- 0:02This is an Unspoiled Network podcast. This is spoil Me, covering one piece
- 0:12episodes four ninety six and four ninety seven to the Sea Someday, the Pledge
- 0:18of the Three Brats and leaving the didn family for good. The kids hideout
- 0:24has been built. In these episodes. We are still with Loofy and Ace
- 0:31and Sabo. I didn't think we would hang out with him for this long,
- 0:35but it looks like we've got a few more episodes to go even and
- 0:39I'm actually really really enjoying this little blast from the past, this flash to
- 0:45the past, I like it. Welcome to spoil Me, Welcome to the
- 1:07show everyone. I am Natasha. Thank you very much to Florian for commissioning
- 1:12this episode. I am really enjoying how much info we're getting filled in on,
- 1:19guys, because y'all know that, like from the episode where we find
- 1:25out the basics on where Zorro comes from. And I say basics because we
- 1:30still don't know who Zorro's family is, right, so we saw how he
- 1:38was trained, but he basically seemed to like spring from the Woods, fully
- 1:44formed. I really have been asking where does Lufi come from? Who is
- 1:53his family? How did he get here, and I was surprised at the
- 2:00fact that we weren't given any of that. Like, the only things that
- 2:02we ever saw were him hanging out in the bar with Shanks and how that
- 2:07all went down. But he was already like seven or eight years old in
- 2:13those flashbacks, and even in those there's no real guardian to be seen.
- 2:23We don't actually get any information on how he's being raised, or who's doing
- 2:29the raising or anything like that. So I was sort of like, I'm
- 2:34the way that I'm used to stories like this being told it tends to be
- 2:40first, we're going to have this like kind of hero's journey of like the
- 2:47parents dying and the kid having to figure things out for themselves and struggling through
- 2:53life and eventually being taken in by somebody who's like a second family to them
- 2:59if if they're lucky or what tends to be the case? Even more excuse
- 3:05me, I have the hiccups. I don't know w what is. They
- 3:09were sent to a family that should have been their second family, and those
- 3:15people are awful to them, So this kid has to learn how to survive
- 3:19despite these people who pretty much actively abuse them. Right, But it was
- 3:25so surprising to me that, like we don't get anything about where Lufy's from
- 3:30and what the deal is with his family and how he wound up here,
- 3:36and like, guys, we're almost an episode five hundred and I'm just getting
- 3:42a lot of this information now, and it's still like it's not even like
- 3:46we know who his mother was. It's I don't think she specifically has really
- 3:53been mentioned. I know that Ace's mother carried him for two years or whatever
- 3:59it was and then died, so like, you know, her heroism in
- 4:04not giving birth, it's so like Greek mythish. I do really enjoy that.
- 4:10It's like a very goofy idea in some ways, but it's so over
- 4:15the top that I think it actually works. But I'm still waiting to find
- 4:23out who Lufy's mother was. And it's a shame because it feels like at
- 4:27this point who she is is not really going to matter that much. And
- 4:32I feel a little bit sad about that, because like, if she plays
- 4:38such a small role in his life that we don't really have like any time
- 4:43with her here and no mention of her from him, I have to assume
- 4:47that she also died when he was young, and this is kind of like
- 4:53the only thing that holds me up, And it's a continual issue with this
- 5:00series specifically, But it's not like I'm saying it's the only one that commits
- 5:06the sin. But I don't love the fact that the women are so disposable
- 5:15and the men are always the ones who are notable badasses. It really does
- 5:21frustrate me how male centric this series continues to be. And I am holding
- 5:30out hope that this gets improved upon with time, because you know, we
- 5:35have the uh mister two character played for a joke and then becoming somebody who
- 5:41is like a full fledged friend and badass and sacrifices himself for the sake of
- 5:49everybody. So it's not like this series is incapable of forward movement in terms
- 6:01of the way that it handles portraying people who are not just males and sis
- 6:09males at that. But I am not seeing a lot of evidence so far
- 6:15that that is changing, like at all. We still have so many like
- 6:24pirate groups where either it's all men led by a woman and there's one woman,
- 6:34she's the captain, and that's it. You don't really see women being
- 6:39the pirates in the crew. The only time that there's a woman is if
- 6:45she's in charge, but she can't just like be a part of things.
- 6:48And you have a choice between either women who are attractive in that they look
- 6:55exactly like Nami Robin Boa, whatever, or they are actively drawn as like
- 7:04masculine and like repulsive in some way. It's there's just no in between.
- 7:12There's there's you are either completely like fuckable hottie or revolting. You are square
- 7:24and have a wide jaw, and you're probably older and you don't have like
- 7:30a possible hip to waist ratio. So that's already been a problem with the
- 7:38way that like women just are kind of a non factor except in Lufy's crew,
- 7:43and even in the crew we've just got the two, you know.
- 7:48But also the fact that Lufy and Ace's mothers don't really have any like present
- 7:59influence or notoriety. They are just the women who carried the children of the
- 8:05powerful men that are notorious, and I just want that to not be true.
- 8:15I am hoping that I get thrown a curveball with Loufy and it turns
- 8:20out to be like a different thing than what I'm expecting, or the way
- 8:26it went down sort of like, once it's revealed, I will feel like
- 8:30that sort of makes up for it in some way. But the way that
- 8:33I'm like sitting right now, I'm just feeling kind of like, oh boy,
- 8:37can't we just do something different? So I just wanted to get that
- 8:43out of the way, just off the top. The pledge of the Three
- 8:48Brats. I really enjoy once again, this opening song. I just want
- 8:52to mention that. But I just love that it's the Three Brats because that
- 8:56is the thing that they call kids so much in this series. They throw
- 9:03the word brat around a lot, and we get a ton of training montages
- 9:13here. It's really really fun because what Lufy is doing is he's trying to
- 9:18develop the techniques with his gum gum ability. And I love the way this
- 9:26works because it's so easy to think that this was sort of an automatic thing
- 9:31that he was able to develop because it was an like just the way that
- 9:35you punch. You would just do it the normal way and then your arm
- 9:41would extend and it would be as simple as that. You know that you
- 9:43would just do it because that's the way that your arm moves anyway, And
- 9:48to find out that actually it's like not automatic, at all, that he
- 9:52doesn't have great control. He winds up. The first time we see him
- 9:56try to do like the gumgum pistol, he accidentally like aims wrong and it
- 10:01hits the ground and bounces up and he punches himself in the face, which
- 10:07so embarrassing. And it turns out that this is like all they're doing.
- 10:15They are just fighting one another, and it's one hundred matches a day apparently.
- 10:20And we have Ace like saying to himself it's inside his head that he's
- 10:26never gonna lose a fight to anybody, even Sabo, like, sorry about
- 10:28it, Bud, but that goes for you too, And Sabo, for
- 10:33his part, is saying, I can't stop until I'm stronger than Ace and
- 10:39or till I'm the strongest in the world the two of them. While Ace
- 10:43is definitely like the superior fighter between him and Sabo, the two of them
- 10:50are light years ahead of Loofy. Lufy has never won against either one of
- 10:54them, and he is trying so hard and he really believes that like,
- 11:01well, when I get older, I'll finally be able to like show you
- 11:05two what's up. And they have to be like, you know, when
- 11:07you're older that will also be older, right, Like, do you get
- 11:09that? And it doesn't seem like he does. I don't think he gets
- 11:13that at all. So I'm sorry guys this. I'm just watching the two
- 11:20of them fighting here and it is really really funny to me, the way
- 11:24that they are going at each other, like it it reminds me there's a
- 11:31I wish that I could post things in the chat here, even though there's
- 11:33nobody in the chat today, but there is a video of a couple of
- 11:37like jack rabbits fighting at the side of the road that gets reposted a lot,
- 11:41and they're basically just like their front paws or just like bitty bat bitty
- 11:46bay at each other and it's one of the funniest fights you've ever seen.
- 11:52Like it's so and I'm not trying to say that Sabo and Ace aren't fighting
- 11:56for real. What I'm trying to say is that the two of them are
- 12:03illustrated, as if they're just kind of skibbity bopping on each other and not.
- 12:09It doesn't I believe that it's a real fight, but there's something about
- 12:13it that feels almost like a cat fight for lack of a better term.
- 12:22But yeah, so they're really like taking this seriously though, and I have
- 12:26to admire that because this kind of training and focus is not the sort of
- 12:31thing that you expect out of children. And it makes sense that these are
- 12:35kids that don't have a lot of other options, because they're just like,
- 12:41what else are they going to do other than chores? So fighting, of
- 12:45course that's going to sound much more appealing. And if they have these this
- 12:50competitive spirit, it'll be really motivated to always feel like you're on the verge
- 12:56of out doing one of the others, to keep pushing yourself, you know,
- 12:58it's part of what keeps people competitive with like video games and whatnot.
- 13:05I love the part where Sabo's about to attack Loofy and Lufy just makes this
- 13:09like kind of net out of his fingers, and when Sabo comes up to
- 13:16him, he's like, does he think I'm just gonna run into it?
- 13:20And he runs forward, grabs Lufy's fingers and yanks them back, and then
- 13:24when he lets go, they bounce back into Lufy's face and send him flying
- 13:28in the way. That's like it's like when he like, when somebody's got
- 13:33a rubber band, if you grab it and sort of pull on it and
- 13:35it makes them flinch back. It made me think of that move. So
- 13:43it's just really adorable that Lufy seems to think they're just gonna walk right into
- 13:48this. That is such a kid like this felt like Oda wrote this scene
- 13:56after having played with children and laugh to himself about the way they are because
- 14:03it's so it's so transparent and silly what he's doing, Like you can see
- 14:09right through it, but I could see how a little kid would think they're
- 14:15being really really clever, do you know what I mean? Kids are just
- 14:18they function still on like Looney Tune's logic, so they think they're being sly
- 14:26and doing something that nobody's going to see this coming. And it's like everybody,
- 14:31babe, everybody saw that company. I'm so sorry, but we all
- 14:35knew what you were doing there. So Ace, for his part, is
- 14:41just like you should just learn to fight like a normal person and then you
- 14:48mix in the rubber stuff afterwards. You're trying to do the rubber stuff first
- 14:52and you're not good at it, and you've got to let it go.
- 14:54And Lufy is determined to keep fighting, and I love when he's like,
- 14:58well, you know the rule. It's one hundred matches per day and he
- 15:03has to like make Loofy stop the fact that Lufy has had his ass handed
- 15:07to him the number of times he has in this training day and still wants
- 15:13to keep going. He's got a little bit of a masochistic streak in him,
- 15:16for sure, you know. So they go and they are able to
- 15:24get a crocodile for dinner. Again. I love how Lufy once again can't
- 15:28wait and just throws himself in there. And as they come home, there
- 15:35is the uh, the whole thing with the don basically being like, well,
- 15:39fuck you guys, but they're like, well, we got dinner though,
- 15:43And that keeps being a theme to the point where I was sort of
- 15:46wondering about it, like do these people know how to find food themselves?
- 15:52Like if the kids don't bring home a kill for the day, do they
- 15:58eat or do they depend on these children? And I didn't think they did,
- 16:03and it doesn't seem like they fully do. But there was sort of
- 16:07a suggestion sometimes like everybody is so hungry once they bring food home, like
- 16:11they haven't eaten until now, you know. So we have another moment where
- 16:18we go over to Great Terminal and we see all of the scavengers who are
- 16:22hanging out in the dump waiting for a new load of stuff to come in,
- 16:27and they go through it all and pick out what's good and bring it
- 16:30into the town to sell as recycled goods, and we get to see Lufy.
- 16:37It's like clearly like Loofy's nose, and I was sort of like,
- 16:42wait is it because this figure is way too tall, but it looked like
- 16:49his nose. And the guard stops them and is like, well, what
- 16:53is that and he says, well, it's crocodile skinned. Do you want
- 16:56it? And when he shows the guy, he says, ew, no,
- 17:00just go ahead with it, which I was surprised by because I would
- 17:03have thought this would be sort of valuable, And the fact that the guy
- 17:07immediately rejected it, I was like, huh, I would have thought he'd
- 17:10want it. But once they get inside the grounds, it seems like that's
- 17:15when we start to find other people who understand the worth of this thing.
- 17:19So they're dragging it on like a sort of sled, and some guy comes
- 17:26up to them and is like, hey, you need help with that,
- 17:30and they don't respond, and then Ace it's his voice who had spoken so
- 17:37I was like, oh, okay, so it wasn't lofy. But he
- 17:40says, buzz off. And then he knocks this guy down and says,
- 17:45you got to pick your targets more carefully or you might get more than you
- 17:49bargained for, and he yanks off this case. This is three kids in
- 17:55a trench coat basically, and when they reveal themselves, these grown men just
- 18:00say, ah, damn it, not them. Look out which uh if
- 18:07you are a child, a literal child, and upon revealing yourself to your
- 18:15enemies, their response is, ah shit, I've got to say, that's
- 18:23pretty badass. It's just it is like, who out there is a threat
- 18:33to grown men. I mean, that's just impressive. It just is.
- 18:41I can't help but be amazed at the way they come sailing out and it's
- 18:45just like a cut. You hear everybody like groaning, and then we resume
- 18:51our transport into town, and everybody who has been about to try them has
- 18:56just apparently been like taking care of and leveled. I mean, really that
- 19:04easily these guys they're training against each other. I had expected if they couldn't
- 19:11take each other down, that they were just not quite up for it against
- 19:18adults. But what I think is happening is that they're meant to be so
- 19:22good at fighting that they are challenges to each other, but regular people are
- 19:30not challenging to them. Wild I mean, these adults should be embarrassed,
- 19:40so then we have I've grown to really love the musical cues in this show,
- 19:45because anytime that something's supposed to be fancy, we get that that like
- 19:56string music that's sort of waltz, and that signals that we're dealing with like
- 20:02rich people, or at least people who like think really highly of themselves.
- 20:07And it turns out that this is high town where those with noble blood are
- 20:11separated from their lesser neighbors, so they it's supposed to be the most beautiful
- 20:21country in all of the East Blue not a hint of trash can be found
- 20:25in its streets. Okay, guys, look, I have to take a
- 20:30moment here because this is just relevant to something that I did yesterday. So
- 20:36I wanted to get a little patio table. And I try as often as
- 20:41I can to not buy things new. I try to go on Facebook market
- 20:45and find it used because it's just cheaper and easier. And I found this
- 20:51table that was perfect, and this person gave me their address to pick it
- 20:53up, and it turned out that they lived in a gated community. Now,
- 21:00I just want to preface this with the fact that, like, my
- 21:04idea of what a gated community was was that it's just basically like a nicer
- 21:11suburb that has a pretty simple gait with like a code and some cameras,
- 21:22so it's got slightly better security, but it's not really like that, do
- 21:30you know what I'm saying? Like, I never thought of it as being
- 21:33a whole different world inside, and I wasn't understanding the level to which some
- 21:41of these I'm not assuming all gated communities are like the one I visited,
- 21:44but this was just not on a level I grasped. So I apologize if
- 21:52you've heard this story before, because I'm probably going to tell it on another
- 21:56episode, like with Rashaun or something, because I haven't told her this story
- 21:59yet. But uh, first things first, is this person gave me their
- 22:03address and Google sent me to the gate. But it turns out that like
- 22:10the gate that Google sent me to wasn't the gate for guests. They only
- 22:15have one gate to get into the community for guests, but they've got four
- 22:19gates total for residents, so it basically was like go round the side if
- 22:26you're the help was the vibe, even though I know guests doesn't mean help
- 22:30necessarily, but it kind of feels like that. And so I had to
- 22:36find my own way there because Google didn't know that there was another gate.
- 22:40It sent me to the closest one and I pull up. Guys, this
- 22:45is just it was so beyond what I was expecting, immaculate, like landscaping
- 22:53all the way up these trees, and like in such a way that you
- 22:59can barely see the gates at all from the street. Right, you pull
- 23:03up and there's a gatehouse with two uniformed attendants, the only black people that
- 23:07I saw the whole time I was there, both of them black men,
- 23:11and they were so like they stood so carefully and clearly took their jobs very
- 23:21seriously, and they took my ID and like scanned it and took all my
- 23:26info before they opened the gates for me. I had to show them the
- 23:30message on Facebook messenger to indicate that I was allowed in what the address was
- 23:33that I was going to, and then they raised the They raised the arm.
- 23:41But there are two like gold and black gates that fold inward, and
- 23:47as you pass through there's this fountain and these trees hanging down and like fucking
- 23:52tulips blooming. And it was like I was on the set of a movie.
- 24:00Everything was uniform. All the grass on everybody's lawns was the exact same
- 24:04height, which I assume they just include lawn care and stuff in whatever membership
- 24:11you pay, like you know, housing, whatever it is. There was
- 24:17not a piece of trash or even a weed growing up between the cracks and
- 24:22the road or anything. There weren't even cracks in the road now that I
- 24:26stop and think about it, like the roads were just absolutely It looked like
- 24:32a Hallmark movie town. And if you haven't seen a Hallmark movie town,
- 24:37what I mean is they are the towns in those movies are complete, like
- 24:45Norman Rockwell style, perfect like versions. If you were imagining, like what
- 24:56does a general store look like? The platonic ideal a general store is what
- 25:02will be in like a Hallmark movie. And it was like that with the
- 25:06houses, and every house they weren't all identical. I was expecting it to
- 25:08be like row after row of identical. No, you've got like Adobe Southwestern
- 25:14houses you've got Victorian style houses, you've got like mod style houses that look
- 25:18almost like Art Deco, but absolutely perfect sidewalks. Everything is manicured to within
- 25:29an inch of its life. All of the front porches and everything looked like
- 25:34they came out of a magazine. They probably hired people to design them with
- 25:38these like gorgeous wreaths and furniture and multiple gates and fences with pouring roses.
- 25:48And I mean, it was so frustrating because it was absolutely beautiful, stunning.
- 25:55I felt this wave of envy over it. But also I know that
- 26:00everybody who lives here these houses. The sign outside said start at two million
- 26:04dollars apiece. Start. This is a neighborhood full of very likely shitty people,
- 26:18and yet I want to be part of it. I wanted to be
- 26:21in it. I wanted to live there. I really did. Like I
- 26:25saw all of these people just out for their morning jog with their dog on
- 26:27actual sidewalks. I haven't seen a neighborhood with a sidewalk in a fucking minute.
- 26:33Sidewalks they don't do that anymore unless you live in a richer suburb or
- 26:38if you are in the city. That's it. You don't get sidewalks,
- 26:44You walk in the street and hope that the cars see you if it's too
- 26:47dark, and just everything about it. It was so frustrating because I was
- 26:52like, we could all be living like this, We could all just pay
- 26:56our fair share of taxes, and our cities could just look like this,
- 27:00our towns could just look like this. But no, we have to save
- 27:04it for our area where the rich people are, because we don't want to
- 27:10share, and we want to definitely have things better than the other people,
- 27:14because we need something to assure everyone more better than they are. And I
- 27:18was so conflicted the whole time driving around, switching between this odd jealousy and
- 27:26then like this acute rage. And they even had this gorgeous like green like
- 27:33a sort of in the center of everything. It was sort of like a
- 27:37town square where there was a big outdoor amphitheater where they clearly like put concerts
- 27:41and plays on. There was a racquetball and swim club as well, which
- 27:47I don't know if you have to pay extra for that or if that's included,
- 27:49but it was all just within walking distance, a few blocks from these
- 27:53incredible homes. And then they even had a school and While the school was
- 27:57technically outside the gates, I have read that this is for tax purposes.
- 28:03It was clearly that school was part of the neighborhood. Like I was talking
- 28:11to Candice and she was like, I bet that's a charter school, and
- 28:12it felt very separate from everything. You couldn't see the school from the main
- 28:18road, and it just had the look of a place that's got all the
- 28:22amenities. You know. It's probably the kind of place that comes with the
- 28:26equipment that you see on TV shows that you're like, these kids are in
- 28:32high school and they have Wait, where is it that they are, Like,
- 28:36we didn't have that in my school. This school likely had it.
- 28:40And it just made me so angry to know how people can be like paying
- 28:48into this fund for all of them in this neighborhood to live like this,
- 28:55and yet they don't understand the appeal of socialism, which is just what that
- 28:59is, but like on a grander scale. But their assumption is that,
- 29:03yeah, but we deserve it, And if I put it into socialism,
- 29:07then people who don't deserve it are going to get access to the same good
- 29:11stuff that I have access to. And they don't deserve it. They just
- 29:15think that they know that there's no reason to assume that people in this neighborhood
- 29:18deserve to be there, Like there's just none what do you mean by deserve
- 29:22even anyway, this just it really really reminded me of that, this whole
- 29:29sequence, and uh, it's a real line in the sand. And you
- 29:37guys, I don't feel self conscious about the fact that I'm a poor most
- 29:42of the time. There have been times in my life where I've been hyper
- 29:48aware of it, but that was a lot of it was in high school
- 29:49and college and I was around other kids that had money, but I wasn't
- 29:55immersed in a world where everybody had money, and I was the only one
- 30:00who didn't. I was one of half the population that didn't. And then
- 30:07there were people who did. Driving around in my scratched car with the cracked
- 30:14windshield, I felt so so conspicuous and like I had to get out of
- 30:22the car and go up and get something off somebody's porch and lead money under
- 30:25the mat and I was like really self conscious getting out of the car,
- 30:30worried somebody was gonna say something about me taking things from the porch because I
- 30:33look sketchy, you know, like just the whole feeling of who you yourself
- 30:41are. It's bizarre how dependent it is on your surroundings. So anyway,
- 30:52this mention about like this is the shining jewel of the Goa Kingdom, said
- 30:57to be the most beautiful country, and all of the East blue. Not
- 31:00a hint of trash can be found on its streets. The same can Windmill
- 31:07Village can make no such claim. Although it's technically a part of the Goa
- 31:11Kingdom, the fact is often swept under the rug by its more wealthy inhabitants.
- 31:17And we go to downtown and apparently because Sabo says, see, I
- 31:25told you they'd love that crocodile skin, our pirate savings are really piling up,
- 31:30and we see him saying like that they I knew they'd love it.
- 31:36But the faces of everybody looking at them do not look welcoming. They look
- 31:41disgusted and sort of horrified, and people are getting out of their way.
- 31:45And I was like, really wishing that we got to see the response to
- 31:49the alligator skin, because I'm guessing that's sort of like a designer thing,
- 31:53But we don't get to see that part. We just see them still sitting
- 31:59on each other's shoulders in this cape making their way to a restaurant and they
- 32:05go inside and this dude answers the he's like the host, and he says,
- 32:10forgive my bluntness, but we simply do not serve your kind. And
- 32:16Sabo holds out this what looks almost like a compact with like a pearl chain
- 32:23attached to it, and it's got a flower on top. It's made of
- 32:28gold, and he says, VIP room please, and the guy says,
- 32:34but that mark it can't be. Please excuse my impertinence, or would be
- 32:39honored to have a noble such as yourself, Grace are establishment, and this
- 32:44guy just keeps bowing. They go inside and Ace is like, where did
- 32:49you even get that? And Sabo says, uh, oh, yeah,
- 32:53it's weird. I found it lying on the street. And of course I'm
- 32:58just like, oh, Sabo's a noble, okay, that explains his clothes,
- 33:02like it's very you know, I was saying to you guys, we
- 33:06didn't know anything about where he was from, so this is our info dump
- 33:09in this episode about that. So they get let inside and they're gonna have
- 33:15ramen, which evidently Sabo has never even heard of and they eat so much
- 33:21of it they ask for one bowl after another, and eventually it becomes clear
- 33:28as they they have managed to pretend that there's only one of them, just
- 33:34eating a lot and uh. The waitress just keeps getting sent out to like
- 33:40bring more. But eventually she opens the room after this like pause to breathe
- 33:47outside because she has been run ragged, and as she comes in, she
- 33:52sees that there are actually First of all, I think it's Loofy that's got
- 34:00his like weird rubber arm, but she screams, and when they burst in,
- 34:07it's the three of them, so it's clear that this is not a
- 34:10grown adult, and also that they don't have any fucking money, so they
- 34:15just jump out the window. I love. As they're jumping out, Sabo
- 34:22is just on his way down, going wow, Raman, sure is good.
- 34:28You are correct sir. I never had like proper ramen, you know,
- 34:32not not the twenty five cent per pack ramen, but proper like restaurant
- 34:40ramen until like two years ago, and I got so hooked. I needed
- 34:46to give myself an intervention because I was spending way too much money. It's
- 34:50very involved to make yourself, so I have never made it myself, and
- 34:54I still want to. But every time I look into what I need,
- 34:58none of the restaurant or none of the grocery stores around here carry the stuff
- 35:01I would use, and it would take a whole special trip, and I've
- 35:05still never gotten around to it. But yeah, as they jump out,
- 35:09like you know, people are yelling about how they're criminals and this. The
- 35:14people down on the street are like, but they're just kids. What.
- 35:17There's a security guard who's like, how did they get through the gate?
- 35:21I've had enough of their antics. I don't care if they're kids. They
- 35:24belong in jail. The waitress is like, did they know they were on
- 35:29the fourth floor when they jumped out the window? That's a long fall.
- 35:31And the restaurant owner is like, well, great, now we can replace
- 35:36the window. And they ate twenty six bowls of ramen, so that sucks.
- 35:44And they have left a note that apparently says like something like put it
- 35:49on our treasure tab and this guy is just like, well, what the
- 35:53hell does that mean? But we know the uh what they're saying is eventually
- 35:59we'll be rich enough to pay you back. I would love to see Louvi
- 36:02actually do this Louvy actually like come around and be like, hey, ten
- 36:09years ago, when I was a child, we ate a bunch of ramen
- 36:13and then ran, here's the money for that, sorry about it. As
- 36:19they're running away, there's a man on the street who yells for Sabo,
- 36:23and we find out later that it's his father, but Sabo, when he
- 36:28sees him, just immediately is like, I don't know who that is,
- 36:31so fuck this guy. And later on we get the story where Sabo is
- 36:38like, he is not a royal. He's high enough on the food chain
- 36:49to be somebody of enough importance that his marriage would be like, if not
- 36:57actually pre arranged, and it would certainly be a marriage made for the alliance
- 37:02and not like, oh, you get married for love and the whole like
- 37:09story. It starts off with him as a very young child and him telling
- 37:15them that his parents said, you know, just studied so that you can
- 37:21be good to the family business and get married and have children and we'll be
- 37:27so happy, and we're sure you'll be happy too, and he's like,
- 37:31oh, just study and find the right girl and everybody will be good,
- 37:35like happy for as long as I live. And you know, just the
- 37:39way that a child understands like, this is how I can make my parents
- 37:45proud, and that's pretty simple and straightforward, so I'll just go ahead and
- 37:49do that. And we see the two of them like looking down at him
- 37:54with this kind of curious expression on their faces, which later on we sort
- 37:59of begin to understand is greed. It's just a sort of looking at their
- 38:06child like he's a resource, you know, not like he is a person.
- 38:12And then we get a telling moment where his father is on the phone
- 38:15and he finds out that one of his ships sank. He explicitly says he
- 38:22doesn't give a shit that the crew died. He just wants to know about
- 38:25whether the supplies are safe because they were really expensive and someone will pay for
- 38:30this, YadA, YadA, YadA. And as Sabo comes in, he's
- 38:37lamenting that he can't afford this and just in a bad mood. And Sabo
- 38:42comes in and is like, hey, I drew this for you, dad,
- 38:45And he drew a picture of his father, who crumples it up and
- 38:51then tears it in half and says, your father is having a trying day
- 38:55at work. If you have time for this, you have time to study,
- 39:00and he just throws it all on the ground, and poor Sabo is
- 39:04like, I really was thinking to myself, Oda, did you did this
- 39:09happen to you? Like, you know, as an artist, were you
- 39:13actively discouraged from this? Because I could definitely see that he was able to
- 39:16make a living out of it, But it was like, there's a part
- 39:20of me that's sort of at what costs knowing what Oda has gone through to
- 39:23be constant in production and the health risks of that and everything, like,
- 39:32it's really not that different from the United States, where if you want to
- 39:37work in a creative field, you've got to be willing to kind of kill
- 39:40yourself and it's brutal, you know, Like yeah, anyway, So eventually
- 39:52he runs into some kid on the street who's like, I'm from the royal
- 39:55family and that means you have to do everything I say, so carrying me
- 40:00back to my house, and Sabo just begins to walk past him, and
- 40:05he says, I want a piggyback ride right now? How dare you?
- 40:09And he begins to like grapple with him, and Sabo knocks him off and
- 40:15just starts to walk away, and the boy pulls a knife and comes at
- 40:22Sabo and says, this ought to teach you, and we don't actually see
- 40:30what happens. It cuts after he comes at Sabo, and then we jump
- 40:36to like this kid's parent's appearing, and they're, of course like, because
- 40:45they're higher up socially, are threatening that they're going to like do something to
- 40:52Sabo and his mother immediately like the fact that Sabo has been hurt does not
- 41:00matter. This kid went to assault him with a fucking knife. And she
- 41:05does not even want to hear it. She actually hits him in the face.
- 41:10And she turns to this woman and says, my son can be such
- 41:15a little beast. I blame myself. I do hope you weren't hurt.
- 41:19It's terrible, I know. Please forgive us. I assure you he will
- 41:22be severely punished. I'll do anything I can to make things right. Shall
- 41:25we go to the doctor to make sure your son isn't injured? And come
- 41:31to the present, and Sabos says, then I realized that they love their
- 41:37money, their property, their status more than they love their son or no,
- 41:43he doesn't even say more than he just says, but not their son.
- 41:47If I couldn't marry into a royal family, I was useless to them.
- 41:52They try to teach me culture and literature, but I guess I didn't
- 41:57learn fast enough because they were always arguing, getting mad that family had no
- 42:01place for someone like me. I know, you guys have it worse,
- 42:06but even if I had parents, I was still alone. And we go
- 42:14like another flashback to his father being like, well, you've been sneaking around.
- 42:17Where have you been going? I shouldn't have to tell you this,
- 42:21but stay away from Great Terminal if you know what's good for you. We
- 42:24nobles are privileged to live in high Town with the King and his family.
- 42:28It's a life people down there can only dream of. By the same token,
- 42:32you do not belong in their world. And we have this like like
- 42:42weird scene where all of these dudes who are in Great Terminal, they're sitting
- 42:46around and they're like eating, and when Sabo comes in, they recognize him
- 42:52and are like you again, what are you doing here? Your parents are
- 42:57going to string you up? And he says, tell me another story.
- 43:01I want to hear all about the countries that you've been to and your adventures
- 43:05on the high seas. And these dudes who like seem like they're ready to
- 43:09you know, pound this kid into paste. Are basically like yeah, oh
- 43:13right. And so this is where he finds his escape and he tells Lufy
- 43:21and Ace, I ran away from home. It's so funny the way that
- 43:23they react because I'm like, yeah, he ran away from home, as
- 43:28like self explanatory. Guys like, clearly that's why he's out here, what
- 43:31do you mean? But I guess they just had not put two and two
- 43:36together. And so Ssabo is just determined, we're gonna set sail and we're
- 43:40gonna see the world, and once we've done, like seen it all,
- 43:45I'm going to write a book about kids like me, or write a book
- 43:51about it all for kids like me, which I really liked that idea of,
- 43:57you know, for kids that don't get to be free and go and
- 44:00live the way they want to live, I'll give them a window into what
- 44:04it's like. So this is the first time that Lufy says that he's going
- 44:08to be King of the pirates, and they all start to realize, like,
- 44:14what are we going to do in terms of captaining this shit, because
- 44:19we have all apparently assumed that we would be the captain and everybody else would
- 44:24be like our first mates or something, and we never even really like talked
- 44:30about that, and they don't come up with a solution here. But this
- 44:34is the scene where Ace goes and gets some sake and pours some for all
- 44:38of them and says, this is like all it takes to become brothers is
- 44:43to share some sake. So they all drink it together, and I was
- 44:49just like waiting for a reaction of them sort of spitting it out. But
- 44:52evidently sake is not new to them. Apparently this is old hat and they
- 44:58are not impressed by it. I really kind of I thought we were gonna
- 45:00have a moment of like, ew, what is this? Oh my god?
- 45:04You know? But no we do not. So the next episode is
- 45:15the as I'm running out of time, I'm like trying to figure out exactly
- 45:20how I'm going to break down this part of the story. But we these
- 45:29boys have like dug a hole in front of the door of Da Don's.
- 45:38I was about to say to Damn's they were allegedly going to catch some wild
- 45:45bores, but it was right outside the door, so she walks right into
- 45:49it, and then another dude like collapses into another hole while she's yelling at
- 45:52them. All we jumped into town at this point, and Sabo is real
- 45:59cocky with this group of dudes around him, being like, all right,
- 46:02let's get the chit chat and get straight to ask kicking. And we see
- 46:06Ace swing in on one of Lufy's arms like a it's very sort of tarzan
- 46:12ish. Looviy lets go of Ace and his arm snaps back and kind of
- 46:16sends him flying and then he lands in h He hits one dude like a
- 46:24cannonball as he lands and knocks him down, but he takes way too much
- 46:29time on his wind up with the other dude, and he gets punched in
- 46:34the face so that this dude's hand sinks in because his face is made of
- 46:38rubber and so his features are so smush that he can't see at all.
- 46:45And it is the creepiest looking thing. I don't feel like we've seen this
- 46:49happen to Loufy before, and I did not care for it. It's very
- 46:52buttholesque. I do not like it, not one bit. And the cops
- 46:58arrive just as they're fleeing and find a bunch of dudes like on the ground
- 47:01having been beaten to death. Probably not to death, but you know,
- 47:07so this is when they come home and they bring a deer and basically tell
- 47:14to Don like, yeah, we're late, get over it. Here's some
- 47:17food. We have the extended sequence of everybody like trying to get in on
- 47:22the food and the kids just eating most of it, apparently everybody fighting over
- 47:28it. Eventually there comes a point where didn finally is able to like lay
- 47:39down and go to bed, and you, guys, I found this so
- 47:44funny. She's laying she's asleep and she's dreaming, and in the subtitles it
- 47:51says hot to Don because she's imagining herself in her dreams as being beautiful.
- 48:00I don't know how common a thing this is, be guys. I have
- 48:02this dream all the time that I'm like back to the shape I was in
- 48:07as a teenager, or that I got like this immaculate hair style or color
- 48:13and I look amazing now, or just like any number of changes that have
- 48:20been made that all of a sudden, I'm just like super hot, and
- 48:25I just really like hid a nerve for me. I sympathize greatly. And
- 48:30eventually this wonderful dream gets interrupted because the boys have decided to start training in
- 48:36the middle of the night. And they fall right on top of her,
- 48:43and she is like, I have about had it with these fucking kids.
- 48:50She's saying, they've become hazardous to my health. And Dogras says, I
- 48:54think they've been running the show for a while now, and she's like,
- 48:59well, then I remind them whose fucking family this is. Garp can suck
- 49:04it. He doesn't own me. And as she's saying that, she turns
- 49:12around and she thinks it's Garp behind her, but it does not. It
- 49:16is Mikino and I can't remember the guy's name, but it's the mayor and
- 49:22the bartender from the town that Lufy is originally from, and they have just
- 49:29come to visit because apparently six months have gone by, and they're just like
- 49:32checking up on him, but they say, don't tell Garp, and I
- 49:38was like, that's interesting. Why aren't they allowed to see him? But
- 49:45the interaction here like I'm kind of, ah, this is great. I
- 49:50love the fact that like there are people who care about him, and Makino
- 49:55is like, I brought you some new clothes because I'm sure gar didn't like
- 50:00leave you anything, and I also brought some stuff for your friends as well.
- 50:06But probably they'll have to be altered a little bit, and she smiles
- 50:10at Ace and sabo. Ace doesn't want to like participate. He acts like
- 50:15he's too cool, but he can't help but be like a little interested,
- 50:19and he seems embarrassed by that. I love what she says, you seem
- 50:23like a good boy, And Ace says, who told you that? And
- 50:27Lufy is like, you're blushing. Oh god, these two, It's very
- 50:34very cute. I enjoy anytime that Ace taking himself seriously kind of becomes the
- 50:38butt of the joke because he does really need to like calm down with that
- 50:45a bit. The Mikino like makes all of this food and everybody just has
- 50:51this wonderful night, and I love that. You see the shadow of Garb
- 50:54coming up to the house and he falls into one of the whole for the
- 51:00bores, and as Ace is saying he's going to become the best pirate and
- 51:08Lufy is arguing, like, I'm going to be a pirate before either of
- 51:12you. Two. We see Garp standing in the doorway and his eyes are
- 51:17shining like stars because he's so angry that they're still talking about becoming pirates,
- 51:25and he basically like beats the shit out of them. It's such an ongoing
- 51:30thing in this show that people who beat you love you. It's really fucked
- 51:34up. But he also beats to Don and is like, well, obviously
- 51:40you're raising them wrong because they still want to be pirates, so of course
- 51:45you are going to get some of this as well. He calls Sabo squirt,
- 51:50and Lufy's immediately like he's not a squirt, he's Sabo, and we're
- 51:54going to become pirates whether you like it or not. And Garb is like,
- 52:02well, if you want to be treated like criminals, that I can
- 52:05beat the shit out of you like criminals, no problem. Meanwhile, Machino
- 52:09and the Mayor have left apparently got out of there just before Garb arrived,
- 52:17and they're just thinking as they're leaving and hearing all the ruckus, like,
- 52:22uh, these kids better figure it out because they're in some trouble and they're
- 52:27so like relaxed about it. I'm like, do you guys hear these kids
- 52:30being beaten the fuck up and you're just like, well, well, you
- 52:34know what a weird culture. So what the boys decide they're going to do
- 52:43is they're going to create their own hideaway and just going to like leave the
- 52:52Dedan household, and it's a really like garb sort of makes them think it's
- 53:01their own idea, but I get the feeling that this is what he was
- 53:05hoping for them to do. So they go out into the woods and in
- 53:12the morning, Do Donna is sort of like, what the hell are we
- 53:16gonna Like they could get murdered out there. I don't want to be taken
- 53:20care of these kids, but I also don't want anything bad to happen to
- 53:22them, And he's like, well, I'm gonna leave, and by the
- 53:28time I get back, you better have made them proper marines. And Don
- 53:31is like, yeah, that's not gonna fucking happen. What is that you
- 53:36said? Nothing? By Oh my god, I did think that was really
- 53:39funny. But Do Donna eventually is like, let me go and find out
- 53:46where they are. And the boys have been working really hard on putting this
- 53:52hideout together. It's super like this is like the fantasy right when you were
- 54:00a little kid, Did you want a clubhouse? Did you have a treehouse?
- 54:08A treehouse was really the dream, right. I didn't even have like
- 54:15the kind of backyard that had a tree in it because I lived in a
- 54:16condo, so that was just absolutely not on the table for me. And
- 54:22treehouses are dangerous enough that a lot of parents are like, yeah, I
- 54:24don't think so, we're not doing that. However, if I were to
- 54:30ever have a kid, it would just be I would I would definitely do
- 54:37a treehouse. It's for me. Having like a place that was sort of
- 54:40a way that felt like my own, even if it was sort of under
- 54:45surveillance in some way, was such a huge important part of growing up that
- 54:55I would just want my kid to have that. I might put a ring
- 54:59camera in there somewhere, just to keep an eye and make sure that they're
- 55:01all right, but probably after they reached a certain age I would stop with
- 55:07that as well, so that they could have their privacy. I'd probably do
- 55:09that up until they were like maybe like ten or so, just to make
- 55:14sure that they're not playing with matches or about to fall out. But yeah,
- 55:20I really just watching them put this together. Kept thinking about as a
- 55:24kid how much I wanted to have a sort of like secret society meeting up
- 55:32place sort of like what I always thought of when I was little was like
- 55:37the Midnight Society from Are You Afraid Of the dark and they would just get
- 55:42together in the middle of the night and tell ghost stories and that was all
- 55:45they did. But the fact that they had like a place that they gathered
- 55:47and a sort of ritual to it where right before you told the story,
- 55:52you would take some of that sand and throw out on the fire so that
- 55:54the flames would turn a different color. It all just felt really magical to
- 55:59me, and I was fascinated by it. So, yeah, they've managed
- 56:04to go through all of the stuff at the dump to get the equipment and
- 56:08supplies that they need, and we get the montage of them putting this all
- 56:13together, and then there's a really funny bit where Dedan is she has finally
- 56:20found them and is trying to check up on them in the middle of the
- 56:28night while they're asleep with like good motivations. She's looking at them and she's
- 56:31like, oh, they're actually kind of adorable when they're asleep. And she's
- 56:36like, let me just put this blanket that blew off of Loofy, I'll
- 56:40put it back, and as she steps forward, it triggers a booby trap
- 56:47which Sabo had said he was going to construct, but it causes the whole
- 56:58like this this room Goldberg machine to go off that releases a giant I don't
- 57:07know, a mallet, I guess to fall and just bashed Don in the
- 57:12stomach and it sends her flying in this like slow motion. It's really funny,
- 57:15honestly. I just love the fact that every time she starts to warm
- 57:20up to them, they're immediately like fuck you, but not even on purpose
- 57:23necessarily, And she falls and they're so high up that they can't even see
- 57:30her after she lands. So when they wake because of the noise, Saba
- 57:35is like, that's weird. I thought, like the thing went off,
- 57:37but I don't see anybody. I made it in a hurry, so I
- 57:42may have goofed it up somehow. I'll just check tomorrow. And they all
- 57:45basically just like go back to bed. Meanwhile on the ground, Don is
- 57:51like, fine, go ahead and be pirates. I don't give it amn.
- 57:53In fact, I he'll ball three if you drown in the sea.
- 57:58And I couldn't tell if Ace see circus. He stands at the window for
