- 0:00Welcome to Tabernacle Talk. Tabernacle Talk is a Bible study
- 0:03podcast brought from Tabernacle Baptist Church in Essex, MD.
- 0:07I'm your host, Brian Self. We hope this podcast encourages
- 0:10you to know Christ, grow in his word, and show his love to
- 0:14others. Let's dive right in.
- 0:15Welcome back to Tabernacle Talk that you're having a good day.
- 0:18Today we are in Psalm 1/19 and today we are in verses 29
- 0:23through 36, and these are all the verses that start with the
- 0:28Hebrew letter PE. PE, and that's spelled kind of
- 0:33transliteration in English is PE, not physical education, but
- 0:38all of these verses talking about the word and commands of
- 0:42God from verses 129 through 136. I'll start with that Hebrew
- 0:47letter. I'm going to do a quick count,
- 0:49real quick and see how many more episodes that we have in SOMA
- 0:5219. We've got 12345 left, 5 episodes
- 1:00left and seems crazy. Seems like I just kind of
- 1:04started going through these and it has been a big encouragement
- 1:09in my life. And my, my prayer is even as I'm
- 1:13continuing to work through book 5 of Psalms, that God will bring
- 1:18these truths up again and again and again in my heart.
- 1:22Well, let's dive into verse 129. I'm going to read through this
- 1:26particular section of Psalm 119 and we'll see what the Lord has
- 1:30for us today. Your decrees are wondrous,
- 1:33therefore I obey them. The revelation of Your words
- 1:37brings light and gives understanding to the
- 1:40inexperienced. I open my mouth and pants
- 1:44because I long for Your commands.
- 1:47Turn to me and be gracious to me, as is Your practice towards
- 1:52those who love Your name. Make my steps steady through
- 1:57Your promise. Don't let any sin dominate me.
- 2:02Redeem me from human oppression and I will keep your precepts.
- 2:06Make your face shine on your servant and teach me your
- 2:10statutes. My eyes pour out streams of
- 2:14tears because people do not follow Your instruction.
- 2:21Let's walk through this portion of Psalm 119 and see what God
- 2:26has for US. One thing I want us to be
- 2:28focusing on in particular in this episode is look at the
- 2:33descriptive words that imply passion.
- 2:38So descriptive words that imply passion.
- 2:40It is that God's word compels us to do something as a result of
- 2:46the attitude that we have towards it.
- 2:48Because I love Samantha, all want to get her A at the time
- 2:53I'm recording this, it's pre Christmas so I wanted to get her
- 2:58a gift and so I got her a gift. Or I want to give my kids a hug
- 3:03because I love them. Or I want to spend time with my
- 3:08best friends. And so I, I make plans to go and
- 3:12to see them. When you feel strongly about
- 3:16something, you actually want to do something as a result of it.
- 3:20And so here with God's word, there's some things that the
- 3:23psalmist says, because I am passionate about what God has
- 3:29said and the way God has called me to live my life, it's going
- 3:32to drive me to action. So let's look at these verse 129
- 3:38your decrees are wondrous. Therefore I obey them.
- 3:42He says God, your decrees what what you have declared as the
- 3:47king of everything. He says they are wondrous.
- 3:51This word is the the Hebrew word play.
- 3:57It is a miracle. It is something unusual.
- 4:01It's the the verb form of this is to do something wonderful.
- 4:07It is a miracle what God has given to us in the work.
- 4:12And I know I've spent perhaps too much time on the Internet
- 4:18trying to make sure that our our TikTok channel and the videos
- 4:23that I've been putting up there, both of the the podcast here
- 4:27that I'm doing as well as our as clips from our Sunday morning
- 4:31sermons, different things like that.
- 4:33Trying to make sure that it's well maintained and you don't
- 4:37have of, you know, Internet trolls or whatever that are
- 4:39spewing profanities or just being blasphemous or stuff on
- 4:43there. And I've seen over and over and
- 4:46over again over the last few days people that totally reject
- 4:51God. So they think and they they
- 4:56spend all of their time and attention and energy on the
- 5:02Internet being consumed with what they say is not reality or
- 5:07what is false. And here's the truth.
- 5:09I have never once devoted like my time or my attention to
- 5:15disavowing, you know, unicorns. I don't have to spend my time
- 5:22saying that perhaps the the gods of Hinduism are false gods
- 5:28because it, it just is not reality.
- 5:32And so I don't have to spend my time trying to dispute or fight
- 5:36that. And I certainly don't go out of
- 5:39my way to center my identity around something that I say is
- 5:45not real. I'm, I'm not an anti unicornist,
- 5:49but so many people, they are atheist like that.
- 5:53That's how they define themselves.
- 5:55You go to their social media and that's how they describe
- 5:58themselves. And all of the videos that they
- 6:01watch or that they repost or that they like or that they
- 6:03comment on everything is about, no, I reject this God.
- 6:10And frankly from Scripture, it's because the fool has said in his
- 6:14heart there is no God. They have a rejection of
- 6:19biblical truth from the word of God.
- 6:23However, for the child of God, we shouldn't be like them.
- 6:26We shouldn't be the ones that say no, no, I don't want to obey
- 6:30or listen to God. We should say God.
- 6:32Your decrees are wondrous. It is a miracle what you have
- 6:37given us in the Word that your word is truth and that Your Word
- 6:41gives me light for my life that when I follow it I win.
- 6:45My family wins, my church wins, my Co workers and my bosses win.
- 6:51Everyone wins when we follow the word of God and let the passion
- 6:58and the love for the miracle that is God's love letter to you
- 7:02in scripture. May that motivate you to say I'm
- 7:05not just going to hear about it. I'm not just going to listen to
- 7:09a sermon about it. I'm not just going to listen to
- 7:10songs about it. I'm going to obey the word of
- 7:13God and how God has told told me to order and to live my life.
- 7:18Verse 130 says the revelation of your words brings light and
- 7:23gives understanding to the inexperienced.
- 7:27I'm 28 years old. I'm just kind of getting started
- 7:30in life. My, my hope is that in 2026 that
- 7:35I will grow more in the Lord and that I will begin to see God not
- 7:42just working like in my church or in my city or in my
- 7:46neighborhood. Like I want to see God working
- 7:48in me in brand new ways that I've never seen before.
- 7:52Victory over sin like I've never experienced before in my life.
- 7:57A boldness to share my faith, A commitment to good works.
- 8:02A courage as a pastor to say things that I should say,
- 8:07especially when it's needed. Those are all things I've yet to
- 8:11experience in the way that I want to see it done.
- 8:15But how can I gain the experience?
- 8:17How can I know what I should do? How do I go forward in my life?
- 8:21Well, it is through the revelation of the words of God
- 8:25and it brings light. It shines out onto the path of
- 8:28where I should go. The kinds of things that I
- 8:31should say, the attitudes that I should have while I do it.
- 8:35And God can give me understanding so that even if I
- 8:38haven't experienced something yet, I can still have
- 8:41understanding about that thing. Now there have been hardships in
- 8:46my life that I've gone through. I know plenty of people in my
- 8:50life and my friends and and family members that have gone
- 8:53through way harder and and tougher things than I've gone
- 8:56through. But one joy for me as a
- 9:01Christian and as a pastor is that the Word of God speaks to
- 9:04things that, though I have not yet personally experienced it, I
- 9:08can rely on what the Word says and I can actually provide some
- 9:12comfort and some light to people.
- 9:14Because it's not. What does Brian think about the
- 9:16situation or what would Brian's solution be?
- 9:20You know, I might have good ideas about things.
- 9:23I don't really know, frankly, I I don't care as much what
- 9:26Brian's solutions are. I want to know what is the word
- 9:29of God have to say, What's God's solution to my problems and the
- 9:33problems of those within my church or within my family?
- 9:37I want to point people to the Lord.
- 9:39And so feelings of inexperience, feelings of confusion or
- 9:45darkness that I don't know what I'm supposed to do.
- 9:48It ought to spark me with a passion to say I'm going to
- 9:51God's word because even though I don't know what to do, he who
- 9:55knows what to do next. Verse 131 I open my mouth and
- 9:59pant because I long for your commands here.
- 10:03It's it's kind of like humorous thing when I think open my mouth
- 10:07and and pant, I immediately think of a dog that's going
- 10:11like, and that's that's just the mental picture that I have.
- 10:15I don't know all of the different animals that that
- 10:18would be panting during this time that the psalmist wrote
- 10:21this. We can think about the Psalm 42,
- 10:25and there's a very famous hymn written from that.
- 10:28As the deer panteth for the water, so my soul longeth after
- 10:32you. And here that's the desire that
- 10:36the psalmist has for the Word of God, that it is I am desperate
- 10:42for the Word. Are you desperate every day that
- 10:45you want to spend time in the Word of God, you want to hear
- 10:48from Him, that you need to know what you're supposed to be
- 10:52doing, because you are not cut out to do this on your own?
- 10:56Do you have a fervent desire to hear and to obey the commands of
- 11:01God? One great way to gauge that in
- 11:04the morning, what do you wake up and do?
- 11:07I'll tell you guys, sometimes I fail even as a pastor.
- 11:11And when I get up, you know, checking Facebook or checking,
- 11:16you know, whatever social media thing, instead of going straight
- 11:20to the Word. Now I'm really thankful even
- 11:22with my phone, I at least get the option every morning of I
- 11:27can choose to listen to a sermon or I can listen to a Bible study
- 11:32podcast, or I can listen, you know, even if I want to put
- 11:35myself to sleep, I can turn on Tabernacle talk and just go to
- 11:39sleep listening to myself. But but I can choose even in the
- 11:45morning, even with my cell phone to use it to follow God and to
- 11:49pursue God's commands and what God says.
- 11:51Or I can just go with, all right, what's going to give me,
- 11:55you know, kind of the dopamine hit of Oh yeah, five people
- 11:59liked my photo. I'm real big stuff.
- 12:01Now I I get to choose. What do I long for?
- 12:05And so it is with you. Do you long for the Word of God?
- 12:09Verse 132, the psalmist says, turn to me and be gracious to
- 12:14me, as is your practice towards those who love your name.
- 12:20I love this, especially as we think about the Word of God,
- 12:23that when I am reading, when I am thinking about God's Word,
- 12:29I'm not just interacting with, you know, black words on white
- 12:33pages. I am actually entering into
- 12:38God's revelation of himself to me, and God is present when I am
- 12:46diving into the Word. Is that the way that you think
- 12:50about the Word that as you read like #1 the Holy Spirit is
- 12:55always with us? But #2 certainly we recognize
- 12:59that the Spirit gave us the Word of God.
- 13:02We read about that in Second Peter chapter 1.
- 13:05I think it's been probably it was two years ago now that we
- 13:10that we began going through a second Peter.
- 13:14But as the word is given us, as the Spirit has given us the word
- 13:18of God, which is the declaration of God himself, He is not just
- 13:23within us, but he is working in a unique way through his Word.
- 13:28His word gives us life. His Word gives us direction.
- 13:32And so as you're reading, are you praying God turn to me, be
- 13:36gracious to me. You can think of here even the
- 13:40Levitical blessing that was said over the priest.
- 13:43There's a great song about it, the blessing by Elevation
- 13:46Worship the Lord bless you and keep you.
- 13:49Make His face shine upon you and be gracious to you.
- 13:53The Lord turn his face towards you and give you peace.
- 13:57And here that's what this verse makes me think of God as.
- 14:01I'm in Your word. Would you put your attention
- 14:04towards me? Would you give me Your grace so
- 14:06that I can live my day in light of Your Spirit moving and
- 14:12operating in me? And then I love here?
- 14:14He says, as is your practice towards those who love your
- 14:18name. God is used to paying attention
- 14:21to and giving grace towards those who love Him, that want to
- 14:25see His glory, His Kingdom come on earth as it is in heaven.
- 14:30Is that what you love? Do you love the name of the
- 14:33Lord? Do you love His authority, His
- 14:36right to rule? And are you operating in respect
- 14:40of that name? Verse 133, Make my steps steady
- 14:45through your promise. Don't let any sin dominate me.
- 14:51I love this phrase here. Make my steps steady.
- 14:54God, I just want to walk with you.
- 14:58I just want to be faithful over and over and over again that
- 15:03it's one faithful act after another that I'm able to say,
- 15:07OK, today I'm going to treat my wife like Jesus has treated me,
- 15:11with love and with care. I'm going to raise my kids in
- 15:15the right way, telling them what God told me when I was a kid.
- 15:20And I'm going to encourage them and their walks with the Lord as
- 15:23I interact with my coworkers. You know, I, I've got here at
- 15:27the church, all two of them, I've got my wife and then we've
- 15:30got our custodian, Janice. And I, I want to be a good
- 15:34coworker to them in the way God would have me to be with, with
- 15:38my fellow church members. I want to encourage them.
- 15:41I want to be kind in the way that I interact with them.
- 15:45I want to be faithful, to share the Word of God with them and
- 15:49with the lost that I interact with God.
- 15:53Would you make my steps steady, A consistent, faithful walk with
- 15:57God that is so often we're looking for the mountaintop
- 16:02experience. We're looking for the parting of
- 16:04the Red Sea, and we're not just looking for God for these 40
- 16:08years in the wilderness. Would you help my shoes not to
- 16:12waste away? Would you give me this morning
- 16:15the manna that I need to eat for the day?
- 16:19I I think there is such benefit in just asking the Lord for
- 16:23faithful, steady steps in our walk with him.
- 16:27How does that happen? Through the word that we know
- 16:29what we're supposed to do and the Holy Spirit of God empowers
- 16:32us to do those things each and every day.
- 16:36Then I love their don't let any sin dominate me.
- 16:40And that's what sin does. It let it destroys us.
- 16:44Probably one of the most visible ways that we see this happen is
- 16:49with addiction, whether substance addiction with with
- 16:55alcohol, with drugs, frankly, even sometimes with gluttony
- 17:00that you can see people that are, you know, massively obese
- 17:06or overweight and sin dominated their existence.
- 17:12And so then they didn't feel like there was any way out of
- 17:15it. You can see those that would be
- 17:19even on the side of the road begging as a result of alcohol
- 17:23addiction through which they lost their family, they lost
- 17:26their jobs, they, they lost the friendships that they had or
- 17:30those struggling with drug addiction.
- 17:33And you'd say, wow, sin is so deadly.
- 17:36But can I tell you it's not just substance addiction that can
- 17:40dominate you? Your pride can dominate you.
- 17:43Your cruelty and unkindness and unforgiveness and bitterness can
- 17:49dominate your life. Sexual immorality can dominate
- 17:52your life. I think it's very interesting,
- 17:55even in pop culture that you have movies that have been made.
- 17:59I think they're of 1. Just so we're clear, I haven't
- 18:03seen the movie, but with Joseph Gordon Levitt several years back
- 18:08that looked at addiction to pornography and how it damages
- 18:13relationships. And I think it's so interesting
- 18:15that even our world sees that and they recognize that we can
- 18:20become dominated by sin and our request should be God.
- 18:23Help me to faithfully take steps towards you.
- 18:27Don't allow sin to direct where I go.
- 18:30May you direct where I go through your promise.
- 18:33Verse 134 redeem me from human oppression and I will keep your
- 18:38precepts. He says God rescue me that I'm
- 18:41not destroyed by people and I will do what you ask.
- 18:45I I think here there's just such a grounding to go.
- 18:48God, sometimes it's really hard. Some of you are in really rough
- 18:53relationships, perhaps even in your marriage.
- 18:56I know I have friends that are in that scenario and in a tough
- 19:00relationship, in a tough marriage or perhaps the
- 19:04situation where you're Co parenting or something with
- 19:07people that that can be a really, really hard time.
- 19:10And you can pray this prayer request God redeem me from human
- 19:14oppression and I will keep your precepts.
- 19:16God, would you provide a way out?
- 19:19Would you provide peace? Would you provide joy?
- 19:22Would you allow me to be able to get out of this incredibly
- 19:26difficult situation? And as a result, I'm going to
- 19:29glorify you. Verse 135 Make your face shine
- 19:34on your servant, and teach me your statutes.
- 19:38It is the recognition of God's affection and care towards us
- 19:44here shown by making His face shine on us, that He is looking
- 19:49at us. You can think of the old hymn,
- 19:51Turn your eyes upon Jesus, look full in his wonderful face, and
- 19:56the things of earth will grow strangely dim in the light of
- 20:00his glory and grace. Here, that's the prayer request.
- 20:03God help me to see you for who you are.
- 20:07And when that happens, I'm going to learn to be like you.
- 20:10Spend time looking at Jesus, looking at the Lord, looking at
- 20:14his character in the Word of God, and you will become like
- 20:18him as you behold him. I think I've mentioned before
- 20:21the the verse in one of Paul's letters to the Corinthians where
- 20:24he says through the Holy Spirit of God, beholding the glory of
- 20:28the Lord, we are changed into that glory day by day.
- 20:33And what a wonderful truth that that is.
- 20:36And then verse 136, the ending of this section, he says, my
- 20:39eyes pour out streams of tears because people do not follow
- 20:45your instruction. Does it grieve you when others
- 20:48do not walk with the Lord? Are you saddened by the news
- 20:52that that a family member has rejected Christ, though they
- 20:57might have grown up knowing about Christ?
- 20:59Does it grieve you when a friend that that used to be at the
- 21:04church has now walked away from the faith or has been dominated
- 21:09by sin and so now is no longer with their fellow believers,
- 21:13with their brothers and sisters in the Lord as a result of sin
- 21:17that dominated and took control of their life?
- 21:21Are you saddened by your sin when you fail the Lord?
- 21:25Do you experience grief? Do you repent?
- 21:28Do you, as James instructs us to do in James 4, do we weep and
- 21:33cry and mourn as a result of the fact that we have rebelled
- 21:38against our God? Do you have any emotions about
- 21:43failing the Lord's path? Can I encourage you?
- 21:48If you're like, I don't, I don't really feel that that that's not
- 21:53my response to people sinning. I don't really cry about that.
- 21:58Can I encourage you? This is something Scripture
- 22:00talks about over and over and over again.
- 22:03You can pray and you can ask the Lord God, would you give me a
- 22:05tender heart that I would recognize sin and be grieved by
- 22:10it? That is absolutely something
- 22:13that the Spirit will help you to do because here's what happens
- 22:17when we become numb to sin, that it does not grieve our hearts.
- 22:21When we grieve the Holy Spirit, we become comfortable with sin
- 22:27and then sin dominates us because we, as one passage puts
- 22:32it, we forget how to blush. We no longer feel bad for sin,
- 22:37and so we just continue in it. And so let's ask the Lord God,
- 22:40would you help me to maintain a a fresh heart, a tender heart, a
- 22:45heart that can feel conviction when I have failed you.
- 22:51And as we do that, we will be the better for it.
- 22:54All of our relationships will be the better for it.
- 22:57And most importantly, our relationship with God will be
- 23:00the better for it. I hope that this portion of
- 23:03Scripture has been an encouragement to you.
- 23:07Remember, when you're passionate about something, it prompts you
- 23:10to action. Are you passionate about God,
- 23:13His word? Are you passionate about hating
- 23:16sin? Are you passionate about loving
- 23:19and following and pursuing Jesus and becoming like Him?
- 23:23Because if we are passionate about it, it's going to result
- 23:26in action. Thanks for tuning in.
- 23:28See you next episode.
