- 0:00Welcome everybody to Becker's Healthcare Podcast.
- 0:03I'm Rich Zane, chief medical officer and chief
- 0:05innovation officer at UCHealth in Colorado.
- 0:09Today's prescribing journey is more complex than ever,
- 0:12with health systems navigating rising costs, fragmented data,
- 0:16growing expectations for transparency from both providers and
- 0:19patients,
- 0:20not to mention the crushing administrative and regulatory
- 0:23burden. Too often,
- 0:25the breakdown between prescribing
- 0:27and prescription fulfillment creates friction that impacts access,
- 0:31adherence,
- 0:32provider satisfaction,
- 0:34pharmacy performance,
- 0:35and patient outcomes.
- 0:37In today's conversation, we'll explore where those breakdowns
- 0:40most often occur
- 0:42and how trusted real time data intelligence
- 0:45and connected workflows can support more confident prescribing
- 0:48decisions,
- 0:49improve patient access and affordability,
- 0:51and strengthen health system pharmacy strategy.
- 0:55I'm joined today by Josh Weiner,
- 0:57former CEO of DoseSpot and current CEO of
- 1:00Entera Health, as well as Kyle Kaiser, former
- 1:03CEO of Arrive Health and current board member
- 1:06and senior advisor
- 1:08to Entera
- 1:09Health. Both bring deep experience across e prescribing,
- 1:13pharmacy benefit visibility,
- 1:15and point of care clinical decision support.
- 1:18Josh, Kyle, it's a pleasure to be speaking
- 1:20with you today on behalf of Becker's Healthcare
- 1:23Podcast.
- 1:24Great to be here. Thanks for having us,
- 1:26Rich. Before we dive in, tell me a
- 1:28little bit about Entera Health. Today's a big
- 1:30day for you.
- 1:31It is. It's a huge day.
- 1:34We,
- 1:36we are now forming
- 1:38a brand new organization
- 1:40that is built on decades
- 1:43of experience
- 1:44on all these topics that we'll explore today.
- 1:48Our
- 1:49company is Entera
- 1:50Health.
- 1:51It's the combination
- 1:53of Arrive Health and
- 1:55DoseSpot.
- 1:57And we are putting
- 1:59these two organizations
- 2:02together
- 2:03in pursuit
- 2:04of
- 2:05one platform
- 2:07for medication
- 2:08affordability
- 2:09and
- 2:10access.
- 2:11Yeah. I think
- 2:12the important point too that we're bringing together
- 2:15is,
- 2:16it's kind of the best of breed in
- 2:19both companies coming together is that we took
- 2:21what DoseSpot had established, which is a market
- 2:24leadership
- 2:25around,
- 2:27affordability content, around patient
- 2:30capabilities and deprescribing capabilities and and medical benefit
- 2:33eligibility, and we're now bringing that together with,
- 2:37our
- 2:38Arrive Health's market leadership
- 2:40in,
- 2:41in real time benefit and EPA and and
- 2:43then network reach that that provides. And those
- 2:46two things together create really a paradigm shifting
- 2:49opportunity,
- 2:50for the combined platform.
- 2:52So as a provider who prescribes and a
- 2:54patient who gets prescriptions, thank you in advance
- 2:57for the incredible work you're gonna be doing.
- 2:59It's sounds exciting.
- 3:01So based on your experience,
- 3:03where do you see the most common breakdowns
- 3:05between a provider
- 3:07prescribing
- 3:08and a patient
- 3:09getting the medication?
- 3:11How do you think those gaps impact health
- 3:13system performance
- 3:15and maybe even patient trust?
- 3:18You know, this is, it's gonna be a
- 3:20little bit like quoting the song lyrics of
- 3:22your favorite songwriter to your favorite songwriter, answering
- 3:24this question to you, Rich. But the problem
- 3:27still exists that providers have, limited visibility to
- 3:30price at 20 here. And I think where
- 3:32we've advanced that work over the last ten
- 3:35years as Arrive is that, you know, insurance
- 3:38pricing is much more visible and capable and
- 3:40and can be delivered in a quality high
- 3:42quality way for providers that's meaningful decision support
- 3:44now.
- 3:45But the way you pay for medications is
- 3:47not limited to just insurance pricing anymore. So
- 3:49being able to extend
- 3:51the capabilities
- 3:52at the point of care to include things
- 3:54that are more representative of what the patient
- 3:57faces is part of the goal. Is is
- 3:59how do you turn decision support
- 4:01not just from a real time benefit perspective,
- 4:04so meaning, you know, how do we generate
- 4:06an insurance price, but now how do you
- 4:08make real time benefit look like a real
- 4:10patient experience? And and all the ways you
- 4:12could pay and and what all those pharmacy
- 4:15options could be and do it in a
- 4:17way that is, here's where I'm quoting my
- 4:19favorite songwriter,
- 4:21fewer clicks, not more clicks, easier, not harder,
- 4:23and right every time.
- 4:25So so we're continuing on that scene. What
- 4:27role can health systems play in medication affordability
- 4:32and access?
- 4:34We,
- 4:35we see a a big opportunity
- 4:39grounding ourselves in what is the patient experience
- 4:44that you all as health system
- 4:47leaders are delivering or want to deliver
- 4:51in the in the future.
- 4:53And
- 4:54so
- 4:55you can provide patients with with the financial
- 4:58transparency. You can provide patients
- 5:01on their mobile device with an option
- 5:04to get the med delivered or picked up
- 5:07how and where they they want to, and
- 5:10there's a a continuity
- 5:12that's possible there. That's why health systems
- 5:14are so incredible at the work that they
- 5:17do. It's to provide continuous
- 5:19care
- 5:20from a to z and back to a
- 5:22again.
- 5:23And so we want to give you,
- 5:26and pay give everybody in the system the
- 5:29data that they need
- 5:31to get the meds that they that they
- 5:32need. Affordability
- 5:33is is one of the biggest barriers. We
- 5:35we can we can address that from an
- 5:37experience perspective.
- 5:39Yeah. The reality is that the the burden
- 5:41often falls on the provider either way.
- 5:45And or the provider organization, either way. Because
- 5:48the first call the patients wanna make when
- 5:49they have questions about their meds is to
- 5:50their provider because that's where they've established trust,
- 5:53and that's where the most trust resides in
- 5:55the value chain.
- 5:57And so providers are going to be answering
- 5:59those questions one way or another from patients.
- 6:02Our goal is to give them the tools
- 6:03and the right data to make sure that
- 6:05they can do that efficiently.
- 6:06They can do it in ways that help,
- 6:08improve continuity of care for the health system
- 6:10overall because that's where, you know, finding the
- 6:12right pharmacy and, you know, more often than
- 6:15not, that's gonna be the health system's pharmacy
- 6:16if if we're putting the right tools in
- 6:18place,
- 6:20is is part of the goal. It's how
- 6:21you start to turn that, what's today an
- 6:24administrative burden into
- 6:26a meaningful business opportunity for the health system
- 6:29and better patient outcomes.
- 6:31So let's talk a little bit about transparency
- 6:34to patients
- 6:35and putting patients at the center of this
- 6:37conversation.
- 6:39So if I'm a patient and you're
- 6:42prescribing for me,
- 6:44I need to know how much it's gonna
- 6:46cost me.
- 6:47But I also need to know that
- 6:49the prescription and the way it's being prescribed
- 6:52and where it's being prescribed is in my
- 6:54best interest.
- 6:56What type of fidelity
- 6:58will you have to ensure that?
- 7:00But in the spirit of reducing
- 7:03clicks
- 7:04and
- 7:05making the the holes
- 7:07you know, the often the best technology is
- 7:10the technology that we can't
- 7:12see, and I think that's the promise
- 7:15of some of these Agentic
- 7:18AI prototypes is that we're not even engaging
- 7:21in the technology.
- 7:22And that flies in the face of an
- 7:24addictive
- 7:25gamification
- 7:26app. So
- 7:27I can see the argument both ways, Rich.
- 7:31Yeah. I think it's,
- 7:33I almost wanna expand the definition to incentives.
- 7:35Right? Because when you think about gamification,
- 7:38the folks who use gamified tools are the
- 7:40not the ones that you need to engage
- 7:42with to drive down health care costs and
- 7:43improve outcomes. The you know, it's like the
- 7:45eighty twenty rule, and you're you're gonna engage
- 7:47with the the least
- 7:49sick and the least in need. And to
- 7:51drive a better outcome, you've got to engage
- 7:53with the folks that aren't ever going to
- 7:55engage with the Gamify tool.
- 7:57And what I think
- 7:58is exciting about the pharma value chain generally
- 8:02is formulary's
- 8:03cost complexity
- 8:05is its own form of gamification. And so
- 8:07how do we bring those
- 8:09collective incentives
- 8:10to bear for the most,
- 8:12in need patient population? Because that's where you
- 8:14can drive a big impact on cost and
- 8:16complexity.
- 8:17So probably one of the most brilliant minds
- 8:20in health care innovation three of us know
- 8:22and most of the people listening will have
- 8:24heard of, Kimberly Mueller, who's the vice chancellor
- 8:27for innovation and biotechnology
- 8:29at University of Colorado,
- 8:30is
- 8:31frequently quoted as saying that healthcare is over
- 8:34innovative
- 8:35and under transformed.
- 8:38What are your thoughts?
- 8:40I I,
- 8:41as you know, strongly agree with that perspective.
- 8:44And and part of it is because the
- 8:46real work
- 8:48is not flashy. The real work is not
- 8:51high sizzle technology often. It's dish digging. It's
- 8:55how do you build the right connectivity
- 8:57to the right workflows
- 8:58to meet the right users where they are,
- 9:00both patients, providers, and care team. And and
- 9:03that's that's been a lot of the work
- 9:05of of both of our organizations over the
- 9:08last many years.
- 9:10And and I think the mentality,
- 9:12you know, that sort of blue collar mentality
- 9:15of willing to roll your sleeves up and
- 9:16do the work to integrate in the right
- 9:17places and to get the right data integrations
- 9:19and to to get to the right patients
- 9:21in the right ways
- 9:23is absolutely the approach. Because that's
- 9:25that's what it takes for transformation,
- 9:28right, is to actually do the unglamorous
- 9:30parts of
- 9:32connecting the these legacy systems into new capabilities
- 9:36and and driving a different outcome.
- 9:38So Kyle, Josh,
- 9:40as two leaders
- 9:41in health care technology and as a provider,
- 9:45can I get you to commit
- 9:47on the record
- 9:49that entera health
- 9:50will be easier not harder,
- 9:53path of least resistance, fewer clicks not more
- 9:55clicks, and bulletproof right?
- 9:58I hereby make that commitment.
- 10:00Considering we were born out of the Care
- 10:03Innovation Center there in on the Anschutz campus,
- 10:06and that was
- 10:07the that was the bible. That's always the
- 10:09aspiration.
- 10:10Awesome. Well, Josh, Kyle, thank you both for
- 10:12your time today. I'm excited to see what
- 10:15Arrive Health and DoseSpot do together as in
- 10:18Terra Health.
- 10:19Thank you. Thank you. This is it. Take
- 10:21care.
