- 0:07Welcome to the Duckfellas Podcast, your weekly dose of waterfall wisdom,
- 0:12blind banter, and hunting stories that might just be mostly true.
- 0:18Hosted by Tyler, Cade, and I guess Pookie's here this week.
- 0:23Three fellas chasing feathers again, and maybe a good time or two.
- 0:29Do us a favor and hit that like button or subscribe wherever you're listening in at today.
- 0:40Welcome back, Pookie. We're all back. Long time no see. Gang's back together.
- 0:45Pumped. We're just glad you could make it on time this week. Likewise. Me too.
- 0:51I know you got a lot of better things to do nowadays, but...
- 0:55Nothing more important than you two. I promise.
- 0:59Okay. Let's not get carried away yet.
- 1:04Well, I didn't get to go hunting this weekend. or this past week.
- 1:08I don't believe Cade got to go hunting this either this past week. Nope.
- 1:14But Pookie went. Pookie, why don't you tell us a little bit about your hunting
- 1:19experiences this past weekend?
- 1:21Yeah, so the weather people were right.
- 1:24It was freezing the entire time. I hate the cold. I get cold very easily. Did not have a good time.
- 1:32Saw a lot of birds, but a little bit of,
- 1:37inexperience and lack of hunting out of an A-frame before kind of got the best,
- 1:43of us, but a learning experience nonetheless and still got to see a lot of birds.
- 1:50That's the only way you learn, right? It's going out and trying it? Oh, absolutely, yeah.
- 1:54And you guys didn't get skunked? No, we didn't get skunked. And so the streak
- 1:59still continues for the year. I'll take it.
- 2:02But no, it was good. It was nice to honestly not have either of you two there.
- 2:08Just to not completely rely on you guys for a lot of the things that I would say I normally do.
- 2:15So just to see like how
- 2:19well I could call at geese
- 2:22and and how they responded and kind of
- 2:25what they were like and I know that changes obviously from time to time
- 2:28depending on how call responsive geese are in general too but just to be able
- 2:34to call at a goose yourself and watch it turn right towards you was kind of
- 2:39cool all I got out of that was that he does not need to hunt or want to hunt
- 2:44with me or you anymore, kid. Perfect. False.
- 2:48Don't leave me. Did you learn the most important lesson of an A-frame?
- 2:53Don't use an A-frame ever? No, dude. The whole point of using an A-frame when
- 2:57it's cold out is so you can run a heater.
- 2:59Oh, yeah, no. We definitely did run a heater, but when it's like negative 12 outside...
- 3:05Doesn't really help y'all that much. That is fair.
- 3:09More heaters. I would, I'd argue that though. I bet you it did help.
- 3:12Just didn't feel like it did. I challenge you to go out and redo that same hunt in a layout blind.
- 3:18Yeah, no. Without your heater bodysuit. There it is. That's exactly why we didn't use layouts actually.
- 3:24It's just due to how cold it was and the ability to use heaters and layouts or in a frame. Sorry.
- 3:32I'm glad it wasn't that cold here. mm-hmm it was yeah i mean it was cold cold
- 3:39the snow and the wind i mean we had about the perfect,
- 3:46amount of wind for goose hunting really just a perfect setup other than the
- 3:51the it being so cold like snow's coming down we have enough wind that they can't or they shouldn't,
- 3:59really try to fly around you.
- 4:02I don't know. We learned a lot. It was still fun. I was in a lot better spirits
- 4:06after I got warmed back up.
- 4:08You seemed kind of crabby when I was asking you how your hunt went.
- 4:12Whatever, though. That will happen. It happens. It does. I get it. I get it.
- 4:17I mean, not with you. I feel like this is a perfect time to roll us right into
- 4:25what we're talking about today. We talk about...
- 4:29Well, hold up. Oh boy. We're not there yet. Oh.
- 4:33I don't know. Kate didn't get to tell us about his extravagant weekend just partying all weekend.
- 4:40We didn't do all that much partying. We ate some damn good food.
- 4:43We went out to Indianapolis for the PRI show.
- 4:46It's a big race, like vendor show. Go buy a bunch of shit. Got a new seat.
- 4:51Yeah. Finally got to eat at St. Elmo, like the top rated steakhouse in the state.
- 4:58I think I'm still recovering from that coma I was in.
- 5:01But yeah, it was a fun weekend. Didn't have to deal with either of you two dipshits. It was kind of nice.
- 5:06Oh, oh, you know what? I could say the same. It's been freaking nice at work.
- 5:12Just think, you cut me off just to hear all that.
- 5:17Yeah, but somebody's got to do it. Might as well be me.
- 5:21Go ahead, Austin. Since you were in such a big hurry here, let's just go ahead.
- 5:25No, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait. We didn't get to hear what Tyler did on his
- 5:27extravagant weekend. I worked.
- 5:30I got double time and I got time and a half and I worked.
- 5:35That works. It was fun. It was warm in the crane, though. Are you two done now?
- 5:42I think so, yeah. I think you can go ahead and carry us into the topic here if you want.
- 5:46All right, perfect. So before I got rudely interrupted twice,
- 5:49I was just going to... Wait, wait. No, that's enough.
- 5:53You're about to get muted. You're done. You're done.
- 5:58Before I got interrupted twice, I was about to roll us right into this week's episode.
- 6:03Guides and freelance hunting, and what better to describe that than our own
- 6:08local guide, Papa Deitch.
- 6:11First off, don't be saying that out loud. I'm not a guide. To the state of Iowa, I am not a guide.
- 6:18I do not take people hunting for money. I just take them on make-a-wish hunts.
- 6:23Nah, more sexual favors.
- 6:26That is also prostitution. I do not do that either.
- 6:32This is going sideways right away yeah no definitely
- 6:36not good here so am i i mean
- 6:39i've been doing this for a long time i have
- 6:42never used a guide to go hunting so
- 6:45and i don't believe any of us have ever used a
- 6:48guide no so negative our experience
- 6:51and i don't know the things we
- 6:54say about guides are with little to no experience using a guide or going on
- 7:00a guided hunt we'll just take that with a grain of salt but we've all i mean
- 7:05i know people personally that have gone on guided hunts that i know a lot of
- 7:09people that have had good experiences and also had,
- 7:12horrendous experiences going with guides but i mean that's really just business
- 7:17in general i mean it's what it is.
- 7:21So I know we haven't used guides ever, but to your guys' knowledge, what are the,
- 7:28reputable guides that you guys have heard of, or if you can think of any that
- 7:32you would go on a hunt with, who would be some that you guys would go with on a hunt?
- 7:38I'll take the low hanging fruit. You obviously got to take habitat flats.
- 7:41I mean, that Tony does a great job with what he does there.
- 7:45And he does a great job with their social media too, getting his,
- 7:48his name out there and kind of showing some of the behind-the-scenes shit that they do.
- 7:52So, yeah, that's a pretty easy one for me to go with anyway.
- 7:55We now know who has the money in the group.
- 7:58I'm not saying that I would ever even go with a guide, but I feel like if you're
- 8:05going to do it, you might as well do it right. The hard crack.
- 8:09Austin, have you ever heard of any guides? I mean, I know you don't have as
- 8:12much experience in it, but have you heard of any that you would go on a hunt with?
- 8:15Have you had a dream hunt, like a make-a-wish hunt like I do every week with you?
- 8:18But you had to pay for it yeah i mean yeah
- 8:21that's that's my life in
- 8:24general is guided hunts every week with you too so it's
- 8:28it's beautiful i mean yeah we have good weeks and we have bad weeks just uh
- 8:34like you said a lot of bad weeks not so many bad weeks with kate actually though
- 8:39it's kind of weird how that works out i don't know so anyways we'll just carry
- 8:44on this podcast the First time without Austin.
- 8:48He's booted from the room. That's crazy.
- 8:51You guys don't even, you don't get me, but for 20 minutes last week,
- 8:55and you're already just being mean to me again. No, for sure.
- 8:59But for myself, for myself, I would choose Cadillac Creek.
- 9:04Why? Because I honestly think they are the best.
- 9:08And you're not huddled. You're not relying on a crop season for.
- 9:15Habitat Flats, the Grand, I believe the, not the Grand. There's another big one in Kansas.
- 9:20The Grand is one of Tony's, but I can't remember the name of it.
- 9:24But, I mean, they're flooded crops. So you're relying on solely Mother Nature
- 9:27and how the crop comes up.
- 9:30Cadillac Creek hunts ponds and fields in, I believe it's Oklahoma.
- 9:36And they have some epic lesser hunts and ducks and cranes and snows.
- 9:42I mean, you name it, they kill them.
- 9:44Fair enough reason were you trying to say something Austin nope never not me I just sit here and smile,
- 9:54I actually didn't mean to interrupt you but once it got going I was like fuck
- 9:59it full send I get it we already told you that you were doing most of the talking
- 10:03for this anyways so no I'm not please carry on,
- 10:08okay I'm gonna carry on with asking you guys a question so why do you guys think
- 10:13so many people use guides rather than just do it themselves.
- 10:17Go ahead, Pookie. What you got? Convenience. Like sheer convenience.
- 10:22The guides will put you on the birds so you don't have to scout.
- 10:27Really, the only downfall that I personally see from guides right now,
- 10:32I mean, I would say at this point in my hunting career, is strictly the cost.
- 10:36Like other than that, the guides do the majority of the legwork for you,
- 10:41but you still get that satisfaction of killing birds.
- 10:46But I think and if to offset the cost
- 10:49of the guide though I mean it's probably way more expensive just to
- 10:52buy your own shit and do it isn't it that was exactly what I was
- 10:55gonna say like it the cost of going on
- 10:58one guided hunt per year that's like
- 11:01your one duck hunt you do if you bought all that shit
- 11:04and had to maintain it every year you'd spend way more
- 11:07money right yeah no I don't
- 11:10disagree with that the I guess
- 11:13something to argue back at that with
- 11:16is that like your example with habitat
- 11:19flats if you're spending that kind of money to go down there for
- 11:22three days and we all hunt a lot more than three days too so I mean the costs
- 11:29I would actually like to do the math at some point too with the average amount
- 11:34of days that we end up hunting in a hunting season and and kind of do that math
- 11:39out and see where it would line up really.
- 11:42I've done my own and I know I hunt
- 11:45usually around 50 total days between duck
- 11:48and goose for like regular duck and regular goose season I hunt around 50 days
- 11:52and to add to your guys thing I also know how much a 3 day hunt for habitat
- 11:58flats cost and that's $62.50 for meals and lodging for just 3 days to kill 18 ducks.
- 12:07So, I mean, that's expensive.
- 12:11I mean, granted, you guys are, or not you guys, but anybody that goes there
- 12:17is more or less guaranteed to kill 18 ducks, whether it's mallards or teal or
- 12:22whatever the hell they have around.
- 12:24So that's still a lot of money to spend to go down there for three days and
- 12:27hear your gun go bang a few times.
- 12:30That is true. But most of the people that go down there are not starving for money.
- 12:36That's what I was going to say. That's why they blow it like it's nothing. I mean,
- 12:41for, I'd say, probably 75, if not nine, like between 75 to 90% of his people,
- 12:47his clients that go there, they're just going to get out and do it anyways like that. Yeah.
- 12:53That money they spend on those three days doesn't affect them at all compared to the general public.
- 13:00Yeah, and I feel like that's why he can charge so much because he knows that.
- 13:03And like he's built the name for himself that he can charge that much money
- 13:07and no people are going to pay it.
- 13:10I wish I knew how much Cadillac Creek charged. I don't know off the top of my
- 13:16head. I'll have to look that up here.
- 13:19But we'll keep carrying on here. Do what any of Cade.
- 13:24So would you ever consider becoming a guide? Personally, no.
- 13:29Why not? Main reason being, obviously it always sounds good.
- 13:35Like, yeah, we get to work on duck hunting shit year-round.
- 13:38But the fucking grind of that, in the season
- 13:41would be brutal like it's
- 13:44bad enough when we go somewhere and hunt for four or
- 13:47five days you're wiped out by the time you get home but then when you're doing
- 13:50it for a living you gotta do that every single day yeah it's definitely all
- 13:56in type thing i'm sure you get used to it like anything but that first like
- 14:02that first two years would be absolute hell.
- 14:06It's, it can't be much different than the, what we do now.
- 14:09I mean, to a point, granted, you didn't get to go with us this year on a hunting
- 14:12trip because you skanked out on us at the last minute, but me and Austin went
- 14:18on a trip and we were there.
- 14:20How long were we going, Austin? Eight days? Eight days. Yeah.
- 14:24And that's a grind. I mean, it's, you don't, for us, we were in the truck more
- 14:29than we were hunting. Yeah.
- 14:31Yeah, that is a cool thing. Like if you get in with like say a habitat flats
- 14:35that has all the ground, you're basically just doing the maintenance on it and then you flood it.
- 14:40And then you like, there's not a whole lot of scout work that goes into that.
- 14:43Not like doing it freelance wise.
- 14:46Right. So I did just see, I just looked up Cadillac Creek's cost.
- 14:52So for like a three day hunt, basically the same thing Tony offers.
- 14:55It comes with lodging, bar included, all the goodies.
- 15:01It's $37.50 for three days for that.
- 15:05So damn near half the price. Yeah, but like I said, they don't flood crops.
- 15:12They're actually out of Amarillo, Texas.
- 15:14So they're just hunting fields and ponds. There ain't much water down there to speak of. Yeah.
- 15:24Pookie if you ever If you ever got your calling Situation improved on Which
- 15:30you're getting better at Would you ever become a guide Or want to become a guide,
- 15:35No I don't think so either I,
- 15:39Just these past couple seasons Like I enjoy the grind That the season and the
- 15:45prep Work like before the season take But then we get that off time Like right
- 15:50after the season and where which you might not get that if you're a guide or not.
- 15:56After season's done, I'm like, oh, I definitely need to take a couple weeks and not do anything.
- 16:04Yeah, I definitely look forward to that last goose hunt of the year when I can
- 16:10put everything in the trailer and I can forget about it for usually two to three
- 16:15months and then open the trailer back up around April and say,
- 16:19oh, we got a fucking mess here.
- 16:22Yeah, you do that on normal weekends, not just the last one.
- 16:26False. Damn. False. He's got a bunch of lazy people that hunt with me. That would be me.
- 16:36Oh, so I mean, this is going to be a tough question for any of us to ask,
- 16:42but what factors go into choosing a guide?
- 16:46I mean, if you were to, if you were to sit here and say, I want to go on a guided
- 16:50hunt next year, what would you be looking at before you book that hunt?
- 16:56I feel like the first thing anybody's going to look at is your chance to shoot your limit.
- 17:02I mean, that's kind of what you're going there for. Exactly.
- 17:06So that's like, uh, I actually was just looking it up before we hopped on here,
- 17:10but that's like an actual number, like so many birds per person throughout the season.
- 17:15They, they, I think like they're supposed to keep track of that. So.
- 17:19I think they report that to the state that they're licensed in. Yep.
- 17:24So yeah, that's definitely like the first thing you asked. And then after that,
- 17:28I feel like you could ask for some references or some like shortly previous clients.
- 17:36Cost. Cost. Yeah, I guess not all of us have Cade's money, so cost would be
- 17:40a big part for me or you. Max.
- 17:42The thing is, like I said, if you're going to do a guided hunt,
- 17:45you're going to pay whatever it costs. You don't really give a shit.
- 17:48Well, no. I mean, that's the thing. Like, if it just costs that much money, I just won't do it.
- 17:54It's not that I wouldn't do it, actually. It's just, like, the backlash I would get.
- 18:01So you're saying Mama might get mad? Yeah, she probably would.
- 18:04I mean, love her to death. Like she lets us do whatever we want around here and go. She does.
- 18:12She does give you pretty free reign. Yeah. Yeah.
- 18:15No, she, I mean, she's great with that, but I talk about throwing over six grand at a three day hunt.
- 18:22Yeah. She might draw the line there. And he just knows that he would get absolutely
- 18:27fucking roasted by the rest of his podcast.
- 18:33So for me if i was to go on
- 18:36a guided hunt i don't know like obviously i
- 18:39would want to kill my birds but i paid x amount of
- 18:42dollars to go on a guided hunt but i think it'd
- 18:44be more of like the personality of the guy that i talked to because i i wouldn't
- 18:49something like that i would want to talk to someone in person on the phone or
- 18:55whether it be in person if they're close enough but i'd rather talk to them
- 18:59and kind of get their personality and kind of the persona they give off.
- 19:04Cause that's the biggest thing out hunting.
- 19:07Like if, if somebody is just being like, just comes off as a douchebag,
- 19:12the hunt's not going to be fun. Even if you kill your birds.
- 19:16Been on hunts that i don't know smoke some people
- 19:19just weren't getting along or the vibe just wasn't it that day
- 19:22and we mashed them but it really wasn't that
- 19:24memorable of a hunt my most memorable hunts are the ones
- 19:27where we had a good time through the day rather than didn't
- 19:30matter what we killed the jokes and the commodity was
- 19:33what's what was it for me i feel
- 19:36like that goes into the grind of it too like obviously that's gonna wear on
- 19:39the guide i mean not every day they're gonna
- 19:41to be chipper just fuck yeah let's go
- 19:44duck hunt that shit's
- 19:47got to get old at some point yeah i would i
- 19:50would say probably that plays a big part of it later in the season the guide's
- 19:55probably gonna be like yeah just kill your fucking birds get the fuck out of
- 19:58here yeah compared to the beginning of the season he don't give a shit he's
- 20:01just happy to be there happy to be doing it again let's go mop some teal hell
- 20:05yeah blue wings for life laughs.
- 20:10Like another big thing like I know you and I can definitely relate to this
- 20:12and Austin would be the same way like on a pheasant hunt
- 20:15if you went on a guided one which he's spoiled he doesn't have
- 20:18to do that but bringing your own dog I
- 20:21feel like that's something you should probably ask about when you're thinking
- 20:24about it yeah that's a huge one because I
- 20:27mean nowadays honestly everybody that waterfowl
- 20:30hunts has a dog which is a pain in
- 20:33the ass whether it's guided hunter your five
- 20:36buddies that are going hunting with that day because everybody wants to bring their dog and
- 20:39if you tell one person if it's say it's
- 20:42joe's hunt and fred wants to bring his dog but frank's
- 20:46fred's best friend and they already got their dogs going then
- 20:50everybody just starts arguing and bickering over that that can be really annoying
- 20:55that's why i'm always very good about like i'm super lenient if there's people
- 21:01that want to bring their dogs i'm like i'll leave mine at home dude he hunts
- 21:04plenty and i've gotten the same way too.
- 21:08I mean, Ellie hunts plenty regardless through the year.
- 21:11So, honestly, she probably appreciates the day to hang out in the house and
- 21:17sleep all day and just get into whatever she gets into during the day.
- 21:21I do know here in the next couple years that's going to be getting tough for
- 21:24you and I knowing that it's kind of winding down for them.
- 21:27I feel like we're going to want to take them every single chance we can.
- 21:32I was curious how Ellie was going to do this year because, I don't know, just...
- 21:37I've growing up all my labs have never made up much past like 10 years old so,
- 21:44once you get over that like six seven year mark they really either hit a brick
- 21:48wall or they go all the way till the end yep so luckily Ellie did great this
- 21:53year again so we'll see how next year goes if she hits that wall then or if
- 21:57we're just gonna coast into retirement.
- 22:01Mike did good, though, too. Like, he had a great year this year,
- 22:04especially for the, being like the first year we've really taken him with us in the boat.
- 22:09Yeah. Granted, he didn't really get in the boat much other than when it was
- 22:12really cold and he smelled breakfast.
- 22:15A dog knows what's up. He does not miss a meal.
- 22:19He definitely showed up in the back boat like, hey, got any extra breakfast for a guy like me?
- 22:28I don't know what it is about that dog but since he's
- 22:31been a year old dude he's he goes
- 22:35out fast to get the duck soon as he gets it in his mouth he's like
- 22:38i'm taking my time dude there are
- 22:40so many dogs like that though i i've hunted over a lot of dogs and ellie will
- 22:46do that from time to time but leo my buddy sean's dog he would just tear ass
- 22:52out there at after the duck or the goose and then on the way back he's like
- 22:55oh i'm kind of tired now i'll get there when i get there.
- 23:00Dude it used to piss me off so bad and then i finally i was like i'm not gonna
- 23:04get him over it but that's just how he is yeah so like another big one to look
- 23:12for i think i forgot like like For an outfitter,
- 23:16it would be a DIY outfitter.
- 23:19There's a lot of those out there now that they just go out and they lease the
- 23:22land, and they have one guy that goes out and scouts.
- 23:27And if you call them and you book a hunt, they'll tell you, hey,
- 23:30the birds have been here.
- 23:32And some of them will provide decoys and gear, or decoys like lucky ducks,
- 23:38spinners, you know, that kind of stuff, for an extra charge.
- 23:41Or you can just bring all your own stuff. They just supply the ground you can
- 23:45hunt and tell you where the birds have been using and you go out and do it yourself.
- 23:49Yeah. I think that would be, that would be, I don't know how Canada is because
- 23:53I haven't been there ever, really. It's been so long.
- 23:58If I was to go to Canada, that would be something I would highly consider doing
- 24:02just to get, make sure that we were able to hunt some land.
- 24:06Cause I don't, I mean, I don't even know how hard it is to get permission in Canada.
- 24:11I'm sure it's about like anywhere. Like you guys kind of fought it in North Dakota.
- 24:15It's gotta be about the same. I've heard mixed reviews on it.
- 24:18I've heard it can be pretty easy, but I've heard some people say it's a pain
- 24:21in the butt, but maybe it's a personality thing. I don't know.
- 24:25Yeah, it could be. I mean, that's like we, last week we talked about landowners and permissions.
- 24:31And I think the first vibe that you give off to somebody is the biggest thing ever.
- 24:36For sure. When you get permission.
- 24:39I don't know. Either way, none of us have ever used a guide or an outfitter,
- 24:43but obviously off of firsthand, I mean, you got Habitat Flats,
- 24:47Cadillac Creek, that are two of the biggest ones in the waterfowl industry nowadays.
- 24:52Days, I think, to the ones I notice.
- 24:55Then I think you got Dirty Bird Outfitters, Maxed Out Guide Service.
- 25:01Did you ever figure out the name of the other one you were talking about earlier?
- 25:04Nope, I couldn't find it. Okay.
- 25:07There's plenty of good ones out there, but obviously, definitely,
- 25:11you want to do your homework before you get one, because if you're spending
- 25:14that kind of money on it, you're going to be really pissed off if you get there
- 25:17and the guy's a douchebag, or it's not what you're expecting at all.
- 25:22Kate's deep in research. Yeah, I'm trying to find it.
- 25:28I know you guys have heard of him. Rick Hamm, show me your snows outdoors.
- 25:33He's kind of fell off lately.
- 25:35Dude used to have the biggest snow goose spreads out there that
- 25:39is something that i just can't ever see myself
- 25:42getting super deep into like i'd like to go out one
- 25:45day a year but shooting snow geese dude i there's so
- 25:48many fucking decoys it's insane it's
- 25:52a lot of fun though when you get on them if you're hunting a field or a big
- 25:55feed and you just start burning them down and you're killing 150 200 birds that's
- 26:00a lot of fun yeah the worst thing for me is just time like springtime super
- 26:05busy for us getting ready for race season and usually starting race season around
- 26:08that time so beer money I don't usually have a lot of time for the actual fun shit,
- 26:15Austin why do you look so miserable just sitting here no I'm not I'm just listening
- 26:19taking all this in laughing,
- 26:24So those all the, did you ever respond to what you would look for looking if
- 26:29you were to book a guided hunt?
- 26:32Yeah. I mean, I talked about the cost, but to be honest with you,
- 26:35like I've never even thought about doing a guided hunt at this point.
- 26:42Like Tyler also never answered if he would be a guide or not.
- 26:50I feel like this would get juicy. i
- 26:53wanted to do it when i was younger like i
- 26:56really i really thought i would enjoy it and i still
- 26:59think i still think i would enjoy it because honestly throughout
- 27:02the season i don't get as wore down of hunting as a lot of people do obviously
- 27:08i get tired of it at times but i feel like i do better holding up to it to a
- 27:14point than a lot of people do it's just i don't want it to be a job right Cause that,
- 27:22I feel like once it becomes a job, it kind of takes the, not all of it.
- 27:26Obviously it's always fun shooting
- 27:27shit, but I feel like that takes a lot of the fun aspect out of it.
- 27:32Well, especially if you get them bad clients, you know, you get,
- 27:35you get a group of guys that just say you have a slower day.
- 27:39Like you're, you're killing ducks, but you're not murdering ducks and they're just crabby,
- 27:45which I understand cause they just spent all this money to come
- 27:48hunt with you and they expected you to put them on birds and
- 27:51it's the bird just don't cooperate that day that would
- 27:54be what killed it for me yeah just because you're you're trying to satisfy these
- 28:00people that paid this x amount of money and that are also you're relying on
- 28:04them to tip you to make your living because i mean i i don't think guides make
- 28:09much money per hour or per hunt i think it's more unless you own the outfitter and you're small.
- 28:16It's more or less tips that you're living off of. Yeah. So I don't think I would
- 28:22ever do it. I used to always want to do it, but.
- 28:25Maybe 20 years ago when you were in your 20s? Oh. All right.
- 28:32Damn. That wasn't 20 years ago.
- 28:36Damn near. 30. That wasn't 30. 15.
- 28:41Bullshit. Literally 15 years ago is when I would have been willing to do something like that.
- 28:47It's a younger man's game. Although I do have one good buddy that still does it.
- 28:53And they're actually a pretty upper guy in service. Final Descent.
- 28:56They're out of Lubbock, Texas.
- 28:59Puts you on the little geese and cranes. They smack the shit out of them every year.
- 29:04They used to go to Canada, but I don't know if he's gone back since COVID.
- 29:10COVID really changed that stuff. COVID fucked up a lot of stuff.
- 29:15COVID fucked damn near everything up. Yeah. Yeah, like Walmart not being open 24-7 anymore?
- 29:21That's some bullshit. Yeah, trash.
- 29:24McDonald's doesn't have breakfast all day anymore? Trash.
- 29:28Fair. That's the only thing I liked from McDonald's was their breakfast.
- 29:32We lost everything good. I hate it here.
- 29:38But I think we can probably move on to our next topic. One that dad knows all about.
- 29:44If Austin will talk, he can go ahead and introduce the next topic.
- 29:47I feel like it's Pookie's turn to talk here. Yeah, now he's busy clickbaiting
- 29:51something on TikTok probably.
- 29:52No, I'm just going back and forth from the stream to the dock. Relax.
- 29:57So we'll kind of transition now and from the guides and outfitters into freelance
- 30:02hunting, something that Tyler definitely has a bunch of experience in.
- 30:07Kate has quite a bit experience into it as well, and I'm just kind of along
- 30:12for the ride. Getting your feet wet.
- 30:15Splashing in the water.
- 30:21He's listening to the song. He's got his toes in the sand all the time. Mm-hmm. No.
- 30:28So, side note, we didn't kill our birds this weekend because I didn't listen to Pink Pony Club.
- 30:34You didn't listen to Pink Pony Club on your way out hunting?
- 30:37No. You're fired. Fired. I know.
- 30:39You're the one that yells at us for not listening to it. I know.
- 30:43Mistakes were made. Mistakes were made. You guys were fucked from the get-go.
- 30:48Was that before or after you lost your keys? No.
- 30:52Yeah dude i i can't wait about that i can't
- 30:55wait to post the clip of that with the audio because
- 30:58obviously if he didn't if he would have parked 10 more
- 31:01feet farther forward we'd had it all on video but the
- 31:05sound of him hitting the ground and go oh fuck that hurt i feel like this episode
- 31:13for me is just a constant shout out to my wife and how awesome she is because
- 31:17i just so happened to turned my truck off and got the whole key not detected
- 31:21i'm like hmm that's really weird,
- 31:25had to call call her get her out of the house in a snowstorm and bless her heart she's,
- 31:35messing around in the snow looking for just a key fob i mean that's that's all
- 31:40i have i'm not one of those guys that carries around a whole bunch of keys with
- 31:43them so she's looking for a key fob and four fresh inches of snow at Tyler's house.
- 31:51Yeah, I've seen it on camera. Her all bundled up trying to dig in the snow.
- 31:55I'm like, that poor girl.
- 31:57Yeah, no, she's a stud. Yeah, for anyone that doesn't know, go listen to our
- 32:01first podcast episode and listen to how much shit he was talking about her that day.
- 32:08Don't. I had to hear about that. I still hear about that.
- 32:12I was wondering about that. We never did talk about how much shit we got over.
- 32:16Oh, yeah. Talking a little trash. Yeah.
- 32:18But I heard it was equal on both parties talking shit.
- 32:21Oh, yeah. No, it was. If you go and listen to their podcast, it's not just us.
- 32:26Like, it's I mean, it's or it's not just me. Like, it's all of us.
- 32:31Like, she talks about how much you guys steal me away from her and how much
- 32:36she actually hates you guys secretly.
- 32:40Ask if here hopefully in the next couple
- 32:44weeks within the next two three four weeks we're gonna
- 32:47be doing video podcast on youtube are you
- 32:50gonna cover up the cornfield confidential in the back and put your own little
- 32:53thing back there for just our episode or what you're gonna do i don't know i'm
- 32:56gonna have to take it up with the boss that is all that is all hand-drawn back
- 33:02there no i mean it looks good too yeah no she did a she did a stand-up job on
- 33:07that thing she's even got the lights coming down from it,
- 33:10their podcast is much more aesthetically pleasing than ours.
- 33:15Definitely not as good, but they'll get there, maybe.
- 33:18There it is. There it is. You're welcome.
- 33:22Yep. It was nice. Definitely not cooking us breakfast in a few weeks.
- 33:26Yeah, it was nice knowing you guys never see you again. Rip.
- 33:31That's all right. They got to make it to this point of the podcast to hear that.
- 33:34You should be safe. We're halfway through.
- 33:38Anyways let's get back to a
- 33:42topic of some sort here yeah back in
- 33:45freelance hunting oh was that what it was yeah how damn expensive it expensive
- 33:52it is nowadays words words are tough words are tough i it's late it's getting
- 33:58late it's past my bedtime it's not even nine o'clock to DIY.
- 34:02It's almost 10 o'clock here. All right, lock it in. I'm tired of both of you.
- 34:09I mean, the cost of doing it yourself nowadays, depending on how you want to do it, is astronomical.
- 34:16There are cheap ways to do it. You don't have to go all out. I mean...
- 34:23Does it help having a crazy amount of
- 34:26decoys I would say probably three fourths of
- 34:28the time yeah but there's times where we go
- 34:31out and throw two dozen so at that cost that's nothing two dozen decoys I mean
- 34:38decoys are still expensive but two dozen is more realistic for everybody very
- 34:43manageable in that aspect of it yeah I mean you can honestly haul all of your
- 34:49shit in two trucks if you did it that way
- 34:51No trailer, no nothing. Just throw all your shit in the truck.
- 34:54Well, I mean, even if you're hunting on water, you don't got to have a giant
- 34:59boat to go out there and kill ducks on the water.
- 35:01You could go out there with a 14, 15, 16-foot boat and stand in the willows and kill them.
- 35:08Funny hearing that come from you.
- 35:12It's a lot nicer doing it in a boat. Yeah, it is. I will agree.
- 35:16He overcompensates for something with a big truck and a big boat.
- 35:20Yeah, it's called retards that I hunt with.
- 35:24Well, why do you invite so many of them? Yeah. I don't invite them.
- 35:28They just keep showing up. Yeah.
- 35:31Oh, shit.
- 35:35Dang it, I hate you guys. No, I mean, it's definitely wildly expensive.
- 35:41When you start getting the motion decoys or just all the knick-knack stuff you
- 35:47can get nowadays and then the cost of fuel to get there.
- 35:53I don't know what gas is, but diesel's always over $3 a gallon now. Words. Tough.
- 36:02And then generally it can be up to over 400 or 400 i words are really tough tonight on lock it in,
- 36:10diesel can be over four dollars a gallon sometimes too and it's i mean that
- 36:13ain't cheap no matter which way you look at it yeah especially like our north
- 36:17dakota trip when we just kind of rolled right into scouting so then we're scouting
- 36:22while pulling the trailer which,
- 36:24makes not only does it make scouting harder when you're pulling a 24 foot long
- 36:29trailer but But I mean, it's just that extra weight that you got to pull around
- 36:33and eat more fuel and fuel bill just continues to go up.
- 36:3710 out of 10, don't recommend dragging the trailer around everywhere scouting. No, that sucked.
- 36:43Did you get any pickles where you had to do like a 75 point turn to get turned
- 36:47around or? No, we just backed all the way out of this one road.
- 36:51We were like a solid mile down this dirt road.
- 36:56It wasn't even a dirt road. It was a freaking wagon trail.
- 37:00Like that field we hunted last year where we had to carry all of our shit in.
- 37:06Yeah, that sucked too. Yeah. That was the same thing. Pull down, back out.
- 37:12Yeah. I mean, with freelance hunting too, you got the challenge of getting on private land.
- 37:18Out of state, in state, you know, or, and also around outfitters.
- 37:25There's so many outfitters nowadays that it can make it extremely challenging especially,
- 37:32in the dakotas or you start
- 37:35getting south like here in iowa we don't really have
- 37:38any guides and outfitters i mean there's a few but nothing major where we hunt
- 37:43but you go down to kansas missouri oklahoma texas arkansas it gets extreme again
- 37:51but like we're kind of like lucky being here where we are we're right in the
- 37:55middle because we don't we just don't have that problem,
- 37:58and so we're just battling,
- 38:00other groups of hunters that generally we know.
- 38:04Was definitely a challenge for me in North Dakota. Like, I mean,
- 38:08you just don't know anyone up there.
- 38:10So you're trying to get permission for this piece of private land and you're
- 38:13meeting somebody completely new,
- 38:15just trying to convince them to let you and your buddies like hunt their land
- 38:21where around here, I mean, I've the town that I live in, I've grown up here my entire life.
- 38:26The majority of my family is either around here or very close to here too.
- 38:32So when I go and talk to these farmers from around here, even if they don't
- 38:35know me, they're like, oh, well, your last name sounds familiar.
- 38:39And then you just kind of continue to talk to them. And they're like,
- 38:42oh, well, yeah, I knew your parents or I knew your grandparents.
- 38:47And then it's just kind of a little bit easier to work your way into when you
- 38:51have that avenue of knowing people, especially when you've been around the area
- 38:57and your family's been around the area for so long.
- 39:00Yeah, for sure. I I kind of struggled with that when I moved to where you're
- 39:04talking, like back where I lived, everybody kind of knew who I was.
- 39:09Like it wasn't out of the ordinary to go try to get permission.
- 39:12And people are like, oh yeah, I know who you are.
- 39:14First like year I came down here, I could not get a single field to hunt.
- 39:18I'm like, what in the hell?
- 39:21Then I found out kind of who was in the in crowd and who was,
- 39:24who was getting all the permission. And I'm like, all right,
- 39:26I know who I, I got to go somewhere else a little bit further away. Yeah.
- 39:31No, I feel like at least farmers around here too are like, they really care about two things.
- 39:40Like don't tear up their field and don't leave your trash out in the field.
- 39:45Like other than that, I mean, at least the majority of the farmers that I've talked to, like.
- 39:52Like the geese anyways so they're like shoot every single one of them i don't care gladly,
- 39:59that's i mean not not really gladly because you guys
- 40:02killed one this weekend oh damn there it is still one more than you you don't
- 40:10know that for sure nope nope i do could have ran one over my pickup truck but
- 40:16you didn't smack it with rain no the only thing that That'd be wild.
- 40:20The only thing that pickup truck is good for is getting rear-ended on Cade's Road.
- 40:26Yeah, no, it does that. It does do that.
- 40:29That's like the third thing that I've had get hit in the road. Yeah.
- 40:34That thing's bad luck. I'm never parking in front of your house again.
- 40:37Dude, same. I'm parking right in your yard if I ever come over again. Yeah.
- 40:43If you ever come over again. It might not. Might park at Casey's and just walk over there. Yeah.
- 40:50Hey, can you guys come pick me up? I'm not parking there. Well,
- 40:54I know you can survive walking home in the cold because, or I can survive walking
- 40:57over there since you walked home in the cold that day when it was like negative 15.
- 41:03No big deal, bud. Nah, it wasn't. Good thing you were dressed before.
- 41:09Worst thing was, all I had was my base layer and a freaking sweatshirt on. Yeah.
- 41:16When did you move to Knoxville, kid? I moved here in 2020 in July.
- 41:23So I lived there before you did. Yeah.
- 41:28Yeah. I mean, it is, you do, once you kind of figure out what landowners are
- 41:33not tied up with a certain group, it's pretty, it's, it's really not that hard
- 41:39to get permission for land where we are.
- 41:41It just, you got to know what property is not even to go with and look at.
- 41:46Because there are definitely a handful, but there's also, I mean,
- 41:50I'd say there's more than not that will let you honk. Yeah, for sure. Oh, for sure.
- 41:56That first year, it was just every single door I knocked on was the wrong one.
- 42:00That can be demoralizing as shit, too. And now I know that.
- 42:06Been back since nope so i
- 42:10know you got your first taste of this this year in waterfowl hunting
- 42:13but what what's the feeling of going out of
- 42:16state or country and having you know
- 42:19it wasn't i wouldn't call this trip a necessarily super
- 42:22successful trip but you know we had some successful
- 42:25hunts we had a good time a few days so what what is that
- 42:28feeling of for self-satisfaction when you can go out
- 42:31without a guide and do that it was
- 42:34just cool to be able to like just to even
- 42:37have that opportunity with a good group of guys to
- 42:40go to a completely different state that i
- 42:42personally had never hunted before and honestly
- 42:47the the day that we got into all those snows and then the very last day of the
- 42:52trip made it for me like would i have liked to shoot more ducks on that trip
- 42:57yeah absolutely but beggars can be choosers and the shit that we do is not easy to do I mean everybody,
- 43:06you you both know that everybody that listens to our podcast knows that like
- 43:10sometimes you get the better of the birds and sometimes they get the better
- 43:14of you so at least to go out there and like really get on them a couple days
- 43:19like that was just a lot of fun.
- 43:23Yeah for sure kate you've been out of state i know for sure at least once,
- 43:29how was your how was your experience of the the one time you've didn't bail
- 43:34on somebody on a hunt and drip oh facts now it's my turn i don't like you're
- 43:39not gonna live that down until you go on a hunt and drip well i'm saving a week of a.k.
- 43:44For next year so you guys can lick my nuts we'll leave it when we see it yeah
- 43:49no shit we kind of had the same struggles you guys did like
- 43:54i would have never in a million years guessed that you guys didn't time that
- 43:58perfectly but i mean when it's 65 degrees in canada why the hell would a duck move.
- 44:05But yeah kind of the same thing like we had our successful days and i mean those
- 44:10days felt pretty damn cool especially because i had never been there ever the
- 44:16guy i went with hadn't been there a ton so it was still like pretty new stuff
- 44:19to both of us and yeah i got to experience some,
- 44:24new area and there was a couple days we shot the shit out of them shot the shit
- 44:28out of geese up there kind of like you're talking it's where you guys went it's
- 44:32an absolute blast i mean it yes,
- 44:34you are totally relying on the migration there it's not like some places you
- 44:39go where they just have a natural good local population of birds that you can
- 44:44you can go find some and shoot some regardless definitely very much relying on weather to.
- 44:50There. It kind of, it kind of leads me straight into my next question though,
- 44:54for navigating river channels or lakes out of state.
- 44:59So how was that, you know, being, you had no idea where you were,
- 45:03never been there before in your life.
- 45:05And you guys are running a river all of a sudden, middle of nowhere.
- 45:10It was interesting, especially cause when we went, we slept in the boat ramp the first night.
- 45:16Cause we got there at like, I think two o'clock in the morning or some shit.
- 45:19So we just slept at the boat ramp for a couple hours and about 4
- 45:2330 we took off and i'm looking around
- 45:25and i'm like how in the fuck does he even know
- 45:28where he's going and then like even leaving that day
- 45:31going back to the boat ramp in the daylight still like it all looks the same
- 45:35dude like what the hell i get a lot of that yeah it was interesting though like
- 45:41it was fun to kind of watch him run through the channels like that and honestly
- 45:46like a lot of river running i learned from from August,
- 45:50that guy runs rivers more than anybody I know.
- 45:54He's nonstop fishing or duck hunting or whatever, but yeah, it's fun to watch that.
- 46:00And, and honestly, now that I've been running your little boat is nice to not
- 46:05have the stress of when am I going to beach this fucking thing?
- 46:09So the river there where you guys were at, it can be very deceiving because
- 46:15the, The ripples in the water that would generally show a sign of it being shallow
- 46:20water are not a lot of times.
- 46:23The river will run backwards there in random spots too. Yep.
- 46:27Because it'll hit a sand bank in front of you and turn around and come back,
- 46:31and it'll throw a ripple 50, 60, 70 yards in front of where that sandbar is.
- 46:37So you might avoid that part, and then you come back into the sand whenever
- 46:43you go around it and come back into where you thought the channel would be.
- 46:46You completely missed it and you're in three inches of water at best.
- 46:54Lot of fun though running new water for me i i usually just go yep and hope for the best we know,
- 47:02it can be fun but it's it's crazy to me too how you can go somewhere like i
- 47:08can go somewhere and i can see the water you know 100 yards in front of me and
- 47:12i can know what's the channel what's not,
- 47:14most of the time i have made mistakes a few times and had to push the boat out of areas,
- 47:22but generally you know once you get that experience in a behind behind the wheel
- 47:26of a boat you can kind of see that stuff coming at you and if you can't you
- 47:30should probably definitely go slow yeah for sure you're gonna have a long morning yep,
- 47:36Pookie don't run boats enough to even talk about that because he's a loser,
- 47:41hey come on now I've been getting into it a little bit this year a little bit
- 47:46a little bit you're getting better at it last year was your first time ever
- 47:49running a boat with a tiller handle wasn't it That was my first time ever running a boat, period.
- 47:54Ever. You know what would be a lot easier to help somebody learn where to go and how to run a boat?
- 48:02If you weren't running 65 fucking miles an hour in front of me.
- 48:07He was only doing like 54 last year, come on.
- 48:10Yeah. You know what's crazy?
- 48:14Somebody could have went and got that boat and ran into practice to get time in it, but...
- 48:20Once. And I don't even know if he ran it much that one time that it went out. Yeah, no, I did.
- 48:26I ran it quite a bit, but there's a difference in running a boat and getting
- 48:31comfortable and open big water.
- 48:33And then when you're zooming by willows going 40 miles an hour,
- 48:38like that's a little different when you're in a foot of water.
- 48:41So your judgment right now, I don't want to hear it. Same, same.
- 48:47It's even more fun when it's like 3.30 in the morning and you catch the wake
- 48:52off the willow bank from his big boat.
- 48:56You just gotta pin the throttle, close your eyes, and hope for the best.
- 49:02That was exactly what I did.
- 49:06Or when you guess a turn wrong and you jump his wake.
- 49:09Yes. That's really, really fun. Yep. That was honestly hysterical that day.
- 49:15Oh, I bet. That boat slapped the water. I'm like, he fucked up.
- 49:19I did, but I stayed in it, stayed right behind you. I was like,
- 49:23if I don't, this is going to be so much worse. Yep.
- 49:27I slowed down. I was damn near doing, like, I was almost off plane completely
- 49:31to make sure that you didn't wreck it into the bank on the other side.
- 49:37Not a chance. I looked up, and he was already at the far marker. I'm like, oh.
- 49:41We weren't even at the markers yet, bud. We were in the river channel still.
- 49:45We just came out of one of the corners.
- 49:47No, yeah. Like you were at the top marker to go around. Yes,
- 49:52you were. No, dude, you need to lay off the drugs.
- 49:55Lay off the drugs. I will die on this hill. Stay out of the evidence room. Come on. Prepare to die.
- 50:03Anyways. So, I mean, a lot that goes into freelance hunting is just be prepared
- 50:08as much as you can for any kind of hunting circumstance.
- 50:12There's so many different situations that come into it, whether it's hunting a field. of water, but,
- 50:21then weather dictates where you're going to hunt so much, whether sometimes
- 50:25it gets too cold and freezes water, then you can go hunt a field or you're going to go hunt a river.
- 50:30And there's still a lot different that can go into hunting a river compared
- 50:34to a lake because you can't navigate the river possibly.
- 50:37That are like we've talked about with your decoys. You run the big weights on
- 50:40them just in case you do have to hunt a river that's fucking ripping current.
- 50:46Or go hunt the main part of the lake where it's 20 feet deep. And it's not frozen yet.
- 50:53Right. I mean, most people, they take the Texas rig route because it's easy
- 50:56and you can tie them up. You don't really have to worry about them getting tangled up.
- 51:01They are nice. But the way you do it is the best way to do it.
- 51:07Yes and no. I mean, if you know you're not going to hunt anything over your
- 51:12waders deep and you don't care if you never hunt anything over your waders deep
- 51:17and you just don't worry about it,
- 51:19then obviously a Texas rig is the best thing for you but if you want to be able to do,
- 51:24and hunt wherever you want wherever you can then the way that you know using
- 51:29a bigger weight with longer string or just a string in general that you have
- 51:33to wrap up is the better option.
- 51:37If I could count on both of my hands how many fucking decoys I've lost because
- 51:41I threw them out too deep, I'd be really happy. But I can't count it on two hands.
- 51:45I can't even count it on my two hands and my two feet.
- 51:49Between that and current is major. Or waves. Waves even move my decoys.
- 51:58When it gets real windy, just drag them right away. Bye. Then you have the whole
- 52:02other aspect of ice jams blowing down on the river.
- 52:06Ain't nothing gonna hold them from that no unless you got a one ton pickup truck
- 52:12underwater holding them down they ain't staying they're leaving the chat driving
- 52:16t-posts in the sand and shit that'd be awesome,
- 52:20so much work so I mean maybe Austin can touch on this one a little bit the difference
- 52:27in so like if you're gonna go if you're gonna go with a guide obviously all you're gonna need is,
- 52:33just your general public license but if you got a boat and all that stuff there's
- 52:36a lot more that goes into it enclosed you gotta what do y'all gotta do there Austin well,
- 52:43I mean you have to just obviously keep your registration up at all times that
- 52:48way you don't have to see me on a non-friendly level cause nobody likes that
- 52:53but do you have a friendly level I do yeah,
- 52:57actually unless you have window tint then you're just going straight to San Quentin,
- 53:02only you only you But no, yeah, I mean,
- 53:06when you start to factor in all that stuff and like.
- 53:11Registration boat registration so on and so forth to like not only does it get
- 53:17expensive but it keeps like it's a lot of stuff to keep track of especially
- 53:22like you were saying earlier when,
- 53:25you close the doors to that trailer and then don't look at it again for a couple
- 53:29months like i mean i hate to admit this but you're smart enough to make your
- 53:35registration due at least while you're using it on a somewhat consistent basis.
- 53:40I got to renew that still. I keep forgetting to do that.
- 53:43It expires in like two weeks. Yeah, you're done for.
- 53:48And then you will see me or one of my buddies, and that's never fun for anyone.
- 53:55So yeah, I mean, as far as that, it is a lot to keep track of on top of everything else.
- 54:01It's just another thing that you constantly have to keep track of.
- 54:05But I would recommend you do like Tyler does and make it while you're at least
- 54:10somewhat consistently using it.
- 54:12So you have to look at that license plate all the time.
- 54:16Yeah, I mean, obviously you can't. The boat registration, I know in Iowa,
- 54:19is just the same time for every boat.
- 54:21It's good for three years. I think it expires in April or something like that.
- 54:25April, May. I think it's right around there.
- 54:27Yeah, April. but I think that's the
- 54:30easiest way for me to keep track of stuff is I just make my enclosed my boat
- 54:34trailers renew right there during hunting season basically so I don't forget
- 54:40it because that'll really ruin your hunt if you're going out hunting and you
- 54:44get pulled over by some douchebag and they want to harass you about your registration being expired.
- 54:52Of that. Tyler, how many places have you hunted that you had to have like a
- 54:56state-specific, even like a three-day license for your boat?
- 55:00A lot of states require you to get an invasive species, aquatic invasive species
- 55:08registration, which is, it's normally not much.
- 55:10It's like $10, $15, maybe $20 on the high end.
- 55:13I know Nebraska, for sure, you have to buy that.
- 55:18And I think, I'm pretty sure North Dakota, you have to buy that too.
- 55:22And it's a lot of states, you got to at least pay that 10, 15,
- 55:2720, whatever it is, fee to bring your boat there.
- 55:29I don't ever put the sticker on my boat. You're definitely supposed to.
- 55:36But if you, you generally, every time I've been stopped about it or questioned
- 55:40about it, as long as I have that registration with me and that sticker with me, they don't care.
- 55:46But if you don't have it on you, then they're probably going to write you a
- 55:48ticket for it if it's not on the boat.
- 55:50I feel like half the time in Iowa, if you don't have the sticker on your boat,
- 55:54you're going straight to fucking prison.
- 55:56That's crazy, because I've never been... Well, once this year.
- 56:01Once. I was going to say, hold on. Wait a minute.
- 56:05And it was on me. It was definitely on me. Should have been on your boat.
- 56:10Well, you know what? It takes two to three business days to cure to my boat with extra glue.
- 56:17Prison. Yeah. No, definitely. He wanted to take me to prison.
- 56:20It was phenomenal. He should have, honestly. Yeah, no, he definitely should have.
- 56:26So, I mean, that pretty much wraps up those topics we got for this week.
- 56:31I mean, you guys got anything else to add?
- 56:35I don't really think so, not for the topics this week. I think we can just roll
- 56:39right into closing thoughts. Nope.
- 56:43All right, goodbye.
- 56:47Exits the chat. I mean, well, pretty much we're getting ready.
- 56:52We're ramping up goose season here. Pretty much duck season's totally over now as of Tuesday in Iowa.
- 57:02So can you get your phone to check and see if it's actually over?
- 57:05No, that thing just will not shut the hell up. Oh.
- 57:10So, Southern Zone ends Tuesday, and then there ain't nothing open in Iowa other than the North Zone.
- 57:18You can go goose hunting, but goose season opens back up on Saturday for Central
- 57:23Zone, and I'm really looking forward to hopefully, which I'm pretty sure I'll be home for that,
- 57:30getting out there and doing that, even though Pookie's not going to join us
- 57:33Saturday morning. No, I'll be there.
- 57:36I'll just get there. I'll get there after you guys set up and put all the decoys
- 57:42out and start breakfast are you gonna just swim out there or what do you think
- 57:46of there no I'll figure it out,
- 57:51it'll be warm enough maybe he'll just come out there in a speedo doing the backstroke
- 57:54on his way out on river thought about it twice could very well be I hope he's
- 57:59not don't need to see that.
- 58:04Something out. I'll make one of you guys feel bad enough to come pick me up.
- 58:08Probably not. Yeah, it's going to take a lot of work, dog.
- 58:13I'm very convincing.
- 58:17I mean, it's either that or your truck's on block on blocks at the boat ramp. So, take your pick.
- 58:26Damn. I think I might try my luck. Do it. I dare you. Going to leave the work
- 58:32truck on blocks or what? might as well,
- 58:37damn he got me there anyways,
- 58:42you guys got anything you want to say to the people what you got pookie I know
- 58:47you got something brewed up,
- 58:49no it's just this is dude he's just angry at the world today I don't really
- 58:53understand why no stop he's getting that look on his face it must just be the
- 58:59monkeys banging cymbals banging cymbals.
- 59:05This is like the reset the last reset that we get for the year right here and
- 59:12it goes into the final stretch of goose season and I hope we bang them up I
- 59:17hope everybody that listens to us gets the opportunity to go out and hunt and
- 59:21bang them up themselves and hopefully the weather,
- 59:25cooperates along with the geese,
- 59:28I mean it's shaping up to be a better goose season than normal We got the geese
- 59:32already, and we're getting an abnormally late warm-up, I would say.
- 59:38I mean, we always get a warm-up in December, but it's later than normal.
- 59:41So we're going to have open water, and we're going to have water to hunt in general.
- 59:47The lake level is higher than it has been in recent years.
- 59:50So I'm pretty pumped for that. I think it could be one of our better goose years to date this year.
- 59:57RIP to the geese. Hmm.
- 1:00:02I mean Ellie's already resting up for it She's been sleeping since like I don't
- 1:00:05know 12 o'clock today getting ready for goose season I feel like she's just
- 1:00:10being lazy Probably We're gonna go with she's getting ready for goose season though Sounds better.
- 1:00:23But I think that'll about do it for this week,
