Speaker 1: Chapter nine, in which the Red Sea and the Indian
• 0:03
Speaker 1: Ocean prove propitious to the designs of Phileas Fogg. The
• 0:12
Speaker 1: distance between Suez and Aden is precisely thirteen hundred and
• 0:16
Speaker 1: ten miles, and the regulations of the company allow the
• 0:20
Speaker 1: steamers one hundred and thirty eight hours in which to
• 0:23
Speaker 1: traverse it. The Mongolia, thanks to the vigorous exertions of
• 0:27
Speaker 1: the engineer, seemed likely, so rapid was her speed to
• 0:31
Speaker 1: reach her destination considerably within that time. The greater part
• 0:36
Speaker 1: of the passengers from Brindisi were bound for India, some
• 0:40
Speaker 1: for Bombay, others for Calcutta by way of Bombay, the
• 0:44
Speaker 1: nearest route thither now that a railway crosses the Indian peninsula.
• 0:49
Speaker 1: Among the passengers was a number of officials and military
• 0:53
Speaker 1: officers of various grades, the latter being either attached to
• 0:57
Speaker 1: the regular British forces or commanding the sea troops and
• 1:01
Speaker 1: receiving high salaries ever since the Central government had assumed
• 1:05
Speaker 1: the powers of the East India Company. For the sub
• 1:08
Speaker 1: lieutenants get two hundred and eighty pounds, brigadiers twenty four
• 1:13
Speaker 1: hundred pounds, and generals of divisions four thousand pounds. What
• 1:18
Speaker 1: with the military men, a number of rich young Englishmen
• 1:21
Speaker 1: on their travels, and the hospitable efforts of the purser,
• 1:25
Speaker 1: the time passed quickly on the Mongolia. The best of
• 1:29
Speaker 1: fare was spread upon the cabin tables at breakfast, launch, dinner,
• 1:33
Speaker 1: and the eight o'clock supper, and the ladies scrupulously changed
• 1:37
Speaker 1: their toilets twice a day, and the hours were whirled
• 1:40
Speaker 1: away when the sea was tranquil with music, dancing and games.
• 1:46
Speaker 1: But the Red Sea is full of caprice and often boisterous,
• 1:49
Speaker 1: like most long and narrow gulfs. When the wind came
• 1:53
Speaker 1: from the African or Asian coast, the Mongolia, with her
• 1:56
Speaker 1: long hull, rolled fearfully. Then the ladies speedily disappeared. Below,
• 2:02
Speaker 1: the pianos were silent, singing and dancing suddenly ceased. Yet
• 2:07
Speaker 1: the good ship plowed straight on, unretarded by wind or wave,
• 2:11
Speaker 1: towards the straits of bab El Mandeb. What was Phileas
• 2:16
Speaker 1: Fogg doing all this time? It might be thought that,
• 2:20
Speaker 1: in his anxiety, he would be constantly watching the changes
• 2:23
Speaker 1: of the wind, the disorderly raging of the billows, every
• 2:28
Speaker 1: chance in short which might force the Mongolia to slacken
• 2:32
Speaker 1: her speed and thus interrupt his journey. But if he
• 2:36
Speaker 1: thought of these possibilities, he did not betray the fact
• 2:40
Speaker 1: by any outward sign. Always the same impassable member of
• 2:45
Speaker 1: the reform Club, whom no incident could surprise, as unvarying
• 2:50
Speaker 1: as the ship's chronometers, and seldom having the curiosity even
• 2:54
Speaker 1: to go upon the deck, He passed through the memorable
• 2:57
Speaker 1: scenes of the Red Sea with cold indiation difference, did
• 3:01
Speaker 1: not care to recognize the historic towns and villages which
• 3:05
Speaker 1: along its borders raised their picturesque guidelines against the sky,
• 3:10
Speaker 1: and betrayed no fear of the dangers of the Arabic Gulf,
• 3:13
Speaker 1: which the old historians always spoke of with horror, and
• 3:17
Speaker 1: upon which the ancient navigators never ventured without propitiating the
• 3:21
Speaker 1: gods by ample sacrifices. How did this eccentric personage pass
• 3:26
Speaker 1: his time on the Mongolia. He made his four hearty
• 3:30
Speaker 1: meals every day, regardless of the most persistent rolling and
• 3:34
Speaker 1: pitching on the part of the steamer, and he played
• 3:37
Speaker 1: whist indefatigably, for he had found partners as enthusiastic in
• 3:42
Speaker 1: the game as himself. A tax collector on the way
• 3:46
Speaker 1: to his post at Goa. The Reverend Decimus Smith returning
• 3:51
Speaker 1: to his paraship Bombay, and a brigadier general of the
• 3:54
Speaker 1: English Army who was about to rejoin his brigade at Benaris,
• 3:58
Speaker 1: made up the party, and with mister Fogg, played whist
• 4:02
Speaker 1: by the hour together in absorbing silence. As for passepartout,
• 4:08
Speaker 1: he too had escaped sea sickness, and took his meals
• 4:11
Speaker 1: conscientiously in the forward cabin. He rather enjoyed the voyage,
• 4:15
Speaker 1: for he was well fed and well lodged, took great
• 4:19
Speaker 1: interest in the scenes through which they were passing, and
• 4:22
Speaker 1: consoled himself with the delusion that his master's whim would
• 4:26
Speaker 1: end at Bombay. He was pleased on the day after
• 4:29
Speaker 1: leaving Suez to find on deck the obliging person with
• 4:33
Speaker 1: whom he had walked and chatted on the keys. If
• 4:37
Speaker 1: I am not mistaken, said he, approaching this person with
• 4:41
Speaker 1: his most amiable smile. You are the gentleman who so
• 4:44
Speaker 1: kindly volunteered to guide me at Suez. Ah, I quite
• 4:49
Speaker 1: recognize you. You are the servant of the strange Englishman.
• 4:54
Speaker 1: Just so, Monsieur Fix. Monsieur Fix resumed passepartout, I'm charmed
• 5:02
Speaker 1: to find you on board. Where are you bound? Like
• 5:07
Speaker 1: you to Bombay, that's capital. Have you made this trip
• 5:12
Speaker 1: before several times? I am one of the agents of
• 5:15
Speaker 1: the Peninsular Company. Then you know India, Why yes, replied Fix,
• 5:23
Speaker 1: who spoke cautiously. A curious place this India, Oh, very
• 5:29
Speaker 1: curious mosques, minarets, temples, fakirs, pagodas, tigers, snakes, elephants. I
• 5:37
Speaker 1: hope you have ample time to see the sights. I
• 5:40
Speaker 1: hope so, monsieur Fix, You see a man of sound
• 5:44
Speaker 1: sense ought not to spend his life jumping from a
• 5:47
Speaker 1: steamer upon a railway train, and from a railway train
• 5:50
Speaker 1: upon a steamer again, pretending to make the tour of
• 5:53
Speaker 1: the world in eighty days. No, all these gymnastics, you
• 5:58
Speaker 1: may be sure, will see at Bombay. And mister Fogg
• 6:03
Speaker 1: is getting on well, asked Fix, in the most natural
• 6:06
Speaker 1: tone in the world. Quite well, And I too, I
• 6:11
Speaker 1: eat like a famished ogre. It is the sea air.
• 6:15
Speaker 1: But I never see your master on deck. Never. He
• 6:19
Speaker 1: hasn't the least curiosity. Do you know, mister Passepartout, that
• 6:25
Speaker 1: this pretended tour in eighty days may conceal some secret
• 6:29
Speaker 1: errand perhaps a diplomatic mission. Faith, Monsieur Fix, I assure
• 6:36
Speaker 1: you I know nothing about it, nor would I give
• 6:38
Speaker 1: half a crown to find out. After this meeting, Passepartout
• 6:43
Speaker 1: and Fix got into the habit of chatting together, the
• 6:46
Speaker 1: latter making it a point to gain the worthy man's confidence.
• 6:50
Speaker 1: He frequently offered him a glass of whiskey or pale
• 6:53
Speaker 1: ale in the steamer bar room, which Passepartout never failed
• 6:57
Speaker 1: to accept with graceful alacrity, mentally pronouncing Fixed the best
• 7:02
Speaker 1: of good fellows. Meanwhile, the Mongolia was pushing forward rapidly.
• 7:08
Speaker 1: On the thirteenth Mocha, surrounded by its ruined walls, whereon
• 7:12
Speaker 1: date trees were growing, was sighted, and on the mountains
• 7:16
Speaker 1: beyond were spied vast coffee fields. Passepartout was ravished to
• 7:21
Speaker 1: behold the celebrated place, and thought that, with its circular
• 7:25
Speaker 1: walls and dismantled fort, it looked like an immense coffee
• 7:29
Speaker 1: cup and saucer. The following night they passed through the
• 7:33
Speaker 1: strait of bab El Mandeb, which means in Arabic the
• 7:36
Speaker 1: bridge of tears, and the next day they put in
• 7:40
Speaker 1: its steamer Point northwest of Aden Harbor to take in coal.
• 7:45
Speaker 1: This matter of fueling steamers is a serious one. At
• 7:48
Speaker 1: such distances from the coal mines. It cost the Peninsular
• 7:52
Speaker 1: Company some eight hundred thousand pounds a year. In these
• 7:57
Speaker 1: distant seas, coal is worth three or four pound sterling
• 8:00
Speaker 1: a ton. The Mongolia had still sixteen hundred and fifty
• 8:05
Speaker 1: miles to traverse before reaching Bombay, and was obliged to
• 8:10
Speaker 1: remain four hours at steamer Point to coal up. But
• 8:14
Speaker 1: this delay, as it was foreseen, did not affect Phileas
• 8:17
Speaker 1: Fogg's program. Besides, the Mongolia, instead of reaching Aiden on
• 8:22
Speaker 1: the morning of the fifteenth when she was due, arrived
• 8:25
Speaker 1: there on the evening of the fourteenth, a gain of
• 8:28
Speaker 1: fifteen hours. Mister Fogg and his servant went ashore at
• 8:33
Speaker 1: Aiden to have the passport again visaed. Fix Unobserved followed them.
• 8:39
Speaker 1: The visa procured, mister Fogg returned on board to resume
• 8:42
Speaker 1: his former habits, while passepartout according to custom sauntered about
• 8:48
Speaker 1: among the mixed population of Somalis, Banyans, Parsis, Jews, Arabs
• 8:53
Speaker 1: and Europeans who comprised the twenty five thousand inhabitants of Aiden.
• 8:59
Speaker 1: He gave raised with wonder upon the fortifications which make
• 9:03
Speaker 1: this place the Gibraltar of the Indian Ocean, and the
• 9:06
Speaker 1: vast cisterns, where the English engineers were still at work
• 9:10
Speaker 1: two thousand years after the engineers of Solomon. Very curious,
• 9:16
Speaker 1: Very curious, said Passepartout to himself, on returning to the steamer.
• 9:22
Speaker 1: I see that it is by no means useless to
• 9:25
Speaker 1: travel if a man wants to see something new. At
• 9:29
Speaker 1: six p m. The Mongolia slowly moved out of the
• 9:32
Speaker 1: roadstead and was soon once more on the Indian Ocean.
• 9:36
Speaker 1: She had one hundred and sixty eight hours in which
• 9:38
Speaker 1: to reach Bombay, and the sea was favorable, the wind
• 9:42
Speaker 1: being to the northwest, and all sails aiding the engine.
• 9:47
Speaker 1: The steamer rolled but little. The ladies in fresh toilets
• 9:50
Speaker 1: reappeared on deck, and the singing and dancing were resumed.
• 9:55
Speaker 1: The trip was being accomplished most successfully, and Passepartout was
• 9:59
Speaker 1: enchanted with the congenial companion which chance had secured him,
• 10:03
Speaker 1: in the person of the delightful fix. On Sunday, October twentieth,
• 10:08
Speaker 1: towards noon, they came in sight of the Indian coast.
• 10:12
Speaker 1: Two hours later the pilot came on board. A range
• 10:16
Speaker 1: of hills lay against the sky in the horizon, and
• 10:19
Speaker 1: soon the rows of palms which adorned Bombay came distinctly
• 10:23
Speaker 1: into view. The steamer entered the road formed by the
• 10:26
Speaker 1: islands in the bay, and at half past four she
• 10:30
Speaker 1: hauled up at the keys of Bombay. Phileas Fogg was
• 10:34
Speaker 1: in the act of finishing the thirty third rubber of
• 10:36
Speaker 1: the voyage, and his partner and himself, having by a
• 10:40
Speaker 1: bold stroke captured all thirteen of the tricks, concluded this
• 10:45
Speaker 1: fine campaign with a brilliant victory. The Mongolia was due
• 10:49
Speaker 1: at Bombay on the twenty second. She arrived on the twentieth.
• 10:54
Speaker 1: This was again to Phileas Fogg, of two days since
• 10:57
Speaker 1: his departure from London. Calmly entered the fact in the
