what about
- 50:09Speaker 2: guys who are on their third school too? I've almost
- 50:12Speaker 2: gotten Craig to the place where it's so-and-so plays for
- 50:16Speaker 2: the Longhorns, and that'll be just fine for today's news.
- 50:20Speaker 1: I have two segments that are set aside in the
- 50:24Speaker 1: pregame to go in detail and depth on the starters.
- 50:28Speaker 1: So I give myself enough time to say, began his
- 50:32Speaker 1: collegiate career at James Madison, began his collegiate career at Baylor,
- 50:36Speaker 1: something like that. I give myself enough time. I don't
- 50:39Speaker 1: always get to it, that sort of thing. But it's
- 50:41Speaker 1: a good point. One more thing I wanted to ask you.
- 50:44Speaker 1: The old deal about what area do you feel needs...
- 50:49Speaker 1: the biggest step forward this week, regardless of whether Aaron
- 50:52Speaker 1: Philo can play and if he's good and all that
- 50:54Speaker 1: other kind of stuff. But what other area or what
- 50:56Speaker 1: area do you feel needs to take the biggest step
- 51:00Speaker 1: this week on the road in Austin?
- 51:02Speaker 2: I think that the Gators have got to get their
- 51:04Speaker 2: run game thing going again. And that not just goes
- 51:09Speaker 2: for Saturday. That goes for the rest of the way.
- 51:11Speaker 2: Because of the way Buster Faulkner's offense is built, it
- 51:15Speaker 2: sets so many other things up. this stat's not relevant now. Well,
- 51:19Speaker 2: it is relevant or it gives you some, I guess,
- 51:21Speaker 2: perspective here. Aaron Files' first seven touchdown passes this year
- 51:26Speaker 2: were six of them were off play action. So the
- 51:28Speaker 2: run game was having an effect, not just monster numbers
- 51:30Speaker 2: and explosives, but it was setting things up for a
- 51:34Speaker 2: terrific class of wide receivers. The top two guys have
- 51:38Speaker 2: been banged up, but hoping they'll look more like themselves
- 51:42Speaker 2: this week if Vernell Brown III can return and Eric
- 51:45Speaker 2: Singleton's again a little bit better with that high ankle
- 51:49Speaker 2: sprain that he suffered last month. So that's one thing.
- 51:52Speaker 2: And I think the other thing too, Craig, is that
- 51:56Speaker 2: if you're looking on the defensive side of the football,
- 51:59Speaker 2: it's been a really leaky secondary. Can they get something
- 52:03Speaker 2: against Arch Manning that maybe makes them feel a little
- 52:06Speaker 2: bit better? Now, When Texas rolls out their band of
- 52:10Speaker 2: merry wide receivers, probably smiling from ear to ear looking
- 52:14Speaker 2: at Florida's defensive pass numbers right now, that'll be an
- 52:18Speaker 2: interesting deal. But I'll go back to the third down
- 52:21Speaker 2: comment I made earlier. I think Texas will give the
- 52:24Speaker 2: Gators some chances to get off the field. And if
- 52:27Speaker 2: they don't take advantage of that, it's going to be
- 52:29Speaker 2: a big problem. If Texas is sputtering a little bit offensively,
- 52:33Speaker 2: but yet... the Gators allow them to convert a third
- 52:36Speaker 2: and long type situation, extend a drive, then all you've
- 52:40Speaker 2: done is made yourself more vulnerable to the crazy or
- 52:43Speaker 2: giving Arch one more chance to beat you with his
- 52:46Speaker 2: feet or make that throw that seems like Arch pulls
- 52:50Speaker 2: out of his toolbox every once in a while and
- 52:53Speaker 2: makes you forget about some of the throws that frustrate you.
- 52:55Speaker 2: So that's a deal. And then mentally too, Craig, whether
- 53:00Speaker 2: it's Philo or Jones at quarterback, or whether the start
- 53:05Speaker 2: goes well or not, Florida has to get mentally to
- 53:08Speaker 2: the place where they're not in a, uh-oh, here we
- 53:11Speaker 2: go again situation. And they also have not done well
- 53:14Speaker 2: playing from behind. And that can happen on the road.
- 53:16Speaker 2: So those are some bullet points, I guess, as far
- 53:20Speaker 2: as what Florida would need to do to kind of
- 53:22Speaker 2: shock Texas and then re-energize their season before the bye
- 53:26Speaker 2: and then Georgia.
- 53:27Speaker 4: So we'll see.
- 53:29Speaker 1: Always great to visit with Sean Kelly, play-by-play voice of
- 53:31Speaker 1: the Florida Gators. I look forward to seeing you in
- 53:33Speaker 1: town this week. I look a little less than forward
- 53:37Speaker 1: to showing you your broadcast, but you've heard it. You've
- 53:40Speaker 1: heard where you're going to be by now, so you
- 53:42Speaker 1: know the deal. I'm anxious to get your perspective comparing
- 53:47Speaker 1: that with Auburn. since you've been to Auburn. I haven't,
- 53:49Speaker 1: but I've heard stories about Auburn.
- 53:51Speaker 2: We'll talk more on Saturday and I'll try to have
- 53:53Speaker 2: a cheery spirit about it. But, you know, visits to
- 53:57Speaker 2: like Matz L Rancho and Salt Lick, they'll help ease
- 54:01Speaker 2: the pain a little bit. And I'll still regard Austin
- 54:05Speaker 2: as one of my favorite road stops. And I'll be
- 54:09Speaker 2: a good sport, Craig. I appreciate that.
- 54:12Speaker 1: Hey, thanks. It's great to visit with you. I appreciate
- 54:14Speaker 1: you doing this. I look forward to seeing you on Saturday.
- 54:16Speaker 1: On Friday. See you on Friday.
- 54:17Speaker 2: On Friday, yes. We'll do that. And I look forward
- 54:21Speaker 2: to getting the rest of the playlist for Yacht Rock Wednesday.
- 54:25Speaker 1: Please do.
- 54:26Speaker 2: Update me on Friday.
- 54:27Speaker 1: I'll do it. Thanks, Sean.
- 54:29Speaker 6: See you.
- 54:29Speaker 4: All right.
- 54:30Speaker 1: That's Sean Kelly, play-by-play voice of the Florida Gators. More
- 54:32Speaker 1: coming up on Sports Radio AM 13 Under the Zone
- 54:34Speaker 1: and the iHeartRadio app. The recently passed Neil Sedaka. Bad
- 54:39Speaker 1: Blood from about 1975. I have two friends that I,
- 54:44Speaker 1: two very close friends are roomed with those two guys
- 54:48Speaker 1: and somebody else in the house in Denton and North Texas.
- 54:51Speaker 1: And they have a little combo and they play from
- 54:54Speaker 1: time to time. And it's just basically, they got a
- 54:59Speaker 1: little bit of backing music percussion behind them, but it's
- 55:02Speaker 1: mainly just acoustic guitar and then singing and they harmonize
- 55:07Speaker 1: really well. And they do a version of this That's
- 55:10Speaker 1: kind of not a cappella, but it's almost an instrumental
- 55:14Speaker 1: type thing, an acoustic version. And it's pretty good. It's
- 55:18Speaker 1: pretty good on that bad blood. Here on a Yacht
- 55:21Speaker 1: Rock Wednesday. No bad blood in the Texas women's basketball program.
- 55:24Speaker 1: They're getting ready for a brand new season. And Vic
- 55:27Speaker 1: Schaefer was asked at the media availability the other day
- 55:30Speaker 1: about how he goes about coaching toughness and leadership, no
- 55:34Speaker 1: longer having Rory Harmon in the gym.
- 55:38Speaker 9: You know, I said this coming out of practice on Friday.
- 55:40Speaker 9: Rory impacted the game so much on both ends. She
- 55:43Speaker 9: covered everybody's butt. I mean, I would say it in practice.
- 55:50Speaker 9: I would say it in games. I mean, y'all saw
- 55:53Speaker 9: how many charges she took and all that. And, again,
- 55:57Speaker 9: going into last year, before Rory got her fifth year,
- 56:01Speaker 9: I was more than comfortable with Bree Preston, if that
- 56:04Speaker 9: was who our point guard was going to be. And
- 56:06Speaker 9: I'm excited about Bree being our point guard this year.
- 56:09Speaker 2: She's ready.
- 56:10Speaker 9: She's ready for the opportunity. She's got the keys to
- 56:13Speaker 9: the car. And she's got to learn to drive it now.
- 56:17Speaker 9: And driving it means both ends. And so, you know,
- 56:23Speaker 9: we not only lose our point guard, but we lost
- 56:26Speaker 9: our best perimeter defender. And so now I'm searching for that.
- 56:30Speaker 9: That's part of these practices. Okay, who's going to be
- 56:33Speaker 9: our best perimeter defender? And, and so, and, and, and
- 56:37Speaker 9: you gotta, you gotta develop that. I mean, we're developing
- 56:40Speaker 9: that right now, obviously. And so, but Bree is, you know,
- 56:45Speaker 9: really Bree brings a lot to the table. She's got
- 56:47Speaker 9: a lot in her arsenal, I think offensively. And, and
- 56:52Speaker 9: I'm excited about her and looking forward to her having
- 56:56Speaker 9: a great.
- 56:56Speaker 2: Year for us.
- 56:57Speaker 9: But there was just so many other things that her,
- 57:02Speaker 9: you know, Kyla impacted the game defensively.
- 57:04Speaker 2: I mean, And so, y'all know me.
- 57:07Speaker 9: And we were a great offensive team a year ago.
- 57:11Speaker 9: But whether we're a great offensive team or just average,
- 57:15Speaker 9: we're always typically pretty good defensively. And we've been able
- 57:19Speaker 9: to hang our hat on that year in and year
- 57:22Speaker 9: out where we might have a team that struggles on offense,
- 57:26Speaker 9: but we're always going to win or we're going to
- 57:28Speaker 9: be in games because defensively we're always tough. I've been
- 57:32Speaker 9: asked the question a lot about You know, if you
- 57:34Speaker 9: were a football coach, what would you coach? And, you know,
- 57:38Speaker 9: how you approach the game and how you want your
- 57:41Speaker 9: teams to play.
- 57:42Speaker 2: I mean, and I listen.
- 57:44Speaker 9: I'm watching teams every weekend right now in the fall.
- 57:47Speaker 9: And I just had a staff meeting and told my staff,
- 57:50Speaker 9: the thing that resonates to me with these coaches that
- 57:53Speaker 9: are winning is they're talking about how tough their teams are,
- 57:57Speaker 9: how physical they play. And you guys know I embrace that, man.
- 58:01Speaker 2: That's what I want to be.
- 58:03Speaker 9: I want to be a tough, physical, aggressive basketball team.
- 58:07Speaker 9: And so just trying to develop that right now with
- 58:10Speaker 9: our team is as important as anything we can run
- 58:14Speaker 9: on offense. Because to me, that permeates through your team
- 58:19Speaker 9: and how you execute.
- 58:22Speaker 2: It permeates through your team and how you approach things.
- 58:26Speaker 9: Um defending people um it it it permeates through your
- 58:31Speaker 9: team and how you approach rebounding um and so i
- 58:35Speaker 9: just i uh as i told my staff this morning
- 58:38Speaker 9: like we have got to get tougher we have got
- 58:42Speaker 9: to become more physical because to me at the end
- 58:45Speaker 9: of the day those are the teams that win and
- 58:48Speaker 9: um and they know i want my teams to be
- 58:50Speaker 9: that tough physical aggressive and that doesn't say anything about
- 58:54Speaker 9: your skill set y'all But if you're tough, physical, and aggressive,
- 58:58Speaker 9: I promise you, no matter what sport, you're going to
- 59:00Speaker 9: have a chance to win every night.
- 59:03Speaker 1: Next, he was asked about with not having Harmon there,
- 59:07Speaker 1: what about the leadership thing? Breonna Preston taking over point guard,
- 59:10Speaker 1: Madison Booker there. How about the leadership element?
- 59:13Speaker 2: I think both of them have really learned to become vocal.
- 59:19Speaker 9: As I said last year after the Vanderbilt game, Madison's
- 59:26Speaker 9: voice is the one that permeated through the gym that Friday.
- 59:30Speaker 9: And it continued throughout the rest of the season. And
- 59:34Speaker 9: she's picked up where she left off a year ago.
- 59:36Speaker 9: She's doing a really, really incredible job. But she also
- 59:40Speaker 9: leads by example. You know, she practices hard. She plays hard.
- 59:45Speaker 9: You know, she understands what it takes both ends of
- 59:50Speaker 9: the floor. So I think, again, from a leadership perspective,
- 59:55Speaker 9: both those kids have lived it. You know, Brea is
- 59:58Speaker 9: more of a, she's not quite as vocal, but she
- 1:00:04Speaker 9: shows up every day and puts in her work and,
- 1:00:08Speaker 9: you know, does what she's supposed to do. And she's learning,
- 1:00:12Speaker 9: you know, I've got to teach her to stay out
- 1:00:14Speaker 9: of foul trouble. I think that's going to be a
- 1:00:16Speaker 9: big key for her. But, again, she won't be in
- 1:00:20Speaker 9: as much foul trouble if my guards will learn to
- 1:00:22Speaker 9: guard and not give up so much trouble penetration.
- 1:00:25Speaker 2: You know, it all ties together, y'all.
- 1:00:28Speaker 9: And that's where I think people really lose sight of.
- 1:00:30Speaker 9: I read the paper this morning. Y'all know I read
- 1:00:34Speaker 9: the paper. And usually I can get through that paper
- 1:00:36Speaker 9: in about five minutes, ten minutes maybe. This morning it
- 1:00:40Speaker 9: was a 30-minute read. I mean, I read every article.
- 1:00:43Speaker 9: I read everything that's being said. And change doesn't mean
- 1:00:51Speaker 9: there's going to be a different outcome. and I, I, I,
- 1:00:55Speaker 9: it doesn't, and, and it's all tied together, you know,
- 1:00:59Speaker 9: everything we do, you know, we got to execute, we
- 1:01:02Speaker 9: got to run plays, but then on the other end,
- 1:01:03Speaker 9: we got to defend, and then, oh, by the way,
- 1:01:06Speaker 9: rebounding's part of defense, so you can, you can make
- 1:01:09Speaker 9: a miss, but then if you don't get the rebound, well,
- 1:01:13Speaker 9: you know, I'm reminded of back when I was at
- 1:01:16Speaker 9: A & M, and we gave up 25 offensive rebounds,
- 1:01:19Speaker 9: got upset at home to Oklahoma State, to the to
- 1:01:22Speaker 9: the female version of big country. I mean, she just
- 1:01:25Speaker 9: destroyed us. And we got upset at home, and I
- 1:01:29Speaker 9: was in charge of the defense. And Coach Blair walked
- 1:01:31Speaker 9: by my office that morning, and then he backed up
- 1:01:34Speaker 9: three steps, and he leaned back this way, and he said, hey,
- 1:01:37Speaker 9: by the way, rebounding is part of defense.
- 1:01:41Speaker 2: And then he walked on.
- 1:01:43Speaker 9: Wasn't a butt chewing. It wasn't a raised voice. It
- 1:01:46Speaker 9: was a statement that resonated with me. And It's all
- 1:01:53Speaker 9: tied together. I mean, there's so many things that are
- 1:01:56Speaker 9: part of the process that allow you to be successful
- 1:01:59Speaker 9: and win. And when you have just one breakdown, sometimes
- 1:02:04Speaker 9: that's the breakdown that'll end up costing you. And for us,
- 1:02:09Speaker 9: that's where I'm battling right now is, okay, we can
- 1:02:12Speaker 9: make you miss, but can we go get a defensive rebound?
- 1:02:15Speaker 9: You know, we're going against those guys every day a
- 1:02:18Speaker 9: lot of the time, and I haven't put a governor
- 1:02:20Speaker 9: on them. And I've told my team, I'm not. Like,
- 1:02:23Speaker 9: you've got to get ready. This is what our world
- 1:02:25Speaker 9: is here at Texas. And you've got to put, you know,
- 1:02:29Speaker 9: you've got to understand. And so, you know, everything, you
- 1:02:35Speaker 9: have to do everything, each and every possession, in order
- 1:02:38Speaker 9: for us to be successful. And for me, with these kids,
- 1:02:42Speaker 9: you know, coaching every little detail. Like these freshmen, I
- 1:02:46Speaker 9: can just see their heads spinning. They're like, oh, my God,
- 1:02:48Speaker 9: I think I got that fixed, but no. Coach is
- 1:02:51Speaker 9: saying he's a plumber. He gets this leak fixed and
- 1:02:53Speaker 9: he's got another leak over here.
- 1:02:55Speaker 2: And it's true.
- 1:02:56Speaker 9: But that's what you're going to go through with these
- 1:02:57Speaker 9: freshmen to help them understand.
- 1:03:00Speaker 2: We're not hooping anymore.
- 1:03:03Speaker 9: You're one of the best players in the country and
- 1:03:04Speaker 9: you can control a game in high school. Every night
- 1:03:07Speaker 9: you step on the floor, you're going to be one
- 1:03:10Speaker 9: of several.
- 1:03:11Speaker 2: And by the way, the other team is going to
- 1:03:12Speaker 2: have several too. And so.
- 1:03:15Speaker 9: you know, I think that's the challenge with these young
- 1:03:19Speaker 9: kids is just helping them understand the importance of execution
- 1:03:24Speaker 9: in every little phase, every possession, because.
- 1:03:29Speaker 2: At the end of the day, you got to do it.
- 1:03:32Speaker 1: And one other thing that's really cool is they've sold
- 1:03:35Speaker 1: out season tickets for the first time ever. And Vic
- 1:03:39Speaker 1: was asked if he could remember walking into the Irwin
- 1:03:43Speaker 1: Center when they'd have 15, 2,000, 2,500 fans or whatever,
- 1:03:46Speaker 1: and the change from then until now.
- 1:03:49Speaker 9: You know, I even go back to, you know, we
- 1:03:51Speaker 9: did this at Mississippi State, and we'd have so few
- 1:03:55Speaker 9: people there that, you know, you had to whisper on
- 1:03:57Speaker 9: press row because everybody in the gym could hear you.
- 1:04:00Speaker 2: And then we come here, and I'm like, how in
- 1:04:01Speaker 2: the world are we only averaging 2,300 people and.
- 1:04:05Speaker 9: We've got 1,100 season ticket holders in a metropolis like this.
- 1:04:09Speaker 9: And so, as y'all have heard me say a million times,
- 1:04:13Speaker 9: part of building a program is building your fan base.
- 1:04:15Speaker 2: But you've got to give them something.
- 1:04:19Speaker 9: In my mind, you've got to give them something that
- 1:04:21Speaker 9: they want to identify with, that when they bring their kid,
- 1:04:25Speaker 9: that they walk out of the gym and go, hey,
- 1:04:27Speaker 9: I want you to play like Rory Harmon or Madison
- 1:04:31Speaker 9: Booker or whoever, Joanne Allen-Taylor. Like, I want you to
- 1:04:36Speaker 9: play that hard, whether it's their son or their daughter.
- 1:04:39Speaker 9: And you're right, that first year, of course, made it worse.
- 1:04:44Speaker 2: We had COVID. And so it was really, really bad.
- 1:04:49Speaker 2: And then that next year, if I'm.
- 1:04:52Speaker 9: Not mistaken, we had 5,000 for an NCAA tournament game,
- 1:04:57Speaker 9: second-round game, because we hosted.
- 1:04:59Speaker 2: And I thought, man.
- 1:05:01Speaker 9: That was pretty incredible to get 5,000, 6,000 for that game.
- 1:05:06Speaker 9: But in that arena, 3,000 sounded like 300. I mean,
- 1:05:11Speaker 9: you know, the walls just went forever and the ceiling
- 1:05:13Speaker 9: went forever. And so it just was really hard to
- 1:05:17Speaker 9: have any kind of atmosphere in that building. And so,
- 1:05:24Speaker 9: but over time, you know, it's taken us a while,
- 1:05:28Speaker 9: but this is year seven and Again, I tell our
- 1:05:31Speaker 9: kids all the time, these are people that are investing
- 1:05:35Speaker 9: their hard-earned money to come watch you play. We owe
- 1:05:39Speaker 9: them our very best every day, not just on game night.
- 1:05:43Speaker 2: That ain't enough. That won't work.
- 1:05:45Speaker 9: We owe them our best every day, wherever we are,
- 1:05:50Speaker 9: out in the community, social media, wherever. We owe them
- 1:05:54Speaker 9: our best because they are invested in us. And they
- 1:05:58Speaker 9: provide such an incredible atmosphere in the Moody. So it's
- 1:06:04Speaker 9: been fun. I get letters from people all the time
- 1:06:10Speaker 9: talking about how long they've been season ticket holders, how
- 1:06:14Speaker 9: excited they are to see the growth, the excitement in
- 1:06:17Speaker 9: the building. They haven't seen it since back in the
- 1:06:20Speaker 9: 80s with Coach Conrad. They'll say Jody, but I'll say
- 1:06:24Speaker 9: Coach Conrad. Again, I'm proud of that. There's a lot
- 1:06:33Speaker 9: that pulls on people, and they can spend their money
- 1:06:36Speaker 9: in a lot of ways. Again, maybe that's part of
- 1:06:41Speaker 9: my motivation to make sure we're the best we can
- 1:06:43Speaker 9: be night in and night out because I feel a
- 1:06:44Speaker 9: responsibility to those people that.
- 1:06:48Speaker 1: Are investing in us. So there it is from Texas
- 1:06:52Speaker 1: women's head coach, Vic Schaefer. We'll be back to wrap
- 1:06:55Speaker 1: up our number two of the program here on sports
- 1:06:56Speaker 1: radio AM 13 under the zone and the IR radio
- 1:06:59Speaker 1: app for as long. Third and final hour of the
- 1:07:05Speaker 1: program here on Sports Radio AM 1300, The Zone. Craig
- 1:07:08Speaker 1: Way alongside the producer, Jay Kerman. First two hours, we
- 1:07:12Speaker 1: got into some specifics on college football in the state
- 1:07:15Speaker 1: of Texas, high school football, the Florida Gators, a lot
- 1:07:19Speaker 1: of that. We've heard from a variety of parties. And
- 1:07:24Speaker 1: we're going to hear more from.
- 1:07:27Speaker 2: Connor.
- 1:07:27Speaker 1: Robertson here just in a few moments, the Longhorn Center.
- 1:07:31Speaker 1: We're going to hear more from Brian Schottenheimer and D'Amico Ryans.
- 1:07:36Speaker 1: We're going to hear more from Vic Schaefer talking Texas
- 1:07:38Speaker 1: women's basketball as they draw closer to the start of
- 1:07:40Speaker 1: the regular season and a couple of huge exhibition games
- 1:07:45Speaker 1: they have coming up. I did want to jump back
- 1:07:49Speaker 1: into some baseball here. um, uh, to talk about, not
- 1:07:53Speaker 1: only did, you know, we mentioned the Joe Espada, uh,
- 1:07:56Speaker 1: dismissal as the, uh, Astros manager. So, um, they said
- 1:08:01Speaker 1: that they have agreed to part company. Um, and the
- 1:08:06Speaker 1: Astros said they would not renew his contract when it
- 1:08:10Speaker 1: expires at the end of the, end of the month, uh,
- 1:08:13Speaker 1: two 56 and two 29 is the manager in Houston.
- 1:08:17Speaker 1: And he had, uh, or Houston granted permission on Tuesday
- 1:08:22Speaker 1: to the Mariners to interview him for their managerial vacancy. Sure,
- 1:08:28Speaker 1: knock yourself out because he won't be here anyway. So,
- 1:08:31Speaker 1: and they also parted ways with catching instructor, Tim Cossons,
- 1:08:36Speaker 1: game planning coach, Tommy Kawamura, third base coach, Tony Parachica,
- 1:08:42Speaker 1: assistant coach, Hitting coach, Anthony Iaposi, and assistant pitching coach,
- 1:08:49Speaker 1: Ethan Katz. That is a mouthful just on the assistant
- 1:08:52Speaker 1: coaches there with those pronunciations. And, of course, the Astros
- 1:08:57Speaker 1: are searching for a new manager now, Anthony. and a
- 1:09:00Speaker 1: new general manager. Remember, former GM Dana Brown was let
- 1:09:04Speaker 1: go in August. Espada, of course, had been bench coach
- 1:09:09Speaker 1: after the 2023 season promoted to manager after Dusty Baker retired.
- 1:09:14Speaker 1: They won their seventh american league west crown at eight
- 1:09:18Speaker 1: seasons in 2024 but they lost in the wild card
- 1:09:21Speaker 1: and then uh they finished second in 2025 they in
- 1:09:25Speaker 1: the west failed to make the postseason for the first
- 1:09:27Speaker 1: time since 2016 uh they did win the division with
- 1:09:30Speaker 1: an 81 and 81 record the first time in major
- 1:09:34Speaker 1: league history that a team reached the playoffs without a
- 1:09:36Speaker 1: winning record and then of course they got swept by
- 1:09:39Speaker 1: the white socks so uh Anyway, the Astros, of course,
- 1:09:43Speaker 1: going a different direction. And the Philadelphia Phillies are going
- 1:09:46Speaker 1: to stay with the direction they have. Don Mattingly was
- 1:09:49Speaker 1: given a two-year extension. He, of course, had guided the
- 1:09:52Speaker 1: Phillies to the postseason after taking over as the interim
- 1:09:55Speaker 1: manager 28 games into the season. But he will return
- 1:10:00Speaker 1: as the team's manager. Two-year deal. He had been hired
- 1:10:03Speaker 1: last year as bench coach. And Mattingly took the reins
- 1:10:07Speaker 1: after Rob Thompson was fired in April. mattingly helped the
- 1:10:13Speaker 1: turn around the team and uh and then after that
- 1:10:17Speaker 1: and and you may not know this he's also the
- 1:10:19Speaker 1: father of the phillies gm preston mattingly uh and uh
- 1:10:24Speaker 1: despite losing four games in a row during the final
- 1:10:27Speaker 1: week of the regular season they got into the wild
- 1:10:29Speaker 1: card forcing a decisive game three with the braves before
- 1:10:32Speaker 1: they lost to atlanta of course tonight uh You have
- 1:10:35Speaker 1: game three of the National League Championship Series in Los Angeles.
- 1:10:40Speaker 1: Dodgers trailing two games to none to the Milwaukee Brewers.
- 1:10:43Speaker 1: I know they say, and we talked about this with
- 1:10:46Speaker 1: Babe Laufenberg last week, that when you say you have
- 1:10:53Speaker 1: a must-win situation, must-win situation, in Babe's mind, and in
- 1:10:59Speaker 1: the minds of many, really and truly only applies to
- 1:11:02Speaker 1: the game that if you lose that game, your season
- 1:11:04Speaker 1: is over. That's not the case in L.A., but it's
- 1:11:07Speaker 1: darn near it because if they do lose tonight, they
- 1:11:09Speaker 1: go down three games to none. It's only happened once
- 1:11:12Speaker 1: in Major League history that a team down three games
- 1:11:14Speaker 1: to none in the postseason has come back to win
- 1:11:16Speaker 1: the series, that being the 0-4 Red Sox, down three
- 1:11:19Speaker 1: zip to the Yankees. So that's where that is, and L.A.
- 1:11:24Speaker 1: will have to– try to turn it around to see
- 1:11:26Speaker 1: if they can go. They are going to have Shohei
- 1:11:28Speaker 1: Ohtani in the lineup. There was some discussion as to
- 1:11:30Speaker 1: whether Shohei could possibly be benched also based on his
- 1:11:35Speaker 1: physical situation, but they say even though he's not 100%,
- 1:11:37Speaker 1: he's good to go, so he's going to play for
- 1:11:40Speaker 1: them tonight. So we'll see what happens with the Dodgers
- 1:11:43Speaker 1: and the Phillies. All right, to jump back to football
- 1:11:48Speaker 1: and to jump back to the Longhorns, Connor Robertson was asked, uh, about,
- 1:11:54Speaker 1: and this was in the media session the other day, uh,
- 1:11:58Speaker 1: asked about how they're trying to get, uh, the offense
- 1:12:01Speaker 1: in gear and the best way to get the offense
- 1:12:03Speaker 1: in gear, at least the initial way to get the
- 1:12:05Speaker 1: offensive in gear is to get the running game in gear.
- 1:12:09Speaker 1: And that hasn't been, uh, for the last couple of
- 1:12:12Speaker 1: ball games. So Robertson was asked what is missing right
- 1:12:15Speaker 1: now for the offensive line in their performances in the
- 1:12:18Speaker 1: run game?
- 1:12:19Speaker 4: I think we're really close. I mean, I think, you know,
- 1:12:21Speaker 4: we just got to get some explosive plays going. Um,
- 1:12:23Speaker 4: You know, we've got to keep doing our best to
- 1:12:25Speaker 4: execute and communicate as consistently as we can. And, you know,
- 1:12:30Speaker 4: I think we're close. So just got to keep coming
- 1:12:32Speaker 4: to work every day and, you know, ready for the
- 1:12:34Speaker 4: opportunity this week.
- 1:12:35Speaker 1: Okay.
- 1:12:36Speaker 3: All right.
- 1:12:36Speaker 1: So there was that. And one area that might make
- 1:12:40Speaker 1: a difference could be the performance of Derek Cooper. Now,
- 1:12:44Speaker 1: Cooper had a couple of nice runs in the game
- 1:12:48Speaker 1: last Saturday against Oklahoma, but only a couple of carries
- 1:12:50Speaker 1: in the second half. He's a different kind of runner
- 1:12:53Speaker 1: than Hollywood Smothers and Raleigh Brown. So he's a different
- 1:12:58Speaker 1: kind of guy in that. But he was asked about
- 1:13:01Speaker 1: Cooper and the possibility, the opportunities there.
- 1:13:04Speaker 4: Derrick's a great guy, man. Great running back. I think
- 1:13:07Speaker 4: he's very versatile. You know, obviously can get out in
- 1:13:09Speaker 4: space and move. But he's really good in between tackles,
- 1:13:13Speaker 4: you know. And I think the biggest thing for Derrick is,
- 1:13:16Speaker 4: I mean, he's a true freshman and he's smart, you know,
- 1:13:19Speaker 4: done everything. don't act like a true freshman necessarily. So
- 1:13:23Speaker 4: I'm excited, excited for his growth and I'm excited to,
- 1:13:25Speaker 4: you know, to keep playing with him the rest of
- 1:13:27Speaker 4: this year.
- 1:13:27Speaker 1: From growth comes maturity and Robertson says that's a big
- 1:13:30Speaker 1: factor in play here.
- 1:13:31Speaker 4: I think he's just mature for his age, maybe, you know,
- 1:13:35Speaker 4: you know, he does all the right stuff, you know,
- 1:13:38Speaker 4: and takes care of his body, takes care of his mind.
- 1:13:41Speaker 4: Like I said, you know, knows, knows the playbook, knows
- 1:13:43Speaker 4: what he's doing. You know, that's, that's what you want
- 1:13:45Speaker 4: to see out of a guy like that.
- 1:13:46Speaker 1: So.
- 1:13:47Speaker 4: It's been awesome to be around him.
- 1:13:48Speaker 1: What the Longhorns have done pretty well is take care
- 1:13:51Speaker 1: of the passer. They did give up some sacks against Tennessee,
- 1:13:54Speaker 1: a couple against Oklahoma, but they, by and large, have
- 1:13:57Speaker 1: been pretty good in pass protection. Why so?
- 1:14:00Speaker 4: I think it's just, you know, trusting each other. I
- 1:14:02Speaker 4: think that's the biggest thing that we're trying to work
- 1:14:04Speaker 4: on right now is just keep trusting each other. You know,
- 1:14:06Speaker 4: me trusting the guards, the guards trusting the tackles, and
- 1:14:09Speaker 4: ultimately all of us trusting each other. And then, you know,
- 1:14:12Speaker 4: communication and execution, really.
- 1:14:14Speaker 1: All right, and... you know, within that circle of trust,
- 1:14:19Speaker 1: if you will, comes the goal of trying to be
- 1:14:22Speaker 1: more consistent on offense and not have all the three
- 1:14:25Speaker 1: and outs. They had four consecutive, you know, three and
- 1:14:28Speaker 1: outs during the second half of the game against Oklahoma.
- 1:14:31Speaker 1: They had several against Tennessee as well. It can really
- 1:14:34Speaker 1: frustrate an offense. And Robertson was asked, did it impact
- 1:14:40Speaker 1: the team, the frustration in the second half when it
- 1:14:42Speaker 1: was three and out, three and out, and on and on?
- 1:14:44Speaker 4: I wouldn't say that. Credit to OU. They played a
- 1:14:47Speaker 4: great ballgame, but I'm not really concerned myself with that anymore.
- 1:14:53Speaker 4: Just focus on this week and Florida, who's a really
- 1:14:56Speaker 4: good football team.
- 1:14:57Speaker 1: Yeah, so that'll be important for them to dial in on, absolutely,
- 1:15:03Speaker 1: this week. In terms of some other college football notes,
- 1:15:09Speaker 1: you know.
- 1:15:11Speaker 1: Guess who landed in the bottom 10? You know, if
- 1:15:16Speaker 1: we're going to read the bottom 10 every week from
- 1:15:22Speaker 1: Ryan McGee, he does a great job with this. It's
- 1:15:24Speaker 1: very tongue in cheek. You know, if you're going to
- 1:15:28Speaker 1: read it when Texas A & M is in it,
- 1:15:31Speaker 1: you got to read it when Texas is in it
- 1:15:33Speaker 1: as well. And again, as has been pointed out, These
- 1:15:36Speaker 1: are not the 10 worst football teams in the country,
- 1:15:38Speaker 1: although some of the nation's worst teams are in the
- 1:15:41Speaker 1: bottom 10 every week. And they have the nicknames based
- 1:15:45Speaker 1: on their name, what he calls them. But usually in
- 1:15:49Speaker 1: the middle of the pack, in that five spot, is
- 1:15:52Speaker 1: usually where he puts a power four team that's supposed
- 1:15:56Speaker 1: to be doing better than it is and suffered an
- 1:16:00Speaker 1: unexpected loss. And as such, he drops them into the
- 1:16:04Speaker 1: bottom 10.
- 1:16:04Speaker 6: So....
- 1:16:06Speaker 1: Ryan McGee, he has his inspirational thought of the week,
- 1:16:11Speaker 1: and it's from the song Autumn Leaves by the great
- 1:16:13Speaker 1: Nat King Cole, where he says, the falling leaves drift
- 1:16:16Speaker 1: by the window, the autumn leaves of red and gold.
- 1:16:20Speaker 1: I see your lips, the summer kisses, the sunburned hands
- 1:16:24Speaker 1: I used to hold. Since you went away, the days
- 1:16:26Speaker 1: grow long, and soon I'll hear old winter's song. But
- 1:16:30Speaker 1: I miss you most of all, my darling, when autumn leaves.
- 1:16:34Speaker 1: start to fall. Great song by Nat King Cole, by
- 1:16:36Speaker 1: the way. And he said, here at bottom 10 headquarters
- 1:16:39Speaker 1: located behind the triage tent reserved for people who thought
- 1:16:43Speaker 1: they could just show up cold and keep up with
- 1:16:46Speaker 1: a Jess Sims Peloton class and ended up blowing out
- 1:16:48Speaker 1: both hamstrings like a police stop strip. We're looking all
- 1:16:54Speaker 1: around us and all we see are the glorious colors
- 1:16:58Speaker 1: of fall. The red of the Western Kentucky Hilltoppers and
- 1:17:02Speaker 1: the perfection of seeing Big Red playing football on black helmets.
- 1:17:06Speaker 1: The orange of the Sam Houston Bearcats, who face Big
- 1:17:09Speaker 1: Red on Wednesday night and will no doubt try to
- 1:17:11Speaker 1: steal all the Ks off of the WKU logos. The
- 1:17:16Speaker 1: brown of boiling green, as he calls it, which just
- 1:17:19Speaker 1: clashed with the green and gold of sack with a K,
- 1:17:22Speaker 1: Sacramento State. The changing colors spreading across the landscape of
- 1:17:28Speaker 1: the United States are a reminder of of the ever-changing
- 1:17:33Speaker 1: landscape of college football. And he's right about that. I mean,
- 1:17:36Speaker 1: tongue-in-cheek notwithstanding. He says, a reminder that even when times
- 1:17:39Speaker 1: are down, change is inevitable. A fresh start is on
- 1:17:41Speaker 1: the way. A chance to renew, to one day rise
- 1:17:45Speaker 1: again from the lowest levels of the ground. But first,
- 1:17:49Speaker 1: as those who make their livings in the bottom 10
- 1:17:51Speaker 1: know all too well, there is the fall, not the season,
- 1:17:54Speaker 1: just a fall. So here's bottom 10. All right, number 10.
- 1:18:01Speaker 1: In a rut, Gers, one in four rut, Gers, he
- 1:18:04Speaker 1: says this weekend, the Scarlet Blights, as he calls them,
- 1:18:09Speaker 1: visit Maryland in the Big Ten, have Ohio State and
- 1:18:12Speaker 1: Michigan have Big Ten. More TV checks yet.
- 1:18:18Speaker 2: Classic.
- 1:18:19Speaker 1: Presented by J.G.
- 1:18:20Speaker 6: Whitworth.
- 1:18:21Speaker 2: Call J.G.
- 1:18:22Speaker 1: Whitworth. That's it.
- 1:18:24Speaker 2: 877-CASH-DOWN.
- 1:18:26Speaker 1: By the way, on the waiting list, he has Novada.
- 1:18:29Speaker 1: Minute Rice. Boiling Green. Western Kentucky Hill Stoppers. Sam Houston,
- 1:18:35Speaker 1: We Have a Problem. All the Minions.
- 1:18:39Speaker 2: Like Gru's Minions.
- 1:18:40Speaker 6: Yes.
- 1:18:42Speaker 1: Southern Mist. Kennesaw Mountain Landis State. They're playing tonight. Kennesaw
- 1:18:48Speaker 1: State's playing Missouri State. now, don't think about it.
- 1:18:50Speaker 3: Yeah, that's how we continue our FBS streak. What was it,
- 1:18:53Speaker 3: the 60 days? We said a few weeks ago, it's underway,
- 1:18:56Speaker 3: but that's all we got tonight for FBS.
- 1:18:58Speaker 1: That's right.
- 1:18:59Speaker 2: H-U-H-W-H-Y-S.
- 1:19:06Speaker 1: Y-U-H.
- 1:19:06Speaker 2: Like Ohio?
- 1:19:08Speaker 1: Or like Hawaii. Yeah, well, yeah. Hawaii, yeah. Washington State,
- 1:19:14Speaker 1: losing play scripts by the hotel lobby breakfast bar. Oh,
- 1:19:18Speaker 1: my gosh. All right. Number nine, Mizzou State. But first,
- 1:19:22Speaker 1: the Bears, B-A-R-E-S. host Kennesaw Mountain Land Estate in this
- 1:19:29Speaker 1: week's Pillow Fight of the Week. It might not be
- 1:19:32Speaker 1: a P-F-O-W-Y, or P-F-O-W-Y-O-T-C, I'm not sure what that is,
- 1:19:39Speaker 1: but a P-F-O-W, oh, Pillow Fight of the Week. It
- 1:19:43Speaker 1: might not be quite a Pillow Fight of the Week year,
- 1:19:46Speaker 1: but he said, but a Pillow Fight of the Week,
- 1:19:49Speaker 1: it definitely is, with another one looming just before Halloween
- 1:19:52Speaker 1: when the Bears host the Bearcats of Sam Houston, we
- 1:19:55Speaker 1: have a problem. Number eight, Akramonius, or Akron. Akron's visit
- 1:20:01Speaker 1: to Miami of Ohio is merely the hors d'oeuvres before
- 1:20:06Speaker 1: the Maction main course over the following two weekends when
- 1:20:09Speaker 1: the Zips travel to two and four bottom 10 waitlisters
- 1:20:12Speaker 1: in waiting state of Kent, which will then turn around
- 1:20:16Speaker 1: and face Sacramento State in what could be our first
- 1:20:19Speaker 1: pillow fight of the week of the year of the century.
- 1:20:22Speaker 2: That's what that is.
- 1:20:24Speaker 1: P-F-O-W-Y-O-T-C of 2026. Number seven, Baller State. They're one in five.
- 1:20:29Speaker 1: The Ballers received $ 875, 000 to play at Northwestern's new Ryan Field,
- 1:20:35Speaker 1: which cost $ 875 million to build. ESPN Analytics gave them
- 1:20:39Speaker 1: a 1% chance to win, and they indeed lost 45-14. Meanwhile,
- 1:20:43Speaker 1: Bottom Ten Analytics gave them a 99% chance of stealing
- 1:20:46Speaker 1: all the Turkish cotton towels and.
- 1:20:52Speaker 1: Accidentally knocked it out, here it is, all the Turkish
- 1:20:57Speaker 1: cotton towels and Hermes Eau d'Orange Verte perfume soap from
- 1:21:03Speaker 1: the Ryan Field locker room, by the way, and as
- 1:21:05Speaker 1: we heard in Inconceivable, they've got an approaching sellout high
- 1:21:10Speaker 1: school football game there, number six, Sacramento State, that's sack
- 1:21:14Speaker 1: with a K, there are those who might think that
- 1:21:17Speaker 1: it's weird that Sacramento State is in the Mid-American Conference.
- 1:21:20Speaker 1: But Boiling Green, which just beat the Saks for its
- 1:21:23Speaker 1: first 2-0 match and started more than a decade, the
- 1:21:26Speaker 1: Falcons think that geography totally works. Number five, here it is,
- 1:21:31Speaker 1: Texas Toast.
- 1:21:33Speaker 3: 4-1.
- 1:21:33Speaker 1: The Horns hooked the coveted fifth spot after losing a
- 1:21:37Speaker 1: Red River rivalry game in which they were favored by
- 1:21:39Speaker 1: a touchdown but lost to an Oklahoma team that lost
- 1:21:41Speaker 1: to Michigan, the team that occupied this spot the previous
- 1:21:44Speaker 1: two weeks. Meanwhile, thanks to Steve Sarkeesian's hypotheticals, I can't
- 1:21:48Speaker 1: shake the mental image of 6'10 Joe Smith, a 16-year
- 1:21:52Speaker 1: NBA veteran suiting up at quarterback.
- 1:21:55Speaker 3: Hey, he might be suiting up in basketball for Will Wade.
- 1:21:59Speaker 1: If that were the case, if Joe Smith were still
- 1:22:01Speaker 1: with us, too.
- 1:22:02Speaker 2: Oh, I forgot about that.
- 1:22:03Speaker 1: Yeah. Number four, Utepid, one in five, the Miners, M-I-N-O-O-R-S,
- 1:22:13Speaker 1: went into the Pillow Fight of the Week of the
- 1:22:15Speaker 1: year against then seventh-ranked Novada with much hope. Unfortunately, the Wolf, W-O-O-F,
- 1:22:22Speaker 1: Wolf Pack, brought some of those pillows from the Pillow
- 1:22:25Speaker 1: Fight Championship on ESPN8, the Ocho, that are made of canvas,
- 1:22:29Speaker 1: have handles, and are swung by people who look like
- 1:22:31Speaker 1: they're extras from Mad Max. Nevada won 30-13. Number three,
- 1:22:36Speaker 1: ULM pronounced oh-hum, oh-five, oh-hum. ULM spent a weekend off
- 1:22:42Speaker 1: at home in Monroe, Louisiana to rest up for this
- 1:22:46Speaker 1: weekend's visit from Louisiana Tech and Ruston, Louisiana. And not
- 1:22:50Speaker 1: to be confused with their earlier visit from southeast Louisiana,
- 1:22:54Speaker 1: it's supposed to be southeastern Louisiana, in Hammond, Louisiana. Or
- 1:22:57Speaker 1: they're November 12th from just Louisiana. Number two, Northern Illinois 0-5.
- 1:23:06Speaker 1: He said, I've accepted the fact that just as I
- 1:23:08Speaker 1: still look for Maryland basketball scores during the ACC tournament
- 1:23:11Speaker 1: and still enter the old year on business forms a
- 1:23:14Speaker 1: full three months into the new year, whenever I'm looking
- 1:23:17Speaker 1: for information about the other Huskies, and that's often, I
- 1:23:20Speaker 1: continue to click on the Mac and not the Mountain West.
- 1:23:23Speaker 1: And finally, number one, the Charlotte 0-6ers, not 49ers. By
- 1:23:27Speaker 1: the way, they lost to North Texas last Saturday, 50-10.
- 1:23:31Speaker 1: Fun fact, every Saturday when I return home from Marty
- 1:23:34Speaker 1: and McGee and SEC Nation, I use a moving sidewalk
- 1:23:38Speaker 1: at the Charlotte Airport. Yep, use that many times. That
- 1:23:41Speaker 1: glides beneath a huge banner promoting 49ers football. Last week
- 1:23:45Speaker 1: it dropped out of the ceiling and attacked me like flypaper.
- 1:23:48Speaker 2: If only their defense could do the same thing.
- 1:23:50Speaker 1: Yeah, exactly. So there's your bottom 10. Yes, the Loghorns.
- 1:23:56Speaker 1: occupy a spot in the humorous take on the bottom
- 1:24:00Speaker 1: 10 teams in the country. Win over Florida will take
- 1:24:02Speaker 1: them right back out of that, by the way.
- 1:24:04Speaker 2: All right.
- 1:24:05Speaker 1: Coming up, we've got more football, the pro football variety
- 1:24:08Speaker 1: to get to. We're also going to hear some more
- 1:24:10Speaker 1: from Vic Schaefer. We continue here on this Yacht Rock
- 1:24:13Speaker 1: Wednesday on Sports Radio AM 13 under the zone and
- 1:24:15Speaker 1: the iHeartRadio app. Here on a Yacht Rock Wednesday. and
- 1:24:24Speaker 1: uh peter allen with fly away here on the island
- 1:24:28Speaker 1: definitely falls right into the genre you familiar with this
- 1:24:31Speaker 1: uh particular tune.
- 1:24:33Speaker 2: I've never heard this before.
- 1:24:34Speaker 1: But i'm enjoying it okay um so um i i
- 1:24:41Speaker 1: thought that i vaguely heard it before in my past
- 1:24:44Speaker 1: sometime but i couldn't be sure of it so i
- 1:24:47Speaker 1: said to linda one time i said you know i'm
- 1:24:48Speaker 1: not sure i've ever heard this but and it almost
- 1:24:52Speaker 1: sounds like there's some tunes I listen to, Yacht Rock tunes,
- 1:24:57Speaker 1: like on the iHeartRadio app or in other sources. And
- 1:25:00Speaker 1: when I listen to them, I think, I hear the
- 1:25:04Speaker 1: tune and I go, oh, I don't think that tune
- 1:25:08Speaker 1: actually was real back in the Yacht Rock. I think
- 1:25:10Speaker 1: it was created for this Yacht Rock channel, or I
- 1:25:12Speaker 1: think it was created for this app, or I think
- 1:25:14Speaker 1: it was created for this, something like that. This song
- 1:25:16Speaker 1: kind of, kind of spoke like that to me. But
- 1:25:21Speaker 1: unlike some of the other ones where I heard were just,
- 1:25:23Speaker 1: that are just not good, that sounded to me like
- 1:25:26Speaker 1: they were created for this time and this genre, that
- 1:25:30Speaker 1: one was actually okay. So I didn't mind that too much.
- 1:25:33Speaker 3: Yeah, it's got the nostalgic quality and you don't even
- 1:25:36Speaker 3: know if it's, it's a little jazzy about that one too.
- 1:25:38Speaker 1: Yep, exactly. On the NFL and one, you know, in
- 1:25:45Speaker 1: addition to, The headline for the Cowboys being that loss
- 1:25:51Speaker 1: to Tampa Bay last week and how that certainly got
- 1:25:58Speaker 1: a lot of people upset because it did not go
- 1:26:03Speaker 1: well for them in that loss was the word that
- 1:26:07Speaker 1: came down this week about Mike Patton being brought in saying, And,
- 1:26:13Speaker 1: you know, being kind of the guy who mentored Christian
- 1:26:16Speaker 1: Parker a little bit. So they brought him back. And
- 1:26:21Speaker 1: a lot of people have wondered if that means there's
- 1:26:25Speaker 1: all these massive changes that are in store for that.
- 1:26:29Speaker 1: Starting off with the fact, Brian Schottenheimer has asked, why
- 1:26:34Speaker 1: did he decide to make the move now instead of
- 1:26:37Speaker 1: even before the start of the season?
- 1:26:39Speaker 7: The two guys that we were talking to, it just
- 1:26:40Speaker 7: didn't work out for different reasons. And we weren't going
- 1:26:45Speaker 7: to just, you know, CP and I are totally aligned
- 1:26:46Speaker 7: on this. We were totally aligned on it in the beginning.
- 1:26:49Speaker 7: I think that's one of the things I love about
- 1:26:50Speaker 7: Christian Parker is he's very self-aware. And we both agreed
- 1:26:55Speaker 7: back in whenever it was, late February, that we weren't
- 1:27:00Speaker 7: going to just bring somebody in to bring somebody in.
- 1:27:02Speaker 7: We weren't going to bring in a guy from a
- 1:27:03Speaker 7: 4-3 defense. We were going to bring in a guy
- 1:27:05Speaker 7: that was a nothing but man-to-man. We wanted to make
- 1:27:09Speaker 7: sure we got the right person. In our conversations throughout
- 1:27:15Speaker 7: this process, it was very evident that if Pat was
- 1:27:20Speaker 7: ever willing to do it, because he just retired. He
- 1:27:23Speaker 7: just decided he was going to retire after his year
- 1:27:26Speaker 7: last year in Minnesota. But he's thrilled to be a
- 1:27:30Speaker 7: Dallas Cowboy.
- 1:27:32Speaker 1: Conversations in the offseason, even though the hiring wasn't made
- 1:27:35Speaker 1: in the offseason, So how did those early conversations in
- 1:27:39Speaker 1: the offseason even get underway?
- 1:27:42Speaker 7: He came in during the spring just to spend a
- 1:27:44Speaker 7: day because he just loves ball.
- 1:27:45Speaker 1: He took trips to a couple different places.
- 1:27:47Speaker 7: But again, this is a trusted friend to myself, a
- 1:27:52Speaker 7: trusted friend to Christian. He's coached with Marcus Dixon. He's
- 1:27:57Speaker 7: coached Rashawn Gary, Kenny Clark, So again, I think, you know,
- 1:28:02Speaker 7: what I'm so excited about is the fit. I think
- 1:28:05Speaker 7: the fit makes a lot of sense because he's coming
- 1:28:07Speaker 7: into the situation, you know, where he's going to be very,
- 1:28:10Speaker 7: very comfortable and therefore can help us, you know, very quickly.
- 1:28:16Speaker 1: One more from Schottenheimer asked about the value, what can
- 1:28:23Speaker 1: be gleaned from this, adding a veteran coach. even five
- 1:28:28Speaker 1: games into the season, basically just a little bit under
- 1:28:31Speaker 1: a third of the way into the season, what the
- 1:28:33Speaker 1: value could be for adding Mike Pettin to the defensive staff.
- 1:28:37Speaker 7: You always... can gain value in that. I think that's
- 1:28:41Speaker 7: what we love about Ken Dorsey. I think the other
- 1:28:44Speaker 7: thing that's important is when you're not coaching a position,
- 1:28:47Speaker 7: it frees you up to do a lot of other things.
- 1:28:49Speaker 7: You're very holistic in your approach when you're not coaching
- 1:28:52Speaker 7: a position.
- 1:28:53Speaker 1: You're able to really.
- 1:28:54Speaker 7: Study the league and the trends and how we want
- 1:28:57Speaker 7: to adjust versus this and how we want to handle that,
- 1:28:59Speaker 7: and so, again, I just, you know, I think, you know,
- 1:29:03Speaker 7: it worked out beautifully for us.
- 1:29:06Speaker 1: Of course, you know, just in time, right, for the
- 1:29:10Speaker 1: Cowboys getting ready for Green Bay to have Mike Petten
- 1:29:14Speaker 1: come in, so the Cowboys will take on the Packers, and,
- 1:29:18Speaker 1: you know, that high-profile schedule of them when they go
- 1:29:22Speaker 1: from Sunday night game to Monday night game to going
- 1:29:27Speaker 1: to Rio to coming back Thursday night game. This is
- 1:29:32Speaker 1: a Sunday night game that they'll be taking on the
- 1:29:35Speaker 1: Packers at Lambeau Field. And, of course, you can hear
- 1:29:39Speaker 1: it on 98.1 FM KVAD coming your way Sunday night again.
- 1:29:43Speaker 1: The kickoff is right around 720 on Sunday. And, by
- 1:29:47Speaker 1: the way, then they follow the Monday game at Philly.
- 1:29:50Speaker 1: So they continue in the high-profile mode. The Rams have
- 1:29:52Speaker 1: kind of been in that mode as well, Sunday nights,
- 1:29:55Speaker 1: followed by they had the Monday night game this week.
- 1:29:57Speaker 1: They've already had two Monday night games and the Thursday
- 1:30:00Speaker 1: game in Australia. So they've had that. But the Cowboys,
- 1:30:05Speaker 1: they don't even get into a back-to-back Sunday mode until
- 1:30:10Speaker 1: week after next. After they play the Monday night game
- 1:30:13Speaker 1: at Philly, then they have three consecutive Sunday games at
- 1:30:19Speaker 1: home against the Cardinals, At Indianapolis, and then the 49ers,
- 1:30:24Speaker 1: actually four straight games. They play the Titans, and then
- 1:30:27Speaker 1: it comes back to Thanksgiving against the Eagles. So, anyway.
- 1:30:30Speaker 3: Well, they could even add another Sunday night game because
- 1:30:33Speaker 3: there's talk of flexing Commander's Eagles out of that spot.
- 1:30:37Speaker 2: That's how bad the NFC East has looked.
- 1:30:39Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah. I saw somebody do a fact or fiction.
- 1:30:44Speaker 1: On that, maybe it was on Mike Tannenbaum and Jeff
- 1:30:48Speaker 1: Saturday when they do their kind of their point counterpoint
- 1:30:51Speaker 1: type of thing. And it was the overreaction or not
- 1:30:54Speaker 1: an overreaction that the NFC East winner is going to
- 1:30:57Speaker 1: be 500, below 500. And I think Tannenbaum said, hey,
- 1:31:03Speaker 1: that's not an overreaction. Because of what's going on, it's
- 1:31:07Speaker 1: not an overreaction. It's kind of how the way I
- 1:31:10Speaker 1: looked at the American League West.
- 1:31:12Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:31:13Speaker 1: During the baseball season. It's kind of how I looked
- 1:31:15Speaker 1: at them on that.
- 1:31:16Speaker 3: You got the Giants 3-1-1, but you beat the Titans
- 1:31:19Speaker 3: on a goal line stand, and you beat Washington because
- 1:31:23Speaker 3: they forgot how to tell time.
- 1:31:24Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:31:25Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:31:26Speaker 4: What a mess.
- 1:31:28Speaker 1: Okay. So, meanwhile, the Texans, who come off their first
- 1:31:32Speaker 1: win of the season, speaking of different time zones, come
- 1:31:37Speaker 1: play in London. You know, for the Jaguars, it's kind
- 1:31:40Speaker 1: of their home away from home. playing in Europe. And
- 1:31:44Speaker 1: the Jags just got through beating the Eagles over there.
- 1:31:46Speaker 2: Yeah, not last week. That was a road game.
- 1:31:48Speaker 3: I mean, you had Jags scoring and Eagles fans abroad
- 1:31:52Speaker 3: flipping the bird.
- 1:31:53Speaker 1: That's right. And the Jags win, and they stayed over
- 1:31:56Speaker 1: there to get ready to take on the Texans. So
- 1:32:00Speaker 1: the Texans will play. And by the way, in case
- 1:32:02Speaker 1: you're wondering, that's 8.30 in the morning is when that'll start,
- 1:32:05Speaker 1: is when that'll kick off. And you can hear it here, 8.30
- 1:32:07Speaker 1: Sunday morning on 1300 The Zone. D'Amico Ryan's before they're
- 1:32:11Speaker 1: getting out of town, was asked a few questions, including
- 1:32:17Speaker 1: what really changed defensively for his team last week to
- 1:32:22Speaker 1: sort of flip the script and get things going the
- 1:32:25Speaker 1: proper direction.
- 1:32:26Speaker 8: Defensively for us, it started just how our guys played.
- 1:32:30Speaker 8: They played, they repped our style the right way. I
- 1:32:32Speaker 8: thought we came out, we played physical. We did a
- 1:32:34Speaker 8: great job of stopping the run. Interior D lineman did
- 1:32:37Speaker 8: a really good job there in the run game. And
- 1:32:39Speaker 8: our guys flew around, looked like they were having fun
- 1:32:42Speaker 8: playing football. And so that was the thing that I saw.
- 1:32:46Speaker 8: So on third down, we were able to get off
- 1:32:48Speaker 8: the field on third down. They had a good drive
- 1:32:51Speaker 8: on us the first drive of the game. I think
- 1:32:54Speaker 8: after that, everyone settled in, and everybody just did their
- 1:32:58Speaker 8: job the right way. And it's nothing magical or anything
- 1:33:02Speaker 8: about it. Guys just played with intent. They did their
- 1:33:05Speaker 8: job the right way, and every guy made a play.
- 1:33:09Speaker 8: And that's how defensive football should look.
- 1:33:12Speaker 1: D'Amico also asked, did the film show– cj stroud being
- 1:33:17Speaker 1: in good command you know folks have asked about cj
- 1:33:20Speaker 1: stroud's capabilities as a pro quarterback and uh one of
- 1:33:25Speaker 1: the questions was did the film study or look into
- 1:33:28Speaker 1: the video show that stroud was in good command of.
- 1:33:32Speaker 8: The offense cj's he's done this all years you see
- 1:33:36Speaker 8: the command as i speak about that it's just Calm
- 1:33:39Speaker 8: in the offense.
- 1:33:40Speaker 2: Knowing where everyone is going to be.
- 1:33:42Speaker 8: Just being able to, one thing I saw just him
- 1:33:45Speaker 8: when we did get pressured, him being able to make
- 1:33:48Speaker 8: the hot throws to the right people when he had
- 1:33:51Speaker 8: to make those decisions in the tight moments. He did that,
- 1:33:54Speaker 8: seeing him again. escaped the pocket to make the play
- 1:33:58Speaker 8: to J. Noel there keeping his eyes downfield. The play
- 1:34:02Speaker 8: to Booty on their sideline. I mean, outstanding throw, outstanding
- 1:34:06Speaker 8: catch by Booty. So it's multiple plays within the game
- 1:34:09Speaker 8: of CJ just playing really great football right now. Doing
- 1:34:13Speaker 8: a great job of protecting the football but also dishing
- 1:34:16Speaker 8: the ball to multiple people. Really playing the play confident.
- 1:34:20Speaker 8: O-line is giving him time to operate on schedule and
- 1:34:23Speaker 8: he's doing a great job of just leading this offense.
- 1:34:26Speaker 8: And so we continue to lean in on what he's
- 1:34:29Speaker 8: doing well. And I can't say enough great things about
- 1:34:32Speaker 8: the season that he's having thus far.
- 1:34:35Speaker 1: And then there was the issue of the penalties. Some
- 1:34:40Speaker 1: of the longhorns have had to deal with. Several teams
- 1:34:43Speaker 1: that aren't hitting their peaks quite often are hurt by penalties.
- 1:34:48Speaker 1: And as a result of that, D'Amico was asked, about
- 1:34:52Speaker 1: that penalty problem how persistent is it what can they
- 1:34:55Speaker 1: do to get this thing flipped yeah we.
- 1:34:57Speaker 8: Have to get the penalties cleaned up it's not good
- 1:34:59Speaker 8: enough at all for us i mean we take a
- 1:35:01Speaker 8: touchdown off the board for from a holding penalty multiple
- 1:35:05Speaker 8: times we're again we're making ourselves start further back than
- 1:35:10Speaker 8: we would like to, right? Because these are things that
- 1:35:12Speaker 8: we can control from a penalty standpoint. So we got
- 1:35:14Speaker 8: to find a way to get it cleaned up. And
- 1:35:16Speaker 8: it starts, you got to play with better technique. And
- 1:35:18Speaker 8: that's the part that's disappointing. Like we can't hold guy.
- 1:35:22Speaker 8: You got to play clean, got to play clean. You
- 1:35:24Speaker 8: got to play with the proper technique.
- 1:35:26Speaker 2: You got to finish the right way.
- 1:35:27Speaker 8: So if we want to continue to progress as a team,
- 1:35:30Speaker 8: we got to clean up the penalties.
- 1:35:32Speaker 1: You can't hurt yourself. And again, they'll be in action,
- 1:35:36Speaker 1: the Texans will, on Sunday morning, 8.30, there in London
- 1:35:41Speaker 1: as they take on the Jacksonville Jaguars. Okay, coming up next,
- 1:35:46Speaker 1: we'll hear some more from Texas women's basketball coach, Vic Schaefer,
- 1:35:49Speaker 1: talking about the upcoming season, a very important part of
- 1:35:54Speaker 1: the preseason. That's right, preseason is important, especially when you're
- 1:35:58Speaker 1: playing the likes of UConn and the defending national champions
- 1:36:00Speaker 1: in UCLA. We'll hear him talk about that and other
- 1:36:02Speaker 1: things as well when we continue on this Yacht Rock
- 1:36:05Speaker 1: Wednesday on Sports Radio AM 13 Under the Zone and
- 1:36:08Speaker 1: where you can always listen. It's absolutely free of charge
- 1:36:11Speaker 1: right here on the iHeartRadio app. The one and only JT,
- 1:36:16Speaker 1: James Taylor. Mexico off that Gorilla LP. You know, Vic
- 1:36:23Speaker 1: Schaefer did not have to go to Mexico to recruit
- 1:36:27Speaker 1: some of this roster that is set to try to
- 1:36:30Speaker 1: make a third consecutive trip to the final four and
- 1:36:32Speaker 1: then go beyond just making the final four. Remember two
- 1:36:34Speaker 1: years ago, they reached it in Tampa, lost to South
- 1:36:37Speaker 1: Carolina last year, got there, lost to UCLA by seven points.
- 1:36:41Speaker 1: UCLA ended up winning the national championship and Texas is
- 1:36:45Speaker 1: going to play UCLA, a preseason game coming up a
- 1:36:48Speaker 1: week from Sunday at the HEB center in Cedar park.
- 1:36:54Speaker 1: And for folks who aren't into playing at Moody, I
- 1:36:55Speaker 1: think there's an event already that had already been scheduled
- 1:36:57Speaker 1: at Moody. Um, But it would give some people, I think,
- 1:37:02Speaker 1: on the north side, especially those living in Wilco, who
- 1:37:05Speaker 1: might not always feel compelled to drive all the way
- 1:37:08Speaker 1: down to Austin for the game, to see games. Although,
- 1:37:15Speaker 1: to their credit, the season ticket allotment has been sold
- 1:37:18Speaker 1: out for the first time ever for Texas women's basketball.
- 1:37:21Speaker 1: They averaged over 9,000 fans per game a year ago,
- 1:37:24Speaker 1: which is really cool. But anyway, the exhibition game, will
- 1:37:28Speaker 1: be in Cedar Park at the HEB Center.
- 1:37:30Speaker 2: And smashing pumpkins at Moody Center that night.
- 1:37:32Speaker 1: Well, there you go. And we'll have the game for
- 1:37:36Speaker 1: you on that Sunday afternoon here on 13 Under the Zone,
- 1:37:41Speaker 1: Texas against UCLA. But they're also playing UConn as well. So,
- 1:37:45Speaker 1: Vic Schaefer trying to get this group ready to roll.
- 1:37:49Speaker 1: And he... It was asked about Brea Cunningham and the
- 1:37:53Speaker 1: other forwards really having to fill in those big shoes
- 1:37:57Speaker 1: vacated by the graduation of Kyla Oldacre.
- 1:38:00Speaker 9: Brea started last year and obviously was a huge part
- 1:38:04Speaker 9: of our success. And again, I think she averaged 8.7
- 1:38:08Speaker 9: points and 5.6 rebounds, something like that, in basically 18
- 1:38:12Speaker 9: minutes a game.
- 1:38:13Speaker 2: Well, my job is to get 30 out of her.
- 1:38:16Speaker 9: And so to do that, you know, she'll have to
- 1:38:18Speaker 9: be in a little, she's going to have to be
- 1:38:20Speaker 9: in elite shape. And then she's going to have to learn,
- 1:38:25Speaker 9: you know, I've got to teach her better how to
- 1:38:28Speaker 9: stay out of foul trouble. that's it it's really not
- 1:38:31Speaker 9: rocket science at the end of the day and so
- 1:38:34Speaker 9: she's really skilled i mean she was the number two
- 1:38:36Speaker 9: player in the country coming out of high school um
- 1:38:39Speaker 9: i finished second tour and she went to arizona for
- 1:38:41Speaker 9: a couple years but so glad to have her back
- 1:38:44Speaker 9: and um just love the kid i mean i love
- 1:38:46Speaker 9: her like If I happen to get cornered in the
- 1:38:51Speaker 9: back alley somewhere, I want Brea Cunningham with me. I'm
- 1:38:55Speaker 9: just telling you, I love her toughness, her competitive spirit.
- 1:39:00Speaker 9: She'll get down there and fight with you a little bit.
- 1:39:01Speaker 9: And so I just got to teach her to fight
- 1:39:04Speaker 9: within some rules. You know, that's all. But, I mean,
- 1:39:07Speaker 9: she's a warrior. And so she's really skilled down there
- 1:39:12Speaker 9: in the low post. She does a great job. goes
- 1:39:15Speaker 9: against our guys every day who are taller than her,
- 1:39:18Speaker 9: longer than her, and she more than holds her own. So, um,
- 1:39:22Speaker 9: got to develop LaVisa, um, you know, a little bit and, uh,
- 1:39:27Speaker 9: and get her where she's in a position where she
- 1:39:29Speaker 9: can help us cause she's taller. Um, and she's got
- 1:39:32Speaker 9: a great frame. So, um, and we'll have a chance.
- 1:39:36Speaker 9: We can, we can move, um, some others around as well.
- 1:39:39Speaker 1: So, Next, he was asked about the recruitment of Jada
- 1:39:43Speaker 1: Clark and how all that one came about.
- 1:39:46Speaker 9: You know, Jada Clark is a veteran, really athletic, rebounds
- 1:39:52Speaker 9: it at a high level, average seven rebounds a game
- 1:39:56Speaker 9: over in Australia. Can really shoot it, but she's got
- 1:40:01Speaker 9: a great mid-range, too, and elevates well. She's got good
- 1:40:08Speaker 9: ball handling skills. She's the floor well. She's just a
- 1:40:11Speaker 9: really good player. And I think from our perspective, we
- 1:40:16Speaker 9: really wanted to add another offensive player, somebody that could
- 1:40:19Speaker 9: shoot it. And I think we've more than exceeded that.
- 1:40:25Speaker 9: So great kid. Man, great kid. Love her accent. But
- 1:40:33Speaker 9: really just, again, fits, you know, works hard. very cerebral,
- 1:40:39Speaker 9: asks questions, plays hard. She's improved defensively just in the
- 1:40:43Speaker 9: short time that she's been here, trying to embrace and
- 1:40:46Speaker 9: understand how we do things differently here versus what she
- 1:40:49Speaker 9: did there. So really excited about what she brings to
- 1:40:54Speaker 9: the table.
- 1:40:56Speaker 1: So there it is from Vic Schaefer as they continue
- 1:40:59Speaker 1: to do their work. All right, coming up, we will
- 1:41:02Speaker 1: be back to wrap up Today's edition of the program
- 1:41:06Speaker 1: gets you on to Bucky and BK, a Wednesday edition
- 1:41:09Speaker 1: of that. So that's coming up as we get ready
- 1:41:12Speaker 1: to close out today's edition of the program right here
- 1:41:15Speaker 1: on Sports Radio AM 13 Under the Zone and the
- 1:41:17Speaker 1: iHeartRadio app.
