- 9:39If any person is born again through faith in Jesus Christ,

- 9:53all he sees is his son. Therefore, if any one
- 9:56is in Christ, he is a new creation. Old things

- 10:42by faith, choosing to agree with God. To day, I
- 10:46choose to agree with God. Jesus takes great delight in me.
- 10:51He sings, rejoices, and dances over me. To day, I

- 11:38me every morning. This is a new day, and I
- 11:41have new mercies today in my life. Today I choose
- 11:45to agree with God. I have power, love, and a
- 11:48sound mind. I have a raised fear from my life.
- 11:52I walk in truth always I know who I am
- 11:55in God, Amen, So be it. Nominal Life and career
- 12:01of Samuel Houston by Bob Deaton. There have been many
- 12:05American politicians who have had remarkable political careers. For example,
- 12:10Arizona Democrat Carl Trumbull Hayden eighteen seventy seven to nineteen
- 12:14seventy two spent better than fifty seven years in Congress
- 12:17before retiring in nineteen sixty nine. South Carolina strom Thurmond
- 12:22was elected to office as a write end for governor
- 12:25as a U. S. Senator, both as a Democrat and
- 12:27later as a Republican, and ran for president in nineteen
- 12:30forty eight on the Dixiecrat party ticket, where he carried
- 12:34four states with thirty nine electoral votes. There are many
- 12:37other unusual examples, however, none can compare with the phenomenal
- 12:41political career of the legendary Samuel Houston seventeen ninety three
- 12:46to eighteen sixty three. Samuel was born in Virginia and
- 12:50moved to East Tennessee when he was thirteen years old.
- 12:53He ran away from home when he was fifteen to
- 12:55live with the Cherokee Indians. The Cherokee Indians of East Tennessee,
- 13:00Western North and South America were not the wild, uncivilized
- 13:03savages often portrayed in movies and books via radio and
- 13:06television today. They instead were increasingly assimilating into the white
- 13:11population and adapting the white folks customs and ways of
- 13:14earning a living. In fact, a few years after Sam
- 13:17Houston left their villages, many had learned to read and write,
- 13:22owned large farms, and many dressed like the white folks,
- 13:25and a few even owned large plantations worked by black slaves.
- 13:29The Great Cherokee Sequoia invented a system of writing the
- 13:34Cherokee language. This system was used to publish Indian newspapers
- 13:38and other books. Literally hundreds of Indians have learned to
- 13:42read and write by the time Andrew Jackson's Indian Removal
- 13:44Act was implemented in the late eighteen thirties that forced
- 13:48these proud folks to move to Oklahoma. Thousands died along
- 13:52the infamous Trail of Tears to Oklahoma. After leaving the Indians.
- 13:56When he turned eighteen, Sam Houston owned school, opened a school,
- 14:01studied law, and became a lawyer. In eighteen twenty three,
- 14:05he was elected to Congress and served four years. He
- 14:08then ran for governor of Tennessee and was elected. However,
- 14:12he only served two years before resigning due to domestic
- 14:15problems with his wife. In eighteen thirty one, Houston moved
- 14:19to Texas, which was then a part of Mexico. The
- 14:22Texans soon rebelled against the Mexican authorities. Houston subsequently was
- 14:26appointed to be their commander in chief. Over the next
- 14:30few months, a series of battles ensued against the Mexicans,
- 14:33led by Santa Anna, the Mexican dictator. Eventually, the Texans
- 14:37defeated the Mexican army at the Battle of San Jacinto.
- 14:40Santa Anna was forced to seed Texas its independence, and
- 14:44Texas became the Republic of Texas, with Sam Houston as
- 14:47its president. Texas was an independent nation from eighteen thirty
- 14:51six to eighteen forty five. Houston served as its president
- 14:55from eighteen thirty six to eighteen thirty eight, and then
- 14:58again from eighteen forty one to eighteen five four. However,
- 15:01during those years, Houston and many other Texans were attempting
- 15:04to convince the United States Congress to accept Texas as
- 15:08a new state. Many northern congressmen opposed the idea of
- 15:11a new state from the South over the slavery issue. Finally, however,
- 15:15in eighteen forty five, a reluctant Congress accepted Texas as
- 15:19a new state. Sam Houston was then one of the
- 15:23two senators from the new state. He served in the U. S.
- 15:26Senate from eighteen forty six to eighteen fifty nine. He
- 15:30then was elected governor of Texas. His popularity, however, had
- 15:34been greatly diminished because he opposed this secession issue that
- 15:38was quickly gaining popularity across Texas and the South. After
- 15:42only two years in office, he was forced to resign.
- 15:45Houston then retired to Huntsville, Texas, where he died in
- 15:48eighteen sixty three. The city of Houston and a fort
- 15:51in San Antonio bear his name. He also represents Texas
- 15:55in Statuary Hall in Washington, d c. Samuel Houston's degree
- 15:59of political coverage, exemplified by his opposition to the secession
- 16:03issue in Texas, earned his inclusion in former President Kennedy's
- 16:06book Profile and Courage as one of a select few
- 16:10politicians who placed principles over politics. In conclusion, the poor
- 16:14lad from East Tennessee grew up to be a lawyer,
- 16:17a congressman from Tennessee, the Governor of Tennessee, the Commander
- 16:21in chief of the Texas Army, the President of the
- 16:23Republic of Texas, the Governor of Texas, and finally, the
- 16:27United States Senator from Texas. Samuel Houston's political and personal
- 16:31career will likely never be replicated. Life on the Old
- 16:37Dirt Road by Bobby Thorpe More nineteen seventies decade memories.
- 16:43Many trends from the seventies are still popular today. For instance,
- 16:46restaurant foods in the seventies consisted of McDonald's having the
- 16:49quarter pounder, Big Mac, Happy Meal, and ag McMuffin. Last week,
- 16:53I mentioned the ice cube trays and a friend of mine,
- 16:56Astell Macintosh, reminded me of how his mother poured different
- 16:59flavors of kool aid and in the ice trays and
- 17:01covered the tray with plastic wrap. A toothpick was then
- 17:04punctured through the plastic wrap, and after the cubes became frozen,
- 17:07you had homemade popsicles. On TV, I watched Schoolhouse Rock
- 17:12during Saturday cartoons. We were taught grammar and punctuation with conjunction, junction,
- 17:16what's your function? And were also taught math and about
- 17:20government with I'm Just a Bill. The Electric company also
- 17:23educated us at home on TV. Light Bright and the
- 17:26easy Bake oven were some of the many toys for
- 17:28boys and girls at school. We could forget the overhead projectors,
- 17:33the paper and pencil store at eight at LBJ school,
- 17:37the pits and the school pizzas, hand cranked pencil sharpeners
- 17:40at school, and the contraption that held three pieces of
- 17:43chalk that would draw sentence lines on the chalkboard also
- 17:46remain in my memories. Also, it was a reward to
- 17:49get to go outside at school and clean the chalkboard erasers.
- 17:53We also carried our lunch to school in a metal
- 17:55lunch box which contained a thermos for hot soup or drinks.
- 18:00Clothing included corduroy pants, bell bottom blue jeans, and in
- 18:03school at LBJ, we wore our socks and pulled our
- 18:05shoes off during class. Dad and my uncles used a
- 18:08CBE radio, especially at night. Dad CBE handle was road
- 18:12runner and my uncles had handled such as Hermit Cranky
- 18:16and many others. An antenna was installed high on a
- 18:19pole on top of the hill and cables were ran
- 18:21to the antenna and connected to the CBE base station
- 18:24in the home. There were also CBS in vehicles and
- 18:28the coal trucks running up and down South Fork. The
- 18:30last time I walked to the top of the hill,
- 18:32remnants of old CB and TV antennas were still found
- 18:35in the leaves and on trees. The rotary telephone was
- 18:39also a fixture in homes. They were corded heavy and
- 18:43to make a call one dialed four numbers. The party
- 18:46lines began on the Old Dirt Road before I was
- 18:48born in nineteen sixty nine, but by the mid seventies
- 18:51private lines were an option. The party line was where
- 18:54many in the community could pick up the phone receiver
- 18:56and have a conversation at one time with everyone who
- 18:59was using the line at the time that was connected
- 19:01to the Saint grid. These are great memories from my
- 19:04toddler years living on the Old Dirt Road. On the
- 19:09music Trail with Kathy by Kathy Bays Alberts, the Bellamy Brothers.
- 19:15Finishing up with my column on the Bellamy Brothers. They
- 19:18were inducted into Florida Artists Hall of Fame in twenty eighteen.
- 19:23Other awards include Grammy nominations for Best Country Performance by
- 19:26a Duo or Group and Best Country and Western Song
- 19:30nineteen eighty. They were named the most Group of the
- 19:32Year by the Country Music Association in nineteen eighty Lifetime
- 19:37membership of the Federation of International Country Air Personalities nineteen
- 19:41eighty two, named the cop Top Country Duo by Billboard
- 19:44nineteen eighty two record for the most duo nominations in
- 19:48both the Academy of Country Music and the Academy of
- 19:51Country Music Association and the Country Music Association. The list
- 19:55could go on, but space doesn't permit all of them.
- 19:58The brothers have two hundred or more concert dates worldwide
- 20:01each year. They've held concerts in the United States, Europe, Australia,
- 20:06South Africa, and have been to Dubai, Saudi Arabia, India,
- 20:10New Caledonia, Sri Lanka, the Czech Republic, and the Faroe Islands.
- 20:15They played for the US troops in Bosnia and on
- 20:17Easter Sunday, they played for US troops stationed in warren
- 20:20torn Kosovo, as well as a concert at a remote
- 20:23camp in Macedonia. In twenty fourteen, they toured in India,
- 20:27Sri Lanka and made history as the first country music
- 20:30act touring in these countries. In twenty nineteen and twenty
- 20:34twenty they were in the Blake Shelton Heroes Tour. They
- 20:37traveled around the world playing benefit concerts for American troops abroad.
- 20:42They live in Darby, Florida, on a two hundred acre
- 20:44ranch where they raised quarter horses and Brahmin cattle. Three
- 20:48generations of their family live in the compound, which is
- 20:51also the location of their music studio, where much of
- 20:53their music is recorded. In conclusion, I've heard a lot
- 20:57of what I call classic country groups, but with the
- 21:00Bellamy Brothers, it was like stepping back in time. Their
- 21:03voices were as strong and pure as ever. If you
- 21:06get a chance to see them, you won't be disappointed.
- 21:09Till next week and another concert on the music Trail.
- 21:14Recipes with Kathy, Here's a new twist for an old favorite,
- 21:19sour cream corn bread. Three eggs, well beaten, one half

- 21:28one cup Golden style cream corn or green giant mexicorn,
