- 0:54Speaker 1: that is uh, that is correct. I feel like we
- 0:56Speaker 1: could just end the show. That is gonna be on
- 0:58Speaker 1: my that will be on my team still and right
- 1:01Speaker 1: and the show, but we'll return to that. Because you're
- 1:04Speaker 1: you're super familiar. You're a comedian, you do stand up
- 1:06Speaker 1: and do television, you do podcasts, so you're like, really,
- 1:09Speaker 1: you're like very good at entertainment. I guess, so, yeah,
- 1:14Speaker 1: that's that's that's what I do. But I will say this,
- 1:16Speaker 1: I you know, I work in New York and l
- 1:19Speaker 1: A a lot of famous people all over the place.
- 1:22Speaker 1: I've never been a star struck as I am in Bozeman,
- 1:24Speaker 1: Montana with you two guys. I like to hear it's
- 1:28Speaker 1: wild Man telling shows you how good of an entertaining
- 1:30Speaker 1: you are because you know how to play the No, dude,
- 1:32Speaker 1: I'm telling you, yeah, over you honest are like you
- 1:40Speaker 1: guys are like the j Lo and Shakira of the
- 1:43Speaker 1: hunting world. Dude, I've been exercising so much I'm gonna
- 1:47Speaker 1: wind up looking like about look like j Lo. Manum
- 1:52Speaker 1: telling you. I've been since since your show was on
- 1:56Speaker 1: what was the Sportsman's network Sportsman channel, Yes, Sportsman Channel,
- 2:00Speaker 1: I've been I've been watching man. Huge fan, huge fan.
- 2:03Speaker 1: I'm very excited to be here. What I want to
- 2:05Speaker 1: do is we're gonna talk about a couple of things
- 2:06Speaker 1: and just so you can help us, because being such
- 2:08Speaker 1: a experienced entertainer, you could just weigh in and tell
- 2:12Speaker 1: us if what we're talking about entertaining or not. Uh. Well,
- 2:16Speaker 1: first thing, Yanna, it's like you're back, but I can't
- 2:19Speaker 1: really you're not like the co host anymore, to be honest,
- 2:23Speaker 1: To be honest with you, that didn't take long because well,
- 2:25Speaker 1: how many did you miss eat out? To ask Karan,
- 2:28Speaker 1: he's out like a sign. He's out an assignment, I
- 2:31Speaker 1: think like the past maybe three. So he's like a guest.
- 2:35Speaker 1: Now you're all you're all also in Nashville for a one. Yeah,
- 2:41Speaker 1: he's kind of like a you're like a regular, like
- 2:43Speaker 1: a guest, like you know a guy that joins us
- 2:45Speaker 1: now and then that's right. Um, I had a note
- 2:49Speaker 1: to talk about. I want to talk about Janice is
- 2:51Speaker 1: big insult that he gave me. Yanna saw me make
- 2:53Speaker 1: a note about him insulting me. We're at a wedding
- 2:57Speaker 1: um for a colleague of ours, and it got to
- 3:01Speaker 1: be like the part of a wedding where everybody already
- 3:03Speaker 1: ate and there's like dancing getting started. And I informed
- 3:09Speaker 1: my wife I was ready to go home. It was
- 3:11Speaker 1: about eight. Uh. She thought I was kidding, so that
- 3:16Speaker 1: was a joke, but I let her know that it
- 3:18Speaker 1: was in fact not joking and I was ready to
- 3:20Speaker 1: go home. And Johann he was going out to the
- 3:22Speaker 1: dance floor with his woman, and um, he made a
- 3:26Speaker 1: comment like aren't you planning on dancing or you're not
- 3:29Speaker 1: gonna dance? And I said, your honest, Um, every man's
- 3:33Speaker 1: got his limits. And your honest left me with by
- 3:38Speaker 1: saying I'm gonna go push past mine and went to
- 3:42Speaker 1: the dance floor. Dude humiliated. At nine pm, I was
- 3:49Speaker 1: laying in my bed with my lady watching a movie.
- 3:53Speaker 1: By nine pm. Yeah, she told me. She told me.
- 3:56Speaker 1: It wasn't just a movie, it was a documentary about No, No,
- 4:01Speaker 1: it was it was Have you watched Dan? Have you
- 4:03Speaker 1: watched um the Lighthouse? No, I haven't. That's a back
- 4:08Speaker 1: it's two people. There's two people in Will Dafoe, the
- 4:12Speaker 1: kid from the guy from the Vampire movies. Yeah, who
- 4:17Speaker 1: I like a lot. Now. He had a hard time
- 4:19Speaker 1: maintaining his accent through through the film. Um, great movie. Wait,
- 4:24Speaker 1: why did you leave your buddy's wedding to go watch
- 4:28Speaker 1: the Lighthouse? Shouldn't you be celebrating this moment of joy? No,
- 4:31Speaker 1: because I don't, like I just have. I just have
- 4:34Speaker 1: very hard time socializing, really small talk and socializing because
- 4:40Speaker 1: people come to and they say annoying things, like they
- 4:43Speaker 1: want to tell you they're hunting stories, and you're like, God,
- 4:45Speaker 1: I just want to hang out and have it. I
- 4:46Speaker 1: just want to dance with There's a little bit of that. Dan.
- 4:54Speaker 1: I saw a couple of guys must be telling about
- 4:56Speaker 1: their their hunting stories. Uh oh, what I want to
- 5:00Speaker 1: uch about the Lighthouse. It's a great movie, but it's
- 5:01Speaker 1: my new favorite word is in it um mirror folk
- 5:07Speaker 1: meaning murr men and mermaids together as mr folks. And
- 5:14Speaker 1: on a related note, we were recently talking about viviparous
- 5:16Speaker 1: and oviviparous reproduction strategies and how sharks are you know,
- 5:22Speaker 1: we're like the egg develops, you know, a shark will
- 5:25Speaker 1: sort of carry it's it's egg sack will get bigger, bigger, bigger,
- 5:28Speaker 1: and it carries it externally. Yeah you ever see this?
- 5:31Speaker 1: I don't think I've seen it carry externally. Yeah, that's
- 5:34Speaker 1: It's like it's like they'll get to a point where
- 5:36Speaker 1: they there's like an egg hanging out some kinds of
- 5:38Speaker 1: sharks and it's developing out of the of Um is that?
- 5:42Speaker 1: Is that something that's great? If you know, do you
- 5:46Speaker 1: speak multiple languages? Which ones? I speak French, Spanish and
- 5:51Speaker 1: farsily in English? Yeah? In English? My English is ok.
- 5:55Speaker 1: You know, so many didn't even list them all um
- 5:59Speaker 1: uh Am Londren are very old. Sand Longer is telling
- 6:02Speaker 1: me that there's a term for like, when that egg
- 6:04Speaker 1: sact are you looking it up? Yunny? Yeah, when the
- 6:06Speaker 1: eggs act um, you know, the fish emerges and the
- 6:12Speaker 1: egg sact is discarded and when it washes up on
- 6:15Speaker 1: the beach, people will find it and it's known as
- 6:17Speaker 1: a Mermaid's purse. Yeah, because we're talking about whether Mermaid
- 6:21Speaker 1: would be like just curious how much people have thought through,
- 6:27Speaker 1: you know, like if someone has like enough of a
- 6:30Speaker 1: there's someone who has sort of enough of a sense.
- 6:33Speaker 1: You know, people that are into aliens, right, sometimes they
- 6:35Speaker 1: have like their whole life history. Right. If someone got
- 6:38Speaker 1: so into Mermaids that they got into they're like, oh
- 6:42Speaker 1: and they reproduced by It's gotta be a fantasy writer
- 6:45Speaker 1: who's like the leading voice on mermaid what they do.
- 6:48Speaker 1: Because I look at them and I don't see any anything.
- 6:53Speaker 1: I don't see an orifice. Yeah, I would think that
- 6:57Speaker 1: they're a sexual, but they use their sexuality to get stuff.
- 7:04Speaker 1: I gotta come from some like that. Man. That's good,
- 7:07Speaker 1: that's good. Um moving I real quick. We're gonna don't
- 7:11Speaker 1: don't worry, Danny, didn't waste your trip. We're gonna get
- 7:13Speaker 1: to you taking time. I love this. I love this man.
- 7:16Speaker 1: Quick question. The guy uh was right and and wanted
- 7:19Speaker 1: to get our thoughts. I'm using a baby's umbilic record
- 7:25Speaker 1: as fishing bait. Um. He says he's kept he's kept
- 7:30Speaker 1: why he's kept it. He's kept in his dresser. He's
- 7:35Speaker 1: kept in his dresser. I don't know, man, you have
- 7:37Speaker 1: to rehydrate it. Uh, but it'd be a real conversation piece.
- 7:41Speaker 1: And it led to um. I saw that I was
- 7:45Speaker 1: might have another email we got from a guy who
- 7:46Speaker 1: was saying that he catches fish. He takes you know,
- 7:50Speaker 1: foam earplugs. Yeah, yeah, he takes lead lead jigheads and
- 7:56Speaker 1: puts foam earplugs on here and says it slays orange.
- 8:00Speaker 1: Puts an orange foam ear plug onto a lead head
- 8:02Speaker 1: of jig. Does he put some scent on this that
- 8:04Speaker 1: they'd hold? Sent he had a note about scent on
- 8:09Speaker 1: interesting man, I just wonder if they're neutraally buoyant because
- 8:13Speaker 1: it's got a lead head and a foam body. He
- 8:17Speaker 1: even sent pictures of fish he's caught that way. He
- 8:20Speaker 1: just threads it right on there like a soft plastic.
- 8:23Speaker 1: So yeah, he uses the foam of ear plug And
- 8:26Speaker 1: I don't know if he's say, I feel like sometimes
- 8:27Speaker 1: people are yanking our chain. He says, he pisces on
- 8:30Speaker 1: and it makes it work better. Um, he's at home
- 8:34Speaker 1: cracking up that you actually said he was like it worked.
- 8:37Speaker 1: Guys like to try it. The final thing on a
- 8:43Speaker 1: past show is we're talking. Yeah, he was probably gone.
- 8:46Speaker 1: He probably there were you there for the Justin Schmidt.
- 8:49Speaker 1: I was gone. I was sad to miss that one.
- 8:52Speaker 1: I don't even have, like I don't have like a
- 8:55Speaker 1: person I can like reminisce with about Well, Phil, he's
- 9:00Speaker 1: here for everyone you don't want to reminisce with. I
- 9:02Speaker 1: don't know that he really pays attention, you know, Okay,
- 9:05Speaker 1: let me as see this Phil. According to according to
- 9:10Speaker 1: Dr Justin Schmidt, uh huh, who we had on, founder
- 9:14Speaker 1: of the Schmidt Pain Index. Uh does he know about?
- 9:20Speaker 1: What are his have been his findings about rehabilitating a
- 9:24Speaker 1: tarantula that has been coma toast by a tarantula hawk.
- 9:30Speaker 1: I do not remember Steve figured oh wait it was
- 9:34Speaker 1: there was someone he knew was like trying to drop
- 9:38Speaker 1: feed the transla water and and keep it hydrated. Like yeah,
- 9:44Speaker 1: so they were talking about getting in between the little pincers. Yeah,
- 9:47Speaker 1: So a trance La hawk is a predator, a Transula predator,
- 9:50Speaker 1: and the Transla hawk paralyze injects. The Transla paralyzes the
- 9:55Speaker 1: Transla and then it uses like there's like a term
- 9:57Speaker 1: I can't remember what is, like a parasite. It's like
- 9:59Speaker 1: a parasit and now suster and then it lays its
- 10:01Speaker 1: egg on the trantula. The tranchula stays alive. He's alive
- 10:06Speaker 1: but doesn't move, and the parasite the egg hatches, and
- 10:12Speaker 1: the larva is strategic about how it consumes the trantula.
- 10:17Speaker 1: What's the name of this episode? Why it hurts so bad? Dr?
- 10:21Speaker 1: Schmidt on why it hurts so bad? So it feeds
- 10:25Speaker 1: on it, like it eats its non essential organs. First,
- 10:29Speaker 1: it's just like so dastardly, like like eats its non
- 10:33Speaker 1: essential organs, and then like eats and eats, and eventually
- 10:36Speaker 1: it's like, hey, I about used you up. And then
- 10:38Speaker 1: they'll like eat the thing that kills it. And they've
- 10:42Speaker 1: gone in um to see like well like how long
- 10:46Speaker 1: how lingering is the paralysis and so they've gone and
- 10:51Speaker 1: you know, it's just like this stuff you can't do
- 10:53Speaker 1: to people, you can't even do this the rabbits anymore.
- 10:56Speaker 1: But they would go and like keep it the tranchula hydrated,
- 11:02Speaker 1: two to see how they just watch what happened. It's
- 11:06Speaker 1: so yeah, it's pretty fucked up. Yeah, so they keep
- 11:10Speaker 1: it they hydrated, like keep nursing it along. You know.
- 11:13Speaker 1: It's just it's the things you can get away with
- 11:16Speaker 1: when it's a tarantula. But this guy wrote in and
- 11:18Speaker 1: said that, um, he's got a weird, crazy aunt in
- 11:25Speaker 1: Arizona and she has rescued, rescued tarantulas from Transla hawks.
- 11:39Speaker 1: And she makes a little concoction of um, what she
- 11:45Speaker 1: calls bug soup. She gets crickets and window flies and
- 11:51Speaker 1: she mashes them up with a little water into a
- 11:54Speaker 1: little mixture and puts in the eye dropper and drips
- 11:57Speaker 1: it into the mouth of the trantula. And he says
- 12:01Speaker 1: it does quote it does seem to work. Um, the
- 12:04Speaker 1: translate first won't drink, usually due to confusion paralysis. Then
- 12:11Speaker 1: by a hair two or three it will start accepting.
- 12:16Speaker 1: It takes her about three weeks to get a Transla
- 12:18Speaker 1: up and running. I think we need to tell Dr
- 12:21Speaker 1: Schmidt who this person is. And uh, yeah, because the
- 12:27Speaker 1: you know, she's usually able to get the translate back
- 12:30Speaker 1: up and on his way. The world's mad news, and
- 12:35Speaker 1: then you get a little gem of glimmer hope. There's
- 12:38Speaker 1: something missing here, though, whisper How does she rid the
- 12:43Speaker 1: transula of the larvae that's gonna eat it? Or is
- 12:46Speaker 1: eating it? He doesn't get into that. I'm guessing she
- 12:49Speaker 1: plucks it off. Why am I here? He said? Now,
- 12:54Speaker 1: when she's here, you mean, like, because we could have
- 12:58Speaker 1: this first. It's just timing. You're already in the air
- 13:05Speaker 1: and we're like, man, this guy's coming. It's like the
- 13:08Speaker 1: wrong person. He's already connecting. It's not like city, she said.
- 13:12Speaker 1: He goes down to say that when she takes so
- 13:14Speaker 1: it's before the egg land because the translog gets upset
- 13:19Speaker 1: when she takes the transil away. But you know, then
- 13:23Speaker 1: she starts the rehabilitation program. It's great. Tell us about
- 13:29Speaker 1: your podcast, Like, can you run through all the things
- 13:32Speaker 1: you do? Sure? Yeah, I'm first and foremost, like I'm
- 13:37Speaker 1: a comedian. I guess I'm an actor. I'm gonna be
- 13:40Speaker 1: on a new Kevin James's new Netflix show as an actor.
- 13:43Speaker 1: As an actor, do what is it like? Once a comedian,
- 13:46Speaker 1: always a comedian, Like, is that like the thing that
- 13:48Speaker 1: if you start out as a comedian and you regard
- 13:52Speaker 1: yourself as a comedian and then you start acting in
- 13:55Speaker 1: all this stuff, do you get do you guys? You
- 13:57Speaker 1: guys like to stick with comedian like that has more
- 13:59Speaker 1: cash a you feel. I think it's more it's like
- 14:01Speaker 1: a fraternity. It's kind of like a fraternity that we're
- 14:03Speaker 1: all in because everyone who's a comedian starts out in
- 14:06Speaker 1: comedies somehow, and then everyone branches off somehow. Like the
- 14:10Speaker 1: guy who wrote Twelve Years of Slave was a stand
- 14:12Speaker 1: up comic and like he's still a comedian in my eye. Yeah,
- 14:16Speaker 1: I mean so it's like I think that there's it's
- 14:19Speaker 1: a very cool umbrella to be able to do a
- 14:21Speaker 1: lot of different things. Like I started with stand up,
- 14:24Speaker 1: now I do acting, I sell TV shows, I write.
- 14:28Speaker 1: I just started this podcast which is quickly becoming, you know,
- 14:33Speaker 1: the I think the most listened to or watch things
- 14:36Speaker 1: that I've ever done, which is cool. Green Eggs and Dan.
- 14:40Speaker 1: It's simply going into celebrities fridges UH and getting in
- 14:46Speaker 1: just an in depth conversation about their relationship to food
- 14:48Speaker 1: and to eating and UH and restaurants and whatnot. But
- 14:52Speaker 1: I think there's this wireistic aspect of I'm sure a
- 14:55Speaker 1: lot of people want to know what your fridge looks like, Steve,
- 14:57Speaker 1: and guess what they're going to find out, you know. Um,
- 15:02Speaker 1: but yeah, I think, um, you know, I do that.
- 15:06Speaker 1: But stand up still remains like something that is like,
- 15:08Speaker 1: you know, I'll still do it on the weekends and
- 15:11Speaker 1: it's just very very It's when you feel yourself. You know,
- 15:16Speaker 1: how many eggs you cycle through in a year, so
- 15:19Speaker 1: like it's like a one of year. It's like an
- 15:21Speaker 1: annual kind of thing. I don't know. I mean, some
- 15:24Speaker 1: some guys do that. They'll they'll do a new hour
- 15:26Speaker 1: every year. I think I'm branching off more into the
- 15:28Speaker 1: writing and TV developing, So for me, it's more just
- 15:30Speaker 1: like getting out there for fun. Um. But uh yeah,
- 15:35Speaker 1: it's uh do you just do walk on? Like what
- 15:37Speaker 1: do you do? I's you know, all the clubs in
- 15:40Speaker 1: l A or in New York wherever I am, I
- 15:41Speaker 1: can usually walk into and they'll be they'll give me
- 15:44Speaker 1: a spot you show up. Yeah, I mean, but I
- 15:47Speaker 1: used to tour a ton and actually I was in Bozeman,
- 15:49Speaker 1: Montana about fifteen years ago at the university. I'm forty one. Yeah, uh,
- 15:57Speaker 1: and it was a way different place. It's very like,
- 16:01Speaker 1: you know, we just went to like a very hip,
- 16:03Speaker 1: cool bakery and had like artisanal sandwiches and bosem in Montana.
- 16:07Speaker 1: I did not think that was gonna happen. Let me
- 16:09Speaker 1: guess which one you went starts with fet it I see. Yeah,
- 16:19Speaker 1: it was delicious different than fifteen years ago. Different years,
- 16:22Speaker 1: you know, I was only what you I was sure
- 16:24Speaker 1: I was better figuring this kind of stuff out. What
- 16:26Speaker 1: year would that have been. I might have been living here,
- 16:29Speaker 1: it was probably two thousand four or five. No, I
- 16:32Speaker 1: was in Miles City. Yeah, I used to hear it
- 16:34Speaker 1: was a different Probably debated driving over to catch the show, really,
- 16:38Speaker 1: but weren't able to make I believed he really. But
- 16:48Speaker 1: that's why, Yeah, I want to go. I'm gonna ask.
- 16:49Speaker 1: I want to get into your get into your lineage
- 16:51Speaker 1: a little bit. But first, when your stand up, do
- 16:54Speaker 1: people um like I'm very very tempted right now to say,
- 16:58Speaker 1: like tell me a joke, yea, that's I'll tell you
- 17:04Speaker 1: that's the equipment. I'm really not I'm really trying to
- 17:07Speaker 1: not say that is just know that you're you're instinct
- 17:13Speaker 1: to do. That is the same as when people come
- 17:16Speaker 1: up to you and they need to tell you this
- 17:18Speaker 1: hunting story. Just show me, show me a picture of
- 17:24Speaker 1: their cousins, neighbors, friends, book. Yeah, same exact thing. How
- 17:31Speaker 1: does that make you feel, Steve? It makes you feel
- 17:33Speaker 1: like leaving the wedding? Am Um, do you do? Do
- 17:39Speaker 1: you currently do the show? Um? The gazillionaiion dollar properties?
- 17:45Speaker 1: It's like a parody of property show. Yeah, it's a
- 17:47Speaker 1: parody of the like a thing that you guys are
- 17:49Speaker 1: like on a schedule. You just kind of do it
- 17:51Speaker 1: when you do it. We did it for five years. Uh,
- 17:53Speaker 1: it's it's over now, but it's still it's still playing
- 17:56Speaker 1: on a bunch of different platforms. But that's on Pluto.
- 17:58Speaker 1: It was, it's on Pluto now. Really, it was probably
- 18:02Speaker 1: the most fun show I've ever done because it was
- 18:03Speaker 1: all improvised. It was a completely improvised show, and it
- 18:07Speaker 1: was like a parody on million dollar Listing, And it
- 18:10Speaker 1: was just so much fun because we got the craziest
- 18:14Speaker 1: like celebrities in to be like the house owners or
- 18:17Speaker 1: people shopping for houses, like Zach Alfanakis was on. I
- 18:20Speaker 1: mean it was crazy. It was really really fun and
- 18:22Speaker 1: the episodes are all out there. Um, if you want
- 18:25Speaker 1: to watch him, I don't know. So that's done though,
- 18:27Speaker 1: that's done. Now new is this this Netflix show? It's
- 18:30Speaker 1: called The Crew with Kevin James. It's about a NASCAR
- 18:33Speaker 1: pit crew. Yeah, and it's a multi caam comedy. It's
- 18:37Speaker 1: gonna be awesome. Really Yeah, what is multi caam comedy?
- 18:41Speaker 1: I'm so glad you asked you, just like we planned before. Um,
- 18:47Speaker 1: a multi caam is like you know, when you see
- 18:49Speaker 1: a comedy that has like a laugh track, that's usually
- 18:51Speaker 1: a multi caam. But you guys are gonna use a
- 18:53Speaker 1: laugh track like, man, we actually have a real live
- 18:56Speaker 1: studio audience that we filmed in front of. Ye see,
- 18:59Speaker 1: I'm not Yeah, you're not familiar with laugh track? Phil? Phil?
- 19:03Speaker 1: Can you uh play the some mash laugh track? Get
- 19:10Speaker 1: way here? A matter of fact, hold on, I love
- 19:12Speaker 1: that last show that you remember when the laugh track
- 19:15Speaker 1: is Matt because they used it and abused it. They did,
- 19:20Speaker 1: they did. It was almost it was like a parody
- 19:23Speaker 1: of a last Well it's the Korean War. They had
- 19:25Speaker 1: to ask the Seinfeld Sefel tracks laugh track, Big Bang theory.
- 19:33Speaker 1: You don't even notice it right you're watching it. When
- 19:35Speaker 1: I told my kids, you'll watch it and you'll listen
- 19:37Speaker 1: to people laughing. My kids like a show that has
- 19:40Speaker 1: a laugh track, And when I tried to explain it
- 19:42Speaker 1: to him, they looked at me like zero company. I'm like, no,
- 19:47Speaker 1: that's a record they're playing. Listen, it's the same Listen,
- 19:51Speaker 1: it's the same people laughing, Like, no, it's not. We do. Actually,
- 19:57Speaker 1: it's just the people that you need to be told
- 20:02Speaker 1: when to laugh. That's why you need the laughter. No,
- 20:05Speaker 1: but we actually do film in front of a live audience,
- 20:07Speaker 1: like two or fifty people. I swear, man, I swear,
- 20:10Speaker 1: I'll show you a little video and yeah, yeah, it's wild.
- 20:14Speaker 1: It's a live audience. But why multicam. It's just because
- 20:19Speaker 1: there's four cameras on you, and it's it's almost like
- 20:21Speaker 1: it was a single cam. So a single cam has
- 20:25Speaker 1: multiple locations and it's not just like kind of confined
- 20:28Speaker 1: if you think about if you think about multicams, uh,
- 20:31Speaker 1: you know the laugh TRACKIE shows, they usually have like
- 20:33Speaker 1: three set pieces like Seinfeld the diner, and then like
- 20:38Speaker 1: usually a third one that's like a new one. So
- 20:41Speaker 1: but if you think of uh, I'm trying to think
- 20:44Speaker 1: of a good single. You know, if you look like
- 20:46Speaker 1: Silicon Valley or these shows, they're kind of like running.
- 20:49Speaker 1: They're like going around in the world and they're sneaking
- 20:51Speaker 1: in out of places. Enthusiasm single overplay, Yeah, exactly. It's
- 20:56Speaker 1: like you're just following you a fly on the wall
- 20:58Speaker 1: of his life. So that's that's the main difference. Yeah,
- 21:03Speaker 1: but it's a big deal for you. It's a big deal, man.
- 21:05Speaker 1: It's probably the biggest deal of my career so far.
- 21:08Speaker 1: It's a it's a pretty congratulate, very excited. I'm more
- 21:11Speaker 1: excited to be on the Meat Eater podcast though. The
- 21:14Speaker 1: dollar the times cool. This is zero cam. That's not true.
- 21:21Speaker 1: That's not true. We have all these cameras that we
- 21:23Speaker 1: don't use. It are using these cameras right now, right now,
- 21:26Speaker 1: zero cam, zero cam. Today. We're working on it. And
- 21:29Speaker 1: but we are going to use a laugh track. Of course.
- 21:31Speaker 1: I actually do have a giant bank of laugh tracks.
- 21:33Speaker 1: I have no idea what but for for for me,
- 21:36Speaker 1: please I would like you to pull from specifically from
- 21:40Speaker 1: the mash one. Okay, got it, that's a great laugh track.
- 21:44Speaker 1: Tell me about how you came to be in the world. Uh,
- 21:48Speaker 1: in the world of hunting. No, no, no, the world,
- 21:50Speaker 1: the world. Oh yeah. So my wife always cracks me
- 21:53Speaker 1: um because she has friends who were from Iran. Yeah,
- 21:57Speaker 1: and doesn't like me to say I Ran, I Ran.
- 22:00Speaker 1: What do you How do you run? I say Iran?
- 22:02Speaker 1: Do you correct people? No? No, I don't care. I
- 22:05Speaker 1: don't really care. I think it's weird when people say
- 22:08Speaker 1: Persian because I'm like, yo, that empire is gone, not
- 22:12Speaker 1: trying to hold on like Turkish people aren't. You don't describe,
- 22:19Speaker 1: so I go I I don't know. I think Persian
- 22:21Speaker 1: is how they like to refer to the culture. But
- 22:23Speaker 1: I Irani and American more American Iranian. But where were
- 22:26Speaker 1: you born? I was born in New York. I was
- 22:29Speaker 1: born New York. My parents, though, are both from Iran.
- 22:31Speaker 1: And I go back like my twenty three and me
- 22:35Speaker 1: like it's sent back just like a picture of like,
- 22:38Speaker 1: you know, homeless. It was like your fucking Persian. Yeah.
- 22:41Speaker 1: So when did they moved here? Did they move here
- 22:44Speaker 1: after the revolution or just before they saw the writing
- 22:46Speaker 1: on the wall a little bit? And you don't bounce
- 22:49Speaker 1: back and forth, no, man, But both yourn. I'm sorry
- 22:52Speaker 1: both of my porn star parents. Now, yeah, but we're
- 22:58Speaker 1: Iranian Jews, so you know, the Islamic Republic is not
- 23:03Speaker 1: saw the writing on the wall. This was like like
- 23:06Speaker 1: getting out of Germany. Yeah, exactly. So um so Irani
- 23:12Speaker 1: and Jews and they moved to New York and they're
- 23:15Speaker 1: you know, kind of a rare breed. But um uh yeah.
- 23:19Speaker 1: I grew up in a very very very Jewish neighborhood
- 23:23Speaker 1: outside of Long Island, and guns and hunting were like,
- 23:27Speaker 1: I mean, kryptonite. I'm sure growing up from the New
- 23:32Speaker 1: York into things, I don't know. But would that be
- 23:34Speaker 1: true from the from the mother country into things as well?
- 23:37Speaker 1: I don't from the Jewish kind of things. It is
- 23:40Speaker 1: for sure. Hunting is is not a thing. Um it's
- 23:44Speaker 1: I mean, first of all, just kosher wise, it's not
- 23:46Speaker 1: kosher to eat game. No, it's not true to hunted game. Yeah,
- 23:50Speaker 1: but you know what you could do? You know what
- 23:52Speaker 1: the you know what the um yeah, yeah, okay. I
- 23:58Speaker 1: asked the guy at hobbad House one time how you
- 24:00Speaker 1: could go about having kosher wild game, and he kicked
- 24:03Speaker 1: it around and got back to me, and he felt,
- 24:05Speaker 1: if you caught a deer in the net, yeah, and
- 24:08Speaker 1: then slit its throat and then brought it to the
- 24:10Speaker 1: kosher slaughter and he split its throat and checked it
- 24:14Speaker 1: for TV and other diseases. He felt that it could
- 24:18Speaker 1: be kosher wild game, but he couldn't see another way
- 24:21Speaker 1: of going about it. And then you run into all
- 24:23Speaker 1: these regulatory issues because you can't catch them in nets
- 24:27Speaker 1: and drive them home and stuff. Now you gotta get
- 24:29Speaker 1: like a net gun. Well, I mean just you just
- 24:31Speaker 1: get in trouble too if you tell him like, well,
- 24:33Speaker 1: I caught it a net. Yeah. Yeah, No, I wanted
- 24:36Speaker 1: me to correct you there. No, it's all good, I mean,
- 24:38Speaker 1: but I gotta ask. I gotta ask nothing before you
- 24:41Speaker 1: get to this. Just one last quick question before the
- 24:43Speaker 1: hunting thing at that time, like when your parents emigrated, yeah,
- 24:49Speaker 1: was for people for for Jews from Iran? Would it
- 24:54Speaker 1: have been like should we go to Israel or the US? Well,
- 24:57Speaker 1: was that like a toss up? That was absolutely the
- 25:00Speaker 1: toss up. And they actually went to Israel first, and
- 25:03Speaker 1: then they decided. I think my mom told me they
- 25:06Speaker 1: went to like uh, it was like a circumcision of
- 25:09Speaker 1: like one of their friends kids and like and like
- 25:12Speaker 1: someone like raised the baby and was like this will
- 25:14Speaker 1: be the next great general of our country. And my
- 25:17Speaker 1: mom was like this ship for my kids. I'm going
- 25:22Speaker 1: along island she wanted to. Yeah, yeah, yeah, So you know,
- 25:28Speaker 1: we were in Sparta and we were all like Hellenic.
- 25:30Speaker 1: She was like, get that, let's go back to the arts,
- 25:36Speaker 1: which is fun. And it's another thing. It's interesting though
- 25:39Speaker 1: because in America, Jews in general, I feel like, are
- 25:42Speaker 1: very uh anti gun Karen, would you jump on this
- 25:46Speaker 1: with me, even though you told me your dad was
- 25:47Speaker 1: like a closet gun guy. Yeah, um, yeah, but you
- 25:51Speaker 1: don't see, you know, I feel like it's not very
- 25:54Speaker 1: just living amongst my friends in New York or l A.
- 25:58Speaker 1: And like the ones that find out that I have
- 25:59Speaker 1: a gun, they lose their fucking minds. Um. Which is
- 26:03Speaker 1: interesting because in Israel, I think there's more gun ownership
- 26:05Speaker 1: than like any other country. Yeah, I would think that.
- 26:07Speaker 1: I don't. I don't, I don't, I don't. I shouldn't
- 26:09Speaker 1: even speculate, but I could imagine there's more of a
- 26:12Speaker 1: in Israel. There's more of a you know, more of
- 26:15Speaker 1: a culture of self defense. Absolutely absolutely, um, but yeah,
- 26:19Speaker 1: I mean we I feel like the Jews lost that
- 26:21Speaker 1: when they came to America. So anyway, I grew up
- 26:23Speaker 1: in that this. I've never seen a gun before, never
- 26:27Speaker 1: thought about having a gun before. And then I basically
- 26:32Speaker 1: I went to college and I became friends with this
- 26:36Speaker 1: guy Mohanned al Humadi. Hey mo um, who is the
- 26:43Speaker 1: rocky Muslim guy? Where'd you go to college? Johns Hopkins? Okay,
- 26:48Speaker 1: where's that? It's in Baltimore, Baltimore. Um, oh dude, it's
- 26:52Speaker 1: a big medical school, it is. I was pre mad doctor. Yeah.
- 26:57Speaker 1: Um but yeah, so me and me, and I was
- 27:00Speaker 1: just gonna say by it, he was a hunter. He
- 27:02Speaker 1: was a hunter. He grew up and he grew up
- 27:04Speaker 1: in upstate New York and only his parents immigrated from
- 27:07Speaker 1: Iraq after like the Irani Rock War, so literally a
- 27:11Speaker 1: war between my country and his country. He and his
- 27:15Speaker 1: family emigrated. She was just primed. Seriously, you couldn't have
- 27:19Speaker 1: designed two greater enemies like Shakespearean and uh so we
- 27:26Speaker 1: uh we became buds and uh it's funny we had
- 27:30Speaker 1: we didn't have a lot of common, but I think
- 27:32Speaker 1: it's college. So like it was like, yeah, yeah, do
- 27:34Speaker 1: you smoke weed? I spoke let's be friends. So differences
- 27:39Speaker 1: behind um. But he told me he was a hunter
- 27:43Speaker 1: and I was like, that's fucking crazy. Why do you
- 27:46Speaker 1: do that? There's supermarkets and uh. He was just telling
- 27:50Speaker 1: me that he did, and I still was not There
- 27:53Speaker 1: was no bone in my body that was like, I
- 27:56Speaker 1: want to try this, but I want to talk about
- 27:58Speaker 1: your body for a second. What was his disposure was
- 28:01Speaker 1: it was his parents. So his dad was a surgeon
- 28:04Speaker 1: and he got a residency. You know, when you came
- 28:08Speaker 1: from overseas to to become a doctor in America, you
- 28:11Speaker 1: go to whatever city takes you. And he got a
- 28:13Speaker 1: residency in Olean, New York. Do you guys are familiar
- 28:17Speaker 1: with Olean, New York. It's about an hour and a
- 28:19Speaker 1: half south of Buffalo, and it's it's like it's a
- 28:23Speaker 1: it's hunting country. That's not far from where I grew up,
- 28:26Speaker 1: that's right near the Pennsylvania Absolutely. Absolutely. The first thing
- 28:30Speaker 1: you said today, Brodie Brodi, thanks for joining us. Yeah, well,
- 28:34Speaker 1: you know, it's hard to getting that word. I haven't
- 28:39Speaker 1: found that to be true. I don't think it's going
- 28:42Speaker 1: to experience. I'll ask you once in a while what
- 28:45Speaker 1: you think about about what we just said, Brodie's overwhelmed
- 28:50Speaker 1: right now because we're working on a on a book
- 28:52Speaker 1: project and Brodie's uh yeah, just moved in Montana and
- 28:56Speaker 1: he decided to move a couple of states and Brody's
- 28:59Speaker 1: moving right, No, So carry on. Oh, by the way,
- 29:05Speaker 1: I just finished your book in the plane over Yeah,
- 29:07Speaker 1: which one, the Mediator book? Fantastic, fantastic. Anyone who's listening.
- 29:12Speaker 1: You gotta get your hands on that book anyway, your
- 29:14Speaker 1: body Dr moh old Man lands and Olan, and you know,
- 29:20Speaker 1: it's very hard to live there and not pick up
- 29:22Speaker 1: hunting um that. But man, they must have thought that,
- 29:25Speaker 1: like they must have been to him, the local hunting guys. Yeah,
- 29:29Speaker 1: I'm super must have been, dude, come again now, Yeah,
- 29:32Speaker 1: making some assumptions about their character. He is, and he's
- 29:36Speaker 1: correct about absolutely correct. I'm not saying they wouldn't welcome him.
- 29:42Speaker 1: I just think there would have been pause. But from
- 29:46Speaker 1: where Okay. Yeah, here's the interesting thing though. As much
- 29:52Speaker 1: as they probably were like what the funk is this
- 29:55Speaker 1: Iraqi Muslim guy doing in our town, that Iraqi Muslim
- 29:58Speaker 1: guy was one of a few urgins in the town,
- 30:01Speaker 1: so they had no choice, Like he was helping all
- 30:04Speaker 1: their grandmothers and grandfathers and this and that he was
- 30:07Speaker 1: so as a result, I mean his family, which is
- 30:10Speaker 1: like I think he mostly lives there. We'll get to
- 30:13Speaker 1: that in a minute. But they became these kind of
- 30:15Speaker 1: ambassadors for Islam in this in this little town, which
- 30:20Speaker 1: is probably effective. Absolutely. I mean they you know, they
- 30:23Speaker 1: they I think they built or they donated to the
- 30:27Speaker 1: to the what's it called the y m c A.
- 30:29Speaker 1: They're like they it's like the doctor Adel al Humadi
- 30:33Speaker 1: m C. It's like a real mind fuck. But um,
- 30:36Speaker 1: they became they became hunters, and they got really and
- 30:39Speaker 1: he got really into it. So Moe grew up and
- 30:41Speaker 1: was a hunter and played ice hockey and all the
- 30:44Speaker 1: you know, all the things that you do over there.
- 30:45Speaker 1: Was he I don't mean to turn this into you
- 30:49Speaker 1: know what do they have mo out? Sometimes? Was was
- 30:52Speaker 1: he into um sort of like the history and the
- 30:58Speaker 1: culture of American hunting where he just he just liked
- 31:02Speaker 1: to go out. I mean, was he sort of like
- 31:03Speaker 1: a student of it. I think, well he's become one,
- 31:07Speaker 1: for sure, He's become one for sure. He did he
- 31:10Speaker 1: fish too, I mean green Lakes right there, Like I
- 31:13Speaker 1: don't think you know, he wasn't he wasn't a fisherman.
- 31:15Speaker 1: It was it was dear all deer all. Yeah. Yeah,
- 31:19Speaker 1: they had they had a little his dad bought land
- 31:24Speaker 1: in Cuba Lake, which is like right around there. And
- 31:26Speaker 1: it's like, so he's they've got like a little a
- 31:29Speaker 1: little mountain, a little hill that we go to every
- 31:32Speaker 1: year there. Yeah, yeah, yeah, it's awesome. Okay, so you
- 31:37Speaker 1: meet him. So I meet him, and I find it
- 31:38Speaker 1: and he's a hunter. We become we become close friends.
- 31:41Speaker 1: But again, keep the hunting away from me. He's like
- 31:43Speaker 1: showing me these pictures. I want to vomit, and then
- 31:46Speaker 1: you know that that's naught, that is naughty staff and
- 31:53Speaker 1: then we uh, you know. I moved to New York
- 31:56Speaker 1: to do comedy and I get into food. I become
- 31:58Speaker 1: the I just really started loving the the food world
- 32:02Speaker 1: in New York City, and I became a big food nerd.
- 32:04Speaker 1: And and and I read this book The Omnivore's Dilemma,
- 32:09Speaker 1: you know, this book, Michael Polo, And he had a
- 32:11Speaker 1: whole chapter about like I think he was the first
- 32:14Speaker 1: person who brought up he or you was the first
- 32:16Speaker 1: person who brought up like, hey, you got to start
- 32:18Speaker 1: thinking about this animal's life if you're gonna eat it.
- 32:21Speaker 1: And I was like, man, I never because he goes
- 32:23Speaker 1: on hunts pigs in California the exactly and he gets
- 32:26Speaker 1: disgusted by it and all that. But he's like, I
- 32:28Speaker 1: had to do it. And so I had this real
- 32:30Speaker 1: ethical dilemma of like, shit, I think I need to
- 32:31Speaker 1: kill an animal. So I called Moe and I was like,
- 32:33Speaker 1: I think I want to kill an animal. And he
- 32:36Speaker 1: was like, I've been waiting for this phone call, an
- 32:41Speaker 1: excuse to be alone with the jew and a gun.
- 32:43Speaker 1: Now I'm just kidding. So at this point, he was
- 32:47Speaker 1: in med school in Long Island and he was following
- 32:51Speaker 1: in his father's book following his becoming a surgeon. And
- 32:55Speaker 1: he was like, let's go goose hunting. You'll kill a goose.
- 33:00Speaker 1: And I was like, all right, cool, Yeah, I don't
- 33:01Speaker 1: want to kill a deer, and you know, go for
- 33:03Speaker 1: a smaller animal. So he's got the fucking you know,
- 33:07Speaker 1: he's got the canoe and he's got all the gear
- 33:09Speaker 1: and everything, and we're on Long Island and I know,
- 33:11Speaker 1: I don't think you've ever done an episode in Long Island.
- 33:13Speaker 1: Long Island Hunting I'll tell you why not because not
- 33:17Speaker 1: because we like haven't. Yeah, but I just haven't. I've
- 33:21Speaker 1: looked into a couple of It's a weird thing. I
- 33:23Speaker 1: should I should say not because we have it, not
- 33:24Speaker 1: because we you know, decided not to. Well, it's just
- 33:29Speaker 1: we just have it. I'll tell you. It's a weird
- 33:30Speaker 1: thing that I understand. I understand. It is a strange
- 33:34Speaker 1: thing though, because you so we go out in this
- 33:38Speaker 1: canoe to get to the sandbar where you're allowed to hunt. Okay,
- 33:42Speaker 1: I need a little more. Okay, you're we are in uh,
- 33:46Speaker 1: we're in the north shore of Long Island, Okay, Port Jefferson,
- 33:49Speaker 1: because like a waterfowl refuge or just just normal I don't.
- 33:54Speaker 1: I don't think so. I knew that we were allowed
- 33:56Speaker 1: to hunt there, and that's where we needed to get out,
- 33:57Speaker 1: and I don't know all the all the I'm not
- 34:00Speaker 1: in all the right hunting terms and stuff. You can
- 34:01Speaker 1: now it's not like some dudes. You're not You're you're out.
- 34:05Speaker 1: I'm saying you're out, or anybody could go hunting. Yes, yes, yes,
- 34:08Speaker 1: absolutely absolutely, but you've gotta like take your boat and
- 34:12Speaker 1: go past all these homes to get to this area,
- 34:16Speaker 1: like there's you know, you're you're you're going past these
- 34:18Speaker 1: homes and this is where they're not friendly to hunters, okay,
- 34:22Speaker 1: And they suddenly see like a canoe going by and
- 34:25Speaker 1: you know, a Jew and a Muslim and Camma with
- 34:27Speaker 1: sucking guns and they're like, so we got we got
- 34:30Speaker 1: the fish. And wildlife was called on us all the
- 34:33Speaker 1: time constantly, and we'd have to show them and it
- 34:38Speaker 1: was always weird because you know, we're showing them our
- 34:39Speaker 1: I d s and his is like and mine is
- 34:43Speaker 1: like Dan like these weird names. They're like, what are
- 34:46Speaker 1: you boys doing? Not here? So anyway we go, we
- 34:52Speaker 1: set up these blinds and everybody starts quizzing you. He's like, oh,
- 34:54Speaker 1: so you're hunting. We'll tell me a little bit about that.
- 34:57Speaker 1: You just like fail the test absolutely, dude. I don't
- 35:00Speaker 1: even know. By the way, I had never shot. I
- 35:04Speaker 1: don't know. I know it's the one that's the one
- 35:06Speaker 1: that flies. I hadn't shot a gun, like, which was
- 35:10Speaker 1: dumb on his part. I think to make my first
- 35:12Speaker 1: shot be an animal, right, I don't know. So we
- 35:16Speaker 1: get out there and uh, he sets everything up and
- 35:19Speaker 1: he's like, you know, just relax, it's gonna be fine.
- 35:22Speaker 1: This and that and these geese, you know, a couple
- 35:26Speaker 1: couple of geese come in, which, by the way, this
- 35:28Speaker 1: is my decoy. Yeah, we had decoys out. I have
- 35:31Speaker 1: a bone to pick with duck hunting and goose hunting. Oh,
- 35:34Speaker 1: it's not gonna hurt my feelings. Go ahead. I mean,
- 35:36Speaker 1: I love it, but I'm not gonna be Okay, here's
- 35:39Speaker 1: my thing. Okay, turkey hunting, I understand. Here's I ethically
- 35:45Speaker 1: and more into that, because it's like you're luring in
- 35:48Speaker 1: like a horny dude, some horny dude who's like yeah,
- 35:53Speaker 1: it's like some alpha horny guy, and you're doing the
- 35:56Speaker 1: turkey call thing, which like translated would be like oh,
- 35:59Speaker 1: Mr Terry. And then you know, Taylor, the frat boy
- 36:02Speaker 1: Turkey is like sauntering in like boom happy Thanksgiving, right
- 36:05Speaker 1: he deserves like he's like he's shallow. Yeah, alpha shall
- 36:10Speaker 1: like to bravado for his own good. I'm feeling it.
- 36:13Speaker 1: But then I never knew why I liked hunting turkey
- 36:15Speaker 1: so much. But I think it's just this like form
- 36:17Speaker 1: of justice that I that I exact upon cocky mail
- 36:20Speaker 1: turkeys exactly it's like all the bullies that used to
- 36:23Speaker 1: get the girls in front of me, Like yeah, kind
- 36:25Speaker 1: of people who would come and try to take my
- 36:27Speaker 1: daughter out school exactly. Um. But then like I feel
- 36:31Speaker 1: like duck hunting is like the opposite because like they're
- 36:33Speaker 1: just hungry and you're you're going for the wayward like
- 36:36Speaker 1: loser ducks who don't have a crew, and they see
- 36:39Speaker 1: these ducks down there and the call the turn of
- 36:41Speaker 1: the duck call or whatever is translated. It's like, hey,
- 36:44Speaker 1: come here, dude, We've got PlayStation. It's funny. Here, come
- 36:46Speaker 1: hang out. And then you're killing like this nerdy like
- 36:50Speaker 1: you're killing the middle school version of me basically. So anyway,
- 36:54Speaker 1: the goose comes and that that's the bone to make.
- 36:58Speaker 1: Anyway goose comes and I get up, I shoot and
- 37:04Speaker 1: and there was like three of them in a row
- 37:06Speaker 1: and one of them goes down and can I please Yeah?
- 37:11Speaker 1: During like during all the set up, Yeah, are you
- 37:15Speaker 1: getting the feeling from your body? Are you? Like, Man,
- 37:17Speaker 1: this guy has this dialed and he's like it's going
- 37:21Speaker 1: to be good. Here's the thing. Were you guys just
- 37:23Speaker 1: like Wow, here comes the goose. You know, I'm trying
- 37:26Speaker 1: to get like said, you know what, I mean, you
- 37:28Speaker 1: know what the expectations. I'm gonna tell you it's a
- 37:30Speaker 1: little bit of both, because I don't think he'd ever
- 37:31Speaker 1: done it either. But he had all he's one of
- 37:33Speaker 1: those gear guys, like he's got all the gear. He's
- 37:35Speaker 1: very organized, and he's also very like annoyingly like gun
- 37:40Speaker 1: safety guy, which is good. I don't know that that's no.
- 37:43Speaker 1: I realized it was good, but I hate it in
- 37:45Speaker 1: the beginning. Now I'm like that with people that I
- 37:47Speaker 1: go hunting with. But like, he was very like, dude,
- 37:50Speaker 1: don't make sure, just do not, like he doesn't want
- 37:54Speaker 1: to be shot, I know, what a weirdo. And but
- 37:57Speaker 1: he's like very like, you know, he's very by the
- 37:59Speaker 1: book and like that, and we have it all out.
- 38:02Speaker 1: But I don't think he expected them to actually come in,
- 38:05Speaker 1: you know, and they come in and we get pretty
- 38:07Speaker 1: freaking excited. I mean, I you know, my I get
- 38:09Speaker 1: pretty excited. You're not thinking death at this point. You're
- 38:12Speaker 1: thinking you know, it's like your little reptile brain kicks
- 38:15Speaker 1: in and you're like, oh, this is gonna be awesome.
- 38:18Speaker 1: So you take your three shots. I take my three
- 38:21Speaker 1: shots and the guy goes down. Uh, And I for
- 38:25Speaker 1: some reason thought you shoot them and they die in
- 38:29Speaker 1: the air, and that's it. Like I didn't expect. You know,
- 38:33Speaker 1: you watch the you know you watch Steve Ronnella, and
- 38:36Speaker 1: that's how he does it. But I know, I think
- 38:40Speaker 1: there's the thing people expect a binary dude. I expected that,
- 38:44Speaker 1: just like there's like a miss or death. The first
- 38:47Speaker 1: time I took my wife scroll hunting, she wasn't. She
- 38:49Speaker 1: had thought, I'll miss or it will die instantaneously, and
- 38:53Speaker 1: didn't think about the middle ground. There was a male ground.
- 38:58Speaker 1: So I knew that I had shot him in in
- 39:01Speaker 1: the wing and in the foot. I think, okay, because
- 39:06Speaker 1: his the wing looked like a fucking open door of
- 39:09Speaker 1: a DeLorean. And and then he couldn't swim in a
- 39:13Speaker 1: straight line, so I figured one of his feet was
- 39:16Speaker 1: and I like almost vomited, it was so viscerally it was.
- 39:21Speaker 1: It was awful. So then I shot him again and
- 39:25Speaker 1: his you know, his neck went down, his head went down.
- 39:29Speaker 1: And then we take the canoe out to it. We
- 39:31Speaker 1: didn't have a dog or anything, and I pick up
- 39:34Speaker 1: this the goose neck, and the goose neck is like
- 39:39Speaker 1: pulsating in my hand. Didn't then have you grabbed him
- 39:43Speaker 1: by the neck. When he grabbed him by the neck,
- 39:45Speaker 1: they did then have I couldn't do it, man. I
- 39:47Speaker 1: was like, oh my god, dude, it's still live. It's
- 39:49Speaker 1: still alive. And then he took it and like pretty
- 39:51Speaker 1: ma internet, like he swung it like there was nothing.
- 39:53Speaker 1: But yeah, man, it was so awful. And you know,
- 39:57Speaker 1: then I was like, you know, okay, I get to
- 39:59Speaker 1: do this thing where you felt guilt. I felt disgusted.
- 40:03Speaker 1: I felt discussed with yourself. I felt discussed with myself.
- 40:07Speaker 1: I also was like, you know, it was one of
- 40:08Speaker 1: those things where you ever when you go hunting with
- 40:10Speaker 1: a hunter and to them, like he started like he
- 40:14Speaker 1: was so excited. He was like you did it, man,
- 40:15Speaker 1: good for you. And I'm just like I was not
- 40:18Speaker 1: in that headstand, man. I was not in that head
- 40:21Speaker 1: space at all. I was like, I want to like
- 40:22Speaker 1: cry in the corner of the were maybe four hours
- 40:25Speaker 1: away from that. Yeah, honestly, not even dude. I this
- 40:29Speaker 1: day I went, I I so we we brought it
- 40:33Speaker 1: in and I butchered it. First of all, I wanted
- 40:35Speaker 1: to try the liver because I was like, fog raw,
- 40:36Speaker 1: it's gonna be like far gray. It was not like
- 40:38Speaker 1: because I guess they're you know, they're not force fed.
- 40:41Speaker 1: And then I couldn't this is this is gonna sound awful,
- 40:44Speaker 1: but you know, the smell of the meat was so
- 40:48Speaker 1: like I I couldn't eat it. It was the smell
- 40:52Speaker 1: the guts are the smell of the meat. The meat. Man.
- 40:55Speaker 1: I think it was just I had this whole visceral
- 40:58Speaker 1: thing going on where everything was just associated. Yeah, it
- 41:01Speaker 1: was this. Everything reminded me of the experience and it
- 41:03Speaker 1: just like made me so disgusted that I just couldn't
- 41:07Speaker 1: do it. And then I felt guilty about how I
- 41:08Speaker 1: couldn't eat the food. I mean, it was a real awful,
- 41:10Speaker 1: awful experience. What happened to it? Honestly, I put, well,
- 41:16Speaker 1: I like when you try to cook at how I
- 41:20Speaker 1: tried to Well. I brought it to New York City.
- 41:23Speaker 1: I was living in the city, and I had it
- 41:25Speaker 1: in the freezer for a long time, and I just
- 41:27Speaker 1: had that I had the breast. He just breasted them
- 41:29Speaker 1: out um, and I just I eventually I was like,
- 41:33Speaker 1: I don't think I can do this. And I even
- 41:36Speaker 1: just smell, I'm not like cooking it just man, I
- 41:38Speaker 1: couldn't even. I know, I know it sounds like I
- 41:40Speaker 1: sound like a little wiss And don't worry, I've eaten.
- 41:43Speaker 1: I've eaten the food since then. But I like, I
- 41:46Speaker 1: felt guilty, I felt gross, and I just like I
- 41:49Speaker 1: put I threw them into the I threw them into
- 41:51Speaker 1: the Hudson. Yeah. I was like, I can't do it.
- 41:55Speaker 1: Hopefully someone some fish will or something. I I it was,
- 41:58Speaker 1: I just couldn't do it. It was up, well, how
- 42:00Speaker 1: did you not? Why would that have not been the
- 42:03Speaker 1: last time you went out? Like? How did you recover
- 42:06Speaker 1: from that enough to go try again? It was mine
- 42:12Speaker 1: over Matt. I think that Philosophically, I still was like,
- 42:15Speaker 1: this is it has to be done. I have to
- 42:19Speaker 1: be able to do this honestly, and I and uh.
- 42:23Speaker 1: And then the next time we went out, it was
- 42:25Speaker 1: we went hunting for pheasants and I got a pheasant
- 42:30Speaker 1: and where'd you guys go? Then we went in Long
- 42:32Speaker 1: Island again and got the fucking thing? We got called
- 42:35Speaker 1: on seriously, did you can make friends with the game wardens?
- 42:44Speaker 1: They hated like you guys again? Um, But at that
- 42:48Speaker 1: point I was like, so this, so I get a pheasant,
- 42:53Speaker 1: I killed a pheasant and then Mo takes it again.
- 42:55Speaker 1: It all excited and broly, I'm a little less on
- 42:58Speaker 1: the wing. Yeah, this time I got to get shot. Yeah,
- 43:04Speaker 1: thank god. I was like, please, I can't deal with
- 43:06Speaker 1: do Lorian wing again. Knocked out of the sky. Um.
- 43:10Speaker 1: And then Mos like, good job. He takes it and
- 43:11Speaker 1: like just puts it in my in my vest the
- 43:15Speaker 1: game pouch, and you know, the thing is still in
- 43:18Speaker 1: the throes of in his death throes. It's still like
- 43:20Speaker 1: twitching a little bit and having that little twitch on
- 43:23Speaker 1: my back. Oh man, it was. It was intense. Oh
- 43:29Speaker 1: I hated it so much. But anyway, does everything seemed
- 43:32Speaker 1: to twitch pulic? I can't Anyway. I was like, okay,
- 43:37Speaker 1: I'm gonna I'm gonna eat this guy and give him
- 43:39Speaker 1: a good life. And I made a I made a
- 43:42Speaker 1: pheasant ragou um. I took a recipe from the Babbo Cookbook,
- 43:47Speaker 1: which is a great cookbook. I made a peasant ragout.
- 43:49Speaker 1: I made yoki from scratch, and dude, it was unbelievable.
- 43:53Speaker 1: And I was like, okay, now we're talking. So you
- 43:56Speaker 1: didn't have the same reaction to the meat, Like it
- 43:58Speaker 1: just didn't happen. It didn't happen. Do you think it
- 44:01Speaker 1: was because it's more like a chicken. I think it's
- 44:03Speaker 1: because it died quick. No, I think I think it
- 44:05Speaker 1: was because it died quick. I think it was because
- 44:07Speaker 1: it wasn't. It wasn't my first time. You know, it's like,
- 44:12Speaker 1: bat let's bring it back to sex. Your first time,
- 44:14Speaker 1: it's like not, it's not the most memorable experience, and
- 44:16Speaker 1: then it gets better and better. Babo. That's Battali, that
- 44:20Speaker 1: is battality. You know. I was surprised to see that
- 44:22Speaker 1: you you worked for a time, You did something or
- 44:24Speaker 1: another at the Spot of Pig. Yeah, just close. I
- 44:27Speaker 1: was an intern at the Spot of Pig. Yeah, for
- 44:29Speaker 1: for the for a whole summer. Um, yeah, I did it.
- 44:32Speaker 1: Just closed, Babo. And I mean, do you know battalic
- 44:35Speaker 1: because he lives in Michigan now, doesn't he He has
- 44:37Speaker 1: a place of traver. He's like he's quarantined himself to Michigan.
- 44:40Speaker 1: Never met him, but we used to. You know, I've
- 44:41Speaker 1: been in Spotted Pig for a while and I used
- 44:43Speaker 1: to hang out with April Bloomfield. I love her. She's great. Yeah,
- 44:47Speaker 1: it's a bummer, man. It was such it was so depressing,
- 44:52Speaker 1: but you know, I mean they had a it's tough
- 44:54Speaker 1: to bounce back from from that stuff. Um, but yeah,
- 44:59Speaker 1: may y goo. I made a ragou, a pheasant ragu
- 45:02Speaker 1: and it was awesome. And then eventually I thought, I was,
- 45:07Speaker 1: you know, ready for deer and that is a different
- 45:10Speaker 1: experience too. Man Long Island now Long Island, No, yeah, long,
- 45:16Speaker 1: But we had a photographer that hunted deer on Long Island. Yeah. Yeah,
- 45:20Speaker 1: there's deer in Suffolk County. Um, but no, this was
- 45:24Speaker 1: up in Mohan Ed's land in Cuba Lake. So Mo
- 45:29Speaker 1: ended up becoming a surgeon in the same hospital as
- 45:31Speaker 1: Dad was, and he lives up there now in that
- 45:34Speaker 1: same in only in New York. So uh. I went
- 45:37Speaker 1: up to him and you know, first time, I remember
- 45:41Speaker 1: in your book you talked about the first time you
- 45:42Speaker 1: missed a deer, which my story was like it was,
- 45:45Speaker 1: I was, you know, in the tree stand and I
- 45:48Speaker 1: finally see this. I'm so excited and you know, I
- 45:51Speaker 1: finally see this buck. And I'm excited to like prove
- 45:54Speaker 1: myself to like my buddy and his buddies. His buddies
- 45:56Speaker 1: are like it's like me Mo, and like his state
- 45:58Speaker 1: Trooper buddy and the State Trooper buddies buddy. It's like
- 46:02Speaker 1: this the ragtag group. And I see this big buck
- 46:06Speaker 1: and he was priming me for just take a doe
- 46:09Speaker 1: to day and I'm like, oh my god, I can
- 46:11Speaker 1: do this, and I like aim and I can't see
- 46:13Speaker 1: the guy. I'm like, what the fun was your hand
- 46:15Speaker 1: when your hand open like that? Why is my hand open?
- 46:19Speaker 1: At least do like a little trigger thing. No, I
- 46:21Speaker 1: have it off the trigger until until I'm ready to
- 46:24Speaker 1: go hunter safety man. I was just not a convincing
- 46:28Speaker 1: you know. I got the gun ready to go and uh,
- 46:34Speaker 1: I like three times the guys like just kind of
- 46:36Speaker 1: sauntering off, and eventually I realized that I could find
- 46:39Speaker 1: the scope. I forgot to take the fucking cover off
- 46:42Speaker 1: of the scope and he just got away. Um. But
- 46:46Speaker 1: then the second time I went out, which is the
- 46:48Speaker 1: year after I that was my season. That was that opportunity. Yeah.
- 46:55Speaker 1: And then I went back the next year and went
- 46:58Speaker 1: out with with shotgun, you know, the slug, and I
- 47:02Speaker 1: saw a little guy come through and my I mean,
- 47:05Speaker 1: your heart just beats like insand it still does. I
- 47:08Speaker 1: mean I've killed like probably sixty or not still yeah. Um,
- 47:12Speaker 1: but yeah, and then I shot him. He jumped and
- 47:18Speaker 1: then you know, ran a little ways and then we
- 47:20Speaker 1: went and got him, and dude, that was a fucking
- 47:23Speaker 1: I like started crying and ship and and again MO
- 47:27Speaker 1: was like smile, I'm like, give me a moment. Um. Yeah,
- 47:35Speaker 1: but then I went to town. Man I started making
- 47:38Speaker 1: so much food, like amazing, de Yeah, so how how
- 47:42Speaker 1: are you handling the um? You're getting your process up
- 47:46Speaker 1: where you are just bring a package meat back to
- 47:48Speaker 1: your an apartment. Yeah. I got a quick question before
- 47:51Speaker 1: we get to um cooking dear meat. But did you
- 47:54Speaker 1: find it odd because you started hunting as an adult,
- 47:57Speaker 1: So did you find it odd that there was such
- 48:00Speaker 1: emotion and like the excitement like the buck fever you know,
- 48:04Speaker 1: as you probably know what you know I did because
- 48:06Speaker 1: he he was explaining buck fever to me and I'm like, okay, yeah,
- 48:10Speaker 1: I'm pretty good in high stress situations. I'll be okay,
- 48:13Speaker 1: but my hands were shaking, Dude. I it was very
- 48:16Speaker 1: very hard to concentrate. It's really weird. Um, and you
- 48:21Speaker 1: so you're good in high stress situations? Me like performing, Yeah,
- 48:24Speaker 1: I'm good at performing, or like I think it'd be
- 48:27Speaker 1: good at like like if I get into a car
- 48:28Speaker 1: accident or something like, I'm pretty relaxed. I'm not like,
- 48:31Speaker 1: I don't get frantic, you know what I mean. But
- 48:33Speaker 1: I got pretty fucking frantic when I saw this guy. Um,
- 48:37Speaker 1: because there's a lot of things. My biggest fear was like, again,
- 48:42Speaker 1: I don't want to enter this guy and then I
- 48:44Speaker 1: have to like watch him, you know, you know, or
- 48:48Speaker 1: like I can't I don't find it. There was one
- 48:50Speaker 1: time when I shot a deer and he and he
- 48:51Speaker 1: went off into the woods and we couldn't find him
- 48:53Speaker 1: for like twenty minutes, and it was it was twenty
- 48:57Speaker 1: minutes after we started coming down. No, I don't, well,
- 49:00Speaker 1: the thing is this twenty minutes And I freaked the
- 49:02Speaker 1: funk out because the other ones that I had gotten
- 49:05Speaker 1: were like, you know, they didn't go very far. Pretty
- 49:07Speaker 1: good shot, Steve, Yeah, I say, there's it can get
- 49:10Speaker 1: a lot worse than twenty minutes. I know, I know. No,
- 49:13Speaker 1: I'm a pretty good shot, but it was and it
- 49:15Speaker 1: was close, he was close, but he just went into
- 49:16Speaker 1: a bunch of thick brush. And that's long enough for
- 49:19Speaker 1: you to think the worst dude, I was fucking I
- 49:23Speaker 1: was not in a good place. And again it's like
- 49:26Speaker 1: that wasn't It's that's an It's an interesting thing because
- 49:29Speaker 1: I wonder if it's like if it's a little bit
- 49:32Speaker 1: of it is, Yes, obviously you don't want this this
- 49:35Speaker 1: guy to be in pain, but also I wonder if
- 49:37Speaker 1: it's just a little bit of your cave madness of like,
- 49:39Speaker 1: oh my god, I just lost that on all this food. Um.
- 49:41Speaker 1: Oh yeah, I don't. I don't know that it Yeah,
- 49:45Speaker 1: the cave madness. I think there's a definite thing is
- 49:47Speaker 1: that you wanted it, like you wanted it bad enough
- 49:52Speaker 1: to try to kill it and then it gets away.
- 49:55Speaker 1: Besides the oh, man, I'm causing suffering to something, there's
- 49:58Speaker 1: definitely the but I want it, Yeah, there is. It
- 50:01Speaker 1: was mine, Yeah, I supposed to be mine. I want
- 50:03Speaker 1: in my hand now the thing I thought I had
- 50:06Speaker 1: and I don't have it. And that's a part of it.
- 50:09Speaker 1: But the suffering part, man, that that's why I'm actually
- 50:13Speaker 1: it's again in your book. I think it was one
- 50:15Speaker 1: of your dad's buddies who was like anti uh um,
- 50:20Speaker 1: like using a bow. Eugene. Yeah, I I I sort
- 50:25Speaker 1: of feel I feel the same way, like either with
- 50:27Speaker 1: a bow or like a muzzleloader, like anything that makes
- 50:31Speaker 1: it a little harder for us, unless you you should,
- 50:34Speaker 1: you should have to take a test that shows that
- 50:36Speaker 1: you're extremely proficient in those instruments. In some states you do,
- 50:40Speaker 1: do you. I can't think of any state that has
- 50:41Speaker 1: a firearm proficiency test archery archery proficiency tests in the Mania.
- 50:47Speaker 1: You know, you get people all riled up the many
- 50:49Speaker 1: you say that I know you that you should regulate something. No, no,
- 50:53Speaker 1: not that, And I was just say the minute you
- 50:54Speaker 1: get into like well the animals, most software more with archery,
- 50:58Speaker 1: you know, there's it's kind of thing where anyone sort
- 51:01Speaker 1: of driving a point is going to find some study
- 51:05Speaker 1: that reinforces their perspective about what's painful, what's not painful,
- 51:12Speaker 1: what's fast, what's not fast? You mean, I also just
- 51:14Speaker 1: think that, well, look, just accuracy wise, a Leopold's scope
- 51:19Speaker 1: is gonna probably get you to the point you want
- 51:22Speaker 1: to get, you know, at at the same distance then
- 51:28Speaker 1: you know, just looking through your bow. Is that a
- 51:31Speaker 1: simple way to Is that an awful way? Well? Obviously, um, yeah, man,
- 51:38Speaker 1: if you randomly selected ten Americans, yeah, and they had
- 51:43Speaker 1: to kill deer and your goal was to have these
- 51:46Speaker 1: randomly selected individuals kill these deer quickly. The thing to
- 51:50Speaker 1: do would be to give them a scoped rifle, right,
- 51:55Speaker 1: But just there's it's there's a lot less you need
- 51:59Speaker 1: to know. Yeah, to perform at like a proficient level
- 52:03Speaker 1: at short distance. Yeah. Absolutely. I've seen people shoot a
- 52:06Speaker 1: firearm only five or six times in their life and
- 52:12Speaker 1: then successfully kill a deer at close distance. You're not
- 52:16Speaker 1: going to get that, Yeah, absolutely. You can get it
- 52:19Speaker 1: with a cross bowl with a little bit harder, but yeah,
- 52:22Speaker 1: you're just not gonna get it with the bowl. Yeah.
- 52:24Speaker 1: There's so much more to learn and so many more
- 52:26Speaker 1: things that can go wrong if you can. More power
- 52:28Speaker 1: to you, But I just think that the you should
- 52:30Speaker 1: respect that you know, the skill level that you need
- 52:33Speaker 1: to have for that thing, because man, it must suck
- 52:36Speaker 1: to be a deer that just gets winged by a
- 52:39Speaker 1: you know, in the leg and then he's fucked for
- 52:41Speaker 1: the whole. Yeah, it would seem so um Yeah. But
- 52:47Speaker 1: then so it's funny because then I started really getting
- 52:50Speaker 1: into hunting, and uh started looking for content on hunting,
- 52:55Speaker 1: which is kind of when I discovered you, because all
- 52:57Speaker 1: the content that search look like for you, I'll tell
- 52:59Speaker 1: you would It looked like I would go on YouTube
- 53:02Speaker 1: and I would type in hunting videos or whatever, and
- 53:05Speaker 1: it was all really had it narrowed down, Look, dude,
- 53:09Speaker 1: it was it was all just like these guys would
- 53:12Speaker 1: just put up videos with like death metal in the background,
- 53:15Speaker 1: like shooting a deer, and then they'd show it again
- 53:17Speaker 1: and like slow motion like the head exploding, and I'm like, funk, man,
- 53:22Speaker 1: this is why isn't there? And then and then and
- 53:24Speaker 1: then here will come along dude, you'r And then I
- 53:28Speaker 1: started I was like, oh, this is like a thoughtful
- 53:30Speaker 1: dude who's smart, who was talking about hunting in the
- 53:34Speaker 1: in the way that that this is. This is the
- 53:36Speaker 1: blue collar bourdain right here. And I was so into it. Man.
- 53:40Speaker 1: I mean it's still is so into it, but it
- 53:43Speaker 1: kind of it gave me. It was it was this
- 53:45Speaker 1: moment of like, Okay, cool, I I there's a team
- 53:48Speaker 1: out there that I'm that I'm part of. It's not
- 53:50Speaker 1: just mo yelling yelling over dead carcasses, being like small
- 53:54Speaker 1: for the camera. Um, but yeah, man, I just in
- 54:00Speaker 1: general that I I don't think that I would ever
- 54:04Speaker 1: have met more people that I would never more people
- 54:09Speaker 1: from different backgrounds, from different political leanings. I probably it's
- 54:13Speaker 1: probably affected the way that I think about a lot
- 54:15Speaker 1: of politics. Uh, you know, than I ever did. It's
- 54:18Speaker 1: it's affective the way you think about politics. Absolutely, absolutely, Um,
- 54:23Speaker 1: beyond the obvious. Uh yeah, yeah, I think so. I
- 54:28Speaker 1: mean exposure to other people. I mean, look, dude, we go.
- 54:33Speaker 1: When I say the obvious, I mean, like the obviously
- 54:35Speaker 1: are like political subjects or political issues that are directly
- 54:40Speaker 1: related to hunting. Um, yes, more than that, but but yes,
- 54:45Speaker 1: let's go. Let's let's start there. Though. I mean, I
- 54:48Speaker 1: think that there's a lot of people that see, you know,
- 54:50Speaker 1: a school shooting, and they're like, no one should have guns.
- 54:53Speaker 1: And I'm like, guys, it's it's it's it's different, it's
- 54:56Speaker 1: a little more complicated. That's no, there's no fucking reason
- 54:58Speaker 1: any you know, I live in Hollywood. Yeah yeah, so
- 55:03Speaker 1: it's like there's no reason for you lived in Brooklyn.
- 55:05Speaker 1: So it's like the same ship. I mean, it's just
- 55:08Speaker 1: it's it's weird how how you just realize how ignorant
- 55:13Speaker 1: people are to the other side in general, and both ways,
- 55:17Speaker 1: absolutely both ways. And I think that it's funny because
- 55:21Speaker 1: I end up getting into a lot of these conversations
- 55:23Speaker 1: because people assume, oh, Jew from New York, he's gonna,
- 55:27Speaker 1: you know, he's going to have a certain way of thinking,
- 55:31Speaker 1: and uh, in a way I have to. There's a
- 55:34Speaker 1: lot of educating that needs to be done, especially in
- 55:37Speaker 1: l A like with environmentalists and stuff. When they're like,
- 55:39Speaker 1: how dare how could you kill? I'm like, more money
- 55:41Speaker 1: goes to you know, my my hunting license pays for
- 55:44Speaker 1: more you know, environmental preservation than then your little fucking
- 55:49Speaker 1: clipboard that you're collecting names outside the whole foods? Does
- 55:52Speaker 1: uh have you found have you found that that's effectively? No? Absolutely,
- 55:59Speaker 1: I think I think I like to see what you mean. Bro,
- 56:04Speaker 1: you're totally right. Uh, does being um your vocal about
- 56:10Speaker 1: hunting here? You know, I haven't been. I haven't been
- 56:13Speaker 1: very I've never like posted any pictures any hunting pictures.
- 56:17Speaker 1: You're talking about it right now, this is this is
- 56:19Speaker 1: me coming out at the closet right now. That's my
- 56:21Speaker 1: big coming out party. So you're active on social media? Yeah,
- 56:24Speaker 1: if you don't put anything about hunting or deer or
- 56:26Speaker 1: anything on social media? Rarely I I did some It's
- 56:30Speaker 1: funny we. Uh. I got a deer this year and
- 56:34Speaker 1: I wanted to do I wanted to cook up a
- 56:35Speaker 1: bunch of the organs. So I did a video of that.
- 56:37Speaker 1: But it was just like from the kitchen, like cooking,
- 56:39Speaker 1: cooking up the organs. It's funny. I fucking I messed
- 56:42Speaker 1: up one of your recipes. I most have read it wrong.
- 56:48Speaker 1: I was no, because I I took the balls off.
- 56:51Speaker 1: So here's the funny thing. I killed this deer this year.
- 56:53Speaker 1: And it's me Mo and Dean with anyone besides no,
- 56:58Speaker 1: absolutely not. It's me Mo and Dean the state trooper.
- 57:02Speaker 1: It's the three of us, okay, and which is it's
- 57:05Speaker 1: like the holy trendy. It's like a Muslim of jew
- 57:07Speaker 1: and a Christian walk into you know, public lands and uh,
- 57:13Speaker 1: you know they're both very like, yeah we did. And
- 57:15Speaker 1: I'm like, all right, guys, I need the balls off
- 57:17Speaker 1: of this off of this deer. And they're like what what.
- 57:20Speaker 1: I'm like, we're gonna eat the balls. And I've already
- 57:23Speaker 1: introduced Dean and a bunch of his like red nicky
- 57:25Speaker 1: friends to parts of the deer that they would never eat,
- 57:27Speaker 1: like heart, and you know which, they fucking love heart.
- 57:31Speaker 1: How heart is so easy to love by the way,
- 57:33Speaker 1: I think it's the most unsung hero of the you know,
- 57:37Speaker 1: of the or of the deer organs. It's delicious and
- 57:40Speaker 1: they know, I mean they you know, they don't like
- 57:43Speaker 1: it's delicious, And I think I the organs for me
- 57:46Speaker 1: are like my favorite part. I want, you know, the
- 57:49Speaker 1: organ's gotta eat him quickly. But once I was leaving
- 57:52Speaker 1: mos and going to New York City and I took
- 57:55Speaker 1: the heart and the liver and put them in you know,
- 57:57Speaker 1: like a little styrofoamp thing, and brought them to the
- 57:59Speaker 1: t S say, went through security, and like did they
- 58:03Speaker 1: take a look? Yeah, they take a look heart and
- 58:07Speaker 1: or it looks like a human heart. Like it's not
- 58:12Speaker 1: hurry out, man, I gotta go. I gotta get this
- 58:14Speaker 1: to exactly. This is not long after nine eleven and
- 58:21Speaker 1: there's an Iranian guy coming in with like human organs
- 58:24Speaker 1: and like, ammo on him. Oh man oh. And I
- 58:28Speaker 1: got busted once at JFK with my shotgun because I
- 58:31Speaker 1: didn't know they're not allowed to have to bring long
- 58:33Speaker 1: guns to I thought, I you license. I didn't know
- 58:36Speaker 1: you had a license to bring a long gun to. Yeah.
- 58:39Speaker 1: Through JFK. Whe Where were you storing the gun? I
- 58:43Speaker 1: was gonna so Mo where I've got some questions from Moe.
- 58:52Speaker 1: Was gonna listen. He's gonna be like, No, Mo, Mo
- 58:58Speaker 1: God bless mo birthday present, buys me a shotgun, a
- 59:03Speaker 1: beautiful but Nelly Monta feltro, and uh, I'm taking this
- 59:07Speaker 1: thing to Long I was like, I'll bring it to
- 59:10Speaker 1: my parents house in Long Island and then I'll go
- 59:12Speaker 1: in the city. But I land in JFK and they're like,
- 59:15Speaker 1: what is this. I'm like, it's my shotgun. Like you
- 59:17Speaker 1: can't have schocolate, I'm like and I'm like on high
- 59:20Speaker 1: and money. I'm like, actually, you're allowed to have long guns.
- 59:23Speaker 1: You don't need a license for a long gun. And
- 59:25Speaker 1: they're like, uh, in fucking New York City, you do.
- 59:27Speaker 1: And I'm like, oh no. And they bring these two
- 59:30Speaker 1: cops over and they're like, what the fun is going
- 59:33Speaker 1: on here? I'm like, I'm sorry, I didn't know that
- 59:35Speaker 1: you need a license. And you know, I look the
- 59:37Speaker 1: way I look. I look, you know, like a fucking
- 59:38Speaker 1: Woody Allen character, Like what are you doing with the
- 59:40Speaker 1: fucking shotgun? I'm like I'm a hunter, Like what are
- 59:44Speaker 1: you like the latest, like an old Jewish lady working
- 59:49Speaker 1: a delta. She's like, what are you doing this for?
- 59:51Speaker 1: What's the point? So now I have to like go
- 59:54Speaker 1: through the ethics of hunting with the fucking two Italian
- 59:57Speaker 1: cops and the old Jewish lady at delta. Oh, it's hilarious,
- 1:00:02Speaker 1: that's the thing they remember hearing about. Um. They're being
- 1:00:07Speaker 1: like legal challenges to that because a lot of people
- 1:00:09Speaker 1: it's very common for people to accidentally. You have some
- 1:00:12Speaker 1: guy lives in Pennsylvania, right, yeah, and he buys a
- 1:00:15Speaker 1: plane ticket out of JFK, connecting his whole damn life.
- 1:00:18Speaker 1: He's like drove to the airport and went off to
- 1:00:21Speaker 1: hunt deer at his uncle's house. And he shows up
- 1:00:23Speaker 1: the JFK just like another day at the office, and
- 1:00:27Speaker 1: all of a sudden, Yeah, they send it to a
- 1:00:29Speaker 1: very very common problem. Is it really? It's wild, man,
- 1:00:35Speaker 1: like I said, because it just would never a lot
- 1:00:37Speaker 1: of people would like never occurred to him that that
- 1:00:39Speaker 1: would be the case. And then it's not standardized. It's
- 1:00:43Speaker 1: like there's three airports it's like that. Yeah, yeah, yeah, Newark,
- 1:00:46Speaker 1: JFK and LaGuardia. It's tough traveling with a gun in
- 1:00:49Speaker 1: New York City. Um, are you worried about hunting screwing
- 1:00:53Speaker 1: you over? Man? Like being in you know, in the
- 1:00:55Speaker 1: in show business and everything, like the people will find
- 1:00:58Speaker 1: out that you're a hunter and in the work will
- 1:01:00Speaker 1: dry up. I don't, I don't know, man, I think
- 1:01:04Speaker 1: that I don't think so. I think that, you know,
- 1:01:10Speaker 1: God bless Joe Rogan in some ways, because I think
- 1:01:12Speaker 1: he opened it up a little and made it a
- 1:01:13Speaker 1: little more acceptable. And I think that also since I've
- 1:01:18Speaker 1: kind of had this like uh, this food career come
- 1:01:21Speaker 1: out of you know, come out of nowhere, I think
- 1:01:24Speaker 1: I get a little bit more of a pass. But
- 1:01:26Speaker 1: it's yeah, I definitely have some people who don't want
- 1:01:30Speaker 1: to come to my house anymore because they know that
- 1:01:31Speaker 1: I have guns there, you know. And then I have
- 1:01:35Speaker 1: to bring out the stats like well the house with
- 1:01:37Speaker 1: the swimming pools actually more data, and I'm like a
- 1:01:39Speaker 1: fucking you know, spinning off like NR A talking points um.
- 1:01:44Speaker 1: But it's uh, it's weird, man. I get it though,
- 1:01:48Speaker 1: because I used to be that. I used to be
- 1:01:50Speaker 1: these guys like anytime I hear someone had a gun,
- 1:01:52Speaker 1: I was like, oh, this is a different human being
- 1:01:54Speaker 1: from the type that I would like to interact with.
- 1:01:56Speaker 1: What did your parents think about your whole transformation? Uh?
- 1:02:01Speaker 1: Not thrilled? Not thrilled. Um. Have they eaten any of anything? No? No, no, no, no,
- 1:02:08Speaker 1: they wouldn't. They're also like they're still kosher, so they
- 1:02:11Speaker 1: would know, but they just think it's they just can't understand,
- 1:02:15Speaker 1: Like they just can't believe it. A little boy, we
- 1:02:20Speaker 1: didn't escape. How many for this to happen to him?
- 1:02:24Speaker 1: Do they are? They like like IROLLI half joke and irolly,
- 1:02:30Speaker 1: or they like legitimately pissed. They're not legitimately pissed, but
- 1:02:34Speaker 1: they're like, we don't want to hear about this. Just
- 1:02:35Speaker 1: leave that part of your life to yourself. What's their association?
- 1:02:41Speaker 1: I mean in their mind? What's what's they're like? I
- 1:02:45Speaker 1: think they freak out every time that they can imagine
- 1:02:47Speaker 1: me going out with a gun. What do they think about? Mo? Mo?
- 1:02:58Speaker 1: It's funny, mo? And is The funny part is that
- 1:03:01Speaker 1: most probably is the first Muslim friend that has ever entered,
- 1:03:04Speaker 1: you know, our family. I'm the first Jewish friend. Yeah,
- 1:03:07Speaker 1: And I'm the first Jewish guy who's entered his family.
- 1:03:09Speaker 1: His parents are my parents and my parents are like
- 1:03:12Speaker 1: his parents, Like there's such a love between our families.
- 1:03:16Speaker 1: And oh, you mean so they like each other. Oh,
- 1:03:19Speaker 1: my parents are like friends with most parents. Like I
- 1:03:21Speaker 1: tell you mean that they're I think they're very similar. Um, no,
- 1:03:25Speaker 1: they're they're very Uh well they're both. There are similar
- 1:03:29Speaker 1: in that they're they're all Middle Eastern. But you know,
- 1:03:31Speaker 1: there's the Jewish Muslim divide, which you don't find old school,
- 1:03:36Speaker 1: you know, Iranian Jews friends with any Muslims, any any
- 1:03:40Speaker 1: Arab Muslims. You just don't. And you don't find many
- 1:03:43Speaker 1: Arab Mulis Muslims who are friends with Iranian Jews. Uh.
- 1:03:47Speaker 1: And it's uh, you know, from the old school. I
- 1:03:49Speaker 1: think second generation it does so. But I'm you know,
- 1:03:52Speaker 1: I hate to get all like you know, uh, you know,
- 1:03:55Speaker 1: kumbaya about it, but I seriously think that in a
- 1:03:59Speaker 1: in a big way, hunting kind of brought us us together,
- 1:04:02Speaker 1: was like such a common ground that that made us
- 1:04:06Speaker 1: into best friends. That there's something about a hunting buddy. Man.
- 1:04:09Speaker 1: It's like you've you know, I'm not going to exaggerate
- 1:04:11Speaker 1: and say you've been to war together, but man, we've
- 1:04:14Speaker 1: done some fucked up ship that I've never done with
- 1:04:16Speaker 1: you know, other people like gutting a deer in the
- 1:04:20Speaker 1: dark and while you're freezing, and it's an accelerated courtship. Absolutely.
- 1:04:26Speaker 1: I want to ask you a couple of questions about um,
- 1:04:31Speaker 1: show business and career in sort of the way. Yeah,
- 1:04:35Speaker 1: personal life comes into it. You look at someone you mentioned,
- 1:04:40Speaker 1: Joe Rogan. Yeah, but uh, he's I don't want to
- 1:04:45Speaker 1: say he's untouchable, but everything he's done is organically built.
- 1:04:49Speaker 1: But he doesn't he doesn't need um. The normal gatekeepers
- 1:04:55Speaker 1: don't apply absolutely right, Like you look and be like who,
- 1:05:00Speaker 1: Like if someone's mad at him or someone's displeased with
- 1:05:04Speaker 1: something he's done, what do They can't stop him from
- 1:05:08Speaker 1: publishing his podcast. The UFC isn't gonna mess with him.
- 1:05:12Speaker 1: He's still gonna be a great stand up like he's
- 1:05:15Speaker 1: and it's not accidental. He just got himself. He's like
- 1:05:18Speaker 1: created a position for himself where it's like, come on,
- 1:05:21Speaker 1: come on, I don't give a ship like I'm doing
- 1:05:24Speaker 1: my thing. Um. People you know, like like like Chris Pratt,
- 1:05:28Speaker 1: like pretty outspoken hunter. Yeah, someone outspoken Hunter, but he
- 1:05:32Speaker 1: is like he depends on studios wanting to engage with him. Um,
- 1:05:37Speaker 1: So when I asked you like about that, do you
- 1:05:39Speaker 1: are you fearful, like, like in a serious way. Do
- 1:05:42Speaker 1: you ever think like or is it just sort of
- 1:05:45Speaker 1: a very uh Middle America perspective that Hollywood would blacklist
- 1:05:51Speaker 1: the hunting guy or is that is that ridiculous? I
- 1:05:54Speaker 1: don't think that. Look, if I walked into work with
- 1:05:58Speaker 1: a MAGA hat, that would probably happen. Fact, you know
- 1:06:01Speaker 1: what I mean. Hunt Absolutely, I think you can get
- 1:06:04Speaker 1: away with you can get away with hunting. Um, if
- 1:06:08Speaker 1: you're cooking, if you're a chef, think I think, but
- 1:06:15Speaker 1: I don't think that it's as it is stigmatized. But
- 1:06:18Speaker 1: it's not. I don't think it's enough of a to
- 1:06:21Speaker 1: be a deal breaker. And also, to tell you the truth,
- 1:06:24Speaker 1: now that I'm on this new show that's a NASCAR
- 1:06:26Speaker 1: show that has a Nascar audience, I have a feeling
- 1:06:29Speaker 1: That's why I think I'm a little uh, you know,
- 1:06:32Speaker 1: more willing to come out of the closet about it.
- 1:06:34Speaker 1: Oh yeah, you know, not a judgment, No, not at all.
- 1:06:37Speaker 1: I mean I'm sure it's gonna be a big hunting
- 1:06:40Speaker 1: crowd that watches that show. Um, what's your role in
- 1:06:43Speaker 1: the show. So it's about a NASCAR pit crew, Like,
- 1:06:46Speaker 1: who who are you? And I'm gonna I'm getting to it.
- 1:06:49Speaker 1: I am the chief engineer of the pit crew. Are
- 1:06:52Speaker 1: like a nerd? Yeah, it's my favorite. I get to
- 1:06:56Speaker 1: play a nerdy, a nerdy like socially awkward chief engineer.
- 1:07:00Speaker 1: It's like, it's the best. Did you have to learn
- 1:07:02Speaker 1: a lot of terminology? You know? Look, I went to Hopkins,
- 1:07:05Speaker 1: I was premd. I you know, I it's not it's
- 1:07:08Speaker 1: not that out of my wheelhouse. You can do a
- 1:07:11Speaker 1: little tech talk when you can do a little tech talk.
- 1:07:13Speaker 1: If I need to do some tech talk, I could
- 1:07:14Speaker 1: do some titilating tech tech talks. See that. I listened
- 1:07:17Speaker 1: to your podcast, Bro, I knew that was one of
- 1:07:19Speaker 1: the words. You're you know a word we don't use.
- 1:07:21Speaker 1: What's that alliteration? Really? Which is titilating? Alliteration is a
- 1:07:25Speaker 1: good one. You're here has use that word? Un No,
- 1:07:30Speaker 1: I like it. Um, So, how did you become so
- 1:07:34Speaker 1: so well read and all that stuff is it's just
- 1:07:37Speaker 1: just yourself just being like I feel like I'm just
- 1:07:40Speaker 1: going to fucking learn everything I can learn. Well, I
- 1:07:44Speaker 1: did a lot of I got to do a lot
- 1:07:45Speaker 1: of reading. UM. I appreciate you just asked me a question.
- 1:07:49Speaker 1: Uh no, I'm not too crazy about it. I'll tell
- 1:07:52Speaker 1: you the answer. No, because I went to when I
- 1:07:57Speaker 1: went to graduate school, it's supposed to be two year program,
- 1:07:59Speaker 1: but took me three years to get through. And you
- 1:08:04Speaker 1: already even if you do it two years, it's like
- 1:08:08Speaker 1: basically just go there and read. It's like writing. It's
- 1:08:12Speaker 1: a writing program, but you just read, um, and you
- 1:08:16Speaker 1: get to read a lot, and you're around people who
- 1:08:18Speaker 1: are exciting about reading. And I had always read a
- 1:08:22Speaker 1: lot and and had good, you know, like like somewhat
- 1:08:26Speaker 1: good retention about it. But um, it was in that
- 1:08:29Speaker 1: culture of uh you know, just like several years of
- 1:08:36Speaker 1: like very intensive reading. Um. And I think I learned
- 1:08:40Speaker 1: things from that because I remember, like leaving to go
- 1:08:42Speaker 1: to graduate school, I realized I had never read, I
- 1:08:44Speaker 1: never read anything approaching literature. And I remember dedicating a
- 1:08:50Speaker 1: summer to trying to get through James Joyce's Doublin Nurse
- 1:08:54Speaker 1: because I sure as hell was going to read, Uh
- 1:08:57Speaker 1: what's this? Yeah? Yeah, I was like, oh, so he's
- 1:09:01Speaker 1: got a little short book. He couldn't get through it
- 1:09:05Speaker 1: because I was like, all I've ever read was like
- 1:09:07Speaker 1: just stuff about nature, like nature stuff, history, mountain man
- 1:09:12Speaker 1: history stuff, Davy Crockett stuff. I just read all that
- 1:09:17Speaker 1: books about how to trap um and I remember thinking, like, man,
- 1:09:21Speaker 1: I got a bone up, and so I really like
- 1:09:23Speaker 1: tried very hard to get my way through Dubliners to
- 1:09:27Speaker 1: prepare for like a life of literature. Okay, yeah, but
- 1:09:31Speaker 1: you know what it's like. I've friends who have gone
- 1:09:33Speaker 1: to grad school and they don't become like what like
- 1:09:37Speaker 1: how you've become. And it's interesting. Reading your book was
- 1:09:40Speaker 1: very interesting to me because I was like, Okay, I'm
- 1:09:43Speaker 1: gonna read that his dad was a professor or something,
- 1:09:46Speaker 1: and like this was just something that like, you know,
- 1:09:49Speaker 1: even though they grew up around the woods, like you know,
- 1:09:51Speaker 1: he was always and that wasn't the case. I mean,
- 1:09:54Speaker 1: I didn't know that you were like trying to be
- 1:09:56Speaker 1: like a professional trapper. I was like, holy fuck man,
- 1:09:59Speaker 1: this guy, he he you can most people can't just
- 1:10:03Speaker 1: reinvent themselves as a fucking good writer. Well yeah, but
- 1:10:06Speaker 1: I think, yeah, think about too. Um is in some
- 1:10:10Speaker 1: ways this is true of me, And you're honest ambroty
- 1:10:15Speaker 1: here in some ways right now. I mean it's like
- 1:10:18Speaker 1: we effectively think about and talk about this stuff for
- 1:10:24Speaker 1: a living, right, So that's you know, you're devoting a
- 1:10:30Speaker 1: lot of time to it, like the subjects, you know,
- 1:10:34Speaker 1: not so much for writing them down. But it's just
- 1:10:37Speaker 1: you wind up kind of getting where I think you
- 1:10:39Speaker 1: wind up getting where you You just you have the
- 1:10:42Speaker 1: luxury of getting to immerse into something, um and really
- 1:10:50Speaker 1: surround yourself, surround yourself with people who are equally immersed.
- 1:10:54Speaker 1: And I did that and I got and I was
- 1:10:55Speaker 1: able to do that for a while with when I
- 1:10:59Speaker 1: went to school for writing, and then coming out of that,
- 1:11:03Speaker 1: all my friends are writers and you're just like immersed
- 1:11:05Speaker 1: and that kind of like gradually segued into you know,
- 1:11:09Speaker 1: I always had that focus in the outdoors, but then
- 1:11:11Speaker 1: why not becoming very immersed with people who think about
- 1:11:16Speaker 1: hunting all the time and think about fishing and write
- 1:11:18Speaker 1: about it and make their careers about it. And then
- 1:11:20Speaker 1: it winds up just has this snow I feel it
- 1:11:22Speaker 1: has this like snowballing effect. Right, You're just able to
- 1:11:26Speaker 1: devote an enormous amount of time and attention to something yeah, absolutely, um,
- 1:11:30Speaker 1: which I'm sure it is true, and many many other disciplines.
- 1:11:32Speaker 1: We had the other day, we had the insect guy
- 1:11:34Speaker 1: on right spend his whole career mess around insects, and
- 1:11:37Speaker 1: you can get you can stray pretty far from his
- 1:11:39Speaker 1: focus and ask some questions about bugs and he knows
- 1:11:41Speaker 1: what you're talking about. And you're like, how in the
- 1:11:43Speaker 1: world do you know? And they're like, oh, yeah, because
- 1:11:45Speaker 1: he liked me, spent twenty years dealing with these sort
- 1:11:49Speaker 1: of same sets of ideas. Yeah, yeah, it's awesome. I
- 1:11:52Speaker 1: mean it's I have a buddy, um, Josh Healed. He's uh.
- 1:11:55Speaker 1: He wrote the movie Hot Tup Time Machine, and he's
- 1:11:59Speaker 1: one of the writers of Cobra Kai this show, and
- 1:12:01Speaker 1: he he always says, I hate writing, but I love
- 1:12:05Speaker 1: being done with writing. Yeah, that's a there's a that's
- 1:12:08Speaker 1: a that's a there's many versions of that. Yeah, he
- 1:12:12Speaker 1: didn't come up with that, didn't. You're on bad Um
- 1:12:17Speaker 1: do you feel the same way? Oh? Absolutely. I think
- 1:12:21Speaker 1: it's just like like, I hate I hate writing words,
- 1:12:26Speaker 1: I hate writing. If there's nothing like being done with
- 1:12:27Speaker 1: Do you know the writer Ian Fraser, I don't think
- 1:12:30Speaker 1: he's a New Yorker writer. He wrote a book called
- 1:12:32Speaker 1: Great Planes, History of the American Great Plane, phenomenal book.
- 1:12:36Speaker 1: He was saying when he was young and he wanted
- 1:12:37Speaker 1: to be a writer, like he always grew up reading
- 1:12:40Speaker 1: The New Yorker, and he said, like when normal kids
- 1:12:41Speaker 1: draw like monster trucks and whatever, he would draw like
- 1:12:44Speaker 1: a person with a Martini glass. But he said, like
- 1:12:51Speaker 1: he always imagined, Oh, current, I have my look at
- 1:12:54Speaker 1: my shirt, shout out to check. He sie, you ever
- 1:13:03Speaker 1: go to Austin? This is where you ought to eat?
- 1:13:04Speaker 1: Oh yeah, you should hang out with Jesse Griffith's actually,
- 1:13:07Speaker 1: who's Jesse? He's no Mo, He's no. He's a hunter
- 1:13:11Speaker 1: in Austin, Texas. He has a restaurant. He teaches a
- 1:13:13Speaker 1: lot of people. You guys would actually, you guys would
- 1:13:17Speaker 1: be like nuts on a dog. I bet you. I
- 1:13:19Speaker 1: think you guys just love each other. Man, Um, yeah,
- 1:13:22Speaker 1: I think I remember was he on here? Or yeah? Yeah,
- 1:13:26Speaker 1: he's been on the show. You'd love that guy. Yeah,
- 1:13:28Speaker 1: he seems interesting. You guys hit it off. He's got
- 1:13:31Speaker 1: a good cook. But you know, for sure, what was
- 1:13:33Speaker 1: that getting at though? Um? We were talking about writing,
- 1:13:38Speaker 1: and then we were talking, Oh, girls can tell you
- 1:13:40Speaker 1: a good writing quote. Yeah, Um, how's it go? It's
- 1:13:46Speaker 1: like I'm gonna paraphrase the writing quote, but it's uh
- 1:13:50Speaker 1: some about like working on a book. It's like driving
- 1:13:53Speaker 1: somewhere at night where you can only see as far
- 1:13:57Speaker 1: as your headlights, but you just keep going and going
- 1:14:01Speaker 1: and going and going, and eventually you get there. Yeah,
- 1:14:05Speaker 1: and that's miserable. There's yeah and yeah without a GPS.
- 1:14:12Speaker 1: Because I think it's like there's so much potential for
- 1:14:15Speaker 1: wasting fucking hours and hours of hours, and the amount
- 1:14:19Speaker 1: of stuff that you write and you just throw out
- 1:14:21Speaker 1: is just like it's just wasted neurons. Well, I mean
- 1:14:24Speaker 1: it's not wasted because you you have to get through
- 1:14:26Speaker 1: that stuff to get to the good stuff. I work,
- 1:14:28Speaker 1: um lately on a couple of projects. I've worked with
- 1:14:32Speaker 1: Brody here as a writing partner, and Brodie's I mean
- 1:14:36Speaker 1: it's fair to say you're aself taught writer. I mean yeah,
- 1:14:40Speaker 1: I mean I studied writing it an undergrad state. Yeah,
- 1:14:44Speaker 1: not like it's near, nowhere near approaching what you did,
- 1:14:48Speaker 1: but yeah, a little bit enough. Um, he writes very
- 1:14:54Speaker 1: like there's a there's not a writing quote. R J. Apple.
- 1:14:58Speaker 1: I think no one or I can write better than
- 1:15:02Speaker 1: anyone that can write faster than me, And I can
- 1:15:04Speaker 1: write faster than anyone that can write better than me.
- 1:15:07Speaker 1: That's good. That's Brody a little bit. Yeah, Brody's like
- 1:15:10Speaker 1: just fast. Yeah, it doesn't have a lot of weight.
- 1:15:13Speaker 1: He doesn't like write whole pages and then be like yeah, wow,
- 1:15:17Speaker 1: hey he plays right writing for keeps. Yeah, I don't
- 1:15:21Speaker 1: like rewriting ship. Here's there's another quote that is actually
- 1:15:28Speaker 1: not attributed to writing. It's attributed to Napoleon on you
- 1:15:31Speaker 1: know how he won so many wars. But it's basically
- 1:15:35Speaker 1: I think it was quantity as a quality unto itself.
- 1:15:39Speaker 1: I gotta think about it. Oh yeah yeah, And I
- 1:15:42Speaker 1: think with writing that is so important. You just have
- 1:15:44Speaker 1: to fucking keep cranking stuff out right. Here's a writing
- 1:15:48Speaker 1: quote from a teacher. Hey, spin off podcast writing quote
- 1:15:53Speaker 1: from my tenth grade mentor. Yeah, um, if you're counting
- 1:15:59Speaker 1: the words, you're right. We'd be like, how long does
- 1:16:01Speaker 1: it need to be for the assignments? Yeah, if you're
- 1:16:03Speaker 1: counting the words, you're right. You're not writing words you
- 1:16:06Speaker 1: count I've later found out that's not necessarily true because
- 1:16:11Speaker 1: being a magazine better they never really like hold you
- 1:16:13Speaker 1: two word counts. Yeah, and then you are like, yeah,
- 1:16:18Speaker 1: we should tell that teacher for those who can't teach.
- 1:16:20Speaker 1: That's his quote on Sorry, Mr Eden, you're better just
- 1:16:27Speaker 1: turn turned everything off, shut it down. My career is
- 1:16:31Speaker 1: over after this podcast comes out. In my notes and things,
- 1:16:34Speaker 1: I wanted to ask you about why do I have down? Yeah,
- 1:16:37Speaker 1: giving gourmet game to hardcore hunters who can't cook. I
- 1:16:41Speaker 1: like that a sentence. That's not even a sentence, but said, no,
- 1:16:45Speaker 1: that was you know, Dean. Dean is the state trooper.
- 1:16:49Speaker 1: Him and his buddies, um can't cook. They can't cook
- 1:16:52Speaker 1: at all. And they think that tell me the same.
- 1:16:54Speaker 1: They're always like, dear, tastes horrible. I'm like, guys, it doesn't.
- 1:16:58Speaker 1: I'm telling you. And I made them the last time.
- 1:17:01Speaker 1: I took a bunch of ground deer and I made
- 1:17:04Speaker 1: like um. I made like Persian sausages, Persian kebab out
- 1:17:08Speaker 1: of them um, which is basically, you ground up the meat,
- 1:17:11Speaker 1: you have to mix it like you grind, you grind,
- 1:17:14Speaker 1: you grind, you grind the meat. You want a seventy
- 1:17:16Speaker 1: thirty fat to lean right. So I got a bunch
- 1:17:20Speaker 1: of beef tallow mix that in and then you want
- 1:17:23Speaker 1: to put a bunch of onions, ground grounded up onions
- 1:17:26Speaker 1: in there, and then some spices, and then you cook
- 1:17:29Speaker 1: it really low, so the onions caramelized within the kebab,
- 1:17:33Speaker 1: and you skewer these meat balls. I just made them
- 1:17:37Speaker 1: look you kind of make them look like little like
- 1:17:40Speaker 1: long fingers, like a sausage on a stick. It's yeah.
- 1:17:44Speaker 1: And then you put no casing and then you know,
- 1:17:47Speaker 1: you put some tumeric in it, you put some sumac
- 1:17:50Speaker 1: on it, you know. Uh, And these guys never had
- 1:17:53Speaker 1: to bush. I've had more of that than you can
- 1:17:56Speaker 1: you will ever have your horrile life. But I don't
- 1:17:59Speaker 1: know what that is. I know, like sumac, you know,
- 1:18:01Speaker 1: poison suma? Actually, yeah, so there's a berry and you
- 1:18:05Speaker 1: dry it out and then you turn into a powder. Yeah,
- 1:18:08Speaker 1: and it's used as um. It's used aes like if
- 1:18:11Speaker 1: you go to like Persian households, it's like salt pepper sumac.
- 1:18:15Speaker 1: I got some at home. I'll bring it for you tomorrow. Yeah,
- 1:18:17Speaker 1: I would appreciate that. But now, are you sure that
- 1:18:20Speaker 1: it's the same poison sumac that litters American roadways in
- 1:18:23Speaker 1: the Midwest. I don't know. Actually, I don't think it's
- 1:18:26Speaker 1: poison sumac. I think it's I think it's just as
- 1:18:29Speaker 1: it's just sumac. Is that is that? Am I? I
- 1:18:31Speaker 1: think so many I'm guilty not, I mean, I know, like, yeah, yeah,
- 1:18:37Speaker 1: I'm familiar with our sumac. I've never heard of someone
- 1:18:39Speaker 1: eating Have you ever collected and dried your own? No?
- 1:18:42Speaker 1: I haven't. I do fennel pollen though, every spring. Yeah
- 1:18:46Speaker 1: that's awesome. So it's expensive. Yeah, do you do any
- 1:18:50Speaker 1: of that? Do you do any of the foraging? The
- 1:18:51Speaker 1: foraging for I'd forage for the real standards like like
- 1:18:57Speaker 1: what like I like Morrel's oyster, mushrooms, bleats, ramps, ramps,
- 1:19:04Speaker 1: Oh man, I like you know, blackberries, you know, like
- 1:19:08Speaker 1: the Yeah. I tend to focus on the stuff that's
- 1:19:13Speaker 1: just good, like really good. Um, you're excited to have it.
- 1:19:19Speaker 1: Not laborious now that I have a problem with it.
- 1:19:21Speaker 1: If I didn't, if I wasn't into hunting and fishing,
- 1:19:23Speaker 1: I'd probably be a whole hog into that and I
- 1:19:25Speaker 1: would be making acorn flour and but um. I tend
- 1:19:28Speaker 1: to focus on the bountius exceptionally good things that if
- 1:19:35Speaker 1: you were in a story, you'd be almost tempted to
- 1:19:37Speaker 1: buy them kind of items and easy to spot with mushrooms.
- 1:19:40Speaker 1: I think anytime you're like is this poisonous or not,
- 1:19:42Speaker 1: you should just not. Yeah, my brother is fairly good.
- 1:19:45Speaker 1: He's pretty good mushroom guy. Um so I've kind of,
- 1:19:49Speaker 1: you know, leeched off him a little bit. I went
- 1:19:51Speaker 1: last year for the first time, I joined the l
- 1:19:53Speaker 1: A Mycological Systems and be married. Now I have a girlfriend.
- 1:19:58Speaker 1: Did you meet here that after you heard that I
- 1:19:59Speaker 1: do the LAEL Are you gonna die alone? Bro? No?
- 1:20:04Speaker 1: Not at the l A picture a shrewd. I could
- 1:20:08Speaker 1: picture a shrewd single person joining that society with motives
- 1:20:15Speaker 1: other than mushrooms, just to be like, I wonder if no,
- 1:20:20Speaker 1: my girlfriend is a she's an actress in l A.
- 1:20:23Speaker 1: She's an l A actress. Well she eat, dear me,
- 1:20:25Speaker 1: she will. I mean, she grew up in Kentucky, so
- 1:20:28Speaker 1: she's a hillbilly. She's a little hillbilly. She's got some
- 1:20:30Speaker 1: of that in her. Um So she's like, she's totally
- 1:20:34Speaker 1: fine with the hunting. She's fine with yeah, which is cool, man,
- 1:20:38Speaker 1: because that's hard to find in in a lady in
- 1:20:40Speaker 1: l A's thing. About her. Mo loves her Man Mo
- 1:20:46Speaker 1: is a surgeon now in Upstate, New York, and he
- 1:20:48Speaker 1: takes all of his fucking money and just goes on
- 1:20:50Speaker 1: these sheep hunts that are like fifteen thousand bucks. He's
- 1:20:54Speaker 1: an international sheep. Yeah, he's trying to get that thing.
- 1:20:57Speaker 1: What's it called the Grand Slam. I mean, I'm a turkey,
- 1:21:01Speaker 1: your turkey Grand Slam Slam, Super Slam, Super Slam. It's
- 1:21:04Speaker 1: better than Grand whoa dude, if you were single, that
- 1:21:08Speaker 1: would that that fun factor get you laid so hard.
- 1:21:11Speaker 1: We had a guy sending a picture of a tattoo
- 1:21:13Speaker 1: or he had the country like he had like America
- 1:21:16Speaker 1: tattooed on his arm, and he had little Turkey tracks
- 1:21:20Speaker 1: tattooed where he fulfilled his super Slam okay, and then
- 1:21:25Speaker 1: he had the different feathers tattooed on his arm, and um,
- 1:21:30Speaker 1: I like, you know you, as Julian, appreciate this. I'm untattooed, okay.
- 1:21:35Speaker 1: And I thought about and I thought about, I half
- 1:21:41Speaker 1: jokingly half seriously thought about getting something similar. Didn't do it.
- 1:21:48Speaker 1: The sheep Grand Slam thing. One of the sheep he said,
- 1:21:52Speaker 1: there's like a world Yanna used it he's used you
- 1:21:55Speaker 1: pretty good about this. Tell everybody, Johnie what Yeah, well
- 1:22:00Speaker 1: there's a North American yeah, which is just four, which
- 1:22:03Speaker 1: is the fourth sheep that you can kill here. But
- 1:22:06Speaker 1: he might be going all over there, he's going all
- 1:22:07Speaker 1: over He was just in like, uh of, what's it called,
- 1:22:12Speaker 1: right next to Italy, northeast of Italy the Mediterranean. Yeah, Spain, No, Croatia, Croatia.
- 1:22:20Speaker 1: He was in Croatia to do this. He went to
- 1:22:22Speaker 1: the Alps and then he went to Alaska. I think
- 1:22:25Speaker 1: he's doing one in Texas. I don't know what your
- 1:22:29Speaker 1: body's off to you, but it doesn't have anything to
- 1:22:31Speaker 1: do with Texas. Hold on, here's the Texas one. And
- 1:22:33Speaker 1: this is one not to ask you about because this
- 1:22:34Speaker 1: seems ill not legit to me. Texas. One of these
- 1:22:37Speaker 1: sheep is like a like it's like an Armenian sheep
- 1:22:41Speaker 1: or some ship, and it's like in Iran. And because
- 1:22:45Speaker 1: it's hard, you can't go to Iran to hunt or
- 1:22:46Speaker 1: it'll it'll, you know, it's hard. Some dude in Texas
- 1:22:49Speaker 1: apparently has these sheep and it's still counts with the
- 1:22:53Speaker 1: for the Grand Slam, Like apparently it still counts for
- 1:22:56Speaker 1: the grants, probably through Safari Club. It does. Yeah, Oh
- 1:23:02Speaker 1: your sellout bro doesn't count. No, I'm not down on mo.
- 1:23:07Speaker 1: I like mo better not like you. Mo is Mo
- 1:23:12Speaker 1: is so jealous that I'm here right now. He's like,
- 1:23:15Speaker 1: you don't even know anything about hunting. You don't even
- 1:23:18Speaker 1: know what it's three six is man. Well, it's not
- 1:23:22Speaker 1: like we're like, give us your tin hunting tips. Dude.
- 1:23:26Speaker 1: That by the way, you know what, since Steve asked,
- 1:23:29Speaker 1: come on, give us your top three hunt top three
- 1:23:32Speaker 1: hunting tips. Oh please, I'm not even joking. Are you serious?
- 1:23:36Speaker 1: I would love to hear it. It's a good idea.
- 1:23:37Speaker 1: Top three hunting tips. Okay, here's a fun one. Clear
- 1:23:41Speaker 1: the leaves out of the tree stand before you get
- 1:23:44Speaker 1: in there, because they'll just rustle the russell the whole time. Um,
- 1:23:49Speaker 1: that's not that's Dan's hot. To take your scope cover off.
- 1:23:51Speaker 1: The scope cover off is number one. Um, and I
- 1:23:57Speaker 1: would say this isn't really a hot hot tip, but
- 1:24:00Speaker 1: use those organs. I made a pete once out of
- 1:24:02Speaker 1: the Heart and the liver bro. It was so delicious,
- 1:24:06Speaker 1: it was crazy delicious. The technical chef, I mean pretty
- 1:24:11Speaker 1: dabble dabble. Yeah, um. And also I would say this
- 1:24:17Speaker 1: don't be so this is five insertion, here's going there's
- 1:24:24Speaker 1: no limit. Here's my pet peeves, here's my pet peeve.
- 1:24:26Speaker 1: Were moving on from tips and the pet peeves. Yeah,
- 1:24:29Speaker 1: it's gonna it's gonna turn into a tip because Okay, whenever, whenever,
- 1:24:33Speaker 1: there's no point in life that I get more anxiety
- 1:24:36Speaker 1: than and I have to walk into like a gun store,
- 1:24:38Speaker 1: like a hunting store, or like a shooting just because
- 1:24:40Speaker 1: you're like, I don't have any idea what's in here.
- 1:24:42Speaker 1: I just feel like they love to make you feel stupid,
- 1:24:46Speaker 1: Like if you say the wrong if you referred to
- 1:24:48Speaker 1: the to the shell as a bullet or a bullet
- 1:24:51Speaker 1: as a shell, They're like, you don't even know what
- 1:24:53Speaker 1: the terminology is. I'm like, there's like a all like
- 1:24:58Speaker 1: Napoleon dynamite kinda, And I fucking hate it. And I'm like, yo,
- 1:25:04Speaker 1: if you're trying to get people to, you know, be
- 1:25:07Speaker 1: on your side about hunting or guns or whatever, be nicer,
- 1:25:11Speaker 1: Be nicer to people who don't know about them, and
- 1:25:14Speaker 1: don't assume that everyone knows what the thirty odd six is.
- 1:25:17Speaker 1: You know, Yeah, it's I hate it. Walking into the
- 1:25:22Speaker 1: Apple store. Yeah. Well, but they're nice to you there.
- 1:25:25Speaker 1: They're nice. They're wearing their shirts like yeah. But listen next,
- 1:25:30Speaker 1: when when I go into these gun stores and they
- 1:25:32Speaker 1: give me I'm not like rubbing into their face that
- 1:25:35Speaker 1: I know organic chemistry and they don't. I'm not like,
- 1:25:38Speaker 1: what h four messing you idiot? You don't know anything.
- 1:25:43Speaker 1: But that's the vibe I get at those places. Man,
- 1:25:45Speaker 1: so hot tip, be nicer to non gun people. Can
- 1:25:48Speaker 1: I give you a hot too? Oh God, it's about
- 1:25:51Speaker 1: walking into gun store please. Okay, I have found I've
- 1:25:54Speaker 1: talked about this before. I've found a strategy in life
- 1:25:57Speaker 1: of dealing. Um, it's a start conversations like that with
- 1:26:03Speaker 1: I'm just a total dumbass, right. Yeah. And I think
- 1:26:07Speaker 1: when I used when I talked about this before, the
- 1:26:09Speaker 1: context was having a plumber come over having a problem
- 1:26:13Speaker 1: with I couldn't figure something out, and the plumber comes over,
- 1:26:17Speaker 1: and instead of being in a swinging dick contest okay,
- 1:26:21Speaker 1: instead of being like, well I almost got it licked,
- 1:26:23Speaker 1: you know, but whoever plumb this thing? Right? Instead of
- 1:26:26Speaker 1: doing that, I think the solderings off. Yeah, I'm like,
- 1:26:29Speaker 1: you know what, man, I'm just a total dumbass. I
- 1:26:32Speaker 1: try to take it apart. I don't know what I'm
- 1:26:34Speaker 1: looking at you. Oh buddy, let's take a look. It's
- 1:26:37Speaker 1: just everything. And if you come in, if you go
- 1:26:42Speaker 1: into your local gun store and you say, just starting out,
- 1:26:46Speaker 1: total dumbass. Um. I've been out a few times. I
- 1:26:50Speaker 1: left my concealed carry at home. But you know, what
- 1:26:53Speaker 1: can you tell me? Now? Man? I walk into see
- 1:26:57Speaker 1: how walking, dick swinging? I call everyone, chief, where you
- 1:27:07Speaker 1: keep the good stuff? Chief? Hey? Doing? No? I think
- 1:27:11Speaker 1: you should try that in your local guns. Yeah, yeah,
- 1:27:14Speaker 1: I think then they will take more of a paternal view.
- 1:27:16Speaker 1: I do find that gun stores in UH cities are
- 1:27:20Speaker 1: usually I don't know, they're even meaner than like gun
- 1:27:23Speaker 1: stories like the one in Olan that we have You
- 1:27:25Speaker 1: ever been in John Javino's gun shop. That's the meanest
- 1:27:28Speaker 1: gun store in the world. It's like, there's a gun
- 1:27:29Speaker 1: store in Manhattan. It's in Manhattan. No, but the one
- 1:27:33Speaker 1: in at least the police use it to buy, like
- 1:27:35Speaker 1: buy their weapons. You can do ffl ffl transfers. You
- 1:27:39Speaker 1: want to talk about players who are very mean? Do
- 1:27:40Speaker 1: you like very annoyed that you're in there? I hate it.
- 1:27:44Speaker 1: Like that's different because that's like I feel like it's
- 1:27:46Speaker 1: like it's like law enforcement v. Civilian. Yeah, it's not
- 1:27:52Speaker 1: like you know, but even then the law enforcement in
- 1:27:56Speaker 1: you know, Olean or you know Upstate New York is
- 1:28:00Speaker 1: totally for their civilians having guns, like they're fine. Well,
- 1:28:03Speaker 1: I don't mean in that way. I just mean that
- 1:28:05Speaker 1: like pross like professionally trained, you know, and these are services,
- 1:28:10Speaker 1: you know, they're dealing mostly in service weapons. And then
- 1:28:12Speaker 1: you come in and you're like your elm or fund
- 1:28:15Speaker 1: right right right right. It's just it's just it's not cute.
- 1:28:19Speaker 1: They don't think it's cute. Yeah, oh man, it's yeah.
- 1:28:22Speaker 1: It's not like you shouldn't be allowed to if anything is.
- 1:28:25Speaker 1: It's the opposite of that. But it's just it's condescending.
- 1:28:29Speaker 1: I hate it. I hate it. But try that approach
- 1:28:31Speaker 1: and going stories and also, um, do you don't do
- 1:28:35Speaker 1: you live in a place where you can sort of
- 1:28:36Speaker 1: develop a relationship with some people at your going you know,
- 1:28:40Speaker 1: I don't. Here's the thing. I don't go shooting that
- 1:28:43Speaker 1: much that I need that. I don't think like I
- 1:28:46Speaker 1: have a I do have a I have a handgun
- 1:28:48Speaker 1: at home for personal for you know, But I got
- 1:28:52Speaker 1: a revolver just because I didn't want to have to
- 1:28:55Speaker 1: keep going to the range to exercise the spring on
- 1:28:57Speaker 1: a on a semi automatic. Wow, you know your stuff
- 1:29:00Speaker 1: of man, this is why he winds up in the showdown.
- 1:29:09Speaker 1: When I lived in Seattle, there was there was I
- 1:29:11Speaker 1: did most of my sport, like most of my sporting
- 1:29:14Speaker 1: goods purchases and my firearms transactions from a place called
- 1:29:17Speaker 1: Outdoor Emporium. And there was a guy there, Brian, that
- 1:29:22Speaker 1: I liked a lot, and I would come in and
- 1:29:24Speaker 1: like be like, where's Brian? And I would text Brian
- 1:29:28Speaker 1: to be like are you at work? Brian's looking at
- 1:29:31Speaker 1: his phone, rolling his eyes like like are you down there?
- 1:29:34Speaker 1: He's like I'm here, Like I gotta come down, and
- 1:29:35Speaker 1: I'll come down. I was like, deal with a guy,
- 1:29:37Speaker 1: Deal with Brian. I liked. I liked, get it, I
- 1:29:41Speaker 1: get it. They're very actually they're very nice to me.
- 1:29:43Speaker 1: At Whitetail, which is the store in Oleen, which is
- 1:29:46Speaker 1: the one that mogoes to because he's the mayor of Oleen.
- 1:29:49Speaker 1: So I'd walk in there even without him because he'd
- 1:29:52Speaker 1: be like, Hey, I'm friends with Dr Alhumi And it's
- 1:29:56Speaker 1: hilarious because it's like it's this like super red necky
- 1:29:59Speaker 1: guns though, and they're like, oh, you know Dr l
- 1:30:01Speaker 1: Maddie Carpet exactly. You mentioned the Arab guy's name, and
- 1:30:05Speaker 1: they're like, Dr Who Maddie did my nee scope? Like
- 1:30:09Speaker 1: they all know, and then they're probably like I thought
- 1:30:13Speaker 1: there was something about you and him, but yeah, never mind. Yeah, man, hey,
- 1:30:18Speaker 1: you never know. I'd be open minded. I want to
- 1:30:21Speaker 1: ask you the last question. It was something that that
- 1:30:23Speaker 1: you had mentioned to talk about maybe didn't um gun safety?
- 1:30:28Speaker 1: Gun safety? Yeah, so this was are you paranoid? You know,
- 1:30:31Speaker 1: I'm very paranoid now any accidental discharges? It was a
- 1:30:36Speaker 1: part of one UM and it was you're not gonna
- 1:30:39Speaker 1: believe it was with I was with Mo and uh,
- 1:30:45Speaker 1: you know, I always would give him ship for like
- 1:30:48Speaker 1: you know, he's always like make sure that everything is
- 1:30:52Speaker 1: out of the chamber and like me all you know,
- 1:30:54Speaker 1: he does he really sound like that? No, not at all.
- 1:30:57Speaker 1: He's very educated guy, and he's you know, just like
- 1:30:59Speaker 1: always pointing in the right direction and it's not which
- 1:31:01Speaker 1: is obviously totally normal. But then when I'm like trying
- 1:31:04Speaker 1: to load load my gun. He like he didn't have
- 1:31:07Speaker 1: faith in me, you know, so he was trying. He's
- 1:31:10Speaker 1: he micromanaged the situation. So he had We were going
- 1:31:13Speaker 1: turkey hunting, which I've never I've never gotten a turkey.
- 1:31:15Speaker 1: I've gone a couple of times that in his same
- 1:31:17Speaker 1: little yeah yeah um. But honestly, when we go, it's
- 1:31:21Speaker 1: like ramp season. So the first light comes out and like,
- 1:31:24Speaker 1: I see the ramps and I lose my sh um.
- 1:31:28Speaker 1: But yeah, so I think his hands were on on
- 1:31:33Speaker 1: the shotgun. My hands were on it, and boom it
- 1:31:35Speaker 1: went off. I don't understand you're both handling the same yep,
- 1:31:38Speaker 1: because he's instructing uns on something. Yeah, and I think
- 1:31:41Speaker 1: I was like, dude, I got it. And it was
- 1:31:42Speaker 1: a little bit of pulling and pushing and boom it
- 1:31:46Speaker 1: went off. And he's like, here's how to do this
- 1:31:49Speaker 1: safely and you're like, no, it's not it, No you don't.
- 1:31:52Speaker 1: So it's like a combination of me, uh not my
- 1:31:55Speaker 1: ego and then his distrust of me, you know, together
- 1:32:00Speaker 1: and it was it went off. I mean we were
- 1:32:02Speaker 1: in between. You know, it's shot in front of us.
- 1:32:05Speaker 1: But scary, very scary. Oh, I've been witness too. I mean,
- 1:32:11Speaker 1: in all honesty, I've probably been witnessed in a lifetime
- 1:32:15Speaker 1: of of gunplay. I've probably been witnessed to in excess
- 1:32:19Speaker 1: of a dozen counting being kids. Dude, we're kids. That's
- 1:32:24Speaker 1: why I like muzzle control. It's like, if you know,
- 1:32:28Speaker 1: we're remember walking up my mom like the steps from
- 1:32:31Speaker 1: my mom and dad's house to the garage and my
- 1:32:35Speaker 1: buddy Brian burrowing in a twenty two shells next to
- 1:32:39Speaker 1: my knee into the grass when we're high schoolers. But
- 1:32:45Speaker 1: I mean, thankfully that even though people didn't have good
- 1:32:48Speaker 1: trigger control, they had good muscle control. And I've never
- 1:32:52Speaker 1: I've never been I've never seen I know, you've seen
- 1:32:55Speaker 1: any seen anything that I would even call a holes call. Yeah,
- 1:32:59Speaker 1: which is it's like a two tiered thing. It's like
- 1:33:02Speaker 1: it shouldn't go off, but then there's sort of if
- 1:33:05Speaker 1: it does, what are you doing? When I review the
- 1:33:08Speaker 1: times I've seen accidental discharge, I look and I'm like,
- 1:33:13Speaker 1: I don't want to say the system, you know, I'm
- 1:33:15Speaker 1: reluctant to say the system worked, but the system worked,
- 1:33:19Speaker 1: and that people were conscious of what they were where
- 1:33:23Speaker 1: the muzzle was. Yeah, I mean what they're doing. All
- 1:33:26Speaker 1: you need to do is combine those two slip ups.
- 1:33:28Speaker 1: So you combine the muzzle control, you make that mistake
- 1:33:32Speaker 1: and then the handling mistake. And it's when those two things,
- 1:33:36Speaker 1: like in those split seconds and those two things line up,
- 1:33:40Speaker 1: is when you have trouble. But I can spend days.
- 1:33:44Speaker 1: I might spend days out hunting with a couple of
- 1:33:47Speaker 1: friends and reviewing it my mind, if they're seasoned people
- 1:33:52Speaker 1: reviewing my mind. There was never a moment when had
- 1:33:56Speaker 1: a gun had sort of like God made a gun
- 1:33:59Speaker 1: go off. There's never a moment when it would have
- 1:34:01Speaker 1: struck somebody because people are being very conscious about what
- 1:34:04Speaker 1: they're doing and where they're pointing. Yeah, so it's like like,
- 1:34:07Speaker 1: you know, negligent discharge, accidental just you know in the
- 1:34:10Speaker 1: Marines are it's like this thing like there's no such
- 1:34:12Speaker 1: thing as a negligent discharge or how's it going. No,
- 1:34:15Speaker 1: there's no such thing as an accidental discharge. It's always
- 1:34:17Speaker 1: a negligent negligent discharge. So it's scary as hell. But
- 1:34:23Speaker 1: I do all think like you're like, that was close,
- 1:34:25Speaker 1: and I'm like, but thankfully it wasn't closed because the
- 1:34:27Speaker 1: other components of safety thankfully were in place. I'm in
- 1:34:31Speaker 1: no way excusing that happening, but I've just seen it happen. Now,
- 1:34:35Speaker 1: how many times have you seen to happen? Not that many,
- 1:34:38Speaker 1: but not a dozen. No, I don't know handful. Yeah,
- 1:34:43Speaker 1: I've seen you see it happen. That's right. Yeah, does
- 1:34:50Speaker 1: that mean you did it? I think in the beginning,
- 1:34:55Speaker 1: I think it was very hard for me to understand
- 1:34:56Speaker 1: when there was a um a shell in the chain,
- 1:35:00Speaker 1: like if you if you've cycled everything out and once
- 1:35:04Speaker 1: like an idiot, I was like, I think I got
- 1:35:05Speaker 1: them all and I pointed up to shoot the shotgun
- 1:35:08Speaker 1: and boom, and I was like, oh no, I didn't.
- 1:35:09Speaker 1: There was one in there. You know. MO lost his
- 1:35:13Speaker 1: ship again, which he should have. But then after that
- 1:35:15Speaker 1: I took a hunter safety. Of course, I was like,
- 1:35:17Speaker 1: I need to learn to rain this ship in. I'll
- 1:35:20Speaker 1: tell you hot to um what if this is for Mo?
- 1:35:24Speaker 1: The next time you start out a person, MO, give
- 1:35:28Speaker 1: him a break open gun. Oh like a yeah, my
- 1:35:34Speaker 1: little boy he now has his own four ten. Yeah
- 1:35:37Speaker 1: he's nine. I'm gonna pretend like I know what a
- 1:35:39Speaker 1: four ten is. But yeah, so it's like the smallest shotgun. Okay,
- 1:35:43Speaker 1: got it. So I'll let me tell you a couple
- 1:35:45Speaker 1: of little tips tips here. You know gauge is right, yes, okay, yes, okay,
- 1:35:51Speaker 1: twelve gauge. Yes, we've covered this extensively. I do, yes, yes,
- 1:35:57Speaker 1: I I keep learning and then I sort of forget.
- 1:35:59Speaker 1: But I kind of know, Phil, you're asking for my
- 1:36:03Speaker 1: if I know what a toll gauges. I just want
- 1:36:04Speaker 1: someone to say no so I can tell, because I
- 1:36:05Speaker 1: like telling you. Okay, tell it. No, no, No, I
- 1:36:07Speaker 1: don't twelve gauge. You take that diameter, the barrel diameter,
- 1:36:13Speaker 1: twelve lead spheres that size make up a pound. Twelve
- 1:36:18Speaker 1: leads spheres that there is a twelve gage, twenty gauge.
- 1:36:22Speaker 1: It takes ten lead spheres that size to make a pound.
- 1:36:26Speaker 1: Four ten sorry, yeah, four ten is the only is
- 1:36:31Speaker 1: a four ten is an exception to this to the
- 1:36:33Speaker 1: gauge system. So it would be like, you know, just
- 1:36:37Speaker 1: twenty eight not common, but there are twenty eight gauge,
- 1:36:41Speaker 1: sixteen gauge, twelve gauge. When you buy shrimp from a
- 1:36:44Speaker 1: grocery store, they measure it the same way too. Engages. Well,
- 1:36:47Speaker 1: it's how many how many shrimp. Yeah, shrimp count so
- 1:36:51Speaker 1: you know. Um yeah, great, smaller the number, the bigger
- 1:36:54Speaker 1: the shrimp. There you go. Uh, A four ten is
- 1:36:58Speaker 1: like point four one oh of an inch diameter shotgun.
- 1:37:01Speaker 1: Got it. Uh. If someone were to say to you,
- 1:37:04Speaker 1: I'm gonna get a fifty gage shotgun and shoot you,
- 1:37:07Speaker 1: that's a very small shotgun, right, that would be a
- 1:37:10Speaker 1: baby gun. Um. We should get MO on the phone
- 1:37:13Speaker 1: and ask him why he didn't give me that guy.
- 1:37:15Speaker 1: But I'm just just just a hot safety tip for listeners.
- 1:37:18Speaker 1: I bought my nine year old a four ten that
- 1:37:22Speaker 1: just breaks open. There's no like wondering what's going on.
- 1:37:26Speaker 1: It's perfect. When he approaches people, I'm like, open that
- 1:37:31Speaker 1: thing up. Click, it's open, Like anyone can see what's
- 1:37:35Speaker 1: happening when you open it and look, there's no way
- 1:37:39Speaker 1: to be confused about whether this thing's loaded not loaded?
- 1:37:43Speaker 1: Is there still one in there? It just is a
- 1:37:45Speaker 1: great way to start people out. Yeah, there's a button
- 1:37:48Speaker 1: you hit and it hinges open and it's for the
- 1:37:51Speaker 1: whole world to see what is happening inside that shotgun. Perfect. Yeah,
- 1:37:55Speaker 1: it's it's a lot. Even when I've get him like
- 1:38:00Speaker 1: a little bolt action twenty two of the magazine. In it,
- 1:38:02Speaker 1: I'm very paranoid about like what he's doing, and he,
- 1:38:06Speaker 1: you know, like he opens it clos I'm like, whoa, stop,
- 1:38:11Speaker 1: what are you doing? And I need to look? Did
- 1:38:13Speaker 1: he like inadvertently rack one. You know, it's funny. As
- 1:38:16Speaker 1: someone who didn't grow up hunting, I'm a little like
- 1:38:21Speaker 1: like kids and guns. It's still I think gives me
- 1:38:24Speaker 1: a little bit of it. Should Yeah, you know, I
- 1:38:29Speaker 1: was just shooting with my oldest this weekend and it's
- 1:38:32Speaker 1: nerve racking. Yeah, how does he she's nine? Sorry eighty? Yeah,
- 1:38:38Speaker 1: I tell my kid, I say, like, very like explicitly,
- 1:38:43Speaker 1: I'll tell him like you can mess up with that
- 1:38:45Speaker 1: and kill your brother. Yeah. Wow, you break it down
- 1:38:50Speaker 1: like that. Yeah. I try to make it like like
- 1:38:53Speaker 1: the gravity of what we're I don't want them to
- 1:38:55Speaker 1: be any confusion about what we're talking about. Yeah, I
- 1:38:58Speaker 1: mean that's you should good. It's like we don't how
- 1:39:01Speaker 1: someone could get hurt five seven and nine, five seven
- 1:39:06Speaker 1: and nine. Yeah, you just paint a picture high. You're
- 1:39:08Speaker 1: just like you're gonna It's like it's not like as
- 1:39:13Speaker 1: impactful as you might imagine. When I do say this
- 1:39:16Speaker 1: but I do like to. He's just like, is that
- 1:39:21Speaker 1: a bad thing? He's pretty annoying. Yeah, but now I've
- 1:39:28Speaker 1: become a hunter safety Nazi. I'm like crazy about it.
- 1:39:31Speaker 1: It's good. Yeah, which is the way you should be.
- 1:39:34Speaker 1: I'm glad to have I'm glad to have you in
- 1:39:36Speaker 1: the um brotherhood and sisterhood. Yeah, it's a good way
- 1:39:41Speaker 1: to put that family. It's good to be in the family.
- 1:39:46Speaker 1: And it's good to be in the family. Uh, and
- 1:39:49Speaker 1: have a conversation with the with the guy that that
- 1:39:52Speaker 1: you had had a big deal with me staying in.
- 1:39:54Speaker 1: It's really great to have Mo in the family. Mo Is.
- 1:39:58Speaker 1: You know, fun Mo man, this is about most killing
- 1:40:02Speaker 1: a fake sheep so he could get a fake title
- 1:40:06Speaker 1: and you're just a hard Yeah. He's living it only
- 1:40:09Speaker 1: and it's easy for him. I'm in West Hollywood, man,
- 1:40:12Speaker 1: I'm in the trenches. So run down, run down for folks, Like,
- 1:40:16Speaker 1: what's what's the best way how do people go take
- 1:40:19Speaker 1: you in? Yes, your Instagram is stand Up Dan, Stand
- 1:40:22Speaker 1: Up Dan. Yeah, it's like no one can spell Dana dude.
- 1:40:26Speaker 1: So I was like, I need to need to shore
- 1:40:28Speaker 1: this up. So Instagram at stand up Dan twitters stand
- 1:40:31Speaker 1: up Dan as well. Are you active on Twitter? Pretty active?
- 1:40:34Speaker 1: You do you engage in like Twitter outrage about someone's tweet? No, dude,
- 1:40:39Speaker 1: I stay out of that. That to me is more
- 1:40:41Speaker 1: as a comedian. I'm like seeing like like comedians you know,
- 1:40:45Speaker 1: don't host shows now because they wrote a tweet twenty
- 1:40:48Speaker 1: years ago and they bring it back. I'm like, my
- 1:40:50Speaker 1: Twitter is pretty anemic. Um, which again is a bummer
- 1:40:54Speaker 1: that has to yeah, because you gotta control your impulse
- 1:40:56Speaker 1: to make like it. You're like, how's that funny? I'll
- 1:40:58Speaker 1: just put it up decades from now, I'll lose a job.
- 1:41:01Speaker 1: Remember when Dance said that? Well again testament to why
- 1:41:04Speaker 1: Rogan has paved such a great, you know, path for
- 1:41:07Speaker 1: himself because he doesn't it doesn't matter to him because
- 1:41:10Speaker 1: he's self generated, so he doesn't Yeah, and he um,
- 1:41:17Speaker 1: he gives all sides of everything a voice are also
- 1:41:24Speaker 1: articulates all sides of everything in a way that makes
- 1:41:27Speaker 1: everyone look like a jackass. And so it's just I
- 1:41:31Speaker 1: love him because he's just like he's like so curious,
- 1:41:34Speaker 1: He's so curious, But I think sometimes he can just
- 1:41:37Speaker 1: be convinced of anything, Like I feel like a flat
- 1:41:40Speaker 1: Arthur can come on there and he's like really, yeah, okay,
- 1:41:43Speaker 1: I'll look into that to open mind a little bit.
- 1:41:47Speaker 1: But but I think it's more it's probably just his
- 1:41:49Speaker 1: style of interview, which it gets people comfortable to open up. Um.
- 1:41:53Speaker 1: But yeah. And then my food podcast, my new it's
- 1:41:56Speaker 1: the number one food podcast in America right now. It's
- 1:41:59Speaker 1: called Green Eggs and Dance and you can get anywhere
- 1:42:03Speaker 1: you get podcasts. It's an hour long. Um. So if
- 1:42:07Speaker 1: people like exhausted the library of this show, yeah, I
- 1:42:12Speaker 1: had to head to Green Eggs and Dan check it out.
- 1:42:14Speaker 1: I really like, had just listened, like honest to god,
- 1:42:17Speaker 1: listen to every episode, they might go find Green Eggs
- 1:42:23Speaker 1: and Dance. Yeah, and they find it anywhere all the
- 1:42:26Speaker 1: you knows, all the place stuff and in your brand
- 1:42:29Speaker 1: new spik any TV show. Oh yeah on Netflix parent network.

- 1:42:36Speaker 1: will the air It's gonna be airing, Uh sometime in
- 1:42:40Speaker 1: the fall. They wanted to like, uh correspond with NASCAR dates.
- 1:42:44Speaker 1: I saw that I saw my first NASCAR race ever
- 1:42:47Speaker 1: last week and it was intense. There was like a
- 1:42:50Speaker 1: crazy car cry, someone almost died. Yeah, but are you
- 1:42:55Speaker 1: still filming. Yeah, we are. This is our hiatus week
- 1:42:58Speaker 1: and everyone's like, what are you doing in Heitus You're relaxing.

- 1:43:32Speaker 1: is it good that you're out doing this. I think
- 1:43:34Speaker 1: that you think that Hunters probably are more of a
- 1:43:37Speaker 1: scarlet letter than they are. Oh no, I do not.
- 1:43:40Speaker 1: What are you talking about entertain I don't mean that.
- 1:43:42Speaker 1: What did you mean? Sorry that? Like, um, you know,

- 1:43:48Speaker 1: you know what I'm saying. Oh, I don't know. You
- 1:43:56Speaker 1: there's like a certain level of thing where it just
- 1:43:58Speaker 1: gets all secret e we are said, people coming out
- 1:44:00Speaker 1: here being all secret about stuff, and I'm like, why
- 1:44:02Speaker 1: are the world's being secret about? No, I'm not, but
- 1:44:04Speaker 1: I think I should probably be more secrety. Like I'm
- 1:44:06Speaker 1: going skiing tomorrow, big guy, I probably shouldn't be doing
- 1:44:09Speaker 1: that since we're filming. But you know how often am
- 1:44:12Speaker 1: I going to be in Bozeman? Um? Do you got

- 1:44:30Speaker 1: the wood, the whole crew of No, I'm just surprised
- 1:44:36Speaker 1: you don't have like O, I don't know, like acting
- 1:44:39Speaker 1: body or something. Who's up there? No, most back in
- 1:44:41Speaker 1: New York. Most back in New York couldn't make it.

- 1:45:15Speaker 1: Disney show that they are obsessed with kicking it and

- 1:47:03Speaker 1: I hung out with people that really knew about this.
- 1:47:08Speaker 1: And I just want to throw in a plug for
- 1:47:09Speaker 1: bajillion dollar properties again. Oh yeah, I think you can
- 1:47:12Speaker 1: watch the whole, the whole show on Pluto. I forgot

- 1:48:18Speaker 1: good with a shaved head. Bro looks good. Yanni, I
- 1:48:20Speaker 1: don't think you only YI would look good with a

- 1:48:25Speaker 1: a bunch of hair. Yeah, you've got like a rectangular
- 1:48:28Speaker 1: you need like a round face for it. It shaved
- 1:48:31Speaker 1: all summer really yeah yeah, but like, but it alludes
- 1:48:35Speaker 1: to hair because it's not it's not like shiny. You've
