- 0:26Hello, and thank you for listening to the
- 0:27Becker's Healthcare podcast. I'm Elizabeth Gregersen here recording
- 0:31live from our
- 0:33Becker's annual meeting, and I am excited to
- 0:36welcome Sunil Devani from Atlantic Health System to
- 0:39our podcast today. Thank you for joining me.
- 0:42Could you give us a brief introduction of
- 0:44yourself, your role, and and the scope of
- 0:46your organization?
- 0:47Sure. Thank you for having me.
- 0:49I am Sunil Dadlani. I'm executive vice president,
- 0:52chief information and digital transformation officer, and chief
- 0:55cybersecurity officer at Atlantic Health System.
- 0:58Atlantic Health System is nationally recognized one of
- 1:00the leading integrated health care system with eight
- 1:03hospitals and more than 500
- 1:05sites of care
- 1:07operating in the East Coast with, on New
- 1:09Jersey, Pennsylvania,
- 1:11and metropolitan areas of New York.
- 1:14Thank you so much. To kick off our
- 1:16conversation today, I'd love to talk about what's
- 1:19currently commanding most of your attention as a
- 1:22leader.
- 1:23At present, what is command what is getting
- 1:25my attention is the rise of agentic AI.
- 1:28With the capacity and capability of AI rising
- 1:31exponentially,
- 1:32we are now at a stage where we
- 1:33are seeing a paradigm shift
- 1:35from AI that can predict to now
- 1:39generating content and summarization, and here we are
- 1:41with agentic AI,
- 1:43which can actually take actions.
- 1:45And in health care where you take actions,
- 1:48that's where the maximum value is driven. At
- 1:51the same time, you have highest risk that
- 1:54rises up with the action, which is autonomous
- 1:56and automated.
- 1:58Perfect. And, you know, in a year marked
- 2:00by such rapid change,
- 2:03has there been a recent decision or a
- 2:05pivot required
- 2:07that required the most leadership conviction from you,
- 2:10particularly when it came to aligning people, resources,
- 2:13or capabilities?
- 2:15That's a great question, and I'm now
- 2:17looking and challenging the decision or or the
- 2:20direction
- 2:21where scale
- 2:22leads to
- 2:24leads to capabilities.
- 2:25Mhmm.
- 2:26And speed leads to capabilities.
- 2:28And I'm really questioning that assumption
- 2:31because speed does not lead to scalability.
- 2:33Mhmm. What we have seen is
- 2:36when momentum is driven by
- 2:38driven by uncontrolled and,
- 2:41uncontrolled pilots and AI, it creates fragmentation.
- 2:44It creates more chaos.
- 2:46In a in a nutshell, if I have
- 2:47to put,
- 2:48momentum without governance is a chaos and fragmentation,
- 2:52whereas governance without momentum is stagnation.
- 2:56Absolutely. And you talked about that moment kind
- 2:58of challenging your assumptions.
- 3:00What did it change about how you approach
- 3:02the decision making
- 3:03talent or maybe organizational
- 3:05readiness of today?
- 3:07This is part of our journey as we
- 3:09navigate and transit
- 3:10transition from AI
- 3:13enabled company to to being a AI
- 3:16native organization.
- 3:18What it means is
- 3:19saying no to fragmented
- 3:21pilots which create
- 3:23pilot paralysis, and we have seen over and
- 3:25over again that organizations struggle with pilots and
- 3:28they are never able to scale at the
- 3:29enterprise level. So this is a decision that
- 3:32we are pivoting very consciously
- 3:34where we are forming and doubling down in
- 3:36terms of creating a very structured,
- 3:40strong foundation. When I say about foundation, that
- 3:42means
- 3:43having a strong governance,
- 3:45having a very robust
- 3:47digital infrastructure backbone,
- 3:49having a single intake process,
- 3:51prioritizing
- 3:51use cases,
- 3:53and data fabrics and artificial intelligence framework, which
- 3:56is SAFE. SAFE is essentially
- 3:59secure,
- 4:00accountable,
- 4:01fair, and explainable framework.
- 4:03I can see how that directly ties to
- 4:05kind of challenging the chaos, right, that you
- 4:07spoke about earlier.
- 4:09When you think about the forces that are
- 4:12reshaping health care right now,
- 4:14where do you believe leaders need to be
- 4:17more decisive,
- 4:18especially when it comes to balancing
- 4:20speed like you talked about risk and having
- 4:22those right teams in place?
- 4:25So as I I as I see, there
- 4:27are several forces that are creating disruptions in
- 4:29the health care. Be it aging population,
- 4:32demographic shift, cost of care going up, the
- 4:36rising expectation from health care consumerization,
- 4:39margin pressure,
- 4:41then we have a workforce,
- 4:43shortages,
- 4:44then also reimbursement challenges.
- 4:47So all these
- 4:48forces are really disrupting the health care landscape.
- 4:52Let me talk about how the health care
- 4:53of the future will look like. Health care
- 4:55of the future will be, first of all,
- 4:57real time, 24 by seven, always on. What
- 5:01does that mean? That means health care will
- 5:03be more predictive,
- 5:05more prescriptive,
- 5:06more preventive, and more
- 5:08precision based, and it can be hyper personalized.
- 5:11And the way we are handling this change
- 5:13and navigating and reimagining the health care and
- 5:16realigning our workforce is, again,
- 5:18taking a very cognitive
- 5:20approach about
- 5:22what matters most to the organization.
- 5:24We are laser focused on looking at things,
- 5:27looking at the problems,
- 5:28and not starting with algorithm or technology or
- 5:31or vendors. We are starting from the problems.
- 5:33What are the problems that matters most to
- 5:36the organization?
- 5:37And we are taking it looking at it
- 5:38from the system lens
- 5:40so that we are able to drive maximum
- 5:43impact or value to the to the organization.
- 5:45Absolutely. And when we talk about those forces
- 5:48kind of reshaping the industry,
- 5:50I feel like uncertainty has become the norm.
- 5:53So what leadership habit or mindset has been
- 5:56most critical for you
- 5:58in keeping your organization and your people moving
- 6:01forward?
- 6:02First of all, you you stated it rightly.
- 6:04Unpredictability
- 6:05and uncertainty
- 6:06is a norm. It is not an exception.
- 6:08Right. And when we operate in an environment
- 6:11where there there is too much change,
- 6:14last thing organization or the people want is
- 6:17reactive leadership, which is reacting to every noise.
- 6:21It creates more confusion, it creates more chaos.
- 6:24More important is the leadership mindset has to
- 6:27be more reflective
- 6:29when where you can lead with values, principle,
- 6:32and mission
- 6:33driven by the clarity
- 6:34where the organization is headed and make some
- 6:37decisions and operate with the with the utmost
- 6:39transparency
- 6:41and having that conversations with the entire organization
- 6:44and be ready to pivot. Yeah. With the
- 6:47continuous feedback and refinement
- 6:49and learning,
- 6:50we are able to make the organization very
- 6:52agile, and we are not afraid to pivot.
- 6:54Perfect. And I couldn't have you here without
- 6:56asking about your area of expertise. So in
- 6:59a world of
- 7:01cyber threats and AI acceleration,
- 7:04what does digital and operational resilience
- 7:06truly mean for health care organizations?
- 7:09First of all, when we talk about digital
- 7:11and operational resiliency for our health care system,
- 7:13it is more than keeping the systems up
- 7:16or keeping the performance
- 7:18high on the system point of view.
- 7:20Disruption is going to happen. Cyber events are
- 7:23going to happen. They are inevitable.
- 7:25Residency in in terms of health care is
- 7:28capability and capacity of the organization to continue
- 7:31delivering on its mission. That is providing
- 7:34an an uninterrupted
- 7:36care to the to the communities we serve.
- 7:38That's what we call resiliency as a as
- 7:40a health care system. Absolutely.
- 7:42And for my last question,
- 7:44I'd love to hear what advice you would
- 7:47give to other health care leaders just based
- 7:49on your experience,
- 7:50in the industry so far. I would leave
- 7:52you with with few nuggets. So first of
- 7:54all, for the leaders, don't confuse
- 7:57activity with transformation.
- 8:00Second, transformation is not a project or a
- 8:02onetime initiative.
- 8:04It's a lifelong journey. It's a journey.
- 8:07I would also say that have a continuous
- 8:09learning mindset
- 8:11because your
- 8:12AI is really redefining the work.
- 8:15When I say work, it redefines the roles.
- 8:17When the roles get redefined, it redefines the
- 8:20responsibility,
- 8:21and, ultimately, it redefines the skill set.
- 8:24So your current skill set will get obsolete
- 8:26very fast.
- 8:27So have upskilling,
- 8:29continuously getting engaged in AI projects,
- 8:32and learning, and having a curious mindset is
- 8:35a key trait for for
- 8:37not only surviving, but thriving in the era
- 8:39of AI. Absolutely. And I think that ties
- 8:41right back to when you said pivoting. Right?
- 8:43You gotta be able to pivot with that
- 8:45uncertainty.
- 8:46Well, that's all the time we have for
- 8:47today, but thank you so much for joining
- 8:49me. Thank you so much for having me.
- 8:51Perfect. And to all our listeners, you can
