- 0:41Speaker 1: The Fish of By all, Welcome to this week's show.
- 1:01We will continue this week chapter one of the end
- 1:06of this present world and the mysteries of the life
- 1:08to come, all about the end times, as they say.
- 1:13But before we do, as usual, we'll start with a
- 1:14few questions and answers from the classic work radio Replies,
- 1:18and the question asks the priests, did not Christ promise
- 1:22that we should reign on earth with him for a
- 1:25thousand years and that during this millennium Satan would be bound?
- 1:29And the answer that has no reference to a further
- 1:32probation on this earth. The thousand years are to be
- 1:36interpreted in the Hebrew sense of a long and indefinite
- 1:38period of time. Even today we say I could listen
- 1:41to such music for a week without intending precisely seven days.
- 1:46The thousand years refer to the long period between the
- 1:48advent of Christ and the end of the world. The
- 1:51supply of grace is more plentiful in God's mercy, more copious,
- 1:54so that Satan's power is truly diminished, and those who
- 1:58for the love of Christ have learned rise above the
- 2:00things of the earth and live for God truly reigned
- 2:03with Christ. This is perfectly appropriate for our subject of
- 2:07the day, the armageddon, the end of the world. I mean,
- 2:11you know, in other words, we're actually in that time, okay,
- 2:17And no, you cannot say that it's a thousand years,
- 2:20because it's been two thousand years since the resurrection of
- 2:23Christ and very likely it will be at least another
- 2:27thousand years before the end of the world, as we've
- 2:29been discussing. I mean it, you know, the Blessed Virgin
- 2:33Mary says she's going to convert all Muslims to Christianity
- 2:38before the end of the world, and we're nowhere near
- 2:41that that's going to take up very now. Could they
- 2:42all convert in the next hundred years? Maybe? I doubt it.
- 2:49And that's just one example. There are many things which
- 2:52we'll discuss really quite in depth today when we get
- 2:56to the end of this present world and the mysteries
- 2:58of life to come. The true signs at the end
- 3:02times are not here now. As I mentioned, I guess
- 3:08last week or the week before, Christ's apostles fully thought
- 3:11the end of the world was at hand every moment
- 3:14of their lives following the resurrection. And the reason is
- 3:18Jesus kind of intertwined the fall of Jerusalem, the fall
- 3:23of Israel, the destruction of the temple, the dramatic natural
- 3:28events or earthquakes and eclipses and such that happened well
- 3:36during his crucifixion and following there for the next few
- 3:41decades until Rome absolutely destroyed Israel and it was gone.
- 3:45There was no Israel for almost two thousand years. So,
- 3:49I mean they every day they thought the end was
- 3:53at hand. We're two thousand years before beyond that. And unfortunately,
- 3:57many Christians today keep saying it's the end. The world's here,
- 4:00the end of the world's here, the end of the
- 4:01world's here. It hasn't been every time chicken littles run
- 4:05around and said the sky was falling for the past
- 4:07few hundred years, and it's not here now. But there's
- 4:11no doubt that chronologically we're closer to it than they
- 4:14were two thousand years ago. But we're still got a
- 4:17ways to go. So the person says Saint John tells
- 4:21us blessed is he that hath part in the first resurrection,
- 4:25and these the second death has no power Revelations twenty six.
- 4:30And the answer the first resurrection is the mystical resurrection
- 4:34from death of sin. We rise with Christ in baptism,
- 4:38and those who die still retaining the grace of their
- 4:41baptism will rebirth possess a permanent title to the glorious
- 4:45second and actual resurrection of the body in the last day.
- 4:49On such as On such as these, the second death
- 4:52well have no effect. The first death is the dissolution
- 4:55of the body of the soul and body. The second
- 4:58death is the eternal living death and hell. Person asked
- 5:02what do you mean by hell? And they say, Hell
- 5:04is the eternal lot of misery awaiting those who die
- 5:07in a state of grave sin and at enmity with God.
- 5:10Before the general resurrection, the soul alone experiences this misery.
- 5:15After the resurrection, the body will be reunited the soul
- 5:18and will share in the misery being tormented by created elements,
- 5:21even as the person forsook God during life for the
- 5:25enjoyment of created things. The chief misery will be the
- 5:29sense of having lost the happiness of the vision of God.
- 5:32The other will be the torment of fire. And the
- 5:35person says, what evidence do you have that such hell exists?
- 5:39And they answer the very best, The God who made
- 5:42us tells us that he has also made a hell.
- 5:45There is a hell, in which both the bodies and
- 5:47souls of the loss will be afflicted. Thus, the General
- 5:50Christ himself warns us, it is expedient for thee that
- 5:53one of thy members perish, rather than thy whole body
- 5:56go into hell Mark nine nine. Remember that all shall
- 6:00rise someday, the good and bad of life, the body sharing,
- 6:03and the fate of the souls. All that are in engrave,
- 6:07and all that are engraves shall hear the voice of
- 6:09the Son of God. And they that have done good
- 6:11things shall come forth into the resurrection of life, and
- 6:14they that have done evil into the resurrection of judgment.
- 6:17John five twenty eight. Those who are lost will go
- 6:21to everlasting fire. Christ calls it an unquenchable fire, Mark
- 6:25ninety four. He tells us of the grim sentence, depart
- 6:29from me. You curse it into everlasting fire, which was
- 6:33prepared for the devil and his angels. Matthew twenty five
- 6:36forty one. Such a solemn utterance of the judicial sentence
- 6:39demands the little sense judges not speak in metaphors at
- 6:43such moment. Let him be hanged, but of course only metaphorically,
- 6:47and it would be it will be conscious suffering. Our
- 6:51Lord says, their worm dieth not and the fire is
- 6:54not extinguished Mark nine forty three. And again there should
- 6:58be weeping and gnashing of teeth Matthew thirteen forty nine, continued,
- 7:02conscience of suffering is the fate of the lost and
- 7:06reason de man such a faith. When a man sends gravely,
- 7:08he chooses between God and a thing forbidden by God.
- 7:11He cannot have both, and he prefers to or announce
- 7:14God rather than the created good. If he dies without repentance,
- 7:17his will is still alienated from God. He would do
- 7:20the same thing again if he got the chance. And
- 7:22as long as these dispositions last, he must do without
- 7:25God and happiness, these dispositions lasting forever. Once this probationatory
- 7:31life is a probationary life has ever meant to say probationary.
- 7:36So will the penalty. And now let's get into our
- 7:44main subject of the day, and we have been talking
- 7:47about Let me see, well, this is a title of
- 7:50this chapter again, the ind of the world, the signs
- 7:54which will precede it, and the circumstances which will accompany it.
- 8:00We went through part one of this chapter last week.
- 8:02We got to do part two today. I don't recall
- 8:06how many parts there are, but they really should be
- 8:10treated separately. You want to really think about this, meditate
- 8:12on it, and I mean this is heavy stuff. You know.
- 8:18The first of the events foreshadowing the end of time
- 8:22is the one to which the Savior refers in Matthew
- 8:24twenty four when he says, and this Gospel of the
- 8:27Kingdom shall be preached in the whole world for a
- 8:30testimony to all nations, and then shall the consummation come.
- 8:34The second of these signs will be the appearance of
- 8:37the man of sin, the Antichrist, and the third the
- 8:40conversion of the Jewish people, who will adore the Lord
- 8:43and recognize him as the promised Messiah. Until then, says
- 8:47Saint Paul, led, no man deceive you by any means,
- 8:50as if the day of Lord were at hand. Now,
- 8:54we had wonderful news just this past week that the
- 8:58Catholic population of the world has grown to grown to
- 9:00over one point four billion. That's fantastic, but consider they're
- 9:05what nine billion people in the world. Am I right
- 9:09on that? I think that's right. I think that's the number.
- 9:12I read. It surprised me. I thought it was only
- 9:14like three or four but actually when I looked it
- 9:16up last night, I think it was nine billion. Could
- 9:19be wrong, but you can check that yourself. That means,
- 9:22by no means has the Gospel of the Lord been
- 9:26preached to all people. Not that everyone will accept it.
- 9:30But we're definitely not seeing a lot of Jews converting
- 9:34to Catholicism right now, and we're not seeing a much
- 9:36of Muslims convert to Catholicism right now. We're seeing a
- 9:41great deal of Protestants return to the Catholic Church and
- 9:46people who were not affiliated become Catholic. But you know,
- 9:52even though the Catholic Church is actually now larger than
- 9:55it has been in the entire history of Christianity, to
- 10:00go long ways to go. So let no man deceive
- 10:04you by any means. As if the day of the
- 10:06Lord were at hand, it is evident that the last
- 10:09two events which Saint Paul declared are to mark the
- 10:11approach of the Great Tribulation and have not so far
- 10:15been fulfilled. Antichrist has not yet appeared, as we shall
- 10:18show in the next discourse. The Jews as a nation
- 10:21have not yet cast off the thick veil which prevents
- 10:25him from acclaiming God, excuse me, which prevents them as
- 10:28acclaiming as God him whom they crucified. It remains to
- 10:33be ascertained whether at the present time the Gospel has
- 10:36been preached all over the earth and given for a
- 10:39testimony to the totality of nations. Well, we could look
- 10:42at what a billion people out of that population, almost
- 10:47as many people who are members of the Catholic Church
- 10:51who live in China and North Korea, where Catholicism is
- 10:58essentially prohibited. Yes, China is allowing some practice of Catholicism,
- 11:05you know, the Vatican's been working with them, trying to
- 11:07give some freedom to have you know, valid masses in China.
- 11:15But China is an atheist communist country, and to the
- 11:21extent that they do allow it, everything has to be
- 11:25essentially approved and sanctioned by the Chinese communist government. Really
- 11:30not good at all. There are you know, underground churches
- 11:34in China, people who literally worship God at risk of
- 11:37their life. So the vast majority of people in China
- 11:42and North Korea, probably even more so, the Gospel has
- 11:47not been preached to them. So, you know, we've still
- 11:51got a long ways to go, a very long ways
- 11:54to go. Japan, which was once becoming a Catholic nation.
- 12:00For some reason during World War Two, when we bombed them,
- 12:05we hit their main Catholic population centers. Why is that
- 12:10We didn't hit their capital city, we didn't hit their
- 12:13main military installations, we didn't hit their rulers. We hit
- 12:18the poor practicing Catholics in Nagasaki and Hiroshima. Was that
- 12:24because our war department was full of Freemasons or Protestants
- 12:31who had a bias against Christianity. Ever since, Catholicism has
- 12:37been a very small minority in Japan. In fact, most
- 12:40Japanese are atheists. And we're talking about one of the
- 12:43most civilized, cultured, intelligent, educated people on the face of
- 12:47the earth. You know, their traditional religion is Shinto, but
- 12:53Shinto is not incompatible with Catholic belief whatsoever. I mean,
- 12:57you know, there's certain things that have to be reconciled.
- 13:00But if you know, we say we venerate saints and
- 13:04you venerate your ancestors, we've got enough common ground to
- 13:07have a conversation. Obviously, we don't venerate the saints as gods,
- 13:12you know, we venerate them as saints, but there's enough
- 13:16commonality that Japan was quickly becoming Catholic before World War Two.
- 13:21And yeah, you could say this. I think Vietnam. Vietnam
- 13:25was probably the largest Catholic Asian nation before the Communist takeover.
- 13:34There's so much the Philippines, I mean, I you know,
- 13:38Philippines are still pretty strongly Catholic, but the Islamic influences
- 13:44is growing in that part of the world, just very much. No,
- 13:48we're not there yet, no matter what you say. We
- 13:51even though we may have once planted the flag of
- 13:54you know, Catholicism in some of these nations, it's gone.
- 14:00You know, Russia is majority non religious and mostly Orthodox.
- 14:10You know, we could say, well soon, and it looks
- 14:13like it may be soon. The at least the Greek
- 14:16Orthodox will reunite with the Catholic Church. Both sides are
- 14:20working to make that happen, but they have been for
- 14:22almost fifty years now. But they keep saying a little
- 14:25progress is being made here, a little progress being made there.
- 14:30The Russians are so their identity is so wrapped up
- 14:36in their nationality that the Russians are always the big holdout,
- 14:41the ones stopping the Orthodox churches that really would have
- 14:45rejoined the Catholic Church decades ago. It's always the Russian
- 14:50Orthodox that put the kaibash on it, as Kramer would say,
- 14:54off of Sigin failed, right. I mean the Anglican Church,
- 14:58Anglican Episcopal Church is essentially dead. I mean those churches
- 15:02will still be operating in England because it's the National
- 15:07Church of England, essentially funded by the taxpayers of England,
- 15:11even though they're empty. I mean, there's so few people
- 15:14that actually attend Anglican churches, and Episcopal in the United
- 15:18States is less than I think. Since nineteen seventy they've
- 15:23lost over seventy percent of their members. There are essentially
- 15:27dead churches, right, But it's a far acright to say
- 15:32that England is returning to Catholicism just yet. You know,
- 15:37even though you know, it is legal to be Catholic
- 15:40in England. Again, it wasn't when my ancestors left. That
- 15:43was one of the main reasons they left. But it
- 15:48is legal. There's you know, the percentage of Catholics practicing
- 15:52in England is not that big. I don't if it's
- 15:56a ten percent, I don't think it is. You know,
- 15:59at one point England was one of the most populous
- 16:02and powerful Catholic nations on Earth. France has never recovered
- 16:07from the French Revolution. At one point, France was a
- 16:10larger and more powerful Catholic nation than Italy and Rome
- 16:15Rome Italy, I guess, as sure said, but you know,
- 16:21even though at one point the Gospel was brought to
- 16:25those nations. So many generations have passed from the time
- 16:31of Saint Francis to Saul, you know, and Saint Francis
- 16:35is sal right around sixteen hundred, I guess, to the
- 16:39French Revolution in you know, the mid seventeen hundreds to now,
- 16:44when essentially France is a majority Atheists, Agnostic and Muslim nation.
- 16:52Christians are a minority. Now in America, the exact opposite
- 16:55has happened. Catholicism is now the largest Christian denomination in
- 17:02the entire United States. In America, where it was illegal
- 17:06to be Catholic for a good bit of our history.
- 17:09It was illegal to be Catholic in North Carolina until
- 17:11the Civil War, I mean just right before the Civil War.
- 17:14They finally allowed one church. But you couldn't vote or
- 17:18own property in North Carolina or most of the United
- 17:20States if you were a Catholic outside of Maryland and
- 17:25that was a carve out thanks to the Carroll family.
- 17:28Charles Carroll my ancestor. He also happened to be the
- 17:32richest man in the United States. And if the United
- 17:34States went to revolt against England, they had to allow
- 17:38Catholics to at least have one little corner, one little
- 17:41carve out, and they didn't like that. In fact, one
- 17:43of the causes of the American Revolution was that England
- 17:46had just taken over Canada and was going to allow
- 17:49the French in Quebec to practice Catholicism, and our great
- 17:54religiously tolerant founding fathers were all up in arms over it, saying,
- 18:00if England allows Catholicism in Canada, next thing you know,
- 18:03it's going to be allowed in the United States. We
- 18:05have to revolt. That was literally, like one of the
- 18:07three main causes of the American Revolution was because they
- 18:11did not want Catholicism practice in the United States whatsoever.
- 18:16This has never been a land of religious plurality and freedom,
- 18:20as our document state, It just is, never was. It's
- 18:23a myth. And now it's a secular country. I mean,
- 18:28where Catholics can be prosecuted for praying the Rosary, else
- 18:31to have an abortion clinic. This has never been a
- 18:33place of religious freedom. But ironically, now Catholicism is the
- 18:40largest Christian denomination in the United States, and in the
- 18:42next thirty years, the number of Catholics in the United
- 18:46States will outnumber all Protestant denominations combined. All combined, America
- 18:54will be the largest and most powerful Catholic nation on
- 18:58earth within the next thirty years. And that is just
- 19:02absolutely amazing. It shows how, you know, God's always working
- 19:06things behind the scenes, you know, even using bad people
- 19:11for good purposes, even using the Freemasons to found a
- 19:15Protestant nation which within two hundred and fifty years would
- 19:18become a Catholic nation, which is absolutely amazing when you
- 19:22think about it. But anyway, let's give them onto it.
- 19:26So we would say then that even though in our
- 19:29day and time there have been missionaries that have gone
- 19:31to every nation and people, even once Catholic nations, you know,
- 19:35have generations who have never been taught the Catechism in
- 19:39any way, shape or form, may have never been the
- 19:42Bible's never even been read to them. You know, they
- 19:44know nothing of Jesus, you know, or his church. All right,
- 19:51So yes, the Jews have not yet converted. Obviously, on
- 19:57this point the fathers and doctors are divided. Some say
- 20:00that the words of Christ are to be interpreted morally
- 20:03and should be understood in the sense of a part
- 20:05of a partial summary preaching. For them to be fulfilled,
- 20:09it is enough that missionaries should have enlightened a certain
- 20:12number of individual minds in the various parts of the
- 20:15inhabited earth, and that on each dessert and remoted hillside
- 20:18the cross should have been raised at least once. Others,
- 20:21more numerous, like Saint Jerome and Beattie, insists that the
- 20:25words of the Son of God should be understood in
- 20:28the strictest and most literal sense. Cornelius, what is the
- 20:35word lapide lapede? Honestly, I've never seen that word before.
- 20:40Cornelius A Lapede, the most learned of the interpreters of
- 20:45the Sacred Books, expresses the opinion that the end of
- 20:48times would not come, and the Christianity has been not
- 20:51only proclaimed, but propagated and propagated. Sorry not only proclaimed
- 20:55and propagated, but established and organized, and has persisted at
- 21:00the level of a public institution among men of every
- 21:03race and nationality in such a way that before the
- 21:06centuries have run their course, there will not be a
- 21:09single Barbarian shore, not one island lost in the ocean,
- 21:13or any place at present unknown in the two hemispheres
- 21:16where the Gospel has not shown in all its splendor,
- 21:20where the Church has not made herself manifest in her legislation,
- 21:23her solemnities, and hierarchy, including the bishops and lower clergy.
- 21:28In a word, where the great prophecy there will be
- 21:32one fold and one shepherd has not been completely fulfilled.
- 21:35What does that mean? That means before the end of
- 21:37the time, the Catholic Church will be present in every country,
- 21:44and not just present, but the Protestants will have returned
- 21:48to the Catholic Church. Now, I don't know about you,
- 21:51but if you, I've talked with several Baptists and Seven
- 21:54day Adventists and Jehovah's Witnesses and Mormons lately, and they
- 21:58hate Catholics. They hate Catholics. Was such a passion, There's
- 22:01no way we're close to that. But also that the holidays,
- 22:08the feast days of the Catholic Church would be celebrating
- 22:11all nations. Well, we just had Corpus Christie. Did your
- 22:16town come to a stop and celebrate a procession, a
- 22:20parade of Corpus Christie down Main Street, Wall Street, New
- 22:25York Times Square. I didn't see it. I mean, the
- 22:30stores were still operating, and you know, most people still
- 22:34going about their regular business. And only Catholics recognize that. Well, see,
- 22:38before the end of time, literally, according to Cornelius and
- 22:44Beattie and all that and all that. As I just said,
- 22:47the laws of nations will be in accord with Catholic morality.
- 22:54In America, divorce is not only legal, but more common
- 22:58than marriage. You know, unions that stay together. That wouldn't
- 23:05be now again that's a questionable point, but at least
- 23:11everyone would know the moral teachings of the Church and
- 23:15have been morally instructed for you know that prophecy to
- 23:20be fulfilled that there would be one fold and one
- 23:23shepherd means literally all Christians in one church. So the
- 23:27Orthodox schism has stopped. They have to come back in
- 23:30and all Protestants have to become Catholic again before the
- 23:33end of the world. And I'm telling you it's a
- 23:36long ways off. So you know, we're not there yet.
- 23:39No matter what somebody tries to scare you on television
- 23:42and say, send money for this book and about the
- 23:45end times or whatever. No, we're not there, so we
- 23:50incline to this latter opinion. It is more in harmony
- 23:53with the testimony of Holy Scripture. It is more in
- 23:55accord with the wisdom of the mercy of God, who
- 23:57makes no distinction between the civilized and the barbarie Greeks
- 24:01and Jews, but desiring the salvation of all men, to
- 24:04exclude any of them from the light and gift of redemption. Finally,
- 24:08it accords better with the ways of Providence, which shows
- 24:10an equal solicitude for all peoples and calls them in
- 24:14turn to the knowledge of its law and the time
- 24:16appointed by immutable decrees. One need only glance at a
- 24:22map to recognize that the Gospel law is far from
- 24:25having been promulgated to all the peoples. Yeah, just think
- 24:28about all the Muslim nations right now. God wants to
- 24:31save everybody. So Iran would have to cease being an
- 24:35Islamic state, the United Arab Immirates would have to become Catholic,
- 24:41Saudi Arabia would have to become a Catholic nation. We're
- 24:45long ways that all right, So far from having been
- 24:49promlgated to all peoples, and that innumerable multitudes at the
- 24:52present time remained sunk in darkness and do not possess
- 24:55the slightest shadow of revealed truth. Thus, Central Asia and
- 24:59the mountains of Tibetan have so far defied the endeavors
- 25:02of our most intrepid missionaries. True to this day, no
- 25:05one has yet been able to give us an exact
- 25:07account of the social and religious customs of the peoples
- 25:10of Equatory and Africa was in the eighteen nineties. I
- 25:13think we pretty much know what they're all about now.
- 25:15But in spite of the recent discovery of the great
- 25:17Lakes and high table land, where formerly there was held
- 25:20to be nothing but sand in desert, British and other
- 25:23nations have established colonial outposts on the shores of the
- 25:26South Seas, but the interior of these vast continents has
- 25:29yet to be explored. Well. Since the eighteen nineties we
- 25:31pretty much explored a lot, and missionaries are gone, but
- 25:36it does not mean that they've become Catholic nations by
- 25:39any means. Clearly, the Gospel has not yet been preached
- 25:43as a testimony to all nations. Can we even say
- 25:47that it has been proclaimed with sufficient luster and in
- 25:50such a way as to leave with no excuse those
- 25:54who over the greater part of this earth in all
- 25:57provinces of India and China, and in most of the
- 25:59archipelas age archipelaggios. That's hard for're to say archipelag shows
- 26:06have refused to obey it. What would be the effect
- 26:10of twenty one hundred, or if you wish one thousand
- 26:13priests in evangelizing a country like France, implanning knowledge of
- 26:17our divine mysteries and stirring up the fires of charity.
- 26:20China alone, in view of its immense population, is far
- 26:24removed from the comparison we've just made. Among the three
- 26:27hundred and forty million in habits, which is now a billion,
- 26:30of this vast empire, the greater number either have never
- 26:34heard of our religion or only a vague incomplete idea
- 26:37of it. They live and die without ever having met
- 26:40a priest. True more true now than in eighteen ninety,
- 26:44before the Communist Revolution when this book was written. Africa,
- 26:48leaving aside the northern provinces, numbers only five or six
- 26:51mission stations along the coast, extending more than two thousand
- 26:55leagues on each page of the Annals of Propaganda, we
- 26:59find this sorrowful strain welling from the hearts of the apostles.
- 27:03Pray ye, therefore, the Lord of the harvest, that he
- 27:05sends laborers into his harvest. Now it has written that
- 27:09at the end of time the Gospel will have been
- 27:11given as a testimony to all nations. David cries out,
- 27:14all the ends of the earth shall remember and shall
- 27:17be converted to the Lord. For the kingdom is the Lord's,
- 27:20and he shall have dominion over the nations. Further On,
- 27:24David continues, and he shall rule from sea to sea,
- 27:27from the river, and to the ends of the earth.
- 27:29Before him, the Ethiopian shall fall down, the kings of
- 27:32the Arabians and of Saba shall bring gifts. The Lord
- 27:37then speaks through Isaiah to the Church enlarge the place
- 27:41that thy tent stretch out, the skins of thy tabernacles
- 27:44spare not lengthen thy cords and strengthen thy stakes, for
- 27:49thou shalt pass on to the right hand and to
- 27:51the left, and thy seed shall inherit the gentiles, and
- 27:56shall inherit the desolate cities. These texts are explicit, precise.
- 28:01It is clear from their testimony that there will come
- 28:03a time and all heresies and schisms will be overcome.
- 28:07Imagine that all Baptists will become Catholic, all Greek Orthodox
- 28:11will become Catholic, all Russian Orthodox become Catholic, all Mormons
- 28:15will become Catholic, All Muslims and Buddhists will become Catholic.
- 28:20That's what God promised anyway, and the true religion known
- 28:25and practiced by everyone in all places illuminated by the sun. Now,
- 28:30of course, people can refuse to practice any religion. That
- 28:32doesn't mean everybody on earth is going to become a
- 28:34Christian or become Catholic. People raise a Catholic family fully
- 28:39catechized often leave the church and become atheists. What it
- 28:44means is every single religion will dissolve into one, and
- 28:51the only religion on earth will be the Holy Catholic Church,
- 28:54the True Church of Christianity. This unity will surely not
- 28:59be achieved. Mankind will not reach this Golden Age along
- 29:03the paths strewn and with roses, who will not reach
- 29:08his golden Angel and past rooms with roses. The foundations
- 29:12of the Church were built up with the blood of martyrs,
- 29:14mingled with the sweat of the apostles. So we must
- 29:17expect strife and bitter resistance. Blood will be shed, the
- 29:21spirit of darkness will once more throw up its seductions
- 29:25and wild's wiles in abundance. We may count on there
- 29:29being more terrible persecutions of the Church than those which
- 29:32she has sustained hitherto. And remember this is written in
- 29:35eighteen ninety, just before the Bolshevik Revolution and the horrors
- 29:39of communism, So he was very prescient on that. On
- 29:42the other hand, we must learn to scrutinize the thoughts
- 29:46of God and to read from the decrees of His power.
- 29:49All the admirable inventions of modern times had their divinely
- 29:52appointed end, Would God in our days have given man
- 29:56a glimpse of the secrets hidden in treasures of creation?
- 30:00He have put into his hands all those marvelous instruments
- 30:03such as steam, magnetism, electricity, etc. For the sole purpose
- 30:07of providing a new spur to his pride, or of
- 30:11being the docile slaves of his selfishness and greed. Such
- 30:14was not the thought which he expressed by the voice
- 30:17of the prophet when he said I would give wings
- 30:19to my word harness fire to my chariot, seese my
- 30:23apostles as if they in a whirlwind, and transport them
- 30:26in the twinkliam and eye, and amidst the barbarian nations.
- 30:30Thus the time is near when Christ will gain complete triumph,
- 30:33when in very truth he can be called Lord of
- 30:36the Earth. At present many signs point to a great
- 30:42victory for Christianity. And does not our enemy have a
- 30:46present time? Does not have a hm. Does not our
- 30:49enemy have a presentiment of it? And an idea that's coming?
- 30:54Not a word I have ever used before. Presentiment does
- 30:58not a secret instinct warned them that the days of
- 31:01their power are numbered, and that the time when it
- 31:04is given to them to prevail cannot be of long duration.
- 31:07That is why. And they are impatience to throw off
- 31:10the mask from every hypocrisy and the evil war that
- 31:13they are waging against the Church. They resort to all
- 31:15kinds of malevolent depravity and every hospital act of shady
- 31:19atheistic politics. The revolution boldly raises its standard against religion
- 31:25properly and the family, Its SAPs the foundations of the
- 31:29social structures and Malsi's attack upon us simultaneously on every
- 31:34front the press, freed from every restraint, disseminates the most
- 31:38subversive doctrines and the deadliest poisons in a thousand organs.
- 31:42The venerable throne of the Holy see attack with satanic audacity,
- 31:47depicted as a center of ignorance and obscuritism, as a
- 31:51blot on the splinters of our civilization, has finally succumbed
- 31:55before the mass of concerted efforts. It has collapsed utterly,
- 31:58so that humanly speaking, it is impossible to entertain any
- 32:02hope of its being able to soon rise again. We
- 32:05can understand that in such a situation the mighty should
- 32:09feel irresolute, and their counsel and their courage and constancy
- 32:13seemed to falter. We can understand that beyond the clouds
- 32:17and troubled horizons they discerned somber prospects and predict a
- 32:21renewed outbreak of crime, wars, and frightful upheavals. Yet it
- 32:25is precisely this incredible audacity and the continuallyiscent renascent fury
- 32:33of our enemies, which gives us hope of a glorious
- 32:35new era for the Church. And my word, if he
- 32:38could have just known, what would happen in the nineteen hundreds.
- 32:41The wars, the crimes, the horrors, some things are unimaginable
- 32:46in eighteen ninety. I mean, they knew of wars. They
- 32:49did not know of nuclear weapons. They did not know
- 32:52of concentration camps and gas chambers, they did not know
- 32:56of tanks at this point, you know, dropping bombs. And
- 33:03more people are killed in the twentieth century than in
- 33:06all centuries before, combined in wars and forced killings by
- 33:12communists and socialist nations, genocides as we would call them.
- 33:16All right, let's see. Yet it's precisely the incredible audacity
- 33:24and the continued Yeah, I just said that Christian in
- 33:27our days is being attacked everywhere in the arts and
- 33:29science and the church and state in Europe as well
- 33:32as Asia and the Old and New World. And a
- 33:35sure sign that it would triumph everywhere. When will this be,
- 33:38God knows, but the fact is certain. The blood of
- 33:41the martyrs becomes the seeds of Christians. The Church has
- 33:44immutable promises. As she comes out of the Red Sea,
- 33:48she enters into the Promised Land. The hour of darkness
- 33:51gives way to that of light and triumph. Following the
- 33:54outrages of Golgatha. She hears resounding around her the blessings
- 33:58of his hosannas of the deliverance. Let us not lose heart,
- 34:03Let us rejoice at what the future holds. And if
- 34:06at the present time our country is a prey to
- 34:08convulsions and torn by discord, discord, if her fortune and
- 34:12political influences have become a prize fought over by unsatisfied, ambitious,
- 34:18and vulgar non entities, like the prodigal son of the Gospel,
- 34:22it would not be long before the memory of the
- 34:25peace and honor of the centuries of her youth returned
- 34:28to her mind. She would cast off her chains and
- 34:31the mask of her ignomy. And she would cast off
- 34:36her chains and the mask of her ignomy. And once
- 34:39again there will be brilliant pages to be written in
- 34:42the book which bears the title just today of pro Francois. Okay,
- 34:46so he was French, father Armagnalls, French, and he was
- 34:49saying France would once again become a great and Catholic nation.
- 34:54It has not yet, so been over one hundred years
- 34:59since he wrote this. We're still waiting yet. Even if
- 35:02the end of the world were to be deferred for
- 35:04many centuries. What are centuries compared to the years of eternity?
- 35:08A second instant more fleeting than lightning. When the Sun
- 35:11of God was raised up to heaven, seated upon a cloud,
- 35:14the apostle could not take their eyes from the place
- 35:18in the sky where he had vanished. Suddenly, two angels
- 35:20in white garments appeared to them and said, ye, men
- 35:23of Galilee, what why stand you looking up to heaven?
- 35:27This Jesus who has taken up from you into heaven
- 35:30shall so shall so come as you have seen him
- 35:34going into heaven elsewhere. Christ is a little while and
- 35:39now you shall not see me. And again a little
- 35:41while and you shall see me, because I go to
- 35:43the Father. Nevertheless, although Christ intended to leave us in
- 35:47ignorance concerning the exact time at the end of the world,
- 35:50he deemed it fitting to give us detailed information on
- 35:53the matter and circumstance of this great event. The end
- 35:56of the world, he says, will happen instantaneously and on expectedly.
- 36:01It will come at a time with the human race
- 36:03sunk it in the uttermost depths of indifference, will be
- 36:07far from thinking about punishment and justice. Divine Mercy will
- 36:10have exhausted all its resources and means of action. Antichrist
- 36:15will have appeared. Men over the whole surface of the
- 36:18earth will have been called to the knowledge of the truth.
- 36:20The Catholic Church will have blossomed out into the fullness
- 36:23of her life and effecking the fecundity fertility essentially for
- 36:30the last time. Nevertheless, all these supermunded favors and prodigies
- 36:35will once more vanish from the heartsome memory of man
- 36:38by a criminal abuse of graces. Mankind will have returned
- 36:41to its vomit, concentrating their affections, and there are aspirations
- 36:46on the goods and gross pressures and pleasures of this world.
- 36:50They will, as the Sacred Books tell us, have so
- 36:53far turned their backs to God as to be unable
- 36:56to look up to Heaven and remember its just judgments.
- 36:59All faith will be extinguished in the hearts all flesh.
- 37:02We have been corrupted in its ways. Divine Providence will
- 37:05judge that it is beyond remedy, as Christ said, It
- 37:09will be as in the days of Noah. At that time,
- 37:12men lived without a care, made plantations, built luxurious homes,
- 37:17poked fun at the old fellow Noah, as he set
- 37:20himself up as a carpenter and work day and night
- 37:22building his arc. Madman dreamer, they would say, this went
- 37:26on till the day when the flood came and engulf
- 37:28the whole earth. The flood came and destroyed them all Luke,
- 37:31seventeen twenty seven. Thus the final catastrophe will take place
- 37:35when the world is at its most secure. Civilization will
- 37:39be at its zenith. Markets will be overflowing with money,
- 37:41and government stocks will have never been higher. There would
- 37:45be nation national celebrations, great exhibitions, and mankind wallowing in
- 37:50the unpreceded material Prosperity will have ceased to hope for
- 37:54heaven crudely attached to the basest pleasures of life, Men
- 37:58like the miser and the gods will say, my soul,
- 38:01you will possess your goods for many a year, Eat, drink,
- 38:04and be merry. Suddenly, in the midst of the night
- 38:06in Medea nocta nocta, For it will be amidst the darkness,
- 38:13And at this fateful midnight hour when the Lord once
- 38:16appeared in his lowliness, that he will appear again. Men
- 38:20startled out of their sleep, will hear a great clamor
- 38:23and noise, and a voice will be heard saying, behold
- 38:26the bridegroom cometh, Go gee forth and meet him. And
- 38:30the annals of Savoy the memory and tradition is preserved
- 38:34of an appalling catastrophe which presents us the image and
- 38:39outline of what will happen when God abandons the human
- 38:42race and his patience is finally exhausted. It was seven
- 38:45hundred years ago, on the twenty fourth November twelve forty eight,
- 38:49the eve of the day when the Church celebrates the
- 38:51feast of Saint Catherine. That evening, the season was mild,
- 38:54the air was calm, and the stars twinkling with the sky.
- 38:57The whole valley where the present town of Chamber is situated,
- 39:01lay quiet and secure. An evil, irreligious man then ruled
- 39:05tyrannically over a town now gone forever, but which at
- 39:08that time stood next to the city of my story.
- 39:11This man had gathered together a large number of merry companions.
- 39:14He was celebrating with banquets and drunken revelry, the sacrilegious
- 39:18plunder of a monastery, which he had turned to profane
- 39:22use after mercilessly expelling the monks and holy inmates, who
- 39:26were the legitimate owners. Probably as in Balthazar's time, it
- 39:31was a sumptuous meal, and the wine and liquors, mingled
- 39:33with blasphems and sardanic laughter, flowed in abundance. Suddenly, in
- 39:37an instant, in the middle of the night, the earth
- 39:40was shaken with a tremendous shock. Sky and ground seemed
- 39:43to be shaken by horrible whirlwinds, voices and howlings of
- 39:48storms which you would have thought came from the caverns
- 39:51of hell. And before the guests could rise to their feet,
- 39:53before they could utter a cry from help, they were
- 39:56buried alive beneath the collapsing mass of a gigantic mountain.
- 40:01One town, five hamlets, a whole region of six thousand
- 40:04inhabitants were engulfed in the chasms, the traces of which
- 40:08are written in indelible characters on the fragments of our souls,
- 40:12and remain as an ineffaceable and living memory of mingled
- 40:18legend horror in the minds of our people. And there's
- 40:20a footnote here. It says this town, thriving in the
- 40:24thirteenth century, was the town of Saint Andre four and
- 40:27a half miles through Chaanbury. It was the center of
- 40:30the ecclesiastical Deanery of Savoy. And this was actually a
- 40:35historical event. Yeah, you can look that up. Okay, So
- 40:40he goes on. This image barred from one of the
- 40:42most memorable and dreadful events that have occurred in our history,
- 40:45is in one sense more vivid and striking than that
- 40:47of Noah and the Flood, For at least at the
- 40:50time of Noah and the flood, men had time to
- 40:52collect their thoughts and obtain the grace of repentage before
- 40:55they perished, and the disaster struggling gradually. If all did
- 40:59not succeed in saving themselves for the present life, Saint
- 41:02Peter tells us explicitly that the greater number return to
- 41:05God and save themselves for the life to come. In
- 41:09his First Epistle, Chapter three, verses nineteen twenty, he says
- 41:12that when the holy soul of Jesus Christ had been
- 41:15separated from his body, he preached those spirits that were
- 41:17in prison, which had been for some time incredulous, and
- 41:20when they waited for the patience of God in the
- 41:22days of Noah. On the day of judgment, however, it
- 41:25will be as at the abyss of Mayan, at the
- 41:29foot of the hill of Saint Andre. It will all
- 41:32happen with unparalleled promptness and violence. Christ tells us that
- 41:37this is on that he. Christ tells us, he that
- 41:41is on the housetop, let him not come down and
- 41:43take anything out of his house, and he lies in
- 41:46the field, let him not go back and take his coat.
- 41:48And woe to them that are with child and give
- 41:50suck in those days. Then if any man shall say
- 41:53to you, lo, here is Christ or there, do not
- 41:56believe him. For as lightning cometh out of the east,
- 41:59and of purity even into the west, so shall the
- 42:01coming of man be. By What means will this great
- 42:05destruction take place? What will be the efficient cause? The
- 42:08principal agent, the direct, imminent instrument Holy Scripture did not
- 42:12intend to omit any of the circumstances continuing this event,
- 42:16the gravest and most decisive of all that have succeeded
- 42:20one another in creation. It teaches that the world will
- 42:25not perish by inundation as in the flood, will not
- 42:28collapse by virtue an earthquake, and will not be buried
- 42:31under the ashes of lava as were the Herculaneum and
- 42:35Pompeii in the reign of Titus, but will be set
- 42:38ablaze and destroyed by fire. Such was already the ancient
- 42:42belief common to the Egyptians and the Persian philosophers. Cicero
- 42:47said that the world would end by fire. The remarkable
- 42:49thing is that present day science concurs with the sacred books,
- 42:53the showing that fire will be the great architect of
- 42:55God's justice and renovate and renovation which will follow this
- 42:59has been manifested. Thus, science, like the Bible, has revealed
- 43:03that fire was first, was the first created force to
- 43:06have been developed, the first created force to have developed
- 43:10its energy and display its activity. It was by fire
- 43:14that nature was made fruitful and the elements set to work.
- 43:18And this came also the great transformation of the primitive world,
- 43:21the erection of mountains, and making of the stars, and
- 43:23finding the emergence of the universe with all order and variety,
- 43:27which it presents to our admiring gaze. Justis one two
- 43:32says the earth was void and empty, and darkness was
- 43:35upon the face of the deep. In other words, as
- 43:37the experts and commentaries explained, the matter was volatized and
- 43:42the state of vapor. Before the Creator had bestowed its
- 43:45properties into verse forms by dividing and coordinating it. In
- 43:49the six days labor, all these constituents were jumbled, disunited,
- 43:54and in chaotic state. Earth and Sun presented a picture
- 43:57of vast the quest or gaseous sea scattered around the
- 44:02immense of space. The sea was motionless and inert. It
- 44:06bubbled on its surface and in its innermote depths, and
- 44:11was set in motion under the quickening breath of an external,
- 44:14all powerful agent, which was none other than the Spirit
- 44:17of God. Let's see, the Holy Spirit subjected the material
- 44:21substance to sort of incubation under the action, and by
- 44:25the effects of this sovereign heat, the immeasurable intensity of
- 44:28the elements underwent a casting and recasting, perfecting themselves, acquiring
- 44:33their power and energy shed from their dross, like gold
- 44:36which is refined and separated from its rust in the
- 44:40crucible where it's cast. When thus transformed by the blast
- 44:44of this furnace of the Holy Spirit, they were rendered
- 44:46capable of hearing the word of God. The Creator called them,
- 44:50and in turn said to them be light made. And
- 44:53light was made. And after he had made night and
- 44:56day and layout the sky. He separated the solid matter
- 44:58from the vaporous mass around, and said, let the dry
- 45:02land appear, and the land was consolidated. He spoke also
- 45:05the waters leaving on our globe out of the liquid part,
- 45:08only what was necessary to irrigate and fill the vapors
- 45:10of the seas, fill the basins of the seas, and
- 45:14sent away the remainder in the state of vapor or ether.
- 45:17To feel the vast expanses of all the spheres of
- 45:20the sky. And let's see it was a grand, sublime
- 45:25scene which would give rise to long, magnificent developments. Who
- 45:30would not fill his spirits rise and his heart quiver
- 45:33at the sight of the creative act, that masterpiece of
- 45:36divine wisdom and power, throwing up streams of light and
- 45:39beauty from the shapeless shadow ocean, implanting movement and action
- 45:45in all the inert beings with the divine spirit he
- 45:48had divested had invested with his character, penetrating with him
- 45:53with his Let's try that again, which the divine spirit
- 45:57had invested with his character, penetrate them with his fire
- 46:01and radiance. Now today, however, we cannot speak of these
- 46:06admiral works, except in passing and insofar as they bear
- 46:09upon our chosen subject. Now, this same spirit of God,
- 46:12who has strown treasures of harmony and perfection throughout the universe,
- 46:16will proceed the same way when it comes to ordaining
- 46:19new heavens and buildings, that places, and building that palace
- 46:25which shall serve eternally as a dwelling place for glorified man.
- 46:29Here we are not indulging imagination, and our voice is
- 46:33not our own, but that of the prophets who have spoken,
- 46:35and of all the evangelists who have written. A fire
- 46:38should go out before him and shall burn his enemies
- 46:40round about the mountains, melted like wax at the presence
- 46:44of the Lord. Under the effect of its brilliance, the
- 46:47sun will darken, and the moon will no longer give
- 46:49its light, and the stars will fall. That is, having
- 46:52been dissolved for the second time, they will vanish like
- 46:55drop its into the air. That fire will be the
- 46:58one which will devour or the wicked like straw penetrates,
- 47:02penetrate their bones the marrow, and consume them forever. It
- 47:07will be the final trial for the just who will
- 47:10be living in the last days. For them it will
- 47:12take place of purgatory, the cleansing flames of which, at
- 47:15the moment of their resurrection will be extinguished, never to
- 47:18be lit up again. It will be the crucible, wherein
- 47:21they will cast off the remains of their earthly rusts,
- 47:25so that no stain may darken the whiteness of their garments.
- 47:27When they appear before the throne of God. We may
- 47:30be quite uncertain that all these events will be accomplished.
- 47:33They are certain with absolute certainty, certaintude, as God is
- 47:38himself as his spirit of truth, which is not subject
- 47:41to any error or change. As a matter of fact,
- 47:44we can state that every one of us here will
- 47:47have left this lower world before being witnessed to this
- 47:50great scene of desolation and ruin. Nonetheless, Jesus Christ has
- 47:54judged it fitting that we should be instructed concerning it,
- 47:57because these great truths are not of a speculator of order,
- 48:00but are intended to bring about practical and immediate effects
- 48:04in the conduct of our lives. In truth, if the
- 48:07earth and all it contains must one day disappear by fire,
- 48:10the goods of this world are no more to be
- 48:12esteemed than wood and straw. What point is there then,
- 48:15in making them the object of our desires and cares,
- 48:18why seek to build and lead marks of our genius
- 48:20and power when we have no permanent abode, and where
- 48:23the form of this world will be removed like a
- 48:25tent which has no travelers or shelter. It may be
- 48:29said that it would be one thousand years before this
- 48:31frightening catechism takes place. But Christ is said that a
- 48:35thousand years or but an instant compared with eternity. And
- 48:38when the moment comes, when from the land of the
- 48:41future life we are the witnesses and actors in that
- 48:44supreme drama, the whole span of humanity will seem so
- 48:47short to us that we were scarcely considered to have
- 48:50lasted a single day. The great prophet Saint Paul, from
- 48:53whom time had no bounds in space no size, believed
- 48:56that he had already been transported. There in his cave Bethlehem,
- 49:00Saint Jerome could hear the trumpet of doom awakening the dead,
- 49:04and his hair stood on end out of fear, and
- 49:07his flash and bones quivered with an indescribable shudder. Lastly,
- 49:11Christ tells us that to meditate upon these great teachings,
- 49:15for it is certain that we should be taken by surprise,
- 49:18and that time will come sooner than we think. At
- 49:21the end of the fourteenth century, an extraordinary personage appeared
- 49:25from the depths of Spain. His name was Vincent Ferrer
- 49:28fr Er I believe it's pronunced Forrer, a prophet, was
- 49:33a prophet and a wonder worker. Since his youth he
- 49:35grew amidst universal astonishment. The spirit of God lay upon him,
- 49:40took possession of his heart, and inflamed him with a
- 49:42zeal unknown since Saint Paul. It ruled his body, which
- 49:46he sustained despite his extreme weakness, weakness amidst the most
- 49:50crushing labors and the harshest austerities. The power to work
- 49:54miracles was granted to him. In short, he uttered the
- 49:56most prodigiously powerful words that mankind had ever heard since
- 50:01Saint Paul. A superhuman being. Although he was a man,
- 50:05he constantly refused the honors which the popes urged him
- 50:09to accept. His life was one of continuous prayer, fasting,
- 50:11and preaching. For twenty years, he traveled throughout Europe, and
- 50:15for twenty years Europe trembled beneath the ardor and fire
- 50:18of his inspired voice. The Last Judgment was the favorite
- 50:22subject of his preaching. He himself declared to all that
- 50:25he had been specially sent by the Sovereign Judge to
- 50:28proclaim the approach to the last days. One day at
- 50:31Salamanca Sa La m A n Ci, a city renowned
- 50:37for its theologians and scholars, a countless throng crowded around
- 50:40to hear him. The Messenger from Heaven, suddenly, raising his
- 50:44voice in the midst of the multitu, said, I am
- 50:46the Angel of the Apocalypse, whom Saint John saw flying
- 50:49through the midst of heaven, crying aloud. Ye, nations, fear
- 50:52of the Lord and render him glory, for the day
- 50:55of Judgment is near. At these strange words, an indescribable
- 50:59murmi broke out among the assembly. There were shouts of manda,
- 51:02spragging in piety. The Messenger of God pause, gazing the
- 51:06sky in a kind of rapture or ecstasy. Then he continued,
- 51:10raising his voice, cried out again, I am the Angel
- 51:12of the Apocalypse, the Angel Judgment. The agitation of murmuring
- 51:17reached its height. Calm yourself, said the saint. Do not
- 51:20take scandal at my words, you will see with your
- 51:22own eyes that I am what I say. Go to
- 51:25the gate of Saint Paul at the end of the city,
- 51:27and you will find a dead woman. Bring her to me,
- 51:29and I shall raise her to life as proof of
- 51:31what Saint John said of me. Once more shouts and
- 51:35an even greater protest greeted this proposal. Nevertheless, a few
- 51:39men decided to go to the gate indicated. There they
- 51:41did indeed find a dead woman, took her and laid
- 51:45her in the midst of the assembly. The apostle, who
- 51:47did not for a moment leave the elevated spot from
- 51:50which was preaching, said woman, in the name of God,
- 51:52I command you rise. The dead woman immediately rose, wrapping
- 51:56her shroud, cast off the winding sheet that covered her face,
- 52:00showing herself full of life in the midst of the assembly.
- 52:03Vincent then added, for the honor of God and for
- 52:05the salvation of all these people. Say now that you
- 52:08can speak, whether I am really the Angel of the Apocalypse,
- 52:11entrusted with the proclaiming to all the approach of the
- 52:14last judgment. You are, the angel, replied the woman. Truly
- 52:17you are. In order to place this marvelous testimony between
- 52:21two miracles. The saints spoke to her again, do you
- 52:24prefer to remain alive or do you wish to die
- 52:26once more? She said, I should willingly live live. Then
- 52:30in fact she lived for many years longer a living witness,
- 52:34says one historian, of astounding prodigy and of the highest
- 52:38mission ever in trusted to mand we should not discuss
- 52:41the authenticity of the story. It has raised doubts some
- 52:44uncertain hay geographers, and the circumstances surrounding it have been
- 52:49given have given rise to criticism and debate. In defense
- 52:53of our opinion, it is sufficient to state that the
- 52:55Church has not pronounced apothecal since in the Bull of
- 52:59Caizations Saint it is said he had the words of
- 53:02the Eternal Gospel to proclaim, as an angel flying through
- 53:06the midst of heaven the Kingdom of God to every tongue,
- 53:09tribe and nation, and to show the proximity of the
- 53:11Last Judgment. However, is nearly five hundred years since this
- 53:15event happened, and the last judgment has been The last
- 53:18judgment announced by this wonder worker of the fourteenth century
- 53:21has not taken place. Are we to conclude that the
- 53:24Saint was misled, and the miracle of this resurrection, attested
- 53:31by serious, trustworthy witnesses, recalled and handed down in sculpture
- 53:35and painting, must be assigned to the realm of legend,
- 53:37and to be held in allegory or mere invention. Saint
- 53:40Vincus Fereer spoke in the same way as the holy
- 53:43doctors had done before him, and as a majority of
- 53:46great Apostolic men have done after him. Thus, as a
- 53:50matter of fact, Saint Jerome censured a certain Judah, the
- 53:53infamus of the famous author of the Ecclesiastical History, for
- 53:57having asserted that the violence of the persecution and pretended
- 54:00at the end of the world, which would occur in
- 54:02a short time. Yet the same Jerome, in one of
- 54:05his letters, brilliantly depicted the calamities and disasters which he
- 54:09had witnessed himself, expressed almost the same opinion. Saint Cyprian
- 54:13wrote these words, you must be convinced and hold for
- 54:15certain that the day of the final desolation has begun
- 54:19to dawn upon you, and at the time of the
- 54:21Antichrist is near. Excuse me. In the penegyric of his
- 54:28brother Satires, Saint Ambrose exclaimed he was removed from life
- 54:32that he might not be a witness to the end
- 54:34of this world and the complete desolation of the universe.
- 54:37Saint Gregory the Great and Saint Bernard have expressed the
- 54:40same sentiments in their books and discourses. These illustrious doctors
- 54:44and great saints spoke in this way either because they
- 54:46saw faith becoming scarce and the calamities of the age
- 54:49increasing every day in alarming proportions, or because they were
- 54:54gripped by fear at the thought of that great day
- 54:57and wanted to plant that salutary fear in men who
- 54:59had gone astray, in order to bring them back to
- 55:02the knowledge of God and good living. Yet we cannot
- 55:04say that they strayed from which, by emphasizing no, we
- 55:09cannot say these straight from truth. They spoke in accordance
- 55:12with scriptures, which, by emphasizing this fundamental truth, unceasingly shows
- 55:17the prospect of the advent of divine judgment imminent. In
- 55:21this the Apostles inspired writers have not deceived us. Inasmuch
- 55:25as time is nothing to those who have crossed over
- 55:28the frontiers of earthly life. The whole span of the
- 55:31centuries says the Holy Spirit is no more than a
- 55:33fleeting day, just as in the firmament there are stars
- 55:37separated by myriads of miles, which, on account of their distance,
- 55:41appear to emerge so as to form one single point
- 55:44when observed on this earth. In the same way, from
- 55:47the heights of the Life of God, where we show
- 55:50one day be immersed, time will be such as if
- 55:53it did not exist a year, one hundred thousand years,
- 55:56a million years. Contemplating for the bosom of eternity not
- 56:00seem to us any more than mere points. We shall
- 56:03consider these links of time so microscopic, so fractual, that
- 56:08in a sense, there will not be any difference between
- 56:11them which our mind can discern. Consequently, these words of
- 56:14Saint John the Evangelists may, with perfect truthfulness be applied
- 56:18to the general resurrection as well as to the partial
- 56:21resurrection performed by Jesus Christ. Amen and men, I say
- 56:24to you, unto you, that hour cometh, and now is
- 56:29when the dead show hear the voice of the Son
- 56:31of God. Moreover, our eternal destiny will be settled irrevocably
- 56:36at death, and a particular judgment which must follow will
- 56:40soon determine the circumstances in which we show appear at
- 56:44the triumbunal of the divine justice, when the place which
- 56:47will there be and the place which will there be
- 56:50assigned to us. Compared with this inavertible ending of human destinies,
- 56:55our political controversies are nothing but idle noise. Well, that's true.
- 57:00Revolutions which cause the disappearance of peoples and bring down
- 57:03republics and empires are less than the change of a
- 57:06scene or decoration in the theater. All these colossal enterprises
- 57:10and marvelous works to which men devote their minds, and
- 57:13which they bring to perfection at the cost of the
- 57:15greatest sacrifices and most hazardous efforts, appear like a mere
- 57:20wisp of smoke, and are more fragile works than the
- 57:23webs spun by a spider, and most often lasts less
- 57:26than a day. There will then be no other distinction
- 57:30between men that are of merit and virtue than of
- 57:33merit of virtue. There will then be no distinction between
- 57:36men than of merit and virtue. All vain and ambitious
- 57:39thoughts will have vanished, politics will have seed, science itself
- 57:43will be destroyed. Happy those who have heard the divine
- 57:47word and kept it faithfully in their hearts. Happy those who,
- 57:50awakening from their sleep, shall have walked honestly and openly
- 57:53following the apostles recommendation. Happy those who, like the wise versions,
- 57:58shall have carefully conserved the oil of their lamp and
- 58:01form their sheep for the day of the dazzling solemn harvest.
- 58:06These shall be called the Predestinate, because the Saint John
- 58:09says their names are written in the Book of Life
- 58:11of the Lamb who was slain from the beginning of
- 58:14the world. May that destiny be ours, amen, And that
- 58:20ends that long passage. So I think it's really very
- 58:25good that Father Armagnon is giving us an encouragement fortify
- 58:32our courage a little bit here before we get into
- 58:37the warnings and then and the horrors of armageddon and
- 58:40all that talking about the Antichrist and all that's going
- 58:44to befall the world and the people. You know, when
- 58:46that time comes, Jesus said, those who endure in to
- 58:50the end will be saved. And our end can come
- 58:53at any moment, So we should take every warning about
- 58:56the end times personally, very very personally. See y'all have
- 59:01a great week, and I'll tade next time.
