Transcript
- 0:01Speaker 1: Hey, discos, need a little more Disgraceland in your life,
- 0:05Speaker 1: just to touch to get you through. Yeah, me too.
- 0:08Speaker 1: This is the podcast that comes after the podcast. Welcome
- 0:12Speaker 1: to Disgraceland, the after Party. Welcome to the Disgraceland bonus episode,
- 0:30Speaker 1: a little thing we like to call the after party.
- 0:32Speaker 1: This is the show after the show, the party after
- 0:34Speaker 1: the party. The bridge to get you from one full
- 0:36Speaker 1: episode of Disgraceland to the other. The backyard, to dig
- 0:38Speaker 1: into the dirt. Our mission, as always, guys, to uncover
- 0:42Speaker 1: the truth, to confront the myth, to reclaim the story.
- 0:45Speaker 1: On this bonus episode, the music from the Mob movies
- 0:48Speaker 1: with the real life hits okay, as inspired by this
- 0:52Speaker 1: week's full episode on Adele in her love of al Pacino,
- 0:55Speaker 1: plus your voicemails, texts, emails, comments, dms, and as always,
- 0:59Speaker 1: a whole lot of Rosie. This is the podcast with
- 1:02Speaker 1: the musically obsessed, the outsiders, the independent thinkers who know
- 1:05Speaker 1: that the best history is the history that gets buried.
- 1:07Speaker 1: Disgraceland is where I tell the stories they didn't want told,
- 1:10Speaker 1: the kind that you'll end up telling someone else. All right,
- 1:12Speaker 1: this goes, let's get into it, okay. So in this
- 1:23Speaker 1: week's episode of Disgraceland, as I just alluded to. As
- 1:26Speaker 1: I just mentioned, we talk about Adele, and part of
- 1:29Speaker 1: her story revolves around her love of al Pacino movies
- 1:34Speaker 1: gangster movies, to be precise. I share this trait with Adele,
- 1:38Speaker 1: as I'm sure many of you do as well, but
- 1:41Speaker 1: specific to Italian movies. Italian gangster movies. For some reason,
- 1:48Speaker 1: at the end of the day, after my wife and
- 1:50Speaker 1: kids have fallen asleep, watching violent sociopaths navigate their way
- 1:55Speaker 1: through a secret society to deal with their problems, it
- 1:59Speaker 1: relaxes me. I don't know why. I do not know why.
- 2:02Speaker 1: I I've always been into gangster movies, specifically Italian mafia movies. Lately, though,
- 2:08Speaker 1: it's it's become I don't I don't know it's it's
- 2:12Speaker 1: it's I've gone deeper and deeper and deeper, and I'm
- 2:17Speaker 1: even watching straight up garbage, just looking for historical nuggets
- 2:24Speaker 1: that I can mine and that I can connect in
- 2:26Speaker 1: my brain, like, oh, that's based on this thing that
- 2:29Speaker 1: was based on this other thing that I learned from
- 2:31Speaker 1: this thing. And I've watched all the good stuff, I think,
- 2:35Speaker 1: and now I'm watching the trash Uh, I don't want to.
- 2:38Speaker 1: I don't want to call this show trash because that's unfair,
- 2:41Speaker 1: it's unfair to the filmmaker or the showrunner. But have
- 2:45Speaker 1: you watched Gravesend on Amazon? I have? I have. I've
- 2:49Speaker 1: watched both seasons. Season three is about to drop. I'm
- 2:52Speaker 1: gonna watch that too. This is not a good show.
- 2:56Speaker 1: It's it's bordering. It's right on the line of so bad.
- 2:59Speaker 1: It's good, but it's it's doesn't go that far, so
- 3:03Speaker 1: you can't even really use irony to appreciate it. But still, man,
- 3:08Speaker 1: it's got all the actors from every great Mob movie
- 3:12Speaker 1: in every Sopranos episode that you've ever seen. Okay, so
- 3:15Speaker 1: it should be great. The acting should be great. It's
- 3:18Speaker 1: a testament to I think bad directing and bad writing
- 3:23Speaker 1: because it's so bad the acting can't save it. I
- 3:28Speaker 1: say all that, and I'm laughing, and I'm kind of
- 3:31Speaker 1: ashamed of myself for saying this, because part of me
- 3:35Speaker 1: really loves what this filmmaker is doing. He's completely This
- 3:38Speaker 1: guy grew up in Gravesend, Brooklyn. He's completely I forget
- 3:42Speaker 1: his first name is his last name is DeMeo. I
- 3:43Speaker 1: think it's William DeMeo. He's completely following his passion and
- 3:47Speaker 1: what he knows and who he is, and he's making
- 3:50Speaker 1: something that people clearly love. So who am I to
- 3:52Speaker 1: shit on it? Right? And I but I do like it.
- 3:56Speaker 1: I watch it, but I can't. I can't tell you
- 3:58Speaker 1: it's a good show. It's not. You should check it out.
- 4:01Speaker 1: Let me know what you think. Graves End. It's on
- 4:02Speaker 1: Amazon again. I watch it all, Okay, But the mob
- 4:07Speaker 1: movies that I love the most are the ones that
- 4:09Speaker 1: incorporate rock and roll. So I thought there's no rock
- 4:13Speaker 1: and roll in Gravesend. By the way, I thought that
- 4:16Speaker 1: it would be cool to look at mob hits like
- 4:19Speaker 1: actual killings, murders from mob films, and the music the
- 4:24Speaker 1: actual hits that accompany those murders. Okay, but the caveat
- 4:29Speaker 1: is the murders have to be based on real life
- 4:32Speaker 1: mafia murders. Okay. This will keep us in the realm
- 4:35Speaker 1: of music and true crime. Okay, So I should tell
- 4:39Speaker 1: you spoiler alerts all right all over the place here.
- 4:42Speaker 1: If you haven't seen these movies and you hear me
- 4:44Speaker 1: mention them, just stop stop what you hear Okay, just
- 4:47Speaker 1: wait thirty seconds now, First, up the infamous head in
- 4:53Speaker 1: the vice scene from Martin Scorsese's Casino. This murder executed
- 4:59Speaker 1: by Opeshi's character, Nikki Santorro, who is playing a version
- 5:04Speaker 1: of a real gangster named Anthony Spilatro. This murder the
- 5:08Speaker 1: real murder. It didn't happen in Las Vegas. It's based
- 5:11Speaker 1: on the torture of a mobster named William McCarthy. McCarthy
- 5:15Speaker 1: was part of the Chicago Outfit and was tortured and
- 5:17Speaker 1: killed in nineteen sixty two. And yes, just like in Casino,
- 5:22Speaker 1: his eye popped out from the pressure of the vice
- 5:24Speaker 1: around his head. The song that's playing in the scene
- 5:27Speaker 1: is Cream's instrumental Toad from their debut album Fresh Cream,
- 5:33Speaker 1: released in nineteen sixty six. This murder, I believe, is
- 5:39Speaker 1: also connected to the real life murder is also connected
- 5:43Speaker 1: to the kidnapping of Frank Sinatra Junior, so there's another
- 5:47Speaker 1: music connection here. I believe of the four connected guys
- 5:52Speaker 1: who were killed in relation to that crime, one of
- 5:55Speaker 1: them was killed or at least reportedly killed in the
- 5:58Speaker 1: same way with the vice around the head, and William McCarthy,
- 6:00Speaker 1: I don't think. I don't think I could have it wrong.
- 6:03Speaker 1: All right. Next, we're gonna travel back to the great
- 6:06Speaker 1: Year of nineteen ninety six and the HBO film Gotti,
- 6:11Speaker 1: starring armand Assante in the title role. First of all,
- 6:15Speaker 1: this movie is incredible, It's great. I love it. I
- 6:19Speaker 1: love it. And if you watch as I do interviews
- 6:24Speaker 1: with real life Mafia members on YouTube, they will tell
- 6:28Speaker 1: you that this is one of the most accurate portrayals
- 6:32Speaker 1: of Mafia activity that's ever happened on film. Do I
- 6:36Speaker 1: believe that. I don't know how accurate it is, but
- 6:41Speaker 1: it is dramatic as hell, and it is really interesting.
- 6:44Speaker 1: And Armana Sante is just he's so cool. He's such
- 6:49Speaker 1: a great John Gotti. He's so awesome. But early in
- 6:52Speaker 1: this film, very early on, Armana Sante as John Gotti
- 6:57Speaker 1: enters a bar and he kills an enemy of mob
- 7:01Speaker 1: boss Carlo Gambino. It's a real life hit. It happened
- 7:05Speaker 1: in retaliation for the kidnapping and murder of Gambino's nephew.
- 7:09Speaker 1: That actually happened. Somebody fucking kidnapped and murdered Carlo Gambino,
- 7:15Speaker 1: the boss of all bosses, I believe at the time,
- 7:19Speaker 1: and kidnapper murdered his nephew. Anyways, this hit John Gotti
- 7:24Speaker 1: does in retaliation for Carlo Gambino. It puts him on
- 7:27Speaker 1: the fast track to becoming a leader in the Gambino family.
- 7:30Speaker 1: But more important, it made me love Three Dog Knight
- 7:33Speaker 1: because when Gotti kills this dude in the movie Gotti,
- 7:36Speaker 1: the dude's name is James McBratney. That was his real name.
- 7:40Speaker 1: When this happens, Three Dog Knights. Excellent tune Shambala Shamba La.
- 7:45Speaker 1: That song is so good it's playing in the background now.
- 7:48Speaker 1: Shambala was released on May eleventh, nineteen seventy three, and
- 7:52Speaker 1: the murder of James Jimmy McBratney took place on May
- 7:56Speaker 1: twenty second, nineteen seventy three, so kudos to the filmmakers
- 7:59Speaker 1: for the history accuracy here. Side note, Jimmy McBratney didn't
- 8:03Speaker 1: actually kidnap and kill Gambino's nephew. It was a case
- 8:07Speaker 1: of mistaken identity. Was a bad hit, but still it
- 8:10Speaker 1: worked for Gotti again, put him on the fast track
- 8:12Speaker 1: in the Gambino family. All right, number three on my list,
- 8:15Speaker 1: but probably should be number one. We're going back to
- 8:17Speaker 1: Joe Pesci here, but it's Joe Peschi's character, not from Casino,
- 8:20Speaker 1: his character from Goodfellas, Tommy Devido, based on real life
- 8:24Speaker 1: gangster Thomas d Simone, Tommy d Simone. And it's the
- 8:30Speaker 1: scene where Tommy kills the Billy Batts character for the
- 8:34Speaker 1: first time, played by Frank Vincent. All Right, they think
- 8:37Speaker 1: that he kills him. And when this happens in Henry
- 8:40Speaker 1: Hill's bar, we hear Donovan's excellent Atlantis playing in the scene. Okay, now,
- 8:47Speaker 1: this scene is a fairly accurate portrayal of what went
- 8:51Speaker 1: down in real life. D Simone, Tommy de Simone murdered
- 8:55Speaker 1: a guy named William bent Vena. I think that's how
- 8:59Speaker 1: you say that, who was a made member of the
- 9:01Speaker 1: Gambino family. The hit happened in nineteen seventy. Donovan's Atlantis
- 9:06Speaker 1: was released in nineteen sixty eight. I don't know what
- 9:08Speaker 1: that had been playing in Henry Hills Bar. Maybe maybe
- 9:12Speaker 1: The interesting thing about this in the movie, they attack
- 9:16Speaker 1: Billy Batts after Billy bats insults Tommy or later on
- 9:20Speaker 1: in the night. It's not immediate. You know, Billy Batts
- 9:24Speaker 1: tells him to go get a shinebox, and you know,
- 9:27Speaker 1: a couple hours go by, they wait for the girls
- 9:29Speaker 1: to leave, they let Billy Batts relax, and then and
- 9:34Speaker 1: then once everyone's gone, Tommy goes to work on Billy
- 9:39Speaker 1: Bats and they think they kill him. Of course they don't.
- 9:44Speaker 1: They kill him later in the trunk of the car.
- 9:46Speaker 1: He survives for a couple more hours. However, in real life,
- 9:49Speaker 1: what happened was the insult happens in a couple weeks
- 9:52Speaker 1: go by before Tommy de Savone kills William How do
- 9:56Speaker 1: you say his last name? Ben Venna? Who is the
- 9:59Speaker 1: Billy Bats character? So there you go, all right. Next,
- 10:02Speaker 1: I want to take you to a rooftop in Boston, Massachusetts.
- 10:05Speaker 1: Here in the early odds, Billy costagain played by Leonardo DiCaprio.
- 10:10Speaker 1: He gets a bullet in the head, okay, in the
- 10:13Speaker 1: elevator in The Departed, And just before that happens, there's
- 10:17Speaker 1: a bit of the live version of Comfortably Numb by
- 10:22Speaker 1: Pink Floyd. But it's the Roger Waters live version. Okay.
- 10:27Speaker 1: It's when he's up on the roof with Matt Damon.
- 10:29Speaker 1: It's also earlier in the movie. It also happens earlier
- 10:31Speaker 1: in the movie when Matt Damon is in the middle
- 10:34Speaker 1: of a sex scene. But anyways, it happens on the
- 10:36Speaker 1: roof there, just a bit of It's like some guitar playing. Now.
- 10:40Speaker 1: The reason I mentioned this is because it again spoiler
- 10:43Speaker 1: alert for the Sopranos. Here, it's the same version of
- 10:48Speaker 1: comfortably numb that is playing in Christopher Maltasante's truck before
- 10:53Speaker 1: Kennedy and Heidi run him off of the road and
- 10:57Speaker 1: Tony as well, and then you know what happens there.
- 11:00Speaker 1: Christopher Moltisante, that character in the Sopranos is based loosely
- 11:04Speaker 1: on mobster Anthony Bruno in Delicato. Anthony Bruno in Delicanto
- 11:09Speaker 1: from the Bonano family, a gangster with a severe drug addiction.
- 11:13Speaker 1: That's who they based the Christopher Maltasante character on in Sopranos. Now,
- 11:18Speaker 1: Bruno in Delicato is also the inspiration behind the Bruno
- 11:22Speaker 1: character from Donnie Brosco, the son of Sonny Red. The
- 11:26Speaker 1: actor who plays Bruno and Donnie Brosco is Brian Tarantina.
- 11:30Speaker 1: Brian Tarantina plays Salvatore, Mustang, Sally and Tilea in the Sopranos.
- 11:36Speaker 1: Mustang Sally is eventually murdered. There is no music accompanying
- 11:40Speaker 1: the hit and the death is not inspired by true events,
- 11:43Speaker 1: at least that I know of. But Mustang Sally is
- 11:46Speaker 1: a song by Wilson Pickett that I never need to
- 11:48Speaker 1: hear again, and neither to you. They can take that
- 11:50Speaker 1: one in Brown Eyed Girl and they can send him
- 11:52Speaker 1: straight to the moon. Now listen, Bruno in Delicado is
- 11:54Speaker 1: still alive. Okay. I wonder what he thinks of being
- 11:58Speaker 1: portrayed in Two Mafia. I was about to say films,
- 12:03Speaker 1: but the Sopranos and in Donnie Brosco. Now, let's talk
- 12:07Speaker 1: about Tony Soprano killed a bunch of people, obviously, but
- 12:10Speaker 1: let's talk about his musical taste. I loved it. Struck
- 12:14Speaker 1: me as totally accurate. Basically, he's got, like, you know,
- 12:18Speaker 1: middle aged classic rock radio tastes. I love it. It's perfect.
- 12:22Speaker 1: Pink Floyd makes all the sense in the world when
- 12:24Speaker 1: they're driving in that car and they're listed and Christopher
- 12:27Speaker 1: is excited to play Tony that Roger Waters Pink Floyd CD.
- 12:35Speaker 1: When I heard that Roger Waters version of Comfortably Now
- 12:38Speaker 1: in The Departed, however, it struck me as weird because
- 12:43Speaker 1: it wasn't the studio version. Of the song, and I
- 12:46Speaker 1: immediately thought, oh, well, you know, Scorsese just couldn't get
- 12:50Speaker 1: Pink floyd to license him the studio version. Maybe they
- 12:53Speaker 1: wanted too much money, or they just didn't want to
- 12:55Speaker 1: use or whatever, and he ended up going with the
- 12:56Speaker 1: live version. Turns out that's exactly what happened. I was
- 12:59Speaker 1: right about that. I'm not sure, however, why it's used
- 13:03Speaker 1: in the Sopranos, because they use one of these days
- 13:09Speaker 1: they get to license Pink Floyds one of these days.
- 13:12Speaker 1: In a two thousand and six episode called The Fleshy
- 13:15Speaker 1: Part of the Thigh, it's used in the credit sequence.
- 13:18Speaker 1: This episode is the one where Bobby Bacalau gets paid
- 13:21Speaker 1: by the aspiring hip hop artist Marvin MVP Bellfield to
- 13:25Speaker 1: shoot him on purpose so that Marvin can gain some
- 13:29Speaker 1: much needed street credibility, and that storyline is reportedly a
- 13:33Speaker 1: parody of the real life fifty cent shooting and Marvin
- 13:37Speaker 1: to further connect to music history into real life music
- 13:40Speaker 1: Marvin is played. The character is played by Naughty by
- 13:44Speaker 1: Nature's Tretch and Tretch's manager excuse me. Marvin's manager in
- 13:50Speaker 1: this episode is played by Lord Jamar from Brand Nubian
- 13:53Speaker 1: There's even a brand Nubian reference in the dialogue. Now,
- 13:56Speaker 1: the depiction of hip hop artists like MVP being so
- 13:59Speaker 1: dead for street credibility was so accurate that Nas references
- 14:04Speaker 1: this episode on his two thousand and six album hip
- 14:07Speaker 1: Hop Is Dead. Incredible love these connections. All Right, I'm
- 14:11Speaker 1: going too deep down the rabbit hole, but we will
- 14:13Speaker 1: go deeper. We're going to do that in the exclusive
- 14:17Speaker 1: section of this after party, Zeth and I, we're going
- 14:19Speaker 1: to talk about real life rock stars, real life musicians
- 14:21Speaker 1: caught up with real life gangsters. Madonna, Marilyn Monroe. You're waiting,
- 14:25Speaker 1: You're like Merily Monroe. She's an actress, not she's also
- 14:27Speaker 1: a pretty damn good singer. Okay, put out records the
- 14:31Speaker 1: whole bit. Okay. Anyways, some surprising connections between real life
- 14:37Speaker 1: musicians and the mafia that we're going to discuss in
- 14:42Speaker 1: the exclusive section of this after party. Go to www

- 14:54Speaker 1: am obsessed with. I probably need a hobby. Maybe Adele
- 14:57Speaker 1: needs a hobby, as Well, like I said, our new
- 15:00Speaker 1: story on Adallas available for you to listen to right now.
- 15:02Speaker 1: Coming up in the rewind slot this Sunday, We've got
- 15:06Speaker 1: our episodes on Paul McCartney and John Lennon, both of
- 15:09Speaker 1: their early seventies solo career stuff. That's what's going to
- 15:12Speaker 1: be detailed in these episodes. Paul McCartney's stint in jail,
- 15:17Speaker 1: John lennon stint under FBI surveillance. These are great episodes.
- 15:21Speaker 1: You're gonna dig them, I promise. If you haven't heard
- 15:23Speaker 1: them before, get in there and listen. And then on Tuesday,
- 15:26Speaker 1: we've got our episode on the Hillsborough disaster. This is
- 15:30Speaker 1: a special episode of Disgraceland. We are releasing it because
- 15:33Speaker 1: the World Cup is about to get underway, and we
- 15:36Speaker 1: originally wrote this episode for a different series other than Disgraceland.
- 15:40Speaker 1: But make no mistake, this is a Disgraceland episode and
- 15:44Speaker 1: it depicts the horrible tragedy we're ninety seven ninety seven
- 15:49Speaker 1: Liverpool football fans died in a fatal crowd crush during
- 15:54Speaker 1: a nineteen eighty nine soccer match at Hillsborough Stadium. Is
- 15:59Speaker 1: one of the episodes that we've produced here double Elis
- 16:01Speaker 1: and I am most proud of It's an incredible story.
- 16:04Speaker 1: We are releasing it once again, timed with the World
- 16:08Speaker 1: Cup that's about to start happening this weekend. Now, whether
- 16:12Speaker 1: or not you're a soccer fan, you're going to dig this,
- 16:13Speaker 1: so I hope you check it out. And when you're
- 16:15Speaker 1: listening to that episode, be thinking about tragedies. Be thinking
- 16:19Speaker 1: about music tragedies, sports tragedies, and what's the most tragic
- 16:23Speaker 1: event from music history, sports history, just culture in general.
- 16:27Speaker 1: Six p One seven nine oh sixty six six three eight.
- 16:29Speaker 1: Leave me a voicemail, send me a text, and let

- 17:00Speaker 1: conversations going on with you, guys. Let's check in with
- 17:04Speaker 1: Rob from the three oh three.
- 17:06Speaker 2: Hey, Jake, this is Rob from the three oh three.
- 17:08Speaker 2: It's the first time I've ever had to stop a
- 17:10Speaker 2: podcast and doll your number. Man, you asked for unlikely
- 17:14Speaker 2: covers and I worked for a radio station in Denver
- 17:17Speaker 2: and I did not know it's a classic rock station
- 17:20Speaker 2: that pm DON covered Beatles Norwegian would really good song,
- 17:27Speaker 2: both versions. That's all I got, man, Thanks.
- 17:30Speaker 1: Rob, thanks for the call. I love the pm DON vibes.
- 17:32Speaker 1: I love the nineties vibes. I had no idea they
- 17:38Speaker 1: covered Norwegian? Would they? Did they cover it or just
- 17:40Speaker 1: sample it? I'm gonna check it out. Very interested in this, Rob,
- 17:45Speaker 1: thanks so much. Russell from the seven oh four.
- 17:48Speaker 3: Hey there from the seven oh four, I do finish
- 17:52Speaker 3: listening to the nineteen ninety.
- 17:53Speaker 4: Four after Party.
- 17:55Speaker 3: I graduated high school in nineteen ninety four, so a
- 17:57Speaker 3: lot of what you talked about really get home for me.
- 18:01Speaker 3: I listened to it because I wanted to find out
- 18:03Speaker 3: about these punk albums not by punk artists.
- 18:05Speaker 5: See who mentioned was And there's one that came to.
- 18:08Speaker 3: Mind that I'm surprised it wasn't mentioned, and that is
- 18:11Speaker 3: Break against the Machines album.
- 18:13Speaker 2: Battle of Los Angeles.
- 18:15Speaker 4: You know that a punk album is relevant when you
- 18:19Speaker 4: have someone like Weird Al covering, not parodying, but covering
- 18:27Speaker 4: greats against the Machine in one.
- 18:29Speaker 2: Of their concerts. All I'd say about that is fuck.
- 18:32Speaker 3: You, I will do what you tell me.
- 18:35Speaker 4: Love the show, Love Hollywood Land, looking forward to hearing
- 18:39Speaker 4: more of it, Have a great day.
- 18:41Speaker 1: Love the Passion Russell. Is that true weird al covered
- 18:45Speaker 1: Ridge against the Machine and didn't parody it? That's that's uh,
- 18:50Speaker 1: that's pretty interesting. What's more punk than fuck you? I
- 18:52Speaker 1: won't do what you tell me? That's what I want
- 18:53Speaker 1: to know. Chad from the six oh four, Hey.
- 18:57Speaker 5: Jacob, Chad can come up and here British Columbia, Canada.
- 19:03Speaker 5: More nothing disgraceful, just like you feel good you know music,
- 19:10Speaker 5: which for me, it's the number one super group, the
- 19:15Speaker 5: only fucking supergroups that exists on the planet ever, of
- 19:19Speaker 5: all time in my opinion, Traveling Wilburries.
- 19:24Speaker 1: Chad, thank you. I appreciate the call in Traveling Wilburries
- 19:27Speaker 1: might be the greatest supergroup of all time? But are
- 19:29Speaker 1: they the only one? The only one? I don't know, man,
- 19:32Speaker 1: what about the Firm? Come on, dude, I'm kidding the firm.
- 19:36Speaker 1: We're a B B team supergroup at best. There's gonna
- 19:41Speaker 1: be other examples of great supergroup. So someone was just
- 19:43Speaker 1: talking about rage against Mashine audio slave. There you go.
- 19:46Speaker 1: There's one. But there's a mythology to the Traveling Wilberries
- 19:49Speaker 1: that some of these other supergroups just don't have appreciate
- 19:52Speaker 1: the call Chad get back at us anytime. Amber from
- 19:57Speaker 1: the six to two Ozero rights and Hey, Jake, Amber
- 20:00Speaker 1: from the seven A five. But Amber, I'm looking at
- 20:04Speaker 1: your area code. It's six too well. Amber says, Hey,
- 20:07Speaker 1: I would also love a Tory Amos episode for a
- 20:10Speaker 1: crime perspective. Tory was raped at Oh my God, at
- 20:14Speaker 1: knife point by a fan. I did not know this.
- 20:19Speaker 1: My goodness. Her song that's my I just said that,
- 20:24Speaker 1: not Amber.
- 20:25Speaker 5: Here.
- 20:26Speaker 1: Amber goes on to say her song Me and a
- 20:28Speaker 1: Gun on the Little Earthquakes album is about that experience.
- 20:33Speaker 1: It's also one of the main reasons she's a spokesperson
- 20:36Speaker 1: co founder for RAIN. I hope this helps keep up
- 20:39Speaker 1: the great work Rock a rolla Amber, It absolutely helps.
- 20:43Speaker 1: Thank you so much. Wow, that's heavy. That is heavy. Yeah,
- 20:49Speaker 1: we'll definitely get into a torri Emos episode at some point.
- 20:52Speaker 1: Two US six writes in the question of outlier albums,
- 20:56Speaker 1: this spawning from our Weezer conversation last week relatives to
- 20:59Speaker 1: Pinkerton and our Weezer episode to a six text in
- 21:03Speaker 1: Hey I'm behind on the podcast, I agree with Pinkerton.
- 21:06Speaker 1: For Weezer, I would say Paul's Boutique is the Beastie Boys'
- 21:10Speaker 1: best album, best Beastie Boys album, and an outlier. I
- 21:15Speaker 1: never thought of Paul's Boutique as an outlier because but
- 21:19Speaker 1: it is. I see your point. But at the time,
- 21:21Speaker 1: they were still defining who they were going to be.
- 21:25Speaker 1: And I look at Licensed to Ill, Paul's Boutique Check
- 21:29Speaker 1: your Head chronologically their first three albums as a progression.
- 21:33Speaker 1: You can hear them creatively going from one to the
- 21:36Speaker 1: other versus Weezer, which is the blue album Pinkerton, and
- 21:40Speaker 1: then what the Green album after that, and the Green
- 21:43Speaker 1: album kind of reverts back to what they were. It'd
- 21:46Speaker 1: be like if Check your Head reverted back to License
- 21:48Speaker 1: to Ill. But to your point, however, two six the
- 21:51Speaker 1: Beastie Boys, they once they land on Check your Head,
- 21:53Speaker 1: they kind of stick the landing for a while. Ill
- 21:56Speaker 1: communication is still in that vein. They've kind of found
- 21:58Speaker 1: what they're doing, they've identified themselves. But uh, pretty interesting
- 22:02Speaker 1: to think of Paul's Boutigue as an outlier. It certainly
- 22:04Speaker 1: sounds like one now. Nine to one seven writes in Hey, Adele,
- 22:07Speaker 1: where's the Fiona Apple? Episode? Nine one seven? How do
- 22:10Speaker 1: you know we're going to do a Fiona Apple episode?
- 22:12Speaker 1: Nine one seven. Also writes in Pavement, he just wants
- 22:15Speaker 1: to keep your hard core noice in check and sounds
- 22:17Speaker 1: extremely insecure. Nothing about Swans, no deaf Heaven week. I
- 22:24Speaker 1: don't know what the hell you're talking about. Nine one seven.
- 22:26Speaker 1: I did find out an interesting thing about the Swans recently, though.
- 22:29Speaker 1: Michael Girauh dated Madonna for a while back in the
- 22:32Speaker 1: day nine one seven. A lot of texts here, also
- 22:35Speaker 1: writes in look Up Kanye's obsession with Adele before his
- 22:37Speaker 1: first album came out. Okay, I will keep texting me
- 22:40Speaker 1: nine one seven. Appreciate it six one seven, nine oh
- 22:42Speaker 1: six six six three eight. You guys want to get
- 22:44Speaker 1: at me about anything here, Jeff mcdermoan writes in hey episode,
- 22:48Speaker 1: request Jeff here from the eight one to five and
- 22:49Speaker 1: just finished the re release the rewind of the Aliyah episode,
- 22:53Speaker 1: and it got me thinking of a hip hop artist.
- 22:55Speaker 1: It started to blow up around the same time that
- 22:56Speaker 1: she did DMX, please make a DMX episode four exclamation points.
- 23:02Speaker 1: There is enough crime in drama to make a very
- 23:05Speaker 1: interesting story. And believe it or not, he did make
- 23:07Speaker 1: some pretty great music. Keep on keeping on, Jeff from
- 23:10Speaker 1: the eight one to five. Jeff, we got DMX on
- 23:12Speaker 1: the list this year. I believe it's in the works,
- 23:16Speaker 1: so to speak. We're planning for it to be in
- 23:18Speaker 1: the works. I should say, Oh, you guys want to
- 23:21Speaker 1: hit me up with requests for subjects to cover in Disgraceland,
- 23:24Speaker 1: you can do so. Disgrace lamdpod at gmail dot com.
- 23:28Speaker 1: In the exclusive section of last week's after Party, we
- 23:30Speaker 1: were talking about pulp fiction. Casey writes in Casey Juvenile
- 23:35Speaker 1: Rights and Hey, I heard in the after Party exclusive
- 23:37Speaker 1: section on pulp fiction this week, and I wanted to
- 23:40Speaker 1: bring to your attention something that I recently noticed about
- 23:42Speaker 1: the movie. It is my all time favorite and I
- 23:45Speaker 1: watched it about two times a year and always find
- 23:47Speaker 1: something new. You guys mentioned Steve Buscemi playing Buddy Holly. Well,
- 23:51Speaker 1: I'm not sure if you're aware of this, but there
- 23:53Speaker 1: is a theory that Buddy Hawley is actually mister Pink
- 23:57Speaker 1: from Reservoir Dogs and I'm sure you remember his classic
- 23:59Speaker 1: dialogue and which he talks about how he doesn't tip
- 24:01Speaker 1: waiters and waitresses. So the theory is that mister Pink
- 24:05Speaker 1: went underground after the robbery and is hiding out as
- 24:08Speaker 1: a waiter because no one would expect it anyway. It's
- 24:11Speaker 1: just something to think about. Love your work, keep up
- 24:13Speaker 1: the good work. That's from CJ, CJ. This theory is awesome.
- 24:16Speaker 1: I love it. Would mister Pink though, would he recognize
- 24:20Speaker 1: Vincent Vega as vic Vega's brother, you know what I mean?
- 24:23Speaker 1: Because he's waiting on him, you know he might? Is
- 24:26Speaker 1: there anything? Is there anything in that scene where Buddy's
- 24:30Speaker 1: kind of like where mister Pink is kind of like, wait,
- 24:33Speaker 1: who the fuck is this? This guy looks like someone
- 24:35Speaker 1: I know, you know what I mean? Maybe a look,
- 24:38Speaker 1: a glance, a raised eyebrow, even last one here Relative
- 24:42Speaker 1: to Weezer, Good Day Jake Rob originally from Auckland, now
- 24:45Speaker 1: living in Queensland, Australia. Love your podcast. I'm so glad
- 24:49Speaker 1: someone else thinks Pinkerton is a great album. Weezer played
- 24:52Speaker 1: Auckland in nineteen ninety six, right in that strange window
- 24:54Speaker 1: where Pinkerton was still new and uncomfortable, and I really
- 24:57Speaker 1: liked it, but none of my mates did. It was
- 24:59Speaker 1: no Doddy Holly, slightly unhinged in a way that didn't
- 25:02Speaker 1: quite fit Weezer's Blue album, and Weezer played Auckland just
- 25:05Speaker 1: after we finished high school end of Exam's blowout. That
- 25:08Speaker 1: weird feeling where your life is suddenly open, but no
- 25:11Speaker 1: one has told you what it's supposed to look like
- 25:13Speaker 1: yet Damn Rob Well put Rob We hope to capture
- 25:20Speaker 1: that sentiment in the sentence you just wrote, or that
- 25:24Speaker 1: I just read that you wrote in our latest episode
- 25:28Speaker 1: of this film should be Played Loud, which is on
- 25:30Speaker 1: Dazed and Confused. We're releasing it this month. We recorded
- 25:33Speaker 1: it last night. We're releasing it this month because it
- 25:35Speaker 1: is the end of the school year, and it is
- 25:37Speaker 1: probably the greatest graduation movie that I've ever seen, even
- 25:40Speaker 1: even more than The Graduate. How about that? How about that?
- 25:44Speaker 1: Is dazzing Confused better than The Graduate? I watch it more,
- 25:47Speaker 1: I appreciate it more. I don't know. I don't know
- 25:48Speaker 1: if I'm actually saying that I should probably watch The
- 25:51Speaker 1: Graduate again. But you know, I don't love The Graduate.
- 25:53Speaker 1: I never have What's wrong with me. I don't know, Rob,
- 25:57Speaker 1: You're a good writer. Right back anytime. All right, you
- 26:00Speaker 1: guys want to email me Disgrace Sampod at gmail dot com.
- 26:03Speaker 1: Now listen, May Madness. May Madness has been consuming all
- 26:07Speaker 1: of us here at Double Elvis and everybody over in

- 26:38Speaker 1: may or may not be aware. For the month of May,
- 26:40Speaker 1: which has now ended, we were covering May Madness. Now
- 26:44Speaker 1: May Madness. You might be like, what are you talking about?
- 26:47Speaker 1: I know about March Madness. Is May Madness the NCAAA
- 26:50Speaker 1: baseball tournament. No it's not, but I am deeply invested
- 26:52Speaker 1: in that as well. May Madness is our sitcom theme tournament. Okay,
- 26:58Speaker 1: And we have a winner, the sickcomal Tron two thousand.
- 27:02Speaker 1: It finally tabulated all the votes and you know, it
- 27:06Speaker 1: started spewing out some white smoke just like the Vatican,
- 27:09Speaker 1: and we got news. Okay, So I'm not gonna blow
- 27:13Speaker 1: it here I'm going to go to our special May
- 27:16Speaker 1: Madness correspondent, Matt Boden check in with Matt. Here, Matt
- 27:20Speaker 1: can give us a recap of what exactly went down
- 27:23Speaker 1: with May Madness and how we arrived with our winner
- 27:26Speaker 1: and who that winner is, Matt, give it to him.
- 27:30Speaker 6: Well, we had a lot of, you know, great deserving
- 27:33Speaker 6: theme songs in this contest, but ultimately we wound up
- 27:36Speaker 6: with an all New York final with mister Cotter and
- 27:39Speaker 6: the sweat Hogs from Brooklyn going up against George and
- 27:42Speaker 6: Weezy on the East Side of Manhattan formerly of Queens
- 27:47Speaker 6: and ultimately our winner was the Jeffersons, who defeated Welcome
- 27:53Speaker 6: Back Cotter fifty four to twenty five. I don't think
- 27:57Speaker 6: anybody was surprised to see the Jeffersons in the final.
- 28:00Speaker 1: Uh.
- 28:00Speaker 6: It's an incredible theme, with the indelible images of Wheezy
- 28:05Speaker 6: wiping her eyes and George with that hilarious yet confidence
- 28:10Speaker 6: strut as they head into the uh, the apartment building.
- 28:15Speaker 6: So there you have it, The Jeffersons the greatest sitcom
- 28:19Speaker 6: theme of all time according to our listeners.
- 28:22Speaker 1: All right, Matt, thank you for that. We appreciate the recap,
- 28:24Speaker 1: appreciate all the work you put into this, and appreciate
- 28:27Speaker 1: everybody over on Patreon who voted and took part in
- 28:29Speaker 1: made Madness this year. This was a lot of fun.
- 28:33Speaker 1: I think the thing we learned is that we like
- 28:34Speaker 1: doing we like doing tournaments. We want to do another one.
- 28:39Speaker 1: We want we want to finally figure out these these long,
- 28:42Speaker 1: these long mused about cultural questions, you know, like what
- 28:47Speaker 1: the greatest sitcom theme of all time is? Obviously The Jeffersons.
- 28:51Speaker 1: I kind of feel like that's on my answer. My
- 28:53Speaker 1: answer is taxi maybe cheers, But you know, I can
- 28:56Speaker 1: understand and the actually the story behind the creed of
- 29:00Speaker 1: the song that is the theme song for the Jeffersons
- 29:03Speaker 1: is really fascinating and also speaks to that tunes greatness.
- 29:06Speaker 1: But there are other great cultural questions that we want
- 29:10Speaker 1: to answer here in double Evis. So I think we're
- 29:12Speaker 1: going to do some more tournaments over in Patreon. You guys,
- 29:16Speaker 1: want to become an all access member, you want to
