- 0:39SPEAKER_02: Welcome in everybody to the Talking Tech Podcast Powered by the Nation, part of the Nation Podcast Network.
- 0:45SPEAKER_02: I'm your host, Steven Rodriguez, my co-host Tristan McGonagall.
- 0:48SPEAKER_02: Tristan, what's up, dude?
- 0:50SPEAKER_03: They still haven't responded to me about shorting it to the nation.
- 0:54SPEAKER_00: What?
- 0:55SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I've I've DM'd them.
- 0:57SPEAKER_03: I've DM management.
- 0:58unknown: Yeah.
- 0:59SPEAKER_03: Requested that we change it to the nation.
- 1:02SPEAKER_02: The nation just shorten it up.
- 1:03SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 1:04SPEAKER_02: That's a good idea.
- 1:04SPEAKER_02: Thank you.
- 1:06SPEAKER_02: We'll wait for them to respond.
- 1:08SPEAKER_02: But uh I think for you it's it works.
- 1:12SPEAKER_02: I think they've just completely ignored us at this point.
- 1:14SPEAKER_03: I don't know.
- 1:15SPEAKER_03: I think they're just really thinking about it, like really taking their time, letting it uh simmer, and I'm sure they'll make a decision soon.
- 1:21SPEAKER_03: I don't want them to rush.
- 1:23SPEAKER_02: Now now think about this.
- 1:24SPEAKER_02: This is how good of a podcaster I am.
- 1:26SPEAKER_02: To transition from that topic.
- 1:29SPEAKER_02: You know what is a good idea.
- 1:32SPEAKER_02: That was okay.
- 1:34SPEAKER_02: Well, no matter where this goes, that's not a segue.
- 1:36SPEAKER_02: You know what is a good idea.
- 1:39SPEAKER_02: Blacking out the Oregon game.
- 1:42SPEAKER_02: And you know what hasn't happened.
- 1:45SPEAKER_02: A decision to black out the Oregon game.
- 1:48SPEAKER_03: I think this is disrespectful that you tried to smother my nache idea with this idea, like trying to segue that together.
- 1:55SPEAKER_03: It didn't work.
- 1:56SPEAKER_03: But second of all, look, okay, all right, blackout's cool, but the stripeout's gonna be cool too.
- 2:02SPEAKER_03: All right, let's peppermint the Jones.
- 2:06SPEAKER_03: You and me disagree, brother.
- 2:08SPEAKER_02: Why?
- 2:08SPEAKER_02: What's what's the issue with the peppermint?
- 2:11SPEAKER_02: The issue with the peppermint, first off, you need a lot of compliance for a stripeout.
- 2:15SPEAKER_03: You don't think you're gonna put uh Tuck uh shirts underneath the shirt in the chairs?
- 2:20SPEAKER_02: I don't think they're gonna that's why they're telling people what to wear.
- 2:23SPEAKER_02: I don't think they're gonna give a shirt, they're not gonna give a shirt to every person that's in that stadium.
- 2:28SPEAKER_04: Why not?
- 2:29SPEAKER_02: They're not going to get some Gilded Hefty, you know, under there, you know.
- 2:33SPEAKER_02: If they do if they do give a shirt to everybody there, I'm down with this idea.
- 2:38SPEAKER_02: But I don't think they're gonna give it shirt.
- 2:40SPEAKER_03: Well, it it this isn't complicated.
- 2:42SPEAKER_03: It's not gonna look, it's not gonna look uh, it's not gonna be perfect, but it's gonna look fine.
- 2:47SPEAKER_03: So you know, you know, this just means they're planning on blacking out and widing out other games.
- 2:52SPEAKER_02: They are, and as as as 15 other people have told me on this on this tweet, the blackout game is gonna be TCU.
- 3:01SPEAKER_02: And to me, it's a Thursday night game in early November, and you're choosing that one to blackout when what's that date have to do with anything?
- 3:14SPEAKER_02: It's just it's there's no significance.
- 3:15SPEAKER_03: That's what I'm trying to say.
- 3:16SPEAKER_01: It's not like a holiday game, it's whatever.
- 3:19SPEAKER_03: One of our biggest rivals on the schedule is a whatever for the blackout.
- 3:23SPEAKER_02: Instead of the biggest home game in probably the last 20 years for Texas Tech, that's why we busted out the peppermint.
- 3:29SPEAKER_02: We're gonna be minty fresh in the Jones.
- 3:31SPEAKER_02: The coolest color out or whatever the fans can do in the stadium is a blackout, especially when your freaking team is black, is one of their main colors.
- 3:41SPEAKER_03: Look, sir, red is also one of our main colors.
- 3:44SPEAKER_03: And would you have been happier had they done a red out?
- 3:47SPEAKER_03: I think that would have been better than the show.
- 3:49SPEAKER_03: Have we ever done a red out?
- 3:50SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I don't think so.
- 3:52SPEAKER_03: Have we?
- 3:52SPEAKER_02: Yeah, we've done a red out.
- 3:53SPEAKER_02: Red out's a good idea.
- 3:55SPEAKER_03: Well, no, well, here's here's the thing, dude.
- 3:58SPEAKER_03: It's gonna be on live TV, and Texas Tech obviously thinks that maybe it might be a good idea to show how cool and creative and hip and cool we are in Lubbock, Texas, and we're gonna do something wild like Peppermint the Jones.
- 4:11SPEAKER_03: So I think that's probably what we're gonna angle with.
- 4:13SPEAKER_03: You know what's cool?
- 4:14SPEAKER_03: A blackout.
- 4:15SPEAKER_03: But the blackout's been there done that.
- 4:18SPEAKER_03: Like stripes don't happen that often.
- 4:20SPEAKER_04: People don't do stripes much because it's a tough one to pull off.
- 4:24SPEAKER_04: Yeah, we're about to do it, damn it.
- 4:26SPEAKER_04: We're gonna pull it off.
- 4:28SPEAKER_02: I love your I love your enthusiasm and your positivity towards the peppermint.
- 4:33SPEAKER_02: I think the peppermint's a fine idea.
- 4:35SPEAKER_02: I think we could have done the peppermint at a different game.
- 4:37SPEAKER_03: Do you like why I coined peppermint right here and now?
- 4:40SPEAKER_03: Sure.
- 4:40SPEAKER_03: Okay, I just I deserve a little credit for that, but go ahead and glaze right over it.
- 4:45SPEAKER_02: There's also no black, it's just red and white.
- 4:49SPEAKER_02: Yes, okay, but uh white is a tertiary color.
- 4:52SPEAKER_02: So white isn't one of our main colors, it's a tertiary color.
- 4:56SPEAKER_02: This is something that you've told me before.
- 4:58SPEAKER_02: It is yes, I have.
- 5:00SPEAKER_02: Is you you don't like the white, you want us to use more black and red because they're two colors.
- 5:05SPEAKER_03: I I agree with you, but the white is a tertiary color, it's a tertiary color for everybody, but it's not no, it's a primary for a lot.
- 5:16SPEAKER_03: Sure.
- 5:16SPEAKER_03: It is.
- 5:17SPEAKER_03: Um, it it's combined with our namesake primary color, red for the red raiders.
- 5:24SPEAKER_03: But we're gonna be the red peppermint raiders going on, you know.
- 5:27SPEAKER_02: No, no, no, no.
- 5:28SPEAKER_02: See, I'm gonna break down every uh September September, every single point that is disagreeing with my stance.
- 5:35SPEAKER_02: I am going to counterpoint you right now.
- 5:38SPEAKER_02: What?
- 5:38SPEAKER_02: Okay, one blackout, the coolest, coolest theme in college sports, maybe besides the white out that Penn State does.
- 5:46SPEAKER_02: But that's during winter.
- 5:47SPEAKER_02: There's snow usually, it's pretty rocket in there, they're known for it.
- 5:51SPEAKER_02: But other than that, the coolest color out is a blackout, and we all know that.
- 5:55SPEAKER_02: Two, yes, I did read the same article.
- 5:59SPEAKER_02: TCU is the blackout game.
- 6:01SPEAKER_02: It's a Thursday night game, it's just not it's the Oregon game is the biggest home game of the year, it's already sold out, it's been sold out for a while.
- 6:09SPEAKER_02: This is going to be the best atmosphere that we see the Jones in all year.
- 6:14SPEAKER_02: You think so?
- 6:15SPEAKER_02: Yes, are you sure?
- 6:17SPEAKER_03: Like, what if we go on an absolute tear and we are top 15 as the season goes on?
- 6:22SPEAKER_03: You don't think the Jones is gonna be rocking back and forth?
- 6:25SPEAKER_02: It's going to be rocking, but this is the biggest home game that Texas Tech has had in 20 years.
- 6:31SPEAKER_03: All right, you're right.
- 6:31SPEAKER_03: Yeah, still a lot of students aren't gonna be able to get in.
- 6:34SPEAKER_03: Yes, I I I hear what you're saying, but why are you being a fuddy duddy?
- 6:38SPEAKER_02: I'm just saying they chose the wrong game to black out just because it's a rival, just because it's TCU, TCU is not gonna be as good as they were last year.
- 6:46SPEAKER_02: TCU, I think, is gonna take a significant step back, while Oregon is gonna maintain and be a good team this year.
- 6:52SPEAKER_03: Please keep ranting.
- 6:53SPEAKER_03: I need to look something up.
- 6:54SPEAKER_03: Keep keep going.
- 6:57SPEAKER_02: The the argument against a blackout that it's overdone, blah, blah, blah.
- 7:00SPEAKER_02: The other schools that have done a blackout that don't have black as one of their main colors, I do have a gripe with Iowa State primarily.
- 7:08SPEAKER_02: They did it for like a whole year, and it was stupid, and I disagreed with it.
- 7:12SPEAKER_02: But that doesn't mean the Texas tank can't still do a blackout because one of our colors is in fact black.
- 7:18SPEAKER_03: No, yeah, I agree with that.
- 7:19SPEAKER_03: I think whatever uh teams that don't have black as a primary color is kind of stolen valor.
- 7:25SPEAKER_03: But can the same argument be said about our cotton games, the whiteouts?
- 7:30SPEAKER_02: But there's like a theme around that, you know?
- 7:32SPEAKER_02: Like the cotton, yeah, that's that's part of it.
- 7:34SPEAKER_03: Yeah, that's fair.
- 7:35SPEAKER_03: It's it's yeah.
- 7:37SPEAKER_03: Are the blackouts still celebrate oil or energy?
- 7:40SPEAKER_02: I don't know.
- 7:40SPEAKER_02: Oh, you know what?
- 7:41SPEAKER_02: You know what it is this year?
- 7:42SPEAKER_02: I can pull it up right here.
- 7:43SPEAKER_02: All right, Carleton State is celebrate agriculture.
- 7:46SPEAKER_02: Uh, I guess that's gonna be the whiteout.
- 7:48SPEAKER_02: I guess that's the whiteout.
- 7:50SPEAKER_02: I guess that's the cotton.
- 7:50SPEAKER_02: They've changed we're gonna white out Carleton.
- 7:53SPEAKER_02: They've changed celebrate cotton to celebrate agriculture, which I guess that's fine.
- 7:58SPEAKER_02: Um, U of H is gonna be Parents Weekend and Hall of Fame weekend.
- 8:02SPEAKER_02: I don't know if there's a plan there.
- 8:04SPEAKER_02: Uh Kansas State is homecoming.
- 8:08SPEAKER_02: Dress up like your parents.
- 8:13SPEAKER_03: I gotta go find me some like khaki shorts real quick.
- 8:16SPEAKER_02: Go re go reach out to Texas Tech PR and tell them dress like your parents.
- 8:21SPEAKER_02: Um, October 14th, Kansas State is homecoming and Red Raider Club Appreciation Day.
- 8:27SPEAKER_02: Again, no like theme for what to wear.
- 8:30SPEAKER_02: Uh TCU wear black and the centennial celebration, 100th year.
- 8:36SPEAKER_02: Again, why are you doing this on a Thursday night game?
- 8:39SPEAKER_02: Why are you doing all this good stuff on a I was I didn't hate Thursday night games back in the day?
- 8:44SPEAKER_03: Did you?
- 8:45SPEAKER_02: Well, what I oh yeah, it's cool for students, it's not cool for people that freaking work on Thursday.
- 8:51SPEAKER_03: So what?
- 8:52SPEAKER_03: The boss will get it.
- 8:54SPEAKER_03: All right, so here's okay, good, go ahead.
- 8:58SPEAKER_03: No, no, all right, no, all right.
- 9:00SPEAKER_03: So here's why we're doing peppermint.
- 9:03SPEAKER_03: All right, is peppermint poisonous to ducks?
- 9:06SPEAKER_03: Yes, ducks can eat mints in moderation, mints add variety to their diet.
- 9:13SPEAKER_03: See, it says moderation, so but an overwhelming amount of mint is going to kill them.
- 9:21SPEAKER_03: Yes, exactly.
- 9:22SPEAKER_03: So, what I'm saying is if we get enough mint in there, um, it's it's gonna it's gonna, you know, it's gonna mess with them.
- 9:30SPEAKER_03: It's gonna it's gonna mess around.
- 9:32SPEAKER_03: It's it's like you know how it's kind of like how you're not supposed to give ducks bread, but really when I as I read further, it looks like they can they can um oh yeah, see, mint can be poisonous for ducklings if ingested in large quantities.
- 9:43SPEAKER_03: So this is that's what you were looking.
- 9:45SPEAKER_02: This is what you were looking up.
- 9:46SPEAKER_02: You were looking up are ducks allergic to peppermint?
- 9:49SPEAKER_03: Not allergic, I don't know.
- 9:50SPEAKER_03: That's how nature works.
- 9:52SPEAKER_03: Are ducks eating?
- 9:53SPEAKER_02: Can ducks eat peppermint?
- 9:56SPEAKER_04: Yes.
- 9:59SPEAKER_04: So, all right, that's why it's it's it in in large quantities.
- 10:04SPEAKER_02: Why not do the red and white why not do the peppermint on the celebrate America game, which is gonna be the UCF game?
- 10:10SPEAKER_02: Why not do that?
- 10:11SPEAKER_02: That would have been sick, huh?
- 10:13SPEAKER_04: Yeah, that'd have been cool.
- 10:14SPEAKER_04: But hey what am I still still?
- 10:19SPEAKER_02: I have completely changed your mind, but you have to stick to it, and I understand.
- 10:23SPEAKER_02: Um the last the last point, the last point I need to make because this was probably the overwhelming like counter that people were saying to mind.
- 10:35SPEAKER_02: It's so hot, it's September in Texas, it's gonna be 95 degrees.
- 10:41SPEAKER_02: Why are we wearing black?
- 10:43SPEAKER_02: You're gonna sweat if you're wearing white, red, black, or nothing out there in these streets.
- 10:51SPEAKER_02: It is September in Texas, and I hate to break it to you, but no matter what color you're wearing, you're gonna be hot and it's gonna happen.
- 11:00SPEAKER_03: At least the blessing is it's gonna be at night, so it'll cool off a bit.
- 11:05SPEAKER_03: You're still gonna be you're still gonna be smelling real real fermented, but it's it's still at least it's at least it's not gonna be like dangerous.
- 11:15SPEAKER_02: I'm just saying all the points against the blackout for Oregon are stupid, and it's stupid that we're not blacking out Oregon.
- 11:22SPEAKER_02: But show up in your stripes, it's gonna be great, it's gonna look cool, it's gonna be a sellout, there's gonna be a great crowd.
- 11:28SPEAKER_02: This is a very, very minor thing in the grand scheme, but we're still a couple weeks out of football, so we have to talk about something.
- 11:34SPEAKER_03: Just just don't be a fuddy duddy and go with it.
- 11:37SPEAKER_03: I can't believe we just spent what was easily 10 minutes on that.
- 11:41SPEAKER_02: Yeah, well, they messed up and they pissed me off today, and a lot of tech Twitter got to me, so I needed a rant.
- 11:47SPEAKER_03: Is there any other dumb crap that we have to get out of the way before we move on?
- 11:52SPEAKER_02: No, no, unless you had something.
- 11:55SPEAKER_03: Uh no, I I think I think that's I think that about wraps it up.
- 11:58SPEAKER_03: That's pretty stupid.
- 12:00SPEAKER_02: Okay, let's talk wide receivers.
- 12:03SPEAKER_02: Um best room in uh best room in the Big 12, potentially.
- 12:09SPEAKER_02: Uh potentially, yeah.
- 12:11SPEAKER_02: Oh, absolutely.
- 12:13SPEAKER_02: Uh there's so much returning production from this wide receiver room.
- 12:17SPEAKER_02: 13 out of the 14 leading receivers from last year are back um in the red and black.
- 12:22SPEAKER_02: The only one of which not returning is Trey Cleveland, who transferred to I believe UNT.
- 12:28SPEAKER_02: Um green.
- 12:30SPEAKER_02: Go mean Green.
- 12:32SPEAKER_02: How I kind of want to talk about this is in tiers, uh, because there are a lot of receivers.
- 12:38SPEAKER_02: We're not gonna be able to touch on all of them, but briefly.
- 12:41SPEAKER_02: Um, so let's kind of break them down in tiers.
- 12:43SPEAKER_02: Tier three, which I'm calling the freshman tier, because guess what?
- 12:47SPEAKER_02: They're all freshmen and they're probably not gonna play.
- 12:50SPEAKER_02: Um, Kelby Valson, TJ West, Aiden Meeks, DJ Crest, and Tyler King.
- 12:57SPEAKER_02: There's only really one here, potentially two that I could see playing uh legitimate snaps, and it's probably gonna take some injuries for them to get on the field, and that's Kelby Valson and uh Tyler King.
- 13:09SPEAKER_02: Tyler King is a redshirt freshman, he was on last year's team.
- 13:12SPEAKER_02: Um, he's super speedy, super quick.
- 13:15SPEAKER_02: I think he was a four-star coming out of high school.
- 13:17SPEAKER_02: Um, and then it seems like Valson has impressed Joey Maguire.
- 13:21SPEAKER_02: He mentioned him in some of his uh fallball interviews.
- 13:24SPEAKER_02: Um, so you know, I I think those two guys are the ones to kind of hit on here.
- 13:29SPEAKER_02: The rest, they're gonna see time in the future.
- 13:31SPEAKER_03: But we're probably not gonna see them this year, right?
- 13:34SPEAKER_02: Potentially.
- 13:35SPEAKER_02: I I'm just I'm thinking two guys have a chance, and it's the two I named.
- 13:38SPEAKER_02: The other three, I don't think we're gonna see on the on the field much this year, unless they're on special teams.
- 13:42SPEAKER_03: I it's just what's so nice about being Texas Tech, you know, it's it's I feel like you can never be surprised whenever people are saying that in your top three room in the Big 12, obviously one of the best in the nation.
- 13:52SPEAKER_03: It's just our identity at this point, uh, this whole century.
- 13:56SPEAKER_03: But um, it's it's great that we can just sit here and bank on these guys.
- 14:00SPEAKER_03: Like you just sit there and make this little investment, you tuck them away, you put a redshirt on them, and you allow them to develop into the system, and then you get grown men uh as in the program at all times.
- 14:10SPEAKER_03: Like you have to really don't have to rely on youth at this position with us, and that's a really that's a really nice thing to lay on there.
- 14:16SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah, no doubt.
- 14:18SPEAKER_02: I mean, you you want to develop just as you're competing, and that's the ultimate goal.
- 14:22SPEAKER_02: Um, so I I think he we got some good, speedy young receivers.
- 14:26SPEAKER_02: Athletic is all hell.
- 14:28SPEAKER_02: That's what Joey and uh his staff have recruited.
- 14:31SPEAKER_02: So um excited to see these guys in the future.
- 14:34SPEAKER_02: Probably not gonna see a lot of them this year.
- 14:36SPEAKER_02: Um, let's go to tier two.
- 14:38SPEAKER_02: And the first two guys I want to talk about, these are kind of possible contributors.
- 14:43SPEAKER_02: Um, first two guys we need to touch on just briefly are Drew Ho Cut and Hayden Wigington.
- 14:48SPEAKER_02: Um, two guys you're probably not gonna see on the field much this year, potentially in the slot, potentially on special teams.
- 14:55SPEAKER_02: Um, but they're not freshmen.
- 14:57SPEAKER_02: They were on the team last year.
- 14:59SPEAKER_02: You know, I I I think Hayden Wiggins has a great career in country music ahead of him.
- 15:04SPEAKER_03: Hell yeah, man.
- 15:05SPEAKER_03: Alvin rules.
- 15:07SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 15:08SPEAKER_03: Um, I guess it's no secret that we're, you know, we're talking about the the two white guys here, huh?
- 15:14SPEAKER_02: Wait, hey, Texas Tech is known for their short white receivers.
- 15:17SPEAKER_03: So no, absolutely.
- 15:18SPEAKER_03: Just we just oh no, that was that was Zach Thomas, not a receiver.
- 15:22SPEAKER_03: But but a former white tech player, but um correct.
- 15:27SPEAKER_04: But you know, you're absolutely right that we have put out some some speedy little white guys, but um I mean there's no time, I guess.
- 15:36SPEAKER_04: There's potential.
- 15:37SPEAKER_02: Like I both guys, junior.
- 15:38SPEAKER_02: I think Drew Hokut's a junior, I think Way Geek T's a sophomore, yeah.
- 15:42SPEAKER_03: So um, but yeah, they're probably depth pieces, you know.
- 15:45SPEAKER_03: Oh, absolutely.
- 15:46SPEAKER_03: They're guys in the locker room.
- 15:47SPEAKER_02: They're fourth.
- 15:48SPEAKER_02: Drew Ho Cut, uh, you know, has a pretty important last name there.
- 15:52SPEAKER_02: Um, so first two guys I wanted to mention because I really don't think they're gonna be making a lot of contributions uh stat-wise for this year's team.
- 16:00SPEAKER_02: No, uh that's okay.
- 16:01SPEAKER_02: We still uh next guy I want to touch on is Brady Boyd here in tier two, uh, just because he could be a contributor this year, or and what Joey McGuire has kind of said is going to happen, basically, he's implied it very heavily, is that they want to redshirt Brady Boyd.
- 16:20SPEAKER_02: Last year, I think they wanted to redshirt him.
- 16:22SPEAKER_02: They couldn't quite do that because of the depth that we had last year.
- 16:26SPEAKER_02: So they are going to, I think, try to redshirt him this year, have him play in the important games, you know, the UTs, the I don't know, if UCF ends up being pretty good, Kansas State, TCU, Oregon, potentially, you know.
- 16:38SPEAKER_02: But overall, I do think they want to redshirt Brady Boyd pretty badly.
- 16:44SPEAKER_03: Yeah, and it's it Brady Boyd was uh, I think people remember him, he was the guy that transferred him for Minnesota.
- 16:49SPEAKER_03: He was the guy that kind of that was kind of supposed to go to Tex from the start.
- 16:52SPEAKER_03: And he ended up going to Minnesota, right?
- 16:54SPEAKER_03: And that's kind of thank God he's kind of circled back around Texas boy.
- 16:58SPEAKER_03: So yeah, man, he he's he definitely seems like a very strong piece to to keep in the pocket.
- 17:02SPEAKER_03: Obviously, he he's probably not ever going to be your your your absolute you know magnet hands and in the backfield, but you know, he's absolutely kind of the guy that that is a good gap filler there.
- 17:13SPEAKER_03: So I like I'll have I like having him on the on the on the roster as well.
- 17:17SPEAKER_02: Yeah, no doubt.
- 17:18SPEAKER_02: Um, next guy is Coy Eakin, the red shirt freshman going into this year.
- 17:24SPEAKER_02: There has been a lot of receivers that have received hype quite like Koy has.
- 17:28SPEAKER_02: He is unfortunately uh suffered a collarbone injury, much like some previous guys here at Texas Tech, Tyler Shuck.
- 17:37SPEAKER_02: He's gonna be out until probably the third or fourth week of the season, Joey McGuire announced, which kind of stinks because I think he was a potential breakout candidate.
- 17:45SPEAKER_02: And when you miss the first three weeks of the year coming back from a collarbone injury, I just don't know how quickly you can pick it back up.
- 17:52SPEAKER_02: I could be totally wrong, but I wouldn't expect him to contribute until later in the season if he does contribute this year.
- 17:59SPEAKER_03: Yeah, you were saying that no freshmen were supposed to do anything, dog.
- 18:03SPEAKER_03: Redshirt freshman.
- 18:04SPEAKER_03: Yeah, it's it just I you were talking about a redshirt freshman in the freshman tier.
- 18:08SPEAKER_03: Redshirt freshman.
- 18:10SPEAKER_02: Sir, you're this is different.
- 18:12SPEAKER_02: They've they're talking up Koyikin like he's gonna be a star in the future.
- 18:15SPEAKER_02: So they're not talking up the other guys like that.
- 18:18SPEAKER_02: Can can we put his collarbone back together?
- 18:21SPEAKER_03: Do you have a medical degree?
- 18:23SPEAKER_03: I think it's just kind of like a snap and go, isn't it?
- 18:26SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I think they already had the surgery, and I think it's just a recovery process at this point.
- 18:31SPEAKER_03: So I just figure the bone's back together, you're ready to go.
- 18:34SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah, you know, no doubt.
- 18:36SPEAKER_02: Easy peasy, you know, just like that.
- 18:38SPEAKER_02: But yeah, no, and the the injury is unfortunate because he he does have a bright future, and uh hopefully he comes back, you know, much like Tyler Shuck in a good way.
- 18:47SPEAKER_03: Wait, Tyler Shuck's receiver now?
- 18:50SPEAKER_02: No, Tyler Shuck suffered a collarbone injury and he came back and his time as a receiver.
- 18:55SPEAKER_02: Oh my god.
- 18:59SPEAKER_02: I'm already done with you.
- 19:02SPEAKER_02: Next guy, I want to talk about it.
- 19:03SPEAKER_02: Some people might be upset that he's in this tier.
- 19:05SPEAKER_02: I'm a little upset with myself for putting him in this tier, is JJ Sparkman.
- 19:10SPEAKER_02: JJ Sparkman has not necessarily contributed at a level as some of these other guys have that came in at the same time.
- 19:19SPEAKER_02: Now, I don't know if that's JJ's fault.
- 19:21SPEAKER_02: I don't know if that's just the amount of talent that's in front of him, but he is 6'4.
- 19:27SPEAKER_02: He has great athleticism.
- 19:29SPEAKER_02: He caught a pass in that, I believe it was the Mississippi State bowl game that was unbelievable.
- 19:35SPEAKER_02: He just straight up leaped over the corner to uh to catch that touchdown from Donovan Smith that game.
- 19:40SPEAKER_02: Another guy who could be a potential breakout candidate, but he hasn't really shown it yet, and he's just got a lot of talent in front of him.
- 19:48SPEAKER_03: You know, as a as a receiver, how much is it up to you to break out?
- 19:54SPEAKER_03: Like it's obviously you have to be targeted to catch the ball.
- 19:58SPEAKER_03: So gotta be open.
- 19:59SPEAKER_03: Yeah, that's true.
- 20:01SPEAKER_03: But uh what if they got some stud corners on the guy?
- 20:04SPEAKER_02: They could, but they're not gonna put the stud corners on JJ Sparkman.
- 20:07SPEAKER_03: Are you sure they might know something we don't?
- 20:10SPEAKER_02: That's true, I guess.
- 20:12SPEAKER_02: I guess they may, I don't know, but I would not expect him to draw the number one corner.
- 20:18SPEAKER_02: Uh, I expect Jaron Bradley to get that for the majority of the time this year.
- 20:21SPEAKER_02: Well, you're not a defensive coordinator.
- 20:23SPEAKER_02: That's true.
- 20:23SPEAKER_02: I'm not, and there's a reason for that.
- 20:26SPEAKER_02: But JJ could very well have a great season.
- 20:29SPEAKER_02: Could this could be his year that he absolutely goes crazy?
- 20:32SPEAKER_02: Good things coming out of camp from him as well.
- 20:34SPEAKER_02: But probably the most talked-about player in camp, and I am still keeping him.
- 20:39SPEAKER_02: This is the final guy in the tier two category, is Jordan Brown.
- 20:44SPEAKER_02: Transfer from Kansas last year, played a little bit, a lot on special teams.
- 20:49SPEAKER_02: He was kind of returning punts, returning kicks a lot of the year.
- 20:52SPEAKER_02: He's going to be doing a little bit of that this year.
- 20:55SPEAKER_02: Had a really good scrimmage in the first scrimmage of uh fallball this year.
- 21:00SPEAKER_02: Could is speedy, he's really athletic, but I don't necessarily see him again with just the amount of depth and talent in front of him being a major guy this year.
- 21:12SPEAKER_03: So is he just just kind of like a mystery card here?
- 21:14SPEAKER_02: Yeah, he is.
- 21:15SPEAKER_02: I think he's a mystery card.
- 21:16SPEAKER_02: He's getting he's getting some extra reps due to some injuries in uh in fall camp, and I think that's gonna be good for him.
- 21:23SPEAKER_02: But again, it it could be, could not be.
- 21:25SPEAKER_02: That's why he's in this tier.
- 21:27SPEAKER_02: I see.
- 21:28SPEAKER_02: I see.
- 21:30SPEAKER_02: What's next?
- 21:30SPEAKER_02: Uh the tier one guys, the guys to watch tier on this receiving core.
- 21:36SPEAKER_02: And I there's a lot of them.
- 21:37SPEAKER_02: There's six.
- 21:39SPEAKER_02: A lot of guys you haven't mentioned.
- 21:40SPEAKER_02: Six in total.
- 21:42SPEAKER_02: Let's talk about it.
- 21:43SPEAKER_02: Nehemiah Martinez starting off, local love it kid.
- 21:48SPEAKER_02: Great in the slot, had a really good year, was a former walk on to this team, and just tough as hell.
- 21:54SPEAKER_02: He's not big in stature, but he is tough as hell.
- 21:57SPEAKER_02: I love watching Nehemiah play.
- 21:59SPEAKER_02: He He's absolutely going to be a major piece on this receiving court.
- 22:03SPEAKER_03: Definitely a name that stands out to you.
- 22:05SPEAKER_03: You know, we kind of go down a list of names we're probably not too familiar with at this point, but he is definitely one of the first ones to stand out.
- 22:11SPEAKER_03: And obviously, how can you not cheer for the hometown kid?
- 22:14SPEAKER_03: Those are your favorite players on the team.
- 22:16SPEAKER_03: And man, it's going to be great to see him really uh he's he's only junior, so we still have some more time with him.
- 22:21SPEAKER_03: Um, but it's gonna be exciting to watch him in his upperclassman years here.
- 22:24SPEAKER_02: For sure.
- 22:25SPEAKER_02: Absolutely.
- 22:25SPEAKER_02: Yeah, excited for Nehemiah.
- 22:27SPEAKER_02: Um, the only newcomer on this year's receiving core that isn't a freshman, Dre McCrae.
- 22:35SPEAKER_02: What so wanted to get your thoughts and opinions on this top five football name on this team, top two, the best football name on this team?
- 22:46SPEAKER_02: What is it?
- 22:48SPEAKER_03: This he oh man, that's top three, definitely top three.
- 22:52SPEAKER_03: It's uh it's arguably number one.
- 22:54SPEAKER_03: Dre McCrae, are you kidding me?
- 22:56SPEAKER_03: Like that that's an awesome wide receiver name.
- 22:59SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 23:00SPEAKER_02: No, I I I mean, you're you're competing with guys like what Baron Morton.
- 23:05SPEAKER_02: You're competing.
- 23:06SPEAKER_02: Shucks pretty good.
- 23:07SPEAKER_02: Rusty Stotz.
- 23:08SPEAKER_02: Like that's a football name right there, man.
- 23:12SPEAKER_02: So I'm just I think it's top three.
- 23:14SPEAKER_02: Um Austin SmackNamara.
- 23:16SPEAKER_02: Austin SmackNamara.
- 23:18SPEAKER_02: Some people call him Austin McNamara.
- 23:20SPEAKER_03: That's not his name.
- 23:21SPEAKER_02: That's not his name.
- 23:22SPEAKER_03: Uh Barron Morton was the only one that was like sticking out in my head as well.
- 23:24SPEAKER_03: Because Baron is a quarterback name.
- 23:27SPEAKER_02: Rusty is an offensive lineman's name, if I've ever heard.
- 23:30SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 23:30SPEAKER_03: Jake Strong's good too.
- 23:32SPEAKER_02: Jake, that's another great quarterback name.
- 23:34SPEAKER_02: Another great quarterback name.
- 23:36SPEAKER_02: But besides all the naming, Dre McCray is an elite football player.
- 23:40SPEAKER_02: He is fast as hell.
- 23:42SPEAKER_02: He is last year coming off a thousand-yard year at Austin P, mind you.
- 23:48SPEAKER_02: But look at the Alabama stats.
- 23:51SPEAKER_02: They played Alabama last year, 12 catches, 92 yards for Dre McCrae in that game against the Crimson Tide.
- 23:57SPEAKER_02: The one of the best teams in the country, year in, year out, and he wanted for that one.
- 24:02SPEAKER_02: Um, seven games over 90 yards receiving last year, consistent, and just a freaking speed demon.
- 24:11SPEAKER_03: So clearly under-recruited.
- 24:14SPEAKER_03: Yes.
- 24:15SPEAKER_03: No, I mean I it's it's it's cool to see a guy like this because you know, obviously a lot of these guys are holdovers from the last coaching administration, but this guy is obviously a Maguire product in the sense that this is exactly the player they're looking for.
- 24:28SPEAKER_03: So it's cool to see that uh that type on the team.
- 24:31SPEAKER_03: I'm I'm excited to see him on the field and see like what it's like to see the Meguire formula kind of take effect on the roster.
- 24:38SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I can't tell where he's gonna play more at because they kind of have him at all sorts of positions on the receiving line.
- 24:44SPEAKER_02: He's outside, a little bit of inside.
- 24:46SPEAKER_02: So it's gonna be interesting.
- 24:48SPEAKER_02: I think he's uh, you know, if Tyler Shuck can get that ball out there and boot at 50 yards, I think uh I think you could see some Dre McCray 70 yard, 60 yard touchdowns this year.
- 24:59SPEAKER_03: Does is Dre McCr McCray your uh like biggest breakout potential on the team?
- 25:04SPEAKER_03: Like Ross, I mean on the on the receiving core.
- 25:08SPEAKER_02: He's there's just so many dudes.
- 25:10SPEAKER_02: Like we have so many dudes that because last year I was a big Miles Price is gonna be an over a thousand yard receiver, and that just wasn't the case.
- 25:18SPEAKER_02: It wasn't really Miles' fault.
- 25:20SPEAKER_02: He was coming off some injuries, but there was so many weapons and so many guys to throw to.
- 25:25SPEAKER_02: So it's tough for me.
- 25:26SPEAKER_02: Um, I think he's probably got the most uh most potential to be a surprise.
- 25:33SPEAKER_03: So yes, you just you just took um two minutes to answer my question.
- 25:36SPEAKER_03: Yes.
- 25:37SPEAKER_02: Sure, sure.
- 25:39SPEAKER_02: Yeah, you said it.
- 25:41SPEAKER_02: Dre McRae, guy, guy to watch.
- 25:45SPEAKER_02: Um player, man to watch, man to watch, fourth guy in this.
- 25:54SPEAKER_02: And oh no, we still have plenty to go.
- 25:57SPEAKER_02: Loick Fungi, another local product, his fourth year now with Texas Tech.
- 26:04SPEAKER_02: Last year, by far his biggest in the red and black, 34 catches, 451 yards, and three touchdowns.
- 26:10SPEAKER_02: I he is his first couple years, he was either too young to get into the games or he was hurt.
- 26:17SPEAKER_02: And so I think last year was kind of his breakout.
- 26:20SPEAKER_02: Hey, I'm actually a really good receiver.
- 26:22SPEAKER_02: I can play multiple snaps, I can play multiple games in a row, had some really big plays and some really big games.
- 26:28SPEAKER_02: He returned that onside kick in the Texas Bowl uh against Ole Miss at the end of the game.
- 26:33SPEAKER_02: He's gonna play outside.
- 26:35SPEAKER_02: I think he's a really, really solid senior to have on this receiving court, and he's definitely gonna be a dude.
- 26:41SPEAKER_03: What do you think?
- 26:42SPEAKER_03: Second, second uh biggest name on this list?
- 26:45SPEAKER_03: He's up there.
- 26:45SPEAKER_03: It's a cool name.
- 26:46SPEAKER_03: Look at the first one.
- 26:47SPEAKER_03: No, no, oh Look Funch, yeah, but I meant I meant as in star power.
- 26:51SPEAKER_02: Oh, um on outside receivers, I think so.
- 26:55SPEAKER_02: Obviously, number one we'll get to here in a bit.
- 26:57SPEAKER_02: We've already mentioned him, but yeah, I think he's probably got the same, and this is why I think JJ Sparkman might have a little trouble breaking out this year, is because of guys like Loick Funch.
- 27:06SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 27:08SPEAKER_04: So um it's a good problem to have.
- 27:10SPEAKER_04: Yeah, yeah.
- 27:11SPEAKER_03: No, we we definitely wanted to be tough for other guys to get get out there because of how good everybody else is.
- 27:17SPEAKER_03: So it's it's an okay problem.
- 27:18SPEAKER_02: It doesn't suck to have 13 of your 14 leading receivers come back and play another year with the program.
- 27:26SPEAKER_02: So this third one that I want to mention is probably the most underrated receiver in the last couple years for Texas Tech, and that's Xavier White, running back, turned wide receiver, super senior year, decided to come back.
- 27:38SPEAKER_02: Um, second in total receiving yards for their career as a Texas Tech Red Raider, just behind Miles Price.
- 27:45SPEAKER_02: Surprising stat.
- 27:47SPEAKER_02: Didn't see that coming.
- 27:48SPEAKER_02: I also didn't realize he had a three-game stretch last year, Xavier White, against West Virginia, Oklahoma State, and K-State, where eight receptions for 139 yards and a touchdown, eight receptions for 62 yards and a touchdown, and then nine receptions for 120 yards and a touchdown.
- 28:06SPEAKER_02: This is all during the time that I think Miles Price was injured, didn't play a lot, but that's production, dude.
- 28:11SPEAKER_02: And that's a that's production against good competition.
- 28:14SPEAKER_02: K-State and Oklahoma State were good teams last year.
- 28:16SPEAKER_03: So it's it's just it sounds like you're kind of explaining what is a quiet workhorse.
- 28:21SPEAKER_03: Yeah, he gets the job done.
- 28:23SPEAKER_03: And you failed to mention Monterey product, love it boy.
- 28:28SPEAKER_03: Yeah, absolutely.
- 28:29SPEAKER_03: So he quiet, a quiet producer, because he he's not really the guy that that pops out to you on the list whenever you talk about uh receiving stars.
- 28:35SPEAKER_03: But I mean, you obviously gonna have the guys that just get the job done without without the bells and whistles, so it's good to have a guy like that.
- 28:42SPEAKER_02: Very, very consistent, definitely a guy.
- 28:44SPEAKER_02: And you'll notice WVU, okay state, K-State, those were Baron Morton games for the most part.
- 28:50SPEAKER_02: So, you know, it could be Baron Morton really liked to throw to him, could be Miles Price wasn't playing those games, but Xavier White still a really, really reliable slot.
- 29:01SPEAKER_02: He could play outside, he mostly in the slot, though.
- 29:04SPEAKER_02: He's gonna be the guy to watch.
- 29:05SPEAKER_02: Let's talk about Miles Price.
- 29:08SPEAKER_02: 1,341 career receiving yards at Texas Tech.
- 29:12SPEAKER_02: That's the most of anybody on the team.
- 29:14SPEAKER_02: Tied for the most receptions last year with Jaron Bradley.
- 29:18SPEAKER_02: Small in stature, shifty as hell, big in energy, big in energy.
- 29:23SPEAKER_02: But I think the most important part of Miles Price's game is the vocal leadership that he provides on this team.
- 29:30SPEAKER_02: Dude is always the guy to watch on a mic'd up or practice video or whatever.
- 29:39SPEAKER_02: And that's and I'm not just saying that he's a great football player in his own right, but I think what he brings to this locker room is so much bigger than what he brings on the field.
- 29:48SPEAKER_03: He seems like he's a very intense dude.
- 29:50SPEAKER_03: Like he just the look in his eyes is very intense.
- 29:53SPEAKER_03: Not like in a scary way, but in a very, I guess, intensely positive way.
- 29:58SPEAKER_03: You can definitely see he's he's a captain in that locker room more than anything, and that's what you need out of your seniors as well.
- 30:04SPEAKER_03: So it's it's it's good to see him stepping up.
- 30:06SPEAKER_03: Like, like you really nailed it.
- 30:07SPEAKER_03: He's on every single video that Tech's like interviewing players.
- 30:10SPEAKER_03: They always like to mic him up, and he always seems to be at the meaty days representing the school as well.
- 30:14SPEAKER_03: So it's been great to have him around, man.
- 30:16SPEAKER_03: Is does he have an extra year?
- 30:17SPEAKER_03: Do you know, or is he is this it?
- 30:19SPEAKER_02: No, he could play next year if he wanted to.
- 30:20SPEAKER_02: Okay, cool.
- 30:21SPEAKER_02: Um, yeah, he's got another year if uh if he wants to, which I think he will do five foot eight on a good day.
- 30:27SPEAKER_02: Like he's not very big, and that's and that's not a bad thing.
- 30:29SPEAKER_02: I mean, Joe, baby.
- 30:31SPEAKER_02: Hey, Joeem Grant, five foot six, and he killed it.
- 30:34SPEAKER_02: So, you know, Miles Price doesn't, but he doesn't necessarily have like the speed you want from a guy that size.
- 30:40SPEAKER_02: He doesn't necessarily have the strength you want from a guy that size, and yet he still is productive and he still is shifty and takes three dudes to take him down.
- 30:49SPEAKER_02: It's honestly it's super impressive.
- 30:51SPEAKER_03: It's it's gotta come from the energy more than anything, then.
- 30:54SPEAKER_02: Yeah, no doubt, no doubt.
- 30:55SPEAKER_02: He's he does, in fact, have that dog in him.
- 30:58SPEAKER_03: Energizer bunny.
- 31:00SPEAKER_02: Energizer bunny for sure.
- 31:01SPEAKER_02: Last guy we need to hit on for the receiving core.
- 31:05SPEAKER_02: Jaron Bradley.
- 31:07SPEAKER_02: Highest upside.
- 31:10SPEAKER_02: If you don't know him now, you will know him after this season.
- 31:14SPEAKER_02: Highest upside of any receiver on this roster.
- 31:18SPEAKER_02: Six foot five, Bolitnikov watch list, preseason, all big 12.
- 31:24SPEAKER_02: He's also the only underclassman that is set to start for this team.
- 31:29SPEAKER_02: He is a sophomore, he is fantastic.
- 31:33SPEAKER_03: I mean, it's also just good to hear you say that stat for the rest of the team.
- 31:37SPEAKER_03: If this is the only underclassman to start, and you're okay with that at the receiver position, because you can kind of expect a guy to sneak in like that.
- 31:44SPEAKER_03: But yeah, this is obviously the goats in the making here.
- 31:47SPEAKER_03: Um time to start racking up some numbers.
- 31:50SPEAKER_03: And like you said, only a red shirt sophomore.
- 31:53SPEAKER_03: So homie's got time, but hopefully he's too good to stay.
- 31:57SPEAKER_03: Hopefully he's just racking up the numbers to go to the big show.
- 32:00SPEAKER_03: Um, but this is the year, man.
- 32:02SPEAKER_03: Him and Chuck better have a connection that's just magnetic because it's time to start lighting up some fireworks on the offensive side of the ball.
- 32:08SPEAKER_03: And obviously, this this connection is going to be the one we look for all year.
- 32:13SPEAKER_02: Yeah, leading receiver last season, 744 yards, six total touchdowns.
- 32:18SPEAKER_02: He also led the team in touchdowns.
- 32:20SPEAKER_02: I I just he's obviously getting a lot of hype, and with the hype comes preparation from the other side.
- 32:27SPEAKER_02: So we will see Jaron Bradley get doubled.
- 32:30SPEAKER_02: We will see them try to take him out of his game, but he was still the leading receiver last year and he still contributed.
- 32:37SPEAKER_02: And a lot towards the end of the year.
- 32:38SPEAKER_02: You look at that OU game, he had eight receptions, 173 yards, and a touchdown against the Sooners.
- 32:44SPEAKER_02: And he is just so damn good.
- 32:47SPEAKER_02: And I can see him being our next thousand-yard receiver.
- 32:51SPEAKER_02: What do you think?
- 32:52SPEAKER_02: Best player on the team?
- 32:54SPEAKER_02: Best player on the receiving core for sure.
- 32:55SPEAKER_02: I'm not gonna say best player on the team because with that, we got a lot of talent.
- 32:58SPEAKER_02: You know, you got Jalen Hutchings, you got it's just how you determine who's the best player.
- 33:03SPEAKER_02: You could look at the quarterbacks and say right, or the most important player.
- 33:06SPEAKER_03: So, I mean, you could absolutely say that Tyree Wilson was our best player last year.
- 33:10SPEAKER_03: That's true.
- 33:11SPEAKER_03: It's not like he's in this position that's you know glorious.
- 33:14SPEAKER_02: Most most likely to be an NFL star, I will give that to Jaron Bradley.
- 33:20SPEAKER_03: Yeah, and that's usually what you're looking for whenever you say stuff like that.
- 33:23SPEAKER_02: Absolutely, absolutely.
- 33:24SPEAKER_02: So, really exciting core, probably the most depth of any position on this team this year.
- 33:31SPEAKER_02: You could probably say that for a lot of Texas Tech teams, but just an all-around, I'm so hyped.
- 33:36SPEAKER_02: When I was doing research for this, I am so ready to watch these wide receivers work.
- 33:41SPEAKER_02: Also, new wide receiver coach and better wide receiver coach, juice.
- 33:45SPEAKER_02: Yes, dude.
- 33:46SPEAKER_02: Coach, not a snake like the other guys.
- 33:49SPEAKER_03: Coach Juice rules, he's awesome, super nice dude.
- 33:53SPEAKER_03: Uh well, so yeah, so you you had a great time researching the receivers.
- 33:56SPEAKER_03: I can't imagine why.
- 33:57SPEAKER_03: Very boring position group, yeah.
- 34:00SPEAKER_03: Especially a Texas tech.
- 34:02SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I don't know.
- 34:03SPEAKER_03: I don't I don't know what's duller, O-lineman or the wide receiver.
- 34:06SPEAKER_03: Imagine being Iowa, dude.
- 34:09SPEAKER_03: Right?
- 34:10SPEAKER_03: What do you even get excited about?
- 34:12SPEAKER_03: Like, oh man, another really big guy.
- 34:14SPEAKER_03: There you go.
- 34:15SPEAKER_03: Four-yard gain.
- 34:16SPEAKER_03: Obviously, you know, yeah, and I don't want this to sound ignorant or anything like that.
- 34:19SPEAKER_03: I am ignorant, obviously, but um, but um oh the O-line man, the O-line unit's like the most important group on the field, but it's just it's not fun to talk about at all.
- 34:30SPEAKER_02: Starts in the trenches, it depends on who you're talking to.
- 34:32SPEAKER_02: A lot of people like the O-line.
- 34:34SPEAKER_02: I like the O-line, I like talking, but yeah, this is the flashy stuff.
- 34:38SPEAKER_02: This is the fun stuff.
- 34:39SPEAKER_02: This is the slam dunk of football, right here.
- 34:41SPEAKER_03: Yeah, yeah.
- 34:42SPEAKER_03: This is this is what TechSech's known for.
- 34:44SPEAKER_03: This is our thing.
- 34:45SPEAKER_02: Absolutely.
- 34:46SPEAKER_03: Yeah, we had we had we had a lot, we had uh we had uh uh uh what was what was his name?
- 34:51SPEAKER_03: It was um uh shoot.
- 34:54SPEAKER_03: It was uh Moises Lobster Tree, lobster push.
- 35:00SPEAKER_03: What Moses lobster shrub?
- 35:05SPEAKER_03: Starlight receiver.
- 35:08SPEAKER_03: This is a really bad Michael Crabtree joke.
- 35:11SPEAKER_03: And I honestly hope you edit it out.
- 35:14SPEAKER_02: I might leave it in just because that was so bad.
- 35:19SPEAKER_02: Maybe you're just too dumb to get my humor.
- 35:22SPEAKER_02: Moises lobster shrub is what you just said on this podcast.
- 35:27SPEAKER_02: That's something that just came out of your mouth.
- 35:29SPEAKER_02: Yeah, are you surprised?
- 35:31SPEAKER_02: A little bit, a little bit.
- 35:33SPEAKER_02: Um that all-time yikes moment.
- 35:37SPEAKER_02: So, anyway, how about we talk about something else?
- 35:42SPEAKER_02: So, anyway, Steven, how about that Big 12 not deciding to expand?
- 35:47SPEAKER_03: Yeah, um, you know, a whole lot of people were saying, like, oh, he's just uh, you know, trying to keep uh the uh the attack plan on the down low, uh kind of like whenever the Big Ten said they were done.
- 35:59SPEAKER_03: But I I think we're done.
- 36:01SPEAKER_03: I I think it's because though, especially with the words that was used, they'll saying that you know they the they had they got their plan A.
- 36:07SPEAKER_03: So now they have the plan A, do you need to draw back on the plan B?
- 36:11SPEAKER_03: No, you don't need to.
- 36:13SPEAKER_03: Um, so for those of y'all that um perhaps are not familiar, a lot of people were uh suspecting that the Big 12 wasn't done expanding and thinking that perhaps we were targeting most likely Gonzaga and Yukon.
- 36:26SPEAKER_03: Obviously, there was some smoke around Oregon State, Washington State, Cal, and Stanford, maybe San Diego State, but I don't think any of that really got off the ground.
- 36:35SPEAKER_03: Um, but uh I'm sure Oregon State and Washington State are ringing where's uh where's where's our office?
- 36:41SPEAKER_03: Um we're in Dallas.
- 36:44SPEAKER_03: Oh what's it Plano?
- 36:46SPEAKER_03: I'm sure they know the offices in Plano are off the hook, but we're clearly you would get your the DFW listeners are gonna get you for that one.
- 36:54SPEAKER_03: Oh yeah, I know.
- 36:55SPEAKER_03: Well, hey, I I I sorry guys that I mixed up suburb A with suburb B.
- 37:00SPEAKER_03: Okay, it's yeah, they're all very different.
- 37:02SPEAKER_03: I understand.
- 37:03SPEAKER_02: I'm not from Dallas, I'm from Grapevine.
- 37:06SPEAKER_02: All right, shut up.
- 37:09SPEAKER_02: Frisco is not prosper, okay?
- 37:14SPEAKER_02: It's all Dallas, folks.
- 37:16SPEAKER_02: I hate to break it to you.
- 37:17SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I know.
- 37:18SPEAKER_03: So make it make a San Antonio joke or something.
- 37:20SPEAKER_03: All right, so whispers.
- 37:22SPEAKER_03: Uh next, but anyway, we're so off topic here.
- 37:25SPEAKER_03: So Yukon and Gonzaga were obviously still in the mix because apparently people are talking about how your mark was gonna go for the kill in basketball.
- 37:32SPEAKER_03: I'm glad we put the brakes on it though.
- 37:34SPEAKER_03: All right, what are your thoughts?
- 37:36SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I mean, I said it last week.
- 37:38SPEAKER_02: I was I wanted to see a number before that was like a for sure thing on what was gonna happen.
- 37:43SPEAKER_02: And I think your mark, I think your mark was understanding that these guys need to get either next to nothing if we want them in or what, because it doesn't make sense really to go to 18 teams.
- 37:54SPEAKER_02: Um, you know, if the if the money isn't right.
- 37:57SPEAKER_02: And now that he got his plan A, his four corner schools, he doesn't need to fret about you know adding a Zagger Yukon.
- 38:05SPEAKER_03: I don't know how you could have possibly added Yukon without absorbing the football team as well.
- 38:09SPEAKER_03: I just I don't know how you could have gotten away with that because right now they make what apparently it's about nine million in the big East, you know, in the Big 12, we make upwards of 30 million.
- 38:18SPEAKER_03: That would if you're if you're gonna like say even just match, which wouldn't even make any sense, why would they move if you just match it?
- 38:23SPEAKER_03: They're getting a third of what everybody else gets just for basketball.
- 38:27SPEAKER_02: Like that's but but that still might be too much.
- 38:30SPEAKER_03: Yeah, exactly.
- 38:31SPEAKER_03: That's what I mean.
- 38:32SPEAKER_03: So, and like I said, I feel like if you're gonna get Yukon, you probably just go full member and just get it all and like make him a full member, or perhaps a discounted member like a Washington and Oregon move.
- 38:41SPEAKER_03: But no, I think this is smart.
- 38:42SPEAKER_03: I mean, I understand wanting to go for the kill with basketball, but you you already had the kill, you've killed it, you've done, you're done.
- 38:48SPEAKER_03: You don't you've already reeled in Arizona and some other solid uh basketball programs, and you have freaking Kansas.
- 38:55SPEAKER_03: Like, what are you worried about at this point?
- 38:57SPEAKER_03: We we have basketball on lock.
- 38:59SPEAKER_03: I don't know if it's really at at risk of being overtaken by any other conference.
- 39:03SPEAKER_03: So I think you're good.
- 39:04SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I just I think you're in a really good spot right now.
- 39:07SPEAKER_02: Yeah, no matter what John Rosteen says, the big east is not going to be the best basketball conference next year.
- 39:12SPEAKER_02: It's gonna be the Big 12, like it is every year.
- 39:15SPEAKER_02: But no, I uh yeah, I think it's it's fine to pass on them if you want to add them later for sure.
- 39:21SPEAKER_02: Let's see what happens with the ACC before we do anything else.
- 39:24SPEAKER_03: 100%.
- 39:25SPEAKER_03: What so I mean, we're here we are in the theoretical here.
- 39:29SPEAKER_03: Would you want a Duke?
- 39:31SPEAKER_02: Um, I think Duke's a tough one to kind of gauge because I think you want more of a football revenue generator, like uh Virginia Tech or an NC state versus Duke.
- 39:46SPEAKER_03: No, I exact I know what you're saying, but if we're talking where if we're talking about basketball here, you're talking about an Alabama.
- 39:52SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I mean uh Duke, I think is gonna be a package deal with North Carolina.
- 39:56SPEAKER_02: I really do.
- 39:57SPEAKER_02: No matter where North Carolina goes, I think Duke is gonna follow.
- 40:00SPEAKER_02: I don't know.
- 40:01SPEAKER_02: I don't think so.
- 40:02SPEAKER_03: I don't think it's gonna happen.
- 40:03SPEAKER_03: I I well, a the state government has no allegiance to Duke, being a private school, they had they don't need they don't need to take care of them at all.
- 40:11SPEAKER_03: And B, I I don't understand what it because North Carolina could probably go to the the Big Ten or the SEC, and I don't know why the SEC or the Big Ten, especially in this era of consolidation, would want Duke.
- 40:25SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I mean I I really don't know at this point.
- 40:29SPEAKER_02: The ACC is such a large league right now.
- 40:31SPEAKER_02: I mean it's 14 teams, isn't it?
- 40:33SPEAKER_02: So yeah, you know, it's really up in the air on what happens with that.
- 40:38SPEAKER_02: If that completely implodes and we see Florida State Clemson going to the SEC and uh, I don't know, North Carolina, Virginia, NC State, Virginia going to the Big Ten or something like that.
- 40:51SPEAKER_02: Who knows?
- 40:51SPEAKER_02: Who knows?
- 40:52SPEAKER_02: What I'm thinking is the Big 12 holds off for the leftover schools that still have a lot of value that the SEC doesn't want to take on, the Big Ten doesn't want to take on, the Virginia Techs, the Louisville's NC State pit, whatever, give a little more help to the Cincinnati's and West Virginias of the world up there, a little closer competition, and I think we go from there.
- 41:10SPEAKER_02: But you know, I I don't think that happens for a while, at least a year or two, uh even longer.
- 41:16SPEAKER_02: Yeah, it could be longer than that.
- 41:17SPEAKER_02: I don't know.
- 41:18SPEAKER_02: But with all the expansion that has just happened, I think it's fine to take a little break from that.
- 41:22SPEAKER_03: Yeah, for sure.
- 41:23SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I don't think the ACC is gonna break up to like 2030 because I think as obviously once you get closer to the end of the meteorite steal, that's when they can start breaking away for a lot cheaper because you know, you're just it's kind of just paying out your contract sort of situation.
- 41:34SPEAKER_03: Um, I think the ones you mentioned were are the the no-brainers, like the Louisville, the NC State, the Virginia Tech, and uh possibly Pitt or Miami.
- 41:45SPEAKER_03: But I um but yeah, like it's like you said, I think you wait out, I think you waited out.
- 41:49SPEAKER_03: And you could get an awesome basketball school like Louisville, so it's that's you it just kind of adds to the repertoire.
- 41:55SPEAKER_03: And I know we love basketball, but obviously football is still the main contributor.
- 41:59SPEAKER_03: And I don't want you to I don't want to poison the league in a sense of what the big east did of just you know adding a lot of trying to make themselves a basketball school by while still having serious football schools that obviously poisoned and killed that league, and arguably that's what happened to the ACC as well.
- 42:14SPEAKER_03: So, because the ACC is a dead man walking right now with the way Florida State is talking.
- 42:18SPEAKER_03: So um, everyone looks at it as a basketball league anyway, even though even if it's not the best.
- 42:22SPEAKER_03: So, like you said, man, I think it's kind of a wait-and-see thing.
- 42:25SPEAKER_03: I I I I the reason why the only reason why I thought that it was a maybe a possibility that we went ahead and got Gonzaga and Yukon was after what Brett Yormark did and bolstering and securing the future of the conference, I figured that the president, the university presidents would let him do whatever he wanted, like fulfill his dream scenario that sounded like it was Yukon and Gonzaga.
- 42:46SPEAKER_03: Maybe that was the plan B in his head as well.
- 42:48SPEAKER_03: But kind of the whole like you give the man the keys to the mansion, he's he's earned a goddamn.
- 42:53SPEAKER_02: I don't know.
- 42:54SPEAKER_02: I I don't know about that mentality because if you just start giving ultimate trust, and I there's no reason not to trust Brett Yormark at this point, but you just start giving one dude the keys, it's not it, it may not lead to a good thing.
- 43:07SPEAKER_02: You know, we've even seen a guy who's very trustworthy in Kirby Hokud make some bad hires because he had the full keys.
- 43:13SPEAKER_02: So, you know, it's uh and you gotta make this as a conference.
- 43:18SPEAKER_02: You got enough good, solid members now that want the best.
- 43:22SPEAKER_02: I think there's still some uh some ones that don't want to keep up with the times, Arizona State.
- 43:28SPEAKER_03: But all the schools, dude.
- 43:29SPEAKER_03: Out of all of them, Arizona State, the most famous party schools in quotation marks.
- 43:34SPEAKER_03: I hate that phrase, but the most famous party school in the country.
- 43:38SPEAKER_03: You kidding me?
- 43:39SPEAKER_02: Ridiculous.
- 43:41SPEAKER_02: That guy, that guy needs to get a grip.
- 43:43SPEAKER_02: He has been a nightmare.
- 43:45SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I know, man.
- 43:46SPEAKER_03: Uh apparently he just discovered streaming, and man, what a what an amazing thing that is.
- 43:50SPEAKER_03: Did you know that you can and you don't have to turn to a channel on cable?
- 43:53SPEAKER_03: You can do whatever you want, whatever you want.
- 43:56SPEAKER_02: They got this thing, and it's got all the Disney movies on it.
- 43:59SPEAKER_02: It's got Marvel, it's got Star Wars, it's got Cinderella, like streaming.
- 44:06SPEAKER_02: You can watch it at any time.
- 44:08SPEAKER_02: Like your fingertips.
- 44:09SPEAKER_02: You don't have to get out the VHS tape and rewind it.
- 44:12SPEAKER_02: Insane.
- 44:13SPEAKER_02: It's all pre-recorded.
- 44:17SPEAKER_03: Um, but yeah, no, it's like no, I'm totally with you.
- 44:20SPEAKER_03: Bray Brett Yormark does ultimately work for the presidents at the end of the day.
- 44:22SPEAKER_03: I'll just kind of go into the psyche of it.
- 44:24SPEAKER_02: And I'm glad that ultimately exactly.
- 44:31SPEAKER_02: I mean, these guys all work together.
- 44:33SPEAKER_02: So yeah, no, 100%.
- 44:35SPEAKER_02: What do you think of Nelly, the Big 12 halftime show performer for year one?
- 44:43SPEAKER_03: I mean, you know me.
- 44:44SPEAKER_03: I am a hip-hop connoisseur.
- 44:46SPEAKER_03: I I know the ins and outs, the pop culture around it.
- 44:50SPEAKER_03: And I'm a big Nelly guy.
- 44:51SPEAKER_03: My favorites include Over and Over Again featuring Tim McGraw.
- 44:55SPEAKER_03: Great song and Cruz Nelly remix by Florida Georgia Line and Nelly.
- 45:04SPEAKER_02: I I think some people got in their feels about this a little bit.
- 45:09SPEAKER_02: Not in their feels, but like a little upset at what some people were commenting on Nelly being the guy.
- 45:15SPEAKER_02: This this is the level of artist that we were probably gonna get for year one of the Big 12 championship halftime performance.
- 45:22SPEAKER_02: He's he had very high popularity, not as very popular.
- 45:26SPEAKER_02: Think of it as who Texas Tech has gotten for their free game hype up concerts that they're putting on at in Lubbock.
- 45:35SPEAKER_02: You know, they got Coolio, they got DJ Diesel, DJ Diesel, guys that like you know, I guess it's cool to have Shaq there, and I'm not crapping on Texas Tech at all, but there's you weren't gonna get Taylor Swift to be the half-time performer at the Big 12 championship.
- 45:53SPEAKER_03: No, I I I have no issue with it.
- 45:55SPEAKER_03: He's he's kind of like that uh 2000s cool club music guy, you know, and it's just kind of it's gonna be fun.
- 46:01SPEAKER_03: Yeah, you're bringing back a pop star, who cares?
- 46:04SPEAKER_03: Like it could have been anybody.
- 46:05SPEAKER_03: Like, I think the only way that it would have been everyone was on board was if he they literally went and got Creed or nickel back or something.
- 46:12SPEAKER_03: And I think, well, A people would go crazy, you know, for the meme, but also the people that aren't only that plugged into the meme would be like, Oh, this is so stupid.
- 46:23SPEAKER_02: If they if they got Creed back together for a reunion show at the Big 12 championship, I would have skipped myself.
- 46:31SPEAKER_02: That would have been the greatest thing of all time.
- 46:35SPEAKER_03: Um, but uh he's gonna he's gonna uh reunite Florida Georgia Line with Cruise, the Nelly remix by Florida Georgia Line and Nelly and bring Tim McGraw up there on stage or over and over again by Tim McGraw featuring Nelly.
- 46:49SPEAKER_03: No, it's nothing's Nelly featuring Tim McGraw.
- 46:51SPEAKER_02: I listened to over and over again after Nelly was announced because we were talking about this.
- 46:56SPEAKER_02: Yeah, we did.
- 46:57SPEAKER_02: Tim McGraw has two verses in that entire song, one of which is just an echo of the same thing during the chorus, and then one he has like one six-word line in the rest of the song.
- 47:13SPEAKER_02: Well, you you don't want you you can't outshine the star, dude.
- 47:17SPEAKER_02: You can't, you can't.
- 47:18SPEAKER_02: Well, and when you only have like 10 total words in your entire song, it you know, it doesn't you can't out Nell the the Lee.
- 47:27SPEAKER_02: Did they get the wrong Nelly though?
- 47:29SPEAKER_03: Should Nelly Furtado have been the performer?
- 47:32SPEAKER_03: You know, but Steven, I know one Nelly Furtado song.
- 47:36SPEAKER_03: One.
- 47:37SPEAKER_03: How dare you! And I knew two Nelly songs, and that was over and over again by Nelly featuring Tim McGraw and Cruz.
- 47:44SPEAKER_02: Oh, you know hot in here.
- 47:46SPEAKER_02: You know hot in here.
- 47:47SPEAKER_03: Yes, I know hot in here.
- 47:48SPEAKER_03: Whatever, whenever I looked it up on Twitter on Spotify, I was like, okay, I know hot in here.
- 47:52SPEAKER_02: You know, just a dream, you know, some Nelly.
- 47:55SPEAKER_02: Sing it, sing it right now.
- 47:56SPEAKER_02: Sing it for the audience, sing it.
- 47:58SPEAKER_04: Wait, wait.
- 47:59SPEAKER_04: Oh, oh, oh.
- 48:02SPEAKER_04: No, you cannot play it.
- 48:03SPEAKER_02: You have to sing it.
- 48:05SPEAKER_02: Oh, skip to the chorus.
- 48:07SPEAKER_02: I don't know where the chorus is in the song.
- 48:10SPEAKER_02: I only have a timeline here.
- 48:12SPEAKER_02: I sing just like Nelly, it's one of my many talents.
- 48:15SPEAKER_03: No, but anyway, I think it's a cool idea.
- 48:17SPEAKER_03: I like that they're bringing in um outside talent for the for the halftime show.
- 48:21SPEAKER_03: Like the March 2 bands are great and all, but we already had this discussion, guys.
- 48:24SPEAKER_03: They have the rest of the freaking year.
- 48:26SPEAKER_03: I think in this nationally televised thing, it's okay to have a fun halftime show.
- 48:32SPEAKER_02: Nickelback would have been awesome.
- 48:33SPEAKER_03: That would have been awesome.
- 48:34SPEAKER_02: That would have been so freaking awesome.
- 48:37SPEAKER_03: Do a rock band next time, like just a 2000s rock band.
- 48:41SPEAKER_02: Bring a meme.
- 48:42SPEAKER_02: I don't care.
- 48:42SPEAKER_02: Like let's go.
- 48:43SPEAKER_02: Let's do it.
- 48:44SPEAKER_02: Who cares?
- 48:44SPEAKER_02: Yeah, everybody like Nickelback is they have some they have some lovers now.
- 48:49SPEAKER_02: Like they had a lot of haters back in the 2000s, but now under everybody's kind of understanding that that was stupid.
- 48:54SPEAKER_03: It was the cool band to hate, like it just happens every once in a while.
- 48:57SPEAKER_03: Like Justin Bieber, Nickelback, um full play.
- 49:02SPEAKER_03: Yeah, uh, yeah.
- 49:04SPEAKER_03: But I think cool play was on both sides of the spectrum where like it was really cool to like them, but also cool to hate them.
- 49:11SPEAKER_03: Imagine dragons.
- 49:12SPEAKER_03: Are they getting there?
- 49:13SPEAKER_03: Uh uh yeah, I guess so.
- 49:15SPEAKER_03: I guess so.
- 49:16SPEAKER_03: They were cool at first.
- 49:17SPEAKER_03: I liked them.
- 49:18SPEAKER_03: I do too.
- 49:19SPEAKER_03: Their first album's great.
- 49:20SPEAKER_03: Yeah, the first albums are always great.
- 49:23SPEAKER_03: So, but all right, all right, all right.
- 49:25SPEAKER_03: But yeah, like like the point stands.
- 49:27SPEAKER_03: Um point stands, Nelly dub.
- 49:30SPEAKER_03: Steven, the um here we are in the uh the approaching the academic year.
- 49:38SPEAKER_03: So sports are starting back up.
- 49:40SPEAKER_03: Your lady Raiders are on the soccer field right now and uh playing against New Mexico, or they're about to be.
- 49:46SPEAKER_03: And uh they won their first scrimmage against Denver.
- 49:49SPEAKER_03: But the only reason I'm just using this as a setup.
- 49:52SPEAKER_03: What sports are you most excited about this academic year?
- 49:58SPEAKER_02: What I mean is it what is there like what team?
- 50:01SPEAKER_02: Do I can I not say football?
- 50:03SPEAKER_02: You can say football.
- 50:04SPEAKER_02: Football.
- 50:06SPEAKER_02: Football?
- 50:06SPEAKER_02: Like more than basketball?
- 50:08SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I think so.
- 50:09SPEAKER_02: Um, football has the most hype it has since 2013-14, I think.
- 50:15SPEAKER_02: Um, under Cliff Kingsbury.
- 50:17SPEAKER_02: Jolie McGuire has something building.
- 50:19SPEAKER_02: I think we're getting some hype, even though we were left out of the preseason top 25.
- 50:24SPEAKER_02: Totally fine with that.
- 50:25SPEAKER_02: Yeah, don't bring that up.
- 50:27SPEAKER_02: We're still getting votes, which and the most votes of everybody that was left out, which is awesome.
- 50:32SPEAKER_02: But um, no, I think I think you're crazy or just a diehard of another sport if you aren't saying football.
- 50:40SPEAKER_03: Yeah, no, I agree.
- 50:41SPEAKER_03: I think it's I think football is a clear answer.
- 50:43SPEAKER_03: I just didn't know perhaps the excitement of uh the McCastlin era is perhaps nudging over that.
- 50:48SPEAKER_03: I'm I'm very excited.
- 50:49SPEAKER_02: I'm very excited for Grant McCastlinen and that team, and like the staff that they've that they've uh uh hired on getting uh Buffington as the GM, a guy who's been uh staple in high school and uh and uh AAU basketball, Dave Smart from Canada, who is a legend up there.
- 51:07SPEAKER_02: Uh he's got a stacked staff, and I think that he's got some really solid players.
- 51:13SPEAKER_02: And I am hyped for basketball season, but no, I mean, I think I think this football team has Big 12 championship aspirations, which that's gotta be your top.
- 51:22SPEAKER_03: Yeah, it hasn't happened in a really long time.
- 51:23SPEAKER_03: Uh, did you notice that the the football team is borrowing terminologies for positions from the basketball team, like such as general manager and such?
- 51:31SPEAKER_02: I I think that's happening across all of foot college football and college basketball.
- 51:36SPEAKER_03: You say that, but apparently I saw articles being written saying that TechStech is kind of on the cutting edge of NFLing their program.
- 51:43SPEAKER_02: They are.
- 51:43SPEAKER_02: They are.
- 51:44SPEAKER_02: I mean, they're giving the power to uh guys like James Blanchard, you know, to be the lead recruiter and the general manager of this football team, which is awesome because yeah, college sports are getting to pro level and they need somebody in that position to not only grow the team, but grow the brand and make those decisions um for the betterment of the program.
- 52:08SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I think this is a really fun experiment to watch, and uh it's gonna be cool, it's gonna be cool to see it unfold, man.
- 52:14SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I know it's really boring for us to both say football, but I think it's clearly football this year.
