- 0:00Today we are starting a new book and I think this book is going
- 0:04to be very different from the prior episodes and I expect that
- 0:09many of these are going to be very short because of the
- 0:12content that we'll cover. I intend to cover 1 Psalm per
- 0:17day and just talk about that. Read through the Study Bible and
- 0:20whatever comes to mind, but because the Psalms are very
- 0:24different from the other books that we've been reading, it will
- 0:29probably be shorter podcast. So first of all, I want to read
- 0:33through what the Study Bible says about the book of Psalms as
- 0:36the introduction and then we'll get into it.
- 0:39So why read this book? The Psalms in this book can help
- 0:43you give voice to your feelings. Expressing emotions can be
- 0:48frustrating, especially if you're also trying to maintain
- 0:51spiritual balance. Is it OK to sometimes be up and
- 0:55sometimes down? Is it acceptable to shout for
- 0:59joy when God gets you out of a jam?
- 1:02And what can you say when you feel abandoned by God?
- 1:06Whatever you feel, joy or sorrow, peace or anguish, you'll
- 1:11find your feelings reflected somewhere in the words of
- 1:15Psalms. Who wrote this book?
- 1:18David, Israel's most celebrated king, is connected to 73 of the
- 1:23Psalms, either as a writer or a recipient.
- 1:28Asaph, the sons of Korra, Solomon, Heman, Ethan Moses, and
- 1:35unknown authors wrote Psalms as well.
- 1:39Why was it written? Some psalms were intended to be
- 1:42used for solid, solitary singing or meditation.
- 1:47Others were intended for group singing, including those for
- 1:50soldiers to sing while marching to battle.
- 1:54As their value for spiritual encouragement became apparent,
- 1:58the psalms were collected as guides for worship, prayer, and
- 2:02instruction about God. What to look for in Psalms The
- 2:07psalms are poetry, not doctrinal essays.
- 2:11The psalmist frequently were interested in how something felt
- 2:15more than what it meant. Think about psalms as entries in
- 2:19a diary. They reflect people's most
- 2:22intimate encounters with God. Watch for figures of speech,
- 2:26exaggerations, and repetitions. Poetic language requires that
- 2:31you read with your heart as well as your mind.
- 2:36So I. One of the first questions in
- 2:39this study Bible is how should we understand biblical poetry?
- 2:43With its highly symbolic language and frequent use of
- 2:47metaphors, biblical poetry can sometimes be difficult to
- 2:51understand. Learning a few basics, however,
- 2:54can help. One important characteristic of
- 2:56ancient Hebrew poetry is parallelism.
- 3:00Verses are lines expressing the same thought in parallel
- 3:05structure. For example, in Psalm one verse
- 3:09one we read that the blessed man doesn't walk in step with the
- 3:14wicked or stand in the way that sinners take or sit in the
- 3:20company of mockers. The idea of associating the
- 3:25godless people is expressed with different verbs but in the same
- 3:30grammatical structure. The impact of some other poetic
- 3:34devices is lost with the translation from ancient Hebrew
- 3:38into modern English. The the use of acrostics, for
- 3:42example, is discussed in Why is there a Hebrew character and
- 3:47word at the start of each section?
- 3:50And that's further on in the book we'll read that the poetry
- 3:53of Psalms focuses largely on human feelings, revealing a
- 3:58range of emotions experienced by sincere but sinful people who
- 4:05struggle to follow God and understand his place in their
- 4:09lives. For this reason, the Psalms can
- 4:12be quite varied. Some are uplifting, others
- 4:17depressing, but all are real. Why?
- 4:20Because the writers of Psalms bared their souls to God as well
- 4:24as to their readers. Though we can learn a great deal
- 4:27from biblical poetry, its primary purses purpose is not so
- 4:31much to teach us as to reach us. Something I didn't realize until
- 4:40reading more scripture is that some of these psalms, which it
- 4:46doesn't say in this summary from the study Bible, but some of
- 4:51these psalms were actually prophetic.
- 4:54And for example, here's one that comes to mind and I don't know
- 4:58what Psalm it is, but there are a couple times.
- 5:01First of all, when Jesus is on the cross and he speaks to the
- 5:06Father, it, he is it, it says, my God, my God, why have you
- 5:11forsaken me? He is actually quoting Scripture
- 5:16and it's what David said in the book of Psalms.
- 5:21And so in a sense, what David was expressing, there's another
- 5:26Psalm and I don't remember which one it is, but David like almost
- 5:31like puts himself in the place of Christ when he like, it's
- 5:37almost like, I don't know if it's David that wrote it or
- 5:40Asaph because Asaph was a seer, not a singer, but a seer, a
- 5:45prophetic person who saw things in the future.
- 5:49And he he wrote some of the Psalms also.
- 5:54And and I don't, I should have looked this up before doing this
- 5:57podcast, but I'm just saying this is in there.
- 5:59You can look at it. We will get to it eventually.
- 6:02But he he described the scene at Christ crucifixion.
- 6:08He described that his legs were not broken.
- 6:10He described that the blood and water poured out of him.
- 6:14He described how people divided up his belongings, his clothes
- 6:19beneath the cross. All of these things were
- 6:22described, you know, hundreds if not thousands of years.
- 6:26I'd have to look at the the time frame between a probably
- 6:29hundreds of years before Christ died on the cross.
- 6:33But these things were expressed through David and David like saw
- 6:37these things or Asaph, I'm not sure who said it.
- 6:40I think it was David though. But he saw these things in a
- 6:43poetic sense. But I mean, I wonder if it was
- 6:46just a vision of God that he expect expressed through a song
- 6:51or a Psalm. And but it was something that
- 6:55somehow came to him and so he expressed it that way.
- 6:59And you also have to think about when Saul, the first king of
- 7:04Israel, was when God's spirit left him, when God took away his
- 7:10spirit from Saul because he was disobedient to God, and then he
- 7:15allowed God allowed a spirit to torment him.
- 7:20But when David would come in and he would play the leer, the
- 7:23tormenting spirit would cease. So there was something about
- 7:28praise music that would get the enemy to retreat to some degree.
- 7:35So it's very interesting. There's some things that we will
- 7:38see and maybe as we read these things, there will be more to
- 7:41come through. I read through the book of
- 7:43Psalms once before and maybe like sporadically at different
- 7:48times, just opening the Bible to read something.
- 7:52But this will be interesting to go through starting, you know, I
- 7:56mean, it's been several years now, so going through very
- 8:00slowly with each of these Psalms.
- 8:02So it'll be interesting to see what we discover.
- 8:04And I don't have anything in my mindset ahead of time, but just
- 8:11I guess let's start with a prayer.
- 8:15Dear Lord, please be with us as we read through this book of
- 8:18psalms, as we start and begin every day with our reading a
- 8:22Psalm and meditating on it. What does it mean to the
- 8:27original author of the Psalm and how does it apply to our lives?
- 8:31Is there anything we can learn or take away from this?
- 8:34We ask this to be revealed by the Holy Spirit to give us an
- 8:37understanding. We ask this through Jesus
- 8:39Christ. Amen.
- 8:41OK, so Psalm one, it says, blessed is the one who does not
- 8:47walk in step with the wicked, or stand in the way that sinners
- 8:51take, or sit in the company of mockers, but whose delight is in
- 8:57the law of the Lord, and who meditates on His law day and
- 9:03night. That person is like a tree
- 9:06planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in
- 9:11season, and whose leaf does not wither.
- 9:15Whatever they do prospers. Not so the wicked.
- 9:19They are like chaff the that the wind blows away.
- 9:23Therefore the wicked will not stand in judgment, nor sinners
- 9:28in the assembly of the righteous.
- 9:31For the Lord watches over the way of the righteous.
- 9:35But the way of the wicked leads to destruction, and that ends
- 9:40Psalm 1. So I'll read what the study
- 9:42Bible has to say about these things, and I have a few little
- 9:46comments about it too. So what does it mean to be
- 9:49blessed? To be blessed is to be happy or
- 9:51full of joy. It is much more than a feeling,
- 9:54however. It is a joyous position
- 9:57resulting from a right relationship with God.
- 10:01Should we meditate on God's law? When we meditate by wrapping our
- 10:06hearts and minds around God's revelation of Himself in His
- 10:11Word or the Law, we find spiritual stability, depth of
- 10:17character, and divine blessing. Does following God bring
- 10:23success? The Psalm offers a principle,
- 10:26not a guarantee of success. The ancient Hebrews did not
- 10:30limit their definition of success to the purely financial
- 10:35aspect of life. They valued other factors as
- 10:38well, including a positive reputation and community respect
- 10:43for the righteous. Success is not measured in the
- 10:46accumulation of wealth, but in the experience of God's blessing
- 10:50on their words and deeds. What is chaff?
- 10:55After wheat is harvested, the chaff are the stems, the leaves,
- 10:59the husk, and dust is separated from the grain in a process
- 11:04called winnowing. Chaff is carried away by the
- 11:08lightest wind, and its removal brings about cleansing by
- 11:13removing the unwanted seed coverings and debris from the
- 11:18grain. In this verse, the worst
- 11:21worthless chap symbolizes the wicked who will be separated
- 11:26from the righteous at judgment. And that's all of the commentary
- 11:30for this Psalm 1. So getting to maybe, what does
- 11:38this say for us? Like how can we apply it to our
- 11:41lives? Well, it's saying that the one
- 11:45who is that blessed is the one. It's kind of like who doesn't
- 11:50associate with the wicked. So who who does not walk in
- 11:54step, who's not running alongside those who are living
- 11:58wickedly or, you know, doing evil things or stand in the way
- 12:05that sinners take or sit in the company of mock in the company
- 12:10of mockers. So those who, you know, refute
- 12:14God or mock God and it says, but those but those who delight in
- 12:24the law of the Lord and who meditate on his law day and
- 12:27night, we do see this as David. David was called.
- 12:33We'll probably see it in certain parts in the Bible where it says
- 12:36David was a man after God's own heart.
- 12:40And I remember the early times of reading the Psalms and
- 12:44reading David's Psalms where he's like, I love your law and I
- 12:51meditated on it all the time. And I remember in my early days
- 12:55reading that and thinking, wow, I could never see myself saying
- 12:59that. But it's, it's interesting how
- 13:03things do change. I mean, I'm going back probably
- 13:07into, you know, 2019-2020 reading some of this actually
- 13:1520/19 was when I first read the Bible from front to back and,
- 13:20and I could not even imagine being, you know, like picture
- 13:24yourself being saying what David said.
- 13:27Could you picture yourself saying that?
- 13:29Could you picture you saying to God, I love your law and I
- 13:33meditate on it day and night. I mean, I couldn't see myself
- 13:37doing that, but yet now today I'm, you know, in the word every
- 13:41day, mostly, you know, skip a day here or there.
- 13:45But I do meditate on these things and I do like when I say
- 13:50meditate, I study these things and I, I wonder like to know God
- 13:54more and to understand the truth and and to have it guide my
- 14:01life. Like that was the decision I
- 14:03made when I decided to get baptized in 2021 was that I was
- 14:07no longer going to be a quote Christian, that I called myself
- 14:11a Christian but didn't live like what the Bible says.
- 14:14I didn't want to be a hypocrite anymore.
- 14:17And my intention was to truly live the way God tells us to
- 14:25live. And that's what my baptism
- 14:28represented to me. And it is like a death to self,
- 14:31like a death to your natural way of, you know, living.
- 14:36I mean, we all are born into sin.
- 14:38We all are sinners and, and so we have that.
- 14:42There's that time frame when not a time frame, but there is that
- 14:47mile marker when you decide, OK, I've lived this way.
- 14:51I acknowledge that I've lived against God in rebellion to God
- 14:56for so many years. Or you know, some people do this
- 14:59earlier in life. And then and then you make that
- 15:02decision. Like what has that accomplished?
- 15:05What have I accomplished by doing that?
- 15:08And you know, is this, is this all that there is?
- 15:12Is this the meaning of life? Is this what I'm supposed to be
- 15:15doing? And and then you just that time
- 15:19when you're in your life, that happens at different stages in
- 15:23somebody's life where you just start wondering things about God
- 15:27and maybe you're seeking God more.
- 15:28And this is saying that you're blessed when you start seeking
- 15:31God. Blessed are those who you know,
- 15:35if you are delighting in the law of the Lord and you're
- 15:37meditating on his law day and night, you're seeking, you're
- 15:39seeking God. And and there's a blessing that
- 15:42comes with that when you really want to know God and you really
- 15:46consider what it says, not just to read the read the Psalm and
- 15:51check it off and say, OK, I've done my duty for the day.
- 15:54Now I'm good. It's not that it's really like,
- 15:57what does this really say? What does it mean to me?
- 16:00And it says that that person who's who's reflecting on the
- 16:05word of God and meditating on it, that person is like a tree
- 16:09planted by streams of water, which yields fruit in its
- 16:13season. Now a person yielding fruit is
- 16:19symbolic of fruit of the Spirit. So when the Spirit, the Holy
- 16:24Spirit resides in us, there's Lovejoy, peace, patience,
- 16:28kindness, goodness, gentleness and self-control.
- 16:32I don't know if I perseverance, I don't know if I hit all of
- 16:34them. There's nine of them and and
- 16:38that starts to come out in a person's life and the more
- 16:41you're in God's word, the more those the fruit of the spirit.
- 16:47I mean the Jesus has the water right?
- 16:50Jesus told the woman at the well, he is the water of life or
- 16:54he gives the water that he gives, she will never be thirsty
- 16:57again. And she said to Jesus, Lord, I
- 17:00want that kind of water where I never have to be thirsty again.
- 17:03And he's like, that's the water that I give.
- 17:06And so the water, it even talks in the Book of Revelation about
- 17:10how there is this water flowing from the temple.
- 17:15And Jesus is he's the bread of life.
- 17:18He's the water of life. So like water, water sustains us
- 17:23just like bread sustains us. And that all takes us back to
- 17:28Jesus. So when we are in the word and
- 17:31when we Start learning more and more about about Jesus, about
- 17:36God, it is like streams of water, like it's filling us.
- 17:41It's just, you know, the, the water of life is coming into our
- 17:47life and it'll yield fruit. It'll yield fruit of the Spirit
- 17:51when we have the Holy Spirit, when we are willingly saying,
- 17:54OK, God, I want to live by your law.
- 17:56I'm not going to fight your law anymore.
- 17:58I'm just going to submit to it and say, OK, you are God.
- 18:03And yes, I need to listen to what you say and when.
- 18:09Listen, not just listen, but act out what you say, live how you
- 18:14say because these are all good things.
- 18:18They are there for our good. When we, the more we read, we
- 18:22understand these aren't things to hurt us.
- 18:24They are things to help us and to make us more like, like God's
- 18:30image, like how he created it, how he wanted us to be.
- 18:34So there's a transformation of our life and we become more of a
- 18:39reflection of God the more we submit to the Holy Spirit and
- 18:45live according to God's word. Now, the other thing that that
- 18:50does when we live according to God's word is it's showing God,
- 18:54I love you, I respect you, and so therefore I'm going to obey
- 18:59you. And Jesus said, if you love me,
- 19:02obey my commands. So there's, there's a lot.
- 19:06It's that relationship with God. When we start becoming obedient
- 19:09to God, that's when we start having a relationship with him,
- 19:12when we are respecting him and we are not trampling on his
- 19:16word. We are respecting his word and
- 19:19living it out. And then it just says, you know,
- 19:22like the the wicked, they're going to be blown away and
- 19:26they're not going to be in the presence in the assembly of the
- 19:29righteous and that the Lord watches over the ways of the
- 19:32righteous. So when we have that
- 19:34relationship, God is a loving father to us and he does look
- 19:40out for us. He does protect us.
- 19:42He hears us. God hears the prayers of the
- 19:44righteous. There's so many benefits to the
- 19:47relationship with God and that he can guide us on the right
- 19:51path and keep us on the right path.
- 19:53When we allow him to guide us, a lot of times we're resistant to
- 19:59him and we push him away. And he can't do that.
- 20:03He can't guide us if we push him away because he gives us free
- 20:07will. And so with if we use our free
- 20:10will to push back on him, he's not going to force himself on
- 20:14us. And he lets us have.
- 20:18In fact, sometimes he turns people over when they keep
- 20:21pushing him away over and over and over again.
- 20:23And he sees this pattern and thank God he didn't do that to
- 20:29me. Like when he saw my rebellion
- 20:31over these many years that he didn't say, OK, I'm just going
- 20:35to turn you over to that. You're, you're, you know,
- 20:38you've, you've made your decision.
- 20:41Thankfully he didn't because you know, he would have mercy.
- 20:46And and that is where gratitude comes in, when you're like,
- 20:50thank God he didn't turn me over to that because then I would be
- 20:53separated from him forever. So these are just things that
- 20:59come to mind as I read Scripture.
- 21:01And that's about all I have to say about Psalm 1.
- 21:04So we will conclude. And if you felt this was
- 21:08beneficial, please share it with someone else.
- 21:10If you're not subscribed, please subscribe.
- 21:12These are going to be shorter podcasts than they used to be, I
- 21:14think. And although I tend to talk a
- 21:17lot. So anyway, I hope you have a
- 21:21blessed day and I hope that this hits home to you.
