- 0:10be a farmer. This is my chicken coop and I
- 0:12come out here every day to record a podcast to teach
- 0:16distinctions, possibilities, new ways of thinking, and just bring
- 0:20some joy into the world. So welcome to the coop and let's
- 0:23start your day off in a fantastic way.
- 0:28Hey everybody, good morning from the chicken coop.
- 0:31Friend or foe? That's the question of the day.
- 0:34Now in gardening, that's a phrase we use a lot, friend or
- 0:37foe. And I was in my zucchini area,
- 0:43and zucchini is always something I love growing zucchini because
- 0:47I like all different forms of cooking with it.
- 0:50And one of my favorite things to do, believe it or not, is bake
- 0:53with it because it makes unbelievable chocolate muffins.
- 0:56So chocolate zucchini muffins are outrageous.
- 0:59They're delicious. And it's not just for main
- 1:02savories or whatever, but they make unbelievably good muffins.
- 1:07So I'm always like wanting to make zucchini.
- 1:10Plus, I use a lot of zucchini for the chickens and if I can
- 1:13grow some extra, that's great. But most of the time we eat the
- 1:17zucchini that's in the garden. But anyway, friend or foe, I'm
- 1:20out here the other night and I'm looking because they're so big
- 1:24now. I mean, they are giant.
- 1:26And this is the time when you'll start to see insects or squash
- 1:30bores things showing up. Now, I have taken extra
- 1:33precautions. I've been very, very careful
- 1:35with the whole thing this year, making sure I've got what I
- 1:39needed in order to have them taken care of.
- 1:42And to my, the best of my knowledge, I've, I've done
- 1:45everything that I potentially could that I knew of.
- 1:48And then I come in looking down, seeing what ones are going to be
- 1:53ready to be picked shortly. And all of a sudden I see this
- 1:57bug that I don't recognize. And in gardening, you often will
- 2:01refer to things as friend or foe, just like with snakes,
- 2:03friend or foe. And you got to know
- 2:06instantaneously. And this bug had red on it.
- 2:09And often times red is a sign of danger.
- 2:13It's just very strange how that works out.
- 2:16So I'm out there, I see this bug and I'm like friend or foe.
- 2:22And I didn't have my phone with me, so I couldn't identify it in
- 2:26my insect. The tab for identifying insects,
- 2:31I've got an app for it, not a tap.
- 2:33And it identifies sickness in the plants.
- 2:36It identifies all kinds of different things.
- 2:38But I didn't have my phone with me, so I was like, I panicked
- 2:41and I was yelling to see if Mark was around so I could grab him
- 2:45and see if he had it on his phone.
- 2:47And he comes over and right away he knew it was, he's like, it's
- 2:51a, it's definitely faux. But let me look it up.
- 2:54And he looked it up and he's like, no, it's faux.
- 2:56And so I'm standing there and I'm like, OK.
- 2:58And then we drop it, it's gone. And I'm like, he captured it.
- 3:03We dropped it. It's gone.
- 3:04I'm like, great, and I felt myself get so frustrated that it
- 3:10was that it was gone because I'm like, oh, it's going to do
- 3:12damage. And I future paced that I was
- 3:16going to come out in the morning.
- 3:17There was going to be all kinds of problems.
- 3:19It's laying eggs what is happening and I just got
- 3:22completely freaked out by it. Now, why am I telling you this?
- 3:27Because one, just the very words friend or foe make you get into
- 3:32a heightened state either way, if it's a friend, you're like,
- 3:35OK, it's exciting. He's here, he's going to take
- 3:37care of things. And if it's foe, this is like a
- 3:40detrimental, I've got to do something about it.
- 3:42And we set ourselves up for these kind of emotional
- 3:46reactions to it. Now, the truth is that probably
- 3:49wasn't the only one. And if it is out there, I have
- 3:53to really like obviously keep an eye on it, but me getting
- 3:56panicked about it does no good. So I sat there for about 20
- 4:01minutes on the on the the fabric that's around the in the garden
- 4:06and ice looking for it. My head under the squash plants
- 4:11and squash plants have very rough leaves and I get a rash
- 4:14from them pretty quickly when they get on my skin had a tank
- 4:18top on it's hot, I'm sweating. I'm trying to find this bug,
- 4:22can't find the bug and I had to let it go.
- 4:24And I got to tell you, I'm I don't do good letting things go.
- 4:27I'm I'm just going to be very honest about it.
- 4:29I've been out here. I'm standing here right in front
- 4:32of them right now looking, looking, looking, watching all
- 4:35the bees go into the squash. I mean, it's awesome when
- 4:38they're I see them all out here doing the their work and
- 4:40checking on things. And we have so many bumblebees
- 4:44out here this morning. They are very excited and I'm
- 4:48just thrilled to say that I have not found any other bugs.
- 4:52I did not need to panic quite as much as I did and I I have not
- 4:57seen anything else happening. There's nothing destructive
- 5:00happening, but what it did do is triggering me that I need to go
- 5:04and start some new plants just in case we have another one of
- 5:09those rounds like we did a couple years ago where there you
- 5:13just wake up one day and your squash plant is dead.
- 5:16So I'm going to start planting. I had a plan to do succession
- 5:20planting anyway, and I'm going to do that.
- 5:23But I'm realizing over and over again how the emotional reaction
- 5:28does not need to be one that takes you out.
- 5:31And for me, it did do that for a while to the point where I got a
- 5:33rash on me. So I thought you'd all find that
- 5:36story funny because even the coach has the problem sometimes.
- 5:41So I hope you have a blessed day and I will see you tomorrow.
- 5:43Bye.
