- 0:55Aaron: Welcome back.
- 0:56Aaron: This week on the Noble Dram, we're celebrating Mother's Day.
- 1:00Aaron: And we're doing it in a way I think that seems most reasonable.
- 1:04Aaron: We're going to make decisions like we did when we were little kids.
- 1:07Gavin: You know, like being dumb and making bad decisions and hoping mom doesn't find out.
- 1:12Aaron: Yeah, I don't think that's what I meant by this.
- 1:14Aaron: We're gonna play eeny meeny miny moe, because my mother told me to pick the very best one.
- 1:24Gavin: You know, I don't recall my mom ever allowing me to pick whiskey, but yeah.
- 1:29Aaron: I like where this is headed.
- 1:31Aaron: I okay, I can understand the confusion.
- 1:34Aaron: So let me explain.
- 1:36Aaron: Tonight's game, each of us have picked four bottles for the other one to taste.
- 1:43Aaron: We don't know which bottles we're actually tasting.
- 1:47Aaron: And we're going to.
- 1:49Aaron: I said we're gonna pick the very best one, but if you remember, any meeny miny mo doesn't end with my mother told me to pick the very best one.
- 1:57Aaron: It also ended with, and you are not it.
- 2:01Aaron: So realistically, we're not picking the best, we're eliminating the three worst to find the best.
- 2:08Aaron: So we're gonna do that.
- 2:10Aaron: First round, we're going to explore the nose.
- 2:13Aaron: We're only allowed to smell the whiskies and must eliminate one.
- 2:18Aaron: Next one, we get a single sip.
- 2:21Aaron: We're gonna explore the palette of the three, and we'll eliminate one.
- 2:27Aaron: And then finally, we'll delve fully in and really explore the finish and ultimately eliminate one more, leaving, as my mother would say, the very best one.
- 2:41Gavin: Oh, I love this.
- 2:42Gavin: So, any meeny miny mo it is.
- 2:44Gavin: So I had the privilege of going first.
- 2:49Gavin: By that, I mean I actually got to pick the whiskeys that Aaron will try.
- 2:55Aaron: Yeah, I'm a little nervous.
- 2:56Aaron: I'm a little nervous.
- 2:57Aaron: Uh what is what is normally the setup here is Gavin and I both have shared duties as who's in charge of the camera and the audio and all this kind of stuff.
- 3:07Aaron: And and what we realized is in order for me to not know what's in these glasses, I can't be in the room for any of that setup.
- 3:15Aaron: And so Gavin had to figure out how to do all of my jobs from a normal episode.
- 3:21Aaron: And here in a little bit, I'm going to have to figure out how to do all of Gavin's jobs.
- 3:25Aaron: But we have four whiskeys set in front of us.
- 3:27Aaron: Gavin, help me without seeing what they are.
- 3:32Aaron: Help me understand why these four whiskeys were picked.
- 3:37Aaron: These four whiskeys, you like that for you?
- 3:40Gavin: It's fancy.
- 3:40Gavin: These four whiskeys.
- 3:42Gavin: Um, thinking about Mother's Day and thinking about bad decisions, right?
- 3:46Gavin: Oh god.
- 3:47Gavin: None of these are fireball, are they?
- 3:48Gavin: They're not fireballs.
- 3:49Gavin: Okay, hold on.
- 3:50Gavin: That one dang it.
- 3:51Gavin: That would have been so fun.
- 3:52Gavin: I think I'd eliminated that one on the nose.
- 3:54Gavin: I'll be honest.
- 3:55Gavin: Right?
- 4:00Gavin: So, what goes best with whiskey?
- 4:04Gavin: Cigars.
- 4:05Gavin: Oh.
- 4:07Gavin: So the four whiskeys that you have poured out in these clean cairns are cigar blends or cigar malts.
- 4:17Gavin: Interesting, interesting.
- 4:20Gavin: Okay.
- 4:20Gavin: So, fun fact every single one of these whiskies has shown up on the back patio here throughout the last couple of years.
- 4:31Gavin: Uh-huh.
- 4:31Gavin: Okay.
- 4:32Gavin: So, so in theory, I've tried all of these before.
- 4:35Gavin: In theory.
- 4:36Gavin: Now, I don't know if you remember some of them.
- 4:39Gavin: Let's just be honest.
- 4:40Aaron: Just what I was thinking.
- 4:41Aaron: Uh, my memory might be hazy on some of them for sure.
- 4:44Aaron: So, round one.
- 4:48Aaron: Round one.
- 4:49Aaron: Rule is You get to sniff nose.
- 4:53Aaron: Um, since there's no numbers, I'm gonna I'm gonna s I'm gonna go left or right from you.
- 4:58Aaron: You're gonna go left or right.
- 4:59Aaron: All right.
- 5:00Aaron: Hold your notes up.
- 5:01Aaron: I don't want I don't want you to cheat.
- 5:02Aaron: All right.
- 5:04Gavin: All right, so tell the people kind of what you're getting on that first glass.
- 5:11Aaron: Yeah, so there's a there's a distinct leatheriness to it.
- 5:15Aaron: Okay.
- 5:15Aaron: It's got some spice to it though.
- 5:23Aaron: All right, number two.
- 5:25Aaron: It's actually a little bit softer, a little sweeter.
- 5:31Aaron: I get a little more of the vanilla kind of things going on there.
- 5:37Gavin: Okay.
- 5:42Aaron: Oh, oh, oh, oh.
- 5:44Aaron: That one is distinctly different than the other two.
- 5:47Aaron: Distinctly.
- 5:49Aaron: I like that one.
- 5:50Aaron: That one's got a maltiness to it, I think.
- 5:53Aaron: Very grain forward.
- 5:54Aaron: God, I so want to take sips.
- 5:56Aaron: This is gonna be hard.
- 5:57Aaron: I'm telling you, this is hard to do.
- 5:58Aaron: You're like, oh, you just smell them and you'll be done.
- 6:01Aaron: Man, that one's actually pretty light and floral.
- 6:09Gavin: Alright.
- 6:10Gavin: Okay, so you got a sniffer of all four.
- 6:14Aaron: I feel like I feel like it's cheating to go back and re-sniff, but I have to be honest, I really want to smell these two again just because um it's different.
- 6:22Aaron: Um, all right.
- 6:23Aaron: I must eliminate one.
- 6:25Aaron: One goes right now.
- 6:27Aaron: All right, so if this is if this is eeny, meanie, miny, and mo, I think I'm eliminating meanie.
- 6:37Aaron: You're eliminating meanie.
- 6:39Aaron: Yeah.
- 6:40Gavin: Well, that's a meanie of a decision.
- 6:44Aaron: I'll be honest, I mean, so so I really I'm really enjoying the the maltiness and the kind of the fruitiness here.
- 6:51Aaron: And I really liked the leather note.
- 6:53Aaron: Um this had I don't again, I don't know what it is, so I'm a little I'm so nervous to say, like, oh no, that's a bourbon.
- 7:01Aaron: That one had a more traditional bourbon sweetie kind of note to it.
- 7:07Gavin: So yeah, that you are eliminating this one right here.
- 7:11Gavin: Well, let me just take this one off your hands.
- 7:13Gavin: Son of a good.
- 7:14Gavin: I have nothing in in my glass.
- 7:17Aaron: So, would you like to know a little bit about tell us about it, and I'm gonna take sips of the other three.
- 7:23Aaron: Is that fair?
- 7:24Aaron: Yeah, that's fair.
- 7:25Aaron: Okay.
- 7:25Aaron: Oh man, that smells so good.
- 7:27Aaron: Can I just okay?
- 7:28Aaron: Is it fair to smell again as I take my sips?
- 7:30Aaron: Yeah, okay.
- 7:30Aaron: I think that's that's like I can repeat, I can repeat stuff from before, I just can't get ahead.
- 7:34Aaron: Yeah, but I get a single single snaff?
- 7:38Aaron: Single sniff.
- 7:39Aaron: Oh.
- 7:39Aaron: All right, god, when you come back to them, they're so different.
- 7:43Gavin: Yeah.
- 7:43Gavin: So, what I am sipping right now is the Joseph Magnus Cigar Blit.
- 7:53Gavin: Oh, this is a small batch bourbon.
- 7:57Gavin: The master blender, you might know the name, Nancy Fraley.
- 8:02Gavin: Nancy Fraley is also a part of Still Austin.
- 8:06Aaron: I was gonna say that just came up.
- 8:07Aaron: Oh.
- 8:10Gavin: That's tasty.
- 8:11Aaron: That's real tasty.
- 8:12Gavin: All right.
- 8:13Gavin: So this one, the Joseph Magnus, we're sitting at 110 proof.
- 8:20Gavin: I can't believe I eliminated that one.
- 8:22Aaron: It's like this sought-after chaste bottle.
- 8:25Gavin: Yes.
- 8:26Gavin: Uh, it is finished in Armanac, Sherry, and cognac casks.
- 8:30Gavin: This specific bottle is batch 372.
- 8:36Gavin: So, in the world of Joseph Magnus cigar blends, there are some batches that are like unattainable.
- 8:44Gavin: They go crazy on the secondary market.
- 8:49Aaron: Yeah, I'm assuming that is the elite of the elite of the elite that I just eliminated.
- 8:53Gavin: Oh, yeah, probably.
- 8:54Gavin: Um, actually, I'm not sure where this one stands in all of the batches.
- 8:58Gavin: That one's hot.
- 9:00Aaron: On the palette's got some kick to it.
- 9:02Gavin: Uh so the the just the banks know age statement, but they typically range anywhere between 11 and 20 years.
- 9:11Gavin: Cheers to this.
- 9:15Gavin: I'm glad I'm glad I got this to sit.
- 9:17Aaron: I'm gonna say I'm heading to I'm heading towards that bottle of sh plastic jug shin shin whiskey in the store.
- 9:25Aaron: I can see it coming.
- 9:28Gavin: All right.
- 9:29Gavin: So to keep it fair, I'm gonna say we outed on round one.
- 9:36Gavin: All right, so you were able to go back through, get a sniff of the three, and now you've been savoring a sip.
- 9:50Aaron: So I think the leatheriness continues on onto the palette.
- 9:53Aaron: Um dark leather tobacco kind of stuff showed up here.
- 9:58Aaron: This one, I am part of it is just kind of, you know, when you only get one sip, you do a lot of swirling, right?
- 10:04Aaron: Um white yelp on fire?
- 10:07Aaron: That one was a hotter one.
- 10:08Aaron: I liked it.
- 10:09Aaron: I liked the flavors to it, but it did have a lot of bite.
- 10:12Aaron: Uh, the the fourth one, if I was guessing of the three left, it's the lowest proof.
- 10:18Aaron: It was probably the lightest on the palette, partly maybe because I think we I think we peaked, peaked on number three, and number four was probably a step down.
- 10:29Aaron: And I that that comes through.
- 10:32Aaron: I'll also say the palette lost a lot of the sweetness that I liked on the nose.
- 10:36Aaron: So I for that reason I'm eliminating number four, which is Mo in our original Mo.
- 10:45Gavin: Okay, yep.
- 10:46Gavin: I I can I I smell what you're stepping in there.
- 10:49Gavin: Oh god.
- 10:50Gavin: Uh oh.
- 10:50Gavin: Number four I'm so nervous was Penelope Cigar Sessions Chapter One.
- 10:58Gavin: Sorry, Penelope.
- 11:00Gavin: So that one was actually tasted fairly recently on the back patio.
- 11:04Aaron: To be honest, I I personally kind of hit or miss on Penelope's.
- 11:09Aaron: Some I really, really like, some I'm pretty indifferent about.
- 11:13Aaron: Um I may I do you know the ABV?
- 11:17Aaron: Is it written down there?
- 11:19Aaron: Uh it is 101 proof.
- 11:21Aaron: It's not fair to ask if that's the lowest one yet, but I I have a feeling that that's probably on the bottom end of the spectrum.
- 11:31Aaron: All right, now I get to really delve, huh?
- 11:34Aaron: Two left.
- 11:35Aaron: All right.
- 11:36Aaron: Alright, come back.
- 11:38Aaron: Let's really get into this.
- 11:39Gavin: So in this round, we get to a little saver, a little bit.
- 11:43Aaron: I'm really gonna get back and forth.
- 11:44Aaron: There's a mint on this.
- 11:46Aaron: It's got a it's got a rye to it.
- 11:50Aaron: This one doesn't have that.
- 11:53Aaron: It's not it's not it's not there like it is in the first one.
- 11:58Aaron: While I'm doing this, say happy Mother's Day.
- 12:08Gavin: First and foremost.
- 12:10Gavin: Love you, mom.
- 12:11Gavin: Happy Mother's Day.
- 12:13Gavin: You know, when I was a wee lad, uh you know, whiskey in the bottle?
- 12:20Aaron: When you were a wee lad.
- 12:22Gavin: Uh happy Mother's Day, Mom.
- 12:24Gavin: Thank you so much for always being there.
- 12:26Gavin: This is a big shout out if you're actually watching the episode.
- 12:29Gavin: Yeah, this will be the test.
- 12:30Gavin: We're not gonna tell mom.
- 12:32Aaron: Yeah.
- 12:32Aaron: I'm not gonna tell my mom.
- 12:33Aaron: I know your mom watches.
- 12:35Aaron: I'm not gonna tell my mom.
- 12:36Aaron: And I'm just gonna wait to see when I get the phone call and be like, oh my god.
- 12:41Aaron: That's a horrible impression of my mother.
- 12:43Aaron: That is my mother's nothing like that.
- 12:45Gavin: Can I tell?
- 12:46Gavin: Can I tell a fun joke?
- 12:47Gavin: Or a fun joke?
- 12:48Gavin: And and the first time I ever met your mom, can I tell that story?
- 12:52Gavin: That was a TV series that went on forever.
- 12:55Aaron: Now I've met your mother.
- 12:56Gavin: Make it faster than that.
- 12:57Gavin: Uh, one of the first times I met Aaron's mom was here at their house.
- 13:01Gavin: Or at Aaron's house.
- 13:03Gavin: And uh actually, no, I guess it was the second time I met her.
- 13:06Gavin: The first time I met her, I was wearing a kilt.
- 13:09Gavin: Right?
- 13:10Gavin: Oh, yeah.
- 13:11Gavin: Um, at a Scottish festival.
- 13:12Gavin: Yeah, it was the Highland Games.
- 13:13Gavin: Yeah, it was the Highland Games.
- 13:14Aaron: I do recall that.
- 13:15Gavin: The second time I met her was here.
- 13:17Gavin: And I walked in, you know, saying hi, hugging people, kissing babies as you do.
- 13:24Gavin: And uh his mom goes, I tend to kiss hands and shake babies, but go on.
- 13:28Gavin: His mom goes, Man, I don't like recognize you with your pants on.
- 13:32Gavin: That does sound like the thing.
- 13:38Aaron: That didn't run all the way through in your head before it came out, did it?
- 13:41Gavin: Well, it didn't run all the way through my head either.
- 13:42Gavin: I didn't know where she was going with that.
- 13:44Gavin: But then I realized I was wearing a kilt the first time I met her.
- 13:47Gavin: She was always flirty with my friends.
- 13:49Gavin: Yeah, yeah, I get it.
- 13:50Gavin: So fun little tidbit about your mom.
- 13:55Aaron: Good lord.
- 13:56Aaron: I don't have anything inappropriate on your mom.
- 13:58Gavin: No, no, my mom's an angel.
- 14:02Aaron: Now we'll really know what she wants.
- 14:04Aaron: All right, so I mean, these are not the same.
- 14:09Aaron: I mean, these are distinctly different.
- 14:11Aaron: Um leather, tobacco, just a hint of smoke.
- 14:22Aaron: But there is a there is a mint that kind of flashes on the on the finish on it.
- 14:27Aaron: And so it it points to me as kind of a high-ride bourbon.
- 14:31Aaron: Um I'll be honest, I think I know which bottle that is.
- 14:39Gavin: You probably do.
- 14:41Aaron: Um, it's the other one that I'm really struggling with.
- 14:45Gavin: Is it intriguing?
- 14:47Gavin: Like, what are you getting on this one?
- 14:49Gavin: Like you said, leather and smoke.
- 14:52Aaron: What what what are you doing?
- 14:54Aaron: This one's got a fruitiness that shows up on the finish that um wasn't on the nose.
- 14:59Aaron: Um the palette actually had quite a bit of spice, and it's amazing how soft and smooth and fruity the finish gets to me.
- 15:08Aaron: Um, I to me, this is one glass of whiskey both on on the nose, on the palate, and on the finish, right?
- 15:16Aaron: It just reinforces builds on itself.
- 15:19Aaron: Right.
- 15:19Aaron: This one, on the other hand, kind of runs through a little bit wider range.
- 15:25Aaron: I will say the nose and the finish somewhat mimic each other.
- 15:29Aaron: It was the palate that really kind of shifted.
- 15:31Aaron: Okay.
- 15:31Aaron: I think that's that proof, right?
- 15:33Aaron: I I wonder if a couple drops of water might change that and and and bring it more in a cord.
- 15:39Aaron: Um I hate the way this sounds because you have to say I'm eliminating one, right?
- 15:47Aaron: Um, but the truth of the matter is I think they're both quite tasty.
- 15:50Aaron: I I'm eliminating what I believe to be Buzzard's Roost, double oaked cigar malt.
- 15:57Aaron: Um because I think I like the range and complexity that comes in number three.
- 16:03Aaron: All right.
- 16:04Aaron: So I I'm eliminating Enie.
- 16:07Aaron: You think that this is Buzzard's Roost?
- 16:12Gavin: Evidently, I got it wrong.
- 16:14Gavin: No, you didn't.
- 16:15Gavin: No.
- 16:15Gavin: You got it.
- 16:16Gavin: Look at that.
- 16:16Gavin: You got it.
- 16:17Gavin: And I didn't realize till we started filming that there's a bottle, not my, not, not the bottle that's here, but a bottle off camera that's like in his face.
- 16:24Gavin: No, no.
- 16:25Aaron: So when when you first said cigar malt, the first thing I did was look over on the on the I've got too much whiskey.
- 16:33Aaron: It's piled on the patch, right?
- 16:35Aaron: So I looked over and I was like, oh, the buzzard roost is still over there.
- 16:39Aaron: And I was like, well, I guess buzzerd roost isn't in this mix.
- 16:43Aaron: And then I took a sip and I was like, damned, if that that's gotta be buzzard, like it's exactly what it tastes like to me.
- 16:50Aaron: Um, yeah, and then it dawned on me, you have a bottle too.
- 16:55Aaron: And so it makes some sense.
- 16:57Gavin: This may be the first bottle that we've ever um tasted twice.
- 17:02Gavin: On air?
- 17:04Gavin: On air.
- 17:05Gavin: I don't remember 100%, so don't check me or check me on that.
- 17:09Aaron: No, no, somebody check him.
- 17:10Aaron: If he's wrong, I want you to lay into him.
- 17:12Gavin: Let him hear it, light me up.
- 17:14Gavin: So, buzzer, we had on a previous episode.
- 17:17Gavin: Um, when I started thinking about the cigar blends and cigar malts, I don't have too many on my shelf.
- 17:26Gavin: I had four, and one was the buzzer truist.
- 17:29Gavin: So you're right.
- 17:31Gavin: This is Buzzard Rust.
- 17:33Aaron: So here's where here was the fun for me.
- 17:36Aaron: My first time throwing the nose, I was pretty convinced this was scotch.
- 17:40Aaron: But the more I sit and sip it, I'm not as convinced as I was.
- 17:46Aaron: When I got initial thought, I was like, yep, that one's scotch.
- 17:49Aaron: And then I'm more delving into now.
- 17:52Aaron: I'm questioning whether or not that's scotch.
- 17:55Aaron: All right.
- 17:56Aaron: Well, so it's time to tell me what this is.
- 17:58Gavin: What this is.
- 17:59Gavin: So, first and foremost, you got the Buzzer Troost.
- 18:03Gavin: So that is a double oaked bourbon, 105 proof, age six years.
- 18:09Gavin: Mash pill, we do know on that.
- 18:11Gavin: It is 60% corn, 36% rye, and 4% malted barley.
- 18:15Aaron: I was afraid you were gonna say wheat, and that would look really silly.
- 18:18Aaron: But I get the bottle and talk about all the rye in it, and there's no rye in it.
- 18:21Aaron: Yeah, yeah.
- 18:22Aaron: All right.
- 18:23Aaron: I feel better.
- 18:23Aaron: I've redeemed myself.
- 18:25Gavin: What you chose as your top cigar malt or blend is the old elk cigar cut island blend.
- 18:37Gavin: It's finished in specialty.
- 18:41Gavin: It is a limited release crafted by master blender Melinda Maddox.
- 18:47Gavin: Okay.
- 18:48Gavin: Its base is a trio of signature spirits aged at a minimum of six years.
- 18:54Gavin: Then there's separate components.
- 18:56Gavin: Okay.
- 18:57Gavin: So component number one is high malt, straight bourbon, and finished in sherry for two years, and port for an additional six to ten months.
- 19:06Gavin: Okay.
- 19:07Gavin: Points to why I might have liked it.
- 19:09Gavin: Yep.
- 19:10Gavin: Component two is straight rye, whiskey finished in rum casks for eight months.
- 19:16Gavin: Okay.
- 19:17Gavin: Component three is straight wheat uh finished in Saturn casks for six months.
- 19:25Gavin: And we're clocking in at 111.7.
- 19:31Aaron: So it was a debate we had.
- 19:33Aaron: Was this the hottest one on the table?
- 19:36Aaron: Man, I feel like I actually held my own on this.
- 19:39Aaron: I'll be honest.
- 19:40Aaron: The soon as I went down the line and smoked.
- 19:42Aaron: No, sorry, sorry, sorry, sorry.
- 19:44Aaron: This is the hottest.
- 19:46Aaron: That's why I said this one.
- 19:47Gavin: Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 19:48Gavin: Yeah.
- 19:49Aaron: Uh not by much, I'm assuming.
- 19:52Gavin: No, because the Joseph Magnus was 110.
- 19:54Gavin: Yeah, they were you're like 1.7 proof.
- 19:58Aaron: I I think most of what I thought of was proof burn was just spending a little time swirling it around, right?
- 20:05Aaron: Like um, I think I just chose poorly to do that on the one that was one of the higher proofs.
- 20:11Aaron: Um yeah, I'll be honest, there was a great deal of nervousness when I came in and smelled down the line.
- 20:16Aaron: I was like, that's not as varied as I thought it was going to be.
- 20:20Aaron: Um, especially when you gave me the the the thought was or the the range was cigar blends because there are cigar blend scotches, and so in my head, I was like, Yeah, one of these will be a scotch and it will be easy to identify, but that was not the case.
- 20:39Gavin: Um, so yeah, I I forgot actually I do have um a scotch that is the cigar.
- 20:47Gavin: It's um I believe I have a Dalmore, yeah.
- 20:51Gavin: It's the Dalmore, that's right.
- 20:52Gavin: Yeah, cigar blend.
- 20:53Gavin: Yeah.
- 20:54Gavin: So congratulations.
- 20:56Gavin: All right, this was the new owner of Old Elk.
- 21:02Aaron: A new car.
- 21:03Aaron: No, no, the new car.
- 21:04Aaron: All right, so we got a little time before we want to take a break.
- 21:08Aaron: Uh, one of the things we started the episode, you were talking about um making bad decisions and hoping mom won't find out.
- 21:20Aaron: Um, I'm assuming that is a universal theme, especially amongst us boys.
- 21:26Aaron: Right?
- 21:27Aaron: Um, so I don't want to rat you out in front of your mother in case she does happen to watch.
- 21:34Aaron: So I did you don't have to divulge a secret.
- 21:36Aaron: But was there one of those things where you tried to cover something up and either it it didn't work and mom found out anyways, or maybe to this day she doesn't know, and you're gonna come clean right here on air?
- 21:48Gavin: Well, mother, I feel like you need to sit down for a minute.
- 21:53Gavin: Come in closer, mom.
- 21:54Gavin: Yeah, or have a have a private moment.
- 21:56Gavin: I feel like we need to have a conversation.
- 21:59Gavin: We both know that I'm a perfect angel and always have been.
- 22:04Gavin: Yeah.
- 22:05Gavin: Never made a mistake once in my life.
- 22:06Gavin: Never made a mistake.
- 22:08Gavin: Don't tell anyone else, right?
- 22:12Aaron: But no, there's really nothing that I would hide from my mother.
- 22:16Aaron: My dad used to say he made a mistake once when he thought he was wrong.
- 22:21Aaron: Uh you never tried to hide anything, even if she caught it.
- 22:27Aaron: Never?
- 22:28Aaron: Nothing.
- 22:29Aaron: I was such a you didn't have a pack of cigarettes hidden in the house somewhere.
- 22:33Aaron: You didn't zip-tie part of the car back together after you ran it into something.
- 22:38Aaron: No, no.
- 22:39Aaron: I was a perfect.
- 22:41Aaron: You went down and snuck food out of the fridge one night and she couldn't figure out what happened to things.
- 22:47Aaron: Like, nothing?
- 22:48Aaron: Nope.
- 22:48Aaron: I don't believe that shit.
- 22:49Gavin: Still today, when you know, being married and having children, when we come in late at night to my mom's house, I still go knock on her bedroom door and I'm like, hey, we're home.
- 23:01Gavin: Like, still today.
- 23:04Aaron: Check the facts.
- 23:05Aaron: No, this is weird.
- 23:06Aaron: This is weird.
- 23:07Aaron: Like, I still check in.
- 23:08Aaron: I don't I don't know as if we can be friends anymore.
- 23:10Aaron: I didn't know.
- 23:11Aaron: I didn't know Mr.
- 23:12Aaron: Goody Two Shoes was on the on the episode.
- 23:15Gavin: And that's why I chose the vices cigars and whiskey.
- 23:20Gavin: All right.
- 23:21Aaron: You're gonna need to bear with us for a minute because we're gonna have to reset all of this, right?
- 23:25Aaron: I gotta get bottles out, gotta get Gavin out of here, blindfold him, soundproof room, the whole bit, right?
- 23:30Aaron: Um, but while we convert everything over, check out a message.
- 23:38Aaron: What if your next four actually meant something?
- 23:45Aaron: Not just a good guide, but doing real good.
- 23:50Aaron: This is pouring forward.
- 23:54Gavin: Where whiskey meets purpose.
- 23:56Gavin: Where we spotlight real people and real stories.
- 24:00Gavin: And show up when it really counts.
- 24:05Gavin: No middleman, no fluff, just impacts.
- 24:10Aaron: Here at the Noble Dram, we believe that whiskey is more than just what's in the glass.
- 24:15Gavin: It's about the people that you share it with.
- 24:17Gavin: If that is, head over to thenobledram.com and find out how you can pour it forward.
- 24:25Aaron: Enjoy a dream and be noble.
- 24:27Aaron: Through the magic of editing, what was just a few short seconds for you took us several minutes to get reset, and I think we are now ready for round two.
- 24:49Aaron: Round?
- 24:50Gavin: Is it my turn?
- 24:51Gavin: It is your turn.
- 24:52Gavin: I have it's your favorite round.
- 24:53Gavin: I've been waiting.
- 24:54Gavin: I've been waiting.
- 24:54Aaron: I have all night.
- 24:55Aaron: You got so antsy you started drinking the throwaways from the last round.
- 24:59Aaron: I did.
- 24:59Aaron: I mean, they were pretty tasty throwaways.
- 25:02Gavin: Yeah, I get you.
- 25:02Gavin: I mean, some expensive throwaways.
- 25:04Gavin: Uh, but that's okay.
- 25:07Aaron: We'll we'll we'll discuss further.
- 25:09Gavin: All right, all right.
- 25:09Gavin: I'm gonna cleanse my palate over here.
- 25:10Gavin: You ready?
- 25:12Aaron: Yeah, you ready?
- 25:12Aaron: All right, so I was posed with the same dilemma for Mother's Day, four whiskeys, Gavin blind tasting.
- 25:22Aaron: And so I began to think about things that I want.
- 25:26Aaron: And and I Mother's Day is synonymous with chocolates and flowers and all the things that you buy for Mother.
- 25:32Aaron: And so I started thinking about flowers, and that got me kind of down a rabbit hole, as I tend to get when I grab onto the internet.
- 25:38Aaron: And I started thinking, well, they sell flowers.
- 25:41Gavin: Oh, and you grab onto the internet, yeah.
- 25:44Aaron: Well, yeah, you just grab and it takes you wherever it goes, right?
- 25:47Aaron: Like you don't, you're not, you're not in charge, you're not in charge.
- 25:49Aaron: So they sell flowers by the dozen.
- 25:54Aaron: Yep.
- 25:55Aaron: And so I thought, perfect, that will be my theme.
- 25:58Aaron: This is the dirty dozen.
- 26:00Aaron: These are, I gotta be careful not to knock things over.
- 26:03Aaron: These are all 12-year-old scotches.
- 26:08Aaron: So you don't have to guess are they bourbons or not?
- 26:12Aaron: These are all scotches.
- 26:14Aaron: Okay, all right, all 12 years old.
- 26:16Aaron: So, of course, being being me, all right, I started delving down the rabbit hole.
- 26:21Aaron: But I think I've made you wait long enough.
- 26:24Aaron: I'm gonna let you begin sniffing.
- 26:26Aaron: Okay.
- 26:27Aaron: Um, remember, nose only, you only let me go through once.
- 26:32Aaron: So I'm gonna my my recommendation pay a lot of attention to the first one because by the time you get to the last one, it's hard to remember the smell of the first one.
- 26:42Gavin: Yeah, for real.
- 26:43Aaron: And and while you do that, I want to give you some more dozen tidbits.
- 26:47Aaron: A dozen tidbits, all right.
- 26:48Aaron: Well, no, no, it's like it's like two tidbits, but it's about a dozen.
- 26:52Gavin: Okay, all right.
- 26:53Gavin: Here we go.
- 26:54Gavin: Starting stage left, your left.
- 26:57Gavin: I'm gonna go over.
- 26:58Gavin: We've started over here.
- 26:59Aaron: Okay.
- 26:59Aaron: And you know I'm a little different.
- 27:01Aaron: I thought you'd do this, and so I set you up for dozen.
- 27:04Aaron: I'm teasing.
- 27:05Aaron: All right, we'll go here.
- 27:06Aaron: All right, so for those at home, I did some digging.
- 27:09Aaron: I was like, why does dozen mean twelve?
- 27:11Aaron: All right, that's a fair question to ask.
- 27:13Aaron: So I began looking.
- 27:15Aaron: The root of the word dozen comes from the Latin, which was duo decim.
- 27:22Aaron: Duo meaning two, and decim meaning and ten.
- 27:27Aaron: So two and ten makes twelve.
- 27:31Aaron: See?
- 27:32Aaron: I thought 13.
- 27:33Aaron: No, no, this is why I'm in charge of the math right here.
- 27:35Aaron: Oh, well, what happened to your baker does?
- 27:37Aaron: So then I you get down rabbit holes.
- 27:40Aaron: This is how the internet works.
- 27:42Aaron: I found out there is a game called Dozens in which two guys stand and hurl insults back and forth at each other, and the crowd that surrounds them then hoops and hollers and cheers to let them know who's winning.
- 27:59Aaron: The most quintessential form of this is yo mama jokes.
- 28:06Aaron: And I thought, how great is this that the dozen game is being played on this stage for Mother's Day?
- 28:13Aaron: So I'd like to officially rename Sunday.
- 28:17Aaron: It's no longer Mother's Day, it's Yo Mama Day.
- 28:20Aaron: Yo mama's day.
- 28:21Aaron: Yo, mama's day.
- 28:22Aaron: So, all right, tell us what you've been getting on the nose here so far.
- 28:27Gavin: This is very sweet, buttery, short bread, just the quintessential.
- 28:34Gavin: I want this like after dessert or like after dinner, after eating a steak or fish and chips, like this is just amazing.
- 28:45Gavin: This one, I felt like had a little bit more floral-y note to it.
- 28:51Gavin: Um, still very delicious, at least on the nose.
- 28:54Gavin: My nose thought it was delicious.
- 28:56Gavin: That's right.
- 28:57Aaron: I don't know if delicious is the right word.
- 28:58Aaron: It's in my nose.
- 28:59Aaron: Can you say you smell delicious?
- 29:01Aaron: Yeah, I think you can.
- 29:02Aaron: I feel like that'd get you punched on an elevator.
- 29:05Aaron: Probably.
- 29:06Aaron: And kicked out of a venue somewhere.
- 29:09Aaron: I'm gonna do that next time I find myself on an elevator with somebody like, oh, you smell delicious.
- 29:14Aaron: Oh I feel like we're going down a rabbit hole.
- 29:19Aaron: Better to be a stranger at the elevator than the guy next to you at the urinal.
- 29:23Aaron: All right, one more glass.
- 29:26Aaron: Come on.
- 29:27Gavin: This one before I get myself in more trouble.
- 29:29Gavin: Very grain forward.
- 29:31Gavin: It's almost like um there's a bit of a like bread note to it.
- 29:37Gavin: Okay um, not quite as punchy as number two for me.
- 29:45Gavin: Uh, but you know, it's not bad.
- 29:49Aaron: Okay, not bad.
- 29:51Aaron: That's the kind of ringing endorsement the distiller wants to hear out of this.
- 29:54Aaron: Not bad.
- 29:55Aaron: It's like, oh man, I finally made it.
- 29:57Aaron: I'm I'm finally on the Noble Drive podcast.
- 29:59Gavin: It's probably like my favorite scotch.
- 30:02Aaron: Finally, finally, they're gonna tell me what they think in his comment.
- 30:05Aaron: Yeah, not bad.
- 30:06Aaron: Not bad.
- 30:06Aaron: Um, I'm kind of excited because you've established the precedent that whatever you throw away, I get to drink.
- 30:15Aaron: Yeah, and as luck would have it, I picked ones that I I know I like too.
- 30:19Aaron: So what if I don't please don't spit in them or anything?
- 30:25Gavin: All right.
- 30:26Gavin: Um, this one uh a little bit more fruit, a little dark fruit, I would say.
- 30:32Gavin: Maybe a little plum cherry note to that one.
- 30:38Gavin: Um nose alone.
- 30:41Gavin: Nose alone.
- 30:42Gavin: One's got to go.
- 30:44Gavin: Not number one, not number two, number three.
- 30:47Gavin: Number three.
- 30:48Aaron: Number three is out.
- 30:49Aaron: Number three is out.
- 30:50Aaron: This is one of my favorites.
- 30:51Aaron: Actually, I'll be honest.
- 30:53Aaron: I've never had this one before.
- 30:54Aaron: This was one I actually had to open.
- 30:56Aaron: Okay.
- 30:56Aaron: Um, I've had other stuff from them, but not the 12-year.
- 31:00Aaron: So this was kind of cool.
- 31:01Aaron: Um, please tell me a bit about this one.
- 31:04Aaron: Well, no, so I want I want you to feel free to go ahead and start sipping.
- 31:08Aaron: We're gonna keep things moving along.
- 31:09Aaron: But what you eliminated, my friend, uh, you eliminated Kilcaron 12-year.
- 31:18Aaron: So, those who are not familiar with Kilcaron, Kilcaron is a Campletown Scotch.
- 31:24Aaron: This one clocks in at 46% ABV, aged in 70% ex bourbon, 30% ex sherry barrels.
- 31:34Aaron: This one, lightly peated, clocking in at an MSRP of $105 a bottle.
- 31:42Aaron: Um this, the Kilcarin distillery was the was the counter move to the SWA telling Campbell Town that you can't remain your own region if you only have two distilleries.
- 31:58Aaron: And so, in a joint venture between Springbank and Glen Scotia, they opened the Kilcarin distillery there in town, too.
- 32:06Aaron: So it is actually partially owned by the other distilleries in town, just so they can have three distilleries stick it to them, uh, and and maintain their Campbelltown region.
- 32:17Aaron: And yeah, I I'm not saying that any of the other ones are bad.
- 32:22Aaron: I'm just really pleased that this is the one you eliminated.
- 32:24Gavin: No, it I'm I want to taste that one here pretty soon.
- 32:29Aaron: Um, shit out of luck now.
- 32:32Aaron: Oh man.
- 32:33Aaron: Oh man.
- 32:41Aaron: Sorry, I'm just enjoying this one.
- 32:44Aaron: Um the smoke and peat doesn't hit the nose, but it's on the palate.
- 32:50Aaron: It's all right.
- 32:51Aaron: It's all right.
- 32:52Aaron: All right.
- 32:53Aaron: I'll put it back up there and you can have a sit there.
- 32:54Aaron: I'm gonna I'm gonna I'm gonna steal poles off of whatever you eliminate next.
- 32:59Aaron: All right, did you try this one yet?
- 33:01Aaron: You still gonna recording them?
- 33:02Aaron: No, yeah.
- 33:02Aaron: All right, tell me, tell me, tell tell us, tell us what you got on one and two.
- 33:06Gavin: One, um not quite so buttery and sweet on the palate, like I felt like I got on the nose.
- 33:14Gavin: Okay.
- 33:14Gavin: Um, still delicious, just not quite as punchy there.
- 33:19Gavin: Uh number two, feel like it's still kind of florally um that quintessential scotch.
- 33:28Gavin: Um slight hotness to it.
- 33:32Gavin: Just swirling it around a bit.
- 33:34Gavin: Slight hotness.
- 33:35Aaron: That's how I've always described myself.
- 33:36Aaron: Me too.
- 33:37Aaron: You've described you described me as slight hotness?
- 33:40Aaron: Yeah, it's that's awkward now.
- 33:42Aaron: I mean it was bad enough when I did it.
- 33:44Aaron: Come on, come on now.
- 33:46Aaron: I mean, very slight.
- 33:47Aaron: Handsome fella you.
- 33:49Aaron: Very slight.
- 33:51Gavin: All right.
- 33:52Gavin: This one, um, going back on the sniffer first.
- 33:59Aaron: Turn that back up there.
- 34:04Gavin: There's a bit of a more of a grassy uh like hay note.
- 34:10Gavin: Interesting.
- 34:12Gavin: Not quite so not quite interesting.
- 34:16Gavin: Well I can see how you where you were going with that.
- 34:20Gavin: Um not like a peaty, uh, but more of like um, not a dusty barn, but like a barn that has like wet hay.
- 34:31Gavin: Okay.
- 34:34Aaron: Scottish rain.
- 34:36Aaron: Okay, yeah, but makes sense.
- 34:38Aaron: We're doing it scotch, right?
- 34:39Aaron: Yeah.
- 34:40Aaron: So all right, so we get that point.
- 34:42Aaron: You gotta eliminate one.
- 34:43Aaron: I am going to eliminate number two.
- 34:48Gavin: Number two! Yeah.
- 34:49Gavin: Oh my god.
- 34:50Gavin: That was that was tough.
- 34:51Gavin: Oh my god.
- 34:52Gavin: Do you want to venture a guess at what number two is?
- 34:54Aaron: No, I'm it I don't want to embarrass myself, but I'm gonna you are gonna be shocked when you hear what number two is.
- 35:00Gavin: Is this um I am gonna be is this the Balvini?
- 35:06Aaron: It's the Balvini Doublewood 12 year.
- 35:09Gavin: Yeah, yeah.
- 35:11Aaron: Um, yeah, no, no, I mean I had a feeling.
- 35:14Aaron: I had a feeling.
- 35:14Aaron: All right, so so you're down at one and four, but let me talk a little bit about Belvini.
- 35:20Aaron: Balvini doublewood, named doublewood because it's aged in two woods, both American oak and European sherried oak.
- 35:27Aaron: Um, MSRP on that one, $70, clocks in at 43% ABV.
- 35:35Aaron: So you've eliminated so far the 46 and the 43.
- 35:39Aaron: Um, you have eliminated the two most expensive bottles on the table.
- 35:45Aaron: Uh, we are now down to the final two.
- 35:48Aaron: So I'm gonna let I'm gonna let you dig into these two.
- 35:51Gavin: I have to say, this is my house, Scott.
- 35:54Aaron: I I fully expected you to know that one, yeah, and all I really wanted was it to throw you off.
- 36:04Aaron: Yeah.
- 36:04Aaron: Yeah, so this pleases me to no end.
- 36:06Gavin: So I just have to say this is one of my absolute favorites, but I felt like there's enough difference between these two on the ends.
- 36:15Aaron: It is the inherent fun of a truly blind tasting, is that you there is no pre preconceived notion about the distillery, about the bottle, about whatever, right?
- 36:25Aaron: Um, what whether it's a good or a bad, right?
- 36:29Aaron: Sometimes I'm like, oh, I I love everything from that distillery.
- 36:32Aaron: And it and you do intrinsically just kind of give it a couple more points when you score stuff out.
- 36:37Aaron: So, all right, you've got number one, number four.
- 36:39Aaron: While you taste those, it is my turn to tell my lovely mother that she is the greatest thing that has ever happened to anybody ever on this planet, and I'm eternally in her debt for being so awesome.
- 36:53Aaron: I I I had to take whatever score you gave your mom and I had to go one more.
- 36:57Aaron: I it's just sorry, it's the perk of going second.
- 37:00Gavin: And I will say the next time I see you, I may not be wearing pants.
- 37:04Aaron: Oh, I know.
- 37:06Aaron: Nauseating.
- 37:07Aaron: Oh, that's tough for me.
- 37:10Aaron: All right, so while you delve into this, uh, what I will say is uh, have you seen the movie Dirty Dozen?
- 37:22Gavin: Uh it's been a long time.
- 37:25Aaron: Me too.
- 37:25Aaron: I was hoping you'd be able to explain it to everybody.
- 37:27Aaron: Um, I so one, 12 years old seems to be, you know, no, keep drinking, keep drinking.
- 37:35Gavin: No, no, I'm just intrigued.
- 37:36Gavin: So I'm intrigued.
- 37:37Aaron: 12 years old seems to be the kind of that sweet spot amongst scotches.
- 37:41Aaron: Um, there were a lot of 12-year-olds to pick from, right?
- 37:46Aaron: Um, so part of the challenge here was giving something that was like, oh, wait, maybe this is one you won't recognize.
- 37:53Aaron: I like the idea of throwing in the Balvini, right?
- 37:56Aaron: That obviously gave you something you you feel like you should absolutely recognize, right?
- 38:02Aaron: Um yeah, that seems to be weather-wise, that seems to be a sweet spot, right?
- 38:08Aaron: By comparison, I would think that in the in the bourbon world, the six to eight year seems to be the sweet spot, right?
- 38:18Aaron: Just because of climate and and right and barreling.
- 38:21Aaron: Um, but you get you look across the shelves, how much stuff is in the six to eight year range in the bourbon world, and then you go take a look on your Scotch aisle.
- 38:31Aaron: That I'll say 10 to 15, right?
- 38:33Aaron: Window in Scotch seems to be that same thing, like 12 being kind of almost the middle.
- 38:38Aaron: Um, but yeah, this was a lot of fun picking these.
- 38:41Aaron: I'm sure you were having fun taste testing them before.
- 38:44Aaron: No, I didn't.
- 38:45Aaron: So, I mean, obviously, three of the four bottles were open, so I've had them before.
- 38:50Aaron: Um with the exception of the Kilcairn, which we opened this time.
- 38:55Aaron: This is the only bottle of Kilcairn I've ever owned.
- 38:57Aaron: Every one of the rest of these, this is not my first bottle I've owned of them, right?
- 39:01Aaron: It's something that you're like, oh, that's good.
- 39:03Aaron: That's 12 years tends to be a sweet spot and price point, right?
- 39:09Aaron: 12-year whiskies aren't outrageously expensive, but yet at the same time aren't what I would consider to be cheap in the world of scotches.
- 39:23Aaron: Um, in general, there's always outliers, right?
- 39:26Aaron: For sure.
- 39:27Gavin: All right, walk us through what you're getting here.
- 39:29Gavin: Well, first and foremost, I have a question for you.
- 39:31Gavin: Okay.
- 39:32Gavin: So you asked me a question about um like, did my mom was there something that I did that I've never confessed to my mom?
- 39:45Gavin: Right.
- 39:45Aaron: Right.
- 39:46Aaron: It's not exactly how I worded it, but similar.
- 39:49Aaron: Made bad decisions and hope she didn't find out that's kind of my so I have a question that uh I'm gonna pose to you.
- 39:55Gavin: Okay.
- 39:55Gavin: Remember everything about this makes me nervous.
- 39:58Gavin: Remember when mom said just because it's expensive doesn't mean it's better.
- 40:06Gavin: Yeah.
- 40:08Gavin: Yeah.
- 40:09Aaron: So have you ever fallen victim to a specific bottle of whiskey that you bought just because of the chase and Magnus Cigar Blend turns out to not be worth the prize tag for me.
- 40:25Aaron: For you, for you, yeah.
- 40:26Aaron: No, I I mean, I think we all do this.
- 40:28Aaron: Um, it's it's easy to get caught up in the internet hype, right?
- 40:32Aaron: Um, everyone's talking about how great it is.
- 40:35Aaron: Oh, you gotta get one of these.
- 40:36Aaron: Um, and one of the problems that you often have is every bottle you buy is somewhat of a flyer, right?
- 40:43Aaron: You're you're taking past experiences with that distillery or that style and saying, okay, hopefully this one turns out.
- 40:51Aaron: And sometimes, sometimes you're like, oh my God, I didn't realize how good this was going to be when I bought it.
- 40:58Aaron: And then you immediately race back to the store and buy another bottle.
- 41:02Aaron: Um, sometimes you get home and you try and you're like, God, I would I would love there to be a return policy at my local bottle shop that I could take it back.
- 41:12Aaron: Um, yeah.
- 41:13Gavin: That's when you just give it away to friends.
- 41:15Aaron: No, and and so there is certainly a there is certainly a couple bottles that have made repeated appearances on the patio just in the effort to get them to go away.
- 41:26Aaron: Um, probably the one that we joke about the most on the patio.
- 41:30Aaron: Um, I I have learned that I'm not a big Texas whiskey guy.
- 41:36Aaron: That's not that's not to say they're not good, they're just not for me.
- 41:42Gavin: What state do we live in?
- 41:43Aaron: We live in Texas.
- 41:44Aaron: Oh.
- 41:44Aaron: Live in Texas.
- 41:45Aaron: I'm in the process of figuring out how to move closer to where they make scotch because I like a lot of scotch.
- 41:53Aaron: Um, no, and and this is where you have to be careful.
- 41:56Aaron: Whenever we talk whiskey, I think it's very easy to use phrases like it's not good or it's great, right?
- 42:02Aaron: Like we put them in R terms.
- 42:04Aaron: But the truth of the matter is, I like it, I don't like it, is probably a far more accurate way to describe whiskey than it's good or bad, right?
- 42:11Aaron: For me, I don't tend to enjoy heavily oaked whiskeys.
- 42:18Aaron: Hot, warm climates, oak faster.
- 42:22Aaron: Anything with age in Texas tends to be overly oaky for me, right?
- 42:27Aaron: Um, there are some distilleries that I think have done a nice job of trying to mitigate what I would say is that issue, right?
- 42:36Aaron: Other people really enjoy that and they lean into whiskeys that have it.
- 42:41Aaron: And so that's why I have to be careful.
- 42:43Aaron: But I what I will say is um I I I did get suckered, and I and I I use the word suckered because I was in a spot where I was told, well, if you want it, I have it.
- 42:52Aaron: And I'm like, well, now I can't say no.
- 42:54Aaron: Um, because somebody's recommended it to me, and I told them I'm not positive I was gonna like it, but I bought the bottle anyways.
- 43:01Aaron: Um I don't I don't want to talk trash, but we live in a state full of ranchers and cowboys, and this bourbon is for those kinds of guys, right?
- 43:13Aaron: Um, and it is it was an expensive bottle, $200 plus, right?
- 43:21Aaron: It was a splurge bottle, and I brought it home, and it almost immediately was listed as one of the lowest ranking bottles in my room, right?
- 43:32Aaron: Um way less than bottles I had spent a fraction of that cost on.
- 43:36Aaron: So, yes, is there bottles that I've overspent for sure?
- 43:40Aaron: Are there also bottles in this room that I've stumbled into and I was like, I can't believe that that bottle was only $45?
- 43:47Aaron: Like, that's crazy to me.
- 43:49Aaron: For sure.
- 43:50Aaron: For sure.
- 43:51Aaron: So I think it goes both ways.
- 43:52Gavin: Yeah, there's a bottle on my shelf that costs 25 bucks, and I would recommend that bottle to Just about anyone.
- 44:02Aaron: Like if they I mean, we're still an episode that was limited to 25 bucks.
- 44:06Aaron: The bottle you brought couldn't have been it.
- 44:09Aaron: It was not that good.
- 44:10Aaron: Sorry.
- 44:11Aaron: I didn't like it that much.
- 44:13Aaron: I did, I just broke my own rule.
- 44:15Gavin: Uh yeah, no, there's there's one that was not that.
- 44:18Gavin: I mean, I guess it's about 29 bucks.
- 44:20Gavin: Uh rounding it's a little bit more.
- 44:23Gavin: But uh I was recently asked, like, hey, what should I have on my shelf?
- 44:29Gavin: Like, don't have a lot, but what should I have on there?
- 44:32Gavin: And I was like, get this one bottle.
- 44:35Gavin: Doesn't break the bank.
- 44:37Gavin: It's an easy I mean it's it's hire proof, but it's it's easy to find.
- 44:41Gavin: It's actually more on the bottom shelf in most places these days.
- 44:45Gavin: And I think it is delicious.
- 44:48Aaron: So, yeah, I think that'll be an episode we're gonna do coming up, right?
- 44:51Aaron: Where we talk about um, so I'm I'm in sales.
- 44:54Aaron: We talk about the one-minute pits, the five-minute pits, the the 30 minutes, the one hour, right?
- 44:59Aaron: So the the question is if your liquor cabinet only had two bottles, or it only had six bottles, or it only had 12 bottles, or it only had 20 bottles, like which ones are they?
- 45:08Aaron: And so I think that changes, right?
- 45:10Aaron: Obviously, as your collection size changes, right?
- 45:12Aaron: Um, but yeah, I have the idea of a budget-friendly, good sipper.
- 45:19Aaron: I how could you not want something like that in your collection?
- 45:22Aaron: So um, we will explore further in depth in the coming future.
- 45:26Aaron: All right, you have stretched this out as long as possible trying to decide.
- 45:31Aaron: Uh one of these is obviously the better of the two.
- 45:34Gavin: Uh-huh.
- 45:34Gavin: Do you know which one?
- 45:36Aaron: But in fairness, I know which one they are.
- 45:38Aaron: So um, and then do we I of all the ones that were up here, the one I was most excited about, you eliminated in the very first one.
- 45:46Aaron: So I feel like we leveled out, right?
- 45:47Aaron: Between the two of them.
- 45:49Gavin: All right, all right.
- 45:49Aaron: So walk us through what you're getting across the full thing.
- 45:53Aaron: Nose palette finish on the on both nose palette finish.
- 45:56Gavin: I think the nose on this one, very buttery, um, short bread, kind of that, it's just very sweet, like I want it after like a savory meal.
- 46:08Gavin: Dessertish.
- 46:08Gavin: Dessertish.
- 46:09Gavin: Okay, yeah.
- 46:10Aaron: I'm surprised to hear that.
- 46:12Gavin: Yeah.
- 46:12Gavin: Um, this one, there's a bit more punch to it.
- 46:16Gavin: If I could guess higher proof than most, if not all four.
- 46:25Aaron: Yeah, I I believe in this dynamic similar to mine.
- 46:28Aaron: I get eked out one other one to take the top spot.
- 46:32Gavin: And I guess I should say ABV and not proof at this point.
- 46:34Gavin: Yep.
- 46:35Aaron: Well, I mean, just yeah, we found out it's British proof at like 1.73 something times.
- 46:40Gavin: Yeah, okay, whatever.
- 46:41Gavin: Right.
- 46:41Gavin: Um, let's call it A B V.
- 46:43Gavin: Yeah, let's do that.
- 46:46Gavin: That's fine.
- 46:46Aaron: Um, still didn't make a pick.
- 46:49Gavin: Yeah.
- 46:50Gavin: Hmm.
- 46:50Gavin: Well, that's all right.
- 46:52Gavin: All right, here you go.
- 46:53Gavin: This is the one that I don't want.
- 46:57Gavin: You're you're throwing away this one.
- 46:59Gavin: Throwing away number one.
- 47:02Aaron: I am picking number four.
- 47:04Aaron: Number four is your pick.
- 47:05Aaron: Do you want to know which one you picked, or do you want to know which one you threw away from?
- 47:08Aaron: I want to know which one I threw away.
- 47:09Aaron: All right.
- 47:10Aaron: You threw away Dewar's 12-year blended scotch.
- 47:15Aaron: This is double barrel aged, so it's aged in um two different kinds of barrels, although it does not say the first barreling.
- 47:24Gavin: Okay.
- 47:24Aaron: It does clarify that the second barreling is first Phil Bourbon's, right?
- 47:28Aaron: Which might explain some of that sweet dessertiness.
- 47:31Aaron: This one comes in at exactly 40 ABV and is a blend of up to 40 different single malts and single grain whiskeys.
- 47:41Aaron: What?
- 47:42Aaron: It's a pretty extensive blend.
- 47:43Aaron: Clocking in and a whopping $30 MSRP.
- 47:48Aaron: It's a great.
- 47:49Aaron: When we talk about trying to have a budget-friendly whiskey selection, I put a Doers 12 on there.
- 47:59Aaron: Um, you picked number one bottle, the Bunahaven 12-year unpeded Isla single mold.
- 48:09Aaron: This one clocks in at 46.3% ABV with an MSRP at $62, aged in a combination of bourbon and sherry barrels, which is explains the dark fruits and that kind of stuff that you picked up on the beginning.
- 48:23Gavin: My wife is gonna love this because she makes fun of me every time I say Bunahaven.
- 48:28Aaron: Yeah, yeah, it doesn't look like Bunahaven.
- 48:30Aaron: Nope.
- 48:31Aaron: Because there's no V in Bunahaven.
- 48:34Gavin: Um there's like 12 characters in Bunahaven.
- 48:37Aaron: It's long, it's long in um, it looks like it would be a much bigger mouthful than the than the name Bunahaven.
- 48:44Aaron: Um for those who are unfamiliar, in Gaelic, both a BH and an MH are both pronounced like V.
- 48:54Aaron: So that's the Bunahaven, not Bunahaben.
- 48:59Aaron: My wife calls it Bunahabahen.
- 49:02Aaron: Bunahabain.
- 49:03Aaron: I like that.
- 49:04Aaron: Yeah.
- 49:04Aaron: It sounds like you're speaking Middle English.
- 49:07Aaron: Exactly.
- 49:07Aaron: From Middle Earth.
- 49:09Gavin: From don't tell her that.
- 49:11Gavin: She loves that.
- 49:12Aaron: All right, so I want to know which were you more surprised by?
- 49:17Aaron: The one that you picked, or that Doers 12 beat your house scotch.
- 49:24Gavin: I am surprised by that.
- 49:26Gavin: Um, but I had a feeling, and I wanted, I think, something a little different, right?
- 49:33Gavin: So something that I drink on the daily or fairly recently or often.
- 49:38Gavin: I felt like I don't I don't have doers every day.
- 49:44Gavin: No, even though I have it on the shelf, I don't have it every day.
- 49:47Gavin: So I think that was part of that decision.
- 49:50Gavin: But it has shocked me a little bit.
- 49:52Aaron: I I will say, um, from having done our whiskies of the world and we did some single malts, or sorry, not single malts, single grains in Ireland and did single grains in Scotland.
- 50:04Aaron: Um, I can pick up on some of those single grain flavors in the doors, which obviously lends a softer, smoother, lighter kind of fruity note.
- 50:14Aaron: But I had always turned up my nose.
- 50:19Aaron: It blended scotches, right?
- 50:21Aaron: And then um that bottle actually placed really well a couple of years ago in Whiskey Advocates top 20 list.
- 50:29Aaron: Um, and I thought, really?
- 50:31Aaron: A $30 bottle?
- 50:32Aaron: And it was top one or two, like it three or four, something like that, right?
- 50:37Aaron: It was high up on the list.
- 50:38Aaron: And I was like, I'll go get one just to try it.
- 50:41Aaron: And took it to a Christmas party.
- 50:42Aaron: Um, thinking that, yeah, I will drink some if I leave it there, it's no big deal.
- 50:47Aaron: Um, we got there, cracked it up, I was like, my God, that's good.
- 50:50Aaron: I got really surprised by that.
- 50:53Aaron: Um, and this is now the third bottle of it that I've bought since then.
- 50:56Aaron: So I absolutely, absolutely recommend putting it on your shelf, considering it is half of the cost of the next least expensive bottle.
- 51:08Aaron: Right, so the Boon Oven's twice the cost of it.
- 51:11Aaron: And then the Kilcarin's three and a half times the cost of the doers.
- 51:17Aaron: And you eliminated it quickly right off the beginning.
- 51:20Aaron: Now, what I will tell you is you had asked about the opportunity to try the taste of the Kilcarin.
- 51:25Aaron: And I know you ran off with the cigar mold and I didn't, or the uh the Joseph Magnus?
- 51:31Aaron: Joseph Magnus.
- 51:33Aaron: I didn't get I didn't get to sip on that one.
- 51:35Aaron: You said that.
- 51:38Aaron: Look at this.
- 51:38Aaron: Look at that.
- 51:39Aaron: Yep, no, it's it's it's funny coming back, like as soon as you smell like, yep, I remember that smell, like for sure.
- 51:49Gavin: Yeah, fill silhouette hay on this one.
- 51:55Aaron: Um yeah, and I think you get into the slightly peated kind of things.
- 52:03Aaron: I I know the Bunehaven list is unpeated, but they make a lot of peated stuff there too.
- 52:09Aaron: And so I part of me wonders do you get any residual carryover in the stem, any of that kind of stuff that might give a peated influence, even to your unpeated whiskies.
- 52:22Aaron: And so, yeah, I but on on the palate and on the finish, uh that's got peat all over it.
- 52:29Aaron: I won't say it's heavily peated, but like compared to the other ones here, like all of a sudden you're like, oh yeah, no, there's clearly peat on that one.
- 52:36Aaron: Yeah.
- 52:37Aaron: All right, the other three, no, no, but that one absolutely's got it.
- 52:40Gavin: There's still very much of a grain note, like uh, like you walk into a bakery.
- 52:46Gavin: I think there's a bit of a uh a yeasty, um like bread, strong bread note.
- 52:54Gavin: Yeah.
- 52:55Aaron: How funny is it we come back to in our tasting and enjoying the ones we eliminated first?
- 53:02Aaron: So I will say uh a couple things.
- 53:05Aaron: One, this was fun.
- 53:06Aaron: For those who haven't gone out and picked out flowers or made dinner reservations or whatever it is that you plan on doing for your mother for Mother's Day, please go do it.
- 53:16Aaron: Or your wife.
- 53:18Aaron: Um, well, she's not really your mom.
- 53:20Aaron: She's not really your mom, but you should give your kids a couple bucks and have them go get something.
- 53:25Aaron: That's right.
- 53:26Aaron: Right?
- 53:26Aaron: I'm with you there.
- 53:27Aaron: Uh mine are at the age now, they can go get it themselves.
- 53:29Aaron: So I'm I'm off the hook now.
- 53:31Aaron: But uh, no, show appreciation.
- 53:34Aaron: Uh we all have a mother.
- 53:36Aaron: Um, even when we disagree with them, even when they push push our buttons.
- 53:40Aaron: Yeah, yo mama.
- 53:41Aaron: Yo, yo mama deserves better than you.
- 53:44Aaron: That's all I'm saying.
- 53:46Aaron: That's all I'm saying.
- 53:47Aaron: Um, so I I think the box is coming back out.
- 53:52Aaron: I enjoyed putting this together.
- 53:54Gavin: Yeah.
- 53:54Aaron: Um, look at that.
- 53:55Aaron: He did a great job.
- 53:56Aaron: You see that tartan in there?
- 53:58Aaron: Wow.
- 53:58Aaron: I it's Amazon tartan.
- 54:01Aaron: I don't even know what tartan it is, but it was what I could get in a couple days when I needed to make the box.
- 54:06Gavin: And quick shout out to my friend Jessica, who made our wonderful topper.
- 54:13Gavin: If you're interested in some of these, let us know.
- 54:16Aaron: Uh, the uh the policy is if you give us something, we put it on the air.
- 54:21Aaron: Yep.
- 54:22Aaron: And so even though it's not whiskey, we still wanted to say thank you.
- 54:26Aaron: Uh yeah, so until then, um we encourage you to go out, get a chance to do something like this, right?
- 54:35Aaron: Whether somebody else goes in the other room, picks up, picks a pour for you.
- 54:39Aaron: Uh, drink whiskey blind.
- 54:41Aaron: It really does open your eyes to kind of waddles in that glass without all those preconceived notions.
- 54:47Aaron: And as always, cheers.
