- 0:42Speaker 2: Henderson and Seth Morris and not I will point out
- 0:45Speaker 2: by the man who's supposed to be here. I'm glad
- 0:49Speaker 2: he's not because I like Seth betteran doctor Randall, now.
- 0:54Speaker 3: That you're a doctor too, what dud Well, we've actually
- 1:01Speaker 3: got Randall on the line. Shall we talked to him?
- 1:03Speaker 2: I don't say that because that's not a thing.
- 1:05Speaker 4: That's not a thing yet, no thing.
- 1:07Speaker 2: Today's show, we're gonna check out with our friend and
- 1:09Speaker 2: newly added Meat Eater colleague, Heather du Ville to see
- 1:11Speaker 2: what sort of critter hides and first she's working on
- 1:14Speaker 2: I'm gonna take a trip down memory lane do some
- 1:16Speaker 2: throwback Thursday, and we're gonna talk about some very exciting
- 1:19Speaker 2: news that a lot of people might not recognize as exciting.
- 1:22Speaker 2: But we're gonna explain why it's so exciting. Is a
- 1:24Speaker 2: grailing an Arctic grailing reintroduction in Michigan?
- 1:30Speaker 4: Pretty cool?
- 1:30Speaker 2: No, it's super cool, man, it's super cool. We're gonna
- 1:34Speaker 2: get into that first. We're gonna try to hear what
- 1:37Speaker 2: why Randall couldn't make it. I called him earlier. He
- 1:40Speaker 2: had no problem answering the phone. He's supposedly stuck in
- 1:43Speaker 2: the snow, but here he is. It doesn't look snowy
- 1:45Speaker 2: where you're at, Steve.
- 1:47Speaker 5: I'll point out to you that I'm in my garage.
- 1:49Speaker 5: Uh huh.
- 1:50Speaker 6: And there's there's a fair bit of snow in the
- 1:52Speaker 6: garage this morning.
- 1:55Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:56Speaker 6: I was told we got up to eighty seven on
- 1:58Speaker 6: our wins last night in Livingston.
- 2:00Speaker 2: Here home. Every time you talk, I'm gonna make the
- 2:02Speaker 2: noise that I hear when I heard it. Someone can't
- 2:05Speaker 2: make it to work because of the snow riding every
- 2:06Speaker 2: time you talk, I'll do it.
- 2:09Speaker 6: Go ahead, Uh, I we got some good drifts here,
- 2:15Speaker 6: We got some I Uh.
- 2:20Speaker 5: Why did I call that? Call it because you done?
- 2:25Speaker 2: I think because you didn't come to work, because you're chicken,
- 2:28Speaker 2: because you got snow. Let me see.
- 2:31Speaker 6: Well, it's blown away from everywhere else except for uh the.
- 2:38Speaker 2: Driveway in the road. Let's see.
- 2:41Speaker 6: So we got some good drifts here. This it's right
- 2:44Speaker 6: in front of the garage.
- 2:45Speaker 5: Oh wow, look at that dang and uh yeah, that's
- 2:50Speaker 5: that's what happens. Here's Uh looks like your truck is out.
- 2:54Speaker 2: Well, truck looks fine, and it looks like it's on
- 2:57Speaker 2: the other side of the drift.
- 2:59Speaker 5: The issue. I'll just go through this drift here.
- 3:03Speaker 6: There's a massive drift here. I don't know if you
- 3:07Speaker 6: can see the bend in the road out this way,
- 3:11Speaker 6: and I got the canam stuck try to plow that out.
- 3:14Speaker 6: So I had to get my truck out to pull
- 3:16Speaker 6: the canam out. And uh yeah, there's an excavator on
- 3:20Speaker 6: the way, but it's got to take its way out here.
- 3:22Speaker 5: So I'll just be here.
- 3:25Speaker 2: If you guys eat me, you know, Uh, can you
- 3:28Speaker 2: one thing.
- 3:31Speaker 5: I was I was trying to remember. I had to
- 3:33Speaker 5: do one thing on here. Oh happy for.
- 3:41Speaker 2: Your phil Can you do randall favor and save that
- 3:48Speaker 2: clip because when we caught him loose, when we fire him,
- 3:53Speaker 2: yeah for not coming to work. He can maybe use
- 3:57Speaker 2: that and try to get one of those jobs where
- 4:00Speaker 2: you talk about how bad the weather is and you're
- 4:02Speaker 2: like the weather guy, Oh, that's really kind of you
- 4:04Speaker 2: to think of him after that, Like you there's a
- 4:06Speaker 2: big snowstorm in Buffalo, New York, and then they send
- 4:09Speaker 2: a guy out there to Parka and he's like, look
- 4:11Speaker 2: at all the snow on these cars. Randon would be
- 4:13Speaker 2: good at that. The wind's picking up. Yeah, it'd be
- 4:16Speaker 2: a great job for Randall. Got some business talk about
- 4:20Speaker 2: for you. For those of you, I know that those
- 4:22Speaker 2: of you in Michigan are already excited as hell about
- 4:24Speaker 2: the grailing reintroduction that's coming that we're going to talk about.
- 4:27Speaker 2: But if you're in Nashville, you might be saying to yourself,
- 4:30Speaker 2: what could I be at? What what should I be
- 4:32Speaker 2: excited about? Well, i'll tell you. If you're in and
- 4:36Speaker 2: around Nashville and or attending the National Wild Turkey Federation Convention,
- 4:42Speaker 2: I'm reading this and and that's that's not that's not
- 4:46Speaker 2: a great way of putting it, because it shouldn't say
- 4:50Speaker 2: and or because.
- 4:53Speaker 5: You follow me, Yeah, I got you.
- 4:55Speaker 2: Oh no, because they could be far away right now.
- 5:00Speaker 2: So you say in Nashville and they're like, well, I'm
- 5:02Speaker 2: far away from Nashville. But then you say or attending
- 5:05Speaker 2: the NWTF convention in Nashville, they might be like, oh,
- 5:08Speaker 2: I better pay attention because I'll be in Nashville on Saturday.
- 5:12Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 5:12Speaker 2: So yeah, if you're around Nashville and or attending the
- 5:16Speaker 2: NWTF convention in sports show this week, that's a hell
- 5:19Speaker 2: I like that show. It's a hell of a good time.
- 5:21Speaker 2: Our colleagues, Yannie Yannie, the Lavian Lover, Ocal, Clay Newcombe,
- 5:30Speaker 2: Spencer Newheart are all there and they're hosting the Grand
- 5:33Speaker 2: Slam after party in the Tennessee Ballroom tomorrow night, Valentine's
- 5:38Speaker 2: Day Night. The event starts at eight forty five pm. Okay,
- 5:42Speaker 2: this is for NWTF. Get your tickets for forty bucks.
- 5:48Speaker 2: Buying a ticket enters you to win one of six
- 5:52Speaker 2: dream Turkey hunts. They're also gonna be raffling off a
- 5:55Speaker 2: boatload of guns and a bunch of new turkey gear
- 5:59Speaker 2: from First f HF and Phelps Game Calls. Plus Spencer's
- 6:04Speaker 2: gonna be hosting a meat poll style trivia. How meat
- 6:08Speaker 2: Pole works is you survey everybody that comes in the
- 6:12Speaker 2: room and then you do a trivia show around you
- 6:16Speaker 2: do basically being asked trivia questions about the people in
- 6:19Speaker 2: the room, percentages, what percent of the people in the
- 6:22Speaker 2: room tonight?
- 6:23Speaker 5: Blank?
- 6:24Speaker 4: Right, You got to figure out what they're.
- 6:25Speaker 2: Thinking sitting down. I don't know whatever the hell Spencer
- 6:29Speaker 2: wants to ask them, and you can win stuff that way.
- 6:35Speaker 5: That'll be fun.
- 6:36Speaker 2: No, I'd go if I was there, Uh, where we're
- 6:39Speaker 2: sitting right now? Oh so we did Randall, my former colleague,
- 6:42Speaker 2: doctor Randall. Oh, Spencer chimed and he says, I'm on
- 6:46Speaker 2: a plane headed there now. Okay, huh, that's great to hear.
- 6:52Speaker 5: Safe travels.
- 6:54Speaker 2: Doctor, my former colleague, doctor Randall, and I did, uh
- 6:59Speaker 2: did our first of our little mini to our mountain
- 7:01Speaker 2: Man Mini tour where we're going to colleges to give
- 7:04Speaker 2: We're going to colleges to talk about the mountain Man era.
- 7:07Speaker 2: We did our first one the other night, which is
- 7:08Speaker 2: very fun. We did it at Montana State University. We're
- 7:11Speaker 2: going to University of Montana on February twenty and we're
- 7:16Speaker 2: going to University of Wyoming and layer Me, Wyoming on
- 7:20Speaker 2: February twenty six. So go check those things out, like
- 7:24Speaker 2: they're supposedly sold out. But I gotta figure that. I
- 7:29Speaker 2: mean they are, but I feel like there should be
- 7:31Speaker 2: more room there. Oh, I'm supposed to look at the TV.
- 7:35Speaker 2: Mike Cue says, look at TV. Hey, Happy birthday, Steve
- 7:44Speaker 2: Ranella Man. We respect the heck out of you. Hope
- 7:48Speaker 2: you have a great birthday. I have not forgot that
- 7:50Speaker 2: you don't know how to blow a crow call, though, if.
- 7:52Speaker 1: You just put a little more a little body coming
- 7:55Speaker 1: from the chest right here.
- 8:00Speaker 2: Out way better than that blue jay call you make.
- 8:02Speaker 2: Happy birthday.
- 8:05Speaker 5: Oh, hey Steve, happy birthday.
- 8:09Speaker 2: This is a kind of awkward.
- 8:17Speaker 7: Sicko wo yugy.

- 9:00Speaker 5: So here's to another fifty years.
- 9:04Speaker 8: Hey Steve, happy birthday from Minnesota. It has been just

- 9:42Speaker 1: for your birthday radio live episode, you could do a
- 9:46Speaker 1: hot tip for everybody on how to keep your head
- 9:50Speaker 1: warm in these super cold conditions, especially when your hair
- 9:54Speaker 1: is getting so thin. On top of like if you
- 9:56Speaker 1: have to wear two hats or maybe put a and
- 10:00Speaker 1: whom we're up there.
- 10:01Speaker 5: I don't know.
- 10:01Speaker 1: Exactly what you do. You can go ahead and say it,
- 10:05Speaker 1: what a dick, But that's what friends are for. On
- 10:09Speaker 1: your birthday. You got so many friends wish you have birthday.
- 10:14Speaker 1: I heard Cory Culkins had to give him all a

- 10:52Speaker 2: good one.
- 10:55Speaker 9: Hey, buddy, it's Decoy Dave over here in Oregon trying
- 10:59Speaker 9: to get over COVID.
- 11:01Speaker 10: I just wanted to say happy birthday.
- 11:04Speaker 1: From me and from all of us at DSD, and
- 11:08Speaker 1: thanks for all your hard work and inspiration and creating
- 11:10Speaker 1: all this.
- 11:11Speaker 5: And hope that you and your family have a great one.
- 11:15Speaker 2: Every birthday, Steve.
- 11:16Speaker 6: For me in old way, I remember when I was
- 11:19Speaker 6: fifty one.
- 11:22Speaker 2: I think, all right, thank you everybody.
- 11:28Speaker 4: Happy birthday.
- 11:29Speaker 5: Happy birthday, Steve.
- 11:31Speaker 2: What Dirt didn't bring up? Oh look at this there.
- 11:34Speaker 5: You go, right, that's so cute.
- 11:37Speaker 2: What Dirt didn't bring up with his messages. Me and
- 11:39Speaker 2: him struck a deal where I gave him a brand
- 11:41Speaker 2: new climbing rope and he was supposed to give me
- 11:44Speaker 2: a little picture frame thing. Nothing haven't seen.
- 11:47Speaker 5: It hasn't happened yet.
- 11:48Speaker 2: No very asymmetrical deal anyways, and I got screwed on it.
- 11:52Speaker 5: Yeah, okay, that was the trim piece in your camper, right, Yeah?
- 11:55Speaker 2: Yeah, I didn't want to confuse everybody took me to
- 11:57Speaker 2: it would take me too long to explain. It's actually
- 11:59Speaker 2: trim piece for my camp.
- 12:00Speaker 5: But it's gonna look like a picture frame it is.
- 12:01Speaker 2: And because I ripped out the microwave of my camper,
- 12:04Speaker 2: because any telling you want to microwave something in my camper,
- 12:08Speaker 2: you gotta go turn the generator on. So if you're like, oh,
- 12:11Speaker 2: I'm gonna heat this cup of coffee up, go outside,
- 12:15Speaker 2: turn the generator on, come back in. By that point,
- 12:17Speaker 2: I just heat it up on the burner. Yeah, you
- 12:19Speaker 2: know it make any sense? So I ripped it out,
- 12:21Speaker 2: and we keep loads of bread up in there. But
- 12:23Speaker 2: I just don't like the way it looks now. It
- 12:24Speaker 2: looks like something used to be there. So dirt supposed
- 12:28Speaker 2: to be finding a way where it looks like God
- 12:30Speaker 2: put it there that way, like it grew there.
- 12:31Speaker 5: You know.
- 12:33Speaker 2: All right, we're gonna go to Heather du Ville. Heather,
- 12:34Speaker 2: you know what? Can Heather see us?
- 12:36Speaker 5: Good? Not yet?
- 12:37Speaker 3: But I prepare to drop for this, Steve, because I
- 12:39Speaker 3: was told to prepare a drop.
- 12:40Speaker 2: Oh okay, so do you do you want to read
- 12:43Speaker 2: what the script says? There's no script here?
- 12:49Speaker 11: Number three, buddy, Oh, I'm looking at it.
- 12:55Speaker 2: Ready. Yeah, go ahead. Next up, we're going to check
- 12:58Speaker 2: in with Heather Duville for new segment. We're calling Fur
- 13:01Speaker 2: and Leather with Heather.
- 13:23Speaker 4: Phil that's your best one yet.
- 13:25Speaker 2: That was the best one ever. Man. You know what
- 13:27Speaker 2: he did is he cut right to the good part
- 13:28Speaker 2: of the song.
- 13:29Speaker 5: That's great.
- 13:30Speaker 2: Glad you that. Here's how I'm going to intro the segment.
- 13:33Speaker 7: Watch that one a total surprise. I did not know
- 13:36Speaker 7: about the song. Laughing, but yes, that caught my eye
- 13:43Speaker 7: sitting on your table.
- 13:44Speaker 2: Bill, Can I verify that what people can see? No, no,
- 13:48Speaker 2: make it narrow again, because you're blowing the whole fount
- 13:49Speaker 2: I'm sorry to hear. Yeah, make it really narrow. I
- 13:52Speaker 2: mean that's a narrow So is that way it looks
- 13:54Speaker 2: for people at home? Does it look that narrow?
- 13:57Speaker 5: Yes?
- 13:58Speaker 2: Okay, I'll check this out. Watch how long it takes
- 14:03Speaker 2: for this to pass.
- 14:05Speaker 11: All the way all the way through? Wen, we've only
- 14:10Speaker 11: got an hour for this podcast.
- 14:12Speaker 2: I mean, watch how long this takes?
- 14:18Speaker 7: Oh, it's going over to the other you watch.
- 14:25Speaker 2: Can you believe us when we had those ladies on
- 14:28Speaker 2: that were mauled by a river otter?
- 14:30Speaker 5: Wow, look at.
- 14:31Speaker 2: This and people are like, well, how could a river
- 14:32Speaker 2: otter kick your ass? Oh? The angle's bad. Oh here,
- 14:35Speaker 2: let's do it again. Where the angles better? How could
- 14:38Speaker 2: a river malia that's five feet ten inches tall.
- 14:43Speaker 7: Wow, that's a big one.
- 14:49Speaker 2: And that I think I might just keep it as
- 14:51Speaker 2: a wall hanger. I was gonna do a hat, but
- 14:53Speaker 2: I don't know. But what the point being that's river otter,
- 14:56Speaker 2: and and Heather's dealing with sea otters, and that's river.
- 14:58Speaker 2: Out of that weays twenty five and half pounds. What's
- 15:01Speaker 2: a big sea otter? Heather?
- 15:04Speaker 7: I got my biggest sea otter this winter and it
- 15:08Speaker 7: weighed ninety pounds.
- 15:12Speaker 2: Imagine that thing. Yeah, oh that's crazy, Heather? Had I
- 15:18Speaker 2: think I posted it? Did I think I posted it?
- 15:20Speaker 7: Yeah?
- 15:21Speaker 2: Heather had? She went out hunting it. Oh, sorry, go ahead.
- 15:24Speaker 7: Oh it's bigger than my deer that I got.
- 15:27Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 15:29Speaker 2: She had a box in an otter laying in the
- 15:30Speaker 2: bottom boat and the odd looked bigger than the bock
- 15:32Speaker 2: laying in the bottom of the boat.
- 15:35Speaker 5: That's crazy, all right.
- 15:37Speaker 2: So how's how's winter going, Heather? What's going on?
- 15:40Speaker 7: It's going? Well? You know, we a lot of people
- 15:43Speaker 7: celebrate New Year, you know, January first, but our new
- 15:46Speaker 7: year is coming up with the resurgence of life in springtime.
- 15:50Speaker 7: So I spent a lot of time in the winter
- 15:52Speaker 7: here just in my shop, and it's like the rest
- 15:56Speaker 7: of the environment hibernating, resting, and then as things awaken
- 16:04Speaker 7: in the spring, we come to life and start our
- 16:06Speaker 7: harvest season, and that kind of marks our new year.
- 16:09Speaker 2: And yeah, is that is the new year? Is the
- 16:14Speaker 2: new year a day? Or is it the new year?
- 16:17Speaker 2: Just sort of like regarded as a window of time,
- 16:20Speaker 2: like a like a broader window of.
- 16:21Speaker 7: Time, seasonal you know, awakening, come out of hibernation, new plants.
- 16:28Speaker 5: God.
- 16:29Speaker 2: So there's not like a specific day when you announce.
- 16:31Speaker 7: It, No, but sometime always feels like the new year
- 16:35Speaker 7: for us. Sure, I've been working on I've been learning
- 16:40Speaker 7: how to tan deer skins with tree bark, and I
- 16:46Speaker 7: have a I tan my first seal skin at home.
- 16:50Speaker 7: So it's here stretched on a frame.
- 16:53Speaker 2: Can you grab that and let us see the other side.
- 16:56Speaker 7: Yeah, So see, this is the seal skin that was
- 17:01Speaker 7: hanging in the drying shed when you were here and
- 17:06Speaker 7: I tanned it. It's pretty big, actually, this spring is huge,
- 17:11Speaker 7: I think tall. But this is a harbor seal. Oh
- 17:15Speaker 7: you can't see the the whole thing, but you can
- 17:19Speaker 7: see the back of it.
- 17:23Speaker 2: This spring, Well that turned out nice.
- 17:25Speaker 7: Yeah, this is not done, but you can see where
- 17:29Speaker 7: I've dry scraped it and where I haven't. So as
- 17:33Speaker 7: you it'll light en up in color and it'll soften up.
- 17:37Speaker 7: So takes a lot of elbow grease. So working on that.
- 17:42Speaker 2: So what what? So as you're learning to do your
- 17:44Speaker 2: own seals, I remember you telling me that. I remember
- 17:48Speaker 2: you saying that it's hard to find. There's not a
- 17:52Speaker 2: lot of good places to send seals. Yeah, you haven't
- 17:56Speaker 2: been satisfied with with sending them in to get them tanned.
- 18:00Speaker 7: Yeah, seals are really oily. You have to wash them
- 18:04Speaker 7: right away after you skin them or else the oils
- 18:08Speaker 7: will oxidize on the fur and turn the fur yellow. Okay,
- 18:12Speaker 7: they're really rubbery, so they'll stretch like ten times their
- 18:17Speaker 7: original size, and I think they're hard to thin. It's
- 18:20Speaker 7: just a really unique art when it comes to tanning them,
- 18:24Speaker 7: and I really I haven't found a tannery that tans
- 18:28Speaker 7: them in a way that I guess produces an end
- 18:32Speaker 7: product that can be sewn with. So I decided to
- 18:36Speaker 7: try it myself, and yeah, just learning as I go.
- 18:41Speaker 2: So at with with coastal fur, coastal fur and leather
- 18:45Speaker 2: sewing shop. Will you eventually do you think you'll get
- 18:49Speaker 2: where you are able to have enough volume that you're
- 18:52Speaker 2: selling products made from the seals you harvest and tan
- 18:57Speaker 2: and so where like the whole process becomes in house
- 19:00Speaker 2: or do you think that'll be too hard to ever
- 19:02Speaker 2: have that level of volume.
- 19:04Speaker 7: I think with sea otters, no, but with seals we
- 19:09Speaker 7: so sea otters the usable parts are the fur, but
- 19:13Speaker 7: with seals, we eat the meat, we render the fat,
- 19:16Speaker 7: and we use as much of the seal is possible.
- 19:21Speaker 7: So we only harvest like two a year.
- 19:23Speaker 2: So our seals.
- 19:25Speaker 7: We can definitely you know, tan them here and convert
- 19:30Speaker 7: them into sellable items. We're not able to sell whole pelts.
- 19:34Speaker 7: The Marine Mammal Protection Act requires us to convert them
- 19:38Speaker 7: to a sellable item, so hat, scarves and things like
- 19:42Speaker 7: that in order to try to recoup costs. So definitely
- 19:46Speaker 7: feasible with seals, but not seat because we hunt those
- 19:48Speaker 7: in greater volume.
- 19:50Speaker 2: Now walk me through what's going on with learning how
- 19:53Speaker 2: to bark tans.
- 19:57Speaker 7: I brought my two toats here. I'm gonna grab a
- 20:01Speaker 7: chew and show you. So I have in here. This
- 20:08Speaker 7: is white tail, it's buckskin. I didn't know that buckskin
- 20:14Speaker 7: just means like hair off. I thought it meant like
- 20:16Speaker 7: a buck deer, like a like a deer. But buckskin
- 20:20Speaker 7: means the hair is off. I didn't know that. So
- 20:23Speaker 7: this is white tail hide. And this is like a
- 20:28Speaker 7: tree bark tea. I'll show you it's see all the
- 20:31Speaker 7: bark in there. So this is called the drench, and
- 20:36Speaker 7: this is the tanning agent. So tree bark. Some trees
- 20:42Speaker 7: have a lot of tannins in them.
- 20:43Speaker 2: Yeah, what trees are you using? Are you using hemlock?
- 20:47Speaker 7: This is actually oak. But the local trees here that
- 20:52Speaker 7: have a lot of tannins are older and spruce and hemlock.
- 20:57Speaker 7: And this drench is an oat brand. So what we
- 21:00Speaker 7: did was we soaked this in wme to dep air,
- 21:06Speaker 7: which is you know, real high pH, and then we
- 21:10Speaker 7: put it in this drench which lowers the pH back
- 21:14Speaker 7: down in preparation to put it into the tanning solution.
- 21:18Speaker 7: So I'm really excited to learn this process. It's all
- 21:24Speaker 7: natural and non toxic. So all of these products, when
- 21:30Speaker 7: I'm done with it can be composted or you know,
- 21:33Speaker 7: put back the earth and not cause harm. And yeah,
- 21:36Speaker 7: I hope to learn this and be able to teach
- 21:40Speaker 7: this soon.
- 21:40Speaker 2: So when you come down to head I know you're
- 21:42Speaker 2: working on this plant. We're you're going to come down
- 21:44Speaker 2: to headquarters. You're going to help people tan their deer
- 21:46Speaker 2: skins that people save up. So will we be able
- 21:49Speaker 2: to do like if we get all set up in
- 21:52Speaker 2: our kitchen area, how many can we run through? Do
- 21:55Speaker 2: you think?
- 21:57Speaker 7: Yeah? So we can. We can make these solutions to
- 22:01Speaker 7: tan you know, one one hide or hundreds of hides
- 22:05Speaker 7: and just adjust the different measurements. But one of my
- 22:09Speaker 7: goals is, you know, we try to use as much
- 22:11Speaker 7: of what the harvest as possible and reduce waste whenever
- 22:14Speaker 7: we can. So I love to learn the different ways
- 22:18Speaker 7: to use the materials that we have and then also teach.
- 22:21Speaker 7: So if I can come there, if you guys want
- 22:23Speaker 7: to save your deer skins, and if I'm able to
- 22:26Speaker 7: teach you guys, I would love that.
- 22:28Speaker 2: And oh we're definitely doing that, man.
- 22:30Speaker 9: Yeah, what is it?
- 22:31Speaker 5: Like?
- 22:31Speaker 11: What would the timeline be from like killing a deer
- 22:34Speaker 11: and skinning it and to turning that into what you're
- 22:38Speaker 11: doing there, so you.
- 22:42Speaker 7: Could put it like if you were to skin it
- 22:44Speaker 7: and immediately tan it or okay, so you'd skin it,
- 22:49Speaker 7: and you want to make sure you skin it close
- 22:50Speaker 7: so you don't have to skin it twice. But if
- 22:53Speaker 7: youve flesh that on there, you know, we can always
- 22:56Speaker 7: flesh it. I would say about two weeks.
- 23:00Speaker 2: Okay, okay, so you'll get us set up, like we'll
- 23:03Speaker 2: we'll save deer high whoever wants to save a deer
- 23:05Speaker 2: hide and and uh, we'll kind of instruct them on
- 23:07Speaker 2: what they want to you know, so everything's ready, we'll
- 23:10Speaker 2: get set up. You'll come down, introduce the process, make
- 23:13Speaker 2: sure everything's going good, and then we can kind of
- 23:15Speaker 2: carry on once we get started. In your abs.
- 23:20Speaker 7: Yeah, you took it in the line and that takes
- 23:22Speaker 7: you know, like three days, or it could you could
- 23:25Speaker 7: sell it for a week. So that's like you do
- 23:27Speaker 7: this and then you wait and then you put it
- 23:29Speaker 7: in the next solution and wait. So there's a lot
- 23:32Speaker 7: of time there where we can work or you.
- 23:34Speaker 5: Can sew heather if you wanted to do it hair on.
- 23:39Speaker 5: Do you just skip the line process or is it
- 23:42Speaker 5: is it you have to do it totally different.
- 23:45Speaker 7: It's a little different with seals. Yeah, you skip that
- 23:50Speaker 7: bucking process.
- 23:51Speaker 5: Gotcha, put it right in?
- 23:53Speaker 2: Yeah, No, man, I want the I want buckskin. You know,
- 23:59Speaker 2: Heather miled Man's saved up a bunch of his deer
- 24:01Speaker 2: skins and he had this super nineteen seventies buckskin jacket.
- 24:06Speaker 5: It's great.
- 24:07Speaker 2: You never the seventies they'd put the belts on everything
- 24:09Speaker 2: and everything. Yeah, but he had it dyed black and
- 24:11Speaker 2: it was all of his own deer skins. And I
- 24:13Speaker 2: don't know what the hell happened to that thing, Like
- 24:16Speaker 2: someone horked it when he died. Like we had a
- 24:18Speaker 2: lot of different family members kind of running off of stuff.
- 24:20Speaker 2: I mean, you know they're right, yeah, but someone horked
- 24:23Speaker 2: that jacket.
- 24:23Speaker 11: Did you guys have Like during deer season, people would
- 24:27Speaker 11: put out like fifty five gallon drums just like out
- 24:30Speaker 11: in the country in spots and there'd be a sign
- 24:33Speaker 11: there said dump your deer hide in here.
- 24:35Speaker 2: No. But when our fur auction was Ravana fur auction,
- 24:41Speaker 2: and when you went to fur auction that everything was
- 24:43Speaker 2: bid on, like I would take this like this odd
- 24:45Speaker 2: would go up on the auction table, right and you
- 24:49Speaker 2: might you might have your you might have let's say
- 24:52Speaker 2: it was odters. You haven't divided large, medium, small, male, female,
- 24:58Speaker 2: and every one of those things is a lot, and
- 25:00Speaker 2: they all get bid on individually. So if your trapper
- 25:03Speaker 2: divides his muskrats into four piles, every pile gets bid on,
- 25:09Speaker 2: every trapper's every pile gets bit on. The way they
- 25:11Speaker 2: would handle deer skins is the first deer skin that
- 25:14Speaker 2: came across the table, they'd bid on that deer skin,
- 25:17Speaker 2: and then that buyer entered into a contract and he
- 25:20Speaker 2: bought every deer skin at that price, and it was
- 25:24Speaker 2: usually like four or five six.
- 25:26Speaker 4: Bucks, and he that's all going to a tannery to
- 25:28Speaker 4: get turned.
- 25:29Speaker 2: Into the buckskin, and guys would be out in the
- 25:31Speaker 2: parking lot cutting them in half and stuff, you know,
- 25:34Speaker 2: to roll it up and sell it as too. But
- 25:38Speaker 2: it was real common to sell them. But see, like
- 25:40Speaker 2: I don't think the price has changed. So in the
- 25:43Speaker 2: mid eighties it was five bucks. Now I think it's
- 25:46Speaker 2: five bucks now, and now that's like a buck. And
- 25:49Speaker 2: I think that people just don't it's just there's not
- 25:52Speaker 2: money in it. That leather mostly goes to gloves. So
- 25:56Speaker 2: I would dude, I would love to learn how to
- 25:58Speaker 2: make my own. I've just been too lazy to do it.
- 26:02Speaker 7: During the winter, I work on like I try to
- 26:04Speaker 7: make new patterns and try new things. I made a
- 26:06Speaker 7: sealskin coat which I have here.
- 26:08Speaker 2: Yeah, put that coat on real quick. I want to
- 26:09Speaker 2: see that. Then we got a Then we got a
- 26:12Speaker 2: question for you, a fan question. See that bad ass man?
- 26:15Speaker 2: Put that thing on? Oh you trimmed it in too.
- 26:19Speaker 4: That's like some natural camouflage there.
- 26:21Speaker 7: That's why I tell you snow camel a fully removable
- 26:25Speaker 7: washable liner. What weighs eight pounds and so.
- 26:31Speaker 5: It's like a weighted blanket.
- 26:32Speaker 2: Now that is amazing. Though, have you been running around that?
- 26:38Speaker 7: Oh? I wear it just in the house. I can't.
- 26:40Speaker 7: I just love this thing.
- 26:41Speaker 2: Could you? Would you be allowed to sell that jacket?
- 26:44Speaker 2: Would that be? Would that fit the definition of made
- 26:46Speaker 2: into something? Yes? Boy, I can't even hear. What would
- 26:52Speaker 2: you have to get for that jacket?
- 26:55Speaker 7: Oh? I don't even know. I don't think you could
- 26:57Speaker 7: put a value on things like this. I mean this
- 26:59Speaker 7: is a custom like pattern. I made the pattern from
- 27:02Speaker 7: a coat that I really liked and saved. And yeah,
- 27:07Speaker 7: I do have I have one other new pattern. I'm
- 27:09Speaker 7: gonna show you. Somebody wrote in and it has a question.
- 27:15Speaker 2: Yeah, we're gonna hit with that question.
- 27:18Speaker 7: But this other this is super special. So I've never
- 27:21Speaker 7: done this before. But do you guys know what this is?
- 27:25Speaker 2: Yeah? No, yeah, yeah, I was gonna say electric blanket,
- 27:32Speaker 2: but then I was like, that's a very small like it.
- 27:35Speaker 7: When you when you get old, everything hurts. So for
- 27:41Speaker 7: Steve's birthday, I am making a custom for cover for
- 27:45Speaker 7: this pad. Yeah, to help with all of those aches
- 27:52Speaker 7: and pains and midlife crises.
- 27:56Speaker 2: That's a novel product. Yeah, I'm gonna plug it in
- 28:00Speaker 2: and get a long extension cord.
- 28:01Speaker 5: Take that.
- 28:08Speaker 2: Okay, here's a question from a fan.
- 28:12Speaker 7: This is a help with the traditional words.
- 28:17Speaker 2: Okay, you want you want to do the question. I
- 28:20Speaker 2: was going to read your question, but.
- 28:21Speaker 7: This there's some fling get in there.
- 28:24Speaker 2: So I thought, oh, then you do it. Go ahead, Okay,
- 28:29Speaker 2: I'll do it. Then you do it. So Heather was asked,
- 28:33Speaker 2: how far are you typically shooting when sea otter hunting.
- 28:37Speaker 2: I'm kickside.
- 28:42Speaker 7: Uh it's Kiksadi. That's the clan he belongs to, which
- 28:46Speaker 7: is Raven.
- 28:47Speaker 2: Okay, I'm Kiksadi. Out of Sitka and hoping to harvest
- 28:51Speaker 2: my first sea otter this weekend, weather permitting, that's cool,
- 28:54Speaker 2: And any other tips they ask.
- 29:02Speaker 3: Then it says, oh, yeah, Heather, I didn't I didn't
- 29:07Speaker 3: give that last part to Steve. Yeah, that's my fault.
- 29:11Speaker 7: Okay. Goodness cheese to you and the meat eater crew.
- 29:14Speaker 7: Goodness cheese means thank you. And this is from Naje
- 29:18Speaker 7: that's his traditional name.
- 29:21Speaker 2: That's great ling.
- 29:22Speaker 7: It from Sitka Raven, which is my opposite. I'm Ego clan.
- 29:28Speaker 7: So how far are you okay? So typically you're shooting
- 29:31Speaker 7: from the boat and I would say within one hundred
- 29:36Speaker 7: yards up. Sometimes you can get off on a rock
- 29:40Speaker 7: and shoot and you know, get a rest and aim farther,
- 29:43Speaker 7: but that really rarely happens. Any other tips, I would
- 29:51Speaker 7: say it helps to have a good driver who of
- 29:55Speaker 7: course they have to be eligible to participate by the
- 29:59Speaker 7: Marine man Action Act guidelines. But well it's not guidelines,
- 30:04Speaker 7: it's the law. But I would say when you're approaching
- 30:08Speaker 7: sea otter, make sure you go with the swell or
- 30:10Speaker 7: the chop instead of against it. That way you're getting
- 30:14Speaker 7: a smoother approach. And it helps to have a really
- 30:19Speaker 7: light like a hair trigger, real light trigger and just
- 30:25Speaker 7: takes a lot of practice and miss a lot. And
- 30:29Speaker 7: we shoot everything that we harvest. So whether it's a
- 30:31Speaker 7: sea otter, CEO d or we shoot, we try to
- 30:35Speaker 7: shoot everything in the head so it doesn't suffer. And
- 30:38Speaker 7: that way we ensure that the pelt isn't damaged and
- 30:41Speaker 7: the meat is not damaged.
- 30:43Speaker 4: So what what uh cartridge are you shooting them with? Heather?
- 30:50Speaker 7: I started out shooting with a two two and now
- 30:54Speaker 7: last year I got a AR so the two two
- 30:57Speaker 7: three one.
- 30:59Speaker 2: A think I know about how they're shooting. And she
- 31:01Speaker 2: explained it to me as well. Is she's not kind
- 31:05Speaker 2: of hard to describe. Maybe you can help me when
- 31:08Speaker 2: I bring this up. She's not fighting the movement. She's
- 31:12Speaker 2: not fighting the movement of the boat.
- 31:13Speaker 4: Like using the movement.
- 31:14Speaker 2: Yeah, she's like she's saying that you have this tendency
- 31:18Speaker 2: to kind of want to like somehow rule out the
- 31:20Speaker 2: movement in the boat or overcome it. But she's she's giving,
- 31:25Speaker 2: she's like jibing with the movement, you know, time in it.
- 31:28Speaker 7: Yeah, like having a good driver. My dad knows how
- 31:31Speaker 7: to hunt, so he knows how to put you on
- 31:33Speaker 7: the sea otter. But but you want to shoot before
- 31:37Speaker 7: they dive under. So they're kind of laying there eating
- 31:41Speaker 7: and then they when you approach them, they sometimes they
- 31:43Speaker 7: go see what's coming at him. You want to get
- 31:47Speaker 7: a shot off right then. So you want to be
- 31:49Speaker 7: ready because when they start to dive, it turns into this.
- 31:53Speaker 7: It reminds you of those games at the arcade where
- 31:55Speaker 7: you like.
- 31:56Speaker 4: Are sack them.
- 31:56Speaker 7: Holes are popping up and you just don't know yep,
- 32:00Speaker 7: and it becomes more difficult. But yeah, so the boat
- 32:03Speaker 7: is moving with the swell. They're moving in a distance
- 32:08Speaker 7: at a different rate, so I kind of go on
- 32:10Speaker 7: my tippy toes and bend my knees and you want
- 32:13Speaker 7: to like move with the swell. And you're not going
- 32:16Speaker 7: to get a steady aim and get those cross hairs
- 32:19Speaker 7: on them for very long. So you just want to
- 32:20Speaker 7: shoot right when your cross hairs past their head. And yes,
- 32:25Speaker 7: it just takes practice.
- 32:27Speaker 11: And is there any danger of those otters sink in
- 32:31Speaker 11: like a seal mite or do they just stay afloat after.
- 32:34Speaker 2: You kill them?
- 32:36Speaker 7: My first sea otter ever got sunk, but they rarely sink.
- 32:40Speaker 7: You want to shoot them in the head and their
- 32:41Speaker 7: fur is so yeah dense, and it traps that air,
- 32:46Speaker 7: you know, in the undercoat. They'll float. But occasionally if
- 32:50Speaker 7: you shoot a little low and they dive, they might
- 32:54Speaker 7: try to take a breath and breathing water and then sink,
- 32:59Speaker 7: but that doesn't happen very often. And I would you
- 33:05Speaker 7: need to skin them right away because of the for
- 33:07Speaker 7: density they hold onto their heat even if it's zero
- 33:11Speaker 7: degrees out, they'll stay warm for a really long time
- 33:14Speaker 7: and the belly will get green and they'll spoil. So
- 33:17Speaker 7: skin them right away. And yeah, make sure you take
- 33:21Speaker 7: good care of the materials that you get.
- 33:25Speaker 5: Right away, Heather. You mean like you you're skinning them
- 33:27Speaker 5: on the boat, like as soon as they come in.
- 33:30Speaker 7: Either on the boat if if you can, but usually
- 33:32Speaker 7: you're cruising trying to hunt and get as many as
- 33:37Speaker 7: you can. And as soon as I get home, I
- 33:40Speaker 7: skin them on a tailgate which is the perfect height.
- 33:43Speaker 7: And we don't hang them when we skin them. I
- 33:44Speaker 7: just roll them, you know, on my tailgate and that
- 33:48Speaker 7: seems to work best for me.
- 33:51Speaker 2: Good Daln cool. Well, thanks for joining, Heather.
- 33:54Speaker 7: Yeah, thank you. Happy birthday, Steve.
- 33:56Speaker 2: Thank you very much. We'll talk to you again soon.
- 34:00Speaker 2: It's great to have you on and I look forward
- 34:01Speaker 2: to talking to you next time too. All right, Phil
- 34:05Speaker 2: listener feedback, You got it, buddy.
- 34:07Speaker 3: Yeah, we've got a few. I just reminded everyone gets
- 34:09Speaker 3: some questions in. If you want, we're gonna do another
- 34:10Speaker 3: one of these at the very end of the show,
- 34:12Speaker 3: or I might be able to catch them right now.
- 34:14Speaker 5: Be fast.
- 34:15Speaker 3: First, one, let's see, this is about hunting history Steve.
- 34:18Speaker 3: Episode two. Someone's asking Grant is asking have they not
- 34:22Speaker 3: used any light ar technology on those glaciers? Seems like
- 34:25Speaker 3: you might find some fun stuff.
- 34:27Speaker 2: That's one thing no one brought up to me. Okay, yeah, right,
- 34:31Speaker 2: I'm trying to even think if boy, I don't you know,
- 34:35Speaker 2: I've been with people using light art. I don't even
- 34:37Speaker 2: know how, you know, I altoly don't know how that
- 34:40Speaker 2: technology works up against all that that all that ice,
- 34:45Speaker 2: and like, yeah, a glacier's got a lot of air
- 34:49Speaker 2: in it. Yeah, I have no way. I'm already over
- 34:52Speaker 2: my waiters. I have no idea. I had no one
- 34:54Speaker 2: mentioned that to me, though, I can tell you that.
- 34:55Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 34:57Speaker 3: Colin asks, well, I guess she first, he says, Steve,
- 34:59Speaker 3: I lost an inch of my pinky in a framing accident,
- 35:01Speaker 3: pitched it, pinched it in a lift. He's torn between
- 35:04Speaker 3: turning it into a fishing floor or sending it to
- 35:06Speaker 3: us to put in the Werner Bratsler machine.
- 35:08Speaker 2: Oh that's a great idea. If you send it over,
- 35:10Speaker 2: if it's nice and frozen, I'd like to eat it,
- 35:13Speaker 2: because I'm trying to find a way to be like
- 35:16Speaker 2: a subject matter expert on cannibalism without killing anybody.
- 35:19Speaker 11: I tried to explain my kids the other day that
- 35:22Speaker 11: cannibals they would call human meat long pork, and there
- 35:26Speaker 11: they weren't buying it.
- 35:27Speaker 2: No, I've heard that. Yeah, yeah, I'd like a little
- 35:29Speaker 2: long pork. How much you got? Is it meaty? If not,
- 35:33Speaker 2: I would put it into a I would. I would
- 35:36Speaker 2: if I had that happened to me, I would put
- 35:39Speaker 2: it into a little jar of and then people to
- 35:42Speaker 2: come over and display it, and I'd be like, I
- 35:45Speaker 2: guess what that is?
- 35:46Speaker 11: Turn that that pinky bone into a little pendant for
- 35:49Speaker 11: a necklace.
- 35:50Speaker 2: Yeah, that's what my boy's collar is. Little surgery stuff
- 35:53Speaker 2: they removed. I made a necklace.
- 35:55Speaker 4: Oh, you put it in a POxy.
- 35:56Speaker 2: That's next question.
- 35:59Speaker 3: Andreas asks he if if you see well, he specifically
- 36:03Speaker 3: asked you, Steve, when you use fur as a wallhanger,
- 36:05Speaker 3: do you leave it dried or do you get it
- 36:07Speaker 3: tanned before hanging it?
- 36:08Speaker 7: Oh?
- 36:08Speaker 2: No, no, no, no no, I get it tanned. I get
- 36:10Speaker 2: it tanned. What I'm holding right here is flesh stretched,
- 36:15Speaker 2: fleshed and stretched. And this lasts a long time. I
- 36:18Speaker 2: can't get my angle right where you can appreciate the immensity.
- 36:24Speaker 2: But no, you'll get it. And also this is leather out,
- 36:28Speaker 2: so when you tan, it'll flip. And then I use
- 36:30Speaker 2: those as wallhangers.
- 36:33Speaker 3: Jove and figuoa. I guess asks first, he says, happy birthday, Steve.
- 36:37Speaker 3: A question for everyone at the table. Has anyone ever
- 36:40Speaker 3: had any awkward situations dragging deer through permitted public hunting
- 36:43Speaker 3: areas like parks or conservancies?
- 36:46Speaker 2: No, but I'm sensitive to it.
- 36:49Speaker 4: I don't think, well, I mean awkward for who is
- 36:52Speaker 4: the question? I guess it's not awkward for me. But yeah,
- 36:55Speaker 4: I've carried some.
- 36:56Speaker 11: Mule deer bucks down an escalator at a ski resort
- 37:00Speaker 11: one time. That was pretty interesting.
- 37:04Speaker 5: Uh.
- 37:06Speaker 2: Yeah, I know what you're talking about, and I have
- 37:09Speaker 2: tended to I actually had this discussion with a friend
- 37:11Speaker 2: of mine once where it wasn't a dear. We were
- 37:14Speaker 2: carrying something up to a public parking lot mm hm,
- 37:18Speaker 2: and I was wanting to hide it. He's like, nothing
- 37:20Speaker 2: to be ashamed of. I'm like, I'm not ashamed. I
- 37:22Speaker 2: just like it's not like a matter of shame. I'm
- 37:24Speaker 2: just I like to be low pro Yeah, Like I
- 37:26Speaker 2: just don't. It's just I just prefer to be low
- 37:29Speaker 2: profile about it. It's like it's like zero shame. I
- 37:33Speaker 2: would just be like, why if it's a place I
- 37:35Speaker 2: like to hang out, why even draw like a little
- 37:40Speaker 2: bit of a or get someone pissed off or create
- 37:42Speaker 2: some headache or someone calling, even if you didn't do
- 37:45Speaker 2: anything wrong. The fact that they're going to call the cops.
- 37:49Speaker 11: I know that it's wrong and then you're gonna have
- 37:51Speaker 11: to explain your even though you didn't do anything.
- 37:53Speaker 2: So I usually just go like low profile in any
- 37:56Speaker 2: kind of situation like that, Like even at a public
- 37:58Speaker 2: if there's if you're parking a dark hunting at a
- 38:00Speaker 2: spot and other people are using the same parking lot,
- 38:03Speaker 2: I don't come out just like you know, throwing ducks
- 38:06Speaker 2: all over place. I'll throw them around later, but I
- 38:09Speaker 2: just kind of go, like just slip out of here,
- 38:12Speaker 2: make a scene.
- 38:12Speaker 5: I used to hunt a bunch in New Jersey back
- 38:14Speaker 5: in the day, and it was often like real small
- 38:17Speaker 5: woodlots and you would always have to like be real
- 38:23Speaker 5: careful about shot placement because you didn't want to like
- 38:26Speaker 5: get the run over and die in the neighbor's yard,
- 38:28Speaker 5: like especially if there's snow on the ground.
- 38:30Speaker 2: Yep.
- 38:30Speaker 5: I just heard some horror stories like deer dying in
- 38:33Speaker 5: swimming pools, and oh, like yeah, it was you know,
- 38:37Speaker 5: it was something you kind of had to watch out
- 38:39Speaker 5: for when you're hunting.
- 38:41Speaker 2: No small parcels reducing tensions.
- 38:44Speaker 3: Yeah, next question, Kentucky Thunder Outdoors says happy birthday. If
- 38:49Speaker 3: you had to choose, would you wear a cowboy hat
- 38:51Speaker 3: for a month or eat vegan for a year.
- 38:53Speaker 2: I'd go cowboy hat.
- 38:54Speaker 5: Yeah, Kentucky Thunder, I like that. I like that name.
- 39:01Speaker 2: That is a good name.
- 39:02Speaker 5: Man. I got a big strut and gobbler.
- 39:04Speaker 2: I know, if I was going turkey hunting with a
- 39:05Speaker 2: dude named Kentucky Thunder Outdoors, I'd be like, we're gonna get.
- 39:08Speaker 4: Something, and you'd be wearing a hat cowboy hat.
- 39:12Speaker 5: We'll do one more for this round.
- 39:14Speaker 3: Jeremy from Australia says, asks if you've have you ever
- 39:18Speaker 3: had any any encounters when predators harassed attacked your pack
- 39:21Speaker 3: animals when you were hunting.
- 39:24Speaker 2: I have certainly heard of them. I have had, but
- 39:28Speaker 2: I have witnessed personally only the opposite where elk would
- 39:35Speaker 2: take a great interest and uh take a great interest
- 39:40Speaker 2: in livestock at a couple occasions. But no, I've definitely
- 39:43Speaker 2: heard of that. I've never seen it, but I don't
- 39:44Speaker 2: holpe with livestock a lot. I'm not like I'm the
- 39:47Speaker 2: last guy I would ask a livestock question too.
- 39:50Speaker 11: Yes, No, I mean I've had my dog run into
- 39:53Speaker 11: a bear a couple of times, but no livestock issues.
- 39:56Speaker 2: You're all going to give you a different piece of
- 39:58Speaker 2: advice if you we're gonna ask livestock questions. I've learned it.
- 40:03Speaker 2: You can only ask a livestock question. This is gonna
- 40:05Speaker 2: sound like this is gonna annoy people. You can only
- 40:08Speaker 2: ask a livestock question as someone that was raised around livestock. Yeah,
- 40:13Speaker 2: Like it's not one of those things you can come
- 40:15Speaker 2: into late in life. Right, there's just too much subtlety
- 40:18Speaker 2: to it, you know, like guys that really know about horses, Like,
- 40:21Speaker 2: you see a horse, it looks like a horse to me,
- 40:23Speaker 2: and people will be like, oh, no, he like is
- 40:25Speaker 2: having whatever problem or he's you know what I mean.
- 40:28Speaker 2: They just they can just sense it.
- 40:30Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 40:30Speaker 11: I feel like I looked at a horse that maybe
- 40:33Speaker 11: had like one little lameness in its leg. I wouldn't
- 40:36Speaker 11: see anything, but that guy would be like, you can't
- 40:38Speaker 11: ride that one.
- 40:39Speaker 2: Yeah, they'll know, Like they'll be able to tell you
- 40:41Speaker 2: about its parents and stuff. You can't get that. No,
- 40:44Speaker 2: it's amazing people that grew up around it.
- 40:46Speaker 1: You know.
- 40:47Speaker 2: It's just one of those things you gotta absorb. So yeah,
- 40:49Speaker 2: i'd go find I wouldn't talk to me about it,
- 40:51Speaker 2: but no, I'd be able to tell you if something
- 40:53Speaker 2: showed up in a bear ate something that's never happened,
- 40:55Speaker 2: but it happens. I think, just to be a little
- 40:59Speaker 2: more helpful, I've more I guess even what I'm saying,
- 41:02Speaker 2: I've heard more about stuff coming for the feed mmm,
- 41:06Speaker 2: like bears getting tuned into the to the to the
- 41:09Speaker 2: supplement the grain and stuff for the horse.
- 41:11Speaker 11: I think a bigger danger than predators killing your livestock
- 41:15Speaker 11: is livestock killing you if you're using horses or mules,
- 41:18Speaker 11: you know, yeah, doing things.
- 41:20Speaker 2: Yeah yeah, if I had a pistol with me, that's
- 41:21Speaker 2: what my pistol before shooting the horse, trying to defend
- 41:27Speaker 2: myself from the.
- 41:27Speaker 5: Yeah, yeah, I've seen some horse wrecks.
- 41:31Speaker 2: All right, Uh, throw back Thursday. This is gonna take
- 41:34Speaker 2: require ten minutes, from eleven thirty five to eleven forty five.
- 41:37Speaker 4: What time is it film?
- 41:38Speaker 2: It's eleven forty one. We're already screwed.
- 41:42Speaker 3: It's over, So back on a Thursday, mon, Stephen Brody,
- 41:48Speaker 3: take me back to nineteen six.
- 41:53Speaker 4: This is my favorite one of his songs. And I
- 41:57Speaker 4: mentioned Stephen Brody world Ship.
- 42:01Speaker 2: It's fitting because you're one year older today.
- 42:04Speaker 4: He's past the point where birthdays matter.
- 42:06Speaker 2: Though, Oh dude, it really doesn't matter, you know, it
- 42:09Speaker 2: really doesn't matter. My kids today were it's so funny.
- 42:13Speaker 2: My little boy, my older boy, and he's in wood
- 42:16Speaker 2: shop and he'd made a honey dipper. You know what
- 42:21Speaker 2: do you call honey?
- 42:21Speaker 4: Yeah, the little thing with the roofs in it.
- 42:23Speaker 2: But the kid who was responsible for staying in them
- 42:26Speaker 2: all put like a lead based stain or something. So
- 42:30Speaker 2: my boy's like he gives it to me. He's like,
- 42:32Speaker 2: you can't really though, it's more like just for show,
- 42:36Speaker 2: because he says, because it's got like actual stain on it. Oh,
- 42:40Speaker 2: look at that.
- 42:43Speaker 5: You can get them.
- 42:46Speaker 11: You can eat while we're doing our little throwback.
- 42:48Speaker 2: Yeah, and put my ring onto.
- 42:52Speaker 11: This.
- 42:52Speaker 5: Shouldn't take one of our shorter throwbacks.
- 42:54Speaker 2: Phil's kind of undersounding the shore back throwback segment, not
- 42:57Speaker 2: real interested in it.
- 42:58Speaker 5: Oh no, it's a good one.
- 43:00Speaker 3: It's just not as jam packed as other ones because
- 43:01Speaker 3: Steve's not participating. Seth, we love you go first here.
- 43:07Speaker 5: Yeah, this photo here, I just had to go through
- 43:11Speaker 5: my cell phone real quick to see what I had
- 43:13Speaker 5: on there because it was, you know, a late notice
- 43:15Speaker 5: since Randall ditched us here.
- 43:17Speaker 2: But uh, that's a giant beaver.
- 43:19Speaker 5: This was I think the first time we went trapping together.
- 43:22Speaker 5: We filmed that little thing for YouTube, and yeah, we
- 43:26Speaker 5: caught a few nice beavers, but this was the biggest one.
- 43:31Speaker 2: I could tell it's a long time ago because I
- 43:33Speaker 2: don't have a blue shirt like that.
- 43:37Speaker 5: Yeah. I think it was twenty one, maybe twenty That
- 43:42Speaker 5: might have been twenty God, I was probably twenty.
- 43:48Speaker 3: And then we've got this video seth and then yeah,
- 43:50Speaker 3: this is just a video from the fish shack. This
- 43:54Speaker 3: was an old rusted double barrel that Steve has up there.
- 43:57Speaker 3: We're curious if it's still shot or blow up.
- 43:59Speaker 5: So you had that helmet on.
- 44:04Speaker 2: I don't even remember this.
- 44:10Speaker 11: It's hard to keep guns working up there. Uh.
- 44:22Speaker 5: At the end here he says, I'm gonna hang it
- 44:24Speaker 5: up and let it rust some more.
- 44:27Speaker 2: Hang that back home, let it russ some more.
- 44:35Speaker 5: Yeah, good times. Let's see that's pretty.
- 44:38Speaker 4: Oh yeah, show the other one first, philm.
- 44:40Speaker 2: Oh, sorry about that.
- 44:41Speaker 4: There's an order to this.
- 44:43Speaker 5: Look like.
- 44:45Speaker 11: This is uh, this is Steve and I's first hunt
- 44:49Speaker 11: together that we did for meat eater, and uh, I
- 44:53Speaker 11: found him this box. We were hiking in in the
- 44:55Speaker 11: morning in the dark, I remember, and it was real
- 44:58Speaker 11: hot for November m hm. And we're hiking in and
- 45:02Speaker 11: after like I don't know, fifteen twenty minutes maybe a
- 45:04Speaker 11: mile of hike, and Steve, Steve's.
- 45:06Speaker 5: Like, brody, brody, what are we doing? Where are we going?
- 45:09Speaker 11: Like he's getting real irritated because I think he was
- 45:12Speaker 11: swall sweated up.
- 45:14Speaker 2: That's not why.
- 45:18Speaker 11: But then we got to the glass and spot and
- 45:20Speaker 11: he's like, oh, I like this spot. Then we found
- 45:22Speaker 11: that about a few minutes later, and later that day
- 45:25Speaker 11: Steve killed him and then uh yeah, then I killed
- 45:29Speaker 11: that little dinker later later or not.
- 45:31Speaker 4: But you can see we're wearing some vintage first light though.
- 45:34Speaker 2: Oh yeah, I look like chaster. That deer's got a
- 45:38Speaker 2: bad hole in it. Walking away from that situation.
- 45:44Speaker 5: Nope, nope, So yeah, there we go. Cool.
- 45:49Speaker 2: God, you were young, Brody, Well, so are you good?
- 45:53Speaker 5: Lord? How this was this?
- 45:56Speaker 4: Probably not? I think it's at least nine years ago,
- 45:58Speaker 4: maybe ten years ago.
- 46:00Speaker 2: So what happens to a man age is like a
- 46:04Speaker 2: disease old age. It's like a disease.
- 46:09Speaker 11: But I feel like I'm I don't know, I'm hiking
- 46:12Speaker 11: around just as good now as I was back then.
- 46:14Speaker 2: Yeah, I was reading about last night. I'm reading this
- 46:16Speaker 2: book that my friend Ben has coming out called The
- 46:20Speaker 2: Mysterious Mister Knockamoto. It's about the inventor of blockchain and bitcoin.
- 46:25Speaker 4: Yep.
- 46:26Speaker 2: Anyways, dudes in that world are big into I had
- 46:29Speaker 2: no idea what dudes that are big into that world,
- 46:31Speaker 2: Like they were big into early Internet and and then
- 46:37Speaker 2: up into the twenty ten, two thousand and nine, big
- 46:39Speaker 2: into cryptography and stuff. They also happened like that mindset.
- 46:43Speaker 2: They're also big into cryogenics, where they're like getting there.
- 46:50Speaker 2: They get a lot of these dudes as they're dying,
- 46:51Speaker 2: they're getting their brains frozen or their whole body's frozen,
- 46:55Speaker 2: and they just feel it's like healthcare, right because some
- 46:59Speaker 2: day they're going to get rebooted. But if you really
- 47:03Speaker 2: had faith in that ship, if you really had faith,
- 47:08Speaker 2: you'd go in right now, right not gonna happen, come
- 47:13Speaker 2: back later when you're kicking ass. Because if you're going in,
- 47:17Speaker 2: if you're going in an old dead guy and they
- 47:20Speaker 2: bring you back, you still got a problem.
- 47:22Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah, for sure.
- 47:25Speaker 2: But if you, if you really believed, go now.
- 47:30Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 47:31Speaker 11: I don't know, Like I don't mind being my age,
- 47:34Speaker 11: Like I feel like hunting and hiking. I'm better than
- 47:37Speaker 11: I was back then, because you know, you got the
- 47:39Speaker 11: mentality to just go to.
- 47:41Speaker 5: I gotta say, ever since I started hunting with you,
- 47:43Speaker 5: I don't know, it's I don't know, it's like any
- 47:45Speaker 5: sort of slow down. No, No, you're just charging charging
- 47:49Speaker 5: a head.
- 47:50Speaker 2: Yeah. See, for me, what's happening is I've always been
- 47:54Speaker 2: too skinny, but when you get old, it winds up
- 47:56Speaker 2: being you're glad you were too skinny.
- 47:58Speaker 5: Yeah, you know what I'm saying, Like, I don't care
- 48:01Speaker 5: around extra weight.
- 48:02Speaker 2: Yeah, you used to be weak. Now you're just not old.
- 48:06Speaker 2: Do you know what I'm saying? Why is it working out? Yeah?
- 48:09Speaker 5: Yeah? All right?
- 48:10Speaker 2: Where are we at? What happens next? Well?
- 48:12Speaker 3: I was actually told to supply a throwback Thursday picture Steve,
- 48:16Speaker 3: and you know, I was thinking about all just an
- 48:18Speaker 3: endless trove of memories that we have together, Steve. And
- 48:20Speaker 3: the one that I pulled out was this teaky bar
- 48:24Speaker 3: that's right in Nashville, when I was trying to go
- 48:27Speaker 3: to this tiki bar by myself because I was ashamed,
- 48:29Speaker 3: and then you, Katie cal and Rourke Denver all.
- 48:33Speaker 11: Joined and it looks like you're there with Vince Bond man.
- 48:37Speaker 11: He's got a Vince Bond thing going.
- 48:39Speaker 2: Oh yeah, I forgot about that.
- 48:40Speaker 3: It's kind of a crappy equality picture, but yeah, that
- 48:42Speaker 3: was That was February twenty twenty, a month before everything
- 48:46Speaker 3: shut down.
- 48:46Speaker 2: No, that was before I quit drinking. Yeah anyway, yeah, yeah,
- 48:50Speaker 2: fun times. You Fielm making out.
- 48:57Speaker 7: All right.
- 48:58Speaker 2: Where are we at. Oh, we've got Randy coming in. No,
- 49:00Speaker 2: I'm excited about this man. This is a good story.
- 49:02Speaker 2: Next up on the phone, we have Fisheries Division chief
- 49:05Speaker 2: for Michigan's Department of Natural Resources, Randy. I'm gonna go
- 49:11Speaker 2: out on a limb. Well, we'll ask him what the
- 49:13Speaker 2: hell's last name is Clairemont? Hello Randy, thanks for being
- 49:16Speaker 2: here and welcome to the show. What's going on? I
- 49:19Speaker 2: hit you with your last name? I want to make
- 49:20Speaker 2: sure I got it right.
- 49:21Speaker 10: Yeah you did. You did great? See if it's Clairemont.
- 49:24Speaker 10: And happy birthday by the way.
- 49:25Speaker 2: Thank you, buddy. A bunch of questions. Yeah, when telling
- 49:31Speaker 2: you how to how to do this in good order?
- 49:34Speaker 2: When did Michigan lose? Like what was the last grayling?
- 49:39Speaker 10: You know, it's funny you say that because the last
- 49:43Speaker 10: grayling was actually in the Upper Peninsula in nineteen thirty two.
- 49:48Speaker 10: Is so there's there's you know, you go back to
- 49:50Speaker 10: the historic record. There's some debate about that, but the
- 49:55Speaker 10: distribution in the Upper Peninsula was actually pretty small. It
- 49:58Speaker 10: was not as big as the northern and lower And
- 50:01Speaker 10: I understand you're familiar a little bit with the Muskegon
- 50:04Speaker 10: area of Michigan. Yes, an article from Ben East. This
- 50:08Speaker 10: article is published in a journal Outdoor Life, in May
- 50:12Speaker 10: of nineteen thirty. You mean the East, Yeah, the Ben East.
- 50:17Speaker 10: And he's trying to figure out if they're still grailing
- 50:19Speaker 10: around Michigan or if they've been extirpated. In particular, he
- 50:25Speaker 10: talks to an angler that's been fishing for grailing for
- 50:29Speaker 10: years in the Muskegan area and he.
- 50:32Speaker 4: Cites some of this article. No way, that's pretty cool.
- 50:35Speaker 10: The angler was Initials E. Smagoon of Muskegan, Michigan. I'm
- 50:40Speaker 10: bringing the nineteen thirty article right now. And he said,
- 50:43Speaker 10: I fish for grailing. I would in the early eighteen eighties.
- 50:47Speaker 10: I catch one after another in Carlton, San Cleveland and
- 50:52Speaker 10: Silver Creeks and empty into the White River.
- 50:55Speaker 2: And you gotta be kidding me.
- 50:56Speaker 5: Really, that's cool.
- 50:58Speaker 10: They probably familiar of those streams.
- 51:00Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 51:01Speaker 10: In any case, he said he was very concerned about
- 51:04Speaker 10: the the grayling being extirpated because he only caught one
- 51:09Speaker 10: the previous year and none that year, and that was
- 51:12Speaker 10: nineteen thirty.
- 51:13Speaker 11: Well, what did man, what what did him in?
- 51:18Speaker 5: Randy?
- 51:18Speaker 4: Like, why did they disappear?
- 51:21Speaker 10: Yeah? Yeah, it's you know well understood that in Michigan streams,
- 51:27Speaker 10: you know, we have sandy soils, relatively low gradient compared
- 51:30Speaker 10: to mountain streams, you know, but the deforestation, just clearing
- 51:34Speaker 10: all the vegetation, it allowed those streams to warm up
- 51:38Speaker 10: and then all the sediment organic sediment, not the not
- 51:42Speaker 10: the sand and the you know, when you have sandy
- 51:44Speaker 10: soils with a lot of vegetation, the water will seep
- 51:47Speaker 10: through the ground quickly and then flow groundwater in the streams.
- 51:50Speaker 10: So you've got cover that keeps them cold and cold
- 51:53Speaker 10: water groundwater. When you take all the vegetation off and DeForests,
- 51:57Speaker 10: what happened in Michigan and a lot of other into
- 52:00Speaker 10: western states, that water just becomes surface water runs right
- 52:04Speaker 10: into the streams, and that that pretty much decimated grailing.
- 52:10Speaker 10: In addition to we didn't have a department natural Resources,
- 52:13Speaker 10: didn't have any kind of protections. So unregulated fishing and
- 52:17Speaker 10: graling are super fun fish to catch. They're they're really enjoyable,
- 52:23Speaker 10: a little bit easier to catch the summer trout species,
- 52:26Speaker 10: so they were easy to fish for.
- 52:28Speaker 2: Hey what uh, where were you able to find to
- 52:34Speaker 2: do a reintroduction? Where are you able to find grailing
- 52:39Speaker 2: that seems like it's you know, it seems like it'd
- 52:42Speaker 2: be like the right grailing right or the closest to
- 52:44Speaker 2: the right grailing.
- 52:46Speaker 10: Yep. Well, so, you know, we looked at the lower
- 52:50Speaker 10: forty eight and trying to determine if any populations existed
- 52:54Speaker 10: that could serve as a source population for Michigan. The
- 52:58Speaker 10: only population that we are aware of is the Big
- 53:02Speaker 10: Hole River of Montana, and actually Montana's rebuiltation program. You know,
- 53:08Speaker 10: we're mirroring a lot of things that Montana has been doing,
- 53:12Speaker 10: but that population isn't at the level where it could
- 53:15Speaker 10: serve as a gam meat source. So we end up
- 53:17Speaker 10: going to the Chino River in Alaska for the gam
- 53:22Speaker 10: meat source. And really, you know a lot of people say,
- 53:25Speaker 10: you know, with with warming of streams and things like that,
- 53:29Speaker 10: is this the right time? But what we find these
- 53:32Speaker 10: populations is that they're high highly migratory in their native range.
- 53:36Speaker 10: So they're going to find the cold groundwater and they're
- 53:38Speaker 10: going to go where they need to go. We expect that,
- 53:41Speaker 10: and it's part of the reason we selected the China River.
- 53:44Speaker 2: Stock How many, how many and where are you going
- 53:49Speaker 2: to try are you going to try to cut them loose.
- 53:52Speaker 10: Yeah, So you know, we went through a stream candidate
- 53:58Speaker 10: selection process where basically we wanted stakeholders partners in this
- 54:04Speaker 10: to nominate rivers that they felt grailing reintroduction should should occur.
- 54:10Speaker 10: We then went and looked at the habitat suitability in
- 54:13Speaker 10: those rivers. We did a lot of work before we
- 54:15Speaker 10: ever went to Alaska to get the eggs. And by
- 54:17Speaker 10: the way, shout out to Alaska. You know those staff
- 54:20Speaker 10: up there did a phenomenal job and really helped Michigan
- 54:22Speaker 10: out a lot. So we went through the habitat suitability,
- 54:27Speaker 10: and that habitat suitability, we want to make sure that
- 54:29Speaker 10: you know that all the things that led to the
- 54:31Speaker 10: demise have been addressed, as well as competition with other
- 54:34Speaker 10: introduced trout and salmon species, and we have very strong
- 54:39Speaker 10: partnership with you know, nonprofits, angling groups, tribal governments, you
- 54:45Speaker 10: name it. And that really accommodation of those factors led
- 54:49Speaker 10: to a selection of three streams, the upper and oftentimes
- 54:54Speaker 10: the grailing you're talking about the upper part of the watershed.
- 54:57Speaker 10: These are the headwaters of the streams had waters of
- 55:00Speaker 10: the Little Masstea River, headwaters of the Boordman River near
- 55:04Speaker 10: Traverse City. Yeah, the Maple River and in all three
- 55:09Speaker 10: and you know these are really northern lower northwestern lower.
- 55:13Speaker 2: Man, that is so cool. Man. What do you think? Uh,
- 55:18Speaker 2: how confident are you in success and what success look
- 55:23Speaker 2: like for you? I mean are you does success look
- 55:26Speaker 2: like a breeding population or what is it?
- 55:29Speaker 4: Yeah?
- 55:30Speaker 10: You know, I think if we saw grayling reproducing successfully
- 55:35Speaker 10: within their historic range, you know, that'd be a great
- 55:39Speaker 10: technical definition of hey, we've reached success. Right to me,
- 55:44Speaker 10: it's more than that, because you know, I would get
- 55:48Speaker 10: questions a lot over the years. I've been working in
- 55:51Speaker 10: fisheries for over twenty five years, originally from Michigan, is
- 55:55Speaker 10: why are we going to bring back grayling? We have
- 55:58Speaker 10: a town, you city, Grailing, named after the fish that
- 56:02Speaker 10: we no longer have, So you know this means a
- 56:06Speaker 10: lot and and and trying to make a commitment. You know,
- 56:09Speaker 10: we're not going to be successful in day one, nor
- 56:12Speaker 10: have we tried Have we been successful? This has been
- 56:16Speaker 10: tried half a dozen times. Really, and really the Montana
- 56:20Speaker 10: model where you're putting the eggs right into the streams
- 56:25Speaker 10: and again addressing some of the other things about partnership
- 56:29Speaker 10: and habitat suitability. Those are all important factors to why
- 56:34Speaker 10: we think we can be successful now in the rebuiltation.
- 56:38Speaker 10: But like anything else, what it really boils down to
- 56:40Speaker 10: is are we committed to doing this? Do we are?
- 56:43Speaker 10: We committed to bringing grailing back to Michigan?
- 56:46Speaker 7: We are?
- 56:48Speaker 2: So what happens? What's going to happen when down the road,
- 56:54Speaker 2: a dude's out fishing brookies or whatever steelhead and he
- 56:58Speaker 2: hooks the grailing. Presumably you're not going to close down
- 57:04Speaker 2: stream sections. You're not gonna you're not gonna like remove
- 57:08Speaker 2: fishing from these stream sections. So it'll have to be
- 57:10Speaker 2: that people know they're there when they get one, to
- 57:13Speaker 2: be careful turn it back because because it's not it's
- 57:16Speaker 2: going to be a while. So there's like a harvestable number.
- 57:18Speaker 2: I mean, that's like a really best case scenario, right, Yeah.
- 57:22Speaker 10: Absolutely. We already removed the regulations prohibiting targeted fishing, so
- 57:28Speaker 10: if you catch a grailing, you can take a picture
- 57:30Speaker 10: of it immediate release. We've had a you know a
- 57:35Speaker 10: lot of interest, and so I expect anglers, you know,
- 57:38Speaker 10: they're really going to seek out these opportunities. We're still
- 57:40Speaker 10: a couple of years down the road. But myself included.
- 57:44Speaker 10: I've I've caught grayling in Alaska. I really really am
- 57:48Speaker 10: hoping that during my tenure I can catch a wild
- 57:52Speaker 10: graling in Michigan and staff that picture and release that fish.
- 57:56Speaker 10: And right now regulations allow for that, so we're just
- 57:59Speaker 10: hoping hoping that the fish will cooperate.
- 58:02Speaker 2: Man, that's amazing. I would make that trip back there
- 58:05Speaker 2: to see that happen to do that. You Know, there's
- 58:08Speaker 2: a thing I've really appreciated about. I haven't lived in
- 58:12Speaker 2: Michigan for forever. I left in the late nineties mid nineties.
- 58:14Speaker 2: But the thing I've appreciated about just the Great Lakes
- 58:18Speaker 2: angling community in general and fisheries management there in general,
- 58:23Speaker 2: is going back and really the work people are doing
- 58:28Speaker 2: to really put an emphasis on those native fish, you know,
- 58:33Speaker 2: like the way I've seen anglers come to have a
- 58:37Speaker 2: much greater appreciation for lake trout, for instance, the enthusiasm around,
- 58:43Speaker 2: the enthusiasm around getting sturgeon back in the rivers, people
- 58:48Speaker 2: treating whitefish with a lot of respect, work to bring
- 58:51Speaker 2: Arctic grailing back, Like, I love seeing that stuff, man,
- 58:54Speaker 2: where people are kind of having that ecological awareness of
- 58:57Speaker 2: where they live, of kind of getting curious about what
- 59:01Speaker 2: this place used to look like, what went wrong? Why
- 59:05Speaker 2: does it look like it does now? What are the
- 59:07Speaker 2: implications of invasive you know, aquatic invasive species, and how
- 59:11Speaker 2: do we start turning back the clock and bringing back
- 59:13Speaker 2: somebod these really cool, unique fish to that area. I
- 59:17Speaker 2: know you guys do work in that space, and people
- 59:20Speaker 2: in the conservation movement do work in that space. I
- 59:22Speaker 2: think it's phenomenal, man. I'd love to see it.
- 59:25Speaker 10: Yeah, I appreciate it. And just just because you say
- 59:27Speaker 10: you have, you know, really seen it since the nineties,
- 59:29Speaker 10: I'll tell you we just recently. Now it's kind of
- 59:32Speaker 10: lake superior. Lake trout populations fully restored. But if you
- 59:37Speaker 10: did eat lake trout, you know, back in the eighties
- 59:39Speaker 10: and nineties, a lot of people didn't think that they
- 59:44Speaker 10: had a lot of table fare. Put it that way.
- 59:46Speaker 10: The lake drout today are some of the best tasting
- 59:49Speaker 10: Great Lakes fish out there. And there's a lot of
- 59:51Speaker 10: reason for it, much as to do with the health
- 59:54Speaker 10: of the Great Lakes, the diverse die items. But I
- 59:57Speaker 10: tell you, if you can get an episode where you
- 59:59Speaker 10: have some flay a lake trout caught out of the
- 1:00:01Speaker 10: Great lakes. Now that that meat is just bright orange
- 1:00:07Speaker 10: and fabulous, absolutely incredible. So yeah, attachment to the native
- 1:00:13Speaker 10: species increase angling opportunity. But the end goal is that
- 1:00:16Speaker 10: people can use at it and we hear more and
- 1:00:19Speaker 10: more about you know, fish as food by recreational anglers,
- 1:00:24Speaker 10: you know, across the state.
- 1:00:25Speaker 2: Sure man, Yeah, keep up with the good work. I
- 1:00:27Speaker 2: love seeing it and I love hearing stories about those
- 1:00:30Speaker 2: native fish come back. Like, it's a really unique environment,
- 1:00:33Speaker 2: all that whole Great Lakes system. And you know, if
- 1:00:37Speaker 2: we if we let our guard down, we're gonna wind up.
- 1:00:41Speaker 2: We're more and more and more. No matter where you
- 1:00:42Speaker 2: go in the world, where you are, you go in
- 1:00:44Speaker 2: the country, you're gonna see these kind of same things.
- 1:00:47Speaker 2: And to have that all that biodiversity and like these
- 1:00:50Speaker 2: unique fish from these unique places just makes it so
- 1:00:52Speaker 2: much more exciting to travel around. So I mean, I
- 1:00:54Speaker 2: wish you guys the best of luck on that project.
- 1:00:56Speaker 2: I think it's super cool, excellent.
- 1:00:59Speaker 10: Yeah, thanks again for the opportunity, and I really appreciate
- 1:01:03Speaker 10: the attension of grailing and hopefully we can achieve what
- 1:01:06Speaker 10: we're set out to do.
- 1:01:07Speaker 2: So send me a couple of las.
- 1:01:10Speaker 10: Yeah, this spring is our first big introd.
- 1:01:15Speaker 5: Oh excellent, alright, good luck dude, appreciate it.
- 1:01:18Speaker 2: Thank you, all right, Phil, about to the end of
- 1:01:22Speaker 2: the show. But what about that? What about that listener feedback?
- 1:01:25Speaker 5: Buddy, No, let's hit it. Kyle.
- 1:01:28Speaker 3: Here's kind of a heavy one. What does the crew
- 1:01:30Speaker 3: think about Indiana introducing a bill to legalize the sale
- 1:01:32Speaker 3: of venison and another one to legalize the release of
- 1:01:35Speaker 3: c w D resistant farm deer into the wild.
- 1:01:38Speaker 2: I don't like either of them.
- 1:01:40Speaker 11: I didn't know about the Indiana thing, but not a
- 1:01:42Speaker 11: good idea. Neither is like we already we've talked about
- 1:01:46Speaker 11: the releasing.
- 1:01:48Speaker 2: It's it's pissing in the wind. Yeah, I don't think
- 1:01:52Speaker 2: like I think it sounds like a great idea, But
- 1:01:55Speaker 2: when you look in like actual like genetic transfer, genetic
- 1:02:01Speaker 2: transfer that you're somehow going to like overcome like the
- 1:02:05Speaker 2: native genome and overwhelm it and actually like create a
- 1:02:10Speaker 2: strain of it, and I think it's pissing in the wind.
- 1:02:14Speaker 2: And I definitely don't like the idea this. People keep
- 1:02:17Speaker 2: wanting to go down this path of commodifying deer meat
- 1:02:20Speaker 2: and selling deer meat. Listen, if you think right now,
- 1:02:24Speaker 2: if you think right now, it's getting harder and harder
- 1:02:26Speaker 2: and harder to find hunting spots because of because of
- 1:02:30Speaker 2: the takeoff of like leasing for deer, like farms where
- 1:02:34Speaker 2: there used to be like ten twelve people hunting the farm,
- 1:02:36Speaker 2: now two guys hunt the farm because they lease it.
- 1:02:39Speaker 2: You think that you're seeing a reduction and acreage available
- 1:02:42Speaker 2: to you to come hunt. Wait till a person looks
- 1:02:45Speaker 2: and each of these deer is worth two three hundred bucks, right,
- 1:02:48Speaker 2: come on.
- 1:02:50Speaker 11: I don't like it that, Like, I mean, he's parents
- 1:02:54Speaker 11: selling deer meat with CWD, and it's like, how are
- 1:02:57Speaker 11: you ever gonna sell deer meat when you know what
- 1:03:00Speaker 11: I mean?
- 1:03:01Speaker 2: Yeah, I know you'll be like you're gonna kill all
- 1:03:03Speaker 2: these deer to sell. Someone's gonna check them for c W.
- 1:03:06Speaker 2: It's just it's it's it's like people looking at complicated
- 1:03:11Speaker 2: problems and thinking they got these little solutions for him.
- 1:03:13Speaker 2: I think it's I think it's stupid. I mean, I
- 1:03:16Speaker 2: don't even be so blunt. No, I don't want to
- 1:03:18Speaker 2: say it stupid.
- 1:03:18Speaker 5: I don't don't.
- 1:03:19Speaker 2: Yeah, I definite don't want to say it stupid because
- 1:03:21Speaker 2: that sounds like not being productive. Ain't a good idea.
- 1:03:25Speaker 2: How's that ain't good idea?
- 1:03:28Speaker 9: Uh?
- 1:03:28Speaker 3: Do you guys have favorite favorite mounts or skins you
- 1:03:31Speaker 3: have in your houses, respectively?
- 1:03:34Speaker 11: I haven't got my favorite still sitting at the taxidermist
- 1:03:37Speaker 11: or that whoever's beetling it right?
- 1:03:39Speaker 2: What are you missing? That?
- 1:03:40Speaker 7: Move?
- 1:03:40Speaker 2: Oh your moose? Yeah, yeah, that'll be good.
- 1:03:44Speaker 5: I got a couple of hides. I like a bunch,
- 1:03:47Speaker 5: one being a red fox that uh Steve and I
- 1:03:50Speaker 5: trapped last year. And I also have another red fox
- 1:03:55Speaker 5: from from Pennsylvania that's beautiful. And uh, skull mounts. I
- 1:03:59Speaker 5: like the COO's dear. I just like how tiny their
- 1:04:02Speaker 5: little skulls. Yeah, easy to move. They just look cool.
- 1:04:08Speaker 2: So all right, Well.
- 1:04:09Speaker 3: It's a tough one. But if you don't know it,
- 1:04:11Speaker 3: maybe you could direct this person to someone who does.
- 1:04:13Speaker 3: Is there a way to rehabilitate house fire, smoke damage,
- 1:04:16Speaker 3: tanned furs?
- 1:04:21Speaker 2: I would call you know what I would do. Call
- 1:04:25Speaker 2: He's gonna hate me for saying this, Call John Hayes
- 1:04:29Speaker 2: Taxi because I I've had questions like this for John, Like,
- 1:04:34Speaker 2: I'll give you a piece of feedback. John, give me
- 1:04:36Speaker 2: one time I had a very old I have a
- 1:04:38Speaker 2: really old bear hide, like a really really old bear
- 1:04:41Speaker 2: hide that never took good care of. And uh, I
- 1:04:46Speaker 2: was like wanting to know it's I kind of kept
- 1:04:48Speaker 2: it outside over the outdoor furniture under our patio, protected
- 1:04:51Speaker 2: but outside, and it just got greasy and nasty. And
- 1:04:55Speaker 2: I was like, man, I like like shampoo this thing,
- 1:04:59Speaker 2: you know. And he said, take a little wet a
- 1:05:01Speaker 2: little patch down, Just take a corner and wet it down.
- 1:05:05Speaker 2: And he says, if you wet that down, try to
- 1:05:07Speaker 2: tear it with your hand. When you get it wet.
- 1:05:10Speaker 2: If you can tear that thing with your hand, don't
- 1:05:11Speaker 2: do it. I got that corner wet and sure enough, man,
- 1:05:15Speaker 2: you could just rip it like like wet paper. So
- 1:05:19Speaker 2: he's got little tips like that. Another thing I had.
- 1:05:22Speaker 2: Another thing John Hayes did for me is I had
- 1:05:25Speaker 2: a bad kind of a really long story. I got
- 1:05:28Speaker 2: a mountain goat and I wanted it. I got it
- 1:05:30Speaker 2: rugged out. Oh it's hanging right there. When I got
- 1:05:33Speaker 2: that rug back, the hair was all slipping. Not my fault,
- 1:05:38Speaker 2: the hair was all slipping. So it's a long story
- 1:05:42Speaker 2: that the people involved are not even live anymore. The
- 1:05:44Speaker 2: person ball was not even live anymore. The hair was slipping.
- 1:05:47Speaker 2: John Hayes took that rug apart and put an adhesive.
- 1:05:50Speaker 2: Oh really yeah, he spread an adhesive on the backside.
- 1:05:54Speaker 2: You couldn't get that hair out if he wanted to.
- 1:05:56Speaker 5: Wow.
- 1:05:57Speaker 2: So John Hayes Hayes tax in every studio to tell
- 1:06:00Speaker 2: you what to do. He's got all kinds of little
- 1:06:02Speaker 2: tricks because when you've been in the business that line,
- 1:06:04Speaker 2: people bring you more screwed up stuff, you know. I mean,
- 1:06:06Speaker 2: all you do is deal with people's mistakes.
- 1:06:07Speaker 3: Oh, this, this is This will be an easy one
- 1:06:13Speaker 3: to answer because we've had someone on the podcast. But
- 1:06:15Speaker 3: just so you can remind this person, Phil is asking
- 1:06:17Speaker 3: for an episode on hearing loss. I think we've done
- 1:06:20Speaker 3: a few with Grace from Otopro.
- 1:06:23Speaker 2: Yep, yeah, just go back and findalals. I wish we
- 1:06:25Speaker 2: could think of the number, but we've done two. We've
- 1:06:30Speaker 2: done two with an audiologists about why that's happening to you?
- 1:06:35Speaker 2: Why when you're laying in bed at night you're listening
- 1:06:37Speaker 2: to We keeps Your waken.
- 1:06:42Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 1:06:44Speaker 3: Uh, Brody, I'm gonna direct this one at you because
- 1:06:47Speaker 3: maybe you've seen this show, but a lot of people
- 1:06:49Speaker 3: have been asking if we've watched American primeval on that
- 1:06:52Speaker 3: you know, I did watch, and.
- 1:06:55Speaker 11: There's like some cool historical accuracies in it, but it's
- 1:06:59Speaker 11: also you know Hollywood, like I don't want to give
- 1:07:02Speaker 11: it away to you know, people that haven't seen it,
- 1:07:05Speaker 11: but there's a really stupid scene with wolves attack and
- 1:07:08Speaker 11: like busting through a cabin and trying to attack people,
- 1:07:11Speaker 11: like shit, that would never happen. Yeah, but like the
- 1:07:14Speaker 11: Jim Bridger stuff where he was running the fort, that's
- 1:07:17Speaker 11: all and is running with h Brigham Young like.
- 1:07:21Speaker 4: That's that stuff all happened. It was a cool show.
- 1:07:25Speaker 5: I thought it was good. Cool.
- 1:07:28Speaker 3: I think you gave an update on this, Steve for
- 1:07:30Speaker 3: an episode that maybe hasn't aired yet or it was
- 1:07:31Speaker 3: Trivia or something, but someone's Dakota's asking for a punt
- 1:07:34Speaker 3: gun update because I know you've made some We made
- 1:07:37Speaker 3: some strides in that department.
- 1:07:38Speaker 2: From Dakota punts. We're getting very close to shooting it.
- 1:07:44Speaker 2: We just last week. We're out, but we're working on
- 1:07:47Speaker 2: a kind of a way to you can't mount it, Ridgid,
- 1:07:49Speaker 2: you got it's got to move, so we're working on
- 1:07:51Speaker 2: a mount But yeah, we would have shot it, but
- 1:07:54Speaker 2: We're just having a real streak of bad weather right now.
- 1:07:56Speaker 2: It's just not fun time to be out blowing your
- 1:07:59Speaker 2: hand off trying to shoot your punk gun.
- 1:08:01Speaker 5: Twenty nine below this morning. Yeah, it will warm up.
- 1:08:04Speaker 3: Well, we will do one more. And this is kind
- 1:08:06Speaker 3: of like a very this is a very broad generic question.
- 1:08:08Speaker 3: But hey, it's your birthday, Steve, so I'm gonna put
- 1:08:10Speaker 3: you on the spot in your fifty one years is
- 1:08:13Speaker 3: from Tyler? What is Do you have a favorite hunting memory?
- 1:08:18Speaker 2: No?
- 1:08:18Speaker 3: No, all right, thanks Tyler, do it for Today's.
- 1:08:24Speaker 2: Just the whole package of it. I like a lot.
- 1:08:26Speaker 2: I can't. I have to think about that for a
- 1:08:28Speaker 2: long time. Yeah, it's a tough question. One you talk
- 1:08:31Speaker 2: about a lot with a lot of enthusiasm. Is the
- 1:08:35Speaker 2: youth your season hunt? Oh well yeah, that's what I'm saying,
- 1:08:37Speaker 2: Like I would say that, but that's pretty recent. Yeah, yeah,
- 1:08:42Speaker 2: I like going, I like hunting. I like hunting. Taking
- 1:08:46Speaker 2: the kid's youth to your hunting, but then taking any
- 1:08:50Speaker 2: kinds you know, younger people can't picture because I wouldn't
- 1:08:53Speaker 2: have pictured when I was younger. You just can't, like,
- 1:08:56Speaker 2: I might as well not even say it because you
- 1:08:58Speaker 2: just can't picture it when you get older, if you
- 1:09:00Speaker 2: have kids, and you should, It's just I can't explain
- 1:09:06Speaker 2: it. It just wants to being so much more fun to
- 1:09:07Speaker 2: do stuff with them.
- 1:09:08Speaker 11: Like when I think about me getting my first buck
- 1:09:11Speaker 11: versus my kid getting it's.
- 1:09:13Speaker 4: Like, yeah, no comparison.
- 1:09:16Speaker 2: Yeah, I would rather hunt one day with my kids
- 1:09:18Speaker 2: than like three days without them. It's just more fun. Man.
- 1:09:20Speaker 2: You know, I just like it. But I wouldn't expect
- 1:09:23Speaker 2: anybody to understand that. But like I said, I recommend
- 1:09:25Speaker 2: having kids. If you can, have kids, gives you a
- 1:09:27Speaker 2: good sense of I don't man, gives you good sense
- 1:09:31Speaker 2: of purpose.
- 1:09:33Speaker 5: Cool.
- 1:09:34Speaker 3: Well, I've got one more thing to read before the
- 1:09:35Speaker 3: end of the show about a a call to action
- 1:09:40Speaker 3: for our listeners.
- 1:09:42Speaker 2: Oh scroll now, I gotta get the hang of this
