- 0:01Speaker 1: Welcome to Real Talk with Mike D. All right. Welcome
- 0:06Speaker 1: back to Real Talk with Mike D. I am the one,
- 0:09Speaker 1: the only, and the original Mike D. Ladies and gentlemen,
- 0:13Speaker 1: I'm back. I am back from Philadelphia. I am back
- 0:17Speaker 1: from the city of brotherly love. And I am back
- 0:21Speaker 1: from seeing the Jonas Brothers. Congratulations. Well done. I know.
- 0:25Speaker 1: Thank you. Thank you very much for that. But ladies
- 0:28Speaker 1: and gentlemen, I want to tell you something. Philadelphia. It
- 0:31Speaker 1: was an experience. But the reason I went to Philadelphia
- 0:35Speaker 1: definitely was not for cheesesteaks, although I thought about it,
- 0:39Speaker 1: but I did not get one. It wasn't to see
- 0:42Speaker 1: the Liberty Bell, and it definitely wasn't to walk around
- 0:45Speaker 1: and pretend I knew where I was going because I
- 0:46Speaker 1: had no idea where I was going. I was in
- 0:50Speaker 1: the city of brotherly love to see the Joe Bros,
- 0:53Speaker 1: the Jonas Brothers, and what a night it was. Now,
- 0:57Speaker 1: if you know me, you might be thinking, Mike, What
- 1:02Speaker 1: in the hell? The Jonas Brothers? Yes, the Jonas Brothers.
- 1:08Speaker 1: And I am not ashamed of it. Not even a
- 1:10Speaker 1: little bit. Because sometimes you just have to go out
- 1:13Speaker 1: there and enjoy life. And that is exactly what I did. Now,
- 1:19Speaker 1: let's talk about the start of the Philadelphia trip. There's
- 1:24Speaker 1: something about traveling to a city for an event. You
- 1:26Speaker 1: know you have somewhere to be. You know there are
- 1:29Speaker 1: going to be thousands of people there. And you know
- 1:32Speaker 1: parking is probably going to be a nightmare. And yet
- 1:35Speaker 1: somehow you convince yourself, oh, this is going to be easy. Nope,
- 1:40Speaker 1: it never is. You start the trip feeling optimistic. You're thinking,
- 1:44Speaker 1: I got plenty of time. I know where I'm going.
- 1:48Speaker 1: I'll find parking. I'll get there early. Then you get
- 1:53Speaker 1: closer to Philadelphia and suddenly you're questioning every decision you've
- 1:56Speaker 1: ever made. You're looking at traffic. You're looking at people.
- 2:00Speaker 1: You're looking at signs. And your GPS is talking to
- 2:03Speaker 1: you like it has absolutely no sympathy. It's telling you
- 2:06Speaker 1: to turn left, turn right, recalculating, make a U-turn here,
- 2:09Speaker 1: make a U-turn there. And you're like, listen. We're both stressed.
- 2:15Speaker 1: Let's work together here. That's what you're telling your GPS.
- 2:19Speaker 1: Like it's going to talk back to you. But you
- 2:23Speaker 1: know what? After all that, you get there. You get
- 2:28Speaker 1: to the show. And you see the crowd, you see
- 2:31Speaker 1: the lights, you see the excitement. You see people wearing
- 2:35Speaker 1: Jonas Brothers shirts. Well, let me tell you, I definitely
- 2:37Speaker 1: was not one of those people. I would not be
- 2:41Speaker 1: caught dead wearing a Jonas Brothers shirt. There's people taking pictures,
- 2:46Speaker 1: people screaming, people laughing. Everybody's there for the same reason,
- 2:50Speaker 1: to have a good time. And that's something I think
- 2:53Speaker 1: we sometimes forget as adults. We're so busy with adult
- 2:57Speaker 1: things that we forget to have a good time. But
- 3:01Speaker 1: that night, you know what I said? I said, screw it. Tonight,
- 3:07Speaker 1: I'm going to party like it's 1999. And that is
- 3:11Speaker 1: exactly what I did. Now, you're in the venue. You're
- 3:17Speaker 1: sitting in your seats. Then the moment comes. The lights
- 3:20Speaker 1: go down. The crowd gets loud. They get louder. Now
- 3:25Speaker 1: they're screaming. And suddenly, there they are. The Joe Bros.
- 3:30Speaker 1: The Jonas Brothers. Joe, Nick, and Kevin. And the place
- 3:33Speaker 1: goes absolutely crazy. And you can't help but get caught
- 3:38Speaker 1: up in it. That's the power of live music. You
- 3:41Speaker 1: can listen to a song a hundred times at home.
- 3:43Speaker 1: You can hear it in your car. You can put
- 3:45Speaker 1: headphones on. But when you're surrounded by thousands of people
- 3:48Speaker 1: and everybody starts singing the same song together, that is different.
- 3:52Speaker 1: That's an experience. You feel it. You hear it. You
- 3:56Speaker 1: become part of it. And that's what I love about
- 3:58Speaker 1: going to concerts. It's not just about the artists. It's
- 4:02Speaker 1: about the memory you're creating. Now, years from now, am
- 4:07Speaker 1: I going to remember every song that they played? Absolutely not.
- 4:10Speaker 1: I only knew about three out of the list that
- 4:15Speaker 1: they played. Now, I might not exactly remember what time
- 4:20Speaker 1: they came on, but I'll tell you one thing, I
- 4:24Speaker 1: am definitely going to remember being there. I'm going to
- 4:27Speaker 1: remember the crowd. I'm going to remember the energy. And
- 4:29Speaker 1: I'm definitely going to remember saying, holy shit, I'm actually
- 4:33Speaker 1: watching the Jonas Brothers in Philadelphia. Why would I say that?
- 4:37Speaker 1: Because I never thought in a million years I would
- 4:42Speaker 1: be watching the Jonas Brothers in Philadelphia. The guy who
- 4:45Speaker 1: plays heavy metal guitar, the guy who listens to hard
- 4:48Speaker 1: rock and heavy metal is now sitting in Philadelphia watching
- 4:55Speaker 1: the JoBros. But I was. I was there, live in person,
- 4:59Speaker 1: to experience it. And I wouldn't change it. Now let's
- 5:04Speaker 1: talk about something else. Because concerts can make you forget
- 5:07Speaker 1: your age. Well, not really. I mean, I'm 54. Did
- 5:13Speaker 1: I really think I was 25? Hell no! I thought
- 5:15Speaker 1: I was 54. You know, you're standing there. You're singing.
- 5:20Speaker 1: You're moving around. You're having a great time. Then you
- 5:22Speaker 1: wake up the next morning and your body says, What
- 5:24Speaker 1: the hell did you do to me? Your ears are ringing,
- 5:28Speaker 1: your feet hurt, your back hurts, your leg hurts, you
- 5:30Speaker 1: slept wrong, your shoulder's in pain. That's exactly what happened
- 5:33Speaker 1: to me. I didn't pretend I was 25. I'm 54
- 5:37Speaker 1: and I'm in pain. I cannot even handle a Jonas
- 5:41Speaker 1: Brothers concert. What is happening to my life? What am
- 5:46Speaker 1: I doing wrong? I am getting old. That is the problem.
- 5:53Speaker 1: And the sad thing is I wasn't even standing up.
- 5:55Speaker 1: I was sitting down. But I did think to myself,
- 6:00Speaker 1: was that concert really worth everything that I'm going through?
- 6:03Speaker 1: And then you remember the night and you say, absolutely.
- 6:08Speaker 1: I wouldn't change it for a million bucks. Well, I'm
- 6:13Speaker 1: not going to lie. I would change it for a
- 6:14Speaker 1: million bucks. But I wouldn't change it for anything else.
- 6:19Speaker 1: Because some memories are worth being tired and sore for. Now,
- 6:26Speaker 1: Here comes the funny part. And this is true. Everything
- 6:28Speaker 1: I'm telling you is true. But this is crazy true.
- 6:32Speaker 1: How about coming home from the concert? Now, again, I
- 6:37Speaker 1: drove back to the hotel that we stayed at. I
- 6:41Speaker 1: got lost three times just trying to go like a
- 6:44Speaker 1: mile and a half. Because Philadelphia is horrendous to drive in,
- 6:48Speaker 1: at least for me. I come from a small town.
- 6:53Speaker 1: I'm there making U-turns and rights and lefts, going up
- 6:56Speaker 1: wrong-way streets, which that's a fact. I did that coming
- 6:59Speaker 1: home today. I went up a one-way street. I'm like,
- 7:02Speaker 1: holy shit, what am I doing? I got to turn
- 7:03Speaker 1: around and come back. Luckily, nobody was coming down the
- 7:06Speaker 1: street that I was going up incorrectly. Yes. You can
- 7:11Speaker 1: say it. You are an idiot. But let's talk about
- 7:16Speaker 1: leaving the venue. Because thousands of people are leaving at
- 7:21Speaker 1: the exact same time you are. We're all tired. Everybody's
- 7:25Speaker 1: trying to figure out where they parked. And you're looking
- 7:28Speaker 1: around thinking, wait a minute, where in the hell did
- 7:31Speaker 1: I park? And that's when you realize Philadelphia, you actually won.
- 7:36Speaker 1: You won this. I cannot survive in Philadelphia. I can't
- 7:41Speaker 1: drive there. I survived the concert. Now, the only thing
- 7:48Speaker 1: I'm thinking is, Mike, you have to survive the parking lot.
- 7:52Speaker 1: You've got to find your car and get the hell
- 7:55Speaker 1: out of here. And that was a nightmare. An absolute nightmare.
- 8:01Speaker 1: But eventually, you get on the road. And that's exactly
- 8:03Speaker 1: what I did. But what should have taken me ten
- 8:08Speaker 1: minutes to get home took me a half hour because
- 8:10Speaker 1: I got lost three times. I got lost three times
- 8:13Speaker 1: trying to get back to the hotel. Because, yes, Mike D.,
- 8:18Speaker 1: you're an idiot. You are a complete idiot. Your daughter
- 8:23Speaker 1: had to help you get back to the hotel. But
- 8:26Speaker 1: the moral of the story is we made it there.
- 8:28Speaker 1: We made it back to the hotel. And we were exhausted.
- 8:30Speaker 1: We were tired. And all we wanted to do was
- 8:33Speaker 1: go to sleep. But we were hungry. What are you
- 8:36Speaker 1: going to do at like midnight? You're going to order
- 8:39Speaker 1: a bunch of food and have it delivered to your hotel?
- 8:42Speaker 1: And then eat all that and go to bed? No.
- 8:45Speaker 1: So we went to the little food pantry that they
- 8:47Speaker 1: have in the hotel. Pick out a few little things.
- 8:50Speaker 1: Go upstairs. Eat it. Go to bed. Then we wake
- 8:53Speaker 1: up in the morning, this morning to be exact, take
- 8:57Speaker 1: a shower, get dressed, go downstairs, I get a cup
- 9:00Speaker 1: of coffee, we make our way out to the car,
- 9:04Speaker 1: then we start the road home. And I'm thinking to myself,
- 9:11Speaker 1: are you going to have a rough time going home
- 9:14Speaker 1: that you had last night, getting home from the, or
- 9:17Speaker 1: getting to the hotel from the venue? And the answer is, yes,
- 9:22Speaker 1: I did. I had a hard time. I got lost
- 9:25Speaker 1: twice coming home today. But the moral of the story is,
- 9:28Speaker 1: I'm here. I'm here talking to you. And I do
- 9:35Speaker 1: not like driving in big cities at all. I'm not
- 9:38Speaker 1: going to lie. I'm a sissy. I'm a small town boy,
- 9:42Speaker 1: born and raised. I'm not a city boy. I don't
- 9:46Speaker 1: like fast-paced driving, U-turns. And all that jazz. I don't
- 9:52Speaker 1: like it. Matter of fact, it's safe to say, I
- 9:55Speaker 1: hate it. But you know what? Probably the biggest thing
- 10:00Speaker 1: I took away from this trip is sometimes you need
- 10:04Speaker 1: to get out of your normal routine. You need to
- 10:06Speaker 1: go somewhere. You need to see something. You need to
- 10:09Speaker 1: experience something different. You need to give your brain a
- 10:13Speaker 1: break because life can become one giant routine. And that's me.
- 10:18Speaker 1: I'm a creature of habit. I wake up, I go
- 10:20Speaker 1: to work, I come home. Well, I'm already home. I
- 10:23Speaker 1: work from home. So I don't even have to drive anywhere.
- 10:27Speaker 1: You eat, you pay bills, you deal with responsibilities. Then
- 10:30Speaker 1: you go to sleep and you do it again and
- 10:32Speaker 1: again and again and again and again. But every now
- 10:37Speaker 1: and again, you need to let your hair down, go out, party,
- 10:41Speaker 1: even if it's with the Jonas Brothers. You got to
- 10:43Speaker 1: do it. But you know what? I wouldn't trade it
- 10:47Speaker 1: for a million bucks. to seeing the smile on my
- 10:50Speaker 1: daughter's face, the excitement when they came out. She was
- 10:55Speaker 1: singing and dancing to every song. It was one hell
- 10:59Speaker 1: of a night. Well, ladies and gentlemen, thank you for
- 11:04Speaker 1: coming along for the ride. I greatly appreciate it. I
- 11:06Speaker 1: appreciate you listening to this story. And I hope you
- 11:10Speaker 1: got a little bit of enjoyment, a little bit of
- 11:12Speaker 1: laughter out of it, because it is ridiculous, you know.
- 11:17Speaker 1: But as always, I will see you on the next episode.
- 11:19Speaker 1: And please, please be the reason someone smiles. Peace.
