- 0:00You're listening to me Forever Cool podcast.
- 0:01My name is Rex 45 and we are continuing in this Series A trip
- 0:07down memory lane as we discussed the 2003 Moto GP season here on
- 0:14the Be Forever Cool podcast. Last episode was really
- 0:19interesting and a lot of fun to to listen to, so make sure you
- 0:23check it out. As I continue to do this, let's
- 0:26bring in our first guess. But more than a guess, TJ.
- 0:32Man, what's going on? Welcome to the show.
- 0:35How you doing Rexy Chilling? I, you know, you know, I'm, I'm,
- 0:39I'm waking up, man. I, I think I should have.
- 0:41I turned on my cappuccino making machine and I didn't make one.
- 0:44And I, you know, in hindsight, I probably.
- 0:47Forgot about it. Should have made one.
- 0:50We didn't talk too much last week about the Patriots they
- 0:54took. AL was good, man.
- 0:55It's cold up in the Bean was good.
- 0:58Yeah, we got some snow on the ground pretty much most of the
- 1:01East Coast anyway, but it's pretty cold up here.
- 1:05And I think my, my Patriots had a bye week last week.
- 1:08But you know, going into this week, we couldn't hold it up.
- 1:11But it was a good game. But we're still, we're still in
- 1:14the playoff hunt. We're still looking good.
- 1:18Yeah, You know. It's not good because for some
- 1:21reason my daughter is a Bills fan and you know, when, when,
- 1:24when they were on the Patriots up 21 something, I was, I talked
- 1:28a little bit of smack then, you know. 27.
- 1:32After it was over, you know, she's like, you know, I told you
- 1:35so kind of thing. But it's all good, you know, I,
- 1:37I like sports, but yeah. Go ahead.
- 1:41I was going to say, ready to talk about this 2003 season.
- 1:45You know, I was just thinking about going down memory lane,
- 1:48like he was saying, I was back in high school, so it's cool to
- 1:52see where I was at and watching this, seeing like PlayStation
- 1:55Two and all the good stuff on it.
- 1:59It's an advertisement, so it's pretty interesting.
- 2:02I mean, you know I would, TJ, I wasn't going to look at it like
- 2:04that, but now you got me thinking.
- 2:05Around, I mean, I have to look at it that way, you know,
- 2:08because some history. Man, listen, Lewis, man, I don't
- 2:17know what this guy is talking about.
- 2:18High school? What's good?
- 2:20Lewis? Man, how?
- 2:20Man, I was working full time at that time.
- 2:23I was already out of college. You had grown folks problems.
- 2:27I am man, I was working about mortgages and reverse mortgage.
- 2:33You know, all that fun stuff, man.
- 2:36I'm excited to talk about the 2002 season season as well
- 2:39because I've learned a lot more by watching it.
- 2:42But how things with you, man? Where you are in the world, man?
- 2:46Right now I'm in California. I've been traveling for like the
- 2:48last week, you know, living the living the glamorous life of
- 2:52somebody in the motorcycle industry, sleeping in odd hotels
- 2:56throughout the US and the world. So what what what's What's your
- 3:01worst hotel experience, if you can say?
- 3:05Washington, DC man. That's it.
- 3:09I kid I I right at the top of the list.
- 3:12So usually when I go to a city that I haven't traveled to, I
- 3:16get a hotel for one night. Just in case the hotel's not
- 3:20good, I'll find another hotel the second night.
- 3:23And I got a hotel at this one place.
- 3:28It had decent reviews, like 3 out of four stars.
- 3:31I think they paid a lot of people to get it that high.
- 3:34It should have been -3 1/2 stars.
- 3:39Yeah, it was, it was a, it was a, it was a really bad hotel.
- 3:42I actually ended up going and to another hotel and renting
- 3:47another room at another hotel and just lost the money on that
- 3:49hotel. Yeah.
- 3:50Yeah, so Washington, DC, man, worst hotel that I could stay
- 3:53at. I, I will say I I had one in
- 3:55Jersey, but I think any hotel that that's under construction
- 4:00is a red flag. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 4:04That's usually not a good thing. Jersey is probably in the top
- 4:08five for my worst hotels. There's one particular hotel
- 4:11anybody that's ever been to New Jersey Motorsports Park.
- 4:14We're probably talking about the same one.
- 4:16It's it's the lack of quality Inn and right next to it is the
- 4:20roadway Inn. Either one of those two is a
- 4:23great place to get bed bugs and possibly involved be involved in
- 4:27a failed drug transaction that ends up in a shootout.
- 4:35Come on man, get in a motorcycle industry people, you're going to
- 4:38love it. Nothing but glamour.
- 4:44Speaking about glamour, you know, the 2003 season, man, it,
- 4:52it, it's the second year for the 1000 CC Rossi has won his second
- 4:58championship in a row and, and they starting this thing off.
- 5:02And the cool thing is if you, if you are watching it, you know,
- 5:06the commentated commentators are back for 2003 and, and that's a
- 5:11good thing. But, you know, watching it and I
- 5:15I want to talk about the first round and the second round
- 5:18because I watched the first round and, you know, and I'm and
- 5:22I'm listening to the race and, and, you know, the one of the
- 5:24commentators like, you know, so and so is getting Med lifted to
- 5:27the hospital and they go on with the race, right.
- 5:31And I'm just like, OK. And then the next race, you
- 5:34know, set, set to set to juvenile wins the race and and
- 5:40they like they win it for his former teammate, who passed away
- 5:43five days ago. I'm like, the dude didn't
- 5:45survive, you know, it's like, you know, back then it's a lot
- 5:51different than when we we see accidents now on Moto GP and how
- 5:55they deliver the message. I mean, obviously social media
- 5:58is different a lot faster today than that.
- 6:01But I don't know if you notice, you got, if you guys noticed
- 6:03that just you know how that was delivered.
- 6:08Also, just the craziness of the the Japanese Grand Prix and, you
- 6:13know, riders that teammates that come and, and, you know, do the
- 6:17right thing for somebody who's fallen and, and, and winning a
- 6:20race because he hasn't he didn't win a lot of races after that.
- 6:24We'll start with you, TJ. Yeah, man, what was that first
- 6:28race? Was that Suzuka, I believe?
- 6:30What was that? But that, yeah, that was just a
- 6:37crazy, crazy race, man. I mean, there's a lot of
- 6:39accidents. And yeah, like you said, the
- 6:41race kept going and just thought I was talking about our the the
- 6:46last season until 2022, I think the last race in Valencia, like
- 6:52someone got into an accident and everyone's just riding by them.
- 6:54Stuff like, you know, seemed like the same thing continued
- 6:58the following year about safety. But yeah, that's just this is
- 7:04not good at all. But it's just the way that they
- 7:07celebrated afterwards is pretty neat.
- 7:11You know, just to keep the, you know, the the spirits high and
- 7:15stuff like that. But but man, yeah, it's this for
- 7:18the just the way the season started.
- 7:20It's just it's these guys really risk a lot.
- 7:25And I mean, I don't know about like how the runoff and stuff
- 7:29was. But yeah, as far as like just
- 7:32the power ratio with the bike and everything it is, they did
- 7:35risk a lot. There's a lot of trial and
- 7:38error. I say a lot of accidents,
- 7:40especially was in the back of the pack.
- 7:43Right. Yeah, No, I I agree.
- 7:45What are your thoughts, Louis, on that?
- 7:47I mean, you know, TJ was in high school.
- 7:50I know you were watching it or might have been there.
- 7:52So. Hey guys, why I was taking my
- 7:56arthritis medication as I was watching it.
- 8:01Well, and the and the last show we talked about why eventually
- 8:04Suzuka was removed from the GP calendar because it is a meat
- 8:08grinder of a track. I mean it never had the
- 8:11appropriate amount of runoff. It didn't have the greatest
- 8:14layout. You know, we used to joke back
- 8:17in the days that whenever we saw a race at Suzuka, it was like we
- 8:21they were, they looked like they were racing in the hallways of a
- 8:24high school because it was just all walls everywhere.
- 8:28You know it even to this day, it's still considered one of the
- 8:31most dangerous tracks that you can race on.
- 8:35And obviously, you know, as crazy and as as exciting that
- 8:38kind of makes the sport, it's also like you got to remember
- 8:41these guys are risking a lot already.
- 8:45And the FIM and Dorna and all the protection.
- 8:48They have to really take these things into account when they
- 8:52certify a track to be a Moto GP track or for motorcycle racing
- 8:56in general. Because you have to understand
- 8:57the speeds and the dynamics and when you crash where you might
- 9:00end up, where you're most likely to end up.
- 9:03And there's always the chance that you're going to end up
- 9:04somewhere where nobody would ever think you're going to end
- 9:07up, but you could end up there. So you have to always think
- 9:10about these things. But yeah, it's it's it was very
- 9:13casual the way that they kind of just mentioned he won the race
- 9:19because, you know, on behalf of his former partner, former he
- 9:25not racing anymore. Oh, no, he did.
- 9:27Damn. Like, like there was no A
- 9:32tribute before the broadcast. There was no not there was no he
- 9:37did. All right.
- 9:38Next week, we'll see you again. Well, I mean, the race didn't
- 9:41stop, right? And I don't know and we don't
- 9:44know if, and I was thinking about this, I'm like, did he die
- 9:47at the track and they just said they Med lift him or did they
- 9:50Med lift him and he died at the hospital, right?
- 9:52Because you don't. The race didn't stop.
- 9:56I mean, the way that it kind of looked, they should have just
- 9:59made a hole in that corner and just dropped his body in there
- 10:01because that's how they treated it.
- 10:03Like you know, nothing to see here, nothing to see here.
- 10:06Yeah, and everyone jump around, but it was like 1 race I watched
- 10:10and I think it was Marco Melandry that crashed.
- 10:14I, I, he might have been in Bruno and he crashed in one
- 10:17corner, but the bike slid across into the other, into the other
- 10:20corner. And he's like standing next to
- 10:22the bike while people are passing him.
- 10:24He's like not even trying to get out the way.
- 10:26Breaking the number one rule of track day.
- 10:28Get out of the impact zone. This is like, yeah, I.
- 10:32Saw that at Donington Park too. Really good, the same thing it.
- 10:36Might have it, might have it. Might have been.
- 10:38Donald yeah, it might have been Donaldson Park that he did it.
- 10:40It was it was it was one of those one of these tracks with
- 10:43the chicane fell into the other turn.
- 10:45So but but pretty wild. I mean, what do you what do you
- 10:48guys thought on on the Cavalier Ness off the riders right.
- 10:56Start with you, TJ. He said, What do I think about
- 11:00the the what? The how?
- 11:01How, how the riders and how you know how cavalier they were, How
- 11:05you know, fearless or not conscious that you know they can
- 11:08be taken out by another bike. Oh yeah, that's what I'm saying.
- 11:12Like. Conscious because they just they
- 11:14just assumed that other riders are just going to dodge them I
- 11:16guess. I don't know.
- 11:18It was more of like a. It's just like a, I don't know,
- 11:22like it's, it's just how Lewis was saying it's like, oh, you
- 11:26didn't see nothing. You didn't see nothing.
- 11:28So they had, their mindset was just like, they know what it
- 11:30could be. It was like, like you said, the
- 11:33meat grinder, you know, it's like, you know, they, you know,
- 11:38you're in a level of, of a group of riders.
- 11:40So like, if you want to compete with them, you got to roll with
- 11:44it, you know, So at that time there it was just if you wanted
- 11:47to be a friend, you got to risk a lot and a lot happened.
- 11:50But yeah, this, the fact that you want to throw your leg over
- 11:552 whales, I mean, I mean, I see this, it's so addictive.
- 11:58You know, it's like, you know, who are, who doesn't want to go
- 12:01race until I mean, I understand they, they reverse a lot.
- 12:05And I, I, I gave it to them because they can now give us a
- 12:09lot more information to this day of what to say, you know?
- 12:14Yeah, no, it's pretty wild to see what your thoughts, Lewis.
- 12:19It was just a different era, you know, like it's just, if you
- 12:22really think about it, we're just coming out of the 90s and
- 12:25it's just a different era, different way of looking things.
- 12:27There still is no social media. Nobody had smartphones.
- 12:33It was just a completely different mindset than today.
- 12:36You know, today something happens, it goes viral,
- 12:39everybody gets to see it. It gets reposted, everybody gets
- 12:42to post their comments. Back then, you only got your
- 12:44information. Especially for Moto GP in the
- 12:47US, you only got it during the broadcast.
- 12:50It wasn't like ESPN was talking about it afterwards or ESPN was
- 12:53talking about it beforehand. They weren't on Around the horn.
- 12:57You know, it wasn't on any of these shows that were on ESPN.
- 13:00It was just like, if you're lucky, maybe ESPN did a 30
- 13:05second thing where it's like, oh, today at the Suzuka race,
- 13:08Ryder Deja Rocato was involved in an accident and a 14 passed
- 13:12away from his incident. You know, they I don't even
- 13:14think back then we even said thoughts and prayers.
- 13:16It was like, you know, he's out, That's it, move on to next
- 13:19story. The Yankees beat the Boston Red
- 13:22Sox, you know, 7:00 to 2:00 today.
- 13:23And like that was kind of it's glazed over today because it's a
- 13:27more global sport, it's bigger and more than anything just the
- 13:31interconnectivity that fans have through social media and
- 13:33different platforms. Something like that would not go
- 13:36by. I would say that was the first
- 13:39time a death became a really big event in modern Moto GP was the
- 13:46loss of Simocelli. Simocelli happened in the day
- 13:52and age of, of social media and of easier ability to, to share
- 13:57content and share information with other fans or people of
- 14:01like minded ideas. But before that, I mean, you
- 14:05know, like I said in the last race, I mean, it was a meat
- 14:07grinder. If you could get through a
- 14:09season without losing a couple of rounds with, you know,
- 14:13without a broken hand or broken collarbone, dislocated this
- 14:17separated shoulder, you were already on your path to ending
- 14:21up in the top ten in the championship just because you
- 14:24aren't going to miss any rounds. Right, right, right.
- 14:27I will say it sounds like 2003 was the first year that the
- 14:31riders got together or some of the riders got together to kind
- 14:35of deal with doing A, to have some kind of rules in place.
- 14:40As far as even, you know, you know, listening to the
- 14:42commentators, they say, you know, Rossi was deemed the guy
- 14:46to say, when we stop races, if, when it starts to rain too much
- 14:49kind of thing. And you know, the first, the
- 14:52rider in the 1st place gets to say, Hey, it's unsafe to, to, to
- 14:55continue and stuff like that. So, you know, to where is today?
- 14:59Those those are the beginning stages where it's just kind of,
- 15:02you know, you know, I wanna say kicking, kicking rocks, but just
- 15:04kicking around ideas and saying, Hey, we got to do something
- 15:07about this to make it a little bit safer.
- 15:10Well, it's, it's getting there now, even with the rain races.
- 15:13Now, if enough riders put their hand up during a race, then the
- 15:18FIM will take account and Dorner will stop the race.
- 15:21The Moto GP will stop the race if enough riders raise their
- 15:24hand and like, you know, hey, it's too dangerous.
- 15:26It's too in the event that Dorner themselves doesn't red
- 15:29flag the race, the racers have the ability to vote by just
- 15:32raising their hands and saying, you know, it's getting too
- 15:35dangerous out here. Back then, if you if the race
- 15:38started, you finished it. Rain, shine, you know, frogs
- 15:43falling from heaven, locust infestation, doesn't matter.
- 15:46Either you all end up in the hospital or you finish the race.
- 15:49But we're we're going to broadcast this thing until the
- 15:52checkered flag comes down. That's the way it felt like.
- 15:54Right, right. Oh, no doubt, no doubt.
- 15:58So I let's, you know, as we dive further into it, I have to point
- 16:02out that they were not a lot of Spaniards in Moto GP in 2003.
- 16:07Two to be exact. We had I believe 3 Italians.
- 16:11We had eight Japanese and four Americans.
- 16:14Two Americans are both rookie Nikki Hayden and Colin Edwards.
- 16:17Nikki Hayden won AMA championship the previous year
- 16:22and Colin Edwards won the Super Bike Championship the previous
- 16:25year. Coming into, you know, Moto GPI
- 16:29mean, you know, will we see anything like that?
- 16:34We do have one Japanese still in Moto GPI.
- 16:36Don't know if we'll see 3 or 4 again.
- 16:39I mean, there's no Americans in Moto GP right now.
- 16:42We see a lot of Italians. And thanks to Rossi, if if he
- 16:46didn't, if his crew wasn't there, it'll be like all
- 16:49Spaniards. You think the Spaniards were
- 16:51upset in 2003, TJ? I mean, yeah, I think so.
- 16:58They was, you see now they're just trying to find, they got
- 17:01all these programs for these young kids now.
- 17:04Yeah, they made they made sure they would make a difference.
- 17:08But I don't think we'll see that many Japanese riders in the
- 17:14competition is just too close now.
- 17:16So these, they got to be on a different level.
- 17:20Like, like we're we're saying that Ryder's been getting lapped
- 17:24back then. So like, you know, it was just
- 17:29this competition's too close. I don't think we'll see.
- 17:31Not to say that they're slow, but, you know, it's just the
- 17:35competition's too close. It's kind of like you got to
- 17:37make the team now, yeah. Yeah, no, I, I, I, I got to say
- 17:41yeah, Competition, the tech, I mean, it's, it's different,
- 17:45Lewis. I mean, I, you know, he's seen
- 17:48highlights on on Rossi and you know, the I don't want to say
- 17:52the highlights are spun in his favor because he he put in the
- 17:55work, but set the juvenile. Yeah, give more.
- 17:58I, I have a lot more respect for him now watching this again.
- 18:02I mean, I know I watched it a long time ago, but I just it was
- 18:04glossed over it back then. And because he was a lone man
- 18:08fighting for for everything for a while.
- 18:10I mean, you know, Checker was there, but it was really, you
- 18:14know, him and and you know, he took a lot of, you know, it's
- 18:17almost like Alan Iverson standing over Tyloo, you know
- 18:21what I'm saying? After the after the shot, you
- 18:24know what I mean? It's like he he took a lot of
- 18:25heat for not being able to dethrone Rossi.
- 18:30Yeah, he took a lot of heat, but Rossi was pretty much on the
- 18:34podium every single round, you know, and said they driven out.
- 18:38You know, he was kind of, he was in the top 4 for most of the
- 18:43rounds. He had a Cup.
- 18:44He had one retirement. He had one race where he didn't
- 18:47even finish in the top five. So he was the closest one.
- 18:50But at the end of the day, he also lost by 80 points.
- 18:54So that's, you know, almost four race wins, different points.
- 19:01You know, Rossi finished first, second or third in in every
- 19:04single round and even when he fell back as far as seventh or
- 19:07something like that, in that day and age, you can make up a eight
- 19:11second difference with pure talent and just out riding
- 19:14people. It's not like today when you
- 19:16fall back, you know, 5 seconds, that's it, you're done.
- 19:19There's no way you're going to catch up to the guys in the
- 19:21front because you're you're fighting for tents.
- 19:23I mean, Mark Marquez did it earlier this year a couple of
- 19:26times and seeing and, and you know, obviously Rossi did it
- 19:29first, but watching Rossi do it, it's just like, oh wow, who, who
- 19:34else did I see do that? And in current time, right.
- 19:38And it's just like, not a lot of people, but one dude stood out.
- 19:41Cream, the cream always rises to the top in every generation.
- 19:45You know like the the guys that have the ability to win will
- 19:48always rise to the top. But when you've seen like
- 19:51Marquez run off the track, he might finish in 3rd or 4th, but
- 19:56to go all the way back to win, to go back to win in this day
- 20:00and age after running off track, like a significant run off
- 20:03track, not just running wide, but running off track, it's
- 20:06really, really hard. Again, we talked about it the
- 20:08the aero devices 'cause it it make it very difficult to pass
- 20:13because they they cause buffering.
- 20:15When you're behind people like you have to do these dives,
- 20:17these lunges. You have to have a little bit
- 20:20extra and even with that little bit extra, you can only ride 3/4
- 20:23of a second or a second faster lap than everybody else for so
- 20:27many laps before your tires disintegrate and now you suffer
- 20:30some other stuff. So it's almost like back then
- 20:33guys would ride the, the, the like they would say they would,
- 20:36they would ride the the tires to their, to their threads and be
- 20:41able to win. Yeah.
- 20:42Yeah, yeah, You know, it was, it was nice to see them slide side
- 20:47with, you know, lighten up that rear tire, but. 2003 was a great
- 20:52year for Sethi Jibenow and 2004 started as a great year.
- 20:57Maybe we'll discuss 2004, but 2004 was the year where the
- 21:01Rossi curse on SETI Jibenow came in and never never won another
- 21:06race again. Never did any significant riding
- 21:09impact for riding. Like you know Rossi pretty much
- 21:12made it his lifes mission to make sure.
- 21:14That said, they given now never sees a podium again.
- 21:16Right, well, I would say it's not just, you know, Sette, it's
- 21:20also Max Biage. I mean, I could see why the man
- 21:25don't smile when he's at, in the paddock to this day.
- 21:30This was like because he's he, he, he's the, you know, the
- 21:33divisioso of our time or my time as far as watching the sport or
- 21:37when I got into it where, you know, you, you, you're second to
- 21:40Marquez, second to Marquez. You know, Max was second to, to
- 21:45Rossi in the 500CC the first year, I believe the second year
- 21:48as well, when, when he won the, the, the, the second title.
- 21:53And, you know, and these guys, I mean, they're giving it all they
- 21:57got. Yep.
- 21:59You know, they're not leaving anything on the table.
- 22:01So it's pretty impressive. TJ, what are your thoughts on,
- 22:04you know, the rounds and, and seeing, you know, Biagio
- 22:08Caparossi, we talk about Hayden because Hayden was pretty
- 22:11impressive what he did as a rookie, you know, coming in as a
- 22:15rookie and, and being signed to the factory Honda as a rookie
- 22:19that, you know, Marquez has done that, Pedrosa has done that.
- 22:23You know, Acosta didn't do that, Aldiguez didn't do that.
- 22:28All these young ride and all these young riders have done
- 22:30that since Marquez. I mean, yeah, it's pretty
- 22:35impressive to like, you know, see Rossi like, you know, put up
- 22:40the fight and how, you know, it wasn't so easy, even though it
- 22:45was kind of like a little easy for him and just see just the
- 22:48the riders that gave him a challenge.
- 22:51So like to see Biaggi up there and give him challenges and
- 22:57capacity, you know, I'm saying his name right.
- 23:02And, and set a, you know, it was just really cool to see like how
- 23:06hard they were trying just to, you know, get that championship.
- 23:09And yeah, it's just crazy to see, like how, you know, Lewis
- 23:17was saying you got to have the talent and you can make up a lot
- 23:21of time. And just watching Rossi, like we
- 23:24was talking about how you went through gravel and just just
- 23:28weave his way through the pack. You know, it wasn't always
- 23:30pieces of cream every start for him.
- 23:33Sometimes he was down in the the middle of the pack, which is
- 23:36probably the worst place to be. And he found his way out.
- 23:40And then he played very smart game and kind of let them wear
- 23:46themselves out, you know, so I guess make this seem like they
- 23:50they had the chance to win and, you know, play the smart game
- 23:53and let them make a mistake. And he always found his way
- 23:56through. But just, yeah, just watching
- 23:59those guys was pretty cool. And especially Mickey Hayden, I
- 24:02guess he's always top ten. They didn't really show much on
- 24:06him but I always heard his name so it's pretty.
- 24:10Yeah, no, no doubt. And he, he towards the end of
- 24:13the season, he did finish. I was strong, Lewis, man.
- 24:16What are your thoughts on, you know, Rossi, Hayden, what he was
- 24:21able to do coming in as a rookie, being Rossi's teammate
- 24:26and the way he handled it because he got faster as the
- 24:28season went on. He didn't he didn't, you know,
- 24:32implode. Like we see some of these young
- 24:34writers coming in, like, you know, some may say happened to
- 24:38back Nya because Marquez came on, You know, what's your
- 24:42insights on on what you know Nikki Hagan was able to do And
- 24:46and again, just, you know, the overall season.
- 24:49Well, first, I think he came into the correct manufacturer
- 24:52because this is when, you know, hot, this is at the time when
- 24:55Honda was super dominant. I mean, Honda was super dominant
- 24:58for a very long time. And even in this day, in this
- 25:012003 year, they were still the dominant team.
- 25:04They were still the dominant motorcycle.
- 25:06If you look at the top, the people in the top five for the
- 25:09top five were Hondas. The only outlier in the top five
- 25:13that was completely unforeseen was Lauris Caparasi under
- 25:17Ducati. Yeah, we'll talk about that.
- 25:20We'll talk about it later. Yeah, but Honda was was the
- 25:24dominant bike. Nikki Hayden was a Honda rider.
- 25:28You know, we spoke about it earlier, you know, from here in
- 25:30the in. Back then it was AMA Rd.
- 25:35Racing. Yeah, You know, he was a Honda
- 25:37rider when he was on a 600. He was a Honda rider when he's
- 25:40on 1000. Like, he won a championship on
- 25:44Honda. And this is also the day and age
- 25:46when a champion in the US could get rewarded by being elevated
- 25:52to Moto GP. Like there was a pathway kind of
- 25:55set between the US World Super Bike and Moto GP so US riders
- 26:00could find their way either to World Super Bike or Moto GP.
- 26:03Colin Edwards for instance, went from the US to World Super Bike,
- 26:06World Super bike to Moto GP. Nikki Hayden got lucky enough
- 26:10where he kind of skipped the World Super Bike step and went
- 26:12right to Moto GP. And again, it was because of the
- 26:15mix of them going to a four stroke type engine, which is
- 26:19more conventional engine, similar to what Nikki Hayden was
- 26:22used to riding. And the tire technology and the
- 26:26over motorcycle technology was a little bit more aligned to a
- 26:29super bike. So you could make that jump and
- 26:32not have to get used to hitting seventeen different buttons
- 26:35every lap. And, you know, all these weird
- 26:38things that happen now in Moto GP, which make the bikes a
- 26:40little bit more unique to ride. But he took great advantage of
- 26:44it. You know, he was in the top
- 26:46five. He had a couple of retirements.
- 26:48He didn't start too great. And you know, he had a couple of
- 26:51good races to start. But then as the season went on,
- 26:54I think especially being Rossi's teammate one, Rossi didn't see
- 26:58him as a threat. So Rossi probably helped him
- 27:00more than he would have helped somebody else because if you're
- 27:03not a direct threat to him, he doesn't mind helping you.
- 27:05As soon as you become a direct threat, that friendly level
- 27:10turns off because now we're in competition for money.
- 27:12We're in competition for different things.
- 27:15So I think he helped Nikki Haden get through that first year.
- 27:17You know, he had a lot of support from Honda itself.
- 27:21And it was great to see an American rider kind of like, oh
- 27:25man, we might see an American rider winning, a new American
- 27:28rider, not a Roberts or not somebody else, but like a new
- 27:30American name at the top of the pile.
- 27:33And, and it sucks. Like, I wish we still had that,
- 27:39that elevation that that sterilates a Moto GP in the USI
- 27:43wish there was some more US flags on the Moto GP calendar
- 27:48next to the racers names. I mean, you know, you said it
- 27:51earlier, I mean, it feels like 60% of the paddock at this time
- 27:55was Japanese. And for Spaniards there was only
- 27:59two full time riders. There was Spaniard, there was
- 28:01one part time rider that was Spaniard.
- 28:04So at this point, you know, Spain wasn't a big factor here.
- 28:09You, you had a ton of Japanese and you had, you know, a good
- 28:14mix of Italians. But now it's, you know, Spanish
- 28:17and Italian, 1 French guy, 1-2 Australian, One South African
- 28:24guy. Like it's not as big a mix as it
- 28:26used to be. And it's one of the things I
- 28:28think that Moto GP needs to address because it's a global
- 28:34sport and in any global sport you want to see at someone from
- 28:38your region of the world that you can support.
- 28:40You know, I, I, I like a lot of guys, but it doesn't mean I want
- 28:43to support only guys from Spain. I'd love to support an American
- 28:47rider. I don't think we'll ever see a
- 28:49Canadian rider unless he moves to Spain and becomes a Spanish
- 28:53rider. Hey, listen, you know, you know,
- 28:57as, as I found out, John Hopkins, you know, he's, he's,
- 29:01he's British because you can't rescind your citizenship even
- 29:05though he was born in the US. What is he?
- 29:07What was he again? What did they call him?
- 29:09The. Anglo-Saxon.
- 29:11Anglo. English.
- 29:13Anglo English no filter back in 2004.
- 29:17Man in 2000. 13 not, not one bit at all.
- 29:21I mean, it was, it was, it was, it was a different time.
- 29:25And you know, it, it, it was interesting because, you know,
- 29:29and we'll talk more about Ducati after this, but it's interesting
- 29:32here saying Honda 123 again. Honda 1/2.
- 29:36Three, again, it was like Honda was just giving, giving
- 29:40everybody the business And, you know, to the, you know, you
- 29:42know, we, we, we saw that, you know, Biaggi and some of these
- 29:47other writers are saying, you know, Rossi had the best Honda.
- 29:50I mean, you know, it's similar to what we're saying now about,
- 29:53you know, the difference between these Ducatis and stuff like
- 29:56that. Although we're not saying about
- 29:57KTM and Yamahas or what you know, it's the writers that feel
- 30:01that they should be #1 and they're not that are saying, you
- 30:05know, somebody else must, it must have a little bit more due
- 30:08to a sauce than than they do. Well, this is also the time that
- 30:12the the the rumor started swirling around about the fact
- 30:15that Rossi was getting those exact tires from the tire
- 30:18manufacturer. Yeah.
- 30:20So, you know, and there, you know, it has been found that
- 30:23there's some legitimacy to that because they did admit that they
- 30:27would give Rossi tires as part of the development deal with
- 30:30Honda to make the tires work better with Honda.
- 30:34But he would get them before anybody else.
- 30:37So he would have a little extra sauce in the tires that nobody
- 30:40else had because he was developing the tires.
- 30:44As he should. And it just happened to work out
- 30:47that the development tires were just slightly a little bit
- 30:49better than the non development tires.
- 30:52A little bit, but let's talk about Ducati, right?
- 30:55Because Ducati, it's their first year in Moto GP.
- 31:00They've been in World Super Bike and you know, for a brand coming
- 31:05into Moto GP, I don't think a new manufacturer is coming into
- 31:11Moto GP and had a better first season than they've had.
- 31:14What are your thoughts on Ducati?
- 31:15Only two bikes, A guy from World Super bike that's won some
- 31:19titles and Carlos not not check is it check Checker was on the
- 31:25he was yeah, he was on the other Ducati.
- 31:27What are your thoughts TJ on on how Ducati did the first year,
- 31:31getting a bike on the podium and all that fun stuff?
- 31:35Yeah, yeah, that's pretty cool to like just jump into from
- 31:40world super bike into Moto GP and and be front running.
- 31:43I mean to have two bikes is is good enough.
- 31:47I mean, still see them now, but. It was Caparossi that was on the
- 31:52that was on the Ducati, not Checa.
- 31:55Caparossi and and biaggi is it. No caparossi and and bayless.
- 32:01Bayless, sorry, but yeah, just to see, it was cool to see that
- 32:07just for them to be upfront a good portion of the season, I
- 32:12mean. Yeah, Kapparazi finished fourth
- 32:16overall. Yeah, Yeah.
- 32:18That's very good. I mean, I could just see now
- 32:21like just having that expectation and, and where
- 32:24Ducati is now. I mean, I mean, just to be
- 32:27upfront, it's you see they have all the technology right now
- 32:31pretty much. They weren't, they weren't fast
- 32:32in the rain, though, you know. And the commentators let you
- 32:35know. Let them.
- 32:36Let us. Know, yeah.
- 32:41Water in the rain. Go ahead, DJ.
- 32:44That now I was to say that rain back in the day, just definitely
- 32:47a different breed, especially on the bikes that they were on.
- 32:51But yeah, watching that flag, the flag, well, can't even call
- 32:54it a flag, the flag race. But a couple of rain races where
- 32:57it was dry in the beginning and then they had the pit to change.
- 33:01I know that was just just how raw she was in the lead.
- 33:05And that's that's just sucks because he ended up winning.
- 33:08No, I don't think he won that race.
- 33:09But yeah, it's just it's just still the rain demons.
- 33:15Like you got to find out like who's the good rain riders and
- 33:18stuff like that. So back then it's a little
- 33:20different. Oh yeah, no, for sure.
- 33:22Well, your thoughts, Lewis on Ducati and and you know, first
- 33:26year in the championship and being able to finish 4th overall
- 33:29overall, but you know, in the championship.
- 33:32It's not surprising because if you look at what the bike they
- 33:36use as the prototype baseline bike that they made the Moto GP
- 33:43bike from, if you look at World Super Bike and you look at the
- 33:47list of achievements that they did in World Super Bike, you
- 33:49know, 9490590698 2099, 2001, 2003, you know, they had been
- 33:57winning in World Super Bike year after year for many years and
- 34:00been super competitive. So really what they did is they
- 34:03took the base of a bike that they already had and just kind
- 34:07of adapted it to this new model, the Desmos Adisi to to race it,
- 34:14you know, and I don't think they deviated too far from what they
- 34:18had originally to what they brought to Moto GP.
- 34:23So they were they did have some instant success because if you
- 34:26look at the other companies that they were fighting against at
- 34:29the time, you know, Suzuki hadn't had a world super bike
- 34:32championship in a long, long time or a Moto GP championship.
- 34:36Kawasaki, same thing. And at that time, you know, it's
- 34:40a Honda, Suzuki, Kawasaki, Yamaha.
- 34:43And for for that particular year, a lot of people will tell
- 34:46you this is when Yamaha started going through some serious
- 34:50struggles. They didn't have the competitive
- 34:53bike anymore when they adopted, you know, when they moved to the
- 34:57four stroke engine, they kind of fell off very deeply.
- 35:00And This is why eventually, you know, later on and later on
- 35:03season, Valentino Rossi leaves Honda, goes to Yamaha and all of
- 35:06a sudden redevelops that bike, makes it a championship bike,
- 35:09and it becomes a Honda Yamaha competition years where
- 35:12everybody else is racing for whatever Honda and Yamaha don't
- 35:15achieve. Right and Max Biaggi left Yamaha
- 35:19to go to Honda in in for 2003 because he got tired of coming
- 35:23in second place on that Yamaha. Well, and then, well, the same
- 35:27thing kind of happens is is Rossi leaves Honda to go to
- 35:31Yamaha to prove that not only can he make a better bike, he
- 35:35can win on two different manufacturers.
- 35:37But you know, again, another slap in the face of Biaggi.
- 35:41I'm better than you because I was able to take this shit box
- 35:45and make it a championship bike. You have my championship bike
- 35:48and I'm still beating your ass on the shit box you couldn't win
- 35:51on. So you know it's not written
- 35:54that way, but come on, you know the back of Rossi's head.
- 35:58I'm like, this is exactly how it's written in the back of his
- 36:01head, you know, and. Between.
- 36:04The Piaggio and Sede Jibenow like trust me, Rossi has has
- 36:08gone out of his way to make sure that he writes his history of
- 36:11like, shitting on his competition as much as possible.
- 36:15Just with your talent. Right.
- 36:17And, and, and, you know, you know, you say you, you Louis,
- 36:20you said that, you know. Rossi smiled in public and was
- 36:24serious behind closed doors. But he really did smile.
- 36:28He really, when you saw him out, he, he was like, he was always
- 36:32having fun, you know, and maybe he knew he was the, the most
- 36:35prepared or just the most talented guy out there.
- 36:38But he, you know, the, the chain and ball celebration and, and
- 36:43all this stuff that he was doing, you know.
- 36:46When you're winning, you're smiling.
- 36:49And he was winning a lot. You know, if, if he wasn't
- 36:52winning, trust me, he wouldn't be smiling.
- 36:54But when you're winning and you're dominating and you're
- 36:56doing anything you want and you're putting the bike
- 36:58everywhere you want on the track, you're not having any
- 37:00problems. You're finishing any every race.
- 37:03You're not having DNS or retirements, You're going to
- 37:07smile and you're going to find ways to enjoy it.
- 37:09You're and and one of the best things he is, which not a lot of
- 37:13races are, he's a great marketer.
- 37:17If he had, if he had brought that same talent in the age of
- 37:21social media, how much bigger would he be?
- 37:24I mean, he's massive now in an age that he didn't have social
- 37:27media. Like, how much bigger would he
- 37:29be if today he was only 21 years old and he was racing today?
- 37:34Yeah. Yeah, yeah.
- 37:35You know, so this is this is something you have to consider
- 37:38is Rossi became Rossi in a time when the only way you can learn
- 37:42about him is somebody actually called you or saw you face to
- 37:45face and started talking to you about Rossi.
- 37:49Did you see that race? Rossi did not tweeted about it,
- 37:52not posted it on Instagram. Like I actually had to talk to
- 37:54you like a human being and millions of human beings talk to
- 37:59each other to the point where he became this icon.
- 38:02Yeah, yeah. And you know, one of the as I,
- 38:05you know, listening while watching the races, they were
- 38:08talking about, you know, why Rossi didn't take the number one
- 38:11plate. And Rossi's favorite ride is
- 38:14Barry Sheen. And Barry Sheen didn't do it.
- 38:16And so Rossi didn't do it, which is which is pretty impressive.
- 38:21And, and, and, you know, interesting how he moved, right,
- 38:24because he wasn't as arrogant as, you know, you know, he could
- 38:29have been. Yep, he he probably was.
- 38:32He just wasn't in front of the camera because in front of the
- 38:36cameras where you win the fans and if you make the wrong moves
- 38:39in front of the fans, you know that cost you popularity, that
- 38:43cost you money, that cost you, that cost you in ways that you
- 38:48can't buy. You know that publicity you
- 38:50can't buy. But when you do fun things like
- 38:52the ball and chain, when you do fun things like all these other
- 38:55things, now you're buying cachet that you can't buy any other
- 38:59way, no matter how much money. I mean that board and chain
- 39:02thing probably cost, you know, 200 bucks.
- 39:05Right. Right, right.
- 39:07To to come up with that or they're stopping to go to the
- 39:10Porta Potti. You know, that costs nothing.
- 39:13Just the idea and the concept that if I do this, fans are
- 39:16going to get get kicked out of it.
- 39:18It's going to get put on, you know, it's going to become a
- 39:20little bit of iconic. And then even his helmets, you
- 39:24know, coming up with the different designs for different
- 39:26tracks for different events, like this is all stuff that he
- 39:29kind of really pioneered. Right.
- 39:32Yeah, yeah. Yeah, it was going to stay.
- 39:34Also talking about no social media and the fans just watching
- 39:41these races back in the day like it was.
- 39:45You can just see like that you had to be there and wanted to be
- 39:49there. Post it like that where you can
- 39:51just watch it on TV like it's something where you if you
- 39:54missed it, you missed it. But the state of the fans they
- 39:58were, it was packed like, but still to this day is packed or
- 40:02like back then I could just see like, you know, Marcy brought a
- 40:06lot of fans. It was great for the sport, but
- 40:08it definitely was packed, dude, something you had to see.
- 40:12Yeah, and you know, I was going to.
- 40:15I'm glad you brought it up because I was going to bring up
- 40:17about the crowd, the fact that they they had to cancel a couple
- 40:21of the trophies celebration because they were rushing the
- 40:27field on the cooldown lap and it was just kind of like it was
- 40:32just like, oh man, they do this at all the tracks.
- 40:37Crazy. It was definitely that soccer
- 40:39mentality, like that European soccer mentality was very, very
- 40:44big at the time. You know, now tracks have kind
- 40:46of wrangled that in a little bit.
- 40:48I mean, after the race is over, they do let people kind of come
- 40:51on to the front straight if they're having a podium
- 40:52celebration. But back then it's not like the
- 40:55track had a choice, man. Like there's 200,000 of us and
- 40:59you got like 8 security guards. Who you holding back man?
- 41:04And, and, and these riders, I mean, they weren't like going
- 41:07through slow either. What's going on, Reese?
- 41:13Man, welcome to the show. How you doing, man?
- 41:15You know, you, you came on to the show and I and I and I got a
- 41:18chill blowing in the back of my head.
- 41:21You got that look like a cold wherever you are.
- 41:23It's -7 man where I'm at so you can have this crap.
- 41:28I don't want it. Trust me, my fingers hurt.
- 41:34That's, that's, that's definitely, you know, once my,
- 41:38when I was building out my, my, my, my trailer, cargo trailer, I
- 41:43had my daughter helping me out, typing out.
- 41:46I was wiring and she was on a little labeler.
- 41:49She was typing out all the different wiring for lights and
- 41:51all the stuff and then she hands me one and I look at it and says
- 41:55I quit. So you know, you might have to
- 42:01send a little note in on an ice cube or something.
- 42:05Man, for real, it's cold. Man, I've had a day.
- 42:09I hear that, I hear that. Hopefully it won't be for too
- 42:12long. Yeah, man, we talking about
- 42:132003, You know, what are you, what are your thoughts on the
- 42:182003 season? You know, overall all the
- 42:22craziness, all the, all the, all the different crazy stuff that's
- 42:26that happened back then. But what stands out to you?
- 42:30I mean, honestly, what stands out to me was what Lewis said,
- 42:32because there was no crowd control.
- 42:35They just ran out on there, man. They didn't give a damn.
- 42:38I mean, that was like, it was more of a like a a rock star
- 42:44thing. Like it was just as soon as it's
- 42:46over, we're we're bum rushing you.
- 42:48That's it. And we're bum rush like they do
- 42:49in college. They bum rush to field, want to
- 42:51knock down the goal posts and it's more like that.
- 42:55But now like you know, you get it's 200,000 of us versus 8 of
- 43:00you. You know who's going to stop me?
- 43:03Not a, not a, not a soul. No, that was, that was, that was
- 43:06pretty crazy to see. You know, let's start, let you
- 43:09know, let me see a little bit about your thoughts on Nikki
- 43:11Hayden as a rookie coming in being signed to Honda.
- 43:15I don't know if you caught any of what Lewis said about, you
- 43:18know, Nikki Hayden over here in the US was on Honda for like 6
- 43:22years. So it was a no brainer.
- 43:24But, you know, for a we haven't seen a rider go from, you know,
- 43:28Motor America or AMA straight to Moto GP on a factory seat.
- 43:34No, you haven't seen that in a while.
- 43:36I mean, the last person that has ever kind of even remotely was
- 43:39close with Ben Speed. I was going to say that was he
- 43:41on the factory? Was he on a?
- 43:42Was he on a satellite the first year?
- 43:44The first year it was satellite, yeah, factory on world super
- 43:48bike and then went satellite GP. Right, right, right.
- 43:51But then you got to remember Josh Hayes went over there,
- 43:54never did the world super bike thing, went over there as a
- 43:57substitute rider and went top ten.
- 43:59I think he went 7th place that time.
- 44:01Moto GP. Yep, go look it up.
- 44:04A wild card rider. So did Garrett.
- 44:08Garrett was, I think top 12, something like that.
- 44:12So, you know, what was it with US riders then?
- 44:17I mean, I think we kind of, I know, I think I have an idea
- 44:19what you guys are going to say back then versus now because it
- 44:22seems like, you know, the struck was real.
- 44:25And, and, you know, I think we're in the USA feeling like
- 44:28how the Spaniards felt back in 2002, 2003, not having enough
- 44:33flags on the grid to where they dominated the grid for years to,
- 44:38you know, to a point where Rossi had to get his own team.
- 44:40And we see what we're doing now in the US to try to get folks
- 44:43back over there. But you know, what are your
- 44:45thoughts? I mean, we're missing.
- 44:51We were missing before. Like if you looked at it, we
- 44:54were missing a lot of that feeling like where the young
- 44:56kids can come up. It was almost like a stepping
- 44:58stone where the stage, you know, like we didn't have like like
- 45:03the, the European, they have like the smaller bike, the
- 45:06pocket bikes, you want to call it.
- 45:08And then they go to them, they go to the next day they it's
- 45:10like 125 to 250. They keep going up and even over
- 45:14there you can't even if you get your motorcycle endorsement, you
- 45:17can't even go get your motorcycle endorsement and just
- 45:20jump to 1000. You got to go over increments
- 45:23that you'd be able to get to the 1000.
- 45:26So I think that's what we were missing over here, especially
- 45:29after like with that Daytona Motorsports group screwed all
- 45:33AMA up and then COVID happened. It just we were missing that
- 45:37that stage to actually put them on and then, you know,
- 45:42substitute when DMG messed everything up.
- 45:44The Europeans didn't even take us serious.
- 45:47If you actually look, they weren't even taken even now with
- 45:49Moto America. They weren't even taken with
- 45:52that the Junior Cup class series that that's why they went to the
- 46:00bike they're on now with the the Kramer.
- 46:04That's almost, that's almost like a Moto, their entry level
- 46:08bike that's almost like they're 125 and stuff like that.
- 46:12It's more of a race bike design than versus like the Junior Cup
- 46:15class, OK. All right, all right.
- 46:20And before we we, we get you all live.
- 46:22Look at Security Live. Look at Moto GP security back in
- 46:272003. That's about the security level
- 46:38that most of the tracks had back then, to stop people forming the
- 46:42track. Lasting no time.
- 46:55There's good and bad to come with that man.
- 46:58It's good to be able to experience it.
- 47:00From my from my understanding, I don't think anyone got hurt
- 47:03while while any of the Moto GP races were happening.
- 47:06It's not on the track anyway, but it was pretty wild, you
- 47:11know, for that to happen and and I guess we can see where we are,
- 47:14although, you know, Mojelo, do you still do get to go on the
- 47:17track and some of these other tracks, especially this year,
- 47:21they after the after the cooldown lap, they've been
- 47:23letting people on. So it's good to see that again
- 47:26and, and, and, and have that experience, you know?
- 47:32Yeah, Reese, you know, you know, Troy Bayless and Capparazi on a
- 47:36Ducati Ducati's first year, you know, Capparazi finished fourth
- 47:41in the championship that year on the dock.
- 47:44It's a pretty good year for Ducati, man.
- 47:45What? You trying to say I think?
- 47:502003 was a good year, that's what I'm just saying.
- 47:53For their first year in Moto GP compared to you know, KTMI mean,
- 47:57I don't know if it was a previous first year and we'll
- 48:00talk about Edwards as well because he didn't do as well on
- 48:03the Aprilia and it looks like a per year struggle, but Edwards
- 48:06along a factory bike as well. But you know, what are your
- 48:09thoughts on Ducati Dobris, No? I mean, that was a good year for
- 48:13them. I mean, there wasn't a lot of
- 48:15electronics. It was pretty much all up to the
- 48:17rider back then, you know, it was, it was all in your wrist.
- 48:21So I mean, with those guys riding and they were
- 48:24exceptional, you know, coming into the field and Ducati just
- 48:28had a bike that they can actually run and ride.
- 48:31You know, nobody else had a bike that, you know, guys can really
- 48:34ride really could really tame that way or have that natural
- 48:39talent. So I mean, I, I think that was a
- 48:41good year for them. And then it just seemed like
- 48:44from there on it was kind of like lost.
- 48:48Yeah, yeah, yeah, I, I can say that they definitely struggled
- 48:54for a bit because. There was only one person that
- 48:58could ride that bike. It was only one.
- 49:01There was only one person that can ride a Ducati.
- 49:03And that man of the name was Stoner.
- 49:05After that it was no, it was nobody.
- 49:07Besides that, give me a name. Divisioso.
- 49:14I'm talking about before Doby came in.
- 49:16Oh, well, I mean, you got these guys in 2003, paparazzi and
- 49:22Bayless lasted till 2006, so and won, won one race finally in
- 49:302006. Yeah, 2006.
- 49:33He did come back in 2015, but he didn't he didn't win that race,
- 49:37which is also pretty wild in the in the in the in and of itself.
- 49:43Kawasaki, Kawasaki Proton. I mean, they switched from a
- 49:47twin to a 4 cylinder. We had the V fives in there.
- 49:50I engine characteristics I'm hearing about.
- 49:55I think Kenny Roberts lost some money on on that Proton.
- 49:58He probably should have went to a Yamaha, you know, we see, you
- 50:05know, bitmoto or bi motor in in with Cowie and World Super Bike.
- 50:10Will we ever see anything like this again in, in Moto GP where,
- 50:15you know, we'll get, you know, Renault may, may partner with
- 50:19somebody and bring a bike out or something like that?
- 50:25I don't think so. I mean, besides CF Moto, that's
- 50:28about it. I mean, but.
- 50:29They're already making bikes so. Yeah, but that's about it.
- 50:33I don't think anybody else is going to prototype coming out.
- 50:35I don't see anything coming down the pipeline not not that what I
- 50:41can see in the future right now, not unless bike sales starts
- 50:46coming back into play. That's the biggest thing.
- 50:49Bike sales are down real bad. There might be some motor, motor
- 50:56enthusiastic rich person out there.
- 50:58What you thought was TJ on on and you mentioned this last week
- 51:02on the show as well, the Proton bike and stuff like that.
- 51:06Would it be cool to see? It might be cool to see I guess.
- 51:10Yeah. I mean, yeah, you like, I mean,
- 51:15you got to start somewhere. So.
- 51:17I mean, Proton's been around, so I mean, it would be good to see
- 51:23some type of manufacturers try to make their way in, like I
- 51:28said, like CF Moto is definitely merging in in different ways, so
- 51:34it could be kind of like that. But yeah, it'll be good to see
- 51:40something else I would say. Nice, nice.
- 51:45Louis. Same thing you want to add.
- 51:46And I mean, you know, there's rumors of BMW come in, but it's
- 51:50not the same. I mean, you know.
- 51:52I mean, the the top three rumors right now are Suzuki looking to
- 51:56get back in the paddock, CF Moto looking to get into the paddock
- 52:02of those three and BMW or those two And BMWI would say the very
- 52:06first or top one would probably be CF Moto just because they
- 52:10have very, very deep pockets behind them.
- 52:14I would say Suzuki only because Suzuki has been in the game.
- 52:17And I know Suzuki, this has been a rumor for a long time, but
- 52:21they really are planning on launching some new models in
- 52:252026 going into 2027 that would align with them trying to do a
- 52:29big marketing push to get these new models out there.
- 52:33And, and at the bottom, I would say BMWI don't think BMW has big
- 52:38aspirations to go to Moto GP that fast.
- 52:41I think they want to stay in World Super Bike.
- 52:43I think they see where their bread and butter is.
- 52:45If their bikes are winning, World Super Bike.
- 52:47If their bikes are winning in regional Super Bike classes,
- 52:51that directly attributes sales of their BMWs at the
- 52:56dealerships. Versus.
- 52:58You know versus you know, if Yamaha wins in Moto GP is not
- 53:01like I can buy an M1 if I have I have like an 1, you know if.
- 53:08I mean you can if you got some $1,000,000 in your pocket.
- 53:11And I never ride it because I don't have a big engineer with
- 53:13me that's going to explain to me how these buttons work.
- 53:20So, you know, I think BMW seen kind of the writing on the wall.
- 53:24Yeah, we'd like to be a Moto GP because there's a prestige to
- 53:27being there, but there's also a huge cost.
- 53:29And how does that correlate to the sales of my motorcycle?
- 53:32Because Honda is there and Yamaha is there and they're not
- 53:35selling more R ones or CBR1 thousands.
- 53:38When R ones and CBR1000 start winning in world sewer bike,
- 53:42they'll start selling more bikes in the street and vice versa.
- 53:45Then it'll grow, you know. So I think BMW stay where
- 53:49they're at. I think CF Moto, if they want
- 53:52people to take them as a serious brand, because even though
- 53:55Chinese companies make incredible products for a big
- 54:00swath of the world, they're still looked as the cheap
- 54:04manufacturer. Like this is where you go to buy
- 54:07things made cheaply and they actually make really quality
- 54:11products. They make incredibly good
- 54:13quality products. Even though it looks like
- 54:15they're stealing parts from a Ducati, parts from a Honda, and
- 54:18parts from Yamaha and putting them together to build a bike,
- 54:21they're still building quality bikes.
- 54:24So they're the ones that more than anybody else needs that
- 54:27world stage to show off their prestige.
- 54:32And in Suzuki, you know, they're a brand that's been in Moto GP
- 54:35several times. The last time they were Moto GP,
- 54:38they did have success. It's just they don't have as
- 54:41deep pockets as some of these other companies.
- 54:42So unless they're going to go there with a heavy, heavy
- 54:45sponsorship deal that's going to keep them in the game for an
- 54:48extended period of time, I mean, they can win.
- 54:50Their last Suzuki was a 4 cylinder bike in Line 4 built
- 54:55off a GSXR platform and it won. It handled great, it rode like
- 55:01it was on rails sometimes and it won races, man.
- 55:04So when they left GP it was actually really sad because it's
- 55:07not like they were a struggling motorcycle company that wasn't
- 55:11racist. No, they were at the pinnacle.
- 55:14Yeah, I would like to see if CF Moto doesn't come back, I really
- 55:18or come in. I really would like to see
- 55:19Suzuki come back into the paddock with the right
- 55:23sponsorship, with the right deal.
- 55:24Like they can't sponsor themselves, like they can't be
- 55:26the Suzuki bike, that's all Suzuki branded.
- 55:29Like they need a strong partner to partner with and if they can
- 55:33do that and they can sustain it, you know, they can leave spikes
- 55:37to another team and they can have 4 Suzuki's out there.
- 55:40Because I really do believe that, you know, Suzuki, Yamaha
- 55:44and Honda are three names that need to be a Moto GP next to
- 55:49Ducati. And if KTM goes away, I could
- 55:51care less. Man, I would not lose a wink of
- 55:53sleep if I never see a KTM in a Moto GP paddock again.
- 55:57Oh man. I mean, I mean, I got to
- 56:00piggyback off of what Lewis said.
- 56:02I mean that's the reason why Kawasaki is not there.
- 56:05Kawasaki was like, oh, Kawasaki needs to come back.
- 56:08They were so heavy focused on World Super Bike and not
- 56:14spending the money of what, billion dollars over there in GP
- 56:18that doesn't sell them any St. product where your World Super
- 56:23Bike sells your street by your street product because it's
- 56:26actually something people can walk into a dealership and buy.
- 56:32So So what it what it? What is the brand selling for in
- 56:35GP if it's not selling bikes? It's actually selling, it's not
- 56:40selling anything. It's actually everything that GP
- 56:43produces or comes into play. It kind of supposed to be figure
- 56:49out the prototype. It's supposed to be a way to
- 56:51figure out how can we make this into a consumer product.
- 56:58Because where Yamaha, I think what Ducati was doing it for a
- 57:02while first, but then I know Yamaha really excelled in it.
- 57:05Which was the, what was it? The Stealth, the yarn Access .6,
- 57:10the six points of measuring? All that is a Morelli system
- 57:14coming out of F1. We've been using that when I
- 57:16first started in 2014. That's all it is.
- 57:19It's Morelli system figuring out how to now make it into a
- 57:23consumer product. I mean unless you want to go
- 57:26spend 4 grand on a Morelli system and then $400.00 an hour
- 57:31for trying to figure out how to work the damn thing from tech
- 57:34service. Seems like a lot of words to go
- 57:38fast. But you know, for me immortals,
- 57:44Speaking of me, immortals set a Jubenale, Max, BRJ, Caparossi
- 57:49and Cheka. I mean, do you think these guys
- 57:52Korea would have been different if you know valley would have
- 57:55sat out a a few years in in in Moto GP and it you know, any of
- 58:00these guys had a chance. I mean, Max finished twice in
- 58:052nd place, Juvenile finished in second place.
- 58:07So it's possible they could have.
- 58:09But you know, points, you know, they were they were down on
- 58:12points. What are your thoughts on those
- 58:14four guys? You know, and you know, if
- 58:16Michael Jordan stopped the, you know, these guys from winning
- 58:18championship, these are some guys that were pretty fast that
- 58:21Rossi said not today. Your thoughts, TJ?
- 58:25Yeah. I mean, I think all they needed
- 58:29was Rossi just to make a few mistakes.
- 58:31I mean, like, I mean like he made mistakes, but you know,
- 58:35like, like he was the same like he had barely any DNS.
- 58:40So like if he wasn't, if he wasn't in the season, I think it
- 58:45would have been much of a little bit of a little bit of a good
- 58:48fight still. But yeah, she and Sede Jamal,
- 58:53but he appreciated all their names.
- 58:55But like he he was pretty impressive throughout the
- 58:58season. Put up a really good fight, even
- 59:01though like he didn't win a lot of his races and and stuff like
- 59:05that. But Kaparazi and and Piaggi,
- 59:09they all look good. I mean, Piaggi wasn't there.
- 59:14I don't know who would have won, won.
- 59:16I mean, like, let's see, Piaggi came in second, Kaparazi in 3rd.
- 59:23So yeah, this, I mean, Piaggi has to put up both points.
- 59:27But if Rossi wasn't there, I think it was a different story.
- 59:31Yeah, yeah. I mean, you know, I I had my two
- 59:34cents. What are your thoughts on on
- 59:35that, Reese? You know, if Rossi was in the
- 59:38air and these other guys, I mean, you know, they still got
- 59:41to look themselves in the mirror and, you know.
- 59:44I mean, of course they would have had more points.
- 59:46I mean, that's just like Jordan and them Jordan when Jordan
- 59:49wasn't there, everybody was trying to go win the
- 59:50championship. You know, it was it's the same
- 59:53thing. So if Rossi wasn't there, that
- 59:55was dominating or the getting the special tires, I mean, yeah,
- 59:59of course. Special tires, Special bike.
- 1:00:03Right. So of course they would have
- 1:00:05won, they had a better opportunity or their career
- 1:00:06might have been longer, might have been different scenario.
- 1:00:09But I mean, when you have someone there that is like
- 1:00:14Jordan or Rossi, the face of the brand or the face of the the
- 1:00:19company, you can and someone that is portrayed as the next,
- 1:00:25you know, the next big thing or the next generation or, you
- 1:00:28know, something like that. I mean, of course you can't.
- 1:00:31You got nothing to compare to you.
- 1:00:33There's nothing to compete against.
- 1:00:34I can't you know, he that Jordan's the face was the face
- 1:00:37of the NBA and Rossi's the face of Moto GP.
- 1:00:41You can ask people nowadays and still the name Rossi will come
- 1:00:44up. You're like, dude, he's retired.
- 1:00:46Then move on all. Right.
- 1:00:50What are your thoughts, Ty Lewis?
- 1:00:51I got a question for all of you. What what makes a win more
- 1:00:56special? Winning against somebody that is
- 1:01:00super dominant and then every once in a while you beat him or
- 1:01:05every weekend somebody else winning because nobody's
- 1:01:08dominant. Because this is the two dynamics
- 1:01:11that you're looking at. For me, if there's one person
- 1:01:14that's super dominant and I beat them that weekend, you know, I'm
- 1:01:19going to thump my chest a lot because man, I beat the, I beat
- 1:01:21the Michael Jordan of my sport this weekend.
- 1:01:24But if we Fast forward to like 2 years ago when it was Bagnaya
- 1:01:29this weekend and Martine this weekend and this other guy this
- 1:01:33weekend and this other guy this weekend and this other guy this
- 1:01:36weekend and there was no consistency.
- 1:01:38Anybody could win every weekend. There was no special weekend
- 1:01:42because anybody can win every weekend.
- 1:01:45If you have to go in and fight a super villain, not a villain of
- 1:01:49the week, super villain and beat that super villain, there's a
- 1:01:54little bit more swag because you beat the Super villain.
- 1:01:58Like I didn't beat like the the the entry level boss.
- 1:02:02I beat the boss of the stage. You know, I don't know if you
- 1:02:07know, the last couple of years, Lewis, I mean, they they was
- 1:02:10mostly Martine and Bagnaya winning, not like a whole bunch.
- 1:02:14But I, I, I get what you're saying.
- 1:02:17You know, I will say this and and then Reese and TJ can jump
- 1:02:23in. If you fancy yourself to be one
- 1:02:26of the best, you want to battle against the best, right?
- 1:02:29But I'd rather be, you know, Djokovic on the dog going
- 1:02:35against Federer and Andy Roddick.
- 1:02:39No disrespect to Andy, I love you guys, but you got one.
- 1:02:43I think, let's put it this, I think as as a competitor, for
- 1:02:49instance, this year when when Bazecki finally beat Marquez in
- 1:02:54a straight up head to head, I think even though it's a win and
- 1:02:59he's going to be super emotional just knowing that on this day
- 1:03:03I'm the best rider in the world and I'd be the best rider in the
- 1:03:06world. You just kind of lift your head
- 1:03:09a little bit high. Oh yes, for sure, for sure.
- 1:03:12But you, I think you want to be Martine.
- 1:03:14Yeah, it's like, yeah, be Martine.
- 1:03:19I, I, yeah, I can see that. I mean, I can see that because
- 1:03:21they, they came up to Moto 2 together and stuff like that.
- 1:03:24And, and, you know, I, I think Bez feel like he's a better
- 1:03:27rider than Martine. I mean, you know, I, you know
- 1:03:30what I mean? And and so I I I would see that.
- 1:03:33And he he himself even said this year when he did beat Mark in
- 1:03:38some head to head battles that, you know, it, it felt different
- 1:03:44knowing that he beat Marquez. You know, because you are,
- 1:03:47you're beating on that day, you're beating what's considered
- 1:03:51the best person in that sport period, at this moment.
- 1:03:55So you're saying these guys then they they all feel pretty bad
- 1:03:58and have nightmares? About they should have
- 1:04:00nightmares, man, but they shouldn't because it's not like
- 1:04:02you lost to Jorge Martin you not you didn't lose to like you
- 1:04:06know, you didn't lose to like stage 1 boss.
- 1:04:08You lost to the top boss. You didn't lose to Zangief.
- 1:04:13You lost to M Bison. You.
- 1:04:16Know. You didn't lose to Cortana.
- 1:04:21You, you, you lose to Shao Sung, You know, like you, you, you
- 1:04:24lost to the top boss. Everybody loses to the top boss.
- 1:04:27And you keep putting orders in the machine until you learn the
- 1:04:30pattern and you beat them. And then when you beat them, you
- 1:04:32you feel good that you beat them.
- 1:04:34Yeah, all right, all right, TJ, you want to anything you want to
- 1:04:39add to it or what? What Lewis said.
- 1:04:42No, I mean, I, I agree with that.
- 1:04:44I mean, I'm the type of competitor that I want to beat
- 1:04:47the number one guy and it's just it gives me more motivation
- 1:04:51after that. And if anything, if I if I don't
- 1:04:56do well or for the for the future after that, at least I
- 1:05:00can say I beat that. No more guy.
- 1:05:01You didn't. So it's kind of like a
- 1:05:05milestone. Yeah.
- 1:05:06You know you want. Rossi to look at you and be you
- 1:05:09got to you got to respect my my ride.
- 1:05:10Yeah, exactly. You know, so, but I guess it's
- 1:05:13just the way the sports going, you know, a lot of people want
- 1:05:16to see a lot of top riders and right now it's just been back
- 1:05:20and forth and I guess just the entertainment that we like to
- 1:05:23see nowadays. And yeah, I mean, I I do like
- 1:05:27the the one dominator where it's just like, alright, somebody got
- 1:05:31beat this guy, you know, like basically I'm a Patriots fan,
- 1:05:34you know, we want so many Super Bowls or like, you know, you
- 1:05:37like to Ducatis, like, you know, Ducatis was just 123456, you
- 1:05:41know, so. You know, I say you Ducati
- 1:05:50complex. So so yeah, I do like to see
- 1:05:55that. But also, you know, you know,
- 1:05:57it's just the way our sport's going for you got to have
- 1:06:01multiple things to root for instead of that one.
- 1:06:05I hate that reason. Why add to that, I mean, you
- 1:06:07know, you know, you already know you guys, you guys are the top
- 1:06:12dogs and the people are coming for you.
- 1:06:14So I guess you kind of know what that feels like.
- 1:06:17I mean, yeah, I mean, when you're going against the top
- 1:06:20dogs, I mean, if you want to be the best, you got to beat the
- 1:06:22best. And it's just like back in the
- 1:06:24day, like Mad Max used to say, you know, going against Jordan
- 1:06:28that night before you could, you know, you got to get some sleep
- 1:06:33because you're going to get the top dog.
- 1:06:34But you just, you know, it was hard to sleep because it's on
- 1:06:37your mind. But you got to get, you got to
- 1:06:39go to bed. You're not going out to party.
- 1:06:41You're not going out to do this. But it's what in line with TJ
- 1:06:45and Lewis said, I mean, I want to beat the best.
- 1:06:48I'm a competitor. And if, if I want to say I'm the
- 1:06:51best, I want to beat the best, you know, and it's just I want
- 1:06:56to meet you. If if I don't beat you, then how
- 1:06:58the heck am I going to say I'm the best?
- 1:07:00You know, how can I say that? You know, I, I can't, I'm just
- 1:07:03second banana. I I hear that Speaking of the
- 1:07:06best and we've been talking about Jordan a lot.
- 1:07:10Jordan went up against NASCAR and they settled and these guys
- 1:07:15had to sit shoulder to shoulder next to Jordan and let Jordan
- 1:07:19talk first while they kind of agreed to everything Mr. Jordan
- 1:07:22said is, you know, as you know, it's I don't know the insurance
- 1:07:28and out of what happened, but it sounds like, you know, it's a
- 1:07:30good look for NASCAR overall. What were your thoughts on, you
- 1:07:34know, Jordan taking up the the French family and and and trying
- 1:07:38to change how teams make money and stuff like that?
- 1:07:42And would that can we see that in the future?
- 1:07:44Because we've talked about it on the show, how, you know, teams
- 1:07:47can make money and and survive in the motorcycle racing.
- 1:07:50Is there anything that can possible trickle into the
- 1:07:54motorcycle business from that Cause Jordan says, you know, you
- 1:07:59got to treat it more like the NBA where, you know, the
- 1:08:02franchises also got to play to pick pay out the players a
- 1:08:05little bit more than just a salary.
- 1:08:08Well, you know what we're thought which TJ and then we'll
- 1:08:10go around the horn and and and see what it what it is.
- 1:08:16Yeah, I mean, I'm about to like look more into this, but like,
- 1:08:18that's crazy. That's good news that that
- 1:08:24Michael Jordan is even being mentioned with NASCAR, you know
- 1:08:26so well. You know that Jordan has a team
- 1:08:30in NASCAR 2311 and, and, and so and that's his team.
- 1:08:35And one other team brought a lawsuit against NASCAR for a
- 1:08:39monopolistic, monopolistic practice and might be jacking up
- 1:08:42that word, you know, been running a monopoly and, and
- 1:08:47teams can make money from that. So that's pretty much the gist
- 1:08:49of it, but it's not easy when you're going against a giant
- 1:08:52like, you know, NASCAR or the NFL or NBA.
- 1:08:58Yeah. I mean, so, so, So what you're
- 1:09:02saying basically it's a settlement towards Jordan for
- 1:09:06the situation because like I didn't, I didn't really heard
- 1:09:09about it, that's all. We'll, we'll, we'll let the
- 1:09:11other guys talk about it and we'll live together.
- 1:09:16So as somebody that lives in NASCAR HQ Charlotte, NC, this
- 1:09:21has been big, big news since the lawsuit was originally filed.
- 1:09:26And really high level synopsis is the way that NASCAR works is
- 1:09:32you have to re up every year to continue working with NASCAR.
- 1:09:38So you have to keep registering. So, so in the NBA, for instance,
- 1:09:43you own the team and you become a profit sharing partner with
- 1:09:48the NBA. If you own the team in NASCAR,
- 1:09:52there's charters and every year you have to renew your charter
- 1:09:55with NASCAR to stay in the paddock.
- 1:09:58So you don't really, you own your team, but your team never
- 1:10:01accrues value because there's no longevity.
- 1:10:04If you don't sign with NASCAR or they don't renew your charter,
- 1:10:09you can't sell your team for shit.
- 1:10:10So your team as a team can never build value.
- 1:10:13Like if the Dallas Cowboys every year had to go back to the NFL
- 1:10:16and ask can we stay in the NFL that the Dallas Cowboys would
- 1:10:20not be worth, you know, 2 1/2 billion dollars or whatever
- 1:10:23they're worth. They would be worth list because
- 1:10:25every year you're at the mercy of the NFL if they want to keep
- 1:10:28keep you. So now take that to another
- 1:10:31level. We've mentioned this in another
- 1:10:33episode. NASCAR itself owns most of the
- 1:10:36tracks that NASCAR races on, or they require those tracks to
- 1:10:40sign exclusivity agreements where they don't let other
- 1:10:43competing brands race at those tracks.
- 1:10:47So there was another company that was trying to build a
- 1:10:50competitor to NASCAR in a similar type of stock racing.
- 1:10:53NASCAR went went to all the tracks that they work that they
- 1:10:56don't directly own and made them sign exclusivity deals so these
- 1:11:00teams couldn't compete on those tracks, limiting where these
- 1:11:04companies can go raise. So these are all anti
- 1:11:07competitive practices and they're a little bit of
- 1:11:09monopoly. What they were suing for was a
- 1:11:12little bit more of the profit sharing, but the most important
- 1:11:15part was getting rid of these charters.
- 1:11:17If I have a team and I'm in NASCAR, my team is part of
- 1:11:23NASCAR forever. I don't have to keep re signing
- 1:11:25up every year. And by doing that now my team
- 1:11:29has equity as being part of NASCAR, so it can build in value
- 1:11:33over time. And if I ever want to get out of
- 1:11:35NASCAR racing, I can sell my team just as I would sell an NBA
- 1:11:39team or an NFL team or an MLB team for millions and millions
- 1:11:43of dollars, hundreds of millions or billions of dollars.
- 1:11:47And even in the NBA, the NFL and so forth, if these teams fall
- 1:11:52under certain thresholds, so like the town isn't showing up,
- 1:11:56your attendance is down, the stadium is not building.
- 1:11:59You can move the team and do other things, but you still own
- 1:12:02the team. So this was one of the biggest
- 1:12:05things is if you own the team, but you're not in permanently a
- 1:12:09fixture in NASCAR, you can never build equity in the team.
- 1:12:13And this has been like this for a long time.
- 1:12:15And it took someone like a Michael Jordan that has a big
- 1:12:19name that can take it out to the public and say I'm not going to
- 1:12:23sign this shit because my team has been here for so long.
- 1:12:26These are anti competitive practices.
- 1:12:28This is a monopoly that you have here.
- 1:12:31And for all the years I've been investing in this team and this
- 1:12:34team might make money. This team is never going to
- 1:12:36build equity over time because I have to keep coming back to you
- 1:12:39and begging you to stay in NASCAR.
- 1:12:42Like this is anti competitive and this is kind of like the
- 1:12:45main structure of the lawsuit. So now they asked for four
- 1:12:50specific things. They got 3 1/2 of the four
- 1:12:54things that they wanted in this settlement.
- 1:12:56So they have permanent charters now.
- 1:12:58So now you are permanently part of it.
- 1:13:01They get more money on the international distribution deals
- 1:13:06when their likenesses are used by NASCAR for promotion or to
- 1:13:10sell NASCAR events. So overall, this is really good
- 1:13:14for the teams because the teams now have equity in the sport and
- 1:13:19they can build the equity in their own brand within the
- 1:13:22sport. And it's amazing that for this
- 1:13:25long, this is the way. I mean, this is the the the the
- 1:13:29vice grip, the stranglehold that this family had on NASCAR for
- 1:13:34all these years. You know, people just didn't
- 1:13:36want to lose the ability to be in NASCAR.
- 1:13:39So they would just sign these charter, they would sign these
- 1:13:41less than profitable agreements just because they didn't want to
- 1:13:45lose their spot on the NASCAR grid.
- 1:13:48So it's amazing that Michael Jordan is such a businessman
- 1:13:53that he took what he applied in the NBA.
- 1:13:55And this is, again, why so many players in the NBA make millions
- 1:13:59of dollars now, not just on the field, but not on the court, but
- 1:14:03also off the court with sponsorship, with deals.
- 1:14:06And he took that same bulldogged, you know, method of
- 1:14:10thinking, and he forced it into a sport that one is not really
- 1:14:14known for being very accepted of certain races.
- 1:14:21There's a lot of Confederate flags that still fly over all
- 1:14:23these NASCAR events when you go to them.
- 1:14:27And it literally took an African American player to go to these
- 1:14:30white boys and be like, yo, you guys are getting screwed by
- 1:14:33these other white boys. Let me show you the way.
- 1:14:37So I hope that next year we see a few less Confederate flags and
- 1:14:40we see a few more jumping man flags because he really is
- 1:14:45changing the dynamics of NASCAR from this point moving forward.
- 1:14:48NASCAR now is going to be in a better position to grow and for
- 1:14:52the team to actually grow than it's ever been before, You know,
- 1:14:57because most of the teams actually work on a loss.
- 1:15:00Like there's teams that have been around for years and the
- 1:15:03only thing that keeps them in business is the other businesses
- 1:15:06that those people own that help them keep this business going.
- 1:15:11Michael Jordan's the hero. I didn't, I didn't, I didn't
- 1:15:15know that was that was the case with NASCAR.
- 1:15:18Like I don't follow the sport like that.
- 1:15:20So I didn't know like it was that that that's crazy to just
- 1:15:24stay in it. And hopefully this changes a lot
- 1:15:28too. Hopefully you see more more
- 1:15:30different type of writers and and stuff like that too.
- 1:15:35The thing is, The thing is this is that, you know, the way
- 1:15:42Jordan went about it and you know, the people that talked
- 1:15:46about, you know, what NASCAR was going to do and how you know
- 1:15:50this wasn't going to work. I mean, they got to eat crow now
- 1:15:53because there are a lot of people speculating that, you
- 1:15:56know, NASCAR was going to win the lawsuit and, and this wasn't
- 1:16:00going to go in Jordan's way and stuff like that.
- 1:16:02And, and, and again, you know, I don't know if they're part, I
- 1:16:04hate to say it like this, the, the, the, the, the good boy
- 1:16:07network or the good old boy network or whatever the case may
- 1:16:11be, but a lot of people thought Jordan was crazy for doing this.
- 1:16:14And again, not to say he doesn't need the money, but he really
- 1:16:18doesn't need the money. But he's just like, Yo, we can
- 1:16:21either blow this thing up or we can work.
- 1:16:23We can build it together. And and you know, it makes sense
- 1:16:26to build it up and blow it up. And the French father dude is
- 1:16:28just right next to him while he's saying that.
- 1:16:30I know this man must have been beside himself.
- 1:16:33No, it was, you know, a lot of other teams that signed those
- 1:16:37charters really did not give any Like they thought Michael Jordan
- 1:16:41did not have even one snowball's chance in hell of breaking this
- 1:16:47monopoly. You know they would just this is
- 1:16:49the good old boy network. This this boy ain't going to
- 1:16:52come in here and change our sport, all right?
- 1:16:56What he? Did.
- 1:16:58He, what he did is he actually, he took the curtain and opened
- 1:17:03the curtain and let the fans actually see what happens behind
- 1:17:07the curtain, how the Wizard of Oz really works.
- 1:17:10And he wanted to get the lawsuit into court because once you get
- 1:17:14into that lawsuit territory, you have to go through depositions.
- 1:17:20You know, there's discovery that.
- 1:17:22So all this stuff comes out and even in the emails that NASCAR
- 1:17:26had to provide. Yeah, yeah.
- 1:17:28Literally had emails showing what they were doing to keep the
- 1:17:31stranglehold in this monopoly. So not only did Michael Jordan
- 1:17:35really expose The Dirty secrets of NASCAR, now the fans can see
- 1:17:40it. And Michael Jordan also exposed
- 1:17:42it to a new fan base that wasn't part of NASCAR, right?
- 1:17:45So, you know, I hope, I mean, Motor America doesn't have
- 1:17:50NASCAR money, but there's a lot of, there's a lot of shady shit
- 1:17:54that happens in behind the scenes at Motor America as well.
- 1:17:58Like, you know, I've, I've been hearing rumors that there's guys
- 1:18:00that have been waiting since Laguna Seca for contingency
- 1:18:03money from Motor Americas. Now, if this is true, like why
- 1:18:09does somebody have to wait half a year to get their contingency
- 1:18:12payment? You know, why do these teams
- 1:18:15need to pay these exorbitant fees?
- 1:18:18Why do you you know what other things are happening?
- 1:18:21So this could just be the first domino to fall where people are
- 1:18:24starting to see what wait, Michael Jordan in that in that
- 1:18:26sport, you know, how does that apply to this?
- 1:18:29Sport. Yeah, I mean that that's pretty
- 1:18:33much what I was asking. What are your thoughts Reese,
- 1:18:35before we get out of here, you know, good luck for for a NASCAR
- 1:18:39and and maybe might get into your sport.
- 1:18:43I mean, I don't really follow NASCAR that much, but I mean, it
- 1:18:45seems like a good look. I mean, it's someone that peeled
- 1:18:47the curtain back, like Lewis said behind the scenes and
- 1:18:50actually let people see what's going on.
- 1:18:53So I mean, hopefully it does circle down to our side and, you
- 1:18:56know, boost the sport up even more.
- 1:18:58I mean can never hurt. No, we can't.
- 1:19:02We can't. We can't.
- 1:19:02Yeah. I don't follow sports that just
- 1:19:03go left, left, left, left, left, left, left, left.
- 1:19:06Yeah. Horny man.
- 1:19:10I'd rather watch paint dry. I will say the couple of Rd.
- 1:19:15races they have are really exciting, man.
- 1:19:18The couple of NASCAR road race course events that they have,
- 1:19:20those are really exciting. A couple.
- 1:19:25It takes a lot of skill to go bumper to bumper next to other
- 1:19:29people. And.
- 1:19:31I trust and I'll get claustrophobic when you're
- 1:19:33boxing on the inside. Oh man, well, I want thanks
- 1:19:39everyone for coming on next week.
- 1:19:40We're going to be talking about 2004 season, so definitely check
- 1:19:44it out on Moto GPI. Want to thank everyone for
- 1:19:47subscribing, liking and commenting.

- 1:19:52Shout out to Corey. I really appreciate the kind
- 1:19:55words. We're doing our best here to
- 1:19:56keep everyone entertained. It's always nice to hear that,
- 1:20:00you know, people appreciate what we're doing and stuff like that.

- 1:20:05So definitely excited. For what's to come, I want to
- 1:20:09shout out Reese from Attack, Yamaha, the real Luis Ortega,
