- 0:00Speaker 1: Let us pray. And he said unto them, Be not affrighted.
- 0:05Speaker 1: Ye seek Jesus of Nazareth, which was crucified. He is risen.
- 0:11Speaker 1: He is not here. Behold the place where they laid him.
- 0:15Speaker 1: Mark 16.6 Thank you, God, that through your promise in
- 0:21Speaker 1: the garden, we were given new life in Jesus. Even
- 0:27Speaker 1: though his body was bruised by the crucifixion, His act
- 0:31Speaker 1: of resurrection crushed the head of the serpent Satan forever.
- 0:37Speaker 1: For in doing so, you took the power away from
- 0:40Speaker 1: sin and death, Jesus. When I am tempted to go
- 0:45Speaker 1: back to the sins of my past, remind me, Holy Spirit,
- 0:50Speaker 1: that they are not there. Remind me that through the death, burial,
- 0:55Speaker 1: and resurrection of Jesus, my sins were washed away by
- 0:59Speaker 1: the blood of the Lamb.
- 1:02Speaker 2: Hallelujah.
- 1:04Speaker 1: Thank you, Jesus, that through your sacrifice I have new
- 1:09Speaker 1: life and new power. Thank you, Lord, that the stone
- 1:13Speaker 1: was rolled away and that the tomb is empty. I
- 1:18Speaker 1: choose to celebrate because an empty tomb means an occupied
- 1:24Speaker 1: throne ready for me to approach, to tap into the
- 1:28Speaker 1: greatest power, provision, and love. I've ever known. In Jesus' name. Amen.
- 1:40Speaker 1: Thanks for making prayer a priority in your life. To
- 1:44Speaker 1: hear the Bible come to life, stay tuned for the
- 1:47Speaker 1: Bible in a Year. Brought to you by BibleInAYear.com.
- 1:59Speaker 3: The Resurrection In our last story, we learned about the
- 2:03Speaker 3: death of Jesus on a cross and the offering up
- 2:06Speaker 3: of his life for the sins of humanity. After his death,
- 2:10Speaker 3: he was placed and buried in the tomb of a
- 2:12Speaker 3: man named Joseph. In this story, we will learn about
- 2:16Speaker 3: the glorious resurrection of Jesus Christ as inspired by the Gospels.
- 2:25Speaker 2: Hello and welcome to the Bible in a Year podcast.
- 2:28Speaker 2: I'm Jack Graham. In yesterday's reading, we heard how Jesus
- 2:32Speaker 2: went to the cross, suffered, and died there at Calvary
- 2:36Speaker 2: for our sins. His physical pain was unimaginable, but the
- 2:40Speaker 2: pain of separation from the Heavenly Father was even greater,
- 2:45Speaker 2: as the one who was sinless now bears our sins.
- 2:48Speaker 2: The Father, God Himself, turned His back upon His darling
- 2:52Speaker 2: Son as the sins of the world were placed on Him.
- 2:55Speaker 2: The wrath of God came upon Jesus that day, And
- 2:58Speaker 2: Christ was judged for our sins. He bore the weight
- 3:02Speaker 2: of the world. And yet in that sacrifice, the justice
- 3:06Speaker 2: of God himself was satisfied so that we now can
- 3:09Speaker 2: have a relationship with God. That relationship with God is
- 3:13Speaker 2: made possible for what we read about today. And that
- 3:16Speaker 2: is that Jesus is alive because he came out of
- 3:19Speaker 2: the grave. The resurrection is our subject. So let's listen now.
- 3:27Speaker 3: Christ's death had caused the earth itself to cry out
- 3:30Speaker 3: in mourning. His disciples hiding and alone mimicked the earth
- 3:35Speaker 3: in sorrow. Though the morning sun had come the world
- 3:40Speaker 3: still felt dark. A fear and trembling came over all
- 3:44Speaker 3: that were once loyal to Jesus. Would they do to
- 3:47Speaker 3: them what they did to Jesus? In fear of their
- 3:51Speaker 3: lives and embarrassment of their cowardice the disciples hid themselves away.
- 3:57Speaker 3: Those who had conspired to kill Jesus suddenly had felt
- 4:00Speaker 3: an uneasiness bubble up in them. The day after Jesus' crucifixion,
- 4:05Speaker 3: they had come to Pilate and said to him, This
- 4:08Speaker 3: man we have put to death once said that he
- 4:11Speaker 3: would be raised again on the third day. We must
- 4:14Speaker 3: have guards around the tomb lest his disciples take his
- 4:17Speaker 3: body and claim he was risen from the dead. Pilate
- 4:20Speaker 3: heard what the Pharisees said and agreed. Send guards to
- 4:24Speaker 3: make sure the tomb is buried and sealed. Post guards
- 4:28Speaker 3: in front of the tomb to make sure the disciples
- 4:30Speaker 3: do not attempt to steal Jesus' body. On the third day,
- 4:34Speaker 3: in the cool of the morning, Mary Magdalene and Mary
- 4:38Speaker 3: the mother of James left to go visit the tomb
- 4:40Speaker 3: where Jesus had laid. They held spices and flowers to
- 4:44Speaker 3: lay beside the entrance of the tomb. Approaching the tomb,
- 4:48Speaker 3: their footsteps were interrupted by the shaking of the earth
- 4:51Speaker 3: beneath them. A bright light flashed before them. and the
- 4:55Speaker 3: guards beside the tomb fell to the ground motionless. The
- 4:59Speaker 3: two women opened their eyes to the sight of an
- 5:01Speaker 3: angel sitting beside Jesus' tomb. The stone that once sealed
- 5:05Speaker 3: it was rolled away. Looking at the women with a
- 5:08Speaker 3: face shining brighter than the sun, the angel said, Why
- 5:12Speaker 3: do you seek the living among the dead? He is
- 5:15Speaker 3: not here. He has risen as he said he would.
- 5:19Speaker 3: Now go quickly and tell his disciples. As the two
- 5:24Speaker 3: women fled to go tell the others, they were met
- 5:26Speaker 3: on the road by a man. Flustered and confused, they
- 5:30Speaker 3: could barely pay any attention. Greetings, the man said. He
- 5:35Speaker 3: spoke to them with a familiar and gentle tone. They
- 5:38Speaker 3: looked up to him and discovered it was him. He
- 5:42Speaker 3: who was hung bloodied and demolished on the cross stood
- 5:45Speaker 3: before them. No words or expressions could quite capture their elation,
- 5:50Speaker 3: so they simply clung to him. as Jacob once did
- 5:53Speaker 3: on the hill generations ago. They too were trembling with joy, fear,
- 5:58Speaker 3: and confusion. Do not be afraid, nor should you cling
- 6:02Speaker 3: to me too long, Jesus said. Quick, go and tell
- 6:06Speaker 3: my brothers to meet me in Galilee. There they will
- 6:09Speaker 3: see me. The women did as they were told and
- 6:13Speaker 3: immediately ran to the disciples. The two brought word to
- 6:17Speaker 3: Peter and John. Though they doubted, they wasted no time.
- 6:21Speaker 3: fleeing towards the garden where Jesus was buried so they
- 6:24Speaker 3: could see it for themselves. John, the youngest of the disciples,
- 6:29Speaker 3: ran the fastest, determined to see his king once again.
- 6:34Speaker 3: He ran inside, picked up the pieces of cloth that
- 6:37Speaker 3: once wrapped his Messiah, and welled up with tears. The
- 6:41Speaker 3: cloths were lying there alone on the stone, but his
- 6:45Speaker 3: king was gone. As the two Marys had said, the
- 6:48Speaker 3: tomb was empty, and joy and anticipation erupted in both
- 6:52Speaker 3: of them. The darkness over the face of the earth
- 6:56Speaker 3: was lifted, and light was restored to the hearts of
- 6:59Speaker 3: those who followed Jesus. The next chapter of the disciples'
- 7:03Speaker 3: lives would be marked with more wonder and exploits than
- 7:06Speaker 3: their imaginations could ever predict. The king had risen, and
- 7:11Speaker 3: the only thing remaining in the tomb were the sins
- 7:13Speaker 3: of mankind he had put to death on the cross.
- 7:17Speaker 3: God once promised in the Garden of Eden that the
- 7:20Speaker 3: serpent would bruise the heel of a promised son, yet
- 7:24Speaker 3: he would crush his head. Jesus' scars from crucifixion remained.
- 7:29Speaker 3: He was, in fact, bruised by evil. Yet the head
- 7:33Speaker 3: of the serpent, the enemy, and all his exploits were
- 7:37Speaker 3: crushed under the heel of the promised Messiah. On that cross,
- 7:41Speaker 3: the sins of humanity and all that plagued the hearts
- 7:44Speaker 3: of men were crushed. And the Son of God proved
- 7:48Speaker 3: that even death has no power over him, nor would
- 7:52Speaker 3: it have power over all those that followed him after. Amen.
- 8:01Speaker 2: In today's scripture, the dark shadow of grief and fear
- 8:05Speaker 2: hang over the entire world, and none are feeling it
- 8:08Speaker 2: more powerfully than the disciples and those who follow Jesus
- 8:12Speaker 2: to the end. For them, it seemed that all hope
- 8:15Speaker 2: is lost. Though Jesus had told them he would die
- 8:19Speaker 2: and be raised again, it seemed an impossibility at this point.
- 8:23Speaker 2: Two days had already passed, and still Jesus was behind
- 8:26Speaker 2: a heavy stone in a tomb. Those who had orchestrated
- 8:30Speaker 2: this unjust execution and crucifixion had heard about Jesus' claims
- 8:35Speaker 2: that after three days he would rise again, so they
- 8:39Speaker 2: arranged for Jesus' tomb to be guarded by Roman soldiers
- 8:43Speaker 2: so that none of his followers could break in and
- 8:45Speaker 2: steal the body and claim a resurrection. I can only
- 8:49Speaker 2: imagine the sorrow and terror of those who had followed Jesus.
- 8:53Speaker 2: If their master had been killed, surely they would be
- 8:56Speaker 2: in grave danger. But more than that, their dearest friend
- 8:59Speaker 2: and teacher and Messiah, the one that they had trusted
- 9:02Speaker 2: and loved like no one else, was gone. They were
- 9:06Speaker 2: soon to experience in a very real way what Psalm
- 9:09Speaker 2: 30 taught them, that though sorrow may last through the night,
- 9:13Speaker 2: joy comes.
- 9:13Speaker 1: In the mornings.
- 9:15Speaker 2: For on the morning of the third day, everything was
- 9:18Speaker 2: going to change forever. On that morning, Mary Magdalene and Mary,
- 9:23Speaker 2: the mother of James, made their way to the tomb,
- 9:25Speaker 2: bringing spices to anoint the body of Jesus, because they
- 9:29Speaker 2: did not expect that he would actually rise from the
- 9:32Speaker 2: dead as he promised he would. Of course, they had
- 9:35Speaker 2: no idea how they would move the heavy stone that
- 9:37Speaker 2: blocked the access to the body, but they went anyway, desperate,
- 9:42Speaker 2: desiring to show honor to their beloved friend. What a
- 9:47Speaker 2: surprise they were in for. When they got to the
- 9:49Speaker 2: place where Jesus was laid to rest, the large stone
- 9:52Speaker 2: had already been rolled away. When they entered the tomb,
- 9:55Speaker 2: they did not find the Lord's body. No, they encountered
- 9:58Speaker 2: two men dressed in sparkles. white robes, angel beings. They
- 10:03Speaker 2: were understandably afraid, but the angel spoke to them reassuringly,
- 10:07Speaker 2: and we hear their words in Luke 24, verses 6
- 10:10Speaker 2: to 7. He is not here, but he is risen.
- 10:13Speaker 2: Remember how he told you while he was still in
- 10:16Speaker 2: Galilee that the Son of Man must be delivered into
- 10:19Speaker 2: the hands of sinful men and be crucified and on
- 10:22Speaker 2: the third day rise. Then they remembered what Jesus had
- 10:27Speaker 2: promised them and they ran to tell the others the
- 10:30Speaker 2: good news. The greatest good news the world has ever
- 10:32Speaker 2: heard came out of an empty tomb in Jerusalem 2,000
- 10:37Speaker 2: years ago. Jesus had risen just as he said he would.
- 10:42Speaker 2: Everything Jesus said, everything Jesus did, everything about Jesus hinges
- 10:48Speaker 2: on this miracle of the resurrection. If he never rose
- 10:52Speaker 2: from the dead, if the tomb is not empty that day,
- 10:55Speaker 2: then Jesus was just a compelling speaker, a magnetic personality,
- 11:00Speaker 2: a religious teacher that led people astray. But if Jesus
- 11:03Speaker 2: did in fact conquer death and rise from the grave,
- 11:06Speaker 2: then he truly is the Savior of the world, the
- 11:08Speaker 2: Son of God, perfect God and perfect man, alive forevermore.
- 11:13Speaker 2: His death accomplished what he said it would, the forgiveness
- 11:16Speaker 2: of our sins. And with his resurrection, he removed the
- 11:20Speaker 2: sting of death, eternal separation from God, and made a
- 11:23Speaker 2: way for those who follow him to live forever in
- 11:26Speaker 2: the presence of God. Jesus had said in John 14, 6,
- 11:30Speaker 2: I am the way and the truth and the life,
- 11:33Speaker 2: and no one comes to the Father but by me.
- 11:36Speaker 2: Jesus made a way, and it went through an empty tomb.
- 11:39Speaker 2: He rose from the grave, and now we can trust
- 11:42Speaker 2: him with our lives. And how do we know that
- 11:45Speaker 2: he rose from the dead? Because of the many witnesses
- 11:48Speaker 2: that saw him, starting with these two women, who rushed
- 11:52Speaker 2: to tell others that they had encountered the risen Christ.
- 11:55Speaker 2: They embraced him, joy like they had never known filling
- 11:58Speaker 2: their hearts. And they couldn't wait to tell the disciples
- 12:01Speaker 2: the amazing news. When Peter and John heard, they were doubtful.
- 12:05Speaker 2: So they ran to the tomb and found it empty,
- 12:08Speaker 2: except for the burial cloths Jesus had been wrapped in,
- 12:11Speaker 2: which were folded neatly at the tomb. This was not
- 12:14Speaker 2: a grave robbery. This was a resurrection. There are many
- 12:18Speaker 2: evidences for the resurrection of Jesus Christ. We can believe
- 12:22Speaker 2: in the resurrection. But the greatest evidence of all is
- 12:26Speaker 2: the changed lives of the disciples, whose world was turned
- 12:29Speaker 2: upside down at the cross, but right side up at
- 12:32Speaker 2: the resurrection. The one who had commanded the lame to walk,
- 12:36Speaker 2: the sick to be healed, and the dead to rise
- 12:38Speaker 2: had walked right out of his tomb. He is alive.
- 12:42Speaker 2: Christ is alive. He did not need someone else to
- 12:46Speaker 2: command him to rise, for he has power over sin, death, hell,
- 12:50Speaker 2: and the grave. And through him, because of his cross
- 12:54Speaker 2: and resurrection, we can have the forgiveness of our sins
- 12:59Speaker 2: and eternal life. This is why the gospel is such
- 13:02Speaker 2: good news that the whole world needs to hear. Would
- 13:06Speaker 2: you pray with me? If you've never received Jesus, the
- 13:09Speaker 2: living Lord, as your Savior and your God, you can
- 13:12Speaker 2: trust him right now by simply breathing this prayer. Lord Jesus,
- 13:17Speaker 2: I know that I have sinned and broken your commandments,
- 13:19Speaker 2: but I believe you died to save me, and so
- 13:22Speaker 2: I do trust you as my Lord and Savior. I
- 13:25Speaker 2: will follow you all the days of my life in
- 13:28Speaker 2: the power of your Spirit, And when you come for me,
- 13:31Speaker 2: I'll be ready because I put my faith and trust
- 13:34Speaker 2: in you. In Jesus' name, amen. Thank you for listening
