- 0:08Speaker 1: Now Barr McKinnon from uh from Umlaut, and we've got
- 0:15Speaker 1: an album coming out this month. I think it's the
- 0:19Speaker 1: twenty first or somewhere around there. I'm, uh yeah, we've
- 0:25Speaker 1: We're a Melbourne band that uh that's kind of like
- 0:28Speaker 1: been on again, off again for for several years and
- 0:32Speaker 1: uh yeah we have we have kind of a nice
- 0:34Speaker 1: little shiny album where we're releasing this month called des La,
- 0:40Speaker 1: which admittedly is kind of a terrible, terrible name for
- 0:43Speaker 1: an album, but I'm gonna blame that on my guitarist,
- 0:46Speaker 1: who I just decided to let me.
- 0:49Speaker 2: He's like, I don't know, we had it was the
- 0:51Speaker 2: name of one of the songs.
- 0:51Speaker 1: It's French for sorry, kind of a pathetic, pathetic thing.
- 0:58Speaker 1: But I was sort of thinking that, you know, we're
- 1:00Speaker 1: these things come up where it's like in the in
- 1:01Speaker 1: the aftermath of these of all this this kind of
- 1:05Speaker 1: shit show that's going on from my country of origin,
- 1:10Speaker 1: it sort of fits, you know. It's kind of like
- 1:12Speaker 1: this cringey thing that that Americans are sort of feeling.
- 1:14Speaker 2: We're sort of like sorry anyway, not to get too
- 1:21Speaker 2: deep into that, but it's sort of it sort of fits.
- 1:23Speaker 1: But it's but it's actually the name of a of
- 1:25Speaker 1: one of the songs that has has been in read
- 1:28Speaker 1: that I've actually renamed since to STFU, which I think
- 1:33Speaker 1: speaks for herself.
- 1:36Speaker 3: Did But she's a pleasure to have you on the show.
- 1:41Speaker 2: Thanks man.
- 1:42Speaker 3: No, no, I'm going to be be the last person
- 1:45Speaker 3: to correct anyone on anything because I fuck up all
- 1:47Speaker 3: the time. But I'm pretty sure that album death La
- 1:49Speaker 3: is coming out in twenty fifth of July from my
- 1:51Speaker 3: from my information.
- 1:52Speaker 1: Okay, that sounds right. It was like the twenty yeah,
- 1:56Speaker 1: twenty first to twenty fifth, I wasn't sure, Like I
- 1:58Speaker 1: don't know, I'm so kind of out outside of this,
- 2:01Speaker 1: like yeah, I mean and again this thing has been
- 2:04Speaker 1: so kind of delayed and the long time coming like
- 2:08Speaker 1: this album that I yeah, I'm on some levels, I
- 2:13Speaker 1: don't even believe that it's going to come out. I'm
- 2:15Speaker 1: hoping that it does just because yeah, something like that.
- 2:24Speaker 3: But just the album that's so I used out to
- 2:27Speaker 3: start to live twenty fifteen day you got me into
- 2:28Speaker 3: on it, So it's been more from a musical point
- 2:31Speaker 3: of view, how about you got forward it.
- 2:35Speaker 1: I don't know, I mean, I guess because the band
- 2:37Speaker 1: is has been in the past very kind of like
- 2:39Speaker 1: instrumental and kind of like sort of a chamber pop
- 2:43Speaker 1: instrumental sort of affair with you know, some sung songs
- 2:47Speaker 1: thrown in there, songs with vocals. This song this album
- 2:52Speaker 1: has has is it's pretty kind of vocal heavy. I
- 2:55Speaker 1: guess in a way, it's sort of driven. It's like
- 2:57Speaker 1: it's kind of straight ahead in a lot of ways.
- 3:00Speaker 1: And I was, you know, it's funny to get these
- 3:02Speaker 1: questions like what what is different about this album?
- 3:06Speaker 2: And I'm not really.
- 3:07Speaker 1: Sure that the main difference with this album is that
- 3:09Speaker 1: it's got Danny, the legendary Danny Hygefitz on drums from
- 3:11Speaker 1: mister Bungle, you know, the the true, the true DNA
- 3:16Speaker 1: of of mister Bungle there rhythm section, and he's down
- 3:22Speaker 1: here in this town with us and has has sort
- 3:25Speaker 1: of graced us with his with his drumming on this
- 3:28Speaker 1: album and so this so we're really excited about that
- 3:32Speaker 1: people hearing that, and I think people will hear that
- 3:35Speaker 1: kind of that that mister Bungle sort of DNA and
- 3:37Speaker 1: the drums there when they.
- 3:39Speaker 2: Hear Danny doing these his thing.
- 3:41Speaker 1: It's just kind of a very straight ahead you know,
- 3:44Speaker 1: it doesn't it doesn't mess around. It's not trying to
- 3:46Speaker 1: be clever, it's not trying to reinvent the wheel. And
- 3:50Speaker 1: so in some of the a lot of the songs
- 3:53Speaker 1: that came that ended up on this album were things
- 3:55Speaker 1: that we were sort of bringing into our live set
- 3:59Speaker 1: over the past couple years, just trying to I guess,
- 4:01Speaker 1: to my mind, I was thinking of like stuff that
- 4:03Speaker 1: kind of had higher energy and you know, instead of
- 4:07Speaker 1: instead of like introspective, navel gazing kind of instrumental stuff,
- 4:12Speaker 1: which you know, a lot of a lot of the
- 4:16Speaker 1: semi recent kind of UMLA stuff has sort of been that.
- 4:18Speaker 1: You know, it's funny because I guess so if I'm
- 4:20Speaker 1: looking at it in a really black and white way,
- 4:22Speaker 1: I could go like, yeah, we got I was thinking,
- 4:24Speaker 1: you know, I sort of hear my my my thoughts
- 4:26Speaker 1: saying things like, you know, we got tired of boring
- 4:28Speaker 1: people with chamber pop, you know, and when they're out
- 4:32Speaker 1: there just wanting to have a good time at the
- 4:33Speaker 1: pub or the or the or the venue or whatever,
- 4:36Speaker 1: and then we're just we're sort of like delivering on.
- 4:38Speaker 2: That in a way, and it's just having fun.
- 4:41Speaker 1: I think it's like some of these songs are really
- 4:44Speaker 1: kind of pop rock heavy, and then that sounds kind
- 4:47Speaker 1: of gross to just put it in that category, but
- 4:50Speaker 1: that's just me sort of trying to be honest with it.
- 4:52Speaker 1: And and there's also but there's something really funny insofar
- 4:56Speaker 1: as like me doing vocals, like, you know, in a
- 5:00Speaker 1: front man kind of role, like in front of Danny,
- 5:04Speaker 1: who I've never you know, I've never really.
- 5:06Speaker 2: Kind of done that.
- 5:07Speaker 1: And it was like it's funny because the first time
- 5:09Speaker 1: we had him playing with us, I was it was
- 5:11Speaker 1: really cringey where I was just like going like, oh man,
- 5:13Speaker 1: this is so embarrassing, Like Danny, you know, has to
- 5:18Speaker 1: listen to me my singing my heart out, you know
- 5:20Speaker 1: and kind of belting these songs out, you know, as
- 5:23Speaker 1: best I could.
- 5:24Speaker 2: And it was just like it was as it.
- 5:26Speaker 1: Was just kind of like a moment that I had
- 5:28Speaker 1: at some point where I was like, oh my god,
- 5:29Speaker 1: this is so embarrassing, Like Danny's Danny said, you know,
- 5:32Speaker 1: doing his Danny thing with the straight face kind of
- 5:36Speaker 1: not giving anything away what he's thinking about it or whatever,
- 5:39Speaker 1: and he's very forgiving and very he's very Yeah, it
- 5:44Speaker 1: was just it was just kind of one of those
- 5:45Speaker 1: moments where it's just like, you know, I'm trying to
- 5:48Speaker 1: think of like what is an what is a sort
- 5:50Speaker 1: of an analog of that would be sort of like,
- 5:54Speaker 1: I don't know, it's just like somebody knows you doing
- 5:57Speaker 1: a certain thing, whether it's just just me sort of
- 5:59Speaker 1: playing saxophone or whatever with with mister Bungler or or
- 6:02Speaker 1: even Secret Chiefs back in the day, and then then
- 6:06Speaker 1: suddenly am just like, you know, just getting on a microphone.
- 6:11Speaker 1: It's just like it just and I got over it
- 6:13Speaker 1: pretty quickly. And I also like to steer the awkwardness
- 6:15Speaker 1: to a point too, you know, so it's like I
- 6:17Speaker 1: don't really care, and yeah, I'm just sort of That's
- 6:19Speaker 1: a good thing about being in your fifties.
- 6:21Speaker 2: You stop giving a ship about this kind of stuff
- 6:22Speaker 2: and you just do it. Yeah, exactly, exactly.
- 6:26Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 6:26Speaker 3: Yeah, you've relates the singles STF You Unhappy Now like
- 6:30Speaker 3: this Tights. I'd normally ask if I are Sonny preference types
- 6:33Speaker 3: to the album bit with your music, could it be
- 6:35Speaker 3: fucking impossible to release song with Sonny preference and ties
- 6:38Speaker 3: to the album?
- 6:40Speaker 4: Well no, I don't know.
- 6:42Speaker 1: Very sweet of you, but I think also, but I
- 6:45Speaker 1: think they are kind of like a representation of what
- 6:47Speaker 1: people are kind of getting. I would have I would
- 6:49Speaker 1: not have probably released STFU this this early because it's
- 6:54Speaker 1: a little bit of a serious song and or kind
- 6:56Speaker 1: of a bummer or so, I don't know, it just
- 6:57Speaker 1: it's it's weird, like when I that song, I don't
- 7:00Speaker 1: know if you've heard it yet or anything, but like
- 7:05Speaker 1: like something like the Alan Parsons project, like All by Myself,
- 7:08Speaker 1: like something like that is such an epic song, but
- 7:10Speaker 1: it's just very very kind of slow and am kind
- 7:14Speaker 1: of like radio just depression, you know, just like, oh
- 7:18Speaker 1: my god, this is so depressing as beautiful as it is.
- 7:21Speaker 2: So that's kind of what.
- 7:22Speaker 1: What we were going for, or I was going for
- 7:24Speaker 1: with that with STFU. But you cause, because again it's
- 7:27Speaker 1: with all these things when you like releasing singles, and
- 7:30Speaker 1: even like Bite your Tongue was released I don't know,
- 7:32Speaker 1: a couple of years ago or something, and then every
- 7:34Speaker 1: Time was released last year or something like that, or
- 7:37Speaker 1: or or maybe two I don't know.
- 7:38Speaker 2: I've probably got the years mixed up.
- 7:40Speaker 1: But it's like Bite Your Tongue would have been a
- 7:42Speaker 1: good leadoff single if it was just like to kick
- 7:45Speaker 1: kick the door open and go like here we go,
- 7:46Speaker 1: here we come, Da da da.
- 7:48Speaker 2: And it's got a lot of energy.
- 7:49Speaker 1: It's pretty catchy, and you know, it's sort of the
- 7:52Speaker 1: I feel like it's a good first thing out of
- 7:54Speaker 1: the gate. So again, I don't really understand the whole
- 7:58Speaker 1: strategy with these things of releasing things. And then I
- 8:01Speaker 1: always feel like why are we doing this? I feel
- 8:03Speaker 1: like just I'd rather just release them all at once
- 8:05Speaker 1: so people can get it, can get it in one,
- 8:08Speaker 1: you know, But I don't know.
- 8:10Speaker 2: It's it's who's to say.
- 8:12Speaker 1: It's like, uh, I I've not been doing music to
- 8:15Speaker 1: get rich or anything, and or if I have, I'm
- 8:18Speaker 1: it's a it's a it's an other failure.
- 8:21Speaker 3: The first thing you'd buy is a light shight, isn't it.
- 8:26Speaker 2: Yeah, that's what I'm doing. I'm saving up for a light. Shit. No,
- 8:29Speaker 2: it's it's funny. So it's like, uh, yeah, I don't know.
- 8:33Speaker 4: I don't I.
- 8:33Speaker 1: Can't claim to understand like any good strategies of marketing
- 8:37Speaker 1: or this or that. You know, I could say like,
- 8:39Speaker 1: oh yeah, this, this one's pretty catchy. Maybe this or
- 8:42Speaker 1: I don't know, it's just and plus I'm not going
- 8:44Speaker 1: back really and looking at analytics or comments or any
- 8:48Speaker 1: of these kinds of things ever, so so.
- 8:51Speaker 2: I have no idea.
- 8:52Speaker 1: I mean, I'm just sort of just trusting other people
- 8:55Speaker 1: to go like, you know, Okay, here's this song that
- 8:57Speaker 1: off we go. But uh yeah, I think was was
- 9:00Speaker 1: commenting about the STFU and some of the some of
- 9:04Speaker 1: the people's like response or whatever to it that he
- 9:09Speaker 1: was sort of I don't know if he was underwhelmed
- 9:10Speaker 1: or or just kind of like the and I'm going like, man,
- 9:12Speaker 1: I I can't let that stuff in.
- 9:14Speaker 2: I'm like the good or the bad. It's just like
- 9:17Speaker 2: it's because it's you know, it's all wrong.
- 9:19Speaker 1: It's it's not all wrong, but it's like it's it's correct,
- 9:22Speaker 1: but I don't I don't relevant.
- 9:25Speaker 2: Yeah, it's kind of that thing.
- 9:26Speaker 1: It's like, uh, you know, it's a it's a bit
- 9:29Speaker 1: of a funny thing, even even doing these interviews where
- 9:31Speaker 1: where you know, yeah, it's just kind of like because
- 9:34Speaker 1: people decide what they what they think or how they
- 9:36Speaker 1: feel about a thing, and they're correct and the way
- 9:39Speaker 1: they how whether if they don't if they if they
- 9:41Speaker 1: respond to it or not, or they're like yeah, this
- 9:43Speaker 1: is trash or it's brilliant, it's it's it's up, it's
- 9:47Speaker 1: up to who, you know what the listener, uh feels
- 9:50Speaker 1: with with the thing.
- 9:51Speaker 2: So once, once you've made a thing, it's just it's
- 9:53Speaker 2: out of your hands. You know.
- 9:54Speaker 1: It's like it's like dropping your kid off on there
- 9:57Speaker 1: the first day of school or something. You don't you
- 9:59Speaker 1: want to give I'm the best shot, and you want
- 10:01Speaker 1: to you want to hope that they have, you know,
- 10:02Speaker 1: some kind of sense of self escheme or something, but
- 10:06Speaker 1: you're not going to.
- 10:07Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 10:08Speaker 1: There's plenty of times I've done stuff and I'm like, ah,
- 10:10Speaker 1: this isn't my best stuff, or this is kind of weak,
- 10:12Speaker 1: or this the next thing is going to be better
- 10:14Speaker 1: or this or that, and you know, it just it's
- 10:19Speaker 1: it's not for me to say, really.
- 10:21Speaker 3: Yeah, you're getting laugh out of this, bro, because I
- 10:24Speaker 3: honestly I've never heard of you of music before this interview.
- 10:26Speaker 2: But I'll put on the album.
- 10:27Speaker 3: I'll put on the album first, have to listen because
- 10:30Speaker 3: that's what I do. And I have my headphones on
- 10:32Speaker 3: because the kids are here, and I'm getting through about
- 10:34Speaker 3: the first couple of songs and I've messaged my mate
- 10:36Speaker 3: who's writing to you guys, and I'm gone, pretty weird
- 10:39Speaker 3: this stuff, isn't it? And He's gone, yeah, man, it's
- 10:40Speaker 3: both to be weird. I'm like right here, and I
- 10:42Speaker 3: kept going with it, and then I've took the earphones
- 10:44Speaker 3: out for some reason and it sounded great. It's like
- 10:47Speaker 3: there's a little slight glitch in the earphones that I
- 10:49Speaker 3: didn't realize it was there, and it was like, take
- 10:52Speaker 3: a little bit stuttery and a little bit.
- 10:53Speaker 2: Oh shit, And that's what I was thinking, is a
- 10:55Speaker 2: weird parts of it.
- 10:56Speaker 3: I'm like, this is supposed to be like that, and
- 10:57Speaker 3: I expect they have often.
- 10:58Speaker 2: It's like, that's funny. So you thought you thought that was.
- 11:04Speaker 3: Music because I've never heard it before. I thought that
- 11:06Speaker 3: would actually be the way because I know a little
- 11:09Speaker 3: pace out, but it was.
- 11:10Speaker 2: Oh that's funny.
- 11:11Speaker 1: Yeah, no, I know you, I know what you're talking about,
- 11:13Speaker 1: like that thing with like the jack of the thing.
- 11:14Speaker 2: And then and then it's sort of it's like it
- 11:16Speaker 2: sounds yeah.
- 11:17Speaker 1: It's well, you know, it's funny because and then also
- 11:21Speaker 1: with you know, having been associated with or being associated
- 11:24Speaker 1: with mister Bungle, it's like people are sort of kind
- 11:27Speaker 1: of can sort of be expecting anything.
- 11:29Speaker 2: I think on some.
- 11:29Speaker 1: Lovel especially you know, after what sort of disco Volante
- 11:32Speaker 1: and things were like that, we're just like going like
- 11:34Speaker 1: what the hell? And then it's just like and then
- 11:36Speaker 1: you realize like, oh, this is intentional kind of messing
- 11:38Speaker 1: with the with the listener or confounding expectations.
- 11:41Speaker 2: So that's that's funny. And it sounds like.
- 11:44Speaker 1: You know, you were probably like, ah, this is this
- 11:46Speaker 1: is this would be what what these some some guys
- 11:48Speaker 1: from this kind of like I was.
- 11:49Speaker 3: Thinking, I'm thinking that it's a little bit weird and
- 11:52Speaker 3: I'm not sure if I like it or not. And
- 11:54Speaker 3: that is what made about it. When I got it,
- 11:56Speaker 3: When I got a properly, it was really fucking good.
- 11:59Speaker 5: Cool.
- 11:59Speaker 1: Thanks, thanks, So yeah, I know it's not it's not
- 12:01Speaker 1: gonna be everybody's cup of tea. And then on some level,
- 12:04Speaker 1: like I'll just say it really quickly and maybe I've
- 12:06Speaker 1: said this before, and so I apologize. People have to
- 12:08Speaker 1: listen to me and repeat my stories like I'm like
- 12:10Speaker 1: a broken record. But it's like I have friends at work,
- 12:12Speaker 1: you know, sometimes we'll be we'll be working and then
- 12:15Speaker 1: they'll you know, they'll they'll look at me and then
- 12:17Speaker 1: you know, whether it's like and then and then or
- 12:20Speaker 1: I had this this one co worker and he's like,
- 12:21Speaker 1: he's like, all you have to do is just write
- 12:22Speaker 1: a hit song. Just write a hit song, and it's
- 12:24Speaker 1: all good. You're just good to go. And I'm like, oh, yeah,
- 12:26Speaker 1: that's that's it.
- 12:27Speaker 2: You just write a hit song.
- 12:28Speaker 5: And so.
- 12:29Speaker 1: But but with a couple of these on this album,
- 12:31Speaker 1: I sort of thought like, yeah, we'll just we'll just
- 12:34Speaker 1: kind of like and it not that I'm I'm I'm
- 12:35Speaker 1: going into it thinking that. I'm thinking it's more like
- 12:37Speaker 1: a kind of an afterthought where I'm going like, oh
- 12:39Speaker 1: this this actually sounds like a hit song, or there's
- 12:41Speaker 1: something that could be in it in an alternate universe
- 12:44Speaker 1: or something. So you know, it's kind of fun to
- 12:47Speaker 1: just steer directly towards that. I just kind of just
- 12:49Speaker 1: see what can come out, you know. But whether or
- 12:51Speaker 1: not it's it's the full you know, it's gonna be
- 12:55Speaker 1: the thing that we go towards on a on a
- 12:57Speaker 1: on a full time basis. I kind of doubt, but uh,
- 12:59Speaker 1: I mean, I don't know, We'll see how we go
- 13:01Speaker 1: but you know, it's but it's kind of funny because
- 13:03Speaker 1: like knowing like what you're what a little bit of
- 13:06Speaker 1: your what I'm looking at heavy, you know, and kind
- 13:08Speaker 1: of like are you sort of.
- 13:09Speaker 2: A metal kind of like yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 13:12Speaker 1: So it's just like I realized, like on some level
- 13:14Speaker 1: of people will be like, yeah, this is you know,
- 13:15Speaker 1: this isn't metal, So what are we bothering?
- 13:18Speaker 2: Are wasting our time here for something?
- 13:19Speaker 1: Even though I do appreciate metal, you know, and it's
- 13:23Speaker 1: and and probably more a fan of it than some
- 13:25Speaker 1: other people in the band, you know, not my bass
- 13:29Speaker 1: player probably, but uh yeah, So it's just kind of
- 13:31Speaker 1: funny and like I'm constantly trying to get Angus to
- 13:34Speaker 1: kind of like smash that distortion pedal or.
- 13:37Speaker 2: Whatever, you know, and then he's he's just like I
- 13:39Speaker 2: don't know.
- 13:39Speaker 1: He's going for some other sounds sometimes, but uh yeah,
- 13:42Speaker 1: it's uh.
- 13:44Speaker 2: I don't know, I guess on some of them.
- 13:45Speaker 1: I'm aware that like it's not going to be for everybody,
- 13:47Speaker 1: this particular thing, but it does it does kind of
- 13:49Speaker 1: have a lot of stuff in there that could maybe
- 13:51Speaker 1: appeal to people, But I don't know, shit, I don't
- 13:54Speaker 1: have any illusions that it's gonna it's gonna do do
- 13:58Speaker 1: great things or anything necessarily. I'm I'm kind of meat,
- 14:01Speaker 1: you know, what is the word cautiously optimistic, But you know,
- 14:05Speaker 1: I'm just I'm just lucky to be able to still
- 14:08Speaker 1: do it or have the be able to body it
- 14:10Speaker 1: enough to sort of do this still.
- 14:11Speaker 2: So that's on it goes, you.
- 14:13Speaker 3: Know, Yeah, we'll put it this way, bro, Like, now
- 14:16Speaker 3: I'm going to go. I want to go back and
- 14:17Speaker 3: listen to it again after I've spoken You're like, now
- 14:19Speaker 3: I've got to know you a little bit more and
- 14:21Speaker 3: I know a bit more of particularly, I want to
- 14:23Speaker 3: listen to it again. I enjoyed it the first time,
- 14:24Speaker 3: but yeah, cool, different experience. I think, listen to it
- 14:27Speaker 3: again when you know about the band. So I'm looking
- 14:30Speaker 3: forward to that. So yeah, awesome that for me and
- 14:32Speaker 3: I'm a metal episodes, You've done something right.
- 14:35Speaker 2: Good idea.
- 14:38Speaker 3: Well, you mentioned Daddy coming back into the band, bro, Like,
- 14:41Speaker 3: you haven't actually been with him since Californication Misterbong in
- 14:45Speaker 3: two thousand. So what was it like getting back together
- 14:48Speaker 3: again creatively? Like you just slip straight back into a groove.
- 14:50Speaker 3: What did you have to work on that after so long.
- 14:53Speaker 1: Well, you know, it's funny because I've I've Danny has
- 14:55Speaker 1: lived here almost as long as I have, not in Melbourne,
- 14:57Speaker 1: but i mean, like you know, in Australia, and uh,
- 15:01Speaker 1: I could have used him, you know, I could have
- 15:04Speaker 1: used him a long time ago as far as getting
- 15:06Speaker 1: involved in music, just just even if just doing it
- 15:09Speaker 1: by correspondence. But I don't know, I've kind of wanted
- 15:13Speaker 1: to leave him alone and just kind of let him,
- 15:15Speaker 1: let him do what he's doing in his own life,
- 15:16Speaker 1: you know, up there. And then by the time he
- 15:18Speaker 1: got down here, it was it just became this kind
- 15:20Speaker 1: of like he's so good, you know, and he's he's
- 15:24Speaker 1: he really is my like one of my all time
- 15:27Speaker 1: favorite drummers. And then I and it's just it's just
- 15:30Speaker 1: kind of this thing where you get to play with
- 15:32Speaker 1: the guy and he's he's so good and he makes
- 15:34Speaker 1: the music feel so good that it just becomes a
- 15:37Speaker 1: no brainer where you're like, yeah, we got to do this, man,
- 15:39Speaker 1: We've got to just get him in here and get
- 15:41Speaker 1: him get him on these recordings because he's he's a
- 15:43Speaker 1: very thoughtful musician and he uh, you know, he loves
- 15:46Speaker 1: to get in the arranging side of things, and he
- 15:48Speaker 1: makes the music definitely less boring and less predictable in
- 15:52Speaker 1: a lot of ways. And it's just he's got such
- 15:54Speaker 1: a great feel. But you know, I I haven't dealt
- 15:58Speaker 1: I haven't really worked with Dan insofar as like as
- 16:01Speaker 1: a band leader in a band leader kind of like
- 16:03Speaker 1: role to where I'm like telling him what to do
- 16:06Speaker 1: or how to do a thing or or whatever.
- 16:08Speaker 2: So but it is, it is. It is just like
- 16:11Speaker 2: coming home in a lot of ways.
- 16:12Speaker 1: And it's it's just, you know, he has such a
- 16:14Speaker 1: great feel that it's just it was it was really easy,
- 16:17Speaker 1: and he made all the music that much easier. And
- 16:19Speaker 1: he's his attention to detail and his and his uh
- 16:22Speaker 1: you know, his thoughtful kind of like choices. It's just like, yeah,
- 16:26Speaker 1: it's just it's not like you're dealing with somebody that
- 16:29Speaker 1: you don't some younger musicians that you don't really know
- 16:31Speaker 1: or whatever.
- 16:31Speaker 2: It's like he just he kind of gets it very quickly.
- 16:34Speaker 1: And he's he's also one of these guys that that
- 16:36Speaker 1: saves his energy for like the live performances where you're
- 16:40Speaker 1: just sometimes you might be like, man, I you know,
- 16:42Speaker 1: I easy to hate it harder or this or that,
- 16:44Speaker 1: and then by the time you get to the gig,
- 16:46Speaker 1: he's smashing the shit out of it and just going
- 16:47Speaker 1: for gold. And you're just like this, he's like one
- 16:49Speaker 1: of these he's like a base like a pro baseball
- 16:51Speaker 1: player that just like slacks off in the practice where
- 16:53Speaker 1: you're like, shit, I hope he comes through for us
- 16:55Speaker 1: in the game.
- 16:56Speaker 2: And then he does. You know, You're just like, yeah,
- 16:58Speaker 2: this guy like he knows what tell like turn it.
- 17:01Speaker 1: On and and uh so it's yeah, it's been like
- 17:04Speaker 1: a real homecoming kind of feeling with this with this guy.
- 17:06Speaker 1: And I, you know, we we we're not like it's
- 17:10Speaker 1: not lost on us, how how lucky we are to
- 17:12Speaker 1: kind of have this guy, uh playing with us right now.
- 17:15Speaker 2: So I'm but he's also like a cat.
- 17:17Speaker 4: You know.
- 17:17Speaker 2: I don't want to. I don't want to scare him away,
- 17:19Speaker 2: and I.
- 17:20Speaker 1: Don't want you got nine chances, yes see, I hadn't
- 17:25Speaker 1: thought of that.
- 17:26Speaker 2: But it's like there's a thing where I don't want to.
- 17:29Speaker 2: I don't want to.
- 17:30Speaker 1: I have so much respect for him that I kind
- 17:32Speaker 1: of like, I kind of you know, I don't come
- 17:34Speaker 1: I don't come into too too hot with him, I
- 17:38Speaker 1: kind of try to kind of ease into things, and
- 17:40Speaker 1: I try to to gently kind of like uh, you know,
- 17:43Speaker 1: persuade him and maneuver maneuver him that way.
- 17:46Speaker 2: But so far, so good, especially now with him in
- 17:50Speaker 2: the band.
- 17:50Speaker 3: Like you consider like unlock an extension or the next
- 17:55Speaker 3: chapter of Mister Bunkle or I I'm based completely well.
- 17:59Speaker 1: It is it's own beasts in a lot of ways,
- 18:02Speaker 1: but but absolutely any of the songs that you hear
- 18:05Speaker 1: Umlah playing like in my perfect world, I would I
- 18:08Speaker 1: would you know, steer them over towards the Bungle world
- 18:11Speaker 1: and then and have the have them go through that
- 18:14Speaker 1: sort of like you know, uh that channel. So and
- 18:19Speaker 1: it's funny and I've had I've had a few people
- 18:21Speaker 1: tell me that, oh, this actually sounds more like what
- 18:24Speaker 1: you know Bungle left off kind of doing with California
- 18:26Speaker 1: and these kinds of things. Then then you know the
- 18:30Speaker 1: the Bunny Bungle that that it comes out and does
- 18:33Speaker 1: the thrash, the thrash metal of raging wrath kind of thing, so.
- 18:36Speaker 2: That like you know, and so it's an interesting thing.
- 18:38Speaker 1: Like I'm not sure if it's like if there's like
- 18:40Speaker 1: this this subconscious thing of me trying to to do
- 18:43Speaker 1: music that that, you know, in the kind of bunk
- 18:45Speaker 1: mister bungle sort of way, which I don't really think
- 18:47Speaker 1: is the case, but I I've been definitely influenced by
- 18:50Speaker 1: those guys, you know, those those were those I was
- 18:53Speaker 1: always like pinching myself when I was with that, you know,
- 18:56Speaker 1: with that outfit, going like, this is the most talented
- 18:59Speaker 1: music like now musicians I've ever you know, played with.
- 19:02Speaker 2: And then Mike Patton, you know, it's just like it's
- 19:05Speaker 2: just like, you know, that voice, Like I remember one time.
- 19:08Speaker 1: I remember one time during the Disco Volante era, he
- 19:11Speaker 1: walked into a room and just said my name and
- 19:14Speaker 1: then I nearly any but he said it with that
- 19:16Speaker 1: without like a bear and it was just like kin
- 19:17Speaker 1: of like and of course that doesn't really convey the power,
- 19:21Speaker 1: but it was like literally just like made me fall up.
- 19:23Speaker 2: Out of my seat because he had such such power
- 19:26Speaker 2: with that voice. I think, yeah, in.
- 19:29Speaker 1: A lot of ways, Well, in some ways, I'm kind
- 19:33Speaker 1: of trying. I'm trying to do stuff that I wish
- 19:36Speaker 1: that band we're sort.
- 19:38Speaker 2: Of we're doing right now with with Umlah.
- 19:40Speaker 1: You know, I'm kind of like or the things that,
- 19:43Speaker 1: you know what I mean, I I it's maybe that
- 19:45Speaker 1: conveys the whole idea there. But yeah, even that very
- 19:49Speaker 1: first Dumla album back in two thousand and nine, I
- 19:53Speaker 1: think it was I was like, you know, in a
- 19:55Speaker 1: perfect world with everything going just the way I want
- 19:59Speaker 1: it U or would hope for it, would like those
- 20:02Speaker 1: would have been on a neck on that next you know,
- 20:04Speaker 1: Mister Bungle proper sort of album, some of my some
- 20:08Speaker 1: of my better ideas off of that first Umlaut thing.
- 20:11Speaker 1: So so yeah, my heart is still is you know,
- 20:14Speaker 1: it's still kind of like trying to create things that
- 20:17Speaker 1: they would might be worthy of, like the Mister Bungle world.
- 20:21Speaker 1: But you know, until I can kind of really you know,
- 20:26Speaker 1: manipulate or persuade that thing to happen, I'm I'm we're
- 20:28Speaker 1: doing it in umeloud.
- 20:32Speaker 3: I'm not saying I like it mixes jazz as pop.
- 20:35Speaker 3: This is I've ont gotten metal. There's electronics. Basically whatever
- 20:38Speaker 3: the fuck you feel like doing all the time doesn't
- 20:40Speaker 3: do amusing. But how hard doesn't he get any form
- 20:43Speaker 3: of balance at all in the creative process with so
- 20:45Speaker 3: much going on?
- 20:47Speaker 1: I don't know, I guess it's it's it's uh, well,
- 20:50Speaker 1: we've got Angus, the guitarist is a very as a
- 20:53Speaker 1: very strong kind of like production kind of like sense,
- 20:57Speaker 1: and so.
- 20:57Speaker 2: You know, and also we're always I'm with my music
- 21:00Speaker 2: or with.
- 21:00Speaker 1: My songwriting and whatever, or certainly with the books and whatever.
- 21:04Speaker 1: I always say I'm always crapping onto Angus, whether it's
- 21:06Speaker 1: the mix or the whatever. I'm always saying, like addition
- 21:09Speaker 1: by subtraction, and you know, he's so it's like the
- 21:13Speaker 1: idea of whatever doesn't work, just get the fuck out
- 21:16Speaker 1: of there. It's like and letting the music breathe, like
- 21:19Speaker 1: I never I think I still struggle sometimes to let
- 21:22Speaker 1: the music breathe or kind of like let some space
- 21:24Speaker 1: happen in there where it's not just trying to do
- 21:26Speaker 1: some lick at the end of a phrase or a
- 21:27Speaker 1: fill at the end of a phrase or whatever. It's
- 21:29Speaker 1: just kind of like letting making it more sort of
- 21:32Speaker 1: minimalistic on some levels.
- 21:35Speaker 2: I don't know. It's like because because in a lot
- 21:37Speaker 2: of ways.
- 21:38Speaker 1: This this I don't really feel like this, this album
- 21:40Speaker 1: is too much of a stretch, like genre wise, I
- 21:43Speaker 1: think it's not.
- 21:44Speaker 2: It doesn't it kind of it kind of shifts gears
- 21:45Speaker 2: a little bit, but you know, not too much.
- 21:49Speaker 1: It's not too much kind of, it's not The songs
- 21:51Speaker 1: aren't necessarily as schizophrenic as other things that we've done
- 21:53Speaker 1: in the past, maybe on some levels where it's just like,
- 21:56Speaker 1: you know, a hard left turn and then the listener's
- 21:59Speaker 1: just like wait what you know, what was I just
- 22:00Speaker 1: listening to? It's like these are kind of more more
- 22:03Speaker 1: just like unapologetic, straight down the middle, like Okay, here's this,
- 22:07Speaker 1: here's this kind of rock sort of song happening, and
- 22:10Speaker 1: maybe there'll be some nice little elements thrown in there.
- 22:14Speaker 2: How hard is it? I don't know.
- 22:15Speaker 1: I guess like, yeah, it's not really that hard, because
- 22:19Speaker 1: we do have we do sort of. It's it's it's
- 22:22Speaker 1: definitely a democratic kind of situation where it's like if
- 22:24Speaker 1: something isn't working, people will speak up. They're not just
- 22:28Speaker 1: like I'm not They're not just sort of listening to
- 22:29Speaker 1: me as a dictator and going like, now this is
- 22:31Speaker 1: this is what he wrote, this is what he wants,
- 22:33Speaker 1: so this is what this.
- 22:34Speaker 2: Is how it has to be.
- 22:35Speaker 1: It's like if something doesn't seem to work, and we
- 22:38Speaker 1: sniff it out pretty quickly and then we sort of
- 22:40Speaker 1: tamp it down, or change a thing, or do a
- 22:42Speaker 1: different thing, or even just throw a thing away. Like
- 22:44Speaker 1: you know, there's been times that we've been doing songs
- 22:46Speaker 1: and I'm like, yeah, this is way, this is is
- 22:48Speaker 1: interesting to us to play it. But you know, sometimes
- 22:51Speaker 1: I have that criticism with something like jazz or something,
- 22:54Speaker 1: which is you know, I always wish that I could
- 22:56Speaker 1: I could have the facility or the the sophistication or
- 22:59Speaker 1: whatever or to play that kind of stuff. But also
- 23:02Speaker 1: I kind of can't stand listening to to most of it.
- 23:05Speaker 2: You know.
- 23:05Speaker 1: It's like except for like some of the classic stuff,
- 23:07Speaker 1: you know, you know, so it's like this whole thing
- 23:10Speaker 1: of it's yeah, there's there's there's definitely sometimes when we
- 23:14Speaker 1: delve into stuff that is like it's it's funner to
- 23:17Speaker 1: do than it is to listen to.
- 23:19Speaker 2: And that's that.
- 23:20Speaker 1: And if you if we kind of come to that
- 23:22Speaker 1: realization around it, then we're like, yeah, maybe this isn't
- 23:24Speaker 1: the best thing. It's like, this is really fun to do,
- 23:27Speaker 1: but this is like the audience might be sitting there
- 23:29Speaker 1: going like all right, okay, okay, uh, waiting for it
- 23:32Speaker 1: to get to change or to do a different thing
- 23:35Speaker 1: or whatever. It might be so so it's without being
- 23:38Speaker 1: too much kind of like pandering to an audience kind
- 23:41Speaker 1: of thing. It's like we're just trying to to to really,
- 23:45Speaker 1: I don't know, it's it's, uh, yeah, We're We're just
- 23:49Speaker 1: we're just doing the best we can with what we've got,
- 23:50Speaker 1: and and and some of these songs, it's just like
- 23:54Speaker 1: I'm sort of I'm on some levels, I'm trying to.
- 23:56Speaker 2: I'm I'm I'm I'm.
- 23:58Speaker 1: Getting a bit of fun out of like tricky Danny
- 24:00Speaker 1: into playing some of these things that he might not
- 24:02Speaker 1: or something he might be like, this is so cringey,
- 24:04Speaker 1: Like I you know, I'd rather not do this, but
- 24:06Speaker 1: I'm like it's kind of fun to kind of have
- 24:07Speaker 1: Danny turn Danny into like a pop pop musician on
- 24:11Speaker 1: some level where you know, or to play a straight
- 24:13Speaker 1: thing or a consistent thing for longer than he you know.
- 24:17Speaker 1: But but Stuff's change is definitely live. It's like he's
- 24:20Speaker 1: always messing with stuff, and he's always he's always kind
- 24:22Speaker 1: of like.
- 24:24Speaker 2: Going along with it but still toying with us a
- 24:26Speaker 2: little bit, you know.
- 24:27Speaker 1: And and that's what's great about him is that, you know,
- 24:29Speaker 1: this is just if you've ever seen him play drums,
- 24:32Speaker 1: you know, live. It's like he's putting on his an
- 24:35Speaker 1: entire show, just in in in the way he's he's
- 24:38Speaker 1: doing what he's doing back there, and you like you
- 24:40Speaker 1: might be like, oh, he's not doing anything, and then
- 24:42Speaker 1: you you've actually missed something you can do. Whether he's
- 24:45Speaker 1: like change is a simple like mid song or some
- 24:47Speaker 1: kind of thing, or like it's just doing some kind
- 24:49Speaker 1: of crazy, it's just it's always entertaining and always like
- 24:52Speaker 1: uh yeah, it's always just yeah, man, he's like, I
- 24:57Speaker 1: don't know, it's funny. He's he keeps us, he keeps
- 25:00Speaker 1: us endlessly entertained and.
- 25:04Speaker 2: So but yeah, but this this this definitely feels like
- 25:06Speaker 2: a very an accessible album. I feel like, you know,
- 25:09Speaker 2: it's like if somebody was like if this was.
- 25:12Speaker 1: Their their first kind of dipping the toe into like
- 25:14Speaker 1: listening to this band, if they're aware of it or
- 25:17Speaker 1: they care, I think it's a pretty it's a pretty
- 25:20Speaker 1: welcoming thing. And it's like, you know, for people that
- 25:23Speaker 1: just like music to be played and not kind of
- 25:26Speaker 1: like be trying to be too clever, kind of messing
- 25:28Speaker 1: around with them too much and and toying with the
- 25:31Speaker 1: listener and challenging the listener. It's it's it's not really
- 25:34Speaker 1: doing that. It's kind of just like just doing like
- 25:38Speaker 1: fat kind of like chunky, you know, Like I don't know.
- 25:43Speaker 1: To me, I feel like it's very satisfying kind of
- 25:45Speaker 1: music to play and listen to, you know, on some levels.
- 25:49Speaker 1: So I don't know what, but we're we're we're really
- 25:51Speaker 1: excited for people to hear the whole album, you know,
- 25:53Speaker 1: all in it, in its entirety, you know, rather than
- 25:57Speaker 1: just like these single, these little single things of just like, man,
- 26:00Speaker 1: you're killing me with these singles.
- 26:04Speaker 2: I want to hear just the album. I want to
- 26:05Speaker 2: like get into it, and I'm doing that, yeah, like live.
- 26:09Speaker 1: That album experience and then and then set it aside
- 26:12Speaker 1: and then make it make it a judgment on the
- 26:14Speaker 1: thing as a whole, you know, instead of just these
- 26:16Speaker 1: kind of.
- 26:16Speaker 2: Like hey, you want to you want to? Yeah, how
- 26:19Speaker 2: do you like me wearing these shoes? Okay? How do
- 26:21Speaker 2: you like me wearing this shirt? And then it is
- 26:23Speaker 2: it's just like going, like what are we doing? Can
- 26:24Speaker 2: we just like yeah? But that's that's what it's. That's
- 26:28Speaker 2: what these streaming things do.
- 26:30Speaker 4: Now.
- 26:30Speaker 1: It's like they just give you a little taste or
- 26:33Speaker 1: a little teaser, and then it's like, yeah, in a
- 26:36Speaker 1: perfect world, I wouldn't have released bite your Tongue or
- 26:38Speaker 1: every time. Yeah, you know, I would have been like
- 26:40Speaker 1: I would have loved people just hear that on an album,
- 26:42Speaker 1: just go holy shit, you know, like this is cool
- 26:44Speaker 1: or whatever or this is crap or you know, please don't.
- 26:48Speaker 2: Ever do music again. I don't know, I'll be like, Okay,
- 26:52Speaker 2: I'll take that on. I'll take it that under consideration.
- 26:54Speaker 2: Under consideration, well, I would.
- 26:56Speaker 3: Say maybe in the first time I'm spokeing with you
- 26:58Speaker 3: and listening to music, do you keep music? Seeing music?
- 27:00Speaker 4: Do you keep doing again?
- 27:01Speaker 3: Because very enjoyable album Roman. It will be available for
- 27:05Speaker 3: the world on twenty fifth of July. It's called Desola
- 27:08Speaker 3: And I can't recommend the people that know the band
- 27:10Speaker 3: because I don't either, but I liked it so banks
- 27:13Speaker 3: so much.
- 27:13Speaker 6: Man, Oh you the world worry now we love speed it.
- 27:47Speaker 5: Are you're the world?
- 27:51Speaker 4: Now? It doesn't mean I you the word now, we're
- 28:00Speaker 4: fuck it.
- 28:03Speaker 6: I you the way?
- 28:07Speaker 4: No, don't they need dad got.
- 28:39Speaker 5: Loosen who? I don't know the other man.
- 29:26Speaker 4: Now walk? I don't other way now it's done.
- 29:38Speaker 2: I don't.
- 29:42Speaker 4: Now. It's as.
- 29:46Speaker 2: I do.
- 29:50Speaker 4: Now. It doesn't mean
- 30:10Speaker 6: Sp
