- 0:04>> Dr. Terry Simpson: In 2025, the Mediterranean diet
- 0:07has again climbed to the top spot as the
- 0:09best overall diet. And it's not just
- 0:12because of its delicious flavors or health benefits. It's
- 0:15rooted in science, sustainability and
- 0:18practicality. Whether you're trying to lose weight, manage a
- 0:21chronic condition, or simply live a longer, healthier
- 0:24life, the Mediterranean Diet continues to
- 0:27provide a framework that works. But why
- 0:30does it keep topping the charts year after
- 0:33year? In today's episode of 4Q, I'm going
- 0:36to break down why the Mediterranean Diet is still the best
- 0:39choice in 2025 and what it can do for your
- 0:42health and how you can make it a part of your
- 0:45life.
- 0:48I am your Chief Medical Explanationist, Dr.
- 0:51Terri Simpson, and this is Forku Fork
- 0:54University, where we make sense of the madness, bust a
- 0:57few myths and teach you a little bit about food. Food
- 1:00as Medicine
- 1:04the Mediterranean Diet isn't just
- 1:07about eating food from the Mediterranean
- 1:10region. It's a broad set of
- 1:12principles based on a way of life that
- 1:15prioritizes fresh, minimally processed foods,
- 1:18a high intake of plant based foods, healthy
- 1:20fats, lean proteins and an overall
- 1:23balanced approach to eating. While it's true
- 1:26the Mediterranean Diet has inspired this diet,
- 1:29it's not about following some rigid list of
- 1:32foods. It's all about the way food
- 1:35is consumed and the lifestyle surrounding
- 1:37it. In essence, the
- 1:40Mediterranean Diet is an algorithm, not a
- 1:43fixed menu. It's about eating fresh,
- 1:45nutrient dense foods that align with healthy
- 1:48balance of micronutrients and macronutrients.
- 1:51Its flexibility makes it adaptable
- 1:54worldwide, offering guidance on how to structure
- 1:56meal while embracing local cultures and
- 1:59tastes. So why did U.S. news
- 2:02and World Report rank the Mediterranean
- 2:05diet one in 2025
- 2:07again for the multinth year in a row?
- 2:10And let's see, not only was it picked
- 2:13as a top diet for overall health, but
- 2:16they listed it as the number one diet for people who have
- 2:19diabetes. For people who have
- 2:21prediabetes, the Mediterranean Diet, in multiple
- 2:24research papers has been shown to help control blood
- 2:26sugar levels, preventing insulin resistance and making
- 2:29it a top choice for managing diabetes.
- 2:32It was also listed as the number one diet for gut
- 2:35health. Its high fiber content, rich
- 2:38in fruits and vegetables and whole grains, supports
- 2:41a healthy microbiome which plays a
- 2:43pivotal role in digestive health, immune
- 2:46function and even mental health.
- 2:49Not surprisingly, the Mediterranean Diet was listed as number
- 2:52one for heart health because it's packed with heart
- 2:55healthy fats like olive oil, fatty fish,
- 2:58reducing the risk of heart disease, strokes, high
- 3:00cholesterol and studies have long shown
- 3:03its ability to lower inflammation and improve Blood
- 3:06pressure. Never forget the Leon heart study which
- 3:09showed that people who had their heart attack the therefore
- 3:11had cardiac disease when they were placed on a
- 3:14Mediterranean diet, had
- 3:1675% fewer second heart
- 3:19attacks than those who were not. The
- 3:22Mediterranean diet was listed as the number one diet for people who have fatty
- 3:25liver disease. For those struggling with fatty liver disease,
- 3:28the Mediterranean's emphasis on healthy
- 3:31fats, lean proteins and antioxidants
- 3:34offers a solid approach,
- 3:36and a solid approach in multiple
- 3:39studies, peer reviewed to improving liver health
- 3:42and decreasing fat in the liver.
- 3:45It's not surprising to many of us that it was the number one diet
- 3:48for people who have arthritis or inflammatory conditions.
- 3:51The diet has long been listed in multiple published
- 3:54studies to have anti inflammatory
- 3:56properties. Part of this is thanks to the olive oil, the nuts, the
- 3:59fatty fish, but also the
- 4:01phytonutrients found in the fresh fruits and the
- 4:04vegetables. One of the reasons the
- 4:07Mediterranean diet continues to top health rankings
- 4:10is its ability to improve multiple areas of
- 4:12health simultaneously. It's not just about weight loss
- 4:15or managing specific conditions. It's about
- 4:18overall well being. Let's take heart disease
- 4:21even from the beginning. In the studies in the 1950s,
- 4:24they have shown that this type of diet, the Mediterranean
- 4:27diet, significantly reduces the risk of heart disease
- 4:30by promoting healthy fats like olive oil and fish and
- 4:33lowering the bad cholesterol. The diet also
- 4:36is very good at regulating blood pressure and reducing
- 4:39arterial inflammation and stiffness. Yep,
- 4:42you don't want those arteries inflamed. What about brain
- 4:44health? It turns out that the Mediterranean
- 4:47diets can help protect against
- 4:50cognitive decline, including Alzheimer's
- 4:52disease. It enhances cognitive function by
- 4:55promoting healthy brain fats and antioxidants that
- 4:58fight fight oxidative stress. And
- 5:01while weight loss may be the number one
- 5:04New Year's resolution, we certainly have better
- 5:07medications for it. But in terms of weight loss, the
- 5:09Mediterranean diet approach encourages foods that
- 5:12support healthy weight management.
- 5:15With its focus on vegetables, lean proteins, healthy fats,
- 5:18the Mediterranean diet can help you feel full longer while
- 5:21preventing blood sugar spikes. And
- 5:24for those who've had weight loss surgery, or those
- 5:27patients who were on GLP1 medications like
- 5:29Ozempic or Tirzepizide,
- 5:31Wegovy, zepbound, this is
- 5:34the diet we prefer patients concentrate
- 5:37on.
- 5:39Let's talk about why the Mediterranean diet is the best option
- 5:42for 2025 and beyond. It's easy to follow, it's
- 5:44flexible, and most importantly, it's sustainable for the long
- 5:48term. Health sustainability,
- 5:50that's a key word because Mediterranean
- 5:53diet not only has long term benefits without requiring
- 5:56Drastic changes in the lifestyle. It emphasizes
- 5:59fresh, seasonal produce, whole grains, healthy fats,
- 6:01making it easy to incorporate that into your
- 6:04routine without feeling restricted.
- 6:07And remember, frozen fruits and frozen
- 6:10vegetables are picked at the peak time
- 6:13of ripeness and are just as healthy and good for
- 6:16you as as the fresh ones. This isn't
- 6:19a diet that tells you to cut out whole food groups. Instead,
- 6:22it encourages variety and balance, which is
- 6:25essential to maintaining long term health.
- 6:27You can easily adapt it to different cuisines or food
- 6:30preferences, making it a versatile choice for anyone,
- 6:33no matter where they live. And I'm going to give you two examples of this in
- 6:36just a bit. It's not just a food plan, it's a
- 6:39lifestyle. It encourages mindful eating, proper
- 6:42portion sizes, enjoying meals with family and friends. Not
- 6:45about dieting, but developing a healthy
- 6:48relationship with food.
- 6:50Let's break down how you can incorporate this into your daily meals.
- 6:53It's easier than you might think, so start with these simple
- 6:56guidelines. The Mediterranean diet emphasizes
- 6:59an abundant intake of fruits and vegetables. We
- 7:02want you to aim for about 9 ounces or 250
- 7:05grams of vegetables and fruits daily.
- 7:08This can mean eating three to five servings
- 7:10of vegetables or two to four servings of fruit each day.
- 7:13We want you to focus on variety,
- 7:16seasonability, ensuring that you're getting a wide variety
- 7:19of nutrients and antioxidants so the vegetables
- 7:22and the fruits can serve as a foundation of your
- 7:24plate as well as snacks and desserts. Whole
- 7:27grains that we talked about before is a cornerstone of the Mediterranean
- 7:30diet. We want at least 250 grams of whole grains a day.
- 7:33They can include food like whole wheat
- 7:36bread, whole wheat pasta,
- 7:38quinoa, barley, oats or
- 7:41brown rice. Whole grains are a
- 7:44powerhouse of fiber and they help support
- 7:47digestion and manage blood sugar levels. What about
- 7:50legumes? We love legumes. Legumes
- 7:53are things like beans, lentils, chickpeas. They're an important
- 7:55source of plant based protein and fiber.
- 7:58We want people to incorporate a couple of ounces of legumes
- 8:01each day. You can add them to soups, salads, make them
- 8:04into dips like hummus. But they provide an essential
- 8:07source of vitamins and minerals, making them
- 8:10a great complement to a diet's overall
- 8:13nutrient profile. And people
- 8:16think that this is low fat. It's not a low fat diet.
- 8:18Probably 30% of the calories come from fats, but they
- 8:21are healthy fats. Olive oil is a cornerstone of the
- 8:24Mediterranean diet, providing heart healthy monounsaturated
- 8:27fat. And we think that you should use olive oil in
- 8:30cooking. Drizzling it over vegetables, using it as a salad
- 8:33dressing. Other sources of great fats are fatty fish
- 8:36like salmon, sardines, mackerel, and we want you to get
- 8:38two servings of fish a week. Now, if you don't like fish
- 8:41or can't tolerate fish, we still want you to
- 8:44use olive oil and try and incorporate those
- 8:47healthy fats in your diet. Dairy is certainly
- 8:50allowed, but we want you to focus more on low fat or fat free
- 8:53options like Greek yogurt or cheese. And while it's part
- 8:56of the Mediterranean diet, it's typically limited to smaller
- 8:59amounts. But but the emphasis is on fermented
- 9:01dairy like yogurt, which really supports gut health.
- 9:05Now, many assume that alcohol is unlimited in the Mediterranean
- 9:08diet. It's actually quite restricted. In fact, you get a
- 9:11Mediterranean diet 0.1 out of the 9 if you have
- 9:14no alcohol in a given day, or if you limit your
- 9:16alcohol to no more than a five ounce pour of red
- 9:19wine or its equivalent. Excessive alcohol
- 9:22intake means you don't get that valued
- 9:25points. There's some misconceptions about the Mediterranean
- 9:28diet we need to clear up. One, it's too
- 9:30expensive. While it's true some of the Mediterranean
- 9:33diet staples like olive oil and fatty fish can be costly,
- 9:36there are plenty of budget friendly options. You
- 9:39don't have to buy the fancy ingredients to eat like
- 9:42Mediterraneans. You can put on affordable seasonal
- 9:45vegetables, canned beans and less expensive fish
- 9:47like sardines, mackerel or canned tuna. Some
- 9:50people think it's only for the Mediterranean. And while the
- 9:53Mediterranean diet was inspired by the eating habits of some
- 9:56of the countries along the Mediterranean coast, its
- 9:59principles can be applied anywhere. The idea
- 10:02is to focus on fresh whole foods,
- 10:04healthy fats, regardless of
- 10:07location. Some people think it's all about olive oil and fish.
- 10:10While those are staples, it also includes a wide
- 10:13variety of vegetables, whole grains, legumes, nuts and
- 10:15fruits. It's about balance.
- 10:18Now, the beauty of the Mediterranean diet is it's adaptable to
- 10:21any cuisine. For example, a fish
- 10:24taco from Mexican cuisine can be adapted to fit the
- 10:27Mediterranean diet. You can use a whole grain
- 10:30tortilla, which provides fiber. Top it with grilled
- 10:33fish like salmon or tilapia or shrimp, which are rich in heart,
- 10:36healthy omega 3s. Add a salsa made from seasonal
- 10:38fruits. Think mango, pineapple, tomatoes. Top it
- 10:41with a crunchy layer of shredded cabbage for fiber boost.
- 10:44And don't forget the beans, even if they're
- 10:47refried beans, because you've got a Mediterranean inspired
- 10:50taco that's packed with healthy fats. Fiber,
- 10:53protein, fruits and vegetables.
- 10:56Similarly, consider Indian cuisine which you
- 10:59can create from a chana masala and a whole wheat
- 11:02roti. Chickpeas rich in fiber and protein pair
- 11:05perfectly with a tomato based curry spiced
- 11:08with turmeric, cumin and coriander. Serve it
- 11:10with whole wheat roti for added fiber. This dish
- 11:13embodies the Mediterranean principle of ah,
- 11:16plant based eating and balanced nutrition.
- 11:19Yes, you can be a vegetarian or vegan and
- 11:22eat on the Mediterranean diet. The Mediterranean
- 11:25diet is here to stay. And as the world continues to embrace
- 11:28healthy, sustainable food, the Mediterranean
- 11:31approach, that algorithm will only grow in
- 11:34popularity. Whether you're looking to prevent disease, manage
- 11:37your weight, boost your overall health, this diet
- 11:39provides that timeless blueprint for
- 11:42healthy eating. It's flexible, it's science
- 11:45based, and it's a matter of eating that can
- 11:48be delicious. So
- 11:51in 2025, the Mediterranean diet remains the
- 11:54best choice for anyone seeking long term
- 11:56health. And this was in a group of
- 11:59registered dietitians, people who have
- 12:02PhDs in nutrition, and physicians who are interested
- 12:05in nutrition from managing chronic
- 12:07diseases like diabetes, heart disease, promoting
- 12:10brain health, decreasing cognitive decline. The
- 12:13Mediterranean Diet is the holistic approach that empowers you
- 12:16to do the best thing you can do for your diet. Doesn't mean you won't get
- 12:19these diseases, but this is the best diet to manage
- 12:22them. Please check out our blog
