• 0:05
Speaker 3: Of course, people are crazy. It's like an hr nightmare. Right.
• 0:09
Speaker 4: One bad hire stole all of it crazy stuff.
• 0:13
Speaker 2: She got what she deserved.
• 0:15
  Speaker 5: Oh.
• 0:16
Speaker 1: I'm your host, Ken Monroe, and every week we dive
• 0:19
Speaker 1: into real life stories from the wild world of work
• 0:23
Speaker 1: and what can happen when the wrong person gets the job.
• 0:27
Speaker 1: These stories aren't just crazy when they are cautionary tales
• 0:30
Speaker 1: about lessons learned the hard way. Let's get started.
• 0:35
Speaker 4: Hey, welcome back to the podcast The Bad Hire.
• 0:39
Speaker 3: Emma Morgan, Glad to have you guys with us.
• 0:41
Speaker 2: Glad to be here.
• 0:41
  Speaker 3: Good stuff.
• 0:42
Speaker 4: I always always like it when you guys are here.
• 0:45
Speaker 3: You make me laugh and good.
• 0:47
Speaker 4: Emma brings me stories. They're heartbreaking and not today.
• 0:53
Speaker 3: Okay, good, I think.
• 0:54
Speaker 4: I'm hoping you. Oh yeah, no promise.
• 0:58
Speaker 5: I can never tell anymore. Sometimes as I share them
• 1:00
Speaker 5: and think they're not that bad, and then yeah, and
• 1:02
Speaker 5: then and then you're like, I didn't like that.
• 1:05
Speaker 3: So we do have some stories today, which is which
• 1:06
Speaker 3: is fun. I'm excited about it.
• 1:08
Speaker 4: Just a reminder, we have the ten thousand dollars contest.
• 1:11
Speaker 4: I know that we're running some ads and doing some
• 1:12
Speaker 4: email and doing some things to get the word out
• 1:14
Speaker 4: to recruiters and town acquisitions specialists who have a lot
• 1:19
Speaker 4: of these recruiting stories. It seems like we hear or
• 1:22
Speaker 4: read a lot of stories from people who are actually
• 1:25
  Speaker 4: the coworkers.
• 1:26
Speaker 3: Yeah, like that was like a really big.
• 1:28
Speaker 4: Yeah, Like I guess they experienced the bad hire.
• 1:30
Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, yeah for sure, which is you.
• 1:33
Speaker 4: Know, kind of interesting to think about the you know
• 1:35
Speaker 4: when when someone does make a bad hire, its ripples, Yeah,
• 1:41
Speaker 4: and you can tell that affects the other people.
• 1:44
Speaker 3: In fact, I have a story today as I was
• 1:46
Speaker 3: just reading through it.
• 1:46
Speaker 4: It was about someone who knew it was a bad hire,
• 1:49
Speaker 4: you know, is worker who knew before they hired them.
• 1:52
Speaker 2: Yeah, that's bad h Yeah. So and sometimes the interview
• 1:56
Speaker 2: process is very enlightening, you know, for sure.
• 1:59
Speaker 4: But so there's a ten thousand our contest. If you
• 2:02
Speaker 4: submit a story to us online at our website, the
• 2:05
  Speaker 4: badhire dot Com.
• 2:06
Speaker 3: You go there and check it.
• 2:07
Speaker 4: Out best story of the season. I think there's that's
• 2:12
Speaker 4: like half the year. Best story of the season will
• 2:15
Speaker 4: be selected and win ten thousand dollars. So we think
• 2:19
Speaker 4: bad higher stories are valuable. All right, so before we uh,
• 2:26
Speaker 4: before we go, I think I got what order?
• 2:29
Speaker 3: Are we going here?
• 2:29
Speaker 2: I think we're going Yeah, it doesn't matter, all right, Yeah, okay,
• 2:34
Speaker 2: we can go online.
• 2:34
Speaker 3: All right, here it is.
• 2:35
Speaker 4: I once had an employee warn me not to hire
• 2:39
Speaker 4: a candidate. Let's call him Bill.
• 2:41
Speaker 3: I always like that.
• 2:41
Speaker 4: When they say let's yeah, they always let call him Bill.
• 2:44
  Speaker 3: It's always.
• 2:46
Speaker 4: She told me Bill rented from her and would sometimes
• 2:49
Speaker 4: show up at his neighbor's house. Oh already naked. Oh
• 2:55
Speaker 4: oh okay, and here's the kicker. That neighbor actually worked
• 3:01
Speaker 4: in my store. So she was saying, please, do not
• 3:04
Speaker 4: bring this guy in here. But my store manager insisted
• 3:07
Speaker 4: we go through with it. He wouldn't take no for
• 3:09
Speaker 4: an answer, so we hired Bill, and right away things
• 3:12
Speaker 4: got strange. He started creating drama, convinced people were after
• 3:18
Speaker 4: him just because they said hello when they walked by.
• 3:21
Speaker 4: A simple high Bill would send him spiraling. He was
• 3:28
Speaker 4: constantly stirring up conflict and making the workplace uncomfortable for
• 3:31
Speaker 4: everyone around it. In the end, all of that chaos
• 3:34
Speaker 4: caught up to him and they terminated because of the
• 3:37
Speaker 4: issues in the constant drama he was creating. He was
• 3:40
Speaker 4: creating drama in his neighbor's yard.
• 3:43
  Speaker 1: Yeah.
• 3:44
Speaker 4: Sometimes you can see the red flags waving before someone
• 3:47
Speaker 4: is even hired, and if you ignore them, you'll almost
• 3:51
  Speaker 4: always regret it.
• 3:53
Speaker 5: Sounds like he needed to be if you were in
• 3:56
Speaker 5: the therapist office and I wonder I sto were working.
• 4:00
Speaker 2: Did they run a background check on him? Like is
• 4:02
Speaker 2: there a public nudity like charge on there? Or like
• 4:05
Speaker 2: is he a pedophile?
• 4:07
Speaker 5: Like? Yeah, why didn't the neighbor report it all?
• 4:09
Speaker 2: Does he have a sex offender? Like?
• 4:12
  Speaker 3: I don't know.
• 4:12
Speaker 4: It seems like going to someone's house naked would have
• 4:16
Speaker 4: been Yeah, if you told the manager, hey, listen, he
• 4:19
Speaker 4: showed up naked one of your coat to one of
• 4:22
Speaker 4: my co workers who works here, Yeah, you would be like, no,
• 4:25
Speaker 4: he would just pass.
• 4:27
Speaker 2: Yeah right, okay, super interesting. It's like they made mistakes
• 4:30
Speaker 2: more so than yeah.
• 4:33
  Speaker 3: Yeah right.
• 4:35
Speaker 4: Well, the managers are always like, I need somebody, and
• 4:37
Speaker 4: need someone even now, I'll take anyone.
• 4:40
Speaker 3: Yeah, Sometimes ticking anyone's not a great strategy. Right here,
• 4:44
  Speaker 3: here's one.
• 4:48
Speaker 4: On our HR team, we cover a lot of cities,
• 4:51
Speaker 4: and let me tell you, some of the most interesting
• 4:54
Speaker 4: stories come out of Florida.
• 4:57
  Speaker 2: Man, I believe.
• 4:59
  Speaker 4: I believe if it's where I where I grew up,
• 5:02
Speaker 4: I'm a careful I believe it. One case that still
• 5:07
Speaker 4: makes me shake my head involved a woman who decided
• 5:11
Speaker 4: the best way to avoid work was just to sit
• 5:14
Speaker 4: in her car all day. Oh my god, not clock out,
• 5:18
Speaker 4: not calling sick, just hanging out in the parking lot
• 5:21
Speaker 4: like that counted as being on the job.
• 5:25
Speaker 3: When she needed to.
• 5:26
Speaker 4: Use the restroom instead of walking back inside, she literally
• 5:31
Speaker 4: just did it next to the car in our parking lot.
• 5:37
  Speaker 2: No way.
• 5:38
Speaker 4: Unfortunately for her, coworker happened to arrive late that day
• 5:42
Speaker 4: and saw the whole thing. He went straight to HR
• 5:45
Speaker 4: to report it, and when we checked the cameras, sure enough,
• 5:50
Speaker 4: the footage confirmed everything. When we confronted her, she tried
• 5:53
Speaker 4: to play it all, saying, how do you.
• 5:55
Speaker 5: Know it was even me?
• 5:57
Speaker 2: Girl? Plead it could have been.
• 5:59
Speaker 5: Anyone you knew, you knew, Yes, we.
• 6:03
Speaker 4: The workers said, those those face tattoos gave you away.
• 6:08
Speaker 2: Oh okay, almost like.
• 6:10
Speaker 4: That a reminder HR doesn't get paid merely enough for
• 6:15
Speaker 4: what they deal with.
• 6:16
Speaker 2: No, kid, I can't even imagine that's going.
• 6:20
Speaker 3: That's like the other side of HR.
• 6:22
Speaker 4: Right, that's like you got the recruiting and talent, you're
• 6:24
Speaker 4: trying to get great people in. Yeah, then you got
• 6:27
Speaker 4: the whole set of HR that's dealing with the consequences
• 6:30
Speaker 4: of a bad hire or somebody got the rails and
• 6:32
Speaker 4: they're you know, HR is constantly trying to Yeah, like
• 6:35
Speaker 4: we have the pieces, and.
• 6:37
Speaker 2: We've had people who have like clocked in and stay
• 6:39
Speaker 2: in their car and like the parking lot here, but
• 6:41
Speaker 2: nothing like that, Like I mean, I'm sure they at
• 6:43
Speaker 2: least came up to use about their It's definitely yeah,
• 6:46
  Speaker 2: that was crazy.
• 6:47
Speaker 1: Before we dive back into the chaos on the bad hire.
• 6:50

• 7:28
  Speaker 1: ex dot io.
• 7:31
Speaker 4: Uh, one more and then I'll turn ittive you. I
• 7:34
Speaker 4: once hired a young woman in retail who at first
• 7:36
Speaker 4: seemed fine. Showed up on time, smile to customers, nothing unusual,
• 7:43
Speaker 4: But pretty quickly things started.
• 7:44
  Speaker 3: To look off.
• 7:46
Speaker 4: Out of nowhere. She started racking up faulty returns. I've
• 7:51
Speaker 4: never been in retail, Yeah, but I assume that's I
• 7:55
Speaker 4: don't know, twelve of them in a single week down
• 7:58
Speaker 4: retail familiar, So they explained, Now, in retail, you expect
• 8:02
Speaker 4: the occasional return, but twelve in a week that's a
• 8:06
Speaker 4: giant red flag. So I asked her what happened to
• 8:08
Speaker 4: all those products? She looked me, straightened and said, threw
• 8:12
Speaker 4: them away, Just tossed brand new merchandise in the tress.
• 8:16
Speaker 3: That didn't sit right. But I held my tongue for
• 8:18
  Speaker 3: the moment.
• 8:19
Speaker 4: Then the very next day I saw her wearing one
• 8:22
  Speaker 4: of the items.
• 8:24
Speaker 2: You're either like, she's just not there or she's ceiling right. Yeah, osba, but.
• 8:30
Speaker 4: You steel something that did were gonna wear?
• 8:33
Speaker 2: That's crazy? Oh, let's wear it outside of the store.
• 8:35
Speaker 4: Like When I call her on it, she got flustered
• 8:37
Speaker 4: and said her sister had bought it.
• 8:39
Speaker 3: Before she worked there.
• 8:41
Speaker 4: The problem that excuse only came out after she was hired.
• 8:46
Speaker 4: The timeline didn't add up and her story fell apart,
• 8:48
Speaker 4: so we fired her immediately, But.
• 8:50
Speaker 3: The story didn't end there.
• 8:51
Speaker 4: A few hours later, she actually came back arms full
• 8:54
Speaker 4: of bags stuffed with the missing merchandise. She stood there
• 8:58
Speaker 4: asking her if we'd give her job back if she
• 9:00
Speaker 4: returned it all. We told her no, and just when
• 9:04
Speaker 4: I thought I'd seen the last of her, she tried
• 9:07
Speaker 4: to file for unemployment. That went nowhere the second. The second,
• 9:11
Speaker 4: the real story came out, but it was a reminder
• 9:13
Speaker 4: that sometimes the boldest thieves aren't the ones sneaking in
• 9:16
Speaker 4: the back door. They're standing right in front of you,
• 9:19
Speaker 4: smiling and hoping you won't notice the skirt they stole
• 9:22
Speaker 4: off the rack yesterday.
• 9:25
Speaker 2: Oh my gosh, I don't know.
• 9:28
Speaker 3: I just think it's so how how how bold is it?
• 9:32
  Speaker 3: To like?
• 9:33
Speaker 2: Bold is a great word to use, because I was
• 9:34
Speaker 2: gonna say something else.
• 9:35
Speaker 3: But great for the right.
• 9:38
Speaker 4: I was gonna say exactly what you're thinking. Yeah, you know,
• 9:42
Speaker 4: but I was just like, how do you how do
• 9:45
Speaker 4: you uh, just to put it on and just walk
• 9:47
Speaker 4: walk into the stores. Yeah, Uh, there's so often now
• 9:53
Speaker 4: people will post themselves doing something. Yeah sometimes not a
• 9:59
Speaker 4: way is legal but definitely not right, Yeah for sure.
• 10:04
Speaker 4: And they post themselves and like be happy.
• 10:05
Speaker 3: About it, you know, like hey, check it out.
• 10:08
  Speaker 4: Yeah.
• 10:08
Speaker 3: And you know, here's what I did.
• 10:10
Speaker 4: We had a somebody applying for a job here and
• 10:12
Speaker 4: we went onto their we looked at some of their
• 10:16
Speaker 4: social media and and we we'd made the job offer
• 10:22
Speaker 4: and her social media had post. Somebody brought it to
• 10:27
Speaker 4: her attention, and after we kind of.
• 10:30
Speaker 2: Announced her, somebody was like that one girl that we
• 10:33
Speaker 2: read about who looked up the girl beforehand, she was up.
• 10:36
Speaker 4: It's like, hey, you know, it's like, hey, we announced
• 10:39
Speaker 4: who's coming to work, and the who is she?
• 10:41
Speaker 3: You know, and she's.
• 10:43
Speaker 4: Got a a ring of friends where they're running in
• 10:46
Speaker 4: the stores and stealing, and she's posting it and bragging
• 10:50
  Speaker 4: about their take.
• 10:52
Speaker 2: Guys, don't do this please. Also, social media screens are
• 10:55
Speaker 2: a real thing, we know because b checks offers them.
• 10:59
Speaker 2: So let's not that guys, be smart. It's also like.
• 11:01
Speaker 5: The people that post on Reddit and hey, I lied
• 11:04
Speaker 5: on my resume. This is how I got away with.
• 11:06
Speaker 2: Exactly how how to navigate like lying on a background check.
• 11:11
Speaker 2: Don't talk about that online like h think you won't
• 11:16
Speaker 2: get caught exactly because we read those stories right here
• 11:19
Speaker 2: on the podcast. Anyways, I only have two stories today.
• 11:22
Speaker 2: They're a little long, but let's dive right into them.
• 11:26
Speaker 2: So the first one is my wife and I own
• 11:28
Speaker 2: our own vocational rehabilitative counseling firm, especially in California's workers compensation.
• 11:36
Speaker 2: That's mouthful. We had three offices in three counties. We're
• 11:41
Speaker 2: basically employment experts. Didn't prevent us from making a horrible
• 11:44
Speaker 2: hiring mistake though. We were looking for a front office
• 11:47
Speaker 2: receptionist for our main office. We interviewed this one female
• 11:50
Speaker 2: candidate that we will call Jane. My wife interviewed her
• 11:54
Speaker 2: and then sent her to me for a separate interview.
• 11:56
Speaker 2: I interviewed her for about an hour. I agree with
• 11:59
Speaker 2: my wife that she was an excellent candidate, great personality,
• 12:02
Speaker 2: very personal, professional, etc. We called references, which all checked out.
• 12:07
Speaker 2: We decided to offer her the job, which she accepted.
• 12:10
Speaker 2: On her first day, she was being trained by our
• 12:12
Speaker 2: office manager at the front desk. I had just finished
• 12:14
Speaker 2: with a client and walked up to her to the
• 12:16
Speaker 2: front desk. I grabbed a stapler off the receptionist desk
• 12:19
Speaker 2: to staple some papers for a client. Jane stated, very certainly,
• 12:23
Speaker 2: what do you think you're doing. I was shocked. I
• 12:27
Speaker 2: actually turned around, thinking she must be talking to someone else.
• 12:31
Speaker 2: She stared at me. The client was waiting to see
• 12:33
Speaker 2: what was going to happen. I ignored her and gave
• 12:35
Speaker 2: the client his papers. After the client left, Jane continued,
• 12:39
Speaker 2: don't take stuff off my desk without asking. I looked
• 12:43
Speaker 2: at her for a moment and then walked into my
• 12:45
Speaker 2: wife's office and asked you to call day.
• 12:48
  Speaker 3: Yes, ok.
• 12:50
Speaker 2: Can you imagine like borrowing a stapler from somebody the
• 12:52
Speaker 2: first day and they're like, don't take stuff off my desk.
• 12:54
Speaker 2: What do you think? What do you think you're doing?
• 12:56
Speaker 2: To the like the CEO of the company, Yes, what
• 13:00
  Speaker 2: do you do?
• 13:01
  Speaker 3: Yeah?
• 13:01
Speaker 2: Okay, And to say that next time you come take
• 13:03
Speaker 2: something off. Yeah, imagine being the client, off your guests, Yeah,
• 13:07
Speaker 2: imagining the client. Yeah, imagine being the client too. You're like,
• 13:11
Speaker 2: what the heck? So then he says, I walked into
• 13:14
Speaker 2: my wife's office and asked her to call the office
• 13:16
Speaker 2: manager into her office. The office manager had witnessed the exchange.
• 13:20
Speaker 2: We discussed the situation. The office manager has experienced with
• 13:23
Speaker 2: a similar issue, but much less intense. Apparently, Jade had
• 13:27
Speaker 2: compulsive boundary and territory issues. We elected to get rid
• 13:31
Speaker 2: of her. We had our bookkeeper cut a check right away.
• 13:35
Speaker 2: I called her into my office. I asked her if
• 13:37
Speaker 2: she thought her behavior was appropriate, considering I owned the
• 13:40
Speaker 2: company and the client was present. Jane went into this
• 13:43
Speaker 2: odd rationale that we hired her and gave her a desk.
• 13:46
Speaker 2: It was her desk, and it wasn't right that anyone
• 13:49
Speaker 2: should violate her space. I told her she was terminated.
• 13:53
Speaker 2: I have her check for a full day's work, and
• 13:55
Speaker 2: she left without incident. Considering our vast experience and vocational counseling,
• 13:59
Speaker 2: my wife and I tried to figure out how we
• 14:01
Speaker 2: could miss such a major personality fallow during too long interviews.
• 14:05
  Speaker 3: Yeah, that's I get.
• 14:06
  Speaker 2: That's interesting. Yeah, Oh I.
• 14:08
Speaker 4: Remember heard that before, some type of personal the boundary thing.
• 14:12
Speaker 2: Yeah, And I mean, I guess it's hard to test
• 14:14
Speaker 2: an interview because you're interviewing them. You're not going to
• 14:16
Speaker 2: touch her, you're not going to ask to see something
• 14:18
Speaker 2: of hers, like you're keeping your space. I don't know.
• 14:22
Speaker 3: Do you have any disorders?
• 14:24
Speaker 2: Yeah? Are you compulsive in how anyway? No, I don't.
• 14:30
Speaker 2: That's a crazy one. But at least it wasn't like violent,
• 14:33
Speaker 2: like I feel like a lot of these are really violent,
• 14:34
Speaker 2: and this one was just some yelling and get off
• 14:38
  Speaker 2: my stapler please.
• 14:38
  Speaker 3: I mean I get it. I mean I respect them.
• 14:42
Speaker 4: We try to let people have their space, their desk,
• 14:45
Speaker 4: you know, and that's yours.
• 14:46
  Speaker 2: And yeah, I don't think anybody's crimes.
• 14:48
Speaker 5: Just so way you go about handling, don't say what
• 14:51
Speaker 5: do you take you're doing?
• 14:52
Speaker 2: Yeah, you can be like please don't touch my stapler please.
• 14:55
  Speaker 5: Yeah.
• 14:55
Speaker 4: Maybe, or if it's like really bothersome for you, then
• 14:59
Speaker 4: just put your stuff the way that you think would
• 15:01
  Speaker 4: be exactly.
• 15:02
  Speaker 3: Yeah. I don't know.
• 15:03
Speaker 4: But day one, Yes, that's very fresh. Yeah, very bold
• 15:07
Speaker 4: again bold, Yes, very bold.
• 15:09
Speaker 2: This one was a different kind of bold though I'd
• 15:11
Speaker 2: say yeah, yeah. Anyways, here's my second story for today.
• 15:14
Speaker 2: Back then, our hiring process wasn't nearly as tight as
• 15:18
Speaker 2: it should have been. We'd bring people on before the
• 15:20
Speaker 2: background checks, criminal reports, and financial screenings were finished. It's
• 15:25
Speaker 2: it's funny because this story is actually a call center
• 15:27
Speaker 2: and they do financial screenings on them beforehand, so I
• 15:29
Speaker 2: found that to be interesting. But also at the same time,
• 15:31
Speaker 2: I can kind of understand not waiting for background scheck
• 15:34
Speaker 2: to come back. If you're just a call center, kind
• 15:36
Speaker 2: of can come but it doesn't clarify.
• 15:39
Speaker 4: But it could be a financial business within money because
• 15:41
Speaker 4: financial information for them money.
• 15:43
Speaker 2: Yeah, it seemed fine at the time. Most people cleared
• 15:46
Speaker 2: without an issue, but every once in a while you'd
• 15:48
Speaker 2: roll the dice and land on a surprise. I remember
• 15:51
Speaker 2: one case vividly. We just hired a young guy who
• 15:53
Speaker 2: claimed he'd been freshly discharged from the military. He fit
• 15:56
Speaker 2: in right away, hard working, respectful, the kind of person
• 15:59
Speaker 2: you feel lucky to have on your team. For a
• 16:01
Speaker 2: couple of weeks, everything seemed normal. Then one afternoon I
• 16:05
Speaker 2: got a call that changed everything. A flat series voice
• 16:08
Speaker 2: on the other end asked me, is he at his desk? Yes,
• 16:13
Speaker 2: I said, cautiously, good. Don't leave him. Don't let him leave.
• 16:17
Speaker 2: That's what they said, don't let him leave. That was it,
• 16:20
Speaker 2: no explanation, just in order, and that was the whole exchange,
• 16:23
Speaker 2: I guess on the phone. So I walked over to
• 16:25
Speaker 2: his desk, hard starting to thump. I played a cool
• 16:28
Speaker 2: and I leaned against his cubicle wall and launched into
• 16:30
Speaker 2: a casual check in, Hey, how is everything going? Everything
• 16:33
Speaker 2: making sense so far? Any questions? He smiled and answered polightly,
• 16:37
Speaker 2: completely unaware that anything was off. Four minutes past the
• 16:41
Speaker 2: the double doors of our call center swung open with
• 16:44
Speaker 2: a heavy clang, and then in walked two military police
• 16:48
Speaker 2: officers in full uniform. The whole room went silent, headset
• 16:54
Speaker 2: slipped off keyboards, stop clicking the whole thing, and everybody
• 16:58
Speaker 2: started staring at him. Without a word, they marched straight
• 17:01
Speaker 2: over my new hire's face, drained of the colors as
• 17:04
Speaker 2: they stood over him. You are now in custody of
• 17:07
Speaker 2: being absent without leaf, one of the MPs firmly said yep,
• 17:12
Speaker 2: pretty much before anyone could process it that he had
• 17:15
Speaker 2: him on his feet, wrist cuffed and were escorting him out.
• 17:19
Speaker 2: The call center was frozen in shock watching the scene unfold.
• 17:23
Speaker 2: He didn't argue, he didn't even say a word, and
• 17:26
Speaker 2: just like that, he was gone. We never saw him again,
• 17:28
Speaker 2: no follow up, no explanations, just the memory of the day,
• 17:32
Speaker 2: the military walking into our office.
• 17:34
  Speaker 3: There's no quiddy.
• 17:35
Speaker 2: I know I'm like what did he think not show up?
• 17:40
Speaker 2: And so they said they just had the memory of
• 17:42
Speaker 2: the day of the military walked into their office and
• 17:44
Speaker 2: hauled away one of our own. After that, let's just
• 17:47
Speaker 2: say we waited for the background checks to clear before
• 17:49
Speaker 2: giving anyone a desk.
• 17:50
Speaker 5: This is funny to me because like I feel like
• 17:53
Speaker 5: that was so dramatic, the marching.
• 17:56
Speaker 2: Oh I know, and cleaning the doors open, like and
• 18:00
Speaker 2: also is he at his desk?
• 18:01
Speaker 5: Like yeah, like I say, is he there?
• 18:03
Speaker 2: You don't leave him? And don't Also like he was like, yeah,
• 18:07
Speaker 2: why wouldn't you say? This is like the militaris, right,
• 18:10
Speaker 2: this is a military. We have a guy that you
• 18:13
Speaker 2: guys have there. He's absent. We need to come get him,
• 18:16
Speaker 2: just at his desk. Yeah some c I A.
• 18:20
Speaker 4: Yeah, so there could be a reason why it was absent.
• 18:22
Speaker 2: It's not yeah true, all right?
• 18:25
  Speaker 5: That was good?
• 18:26
Speaker 2: Yeah, nice, Yeah, nobody died.
• 18:31
Speaker 3: A cliffhanger for me.
• 18:31
Speaker 4: I was like, like, you want another rest of the story, Like.
• 18:36
Speaker 2: Yeah, what he do? I'might have to look this guy
• 18:38
Speaker 2: up somehow. I don't know if.
• 18:41
Speaker 3: Yeah, you know, I don't know. Maybe they don't kick
• 18:44
  Speaker 3: you off for.
• 18:45
Speaker 2: Yeah, you know, what makes me think that it was
• 18:48
Speaker 2: a financial company. Was this story was found on a
• 18:53
Speaker 2: company's site of like the fifteen craziest hiring stories ever,
• 18:57
Speaker 2: and it was a financial company. So maybe all how
• 19:00
Speaker 2: to do with finances? Yeah, for sure? All right, once
• 19:05
Speaker 2: you got for us today, Emma, Okay.
• 19:07
Speaker 5: Ready, I think I have like three maybe three or
• 19:10
  Speaker 5: four I can't remember.
• 19:12
Speaker 4: Well, we'll do them one in time. If it's good,
• 19:15
Speaker 4: then we can progress to the next one.
• 19:16
Speaker 2: Okay. So if not, you're do.
• 19:18
Speaker 3: If it gets too dark, and I'll just calling it guins.
• 19:21
  Speaker 2: Okay, let's go.
• 19:25
Speaker 5: I once had an employee who was a compulsive liar.
• 19:28
Speaker 5: Some of the stories about this guy are and then
• 19:30
Speaker 5: it has a couple of bullet points of.
• 19:32
Speaker 2: Different lies that oh gosh.
• 19:34
Speaker 5: When he first started, he was asked to just bring
• 19:37
Speaker 5: in his ID documentation as part of the supporting documents.
• 19:41
Speaker 5: He said he left it in his car, but would
• 19:42
Speaker 5: go and get it. He left the office, came back
• 19:45
Speaker 5: a short while later, and just at at his desk
• 19:47
Speaker 5: and continued working. When he was asked about the ID
• 19:50
Speaker 5: documentation later, he kind of just shrugged and said that
• 19:53
Speaker 5: he went to go get it but found that his
• 19:55
  Speaker 5: card been stolen.
• 19:59
Speaker 2: Oh my god, I feel like I've heard this excuse
• 20:02
  Speaker 2: before strolling car.
• 20:03
  Speaker 3: And I just can't and I just.
• 20:06
Speaker 2: Yeah, what what else does want to do besides go
• 20:09
Speaker 2: bit at your desk?
• 20:11
Speaker 5: Uh? He would often make sure that he was the
• 20:14
Speaker 5: last person to leave the office, and the next morning
• 20:16
Speaker 5: he would make sure that there's a toothbrush displayed in
• 20:19
Speaker 5: a glass on his desk to make us think that
• 20:21
Speaker 5: he pulled an all night or working at the office.
• 20:24
  Speaker 5: That's a creative looks like he's a hard worker, right,
• 20:27
Speaker 5: I put in so much time.
• 20:29
Speaker 4: I used to know someone who sat their alarm at
• 20:31
Speaker 4: three o'clock in the morning every night to get up
• 20:34
Speaker 4: and send work emails. She would send a series of
• 20:37
Speaker 4: work emails and go back to bed to make it
• 20:39
Speaker 4: look like she was working at three o'clock in the morning.
• 20:41
Speaker 5: He got caught stealing small change off of the boss's
• 20:45
Speaker 5: desk and then tried to blame it on the cleaning lady. Oh,
• 20:49
Speaker 5: he once bought pizza for the entire office. I don't
• 20:53
Speaker 5: asked him why. He said that it was to celebrate
• 20:56
Speaker 5: him being accepted to go study m I T in
• 20:58
  Speaker 5: two years time.
• 21:00
Speaker 2: We looked it up.
• 21:01
Speaker 5: Applications hadn't even been posted.
• 21:03
Speaker 2: Yeah, I'm gonna say you can't.
• 21:07
Speaker 5: Needless to say, he didn't make it through his three
• 21:09
Speaker 5: month probationary period, and let's let go about three months
• 21:13
Speaker 5: after he'd already left, his dad fall into the office
• 21:16
Speaker 5: looking for him. Some time later we got fired.
• 21:20
Speaker 2: Yeah, that's sad. He probably allowed to hiss died too.
• 21:25
Speaker 5: Sometime later we got another batch of new employees. One
• 21:28
Speaker 5: of them heard the stories and said that they had
• 21:30
Speaker 5: worked that guy before, and at the previous job he
• 21:34
Speaker 5: was at. He eventually had to be escorted out by
• 21:36
  Speaker 5: the police.
• 21:37
Speaker 2: Oh my gosh, all these escorts like escorting people out
• 21:42
Speaker 2: on cuffs and everything.
• 21:46
  Speaker 3: Crazy.
• 21:46
Speaker 2: Okay, here's my name, all right. No one was good,
• 21:51
Speaker 2: nobody was on a grill, nobody got nobody got.
• 21:55
Speaker 5: In a bar fight un alive.
• 21:57
Speaker 2: Yes, yeah, it's okay.
• 22:02
Speaker 5: I've only been in the field for about four months now,
• 22:05
Speaker 5: but this is my favorite petty incident. The morning shift
• 22:08
Speaker 5: starts at five am. A lot of guys come in
• 22:11
Speaker 5: a little early and sit in their cars doing what at, reading,
• 22:15
Speaker 5: sleeping whatever. Apparently, guy, they separate these two people by
• 22:19
  Speaker 5: Guy A and Guy B.
• 22:21
Speaker 2: No, nokay, yeah, thing lean and thing too.
• 22:25
Speaker 5: Apparently, Guy A has a fancy European car in which
• 22:29
Speaker 5: the headlights don't turn off. His explanation, not mine. Well,
• 22:33
Speaker 5: guy B parks directly in front of him, like he
• 22:35
Speaker 5: always does. He thought that his headlights were bs and
• 22:40
Speaker 5: was becoming increasingly angry because Guy A won't turn his headlights, So,
• 22:45
Speaker 5: instead of choosing to park somewhere else, Guy B began
• 22:48
Speaker 5: parking at an angle with his headlights shining directly into
• 22:51
Speaker 5: the window of Guy A. He did this for a
• 22:53
Speaker 5: few days before then bringing in a taller truck so
• 22:57
Speaker 5: that his headlights would just fully shine into the car
• 23:00
  Speaker 5: the other guy.
• 23:01
Speaker 2: And it's very serious.
• 23:04
Speaker 5: He saw this in the footage of our security.
• 23:06
Speaker 3: Kit better car. Who does that guy think he is?
• 23:10
Speaker 5: No one told me this was happening until a while
• 23:12
Speaker 5: after this had been occurring, as I don't start it
• 23:15
Speaker 5: by the am like everyone else does. When the operations
• 23:18
Speaker 5: manager finally told me, I just burst out laughing because
• 23:21
Speaker 5: I cannot believe that fifty year old men were acting
• 23:23
  Speaker 5: like this.
• 23:25
Speaker 3: That's not what I had in my mind.
• 23:27
Speaker 4: No, when you had to tell in this story this
• 23:29
Speaker 4: whole time, I'm thinking a couple year olds.
• 23:32
Speaker 2: Yeah, twenty year olds.
• 23:33
Speaker 5: So we had Guy A take some pictures for documentation
• 23:37
Speaker 5: and told Guy B to knock it off. And that's
• 23:40
Speaker 5: when the last of that. And that has been the
• 23:42
Speaker 5: last of that as far as I'm aware.
• 23:44
Speaker 4: Okay, h are involved again, probably yes, solve the dispute.
• 23:50
Speaker 2: I feel like he didn't even like even have to
• 23:52
Speaker 2: tell two grown men not to like act like this either,
• 23:55
Speaker 2: like just go park apart from each other day, I mean,
• 23:59
  Speaker 2: the whole.
• 24:00
Speaker 4: Thing of going and getting I'm going to change cars.
• 24:02
Speaker 3: I'm gonna go get my taller.
• 24:03
Speaker 4: Yeah, just to think that all the way they're driving
• 24:06
Speaker 4: it all the way.
• 24:06
Speaker 5: Show him, well, so war look at my lights higher?
• 24:10
Speaker 2: Why don't you just stay at home if you're just
• 24:11
Speaker 2: sitting in your car sleeping anyways, just stay at almost
• 24:14
Speaker 2: a little later, park somewhere else.
• 24:19
Speaker 5: Yeah, no need to park in an angle and like
• 24:22
Speaker 5: or you can bring go up to them and say, hey,
• 24:24
Speaker 5: can you turn your head lights off? That's just but
• 24:27
Speaker 5: also a petty pot I don't know. Okay, here's another one.
• 24:35
Speaker 5: This is not an HR rep but sat next to
• 24:37
Speaker 5: the bad employee. So this is one of the co workers.
• 24:40
  Speaker 2: We love.
• 24:41
Speaker 5: This worked at a bat worked at a job that
• 24:43
Speaker 5: required an FBI background check because it was a large
• 24:47
Speaker 5: financial company. Your friends prints, list all contacts with police,
• 24:52
Speaker 5: whether they resulted in charges or not.
• 24:53
  Speaker 2: Blah blah blah.
• 24:55
Speaker 5: Basically, they only cared about financial crimes, so unless you
• 24:59
Speaker 5: robbed someone, you were likely fine as long.
• 25:01
Speaker 2: As she was okay, this is what it says.
• 25:04
Speaker 5: Well, this guy started from day one. He was in
• 25:08
Speaker 5: his cubicle having long conversations with his lawyer about his
• 25:11
Speaker 5: upcoming drug drug trafficking trial. He loudly corrects his lawyer
• 25:15
Speaker 5: with no, they said it was two kilos, but I
• 25:19
Speaker 5: only had one and a half.
• 25:20
Speaker 2: Oh okay, But to boost specific, what if what if
• 25:27
Speaker 2: there's something special, what if there's a law you know,
• 25:29
Speaker 2: in that state where that maybe I actually paid.
• 25:32
Speaker 5: Maybe I picked this store because of this little line
• 25:35
Speaker 5: right here. I thought you would, you would like this.
• 25:37
Speaker 5: The check could take up to six months.
• 25:40
Speaker 4: To complete, the background check.
• 25:42
Speaker 5: Yeah yeah, and they would let you start working while
• 25:45
Speaker 5: it was underway. So we were all waiting for that
• 25:47
Speaker 5: to come back. Management her from employees what was going on,
• 25:50
Speaker 5: and evidently had the FBI rush it. So four days
• 25:53
Speaker 5: into two four days in two security guards and an
• 25:57
Speaker 5: HI rep showed up at his desk and walk him up.
• 26:00
Speaker 4: Well, the FBI checks are like mandated. Some legislators think
• 26:04
Speaker 4: through the gold standard and but they mandate them in
• 26:08
Speaker 4: they take it, you know, can take a long time. Yeah, disruptive,
• 26:13
Speaker 4: you got to send people, you know, it's just commercial.
• 26:16
  Speaker 3: Commercial screening is.
• 26:19
  Speaker 2: Superiod story.
• 26:21
Speaker 3: It's, you know, really good.
• 26:22
Speaker 5: I pick this one because they mentioned the background checks specifically,
• 26:25
Speaker 5: like sometimes they don't.
• 26:26
Speaker 2: Yeah, met up in the story.
• 26:28
Speaker 4: But but I see that where companies in the circumstances
• 26:33
Speaker 4: will conduct it and then bring them on.
• 26:36
Speaker 3: Yeah, because they can't wait.
• 26:38
Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean they would never be able to hire
• 26:40
Speaker 4: anybody because no one would wait around. Hey, you're going
• 26:44
Speaker 4: work for six months when the background check is then
• 26:47
  Speaker 4: you'll be able.
• 26:47
Speaker 3: To come to work.
• 26:48
Speaker 4: Yeah, you know, I'm going to go to the donother job.
• 26:51
Speaker 3: So that's what would have all.
• 26:53
Speaker 5: Right about one more, it's kind of short, go for it.
• 26:57
Speaker 5: Ask in the interview if he'd ever been convicted of
• 27:00
Speaker 5: a crime, which is legal in my state and a
• 27:02
Speaker 5: requirement of the job. He said no. We made an offer,
• 27:06
Speaker 5: he accepted, and we read a background check.
• 27:08
Speaker 2: It was four pages long.
• 27:11
Speaker 5: Drug charges, assault charges, burglary charges. Basically if you can
• 27:15
Speaker 5: think of it, this guy had done it. The crazy
• 27:17
Speaker 5: thing is he knew he needed a clean record for
• 27:19
Speaker 5: the job, and he knew we were going to run
• 27:21
Speaker 5: a background check as he had to sign off on it,
• 27:24
Speaker 5: but was still surprised and mad when we rejected the offer.
• 27:29
Speaker 2: We took the offer back. He miss one percent of
• 27:32
Speaker 2: the shots you don't take.
• 27:33
  Speaker 5: Yeah, that's right.
• 27:35
Speaker 4: Or maybe maybe he tried to run some you know
• 27:38
Speaker 4: named flukiness, trying to miss up his name when he applied,
• 27:41
Speaker 4: or put something in where you maybe maybe he read
• 27:44
  Speaker 4: some reddit.
• 27:45
Speaker 2: Artisy, Yeah, he was searching the forums before this one.
• 27:48
Speaker 5: But I but I read that somebody did this before
• 27:51
  Speaker 5: and yeah.
• 27:51
Speaker 4: It worked, you know, so you never know, but it does.
• 27:57
Speaker 4: It shocks us all the time with people. Yeah, of
• 28:00
Speaker 4: our clients, there's you know, vulnerable populations or kids, older parents,
• 28:05
Speaker 4: people and you know that in the hospital or whatever.
• 28:08
  Speaker 3: And.
• 28:10
Speaker 4: You see them apply and you go, I mean, this
• 28:12
Speaker 4: isn't this isn't the place for you right yet? And
• 28:16
Speaker 4: in the future, I know you've had some time, but
• 28:20
Speaker 4: not you know, in the best situation, and you're probably
• 28:24
Speaker 4: not gonna be able to get in. Sometimes even mandated by.
• 28:26
Speaker 3: The government they can't work. You can't work there with
• 28:28
Speaker 3: that kind of record.
• 28:28
Speaker 4: So yeah, probably you're thinking when they apply, but they
• 28:33
Speaker 4: read it, probably probably read some Reddit article.
• 28:36
  Speaker 3: Is that it?
• 28:37
Speaker 2: That's so all nice?
• 28:38
Speaker 4: This one very nice.
• 28:39
Speaker 2: Yeah, good episode, guys like not, I'm not too bad.
• 28:43
Speaker 5: I love these We're not any on a bad note?
• 28:45
  Speaker 5: Did I know?
• 28:47
  Speaker 3: Right?
• 28:47
Speaker 4: I got to try to figure out why they like
• 28:49
Speaker 4: say something cheerful of the way out because and it
• 28:53
Speaker 4: just took us down a rabbit hole. Stories. Uh, you know,
• 28:57
Speaker 4: I think a lot of these stories are are are
• 28:59
Speaker 4: funny and hind site, you know, but the reality is
• 29:01
Speaker 4: they create a lot of stress some people. Yeah, hr
• 29:04
Speaker 4: people and you know the folks that are an human resources
• 29:07
Speaker 4: or the recruiters are you know, and talent acquisition you
• 29:11
Speaker 4: think about when you bring somebody on and you're you're
• 29:15
Speaker 4: in talent acquisition and it's a bit like putting your
• 29:18
Speaker 4: stamp of approval and so you know, it's just a
• 29:20
Speaker 4: bit a bit taxing when you know one of your
• 29:24
Speaker 4: hires is I assume brings a lot of stress to folks.
• 29:28
Speaker 4: So but hopefully afterwards you can laugh about.
• 29:32
  Speaker 2: It for sure.
• 29:33
  Speaker 5: For sure.
