Latest / Early Edition with Ryan Bridge / Ryan Bridge: Labour should steer well clear of an inheritance tax
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Right. It has just gone twenty seven minutes after five year.
- 0:02Speaker 1: On news Talk, said b I'm always a little bit
- 0:04Speaker 1: paranoid about what governments are planning and what kind of
- 0:07Speaker 1: taxes that they're scheming up. And if you look at
- 0:09Speaker 1: the UK, which is of recently elected governments, one of
- 0:13Speaker 1: the few that sort of has a mandate and is
- 0:15Speaker 1: actually functioning. I mean, look at France, or look at
- 0:18Speaker 1: the lame duck president in the United States. However, if
- 0:21Speaker 1: you look at the UK and Cares Starmer, they are
- 0:24Speaker 1: talking about and it is just muffles and quiet, secret
- 0:28Speaker 1: little meetings that have been reported in the press. The
- 0:31Speaker 1: potential for an inheritance fiddling with their inheritance tax. They
- 0:35Speaker 1: have one, we don't. On n Heather's show yesterday they
- 0:38Speaker 1: were speaking about with Jeff Nightingale about the potential for
- 0:41Speaker 1: our Labor Party to introduce one. I hate the idea
- 0:45Speaker 1: of it. In the UK it's forty percent and they
- 0:48Speaker 1: paid seven out of a half billion pounds and death
- 0:52Speaker 1: duties last year, which is a huge increase. And this
- 0:55Speaker 1: is largely because property prices have gone up. And what
- 0:58Speaker 1: governments all over the world are doing is running out
- 1:00Speaker 1: of money and they're running out of ways to tax people,
- 1:03Speaker 1: and this one's quite appealing to a lot of them.
- 1:06Speaker 1: And if you look at the UK in particular, so
- 1:08Speaker 1: the number paying death duties is expected to jump from
- 1:11Speaker 1: thirty three thousand this year to nearly forty four thousand
- 1:15Speaker 1: by the end of the next parliament. And that is
- 1:17Speaker 1: a very tempting number for a government that needs new
- 1:22Speaker 1: ways of finding revenue. And this is obviously the post
- 1:26Speaker 1: war baby boomer generation now approaching, you know, the average
- 1:29Speaker 1: life expectancy. So look out, governments all around the world
- 1:33Speaker 1: will be looking at ways to tax us more. I'm
- 1:37Speaker 1: not saying it's going to happen here. Obviously, there was
- 1:39Speaker 1: a hint on here this show yesterday that labor might
- 1:42Speaker 1: be planning something. I don't like the idea of this.
- 1:44Speaker 1: I think, just keep out of our business please, And
- 1:47Speaker 1: if somebody is dying in your family, the last thing
- 1:50Speaker 1: you want to think about is the forty percent you've
- 1:51Speaker 1: got to pay to the tax man. Right, We're coming
- 1:54Speaker 1: up to News after that, we are going to talk
- 1:58Speaker 1: about Pseudoe for Dream and star blowing up in the sky.
