- 1:32Adventures of Philip Marlow. The original air at eight was April the twenty third
- 1:37of nineteen forty nine, and the title is The Cloak of Camea Maya.
- 1:44It started it doing in a Los Angeles taxi and wind up that night on
- 1:47a cliff in the middle of the Pacific, all because of a Dutchman with
- 1:49fifty thousand dollars, a coups in, a lily Punton, and an orienter
- 1:53with a show for one of that cloak nte of nothing but that is from
- 1:57the pen of Raymond Chandler, standing author of crime fiction, comes his most
- 2:01famous character and the Adventures of Philip marlow Now with Gerald Moore starred as Philip
- 2:16Marlowe. We bring you tonight's exciting story. A quote of a Maya Maya.
- 2:44The message that a repulsively wide awake boy who was missing at two Front
- 2:47Row Center had delivered at six am had come in two parts. The first,
- 2:53scrawled in black ink on a wrinkle piece of paper, said marlow get
- 2:55hold of a taxicab, poses the driving yourself and an exact at eight o'clock
- 3:00this morning, come past eighty eight to forty in a thousand drive, signed
- 3:05Pollard Schindler. The second half made more sense. It was printed in neat
- 3:08letters, I need a green paper and under an engraving a Benjamin Franklin read
- 3:13one hundred silver dollars payable to the bearer and the man. So at exactly
- 3:17eight o'clock, I was behind the wheel of a hired cab leather jacket pete
- 3:22cap too quick and all and within hey taxi distance of number eighty eight forty
- 3:25Mister Pollard Schindler round man and square clothes with haircut to match was not late.
- 3:30That's way, yes, sir calv of course, I think I'm humping
- 3:38my head off. I want to go to the municipal airport. Do you
- 3:40understand the municipal airport at Inglewood? Okay, Okay, Inglewood Municipal Airport.
- 3:46It is mellow Mika, quick put the flag down eree minute and oh yeah,
- 3:53watched by whom mister Sindler. Yeah, I do not know, man,
- 3:55I would listen carefully. Mallowlika. You want to go to the hall
- 4:00An a hotel and wait for a young lady named Lani Collier. Then at
- 4:03the hour she designates you go to her house number forty four Diamond Head Circle
- 4:09and pick up the Oh wait a minute, Halemoana Diamond Head all those places.
- 4:13This hotel isn't my NHS in Hawaii. Didn't I mention this in my
- 4:15note? No? You didn't. In order to mention picking up a cloak.
- 4:19That just proves I haven't been myself ever since yesterday when I received this
- 4:24anonymous letter that's postmark onno Lulu. All it says is Camea Maya's cloak of
- 4:30golden feathers will bring no less than death. Have you ever been to the
- 4:36islands, Yeah, twice once business one's pleasure. But then surely you've heard
- 4:40people who speak of Kingdom Maya mayor. Oh sure it was back in the
- 4:42seventeen eighties, right, they organized a conquer Oahu by driving the defenders over
- 4:46that cliff that divides the islands. Yeah, that's it, my lord.
- 4:50The feather cloak at Kamea Maya was about one hundred square teeth and strided a
- 4:56golden yellow feather value that more than half a million dollars. Really, how
- 5:00come, well, fads? Oh yes, but they are from the now
- 5:03extinct black Mamo bird mallow and there was only one yellow fellow on each bird.
- 5:08And I could explain why they're now extinct. Don't tell me this is
- 5:11all a game of Calia and Marlow, the sandler with a cloak the Blanston
- 5:14And you say, oh no, no, Marlow, no, it isn't
- 5:15there with the cloak you speak of, But Lanny Carlia has another one less
- 5:19valuable. Of course it's one quarter of the size, but it also belonged
- 5:23to the king, and it also has made the big priceless feadows. And
- 5:27it's this a property to having the whole legal like yeah, yeah yeah.
- 5:30Lney is wealthy young, oh yeah, about forty five. He went to
- 5:34a fashionable schools here in California and without cares more about fun and first from
- 5:40I J. Fox and she does priceless early. So for fifty thousand dollars,
- 5:45I have bought the cloak to is sell to a New York millionaire,
- 5:46but almost she loves Island law and Vegas. I was right. I'm still
- 5:55being followed just right. First, no no, no, no, no,
- 5:58nothing exactly as I want it. Whoever it is will follow me,
- 6:01not to and when I am in Honolulu, they will still follow me while
- 6:04I take care of the business on hand. Y. Yes, here is
- 6:08a reservation for you on the next plane. So after you leave me and
- 6:11collect your cab there which will be five hundred dollars, you drive away.
- 6:15Then later Mallow get back here board your plane. And tonight when I've got
- 6:19the cloak, they get back to your hotel room at the Alamo Anna and
- 6:23sit on it. Ah Because unless I am a complete success as a decoy,
- 6:28you will have your share of couple two. I'm sure, but Marlow
- 6:32from which specific direction it will come, I do not know. I got
- 6:44the five hundred bucks, which is the cover expenses for my honolul will trip,
- 6:46and I was told to keep the change. So after I returned both
- 6:49cab and costume with their owner, I had a tend of the original hiring
- 6:53price and had him drive me back to my apartment and wait while I packed.
- 6:56Then I got into the cab again rear seat said Municipal Airport Inglewood,
- 7:00and settled back to think about the crossroads of the lovely hula hands and what
- 7:03shouldn't be too rough a job there? I was wrong, because in the
- 7:08next minute and those that followed, everything was done in the hard way.
- 7:11First we ran out of gas, then got tied up at a traffic jam,
- 7:14and after that got stopped for speeding, all of which added up to
- 7:16me at the airport. Just in time, I'll watch my plane take off
- 7:19without me. But then when I told the cherubic clerk and a great flannel
- 7:23and insipid smile, that my name was Philip Marlow, that I wanted a
- 7:27reservation on the next flight, which was leaving in an hour. Things got
- 7:30even worse. But you can't be Philip Marlow, sir, That he's not
- 7:32the Philip Marlow who was on TI twenty one that just left. You have
- 7:35a reason for saying that life will certainly do. There were thirty six seats
- 7:41on that plane, sir, and when she took off, all thirty six
- 7:44were full. Now I know, I checked myself and I don't make mistakes.
- 7:47Well, bully for you, boy, but I happen to be both
- 7:49Philip Marlow and the man who was supposed to be on that plane also bluster.
- 7:54I'm out of patience. Now I get the next planet, don't I
- 7:56Come on, I can't stand in decision. Well, I got you what
- 8:00it could be arranged, mister mollow. It's a better effect. I know
- 8:01it came well in that case, my friend, Thank you. When we
- 8:16took off, my flame of mind left me ready and waiting for at least
- 8:18the crack up at sea. But an hour later, the last of California
- 8:22had slipped over the horizon, and there was only clear sky. I began
- 8:28to relax. My mind drifted pleasantly. The flavor of the lime life saver
- 8:31in my mouth made me think of tall, wondrous frosted Hawaiian punches and the
- 8:37sinulous grace of lovely whol hands. I opened my eyes again. Diamond Head
- 8:45was in front of us, majestic in the red globe, eating the sun.
- 8:48It gave all of the lush Morna valley. I could see the texture
- 8:52of pick building. We landed like the airport was made of marshmallows. And
- 8:56a half hour later I was in the lobby of the Hellnuana Hotel. It
- 9:00was cushioned rad tan and Filipino mahogany of a cool tile, and everywhere laughing
- 9:05sunburned faces wearing bright splashes of color. So smiling both inside and out.
- 9:09I walked briskly to the reservation desk and told a good looking Hawaiian and white
- 9:13flannel that I was Philip marlow That is reply, I stopped, smiling,
- 9:18both inside and out. But sir, your reservation was taken three hours ago.
- 9:22There must be some mistake. I doubt it, But you are Philip
- 9:26Marlowe of Los Angeles sir, that's right, and I've been through this before
- 9:28today because of what I thought was an error due to hey do to what
- 9:35me? And nothing? No, I'll talk to you later. There was
- 9:45a large circle of mirror on the wall behind the curtain. Even as we
- 9:48had talked, I caught her a flection of a beautiful tan girl in a
- 9:50cocoa brown suit, white pearls and nose stoppings, with the mention of my
- 9:54name, had Donna take that? It made a long blonde hair whip straight
- 9:58out, and she saw me watching it. She pivoted sharply on a spiked
- 10:01field and hurry total deny under a Banian tree, where there was Hawaiian music
- 10:05and a lot of different looking people drinking the glass top tables under a three
- 10:09quarter moon. I stayed near the reservation desk long enough to light a cigarette,
- 10:13and then I followed them. She was seated away from a lobby entrance,
- 10:18and on a hunch that she might be landing Kallia, I started for
- 10:20an empty table next to hers, but the middle aged Chinese and Greg Gavidy
- 10:24and Panamata match slipped under the chair that I was after, so I forgot
- 10:28about being subtle. And addressing her as miss Callia, introduced myself as an
- 10:33old and dear friend of Pauline Schindler's one Leland Dunn. Well, this is
- 10:37a pleasant surprise, mister Dunn. But tell me how did you know what
- 10:41I looked like? Well, Paula Schindler's accent doesn't have for his vocabulary,
- 10:45Miss Callier, he used the right djuctive to believe me. I'd love to
- 10:48believe you, but I can't, mister Dunn, because Paulad Schindler never saw
- 10:54me in his life. Hould out business was done by Telifoni. Okay,
- 10:56my mistake. I'm Philamolo, and I want to know when we rendezvo with
- 11:01forty four diamond head circles with a cloak of kameya mayor. Yeah, you
- 11:05are no more Philip Mordel than you are Leland Dunn. And if you need
- 11:09a reason, it's that I just left Philip Hollow upstairs. My wait a
- 11:11minute, David, there's only one model that's me. I can prove it,
- 11:13y'all. Bet you can forge capers and all. I've already been warned
- 11:18to watch for imposters. So coup wasting both your time and mine, and
- 11:20get out of my way. I've got things to her work, Ronnie.
- 11:22I proved that you're neither dumb nor model, but comea Maya himself. No
- 11:28thanks and good bye. If there had been a door, should have slammed
- 11:35it all. Now I had two clues. One an obvious party would assume
- 11:39the name of Philip Mallow, and the other Lenny Kaya, less obvious but
- 11:43more intriguing. So figuring the road company Malow would keep, I followed Lennie,
- 11:46who by this time was getting into a new yellow Mash convertible. Before
- 11:50I got to it, she stepped on the gas, through the lights on
- 11:52and lurched from the curb. So I ran across the street to what I
- 11:54thought was a taxi, But I was wrong, because it turned out to
- 11:58be a Chouford limousine and being helped in by a small, swarthy item of
- 12:03ubious lineage you know, wrinkled cotton uniform. Was the Chinese and Greg Gabadeine
- 12:07and Panamata match who've been sitting nearest on the l nine. What counted more
- 12:11was that he obviously sensed my problem. You wish to follow the girls?
- 12:16Yeah, it's a lover spet, you know what I mean? I think
- 12:20so quickly. Yes, sir, you know where else she's going. I'm
- 12:26not sure. Maybe diamond head circle. Maybe he's gaining. Let's make a
- 12:31diamond head circle. They're fast away. There a shortcut. There is no
- 12:35no nola, which means what in never mind diamond head circles. Drive past
- 12:41to the factory and the thing I do not move. Mala, Oh comes
- 12:48the heavy artillery. Okay, cool man, show what's with the factory?
- 12:52You out of the way until the cloak of Kamehameha is mine, which won't
- 12:56work because, believe it or not, clever one, there's another Philip Mala
- 12:58with the moment a lot closer to that collection of fancy feathers than either of
- 13:01us. Nine. I bet they would not get here. Four. It
- 13:13was my chance. As we hit, I thought that his gun and then
- 13:15jerked the hand of the door and jump. When I got to my feet,
- 13:16I was on the sidewalk and bruised, but better off than Shina boy.
- 13:20It was draped over the back of the front seat and shouting dirty words
- 13:22and a half a dozen Oriental dialects at both Jolo and the driver of the
- 13:26pineapple truck that at sideswipers a cloud that included a towering Hawaiian policeman who promptly
- 13:31told mine hostess shut up, gathered in a hurry, so I ran for
- 13:35a TAXI, gave the driver ten bucks the address I wanted, and took
- 13:37off. The sweet on which Monny Cartier lived was a neat curving strip that
- 13:48rose sharply from sea level up to the shadow of Diamond Head itself. And
- 13:52we were there in less than ten minutes, but finding number forty four was
- 13:56something else, and another thirty minutes disappeared before we finally poked away from the
- 14:00place, which is Glass corner Wood, and they can't find the front door
- 14:03without a blueprints. I'd beat behind a thick grove of bake palms. That's
- 14:07all the driver back down the hill without losing this movie, and I stepped
- 14:09into the grounds and definitely moved toward the house. So what I thought was
- 14:13the trunk of another palm tree stepped into my past stop where you are at
- 14:20the top, which was over six and a half feet, there's a shock
- 14:22of flaming red hair. The whole frame was half covered in dirty yellow shirt.
- 14:26Once upon a time, white ducks and battered brown sandals. God daylight,
- 14:30it would have looked worse. Phew, were you someone with an appointment
- 14:35to see as Callier? Why you belong to this place? Yes? And
- 14:37this place belongs to me as well, all of it, Missus Carlier included,
- 14:43She's mine to protect. You understand that Malahini follow it Malahini green tourists
- 14:50the kind that I hate, and it's ravaging all this beautiful seeming the islands
- 14:54from those to whom they belong to Take it easy, Red, I'm not
- 14:56here to ravage or stick your pretty island into my when you're not looking.
- 15:01All I want is words with Lenny Keller, who are like the rest of
- 15:03them, crying with cunning with the seat, to turn her head away from
- 15:05these shores and toward the mainland where you come from. I won't stand for
- 15:11it. Look, why don't we break this round table up and get to
- 15:13the house. I'm in a hurry, all right. I'm sure that Landing
- 15:16will be on my side. So should In fact, that we really shouldn't
- 15:20disturb the flower? Should we? Should? We? My Lachini in just
- 15:39a moment the second actor, Phillip Marlow. But first, if mystery and
- 15:43detection are your dish don't forget you can get more of the same over CDs.
- 15:46Tomorrow, for instance, is the day when two unique and widely different
- 15:50sloths make their weekly appearance. One is that well known character Sam Spade,
- 15:54Dashall Hammett's heart boiled private Eye. The other slut, whose adventures are yours
- 16:00every Sunday, is Danny Clover, an old hand on that gaudy street called
- 16:03Broadway. Broadway is my beat, says Danny Clover, and it's a beat
- 16:07where anything can happen. Both Broadway Is My Beat and The Adventures of Sam
- 16:12Spade come to over most of these same CBS Network station. Now with our
- 16:18star Gerald Moore, we returned to the second actress, Phila Marlowe, and
- 16:22tonight's story, The Cloak of Kameya Maya, the red headed lunatic with a
- 16:36slow, soft voice and fast hot fist, took me by surprise and I
- 16:38wound up plat on my back, so I realized it's so much as move.
- 16:42By the time I got to my feet and took after me was sprinting
- 16:45for a bamboo thicket. I had a thirty yard lead, which was all
- 16:48he needed to lose me completely. And I finally untangled myself from the jungle.
- 16:52I came out on the road and I heard a motor behind me,
- 16:56so I dove for the underbrush again, just as a heavy car road by.
- 17:00I'd seen it before, in fact, I'd been in it. It
- 17:03was the limousine that belonged to the Chinaman. The back seat was empty,
- 17:07but the half pair show for Jolo was crouched behind the wheel. Drove out
- 17:10of sight, like his life to front the water. As I walked back
- 17:14toward the house, I saw that the door was standing open and spilling a
- 17:17shaft of yellow light across the dark grounds. Started up the walk when it
- 17:21came and a second lady, Lenny Kaya, burst into the path of light
- 17:23and ran to the open door. I went after a corn I want ham
- 17:26and spun around. Don't let me go? What happened? Why did you
- 17:30scream? Running in the year. I came up. I found him,
- 17:37Come on, show me. I talked to him. I gave him a
- 17:42cloth. Now it's conning. He's dead with the knife in his dad.
- 17:48What the oh, brother? Who is it running? You know? Hm?
- 18:00That's Philip Maltam. I made chromes Lenny tag that came in the lily
- 18:07pond with my name. He was faced down in the shallow water and three
- 18:11inches of crooked steel, the ugly cob handle of a Chris stuck straight up
- 18:17between his shoulder blades. Somebody had made a very grim mistake. But it
- 18:22took five minutes of argument and the thorough checking of all the credentials I carried
- 18:26to convince the badly frightened runner. I dragged the body out of the water
- 18:29and up onto the grass. Then I went to his pockets a card,
- 18:34Oh yeah, from the Hawaiian Island Art Products Company Limited me on the twelve
- 18:41Harbor Street. You mean anything, No, I never heard it. Put
- 18:47on the back light. Number departs the time of the plane I was supposed
- 18:49to take out of Los Angeles for three years. He's been one jump ahead
- 18:53of me all the time, right up to a Lily Kan. He was
- 18:59anyone with him when you gave the cloak, half casting the choke his uniformference.
- 19:02No, I gave him the cloak. Justic Shender had inspe listen,
- 19:07Ronna. There was a down at the heel redhead here just before you came
- 19:10out. He claimed to be a friend of yours. That was Lawrence cockran
- 19:12the poet. That guy's a poet. Yeah, at least he was going
- 19:18to be one grateful one years ago about two lovers who leaped together over Apollo.
- 19:23Oh he keeps him being setlated and their souls turned into bed It's still
- 19:29very popular here on the oll. What happened then? Oh, then he's
- 19:33got the habit of drowning and stuff in gin. Now the lady's calling a
- 19:37poli's occazy. That's closer. He's always hanging around. I suppose he still
- 19:41believes he's in love with her. He's not so crazy. My mother wanted
- 19:47me to marry him at one time. Now that she's dead, he thinks
- 19:49he shouldn't take him. Okay, Lonnie, and let him keep thinking.
- 19:52So what do you mean? I mean, you can use a good watch
- 19:56dog right now. So when Cochlan comes back, you make him park on
- 19:59your doorstep and was staying inside, And be careful. The guy's named Philip
- 20:03Marlow getting knives in their backs. I've got a few things to do myself
- 20:06with Faz. I like to borrow that souped up convertible of the oars.
- 20:08Where are you going? Number twelve Harbor Street and the Hawaiian Island Art Products
- 20:14Company Limited. Arba Street was a narrow, twisting alley two blocks below King
- 20:26Street, a kind of social sagesso where the derelicts of the Pacific quietly founded
- 20:32and dives built into the damp crevices between warehouses. However, number twelve turned
- 20:37out to be practically a blank wall. There was one small window high up,
- 20:41a door with a heavy iron grill over the glass on which Hawaiian Island
- 20:45Art Products Limited ik Lee President was painted in small black letters, and a
- 20:49thin passageway blocked by an iron gate at the side of the building. A
- 20:53light burned in the side that the door was locked. So, after I'd
- 20:56ruined my shoeshine and skinned all my knuckles, I managed to climb over a
- 21:00game an edge down the passageway to the rear, where I could hear water.
- 21:03Along there was a marble fountain playing in the center of a walled gardener's
- 21:07Orientalies for Bidden City. I eased the cross it's rigid dainteness to an open
- 21:12door, peek in, and then reached my gun. Because sitting inside with
- 21:17a sleep white mahogany desk of the Chinaman and the gray Panama. This is
- 21:23a somewhat unexpected ton of events. Please be carefully, gun. You'll be
- 21:30carefully and you won't have to worry about the gun. I'll tell me something.
- 21:33Why'd you break connect to get Tomaa's cloak anyway? No, it will
- 21:37happen if you would try to sell it. Oh right, good man,
- 21:41I can tell that cloak every day for the rest of my life. A
- 21:44fash. The world must be full of feather collectors, him manufacturer. If
- 21:52you told father lake islanders were on the heights while the bird is extinct,
- 21:56the desire for it one or two golden mammo feathers in each leave one hundred
- 22:04dollars of the Now do you understand you? If that thing's a little mixed
- 22:12up, actually powerful? Your boy Marlow is dead at Atlantic Collier's place.
- 22:18Oh no, that was on the sub lake and easily expected a gentlemen I
- 22:22had on the excuse you only pretended to be you would accept the feather cloak.
- 22:33I've known all about put planxception. I followed every movie. Is that
- 22:40it was I who caused all the other On the way to the airport this
- 22:41morning by means of a god. To your driver, answer the one,
- 22:45yeah too, bad. You won't be able to keep your nest lined with
- 22:48them as breathrow after all, because I'm going to walk out of here with
- 22:52it all big chunks of your person. Now name it the cloak now mm
- 22:56hm, I'm the gather from this. You don't have it. Marlow showed
- 23:00observation, and the shinder, as I suspected, has us. Darling La,
- 23:03I'm morning and start talking. That's all I wanted to find out.
- 23:07Go ahead, that is due, though, mister Marlow almost magic with me.
- 23:15Do look and break your back up our telling him to Marlow, so
- 23:18you behave Shinda has the cloak, no doubt about it. So I must
- 23:23find him at once with no interference from you. So dollow who has gone
- 23:30knock him inside? Keep Mallow until I call. I may meet him later.
- 23:37It's something the half cast a gun to my spine at the edge of
- 23:40his hand. My legs were paralyzed. I felt like the practice down me
- 23:44in a school for chira practice. Every joint in my body ache when I
- 23:48moved, so I didn't move into a feeling those back into my less and
- 23:53then I wabbled my feet and looked heart. There was the small high window
- 23:59and seen street, every chair, a desk with a lamp, and something
- 24:03like a picture framed in vampoo on the wall. I glanced at it and
- 24:07then and I looked back. He kept looking hard for a long long time
- 24:12until I finally realized what it meant. Answer to the whole thing was contained
- 24:18in that bamboo frame. I had to get out, and get out fast.
- 24:22I unplugged the lamp, plastered my back against the wall next to the
- 24:25door, and tapped on the lamp shade to and trigged Jolo into coming in.
- 24:29It worked, and the knob turned slowly. I threw the lamp up
- 24:32at the window. A crash brought the door open with a jerk, and
- 24:34Jolo stepped in with my gun in his hand. What he's going on here,
- 24:37mister mutt, Well, where are you right here? Come on,
- 24:45get up. I've got some magic to show you now. That trick I
- 24:48laned in Kansas called a hay mad. I ran down the whole of the
- 24:56street door and out of the car. There was no traffic problem at that
- 24:59hour, so I jammed guest cut of the floor and held it there right
- 25:00through the heart of Honolulu and up the twisting road that led to the mountains
- 25:03back of the city. The echoing roar of the motor is a tunnel through
- 25:07the forest. Lining The road was finally replaced by another raw wind, the
- 25:11unending gale that shrieks through a precipitous past three thousand feet above the city.
- 25:15The Polly. I swung the card to the side of the road and ran
- 25:18the rest of the way out to where the rocks rose to a knife edge
- 25:21that dropped a sheer thousand feet to the valley floor. And I spotted him
- 25:25Lanny, lying stunned at the cliff's edge, and standing over her, his
- 25:27red hair ripped by the wind. Was the mad Island poet, drunk as
- 25:30a lord, and flattening around his shoulders like a pair of huge gold wings.
- 25:34Was the cloak of Camea. Oh, don't weep my load. I
- 25:38offer you the freedom of the girl. Colney. You're the mad one.
- 25:48You can tell your treasure to leave the island. Your mesty is here.
- 25:56The one shinload can killed this cunning of the man who gave the coat to
- 26:02him. I killed thousand times to keep you here with me. You belong
- 26:06to the island's money like this doke and I do. We must Emily come
- 26:11and HOPI of a soon and our souls full tons of birds, and live
- 26:17forever in this paraconda. Don't in the beer money, honey, I know,
- 26:34I know, I know, all right, Lenny, Yes, I
- 26:40know. Look Hawker must have lost it as he fell. We had brought
- 26:45it back here to me. I don't want to touge it ever again.
- 26:48I know what you mean. Come on, baby, I'll carry it for
- 26:52you. Let's get out of here. Yeah. Ah, nothing like ham
- 27:15An ancient put black coffee in the morning, so to make one forget an
- 27:18ugrey night like my friends. Absolutely right, coffee, nice Lannie. So
- 27:22Lee was picked up on the little place. Yeah, sure, I had
- 27:26it all set up. He spent some time in prison, and that,
- 27:29by the way, he was still unconscious when you got to him world and
- 27:33feels he has it mostly that's when you got away the poll. Yeah,
- 27:38but how did you know it was law? Well, it all tied in
- 27:41with that one popular poem, cock Grinie. That anonymous letter you got in
- 27:45Los Angeles, mister Schindler was a line from that poem. And my house
- 27:52will bring no less than that. How did you find that out? Well,
- 27:56when I was locked up in Lee's factory. I saw a full copy
- 27:59of that poem on the wall, little bamboo prayer. When I came to
- 28:02the line you just quote it, it stuck out like it was putting me
- 28:04on that peg. Cochran as the killer. Once I had that, I
- 28:07tried to look at things from his angle. He was a murderer, sure
- 28:11to be caught, desperately in love, and sanely possessive of everything he thought
- 28:15belonged here on the islands. And he was an unbalanced lush as well.
- 28:18So all the rest of it figured, that's all. And when he was
- 28:21calling it, he went back to the one important everything exactly Baby. He
- 28:26was lost. So he identified himself with a hero of his poem. And
- 28:29but that is the only way out. Amisian fully, and am Asian a
- 28:34terrible thing. Who knows. But we all got what we went after,
- 28:38didn't we, each of us? The lines cockran after Shindler left to catch
- 28:56a plane for the mainland, and Lane said aloha and left to get right
- 29:00to grow. A day, I sat on the lanai of the hotel,
- 29:03watched the sweep of the Pacific fun Diamond tap the hills across the harbor,
- 29:10from the white sands of whitey Keys, the green shadows over the reef,
- 29:15with the purple depths beyond. There's a warm wind whispered to the palms.
- 29:21The natives strummed a jukuilele under a Banian tree. I heard Monny whisper.
- 29:30There's a The Adventures of Philip marlow created by Raymond Chandler, star Gerald Moore
- 30:00and are produced and directed by Norman McDonald. Script is by Meldon la Robert
- 30:04Mitchell and Gene Levitt. Featured in the cast was Barry Kroger with Lorette,
- 30:08Phil Brandt, John Dayner, Paul Freeze, Byron Kine and Clark Gordon.
- 30:11The special music is by Richard o'uran. He sure and be with us again
- 30:19next week. When Philip Marlowe says, a thick fog that clung to Los
- 30:26Angeles made searching for the girl who was going to kill herself slow and easy,
- 30:30And in the end, I'd have settled for that and more, because
- 30:33murder happened twice before I found the lady in me. Fifty two thousand dollars
- 30:49A nice pocket full of change to have around, isn't it well? The
- 30:52chance to win it comes your way again. Just a little later tonight when
- 30:56CBS's giant one hour quiz show Sing It Again, come to you over most
- 31:00of these same stations. This is Roy Rowan speaking. Now stay tuned for
- 31:06Gangbusters, which follows immediately over most of these same stations. This is CBS,
- 31:15the Columbia Broadcasting System, Welcome back. When the app was first introduced,
- 31:33the first version of the app had it so you could have an actual
- 31:38extra, just a general extra set for the whole app. And I had
- 31:44this program set as the extra that listeners could listen to because it's a great
- 31:51detective story. The one thing is there's just so much a plot and turns
- 32:00in it. It's one of those programs where you look up and you say,
- 32:05is this all really just in half an hour? Some fun characters,
- 32:09a great concept, and I love the ending. It's also nice to move
- 32:15Philip Marlowe out of la for an episode, something that was done very well
- 32:22back in The Lonesome Reunion done equally well here. And the mad Poet is
- 32:27villain just genius and I think a real hard boiled story. Now it's time
- 32:32for some listener comments and feedback. John asked a question, I love the
- 32:40show. Will you ever broadcast Broadway as My Beat? Yes, yes,
- 32:46I really do hope to do so. You can see a list of all
- 32:50the programs we hope to do over at Big Less, Great Detectives dot Net.
- 33:00Broadways My Beat is on there. It's a really going to be a
- 33:02really tough series to fit in just because of how many episodes are out there.
- 33:10It has one hundred and sixty three episodes in circulation, and of the
- 33:19series we haven't done yet, only Boston Blackie has a bigger archive of program
- 33:25So when we do Broadways My Baby, we're going to be looking at three
- 33:30years plus to get through it. And of course, Broadways My Beat is
- 33:34a show that you have to balance out. I love the show, but
- 33:38I know many people find it kind of depressing. I like the poetry and
- 33:44the feeling of the start of the show and kind of just the realism of
- 33:50how Danny Clover reacts to things. It's not, I would say, entirely
- 33:54realistic, but it's just a wonderful piece of art. But I also have
- 34:00to have a balance in there, which means, of course, when we
- 34:04do Broadways My Beat, we'll have to avoid any shows that could be seen
- 34:07as similarly depressing, so we won't have a night be going when we're doing
- 34:13Broadways my beat. But yeah, absolutely we're going to get to that.
- 34:19They'll just take some time, so stay tuned, and I appreciate everyone's patience.
- 34:22Well, that will do it for today. Join us back here tomorrow
