- 0:00Speaker 1: Chapter fourteen. The Buddha, the awakened, he whose conquest is
- 0:09Speaker 1: not conquered again, into whose conquest no one in this
- 0:13Speaker 1: world enters. By what track can you lead him? The awakened,
- 0:19Speaker 1: the omniscient, the trackless, He whom no desire, with its
- 0:26Speaker 1: snares and poisons, can lead astray? By what track can
- 0:31Speaker 1: you lead him? The awakened, the omniscient, the trackless. Even
- 0:40Speaker 1: the gods envy those who are awakened and not forgetful,
- 0:44Speaker 1: who are given to meditation, who are wise, and who
- 0:49Speaker 1: delight in the repose of retirement from the world. Difficult
- 0:56Speaker 1: to obtain is the conception of Menficult is the life
- 1:01Speaker 1: of mortals. Difficult is the hearing of the true law.
- 1:07Speaker 1: Difficult is the birth of the awakened, the attainment of buddhahood.
- 1:14Speaker 1: Not to commit any sin, to do good, and to
- 1:19Speaker 1: purify one's mind. That is the teaching of all the awakened.
- 1:27Speaker 1: The awakened call patience the highest penance, long suffering the
- 1:32Speaker 1: highest nirvana. For he is not an anchorite propagita who
- 1:39Speaker 1: strikes others. He is not an ascetic schromanna who insults others.
- 1:48Speaker 1: Not to blame, not to strike, to live restrained under
- 1:53Speaker 1: the law, to be moderate in eating, to sleep and
- 1:58Speaker 1: sit alone, and to dwell on the highest thoughts. This
- 2:04Speaker 1: is the teaching of the awakened. There is no satisfying lusts,
- 2:12Speaker 1: even by a shower of gold pieces. He who knows
- 2:16Speaker 1: that lusts have a short taste and calls pain, he
- 2:20Speaker 1: is wise. Even in heavenly pleasures, he finds no satisfaction.
- 2:28Speaker 1: The disciple, who is fully awakened delights only in the
- 2:32Speaker 1: destruction of all desires. Men driven by fear go to
- 2:40Speaker 1: many a refuge, to mountains and forests, to groves and
- 2:46Speaker 1: sacred trees. But that is not a safe refuge. That
- 2:52Speaker 1: is not the best refuge. A man is not delivered
- 2:57Speaker 1: from all pains after having gone to that refuge. He
- 3:03Speaker 1: who takes refuge with Buddha, the Law, and the Church,
- 3:08Speaker 1: he who with clear understanding sees the four holy truth,
- 3:14Speaker 1: namely pain, the origin of pain, the destruction of pain,
- 3:21Speaker 1: and the eightfold Holy way that leads to the quieting
- 3:25Speaker 1: of pain. That is the safe refuge, that is the
- 3:30Speaker 1: best refuge. Having gone to that refuge, a man is
- 3:36Speaker 1: delivered from all pain. A supernatural person a Buddha is
- 3:43Speaker 1: not easily found. He is not born everywhere. Wherever such
- 3:49Speaker 1: a sage is born, that race prospers. Happy is the
- 3:57Speaker 1: arising of the awakened. Happy is the teaching of the
- 4:01Speaker 1: true law. Happy is peace in the church. Happy is
- 4:07Speaker 1: the devotion of those who are at peace. He who
- 4:13Speaker 1: pays homage to those who deserve homage, whether the awakened
- 4:18Speaker 1: Buddha or their disciples, those who have overcome the host
- 4:23Speaker 1: of evils and crossed the flood of sorrow. He who
- 4:29Speaker 1: pays homage to such as have found deliverance and know
- 4:32Speaker 1: no fear. His merit can never be measured by anybody.
- 4:40Speaker 1: End of Chapter fourteen.
