- 0:00What's up, everybody? Charlie Marlow here, talking a
- 0:02little Cardinals baseball. Are you excited about the Billy
- 0:05Joel and Sting concert for this year?
- 0:08Are you pumped? Yes.
- 0:10No, we're not really going to talk about that.
- 0:11That was the news yesterday. Some people are going crazy.
- 0:15Hey, you. You can't have a concert when
- 0:17you're trying to sign players. It's just a concert, folks.
- 0:20It's just a concert. And you know what?
- 0:21I'll probably go. I saw Billy Joel at Busch
- 0:24Stadium several years ago and it was awesome.
- 0:27I'm not a huge Sting guy, but I would go to that show for sure.
- 0:30Anyway, I want to talk about Dylan Cease because there was
- 0:34some chatter also last night with Ken Rosenthal reporting
- 0:37that the Cardinals could still possibly be interested.
- 0:41So look, man, don't be mad at me.
- 0:44Don't be mad at me for talking about Dylan Cease.
- 0:46Do I think it's going to happen? No.
- 0:49But it's interesting to talk about for a a couple different
- 0:53reasons and this is the time of year.
- 0:54We're not. A lot is going on.
- 0:56Everybody's waiting on all these other pitchers.
- 0:58Blake Snell, Jordan Montgomery and all that.
- 1:01So you got a guy like Cease who's in the trade market.
- 1:03Clearly. By the way before I get to Cease
- 1:06also, I just saw Michael Brantley has retired according
- 1:09to John Paul Morosi. Michael Brantley very good
- 1:12player. One of those guys always, always
- 1:15linked to the Cardinals. When he come to the Cardinals
- 1:16with the Cardinals sign him. I feel like for about 8 years it
- 1:19was always will Michael Brantley come to the Cardinals?
- 1:21Well, he never did. Heck of a career.
- 1:24And now he's retiring. But back to Dylan C So here's
- 1:28the actual report. I did write it down.
- 1:32I made a couple notes here. So from Ken Rosenthal in The
- 1:35Athletic. So he said Ken Rosenthal, who's
- 1:39one of the best in the business. Let's be real.
- 1:41I'm a big fan of Ken Rosenthal. Very, very great reporter.
- 1:44Always been very good to me. Just seen him over the years and
- 1:47interviewing him here and there. So he says the Yankees and the
- 1:51Orioles have, quote, sincere interest, sincere interest.
- 1:55I think this is pretty funny because that basically means who
- 1:58are the teams that are actually really interested?
- 2:01Probably the New York Yankees and the Baltimore Orioles.
- 2:04That's sincere interest. So also in the article it says
- 2:10the Dodgers, the Cardinals, and the Red Sox, possibly still in
- 2:14the mix because of basically previously reported interest.
- 2:19So there's the kicker right there.
- 2:22Are the Cardinals actually still interested?
- 2:24Was this was this a month or so ago?
- 2:27Was this before you signed Gray and Lynn and Kyle Gibson?
- 2:32We know the Cardinals were reportedly interested in Tyler
- 2:36Glass. Now, Tyler Glass now said that
- 2:38on on foul territory the show with AJ Perszynski.
- 2:41So are the Cardinals really, actually sincerely interested in
- 2:46Dylan Sees right now? Look, I'm sure they're kicking
- 2:49the tires on them. Are they actually going to make
- 2:51that deal? I'd say hell no.
- 2:53I I think it's, it's like I said with the Yamamoto.
- 2:57What is it a 1% chance. It's it's a 1% chance.
- 3:01It's something like that. Dylan sees has two years of
- 3:04control left. So here's another interesting
- 3:06part though. I want to just reiterate for the
- 3:0887th time, I do not think the Cardinals are going to trade for
- 3:12Dylan sees this winter. I also don't know is, is he
- 3:15going to get moved? Because if you're the White Sox,
- 3:18don't you have almost as much trade value for Dylan Cease at
- 3:21the deadline as you do right now?
- 3:23Because he has two years of control.
- 3:25So a team will still get him for two playoff runs if they trade
- 3:29for him at the deadline. And also he's coming off not a
- 3:33great year, I think. I think another thing that's
- 3:36interesting to talk about with Dylan Cease, and maybe I talk
- 3:40about FIP too much, but look, he had the fantastic year two
- 3:45seasons ago. From an ERA standpoint.
- 3:48That year, his ERA was 2.20. All right, that was 2022.
- 3:55Even that year, though, his FIP was 3.1.
- 3:58So his FIP, his fielding independent pitching was almost
- 4:02a full run higher than his ERA for that year.
- 4:06Now he was great again in 2022, but, and I I do like FIP, so if
- 4:11you guys don't like it, I'm sorry, I do.
- 4:13I do cite it a lot. I think it's interesting though,
- 4:15because his career ERA is 3.83 and his career FIP is 3.86.
- 4:23So that makes you think that this guy is is actually more of
- 4:27a 3.8, whatever it is type pitcher.
- 4:30Maybe he gets better. He just turned 28 years old.
- 4:33So I I do think, something interesting to discuss with
- 4:36Dylan, C says. I think sometimes we look at the
- 4:39baseball card stats, and I'm guilty of that as well.
- 4:42But if if you're thinking Dylan sees 2.20 ERA two years ago,
- 4:47you're getting an absolute stud #1 ace.
- 4:50Is he really good? Yes.
- 4:53Would I want him on the Cardinals?
- 4:54Absolutely. Would I probably slot him right
- 4:58up there before Sonny Gray. Right after Sonny Gray, with
- 5:03Sonny Gray, Whatever. Whatever you want to do.
- 5:05I mean he's a he's a front end of the starting rotation pitcher
- 5:08that that's what he is. But I mean is he more of a
- 5:11Jordan Montgomery and and there's nothing wrong with
- 5:13Jordan Montgomery I just think sometimes you know if you're
- 5:16talking about a guy with a three 8 ERA very solid dependable
- 5:21pitcher in the big leagues is that your your front end number
- 5:25one playoff ace type guy. I don't know for the Cardinals
- 5:28dude. I would take him in a heartbeat.
- 5:30Again I just I think sometimes that that ERA from two years ago
- 5:34pops oh we're getting a dude with a 2 ERA.
- 5:36Well you're more so getting a guy who's around a four and
- 5:40there's nothing wrong with that there's there's nothing wrong
- 5:42with that but do you want to give up the farm for that guy If
- 5:45you have to give up 3 or 4 high end prospects for Dylan sees for
- 5:50two years do you do that now? If you're the Cardinals if you
- 5:53make a deal for Dylan sees you're also going to sign him.
- 5:56So you're not giving up a ton for Dylan sees unless you're
- 5:58going to sign that guy long term and look he is the candidate
- 6:01just turned 28 years old. So with two years of control
- 6:05let's say he he gets traded to a team, they give him a nice
- 6:07extension and all of a sudden I mean do you get a 6-7 year deal?
- 6:12But if if you're him also, would you want to sign an extension
- 6:16unless you get a major extension?
- 6:18Think about like this, if you're don't cease you're two years
- 6:21away from free agency and you're going to hit free agency
- 6:23essentially at the age of 30. Why would you sign an extension
- 6:27when you see Aaron Nola He's getting seven years and 172.
- 6:32So he's getting paid till he's like 37 years old.
- 6:36I think you're going to see the same thing you're going to see
- 6:38Blake Snell, Jordan Montgomery probably get deals where they're
- 6:41paid till about they're 37 years old.
- 6:43So if I'm if I'm don't seize I wouldn't sign an extension
- 6:47unless you pay me till I'm 37 years old.
- 6:50So to me that's that's a nine year deal.
- 6:53Let's be real. That's a nine year deal.
- 6:55He just turned 28. He has two years of control
- 6:57left. If I'm him, I want a deal in the
- 7:00range of years of Irenoa. That means pay me till I'm 37
- 7:04years old. Give me like a nine year deal.
- 7:06And is that crazy to think of when Yamamoto is getting, what,
- 7:0912 years and all that? It's not.
- 7:11So back to the Cardinals though. We'll finish up with this.
- 7:15I do think. Look, it makes sense for the
- 7:17Cardinals to be interested in Dylan sees.
- 7:19What if he's not moved? What if he's not moved this
- 7:24winter? And what if he does play and
- 7:26pitch for the White Sox for the first four months or so?
- 7:30The Cardinals at the deadline? Is that the time to get back in?
- 7:33If Dylan Cease is still with the White Sox, you still get two
- 7:37playoff runs for Dylan Cease if that's the case, and also you
- 7:41can see what you have if you're the Cardinals.
- 7:42Because let's be real. I think most people think that
- 7:45they are going to have some injury issues when your entire
- 7:47starting rotation is eligible for AARP and they all go for the
- 7:52for the Denny's Early Bird special for for a dinner at
- 7:564:30. Obviously kidding here, But
- 7:59Sunny Gray what, 34? You have Kyle Gibson and Lance
- 8:04Lynn, 35 years old, whatever they are.
- 8:07So you have a very old pitching staff for the Saint Louis
- 8:10Cardinals. All right, I think that's about
- 8:12it. Short video.
- 8:14I told you guys I was going to be doing more on camera stuff
- 8:17here. Don't cease.
- 8:20I think it's a pipe dream, but it's OK to talk about it.
- 8:23Don't be mad at me for talking about it.
- 8:25Don't be mad at me for putting Dylan sees in the thumbnail.
- 8:27I said it's a 1% chance of happening.
- 8:30Could it happen at the deadline? We shall see.
- 8:33The Yankees and the Orioles, according to Ken Rosenthal, have
- 8:35the sincere interest. So the Cardinals are just kind
- 8:38of there. Are you happy, though, that the
- 8:40Cardinals are there? They're just in the article.
- 8:42Is that enough for you guys? The Cardinals are just in the
- 8:44article. Maybe John Mozelak is calling
- 8:47all these pitchers, calling all these teams.
- 8:49Excuse me. On these pitchers so that
- 8:51Cardinals fans will be excited when they read the articles and
- 8:54they're mentioned with the Dodgers and the Red Sox possibly
- 8:58still in the mix because of previously reported interest.
- 9:01But is it sincere interest like it is for the New York Yankees
- 9:04and the Baltimore Orioles? Probably not.
- 9:07But again, it's fun to talk about, man.
- 9:09By the way, Harrison Bader one year deal with the Mets.
- 9:13You know he's a New York guy. Got traded to the Yankees.
- 9:15Likes New York center fielder for the Mets.
- 9:18Would he get $10 million? Good for him?
- 9:19I still think he can be really, really good.
- 9:21Elite when he's healthy. Absolutely.
- 9:23Defensively elite with a lot of offensive upside.
- 9:27All right, let me know what you think.
- 9:28Comment, like, subscribe. Share the channel.
- 9:30Share the video. Share the show.
- 9:32If you like this show, I said yesterday we got the Brennan
- 9:36Schaefer Cardinals podcast coming up.
- 9:38Starting next week. That'll be fun.
- 9:40We'll do a lot of stuff. We'll do as much as as you guys
- 9:42want. If you guys watch the videos,
- 9:44We'll do a ton of stuff in 2024. I think that's it.
- 9:49Sting, Billy Joel, I will go. By the way, Billy Joel was
- 9:53awesome at this concert, whenever that was.
- 9:56When was that? He was like, was that 5-7 years
- 9:59ago? I don't even remember.
- 10:00But he sat down and he goes, all right, I don't got any new
- 10:04stuff, same old shit. He's like, I'm going to yell out
- 10:07two different songs, Whichever one you cheer for the most, I'm
- 10:10going to play. It was really cool.
- 10:12Remember, it was in the summer, so he had a family swatter.
- 10:14There were flies around him. He's on the piano.
- 10:16He's wearing his suit. He's swatting flies.
- 10:18It's good stuff. So I will probably see that
- 10:21Billy Joel is a freaking icon. He's also one of those dudes
- 10:23where it's like you go to Billy Joel concert and you know, 20
- 10:27songs. So how can you not enjoy Billy
- 10:28Joel? So there you go.
- 10:30Cardinals fans, be excited. You got Billy Joel and you got
- 10:34Sting. You're not going to get Dylan
- 10:36CS, but I'm still going to talk about it for 10 or 11 minutes.
- 10:39Congratulations on Billy Joel and Sting, but not Dylan Cease.
- 10:44Most likely because their interest is probably not really
- 10:47sincere. All right, thanks guys.
- 10:50Peace out. Have a great weekend.
- 10:52See ya.
