- 0:03Speaker 1: Happy Friday people. Reminder programming note for those of you
- 0:11Speaker 1: that are the ft fam hardcore fans pointing this out
- 0:15Speaker 1: already for everyone else. Thursday Friday next week, no live shows.
- 0:21Speaker 1: We'll put some content out, like if you check our
- 0:23Speaker 1: podcast page, it'll still be bumping with content, but we
- 0:27Speaker 1: won't have a live show. And I just want to
- 0:29Speaker 1: remind everyone that next Thursday is Thanksgiving, so please prepare accordingly.
- 0:34Speaker 1: The day after that is off for many others, call
- 0:36Speaker 1: it Black Friday. If you want to do shopping or
- 0:39Speaker 1: do whatever you got to do, do it. God Father,
- 0:42Speaker 1: Today's a special day because AJ Prazinski's not on, and
- 0:46Speaker 1: we are going to start the show with a topic
- 0:49Speaker 1: that is near and dear to his heart. We are
- 0:52Speaker 1: going to talk about the Chicago Cubs without Aj. That
- 0:57Speaker 1: means no little jokes from about how much he loves
- 1:02Speaker 1: Slash hates the Cubbies. So this will be like a
- 1:05Speaker 1: very neutral conversation.
- 1:08Speaker 2: It might it might kick off something even better. You
- 1:11Speaker 2: never know, especially with the vaunted Cobies there in Chicago.
- 1:15Speaker 2: But yes, I feel it's gonna be. It's gonna be
- 1:18Speaker 2: a non partial time for us here. So we're gonna
- 1:21Speaker 2: we're gonna put our best foot forward and talk about
- 1:23Speaker 2: some off season stuff about them, and hopefully people understand
- 1:27Speaker 2: where we're coming from without aj.
- 1:29Speaker 1: Okay, so each of you raise your right hand and
- 1:32Speaker 1: tell me, I solemnly swear that I'm just going to
- 1:37Speaker 1: comment on the Cubs as if any neutral fan of
- 1:40Speaker 1: the game would comment on the Cubs, and You're not
- 1:43Speaker 1: gonna have to recite this. I'm just gonna need a
- 1:45Speaker 1: yes or no, or an I do or and I
- 1:47Speaker 1: don't that you don't care, respectfully if the Cubs finish
- 1:51Speaker 1: in first or last next year. This is a national show.
- 1:54Speaker 1: Can I get an I do or a yes from Krats?
- 1:57Speaker 3: Yes?
- 1:58Speaker 1: Okay, Todd, Yes, I do same here. Yes, let's charge
- 2:05Speaker 1: let's charge out, all right, So what do we have here,
- 2:09Speaker 1: Let's size up the Cubs off season. Let's give him
- 2:12Speaker 1: some love right now and see what they need to do.
- 2:14Speaker 1: Kratz is making a face because he probably saw the
- 2:17Speaker 1: tweet that's going to kick off the conversation. George Offfman,
- 2:20Speaker 1: who does some radio work and a bunch of other
- 2:21Speaker 1: things out in Chicago, puts this tweet out there, told
- 2:25Speaker 1: that the Cubs were stunned in Managa accepted the qualifying
- 2:30Speaker 1: offer they expected to get. A draft pick hampers their
- 2:34Speaker 1: off season spending plans. We can show the next one too.
- 2:37Speaker 1: The Cubs currently have around one hundred and ninety million
- 2:40Speaker 1: in payroll. The tax threshold which many serve I'm going
- 2:43Speaker 1: to add this part. Many use this as their de
- 2:46Speaker 1: facto salary cap is two forty four mil. Affman says
- 2:51Speaker 1: the Cubs don't want to exceed it. They think that's
- 2:53Speaker 1: enough for a top free agent pitcher, a hitter, bullpen,
- 2:56Speaker 1: help arbitration cases, and perhaps paying Pete ker Armstrong on
- 3:01Speaker 1: an extension. You'll need money at the trade deadline. Creative
- 3:04Speaker 1: trade Sandy el Contra question Mark crats your.
- 3:07Speaker 3: Thoughts, what's the big deal?
- 3:11Speaker 4: They got a starter that had a below a four ERA,
- 3:15Speaker 4: he came back from an injury, didn't wasn't as good,
- 3:18Speaker 4: Like they have a one year starter who wasn't All
- 3:22Speaker 4: Star two years ago. Like, I don't see what the
- 3:26Speaker 4: big deal is, And don't get me started on the
- 3:28Speaker 4: payroll stuff like the salary cap at two hundred and
- 3:32Speaker 4: forty four million. For the Cubs to be hitting that,
- 3:36Speaker 4: if you're mad as a if you're mad as a
- 3:39Speaker 4: front office that you offered somebody twenty two million dollars
- 3:45Speaker 4: and they accepted it. You need to only be mad
- 3:50Speaker 4: at one person. And there's stun that he accepted it.
- 3:54Speaker 4: There's stun that he accepted twenty two million dollars when
- 3:57Speaker 4: next year you could just go back for another one
- 4:00Speaker 4: year deal after that and not make not make near
- 4:04Speaker 4: twenty two million. I just I have a hard time
- 4:07Speaker 4: believing that this organization truly wants to win if these
- 4:13Speaker 4: comments are true.
- 4:17Speaker 2: Yeah, I would agree with you, yeah, wholeheartedly. It's why
- 4:22Speaker 2: it's a qualifying offer. It's decided by a player, and
- 4:24Speaker 2: all of a sudden, you're gonna be mad at that player,
- 4:27Speaker 2: especially a pretty good left handed pitcher that I think
- 4:30Speaker 2: most teams would want on their squad. I would go
- 4:33Speaker 2: on the opposite side and say, the other teams are
- 4:35Speaker 2: a little upset if you want the truth, you know,
- 4:39Speaker 2: he did have a little injury. But at the same token,
- 4:41Speaker 2: this guy is a pretty good lefty. When he's on
- 4:43Speaker 2: and that change up and everything's working, he's a dominant
- 4:46Speaker 2: pitcher and he's pretty good. He's not going to overpower you,
- 4:49Speaker 2: as we already know. But yeah, there, I mean, why
- 4:53Speaker 2: are you going to start a relationship off like that
- 4:54Speaker 2: or start the new year for baseball terms off, Man,
- 4:57Speaker 2: we're pretty upset that he took the offer. What's going
- 5:00Speaker 2: on here? Don't people want to win? That's where I
- 5:02Speaker 2: get confused.
- 5:04Speaker 1: And I'm actually pretty sure that with a qualifying offer,
- 5:06Speaker 1: you can't trade the player right off the jump. There's
- 5:09Speaker 1: a deadline that's built in there. I believe that it's
- 5:13Speaker 1: June where you can't trade the player until a certain date.
- 5:17Speaker 1: I learned that recently, and maybe I saw bad info,
- 5:19Speaker 1: but I'm pretty sure I'm right on that. Let me
- 5:21Speaker 1: add to the table here. First off, Crats, I'm going
- 5:23Speaker 1: to disagree with you. I think the Cubs do want
- 5:25Speaker 1: to compete and contend in all of that. Right, this
- 5:28Speaker 1: isn't a bottom of the barrel payroll. I think what
- 5:29Speaker 1: you mean is their revenue to their payroll is not
- 5:33Speaker 1: commeasure it. Right. It's probably a top five team in
- 5:36Speaker 1: terms of how much they pull in. They operate more
- 5:38Speaker 1: in the mid market range in terms of what they
- 5:41Speaker 1: bring in talent wise with their payroll. I mean, this
- 5:44Speaker 1: was a team that made the playoffs last year, took
- 5:46Speaker 1: the Brewers to the brink and fell short. Should they
- 5:50Speaker 1: be doing more. Should they be the big bad n
- 5:52Speaker 1: L Central spenders, no doubt, and they built up to
- 5:55Speaker 1: get to this point. They've done a but nice job
- 5:57Speaker 1: or a better job of building. Pitching a weak point
- 6:01Speaker 1: for THEO and Hoyer during that run, and I think
- 6:03Speaker 1: they've gotten better in that department. Kate Horton, I think
- 6:06Speaker 1: is a prime example. They used to just buy pitching.
- 6:08Speaker 1: If they don't want to buy pitching as much, you
- 6:10Speaker 1: got to develop it. I think they've done that better.
- 6:12Speaker 1: They will still spend on pitching. I'm not backing them, okay,
- 6:15Speaker 1: I want to be clear, like they definitely should be
- 6:17Speaker 1: operating more towards the high twos, if not three hundred,
- 6:20Speaker 1: and they could buy the whole and free agent crop
- 6:22Speaker 1: if they wanted to. But if they're playing in this
- 6:25Speaker 1: game right and they're going to spend probably is my
- 6:27Speaker 1: guest between thirty and fifty mil tops on free agents.
- 6:33Speaker 1: I'm talking on what they're going to make in twenty
- 6:36Speaker 1: twenty six. Then we can refer to Patrick Mooney, who
- 6:39Speaker 1: writes for The Athletic and is on our Great North
- 6:41Speaker 1: Side Territory show. He said they've already been linked to
- 6:44Speaker 1: several pitchers who rejected qualifying offers notable names such as
- 6:47Speaker 1: from Barbaldez, Dyln't See, Michael King, Ranger Suarez, and Zach Gallen.
- 6:54Speaker 3: Yeah, I would agree with you.
- 6:55Speaker 4: I mean what I said was definitely more in line
- 6:57Speaker 4: with what you said. They should be the juggernaut of
- 7:01Speaker 4: the NL Central because those other teams have some spending issues.
- 7:07Speaker 4: The Cubs do not. And when I say they're choosing
- 7:10Speaker 4: to not, I should have elaborated and said they're choosing
- 7:13Speaker 4: to not be a behemoth in the NL Central. They're saying, well,
- 7:18Speaker 4: you know what, I'm about to run a race, one
- 7:21Speaker 4: hundred yard dash, and the other people I'm running against
- 7:24Speaker 4: aren't that fast, so I'm just not gonna try that hard.
- 7:27Speaker 4: But they keep getting passed up. They keep getting passed up,
- 7:31Speaker 4: And I think if you truly own the Cubs to
- 7:34Speaker 4: win year in and year out, I think it is
- 7:36Speaker 4: something that they need to go over the salary cap.
- 7:40Speaker 4: They need because they easily can because they're bringing in
- 7:44Speaker 4: tons of money.
- 7:44Speaker 3: It's the same thing we say all the time about
- 7:46Speaker 3: the Cubs.
- 7:47Speaker 4: But I think their spending should not be thwarted, it
- 7:54Speaker 4: should not be curbed. Just because Shoda added more depth
- 8:00Speaker 4: to your rotation. The organization needs six or seven solid pitchers,
- 8:07Speaker 4: and it's okay if they go after a Frameber, it's
- 8:10Speaker 4: okay if they give a longer term deal.
- 8:13Speaker 3: To a Zach Gallan.
- 8:14Speaker 4: I think it brings it brings extra excitement to the
- 8:17Speaker 4: NL Central when the big boys, the big boy in
- 8:21Speaker 4: the NL Central spends its money, and I think it
- 8:25Speaker 4: makes everybody else in NL Central spend a little bit
- 8:27Speaker 4: of money to keep up. Because right now, why would
- 8:29Speaker 4: the Brewers say, hey, you know what, we're going to
- 8:30Speaker 4: push in because the Cubs are really loading up.
- 8:33Speaker 3: No, they loaded up with Kyle Tucker for one year.
- 8:36Speaker 4: To me, I thought that was really the jumping off
- 8:38Speaker 4: point that the Cubs could have said, Hey, we brought
- 8:41Speaker 4: in Tucker, we're now extending him. And I was told,
- 8:44Speaker 4: and now I've been shown, Eh, you know what we're not.
- 8:48Speaker 4: We just wanted him for one year.
- 8:50Speaker 1: Yeah, that's going to turn out to be rental and
- 8:53Speaker 1: Todd father pitching is going to be the focus for
- 8:56Speaker 1: this team. So here's my thing, going back to Imanaga,
- 8:58Speaker 1: I mean, you're not asking him to be year one
- 9:00Speaker 1: coming up next year. He should be her three or
- 9:02Speaker 1: or four. Right, Presumably they should land one of the
- 9:05Speaker 1: names that I mentioned in terms of the A or
- 9:09Speaker 1: B tier of free agents starting pitching right, and then
- 9:13Speaker 1: Kate Horton looked brilliant last year, especially in the second
- 9:16Speaker 1: half as a rookie. He should slote in nicely in
- 9:19Speaker 1: that rotation. Justin Steele is going to come back at
- 9:21Speaker 1: some point this year. Matthew Boyd had a really nice
- 9:24Speaker 1: season for them. Like there are some notable names in there,
- 9:27Speaker 1: tye On as a back end guy, they actually have
- 9:30Speaker 1: some depth. They definitely need a guy that's a playoff
- 9:33Speaker 1: starter in my mind, so hopefully they set their sights
- 9:37Speaker 1: on that and then yeah, they're probably going to still
- 9:39Speaker 1: have to pick up bat Kyle Tucker didn't have his
- 9:42Speaker 1: best year, but he still had a banger year and
- 9:44Speaker 1: you're losing him.
- 9:45Speaker 2: Yeah, and he's he could be looking, you know from
- 9:48Speaker 2: reading all the articles and you know, talking with a couple,
- 9:50Speaker 2: he can be looking for a big pay day. I
- 9:52Speaker 2: know he's second half was, but this dude can hit,
- 9:56Speaker 2: he can play. But you know, back to your point
- 9:59Speaker 2: about pitching, I know a lot of teams that need pitching,
- 10:02Speaker 2: and listen, when you have depth, that's one thing that's
- 10:04Speaker 2: that's good Okay, depth is good. You can put guys
- 10:07Speaker 2: in here and there, but you need you need like
- 10:10Speaker 2: a freed You need uh, you know, one of those
- 10:14Speaker 2: top dogs that is gonna be there the whole time,
- 10:17Speaker 2: you know, like uh, you know Dylan Ceese or you know,
- 10:20Speaker 2: just a guy that's like, oh, we got to face
- 10:22Speaker 2: him again. It's not like, all right, we got this guy. Okay, Yeah,
- 10:25Speaker 2: you could put in whoever you want. If you got depth,
- 10:27Speaker 2: that's good, but you need one or two dogs and Scott,
- 10:30Speaker 2: they got to want to come to Chicago too, so
- 10:32Speaker 2: you're gonna have to get spice everything up. So I'm
- 10:35Speaker 2: not saying it's a bad city to play in, but
- 10:38Speaker 2: you know, between a couple other cities, I don't know
- 10:40Speaker 2: what guys are gonna do again, so you put the offer.
- 10:42Speaker 2: At least you could do is put the offer out
- 10:44Speaker 2: there to some guys. But they also have to say
- 10:46Speaker 2: yes and come over. So it's it's a tricky, tricky
- 10:49Speaker 2: side of the business that you know, most don't understand.
- 10:51Speaker 1: We we have a resident Cubs fan in the ft
- 10:55Speaker 1: chat in many days, Mike ge who asks great questions
- 10:58Speaker 1: and he's dialed first off, he said, and census on Twitter,
- 11:00Speaker 1: and more importantly among Cubs beat members is that this
- 11:04Speaker 1: wasn't a credible report. Okay, well we're bringing it up.
- 11:08Speaker 1: And then he also brought up Showeda's numbers, specifically with
- 11:13Speaker 1: first inning issues. This is what I wanted to ask you, guys.
- 11:16Speaker 1: So SHOWDA was awesome in twenty twenty four, really good
- 11:19Speaker 1: still in twenty twenty five. This is Mike g writing
- 11:22Speaker 1: second through eighth inning ERA three oh one, first inning
- 11:25Speaker 1: ERA seven to two zero. So it seems something that
- 11:28Speaker 1: can reasonably be fixed.
- 11:32Speaker 3: There's a lot of guys to have that.
- 11:33Speaker 4: Yeah, some of the best pitchers, some of the best pitchers,
- 11:36Speaker 4: their worst innings are the first innings. And I'm not
- 11:38Speaker 4: saying he's a cy young candidate or you know, if
- 11:41Speaker 4: he hadn't had those first innings, he would have been.
- 11:43Speaker 4: But the first inning is when you get to some
- 11:47Speaker 4: guys because then they settle in, they get in the
- 11:49Speaker 4: rhythm of the game, and it's a lot tougher because
- 11:51Speaker 4: you're starting to feel your pitches out.
- 11:52Speaker 3: Can that be changed?
- 11:57Speaker 4: Obviously, he's got to look at To me, the more
- 11:58Speaker 4: glaring thing was Showeda was the home runs All of
- 12:02Speaker 4: a sudden, those balls that he was getting the swings
- 12:04Speaker 4: and misses or the pop ups to then be able
- 12:07Speaker 4: to get the finish pitch we're going out of the ballpark.
- 12:10Speaker 3: To me, that's the biggest thing he did.
- 12:13Speaker 4: That lack did that loss in velocity create a little
- 12:18Speaker 4: bit less deception where guys were now squaring it up,
- 12:21Speaker 4: because to me, that's the overall glaring. Whether it happens
- 12:24Speaker 4: in the first inning like in the playoffs, or if
- 12:27Speaker 4: it happens part way through like it shows me he's
- 12:31Speaker 4: either not fully healthy or he's going to have a
- 12:36Speaker 4: consistent dip in velocity. And you know, he's going to
- 12:40Speaker 4: have to learn to be a pitch to different locations
- 12:43Speaker 4: because that velocity is not getting that swing and miss
- 12:45Speaker 4: or foul tip on the heater that he wants.
- 12:48Speaker 2: Mhm.
- 12:48Speaker 1: And as to if the report's true or not, we're
- 12:50Speaker 1: never going to know. But I mean, we at least
- 12:53Speaker 1: know that they didn't love Shoda enough to give him
- 12:56Speaker 1: that club option that they had, and then you know,
- 12:58Speaker 1: showed it didn't take on his lower player option, he
- 13:01Speaker 1: took on this qualifying offer. So we will never know.
- 13:04Speaker 1: I mean, we only only the owner really knows. Tom Ricketts,
- 13:07Speaker 1: But doctor D said could have easily got three to
- 13:10Speaker 1: five years at twenty MILLI a year from another team,
- 13:13Speaker 1: even though he's not worth that. I'm going to disagree
- 13:16Speaker 1: on that front. I think that's too much that he
- 13:20Speaker 1: would have commanded here, and now he's going to wipe
- 13:22Speaker 1: away this qualifying offer draft pick that's attached to him
- 13:25Speaker 1: for when he hits the free agent market next year.
- 13:29Speaker 4: I think his number, I think his number was under
- 13:32Speaker 4: that fifty million threshold, and which affects the draft pick.
- 13:38Speaker 4: So teams that are sitting there going, Okay, this guy's
- 13:42Speaker 4: thirty two years old, what are we going to give
- 13:44Speaker 4: him because we're getting or giving up a draft pick,
- 13:49Speaker 4: they're very hesitant, and I forget we had somebody on
- 13:52Speaker 4: and they were talking about how much that draft pick
- 13:55Speaker 4: is worth in the millions, and essentially owners are just
- 13:59Speaker 4: taking off of guys contracts, their salaries. So I have
- 14:03Speaker 4: a hard time, hard time believing he would have gotten
- 14:07Speaker 4: even three years. To me, I thought he probably would
- 14:09Speaker 4: have been in like the thirty five to thirty eight
- 14:13Speaker 4: for two years type of range, and giving up a
- 14:16Speaker 4: draft pick too could could have squashed that even more.
- 14:21Speaker 1: And the other comment here Todd Father Neil kat saying
- 14:25Speaker 1: why are both Chicago teams operating like small market teams?
- 14:29Speaker 1: First off, the clubs make a lot more money than
- 14:31Speaker 1: the White Sox, that's a fact. But still he's got
- 14:34Speaker 1: a great point. Those teams market wise should be leading
- 14:37Speaker 1: the pack in their respective divisions in terms of how
- 14:40Speaker 1: much they invest into the ball club, and they don't.
- 14:42Speaker 1: You could say we're a broken record for complaining about
- 14:45Speaker 1: how some teams spend and some teams don't. But Chicago
- 14:48Speaker 1: fans definitely have a strong case.
- 14:50Speaker 2: Yeah they do. And like we said before, Kraftsy's like,
- 14:53Speaker 2: don't let me get started with all this money talk
- 14:56Speaker 2: and that stuff. It's they have the money, and a
- 14:59Speaker 2: lot of teams make more money than others. But still
- 15:01Speaker 2: these owners wouldn't be in this business if it wasn't,
- 15:05Speaker 2: you know, profitable for these guys. So what I love
- 15:08Speaker 2: to see the White Sox go out and spend. Yes,
- 15:10Speaker 2: it's just not their m right now. But the Cubs
- 15:13Speaker 2: I have no reason not to go out and try
- 15:15Speaker 2: and find some super super athletes to help this team
- 15:19Speaker 2: get over the hump again and get back to a
- 15:20Speaker 2: World Series.
- 15:22Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 15:22Speaker 1: To me, I think the Kyle Tucker acquisition is everything
- 15:26Speaker 1: you need to know. It's not about what they're doing
- 15:27Speaker 1: right now, Kratz. It's the fact that even when he
- 15:29Speaker 1: came on board, it didn't sound like there were ever
- 15:31Speaker 1: real discussions about an extension, and that should tell you
- 15:33Speaker 1: everything you need to know about where the Cubs are at.
- 15:36Speaker 1: You give up assets, you get a guy like this,
- 15:38Speaker 1: you clearly value him highly, not highly enough to shout
- 15:41Speaker 1: out big dollars. I think they're just one of those
- 15:43Speaker 1: teams that doesn't believe in those big ass contracts. The
- 15:46Speaker 1: Asters do this sometimes too, They don't go past a
- 15:48Speaker 1: certain point.
- 15:50Speaker 3: This is the facts, not our opinion. It's the facts.
- 15:53Speaker 3: Look at the numbers.
- 16:01Speaker 1: Spreading rumor's time. Let's get ready to load up to tweets. Okay,
- 16:04Speaker 1: so this is what happens more and more in the
- 16:07Speaker 1: off season, really all the time nowadays. On social media.
- 16:10Speaker 1: Someone says something, someone who's credible, someone who does a
- 16:13Speaker 1: lot of homework, and then aggregators take bits and pieces
- 16:17Speaker 1: and make it pop. They put a little sizzle on it. Wow,
- 16:21Speaker 1: and then people go crazy, Yeah, just a little snap
- 16:24Speaker 1: crackle pop for Todd Father. I get excited and be like,
- 16:27Speaker 1: look at this, look at this post. It has a
- 16:29Speaker 1: million views on it. Yeah, but Todd, the problem is
- 16:34Speaker 1: it's it's not actually true. It's a fictional post. So
- 16:37Speaker 1: let's do it. Let's show the two tweets, and it's
- 16:39Speaker 1: kind of a problem. It could have been a problem
- 16:41Speaker 1: segment for Todd father. So here is the Yankees only
- 16:44Speaker 1: on Twitter. The Rangers are looking to shed payroll and
- 16:47Speaker 1: are reportedly open to moving Corey Seger. Segert isn't on
- 16:50Speaker 1: the Yankees no trade list, which means he'd be eligible
- 16:53Speaker 1: to be dealt to New York with no veto rights,
- 16:56Speaker 1: and he credits Evan Grant for putting out this report.
- 17:00Speaker 1: Our buddy Evan comes out on Twitter himself and says,
- 17:03Speaker 1: here's what I said about Seeker. I did not say
- 17:06Speaker 1: the Rangers are open to moving him. I suggested they
- 17:09Speaker 1: could have to explore the possibility of moving a big
- 17:12Speaker 1: contract if it cuts payroll below two hundred million dollars.
- 17:17Speaker 1: See the differences there top oither. We had this too.
- 17:23Speaker 1: Bob Nightingale, who's one of our our regular insiders now
- 17:26Speaker 1: was talking about how maybe the Padres would move someone
- 17:29Speaker 1: like Fernando Tatis. Here's actually a big problem among the
- 17:33Speaker 1: audience these days because Jim Bowden suffers from this sometimes too.
- 17:37Speaker 1: Insiders and analysts will throw out ideas and then people
- 17:42Speaker 1: will aggregate it, and then they will go after them, like, oh,
- 17:45Speaker 1: Bob says they're gonna trade tatis, and when they don't
- 17:47Speaker 1: trade tattis, are gonna be like, see Bob, you didn't
- 17:49Speaker 1: know they're trading him. He's just bringing up ideas. This
- 17:53Speaker 1: is what we do in the off season. Your thoughts.
- 17:55Speaker 2: Yeah, this is just right up my alley. I can't
- 17:58Speaker 2: stand if somebody says some you gotta be I guess
- 18:01Speaker 2: you gotta be so specific in what you say. It's
- 18:04Speaker 2: not gonna tell young kids today. These young kids have
- 18:06Speaker 2: Twitter and Instagram by dude double and triple. Check what
- 18:09Speaker 2: you write on there. If you write a word wrong
- 18:12Speaker 2: and or you spell it wrong, or do this. I mean,
- 18:15Speaker 2: John Hayman had the one. Was it Arson Judge or
- 18:18Speaker 2: whatever the heck that? I don't know what it was,
- 18:21Speaker 2: but long story short, he didn't say anything of the sort,
- 18:24Speaker 2: and somebody takes it like, oh, I'm gonna make this
- 18:26Speaker 2: spicy so I can get some likes and love.
- 18:29Speaker 3: I don't like it.
- 18:31Speaker 2: I don't like it at all. It's fishy.
- 18:33Speaker 4: Sometimes I say things on the show that just make
- 18:36Speaker 4: Todd Mann. Just to say things, that's it. You don't
- 18:39Speaker 4: want to make I want to make Todd mad. And
- 18:41Speaker 4: I feel like that's kind of what can happen on
- 18:43Speaker 4: Twitter sometimes. But let's explore it so somebody can take
- 18:47Speaker 4: my words out of out of context. Who wouldn't want
- 18:51Speaker 4: Corey Seeger? Why wouldn't the Rangers want a little payroll shedding.
- 18:57Speaker 4: That's a lot of payroll shedding. There's but to me,
- 19:00Speaker 4: who has more value the two guys that you have
- 19:03Speaker 4: that you could shed payroll with. It's Corey Seeger and
- 19:07Speaker 4: Marcus Simeon. I don't think anybody's really clamoring after Marcus Simeon.
- 19:12Speaker 4: You could shed, you could get rid of the payroll,
- 19:15Speaker 4: but you're gonna have to pay for it. So it's
- 19:16Speaker 4: not really just getting it's just getting rid of the player.
- 19:19Speaker 4: Corey Seger. He would slot into any spot. But the
- 19:24Speaker 4: thing you have to remember is if it doesn't happen
- 19:26Speaker 4: this year, he gets his ten and five rights after
- 19:30Speaker 4: this season. So if they're exploring it, if please capital letters,
- 19:35Speaker 4: if it has to happen this year, it has to
- 19:38Speaker 4: happen before he hits that ten and five.
- 19:42Speaker 1: It's the same thing we just spoke to Ken Rosenthal
- 19:45Speaker 1: about with Kitel Marte. There is a deadline for a team,
- 19:49Speaker 1: and that's why writers will bring something like that up
- 19:52Speaker 1: as an idea, because if they're ever going to do it,
- 19:54Speaker 1: now is the time or you have no more power.
- 19:56Speaker 1: And someone like Corey Seeger probably is not going to
- 19:59Speaker 1: movee right, He's won his titles. He settled in Texas,
- 20:03Speaker 1: you have the income tax, so you'd have to actually
- 20:05Speaker 1: make up that difference if he goes anywhere else. A
- 20:07Speaker 1: lot of things changed suddenly for a big money player.
- 20:10Speaker 1: But do we think he's going to be traded? Raise
- 20:12Speaker 1: your hand if you think he's going to be traded
- 20:13Speaker 1: on our ray out here exactly, thank you. But it
- 20:17Speaker 1: was a fun twenty four hours for the Secret Family
- 20:19Speaker 1: and for Evan Grant coming up to you for the Yankees.
- 20:24Speaker 2: Yeah, always, Yank, of course it is.
- 20:27Speaker 5: That's what he said, That's what he said, That's what
- 20:31Speaker 5: he said.
- 20:32Speaker 1: That's what he said. Beef has emerged. Adam Outavino out
- 20:38Speaker 1: of the sport and into the media world a friend
- 20:41Speaker 1: of ours on this show, and he was very critical
- 20:44Speaker 1: on his show of the Mets in the way that
- 20:47Speaker 1: they manage their pitching staff. So he has a pod
- 20:49Speaker 1: called Baseball and Coffee, and I'll let him describe what happened,
- 20:53Speaker 1: and then we'll go over the follow up. There have
- 20:55Speaker 1: been some good articles research wise to try and kind
- 20:59Speaker 1: of back up or go against what he said. So
- 21:03Speaker 1: first here's Adam Ottobino popping off.
- 21:06Speaker 5: And then this is the other issue. And this is
- 21:07Speaker 5: something that really upsets me deep in my soul because man,
- 21:12Speaker 5: I've talked about, talked with every single one of these
- 21:14Speaker 5: guys about having to take control over their own career
- 21:16Speaker 5: because the team is not going to keep them healthy.
- 21:18Speaker 5: They need to find a way to keep themselves healthy.
- 21:20Speaker 5: McGill goes down, Garrett goes down, Krannic goes down, Daniel
- 21:24Speaker 5: Nunials goes down, Danny Jung goes down, all Tommy John's,
- 21:26Speaker 5: not to mention Drew Smith really headed Tommy John.
- 21:29Speaker 3: It's just too many injuries.
- 21:30Speaker 5: So they have to figure out something, whether it's their protocols,
- 21:33Speaker 5: whether it's the way Carlos uses these dudes, you know,
- 21:36Speaker 5: so haphazardly, you know, whether they even care about keeping
- 21:39Speaker 5: the guys healthy or not, but they need to be
- 21:41Speaker 5: better than this. This is embarrassing. This is actually pathetic,
- 21:46Speaker 5: like pathetic. I would have never let this happen. If
- 21:48Speaker 5: I was on the team last year, at least half
- 21:49Speaker 5: these guys wouldn't have blown out. I would have protected
- 21:51Speaker 5: these dudes myself. I would have to jump in front
- 21:52Speaker 5: of them myself. Fortunately, there was nobody willing to stand
- 21:55Speaker 5: up and talk.
- 21:55Speaker 3: To Carlos this year. That was just me.
- 21:57Speaker 5: I guess, so bit of an issue there, And if
- 22:01Speaker 5: they continue down this path, they're going to be because
- 22:06Speaker 5: you cannot injure this many dudes every year. And it's
- 22:10Speaker 5: hopefully this is not an actual strategy because it's freaking
- 22:13Speaker 5: pathetic and it's not player friendly and eventually people will
- 22:16Speaker 5: catch on. And it's funny as they were bragging about
- 22:18Speaker 5: how good they were keeping people healthy the year before
- 22:20Speaker 5: and had nothing to do with them. So yeah, I'm
- 22:22Speaker 5: a little annoyed because these are guys that should be playing.
- 22:25Speaker 3: So it pisses me.
- 22:28Speaker 1: Wow, And Adam Outabino is a pretty chill dude, and
- 22:30Speaker 1: he popped off. And Will Salmon, who covers the team
- 22:34Speaker 1: among other things, did an article today. He put it out.
- 22:38Speaker 1: He spoke tout Abino, who kind of commented like, I
- 22:42Speaker 1: like everything else about Mendy, but he said, you know,
- 22:45Speaker 1: he's kind of backed up what he said. John gibbins,
- 22:47Speaker 1: he spoke to his bench coach who completely disagreed. And
- 22:51Speaker 1: Ghibbe certainly is coming from an old school cut of cloth,
- 22:54Speaker 1: who said that the bullpen usage was on point, and
- 22:57Speaker 1: if anything, he felt like there were times where they
- 22:58Speaker 1: were overprotecting the guy. In this article phrase Samon wrote.
- 23:04Speaker 1: By most measures, the Mets under Mendoz have no glaring
- 23:07Speaker 1: red flags for their reliever usage. Over the last two years,
- 23:09Speaker 1: New York ranks twenty first in relief appearances on consecutive days.
- 23:13Speaker 1: Of the fifty eight pitchers who have appeared in seventy
- 23:15Speaker 1: or more games in neither of the last two seasons,
- 23:17Speaker 1: just three of them were Mets, all trade deadline acquisitions
- 23:20Speaker 1: that were already on pace for that many games when acquired.
- 23:24Speaker 1: There's a ton of research in here that essentially shows
- 23:27Speaker 1: that the Mets are not really doing anything different from
- 23:31Speaker 1: any other ball club, and they're protecting pictures just as much.
- 23:34Speaker 1: Right so, we can look at a starting staff that
- 23:39Speaker 1: was a disaster for the most part this past season
- 23:42Speaker 1: and say, yeah, you're gonna need more bullpen help. But
- 23:45Speaker 1: do we really feel like we watched the Mets in
- 23:47Speaker 1: the past couple of years and think, ah, they're just
- 23:50Speaker 1: beating up their relievers.
- 23:54Speaker 2: No, I haven't. Honestly, I didn't watch them that much
- 23:57Speaker 2: during the year. I watched a little bit because my
- 24:00Speaker 2: son loves the Mets, so he'd put him on. But
- 24:03Speaker 2: you felt that one, man, Oh man, you felt that.
- 24:05Speaker 2: I love Adam. I I've gotten along with Adam. He's
- 24:08Speaker 2: a great picture out of you know, it's really good, dude.
- 24:11Speaker 2: Something was was hurting him there. Man, he's you know,
- 24:13Speaker 2: he's had enough, so something over there when he's with
- 24:15Speaker 2: the Mets, something bothered him, and this was this might
- 24:18Speaker 2: have been the icing on the cake of the whole thing.
- 24:20Speaker 2: Seeing all these injuries and him to be that passionate
- 24:23Speaker 2: about it and understandable as a player, it means that
- 24:26Speaker 2: much more. So there's more to it. There's gotta be.
- 24:31Speaker 2: There's always more to this story and to this thing.
- 24:33Speaker 2: You know, guys are injured, of course, but I would
- 24:36Speaker 2: love to talk to ad him about the whole situation
- 24:38Speaker 2: in scenario. Maybe maybe there's not Maybe it's just something
- 24:40Speaker 2: that he's very passionate about. And you know, the injuries.
- 24:44Speaker 2: It seems like there's a bunch of injuries every year,
- 24:46Speaker 2: but with the Mets, you know, what can happen will happen,
- 24:50Speaker 2: you know, and it's just uh, you know it was
- 24:54Speaker 2: it was that was hardcore right there.
- 24:56Speaker 3: Man.
- 24:57Speaker 2: You know, I like Adam for even stepping up and
- 24:59Speaker 2: saying something. You know, whether he's right or wrong, I
- 25:01Speaker 2: give him credit.
- 25:02Speaker 3: I mean, those are his boys.
- 25:04Speaker 4: Those are the guys he just played with, the guys
- 25:06Speaker 4: that you're sitting in the bullpen with because most of
- 25:08Speaker 4: them were bullpen I get at McGill with the starter,
- 25:11Speaker 4: but anytime I see bullpen issues with injuries over use
- 25:17Speaker 4: and you're like, oh, there could be some injuries. Like
- 25:20Speaker 4: I look at the Guardians and their bullpend. The guys
- 25:23Speaker 4: that are down.
- 25:23Speaker 3: There are getting crushed.
- 25:26Speaker 4: I don't really blame voter when you don't have anybody
- 25:30Speaker 4: going deep. I forget how many starts in a row.
- 25:33Speaker 4: I think it was over twenty five starts in a
- 25:34Speaker 4: row that nobody went more than five innings. Not talking
- 25:39Speaker 4: about nobody went more than six innings. You're talking about
- 25:43Speaker 4: every single night for twenty five straight games. You have
- 25:47Speaker 4: to pick up at least four innings at least, and
- 25:52Speaker 4: for Mendy to still keep those numbers below there, I
- 25:57Speaker 4: have a hard time getting in line with what Auto said. Now,
- 26:01Speaker 4: I didn't watch it as much except for the fact
- 26:04Speaker 4: that you just look at the numbers and you're like, hey,
- 26:06Speaker 4: these guys weren't overused. Now you're in the clubhouse. Auto
- 26:11Speaker 4: was in the clubhouse, and he's talked to some of
- 26:13Speaker 4: these guys. Maybe some of them were hanging. Maybe they
- 26:17Speaker 4: were kind of saying, hey, we need you out there,
- 26:20Speaker 4: we need you out there, we need you out there.
- 26:21Speaker 4: Maybe there was kind of a push in that sense.
- 26:23Speaker 4: So maybe there's some background or stuff in the background
- 26:27Speaker 4: that we don't know about.
- 26:29Speaker 3: But as far as.
- 26:30Speaker 4: Just a outing standpoint, and this made Tommy Johns seems
- 26:35Speaker 4: like a seems like a random year for or seems
- 26:37Speaker 4: like a regular year for the Rays. The Dodgers like
- 26:41Speaker 4: teams that are pushing guys to the limit with how
- 26:45Speaker 4: much they throw and how much and how much you know,
- 26:48Speaker 4: how hard they throw and the extreme velocities and spin
- 26:53Speaker 4: that they're putting on the ball.
- 26:55Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean, I do watch a ton of Mets games.
- 26:57Speaker 1: Most of my family they're massive Mets fans and again,
- 27:00Speaker 1: we're going back here, and I'm right in line. I mean,
- 27:03Speaker 1: I've been critical as hell of what David Stearns has
- 27:06Speaker 1: decided to do with his cherry picking and as AJ
- 27:10Speaker 1: calls it, playing in the kiddie pool for starting pitching
- 27:13Speaker 1: when the rest of your roster is beefed up and expensive,
- 27:16Speaker 1: it's just not going to work on a year to
- 27:17Speaker 1: year basis. You're gonna have some years like twenty four
- 27:19Speaker 1: where it hits. You're gonna have more years like twenty
- 27:22Speaker 1: five when Frankie Montas does not work out for you.
- 27:26Speaker 1: And Sean Manaia has had injury injuries in the past,
- 27:29Speaker 1: they popped up again for him. This year wasn't a
- 27:31Speaker 1: strong Senga's had a long list of injuries in the past.
- 27:33Speaker 1: That's why he was cheaper. He could pitch like a
- 27:35Speaker 1: one when he's healthy. So some of this was who
- 27:38Speaker 1: they were buying into. Often those pitchers that are cheaper
- 27:41Speaker 1: have a long injury background, right, that's a big thing,
- 27:45Speaker 1: that's Montas. There's so many more stats here, though, Guys.
- 27:49Speaker 1: Of the sixty two pitchers who have compiled at least
- 27:51Speaker 1: seventy innings in relief in either of the past two seasons.
- 27:54Speaker 1: Just one was a met Rogers deadline acquisition, right, He said,
- 27:58Speaker 1: this is Will Sammon's report. Three times in the last
- 28:01Speaker 1: two years as a Mets reliever appeared at least fourteen
- 28:03Speaker 1: times in the month. League average is six and a
- 28:06Speaker 1: half per team. Six times at Mets relievers throwing fifteen
- 28:09Speaker 1: or more innings in a month, just above the league
- 28:11Speaker 1: average of five point seven per team. So it's about average.
- 28:14Speaker 1: That's why you look at this team. The one thing
- 28:16Speaker 1: I looked at was, damn they have no starting pitching,
- 28:18Speaker 1: and I actually think they did an okay job of
- 28:21Speaker 1: trying to manage their bullpen that had to pick up
- 28:23Speaker 1: for the starting pitching all the time. The real story
- 28:26Speaker 1: of the Mets to Mekratz was you look at all
- 28:27Speaker 1: the young guys they called up early, and some of
- 28:29Speaker 1: them were great, like McLean, but you didn't expect any
- 28:32Speaker 1: of them to get called up. But their starting staff
- 28:34Speaker 1: fell apart. So I just don't see it. This is
- 28:36Speaker 1: where you have to just go back and forth with
- 28:38Speaker 1: Auto and get the specifics. Last thing I will say,
- 28:41Speaker 1: if a guy is hanging and to describe that to
- 28:43Speaker 1: our fans, like they're not feeling good enough to pitch
- 28:45Speaker 1: that day, they need to talk to the medical staff
- 28:47Speaker 1: where the medical staff addresses that, and then they need
- 28:50Speaker 1: to go on the il.
- 28:52Speaker 4: YEP and players always want to play through things. I sure,
- 28:56Speaker 4: because I have a good connection with Mendy. I have
- 29:00Speaker 4: a hard time believing and watching the games, have a
- 29:02Speaker 4: hard time believing that they push these guys too hard,
- 29:04Speaker 4: because he really, really deeply cares about the players, and
- 29:09Speaker 4: knowing David Stearns, I have a hard time believing that
- 29:14Speaker 4: he would he would like send down some kind of
- 29:17Speaker 4: edict and say, wow, we got these guys like you
- 29:20Speaker 4: have to put up No, they understand. They both understand
- 29:24Speaker 4: trying to keep players healthy. And I would say the
- 29:27Speaker 4: Mets are not an organization that sits there and goes
- 29:30Speaker 4: we don't care if they get hurt, Because there are
- 29:33Speaker 4: definitely some organizations where I would disagree with that statement.
- 29:36Speaker 4: I think they are fine with it because they have
- 29:38Speaker 4: a whole cavalcade of more guys running into the bullpen
- 29:42Speaker 4: like we're starting to get into the era in some
- 29:45Speaker 4: organizations where it really is a bullpen like it really is,
- 29:48Speaker 4: we'll just get more cattle. As soon as those cattle
- 29:51Speaker 4: are done, we move them out.
- 29:52Speaker 3: And move the.
- 29:53Speaker 4: Next cattle in. And that's how that's how teams run.
- 29:56Speaker 4: You know, a cheaper bullpen.
- 29:58Speaker 1: Yeah, the Raising Guardians have been that for years and
- 30:00Speaker 1: they've had some of the better bullpens. They will use
- 30:02Speaker 1: them to death and then you'll never hear from them again.
- 30:05Speaker 1: It's just how it works. I'm singling out two teams.
- 30:07Speaker 1: There are many others. Anyway. Auto pitched sixty plus appearances
- 30:10Speaker 1: for the Mets a couple of years ago. You would
- 30:12Speaker 1: think he knows better than we do. So there's a
- 30:14Speaker 1: side to it that I would love to bring him
- 30:15Speaker 1: on to ask about. And I'm sure we'll get him
- 30:17Speaker 1: again at some point this offseason to talk about it. Hey,
- 30:20Speaker 1: there's been a lot of retweets for the rays On
- 30:24Speaker 1: Socials today because they're putting the old crappy park back together.
- 30:31Speaker 1: But in all seriousness, a ton of respect and credit. Yeah,
- 30:36Speaker 1: look at that Todd father to the hard workers who
- 30:38Speaker 1: also are putting their lives on the line to try
- 30:40Speaker 1: and put that paper mache roof back together. It is
- 30:43Speaker 1: not easy. That things only going to hopefully have to
- 30:46Speaker 1: be up for a few more years and they'll smash
- 30:47Speaker 1: it in Avenue Park. But it was just a panel
- 30:50Speaker 1: by panel. Thank you to everyone who worked to put
- 30:53Speaker 1: that trot back together. I disagree that they should have
- 30:56Speaker 1: just had it smashed and have a park already, but
- 30:58Speaker 1: it is what it is. Good work because that place
- 31:01Speaker 1: is a dump. But good work that they put it
- 31:03Speaker 1: back together for now.
- 31:06Speaker 2: Very good, very good. Ah Man, I get I get
- 31:09Speaker 2: the shivers just looking at those people that high.
- 31:13Speaker 1: Man.
- 31:13Speaker 2: I'm not necessarily afraid of heights, but I don't like them,
- 31:16Speaker 2: you know. But it's uh. I could see Cratzy up
- 31:19Speaker 2: there for sure.
- 31:20Speaker 3: Man.
- 31:20Speaker 2: If if his wife he said, hey, you're gonna have
- 31:22Speaker 2: to go to Tampa and fix this, He's going to
- 31:25Speaker 2: do it. But I'll tell my wife, listen, you do
- 31:27Speaker 2: what you want. I'm not doing that. I'm sorry.
- 31:31Speaker 3: You say whatever you'd say yes to whatever she says.
- 31:33Speaker 3: So I get it.
- 31:35Speaker 4: Some people don't like heights, you know. I don't like
- 31:39Speaker 4: I don't like white roofs with a white baseball. Like,
- 31:43Speaker 4: could we have gotten a panel, I know it's only
- 31:45Speaker 4: a few years that this is gonna happen, or even
- 31:47Speaker 4: like every other panel, like a black panel or something.
- 31:50Speaker 4: Maybe they maybe, I don't know, maybe they fixed this issue.
- 31:54Speaker 4: But man, Kevin Kiermeier sitting out there, going.
- 31:59Speaker 3: Where's of all? Well?
- 32:00Speaker 4: I took my eye off it, Like, could we have
- 32:03Speaker 4: gotten some black or brown panels?
- 32:04Speaker 3: Please?
- 32:05Speaker 1: Guys? Do you think they don't do it? Is it
- 32:09Speaker 1: like a lighting thing?
- 32:09Speaker 3: Right? Like?
- 32:10Speaker 1: So if it was black?
- 32:11Speaker 3: Does that was?
- 32:14Speaker 4: It was supposed to be like a light What I
- 32:16Speaker 4: heard was supposed to be like a light slash like ambiance,
- 32:20Speaker 4: So it doesn't feel like you're completely closed in in
- 32:23Speaker 4: an indoor stadium. They didn't like that feel. I'm like, yeah,
- 32:27Speaker 4: but there's flyballs in baseball. You got to catch them. Oh,
- 32:31Speaker 4: it's it's a grind. I you never take your eye
