- 0:00Speaker 1: When we're done here. It's the first Yukon Women's Basketball
- 0:03Speaker 1: Coaches Show Bob Joyce gino Oriema. They preview the twenty
- 0:07Speaker 1: four to twenty five season high hopes for the women.
- 0:09Speaker 1: I think they're preseason number two in the country. And
- 0:12Speaker 1: it follows our show at seven here along the Yukon
- 0:15Speaker 1: Sports Network, the Varsity Network app, and the Varsity Network
- 0:18Speaker 1: dot Com. Later on this show, Jaden McDonald joins us
- 0:23Speaker 1: Yukon linebacker. We're going to talk to him about hurrying
- 0:26Speaker 1: the quarterback and the tight end Lou Hanson, who came
- 0:29Speaker 1: from Michigan and really had an outstanding day last week
- 0:32Speaker 1: against Georgia's state back with Jim mora coach, we always
- 0:35Speaker 1: talk about tight ends. Maybe it's me, I'm always talking
- 0:38Speaker 1: about tight ends. But what a fun, you know, development
- 0:42Speaker 1: it's been to see Lou Hanson now catching the ball.
- 0:44Speaker 1: You ate five catches the other day, nice touchdown catch
- 0:47Speaker 1: in the corner of the end zone to get the
- 0:50Speaker 1: Huskies offense off and running. You know, seeing that development
- 0:55Speaker 1: of a player or a position. For you as a coach,
- 0:58Speaker 1: what's that like because you probably sit there and go, boy,
- 1:01Speaker 1: if we can get this group going we're going to
- 1:03Speaker 1: be better and now it looks like you're getting that
- 1:06Speaker 1: group going in the right direction.
- 1:09Speaker 2: Well, Lou has just always been such a hard worker,
- 1:13Speaker 2: great attitude, team guy. You know, he loves football and
- 1:20Speaker 2: uh to see him, you know, catching the ball and
- 1:22Speaker 2: having success doing that is great. The thing that has
- 1:25Speaker 2: kind of gone unnoticed is his ability to block. You know,
- 1:28Speaker 2: the tight ends are so critical in our in our
- 1:30Speaker 2: run game, and uh he he does a really good
- 1:36Speaker 2: job there. To have a guy now that you know,
- 1:40Speaker 2: Nick Evers has confidence dropping it down to uh is big,
- 1:44Speaker 2: you know, and we can use him on some of
- 1:45Speaker 2: the buttler, the bootlegs and things like that. I think
- 1:48Speaker 2: it's really critical. So you know, when you've got a
- 1:50Speaker 2: guy like Lou who's such a good person, such a
- 1:52Speaker 2: hard worker, and then you see kind of the fruits
- 1:55Speaker 2: of his labor, I mean, I think it picks everybody up,
- 1:58Speaker 2: you know. I think we have real dependence on him
- 2:01Speaker 2: and his energy and now his production in the past game.
- 2:06Speaker 1: Yeah, yards have to catch twenty seven for him in
- 2:08Speaker 1: that game. And I've said this before, a tight end
- 2:11Speaker 1: running loose in the impact defensive backfield, that's like a
- 2:15Speaker 1: nightmare to with the defensive back, isn't it.
- 2:18Speaker 2: Yeah, you don't want to have to tackle one of
- 2:19Speaker 2: those big guys. You know, he go saw him off low,
- 2:22Speaker 2: but they're no fun to tackle. And Lusman getting the
- 2:25Speaker 2: ball in the end zone, and you know, I'm just
- 2:27Speaker 2: really excited to see him progress as we go through
- 2:30Speaker 2: the rest of the season.
- 2:31Speaker 1: Nick Evers was ten for sixteen coaching the game. The
- 2:34Speaker 1: running game was working so well. Two hundred and seventy
- 2:37Speaker 1: seven yards gain and forty three rushes. I mean, that's
- 2:42Speaker 1: that's a good formula in my mind. You know, the
- 2:44Speaker 1: quarterback isn't forced to do things that are difficult. You
- 2:48Speaker 1: had to lead. You establish that he threw for only
- 2:52Speaker 1: seventy five yards, but it didn't feel like, you know,
- 2:55Speaker 1: he had to do that much. And that in a sense,
- 2:59Speaker 1: I think that's a good thing, isn't it.
- 3:01Speaker 2: Uh Yeah, I mean if that if you're if you're
- 3:03Speaker 2: running the ball and you're controlling the ball running it,
- 3:06Speaker 2: then you you know, you keep doing it and uh,
- 3:09Speaker 2: because that kind of can strip a team of its
- 3:10Speaker 2: will to play, you know, when they're just getting the
- 3:12Speaker 2: ball run at them hard like we were able to
- 3:14Speaker 2: do the other night. Uh, But we want to see
- 3:17Speaker 2: our past game continue to develop as well. And uh,
- 3:20Speaker 2: you know Nick had a couple couple of drops in
- 3:22Speaker 2: there too, so his stats would have been better. Uh.
- 3:25Speaker 2: But I think that what you look at when you
- 3:27Speaker 2: look at your quarterback is, you know, his decision making.
- 3:31Speaker 2: Is his decision making improving, is his accuracy improving, is
- 3:34Speaker 2: his timing improving? And uh and nice see all those
- 3:38Speaker 2: things with Nick. So you know, a critical part to
- 3:41Speaker 2: run to throwing the ball is running the ball, and
- 3:43Speaker 2: critical part to running the ball is being able to
- 3:46Speaker 2: throw the ball and keep people off balance. So that's
- 3:48Speaker 2: what we're always striving for.
- 3:50Speaker 1: Yeah, and the other thing too. And it's interesting there
- 3:52Speaker 1: was an interference call Skyler Bell was in the end
- 3:54Speaker 1: zone trying to make a catch, kind of an important
- 3:57Speaker 1: play in the game. Sometimes a quarterback can help that
- 4:00Speaker 1: happen by the way he throws the ball. Where he
- 4:02Speaker 1: throws the ball, because the defender might be in perfect position,
- 4:05Speaker 1: but maybe he's not, and then the ball is delivered
- 4:07Speaker 1: in a certain spot and the dB is put in
- 4:10Speaker 1: a bad place and interference is called. I mean, there's
- 4:13Speaker 1: so many aspects to playing quarterback that people don't even
- 4:16Speaker 1: think about. In my mind, when you have a game
- 4:20Speaker 1: where so many little things matter.
- 4:22Speaker 2: Yeah, and you know that is a common play you
- 4:26Speaker 2: see in football. Is that kind of that underthrown fade
- 4:28Speaker 2: where the defender or the receiver tries to come back
- 4:31Speaker 2: for the ball and the defender interferes. That happens a
- 4:33Speaker 2: lot and a lot of times a quarterback will throw
- 4:36Speaker 2: it short when it's real covered up so that you know,
- 4:38Speaker 2: you can maybe draw the PI call, which is what
- 4:42Speaker 2: happened down in the end zone with Skyler. And you
- 4:44Speaker 2: know that one doesn't go anywhere in the stats. That
- 4:46Speaker 2: doesn't go as an attempt, that doesn't go in as
- 4:47Speaker 2: a completion. She just goes as a fifteen yard penalty,
- 4:50Speaker 2: which gives us a first down. So it's as good
- 4:53Speaker 2: as a fifteen yard completion. But I think Nick is
- 4:57Speaker 2: really starting to grasp the position. I think it's so
- 4:59Speaker 2: ch important that you know that I keep in mind
- 5:02Speaker 2: that he's a young, developing player in terms of his
- 5:06Speaker 2: time on the field playing in games, and uh, I
- 5:10Speaker 2: see improvement every day in practice, and I see improvement
- 5:13Speaker 2: in the games, and uh it's all a credit to
- 5:17Speaker 2: the way Nick works in the way that you know
- 5:19Speaker 2: Brad coaches him and works with him and mentors him
- 5:23Speaker 2: and the way the way Joe Fiano you know, is
- 5:27Speaker 2: there for him, and it's it's a good situation right now.
- 5:31Speaker 1: Yeah, you're talking about Brad Robins your QB coaching, So
- 5:34Speaker 1: it's it's like having a piece of clay, right. You
- 5:37Speaker 1: got a young guy that hasn't had any real college experience,
- 5:40Speaker 1: but he's got talent, and you have to work your
- 5:43Speaker 1: way through the mistakes or whatever may be going on
- 5:46Speaker 1: and see the bright side of things. And and there's
- 5:49Speaker 1: so much pressure on quarterbacks to to perform the perfection,
- 5:53Speaker 1: but there's no perfection in any of these games. So
- 5:56Speaker 1: I'm curious what you think on that, Brad, Brad Robbins
- 5:58Speaker 1: has to kind of look what Nick's doing day to
- 6:01Speaker 1: day in practice and in games and analyze what's what
- 6:05Speaker 1: he's done well, what he's doing better. Uh, it is
- 6:08Speaker 1: a process that that takes all year, doesn't it.
- 6:12Speaker 2: It takes a lifetime at that position, you know, I
- 6:14Speaker 2: mean really it does. You watch the greatest that ever
- 6:16Speaker 2: have done it, and they still have bad throws. You know,
- 6:20Speaker 2: they still have misreads in this in this industry, in
- 6:27Speaker 2: in athletics in general, you know, you've never got it.
- 6:30Speaker 2: You've never got it figured out, you've never arrived. You're
- 6:33Speaker 2: always your work under construction. And that's the attitude that
- 6:37Speaker 2: we take. And as you, as you are constructing and
- 6:40Speaker 2: working on, you know, becoming a better player, your coach
- 6:43Speaker 2: needs to do a great job of recognizing what you
- 6:45Speaker 2: do well and that we can accentuate, and what that
- 6:48Speaker 2: you struggle, things you struggle with that we can improve upon,
- 6:51Speaker 2: and maybe just some things that don't fit you know,
- 6:54Speaker 2: your style of play that we should junk, you know,
- 6:58Speaker 2: we should get rid of. And now that's that's what
- 7:01Speaker 2: a coach's job is. And Brad does a really great
- 7:05Speaker 2: job of that, and Gordy does and they do a
- 7:08Speaker 2: really great job of game planning and putting not only Nick,
- 7:11Speaker 2: but these these other guys in position to make plays
- 7:14Speaker 2: and win games.
- 7:15Speaker 1: Yeah, it's a work in progress. I've been saying. I
- 7:17Speaker 1: said it a few times this year. Jim Moore with us,
- 7:20Speaker 1: we're back in a moment more the Yukon Football Coaches
