Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Vincent mechav any Are, UK europe correspondent Vincent. The death
- 0:04Speaker 1: toll still rising from this funding in Spain.
- 0:07Speaker 2: Yeah, that's right. The death toll is now up to
- 0:09Speaker 2: one hundred and fifty eight people with we understand it,
- 0:13Speaker 2: one hundreds more still missing. This has been a remarkable
- 0:16Speaker 2: and tragic event, about a year's worth of rainfall coming
- 0:21Speaker 2: down in just eight hours in the Valencia region. It
- 0:25Speaker 2: has caused widespread devastation. You really should look at the photos.
- 0:29Speaker 2: I mean this was completely you know, they were expecting
- 0:32Speaker 2: bad rain, but nothing like this. It's destroyed roads and homes, buildings,
- 0:36Speaker 2: It's taken out bridges and highways. It is utterly devastating
- 0:40Speaker 2: and the Spanish Prime Minister has been visiting the scene
- 0:44Speaker 2: today promising all kinds of support. There is EU wide
- 0:47Speaker 2: support coming in for this region. And sadly, it feels
- 0:50Speaker 2: like this death holl, I mean, just looking at these pictures,
- 0:52Speaker 2: the number of vehicles sort of stashed up and washed
- 0:55Speaker 2: away in this people were just caught completely on the hop.
- 0:57Speaker 2: It feels like the death holl will sadly continue to rise.
- 1:00Speaker 1: Yeah, it's like somebody who has picked up a box
- 1:04Speaker 1: full of cars and just tipped them on a street.
- 1:06Speaker 1: It's frightening to look at a lot of people angry
- 1:08Speaker 1: about the lack of preparedness. You know, by the time
- 1:11Speaker 1: they got the warnings, the flooding had already started.
- 1:15Speaker 2: Yeah, that's right, And I mean from listening to interviews
- 1:18Speaker 2: with people on the ground, you know there had been
- 1:21Speaker 2: a severe drought in this region of Spain for many months.
- 1:24Speaker 2: The ground was completely sort of hard and dry, so
- 1:27Speaker 2: this water had nowhere to go. It couldn't steep into
- 1:29Speaker 2: the earth, so it has all just gathered so quickly.
- 1:33Speaker 2: And I think there are questions now as to why.
- 1:35Speaker 2: You know, there were warnings ahead of the rainfall that
- 1:38Speaker 2: there would be strong rainfall, but I think the reaction
- 1:41Speaker 2: as this rainfall was going along, I mean, you know,
- 1:43Speaker 2: there should have been a bit more perhaps, I think
- 1:45Speaker 2: people are saying of a response after the first sort
- 1:48Speaker 2: of two three hours of how heavy this rain was,
- 1:51Speaker 2: to alert people to get off the roads and get
- 1:53Speaker 2: to safe higher ground if possible.
- 1:55Speaker 1: Thanks so much for your time this morning. That's Vincent
