- 0:05To the Daily Ripples podcast, where recovery principles meet our life of faith.
- 0:10Every day, a daily devotional is published online at dailyripples.com.
- 0:15And every day, someone is on this podcast talking about it.
- 0:19Today, it's me. It's me again. It's Cristi.
- 0:25I don't know how I ended up back here, but they trusted me enough to come back
- 0:30and do this alone. So welcome back.
- 0:33Today is July 21st, and we're talking about the gift of peace. Oh, what a gift.
- 0:41The stone. Peace is a gift that grows as I learn to surrender.
- 0:46Ripple 1. Practical. Today I will let go of the need to control everything.
- 0:52I will not chase emotional highs or get stuck in anxiety.
- 0:57I will choose steady actions and allow peace to build through trust, not pressure.
- 1:04Ripple 2 Spiritual The Father gives peace that I cannot create on my own.
- 1:09Jesus shows me a life surrendered in every moment.
- 1:14The Holy Spirit teaches me to live open and willing, receiving grace day by day.
- 1:21What begins as surrender in
- 1:23desperation becomes a steady faith that brings freedom and lasting peace.
- 1:31And then, of course, we'll say the prayer for later.
- 1:34So welcome back, and thank you for joining today and taking a moment out of
- 1:39your busy day, your busy life, to join me.
- 1:43So today we're talking about peace.
- 1:46This is one of my favorite things to actually talk about, to experience,
- 1:53because I lived a life at one point that was everything but peaceful.
- 2:00I am not an alcoholic, but I know that I was married to one prior to my current marriage.
- 2:11And that individual did not consider themselves one.
- 2:16However, every weekend, they would leave the home on a Saturday,
- 2:23go with friends, and wouldn't return until Sunday.
- 2:27And the time that they were away consisted of drinking.
- 2:33How do I know? Because when they returned, what they smelled like,
- 2:37their behavior, the whole nine.
- 2:40But that wasn't how the marriage began.
- 2:45So I wasn't aware of this part of their life.
- 2:50They hid it for quite a while. It wasn't until we moved to another state,
- 2:55actually, that it all came out.
- 2:58And the first time that they actually left on a Saturday, we had recently moved and they left.
- 3:07And when this would happen, there's no answering text messages,
- 3:11phone calls, any of that.
- 3:14So to me, oh my goodness, are you dead? Are you alive? Did something happen.
- 3:21But again, I'm new to a state. I didn't know what was going on.
- 3:25How could this be? And it wasn't until the next morning that I realized what the situation was.
- 3:34Promises were made. Promises were broken.
- 3:38So I started living the life of every Saturday, the anxiety within me would
- 3:46raise up because I knew what was coming.
- 3:51And so I would ask, are you going out tonight? Oh, I don't know.
- 3:56They would string me along knowing very well what they were going to do.
- 4:01So I would never enjoy my weekends because I just had such anxiety of going through that again.
- 4:10And plus I had a teenager in the home.
- 4:13So trying to control the situation, trying to keep my teenager sheltered from
- 4:21this behavior, all of those things,
- 4:24just took away my peace, like totally.
- 4:29But at some point, I had to decide this was not the life I wanted for myself.
- 4:36This was not the life I was meant to live.
- 4:40I could not change the other person. I could not control the other person.
- 4:45The only control that I had and the only change that could be made was within me.
- 4:54Yes, still went to church. Yes, I still had faith. Yes, I still prayed. Yes, I still cried out.
- 5:02But unless that person was willing to change, make amends, take accountability,
- 5:09realize that they were powerless, changes would not come.
- 5:15So I decided that I had to be the change that I wanted to see.
- 5:21So with age and time, peace has become a very important part of my life.
- 5:31And I will tell anyone, you have to want it bad enough for yourself. You have to.
- 5:38If you are living in chaos right now, and your life is constantly in turmoil,
- 5:46and as you look around you, family, friends, people, circumstances,
- 5:51job, everything just seems always in flux and always upside down.
- 5:57And you can't seem to find peace.
- 6:00Something has to change.
- 6:03But the only thing and the only person that you can control is you.
- 6:08Now, am I saying people, you need to go divorce. No, because I know many people,
- 6:15that have found peace and divorce was not the answer.
- 6:19They found other successful ways. So I'm not advocating that in the least.
- 6:24What I'm advocating is that you do the work to find peace within yourself,
- 6:31have faith in it, Rest in it,
- 6:35and don't allow anyone or anything to disrupt it,
- 6:41because some of it is within your control.
- 6:45And some of it comes from a higher power because life really does be lifing.
- 6:52Oh, my goodness, does it?
- 6:55But as you learn to surrender, as you learn to understand that you can't control
- 7:02everything and everyone,
- 7:05and all you can control is you, you'll begin to find that peace.
- 7:12That was the practical. Today, I will let go of the need to control everything. And that's hard for me.
- 7:18I am one that, look, if I'm a part of it, I'm going to have to try to control it some way, somehow.
- 7:25Like, are you kidding me? So it doesn't come easy for everyone to relinquish,
- 7:30control. It's a process.
- 7:34Stop chasing the emotional highs and the lows because that anxiety will always
- 7:40be there because you're always chasing to try to control things and keep it under control.
- 7:46So your anxiety is going to get the best of you, especially if things don't
- 7:51fall in line the way you're wanting them to or expect them to.
- 7:56And please know, every new day is a new challenge in searching and working towards that peace.
- 8:06Just because I'm no longer in that marriage doesn't mean I am totally 100% at peace.
- 8:14New marriage brought new challenges. It brought new scenarios that disrupted peace.
- 8:22But again, I had to work at it. I had to adjust, and I had to fine-tune my life,
- 8:30my inner me, to take control back, to get that peace.
- 8:35And part of that is talking to yourself, talking yourself off the ledge,
- 8:41if you will, encouraging yourself, speaking to yourself. You do that already.
- 8:48I know you know this. You talk to yourself already. You have inner thoughts.
- 8:54You have inner voices. You have gut reactions.
- 8:57Your gut is telling you, and then you'll say, I should have followed my gut.
- 9:01You're talking to yourself.
- 9:04So why not talk to yourself in such a constructive way?
- 9:09Sometimes when you're making those bad decisions, those impulsive decisions,
- 9:13Yeah, you talked yourself into it.
- 9:16So why not do the same, but in a constructive way to maintain a healthy way
- 9:26of living, a peaceful way of living?
- 9:30Take those voices, those inner thoughts, what you're already doing.
- 9:37Use it in a way that only makes you the better version of you.
- 9:43What a concept.
- 9:46Then the spiritual part of it, the Father gives peace that I cannot create on my own.
- 9:52Now, I'm sure a lot of us are familiar with Philippians 4, 6,
- 9:57and 7, but if you're not, let me read it to you.
- 10:02It says, Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication
- 10:08with thanksgiving, let your requests be made to God.
- 10:13And the peace of God, this is the one right here that I know speaks to us.
- 10:20And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts
- 10:26and your minds in Christ Jesus. Because here's the thing.
- 10:30I've been in situations where I know that I should have been falling apart.
- 10:36I know that I should have been in, you know, my mind. I should have been like,
- 10:43oh, my goodness, how can this be?
- 10:46Not sleeping, not eating, because when I get, you know, anxiety or depressed,
- 10:52I don't eat, I don't sleep, all those things.
- 10:55And I should have been in that state.
- 10:58But because of God, because he knew my heart, because I made my request known,
- 11:04and I made my request known with thanksgiving.
- 11:08I made my request known with desire, with I was longing and begging. I was pleading.
- 11:18It wasn't just another casual conversation with God. I was like,
- 11:22now, look, Lord, now, look, I know I come to you every day, all the time.
- 11:26It's me again. I know you're up there going, please. Another one.
- 11:31We just talked just a minute ago. Yep, it's me again.
- 11:35But this time, you know the deal, Lord. You know I'm struggling.
- 11:41And when I've done that, I have found situations where I was able to roll over,
- 11:49go to sleep, and was able to rest in it.
- 11:53Like, yeah, number one, I can't control it. It's going to be what it's going to be.
- 11:59Number two, I'm at peace. Whatever happens, happens.
- 12:04When you get to that point, let me tell you something.
- 12:08You have made it somewhere. You have really done something. That is growth.
- 12:15And it's huge. It is such a reward within itself, and if you're not there today,
- 12:22you can get there, and you will get there.
- 12:25Keep working at it. Keep having those conversations with yourself.
- 12:29Keep praying. Keep making those requests known. I didn't have it years ago.
- 12:35I fought. I cried. I screamed, I cussed, all of that, but with time,
- 12:44with patience, with perseverance.
- 12:47Now that peace, that peace that surpasses all, that peace that sometimes I pause and go, wait, what?
- 12:56Is this me? For real? That's where I am? You will surprise yourself.
- 13:03And even when I look back on that marriage, I sometimes go, how did I make it
- 13:08that long? How did I get through that?
- 13:11How did I not lose my mind?
- 13:14Now, some might say what I described was nothing.
- 13:19You're right. Compared to some, that was nothing.
- 13:24But giving the life that I had lived and what I was used to, that was a big deal to me.
- 13:29That was huge to me. And that was not something I wanted for myself.
- 13:35I don't know what your situation is today. Only you know.
- 13:39And when I say only you know, I'm talking about the quiet parts that you don't speak out loud,
- 13:46that nobody else knows about, those struggles that you don't talk about,
- 13:52that you're battling quietly within you.
- 13:56You will find peace from that as well.
- 14:00Keep fighting. Keep working at it.
- 14:04You too will be able to say that you have a piece that surpasses even your own understanding.
- 14:13It comes with age, it comes with time, but more importantly, it comes with hard work.
- 14:21But just like the title of this ripple, it is a gift.
- 14:26It truly is a gift.
- 14:30And it is my prayer that you will receive this gift today, not tomorrow.
- 14:40So speak to yourself, encourage yourself, talk to yourself.
- 14:47You already do it, so use it in a good way.
- 14:52Let us pray. Almighty Father, thank you for the gift of peace.
- 14:57Through your Holy Spirit, Help me live with open hands and a willing heart.
- 15:04Shape my life through the example of Jesus and grow in me a faith that leads
- 15:10to freedom and victory. Amen.
- 15:15Go in peace. Until next time, bye-bye.
