- 0:00Speaker 1: The first visit of the year with Jade Johnson of
- 0:05Speaker 1: the Talent Training Group. It's time for our personal defense segment.
- 0:08Speaker 1: Good morning, sir, Happy New Year. How are you? Good morning,
- 0:10Speaker 1: Happy New Year. You're welcome. Great. Yeah, I told you
- 0:14Speaker 1: before we started we're going to do things a little
- 0:17Speaker 1: bit differently today. But I want to I want to
- 0:20Speaker 1: stress to all of you, and I've already I've already
- 0:23Speaker 1: got a question coming in UH, and I have a
- 0:25Speaker 1: question here to start with, but I would love to
- 0:30Speaker 1: hear your questions. I don't want to assume that I
- 0:34Speaker 1: am going to always ask what you want to talk
- 0:36Speaker 1: about or what what you want to hear. So if
- 0:39Speaker 1: you've got a question, just email me Preston at iHeartRadio
- 0:41Speaker 1: dot com and if you'd like you can UH, you
- 0:45Speaker 1: can call us at eight five zero two zero five
- 0:48Speaker 1: wfl A. I'm not going to tell you we're going
- 0:50Speaker 1: to take calls all show long. I will tell you
- 0:52Speaker 1: that we'll fit a caller to in if you want
- 0:54Speaker 1: to call in and ask a question. Eight five zero
- 0:58Speaker 1: two zero five WFLA. That is the number, and so
- 1:04Speaker 1: give us a call. I want to start JD with
- 1:07Speaker 1: a question we got from Brian he said, what is
- 1:13Speaker 1: the effectiveness of a gun safe as a Faraday age
- 1:17Speaker 1: in the event of an EMP occurrence. Now, let's not
- 1:21Speaker 1: assume everybody understands what he's even talking about. An EMP
- 1:25Speaker 1: electromagnetic pulse.
- 1:26Speaker 2: So if you were to detonate a let's say, a
- 1:30Speaker 2: nuclear device at altitude, you could create that. And we
- 1:35Speaker 2: have naturally occurring EMPs with solar flares and things like
- 1:39Speaker 2: that that can disrupt radio communication. It can fry essentially
- 1:43Speaker 2: in Layman's terms, It can fry electronic devices, mess with
- 1:48Speaker 2: hard drives on computers, depending on what kind of hard
- 1:51Speaker 2: drive it is, do a lot of damage to electrical
- 1:54Speaker 2: electronic devices. Like I said, naturally occurring. And there's lot
- 2:00Speaker 2: of folks that are in the prepper world that are
- 2:03Speaker 2: highly concerned about about MPs. We've had naturally occurring EMPs
- 2:08Speaker 2: back in the early days of telegraph late eighteen hundreds
- 2:12Speaker 2: early nineteen hundreds was a huge event that essentially shut
- 2:16Speaker 2: down the telegraph grid in this country for a good
- 2:20Speaker 2: bit of time. It actually short short circuited, or burned
- 2:23Speaker 2: out a whole bunch of the telegraph lines.
- 2:26Speaker 1: Well, and people are on heightened nervousness because of all
- 2:30Speaker 1: of the drones that we still don't know anything about.
- 2:33Speaker 2: Right Yeah, Well, I mean it's a crazy, insane world
- 2:38Speaker 2: we live in right now.
- 2:39Speaker 1: And so what's a Faraday cage?
- 2:41Speaker 2: A Faara day cage is essentially a device that would
- 2:44Speaker 2: block that pulse and disperse.
- 2:49Speaker 1: It into the ground.
- 2:50Speaker 2: It's like a ground wire on an electric motor on
- 2:53Speaker 2: your pool pump, if you've had a swimming pool and
- 2:55Speaker 2: a pump running on it. If you'll look closely, there's
- 2:57Speaker 2: a big copper wire coming off of it, probably with
- 3:00Speaker 2: a with a copper rod driven down into the ground
- 3:03Speaker 2: so that we'll we'll transmit any electrical overcharge basically down
- 3:09Speaker 2: into the ground.
- 3:10Speaker 1: So now we get to the question about a safe. Yeah, uh,
- 3:14Speaker 1: some of them.
- 3:15Speaker 2: I have seen on some of the safe that that
- 3:19Speaker 2: out there that they say it will protect from an
- 3:22Speaker 2: e MP haven't seen that advertisement on all of them
- 3:27Speaker 2: or claim from all of them. We sell devices at
- 3:31Speaker 2: the store that are that will protect your house, in
- 3:34Speaker 2: your car.
- 3:35Speaker 1: I've got one on my truck.
- 3:36Speaker 2: It's it's a it's basically a device that because all
- 3:39Speaker 2: of our vehicles modern vehicles now, unless you're driving a
- 3:42Speaker 2: you know a pre you know pre computer in your car,
- 3:46Speaker 2: which those have been around since the eighties. Unless you're
- 3:50Speaker 2: driving something with points and plugs and a carburetor. You've
- 3:53Speaker 2: got a computer in your car that runs your car,
- 3:56Speaker 2: that your car can't operate without. And they make devices
- 4:00Speaker 2: that hook through the battery system and it's essentially if
- 4:02Speaker 2: you get an overcharge of your electrical system, it will
- 4:05Speaker 2: run it to ground and protect your car. Some of
- 4:08Speaker 2: these devices that are on the market come with an
- 4:12Speaker 2: insurance policy essentially that they'll say, okay, well if you
- 4:15Speaker 2: if we have this and our our device fails, you
- 4:19Speaker 2: get a twenty thousand dollars worth of repair stuff. So
- 4:23Speaker 2: you know, they have them for houses. Florida Power and
- 4:27Speaker 2: Light has them.
- 4:28Speaker 1: So putting a thinking of as safe as one. It's
- 4:32Speaker 1: for protecting.
- 4:34Speaker 2: Yeah, you want to put a hard drive or your
- 4:36Speaker 2: your hard disk or something on the labor tire laptop
- 4:38Speaker 2: or or even your phone. Yeah, your phone. I mean
- 4:41Speaker 2: they make Faraday bags. The military has come up with them,
- 4:44Speaker 2: come up with them years ago.
- 4:46Speaker 1: Uh.
- 4:46Speaker 2: They make little bags that you can put your phone
- 4:48Speaker 2: in that's essentially a tenfoil bag.
- 4:51Speaker 1: Yeah, that's where the tenfol hat come from. Okay. Uh. J. D.
- 4:58Speaker 1: Johnson with me of the Talent Training Group and the
- 5:00Speaker 1: Talent Range of course and Talent Outdoors. He and Charlie
- 5:04Speaker 1: hosting that on the weekends and you can listen on
- 5:06Speaker 1: these fine radio stations. You were just saying that there
- 5:09Speaker 1: is a way to test how effective your safe may
- 5:12Speaker 1: be as a Faraday cage.
- 5:13Speaker 2: Yeah, you can if you put your put your cell
- 5:16Speaker 2: phone in there and close the door and call your
- 5:19Speaker 2: cell phone. So use your spouse systhone in case somebody
- 5:23Speaker 2: else's phone to call your phone, and if you get
- 5:25Speaker 2: a signal through there, it's not If you don't get
- 5:28Speaker 2: a signal through there, you've got a Faraday cage.
- 5:31Speaker 1: Now, someone called into Jose and talked about a microwave oven.
- 5:35Speaker 2: Never heard that, but it makes perfect sense because it's
- 5:37Speaker 2: containing the microwaves, and that's a lot of what the
- 5:41Speaker 2: if we had an emp Poltz, it would probably be
- 5:44Speaker 2: in that wave range, in that wavelength which is radar
- 5:47Speaker 2: and all that kind of stuff.
- 5:49Speaker 1: Now, of course you'd have to be suspecting that one
- 5:52Speaker 1: was coming or else you've got to carry around your
- 5:54Speaker 1: phone and everything, put them in that stuff at all,
- 5:57Speaker 1: like a Faraday bag or whatever at all times. And
- 5:59Speaker 1: that's not really practical.
- 6:01Speaker 2: And if you keep your phone in a fair day
- 6:03Speaker 2: bag all the time, you're never going to get a
- 6:04Speaker 2: never gonna get a call.
- 6:05Speaker 1: It kind of kind of defeats the purpose of or
- 6:08Speaker 1: one way to slap stop the phone calls.
- 6:10Speaker 2: And I know people that have taken Faara day bags
- 6:13Speaker 2: and on some of the older, more simple vehicles where
- 6:18Speaker 2: you have an electronic fuel injection add on system to
- 6:22Speaker 2: a car like you've some of the older vehicles that
- 6:24Speaker 2: they change out points and plugs to electrically fired ignition systems,
- 6:29Speaker 2: they'll take an extra one and put in a bag
- 6:31Speaker 2: and keep it in their car in case they ever
- 6:32Speaker 2: have that kind of stuff. They can just unzip the bag, reinstall,
- 6:36Speaker 2: go down the road.
- 6:38Speaker 1: You and Charlie and I discussed on two separate segments
- 6:43Speaker 1: over a period of a couple of weeks prepping what
- 6:48Speaker 1: is the line for preparation because that is a series
- 6:52Speaker 1: of rabbit trails. Oh yeah, it's and rabbit holes that
- 6:55Speaker 1: never end. But I mean, practically speaking, JD, what.
- 6:59Speaker 2: Is everybody's everybody's got a different line. I mean, where
- 7:03Speaker 2: do you feel comfortable? You know, how much expendable income
- 7:06Speaker 2: do you have to do? Because it's not cheap. It's
- 7:09Speaker 2: so I think everybody's got that has to establish their
- 7:12Speaker 2: own where they feel comfortable at I'm probably not. You know,
- 7:17Speaker 2: I teach Charlie about grazing in the yard. You know,
- 7:19Speaker 2: he's he's gone to a lot of trouble to learn
- 7:21Speaker 2: what you can and can't eat that's naturally in our
- 7:24Speaker 2: environment whatever else. I just you know, I kind of
- 7:27Speaker 2: look at things a little bit differently. So I think
- 7:29Speaker 2: it's a real personal choice that we make. I think
- 7:33Speaker 2: the risk because that e m P. I think is
- 7:37Speaker 2: a risk of dealing with that kind of stuff because
- 7:40Speaker 2: of solar flares, because it's a naturally occurring thing that
- 7:43Speaker 2: can cause I mean, we have a fragile We have
- 7:46Speaker 2: a very fragile system as far as I'm concerned.
- 7:49Speaker 1: Is interconnected and everybody, Yeah.
- 7:51Speaker 2: Exactly, And it doesn't take a whole lot of ingenuity
- 7:55Speaker 2: from a bad guy or just mother nature to ruin
- 7:59Speaker 2: a whole bunch of that and at us essentially in
- 8:01Speaker 2: the dark ages, if we're totally dependent on that system,
- 8:05Speaker 2: even when it.
- 8:05Speaker 1: Comes to prepping food wise, there's just so long that
- 8:09Speaker 1: stuff is useful, right, twenty twenty five years matter?
- 8:12Speaker 2: Yeah, you got some stuff that you know, that's seven
- 8:15Speaker 2: or ten years. You've got some foods products out there
- 8:19Speaker 2: that are good for twenty five years, right, But yeah,
- 8:22Speaker 2: I mean there's in you know, my goal is different.
- 8:27Speaker 2: I have freezers and I have a generator to run
- 8:29Speaker 2: the freezers in case we lose power, So my house
- 8:31Speaker 2: can operate for a pretty good period of time without
- 8:35Speaker 2: the power grid. And that's what's important to me. That's
- 8:38Speaker 2: my everybody's got to kind of formulate their own plan
- 8:41Speaker 2: and whatever they're comfortable with.
- 8:45Speaker 1: Back with Jad Johnson of the Talent Training Group, let
- 8:49Speaker 1: me get to another quick question here that you and
- 8:51Speaker 1: I were just talking about in the break from tim
- 8:54Speaker 1: Vehicle cameras. They've heard you talk about this on Talent Outdoors,
- 8:57Speaker 1: but there's just so many choices on the market. Features.
- 9:00Speaker 1: Are there things that you're looking for in those kinds
- 9:02Speaker 1: of cameras.
- 9:04Speaker 2: I wanted one for the front end rear looking out
- 9:06Speaker 2: the back of my truck and the front of my truck,
- 9:09Speaker 2: and so it's.
- 9:09Speaker 1: Two different cameras or one that different camera.
- 9:11Speaker 2: Okay, you you know, I just ran the wires under
- 9:14Speaker 2: the trim and dressed everything up, made it look good.
- 9:17Speaker 2: Uh So it's not wires hanging everywhere and causing a hazard.
- 9:20Speaker 1: There is it? Is it sort of centered on the
- 9:22Speaker 1: vehicle like in front of your rear view mirror and
- 9:24Speaker 1: then centered in the back backwards precisely? Yes, Uh are
- 9:28Speaker 1: there are there features these cameras have that you want.
- 9:30Speaker 2: They have. Most of the ones that I've seen have
- 9:32Speaker 2: some night vision capability, so it's the low light's gonna
- 9:36Speaker 2: pick up pretty good, or with the light from the
- 9:38Speaker 2: tail lights and the headlights is going to pick up
- 9:40Speaker 2: really good.
- 9:41Speaker 1: Uh they have.
- 9:42Speaker 2: The one I have has a an SD card in
- 9:44Speaker 2: it with a loop system, so you're it's constantly running.
- 9:48Speaker 2: It overwrites the it overwrites the the little less D card, So.
- 9:53Speaker 1: If you have something happen, you pull the card out
- 9:55Speaker 1: and download that segment and then pop it back in
- 9:57Speaker 1: and off you go exactly. Okay. Uh So it's a
- 10:00Speaker 1: constant overright. It has a it's.
- 10:02Speaker 2: Hooked into the to the to a hot lead in
- 10:05Speaker 2: the car, so if you have motion, since in the car,
- 10:09Speaker 2: the car sens's motion, it'll automatically come on. Doesn't have
- 10:13Speaker 2: They have some that have interior camera capability of recording
- 10:17Speaker 2: outside of the car and inside the car with sound actually.
- 10:24Speaker 1: You know that, and they're not.
- 10:25Speaker 2: And they used to be really expensive and now they're not.
- 10:28Speaker 2: I think the one I have I got it on Amazon.
- 10:31Speaker 2: It was like one hundred bucks.
- 10:33Speaker 1: So it's like the way we've gotten with webcams that
- 10:36Speaker 1: you just buy and you plug into your desktop and
- 10:38Speaker 1: put it on your your screen. Exactly. Okay, I promise
- 10:41Speaker 1: we were going to talk about AMMO and magazines. Are
- 10:43Speaker 1: there any significant differences between range AMMO brands. No, not really.
- 10:51Speaker 2: I try to look for ammunition that's you know, there
- 10:57Speaker 2: all is all training AMMO is all going to be
- 10:59Speaker 2: about the same price.
- 11:01Speaker 1: It's it's a very global market. Everythin like a buck
- 11:04Speaker 1: or two of each other a box.
- 11:05Speaker 2: Right, yep, they're all gonna be you know, you're looking
- 11:07Speaker 2: for full metal jacket.
- 11:10Speaker 1: Doesn't matter whether it's brass or not. Yeah, yeah, absolutely.
- 11:14Speaker 2: I don't recommend steelcase AMMO in much of anything in
- 11:18Speaker 2: steel case AMMO is almost has almost become non existent
- 11:24Speaker 2: to a great degree because the majority of it was
- 11:26Speaker 2: manufactured in Russia, okay, and or China, and we don't
- 11:30Speaker 2: do gun business with Russia China anymore. That's been prohibited.
- 11:33Speaker 2: So there's there's been embargoes against them for political reasons,
- 11:37Speaker 2: and so you don't see.
- 11:38Speaker 1: A lot of it. How long can you leave ammunition
- 11:42Speaker 1: in a mag for example, you load up a bunch
- 11:45Speaker 1: of magazines, you've got them in your bag. How long
- 11:50Speaker 1: can they sit there without you needing to maybe pop
- 11:53Speaker 1: some rounds out to let the spring loosen? Does that
- 11:55Speaker 1: even matter?
- 11:56Speaker 2: H No, don't worry about that. Springs wear out when
- 12:00Speaker 2: they're compressed and released. Compressing a spring and leaving it
- 12:03Speaker 2: compressed is not going to wear it out as long
- 12:07Speaker 2: as quickly as using it, or you're compressing it and
- 12:11Speaker 2: releasing it.
- 12:12Speaker 1: That makes sense. So yeah, it's sort of like yours
- 12:14Speaker 1: store opener. You know, you're that spring that on a
- 12:17Speaker 1: on a multipiece griage store. If you just have your
- 12:20Speaker 1: door down or up, it's not in use, correct it.
- 12:24Speaker 2: Okay, it's so whether it's loaded or unloaded, it's not
- 12:27Speaker 2: getting a lot of use when you using it.
- 12:29Speaker 1: It's going to wear it out faster than anything. Uh.
- 12:32Speaker 2: It really is going to depend on what kind of
- 12:34Speaker 2: temperatures and humidity you're exposing your AMMO to on a
- 12:37Speaker 2: daily basis.
- 12:39Speaker 1: What about the usefulness of those rounds?
- 12:42Speaker 2: You know you you don't see most if you're talking
- 12:45Speaker 2: about self defense AMMO.
- 12:46Speaker 1: Nope, I'm talking about that range AMMO first, and then
- 12:49Speaker 1: we'll get to the self defense.
- 12:50Speaker 2: So the round it's not going to change things. What
- 12:54Speaker 2: changes the velocity I get. I think it's what you're
- 12:58Speaker 2: talking about on the AMMO. If you have a city
- 13:00Speaker 2: lost or whatever, or does the round just go bad?
- 13:02Speaker 1: No, okay, it won't just go bad.
- 13:04Speaker 2: It will go bad if you expose it to temperature extremes,
- 13:09Speaker 2: get really hot, really cold, back.
- 13:11Speaker 1: To find really hot and cold, like the trunk of
- 13:13Speaker 1: the car, or in the garage and your attic in
- 13:17Speaker 1: the attic of the house. But if it's in the
- 13:19Speaker 1: main part of the garage, let's say you got to
- 13:20Speaker 1: safe in there or something like.
- 13:22Speaker 2: That, they're not getting drastic temperature swings and you're not
- 13:25Speaker 2: getting high humidity.
- 13:26Speaker 1: Okay.
- 13:27Speaker 2: Humidity is the biggest enemy of guns and ammunition. Okay,
- 13:31Speaker 2: And we live in a very humid environment, especially in
- 13:34Speaker 2: the garage. Your garage is not climate control like your house.
- 13:37Speaker 2: Your house, the humidity in your house is going to
- 13:40Speaker 2: stay fairly controlled.
- 13:42Speaker 1: Okay.
- 13:43Speaker 2: That's one of the ways we control heat and cold
- 13:45Speaker 2: in the house is by taking a lot of the
- 13:47Speaker 2: humidity out. That's what your air conditioner does in the house.
- 13:50Speaker 2: That's why we have a drain on your that runs
- 13:52Speaker 2: out of the house, is pulling water out of there.
- 13:55Speaker 2: Garage is a little bit different because it is most
- 13:58Speaker 2: most garages are not climate control. There's a garage door
- 14:02Speaker 2: there that's not well insulated. Now it's still going to
- 14:04Speaker 2: be warmer or cooler than the outside, but it's not
- 14:07Speaker 2: gonna be as good as inside the house.
- 14:09Speaker 1: All Right, Jad Johnson with me of the Talent Training Group,
- 14:12Speaker 1: and we're taking your questions. This final question will take
- 14:14Speaker 1: from you today. This comes from uh from stew in Georgia.
- 14:19Speaker 1: He said, do muzzle breaks reduce recoil on handguns? Yes?
- 14:25Speaker 1: He asked secondarily, do they increase noise level? Yes? You
- 14:30Speaker 1: laughed when I read the question to you the first time.
- 14:32Speaker 1: All Right, For people listening that do not know what
- 14:35Speaker 1: he's talking about, what is a muzzle break?
- 14:39Speaker 2: Breaks are essentially when you in the last little bit
- 14:42Speaker 2: of length of the barrel, so the last the business
- 14:46Speaker 2: end the muzzle, so you come just inside the muzzle
- 14:48Speaker 2: or you stop short of the muzzle, and it's either
- 14:51Speaker 2: slots or holes drilled in slots cut in or holes
- 14:55Speaker 2: drilled into the end of the barrel on a rifle, shotgun,
- 14:58Speaker 2: or pistol one side or another, usually on the top,
- 15:03Speaker 2: because what what happens when you fire a gun, a
- 15:05Speaker 2: handgun or a rifle, the gun tries to.
- 15:09Speaker 1: The muzzle rises, you have muzzle rise. That's what recoil.
- 15:12Speaker 1: Recoil is.
- 15:14Speaker 2: So what they're what they'll do is they'll cut this
- 15:16Speaker 2: slot in there and it's like a jet engine port basically,
- 15:19Speaker 2: so you're you're directing the energy or the burning gas.
- 15:24Speaker 2: You're directing that upwards instead of out the front, so
- 15:28Speaker 2: you're directing it upwards at least some of it upwards,
- 15:31Speaker 2: some of it upwards or out to the sides. A
- 15:35Speaker 2: lot of times on rifles you'll have these. If you
- 15:37Speaker 2: see the big Abrams tank, they've got this device on
- 15:40Speaker 2: the end of the barrel. Sometimes it has looks like
- 15:42Speaker 2: they call it a break.
- 15:43Speaker 1: It's just and.
- 15:44Speaker 2: It's directing the the gases up to the top or
- 15:47Speaker 2: out to the sides to cut down on on recoil.
- 15:52Speaker 2: When you do that, they are effective. They do work.
- 15:57Speaker 2: The more horsepower if you will that the cartridge itself has,
- 16:01Speaker 2: the better the break works. Uh so on a nine
- 16:04Speaker 2: millimeter defensive pistol, I don't recommend them one because you're
- 16:09Speaker 2: also pushing muzzle flash, burning gas, and low light situations,
- 16:13Speaker 2: you're generally going to be pushing that hot gas up
- 16:17Speaker 2: in front of your front sight. So in a low
- 16:19Speaker 2: light situation, you're going to be taking away some of
- 16:21Speaker 2: your night vision from it, and it's not so effective
- 16:25Speaker 2: in a self defense situation. That's something that you've got
- 16:28Speaker 2: to have. It also greatly increases the noise. You know,
- 16:32Speaker 2: it's back towards the shooter, so you're you're increasing the
- 16:39Speaker 2: because you're giving that gas more places to escape, it's
- 16:43Speaker 2: going to increase the boom, the pop.
- 16:46Speaker 1: The point of it though, is to help reduce recoil.
- 16:50Speaker 2: Yes, that is the reason for their existence big on
- 16:54Speaker 2: big high caliber rifles, some of them. If you have
- 16:57Speaker 2: a really lightweight rifle that with a high horsepower cartridge,
- 17:05Speaker 2: it's almost a necessity to keep it being to make
- 17:07Speaker 2: the gun comfortable enough to shoot.
- 17:11Speaker 1: But you are increasing noise the way you.
- 17:14Speaker 2: Suppressors also reduce noise and act sort of the same
- 17:18Speaker 2: way as far as reducing some recoil. You can get
- 17:21Speaker 2: some recoil reduction from a suppressor without the noise, but
- 17:26Speaker 2: express suppressors are expensive and right now they're highly regulated
- 17:29Speaker 2: by the federal government. We hope that that goes away.
- 17:32Speaker 1: It doesn't.
- 17:32Speaker 2: Suppressors don't keep guns from sounding like guns. They keep
- 17:36Speaker 2: gun shot from damage in your hearing ins.
- 17:39Speaker 1: Well, I was going to get to that. Since you
- 17:41Speaker 1: brought it up, doctors are now coming out the ones
- 17:45Speaker 1: that aren't crazy and recommending removing all restrictions on suppressors
- 17:51Speaker 1: to make them as readily available as buying a handgun
- 17:55Speaker 1: or a long gun. And that for that very reason.
- 17:59Speaker 1: Hearing protection.
- 18:00Speaker 2: Yeah, I don't shoot guns around my kids, even with
- 18:05Speaker 2: my kids wearing hearing protection. I don't shoot guns around
- 18:08Speaker 2: my kids that are not suppressed because I don't want
- 18:10Speaker 2: them to end up like me. And that was in
- 18:12Speaker 2: my early twenties, having significant hearing loss from shooting. I've
- 18:17Speaker 2: been an avid shooter since I was a little boy,
- 18:19Speaker 2: been hunting since I was a little boy, and thousands
- 18:23Speaker 2: of shotgun shells, and by the time I was in
- 18:24Speaker 2: my early twenties, I already had significant hearing loss because
- 18:27Speaker 2: it's hearing. Hearing damage is a compounding thing. Yeah, and
- 18:31Speaker 2: you don't get it back and you don't get it back.
- 18:33Speaker 2: And I'm you know, been wearing hearing aids since I
- 18:35Speaker 2: was thirty, and they're not fun. They you know, it's
- 18:39Speaker 2: just it's they're aggravating. Sure, So I'm a big proponent
- 18:44Speaker 2: of suppressors as far as protecting protecting the hearing.
- 18:49Speaker 1: JD. Johnson with me final segment here, and we're going
- 18:52Speaker 1: to keep that train of thought talking about hearing protection
- 18:56Speaker 1: and so forth. Now, I will admit I have one
- 18:59Speaker 1: of those compensation the barrels on a sig P three
- 19:01Speaker 1: sixty five. I've got the compensated barrel and so I'll
- 19:07Speaker 1: just be more careful to make sure that I have
- 19:10Speaker 1: the proper hearing protection. Yeah, but let's talk about hearing
- 19:13Speaker 1: protection here for a second, the technology of today versus
- 19:17Speaker 1: old school. Because you there are cans right now that
- 19:22Speaker 1: you can put on that have a setting on them
- 19:26Speaker 1: that allows you to hear people around you with the
- 19:27Speaker 1: cans on and somehow reacts and shuts down to protect
- 19:32Speaker 1: your hearing. Is that effective? Yes? They are. I've been
- 19:36Speaker 1: using them.
- 19:36Speaker 2: Work the same way, believe it or not, the same
- 19:39Speaker 2: way a lot of hearing aids work. They have a
- 19:42Speaker 2: essentially a decibel meter. The smarter the hearing devices are
- 19:45Speaker 2: smart enough to register a decibel level when it reaches
- 19:50Speaker 2: that level. It just has a micro switch that reacts
- 19:53Speaker 2: within microseconds and it shuts off those microphones and then
- 19:57Speaker 2: you they it.
- 19:58Speaker 1: Can hear the a sound level before you can and
- 20:03Speaker 1: shut it down before it causes any issues. Flis, that's crazy. Now,
- 20:08Speaker 1: what about the in ear In other words, cans versus plugs.
- 20:12Speaker 2: Plugs plugs are somewhat effective. We hear through our ear
- 20:18Speaker 2: drum that's down in the ear canal soft tissue. We
- 20:21Speaker 2: also hear through the vibration of the three bones that
- 20:25Speaker 2: are in We have three little bones in our ears,
- 20:27Speaker 2: and anvile and a stirrup and a hammer them. I
- 20:30Speaker 2: think I think that's the three bones there.
- 20:32Speaker 1: They're taking much less of you for not knowing, sir,
- 20:35Speaker 1: but go right ahead.
- 20:37Speaker 2: So we also hear through vibration. That's how the you
- 20:40Speaker 2: have a phone. These ear plugs that they have. You
- 20:45Speaker 2: see guys wearing these things that have the little yea
- 20:47Speaker 2: they on the ear. Yeah, they're picking up the vibration.
- 20:50Speaker 2: Those those devices are picking up the vibration of the
- 20:52Speaker 2: bones in your inner ear. Okay, so ear plugs don't
- 20:57Speaker 2: protect those bones. So with kids, especially with kids, you
- 21:01Speaker 2: need over the ear ear protection that's protecting those bones
- 21:05Speaker 2: from corlibration of the over pressure or the noise that
- 21:08Speaker 2: happens when you fire a gun. Now, can you damage
- 21:12Speaker 2: your hearing though, Yes, through the bones, Yes you can.
- 21:16Speaker 1: Yes, Ben with big, big.
- 21:18Speaker 2: Caliber stuff can absolutely damage that your hearing. There's nerves
- 21:22Speaker 2: attached to this thing. So what what happens with hearing loss,
- 21:25Speaker 2: with the hearing losses is nerve damage.
- 21:28Speaker 1: At least describe a big caliber.
- 21:31Speaker 2: I would say if five five six is one of
- 21:32Speaker 2: the loud of ar fifteen is one of the loudest
- 21:35Speaker 2: guns on the market to.
- 21:36Speaker 1: Me, so unsuppressed five two two three, that is high caliber.
- 21:41Speaker 1: What about handguns? Yeah? Are there differences? There are? There are?
- 21:44Speaker 1: There are differences setting aside of twenty two, some of
- 21:47Speaker 1: the some of the different twenty two can hurt your ears, understood,
- 21:50Speaker 1: But it's nothing, nothing like the other calibers.
- 21:52Speaker 2: No, it's not there. The problem with handguns is the
- 21:56Speaker 2: proximity close to arms length, you know, that's how far
- 22:01Speaker 2: away the noise is. So obviously the further you are
- 22:04Speaker 2: away from the noise, the less decibels you're going to
- 22:06Speaker 2: be exposing yourself to. Rifles tend to have longer barrels
- 22:10Speaker 2: and they're further away, but handguns can do just as
- 22:12Speaker 2: much damage because of the proximity to your face and
- 22:15Speaker 2: your ears.
- 22:17Speaker 1: In a perfect world, do you put what about the
- 22:19Speaker 1: plugs that are technology oriented, that are electric, They're going
- 22:23Speaker 1: to be just as good.
- 22:25Speaker 2: I would say is probably like the foam the foam
- 22:27Speaker 2: style earplug, some of the little pham, cheap throwaway disposable
- 22:31Speaker 2: ones do a really good job of taking the decibel
- 22:35Speaker 2: exposure away from your ear drum.
- 22:37Speaker 1: I was going to say, if you combine those foam
- 22:40Speaker 1: plugs with cans, you probably have a pretty good situation.
- 22:43Speaker 2: That's the best of both worlds right there. Okay, protect
- 22:47Speaker 2: your hearing, protect your hearing. Don't get it back. You
- 22:50Speaker 2: can't get it back. And then you say hunt to
- 22:53Speaker 2: your wife a lot, you know, Yeah, she gets aggravated. Yeah, huh.
- 23:00Speaker 2: My kids, My kids have such a such a fun
- 23:03Speaker 2: time torment in me with I'm.
- 23:06Speaker 1: Sure they do. Thank you, sir, sir, thank you
