- 0:02Speaker 1: Welcome into JAG's am. The preseason is done. Regular season
- 0:06Speaker 1: around the corner. But we've got a hurricane on Wednesday.
- 0:08Speaker 1: What do I need to know from my first hurricane?
- 0:10Speaker 2: You guys, you're the weather guy. Yeah, it'll be winding rain.
- 0:15Speaker 3: Okay. Should I get snacks?
- 0:17Speaker 2: Yes, snacks and make sure you have coffee.
- 0:19Speaker 1: Okay, John good booze, I should know. Welcome in tot Jagson,
- 0:42Speaker 1: presented by Carshield or here in Hyundai Studios, Kai Nannie Stevens,
- 0:46Speaker 1: Brian Sexton, John Oser, sober Sally this morning. Of course
- 0:50Speaker 1: you got your coffee, but we will have our booze
- 0:53Speaker 1: for the hurricane.
- 0:53Speaker 3: That is a good recommendation.
- 0:54Speaker 4: I do appreciate that.
- 0:55Speaker 5: Oh.
- 0:55Speaker 4: I think most people around here they're already stocked up. Yeah,
- 0:59Speaker 4: they know that, like from day one, as soon as
- 1:01Speaker 4: you turn hey it's twenty one.
- 1:03Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:03Speaker 5: I was listening on the way in and heard my
- 1:06Speaker 5: buddy Mike Burush talking about it, and he said, it's
- 1:08Speaker 5: you know, it's that rare storm that comes up out
- 1:09Speaker 5: of the Caribbean that's going to kind of bend to
- 1:11Speaker 5: the east, and it looks like it's gonna come over us.
- 1:13Speaker 5: You know, during the day on Wednesday and probably still
- 1:15Speaker 5: have some hurricane force wins. I mean no meteorologists, but
- 1:19Speaker 5: you kind of learned to be one. We live in Florida,
- 1:21Speaker 5: so listen to Burish. That's the best advice I can
- 1:24Speaker 5: give you.
- 1:24Speaker 1: All Right, I appreciate that start with our big things.
- 1:26Speaker 1: The preseason is behind us. Finally we got that fast
- 1:28Speaker 1: start we've been talking about. Doug Peterson is saying he
- 1:31Speaker 1: wants to get that fast start from the offense, and
- 1:34Speaker 1: other than a little hiccup from Tank, pretty good out
- 1:36Speaker 1: of the gate. Is that what you were hoping to see?
- 1:38Speaker 5: It was, you know, press Taylor said last week and
- 1:41Speaker 5: then was followed up with the coach in the quarterback
- 1:43Speaker 5: where they talked about clean, clean, clean, and man did
- 1:45Speaker 5: it look clean for the first eleven plays John and
- 1:48Speaker 5: they mixed in the pass and the run beautifully. That
- 1:51Speaker 5: was a picture perfect drive until Bixby was a little careless.
- 1:55Speaker 2: With the football.
- 1:56Speaker 4: Yeah, and I thought it was exactly what you wanted.
- 1:59Speaker 4: And I don't worry about preseason pumbls. I don't think
- 2:01Speaker 4: Tank's going to be a fumbler. It struck me and
- 2:06Speaker 4: it's hard to put into words, but yes, they were clean.
- 2:10Speaker 1: But.
- 2:12Speaker 4: They played with this energy and with this confidence like
- 2:19Speaker 4: they expected to do what they did and what they
- 2:22Speaker 4: wanted to do is I hate the phrase send a message,
- 2:26Speaker 4: but that felt like they were sort of sending a
- 2:28Speaker 4: message of this is what we are. And I wish
- 2:31Speaker 4: I had a better way to put it than that,
- 2:33Speaker 4: but there was an energy to it, there was an
- 2:34Speaker 4: aggressiveness to it, and there was a confidence that every
- 2:38Speaker 4: play was going to work, and it was I don't
- 2:42Speaker 4: get excited about preseason, but sometimes teams start to look
- 2:46Speaker 4: like they're going to be something that looked like what
- 2:50Speaker 4: this team wants to be, and it was impressed to
- 2:52Speaker 4: see them do that in that final warm up. So
- 2:57Speaker 4: many times we've talked on these shows for years and
- 2:59Speaker 4: years is about what you might see. Think they gave
- 3:03Speaker 4: the Jaguars fans and inkling of what they're going to
- 3:06Speaker 4: be this year.
- 3:06Speaker 5: Well, and that's really the point is is what they
- 3:09Speaker 5: are looked good. And that's before they've had a lot
- 3:12Speaker 5: of time, I mean, think about where they could be
- 3:14Speaker 5: in November. The production crew that does our television preseason
- 3:18Speaker 5: broadcast is from Saint Louis and a lot of those
- 3:20Speaker 5: guys used to work around the Rams, and in nineteen
- 3:23Speaker 5: ninety nine, you know, they were telling us after the
- 3:25Speaker 5: game they could see the greatest show on turf starting
- 3:28Speaker 5: to evolve, and of course it exploded pretty early in
- 3:31Speaker 5: the season. It became something special and no one was
- 3:34Speaker 5: anticipating it because remember Kurt Warner was the third team
- 3:37Speaker 5: quarterback who had to take over for the injured Trent Green,
- 3:40Speaker 5: and it just sort of evolved into what it became.
- 3:44Speaker 5: I get the sense that we could see something that's
- 3:46Speaker 5: going to have a lot of people going, WHOA where
- 3:47Speaker 5: did that come from.
- 3:48Speaker 1: One of the things for me is, specifically I've talked
- 3:50Speaker 1: about it in practice, Trevor seems to be not going
- 3:53Speaker 1: to Doug as much for obviously for you know, counsel
- 3:56Speaker 1: and discussing things, but not on how to run things.
- 3:58Speaker 1: And when you see him running all now, it looks
- 4:00Speaker 1: a little bit more like he's in control of everything
- 4:03Speaker 1: that's going on, which is what you want to see
- 4:04Speaker 1: out of your quarterback. I think he missed that is
- 4:07Speaker 1: that that third down pass is a Jones and then
- 4:09Speaker 1: they went forward and fourth down that was kind of
- 4:11Speaker 1: like him being like, all right, I got this like
- 4:13Speaker 1: and kind of going with it that way. And that's
- 4:14Speaker 1: something you know, when you have a young quarterback, you
- 4:16Speaker 1: love to see that.
- 4:17Speaker 5: He said on Thursday when we met before the game,
- 4:20Speaker 5: that he has a strong confidence in his command of
- 4:24Speaker 5: what they're asking him to do because they have a
- 4:26Speaker 5: great line of communication between Mike McCoy, Press Taylor, and
- 4:29Speaker 5: Doug Peterson. They're all on the same page and he
- 4:31Speaker 5: feels comfortable with it, which John is exactly what you
- 4:34Speaker 5: expect one of those elite guys to be able to do,
- 4:36Speaker 5: even in their third season.
- 4:38Speaker 4: Yeah, we're going to talk about Trevor so much. I
- 4:41Speaker 4: think what impressed me the most on Saturday was it
- 4:47Speaker 4: looks like the run is going to be there for
- 4:50Speaker 4: them much more. And I'm gonna say we didn't anticipate
- 4:55Speaker 4: them being a good running team. I don't know if
- 4:58Speaker 4: we expected to see the ETN look quite that good,
- 5:04Speaker 4: quite that confident, quite that strong. At as Doug said,
- 5:08Speaker 4: they were blocking, the offensive line was playing on the
- 5:11Speaker 4: other side of the line of scrimmage, and when you
- 5:13Speaker 4: had Bigsby to that, it just feels like there's an
- 5:17Speaker 4: element with this running game. We've all talked about it,
- 5:21Speaker 4: but almost as an aside and almost like, yeah, it
- 5:24Speaker 4: could be good. I think the running game it's going
- 5:29Speaker 4: it's not going to get the opportunity to be what
- 5:31Speaker 4: the seven team was. I'm not going to compared to
- 5:34Speaker 4: that because that was a team that ran its way
- 5:35Speaker 4: to what twelve and four record? Yeah, eleven and five,
- 5:38Speaker 4: and they had one hundred and fifty six yards a
- 5:40Speaker 4: game rushing. So this is a different style team. But
- 5:44Speaker 4: these two backs yea early on the game and I
- 5:49Speaker 4: hate to even not mention now journ just because he
- 5:51Speaker 4: looks really, really good.
- 5:52Speaker 2: But those first two.
- 5:55Speaker 4: It's going to be interesting to see how Doug and
- 5:58Speaker 4: Press want to call these games, because I think they're
- 6:01Speaker 4: going to try to figure out away bus as possible
- 6:04Speaker 4: to use this run to set it up. And it's
- 6:07Speaker 4: different now, by the way, different looking offense.
- 6:09Speaker 5: I think the earnest is past hasty and they like hasty. Yeah,
- 6:12Speaker 5: but that tells you how much they like DearS Johnson.
- 6:15Speaker 1: Let's go on to big thing number two, because it's
- 6:17Speaker 1: going to be about who makes the cut. We're going
- 6:18Speaker 1: to talk specifically about players that we have, you know,
- 6:21Speaker 1: either that may have been on the bubble that we
- 6:23Speaker 1: think will get in or maybe the first guy out later.
- 6:25Speaker 1: But just in general, I want to just talk about
- 6:27Speaker 1: this scene because I know you guys have been around
- 6:28Speaker 1: for a while. This has to be one of the
- 6:30Speaker 1: teams that has retained the most players and probably the
- 6:34Speaker 1: least amount of spots available from year to year, maybe
- 6:36Speaker 1: just from last year, because I think when we talked
- 6:38Speaker 1: to Doug, he said, you know, maybe five fish.
- 6:41Speaker 5: Well, generally in a season, you'll see the roster turnover,
- 6:44Speaker 5: not necessarily starters, John, but the roster. You know, about
- 6:46Speaker 5: a third of the roster on a yearly basis will
- 6:49Speaker 5: turn over. And that's among teams at the bottom. At
- 6:52Speaker 5: the top, it's a little bit less than that. There
- 6:54Speaker 5: weren't that many jobs available because they retained everybody from
- 6:57Speaker 5: last year. If not everybody, right, arden Key didn't come back.
- 7:00Speaker 5: There's a couple of those guys, But for the most part,
- 7:02Speaker 5: this is a roster that comes back from last year
- 7:06Speaker 5: with just a few jobs open.
- 7:07Speaker 4: Yeah, I still think you're gonna find eight, nine, ten
- 7:10Speaker 4: rookies just because they're gonna keep these guys on the team.
- 7:15Speaker 4: And you always have a little roster churn just because
- 7:17Speaker 4: at the bottom of the roster year contracts run out
- 7:20Speaker 4: and you've got guys that you know are going to
- 7:21Speaker 4: replay one thing I was thinking this weekend about I'm
- 7:28Speaker 4: not trying to short change the receivers on this year.
- 7:30Speaker 4: We talk about how deep the receivers are, and they
- 7:34Speaker 4: are deep. One reason I think they look deep is
- 7:37Speaker 4: a lot of times they're catching passes from a real
- 7:38Speaker 4: good quarterback now, so the whole the whole thing looks better.
- 7:43Speaker 4: So guys are performing better in it. Does that makes sense?
- 7:46Speaker 2: I mean it's.
- 7:49Speaker 4: I think there were guys in the past who fans
- 7:52Speaker 4: have dismissed and we're off the team quickly, who may
- 7:55Speaker 4: have looked good in what's going on now because you're
- 7:58Speaker 4: a part of something that's functioning very highly. So that
- 8:02Speaker 4: was just a little thought. Yeah.
- 8:03Speaker 5: I mean it is Manning with the offensive line, he'd
- 8:05Speaker 5: lose an offensive lineman or two even and still play'd.
- 8:09Speaker 5: I remember him making Charlie Jones, who was a left
- 8:12Speaker 5: tackle for them. I think it was eight maybe nine,
- 8:15Speaker 5: and I'm thinking, well, here's an advantage for the jag Wars
- 8:17Speaker 5: to take advantage of it. They couldn't touch it because
- 8:19Speaker 5: Manning was so good.
- 8:20Speaker 1: Our last big thing of the day is going to
- 8:22Speaker 1: be precedent because Saturday's game was cut short after an
- 8:27Speaker 1: injury to Dolphins player that both coaches and player reps
- 8:31Speaker 1: came in and decided they didn't want to finish out
- 8:33Speaker 1: the game. I think there's eight and a half and
- 8:34Speaker 1: eight change left in the fourth quarter, and that's the
- 8:37Speaker 1: second preseason game this year that's been called early. The
- 8:41Speaker 1: Packers and Patriots called their game after a similar injury
- 8:44Speaker 1: to one of our Patriots players. And just Brian and
- 8:48Speaker 1: I feel very strongly about this, just the precedent that
- 8:50Speaker 1: it sets without anything written down about what they're going
- 8:53Speaker 1: to do in a situation like this.
- 8:54Speaker 5: Well, I have two questions, and look, I have lots
- 8:56Speaker 5: of questions, and I've been thinking about this, and you
- 8:58Speaker 5: and I talked about it last week a little bit, and
- 9:01Speaker 5: we elected not to make it an issue because it
- 9:02Speaker 5: didn't have enough local at this point. But John, would
- 9:05Speaker 5: they have canceled that game if it had happened in
- 9:07Speaker 5: the first quarter?
- 9:10Speaker 4: Probably not.
- 9:12Speaker 5: So what's the difference between the first and the fourth
- 9:14Speaker 5: and how the players feel, because that was what both
- 9:17Speaker 5: Doug and Mike McDaniel cited was the way that the
- 9:21Speaker 5: players were reacting and they were, you know, concerned for
- 9:24Speaker 5: their players, and then the second question is, well, it
- 9:28Speaker 5: would they cancel.
- 9:28Speaker 2: It on opening day?
- 9:30Speaker 1: No?
- 9:31Speaker 5: Okay, So then what's the difference between players these feelings.
- 9:34Speaker 4: It's pretty season well, okay, the difference.
- 9:37Speaker 2: But they didn't cite that that was the thing.
- 9:39Speaker 5: They cited the fact that they were worried about their
- 9:41Speaker 5: players and how their players felt well. And what I'm
- 9:44Speaker 5: saying is that can't be the criteria. There has to
- 9:47Speaker 5: be a plan for how this goes forward, not just
- 9:50Speaker 5: two coaches, two players and the official making the decision.
- 9:54Speaker 4: Well, I do think it doesn't realist to think that
- 9:57Speaker 4: it you look at preseason games through a different lens anyway.
- 10:04Speaker 2: I get that to a degree, but this is still precedent. No,
- 10:07Speaker 2: I don't.
- 10:08Speaker 4: I don't think they would stop this game during the
- 10:12Speaker 4: regular season, mainly because he had movement in his extremities
- 10:18Speaker 4: and he was conscious.
- 10:20Speaker 2: They stopped it on January second, on Monday Night football.
- 10:23Speaker 2: For Lamar Hamlin.
- 10:24Speaker 4: That was a significantly scariest thing.
- 10:27Speaker 5: But you get what I'm saying, though, There's got to
- 10:28Speaker 5: be something to be president of a delineation here on
- 10:32Speaker 5: how you're going to do it. Because a couple of things.
- 10:34Speaker 5: You've got customers who buy your tickets, fill your parking lot,
- 10:38Speaker 5: your beer, your hot dogs, your sodas. Right, you've got
- 10:41Speaker 5: television partners who have customers who buy the advertisements that
- 10:45Speaker 5: pay the fee. And now gambling's involved in this as well.
- 10:48Speaker 5: And so if you're canceling games and you're not gambling
- 10:51Speaker 5: on preseason I'm assuming that we're talking about the regular
- 10:54Speaker 5: season here. I guess what I'm saying is, I'd like
- 10:57Speaker 5: to see the commissioner who represents the owners and the
- 11:01Speaker 5: players Association, who represents the players and the networks, because
- 11:04Speaker 5: they're a full partner in this, and then gambling is too. Now,
- 11:07Speaker 5: I mean the league is they're in those waters.
- 11:09Speaker 1: I don't know if you can put gambling into this
- 11:11Speaker 1: because there's a million things that affect gambling.
- 11:13Speaker 5: Well, okay, but you have to understand when you're taking
- 11:15Speaker 5: the money from them.
- 11:16Speaker 1: Now, oh well that's a whole Well they are, they're
- 11:18Speaker 1: taking their partners right, right, But they chose.
- 11:20Speaker 5: To but they chose to get which is why you
- 11:23Speaker 5: have to at least consider it. And what I'm saying
- 11:25Speaker 5: is there needs to be a criteria of what and
- 11:28Speaker 5: how If it's life threatening. DeMar Hamlin was dead, they
- 11:32Speaker 5: resuscitated him. Okay, that's the criteria. But if you I'll
- 11:36Speaker 5: give you a great example, and Darryl Stingley, Mike Utley,
- 11:40Speaker 5: Dennis Bird, Ryan Shazier, four players from nineteen seventy eight
- 11:44Speaker 5: a preseason game to December of two, twenty seventeen, who
- 11:48Speaker 5: are all to some degree paralyzed. Okay, and then there's
- 11:52Speaker 5: Joe Eisman, which is probably the most gruesome injury I've
- 11:54Speaker 5: ever seen. You were a Redskins fan, I know you
- 11:56Speaker 5: probably think the same way. On Monday Night football in
- 11:59Speaker 5: nineteen eighty five, they all went back and plagued. All right,
- 12:03Speaker 5: But if you're saying, this is absolutely one where we cancel,
- 12:07Speaker 5: But what about this because that injury, I don't know
- 12:10Speaker 5: if you've ever seen it, but it was a complex,
- 12:12Speaker 5: compound fracture where the leg did this, and it was
- 12:16Speaker 5: hard to watch then and it's hard to watch now.
- 12:19Speaker 5: And if players are going to be disturbed by the neck,
- 12:23Speaker 5: they're gonna be disturbed by that. I just want there
- 12:25Speaker 5: to be some clarification. I'm going to speak at noon.
- 12:27Speaker 5: I spoke yesterday and I was asked the question and
- 12:30Speaker 5: I couldn't give the answer. They said, would they cancel
- 12:33Speaker 5: in the regular season, and I could only say I
- 12:35Speaker 5: don't think so. So I would like to see if
- 12:39Speaker 5: you're going to cancel games, yeah, which I think is
- 12:41Speaker 5: dangerous to do for all kinds of reasons. I'd just
- 12:45Speaker 5: like to see somebody say, here's the rules.
- 12:47Speaker 4: My guess is what they'll do is they'll have a
- 12:50Speaker 4: hard fast rule during regular season and probably you know,
- 12:56Speaker 4: I see your point. I would think they would get
- 13:00Speaker 4: very close to we're just not stopping under the regular
- 13:02Speaker 4: season and then during the preseason saying it can be
- 13:06Speaker 4: a coach's decision, much like was made. But I do
- 13:09Speaker 4: get think these two back to back incidences, the tone
- 13:14Speaker 4: has clearly changed, the mood has clearly changed.
- 13:16Speaker 2: So I think you're right.
- 13:17Speaker 5: I think there is that to be I had a
- 13:18Speaker 5: woman to me, I don't want my son to play football.
- 13:21Speaker 5: Change my mind based on the last two Saturday nights.
- 13:23Speaker 5: She was, if they're canceling games, then it must not
- 13:26Speaker 5: be safe. Well, look, the game has never been safer.
- 13:29Speaker 5: I coached youth football for ten years and I had
- 13:31Speaker 5: to get certified by USA Football, which is run by
- 13:34Speaker 5: some former NFL types like Bill Pollian, and it's taught
- 13:38Speaker 5: heads up. There's a story this morning in the Athletic
- 13:41Speaker 5: about I think it's the icis. I don't know whether
- 13:44Speaker 5: it's pronounced vicious or vicious, but position specific helmets and
- 13:48Speaker 5: I know the guys at right now and the things
- 13:50Speaker 5: that they're doing. Player safety has never been more at
- 13:52Speaker 5: the forefront, and I think that it should be right.
- 13:56Speaker 5: But you still have to take into account the business
- 13:59Speaker 5: side of this, and remember all the consternation about if
- 14:02Speaker 5: they had had to play the Bills and the Chiefs
- 14:04Speaker 5: in Atlanta in the AFC Championship game because they canceled
- 14:08Speaker 5: the Bills Bengals game. You just have to have a
- 14:12Speaker 5: set of criteria that everyone understands.
- 14:14Speaker 1: And I think that that's what eventually will happen. I
- 14:17Speaker 1: don't know if it's this year or whenever they have
- 14:19Speaker 1: player meetings next.
- 14:20Speaker 3: But here's the physicians.
- 14:22Speaker 5: Peter King's Money Football Morning in America column is the
- 14:25Speaker 5: most prominent column. It's a must read for most people
- 14:28Speaker 5: in the NFL. Last week he wrote extensively about the
- 14:32Speaker 5: decision in the Packers Patriots game. This week this morning,
- 14:36Speaker 5: not one word was written in this column about what
- 14:39Speaker 5: happened on this field. So are we now just saying, well,
- 14:42Speaker 5: that's normal that what we do or are we saying, well,
- 14:44Speaker 5: that's what we do in the preseason. Again, some clarification
- 14:48Speaker 5: is really important for the league going forward.
- 14:50Speaker 4: My guess is what will happen, and this is probably
- 14:53Speaker 4: this may sound cold, but I think what they'll eventually
- 14:58Speaker 4: come to the players excuse me, the player association and
- 15:01Speaker 4: the league office will get together and they will say
- 15:04Speaker 4: we're not stopping any more games. And it's not a
- 15:09Speaker 4: matter of coldness. It's more a matter of we've looked
- 15:13Speaker 4: at this, we understand and in the preseason, I think
- 15:18Speaker 4: that fine. In the regular season, my guess is they
- 15:21Speaker 4: will look at it and say the players will have
- 15:24Speaker 4: to weigh in and say, we understand the risk involved,
- 15:27Speaker 4: We're okay with moving forward no matter what. They do
- 15:29Speaker 4: that when they sign their contract, right right, But let's understand, though,
- 15:32Speaker 4: this is a game that is the most viewed game
- 15:34Speaker 4: in America because there is risk. People they don't watch
- 15:38Speaker 4: basketball like they watch the NFL. Right, and think about this.
- 15:43Speaker 4: College football drives that entire scene, and the NCAA Tournament
- 15:47Speaker 4: is one of the great sporting events every year, but
- 15:49Speaker 4: it's all college football that drives it. Football drives television revenue,
- 15:54Speaker 4: which creates salary opportunities for coaches and players. So there's
- 15:57Speaker 4: risk associated with it, and if you take the risk
- 15:59Speaker 4: out of the game, it's it's not nearly as popular.
- 16:01Speaker 2: So you've got to take.
- 16:02Speaker 5: All those into account when you're looking at the big
- 16:04Speaker 5: picture here, and what I'm saying is not my game.
- 16:06Speaker 5: So you all decide what you want to do, but
- 16:08Speaker 5: just clarify it. Make it simple so that everybody knows.
- 16:12Speaker 1: I think we'll get there eventually. Obviously, the decision is
- 16:15Speaker 1: still up to the coaches and the players at this point.
- 16:17Speaker 1: At least it was on Saturday and they made that
- 16:19Speaker 1: decision for themselves.
- 16:20Speaker 2: It's up to the owners now. The owners have to
- 16:22Speaker 2: weigh in on this.
- 16:24Speaker 1: When they do, we will then know coming up we're
- 16:26Speaker 1: going to do highlights from Saturday's game, and then we
- 16:29Speaker 1: will also talk about who's going to make this fifty
- 16:31Speaker 1: three man roster.
- 16:38Speaker 3: Welcome back to jags Am.
- 16:39Speaker 1: You can sign up your furry friend for the Jaguars

- 16:51Speaker 1: Jaguars dot com Slash Promotion Slash four Legged fan.
- 16:55Speaker 3: Club to sign up. All right, let's get to some
- 16:58Speaker 3: of the highlights.
- 16:59Speaker 1: Obviously, this was the final preseason games, so we take
- 17:01Speaker 1: it to see the starters for a good chunk of time.
- 17:03Speaker 1: And obviously we talked about that first drive, but I,
- 17:06Speaker 1: for me, I was most impressed with Trevor using different targets.
- 17:09Speaker 2: Right.
- 17:09Speaker 1: We talk about Calvin Ridley all the time. Obviously he
- 17:11Speaker 1: was involved in this thing, but he's using the tight ends. John,
- 17:15Speaker 1: you were talking about the running game really coming through,
- 17:17Speaker 1: and I think when you have all these weapons at
- 17:20Speaker 1: your disposal up more than just the wide receivers, which
- 17:22Speaker 1: we talk about a lot, that makes your offense a
- 17:24Speaker 1: little bit more dynamic.
- 17:26Speaker 4: Yeah, you better get this team in some bad down
- 17:30Speaker 4: and distances, because it's a team right now that with
- 17:34Speaker 4: all these weapons, if they're in first and ten second, six,
- 17:36Speaker 4: which is obviously what you want to do, if they're
- 17:39Speaker 4: on schedule, they're gonna be really dangerous. And again there's
- 17:43Speaker 4: Tank's fun. Well, I don't expect that to be a
- 17:45Speaker 4: long term issue. Actually got an email Brian, somebody saying
- 17:48Speaker 4: why did they run tank outside. When he's a power
- 17:51Speaker 4: runner who runs up the middle, Well, you know you're
- 17:55Speaker 4: not just gonna run Tank over the middle with like
- 17:57Speaker 4: like straight handoffs. Teams will figure that out. Look, they're
- 18:00Speaker 4: going to be dynamic. I think what's really scary about
- 18:03Speaker 4: this offense is when Bigsby's in the game or Etn's
- 18:07Speaker 4: in the game. Etn doesn't mean pass around here, right.
- 18:10Speaker 4: Etn runs hard for his size, and he ran with.
- 18:12Speaker 2: The shoulders square to the last scrimmage. Hey, how about this.
- 18:16Speaker 5: When we talked to the coaches about Luke Ferrell, they
- 18:18Speaker 5: talked about how he was potentially a better blocking tight
- 18:21Speaker 5: than Chris Mannherts, who was here the last two years.
- 18:23Speaker 5: But you saw him on that first drive catch two
- 18:25Speaker 5: balls for first downs. When Luke Ferrell is involved in
- 18:27Speaker 5: the passing game, that tells you how deep you are.
- 18:29Speaker 1: Doug's gonna have a lot of fun with that tight
- 18:31Speaker 1: down room for sure. And then Tank Bigsby, he's a rookie.
- 18:34Speaker 1: That's a learning mistake. I think we have all all
- 18:36Speaker 1: the confidence in the world.
- 18:36Speaker 3: Who's going to learn from that one? On this one?
- 18:38Speaker 2: Learn to hold onto the ball, Yes.
- 18:40Speaker 3: It might do old school, have to carry the.
- 18:41Speaker 2: Guy goes guy.
- 18:42Speaker 5: Bucky Brooks said it the other night, guys are coming
- 18:44Speaker 5: hard after the ball, and they might not do that
- 18:47Speaker 5: in college football.
- 18:47Speaker 3: They might not he or it might not be used
- 18:49Speaker 3: to it.
- 18:50Speaker 1: One of the other things I think, obviously, the maybe
- 18:52Speaker 1: highlight of the night was Calvin's catch, and that's just
- 18:54Speaker 1: a tiny little flash what we're going to be able
- 18:57Speaker 1: to see from him, that tow dragon catch that at
- 18:59Speaker 1: first look maybe not in bounds, and then you take
- 19:01Speaker 1: them there.
- 19:02Speaker 4: That's a special player doing something that most human beings
- 19:04Speaker 4: can't do.
- 19:05Speaker 5: The line judge was right there and he waved his
- 19:09Speaker 5: hands immediately. You can see him right here watching no
- 19:11Speaker 5: no catch.
- 19:12Speaker 4: It's wild on the replay Alvin immediately. I mean, it's impressive.
- 19:17Speaker 4: The guys know he knew what he had done, he
- 19:21Speaker 4: felt it. It's impressive. He's gonna even beyond that.
- 19:27Speaker 2: Though.
- 19:27Speaker 4: The first play of the game showed what Ridley's going
- 19:29Speaker 4: to be for this offense. Easy, easy twelve yard completion
- 19:35Speaker 4: because the team, the opponent, knew what he could do
- 19:39Speaker 4: if they played press on him. He changes a lot
- 19:43Speaker 4: for this offense.
- 19:45Speaker 1: I do want to mention the defense a little bit
- 19:48Speaker 1: because we saw the starters on defense, and obviously Tyreek
- 19:51Speaker 1: Hill did Tyreek kill things on the very first play
- 19:53Speaker 1: and you're like, oh no, this is gonna be a
- 19:54Speaker 1: long day, or at least a long first quarter. And
- 19:57Speaker 1: they had a nice little come together moment at the
- 19:59Speaker 1: goal line. I won't call it a full goal line stand,
- 20:01Speaker 1: but they they kind of they got their job done there,
- 20:04Speaker 1: and I Ray Robertson Harris had that tackle at one point.
- 20:07Speaker 1: I think that's the next play after this where he
- 20:10Speaker 1: kind of just comes in and it's close to closeeslining
- 20:13Speaker 1: anybody and pulls them back around.
- 20:15Speaker 3: As just a large man that he is.
- 20:16Speaker 5: He's got such a large frame and he is so
- 20:19Speaker 5: good inside. And most people missed the every day, every
- 20:23Speaker 5: play things that he does because it's overshadowed by what's
- 20:26Speaker 5: going on around him.
- 20:27Speaker 2: But he is a really good player.
- 20:28Speaker 3: He's a huge anchor in that line.
- 20:30Speaker 4: Like I said last week, if these teams play sixty minutes,
- 20:33Speaker 4: the Dolphins are gonna make plays. There's no defense in
- 20:36Speaker 4: the NFL. It's gonna consistently keep Tyreek Hill from having
- 20:40Speaker 4: a play or two. I thought it was impressive what
- 20:42Speaker 4: the Jaguars did. They made sure that the big plays
- 20:48Speaker 4: didn't turn into touchdowns. I think that's what this defense
- 20:50Speaker 4: is gonna need to be there. You have touchdowns, the're
- 20:52Speaker 4: gonna they're gonna give up big plays, but in big moments,
- 20:55Speaker 4: which for preseason this was a big moment and they
- 20:59Speaker 4: got to stop held them to a field goal. I
- 21:01Speaker 4: think that's what this defense at the end of the year,
- 21:05Speaker 4: if they do those kind of things, the offense is
- 21:08Speaker 4: going to be so explosive that that's going to be
- 21:10Speaker 4: enough from this defense.
- 21:11Speaker 5: You know, people generally deride a defense that is described
- 21:14Speaker 5: as bend but don't break, But that's what that is, right,
- 21:16Speaker 5: I mean, that is just it's waiting, being patient, making
- 21:20Speaker 5: them make mistakes and not giving up touchdowns and giving
- 21:23Speaker 5: up field goals perhaps instead. But that's Ben but don't
- 21:26Speaker 5: break it at worked for the Jaguars there, and with
- 21:27Speaker 5: an offense like the one that he is here in
- 21:30Speaker 5: twenty twenty three, you can deal with that, you can
- 21:32Speaker 5: win with that.
- 21:33Speaker 1: And they're also you know, taking advantage of opportunities in
- 21:35Speaker 1: terms of turnovers, and we saw two of the young
- 21:37Speaker 1: guys get interceptions in this game. And yes, you're Abdullah
- 21:41Speaker 1: and Hallett, who's been struggling with that injury a little
- 21:44Speaker 1: bit in camp, I think, but flash there another tow
- 21:47Speaker 1: dragger on the sideline, as Bucky I think said, because
- 21:52Speaker 1: that's what you need as well. Right, yeah, Ben, don't
- 21:54Speaker 1: break and then maybe get us an extra possession here
- 21:56Speaker 1: and there, and then more than likely not Trevor's Trevor
- 21:59Speaker 1: Lawrence is going to get you points out of it.
- 22:01Speaker 1: So when you see some stuff like that, and even Abdullah,
- 22:03Speaker 1: who's probably not going to have I wouldn't think of
- 22:06Speaker 1: as an interception person, but when you throw the ball
- 22:09Speaker 1: right to him, he's going to get a pick. But
- 22:12Speaker 1: this one was athletic right in front of the sideline.
- 22:14Speaker 1: I think just any time you can create turnovers, obviously
- 22:17Speaker 1: that's beneficial to your team.
- 22:18Speaker 4: Well that's what his defense was last year. And you
- 22:21Speaker 4: talk about Ben, but don't break. They were opportunistic and
- 22:26Speaker 4: you sense that this is going to be a team.
- 22:29Speaker 4: If they play seventeen games, they usually will be able
- 22:33Speaker 4: to get a lead with this offense. You hate to
- 22:36Speaker 4: assume things, but the percentage chances look like this is
- 22:39Speaker 4: going to be a team that can get leads. Once
- 22:41Speaker 4: you're a team that gets leads, and you get a
- 22:43Speaker 4: couple of picks and you end the game quickly. That's
- 22:46Speaker 4: their formula for being really good if they can play
- 22:48Speaker 4: to it.
- 22:49Speaker 5: By the way, because they were sort of ben but
- 22:51Speaker 5: don't break last year and we saw that in this
- 22:53Speaker 5: game last Saturday Night. Doesn't mean that with the talent
- 22:56Speaker 5: that they have, they can't flip the script and be
- 22:59Speaker 5: one of those attacking and go make your own play defenses.
- 23:01Speaker 1: Right.
- 23:01Speaker 5: I mean, if Josh Allen and Trayvon Walker create the pressure,
- 23:05Speaker 5: if you get Devon Hamilton back and Foley and they
- 23:07Speaker 5: can control the line of scrimmage. If Tyson Campbell has
- 23:10Speaker 5: the kind of season in the safeties too, right, have
- 23:12Speaker 5: the kind of seasons that they're capable of. I mean,
- 23:14Speaker 5: they can play the other style too, But if the
- 23:17Speaker 5: bend but don't break is their backup, it works pretty good.
- 23:20Speaker 4: It's amazing how many picks and sacks you start getting
- 23:23Speaker 4: when you're ahead ten to nothing early in the second quarter. Absolutely,
- 23:26Speaker 4: and teams feel pressured to throw and they don't want
- 23:28Speaker 4: to throw.
- 23:28Speaker 5: Seven interceptions and I forget eight or nine sacks in
- 23:31Speaker 5: the preseason, so pretty productive.
- 23:34Speaker 1: Let's hope we see that positive change for the defense.
- 23:36Speaker 1: If not, we also we talked about that wide receiver,
- 23:39Speaker 1: that last wide receiver spot, and there was about maybe
- 23:41Speaker 1: four names. I think after Saturday is probably three names,
- 23:45Speaker 1: Tim Jones, Seth Williams, and Elijah Cooks because they all
- 23:50Speaker 1: made plays in this game. And I know it's going
- 23:51Speaker 1: to come down to special teams, but as any of
- 23:54Speaker 1: either of your's decisions changed or.
- 23:56Speaker 4: Well, I'll say that because that's something I think we're
- 23:58Speaker 4: talking about later.
- 23:59Speaker 5: On, and I'll say I think Tim Jones probably solidified it,
- 24:04Speaker 5: and he was the best of the special teamers. But
- 24:07Speaker 5: I think some of the catches that he made, the
- 24:08Speaker 5: way he played the last two preseason games, I don't
- 24:11Speaker 5: see that there's any way you take him out of
- 24:13Speaker 5: the equation.
- 24:13Speaker 2: And they like him a.
- 24:14Speaker 1: Lot, and I think there's some factor of knowing a
- 24:17Speaker 1: system that they appreciate, especially at seeing how everyone else
- 24:20Speaker 1: has really excelled in the second year with Doug Peterson.
- 24:22Speaker 1: He has been here, so he knows things.
- 24:25Speaker 3: That does it.
- 24:25Speaker 1: For our highlights from Saturday's game, coming up, we're going
- 24:27Speaker 1: to talk about these roster cuts coming on Tuesday, who
- 24:30Speaker 1: we think will make it, who might be the first
- 24:32Speaker 1: guy out of More on that coming up after.
- 24:34Speaker 3: The break moved, the freight moved the freight.
- 24:40Speaker 1: Magellan Transport was voted the coolest office space in Jacksonville.
- 24:43Speaker 1: You can apply online at www dot Magellanlogistics dot com.
- 24:47Speaker 1: Welcome back to our Monday edition of Jagdam. We are
- 24:50Speaker 1: one day before cut day and we're going to do
- 24:52Speaker 1: our final edition of the fifty three. But we're going
- 24:54Speaker 1: to do a little bit in an addition to that,
- 24:57Speaker 1: in the sense of who's had a great training camp,
- 25:01Speaker 1: great preseason, really solidified themselves as being one of the
- 25:04Speaker 1: fifty three final roster, and then who is someone that
- 25:07Speaker 1: is going to be on the outside looking in at
- 25:09Speaker 1: the end of the day on Tuesday.
- 25:10Speaker 5: All right, So my fifty third is Garrett Prince, and
- 25:13Speaker 5: not because he had a tremendous impact on the field
- 25:17Speaker 5: in preseason games, but because I know they like him
- 25:19Speaker 5: a lot and they might not have used him in
- 25:23Speaker 5: the way that they intend to use him. A talented
- 25:25Speaker 5: guy had a great offseason, and so I think he
- 25:28Speaker 5: makes this team. And the guy that I think is
- 25:30Speaker 5: just off is Christian braswell. I think they wanted to
- 25:33Speaker 5: give him an opportunity and they did to really compete
- 25:36Speaker 5: to be the backup Nickel cornerback. But in the Dallas game,
- 25:40Speaker 5: he had back to back penalties for illegal contact. One
- 25:43Speaker 5: that was a critical play in the sense that it
- 25:45Speaker 5: would have been in the regular season, where it was
- 25:47Speaker 5: a first down off of a third down. Right, he
- 25:50Speaker 5: did the same thing the other night, So that's a
- 25:53Speaker 5: technique issue for a young player who's having to learn
- 25:55Speaker 5: how to play in the National Football League. So I
- 25:58Speaker 5: think he's a practice squad guy for sure, because they
- 26:00Speaker 5: like him and he's a guy that they have a
- 26:02Speaker 5: plan for. So I say, Prince makes it has fifty three,
- 26:05Speaker 5: and Brashwell's that first guy that they can bring back
- 26:08Speaker 5: up at some point when he's ready.
- 26:09Speaker 4: Yeah, you could be right.
- 26:11Speaker 3: I think they like him a lot.
- 26:12Speaker 4: I think they may be scared to let Braswell out
- 26:16Speaker 4: there because they really like his skill set and they
- 26:21Speaker 4: know teams, So I get it.
- 26:23Speaker 2: I mean, it's it again.
- 26:26Speaker 4: You could be right. There's something about Braswell that makes
- 26:30Speaker 4: me think they could be scared to do that. But's
- 26:32Speaker 4: make decision. Yeah, you made decisions, So let's flash mine
- 26:36Speaker 4: up because I'm drawing a blank on what I chose to. Yeah, well, yeah,
- 26:41Speaker 4: I went with Caleb Johnson because of something that to
- 26:44Speaker 4: make it because he's farwell special teams coach. Last week,
- 26:49Speaker 4: I referred to him as a four core player, So
- 26:51Speaker 4: I'd be a little surprised if he's not on the team.
- 26:53Speaker 4: And he's one of those guys that when you're doing
- 26:57Speaker 4: a fifty three media and fans sometimes overlook because they
- 27:03Speaker 4: don't quite see, Okay, this is a guy who can
- 27:06Speaker 4: play special teams and they trust him at linebacker if
- 27:09Speaker 4: there are injuries. So I don't know this one for sure.
- 27:13Speaker 4: That's what it feels like. I think Tim Jones to
- 27:16Speaker 4: your point earlier, I originally had Tim Jones in this
- 27:19Speaker 4: spot just to make the case that boy, I don't
- 27:22Speaker 4: quite know what they're doing at receiver.
- 27:24Speaker 2: But I'd be surprised at this.
- 27:26Speaker 4: Point if it's not Tim Jones based on the trust
- 27:28Speaker 4: they had in him last year and the fact that
- 27:30Speaker 4: they have seen him over the course of time.
- 27:32Speaker 2: Trust is so much with.
- 27:34Speaker 4: Coaches in terms of when they're making those decisions.
- 27:35Speaker 5: Jones is a four core special teams player. Wingered is
- 27:38Speaker 5: a four core special teams player.
- 27:40Speaker 4: Those guys you don't let go, especially when they've done
- 27:43Speaker 4: things that you like as reserves, so they'll try, they'll
- 27:48Speaker 4: try like hell to get those big receivers onto the
- 27:50Speaker 4: practice squad. Yeah, the question is whether you can get
- 27:52Speaker 4: a back or not. But those guys cook Are Jones
- 27:56Speaker 4: in particular is a tremendous special teamer. And then Nathan Rourke,
- 28:01Speaker 4: my gut says he's not on the fifty three, but
- 28:06Speaker 4: does someone grab him?
- 28:10Speaker 3: Did he flash enough?
- 28:11Speaker 1: Or is this someone that's going to be on the
- 28:12Speaker 1: practice squad.
- 28:13Speaker 4: There is a tendency, and we've talked about it. You
- 28:17Speaker 4: see your own players, mean, the guys that we all
- 28:20Speaker 4: watch and think, wow, does the rest of the league
- 28:25Speaker 4: see Nathan Roorke and say I've got to have that
- 28:29Speaker 4: at the expense of something else that I've been working with.
- 28:32Speaker 4: Is he that much better than the guys that are
- 28:35Speaker 4: on other rosters. It's a risk, and at the same time,
- 28:41Speaker 4: if Trevor ain't playing, it doesn't matter yet.
- 28:43Speaker 1: So.
- 28:45Speaker 4: I think he gets released and maybe picked up by
- 28:48Speaker 4: somebody else. There's great storylines. I wish I had a
- 28:53Speaker 4: better answer. I just don't know with Nathan lell.
- 28:55Speaker 5: And I don't know what the backup situation is like
- 28:58Speaker 5: on the other thirty one teams. Has someone hurt this
- 29:00Speaker 5: preseason and someone desperate for a guy with an arm
- 29:04Speaker 5: like this guy has and the moxie that he has
- 29:06Speaker 5: in the pocket because he's a tough kid, and they
- 29:08Speaker 5: say that's better than any other guy. I could get it.
- 29:11Speaker 5: Even though he might not be ready to be a two.
- 29:13Speaker 5: I'm better with him than someone else. I can't say that.
- 29:15Speaker 5: I don't know all the other situations, but that could happen,
- 29:18Speaker 5: and it.
- 29:18Speaker 1: Could be a later in the year thing, because as
- 29:19Speaker 1: we know, if quarterback go down and injuries come up.
- 29:22Speaker 5: He'll be on someone's roster, if not as a two,
- 29:25Speaker 5: as that third.
- 29:26Speaker 1: For my fifty three, I went running backs because we've
- 29:29Speaker 1: seen Dearness Johnson really solidify himself. I know, john you
- 29:32Speaker 1: just mentioned he probably up to three out of the
- 29:34Speaker 1: of the four that they're going to keep, including Jamichael
- 29:36Speaker 1: Hasty and Stuve Connors unfortunately worked his way out here.
- 29:40Speaker 1: But you have to be happy with the running back
- 29:42Speaker 1: room that you do have because as you mentioned, those
- 29:44Speaker 1: first two backs are really lighting it up. And then
- 29:46Speaker 1: to think Dearnest is your third. He scored in Saturday's
- 29:50Speaker 1: game as well. It's it's getting the embarrassment of riches
- 29:54Speaker 1: on offense all around.
- 29:55Speaker 4: Oh, Brian. They've had great running back rooms around here,
- 29:57Speaker 4: so I'm not gonna say he's the best one, because
- 29:59Speaker 4: when you've had one that inc it's MJD and Fred.
- 30:01Speaker 2: From one to three or potentially four, it's great. Yeah,
- 30:05Speaker 2: it's well.
- 30:06Speaker 4: And again there was whenever you have MJD and Fred
- 30:10Speaker 4: in the same backfield.
- 30:11Speaker 5: Well, in ninety eight they had two first round picks,
- 30:13Speaker 5: Fred Taylor or James Stewart and the third round pick
- 30:15Speaker 5: in Tavian Banks, who was electric before you get it.
- 30:17Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah, that could have been the best. But this
- 30:22Speaker 4: is when you're putting a group in those conversations around
- 30:27Speaker 4: here because it's been a running back team, it's been
- 30:29Speaker 4: a quarterback team historically. Uh. I usually don't get excited
- 30:33Speaker 4: about watching running backs, but I'm excited to watch these guys.
- 30:36Speaker 4: I think Tank and Travis etn uh are going to
- 30:40Speaker 4: do special things. Maybe maybe you have a nickname at
- 30:44Speaker 4: some point, kuy Oh.
- 30:46Speaker 3: We love a nickname.

- 31:05Speaker 1: for fans. Jagxam presented by Carshield today are only jags
- 31:09Speaker 1: am of this week because we are not going to
- 31:12Speaker 1: have a show on Wednesday or Thursday.
- 31:13Speaker 3: We will be back on Monday.
- 31:15Speaker 1: Oh no, you're gonna be happy to be away from us.
- 31:18Speaker 3: You've seen this every day for like a month. He's
- 31:22Speaker 3: lying to you.
- 31:24Speaker 1: And then we'll be back on Monday and regular season schedules,
- 31:26Speaker 1: So we go Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, let's do it. I
- 31:29Speaker 1: just want to detail the schedule for some people that
- 31:31Speaker 1: cuts are at four thirty. They have to be in
- 31:34Speaker 1: by four thirty on Tuesday. And then, Brian, can you
- 31:37Speaker 1: explain kind of the waiver wire.
- 31:38Speaker 5: Well, it's different this year because it's it's one cut,
- 31:40Speaker 5: not too so that the market's going to be flooded
- 31:43Speaker 5: with you know, eleven hundred players who are going to
- 31:45Speaker 5: be available, So teams can't start claiming players until four
- 31:50Speaker 5: thirty on Wednesday. Right, it's not instant like it has
- 31:53Speaker 5: been in the past. You have there's a twenty four
- 31:56Speaker 5: hour period there for them to be able to figure
- 31:57Speaker 5: things out. So they've kind of slow paid it, Oh,
- 32:00Speaker 5: played it this way so the teams can make it work.
- 32:04Speaker 5: And then I think they have until four point thirty
- 32:07Speaker 5: on Thursday, I think practice squad right, so it's a
- 32:11Speaker 5: little bit different because all the teams are cutting everybody
- 32:14Speaker 5: at the same time.
- 32:15Speaker 1: And then we'll hear from Doug and Trent on Wednesday.
- 32:18Speaker 1: As of now, per Hurricane, we'll see when we actually
- 32:21Speaker 1: end up talking to them. But any surprises we're gonna see, Johnny,
- 32:25Speaker 1: you think it'll be pretty straightforward.
- 32:27Speaker 4: You know, I'm terrible a surprises because you don't enjoy them. Well,
- 32:31Speaker 4: I'm fine with them as long as they benefit me,
- 32:33Speaker 4: but I don't ever really know what people are expecting,
- 32:40Speaker 4: and then we get so close to the roster that
- 32:41Speaker 4: it's not surprising anymore. I don't think there'll be any
- 32:44Speaker 4: big names, you know, any David Garrard getting released at
- 32:49Speaker 4: Lunched kind of plays memory there, So I don't think
- 32:54Speaker 4: there'll be any shockers like that.
- 32:57Speaker 2: I do expect there.
- 32:57Speaker 4: Will be those of us and those of the fans
- 33:00Speaker 4: who have who have dug deep and sort of locked
- 33:02Speaker 4: in on some guys. I think there'll be some uh
- 33:06Speaker 4: you know, uh in the old days, but I would
- 33:08Speaker 4: call page three stories.
- 33:09Speaker 1: No surprises, let's tell you, let's hope for no big surprises.
- 33:13Speaker 1: As for that, we'll be back with you for jags
- 33:14Speaker 1: Am on Monday. Until then, have a great week, be safe,
- 33:17Speaker 1: and we'll see soon. H
