- 0:00Speaker 1: Woo!
- 0:01Speaker 2: Stu Gatz.
- 0:01Speaker 1: Woo!
- 0:02Speaker 3: I got to be honest with you, Bruce, there's a
- 0:03Speaker 3: good chance I'd be high anyway.
- 0:05Speaker 4: Woo!
- 0:05Speaker 2: And I'm wondering how the football weekend was.
- 0:07Speaker 1: Were you able to watch it? Wow, what happened? Oh,
- 0:11Speaker 1: I'm tired of him. I'm serious. How about that? In company.
- 0:15Speaker 5: We are mother shuckers, baby.
- 0:17Speaker 6: Woo!
- 0:17Speaker 7: Bruce, does Faison Brandon's name sound like it's on backwards?
- 0:20Speaker 1: No doubt.
- 0:21Speaker 7: It's time to get your.
- 0:23Speaker 7: It's time to get your financials. To get the all boat.
- 0:27Speaker 1: You got nothing right there.
- 0:29Speaker 2: This is not going well. This is Stu Gotts and Company.
- 0:34Speaker 1: Stu, back to you.
- 0:35Speaker 3: So listen, when big news breaks, you guys know us.
- 0:38Speaker 3: We have boots on the ground, especially in Chicago. I
- 0:41Speaker 3: have spent a good amount of time here, and we
- 0:43Speaker 3: have breaking news out of Chicago. So Taylor sent me
- 0:46Speaker 3: on an airplane, called T-Bob, said get him set up
- 0:50Speaker 3: at Barstool.
- 0:50Speaker 4: Yep.
- 0:51Speaker 3: So we could break down the Simmons trade to the Bears.
- 0:54Speaker 3: I walked into Barstool, and the entire floor here was
- 0:59Speaker 3: arguing about whether or not it was a good trade, D-Bob.
- 1:01Speaker 1: It was funny.
- 1:02Speaker 6: Yeah, it was kind of crazy, because the initial reaction
- 1:08Speaker 6: to the Bears fans I saw here was over-the-moon fantastic fist-pumping,
- 1:13Speaker 6: but we all know this works. Opinions are not universal.
- 1:18Speaker 6: And so when the larger Bayer collective here in office gathered,
- 1:22Speaker 6: we had a true civil war on our hands on
- 1:26Speaker 6: the second floor. Though I got to give it to
- 1:27Speaker 6: our guy, young Maserati Mike, who was the naysayer, made
- 1:32Speaker 6: a pretty good point, Stu. He said for that price,
- 1:35Speaker 6: two firsts and a fourth, you can get anybody in
- 1:38Speaker 6: the NFL.
- 1:39Speaker 3: All right, so let's ask Taylor and Mikey this because
- 1:41Speaker 3: they were having the same discussion that was happening with me.
- 1:45Speaker 1: Taylor, and Mikey.
- 1:46Speaker 3: Do you guys feel, because some of the guys are
- 1:48Speaker 3: saying it feels like a sauce gardener trade, that the
- 1:51Speaker 3: Bears don't need to make this trade. They're giving up
- 1:53Speaker 3: too much to get a guy. If you're giving up
- 1:56Speaker 3: two firsts and a fourth, you should be able to
- 1:59Speaker 3: get anyone you want in the NFL. And so I'll
- 2:02Speaker 3: start with Mikey. I ask you, do you think that's
- 2:05Speaker 3: the case? Two first and a fourth. Do you like
- 2:08Speaker 3: the trade, number one? And do you think two first
- 2:10Speaker 3: and a fourth could get you something better than Simmons?
- 2:13Speaker 5: I love the trade for both sides because the Bears
- 2:16Speaker 5: are in win-now mode. The Titans are nowhere near winning now.
- 2:20Speaker 5: And I would much rather the sure thing of what
- 2:25Speaker 5: Jeffrey Simmons is versus the unknown of what you're going
- 2:28Speaker 5: to get at, say, pick 28. That being said, it
- 2:33Speaker 5: is a lot to give up if you consider that
- 2:34Speaker 5: Micah Parsons went for essentially the same thing. And we
- 2:38Speaker 5: all probably believe Micah Parsons is probably a better player
- 2:41Speaker 5: than Jeffrey Simmons, or at least a more impactful player
- 2:44Speaker 5: than Jeffrey Simmons.
- 2:45Speaker 1: Right.
- 2:46Speaker 3: Well, not as available as a player, though. That's the
- 2:48Speaker 3: key with Micah Parsons.
- 2:50Speaker 1: He's hurt. But I understand your larger point. Yes.
- 2:52Speaker 7: My biggest point that I'm taking away from this is
- 2:54Speaker 7: I'm jealous that you guys got some water cooler talk today,
- 2:57Speaker 7: but I love this trade. I love this trade for
- 3:00Speaker 7: Chicago because, T-Bob, I thought that Dennis Allen was already
- 3:03Speaker 7: getting more out of the defense than anybody expected in Chicago,
- 3:07Speaker 7: and when you look at this Bears team, they are
- 3:09Speaker 7: not operating in this five-year window to win a championship.
- 3:13Speaker 7: The Bears have the biggest competitive advantage in football. Caleb
- 3:17Speaker 7: Williams on his rookie contract.
- 3:19Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 3:20Speaker 6: Caleb Williams on his rookie contract, and And granted, I
- 3:23Speaker 6: think we went through a phase where, in roster theory,
- 3:27Speaker 6: people were kind of getting to, like, that's the only
- 3:29Speaker 6: way you can win a championship. That's not true. We
- 3:31Speaker 6: know you can win once you've paid your quarterback. But
- 3:33Speaker 6: to your point, there is no better time than when
- 3:36Speaker 6: you can build a roster around a guy. And when
- 3:38Speaker 6: you're talking about Caleb Williams, he has been, like, what
- 3:43Speaker 6: I love so much about Williams on this year is,
- 3:45Speaker 6: entering the offseason, you had one goal for Caleb Williams.
- 3:48Speaker 6: Can you do the fundamentals?
- 3:50Speaker 4: Right.
- 3:50Speaker 6: Can you make the easy throws?
- 3:51Speaker 1: Yep.
- 3:52Speaker 6: Can you build that completion percentage? Well, right now, he
- 3:54Speaker 6: leads the NFL in QBR.
- 3:56Speaker 1: Right.
- 3:56Speaker 6: So, like, he passed that test flying colors. I'm all
- 3:58Speaker 6: in on going all in on Caleb Williams. And when
- 4:02Speaker 6: you look at the Dennis Allen defense, the numbers are good, but.
- 4:07Speaker 6: The D-line was the biggest need for improvement, and part
- 4:11Speaker 6: of the reason why the numbers are good, guys, is
- 4:13Speaker 6: because of the offense.
- 4:14Speaker 1: Right.
- 4:14Speaker 6: Because the Bears control the ball more than anybody in
- 4:17Speaker 6: the NFL right now. So, yeah, I think this is a...
- 4:20Speaker 6: I'm with Mikey. I think this works for both sides.
- 4:23Speaker 1: Right.
- 4:23Speaker 6: And you want to talk about Sus Gardner... That's Chris
- 4:25Speaker 6: Ballard's Colts.
- 4:26Speaker 1: Yes.
- 4:27Speaker 6: And Chris Ballard's Colts proven over a decade to not
- 4:30Speaker 6: be very good at anything. Right.
- 4:31Speaker 1: The problem is if it works for both sides, no
- 4:33Speaker 1: one won the trade.
- 4:34Speaker 7: I can't believe you guys are taking the side of
- 4:38Speaker 7: both teams won the trade today.
- 4:40Speaker 3: No, I am not taking that side. I actually think.
- 4:44Speaker 3: They're in win-now mode, but they're going to be in
- 4:46Speaker 3: win-now mode for.
- 4:47Speaker 1: As long as they have Caleb Williams.
- 4:49Speaker 3: I mean, so I don't know if building around him
- 4:51Speaker 3: with Simmons is the way to go as opposed to
- 4:54Speaker 3: building around him with first-round picks.
- 4:57Speaker 6: But name a better interior defensive tackle. And if you
- 5:00Speaker 6: believe you're going to be picking at the end of
- 5:01Speaker 6: round one, even for two years, I don't think you
- 5:04Speaker 6: can get two players that equal one Jeffrey Simmons on
- 5:06Speaker 6: the interior, arguably.
- 5:07Speaker 1: Right.
- 5:08Speaker 3: I guess that's a fair point. But would you rather
- 5:11Speaker 3: surround Caleb Williams?
- 5:13Speaker 6: I guess.
- 5:14Speaker 3: Man, he's so good. It doesn't really matter who the
- 5:17Speaker 3: wide receivers are. I'm not even certain it matters who
- 5:19Speaker 3: the running back is. I'm saying, like, Luther Bird's been
- 5:21Speaker 3: great this year. So you're saying as long as you
- 5:23Speaker 3: have Caleb build a world-class defense to go along with
- 5:27Speaker 3: Caleb Williams, because as long as he's there, the offense
- 5:29Speaker 3: is going to be good regardless, right?
- 5:30Speaker 6: Well, and the offense is all, I mean, especially with
- 5:32Speaker 6: Ben Johnson, too. But the offense has already got all
- 5:34Speaker 6: the pieces.
- 5:35Speaker 1: Yes.
- 5:36Speaker 6: They're very tight and heavy. They've got a great tight
- 5:38Speaker 6: end room. The offensive line has been fantastic. There was
- 5:41Speaker 6: worries over center coming in. That hasn't come to fruition. Um, they,
- 5:45Speaker 6: they run the ball better than anybody in the entire NFL.
- 5:47Speaker 6: The one weakness was the defense. And, and I don't know,
- 5:50Speaker 6: like interior defensive linemen of Simmons caliber just do not exist.
- 5:57Speaker 1: Right.
- 5:57Speaker 6: And they do not become available. And you have a 0%
- 6:00Speaker 6: chance or, you know, a 1% chance of getting one
- 6:04Speaker 6: of those guys at the back of the first round,
- 6:05Speaker 6: which is where Chicago should be expected to be picket.
- 6:08Speaker 6: And so for the Titans here, yeah, it's not bad
- 6:11Speaker 6: for them because it's the single greatest asset they have
- 6:13Speaker 6: to move on from and for what they need, right?
- 6:16Speaker 6: The Bears have the skeleton. They have the structure. They
- 6:20Speaker 6: need the sexy pieces to finish, like the nipples or
- 6:26Speaker 6: some cut biceps.
- 6:28Speaker 1: The areolas. Yes, the areolas.
- 6:31Speaker 6: They need a tight, tiny, beautiful areola. The Titans, on
- 6:35Speaker 6: the other hand, they need a femur.
- 6:38Speaker 1: Yes.
- 6:38Speaker 6: They need a pelvis. They need the structure of the team.
- 6:42Speaker 6: And these later first round picks are going to be
- 6:45Speaker 6: critical to them to try to build out that team
- 6:47Speaker 6: as a whole over the next couple of years.
- 6:50Speaker 5: I love the idea when a coach who is so
- 6:54Speaker 5: excellent on one side of the ball says, I will
- 6:57Speaker 5: make whatever you give me on this side of.
- 6:59Speaker 1: The ball work.
- 7:00Speaker 5: Like Ben Johnson is doing with the offense. Let's load
- 7:03Speaker 5: up the other side with talent so that takes over.
- 7:06Speaker 5: But T-Bob, you know what you're looking at a lot
- 7:08Speaker 5: more than we do. So my question to you is,
- 7:11Speaker 5: how many interior defensive linemen are better than Jeffrey Simmons
- 7:15Speaker 5: where you go, yeah, you might have been able to
- 7:18Speaker 5: get that guy?
- 7:20Speaker 6: I mean, that's what I'm trying to think about. Chris Jones?
- 7:27Speaker 6: Chris Jones is in the conversation.
- 7:30Speaker 1: Quinton Williams?
- 7:32Speaker 6: Quinton Williams, maybe like Dexter Lawrence.
- 7:35Speaker 3: I mean, but Dexter Lawrence is paying dividends for the
- 7:37Speaker 3: Bengals already. It's the same scenario.
- 7:41Speaker 6: Well, the thing is, when you are on the interior D-line,
- 7:44Speaker 6: you're not going to put up the numbers that a
- 7:49Speaker 6: great edge rusher does, but you arguably have more utility.
- 7:54Speaker 6: And I say arguably because edge rushers affect the quarterbacks
- 7:56Speaker 6: and The ripple effects there can be massive. But an
- 8:00Speaker 6: interior guy, you're not just getting in for the pass rush.
- 8:03Speaker 6: Look at the huge impact that he has. First, it's
- 8:05Speaker 6: going to help you run defense. And make no mistake,
- 8:08Speaker 6: this is a year in the NFL defined by running
- 8:12Speaker 6: the ball.
- 8:12Speaker 1: Yes.
- 8:13Speaker 6: All these successful teams are able to. The bad ones
- 8:16Speaker 6: are unable to. It's the fatal flaw of teams like
- 8:18Speaker 6: the Packers who, you know, they're doing their best, but
- 8:21Speaker 6: it's why they're handicapped. So he's going to help in
- 8:24Speaker 6: that regard. He's going to help out alone pass rushing,
- 8:27Speaker 6: but also when he pushes the interior of that pocket
- 8:31Speaker 6: back into the quarterback's face, that helps the edge rushers
- 8:34Speaker 6: get home. And then that helps coverage. So he's in
- 8:37Speaker 6: the center, and there's these radiating ripples all around Simmons
- 8:41Speaker 6: that could have huge effect.
- 8:43Speaker 7: And I think you could debate where Jeffrey Simmons is
- 8:46Speaker 7: in terms of interior defenders in the NFL, but those
- 8:50Speaker 7: guys aren't available, like Quinn and Williams, the Chris Joneses.
- 8:54Speaker 7: What you did in Chicago is add an all-pro talent,
- 8:57Speaker 7: and to T-Bob's point, Chicago's interior pressure rate, 9.5%. It's
- 9:03Speaker 7: tied for 30th right now in the NFL, and you're
- 9:05Speaker 7: looking at the NFC, the playoff pitcher, it feels like
- 9:08Speaker 7: an arms race right now where Quentin Nelson's going to Seattle,
- 9:11Speaker 7: DeForest Buckner's going back to San Francisco. Chicago has to
- 9:15Speaker 7: make moves to keep up with teams.
- 9:18Speaker 6: Yeah, I was just going to say, too, when you
- 9:20Speaker 6: think about, okay, is there somebody better or worse, I
- 9:23Speaker 6: like to not think of guys like he's definitely number one,
- 9:25Speaker 6: he's definitely number two. A lot of times these things
- 9:27Speaker 6: exist in tiers, right? And there's probably like four guys
- 9:31Speaker 6: in tier one. Yes, but Simmons is in the available tier.
- 9:34Speaker 1: Yeah, true.
- 9:35Speaker 2: Also true.
- 9:37Speaker 3: I mean, I like what Mikey said because there is
- 9:40Speaker 3: a confidence about Ben Johnson. He has the one thing
- 9:43Speaker 3: he needs on offense. He has the quarterback. All the
- 9:47Speaker 3: other pieces to Ben Johnson, I believe, are, for the
- 9:50Speaker 3: most part, interchangeable.
- 9:52Speaker 1: Go build a great defense.
- 9:54Speaker 3: He's like, I got the guy on offense. You could
- 9:57Speaker 3: surround him with anyone. I'll call the plays. Go build
- 10:00Speaker 3: a defense that's going to help us win a championship.
- 10:03Speaker 3: I think that's the best thing that's been said here.
- 10:04Speaker 3: I agree with Mikey A on that. I went into
- 10:06Speaker 3: it thinking just based on the reaction outside here that
- 10:09Speaker 3: it was a bad trade for the Bears, but now
- 10:11Speaker 3: Mikey A has talked me and T-Bob has talked me
- 10:14Speaker 3: into this being.
- 10:15Speaker 1: A great trade for the Chicago Bears. How about that?
- 10:18Speaker 1: Boots on the ground. Boots on the ground.
- 10:21Speaker 6: The other thing I would say here is a lot
- 10:24Speaker 6: of the conversation we're having is kind of making it
- 10:27Speaker 6: sound like the Bears are paupers offensively, but that's not
- 10:29Speaker 6: the case. Mnangai and Swift have been fantastic. Rochon's had
- 10:34Speaker 6: success as well, but that offensive line's been great this year.
- 10:38Speaker 6: Jonah Jackson and Darnell Wright, when they have to run
- 10:40Speaker 6: behind the right side of the line, they are dominant.
- 10:43Speaker 6: You got Thune at left guard. Luther Burns emerges a
- 10:46Speaker 6: true wide receiver one. You probably want more out of Odunze,
- 10:49Speaker 6: but if he's your number two, you don't mind that
- 10:51Speaker 6: because you lean on your tight end so much.
- 10:53Speaker 1: Yes.
- 10:54Speaker 6: And Colston Loveland's great. So yeah, I think this is...
- 10:58Speaker 6: I think they're set offensively. They're not just set because
- 11:02Speaker 6: Ben Johnson's an offensive genius and Caleb Williams could have success,
- 11:04Speaker 6: but I think they also have good personnel.
- 11:07Speaker 1: Yes.
- 11:08Speaker 6: Their main weakness was defensive line.
- 11:10Speaker 1: Right.
- 11:11Speaker 6: Now nobody can accuse them of not trying to shore
- 11:16Speaker 6: up the worst part of their roster.
- 11:18Speaker 3: I don't even think Bears fans are in a mode
- 11:20Speaker 3: where they're going to accuse him or accuse them of
- 11:22Speaker 3: doing anything. I just think it's worth the– I don't
- 11:25Speaker 3: want to call it a flyer. It's two first-round picks.
- 11:28Speaker 3: But it's worth taking a shot at a guy who's
- 11:30Speaker 3: already established, who's already great, and who someone deems is
- 11:34Speaker 3: worth two first-round picks in the NFL. If they get
- 11:37Speaker 3: it wrong, they get it wrong. Meaning, the Bears don't
- 11:39Speaker 3: have to go show, hey, we're going for it right now.
- 11:42Speaker 3: I think everyone knows they're going for it right now.
- 11:45Speaker 3: This is just another signal that they're going for it
- 11:47Speaker 3: right now.
- 11:48Speaker 6: Also, let's be clear, because the thing that's going to
- 11:50Speaker 6: constantly be compared to is Sauce Gardner and the Colts.
- 11:53Speaker 1: Yes.
- 11:55Speaker 6: The Colts did not fail... Because of the Sauce Gardner trade.
- 11:59Speaker 1: Right.
- 12:00Speaker 6: The trade just happened on a team that was already
- 12:03Speaker 6: arguably flawed playing way over their skis.
- 12:07Speaker 1: Right.
- 12:07Speaker 6: When you look at the Daniel Jones start last year,
- 12:09Speaker 6: any Jones gets hurt. So what you have to ask
- 12:11Speaker 6: yourself is, do you believe in the Bears?
- 12:13Speaker 1: Right.
- 12:14Speaker 6: And if you believe that the Bears are sustainably good
- 12:16Speaker 6: and not just on a hot run like the Colts were,
- 12:19Speaker 6: then this trade makes sense.
- 12:20Speaker 3: I think it's, do you believe in Caleb Williams? Do
- 12:22Speaker 3: you believe in Ben Johnson? Do you believe Caleb is
- 12:24Speaker 3: going to stay healthy? Because if you're the Colts, you
- 12:28Speaker 3: made that trade. And it's why Chris Ballard is fired
- 12:31Speaker 3: right now. You believed in Daniel Jones when you made
- 12:34Speaker 3: that trade. Believing in Caleb Williams as opposed to Daniel
- 12:38Speaker 3: Jones is a pretty big difference, right?
- 12:40Speaker 6: And it sucks because anybody who's listened to me, I
- 12:45Speaker 6: was cheering on Indiana Jones or Indianapolis Jones. I was
- 12:49Speaker 6: wearing this sweatshirt we made all the time. I always
- 12:52Speaker 6: like to give a guy credit.
- 12:54Speaker 2: Right.
- 12:54Speaker 1: Right.
- 12:54Speaker 4: Right.
- 13:14Speaker 6: I believe in this Bears team being sustainably good. Look
- 13:17Speaker 6: what they did without Caleb Williams when he got hurt
- 13:19Speaker 6: this year. And so to compare this to the Colts
- 13:22Speaker 6: does not, upon further investigation and inspection, make that much sense.
- 13:27Speaker 3: I have a perfect guy to ask about this trade
- 13:29Speaker 3: and everything else going on in the NFL if you're interested,
- 13:31Speaker 3: if you want to stick around with us.
- 13:32Speaker 1: Yeah, who are we talking about? It would be Chris Sims.
- 13:34Speaker 6: Let's go.
- 13:36Speaker 3: Chris Sims is going to join us coming up here
- 13:39Speaker 3: in just a minute.
- 13:51Speaker 1: Worlds are colliding here. I'm in Chicago. I'm with T-Bob
- 13:54Speaker 1: at Barstool. Taylor's back in Florida. Mikey's in Connecticut. Chris
- 13:58Speaker 1: Simmons is at NBC. We're all over the place, but
- 14:01Speaker 1: I had to.
- 14:01Speaker 3: Get boots on the ground for the Simmons trade, so
- 14:03Speaker 3: I flew to Chicago this morning to investigate what the
- 14:06Speaker 3: hell is going on. Before we got started, what were
- 14:09Speaker 3: you and Sims fighting about? I mean, you just met
- 14:11Speaker 3: the guy. You're fighting with Chris Sims.
- 14:13Speaker 6: I know, I know, I know. I was having some
- 14:15Speaker 6: ancient college memories. One of my buddies was a quarterback, Insminger,
- 14:19Speaker 6: and he got beat out by Matt Sims at a
- 14:22Speaker 6: quarterback camp.
- 14:23Speaker 1: Right.
- 14:23Speaker 6: And we would get drunk, and throughout all college, we'd
- 14:25Speaker 6: randomly just yell at each other, fuck Matt Sims. I
- 14:28Speaker 6: don't mean fuck Chris Sims. But I started the story
- 14:31Speaker 6: like it was Chris Sims, so I was going to
- 14:32Speaker 6: tell it like it was Chris Sims.
- 14:33Speaker 1: I do. I mean that story. Come on, man. You
- 14:36Speaker 1: know that.
- 14:36Speaker 2: Not all white people look alike.
- 14:38Speaker 1: Come on.
- 14:38Speaker 2: Come on. Try to get it straight here.
- 14:40Speaker 6: Me and Chris are brethren here. Again, this is kind
- 14:43Speaker 6: of like the Golic. I'm like a Costco or like
- 14:46Speaker 6: a great value version, right? Like, of course, Phil, Bobby Hebert.
- 14:51Speaker 6: T-Bob Hebert, Phil Simms, Chris Simms. I didn't make the NFL. Chris,
- 14:55Speaker 6: you know, I'm just a little– I'm like the dollar
- 14:57Speaker 6: store version here.
- 15:00Speaker 1: Put it on the wall.
- 15:01Speaker 3: Is T-Bob the dollar store version of Chris Simms? Chris,
- 15:06Speaker 3: let's start with the Simmons trade to the Bears. Two
- 15:10Speaker 3: first-round picks, a fourth-round pick, and there is debate as
- 15:14Speaker 3: to whether or not this is a good trade for Chicago.
- 15:16Speaker 1: What do you think?
- 15:17Speaker 4: I don't think there's any debate that it is a
- 15:19Speaker 4: good trade for Chicago. The time is now. I mean,
- 15:23Speaker 4: they're in the Super Bowl window. Their offense needs nothing, right?
- 15:27Speaker 4: It's perfectly built. The defense is real good defense. that
- 15:31Speaker 4: was missing a superstar that could do some crazy stuff
- 15:34Speaker 4: and some big moments. Dennis Allen is a defensive genius,
- 15:38Speaker 4: just like Ben Johnson, offensive genius. So no, I'm all
- 15:41Speaker 4: for it. They're not going to find anybody in the
- 15:43Speaker 4: first round next year as good as Jeffrey Simmons.
- 15:45Speaker 2: That's okay. And they won't the day you're after that.
- 15:48Speaker 4: So defensive line's been a little bit of an issue
- 15:50Speaker 4: for them, especially the defensive tackle play. Now you put
- 15:54Speaker 4: him in there, and, you know, Montez Sweat is back
- 15:57Speaker 4: from suspension. The other kid, Austin Booker, off the edge,
- 16:00Speaker 4: is starting to emerge as a pretty damn good player.
- 16:03Speaker 4: And then with that coaching, no, I love it. Like,
- 16:05Speaker 4: Jeffrey Simmons is a guy, Stu Gotts, where he's a
- 16:09Speaker 4: Hall of Famer. He just needs to be on a
- 16:11Speaker 4: defense that's a little bit, like, on some standalone gains
- 16:14Speaker 4: and some notoriety to where people realize, like, oh like
- 16:17Speaker 4: no doubt the best defense to tackle in football that's
- 16:20Speaker 4: not a discussion right now with jeffrey simmons.
- 16:23Speaker 6: And so chris that's what i kind of wanted to
- 16:25Speaker 6: get you to weigh in on from the quarterback perspective
- 16:27Speaker 6: here uh because there are some positions where it's very
- 16:30Speaker 6: easy to discern the impact that the player is having
- 16:34Speaker 6: and jeffrey simmons is good enough where like he's gonna
- 16:35Speaker 6: have those moments no doubt where he's gonna make the
- 16:37Speaker 6: sack he'll make the play but but talk to me
- 16:40Speaker 6: about some of the the ripple effects that bringing a
- 16:42Speaker 6: Jeffrey Simmons into the interior of your defense has.
- 16:46Speaker 4: That's, I think, why they make the move. One, like
- 16:49Speaker 4: Jeffrey Simmons is the rare guy that can shoot gaps
- 16:52Speaker 4: and just like, I'm going to beat you with my
- 16:54Speaker 4: quickness and my explosiveness and just create chaos. So you
- 16:58Speaker 4: can do that and go, oh, that's awesome if we
- 16:59Speaker 4: want to play that kind of defense. He's the rare breed, though,
- 17:03Speaker 4: of a guy that also can go, no, no, I
- 17:06Speaker 4: can just hold you up and kind of two-gap you
- 17:08Speaker 4: and read which way the ball's going and then get
- 17:11Speaker 4: rid of you and do that.
- 17:12Speaker 2: So he's very odd that way.
- 17:13Speaker 4: And for an athletic defensive tackle who's not, you know,
- 17:16Speaker 4: 335 pounds or whatever else, he takes on double teams
- 17:21Speaker 4: pretty damn good, too. And that's where Chicago hasn't had
- 17:24Speaker 4: that kind of guy. And I think, too, what Chicago's
- 17:27Speaker 4: looking at more specifically to your point is, You know,
- 17:30Speaker 4: they got a good defense. I've questioned how good the
- 17:33Speaker 4: talent of the defense is.
- 17:35Speaker 2: And, like, week by week, I've been like, hey, they're
- 17:37Speaker 2: a little better than I thought, a little better than
- 17:38Speaker 2: I thought.
- 17:39Speaker 4: The New England game, they were phenomenal because I think
- 17:41Speaker 4: that's a pretty good New England offense. But what I
- 17:43Speaker 4: do think they realized, too, is– We can't play some
- 17:47Speaker 4: of these crazy aggressive defenses we do against some of
- 17:50Speaker 4: the high-functioning offenses of the NFL and think we're going
- 17:53Speaker 4: to get away with it every time we do it, right?
- 17:56Speaker 4: Whether that's Shanahan or McVay or one of those, Detroit,
- 18:02Speaker 4: even with that offense and what they do, if they
- 18:04Speaker 4: got to the Super Bowl and had to play Buffalo,
- 18:06Speaker 4: you don't want to have guys at the line of
- 18:08Speaker 4: scrimmage going, hey, we're going to take some chances on
- 18:10Speaker 4: the back end against these guys.
- 18:12Speaker 2: That'll come back to bite him in the ass.
- 18:13Speaker 4: And I think that's another reason why they make this
- 18:16Speaker 4: move for Jeffrey Simmons.
- 18:18Speaker 5: Jeffrey Simmons goes out of the AFC South, and he's
- 18:21Speaker 5: going to look across the line of scrimmage on Monday,
- 18:25Speaker 5: and he's going to see Quentin Nelson, who he just
- 18:27Speaker 5: left at the AFC South. How big is he to Seattle,
- 18:31Speaker 5: considering what they're trying to do getting that running game going?
- 18:33Speaker 4: Well, I think the three teams that made the move,
- 18:37Speaker 4: for my money, right, the Niners, the Seahawks, and the Bears,
- 18:40Speaker 4: are the three teams that are to me, the most
- 18:43Speaker 4: likely right now, as we said, to go to the
- 18:45Speaker 4: Super Bowl and the NFC. Those would be the three teams.
- 18:48Speaker 4: The Seahawks, I mean, the Seahawks are phenomenal. They have
- 18:52Speaker 4: one issue. They have DSD, okay? This has been a
- 18:55Speaker 4: theme on my show, right? They got it. They got DSD.
- 18:58Speaker 4: It's dumb shit disease, right? They had that for a while.
- 19:01Speaker 4: They're trying to get it out of their immune system.
- 19:03Speaker 4: They got a booster shot, right? They're trying to wash
- 19:05Speaker 4: their hands all the time. because they really were playing
- 19:09Speaker 4: the wrong way. I think I said this to you
- 19:11Speaker 4: guys a few weeks ago. At what point did we
- 19:14Speaker 4: think throwing the ball 40-something times a game with Sam
- 19:16Speaker 4: Darnold was going to be the way to win and like, yeah,
- 19:18Speaker 4: he'll carry the football team?
- 19:19Speaker 2: You don't want that.
- 19:21Speaker 4: They're a defensive team, a great defense that runs the ball,
- 19:25Speaker 4: and then Sam makes a throw to Jackson, Smith, and
- 19:27Speaker 4: Jigba every now and then for a big play, and
- 19:30Speaker 4: that's when they were at their best last year. So
- 19:32Speaker 4: I think that's what they're trying to do. You saw
- 19:35Speaker 4: that last week against the Chiefs and they ran the
- 19:38Speaker 4: ball well.
- 19:38Speaker 2: They're running back.
- 19:39Speaker 4: You're going to be back healthy here now with Charbonnet
- 19:41Speaker 4: and Jadarian Price.
- 19:42Speaker 2: And I think they're telling you.
- 19:44Speaker 4: And Mike McDonald last week was like, hey, we want
- 19:46Speaker 4: to simplify things, which was code word do. We're throwing
- 19:49Speaker 4: the ball and letting Sam Darnold do too much, right?
- 19:52Speaker 4: I mean, we still see. He didn't wash away DSD yet.
- 19:54Speaker 4: He threw the interception on the two-yard line, but I
- 19:57Speaker 4: think this is a clear sign, again, that they believe
- 20:00Speaker 4: they can still win the Super Bowl again and that
- 20:02Speaker 4: they can't play the way they were playing there, especially
- 20:05Speaker 4: in those few losses that we saw earlier in the year.
- 20:07Speaker 7: Sims, our show is trying to position ourselves as the
- 20:09Speaker 7: official Carolina Panthers show, and it feels like you've been
- 20:12Speaker 7: doing the opposite, calling them the wussy cats. Tonight, Thursday
- 20:16Speaker 7: Night Football.
- 20:17Speaker 1: Wussy, wussy, wussy, wussy, wussy, wussy cats. Wussy, wussy, wussy, wussy,
- 20:22Speaker 1: wussy cats.
- 20:23Speaker 6: This guy doesn't respect the NFC South.
- 20:26Speaker 1: Nor should he.
- 20:27Speaker 7: Sims, tonight, Thursday Night Football, it's two teams looking to
- 20:30Speaker 7: right the ship at Lambeau. Who needs this win more,
- 20:33Speaker 7: and who do you think gets it done?
- 20:35Speaker 4: Well, I'd be, I think Green Bay needs it more
- 20:37Speaker 4: because of the division they're in. Now, I mean, it's
- 20:39Speaker 4: desperate for both of them, but I mean, you know,
- 20:41Speaker 4: the NFC South right now, I mean, the two and
- 20:43Speaker 4: five bucks are still in it and you still look
- 20:45Speaker 4: at them and go, I don't know, maybe they're, maybe
- 20:47Speaker 4: they are the best team. I mean, so there's, there's
- 20:49Speaker 4: lots of wiggle room in the South. Now the Panthers
- 20:52Speaker 4: were pitiful last week. And that's why I'm getting on them.
- 20:56Speaker 4: And I just so everybody knows, yeah, they took shots
- 20:58Speaker 4: on me on social media because I picked the Eagles
- 21:01Speaker 4: the week before.
- 21:02Speaker 2: And then they wanted to.
- 21:03Speaker 4: Puff their chest out like we barely beat the Eagles
- 21:05Speaker 4: with a third string quarterback. So, yeah, I'm never going
- 21:08Speaker 4: to pick them. It's a good friendly banner. They steal
- 21:10Speaker 4: my spleen.
- 21:12Speaker 2: Screw you. I come after you. You pick against me
- 21:15Speaker 2: on social media?
- 21:16Speaker 6: Screw you.
- 21:17Speaker 4: I come after you. So that's how it works a
- 21:21Speaker 4: little bit. I'll never pick the Panthers ever again in
- 21:23Speaker 4: a football game.
- 21:23Speaker 2: That's done.
- 21:24Speaker 4: But, no, I do think it's the Packers. The Packers,
- 21:27Speaker 4: because of what we've talked about, Minnesota's damn good. Chicago's
- 21:31Speaker 4: damn good. Detroit's dangerous as hell. And if you lose
- 21:35Speaker 4: a few games in the NFC North, yeah, you could
- 21:37Speaker 4: be in fourth place as it is. So they need
- 21:39Speaker 4: to keep pace. That's why I would say it's a
- 21:41Speaker 4: little more important for them.
- 21:43Speaker 3: It is such a fair point by you. They took
- 21:44Speaker 3: your fucking spleen. You should have carte blanche for the
- 21:47Speaker 3: remainder of your life.
- 21:50Speaker 4: I've been critical of them, and I'm sure they haven't.
- 21:53Speaker 4: They did it to me last year, too. So this
- 21:55Speaker 4: isn't the first time. But, yeah, I'm going to lean
- 21:57Speaker 4: into it this time around.
- 22:00Speaker 3: So, Chris, the Texans are so interesting because last year
- 22:02Speaker 3: you told us about this world-class defense, and they were.
- 22:05Speaker 3: They were fantastic, and we thought it would carry over
- 22:07Speaker 3: to this year. But sometimes defense doesn't carry over. the
- 22:10Speaker 3: biggest question mark they had headed into the season was C.J.
- 22:14Speaker 1: Stroud. And C.J.
- 22:15Speaker 3: Stroud, if C.J. Stroud played like this last year, the
- 22:18Speaker 3: Texans would have won the Super Bowl. What is happening
- 22:21Speaker 3: in Houston with that defense?
- 22:23Speaker 1: A lot.
- 22:24Speaker 4: I mean, one, you know, I think the one thing
- 22:27Speaker 4: is they're a little small up front in the defensive
- 22:30Speaker 4: tackle position. So people have shown they can, you know,
- 22:32Speaker 4: push them and run on them a little bit to
- 22:34Speaker 4: where I think it's gotten them worried to where they
- 22:37Speaker 4: play maybe too aggressive run defense. The big thing, though,
- 22:41Speaker 4: is the explosive pass plays on the pass game. That's
- 22:44Speaker 4: really what I look at. For as talented as they are,
- 22:47Speaker 4: one thing I look at with them on film a
- 22:49Speaker 4: little bit is just to go, Like you said, last
- 22:52Speaker 4: year they could almost win games by themselves. You were
- 22:55Speaker 4: literally like, hey, offense, just stay over there and don't
- 22:57Speaker 4: screw the game up and the defense will get it done.
- 23:00Speaker 4: And we saw that. I do think there was a
- 23:02Speaker 4: little lack of creativity I've seen in some of their
- 23:07Speaker 4: games on the defensive side of the ball. And when
- 23:09Speaker 4: I say that, disguises, right? showing things too early, just
- 23:14Speaker 4: lining up in a defense, which sometimes teams can get
- 23:17Speaker 4: away with that. Seattle's like that. They kind of just go, hey,
- 23:19Speaker 4: we're going to line up in this, and yeah, this
- 23:21Speaker 4: is what we're playing, and screw you.
- 23:23Speaker 2: You're not going to be able to beat us.
- 23:24Speaker 4: The Texans have done that a little bit as well,
- 23:26Speaker 4: but teams have found ways to attack it. And then
- 23:29Speaker 4: the pass rush has not been as dominant as it
- 23:32Speaker 4: was last year. I mean, it's still really damn good,
- 23:35Speaker 4: don't get me wrong. But last year, it was like, hey,
- 23:37Speaker 4: their front four can get there on every play. This
- 23:40Speaker 4: year it's a little bit more spotty that way. And
- 23:43Speaker 4: so that's what's shocking. The biggest shock is just the
- 23:46Speaker 4: fact that the amount of explosive pass plays that have
- 23:49Speaker 4: happened against them. I just can't believe it. It's like
- 23:51Speaker 4: they kind of came into the year thinking they were
- 23:54Speaker 4: just going to get it done again no matter what.
- 23:57Speaker 6: Chris, are the undefeated Vikings the worst team in the
- 24:01Speaker 6: NFC North?
- 24:04Speaker 4: No, I'm not going to say that. I think that if,
- 24:08Speaker 4: you know, I would say that the Packers are the
- 24:11Speaker 4: worst team in the NFC North.
- 24:12Speaker 2: I would, you know, and so the undefeated.
- 24:15Speaker 6: Vikings are the third worst team or the third team.
- 24:17Speaker 4: Well, I still, I still would. The Lions defense is
- 24:21Speaker 4: so shitty. I don't, I'd probably still, I'd make them third.
- 24:24Speaker 4: I still think I'd pick the Vikings second. It's, I mean,
- 24:29Speaker 4: I know what you're saying.
- 24:31Speaker 2: It's ugly.
- 24:32Speaker 4: They're like the Denver Broncos almost of the AFC side
- 24:35Speaker 4: where you go and you go, what? They're 5-2? It
- 24:38Speaker 4: doesn't feel like they've played a real good, awesome, dominant
- 24:41Speaker 4: game yet. But I think that's the way it's going
- 24:43Speaker 4: to be this year for the Minnesota Vikings. That's why
- 24:46Speaker 4: I think, too, you're hearing them a little bit with
- 24:48Speaker 4: the trade chatter with maybe Jonathan Taylor. Because I think
- 24:50Speaker 4: they realize, like, hey, we are who we are at
- 24:52Speaker 4: this point. Our offense is obviously not going to come along.
- 24:56Speaker 4: Kyler Murray, third downs and obvious passing situations, it's spotty.
- 25:01Speaker 4: It's not ever consistently good. So they have issues there.
- 25:04Speaker 4: They have been able to run the ball a little bit.
- 25:06Speaker 4: And at least Kevin O'Connell has realized what they are,
- 25:09Speaker 4: which I give him a lot of credit because a
- 25:11Speaker 4: lot of offensive coaches don't do that.
- 25:12Speaker 2: They're stubborn and they just go, no.
- 25:14Speaker 4: I'm going to keep calling passes and doing this and
- 25:16Speaker 4: we're going to keep attacking. Almost like I was saying
- 25:18Speaker 4: with Seattle where I was like, why? I mean, just
- 25:21Speaker 4: win the games 20 to 13 and you'll be undefeated.
- 25:24Speaker 4: What are we trying to do? What are we trying
- 25:25Speaker 4: to prove? He's done a great job to realize where
- 25:28Speaker 4: they are. Hopefully that offense can get a little bit better,
- 25:31Speaker 4: but damn. I mean, Flores is just, he's Ben Johnson
- 25:35Speaker 4: or Shanahan on the defensive side of the ball.
- 25:37Speaker 2: He's just a genius. Every week he finds a way
- 25:39Speaker 2: to do it.
- 25:41Speaker 5: Chris, a theme on this show for years was us
- 25:43Speaker 5: asking you if Trevor Lawrence is any good. And I
- 25:46Speaker 5: think that Liam Cohen has kind of answered that question.
- 25:49Speaker 5: So now let me ask you this. Is Drake May
- 25:51Speaker 5: any good?
- 25:53Speaker 1: Yes, he is. You sure? No, I am sure.
- 25:56Speaker 2: Because you were sure about Trevor Lawrence and we weren't.
- 25:59Speaker 1: Yeah, but he was right.
- 26:02Speaker 2: And I was right.
- 26:04Speaker 4: Drake May is a guy you know that I didn't
- 26:06Speaker 4: love coming out in the draft. Because of like a
- 26:09Speaker 4: little of the things we saw again this year, they
- 26:11Speaker 4: pop up every now and then with Drake May with
- 26:13Speaker 4: some of the mechanical things without me getting into the
- 26:16Speaker 4: weeds and how he throws the football can lead to
- 26:18Speaker 4: some inconsistencies. But no, Drake May has got some elite abilities.
- 26:24Speaker 4: And as long as he just stays on some of
- 26:26Speaker 4: those mechanical flaws of throwing, like we've talked about in
- 26:29Speaker 4: the past.
- 26:30Speaker 2: I think he's phenomenal.
- 26:31Speaker 4: One, you know, it's hard to argue his running ability.
- 26:36Speaker 4: He's one of the greatest running runners in football. I mean,
- 26:39Speaker 4: that's without question what he can do there. And then,
- 26:42Speaker 4: you know, the other side of it is they can
- 26:44Speaker 4: protect and McDaniels can draw plays to throw the ball
- 26:47Speaker 4: down the field. And Drake May is a phenomenal deep
- 26:50Speaker 4: ball thrower. You know, you could argue they're the best
- 26:52Speaker 4: deep ball throwing team in the sport. Now, I'd like
- 26:54Speaker 4: still a little more consistency in the intermediate, the short
- 26:57Speaker 4: passing game, but yes, he is damn good.
- 27:01Speaker 2: Damn good. He's going to stay damn good.
- 27:03Speaker 4: He's tough.
- 27:03Speaker 2: I like him for that, too. But I don't think
- 27:08Speaker 2: he's Caleb Williams.
- 27:09Speaker 4: Again, I think Caleb Williams is the first guy to
- 27:12Speaker 4: be like, hey, Mount Rushmore, Burrow.
- 27:15Speaker 2: Lamar, Mahomes, right? Josh Allen, what do you need to
- 27:19Speaker 2: get off? It's me on there now.
- 27:21Speaker 4: I think that's where we're getting, and that's what's interesting
- 27:24Speaker 4: to me too.
- 27:26Speaker 3: PFT with Mike Florio every day on Peacock, the Unbuttoned
- 27:29Speaker 3: podcast as well. He's doing college football on Saturdays. NBC
- 27:32Speaker 3: is working him. They are working you six days a week,
- 27:36Speaker 3: seven days a week. But I want to ask you here,
- 27:39Speaker 3: we all know you're a big Giants fan. We all
- 27:41Speaker 3: know your dad played for the New York Giants. You
- 27:43Speaker 3: love the Giants. I want to come at this from
- 27:46Speaker 3: two angles. One, Joe Shane, he just saved the season
- 27:49Speaker 3: by giving up a fifth-round pick and getting them J.J.
- 27:51Speaker 3: McCarthy because Jameis Winston was no good in that offense.
- 27:54Speaker 3: So what do you make of the job Joe Shane
- 27:56Speaker 3: has done? And is J.J. McCarthy, does he have an
- 27:59Speaker 3: opportunity here to kind of turn his career around with
- 28:02Speaker 3: John Harbaugh as the head coach.
- 28:04Speaker 4: Well, I mean, I think Joe Shane was unfairly criticized
- 28:07Speaker 4: a little bit with that. And a lot of it,
- 28:10Speaker 4: I think, just dates back to Saquon Barkley and the
- 28:14Speaker 4: offseason hard knocks and the fact that they traded him.
- 28:16Speaker 4: And then the next year he ran for 2,000 yards.
- 28:19Speaker 4: He's made a lot of damn good picks. And he's
- 28:21Speaker 4: made a lot of good moves, that's for sure. Now,
- 28:23Speaker 4: I don't think J.J. McCarthy's his move, if you want
- 28:25Speaker 4: to be honest. I mean, yeah, J.J. McCarthy, who played
- 28:28Speaker 4: with Jim Harbaugh, and then John's Jim's brother, and they
- 28:32Speaker 4: need a quarterback, and John's running the organization, basically. No,
- 28:35Speaker 4: I think it was probably John that was the one
- 28:37Speaker 4: that really pulls the strings on that.
- 28:39Speaker 2: But regardless, it was a big-time move to make.
- 28:42Speaker 4: I think they realize, like, hey, Jameis, we might have
- 28:45Speaker 4: some fun games and all that, but damn, we're going
- 28:47Speaker 4: to probably lose a few games because he's just too loose.
- 28:49Speaker 2: With the ball, and it's just a roller coaster.
- 28:52Speaker 4: And I think they're looking at it going, and John
- 28:54Speaker 4: Harbaugh's going, wait, it's year one.
- 28:56Speaker 2: We got a chance here right now.
- 28:58Speaker 4: Like, I don't want to go down the, oh, man,
- 29:01Speaker 4: our quarterback got lost, and we didn't even make the playoffs.
- 29:04Speaker 4: He's going to try to put his best foot forward
- 29:06Speaker 4: in year one. And he got a quarterback I think
- 29:08Speaker 4: that's more similar to Jackson Dart than to kind of
- 29:11Speaker 4: run the same similar system.
- 29:13Speaker 2: And they're tough. That's the one thing. The Giants are physical.
- 29:16Speaker 2: They're tough.
- 29:17Speaker 4: And they are, another thing I've been saying is they
- 29:20Speaker 4: have no shrinkage on their team. Like when they are, oh,
- 29:24Speaker 4: you want to play Malik Nabors in his face? Well,
- 29:26Speaker 4: we'll throw it deep to him.
- 29:28Speaker 2: We don't care. Oh, you want to stop the quarterback sneak?
- 29:30Speaker 4: We'll trick play and Cam Scadaboo will run down the
- 29:33Speaker 4: sidelines for 30 yards. I mean, they go for it.
- 29:36Speaker 4: And McCarthy has been phenomenal so far. I mean, he
- 29:38Speaker 4: was amazing last week.
- 29:39Speaker 2: He really was.
- 29:40Speaker 4: So yeah the giants i mean they're in this to
- 29:42Speaker 4: stay they really are i don't think this is going
- 29:44Speaker 4: to fall apart i don't think they're perfect but can
- 29:47Speaker 4: they win the nfc east yes and would i be
- 29:50Speaker 4: i would think we're definitely in late december going to
- 29:52Speaker 4: be going hey the giants if they win one of
- 29:54Speaker 4: the last two or whatever they can get in the
- 29:56Speaker 4: nfc playoffs.
- 29:57Speaker 7: Sims, it feels like Seattle exposed something with Kansas City's offense.
- 30:01Speaker 7: If Kansas City is to become a legit Super Bowl contender,
- 30:05Speaker 7: they have to address that wide receiver room, right?
- 30:08Speaker 2: Totally, totally.
- 30:10Speaker 4: Mahomes is the greatest quarterback in the game with the
- 30:13Speaker 4: worst receiving core in the game out of those guys.
- 30:16Speaker 2: I mean, he's got nothing. What is there?
- 30:19Speaker 4: Travis Kelsey is a good player at this point, but
- 30:21Speaker 4: he's not the guy you feature your game plan around.
- 30:24Speaker 4: You're going to like, oh, he's going to take over
- 30:25Speaker 4: the game like the old days. Xavier Worthy is a
- 30:28Speaker 4: seven on seven receiver.
- 30:30Speaker 1: Come on.
- 30:30Speaker 4: Soon as the game gets tough and physical, it's just like,
- 30:32Speaker 4: where'd he go?
- 30:33Speaker 1: Huh?
- 30:33Speaker 2: Where is he?
- 30:34Speaker 4: So that's not going to work. They miss Rasheed Rice.
- 30:37Speaker 4: He's made for a game like the Seattle Seahawks. But yeah,
- 30:40Speaker 4: they need something else. Because I think what we all
- 30:43Speaker 4: saw is when they play a defense, and that might
- 30:46Speaker 4: happen again this week, with Denver, where they can go, no, no,
- 30:50Speaker 4: we can stop your run. Now we're putting the spotlight
- 30:52Speaker 4: on your pass game again. I don't know if their
- 30:55Speaker 4: pass game, one, is all that creative to where I
- 30:59Speaker 4: can go. It can just stand on itself by itself,
- 31:03Speaker 4: throwing the football. And then two, yeah, I question the
- 31:05Speaker 4: talent they have there. So, you know, they'd be a
- 31:08Speaker 4: team that I would go Calvin Ridley, Brian Thomas Jr.
- 31:11Speaker 4: You know, is there somebody out there that they might
- 31:13Speaker 4: look at to help that receiver room?
- 31:16Speaker 3: Chris, if you're running the Raiders right now, do you
- 31:18Speaker 3: stick with Kirk Cousins? Do you go to Mendoza?
- 31:21Speaker 4: I wouldn't have. I would have made the move. I mean,
- 31:24Speaker 4: you know, come on. We know where we're at. Respect
- 31:27Speaker 4: to the Raiders. Clint Kubiak's been phenomenal, right? And Kubiak's
- 31:31Speaker 4: been damn good. I mean, Cousins has been damn good, too.
- 31:35Speaker 4: It's not like an indictment on him.
- 31:36Speaker 1: He's been great.
- 31:37Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 31:37Speaker 4: To me, it's just more about like, hey, it's inevitable.
- 31:40Speaker 4: You're not going to the Super Bowl this year. And
- 31:42Speaker 4: I don't really think you're going to the playoffs either.
- 31:44Speaker 1: And it's 2026.
- 31:45Speaker 4: Jaden Daniels just went to the NFC Championship game as
- 31:49Speaker 4: a rookie. CJ Stroud was there as a rookie. We're
- 31:51Speaker 4: seeing rookie quarterbacks be successful every year. We're seeing guys
- 31:55Speaker 4: in the second year go to the Super Bowl and,
- 31:57Speaker 4: you know, be in the MVP conversation. If you wait
- 32:00Speaker 4: until next year to start Mendoza, none of that stuff
- 32:03Speaker 4: is going to happen. So that's where I just continue
- 32:06Speaker 4: to go get them in there. And they're a little
- 32:09Speaker 4: bit challenged as far as being able to get explosive
- 32:12Speaker 4: plays on the offensive side of the ball. Mendoza's big
- 32:15Speaker 4: right arm will help that out. But maybe they looked
- 32:18Speaker 4: at it, too, because they got the Jets this week,
- 32:20Speaker 4: and that's where I thought maybe they would do it.
- 32:22Speaker 4: But after that, they got the 49ers, the Seahawks, the Broncos,
- 32:25Speaker 4: and the Browns. Those are four of the better defenses
- 32:27Speaker 4: in football. So maybe they're waiting to get through that
- 32:29Speaker 4: stretch and then get to the bye week, and maybe
- 32:31Speaker 4: they'll let them finish the last five or six of
- 32:32Speaker 4: the year.
- 32:34Speaker 1: After the bye. Yeah, Chris, we'll get you out of
- 32:36Speaker 1: here in a minute.
- 32:37Speaker 3: Bo Nix, I know he was better last week, but
- 32:39Speaker 3: what are you seeing in terms of what he was
- 32:40Speaker 3: doing last year and what he is doing to start
- 32:44Speaker 3: the season this year?
- 32:45Speaker 1: What are the differences?
- 32:46Speaker 3: Why is he not as productive a quarterback as he
- 32:49Speaker 3: was last year?
- 32:50Speaker 4: Well, I think you can go a little both here
- 32:52Speaker 4: in that, I would tell you the first few weeks
- 32:56Speaker 4: when I watched film with them, I was kind of like, well,
- 32:59Speaker 4: what do you want them to do?
- 33:01Speaker 2: Like you tell me where to throw the ball. Nobody's
- 33:03Speaker 2: open the offense, the whole.
- 33:05Speaker 4: Thing with Sean Payton and should he play call, you know,
- 33:09Speaker 4: should he be the play car that that was a,
- 33:11Speaker 4: a talking point because people like me and everybody were
- 33:14Speaker 4: watching the film going, they don't really do anything on offense.
- 33:17Speaker 2: Like what, what are they trying to accomplish? What are they?
- 33:20Speaker 2: You know, there's no trickeration.
- 33:22Speaker 4: There's no creativity and pre-snap motions or formations or anything
- 33:27Speaker 4: that way. And so there was a little of that.
- 33:29Speaker 4: And then also there was just him being, like, off kilter.
- 33:32Speaker 4: The fact that he didn't have OTAs.
- 33:35Speaker 2: And he was– He missed a significant part of training camp.
- 33:38Speaker 4: I would tell you, like, what I thought was just, like,
- 33:41Speaker 4: the clock in his head was off when he was
- 33:42Speaker 4: dropping back in a clean pocket, right? And that's where, like,
- 33:47Speaker 4: the first game that jumped out to me, and I
- 33:49Speaker 4: even did some videos on it in my podcast, was
- 33:51Speaker 4: the 49er game. They lost 24-14, and I kind of
- 33:55Speaker 4: remember watching it on TV going, well, man, that was
- 33:57Speaker 4: another bad offensive coordinator day there. There was nothing open.
- 34:00Speaker 4: Then I watched the film on Monday, and I went,
- 34:02Speaker 4: holy shit, people are open everywhere.
- 34:05Speaker 2: What the hell is he doing?
- 34:06Speaker 4: He left like 170 yards and three touchdowns on the field.
- 34:10Speaker 2: And you're like, what? Nobody's near him, and he.
- 34:12Speaker 4: Was checking it down. You're like, there's Jalen Waddell for
- 34:15Speaker 4: 40 down the middle.
- 34:15Speaker 2: What are we doing?
- 34:17Speaker 4: So it's been a little bit of both. They have
- 34:18Speaker 4: played some good defenses today. But I think they're a team, again,
- 34:21Speaker 4: that we got to kind of just, they went ugly.
- 34:23Speaker 4: That's what they are.
- 34:24Speaker 2: They're tough.
- 34:25Speaker 4: They're going to be like a fourth quarter football team,
- 34:27Speaker 4: a little like they were last year too.
- 34:29Speaker 6: And I think they're just going to embrace that. Chris, okay,
- 34:33Speaker 6: I got two fair to says for you. Okay, first one,
- 34:36Speaker 6: SAT question. Pat McAfee is to the University of Utah
- 34:41Speaker 6: as Chris Sims is to the Carolina Panthers.
- 34:43Speaker 1: Can I say?
- 34:45Speaker 2: True.
- 34:46Speaker 1: Okay. That's fair. What about this?
- 34:48Speaker 4: Yes.
- 34:49Speaker 6: True.
- 34:49Speaker 1: No, no. Go ahead. Go ahead.
- 34:51Speaker 2: No, no. You're right. You're right. I think that's a
- 34:54Speaker 2: fair assessment there.
- 34:55Speaker 6: Definitely. Second fair to say. Fair to say, quarterback controversy.
- 35:01Speaker 6: Quarterback controversy in New York.
- 35:04Speaker 4: It has a chance to be like, so what you're
- 35:09Speaker 4: bringing up with Bobby, like I hear you here It
- 35:12Speaker 4: was one of the reasons I kind of, when he
- 35:14Speaker 4: was name was being brought up in trade talks, I
- 35:17Speaker 4: was a little like, Hey, I mean, if he does,
- 35:20Speaker 4: do you want to do that? If he does well
- 35:23Speaker 4: and they get to the playoffs or that you're going
- 35:25Speaker 4: to have like people next year going, Oh, who's the starter?
- 35:29Speaker 2: Oh, Jackson dart. He doesn't look totally himself.
- 35:32Speaker 4: Week one or two bench him, put JJ McCarthy in.
- 35:35Speaker 4: So yeah, they've opened up a can of worms that way,
- 35:37Speaker 4: but I think they're just going to deal with that
- 35:39Speaker 4: when the time comes. One, I think they can also
- 35:41Speaker 4: look at it and go, hey, Jackson Dart plays a
- 35:43Speaker 4: physical brand of football. He gets hurt a lot. So
- 35:46Speaker 4: we need to have a good backup behind him. Maybe J.J.
- 35:50Speaker 4: McCarthy becomes trade bait. But yeah, I think right now,
- 35:53Speaker 4: like I said earlier, I think John Harbaugh was more like, no, no, no.
- 35:57Speaker 4: It's my first year as a New York Giant head coach.
- 36:00Speaker 4: We got things going in the right direction. I don't
- 36:03Speaker 4: want one injury to totally derail things here. And I
- 36:06Speaker 4: think he felt that McCarthy could run their offense more
- 36:09Speaker 4: to what they want than Jameis Winston.
- 36:12Speaker 1: All right, last one. We get you out of here.
- 36:14Speaker 1: We appreciate the time.
- 36:16Speaker 3: I don't know what the hell Jamar Chase said to
- 36:18Speaker 3: the Bengals at halftime, but if that's the team that
- 36:21Speaker 3: they're going to play like, if they're going to play
- 36:22Speaker 3: like they did in the second half against the Ravens,
- 36:25Speaker 3: That team's winning a Super Bowl, Chris.
- 36:27Speaker 2: No, they're dangerous.
- 36:28Speaker 4: I mean, they're they just the triplets feel like borderline
- 36:32Speaker 4: unstoppable once they kind of get going.
- 36:34Speaker 1: Right.
- 36:34Speaker 4: And that's what kind of happened in it. You know,
- 36:37Speaker 4: they had the typical case of like, you know, bi-week jitters,
- 36:40Speaker 4: I think, early on in the football game. They were
- 36:42Speaker 4: just doing dumb stuff. Burrow was uncomfortable. He ran out
- 36:46Speaker 4: of the pocket a few times where I was like, whoa,
- 36:48Speaker 4: where are we going? It's perfect protection. They had a
- 36:50Speaker 4: few drops. He missed a throw or two. So they
- 36:53Speaker 4: had it kind of all going. And then their defense
- 36:55Speaker 4: couldn't get off the field in the first half. So
- 36:57Speaker 4: that was an issue, too. They just couldn't get in
- 36:59Speaker 4: a rhythm.
- 37:00Speaker 2: But, you know, their.
- 37:01Speaker 4: Defense is better than last year. That's for sure.
- 37:03Speaker 2: They're respectable. And they can make some plays.
- 37:07Speaker 4: They got two really good corners on the edge. And
- 37:09Speaker 4: Al Golden isn't afraid to take a chance or do
- 37:11Speaker 4: some things with the defensive front at times. And, yeah,
- 37:16Speaker 4: like you saw last week, once that offense gets going
- 37:18Speaker 4: and they're protecting well this year, they're pretty much he's unstoppable,
- 37:23Speaker 4: Joe Burrow. Once he starts to go, oh, wait, I'm comfortable. Oh, wait,
- 37:26Speaker 4: I see how they're kind of playing me. It just
- 37:28Speaker 4: becomes surgical. And you can't stop them. So I'm with you.
- 37:32Speaker 4: It's rare that I feel like I put a defense
- 37:34Speaker 4: that's like, oh, okay, they're top 20 and this is
- 37:37Speaker 4: a Super Bowl team, but this is one of those
- 37:39Speaker 4: teams that can do it.
- 37:39Speaker 2: They're a rare breed.
- 37:42Speaker 1: Arch Manning, going to be in Texas next year?
- 37:45Speaker 2: I mean, I would hope so.
- 37:46Speaker 4: I mean, I hear all this talk and, you know,
- 37:50Speaker 4: I just, I still want to go, damn, I mean,
- 37:53Speaker 4: Texas loves you.
- 37:54Speaker 2: You got Steve Sarkisian. I don't know. I mean, I know, listen,
- 37:58Speaker 2: the pressure can get thick there in Austin. I've been there.
- 38:00Speaker 4: I experienced it. And you can make you edgy. I
- 38:04Speaker 4: think we saw edgy arch last week.
- 38:06Speaker 1: A little bit.
- 38:07Speaker 4: And I think Steve Sarkeesian even commented on that because
- 38:10Speaker 4: I'm sure just like I did, he was walking around
- 38:13Speaker 4: campus and people are yelling at him going, you suck.
- 38:15Speaker 2: Or, you know, you're not your.
- 38:17Speaker 4: Uncle or like, you know, that's where Texas fans can
- 38:20Speaker 4: be brutal that way.
- 38:21Speaker 2: They really can.
- 38:22Speaker 1: Right.
- 38:23Speaker 4: So, you know, but I hope that doesn't get to him.
- 38:26Speaker 4: And also within this too, like, I know it hasn't
- 38:30Speaker 4: gone the way everybody wants, but Arch Manning is part
- 38:33Speaker 4: of the reason it hasn't gone as well. He's got
- 38:35Speaker 4: to take some of this. We can't always pawn it
- 38:37Speaker 4: off to go, oh, his last name's Manning. It must
- 38:39Speaker 4: be everybody else's fault. Everyone's kind of tiptoeing around it.
- 38:44Speaker 4: I feel like recently on some of the games, like
- 38:46Speaker 4: Jesse Palmer and Kirk Herbstreet, they tried to show some
- 38:49Speaker 4: plays finally where they go, hey, people are open. He's
- 38:52Speaker 4: got to throw the ball to them. He's got to
- 38:54Speaker 4: hit the guy, right, in that. He's got talent. We
- 38:57Speaker 4: know he can do it. He needs to run around more.
- 39:00Speaker 4: I think that's one thing I'd like to see more. And, yeah,
- 39:03Speaker 4: the throwing is inconsistent. But I hope he stays at Texas.
- 39:07Speaker 4: I mean, I like him, I root for him, and
- 39:09Speaker 4: I do think he's got potential to be a first-rounder,
- 39:12Speaker 4: but he's not going to be a first-rounder right now.
- 39:14Speaker 2: That's not going to happen.
- 39:14Speaker 3: All right, PFT with Florio every day on Peacock, the
- 39:18Speaker 3: Unbuttoned podcast as well. He's got Saturdays doing college football.
- 39:22Speaker 3: He's all over the place. We miss you, buddy. We
- 39:24Speaker 3: love you. Thank you for doing this. I know you're
- 39:26Speaker 3: short on time, so we appreciate your.
- 39:28Speaker 2: Time during your busy time.
- 39:30Speaker 4: I'll be more of a regular guest with you assholes
- 39:32Speaker 4: once again, okay?
