- 1:26Speaker 2: And I just have I mean I can do one thought. Yeah,
- 1:29Speaker 2: it's unprepared usual marines like God, one time? Could you
- 1:34Speaker 2: prepare one time? Are you prepared today? No, you're not prepared.
- 1:39Speaker 2: What do you mean. Yeah, yeah, it's Thursday, so that
- 1:41Speaker 2: your your schedule isn't thrown off, so you're prepared today. Yes,
- 1:44Speaker 2: there you go, all right, Evan Lazar, Alex bar Patriots
- 1:47Speaker 2: Catch twenty two with you for the next couple of
- 1:49Speaker 2: hours here on a bye week Thursday. But this is
- 1:52Speaker 2: a big show for us. This is a big, big show.
- 1:56Speaker 2: I have actually done some homework. I've actually watched a
- 1:59Speaker 2: year prepared. I am so prepared to do this show.
- 2:02Speaker 2: But before we get into the draft talk, I just
- 2:05Speaker 2: want to put this one thing out there. With the
- 2:07Speaker 2: draft talk, don't I'm gonna tell you the players that
- 2:10Speaker 2: I watched, and don't ask me if I watched this
- 2:12Speaker 2: guy or that I didn't. I didn't. I watched like
- 2:14Speaker 2: seven guys. And that's the list we're going off of
- 2:16Speaker 2: for right now.
- 2:17Speaker 3: Good thing, the drafts only seven players.
- 2:19Speaker 2: Okay, but don't I know you and you'll sit there
- 2:22Speaker 2: and you'll say, yeah, but you gotta you gotta watchers too,
- 2:25Speaker 2: and you gotta watch watch. Yeah, I wasted my time,
- 2:28Speaker 2: Thank you for that away. Never wait, I could have
- 2:31Speaker 2: done a little bit more homework on the top of
- 2:33Speaker 2: the draft, but I didn't I'm watch honestly, the players
- 2:36Speaker 2: are going to talk about.
- 2:37Speaker 3: I think you're probably aware enough of burden that you
- 2:39Speaker 3: didn't need to watch them.
- 2:40Speaker 2: There's maybe one guy.
- 2:42Speaker 3: I'll mention that you didn't watch.
- 2:43Speaker 2: I just know I think there's only one guy, this guy.
- 2:46Speaker 2: So don't don't ask me if I think there's only
- 2:47Speaker 2: one guy.
- 2:48Speaker 3: I'm telling you I will revisit. I think there's only
- 2:50Speaker 3: gonna be one guy.
- 2:51Speaker 2: Okay, all right, So we'll get to that in a
- 2:53Speaker 2: little bit. I promise we'll get to the draft talk.
- 2:55Speaker 2: I feel like people come to this show and they
- 2:58Speaker 2: want to talk draft, and I'm all.
- 2:59Speaker 3: The YouTube comments are right now are a draft draft draw.
- 3:02Speaker 2: I've never I have not been prepared yet. I took
- 3:04Speaker 2: the bye week to prepare for you all, and now
- 3:07Speaker 2: I feel like I have my takes like for the
- 3:08Speaker 2: next six months, like I'm good. I'm good until we
- 3:12Speaker 2: start getting some more information, whether it's college football playoff combine,
- 3:16Speaker 2: Senior Bowl, whatever.
- 3:18Speaker 3: I do have a college football playoff take as it
- 3:20Speaker 3: relates to the draft. I want to get in.
- 3:21Speaker 2: So yesterday a little behind the curtain too, before we
- 3:24Speaker 2: get into the current day Patriots, which I do want
- 3:26Speaker 2: to talk about here for a little bit. So I
- 3:28Speaker 2: got off a playbook with our friend John Rook, and
- 3:31Speaker 2: I walked up to No Socks Matt Smith in the office,
- 3:35Speaker 2: and what did we start talking about. We started talking
- 3:38Speaker 2: about a trip to Mobile, Alabama for the Senior Bowl.
- 3:41Speaker 2: So we're we're rolling, We're excited that it's not that well,
- 3:46Speaker 2: That's why I went up to him because I wanted to,
- 3:48Speaker 2: you know, start to put out some preliminary feelers of
- 3:51Speaker 2: what we would like to do, what I would like
- 3:53Speaker 2: to do, and all that kind of stuff. When it
- 3:55Speaker 2: comes to the Senior Bowl and it's a little more
- 3:57Speaker 2: freed around the corner.
- 3:58Speaker 3: We have a little more freedom this year when it
- 3:59Speaker 3: comes to the draft. Look, obviously, last year with the
- 4:01Speaker 3: quarterbacks is very important and a ton of people tune
- 4:04Speaker 3: in and I appreciate that and I appreciate that, but
- 4:08Speaker 3: last year it almost felt limiting, and that because the
- 4:13Speaker 3: quarterback is such a big position, we didn't maybe go
- 4:16Speaker 3: as deep as we do other years or as widespread
- 4:19Speaker 3: as we do other years. And this year it's almost
- 4:22Speaker 3: the opposite, where it feels like every position is on
- 4:25Speaker 3: the table. We have years it was like, okay, we're
- 4:27Speaker 3: mainly doing wide receivers and tackles this year, wide receiver, tackle, corner.
- 4:31Speaker 3: Feels like everything's on the table this year. So we
- 4:33Speaker 3: go from what was a very narrow scope, and I
- 4:36Speaker 3: think we did a good job with quarterbacks. I was
- 4:37Speaker 3: actually going back and reading through some of my quarterback
- 4:40Speaker 3: stuff the last couple of days, just kind of curious
- 4:42Speaker 3: to revisit. I thought we did a good job with
- 4:43Speaker 3: the quarterbacks. But I'm looking forward to this year where.
- 4:46Speaker 2: We get to go. I mean, it's everybody.
- 4:49Speaker 3: You bring up, any name, and it's pretty much that
- 4:51Speaker 3: guy is pretty much in play for the Patriots. Any name, Evan,
- 4:54Speaker 3: any name is in play for the Patriots.
- 4:56Speaker 2: Look how excited he is. He's giddy. He's giddy over there.
- 5:00Speaker 2: He can't wait. Hey Patriots fans, if you want to
- 5:02Speaker 2: see Toyota's best offers, including those not seen on TV,
- 5:05Speaker 2: go to buy at toyota dot com. It's Toyota's official
- 5:08Speaker 2: deal official website for deals from the official vehicle of
- 5:11Speaker 2: the New England Patriots. Toyota. Let's go places, And I
- 5:14Speaker 2: am definitely gonna have one of these tonight because it's
- 5:17Speaker 2: officially the bye week for me. Once this show is over,
- 5:20Speaker 2: So I'm gonna be excited to crack open and easy
- 5:24Speaker 2: to drink, easy to enjoy bud like the official beer
- 5:27Speaker 2: sponsor of the New England Patriots. So I I didn't want
- 5:30Speaker 2: to start with draft talk. I wanted to end with
- 5:32Speaker 2: draft talk. So we're gonna put that on the back
- 5:34Speaker 2: burner for a second because I do want to talk
- 5:36Speaker 2: some current day Patriots before we get in to the
- 5:40Speaker 2: offseason talk. And the biggest takeaway that I had from
- 5:43Speaker 2: this game on Sunday is some sense of frustration for
- 5:50Speaker 2: me personally. I'm just talking about myself. Yeah, I'm getting
- 5:53Speaker 2: a little bit frustrated about certain things that are happening
- 5:56Speaker 2: with this team right now. For the most part this season,
- 6:00Speaker 2: I've been of the state of mind of Okay, it's
- 6:04Speaker 2: a rebuilding year. I'm not expecting much in terms of
- 6:07Speaker 2: wins and losses, that sort of mindset, right, and it
- 6:10Speaker 2: hasn't really phased me all that much. The record hasn't
- 6:13Speaker 2: phased me all that much. I picked them to win
- 6:15Speaker 2: five games. I'm probably gonna be a little bit short there,
- 6:18Speaker 2: but so we all kind of had them in this
- 6:20Speaker 2: three to let's call it three to six win range.
- 6:23Speaker 2: If you really were optimistic at six, so no one
- 6:26Speaker 2: really expected much more than what's going on. The part
- 6:28Speaker 2: that has frustrated me, and as a guy, as a
- 6:32Speaker 2: big Drake May guy, as everybody knows, is it feels
- 6:36Speaker 2: to me that Drake May at this point is ready
- 6:41Speaker 2: to win football games in this league, especially against teams
- 6:44Speaker 2: like the Indianapolis Colts. Right, Like, he played well enough
- 6:47Speaker 2: in that game on Sunday to beat the Colts here
- 6:50Speaker 2: at home. It wasn't perfect, and we can get to
- 6:53Speaker 2: some of the red zone stuff and all that kind
- 6:55Speaker 2: of stuff that went wrong for the Patriots offense, but
- 6:58Speaker 2: this was a good offensive performance. Four hundred yards of
- 7:02Speaker 2: total offense plus four hundred yards two hundred each on
- 7:05Speaker 2: the ground and through the air. And just as a whole,
- 7:10Speaker 2: Drake May now ranks fourteenth among thirty two quarterbacks in QBR,
- 7:15Speaker 2: So he is a above average NFL quarterback already right
- 7:19Speaker 2: as a rookie, as a rookie with the worst offensive
- 7:22Speaker 2: line in football and one of the worst receiving groups
- 7:27Speaker 2: skill position groups in the NFL as well, that's great, Like,
- 7:31Speaker 2: that's optimistic about Drake. But the question then to me
- 7:36Speaker 2: that Bear is asking is how is a quarterback that's
- 7:39Speaker 2: playing above average ball with a let's face it, frankly
- 7:43Speaker 2: and not good supporting cast. Ye, he's already playing a
- 7:46Speaker 2: budget above average ball and just I know you hate
- 7:49Speaker 2: the win probability, but I'm gonna give it to you anyways. Yeah,
- 7:52Speaker 2: so QBO, No.
- 7:53Speaker 3: This is a great example of why it doesn't work.
- 7:55Speaker 2: Right, Yeah, it is. So QBR doubles as a win
- 7:59Speaker 2: probability in metric, right, it's a way to rank quarterbacks,
- 8:01Speaker 2: and it's also a way to rank win probability.
- 8:04Speaker 3: Like if the quarterback plays this way, you'll win this percent.
- 8:07Speaker 4: Right.
- 8:07Speaker 2: So Drake May's QBR right now is fifty eight point zero,
- 8:11Speaker 2: fourteenth among thirty.
- 8:12Speaker 3: Two, So we should be winning fifty eight percent.
- 8:13Speaker 2: They should be winning fifty eight percent of his games.
- 8:15Speaker 2: They're one and six in full games that he's played in,
- 8:18Speaker 2: So there's some of that tiny little bit I would
- 8:22Speaker 2: say on Drake for the turnovers, right, and they it
- 8:24Speaker 2: happened again on Sunday, not necessarily his fault, per se.
- 8:27Speaker 3: I'll say it was the first start, like the first
- 8:30Speaker 3: full game he's had where PFF did not have him
- 8:34Speaker 3: with the turnover work.
- 8:34Speaker 2: Yeah, I downgraded him on the throw for the interception personally,
- 8:39Speaker 2: but it was unlucky that it was intercepted. It shouldn't be.
- 8:42Speaker 3: It should have been an interception. In fact, the intent
- 8:44Speaker 3: behind the throw was to me, to me, was to
- 8:47Speaker 3: protect the ball and to protect Hunter Henry. Yeah, but
- 8:49Speaker 3: and then you just had kind of a flu Well
- 8:51Speaker 3: he threw it off the wrong hit.
- 8:52Speaker 2: But that doesn't right, it doesn't the idea we're just
- 8:54Speaker 2: throwing it low, like you throw it up all low
- 8:56Speaker 2: to prevent a turnover. Yeah, that's right. That's not why
- 8:58Speaker 2: they lost this game. That's what I'm getting at. So
- 9:01Speaker 2: fifty eight point zero means that they should be winning,
- 9:04Speaker 2: even if we just ballpark it. They should be winning
- 9:06Speaker 2: half their games. With Drake Mayott quarterback. They're one in
- 9:10Speaker 2: six in his starts that he finished, you know, not
- 9:12Speaker 2: taking the Jets game out of this. And the question
- 9:16Speaker 2: to me that with this team now as we move forward,
- 9:19Speaker 2: is why, Because the why speaks to the offseason, right, like,
- 9:24Speaker 2: what are they What are the biggest reasons why they
- 9:27Speaker 2: are one and six? And one of the big reasons
- 9:31Speaker 2: and the frustration for me with this is because you know,
- 9:36Speaker 2: I hate talking about this stuff. It is the one
- 9:39Speaker 2: thing that I cannot stand talking about, and that is
- 9:43Speaker 2: in game management, like time management, timeouts. Should he or
- 9:48Speaker 2: shouldn't he have challenged? Like should he have gone for
- 9:52Speaker 2: hail Mary or kicked a sixty eight yard field goal?
- 9:54Speaker 2: You know, this type of stuff drives me up an
- 9:57Speaker 2: absolute wall.
- 9:58Speaker 3: But it's almost like it's it's important or something. It's
- 10:02Speaker 3: you also would have mattered. How about when you have
- 10:05Speaker 3: three fourth downs on a twenty play drive you get
- 10:07Speaker 3: a stop that would have we wouldn't have been talking
- 10:10Speaker 3: about the timeouts al any of that if it didn't matter. Okay, Anyways,
- 10:15Speaker 3: with that being said, when you lose a coin flip game,
- 10:17Speaker 3: when you lose a game like one point at with
- 10:20Speaker 3: twelve seconds left to go in the fourth quarter, those
- 10:22Speaker 3: types of things that you and on the other show,
- 10:25Speaker 3: it's Paul that that talks about this all the time,
- 10:28Speaker 3: and you guys do a great job of talking about it.
- 10:32Speaker 3: These types of things matter, These types of in game
- 10:35Speaker 3: coaching decisions matter. I'm glad it took you four years
- 10:38Speaker 3: to figure that out.
- 10:39Speaker 2: I don't want them to matter. I don't want to
- 10:41Speaker 2: talk about it, not even it matters. But it's not
- 10:43Speaker 2: that I don't want to matter. It's not that I
- 10:45Speaker 2: don't want to talk about it either. I don't want
- 10:46Speaker 2: people because I know how people will get. Yeah, it
- 10:48Speaker 2: has nothing to do with deflecting blame from girod Mao.
- 10:51Speaker 2: I don't want to talk about it because I feel
- 10:53Speaker 2: like there are things that are bigger than this, that
- 10:55Speaker 2: are more important.
- 10:56Speaker 3: You just find it boring.
- 10:57Speaker 2: I find it painstakingly.
- 10:59Speaker 3: Boring, even though it matters and it's important and it's
- 11:02Speaker 3: part of the game.
- 11:03Speaker 2: So all that being, I find the math boring. There's
- 11:06Speaker 2: there's a couple of things you know, obviously that I
- 11:09Speaker 2: think contributed to this loss. That has to be said.
- 11:12Speaker 2: Is one of them. One of them is the fact
- 11:15Speaker 2: that once again they come away with no points before halftime.
- 11:18Speaker 2: Now it's not his fault that they missed a twenty
- 11:19Speaker 2: five yard field goal, Okay, but they come away with
- 11:22Speaker 2: no points or less points than they should have if
- 11:24Speaker 2: you want to handicap the field goal there before the
- 11:28Speaker 2: half in another way that I thought they mishanded that situation.
- 11:31Speaker 2: And then at the end of the game, I understand,
- 11:35Speaker 2: and I had no problem with him invoking Malcolm Butler there,
- 11:38Speaker 2: I actually thought live I turned to Douce and Paul
- 11:41Speaker 2: in the press box and said, well, maybe the argument
- 11:45Speaker 2: is is Malcolm Butler, So I get that point of it.
- 11:49Speaker 2: But my whole point with the timeout usage at the
- 11:52Speaker 2: end of the game is that you have a quarterback
- 11:56Speaker 2: that they have not stopped. Outside of one drive after
- 11:59Speaker 2: the Gonzales pick, which we'll get to, which was run
- 12:01Speaker 2: run pass, they have not stopped Drake May all day.
- 12:04Speaker 2: All he needs is a field goal. So you don't
- 12:06Speaker 2: even have to worry about can you execute in the
- 12:08Speaker 2: red zone because you don't even need to. You don't
- 12:10Speaker 2: need a touchdown, right, you only need a field goal.
- 12:12Speaker 2: If you gave Drake May fifty seconds instead of twelve seconds,
- 12:16Speaker 2: then I really believe that the Patriots would have drove
- 12:18Speaker 2: down the field and won that game. Now, maybe he
- 12:20Speaker 2: throws a pick like he did in you know, against
- 12:23Speaker 2: the Rams, or he did against Tennessee or whatever it's possible.
- 12:26Speaker 2: I'll allow for it. But that to me was a
- 12:29Speaker 2: big part of this game, which it irks and grinds
- 12:32Speaker 2: my gears. But I know that's your side of the street,
- 12:34Speaker 2: so I'll let you go.
- 12:35Speaker 3: Yeah, the key sequence is the end of the game,
- 12:38Speaker 3: and the play calling is part of this so that's
- 12:40Speaker 3: where we kind of bridge the gap there because they
- 12:42Speaker 3: go run, run, pass. Like when they get down inside
- 12:45Speaker 3: the eleven, Drake was doing a great job. They converted
- 12:48Speaker 3: a set was his second and nineteen and a second
- 12:50Speaker 3: and fifteen or second and fourteen on that two minute drive.
- 12:54Speaker 2: Yeah, get down there.
- 12:54Speaker 3: They get to the eleven, they call time out with
- 12:56Speaker 3: forty one seconds to go, and it's like all right,
- 12:58Speaker 3: like everything to that point, yeah, you got it. And
- 13:01Speaker 3: forty one seconds two timeouts in the eleven yard line.
- 13:05Speaker 3: You have almost everything at your disposal, almost everything. The
- 13:09Speaker 3: one thing that you want to avoid is going run
- 13:13Speaker 3: run without a score because now on third down you
- 13:17Speaker 3: have to throw. You become one dimensional. You tip your hand. Yeah,
- 13:19Speaker 3: and they come out and they go run run, So
- 13:21Speaker 3: that was my bigger issue there. Yeah, with the field goal,
- 13:24Speaker 3: I think that was an operational issue. I mean, you
- 13:26Speaker 3: got to hit a twenty five yard field. I'm not
- 13:27Speaker 3: excusing anybody, but that's on the that's an execution thing.
- 13:32Speaker 3: The drive after Gonzale the same thing that was their
- 13:34Speaker 3: only three and out of the game, which you want
- 13:37Speaker 3: to look at it and be able to say they
- 13:39Speaker 3: had I think it was nine drives they had nine drives,
- 13:41Speaker 3: they only had one three and out. That's great progress
- 13:44Speaker 3: for this offense. Yeah, it happened to come at one
- 13:46Speaker 3: of the most crucial points in the game. You get
- 13:48Speaker 3: the turnover. They actually had another. It wasn't a three
- 13:50Speaker 3: and out off their other turnover three place field goal
- 13:53Speaker 3: because they had the field positions. So I guess technically
- 13:55Speaker 3: they had two, but they both came off turnovers, which
- 13:58Speaker 3: is bad complimentary football. And then, yeah, the timeout usage
- 14:02Speaker 3: didn't bug me as much as it bugged some people.
- 14:05Speaker 3: It was more the idea that if you're gonna play
- 14:07Speaker 3: for a field goal, don't play for and I don't
- 14:10Speaker 3: hate playing for a field goal. Can you make that
- 14:12Speaker 3: a sixty four to sixty five yard field goal instead
- 14:14Speaker 3: of sixty eight? In at what depth are you running
- 14:17Speaker 3: those routes going up the field? And I know they
- 14:19Speaker 3: kicked it with a second ago, could they've run the
- 14:21Speaker 3: routes any deeper? Well, if you can mix in something
- 14:23Speaker 3: on the side of nine, or you don't botch the
- 14:25Speaker 3: first one or something like that, Like we saw sly
- 14:28Speaker 3: hit was at sixty two sixty three in San Francisco,
- 14:31Speaker 3: so we can do that, But sixty eight that's two
- 14:34Speaker 3: yards longer than the longest field goal in the NFL
- 14:36Speaker 3: history period. It's four yards longer than the longest outdoor
- 14:39Speaker 3: field goal in NFL history. It's five yards longer than
- 14:42Speaker 3: the longest field goal in NFL history outdoor field goal
- 14:46Speaker 3: in NFL history outside of Denver altitude. Right, So, if
- 14:50Speaker 3: you run those routes a yard or two deeper and
- 14:52Speaker 3: this is a lot harder than it sounds, but not impossible,
- 14:56Speaker 3: if you draw that up a yard or too deeper
- 14:59Speaker 3: than where it actually happened, do you maybe win the
- 15:02Speaker 3: game with the sixty three, sixty four to sixty five
- 15:03Speaker 3: yard field goal instead of sixty eight because.
- 15:05Speaker 2: He was close.
- 15:06Speaker 3: Credit to Joey Slide, he was close, but that I'm
- 15:11Speaker 3: not saying the timeout usage wasn't an issue. Again, I
- 15:13Speaker 3: see the defense of it. It's did they draw it
- 15:16Speaker 3: up for sixty eight or did they draw it up
- 15:19Speaker 3: for sixty five?
- 15:20Speaker 2: Get to sixty eight and.
- 15:21Speaker 3: Say, well, we have no choice now, we got to
- 15:23Speaker 3: kick it cause it's sixty eight. I might almost go
- 15:26Speaker 3: for the hill Mary there, but I don't hate the
- 15:27Speaker 3: idea of kicking the long field goal with the kicker
- 15:29Speaker 3: like Joey slye. But they need to execute a little
- 15:31Speaker 3: further down the field to make that work.
- 15:33Speaker 2: Yeah. I just feel like if you maximize time there
- 15:37Speaker 2: on defense by taking your timeouts on defense, yeah, then
- 15:40Speaker 2: they made they might have one more play so on
- 15:43Speaker 2: offense to get into Joey's slide field.
- 15:46Speaker 3: General consensus or the cliche is timeouts are more valuable
- 15:52Speaker 3: on offense than defense. Yeah, because you don't have to
- 15:56Speaker 3: go hurry up. You know, you're not minute right, you're
- 15:58Speaker 3: not limited to the sideline. So if you're falling back
- 16:01Speaker 3: on that belief, okay, yeah, like I now they're maybe
- 16:08Speaker 3: you look at it and say, well, if that's what
- 16:09Speaker 3: you're doing, do you let them score?
- 16:12Speaker 2: Right?
- 16:12Speaker 3: And that's I never, I very rarely should you let
- 16:16Speaker 3: the opponents score like rare situations.
- 16:18Speaker 2: Yeah, I wouldn't.
- 16:20Speaker 3: There you could have an argument, but like to me,
- 16:22Speaker 3: it's a case of timeouts and more available, more valuable
- 16:25Speaker 3: on offense the defense. And I wonder if they thought they'd.
- 16:26Speaker 2: Have more time.
- 16:27Speaker 3: I also wonder if they were surprised by the Colts
- 16:30Speaker 3: one for two and if they kind of figured, well
- 16:33Speaker 3: they shouldn't have been your okay, fair enough, but to
- 16:36Speaker 3: your like I didn't think the Colts were gonna do
- 16:38Speaker 3: it because they were kind of struggling at times and
- 16:40Speaker 3: it was this long drive. I kind of thought the
- 16:42Speaker 3: Colts are gonna kick it, and I had the thought
- 16:44Speaker 3: where you were where it was like they've been able
- 16:47Speaker 3: to stop drinking may all day. All Right, this goes
- 16:49Speaker 3: to overtime.
- 16:50Speaker 2: Yeah, you know, just win coin to us.
- 16:52Speaker 3: But yeah, I wonder if if the belief was basically
- 16:57Speaker 3: the timeouts are better served on offense.
- 17:00Speaker 2: Yeah, so the end of the game, it didn't. I didn't
- 17:04Speaker 2: love it, and I hear that cliche and I can
- 17:07Speaker 2: hear that argument as well. And then I before halftime,
- 17:11Speaker 2: like this has just happened way too many times this year,
- 17:13Speaker 2: like they've really.
- 17:14Speaker 3: Yeah, halftime one is it's it's time and time and
- 17:18Speaker 3: time again.
- 17:19Speaker 2: They've literally executed before halftime. I'm taking the Texans bomb
- 17:23Speaker 2: to Kishon booty out because that's just a bomb. That's
- 17:25Speaker 2: just a great play and a great throw and catch
- 17:27Speaker 2: by two guys. Like that's not executing a sitch a right,
- 17:31Speaker 2: that's just making a great pot. I'll even give them that.
- 17:34Speaker 3: And there's they've still hit on like two out of eight. Yeah,
- 17:39Speaker 3: if you're being generous whatever you want to call that.
- 17:41Speaker 3: Jets one where at least they didn't punt the ball back,
- 17:43Speaker 3: they killed the block. They still hit on two out.
- 17:45Speaker 2: Of eight to give them that. It's still not good enough.
- 17:48Speaker 2: The only great situational football you've seen all year from
- 17:51Speaker 2: this team is in Chicago. Like that was that was
- 17:53Speaker 2: a well executed Uh looked great, Like that was a
- 17:57Speaker 2: great moment for this team in that in this vein.
- 18:00Speaker 2: But the biggest thing that I look at before halftime
- 18:03Speaker 2: is the decision of course to go run run pass
- 18:07Speaker 2: uh there in that spot, and then coinciding with that
- 18:11Speaker 2: decision to take time outs in between the run plays.
- 18:16Speaker 2: If you're gonna go, in my mind, going run run
- 18:20Speaker 2: on first and second down in those situations, is to
- 18:23Speaker 2: make sure that that is the last possession of the half. Right,
- 18:25Speaker 2: it's to milt clock. So if you're gonna if that's
- 18:28Speaker 2: the idea is to make that the last possession of
- 18:30Speaker 2: the half, then make it. They'll like, make sure it's
- 18:33Speaker 2: the last possession of the half. Don't keep stopping the
- 18:35Speaker 2: clock for him, right, like, don't keep calling timeouts for him.
- 18:38Speaker 2: I just thought that that was a little bit weird
- 18:41Speaker 2: that it feels like you're trying to milk clock, but
- 18:43Speaker 2: then you're also stopping the clock simultaneously, like that sort
- 18:47Speaker 2: of not here nor there. And then to your point
- 18:50Speaker 2: about third down being an obvious passing down, now they
- 18:54Speaker 2: got bailed out that there was a penalty. So my
- 18:58Speaker 2: biggest thing after the second down play was third down
- 19:03Speaker 2: cannot be a sack. You absolutely cannot take a sack
- 19:07Speaker 2: on third down, and he took a sack. It was
- 19:09Speaker 2: probably worst play the game. Yeah, it was one of
- 19:11Speaker 2: his worst plays of the game. And he gets bailed
- 19:12Speaker 2: out for the fact that they get called for a
- 19:15Speaker 2: penalty on the play which stops the clock. So they
- 19:18Speaker 2: really should have came away with not even a field
- 19:21Speaker 2: goal attempt with the way that they handled the situation,
- 19:24Speaker 2: let alone a missed field goal. So that was that
- 19:27Speaker 2: was a bad sequence in this game because you score
- 19:29Speaker 2: a touchdown there. I'm not saying it's a game over,
- 19:32Speaker 2: but with Anthony Richardson, like in his like limited limitations
- 19:36Speaker 2: throwing the football, it's it's you're in a really good spot.
- 19:40Speaker 2: You're in a really good spot up two scores going in.
- 19:42Speaker 3: I thought the management at the end of the first
- 19:45Speaker 3: half is more costly than the management at the end
- 19:47Speaker 3: of the second half. Obviously, in the second half game
- 19:49Speaker 3: online like you have to be better and that wasn't good,
- 19:52Speaker 3: but pound for pound, the end of the first half
- 19:55Speaker 3: was a bigger missed opportunity.
- 19:56Speaker 2: The other element of this that I feel like come
- 20:00Speaker 2: follows a little bit on the coaching side of things, too,
- 20:03Speaker 2: is the regression of the defense, which we've been talking
- 20:05Speaker 2: about on this show for the entire season, but now
- 20:09Speaker 2: it's it really seems like it's coming to ahead because
- 20:13Speaker 2: we're getting to the end of the year and there's
- 20:15Speaker 2: got to be decisions made about, you know what, what's
- 20:17Speaker 2: gonna be what this coaching staff is gonna look like
- 20:20Speaker 2: in year two for Girodmeo. Is it gonna look exactly
- 20:23Speaker 2: the same? Is it not gonna look exactly the same.
- 20:25Speaker 2: I know that there's been a lot of conversations about
- 20:27Speaker 2: DeMarcus Covington. I understand all of those things. I mean, look,
- 20:31Speaker 2: right now, since Drake may took over as the starter,
- 20:35Speaker 2: they have the worst defense in football by DVOA. They're
- 20:38Speaker 2: the thirty second ranked defense in the league. They should
- 20:41Speaker 2: not be the thirty second ranked defense in the league.
- 20:43Speaker 2: They have enough talent on that side of the ball
- 20:46Speaker 2: to at least be middling on defense. They are things
- 20:49Speaker 2: that I am seeing defensively with them, though are I
- 20:52Speaker 2: don't want to call him self inflicted because I don't
- 20:54Speaker 2: want to give zero credit to the opponent, But in
- 20:56Speaker 2: a lot of ways, they just are not tied together
- 21:01Speaker 2: as a defense. It doesn't feel like it's eleven guys
- 21:04Speaker 2: on a string. It feels like it's individuals out there
- 21:07Speaker 2: on islands, like trying to make individual plays to keep
- 21:11Speaker 2: this defense afloat. You know, whether it's run fits, whether
- 21:14Speaker 2: it's assignment's in the red zone, you know, they whether
- 21:17Speaker 2: it's you know that fourth and three play after the
- 21:20Speaker 2: catch that everybody wanted Girodmeo to challenge. That fourth and
- 21:23Speaker 2: three play, the receiver is just wide open, like it's
- 21:26Speaker 2: another coverage bust, Like it's just a wide open coverage
- 21:29Speaker 2: bust on a critical game deciding type of play. They
- 21:34Speaker 2: can't get off the field there because they don't have
- 21:37Speaker 2: good zone distribution and there's nobody to cover the tight
- 21:40Speaker 2: end there when Anthony Richardson kind of breaks contain and
- 21:44Speaker 2: then there's just nobody there and not to you know,
- 21:46Speaker 2: look get Sjabrill Peppers's first game back. But the whole
- 21:50Speaker 2: break container element of it too just speaks to the
- 21:53Speaker 2: undisciplined nature of this defense right now, the run fits again,
- 21:57Speaker 2: and the run defense again was a problem. So I
- 22:01Speaker 2: do think defensively, we're getting to the point now where
- 22:05Speaker 2: there need to be some changes on that side of
- 22:07Speaker 2: the football in the offseason, not just personnel wise, but
- 22:10Speaker 2: maybe coaching staff wise as well, because of just really
- 22:14Speaker 2: what's going on fundamentally with the defense run defense assignments.
- 22:19Speaker 2: You know, how many times are we going to watch
- 22:21Speaker 2: them blow coverages in the red zone before something has
- 22:25Speaker 2: to give there? So and just in general, I think
- 22:27Speaker 2: that that is a big, big question mark and problem
- 22:31Speaker 2: that they need to answer. And it's a tough one
- 22:33Speaker 2: because everybody really is very high on DeMarcus Covington, myself
- 22:37Speaker 2: included in terms of the future for him as a
- 22:40Speaker 2: coach in this league. But right now it feels to
- 22:43Speaker 2: me a little bit like they've regressed too hard on
- 22:46Speaker 2: that side of the ball.
- 22:47Speaker 3: I mean, how many times did we talk about in
- 22:50Speaker 3: the spring of the summer that the point of the
- 22:51Speaker 3: season was are you better at the end than you
- 22:52Speaker 3: are at the beginning? And you use the word regression.
- 22:54Speaker 2: That's what it is.
- 22:55Speaker 3: You're looking for growth and it's just not there defensively
- 22:57Speaker 3: right now?
- 22:59Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, the last one red zone obviously go two
- 23:02Speaker 2: for six in the red zone for.
- 23:03Speaker 3: Six defensively three for four. The opponent goes three for four.
- 23:06Speaker 3: Three weeks in a row, they've done three for four
- 23:08Speaker 3: defensively in the red zone. So you have to be
- 23:11Speaker 3: better in that area. Yeah, and Drake May should be
- 23:13Speaker 3: a weapon. And this goes to you look how the
- 23:16Speaker 3: Colts used Anthony Richardson down there, and Alex Van Pelt
- 23:19Speaker 3: changed his tone going into that game. He had said
- 23:22Speaker 3: that they weren't going to do design quarterback runs for
- 23:24Speaker 3: Drake May, and I mean they still haven't, but that
- 23:27Speaker 3: week he said, you know, we might mix them in.
- 23:30Speaker 3: You might have had a shot to mix one in there.
- 23:32Speaker 3: So you saw what a difference maker Richardson could be
- 23:35Speaker 3: in that scenario when you lose that space and you
- 23:37Speaker 3: have more defenders down in the box and now you
- 23:40Speaker 3: have more guys you have to block. When you have
- 23:41Speaker 3: the quarterback as an extra number in that count, the
- 23:44Speaker 3: running backs now blocking that can give you an advantage.
- 23:47Speaker 3: So I offensively, I wonder if that's key. Defensively, they're
- 23:51Speaker 3: just they're getting beat every which way.
- 23:53Speaker 2: In the red zone.
- 23:53Speaker 3: So there's not one thing I think you look at
- 23:55Speaker 3: and you say, if you adjust this or if you
- 23:57Speaker 3: try that. It's a lot more more complex than that.
- 24:01Speaker 3: But offensively, I wonder if i'd get they don't want
- 24:03Speaker 3: to run Drake may A ton and I agree with that.
- 24:06Speaker 2: I would rather underrun him than overrun him. Yeah, but I.
- 24:09Speaker 3: Don't think the answer is zero either, And if there
- 24:12Speaker 3: is a time to do it, I think the red
- 24:13Speaker 3: zone's it.
- 24:15Speaker 2: What's happening for offensively in the red zone other than
- 24:18Speaker 2: one drive that completely got killed by penalties. They get
- 24:22Speaker 2: called for holds on back to back plays and first
- 24:24Speaker 2: and goal from the two becomes first and twenty two
- 24:27Speaker 2: from outside the red zone. They there, they go from
- 24:30Speaker 2: the two line to outside the red zone because of penalties.
- 24:33Speaker 2: So that was one of the drives that got killed.
- 24:35Speaker 2: The other drive that got killed was obviously the pick
- 24:38Speaker 2: right like that happens in the pick, And then the
- 24:40Speaker 2: other two drives were situations where they got into third
- 24:43Speaker 2: bat third down dropback situations. When you are in third
- 24:48Speaker 2: and obvious pass down in the red zone, that's a
- 24:51Speaker 2: difficult play to execute, like it's a difficult way to
- 24:55Speaker 2: score it really is. The main reason why it is
- 24:59Speaker 2: obviously because the space is condensed, so there's no vertical
- 25:02Speaker 2: element to the field, so you really only are working
- 25:05Speaker 2: with the horizontal stretch of the field, which is why
- 25:08Speaker 2: on the first one they called mesh because that's a
- 25:10Speaker 2: horizontally stretching of the field type of play. But the
- 25:14Speaker 2: problem is that if you're spacing is off like it
- 25:16Speaker 2: was on that play, there's just not a whole lot
- 25:19Speaker 2: of answers for the quarterback at that point on mesh
- 25:22Speaker 2: against zone. So I didn't love that call from a
- 25:25Speaker 2: play call in perspective, because there's really when you get
- 25:28Speaker 2: zone coverage against mesh, which is the crossing routes in
- 25:31Speaker 2: the middle of the field with a little sit or
- 25:33Speaker 2: an over the ball route by the tight end behind it,
- 25:36Speaker 2: and then usually you have like a flare or rail
- 25:39Speaker 2: out in the flats. It's a really good answer against
- 25:41Speaker 2: man to man coverage in the red zone. Most teams
- 25:44Speaker 2: call that mesh traffic where they're just trying to get
- 25:47Speaker 2: some picks or some traffic in the middle of the
- 25:49Speaker 2: field and leak the running back out and a lot
- 25:51Speaker 2: of the time if you can get that player in
- 25:54Speaker 2: the box to have to go through a bunch of
- 25:55Speaker 2: trash on his way out to the flat to the
- 25:57Speaker 2: running back, the running backs just wide open in the
- 25:59Speaker 2: flat right and he can just run the foot race
- 26:01Speaker 2: and it's a touchdown. But the problem is is that
- 26:04Speaker 2: with Mesha in terms of getting zone coverage, which is
- 26:07Speaker 2: what they got on the play, really the only answer
- 26:10Speaker 2: to mesh against zone is the over the ball route right,
- 26:13Speaker 2: and so you have to stretch out the underneath zones
- 26:17Speaker 2: and create that passing lane to Hunter Henry Hunter, Henry
- 26:20Speaker 2: I thought probably could have cut off his route a
- 26:22Speaker 2: little bit sooner and been a little bit more to
- 26:24Speaker 2: the hash instead of the middle of the field. And
- 26:27Speaker 2: Kendrick Bourne owned it after the game that he ran
- 26:30Speaker 2: the wrong route around his route poorly. It didn't keep
- 26:33Speaker 2: you know, running and continuing across the field. So you
- 26:36Speaker 2: get into an obvious pass situation. Not only is it's
- 26:40Speaker 2: in the tight quarters to throw the football. Not only
- 26:42Speaker 2: do you have to have the right play call against
- 26:44Speaker 2: the coverage that you get and line it up that way,
- 26:47Speaker 2: you're also asking a young quarterback to now read progressions
- 26:51Speaker 2: in the red zone where things happen a lot faster.
- 26:54Speaker 2: So the one thing that I would put on Drake
- 26:56Speaker 2: a little bit in the red zone is when they
- 26:58Speaker 2: get into those situations, he's got to be quicker. He's
- 27:01Speaker 2: got to be faster through the reads. Like on one
- 27:04Speaker 2: of the plays, it was a second down play, he
- 27:06Speaker 2: had Gibson on the angle on the Texas route coming
- 27:09Speaker 2: out of the backfield. Gibson slipped a little bit, and
- 27:11Speaker 2: I think that's why Drake came off of it. But
- 27:14Speaker 2: that's one where you just put it on your running
- 27:16Speaker 2: back James White style and he burrows his way into
- 27:19Speaker 2: the end zone and you don't have to get into
- 27:21Speaker 2: a third down. You know. Those are the types of
- 27:23Speaker 2: things I thought he had Remandre. They kind of had
- 27:27Speaker 2: Remandre wheel or seam frond of seam out of the
- 27:30Speaker 2: backfield and make it three strong on that side, and
- 27:32Speaker 2: he kind of runs the seam. I thought he had
- 27:35Speaker 2: Remandre on the seam. He would have had to rip
- 27:37Speaker 2: it like it would have had to have been a
- 27:38Speaker 2: tight window. But that's what happens in the red zone
- 27:41Speaker 2: in the league. The windows shrink, the timing is faster,
- 27:45Speaker 2: So those things are tough for young quarterbacks. And the
- 27:50Speaker 2: one way, you know, like as you were talking about,
- 27:53Speaker 2: to combat the fact that asking quarterbacks to go through
- 27:56Speaker 2: progressions in the red zone can be dicey that when
- 27:59Speaker 2: they're in their rookie seasons and their young quarterbacks in
- 28:01Speaker 2: this league is to run option plays, read options, you know,
- 28:06Speaker 2: play actions like things like that where it's really simplifying
- 28:11Speaker 2: the game for the quarterback. Right, so you're not getting
- 28:13Speaker 2: back into the gun, dropping back and going one, two, three, four, five, right,
- 28:17Speaker 2: You're just it's an RPO. You're either handing it off
- 28:21Speaker 2: or you're running it yourself, you're throwing a slant, whatever
- 28:24Speaker 2: the case may be. I think that those are the
- 28:26Speaker 2: things that they have to get to a little bit
- 28:28Speaker 2: more moving forward in the red zone from an offensive perspective.
- 28:32Speaker 2: Last thing on the offense in the red zone or
- 28:36Speaker 2: in the offense in general, the Gonzo drive, you know,
- 28:39Speaker 2: the Gonzo picks it off. Yeah, really probably should have
- 28:42Speaker 2: sealed the game right there, the first down run. I'm
- 28:45Speaker 2: fine with running the ball on first and ten there,
- 28:49Speaker 2: that's okay. I there is a chance that he might
- 28:52Speaker 2: have checked into the second run. I'm not one hundred
- 28:55Speaker 2: percent sure, but it looked like he did have some
- 28:57Speaker 2: communication pre snaps, so maybe that was a can or
- 29:01Speaker 2: you know, a check into a run on second down.
- 29:05Speaker 2: But then again, you get yourself into obvious pass on
- 29:07Speaker 2: third down, and these are the situations you run yourself into.
- 29:10Speaker 2: I thought he had a chance on third down to
- 29:13Speaker 2: make a throw to Kendrick Bourne on that play, But
- 29:15Speaker 2: what it looked like to me was he was told
- 29:19Speaker 2: if you don't love anything, you can't turn it over here,
- 29:23Speaker 2: like we can't have a turnover. So he kind of
- 29:25Speaker 2: turtles in the pocket. And I'm not saying that he's
- 29:27Speaker 2: like afraid to get hit, don't take it the wrong way,
- 29:30Speaker 2: but it looks to me like he felt some pressure
- 29:32Speaker 2: from behind him and didn't want to get strip sacked again,
- 29:35Speaker 2: and so he just went down.
- 29:36Speaker 3: Which like good, like that that's growth.
- 29:39Speaker 2: I just I don't know.
- 29:40Speaker 3: I kind of would have liked them to take a
- 29:41Speaker 3: shot there. Yeah, on the first or second down, and
- 29:43Speaker 3: maybe that's what he checked out of, but I thought
- 29:45Speaker 3: that was a good time to take a shot.
- 29:47Speaker 2: Yeah. I can't disagree with you there, but just in general,
- 29:49Speaker 2: I think that those are the the ways that you
- 29:53Speaker 2: get a really good performance from your rookie quarterback who
- 29:58Speaker 2: continues to stack games. Obviously the Miami game wasn't was
- 30:01Speaker 2: bad for everybody, but rams game, this game, stacking good
- 30:06Speaker 2: games against these teams, and you just can't win. You can't,
- 30:11Speaker 2: they can't, they can't come away with wins. And I
- 30:13Speaker 2: feel like game management, defensive regression, red zone offense for
- 30:18Speaker 2: the three reasons you could check all three of those boxes.
- 30:20Speaker 2: All right, let's do three up, three down, and then
- 30:22Speaker 2: we're gonna get into the draft. So do you want
- 30:26Speaker 2: to start? It was gonna brut up and everyone up
- 30:28Speaker 2: with Strake May. Yeah.
- 30:29Speaker 3: I thought, maybe not the flashiest game he's played as
- 30:33Speaker 3: a pro outside of the forty one yard run. Doesn't
- 30:35Speaker 3: have and I mean to minimize that, but like didn't
- 30:37Speaker 3: have those like real highlight deep ball kind of throws.
- 30:41Speaker 3: But what a complete game he played. I just thought
- 30:46Speaker 3: his he did a good job reading the defense. The
- 30:50Speaker 3: intermediate accuracy was excellent. I thought his decisions went to
- 30:54Speaker 3: run when to not run made sense. He protected himself
- 30:57Speaker 3: and running the football didn't put the ball on harm's way.
- 31:00Speaker 3: That's what you're looking for. That's the game we're we're
- 31:03Speaker 3: looking for. And when we've talked about where there's room
- 31:08Speaker 3: for growth with Drake May kind of balancing that, Okay,
- 31:11Speaker 3: where does he need to be better and where will
- 31:13Speaker 3: it just naturally improve when the talent around him is better.
- 31:16Speaker 3: And this was the first game where I feel like
- 31:18Speaker 3: definitively you looked at it and you said, I'm not
- 31:22Speaker 3: sure how much more he could have done. There was
- 31:24Speaker 3: some but like he plays at that level with an
- 31:28Speaker 3: improved roster to your for Cock to QBR stat like,
- 31:32Speaker 3: they're gonna wait probably more than fifty eight percent of
- 31:33Speaker 3: the games with him playing that way.
- 31:35Speaker 2: Cock, that's the best way to measure quarterbacks.
- 31:38Speaker 3: But when when well, he was more than fifty percent,
- 31:41Speaker 3: when he plays the way he played on Sunday, they're
- 31:43Speaker 3: gonna be more.
- 31:44Speaker 2: Oh no, yeah, his QBR on Sunday was like seventy five.
- 31:46Speaker 3: Okay, that I would say is probably more like it.
- 31:49Speaker 3: So now he needs to stack him When we talk
- 31:52Speaker 3: about the growth down the stretch, right, it can't just
- 31:54Speaker 3: be being intermittent.
- 31:56Speaker 2: But if you get all you can give him one.
- 31:59Speaker 3: If you get like three more of those games in
- 32:01Speaker 3: the last four from Drake May, I'd feel I'm gonna
- 32:04Speaker 3: feel really good heading into year two, Like that's the
- 32:07Speaker 3: kind of game I've been waiting for him to play.
- 32:10Speaker 2: Yeah, No, he was really good in this game. And
- 32:12Speaker 2: I think, what you know, just I had him with
- 32:14Speaker 2: a twelve plus plays five and a half minus plays
- 32:16Speaker 2: in this game, so it really was half really good ratio.
- 32:20Speaker 2: I would have to go look at my notes and
- 32:21Speaker 2: see you half plays I do have for sometimes I
- 32:24Speaker 2: do have for like ball placement issues where it's still
- 32:28Speaker 2: a completion, but like the ball placement wasn't great. Interception No, yes,
- 32:32Speaker 2: the interception was a full downgrade to me. But there
- 32:36Speaker 2: was a ball to Hooper along the sideline where he
- 32:39Speaker 2: wrong shouldered Hooper and Hooper had to fight through some
- 32:42Speaker 2: contact to make the catch, made a really nice catch
- 32:44Speaker 2: on the ball, and I put that as a half
- 32:46Speaker 2: match down. No, okay, no, that was great. The wrong No,
- 32:50Speaker 2: it was a different It was a different one anyways.
- 32:53Speaker 2: But number one up was Drake May. I think what
- 32:56Speaker 2: continues to impress me so much is how well he's
- 33:00Speaker 2: doing at the first two levels of the defense and
- 33:02Speaker 2: the short in the intermediate passing game. I don't think
- 33:05Speaker 2: there was a lot of people that were anti Drake
- 33:08Speaker 2: May in the draft that anticipated that he would be
- 33:10Speaker 2: this good instructure. This early on, we a lot of
- 33:14Speaker 2: people kind of knew that he had the deep ball,
- 33:17Speaker 2: had the mobility, had the off script stuff. But the
- 33:20Speaker 2: ability to just kind of dice up zone coverage like
- 33:22Speaker 2: he did on Sunday was something that I was told
- 33:25Speaker 2: a million times he couldn't do right, Like all draft season,
- 33:28Speaker 2: I was told that was not in his game, that
- 33:30Speaker 2: that wasn't who he is, like all those kinds of stuff.
- 33:33Speaker 2: It's hard when you play Augus Bradley's style defense, a
- 33:37Speaker 2: Seattle three style defense, to just take profits underneath the
- 33:41Speaker 2: defense and be patient and take the chunks and take
- 33:44Speaker 2: the easy layups. When you're a quarterback that wants to
- 33:48Speaker 2: be back there and wants to make plays, it's hard.
- 33:50Speaker 2: It's hard to not take the bait and throw deep.
- 33:53Speaker 2: You know, a couple of times, and a lot of
- 33:56Speaker 2: young quarterbacks, you know, my boy, Josh Allen, you know
- 33:59Speaker 2: a lot of young quarterbacks make mistakes doing that. Right.
- 34:02Speaker 2: They'll they'll take the cheese and they'll throw deep and
- 34:04Speaker 2: all and then it's a pick right like they do.
- 34:08Speaker 2: It was really impressive to watch how patient he was
- 34:11Speaker 2: marching the ball down the field in this game. And
- 34:14Speaker 2: I continue to be really impressed too with some of
- 34:17Speaker 2: his anticipatory throws. I thought those were his best throws
- 34:20Speaker 2: on Sunday. You know, Hunter Henry on a out on
- 34:23Speaker 2: third down, just a great ball, you know, just right
- 34:25Speaker 2: out of the break. It's right on Hunter Henry. He
- 34:28Speaker 2: had to throw a couple over the middle to Kendrick
- 34:31Speaker 2: Bourne on those incuts on the bow concept. That's just
- 34:33Speaker 2: like tight window layering the ball in there against zone
- 34:38Speaker 2: like Bourne is like on the other side of the
- 34:39Speaker 2: linebacker and he's throwing them open on the you know,
- 34:42Speaker 2: one side to the other side of the linebackers. Like,
- 34:44Speaker 2: those anticipatory throws are really impressive, next level type of throws.
- 34:50Speaker 2: And then again, you play man coverage against this guy,
- 34:53Speaker 2: you better account for the quarterback because otherwise he's gonna
- 34:56Speaker 2: run for forty one yards. So when you put it
- 34:58Speaker 2: all together, you know, I think he only had what
- 35:01Speaker 2: like two hundred and something passing yards in this game.
- 35:04Speaker 2: It was I have it right here, it was two
- 35:06Speaker 2: thirty eight. But then you add the forty one yard
- 35:09Speaker 2: run in there too, and you know, really fifty what
- 35:12Speaker 2: nine yards on the ground I think he had in
- 35:14Speaker 2: this game. You're up over three hundred yards of total
- 35:16Speaker 2: offense from your quarterback almost so he was very very
- 35:20Speaker 2: good in this game.
- 35:21Speaker 3: Yeah, number two Christian Zalez. Yeah, just another excellent game
- 35:26Speaker 3: from him. That interception should have sealed. It had a
- 35:28Speaker 3: couple other pass breakups. I think I said this last week, right,
- 35:32Speaker 3: at what point do we just retire Christian Zalz isn't
- 35:35Speaker 3: up and just acknowledge it's every week domit.
- 35:37Speaker 2: Yeah, I'll say this about Christian Goanzalz to all you
- 35:40Speaker 2: Patriots fans out there. I'm gonna look into the camera
- 35:43Speaker 2: on the ISO shot right now and say to all
- 35:45Speaker 2: those Patriots fans out there, go vote for Christian Goanzales
- 35:49Speaker 2: in the Pro Bowl. Yeah, go smash the vote button
- 35:51Speaker 2: and go vote for this guy in the Pro Bowl.
- 35:53Speaker 2: I know the team right now, I know. I know
- 35:56Speaker 2: the team is struggling. I know that they don't have
- 35:58Speaker 2: a great record. I know all of that. But he
- 36:01Speaker 2: is playing at a Pro Bowl level. He deserves to
- 36:04Speaker 2: be in the Pro Bowl. He deserves your support. So
- 36:06Speaker 2: go out there and vote for Christian Gonzales for the
- 36:09Speaker 2: Pro Bowl because he's playing lights out football right now.
- 36:12Speaker 2: He sometimes has games like this where it just looks
- 36:17Speaker 2: so effortless and so easy for him. And I don't
- 36:20Speaker 2: mean to disrespect Alec Pierce or Michael Pittman, who are
- 36:23Speaker 2: both NFL receivers and are capable guys. It was it
- 36:27Speaker 2: was light work for Christian Zalez in this game to
- 36:29Speaker 2: cover those two guys. It was it was a stroll
- 36:32Speaker 2: in the park and the interception was just a fantastic
- 36:36Speaker 2: play of route recognition and just driving on the football
- 36:39Speaker 2: and jumping the pass over the middle of the field.
- 36:42Speaker 2: He's just been outrageous. He's been great almost every single week.
- 36:46Speaker 2: He's still only giving up one deep past the entire year,
- 36:49Speaker 2: that won in London to Brian Thomas Jr. Is the
- 36:52Speaker 2: only deep ball he's allowed all season long. Into his coverage,
- 36:56Speaker 2: he's been excellent, and he does it every single week,
- 36:58Speaker 2: playing almost fifty percent of his downs in man coverage
- 37:01Speaker 2: and shadowing the other team's best outside receiver every single week.
- 37:06Speaker 2: Like he's getting you know, Michael Pittman, he's getting Tyreek Hill,
- 37:10Speaker 2: he's getting Garrett Wilson, he's getting you know, whoever they play,
- 37:13Speaker 2: he's getting the number one guy, and he's going toe
- 37:17Speaker 2: to toe with that guy every single week. So you
- 37:19Speaker 2: can go and take like your zone corners, right, like,
- 37:21Speaker 2: go let those guys in the Pro Bowl too. I
- 37:23Speaker 2: guess the guy that shadows him slowers all the way across.
- 37:27Speaker 2: That's the guy that I'm taking. Well, and I've seen
- 37:29Speaker 2: this take.
- 37:30Speaker 3: People have been like, yeah, but he's being targeted a lot,
- 37:32Speaker 3: and he's six in the league in targets with seventy two,
- 37:36Speaker 3: he's fifteenth and catches a lad with forty one. Like
- 37:38Speaker 3: the opposing opposing completion percentage is I think it's it's
- 37:43Speaker 3: fifty six.
- 37:44Speaker 2: It's very low. So I don't know, like.
- 37:46Speaker 3: Why do teams Why are teams throwing in him as
- 37:48Speaker 3: much as they are, couldn't tell you.
- 37:50Speaker 2: I don't really care.
- 37:51Speaker 3: It's awesome as long as he keeps making the plays
- 37:53Speaker 3: which he's making, like go ahead, waste those back whatever.
- 37:56Speaker 2: They're throwing a lot at him because he's covering the
- 37:58Speaker 2: number one receiver, so like.
- 38:00Speaker 3: These well, but I think people used to like, you know,
- 38:03Speaker 3: to go back to Gilmour even revis where like teams
- 38:06Speaker 3: didn't even throw to that receiver, they just left the
- 38:09Speaker 3: corner alone. Yeah, and I think people are expecting that
- 38:13Speaker 3: the target number to me is not totally irrelevant. But
- 38:17Speaker 3: like again, if the passes aren't being completed, then let
- 38:22Speaker 3: them waste the down.
- 38:23Speaker 2: I don't really care. I just feel like the target
- 38:26Speaker 2: number to me is indicative of you're gonna go into
- 38:28Speaker 2: these games and teams are gonna trying to feed their guys.
- 38:31Speaker 2: Like even if you're you have a really good corner,
- 38:35Speaker 2: like if you're going up against Tyree Hill and Jalen Waddle,
- 38:37Speaker 2: if you're going up against uh, you know, Stefan Diggs,
- 38:40Speaker 2: if you're going up against whoever, like Calvin Ridley, like
- 38:44Speaker 2: that's the guy on the other team. They're not gonna
- 38:47Speaker 2: go the entire game without targeting their number one receiver.
- 38:50Speaker 2: And when you're playing as much man to man coverage
- 38:52Speaker 2: as the Patriots are playing, Uh, then I feel like
- 38:55Speaker 2: that's another you know, thing to to point to that
- 38:59Speaker 2: those guys are on an island a lot. So it's
- 39:03Speaker 2: not like there's like doubles or safety help. That is
- 39:05Speaker 2: also deterring quarterbacks. When quarterbacks see their number one receiver
- 39:09Speaker 2: one on one with the guy, they're gonna throw them
- 39:11Speaker 2: the ball. You know, that's the way it goes, all right?
- 39:14Speaker 2: Third up, Ben Brown, nice, I just Ben Brown shout there.
- 39:19Speaker 3: You got to Forest Buckner, who's been a Patriots killer,
- 39:21Speaker 3: and Buckner at a good game, but not against Brown.
- 39:23Speaker 3: He had Laydon Robinson next to him playing a new position.
- 39:26Speaker 3: Like remember last time they changed the interior the line.
- 39:28Speaker 3: He had a really bad game. Yep, so you had
- 39:30Speaker 3: more movement against a good player he would solid.
- 39:33Speaker 2: He was solid. Again.
- 39:34Speaker 3: I don't know what you're sending the tape to Canton,
- 39:36Speaker 3: but like, I didn't have any real issues with him.
- 39:39Speaker 3: He didn't stand out to me. It's like, what's Ben
- 39:41Speaker 3: Brown doing?
- 39:42Speaker 2: Role?
- 39:42Speaker 3: Ben Brown got beat there, like he held his own
- 39:44Speaker 3: and he had tough matchups, so good.
- 39:48Speaker 2: I thought it was solid performance from him. I also
- 39:50Speaker 2: have a fourth half up. Okay, yeah, no, I thought
- 39:52Speaker 2: Ben Brown was good in this game, too, wrote I
- 39:54Speaker 2: wrote about it, and after further review, I thought, you know, look,
- 39:57Speaker 2: we keep going here with this offensive line and who's
- 40:00Speaker 2: gonna play and who's not gonna play, and I understand
- 40:04Speaker 2: that this is not a fairness business. Yeah, and Cole
- 40:06Speaker 2: Strange is a former first round pick that the coaching
- 40:09Speaker 2: staff seems kind of high on playing center, and maybe
- 40:12Speaker 2: Ben Brown ends up being a casualty because of that.
- 40:16Speaker 2: But I would just say that Ben Brown does not
- 40:18Speaker 2: deserve to get.
- 40:19Speaker 3: Ben No, it would be a shame. And look, they
- 40:21Speaker 3: need a center down the road, and I'm not saying
- 40:24Speaker 3: Ben Brown is that player. Is he a good backup center? Absolutely? Yeah,
- 40:29Speaker 3: and maybe deserves a shot to at least compete for
- 40:32Speaker 3: the future starting job behind David Andrews. Maybe you draft
- 40:35Speaker 3: somebody on like Day three, but that's a competition. Uh,
- 40:38Speaker 3: they got to keep this guy in Fuld. He's he's
- 40:40Speaker 3: an NFL caliber player and they don't necessarily have a
- 40:42Speaker 3: ton of NFL caliber linemens.
- 40:44Speaker 2: So all right, So I had my last up. I
- 40:46Speaker 2: had a few not like honorable mentions. Yeah, I have
- 40:49Speaker 2: like an honorable mention because I thought it was a
- 40:51Speaker 2: good game for several guys on the offensive side of
- 40:54Speaker 2: the ball. So just quickly on the honorable mentions. Yeah,
- 40:57Speaker 2: even though he was, you know, in on that interception,
- 41:00Speaker 2: I thought both tight ends were really good in this
- 41:02Speaker 2: game and the run and pass game. I just want
- 41:04Speaker 2: to know a little shout out to Austin Hooper. I
- 41:07Speaker 2: think Austin Hooper has been great.
- 41:08Speaker 3: He leads the team in touchdown catches. Yeah, and I
- 41:10Speaker 3: think he's broke the tie with I don't know Jalen Polk. Okay,
- 41:15Speaker 3: their leaders are Hooper with three, Polk with two, and
- 41:17Speaker 3: then a bunch of guys have won.
- 41:18Speaker 2: I thought that he is he's been really, really solid,
- 41:21Speaker 2: and I think he's been a really reliable veteran guy
- 41:24Speaker 2: for some of the younger players in that room as well,
- 41:27Speaker 2: especially Drake May. I think Drake May gets a lot
- 41:30Speaker 2: of help from both tight ends Hunter Henry and Austin Hooper.
- 41:34Speaker 2: I thought Hooper was really good. If you watch the
- 41:37Speaker 2: Ramandre Stevenson's thirty two yard run early in this game
- 41:40Speaker 2: on the opening drive, Hooper takes out two guys with
- 41:43Speaker 2: his block. He gets two guys on that play and
- 41:45Speaker 2: then he obviously had the touchdown. But the up that
- 41:48Speaker 2: I ended up going with was Antonio Gibson, who I
- 41:51Speaker 2: just thought was outstanding for rushes over ten yards in
- 41:55Speaker 2: this game. Continues to be a darling of the analytics,
- 41:59Speaker 2: you know, yards after contact, that type of stuff. He's
- 42:03Speaker 2: third in the league right now in yards after contact
- 42:05Speaker 2: per rush. He should get more touches. He should get
- 42:09Speaker 2: more touches in this offense. Yeah, he needs to play more,
- 42:12Speaker 2: he needs to get the ball more. It's it's funny,
- 42:15Speaker 2: not any no disrespect to Antonio Gibson, but you look
- 42:18Speaker 2: at the yards per contact leaders and it's like Saquon Barkley,
- 42:23Speaker 2: Derrick Henry, and Antonio Gibson, and it's just like, why
- 42:26Speaker 2: is this guy the one that's not touching the ball
- 42:28Speaker 2: in this offense? Right? You know, he's making a lot
- 42:31Speaker 2: of yards. And I would also say that he's a
- 42:34Speaker 2: really good fit for the outside zone scheme, probably better
- 42:38Speaker 2: than the other guy, which we'll get to here in
- 42:40Speaker 2: a little bit. So Antonio Gibson.
- 42:42Speaker 3: So I had one honorable mention of sex from the defense,
- 42:45Speaker 3: I believe it or not. I was so ready to
- 42:47Speaker 3: take a massive victory lap and then he had the
- 42:49Speaker 3: PI late, which is kind of ticky tack. And that's
- 42:52Speaker 3: Alex Austin. Alex Austin finally got to play defense, and
- 42:56Speaker 3: he was good. He looked like the guy we saw
- 42:58Speaker 3: down the stretch last year that you would hope about.
- 43:00Speaker 3: He belongs, He belongs in this league, and he gives
- 43:02Speaker 3: you an option on the boundary. He gives you some
- 43:04Speaker 3: size and physicality on the boundary that you need watching
- 43:07Speaker 3: him at the catch point. Marcus Jones isn't giving you that.
- 43:11Speaker 3: Jonathan Jones isn't giving you that, and against some of
- 43:13Speaker 3: these teams with bigger receivers, you need it. So again
- 43:16Speaker 3: he had the PI late that was costly, but overall,
- 43:21Speaker 3: Alex Austin was good and should continue to play a
- 43:23Speaker 3: role on this defense.
- 43:24Speaker 2: Agreed. Yeah, I was really impressed with him. He had
- 43:27Speaker 2: a couple of really great zone drops in this game.
- 43:30Speaker 2: One he kind of fell off his man because his
- 43:32Speaker 2: man went under and cover three and he picked up
- 43:35Speaker 2: the crosser from the backside of the formation, or actually
- 43:38Speaker 2: might have been in the strength, but regardless, he picked
- 43:40Speaker 2: up the crosser from the other side of the formation.
- 43:42Speaker 2: That's hard to do. Like, that's really good discipline. That's
- 43:45Speaker 2: really good eye discipline and having your eyes in the
- 43:47Speaker 2: right places, you know, once your guy drops off and
- 43:50Speaker 2: you and you kind of pass him off to the
- 43:51Speaker 2: other underneath zones. I thought he was really good in
- 43:54Speaker 2: this game. And the p I is you know, a ticky,
- 43:57Speaker 2: tacky jostling for position type PI. I don't hold out
- 44:00Speaker 2: against him. A great coverage rep on the quarters call
- 44:03Speaker 2: to knock the post away like that could have been
- 44:05Speaker 2: a touchdown without safety help in the middle of the field.
- 44:08Speaker 2: I agree. I thought he was great. Should play more? Yeah, agreed,
- 44:11Speaker 2: all right, him and Gibson play more. Go to the downs,
- 44:14Speaker 2: all right, number one down. We already did this just
- 44:16Speaker 2: game management. Yeah, just as a whole weird We already
- 44:18Speaker 2: we did twenty minutes on that. Yeah, but yeah, yep,
- 44:21Speaker 2: I let you do twenty minutes on that.
- 44:22Speaker 3: You should be thinking it was important. What are you
- 44:24Speaker 3: talking about the story? Let me do twenty minutes the
- 44:26Speaker 3: story of the game. That was the story of the game, Evan.
- 44:30Speaker 5: I know.
- 44:30Speaker 2: That's why I had to talk about it. You know,
- 44:34Speaker 2: has to do his job. You know, it really irked
- 44:36Speaker 2: me to talk about it, you know, the story, but
- 44:39Speaker 2: act like it was some like detour that we know
- 44:42Speaker 2: that was the story of the game. That was the
- 44:44Speaker 2: story of the game. The story of the game was
- 44:48Speaker 2: my number one down. And not that he is fully
- 44:52Speaker 2: to blame. I don't mean to put it all on him,
- 44:55Speaker 2: but the story of the game was not gonna being
- 44:57Speaker 2: able to stop the Colts on a twenty play drive
- 45:00Speaker 2: and that ended with a touchdown that was into Kyle
- 45:03Speaker 2: Dugger's coverage. And I didn't think this game was as
- 45:06Speaker 2: egregiously bad for Kyle Dugger as the Miami game when
- 45:09Speaker 2: I watched it live and I watched the film back,
- 45:12Speaker 2: and I was like, there's still a lot of Kyle
- 45:15Speaker 2: Dugger issues on this tape. I just I don't know
- 45:17Speaker 2: where his head's at, you know, I don't know what's
- 45:20Speaker 2: going on with Kyle Dugger. I don't think this is physical.
- 45:24Speaker 2: I think this is mental. And he's a much better
- 45:27Speaker 2: football player than he showed the last couple of weeks
- 45:29Speaker 2: since he came back from the injury, and they got
- 45:32Speaker 2: to get him back on the program, like they got
- 45:34Speaker 2: to get him back mentally locked in. I thought he
- 45:37Speaker 2: was late on the crossing route on the touchdown, tried
- 45:40Speaker 2: to recover, couldn't. I thought he had some other minus situations,
- 45:45Speaker 2: like they ran that crack taw, that crack sweep quarterback
- 45:50Speaker 2: sweet play and it was a fourth down play, one
- 45:54Speaker 2: of those fourth and shorts where they went for it
- 45:56Speaker 2: and the whole stadium knew what play they were gonna run.
- 45:59Speaker 2: And he gets walloped on the crack block like this
- 46:02Speaker 2: doesn't even see it coming. That to me, is not
- 46:05Speaker 2: a player that's like physically impaired. That's a player that's
- 46:09Speaker 2: not mentally thinking through the game, right, Like this has
- 46:13Speaker 2: got to be the call right, so I need to
- 46:16Speaker 2: get over the top of this block, and instead Michael
- 46:18Speaker 2: Pittman just clocks him and absolutely takes him out. Same
- 46:22Speaker 2: thing happened to Jaylen Hawkins, to be fair, So I
- 46:24Speaker 2: could probably put all the safeties on this list, or
- 46:27Speaker 2: at least those two guys. So I had Dugger as
- 46:29Speaker 2: the number one down mainly because they just need to
- 46:33Speaker 2: get him right, Like, whatever it takes, they just need
- 46:35Speaker 2: to get.
- 46:35Speaker 3: I had him on my list as well. You say
- 46:38Speaker 3: it's mental, I wonder if it's if it's a little
- 46:40Speaker 3: bit of both, or like to me, he feels like
- 46:44Speaker 3: when he's on, when Kyle Tucker's on, he's so instinctive
- 46:47Speaker 3: and his ability to recognize something and then the physical
- 46:51Speaker 3: explosiveness to plant and react to it, and with a
- 46:55Speaker 3: bad ankle, I wonder if he just doubts his ability
- 46:57Speaker 3: to do that, and so he's trying to he's overthinking
- 47:00Speaker 3: things because he's worried about his ability to just go
- 47:03Speaker 3: and cut off of it. Yeah, but yeah, I had
- 47:06Speaker 3: him as a down to for a lot of the reasons.
- 47:07Speaker 3: He said he just he was at the point of
- 47:09Speaker 3: attack in on too many plays that the Patriots got
- 47:12Speaker 3: beat on and he's supposed to be that's supposed to
- 47:15Speaker 3: be a strength to his So he's got to get right.
- 47:17Speaker 2: Yep. My number two down is another guy that they
- 47:20Speaker 2: just need to figure out. They need to get this
- 47:21Speaker 2: guy right. They paid him. He's a guy that's gonna
- 47:24Speaker 2: be here. He's not going anywhere. Ramondre Stevenson. I had
- 47:28Speaker 2: him in this game responsible for I've run stuffs on
- 47:31Speaker 2: his own, just running into piles, you know, tunnel vision,
- 47:36Speaker 2: not seeing cutback lanes, not seeing you know, really feeling
- 47:40Speaker 2: these zone runs like you know, the zone run game
- 47:42Speaker 2: is a rhythmic play. It's not a downhill play. It's
- 47:46Speaker 2: a rhythmic play where everything's kind of being concert and
- 47:50Speaker 2: then the running back is supposed to flow with the
- 47:52Speaker 2: blocking right and black and cut accordingly. I thought there
- 47:56Speaker 2: were multiple runs in this game where there was more
- 47:59Speaker 2: yards to be had that Remandre just wasn't seeing the cut,
- 48:03Speaker 2: the cutback lanes and the right reads, and Antonio Gibson was,
- 48:07Speaker 2: which is why he had the big game that he
- 48:09Speaker 2: had in this game. So whether it's a scheme fit issue,
- 48:13Speaker 2: whether it's a ball security like that's in his head,
- 48:16Speaker 2: I don't know. I can't speak to the second one.
- 48:20Speaker 2: I still I said it when they made this coaching
- 48:22Speaker 2: higher and they gave her Mare the contract, that this
- 48:25Speaker 2: is what I was worried about. I'm still worried about it.
- 48:28Speaker 2: I don't know if he's a great fit for this scheme.
- 48:31Speaker 3: Let me ask you this, do you think it's possible
- 48:34Speaker 3: in the way we talk about quarterbacks getting sped up
- 48:36Speaker 3: when they're facing a lot of pressure. Yeah, do you
- 48:38Speaker 3: think it's possible for a running back to get sped
- 48:40Speaker 3: up in the sense that it just hasn't been blocked
- 48:44Speaker 3: for him all year, so now when there are openings,
- 48:47Speaker 3: he just doesn't know where to look for him because
- 48:48Speaker 3: he's so used to just having to evade that defender
- 48:51Speaker 3: immediately in the backfield.
- 48:52Speaker 2: It's a really fair point, and I would say that
- 48:56Speaker 2: that's definitely on the list of reasons why I think
- 48:59Speaker 2: that maybe he's at this point he's seeing.
- 49:00Speaker 3: Go like it's impossible that as a running back he's
- 49:03Speaker 3: seeing ghosts.
- 49:03Speaker 2: It's just very odd to me, especially with Fermandre, because
- 49:06Speaker 2: I do feel like he has been a good process
- 49:10Speaker 2: cerc like he does read well.
- 49:12Speaker 3: That's the thing that's why I ask you this. It's
- 49:14Speaker 3: not characteristic of him. Yeah, So I wonder if just
- 49:17Speaker 3: the we talked about the start of the season how
- 49:20Speaker 3: egregious the run blocking was, and how he was still
- 49:22Speaker 3: making so much out of it that he really shouldn't
- 49:24Speaker 3: have been. Is it possible that that's all just just
- 49:26Speaker 3: gotten to him at this point.
- 49:27Speaker 2: Absolutely possible. You know, there's just instances that, you know,
- 49:30Speaker 2: with this zone run game where it's just really key
- 49:35Speaker 2: want you know, to make quick decisions, you know, decisive decisions,
- 49:39Speaker 2: and to really see those cutback lanes forming, Like when
- 49:42Speaker 2: there's you know, you're reading usually like the defensive end,
- 49:45Speaker 2: the defensive tackle to the linebacker on the play side
- 49:48Speaker 2: of the field in that order, and when those guys
- 49:51Speaker 2: are flowing outside the numbers and they're trying to set
- 49:53Speaker 2: the edge of the defense, you gotta cut it up,
- 49:56Speaker 2: like you got to cut it up through the middle
- 49:58Speaker 2: of the field. And there's just instances where those cutback
- 50:01Speaker 2: lanes are just right there for him. I'm not saying
- 50:03Speaker 2: that he's gonna go sixty yards to the house if
- 50:05Speaker 2: he cuts it back, but instead of going for one yards,
- 50:08Speaker 2: he might get eight or nine yards if he cuts
- 50:10Speaker 2: it up the field, Like those are big differences when
- 50:13Speaker 2: you know you're a team that wants to run the football.
- 50:15Speaker 2: So I just feel like it's a little bit in
- 50:17Speaker 2: his head all of it. Probably that a little bit
- 50:20Speaker 2: in terms of seeing ghosts. I think the fumbling which
- 50:22Speaker 2: he put the ball on the ground again in this
- 50:24Speaker 2: game as his sixth fumble of the year, So that
- 50:27Speaker 2: goes into the grade too, right like that that's a
- 50:29Speaker 2: downgrade situation as well. So I like Ramandre. I think
- 50:34Speaker 2: he's a good football player. I think that he's better
- 50:36Speaker 2: than he's shown as well in the similar boat as
- 50:38Speaker 2: Kyle Duggar. But it's a guy you paid in the
- 50:40Speaker 2: off season. So he's gonna be here next year. There's
- 50:42Speaker 2: really unless they trade him. There's no way out of
- 50:45Speaker 2: the contract. Right, Like, he's gonna be here, And I'm
- 50:48Speaker 2: not saying they should cut him either, but like, you know,
- 50:50Speaker 2: this is your guy, this is your bell cow. You
- 50:53Speaker 2: got to figure it out.
- 50:54Speaker 3: Yeah, number three Bearinger, Bryce Bearinger and Joey sly combined. Yeah,
- 50:59Speaker 3: not even taking the last feel little out of it.
- 51:02Speaker 3: He's not expected to take that.
- 51:03Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 51:04Speaker 3: On the myths, So Joey Slye talked about there being
- 51:06Speaker 3: a communication error on the twenty five yard miss and
- 51:09Speaker 3: you see him like immediately after he misses the kick,
- 51:12Speaker 3: turn around and look at at Bryce. Yeah, and kickers
- 51:16Speaker 3: use different holds for different kicks depending on the hash
- 51:19Speaker 3: mark on the distance.
- 51:20Speaker 2: It can even be like the weather, the wind.
- 51:22Speaker 3: It might be you know, you're tilting the ball a
- 51:24Speaker 3: little bit to left, a little bit to the right,
- 51:25Speaker 3: little background whatever. So clearly something got messed up there
- 51:29Speaker 3: where the whole wasn't right and that's on both of them. Yeah,
- 51:33Speaker 3: and to miss it by that much like is bad.
- 51:36Speaker 3: And you al said Bryce Behinger had a chance to
- 51:39Speaker 3: really pin the Colts before that going into that nineteen
- 51:42Speaker 3: play drive instead just hits a thirty eight yard punt
- 51:46Speaker 3: down to the seventeen that allowed for return as well.
- 51:49Speaker 3: Didn't even get nine to twenty on that. So I
- 51:51Speaker 3: thought those two guys there were some issues.
- 51:55Speaker 2: Yeah, Bryce Berenger, you're the punter guy, so I'll let
- 51:59Speaker 2: you answer this. But kind of feels like he's had
- 52:02Speaker 2: a bad year. Is that. I don't want to go here.
- 52:07Speaker 2: But it's not quite as bad as Jake Bailey.
- 52:10Speaker 3: No, but he had the one in Jacksonville where he
- 52:14Speaker 3: hits the crap out of the ball, Yeah, and overkicked
- 52:16Speaker 3: out cases covered and the Jacks return it.
- 52:19Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 52:19Speaker 3: And it feels like since then he's been like almost
- 52:23Speaker 3: taking something off to make sure he doesn't out kick
- 52:26Speaker 3: his coverage. And it's now he's maybe taking a little
- 52:28Speaker 3: too much off, right, So he might he might need
- 52:30Speaker 3: a little bit of a reset there.
- 52:31Speaker 2: I mean that.
- 52:32Speaker 3: Look, I'm not expecting even to pin them inside the
- 52:34Speaker 3: three with that kick, especially in those conditions, but to
- 52:38Speaker 3: the seventeen from where they were, he could do a
- 52:41Speaker 3: little better than that.
- 52:42Speaker 2: Yeah, all right, last one, Laden Robinson. I didn't think
- 52:46Speaker 2: he was terrible, but I just didn't think it was.
- 52:49Speaker 2: It was quite good enough. Still, I would say I
- 52:53Speaker 2: had him with four pressures allowed in this game. He
- 52:57Speaker 2: obviously got called for both holds. Two of the pressures
- 53:00Speaker 2: again come on like line stunts, like postline movement one.
- 53:05Speaker 2: He he he went to the linebacker coming from the
- 53:07Speaker 2: second level when he had Remandre and Blitz pick up
- 53:10Speaker 2: like usually you talk, you think back on backer, right,
- 53:14Speaker 2: like the running back has has the linebacker and then
- 53:16Speaker 2: you block the big guys up front. So I thought
- 53:19Speaker 2: that was on him. And you just keep going through
- 53:23Speaker 2: some of these pressures like some of the ones against
- 53:25Speaker 2: you gave up a pressure against Buckner, Like I'm not
- 53:28Speaker 2: gonna kill him for it against the player like that,
- 53:30Speaker 2: But some of these line movements and things like that, Uh,
- 53:33Speaker 2: this is why Michael Jordan got benched just because he
- 53:36Speaker 2: couldn't pick up stunts. So if the next guy can't
- 53:38Speaker 2: pick up a stunt either, then I start to think about, II,
- 53:41Speaker 2: what are we coaching these guys on these things? Right? Like,
- 53:43Speaker 2: how are we preparing these guys for line movement and
- 53:46Speaker 2: picks and games and things like that, the defensive lines,
- 53:49Speaker 2: like the play up front. So I did see some
- 53:52Speaker 2: of the physicality, like I can see where girod Mayo
- 53:54Speaker 2: is coming from that that he's a physical guy and
- 53:57Speaker 2: he moves people on the line of scrimmage. But the
- 53:59Speaker 2: pass pro has still got a long way to go.
- 54:01Speaker 2: So yeah, I had him as number three on the downs.
- 54:04Speaker 2: All right. So there's there's the Colts. I hope you
- 54:07Speaker 2: enjoyed it. Fun game. It was a fun game. It
- 54:10Speaker 2: was a game. It was a fun I enjoyed that game. Yeah,
- 54:12Speaker 2: I agree, let's take these calls and then we'll get
- 54:16Speaker 2: right into the draft, and get right into the draft.
- 54:20Speaker 2: I know I keep teasing it, but before we take
- 54:22Speaker 2: the calls, I gotta do do some homework here. Bridgestone,

- 54:54Speaker 2: Patty is an agoam. What's up, Patty?
- 54:59Speaker 6: What is going on? Gentlemen?
- 55:00Speaker 2: Hey? What's up?
- 55:04Speaker 6: Not too much so, of course the bye week. I'm
- 55:07Speaker 6: glad you guys just talking draft. I wanted to throw
- 55:09Speaker 6: a quick draft question out there for you guys, more
- 55:13Speaker 6: specifically to Alex, because I know like you've been paying
- 55:16Speaker 6: attention a little bit more heaven. I know you're getting
- 55:18Speaker 6: caught up and stuff. But I brought up this name
- 55:21Speaker 6: before and I just wanted to get your opinion on this,
- 55:25Speaker 6: both of you guys. But Josh Simmons, How would you
- 55:30Speaker 6: guys feel, specifically Alex, that you two haven't How would
- 55:33Speaker 6: you feel if if we did take take a left
- 55:35Speaker 6: tackle early, like Will Campbell or Kelvin Banks junior, and
- 55:40Speaker 6: we took him like if he falls to like the
- 55:42Speaker 6: fourth round and he's he's just there and he's too
- 55:45Speaker 6: intriguing to pass up, I mean, would.
- 55:47Speaker 5: He doubled it?
- 55:47Speaker 6: Because, like like we've seen this year, we not only
- 55:51Speaker 6: need talent, we need depth too. And I mean, if
- 55:54Speaker 6: you take two guys that are got to have good
- 55:56Speaker 6: high upside, you got to figure that at least one
- 55:58Speaker 6: of them is going to work out. And I have
- 56:01Speaker 6: the dream scenario too. Here's a dream scenario. We trade
- 56:07Speaker 6: with Oakland and now we finished like either top two
- 56:11Speaker 6: or top three Oakland does or I'm sorry, Vegas, Vegas.
- 56:15Speaker 6: The Raiders do what the Raiders do, and they trade
- 56:19Speaker 6: us their twenty twenty sixth first round pick, plus they're
- 56:25Speaker 6: pick in the second round and their first round pick
- 56:28Speaker 6: bought first round picks with them. They we take a
- 56:33Speaker 6: left tackle and Alex, we take one of those second
- 56:35Speaker 6: round picks. That swap it for day Let's go.
- 56:38Speaker 2: Yeah, that's that.
- 56:39Speaker 3: That's that's a perfect scenario and thanks for the call, Patty.
- 56:42Speaker 3: That is the perfect scenario for me. So Josh simm
- 56:45Speaker 3: is a really interesting player.
- 56:46Speaker 2: It's because this this crawls up your backside a little bit,
- 56:49Speaker 2: which I like.
- 56:50Speaker 3: So for people who don't know, Simmons is a tackle
- 56:53Speaker 3: from Ohio State. Uh, he just declared for the draft,
- 56:56Speaker 3: so he's he's officially coming out left tackle.
- 56:58Speaker 2: There.
- 56:59Speaker 3: Good player, and he had a really good start to
- 57:02Speaker 3: the season. Was viewed as like a top one hundred
- 57:04Speaker 3: prospect coming in and started moving into that first round range.
- 57:10Speaker 3: He then tore his ACL. I think was in late September. Yeah, so,
- 57:15Speaker 3: oh no, it's later in that. It was whenever he
- 57:17Speaker 3: was October. He didn't play against Penn State, I know that,
- 57:19Speaker 3: which was so yeah, yeah, okay, So he tore his ACL.
- 57:22Speaker 3: It was like mid October then, and so there's that
- 57:25Speaker 3: element of it. So I think a lot of Patriots
- 57:29Speaker 3: fans see that and see the trajectory he was on
- 57:31Speaker 3: and see the injury and say, well, okay, we need
- 57:33Speaker 3: a first round tackle. Here's a first round tackle in
- 57:36Speaker 3: the second round. So I can still get my shiny
- 57:38Speaker 3: new toy. I can still get ted McMillan. I can
- 57:40Speaker 3: still get Travis Hunter, but why is he going in
- 57:43Speaker 3: the second round? Sure, right, he's coming off of torn
- 57:46Speaker 3: ACL And could he end up being a good player still, yes,
- 57:50Speaker 3: of course, but there's significant unknown that comes with that.
- 57:53Speaker 2: Is it gonna be a good player, He's gonna be
- 57:55Speaker 2: ready to start the season. Yeah?
- 57:56Speaker 3: If not, then okay, now you still need to get
- 57:58Speaker 3: you either run it back to the Darien Lowe or
- 58:00Speaker 3: you still need to get a starting caliber tackle. And
- 58:03Speaker 3: you know, we've been down this road with guys like
- 58:06Speaker 3: Dominique Easley where you're not necessarily gonna get the same
- 58:09Speaker 3: guy coming off of torn ACL. So for where Simmons
- 58:13Speaker 3: is projected to go, even after the injury, which is
- 58:15Speaker 3: top fifty, he's unless you're gonna go tackle tackle, he's
- 58:19Speaker 3: probably the first tackle you're gonna take. And I just
- 58:23Speaker 3: it's kicking the can again, Evan. It's another half measure.
- 58:25Speaker 3: And how many times have we talked about like this
- 58:29Speaker 3: not they can't keep doing that if they still at
- 58:32Speaker 3: Trent Brown, Right, if it was like two years ago
- 58:34Speaker 3: and it's sorry, you got one more year Trent Brown,
- 58:36Speaker 3: then yeah, it makes perfect sense. But I just think
- 58:39Speaker 3: for where they are right now. No, now, if he
- 58:41Speaker 3: falls to the fourth, like Patty said, if you can
- 58:43Speaker 3: get him down there, absolutely, because he's certainly worth that flyer,
- 58:47Speaker 3: especially if he's your second tackle.
- 58:48Speaker 2: I don't think he's gonna fall that far.
- 58:50Speaker 3: And the reality is, if he does, it probably means
- 58:52Speaker 3: there were some red flags in the medical check, and
- 58:54Speaker 3: now we're talking about maybe a Malcolm Mitchell type situation.
- 58:57Speaker 3: But so I don't hate the player. I think he
- 59:00Speaker 3: makes sense in a certain situation. I just don't think
- 59:03Speaker 3: he makes sense for the situation Patriots are in because
- 59:06Speaker 3: they need a guy that can step in and play,
- 59:09Speaker 3: and Josh Simmons, for what his upside is, isn't guaranteed
- 59:14Speaker 3: to be a guy who can step in and play
- 59:15Speaker 3: starting caliber tackle for you.
- 59:17Speaker 2: So I agree with everything you said. I think the
- 59:19Speaker 2: one thing that you know you mentioned that is the
- 59:23Speaker 2: potential play here, just as play Devil's Advocate, if they
- 59:28Speaker 2: sign a Garrett Bowles, if they sign a Cam rob
- 59:31Speaker 2: and sure, then you go ahead and you and you
- 59:34Speaker 2: throw the dart at Josh Simmons, who A lot of
- 59:37Speaker 2: people that I trust think that he might be the
- 59:40Speaker 2: best pure left tackle of the draft. Like the player,
- 59:43Speaker 2: like not not necessarily the best blocker, right, like you
- 59:46Speaker 2: know they don't. They don't think he's a better prospect
- 59:49Speaker 2: than Will Campbell. But because of Will Campbell's concerns with
- 59:52Speaker 2: arm length and if he's gonna play tackle, you know,
- 59:54Speaker 2: just the guy that is the best, you know, cut
- 59:57Speaker 2: from the cloth type of guy to play tackle, it
- 1:00:00Speaker 2: would be Josh Simmons. So in my mind, I don't
- 1:00:03Speaker 2: hate the plan because this kind of gets to what
- 1:00:05Speaker 2: I my sort of big picture thought on the on
- 1:00:08Speaker 2: this draft, the top of the draft class. I don't
- 1:00:10Speaker 2: hate the plan, but the plan has to come with
- 1:00:13Speaker 2: a immediate stop gap and not Venerian Low. It has
- 1:00:17Speaker 2: to be somebody better, like a Garrett Bowles, like a
- 1:00:20Speaker 2: cam rob.
- 1:00:21Speaker 3: Now that's a guy you're giving a premium contract at.
- 1:00:23Speaker 3: So yes, are you gonna use? Can they afford? So
- 1:00:26Speaker 3: you're not signing Garrett Bowles as a bridge guy in
- 1:00:29Speaker 3: the sense that, all right, well, Simms is gonna be
- 1:00:31Speaker 3: ready in October, so we're gonna.
- 1:00:32Speaker 2: Start here starting no. And my guess, in my mind,
- 1:00:35Speaker 2: this team afford to use what's going to be a
- 1:00:38Speaker 2: top forty pick if you want to take Simmons, I
- 1:00:40Speaker 2: think can this team afford to use a top forty
- 1:00:42Speaker 2: pick on a guy that's not gonna play as a rookie.
- 1:00:46Speaker 2: What what if he plays right tackle?
- 1:00:49Speaker 3: I would rather bowls move that like, no, because now
- 1:00:52Speaker 3: you're if he's gonna play left tackle, you gotta develop
- 1:00:54Speaker 3: him left tackle. You gotta let him learn to play there. Gain,
- 1:00:56Speaker 3: we're crossing wires and we're trying to find ways to
- 1:00:58Speaker 3: make a convenient No, just invest in the position.
- 1:01:02Speaker 2: It's left tackle.
- 1:01:03Speaker 3: It's one of the most important positions on the we're
- 1:01:05Speaker 3: going to do you do you disagree?
- 1:01:06Speaker 2: Though?
- 1:01:06Speaker 3: I don't like can I don't we stop with the
- 1:01:09Speaker 3: half measures and getting cute at left tackle?
- 1:01:11Speaker 6: Well?
- 1:01:11Speaker 2: Yes, but but I'm not getting cute. I'm signing Garrett Bulls,
- 1:01:14Speaker 2: who's a franchise.
- 1:01:15Speaker 3: Okay, but then if you're drafting Josh Simmons, let him
- 1:01:19Speaker 3: work at left tackle.
- 1:01:20Speaker 2: I agree, I would let him work at left tackle.
- 1:01:22Speaker 2: My only thing is is, like, if he's healthy and
- 1:01:24Speaker 2: gets healthy his rookie season and you want to put
- 1:01:26Speaker 2: him on the field, then you can always get his
- 1:01:29Speaker 2: feet wet in the NFL by playing him at in
- 1:01:31Speaker 2: the right side. I guess I just I they've done it.
- 1:01:34Speaker 2: In the past, like and look what I don't mean,
- 1:01:37Speaker 2: like this pass, like the bad pass. Now it was
- 1:01:41Speaker 2: a different past. It was Tom Brady was your quarterback
- 1:01:43Speaker 2: and Bill Belichick was your head coach. But Nate Solder
- 1:01:46Speaker 2: did this right where Matt Light was still here and
- 1:01:49Speaker 2: they had Nate Solder waiting in the wings. He played
- 1:01:51Speaker 2: a little six to zero line. He played a little
- 1:01:53Speaker 2: right tackle right like they just to get him involved as.
- 1:01:57Speaker 3: A road So all right, again, can this team afford
- 1:02:00Speaker 3: to use the top forty pick on a guy that
- 1:02:01Speaker 3: is just involved and not a full time starter? And
- 1:02:05Speaker 3: this also is predicated on the idea, So how how
- 1:02:07Speaker 3: long you signing gear Boles for?
- 1:02:09Speaker 2: Right that you would get Garrett Bowles on like a
- 1:02:13Speaker 2: two year deal.
- 1:02:14Speaker 3: I think he's probably gonna get three years.
- 1:02:16Speaker 2: Yeah, Well, so I just said it to play Devil's out.
- 1:02:18Speaker 2: That's fair enough, good player. I just it.
- 1:02:21Speaker 3: They can't afford to use that pick on a guy
- 1:02:23Speaker 3: that's not gonna play.
- 1:02:25Speaker 2: Fair enough, fair enough? All right? Mark is in Connecticut?
- 1:02:28Speaker 2: What's up? Mark?
- 1:02:30Speaker 5: Steppy? Bye week?
- 1:02:31Speaker 2: Guys, stay New Year. If I don't talk to you, Uh.
- 1:02:36Speaker 5: Just had a couple of quick things for you, guys.
- 1:02:38Speaker 5: I'm just not happy. Here's the first thing. I'm not
- 1:02:41Speaker 5: happy with Girod Mayo with his just non aggressiveness with
- 1:02:45Speaker 5: a lot of you know, end of game decisions. And
- 1:02:48Speaker 5: I know you guys talked about it earlier, but I
- 1:02:50Speaker 5: think you guys were kind of alluded to it that
- 1:02:53Speaker 5: he just needs to be more aggressive because what does
- 1:02:54Speaker 5: he have to lose with this team this year. I'd
- 1:02:57Speaker 5: rather be more aggressive on those type of end of
- 1:03:02Speaker 5: game decisions, and I'm just not seeing that. The other
- 1:03:04Speaker 5: thing is any possibility of Mike Vrabel coming back here
- 1:03:10Speaker 5: and maybe having Girod Mayo take a step down and
- 1:03:14Speaker 5: be at d C because I think he needs a
- 1:03:17Speaker 5: little more grooming in that area as well. And DeMarcus Cummington.
- 1:03:23Speaker 5: I like the guy, but I don't think that he's
- 1:03:26Speaker 5: a d C right now. So I don't know why
- 1:03:28Speaker 5: Gerard isn't getting more of his hand on that defense
- 1:03:32Speaker 5: right now. And then the other thing for the draft, Alex,
- 1:03:36Speaker 5: tell me what you think. I know everybody likes Trevor,
- 1:03:39Speaker 5: Trevor Hunt, Travis Hunter. I love the Mike Evans replica
- 1:03:44Speaker 5: t Mac. What do you think about t Mac in that? Uh,
- 1:03:48Speaker 5: you know, top five pick that we would have. What's
- 1:03:51Speaker 5: your thought on that, Alex?
- 1:03:52Speaker 2: Thanks for the call. Mark. We're gonna get the team where.
- 1:03:54Speaker 2: We'll get to that in a second. Yeah, unvariable. Look,
- 1:03:58Speaker 2: Girodmeo is not getting demoted, right, that doesn't happen. Nobody's
- 1:04:01Speaker 2: getting I've seen that. Well. Can you demote Alex van
- 1:04:03Speaker 2: Pelt to quarterbacks coach? Like it?
- 1:04:04Speaker 3: Actually, when I say it never happens, it sort of
- 1:04:07Speaker 3: happened with Matt grow but that was incredibly rare.
- 1:04:09Speaker 2: No, and now his front office. You don't take a
- 1:04:13Speaker 2: head coach and demote him to defensive coordinator.
- 1:04:15Speaker 5: Right.
- 1:04:15Speaker 2: You might take play calling duties from a coordinator, which
- 1:04:18Speaker 2: I guess is sort of a demotion, but you don't
- 1:04:20Speaker 2: do that at the.
- 1:04:21Speaker 3: Head No, you don't. It's even super Who is it
- 1:04:24Speaker 3: as back where he is it?
- 1:04:26Speaker 2: Raheem Morris? Yeah?
- 1:04:27Speaker 3: Is back where he coached as the DC now the
- 1:04:30Speaker 3: head coach?
- 1:04:31Speaker 2: Yeah? Uh no, he's the head coach there? Who am
- 1:04:33Speaker 2: I thinking of? Were he Morris is in Atlanta? Yeah?
- 1:04:36Speaker 2: But isn't a head coach? Yeah?
- 1:04:38Speaker 3: No, there's somebody in the league. Is the DC somewhere
- 1:04:41Speaker 3: where they had been ahead coach and gotten fired?
- 1:04:44Speaker 2: Oh? I, oh, yeah, who are you talking about? This
- 1:04:47Speaker 2: is gonna bug me.
- 1:04:49Speaker 3: I saw it the other day and I was like, oh,
- 1:04:50Speaker 3: that's interesting. Yeah, yeah, uh it is oh Vance, Joseph Vance,
- 1:04:56Speaker 3: Joseph in denvery. Yeah, because he was he was there
- 1:04:59Speaker 3: having the time of his life, and then he wasn't.
- 1:05:01Speaker 2: And now he's back and having the time of his life.
- 1:05:03Speaker 2: Giving up five hundred yards to Jamis Winston is having
- 1:05:05Speaker 2: a respect Jameis Winston. Yes, he did have waited.
- 1:05:10Speaker 3: The Lord is going to deliver him from pick six
- 1:05:12Speaker 3: to either he said.
- 1:05:13Speaker 2: James hasn't been throwing pick six as his old NFL career.
- 1:05:16Speaker 2: I don't think the Lord's helping him.
- 1:05:17Speaker 3: Thirty thirty man, thirty thirty club to the the Rabel point.
- 1:05:21Speaker 3: And this is something we talked about a lot last offseason. Yes,
- 1:05:24Speaker 3: it wouldn't be moving Mayo down. It would be would
- 1:05:28Speaker 3: Mike Vrabel take a kind of head of football opera rations?
- 1:05:30Speaker 4: Right?
- 1:05:31Speaker 2: I just think that he's so do I we love
- 1:05:35Speaker 2: this idea. I love this. It's so dicey now because
- 1:05:38Speaker 2: of all the fire that's on girod Mayo. If Rabel's
- 1:05:41Speaker 2: here like held, you know, hanging over him all like
- 1:05:45Speaker 2: all the fans are just gonna want able to be
- 1:05:47Speaker 2: the head coach. You gotta do it best for the team.
- 1:05:49Speaker 3: Of having somebody in that roles, what's best for the team,
- 1:05:51Speaker 3: you gotta be willing to take.
- 1:05:52Speaker 2: I just think it's tough to uh to to put
- 1:05:55Speaker 2: Girod in that situation. What if it's not Rabel, Like,
- 1:05:58Speaker 2: I still think hiring somebody in that role. I remember
- 1:06:00Speaker 2: it's for for Wolf and grow too. Yeah, Like, I
- 1:06:03Speaker 2: still think there'd be value in adding that role. Yeah,
- 1:06:06Speaker 2: I'm not gonna lie. You know, when I was watching
- 1:06:07Speaker 2: Monday night football, it was a good game. It was
- 1:06:11Speaker 2: Monday Night, right, yeahs Browns and uh, they panned to
- 1:06:15Speaker 2: the to the brown sideline and Rabel was just standing
- 1:06:18Speaker 2: there on the sideline and I did do a double
- 1:06:21Speaker 2: take of like, in an alternate universe like this, this
- 1:06:25Speaker 2: could have been different. Uh, but I you know, look
- 1:06:28Speaker 2: at it isn't. So that's where we're at. But no,
- 1:06:32Speaker 2: I I don't think they I don't like the idea
- 1:06:36Speaker 2: of bringing Rabel in now because of how year one
- 1:06:38Speaker 2: has gone for Girad MAO. I think that would be
- 1:06:40Speaker 2: that would be tough. You know, I was talking to
- 1:06:43Speaker 2: somebody off the air yesterday about this, uh, you know,
- 1:06:45Speaker 2: just about defensive coordinator and names and things, and you know,
- 1:06:49Speaker 2: obviously like Brian Flores, right, Like, I don't know if
- 1:06:52Speaker 2: you'd make a lateral move, but I'm just saying, you know,
- 1:06:55Speaker 2: Brian Flores is an example. That's another one where can
- 1:06:59Speaker 2: you really bring Brian Flores in here? Because then if
- 1:07:01Speaker 2: it's still not going well, everybody's just gonna want him
- 1:07:03Speaker 2: to be the head coach of the team, right, Josh
- 1:07:05Speaker 2: McDaniels on offense, same thing. It's just gonna be you know,
- 1:07:08Speaker 2: I don't.
- 1:07:09Speaker 3: Know if people a gonna be claaring for Josh McDaniel's
- 1:07:10Speaker 3: head coach.
- 1:07:11Speaker 2: I think if it goes bad again, I think they're
- 1:07:13Speaker 2: gonna be clearing for anybody else. All Right, Reggie is
- 1:07:17Speaker 2: in Peabody.
- 1:07:18Speaker 6: What's up, Reggie, Hey, guys, big fan of the show.
- 1:07:23Speaker 6: Got a quick one for you, guys, is speaking of
- 1:07:26Speaker 6: an alternate universe seven If Jamar Chase and Pense Pool
- 1:07:30Speaker 6: we're both in this draft, So are you guys taken?
- 1:07:33Speaker 2: It's a good question. That's a good question, Reggie. It's
- 1:07:36Speaker 2: a good way to segue us as I keep trying
- 1:07:38Speaker 2: to get us to the draft. I would take Penne
- 1:07:41Speaker 2: Sewel as well. But this is the meme, right and
- 1:07:43Speaker 2: this is like part partially the conversation we're gonna have
- 1:07:47Speaker 2: this offseason, is the wide receiver or the tackle like
- 1:07:50Speaker 2: it's it's kind of similar. I wouldn't put any of
- 1:07:54Speaker 2: these players in the Penne Sewel Jamar Chase level. I
- 1:07:58Speaker 2: think that one worked out. I mean, the Bengals sort
- 1:08:01Speaker 2: of worked out on to a Super Bowl. I suppose
- 1:08:02Speaker 2: it worked out.
- 1:08:03Speaker 3: Joe Burrow still getting hurt every here.
- 1:08:05Speaker 2: That one sort of worked out for both sides because
- 1:08:07Speaker 2: they were both elite players, right, Like, you really didn't
- 1:08:10Speaker 2: have a wrong answer between those two guys. My biggest
- 1:08:14Speaker 2: takeaway as we get into it here with my initial
- 1:08:17Speaker 2: draft thoughts, big Day, my big picture thought after watching
- 1:08:23Speaker 2: the top of this draft class, and that is Travis
- 1:08:27Speaker 2: Hunter both ways, Campbell, Kelvin Banks, Ted McMillan, Abdull Carter
- 1:08:35Speaker 2: Uh and I threw in a couple games of those
- 1:08:37Speaker 2: Georgia guys too and watched them both at the same time.
- 1:08:39Speaker 2: Michael Williams, Will Johnson, and I've already seen Will Johnson
- 1:08:43Speaker 2: and Mason Graham a little bit from Michigan's. I've already
- 1:08:47Speaker 2: got a pretty decent feel for those two guys what
- 1:08:50Speaker 2: they bring to the table. So I've got a pretty
- 1:08:52Speaker 2: to the Georgia guys. I'm impressed. Yeah, I got to
- 1:08:54Speaker 2: the Georgia guys just a couple of games. I didn't
- 1:08:55Speaker 2: do it. I didn't do all my notes on those
- 1:08:57Speaker 2: guys yet, but I just wanted to see him move
- 1:08:59Speaker 2: and see how they play. Uh. My biggest takeaway from
- 1:09:04Speaker 2: watching all these guys was I feel really strongly about
- 1:09:09Speaker 2: the Patriots cannot draft based off of need in this
- 1:09:13Speaker 2: class because I don't feel like I am pounding the
- 1:09:18Speaker 2: table for guys at positions that I know the whole
- 1:09:21Speaker 2: world wants them to draft, mainly wide receiver. But all
- 1:09:25Speaker 2: these guys, as we go through this process, all of
- 1:09:28Speaker 2: them have some wartz. I don't love the top of
- 1:09:31Speaker 2: this draft class. On offense. I don't think that there's
- 1:09:34Speaker 2: a great class on that side of the football. You
- 1:09:37Speaker 2: have guys that are tackles that might be guards, both
- 1:09:42Speaker 2: of them frankly for different reasons, but both of them.
- 1:09:47Speaker 2: And you have a player in Ted McMillan who I
- 1:09:51Speaker 2: just don't see as being on the same level as
- 1:09:55Speaker 2: like a surefire top ten pick, like a Marvin Harrison junior,
- 1:10:00Speaker 2: a Molak neighbors. Maybe he's a little bit more in
- 1:10:04Speaker 2: the same category for me, as like a Roma Dunze
- 1:10:07Speaker 2: or a Brian Thomas junior was last year. But I
- 1:10:10Speaker 2: would probably have Ted McMillan as wide receiver four at
- 1:10:14Speaker 2: best in the class last year. And to me, that matters.
- 1:10:18Speaker 2: When you're picking this high. You cannot draft a player
- 1:10:23Speaker 2: fourth overall where they stand right now, that is really
- 1:10:27Speaker 2: the fifteenth best player in the draft. You just can't
- 1:10:29Speaker 2: do it. That's how bad teams stay bad is they
- 1:10:32Speaker 2: reach on positions of need. They reach on positions that
- 1:10:36Speaker 2: are sexier than other positions just to sell fans and
- 1:10:39Speaker 2: to sell their regime on people. That is how bad
- 1:10:43Speaker 2: teams stay bad. And I'll give you one example. It's
- 1:10:47Speaker 2: not a perfect example because there was another receiver that
- 1:10:49Speaker 2: went a couple of picks after that wouldn't would have
- 1:10:52Speaker 2: made all this go away. When I watched Ted McMillan,
- 1:10:56Speaker 2: the player that I see with him is Drake London
- 1:10:58Speaker 2: in Atlanta. Drake London got drafted eighth overall by the
- 1:11:02Speaker 2: Atlanta Falcons three years ago in twenty twenty two. I
- 1:11:06Speaker 2: want to say it was that was not a good pick.
- 1:11:11Speaker 2: I understand that Drake London's an NFL player. I understand
- 1:11:14Speaker 2: that Drake Lonnon is a solid NFL player. He was
- 1:11:16Speaker 2: not worthy of the eighth overall pick in the draft.
- 1:11:19Speaker 2: He's yet to have in a thousand yard season in
- 1:11:21Speaker 2: the NFL. I worry that in this draft, if you
- 1:11:25Speaker 2: reach based off of need, that you're gonna get an okay,
- 1:11:29Speaker 2: but not great. And the Patriots right now need to
- 1:11:32Speaker 2: use their top pick on a great player. They can't
- 1:11:34Speaker 2: afford okay with the fourth overall pick. It's got to
- 1:11:38Speaker 2: be a stud. And whether that stud plays offense, if
- 1:11:41Speaker 2: plays defense, he's a corner, he's an edge rusher, wherever
- 1:11:45Speaker 2: he might play on the field. I'm in the school
- 1:11:48Speaker 2: of thought that they just need talent, man, Like, I
- 1:11:50Speaker 2: don't think it matters. I really don't think it matters.
- 1:11:53Speaker 2: You have the thirty second ranked defense, you have the
- 1:11:56Speaker 2: thirty first ranked offense in DVOA Like. You need help
- 1:12:00Speaker 2: on both sides of the football. So if it's an
- 1:12:02Speaker 2: edge rusher this year, even though wide receiver might be
- 1:12:06Speaker 2: a bigger need to some people, I think this is
- 1:12:08Speaker 2: the year that you have to go where the talent is.
- 1:12:11Speaker 2: So I don't necessarily disagree with that.
- 1:12:13Speaker 3: I just hate the idea of like not supporting Drake
- 1:12:16Speaker 3: May with this premium ass set.
- 1:12:18Speaker 2: And I'm leaning more toward because.
- 1:12:21Speaker 3: Like you said, they need help on offense, they need
- 1:12:22Speaker 3: help on defense, they need help everywhere. Yeah, I'm opening
- 1:12:26Speaker 3: up more and more to the idea, and the quarterbacks
- 1:12:28Speaker 3: aren't helping them. But I'm opening up more and more
- 1:12:30Speaker 3: to the idea of like trade down, like wherever they
- 1:12:34Speaker 3: are that picks probably not going to be worth the
- 1:12:38Speaker 3: player you're getting with that pick is not going to
- 1:12:40Speaker 3: be worth the haull you can get in return. And
- 1:12:43Speaker 3: a lot of these guys we've talked about, the guys
- 1:12:47Speaker 3: that you know you might take there just off of
- 1:12:50Speaker 3: best player available. There's other really good players at those
- 1:12:53Speaker 3: positions not that far behind. This draft is very There
- 1:12:58Speaker 3: aren't a lot of good positions. The positions that are
- 1:13:01Speaker 3: good are very good, but there's not a lot of
- 1:13:03Speaker 3: good positions. So like, for instance, the one I've been
- 1:13:07Speaker 3: big on with this is Mason Graham. Mason Graham's a
- 1:13:09Speaker 3: really good player. This is a pretty good defensive tackle class.
- 1:13:14Speaker 3: And if you're telling me I can have Mason Graham,
- 1:13:17Speaker 3: or I can have two first round picks next year
- 1:13:19Speaker 3: in a much better class, and maybe another top fifty
- 1:13:21Speaker 3: pick this year and a guy like Dean Walker from Kentucky.
- 1:13:25Speaker 3: That's a no brainer to me. I'm taking the Hall,
- 1:13:28Speaker 3: So I think that that it becomes I haven't been
- 1:13:32Speaker 3: We'll see where Will Campbell's arms are at.
- 1:13:33Speaker 2: If he's over thirty three.
- 1:13:34Speaker 3: Inches, stretch those freaking If he's over thirty three inches,
- 1:13:37Speaker 3: I'm pounding the table for Wial Campbell. I think to
- 1:13:39Speaker 3: take Will Campbell, and because at that point, everybody knows
- 1:13:41Speaker 3: his arms that long, and he's gonna be that high
- 1:13:43Speaker 3: of a pick, right, And I don't think there's many
- 1:13:45Speaker 3: other issues with him beyond the armline. The penalty is
- 1:13:47Speaker 3: the one thing that make me nervous. But like Ted McMillan,
- 1:13:51Speaker 3: I'm almost better off with the Hall. So I'm at
- 1:13:53Speaker 3: the point where, yeah, there's some very good players top
- 1:13:55Speaker 3: of the board, and you're not moving down that far.
- 1:13:57Speaker 3: I'm not saying move down there at four as we
- 1:13:59Speaker 3: sit here today, I think right four or five. I'm
- 1:14:01Speaker 3: not saying move down from four to twenty, right, But
- 1:14:03Speaker 3: if you move down to like four or eight to
- 1:14:06Speaker 3: eight or nine, and you add a future first Abdull
- 1:14:09Speaker 3: Carter still might be in play at that point, so
- 1:14:12Speaker 3: the burden James Pearce might still be in play. Mason
- 1:14:15Speaker 3: Graham might still be in play at that point because
- 1:14:17Speaker 3: he doesn't play premium position.
- 1:14:18Speaker 2: Yeah, this is this is a trade down draft.
- 1:14:21Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 1:14:21Speaker 2: So the issue though, is that everybody knows it's a
- 1:14:24Speaker 2: trade down draft. So you're really gonna have to get
- 1:14:27Speaker 2: a team that falls in love with one of these quarterbacks.
- 1:14:30Speaker 2: And I do think there's a chance that Shador, Sanders
- 1:14:32Speaker 2: and cam Ward are one of those guys. I do
- 1:14:35Speaker 2: you know, I was watching Travis Hunter yesterday. I tweeted
- 1:14:37Speaker 2: it out like I was really impressed with what I
- 1:14:39Speaker 2: saw from Shador and the tape that I was watching
- 1:14:42Speaker 2: of Colorado's offense, Like he's got the traits that teams
- 1:14:46Speaker 2: look for now that we talked a lot about with Drake,
- 1:14:49Speaker 2: like arm talent, pocket poison, mobility, off script ability, just
- 1:14:54Speaker 2: general playmaking style that teams covet right now in the league.
- 1:14:58Speaker 2: And his processing is a little bit raw. He I
- 1:15:02Speaker 2: think the arm talent is probably B plus and not
- 1:15:04Speaker 2: a but like all the things are there for him
- 1:15:07Speaker 2: to be a really pro.
- 1:15:09Speaker 3: I'm gonna give you this is where I said earlier,
- 1:15:10Speaker 3: I had a college football playoff take I wanted to give.
- 1:15:12Speaker 3: This is where this comes into play, and I'll have
- 1:15:15Speaker 3: something up. Oh no, I wrote this today on ninety
- 1:15:17Speaker 3: eight five Sports of dot Com. So those are the
- 1:15:20Speaker 3: two quarterbacks right now. Should Sanders cam Ward. I don't
- 1:15:22Speaker 3: know how much Camward you've watched. You're gonna need to
- 1:15:24Speaker 3: watch them because you're gonna need to watch Xavier Restreppo. Yeah,
- 1:15:27Speaker 3: he's absolutely gonna be Patriots target. Big fan of is
- 1:15:30Speaker 3: wide receiver from Miami. But those are the two guys
- 1:15:32Speaker 3: right now. I'm not saying these other quarterbacks have had
- 1:15:36Speaker 3: great years because frankly, they haven't. Jalen Milroe has not
- 1:15:38Speaker 3: had a good year. Quinn Ewers has been fined, but
- 1:15:40Speaker 3: he's been hurt. Carson Beck, I mean, geez, talk about
- 1:15:44Speaker 3: a falloff. But there is this new element to the
- 1:15:47Speaker 3: draft this year that is the college football Playoff Because
- 1:15:51Speaker 3: there are now chances and this applies beyond quarterback, but
- 1:15:55Speaker 3: just using it at quarterback, there are now chances for
- 1:15:58Speaker 3: players to impact their stocks significantly because when we do this,
- 1:16:02Speaker 3: we talk about the games that you have to watch.
- 1:16:04Speaker 3: Travis Hunter vers Tech McMillan, we talked about that as
- 1:16:07Speaker 3: a matchup, and you're gonna watch that game differently than
- 1:16:10Speaker 3: you watch Tech McMillan versus New Mexico, even though we
- 1:16:13Speaker 3: put up three hundred four yards three hundred four yards
- 1:16:16Speaker 3: four touchdowns. Yeah, but you're gonna watch right, So you're
- 1:16:17Speaker 3: gonna watch that game differently. Now, all of a sudden,
- 1:16:20Speaker 3: we're gonna have elite players against elite players, two three,
- 1:16:23Speaker 3: four more games than we'd usually have. And I go
- 1:16:26Speaker 3: back to Michael Pennox last year. Where do you think
- 1:16:29Speaker 3: Michael Pennix gets draft? And I know he had the
- 1:16:31Speaker 3: fall off against Michigan. Where does Michael Pennix get drafted?
- 1:16:34Speaker 3: If you take out the game against Texas.
- 1:16:36Speaker 2: Yeah, we talked about this a little bit yesterday. You
- 1:16:38Speaker 2: know that's I think a big thing with college football
- 1:16:41Speaker 2: playoff in general.
- 1:16:41Speaker 3: Right, So, so you have Jalen Milroe, quinn Ewers.
- 1:16:46Speaker 2: I'm on it.
- 1:16:47Speaker 3: Can I write off Carson Beck as I make this take.
- 1:16:50Speaker 2: Car I kind of write off quinn Ewers too. I
- 1:16:53Speaker 2: think Quins fine.
- 1:16:55Speaker 3: Jalen Milroe absolutely if he goes out and lights up
- 1:16:59Speaker 3: because Alabama, for whatever reason, is going to make the playoff. Yeah,
- 1:17:01Speaker 3: if he goes out and lights up Oregon, I know why.
- 1:17:04Speaker 2: But yeah, if he goes out, he lights it up
- 1:17:05Speaker 2: out there, right, Dylan Gabriel, does he have a little
- 1:17:08Speaker 2: bow nick'sish sort.
- 1:17:10Speaker 3: Of rise during the playoff? And Will Howard all right off?
- 1:17:13Speaker 3: The one other name I'll give you, and this nobody
- 1:17:16Speaker 3: has talked about him at all. I heard last year
- 1:17:18Speaker 3: when people wanted the Patriots, Oh you can pass on Drake,
- 1:17:21Speaker 3: May you pass on the quarterback? You gotta get you all.
- 1:17:23Speaker 3: You gotta get Marvin Harrison. There were two names that
- 1:17:26Speaker 3: came up a ton besides Shedder during that time. One
- 1:17:32Speaker 3: Jackson Dart No, oh my god, no Jackson. One was
- 1:17:35Speaker 3: Carson Beck He's obviously fallen off. The other one was
- 1:17:38Speaker 3: Curtis Rourke from Indiana. Everybody was all hot and bothered
- 1:17:42Speaker 3: about Curtis work last year, and I never really got
- 1:17:44Speaker 3: a straight answer as to why Curtis Rourke had a
- 1:17:47Speaker 3: very under the radar solid season in Indiana. Obviously they're
- 1:17:51Speaker 3: going to the playoff, But but now nobody's everybody want
- 1:17:54Speaker 3: to talk about him. Last year, nobody's talking about him.
- 1:17:56Speaker 3: If Curtis Rourke goes out and leads Indiana to a
- 1:17:59Speaker 3: playoff winner, two, he's gonna start getting first round buzz.
- 1:18:03Speaker 2: So the college football playoff.
- 1:18:05Speaker 3: Remember I said this at the beginning of the year,
- 1:18:07Speaker 3: the Patriots aren't taking a quarterback, but we're not done
- 1:18:09Speaker 3: doing quarterbacks.
- 1:18:11Speaker 2: Gonna be done, No, we're not because time to watch
- 1:18:14Speaker 2: all these guys. You just have to watch him the playoff.
- 1:18:16Speaker 3: Just because to Jalen Milroe or Dylan Gabriel or Curtis Rourke.
- 1:18:22Speaker 3: You want to throw in Will Howard, Carson Beck, Quinn Eewers.
- 1:18:25Speaker 3: Does one of these guys have a rise where maybe
- 1:18:28Speaker 3: a team goes yeah, take him the top five a quarterback.
- 1:18:31Speaker 3: I take him in the top five.
- 1:18:32Speaker 2: Yeah. I just really feel I'd be pretty surprised if
- 1:18:35Speaker 2: Shador isn't already there as a as a top ten guy, and.
- 1:18:39Speaker 3: Cam Ward, I think, are there. It's do one of
- 1:18:41Speaker 3: these other guys in college football players join them?
- 1:18:43Speaker 2: So you could have that You could have that trade
- 1:18:44Speaker 2: down scenario come into play with with those two guys
- 1:18:47Speaker 2: I think already. I mean Dan Bruger put out his
- 1:18:50Speaker 2: first mock draft and had both those guys in the
- 1:18:52Speaker 2: top five. So I definitely feel like I could see
- 1:18:54Speaker 2: that happening. But the problem is, you know, like Dane mentioned,
- 1:18:57Speaker 2: I believe in the piece, the Jaguars took Travis Hunter
- 1:19:01Speaker 2: number one overall, and then he had two quarterbacks at
- 1:19:04Speaker 2: two and three, and he just said, look, it's not
- 1:19:06Speaker 2: a trade up for a quarterback. That these guys are
- 1:19:08Speaker 2: so good that we're giving up hauls to trade up.
- 1:19:11Speaker 2: So the Jaguars still got stuck picking a non quarterback
- 1:19:14Speaker 2: number one.
- 1:19:15Speaker 3: The quarterbacks are are going to be dictated by like,
- 1:19:18Speaker 3: that's dictated by where the teams are, and Dane didn't
- 1:19:20Speaker 3: do trades, right, But who do you have two and
- 1:19:21Speaker 3: three Raiders and Giants?
- 1:19:22Speaker 4: I think so?
- 1:19:23Speaker 2: Yeah, the order is now so well, those are those.
- 1:19:25Speaker 3: Are quarterback teams. What happens if the Panthers end up there?
- 1:19:29Speaker 3: What happens if the Patriots there? Like that changes Shouldar
- 1:19:32Speaker 3: Sanders and cam Ward are gonna go high. But you know,
- 1:19:36Speaker 3: it's not a trade up scenario of teams two and
- 1:19:38Speaker 3: three are quarterback teams. If suddenly one of those teams
- 1:19:40Speaker 3: isn't a quarterback team, that changes everything, all right.
- 1:19:42Speaker 2: So here's what I did down that we've got the
- 1:19:44Speaker 2: big picture out of the way, which I want to
- 1:19:46Speaker 2: reiterate my stance on this. Do not pick a player
- 1:19:50Speaker 2: in the top five who's not worthy of a top
- 1:19:52Speaker 2: five pick. That's the worst thing that you can do,
- 1:19:54Speaker 2: right like that, that's just you are open to trading down, Yeah, exactly,
- 1:19:57Speaker 2: like if you want to trade down. And that's exactly
- 1:19:59Speaker 2: how I set this up, right, is I have two
- 1:20:02Speaker 2: guys that I watch that I feel like are worth
- 1:20:04Speaker 2: the top five pick in this draft is going to be.
- 1:20:06Speaker 2: And then I have a bunch of you know, a
- 1:20:08Speaker 2: handful of guys that if they were to trade down,
- 1:20:10Speaker 2: I'd be cool with taking nine. Yeah, exactly, taking in
- 1:20:12Speaker 2: that next wave.
- 1:20:13Speaker 3: I wouldn't trade out of top ten because somebody, oh,
- 1:20:15Speaker 3: you want to trade down, you don't want me at town.
- 1:20:17Speaker 2: No. I wouldn't trade past top ten. No, neither would I.
- 1:20:19Speaker 2: So my two guys that are I haven't let's call
- 1:20:22Speaker 2: it s t here right at that top of this draft. Uh,
- 1:20:25Speaker 2: the best player in the draft, bar none. I think
- 1:20:28Speaker 2: it's not particularly close that Travis Hunter is the best
- 1:20:31Speaker 2: player in the draft. He is I thought was outstanding
- 1:20:35Speaker 2: on both sides of the football. I really did as
- 1:20:38Speaker 2: a receiver, the twitch and the athleticism just jumps off
- 1:20:42Speaker 2: the film at you what I was most impressed with
- 1:20:44Speaker 2: him as a receiver, where his ball skills and his
- 1:20:46Speaker 2: feel for.
- 1:20:47Speaker 3: Zone coverage almost like he plays corner.
- 1:20:49Speaker 2: Really advanced for what I thought I was getting in.
- 1:20:52Speaker 2: I thought I was getting into a situation where they're
- 1:20:54Speaker 2: just like, he's the best athlete on the field, so
- 1:20:57Speaker 2: we're just gonna have him dabble at wide receiver. He
- 1:21:00Speaker 2: is starting to kind of learn wide receiver right, Like
- 1:21:03Speaker 2: you can see he has a great feel going over
- 1:21:05Speaker 2: the middle of the field and he's not afraid to
- 1:21:07Speaker 2: go over the middle of the field. He's got great
- 1:21:09Speaker 2: hands and ball skills at the catch point. He's made
- 1:21:12Speaker 2: some really tough catches at the catch point. And he's
- 1:21:15Speaker 2: got a real inate ability. I know he's played with
- 1:21:17Speaker 2: him forever, Yeah, but he's got a real inateability of
- 1:21:19Speaker 2: working off script with Shador And like, if you get
- 1:21:22Speaker 2: that with Drake May then that's really good, right, Like
- 1:21:24Speaker 2: that you can have that sort of connection there. The
- 1:21:27Speaker 2: one thing that I had against him at wide receiver
- 1:21:29Speaker 2: that I just didn't feel that he was like a
- 1:21:32Speaker 2: prototypical boundary x receiver, right, Yeah, Like I don't see
- 1:21:37Speaker 2: him that way a wide receiver, just because of the
- 1:21:40Speaker 2: size and like some of the rawness with his releases
- 1:21:43Speaker 2: and things like that. I don't necessarily look at him
- 1:21:46Speaker 2: as like a true X, but I think he's outstanding.
- 1:21:49Speaker 2: Where's he better? Well, I'll get to my corner. But
- 1:21:53Speaker 2: I told you, I tell you when we were recording her,
- 1:21:56Speaker 2: before we started. I think it is before we started.
- 1:21:58Speaker 2: I told you how I did this. I did pros
- 1:22:00Speaker 2: and I did cons and I did a bottom line. Yeah,
- 1:22:02Speaker 2: so let me give you corner first. Okay. At corner,
- 1:22:07Speaker 2: I feel like he has the opposite problem is what
- 1:22:08Speaker 2: he has at receiver. At corner, he is an elite
- 1:22:12Speaker 2: boundary corner, not a great slot corner, right, So you're
- 1:22:15Speaker 2: gonna play him on the boundary. I think he can
- 1:22:17Speaker 2: mirror and match with the best of them in Manta
- 1:22:19Speaker 2: man coverage. His feet are exceptionally quick. He's very twitchy
- 1:22:23Speaker 2: and smooth through his transitions. He can go out there
- 1:22:26Speaker 2: and you can cover top receivers with that cornerback tape
- 1:22:29Speaker 2: that he put in coloro. And he's a very good
- 1:22:32Speaker 2: flat or like cloud cover two corner, and he'll read
- 1:22:35Speaker 2: the quarterback size and he'll jump plays awesome ball hawk like,
- 1:22:39Speaker 2: great ball instincts and the ability to you know, click
- 1:22:42Speaker 2: and close and really close on the football in a hurry.
- 1:22:45Speaker 2: That is it pops off the film, like when he
- 1:22:48Speaker 2: has a ball come in his direction and he's got
- 1:22:51Speaker 2: to close on something to make a play on the football.
- 1:22:53Speaker 2: He is shot out of a canon, unbelievable trade for him.
- 1:22:58Speaker 2: He to me, looks like a top five pick in
- 1:23:01Speaker 2: an NFL draft should look like both positions. Really is
- 1:23:05Speaker 2: how I felt. But at corner I thought he got
- 1:23:08Speaker 2: a little bit loose in the slot and then was
- 1:23:10Speaker 2: really good on the boundary and receiver. I thought he
- 1:23:13Speaker 2: has some issues on the boundary, but is really good
- 1:23:15Speaker 2: playing off the liner in the slot. So you gotta
- 1:23:18Speaker 2: figure him out, and I know that's your big thing. Yeah,
- 1:23:20Speaker 2: my bottom line with him, I have no notes. The
- 1:23:23Speaker 2: guy's a stud. The question with him you got to
- 1:23:26Speaker 2: figure him out, right, like where is he playing in
- 1:23:29Speaker 2: all that kind of thing.
- 1:23:30Speaker 3: This is my big take on Travis Hunter. I've heard
- 1:23:32Speaker 3: a lot of people say, well, you just draft him
- 1:23:34Speaker 3: and then you figure it out, which is really easy
- 1:23:36Speaker 3: to say on the outside. You can't that can't be
- 1:23:40Speaker 3: the answer. And what is my big draft take among
- 1:23:43Speaker 3: all else, the one draft take I always go back on.
- 1:23:47Speaker 3: It's nature verse nurture. Drafting the right players only half
- 1:23:50Speaker 3: the battle. You have to properly develop him. There's been
- 1:23:52Speaker 3: a lot of very talented players that have gone to
- 1:23:54Speaker 3: bad situations with bad development plans and bottomed out. And
- 1:23:58Speaker 3: Travis Hunter is the ultimate example of this. If he's there,
- 1:24:03Speaker 3: you take him because he's that talented. Let me be clear,
- 1:24:05Speaker 3: this is not me saying don't draft draft Travis Hunter.
- 1:24:08Speaker 2: As much as you want that to be my fast
- 1:24:10Speaker 2: You're going on the fence like I'm not going on
- 1:24:11Speaker 2: the fence.
- 1:24:12Speaker 3: You can't draft him and then say all right, we'll
- 1:24:15Speaker 3: take him, then we'll feed You gotta have a plan.
- 1:24:17Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:24:18Speaker 3: Are you gonna try playing them both ways one hundred
- 1:24:19Speaker 3: percent time? I don't think that's realistic. Are you gonna
- 1:24:22Speaker 3: try playing them one hundred percent of the ways of
- 1:24:23Speaker 3: all time? If not, where's he playing?
- 1:24:24Speaker 2: Who makes that decision? Is it him? Is it you? Right?
- 1:24:27Speaker 3: How is he gonna split up his practice time? What
- 1:24:29Speaker 3: are you gonna do about himhysically? Because he does need
- 1:24:30Speaker 3: to be bigger, that's that's the one knock that like,
- 1:24:34Speaker 3: he has had a little bit of trouble with durability.
- 1:24:36Speaker 3: Now he plays their injuries. He's a tough guy, but
- 1:24:38Speaker 3: he gets hurt. And at the NFL, the players only
- 1:24:41Speaker 3: getting bigger, the hits are only getting more physical, So
- 1:24:45Speaker 3: he's not gonna hold up playing both ways. He's just not.
- 1:24:47Speaker 3: So do you PLAYM at corner where I think he's
- 1:24:50Speaker 3: a better corner. I think he's a very good receiver. Yeah,
- 1:24:52Speaker 3: he's a better corner. Do you play M at corner
- 1:24:54Speaker 3: where I think he's gonna be a dominant player for ten, twelve,
- 1:24:57Speaker 3: fifteen years. Do you playhim at receiver where maybe he
- 1:24:59Speaker 3: has more of an impact but now the injury thing,
- 1:25:01Speaker 3: the durability comes more to play, and I just I
- 1:25:04Speaker 3: don't think he's quite the like ninety nine overall corner
- 1:25:09Speaker 3: ninety overall receivers kind of where I'm at with him.
- 1:25:11Speaker 2: So I think that's fair.
- 1:25:13Speaker 3: It comes down to how much do you trust the
- 1:25:15Speaker 3: coaching staff to have the right plan. I think there
- 1:25:18Speaker 3: might be more than one plan. If you want to
- 1:25:19Speaker 3: tell me we're gonna draft him and play him at
- 1:25:21Speaker 3: corner and then kind of Marcus Jones him on offense. Yeah, Okay,
- 1:25:25Speaker 3: that's a good plan if you're gonna draft him and say,
- 1:25:27Speaker 3: we know he's a better corner, but we want to
- 1:25:28Speaker 3: do something for Drake May. We're gonna play him at
- 1:25:30Speaker 3: res receiver and maybe against certain receivers and certain matchups
- 1:25:33Speaker 3: will put him on defense, right, Like, oh, we have
- 1:25:36Speaker 3: to you know we're facing this great receiver this week.
- 1:25:38Speaker 3: We want to get him give him a chance. Okay, fine,
- 1:25:40Speaker 3: Like that's a good plan too. If the planet's just
- 1:25:43Speaker 3: we're gonna get to camp and throw him out on
- 1:25:44Speaker 3: the field and see what it looks like.
- 1:25:45Speaker 2: No, No, I am out on that. So no, my
- 1:25:48Speaker 2: biggest thing with him. Uh And again, if they draft,
- 1:25:53Speaker 2: if we get to April and it's and Travis Hunter
- 1:25:55Speaker 2: is the pick, I'm ecstatic. I think I think is
- 1:25:57Speaker 2: an absolutely terrific football player. So I'm on board. I
- 1:26:01Speaker 2: think I agree with you.
- 1:26:02Speaker 3: I also think he is going to be one of
- 1:26:04Speaker 3: the hardest development projects we've seen in the NFL, especially
- 1:26:07Speaker 3: outside the quarterback position.
- 1:26:09Speaker 2: But I know in the reward is so but but
- 1:26:12Speaker 2: there's not much work. There's not much football development that
- 1:26:15Speaker 2: needs to be done. It's all about managing it, right,
- 1:26:18Speaker 2: like where is he gonna put it goes along the
- 1:26:21Speaker 2: same thing, Like I know, but there's not like he's
- 1:26:23Speaker 2: not raw as a pro, but even just the day
- 1:26:25Speaker 2: to day of it, like to be to be elite
- 1:26:27Speaker 2: in college and to be elite and a pros are
- 1:26:29Speaker 2: two different things. Yeah, you can go out and just
- 1:26:31Speaker 2: line it up, and I mean there's some work that
- 1:26:33Speaker 2: goes into it, obviously, but think about all the hours
- 1:26:36Speaker 2: and hours and hours of film a guy like Steph
- 1:26:38Speaker 2: Gilmour watched.
- 1:26:39Speaker 3: Yeah, right to every nuance of his opponent's game every week. Yeah,
- 1:26:43Speaker 3: Can you do that and also spend enough time in
- 1:26:46Speaker 3: the offensive meeting room where you're still on the same
- 1:26:48Speaker 3: page as your quarterback? Can you what happens when you
- 1:26:51Speaker 3: do ones versus ones on one first ones in practice?
- 1:26:53Speaker 2: So, like you need to.
- 1:26:54Speaker 3: Figure that out because that is where you go. You
- 1:26:58Speaker 3: go back and forth between getting a good player and
- 1:27:01Speaker 3: getting a great player. That is gonna be the difference
- 1:27:03Speaker 3: with Travis Hunter. It's gonna be how the coaching staff
- 1:27:05Speaker 3: utilizes him and what they ask him to do. That's
- 1:27:08Speaker 3: what the pick comes down to. I still take him.
- 1:27:10Speaker 2: I still take a good plan. Here's what I would do, Yeah,
- 1:27:13Speaker 2: so assuming that he doesn't do any of the college
- 1:27:16Speaker 2: All Star games, and I think is a safe assumption.
- 1:27:18Speaker 2: Now I'll go I think he's going to the shrine,
- 1:27:20Speaker 2: but to like do interviews. I know shador Is, I didn't.
- 1:27:22Speaker 2: I don't know if Travis oh I might be thinking
- 1:27:24Speaker 2: of Yeah. Uh so let's just say first point of
- 1:27:29Speaker 2: contact the combine. Yeah, all right, that's the biggest question
- 1:27:33Speaker 2: in the room is what position do you want to play?
- 1:27:35Speaker 2: And if the answer is both, then you have to
- 1:27:39Speaker 2: be real with them, like you're what you just said, right,
- 1:27:42Speaker 2: you can't. We don't feel as an organization. And I'm
- 1:27:45Speaker 2: I'm speaking on behalf of the organization, right, I'm just
- 1:27:49Speaker 2: is just my scenario. If I'm in the room, I'm
- 1:27:52Speaker 2: gonna say to him, we don't really feel like it's
- 1:27:56Speaker 2: feasible for you to play both ways. Well, I don't
- 1:27:59Speaker 2: want to put words in your mouth. Do you feel
- 1:28:00Speaker 2: that way? I don't feel that way. No, you think
- 1:28:03Speaker 2: he can play both ways one hundred percent, not one
- 1:28:04Speaker 2: hundred percent, but I think that yours. There's a path
- 1:28:07Speaker 2: for him to play both ways in some capacity. But
- 1:28:09Speaker 2: I say the difference to me between him and Marcus
- 1:28:12Speaker 2: Jones is Marcus Jones is a great ball carrier. Travis
- 1:28:16Speaker 2: Hunter is good after the catch, but he's not this
- 1:28:19Speaker 2: like gadget player goes putting him on offense to play
- 1:28:23Speaker 2: actual wide, but it.
- 1:28:24Speaker 3: Goes back to putting in the time to have chemistry
- 1:28:27Speaker 3: with the quarterback.
- 1:28:28Speaker 2: Yeah A, that that's right. That that's my point too,
- 1:28:31Speaker 2: is that like this isn't like we're gonna just throw
- 1:28:33Speaker 2: him out there to throw a screen to him, right,
- 1:28:35Speaker 2: Like this is like he's gonna run routes.
- 1:28:37Speaker 3: But that's all the more reason that he needs to
- 1:28:39Speaker 3: spend significant.
- 1:28:40Speaker 2: Time with you. Yeah, yeah, I'm agreeing with so.
- 1:28:41Speaker 3: But he can't do that and spend significant time with the.
- 1:28:44Speaker 2: Yeah, I agree with you. So I look at it
- 1:28:46Speaker 2: and I say to Travis Hunter, first of all, you
- 1:28:50Speaker 2: need to as an organization, you need to pick a
- 1:28:53Speaker 2: side with him, Like what side do you think he's
- 1:28:55Speaker 2: the best player at?
- 1:28:56Speaker 3: Where would you if you're having him focus on one
- 1:28:58Speaker 3: where you're putting him.
- 1:29:00Speaker 2: I think I agree with you that he's a better corner.
- 1:29:03Speaker 2: I think it's more valuable for him to be a
- 1:29:05Speaker 2: better receiver. So that's what makes it tough. I'd probably
- 1:29:08Speaker 2: draft him as a receiver. Yeah, because if you draft
- 1:29:11Speaker 2: him as a receiver and it hits the way I
- 1:29:13Speaker 2: think it will, then you have a you have Jamar Chase,
- 1:29:17Speaker 2: Like you have an elite wide but he's not that
- 1:29:19Speaker 2: X outside. No, But I just mean like it, you
- 1:29:22Speaker 2: have a top ten receiver. You have the coverage dictating receiver.
- 1:29:26Speaker 3: Yeah, you have your Tuesday, And.
- 1:29:27Speaker 2: I feel like that's more valuable than having another shutdown
- 1:29:30Speaker 2: corner opposite. I'm with you. So I look at it
- 1:29:34Speaker 2: and say I'd play him at receiver. The I was really,
- 1:29:39Speaker 2: like I said, I was really surprised, and uh in
- 1:29:42Speaker 2: a good way. How instinctual he is already at wide receiver.
- 1:29:47Speaker 2: Uh that I was. Again, I just made a big
- 1:29:50Speaker 2: leap from last year to this year. I thought he
- 1:29:51Speaker 2: was just gonna be mossing guys because he was a
- 1:29:53Speaker 2: great athlete. I didn't realize that he was going to
- 1:29:55Speaker 2: be going out there and like understanding where to settle
- 1:29:58Speaker 2: in zone, yeah, and all that kind of stuff. So
- 1:30:01Speaker 2: I developed him at wide receiver. I'd send him down
- 1:30:04Speaker 2: at these at these meet and greets, and I'd say,
- 1:30:06Speaker 2: we see you as a wide receiver. If you come
- 1:30:08Speaker 2: to us, you're playing wide receiver right point blank.
- 1:30:11Speaker 3: And then you know what, I think there's room four,
- 1:30:13Speaker 3: especially when you get later in the year. Hey, we
- 1:30:16Speaker 3: have you know, all right, we're facing the Dolphins this week, right,
- 1:30:19Speaker 3: they have Tua and or they have Hill and Waddle. Yeah,
- 1:30:23Speaker 3: we're gonna put you out there like fifty percent of
- 1:30:25Speaker 3: the time on defense this week.
- 1:30:26Speaker 2: And then he has.
- 1:30:28Speaker 3: Third down, right or third down and maybe maybe you
- 1:30:31Speaker 3: you decrease this role offensively that week a little bit.
- 1:30:34Speaker 2: Right.
- 1:30:34Speaker 3: I think it's I would do it as a week
- 1:30:35Speaker 3: to week thing, but I would have him like in camp,
- 1:30:38Speaker 3: you're playing receiver.
- 1:30:39Speaker 2: Yeah, So the last thing I want to say on
- 1:30:41Speaker 2: Travishun and then we should move. Uh. The other thing
- 1:30:44Speaker 2: that I would assume, and this is just an assumption,
- 1:30:47Speaker 2: is that he's going to want to play wide receiver.
- 1:30:49Speaker 2: I think so because the money is that wide receiver.
- 1:30:51Speaker 2: So he's gonna know I can be a thirty million
- 1:30:54Speaker 2: dollar wide receiver or I can be a fifteen million
- 1:30:57Speaker 2: dollar corner. And knowing his background and knowing the dion's
- 1:31:00Speaker 2: in his ear and all that kind of stuff. So
- 1:31:02Speaker 2: I think this is gonna work itself out.
- 1:31:03Speaker 3: Is I guess we're out going that'd be like, if
- 1:31:05Speaker 3: I'm advising him for whatever this is worth, I would say,
- 1:31:08Speaker 3: you could be a thirty million dollar wide receiver on
- 1:31:10Speaker 3: one big contract, or you can play corner for fifteen
- 1:31:13Speaker 3: years and get like four to twenty million dollar contract.
- 1:31:15Speaker 2: Right.
- 1:31:16Speaker 3: But my one other thing is it's not gonna matter
- 1:31:21Speaker 3: because he's going first overall, and I don't think they're
- 1:31:23Speaker 3: getting over I.
- 1:31:23Speaker 2: Don't know if it's not gonna matter. They could lose that.
- 1:31:25Speaker 3: They still have I know, but they have what three
- 1:31:27Speaker 3: four teams ahead of them.
- 1:31:28Speaker 2: They have three teams ahead of them. They're all one
- 1:31:30Speaker 2: loss ahead of them, and that and those teams have
- 1:31:32Speaker 2: some head to heads against each other. So it's a
- 1:31:36Speaker 2: Giants still, it's possible. Anyways, the Giants still play. They
- 1:31:40Speaker 2: play the Ravens, the Falcons, the Colts, and the Eagles.
- 1:31:43Speaker 2: That's pretty tough, yep. And then again that's a quarterback team.
- 1:31:46Speaker 2: So so uh long, long way to it, you know,
- 1:31:49Speaker 2: long way to Grahama's house here on Travis Hunter uh
- 1:31:52Speaker 2: Studd No notes yep, great football player, no notes, nope, none,
- 1:31:59Speaker 2: film notes no none, none on either side. Like he's
- 1:32:02Speaker 2: gonna be good. Like there's things that I can nitpick
- 1:32:04Speaker 2: about both things, Like I don't think he's great on
- 1:32:07Speaker 2: the outside receiver. I don't think that he's great on
- 1:32:09Speaker 2: the inside of a corner. I don't really care. I
- 1:32:12Speaker 2: think he's awesome. That's it all right, Next guy, this
- 1:32:15Speaker 2: one comes with his asterisk, but just off talent alone
- 1:32:19Speaker 2: and watching it on the film. Will Campbell is a
- 1:32:21Speaker 2: top five pick in an NFL draft. Okay, he just is. Okay,
- 1:32:25Speaker 2: he What I think is the best part about Will
- 1:32:28Speaker 2: Campbell to me is he's got that package of foot speed,
- 1:32:34Speaker 2: body control power at the point of attack right, like
- 1:32:37Speaker 2: he's got it, Like you just watch him move and
- 1:32:41Speaker 2: he's explosive out of his stance. He can mirror pass
- 1:32:44Speaker 2: rushers on the edge, like some of the clips that
- 1:32:46Speaker 2: I posted, what game was that against South Carolina where
- 1:32:49Speaker 2: he's just mirroring those guys is just absurd, Like it's
- 1:32:51Speaker 2: just crazy how well he can mirror guys on an
- 1:32:55Speaker 2: island in pass protection. And he also has a really
- 1:32:58Speaker 2: great anchor and like you really don't go through him
- 1:33:00Speaker 2: too often either, Like he's he really is very stout
- 1:33:04Speaker 2: and like you can just see it right like from
- 1:33:06Speaker 2: in his lower half, how stout he is just technically sound, athletic,
- 1:33:11Speaker 2: all of it.
- 1:33:11Speaker 5: Like he is.
- 1:33:12Speaker 2: He's a blue chip offensive line prospect. Of course, the
- 1:33:16Speaker 2: astra is the arm light. But I find this whole
- 1:33:21Speaker 2: thing to be insufferable frankly about this conversation with Will Campbell,
- 1:33:25Speaker 2: because it's almost like knocking the player right for the
- 1:33:28Speaker 2: fact that he was not born with longer arms. And
- 1:33:32Speaker 2: also I just find it insufferable because I think it's
- 1:33:34Speaker 2: way overthinking it with him. And that's why I was
- 1:33:38Speaker 2: glad to see that Brugler just gave him to the
- 1:33:40Speaker 2: Patriots at fourth overall and didn't overthink that's that freaking pick.
- 1:33:44Speaker 2: He to me, Will Campbell is a stud I told
- 1:33:49Speaker 2: you earlier that I would have it was a little
- 1:33:50Speaker 2: recency biased. I kind of digested a little bit more.
- 1:33:54Speaker 2: I probably would still have Joe Alds ahead of him,
- 1:33:56Speaker 2: just because of the measurables, Like joeald was cut from
- 1:33:59Speaker 2: freaking chiseled yeah, to play tackle right, like six eight
- 1:34:03Speaker 2: three thirty thirty four inch arms like just check check, check,
- 1:34:06Speaker 2: check check. Will Campbell doesn't do that. But I think
- 1:34:09Speaker 2: he would be right there for me. He does besides
- 1:34:11Speaker 2: the arms six six three thirty Yeah, he'd be right
- 1:34:14Speaker 2: there for me in terms of you know, Alt Campbell
- 1:34:18Speaker 2: for Shanu, I think for sure.
- 1:34:19Speaker 3: So let's say they end up with a second pick. Yeah,
- 1:34:21Speaker 3: Travis Hunter's gone. Yeah, thirty three inch arms he taken
- 1:34:24Speaker 3: Will Campbell.
- 1:34:25Speaker 2: I can't trade out you. Well, that's an option, but
- 1:34:29Speaker 2: you can.
- 1:34:29Speaker 3: If you trade out, your probably not getting Will campb
- 1:34:31Speaker 3: If he his thirty three inch arms, I'm probably taking him,
- 1:34:36Speaker 3: all right, thirty two and seven eighths?
- 1:34:40Speaker 2: Is he good? Set the meter? I'm taking him. If
- 1:34:43Speaker 2: it's thirty two and seven eights, we're talking about an
- 1:34:45Speaker 2: eighth of an inch, And if that's what you're caught
- 1:34:47Speaker 2: up on, then your looney tunes. Okay, So I'm taking
- 1:34:49Speaker 2: him at an eighth of an inch. But I I
- 1:34:51Speaker 2: sigh and I pause because I know that it's gonna
- 1:34:54Speaker 2: be insufferable, Like it's gonna be a pain in the ass,
- 1:34:58Speaker 2: Right it was. I told you the other day. I
- 1:35:00Speaker 2: wasn't explaining this.
- 1:35:01Speaker 3: I was giving a take the cutoff. The benchmark was
- 1:35:04Speaker 3: thirty four inches until Rashaun Slater showed up and was
- 1:35:07Speaker 3: a very good tackle with thirty three inch arms. Will Campbell,
- 1:35:11Speaker 3: to me, is the kind of guy that could maybe
- 1:35:12Speaker 3: reset the benchmark again. I think he's that talented. Doesn't
- 1:35:15Speaker 3: mean every guy with thirty two and seven eighth inch
- 1:35:17Speaker 3: arms can play tackle. I think Will Campbell probably could
- 1:35:20Speaker 3: if it's like thirty two and a half right now,
- 1:35:22Speaker 3: we're talking Peter Skronski territory. Okay, But I have some
- 1:35:27Speaker 3: flexibility with Will Campbell.
- 1:35:28Speaker 2: I think he's that good.
- 1:35:29Speaker 5: Really.
- 1:35:29Speaker 3: The only thing that worries me with him because he's
- 1:35:31Speaker 3: got the leadership quotient he plays.
- 1:35:34Speaker 2: I didn't even mention that.
- 1:35:35Speaker 3: I did.
- 1:35:36Speaker 2: You got all excited about the seven. So this this thing,
- 1:35:39Speaker 2: this is super cool. You usually hate this. No, I'm
- 1:35:42Speaker 2: so surprised you're into not because not when it comes
- 1:35:45Speaker 2: to offensive lineman, because offense. Playing offensive line is a mentality,
- 1:35:49Speaker 2: like you have to have a mindset to play that position.
- 1:35:52Speaker 2: And the one of the reasons why I'm swimming over
- 1:35:54Speaker 2: Will Campbell is because he he has that like he
- 1:35:58Speaker 2: has that intangible quality.
- 1:36:00Speaker 3: Well he might be he's probably a nice, kidding person.
- 1:36:01Speaker 3: He's a mean, nasty guy.
- 1:36:03Speaker 2: He's nasty. He wants to kill you. He wants to
- 1:36:06Speaker 2: kill your family. He wants to take your your kids
- 1:36:08Speaker 2: out behind the woodshed along with you, Like this guy
- 1:36:11Speaker 2: is nasty as tough as nails. And the seventh thing
- 1:36:14Speaker 2: is so cool to me because LSU explain the seven.
- 1:36:18Speaker 2: So at LSU, the seven is the best playmaker on the.
- 1:36:21Speaker 3: Rocket is awarded by the coaching staff. You cannot choose
- 1:36:24Speaker 3: number seven, the coaches say at the beginning of every year. Yeah,
- 1:36:27Speaker 3: the best playmaker on the offense gets seven.
- 1:36:28Speaker 2: Khan had that. I think it's best playmaker on the
- 1:36:32Speaker 2: eighteen on defense. I thought Patrick Peterson wore seven.
- 1:36:35Speaker 3: Oh there's an eighteen too.
- 1:36:36Speaker 2: I forget what that is. Maybe it's best on the team.
- 1:36:38Speaker 2: Hang on all Yeah, fine, so I thought it because
- 1:36:40Speaker 2: I know Patrick Peterson wore it and Leonard Fournette wore it,
- 1:36:42Speaker 2: I think. And to have a program like LSU that
- 1:36:47Speaker 2: is just a factory of skill player. You're right, eighteen
- 1:36:51Speaker 2: is best leader. Seven is best playmaker either side.
- 1:36:53Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 1:36:54Speaker 2: So to have a program like LSU, that's just a
- 1:36:56Speaker 2: factory of great NFL players.
- 1:36:58Speaker 3: As you explained, I give you some sevens Pat Peterson,
- 1:37:01Speaker 3: Tyron Matthew, Leonard Fournette, DJ Shark, Jonathan Giles, Grant Delpin.
- 1:37:05Speaker 2: Yeah. So not all of them have panned out to
- 1:37:07Speaker 2: be fair, but to have LSU give a offensive lineman
- 1:37:12Speaker 2: the seven, first time it's ever happened. Best playmaker gets
- 1:37:15Speaker 2: the seven from the offensive line, and then he's not
- 1:37:18Speaker 2: eligible to wear seven in the game because he's an
- 1:37:21Speaker 2: offensive lineman, so he wears it as a patch on
- 1:37:24Speaker 2: his jersey.
- 1:37:24Speaker 3: That is freaking awesome. That is That is the kind
- 1:37:27Speaker 3: of thing you usually roll your eyes in.
- 1:37:29Speaker 2: Because not because that's what that's what you want to
- 1:37:32Speaker 2: hear when you're drafting an offensive lineman and he's a playmaker. Yeah,
- 1:37:35Speaker 2: he's a playmaker that changes your line.
- 1:37:38Speaker 3: That's a Pennay soul kind of thing, right, So yeah,
- 1:37:41Speaker 3: outside of the arm length, like and I'm willing to
- 1:37:43Speaker 3: be flexible there, like I to me, he's the guy.
- 1:37:46Speaker 3: The only thing that gave me any semblance of pause
- 1:37:48Speaker 3: this year's penalties.
- 1:37:49Speaker 2: Yes, that was it. He gets opened up a little
- 1:37:52Speaker 2: bit in his past sets, but it's fixable in my mind,
- 1:37:54Speaker 2: Like it's it's just a technique thing. I don't think
- 1:37:56Speaker 2: it's anything too serious.
- 1:37:57Speaker 3: He played three years in the SEC, started as a
- 1:38:00Speaker 3: true freshman, started three full seasons. He allowed a sack
- 1:38:03Speaker 3: in his first game, He allowed a sack in his
- 1:38:05Speaker 3: last game. He allowed one sack the entire time in between.
- 1:38:08Speaker 2: Yeah, two years without a sack base, basically two.
- 1:38:10Speaker 3: Years in that sack in the SEC. The guy's freaking
- 1:38:13Speaker 3: special man.
- 1:38:14Speaker 2: Yeah, and I was thirty two and seven ages.
- 1:38:21Speaker 3: Like you said, if you're gonna take a guy in
- 1:38:22Speaker 3: the top five, he needs to have top five talent.
- 1:38:25Speaker 3: Will Campbell his top five talent.
- 1:38:26Speaker 2: Yeah, So last thing on Will Campbell, then we'll move again.
- 1:38:29Speaker 2: I just look at it to a little bit, and
- 1:38:32Speaker 2: I look at Drake and even Christian Gonzales. I am
- 1:38:36Speaker 2: all aboard the early declare train. At this point in
- 1:38:40Speaker 2: the draft, true junior is coming out. That means that
- 1:38:44Speaker 2: you're a stud.
- 1:38:44Speaker 3: Well, this class is all true juniors. It's like an
- 1:38:46Speaker 3: insane number of.
- 1:38:48Speaker 2: Yeah, that means you're the real deal. It didn't take
- 1:38:51Speaker 2: you six years in college to get to this point.
- 1:38:53Speaker 2: You did it in three and you're already a top
- 1:38:56Speaker 2: ten prospect in the NFL.
- 1:38:57Speaker 3: There's so many true juniors in this class. It's an
- 1:38:59Speaker 3: insane night.
- 1:38:59Speaker 2: And I know you love this. It's a little bit
- 1:39:01Speaker 2: like Drake too, where like his his sophomore season was
- 1:39:05Speaker 2: maybe even better than his junior season. You know, I
- 1:39:08Speaker 2: thought Will Campbell last year was like, Okay, this guy's
- 1:39:11Speaker 2: going to be a top five pick in the draft
- 1:39:13Speaker 2: last year if he was able to come out and
- 1:39:15Speaker 2: he was eligible. Now this year, he just did what
- 1:39:18Speaker 2: he needed to do.
- 1:39:19Speaker 3: I say, Garrett nuss Meyer's a much harder quarterback.
- 1:39:23Speaker 2: To block franchise Terris.
- 1:39:25Speaker 3: Garrett nuss Meyer has no concept of the pocket.
- 1:39:28Speaker 2: It's atrocious. Yeah. Okay, So that's Will Campbell. Yeah, bottom line,
- 1:39:34Speaker 2: high level blocker, elite foot speed, body control, but just
- 1:39:38Speaker 2: might not be long enough for tackle. That's that's it, right,
- 1:39:41Speaker 2: It's just that butt. It's just that butt.
- 1:39:43Speaker 3: So the combine technically begins on the twenty seventh. Yeah,
- 1:39:47Speaker 3: so that would put offensive line measurements I think March
- 1:39:50Speaker 3: March second.
- 1:39:51Speaker 2: Yeah, big day circle it. Okay, So here is my
- 1:39:55Speaker 2: next wave here, and this is like if the Patriots
- 1:39:59Speaker 2: were to trade down, I feel comfortable with drafting one
- 1:40:02Speaker 2: of these three players, and I put him in order
- 1:40:04Speaker 2: because you know I like this.
- 1:40:05Speaker 3: So wait, I know you said you didn't watch him,
- 1:40:07Speaker 3: but from what you're familiar with, where do you put
- 1:40:09Speaker 3: Will Johnson?
- 1:40:10Speaker 4: Uh?
- 1:40:11Speaker 2: Probably in this list? Okay. I think the big thing
- 1:40:14Speaker 2: that I see with Will Johnson is long speed I
- 1:40:16Speaker 2: know that's been something that's come up with people. If
- 1:40:19Speaker 2: you're gonna play on the boundary in the NFL, you
- 1:40:21Speaker 2: have to be able to run, like you have to
- 1:40:22Speaker 2: be Christian Gonzales, like, you have to be able to
- 1:40:24Speaker 2: carry everything. Travis Hunter can carry everything. I don't know
- 1:40:27Speaker 2: if Will Johnson's like it's not terrible, Like, yeah, but
- 1:40:30Speaker 2: it's not. I mean, he was projected as the top
- 1:40:32Speaker 2: pick in this draft. Yeah, that's why I ask. Okay,
- 1:40:34Speaker 2: so I put I put these guys in order, Uh,
- 1:40:38Speaker 2: my next guy on my wish list here, and this
- 1:40:41Speaker 2: is the trade down category. Right, So we're going from
- 1:40:44Speaker 2: FORDA to eight or nine or ten, and we're drafting
- 1:40:46Speaker 2: this guy. I'm not drafting this guy at four. Abdul
- 1:40:49Speaker 2: Carter from Penn State. I h I was really impressed.
- 1:40:54Speaker 2: My one caveat with it for him is really more
- 1:40:59Speaker 2: about them, right Like, are you gonna draft as the Patriots?
- 1:41:03Speaker 5: Like?
- 1:41:03Speaker 2: Are the Patriots now into up the field rushers? Right? Like?
- 1:41:06Speaker 2: Is that now a thing that they're subscribing to? Because
- 1:41:10Speaker 2: when I watch when I watched Abdul Carter, his style
- 1:41:14Speaker 2: of play is not is not a Belichick style of play.
- 1:41:18Speaker 2: He is a up the field, downhill, hair on fire,
- 1:41:23Speaker 2: coming around the edge. That's how he plays. If you
- 1:41:26Speaker 2: need want a guy to like post up on the
- 1:41:28Speaker 2: edge and set the edge of the defense ends and
- 1:41:30Speaker 2: hold the point of it like an Anthony Jennings. Right,
- 1:41:33Speaker 2: he's not that, But this guy is Matthew jud replaced.
- 1:41:37Speaker 2: This guy has twitched up as hell, Like this guy
- 1:41:39Speaker 2: is shot out of a cannon. Excellent bend around the
- 1:41:43Speaker 2: corner as well, closing bursts to the quarterback. Like he's
- 1:41:45Speaker 2: got that ability to corner and just close on the
- 1:41:48Speaker 2: quarterback and get him on the ground. Like some of
- 1:41:50Speaker 2: the tape that you watch against him, you know, against
- 1:41:53Speaker 2: your boy Ursery just kind of ate his lunch. Ohio
- 1:41:56Speaker 2: States tackles ate their lunch third Maryland last week was absurd, right, like,
- 1:42:03Speaker 2: you know, just every single week, this guy's putting up numbers.
- 1:42:06Speaker 2: But like I said, awesome, awesome pass rusher, screamer twitched
- 1:42:12Speaker 2: up off the edge, But he's not He's not an eddsetter.
- 1:42:15Speaker 2: He's a pass rusher. He's an up the field player.
- 1:42:19Speaker 2: Are the Patriots into that sort of thing? And now
- 1:42:21Speaker 2: is that a is that a new turning a new lead?
- 1:42:24Speaker 2: Well it kind of worked with judea On, so you'd
- 1:42:26Speaker 2: have to. But like jud On was a veteran, proven
- 1:42:29Speaker 2: player in this league, are you going to have a
- 1:42:30Speaker 2: rookie that kind of freedom?
- 1:42:31Speaker 3: That's a fair question. The other thing with me, and
- 1:42:34Speaker 3: by the way, this is a theme for a lot
- 1:42:35Speaker 3: of guys in this draft. Yeah, it's consistency. Like he
- 1:42:37Speaker 3: had a pretty pedestrian start to the season and then
- 1:42:40Speaker 3: the last month and a half just went on an
- 1:42:43Speaker 3: absolute heater even though Maryland sucks in Ohio again, was
- 1:42:46Speaker 3: like using their third string right guard as a left tackle.
- 1:42:49Speaker 3: But no, he can he can play, he can get
- 1:42:52Speaker 3: after the quarterback. He's a modern rusher, something that teams
- 1:42:55Speaker 3: are gonna have to decide when they look at the
- 1:42:57Speaker 3: edge guys. We talked about this with James Pierce, who
- 1:43:00Speaker 3: was the top pass rusher coming into this class and
- 1:43:02Speaker 3: had a rough year. It's more extreme with James Piers.
- 1:43:06Speaker 3: James Pierce is a pass rush specialist. James Pearce is
- 1:43:09Speaker 3: not a three down player. Now, he's damn good to
- 1:43:11Speaker 3: getting to the quarterback. But are you going to use
- 1:43:14Speaker 3: a top fifteen pick on a guy that is a
- 1:43:18Speaker 3: situational player?
- 1:43:19Speaker 2: Now? Carter projects more as a run defender. Yeah, he's
- 1:43:22Speaker 2: not gonna give you much that he wins, but he
- 1:43:24Speaker 2: wins in the run game with quickness. Right, he's gonna
- 1:43:27Speaker 2: slip blocks and he's gonna jump gaps and things like that.
- 1:43:29Speaker 3: He is the opportunity to become a three down player,
- 1:43:31Speaker 3: but he's probably not right away.
- 1:43:33Speaker 2: So that's the other thing.
- 1:43:34Speaker 3: And it goes to your point about play style, like
- 1:43:35Speaker 3: that's gonna come with an adjustment. You just have to
- 1:43:38Speaker 3: ask yourself how he projects as a three down player,
- 1:43:40Speaker 3: and your your say, whatever team drafts him, whatever team's
- 1:43:43Speaker 3: evaluating him, you have to project either how he fits
- 1:43:46Speaker 3: the three down player in your defense or do you
- 1:43:48Speaker 3: go to the James Pierce extreme and just say, maybe
- 1:43:51Speaker 3: he's just a situational rusher, but he's so good, we'll
- 1:43:54Speaker 3: use the pick where.
- 1:43:54Speaker 2: We use the pick. Had some just unreal moments of
- 1:43:58Speaker 2: speed and bend around the edge where like Cackles can't
- 1:44:00Speaker 2: even get there, no tier athlete, like just eliting. And
- 1:44:04Speaker 2: you can see it too, like you know, not to
- 1:44:05Speaker 2: go all weird, but like you can see it with
- 1:44:08Speaker 2: the body type, like the lower half, like you can
- 1:44:10Speaker 2: just see the explosiveness that he has in his legs
- 1:44:13Speaker 2: off the ball. Just a really fun player to watch it.
- 1:44:16Speaker 2: And another guy we talked about this, you know, another
- 1:44:19Speaker 2: college football playoff guy, right, like you know you can
- 1:44:21Speaker 2: see him have have even more good games against good competition.
- 1:44:24Speaker 2: They're gonna be the college football playoff, right, pen State
- 1:44:27Speaker 2: Penn State? Yeah yeah there so he'll I've and I
- 1:44:30Speaker 2: mean there's a chance we get Penn State Texas. Yeah.
- 1:44:32Speaker 2: So Kelvin Banks Abdual Carter Right, that's again like that
- 1:44:35Speaker 2: game is going to mean so much for both players
- 1:44:38Speaker 2: stocks yep, all right. Next on the list, Yeah, TEP McMillan.
- 1:44:42Speaker 2: So I like Tech macmillan, I don't love TEP McMillan.
- 1:44:47Speaker 2: I don't feel the same way about TEP McMillan as
- 1:44:49Speaker 2: I did. Marvin Harrison Junior and Melik Neighbors last year
- 1:44:52Speaker 2: not the same caliber. Like you know, look, Marvin Harrison
- 1:44:56Speaker 2: Junior wasn't like a burner either, but like when better
- 1:44:59Speaker 2: comparison to me, you know you look at in terms
- 1:45:02Speaker 2: of body type than Melik Neighbors obviously, but like when
- 1:45:05Speaker 2: you would watch you know, Neighbors at LSU, like that
- 1:45:09Speaker 2: guy just moves different, right, you can just see it.
- 1:45:11Speaker 2: That's what I want to see when I watch a
- 1:45:13Speaker 2: first round pick in the top ten at a wide receiver.
- 1:45:16Speaker 2: I want to see a guy that is just a
- 1:45:19Speaker 2: tier athlete and moves different than everybody else on the field.
- 1:45:22Speaker 2: And I just didn't necessarily see that with Ted. And
- 1:45:25Speaker 2: I think the biggest thing to me is that you
- 1:45:28Speaker 2: have to understand what you're drafting when you draft Ted
- 1:45:31Speaker 2: mc millan. And my concern with it is is that
- 1:45:34Speaker 2: you're adding another guy to this offense who's not fast,
- 1:45:37Speaker 2: like and they already have guys that are are not fast,
- 1:45:40Speaker 2: that are just like good possession, like body receivers right
- 1:45:44Speaker 2: like contested catch guys and back shoulders and I'm gonna
- 1:45:48Speaker 2: run across the middle of the field into zones and
- 1:45:50Speaker 2: like catch balls over the middle of the field. And
- 1:45:53Speaker 2: like I do like the fact that he can, you know,
- 1:45:55Speaker 2: go inside a little bit, Like you can use him
- 1:45:58Speaker 2: in the slots some to stretch the seam and to
- 1:46:00Speaker 2: run routes from the slot, which I guess can be useful.
- 1:46:03Speaker 2: And like the catch radius in the body control is excellent,
- 1:46:06Speaker 2: Like he's got that ability back shoulder, high point fade
- 1:46:09Speaker 2: work the sidelines, got great feet and you know awareness
- 1:46:13Speaker 2: of the sideline canto, those types of things. So I
- 1:46:17Speaker 2: see a lot of Drake London. I see a little
- 1:46:19Speaker 2: bit of T Higgins in his game. As a way,
- 1:46:22Speaker 2: I think Mike Evans is on a different stratosphere. I
- 1:46:24Speaker 2: don't think that's a fair comp to anybody. Frankly, it's
- 1:46:27Speaker 2: the it's the apex of that sort of player. But
- 1:46:29Speaker 2: that's him like truly maxing out. So the question that
- 1:46:32Speaker 2: I would just have, and we all know those players
- 1:46:35Speaker 2: in the NFL, would you draft T Higgins fourth overall
- 1:46:38Speaker 2: in the draft?
- 1:46:40Speaker 3: So, I mean the Patriots, given their history at wide receiver,
- 1:46:44Speaker 3: you can get that guy.
- 1:46:45Speaker 2: I think you would. Now do you do that when
- 1:46:47Speaker 2: you can just sign to Higgins? Right? Becomes another conversation.
- 1:46:50Speaker 2: Definitely not both.
- 1:46:51Speaker 3: I know some people want to see them so too
- 1:46:53Speaker 3: a receiver. If you're gonna do that and T Higgins
- 1:46:55Speaker 3: is the guy, well, now we're talking about Travis Hunter
- 1:46:58Speaker 3: or even maybe Luther Burden.
- 1:47:01Speaker 2: I think you're under selling McMillan's speed a little bit.
- 1:47:04Speaker 3: He's not a burner. He's not gonna run the four twos.
- 1:47:07Speaker 3: He could be a low four to four guy because
- 1:47:10Speaker 3: he doesn't he doesn't look that fast because his legs
- 1:47:14Speaker 3: are so long. He's got that stride that it looks
- 1:47:17Speaker 3: effortless and the most underrated part about his game to me,
- 1:47:21Speaker 3: And maybe this doesn't go to straight line speed. He's quick,
- 1:47:24Speaker 3: he can get away from defenders with the ball in
- 1:47:26Speaker 3: his hands. He's a plus player after the catch. Usually
- 1:47:29Speaker 3: don't see that from guys that are six to five.
- 1:47:31Speaker 2: And he brings that. I agree, Like he's not slow.
- 1:47:35Speaker 2: He's not slow.
- 1:47:36Speaker 3: And to the point about they need to add speed, Yes,
- 1:47:38Speaker 3: I would like to see them add speed, But I
- 1:47:40Speaker 3: don't look at McMillan and say, all right, there's another
- 1:47:42Speaker 3: guy that's just gonna trudge around the field. Now he
- 1:47:44Speaker 3: has quickness, he can create after the catch. It's not
- 1:47:47Speaker 3: This isn't a case of you know a guy like
- 1:47:50Speaker 3: Jalen Polk, who you worry about his ability to separate
- 1:47:52Speaker 3: and he has to win those fifty to fifty balls.
- 1:47:54Speaker 3: Ted McMillan can create separation, but he's not gonna be
- 1:47:57Speaker 3: somebody again that you're just gonna have running goal balls
- 1:48:00Speaker 3: and expect him to beat the defender every time.
- 1:48:01Speaker 2: Yeah, I think that's a fair point. Like I know
- 1:48:03Speaker 2: you're right, Like I'm not trying to say he's a
- 1:48:05Speaker 2: snail out there. But I just think that when I
- 1:48:08Speaker 2: watch him, I don't see a whole lot of three level,
- 1:48:11Speaker 2: you know, third level separating what do you see?
- 1:48:13Speaker 3: But but and I know people roll their eyes at
- 1:48:15Speaker 3: this because here we go again. He's not the kind
- 1:48:17Speaker 3: of guy that needs to do that because he can
- 1:48:18Speaker 3: win at the catch point. Yeah, but they have a
- 1:48:20Speaker 3: quarterback now that can do more to take advantage of
- 1:48:22Speaker 3: a guy like that.
- 1:48:23Speaker 2: What do you see?
- 1:48:24Speaker 3: Where do you see his forty time ranging? Like, when
- 1:48:26Speaker 3: you watch him, what do you four or five see?
- 1:48:29Speaker 3: I think he can get to the mid four force.
- 1:48:31Speaker 2: If he does that, then I like I'd be impressed.
- 1:48:33Speaker 2: I think he's a four or five guy. I think
- 1:48:36Speaker 2: the best part about Ted McMillan to me is that
- 1:48:39Speaker 2: he's a really really smooth athlete for six foot five.
- 1:48:42Speaker 2: And when I watch you know guys in the past
- 1:48:45Speaker 2: that I haven't like loved at the position, Yeah, Quinton
- 1:48:48Speaker 2: Johnston for example, Keon Coleman. So so let me ask this.
- 1:48:52Speaker 3: Some people have brought up Quentin Johnston, and you were
- 1:48:54Speaker 3: very quick two years ago to say this guy is
- 1:48:56Speaker 3: not he thinks he is. How do you see McMillan
- 1:48:58Speaker 3: compared to Johnston.
- 1:48:59Speaker 2: Much better compared to them, And the reason being is
- 1:49:02Speaker 2: that one he doesn't have frying pan hands, which helps
- 1:49:06Speaker 2: actually very good. Yeah, and number two is just his smoothness.
- 1:49:09Speaker 2: Like the big thing that I was worried about when
- 1:49:12Speaker 2: I studied Quinton Johnston and when I studied Keon Coleman
- 1:49:16Speaker 2: last year is that they're very robotic in their movements.
- 1:49:19Speaker 2: They're stiff, right, And one of the things that I
- 1:49:21Speaker 2: learned from Nikhil Harry is when you see guys that
- 1:49:24Speaker 2: are like stiff like that and are like they don't
- 1:49:27Speaker 2: have a difficult time like sinking and cutting and things
- 1:49:30Speaker 2: like that, then you can't add branches to the route tree.
- 1:49:34Speaker 2: All it is is jump balls, right, There is no
- 1:49:37Speaker 2: other branches. So with Quentin Johnson, like we're seeing that
- 1:49:40Speaker 2: in Los Angeles right now, Ted McMillan is not not
- 1:49:45Speaker 2: anywhere like that. Like he's a very smooth athlete. He's
- 1:49:48Speaker 2: very smooth in and out of his brakes. He has
- 1:49:50Speaker 2: some flashes of route release and you know, ability to
- 1:49:53Speaker 2: get off the line of scrimmage. He's just not a
- 1:49:56Speaker 2: top end, like he's not a game breaker like in
- 1:49:59Speaker 2: terms of like that torpetability type of ability with speed.
- 1:50:04Speaker 2: But you mentioned the yards after catch. I do agree
- 1:50:06Speaker 2: with you there. I think he's faster with the ball
- 1:50:08Speaker 2: in his hands, which is interesting, which I do like.
- 1:50:11Speaker 2: But to me, he's gonna win. It's gonna be you know, slants, digs, comebacks,
- 1:50:18Speaker 2: back shoulders, high points, like that's gonna be his route tree. Well,
- 1:50:22Speaker 2: they have a quarterback that's pretty good with that route tree. Yeah,
- 1:50:24Speaker 2: but it's not gonna be. I'm gonna just run through
- 1:50:26Speaker 2: the defense, right, I will say this.
- 1:50:28Speaker 3: So here's how you know it's really drafts. And again
- 1:50:30Speaker 3: we're doing the rumored high school forty times. Remember we
- 1:50:32Speaker 3: did this to Johnny Wilson last year. I was like, oh,
- 1:50:34Speaker 3: he ran a four or three in high school and whatever.
- 1:50:37Speaker 3: So Tech McMillan's rumored high school forty time, yeah, is
- 1:50:41Speaker 3: four or five flat. Yeah, So okay, But if you
- 1:50:45Speaker 3: figured that's high school is also rumored that's high school.
- 1:50:47Speaker 3: If he's built on that, can he shave half a
- 1:50:49Speaker 3: second off that three.
- 1:50:51Speaker 2: Years into college? Yeah? The other weird thing.
- 1:50:53Speaker 3: The other weird thing with Tech McMillan. And I'm curious
- 1:50:55Speaker 3: to see how people react to this. You kind of
- 1:50:57Speaker 3: talked about it with Travis Hunter, but Travis Hunter just
- 1:50:59Speaker 3: a different kind of player. So Tech McMillan's quarterback at Arizona,
- 1:51:04Speaker 3: And I'm curious, now that you've watched, how you win this.
- 1:51:07Speaker 3: Tech McMillan's quarterback in arizona' a guy named Noah Fafida.
- 1:51:09Speaker 3: Noah Flafita is a solid college quarterback. This is another
- 1:51:13Speaker 3: thing real quick. The rest of that Arizona team terrible. Yeah,
- 1:51:16Speaker 3: just Notita's fine. And so consistency is the thing with
- 1:51:20Speaker 3: McMillan you're gonna look at with him, but some of
- 1:51:23Speaker 3: it is teams would just like triple cover him.
- 1:51:25Speaker 2: So yeah, in the quarterback kind of stinks like he
- 1:51:28Speaker 2: had one route. I remember that I cut where he
- 1:51:30Speaker 2: separates on the comeback and the quarterback throws at ten
- 1:51:33Speaker 2: yards over it.
- 1:51:34Speaker 3: So but here, So one thing you gotta look at
- 1:51:36Speaker 3: Ted mcmillinerson. He was getting all the attention defensively and
- 1:51:39Speaker 3: that's why you had these fifty percent of his receiving
- 1:51:41Speaker 3: yards came in three games.
- 1:51:42Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:51:42Speaker 3: But the other thing is so Fafita has been his
- 1:51:44Speaker 3: quarterback since high school. Yeah, so there's an advanced chemistry there.
- 1:51:47Speaker 3: And I'm wondering if some people are gonna look at
- 1:51:49Speaker 3: that and say, well, yeah, he looks like such a
- 1:51:51Speaker 3: great body control fifty to fifty ball receiver because him
- 1:51:54Speaker 3: and Fefida are on the same page. Is he gonna
- 1:51:56Speaker 3: have that with the next guy?
- 1:51:57Speaker 2: Yeah, they'll definitely see that too, working over the middle
- 1:51:59Speaker 2: of the field, like the anticipatory throws that the quarterback
- 1:52:02Speaker 2: just knows he's gonna be there and he just can
- 1:52:04Speaker 2: fit it into windows like that. Look, I don't hate
- 1:52:07Speaker 2: the player, I know it kind of sounds like I'm
- 1:52:09Speaker 2: down on him. I just I'm not in love where
- 1:52:12Speaker 2: I would be pounding the table at fourth overall to
- 1:52:14Speaker 2: draft him, I definitely.
- 1:52:16Speaker 3: But if it's him at eight in a future first
- 1:52:18Speaker 3: round pick, sure, Okay.
- 1:52:19Speaker 2: Yeah, I wouldn't kill him for it. I wouldn't kill
- 1:52:22Speaker 2: him a right. We gotta hurry, We got we gotta
- 1:52:24Speaker 2: wrap here on drafts. Yeah, so I got two more
- 1:52:27Speaker 2: guys or Kelvin Banks, Mason Graham. Yeah, one more guy,
- 1:52:32Speaker 2: one more guy, Kelvin Banks. Ok. Yeah, So look I
- 1:52:35Speaker 2: like Kelvin Banks. I think you can really move the
- 1:52:38Speaker 2: line of scrimmage. I think it's a strong dude. You
- 1:52:40Speaker 2: can see that I do think he's got good footwork
- 1:52:43Speaker 2: for a guy that size, pretty good in terms of
- 1:52:46Speaker 2: technically sound footwork as well. I think the two issues
- 1:52:49Speaker 2: that I saw with him on film is that he
- 1:52:51Speaker 2: falls off blocks sometimes he has a trouble sustaining blocks,
- 1:52:55Speaker 2: and maybe that speaks to some body control issues and
- 1:52:59Speaker 2: some hand placement issues, which I guess you could probably
- 1:53:01Speaker 2: work through. And then also just watching him against high
- 1:53:05Speaker 2: level pass rushers, and this is probably the biggest one.
- 1:53:09Speaker 2: He's right on the line of giving up the edge
- 1:53:12Speaker 2: a lot of the time, right Like it's getting all
- 1:53:15Speaker 2: out to that landmark to get the guy past the
- 1:53:17Speaker 2: quarterback at ten yards. It can be a struggle for him.
- 1:53:20Speaker 2: Sometimes he's flirting with it, right Like sometimes you see
- 1:53:24Speaker 2: throughout the course of the game, it'll be like ten ten, nine, eight,
- 1:53:28Speaker 2: eight and a half, you know what I mean, we're
- 1:53:30Speaker 2: trying to go down. Uh. And that is why I
- 1:53:33Speaker 2: think a lot of people have projected him to move inside,
- 1:53:36Speaker 2: because he's kind of this like blocky build, really good power,
- 1:53:41Speaker 2: good initial footwork that he's gonna be able to handle
- 1:53:43Speaker 2: interior guys. I don't know if he's like a dancing
- 1:53:46Speaker 2: bear to play on an Island, Like, I don't know
- 1:53:48Speaker 2: if I'm kicking him outside in the NFL. I kind
- 1:53:51Speaker 2: of have more concerns about him at tackle honestly than
- 1:53:53Speaker 2: I do with Will Campbell.
- 1:53:54Speaker 3: So he's the guy to me that if like you're
- 1:53:58Speaker 3: playing for Josh Simmons, which is, yeah, we draft him,
- 1:54:03Speaker 3: and because I think he's a right tackle in the NFL, yeah, certainly.
- 1:54:06Speaker 2: Yeah, I would move to the right.
- 1:54:07Speaker 3: Tackle before I move to guard. And he's one where
- 1:54:10Speaker 3: like I draft him, play him at left. Maybe you
- 1:54:13Speaker 3: don't sign Garrett Bowles, but you sign like a capable
- 1:54:15Speaker 3: bridge guy. Worst case scenario, you kick him over the
- 1:54:18Speaker 3: right side where I think he would be good, and
- 1:54:19Speaker 3: then you go back in and do left tackle next year. Now,
- 1:54:21Speaker 3: I know I said no half measures, so I'm not
- 1:54:24Speaker 3: saying I'm like endorsing that plan. But yeah, like he
- 1:54:27Speaker 3: he might be a good right tackle. I'll say that
- 1:54:30Speaker 3: the big game for him, We'll see what happens. But
- 1:54:35Speaker 3: so well, Texas is gonna play Georgia in the SC
- 1:54:38Speaker 3: Championship this week. So Michael Williams, who you said you
- 1:54:41Speaker 3: watched a little bit, Yeah, you want to get ten
- 1:54:42Speaker 3: seconds on Michael Wims, I wasn't crazy about it.
- 1:54:44Speaker 2: But also at the same time, like that Georgia's scheme
- 1:54:47Speaker 2: is really weird for defensive ends. It's it's very bellichicking.
- 1:54:50Speaker 3: Nobody gets a lot of sacks because everybody gets.
- 1:54:51Speaker 2: A yeah, and they don't really let guys get up
- 1:54:54Speaker 2: the field, and they play a lot of five techniques,
- 1:54:56Speaker 2: so he's straight up over the tackle instead of outside
- 1:54:58Speaker 2: the tackle, which is a disadvantageous rush angle and all like.
- 1:55:02Speaker 2: There's also we did this with Trayvon Locker a couple
- 1:55:05Speaker 2: of years ago. It's all the same stuff. So I
- 1:55:07Speaker 2: didn't really see it with mikel Williams that I watched
- 1:55:10Speaker 2: two games and really, did.
- 1:55:11Speaker 3: You watch the Texas game? Uh? No, Okay, so that
- 1:55:16Speaker 3: was the game that kind of sunk everybody on Calvin Banks.
- 1:55:19Speaker 3: That was Michael Williams's best game of the year. Yeah,
- 1:55:21Speaker 3: So rematch Saturday Texas Georgia. Big game for both guys.
- 1:55:26Speaker 3: And then as we get further in this thing pass
- 1:55:29Speaker 3: rushers up and down. Penn State has Abdul Carter, Georgia
- 1:55:33Speaker 3: has Michael Williams Tennessee as James Pearce. I am blanking
- 1:55:37Speaker 3: on the name of the guy from Indiana, but like
- 1:55:40Speaker 3: he's not at the top of the draft because he's undersize.
- 1:55:42Speaker 3: He's like six foot two sixty, But he led the
- 1:55:45Speaker 3: Big ten and pressures this year and I wish I
- 1:55:47Speaker 3: could remember his name. Obviously, Alabama has guys if they
- 1:55:50Speaker 3: get there. Yeah, Kelvin Banks may be in the best
- 1:55:54Speaker 3: position of any of the guys we've talked about because
- 1:55:56Speaker 3: he's gonna have so many chances to prove what he
- 1:55:59Speaker 3: can do against high level NFL caliber players. However long
- 1:56:02Speaker 3: the Texas run lasts, I think it's gonna last. I
- 1:56:05Speaker 3: don't know they're gonna win the national championship.
- 1:56:07Speaker 2: I like Oregon.
- 1:56:08Speaker 3: I still think Ohio State in spite of Ryan Day,
- 1:56:10Speaker 3: as a chance because the Ohio State's another one. Jack
- 1:56:12Speaker 3: Sawyer my guy, another team with two great edge guys.
- 1:56:15Speaker 3: But Kelvin Bank's in a great position because he's gonna
- 1:56:18Speaker 3: have so many chances here over the next month and
- 1:56:19Speaker 3: a half to show up against other guys that are
- 1:56:23Speaker 3: gonna go in the top ten to fifteen to twenty
- 1:56:25Speaker 3: picks in this draft.
- 1:56:25Speaker 2: Yeah, they're right tackle shots a good one. Like I
- 1:56:28Speaker 2: look at him and I just worry a little bit
- 1:56:29Speaker 2: about him protecting his edge, like against real twitched up
- 1:56:32Speaker 2: edge rushers that are he's gonna see in the NFL
- 1:56:35Speaker 2: every single week, you know, like looking just in division,
- 1:56:38Speaker 2: like if he has to face Chop Robinson right like
- 1:56:40Speaker 2: with Miami, you know, Chop Robinson, his first step is
- 1:56:43Speaker 2: gonna eat him up a little bit. I think I
- 1:56:46Speaker 2: guess what.
- 1:56:47Speaker 3: I'm saying to you, though, on my point is like,
- 1:56:48Speaker 3: don't don't be done evaluating Kelvin Banks.
- 1:56:51Speaker 2: No, I'm not. We got some breaking news here. This
- 1:56:55Speaker 2: is interesting Patriots breaking news. Yesh okay Uh.
- 1:56:59Speaker 3: North Carolina is interviewing Bill Belichick for its head coaching opening.
- 1:57:02Speaker 2: According to On three Sports, Oh so, uh, your boy
- 1:57:06Speaker 2: Tony maz had had that scoop yesterday. Yeah, I think
- 1:57:09Speaker 2: Maz had that.
- 1:57:11Speaker 3: I didn't see Bill going to college, not thean l
- 1:57:14Speaker 3: R didn't see it.
- 1:57:15Speaker 2: That's sad. It's sad. I find it sad.
- 1:57:18Speaker 3: This has to be some sort of leverage play by somebody.
- 1:57:20Speaker 2: I find it. I find it legitimately sad that Bill Belichick,
- 1:57:25Speaker 2: the greatest head coach of all time, is gonna not
- 1:57:28Speaker 2: only sink himself from going to college, but to you
- 1:57:32Speaker 2: n C like, no disrespect. Drake May but like you,
- 1:57:36Speaker 2: and he's gonna say, like, after all you talked to
- 1:57:38Speaker 2: Drake May, maybe Drake Drake May is the is literally
- 1:57:42Speaker 2: the only good thing that's Taylor. It's like, Lauren, there
- 1:57:47Speaker 2: he goes Drake Baylor. That's why I bet he's doing
- 1:57:50Speaker 2: Lawrence Taylor and Lawrence Taylor are solid. We just solid there.
- 1:57:54Speaker 2: Oh man, jeez, jeez, How the Mighty have fallen? Huh?
- 1:57:58Speaker 2: All right, well, speaking of how the Mighty have fallen,
- 1:58:01Speaker 2: it's December fifth, and we just did an hour on
- 1:58:03Speaker 2: the draft already, so that's how the mighty have fallen?
- 1:58:06Speaker 2: Here and now Bill Belichick's interviewing for a college coaching job,
- 1:58:09Speaker 2: so we're what world are we living in right now?
- 1:58:12Speaker 2: It's like this is an upside down world. But that's
- 1:58:14Speaker 2: a That's my my initial take on the draft. I
- 1:58:17Speaker 2: hope you enjoyed it. I did. It was good stuff again.
- 1:58:20Speaker 2: I I'm gonna keep pounding the table for the next
- 1:58:24Speaker 2: six months, so I'm gonna be a broken record. Don't
- 1:58:27Speaker 2: waste this pick on a player that's not worth the pick.
- 1:58:29Speaker 2: If you're picking fourth overall, you gotta pick a guy
- 1:58:32Speaker 2: that's worth the fourth overall pick every year, not just
- 1:58:35Speaker 2: this year. You don't want to be that team that
- 1:58:37Speaker 2: gets stuck, you know. I always bring up Jacksonville and
- 1:58:40Speaker 2: they might be in the same position again this year.
- 1:58:43Speaker 2: Trayvon Walker like solid player for the Jaguars. He was
- 1:58:46Speaker 2: not a number one overall pick in a draft, right
- 1:58:49Speaker 2: like that, that was the position they were in in
- 1:58:51Speaker 2: twenty two. I don't want the Patriots to be in
- 1:58:53Speaker 2: that position again in twenty four. I guess we'll see
- 1:58:56Speaker 2: what happens in the last four weeks of the season
- 1:58:58Speaker 2: and if they can, you know where they finished in
- 1:59:00Speaker 2: terms of the draft order. But that's it real quick.
- 1:59:03Speaker 2: The Georgia like linebacker, hybrid guy, Like, what do you
- 1:59:07Speaker 2: think about him?
- 1:59:09Speaker 3: I'm not familiar enough with him. It's Jalen Walker.
- 1:59:12Speaker 2: Yeah, weird player I really like.
- 1:59:15Speaker 3: So the next two guys project, Like, there's so many
- 1:59:17Speaker 3: linebackers in this draft now, like Giod Campbell, Harold Perkins,
- 1:59:20Speaker 3: Danny Stutsman, Barrett Carter. I can't get a read on
- 1:59:22Speaker 3: Walker yet. But he's another guy where it's like I'll
- 1:59:24Speaker 3: be watching him very closely.
- 1:59:26Speaker 2: Yeah, so I watched him a little bit too, as
- 1:59:28Speaker 2: well as MIKEL Williams, and I have to admit, you
- 1:59:30Speaker 2: know who the guy that I kind of saw in
- 1:59:32Speaker 2: his game was who trod Mayo for Michael Williams. No
- 1:59:37Speaker 2: oh for okay, off the line, on the line, off
- 1:59:41Speaker 2: the line, insideline. Yeah, a little bit of that, A
- 1:59:45Speaker 2: little bit, so that would be an interesting one, all right.
- 1:59:49Speaker 2: Before we wrap it up here, attention Patriots fans, is
- 1:59:51Speaker 2: the most nail biting action film of the season. Carry On,
