- 0:03[SPEAKER_02]: You were about to batake in the deadbuck podcast, and as always, this podcast, no, it ain't suitable for all listeners, especially if you're a child.
- 0:17[SPEAKER_02]: So if you're ready to proceed, I would ask if you were wanting.
- 0:22[SPEAKER_02]: He said,
- 0:42[SPEAKER_02]: Island May 2018, not the postcard version, not the green hills and the Guinness ads for the tourists, it's the real island.
- 0:57[SPEAKER_02]: The one that had clawed its way out of the crash, where the banks are still smelling a bailout money.
- 1:05[SPEAKER_02]: House prices move further away from anyone's reach.
- 1:09[SPEAKER_02]: Just as everyone was starting to believe that the worst were behind them.
- 1:14[SPEAKER_02]: The country felt almost ordinary and safe enough.
- 1:22[SPEAKER_02]: The kind of place where parents still let their kids walk to the park after school, without thinking twice.
- 1:29[SPEAKER_02]: The problem is they're all drunk, because they're Irish after all.
- 1:33[SPEAKER_02]: I don't want to cause any spurtions.
- 1:35[SPEAKER_02]: I'm sure they're good people after all they invented the potato.
- 1:39[SPEAKER_02]: Weste Dublin, where the city thins out into the suburbs, meant to work in class area called
- 1:54[SPEAKER_02]: But there are some spots worth mentioning, like St. Catherine's Park, two hundred acres of trees, grass, walking trails that straddled the country line.
- 2:06[SPEAKER_02]: Yet they put a large park, people that walk in the dogs, teenagers at night drinking, with a beauty that still hadn't been destroyed by the Irish Horde.
- 2:19[SPEAKER_02]: On its border, warehousing estates with semi-detached houses.
- 2:23[SPEAKER_02]: If you walk through it at night, you'd see school bags by the door, the smell of dinner, starting in the kitchens.
- 2:31[SPEAKER_02]: The kind of place where the working class, if they got enough scratch, moved out of the city so they could try to give their kids a quiet life.
- 2:41[SPEAKER_02]: And that's where Anna Kriegel lived, the backdrop to this horror story.
- 2:47[SPEAKER_02]: a sunny Monday afternoon in May, when the park looked green and harmless, and nobody walking those paths could have guessed what was waiting in a abandoned farmhouse just off a clony road, and that's where our story begins.
- 3:13[SPEAKER_02]: was born on the 18th of February, 2004, and Nova Kuvesk, Western Siberia, and placed in an orphanage in 2006.
- 3:24[SPEAKER_02]: The reasons they haven't been documented.
- 3:28[SPEAKER_02]: In about two and a half years old, she was adopted by Gerald Dean Krigel, an Irish woman who worked for the state railway and a French-born husband Patrick, a retired lecturer
- 3:43[SPEAKER_02]: They brought it island, and they kept their original name to make sure she stayed connected to the Russian roots.
- 3:52[SPEAKER_02]: So much so that her adopted mother placed a Russian doll inside a coffin, not a funeral, while flying a Russian flag.
- 4:03[SPEAKER_02]: Every year they celebrated both her birthday and her adoption day.
- 4:14[SPEAKER_02]: the day the court said they could become her parents.
- 4:19[SPEAKER_02]: And Anna grew tall and strong.
- 4:23[SPEAKER_02]: She came from good stock, leggy, five-four-eight by the time she wore four-thin.
- 4:29[SPEAKER_02]: A mother described her as a typical, serbian, unexceptional swimmer, gymnast, and she loved dancing.
- 4:38[SPEAKER_02]: Oh boy, did she love dancing?
- 4:40[SPEAKER_02]: And there were plenty of videos that could prove it.
- 4:43[SPEAKER_02]: doing the latest dance moves to the latest hits, and she was a good-looking girl, too.
- 4:49[SPEAKER_02]: And that didn't go unnoticed once she walked through the town with her skirts right now on her thighs, even the older men would sneak a peek.
- 4:58[SPEAKER_02]: She was model material, and that's no exaggeration, good-looking kitten, with a good future ahead of her.
- 5:07[SPEAKER_02]: Her thought that mother said she would spend hours in the front room.
- 5:11[SPEAKER_02]: Listen to her music, practicing at dance moves, posting videos.
- 5:17[SPEAKER_02]: She loved singing.
- 5:19[SPEAKER_02]: She was planning to learn guitar.
- 5:22[SPEAKER_02]: She volunteered for things, supervising at tiny thoughts, disco one Halloween.
- 5:28[SPEAKER_02]: She was full of fun, madness, laughter, wild, wonderful.
- 5:35[SPEAKER_02]: Just a young girl on the verge of being a young woman and dealing with all those uncertainties and discovery and the power that you have, and it's for the life.
- 5:47[SPEAKER_02]: But for poor Anna, and that life that she was enjoying, her death clock was now ticking.
- 6:02[SPEAKER_02]: As a child, she'd had a tumour removed from her right ear, that left her nearly death on that side.
- 6:09[SPEAKER_02]: She'd had vision problems and learned the faculties.
- 6:13[SPEAKER_02]: In primary school, she was mostly happy.
- 6:18[SPEAKER_02]: But in secondary school, I was harder.
- 6:22[SPEAKER_02]: She craved friendship that she seemed finding a difficult to get.
- 6:27[SPEAKER_02]: She tried hard, but was often disappointed, unloaming.
- 6:32[SPEAKER_01]: She was seen as different.
- 6:34[SPEAKER_02]: She'd matured, early, brass, tall, leaky.
- 6:40[SPEAKER_02]: She was a striking girl with this Russian background.
- 6:44[SPEAKER_02]: She'd walk around with the blue headphones and a head down.
- 6:48[SPEAKER_02]: She'd experimented with the clothes and a makeup, heavy eyeliner.
- 6:54[SPEAKER_02]: And the fact that she looked much older than she was, presented its own problems, getting attention from older men, unwanted attention.
- 7:03[SPEAKER_02]: And she was bullied at school.
- 7:06[SPEAKER_02]: And although she looked older, she was young at mind and very mature, regularly bullied, online, and in person.
- 7:15[SPEAKER_02]: There were incidents of self harm.
- 7:18[SPEAKER_02]: There was a period where she had painted a black eye on herself.
- 7:22[SPEAKER_02]: and claim that she'd been beaten up, and she'd been suspended from school.
- 7:27[SPEAKER_02]: Her mother believed there was an expression of the pain that she felt inside.
- 7:32[SPEAKER_02]: At one point, she was caught sending herself bullying messages from a fake account.
- 7:37[SPEAKER_00]: Her parents would monitor her social media use and are phone after that.
- 7:42[SPEAKER_02]: She spent a lot of time at home.
- 7:44[SPEAKER_02]: She loved the family.
- 7:46[SPEAKER_02]: Regularly texting her parents with updates where she was when she was leaving.
- 7:51[SPEAKER_02]: Send it on pictures, I've just arrived at the mall, I'm leaving the mall.
- 7:55[SPEAKER_02]: She knew it comforted her parents to know that she was safe, but in some ways it gave her comfort to know that they were there and they cared and they were looking out for her.
- 8:06[SPEAKER_02]: There was no doubt in Anna's mind that she was loved.
- 8:10[SPEAKER_02]: Her adopted father Petrick, doded on her, taking her on the school run each day, packing her lunches, putting a little note inside a lunch box, saying she'd tell them, and she loved them, telling them each night.
- 8:24[SPEAKER_02]: She hoped they had beautiful dreams, and that she loved them.
- 8:27[SPEAKER_02]: And speaking of dreams, and a dreamt, of opening her own hotel, called Anna Love Hotel.
- 8:34[SPEAKER_02]: With detailed floor plans and a special cottage where parents could stay.
- 8:40[SPEAKER_02]: She'd written her birth family in Russia and hoped the one they meet her little sisters.
- 8:45[SPEAKER_02]: But sadly, that meeting was never meant to be.
- 8:50[SPEAKER_02]: This was a girl, a child, not a statistic, not a headline.
- 8:57[SPEAKER_02]: A 14-year-old who loved music, and water, and dancing, who was trying to find a place in this world who lived in a quiet suburban corner of Ireland that felt the hour-least, like a safe place, and they'd waited for years to get it, and they wanted to enjoy every moment.
- 9:23[SPEAKER_02]: On the morning of 14th of May 2018, Anna kissed her without the parents goodbye, and she left the school.
- 9:34[SPEAKER_02]: When that was the last time, they saw that daughter alive.
- 9:41[SPEAKER_02]: By all accounts and as last day in this world started like any other day, she got ready, she went to school.
- 9:49[SPEAKER_02]: at school and when no incidents to report.
- 9:53[SPEAKER_02]: Nothing peculiar, let's stood out.
- 9:56[SPEAKER_02]: Once she came home from school, she changed out of a uniform.
- 10:01[SPEAKER_02]: And she went to Lexi Slip Town Center.
- 10:04[SPEAKER_02]: Came home, went up to her room, at around 5pm, at 13-year-old boy.
- 10:17[SPEAKER_02]: Anna's stepmother Geraldine later said that this was unusual because nobody ever called Franna.
- 10:27[SPEAKER_02]: Boyby called and told her that boy A wanted to meet her.
- 10:32[SPEAKER_02]: Anna had a crush on boy A.
- 10:36[SPEAKER_02]: She'd been staring at him and he knew that she liked them.
- 10:42[SPEAKER_02]: A good few inches taller than him, he was teased by his friends and said he didn't really care and joined in making fun of her.
- 10:50[SPEAKER_02]: But for whatever reason, he had decided to meet up with Anna that evening.
- 10:57[SPEAKER_02]: So Anna grabbed her favorite black hoodie, smiled at a father, and said she wouldn't be long, and she left to meet boy A.
- 11:09[SPEAKER_02]: CCTV and phone data would later show the pair walking towards St. Catherine's Park.
- 11:16[SPEAKER_02]: Boy-A was already heading to an abandoned 19th-century farmhouse, Glenwood House, a well-known location for locals, where teens would gather to drink and get high.
- 11:29[SPEAKER_02]: As reputed to be the home of famous architect James Kandon, off Clooney Road in the townland of
- 11:40[SPEAKER_02]: On that sunny May afternoon, I trapped all closed, and I was the day that Anna ceased to exist in this world, and my guess is any other.
- 11:59[SPEAKER_02]: When Geraldine Crickle arrived home from work, around 5.20pm, on that Monday, 14 May, 2018, and learned that Anna had gone out with boy B.
- 12:12[SPEAKER_02]: She was immediately alarmed.
- 12:15[SPEAKER_02]: Nobody calls for Anna, she let it hold the cord.
- 12:20[SPEAKER_02]: She texted her daughter with a simple order, in capital letters, home now.
- 12:28[SPEAKER_02]: Then followed up minutes later, with ants in me now, or I'm calling the police.
- 12:35[SPEAKER_02]: But there was no reply.
- 12:37[SPEAKER_02]: Feeling torn between being an overprotective parent, and genuine terror.
- 12:43[SPEAKER_02]: She walked to the entrance of St. Catherine's Park and scanned the fields, where children played, and people walked to dogs, then searched the surrounding estates by car, with
- 12:57[SPEAKER_02]: by 9pm with Aniston Missing, and the phones still silent that terrified parents went to local police station to report a missing.
- 13:08[SPEAKER_02]: Geraldine stressed that the officers that Anna was a constant communicator who always answered a phone and tax even when annoyed.
- 13:18[SPEAKER_02]: the police treated the case seriously from the outset.
- 13:21[SPEAKER_02]: That same night, officer's visited boy Bees home.
- 13:25[SPEAKER_02]: Who denied, even though in the go.
- 13:28[SPEAKER_02]: Over the following days, a large-scale search was mounted involving officers from several stations, specializing in missing persons teams, the police sub-equal unit who searched the river and nearby waterways.
- 13:42[SPEAKER_02]: around 60 members of the civil defense who brought dogs and drones, family, friends, local volunteers, all walk the area, looking for Anna.
- 13:53[SPEAKER_02]: Public appeals were issued an extensive CCTV and phone location work was carried out.
- 14:02[SPEAKER_02]: On the morning of Thursday the 17th of May, a four-person specialized search team, Sergeant Theclyn Perkel, was assigned to the area that included Glenwood House, the derelict farmhouse, just off a clony road.
- 14:18[SPEAKER_02]: office's shan white and to the building, and saw what he first thought might be a mannequin.
- 14:25[SPEAKER_02]: Then he detected the smell of dried blood, he called for his sergeant, inside one of the rooms they found in his body.
- 14:36[SPEAKER_02]: Three days, almost to the hour.
- 14:39[SPEAKER_02]: Since you got missing, Naked, except for a socks, who would appear to be extensive blunt force injuries, the head, face and neck, the signs of a violent struggle, and yeah, sexual assault, blue builders take around the neck, bloody pieces of wood and concrete block at the scene, but it was the pathologist report that would tell the whole gruesome story.
- 15:09[SPEAKER_02]: The autopsy was held immediately after the body was found on May 17, 2018.
- 15:16[SPEAKER_02]: At the pathology laboratory in Whitehall, Dublin, by Professor Marie Cassidy, then a state pathologist.
- 15:24[SPEAKER_02]: The 14-year-old female was examined following recovery from a derelict property.
- 15:37[SPEAKER_02]: Three fingers of one hand were positioned inside the loop, consistent with an attempt to pull it away.
- 15:45[SPEAKER_02]: Clothing was scattered nearby, an external examination recorded approximately 50 to 60 discrete sites of injury, predominantly concentrated on the head, the face and the neck.
- 16:00[SPEAKER_02]: There were multiple lacerations and bruises to the scalp and face, including 11cm laceration on the left side of a face, four separate impacts to the back of a head and a fracture involving her eye socket, a rubber jar and a smashed in cheekbone.
- 16:21[SPEAKER_02]: There was hemorrhaging present in both of her eyelids with one of her eyeballs, the left, being popped out of its socket, consistent with mechanical asphyxia and neck compression.
- 16:34[SPEAKER_02]: The fence of type bruising and abrasions were noticed on the hands, arms and limbs, additional findings including bruising in the genital and anal region and evidence of attempted
- 16:51[SPEAKER_02]: Nature of the object and whether the deceased was conscious of the time could not be determined.
- 16:58[SPEAKER_02]: But Seaman was found in the anal region and Hamalta.
- 17:02[SPEAKER_02]: Because of death, blunt force trauma to the head and neck, that compression may have contributed, the tape itself was not the primary means of aphyxia.
- 17:14[SPEAKER_02]: Although neither boy A or boy B admitted any wrongdoing and said they knew nothing about what had happened, police were able to put together a timeline from their interviews with the two boys.
- 17:28[SPEAKER_02]: Anna had left the home at around 5pm Monday to meet boy B at the door.
- 17:35[SPEAKER_02]: He told the boy A wanted to meet her.
- 17:38[SPEAKER_02]: She had a crush on boy A.
- 17:41[SPEAKER_02]: She told her father
- 17:43[SPEAKER_02]: Then she said you wouldn't be long, and she walked out the door.
- 17:45[SPEAKER_02]: 40 minutes later, police believed that she was dead.
- 17:50[SPEAKER_02]: murdered in the derelict farmhouse on Clooney Road.
- 17:53[SPEAKER_02]: That night the parents reported a missing, the cops go straight to Boype's house because he's the last person to have seen her.
- 18:01[SPEAKER_02]: He gives the cops his story, which is probably bullshit.
- 18:04[SPEAKER_02]: The next day Boye A and B are walked through the park by the offices during this walk through the park.
- 18:11[SPEAKER_02]: The exchange looks.
- 18:13[SPEAKER_02]: One sergeant says that he believed the looks said that something was wrong.
- 18:18[SPEAKER_02]: the search ramped up, several defense, dogs, drones, and an underwater unit.
- 18:24[SPEAKER_02]: On Thursday the 17th specialised search teams hit Glenwood House, and it's there, the body of Anna is discovered from the smell of dry blood.
- 18:35[SPEAKER_02]: It's now that the forensics start talking when the boy's won't
- 18:39[SPEAKER_02]: Boy-A's boots have been as blood on them.
- 18:43[SPEAKER_02]: His com is on a torn clothing and enraged.
- 18:48[SPEAKER_02]: The backpack and the bedroom contains a so-called murder kit.
- 18:52[SPEAKER_02]: Homemade zombie masks, gloves, shin pads, knee pads.
- 18:57[SPEAKER_02]: The same brand of builders tape that was found around Anna's neck.
- 19:01[SPEAKER_02]: I suppose whatever Irishman takes out on a date and it turns up linked to the boys.
- 19:08[SPEAKER_02]: CCTV puts Boy B walking in towards the park and Boy A headed in the same direction.
- 19:15[SPEAKER_02]: Boy B is repeatedly interviewed by the police, Masi's a minor, his parents are present.
- 19:22[SPEAKER_02]: His first version of the story is that he had no idea what happened.
- 19:26[SPEAKER_02]: When Carbs leaned on him, his second version of events were he brought the girl to the park, so Boy A could tell her that he wasn't interested in
- 19:36[SPEAKER_02]: his third version of events, whether he were actually in the derelict house this time, and he saw a boy A, flip it to the ground, start choking her, and pull in a close-off.
- 19:47[SPEAKER_02]: Then fuckin' her.
- 19:49[SPEAKER_00]: Then he ran.
- 19:50[SPEAKER_02]: He also admits that boy A had talked about killing her wicks earlier, and that he'd given him the tape that he put around the girl's neck.
- 19:58[SPEAKER_02]: And that's how they were charged.
- 20:00[SPEAKER_02]: Boy A, the mug, who got into the rough stuff, the sexual assault, the killing, and the forensics owned them.
- 20:08[SPEAKER_02]: So it was harder than I.
- 20:10[SPEAKER_02]: Boy B was the one who fetched the walk the ring, set her up, and he knew enough, and he watched enough, and light enough that the jury decided he were in on it as well.
- 20:25[SPEAKER_02]: No dramatic courtroom betrayal.
- 20:27[SPEAKER_02]: No one took the stand and pointed the finger at the other.
- 20:30[SPEAKER_02]: The case was built on solid blood DNA and CCTV evidence.
- 20:35[SPEAKER_02]: And let's not forget the rape kid.
- 20:39[SPEAKER_02]: And the change in stories that came at a boy piece on mouth over the hours of interviews.
- 20:44[SPEAKER_02]: That's the path from a missing person call, on Monday night, to two 13-year-olds charged with murder,
- 20:55[SPEAKER_02]: Boy A and Boy B were both 13 at the time, and were charged with murder.
- 21:00[SPEAKER_02]: The youngest ever in the history of the Irish state.
- 21:03[SPEAKER_02]: Boy A was also charged with aggravated sexual assault.
- 21:08[SPEAKER_02]: The trial in 2019 lasted weeks.
- 21:12[SPEAKER_02]: The jury heard about a murder kit recovered from Boy A's home, which contained knee pads, gloves, shin pads, a scarf, and homemade horror mask.
- 21:24[SPEAKER_02]: Forensic's evidence linked by a Seaman, the Anna, and a clothing.
- 21:30[SPEAKER_02]: The blood on his boots were also hers.
- 21:33[SPEAKER_02]: The prosecution case was about boy B, luring Anna to the house, knowing the boy A intended.
- 21:41[SPEAKER_02]: To do what he saw him through.
- 21:44[SPEAKER_02]: Both boys were convicted.
- 21:46[SPEAKER_02]: Boy A received the life sentence with review after 12 years, plus a concurrent 12-year term for sexual assault.
- 21:55[SPEAKER_02]: Boy B received 15 years with review of the eight, lifelong anonymity orders remain in place for both boys under the Child Act.
- 22:05[SPEAKER_02]: Their names cannot be published by law.
- 22:10[SPEAKER_02]: Patrick Kregel died in June 2022.
- 22:15[SPEAKER_02]: Geraldine's victim impact statement is public record, but still hard to read.
- 22:21[SPEAKER_02]: The joy of adoption, the ordinary love, the shadow of plans, the knowledge that no one could have suspected of the darkness waiting in the house, a show walk from the home.
- 22:35[SPEAKER_02]: Island is still a place of green parks in suburban quiet, St. Catherine's park is still there, people still walk its trails, but after May 2018, a certain innocence was gone.
- 22:51[SPEAKER_02]: A country that had little recent experience for pre-meditated murder by children, and as the outline of facts, as they stood up in court, no wiki summary, no sought framing.
- 23:05[SPEAKER_02]: The primary record is what it is.
- 23:10[SPEAKER_02]: A 14-year-old girl walks at her house on a sunny Monday afternoon, because a boy she liked, supposedly wants to talk to her.
- 23:23[SPEAKER_02]: 40 minutes later, she's dead on a filthy floor on a terror-like farmhouse, beaten, stripped, and fucked in every hole it got a given her.
- 23:37[SPEAKER_02]: Left with tape around her neck and more than 50 injuries on her body.
- 23:43[SPEAKER_02]: To 13-year-olds,
- 23:45[SPEAKER_02]: One who planted, brought the kid, did the violence, and one who set her up, walked her into it, and watched the start of it, then lied about it for days.
- 23:59[SPEAKER_02]: Both convicted, both will carry that for the rest of their lives.
- 24:04[SPEAKER_02]: The families will carry it, and then as parents will carry it, a pain that will never end.
- 24:16[SPEAKER_02]: about monsters, about how children could do this, find, talk, but strip it back in the engine as older than any of them, lust, the need to take the control, the hurt for the sake of taken.
- 24:38[SPEAKER_02]: Everything else, the bark, the terror of the house, the mask, the tape, was just a stage for gruesome play, and at the end of that, the life is gone, and the lives are wrecked beyond
- 25:08[SPEAKER_02]: One person decided another person's body and pain belonged to them for a few minutes.
- 25:17[SPEAKER_02]: At the end of the day, Anna Kregel should be alive, but she isn't.
- 25:24[SPEAKER_02]: Whenever the house was just damaged.
- 25:44[SPEAKER_00]: Seems like you would daydream I fixed to the ceiling Looks like you were laughing at me I know you wouldn't laugh at me
- 26:13[SPEAKER_00]: You know I never thought you would die, but baby you did Baby you did It's too bad going to your lips Taste like sweet nectar
- 26:44[SPEAKER_00]: The dirt all in your hair Like a filthy halo meant to be there Such a grave circumstance How it came to this I don't understand Baby goodbye
- 27:12[SPEAKER_00]: Baby, goodbye This is our lost cry This is our lost cry Please don't be upset
- 27:39[SPEAKER_00]: I promise I won't forget And goddamn I know that I'm going to help But it turns me on thinking about your smile Maybe this is our farewell
- 28:07[SPEAKER_01]: This is our goodbyes Baby, this is our last try Oh baby, this is our farewell
- 28:34[SPEAKER_00]: This is our goodbye This is our last cry This is our last cry This is our last cry
- 29:02[SPEAKER_00]: Baby, bye, bye
