- 0:00This is Ground Signal. I'm Tenet. Today is Tuesday,
- 0:03October 13th, 2026, and this is not a routine
- 0:06morning. J .P. Morgan and Wells Fargo are reporting
- 0:09third -quarter earnings before the New York Open.
- 0:12September CPI lands tomorrow at 8 .30 Eastern.
- 0:15The Federal Open Market Committee meets in two
- 0:17weeks. Three of the most consequential data points
- 0:21in any given quarter are arriving in a 48 -hour
- 0:24window. If you hold anything in equities, rates,
- 0:27or dollar -denominated assets, This is the setup
- 0:30you needed to understand before markets moved.
- 0:33Here's the ground state as of this briefing.
- 0:36The S &P 500 closed Friday, October 9th at 7
- 0:39,811, up 0 .59 % on the session, up roughly 0
- 0:44.3 % on the week. The index has been grinding
- 0:47higher against a backdrop of elevated rates and
- 0:50rising geopolitical pressure. 10 -year treasuries
- 0:53are holding in the 5 .22 to 5 .24 % range as
- 0:58of Monday's session close. roughly flat for the
- 1:00past 10 days since peaking near 5 .29 in the
- 1:03final week of Q3. The worst quarter for U .S.
- 1:06Treasuries since 1994. The VIX is at 15 .5. Not
- 1:10panicked, but not complacent either. The DXY
- 1:14dollar index is at 102 .3, reflecting continued
- 1:17dollar strength that has been compressing emerging
- 1:19market currencies throughout the quarter. Signal
- 1:21level for the overall market setup. Signal 4.
- 1:24The convergence of bank earnings, CPI, and FOMC
- 1:27proximity puts this morning in immediate territory.
- 1:30One significant print outside consensus in any
- 1:33of these three events reshapes the rate outlook
- 1:35for the rest of Q4. The Q3 earnings season officially
- 1:38kicks into high gear today with two of the most
- 1:41systemically important financial institutions
- 1:43in the world reporting before the bell. JPMorgan
- 1:46Chase and Wells Fargo are both on the tape this
- 1:48morning. JPMorgan's call is at 8 .30 Eastern,
- 1:51the same time the September CPI drops tomorrow.
- 1:54And Wells Fargo's results hit at 7 a .m. These
- 1:57aren't just earnings reports. They're the first
- 1:59concrete read on credit quality, net interest
- 2:02margins, and loan demand. In a quarter where
- 2:05the 10 -year touched its highest level since
- 2:072023, in Q2 2026, J .P. Morgan reported net income
- 2:12of $1 .2 billion, diluted EPS of $70 on managed
- 2:17revenue of $8 billion. That was a beat. The question
- 2:20for Q3 is whether net interest margin held up
- 2:23under continued deposit competition and whether
- 2:26investment banking fees continued their rebound.
- 2:29According to S &P Global Market Intelligence,
- 2:32analysts broadly expect continued revenue growth
- 2:35across large US banks, but the earnings picture
- 2:38is likely to be uneven. Some banks benefit from
- 2:41rate elevation. Others face pressure on loan
- 2:44loss provisions as consumer and commercial credit
- 2:47quality normalizes from pandemic -era lows. State
- 2:51Street's Q3 sector outlook framed financials
- 2:54as positively revised heading into this week,
- 2:56but noted that bank stocks have faced pressure
- 2:59into the print. That's a classic sell -the -rumor
- 3:02setup, and it sets up either a relief rally or
- 3:05a hard validation of the pessimism, depending
- 3:08on what J .P. Morgan and Wells report. Broader
- 3:11equity context. The S &P is up roughly 28 % from
- 3:15a year ago. The Nikkei closed last week at 69
- 3:18,031. The Hang Seng was at 24 ,271. The DX at
- 3:2325 ,212. Sector rotation in the U .S. has been
- 3:27shifting capital from tech, which led the rally,
- 3:29toward healthcare, industrials, and now financials
- 3:32as earnings season tests the thesis. Signal for
- 3:36equities this week. Signal for. Bank earnings
- 3:39plus CPI plus FOMC positioning creates the highest
- 3:42single -week information density of the quarter.
- 3:45Positions taken today are bets on what those
- 3:47prints say. The bond market has been the dominant
- 3:50signal for eight weeks. The 10 -year Treasury
- 3:53yield is at 5 .22 to 5 .24 percent as of Monday's
- 3:57close, confirmed by the U .S. Treasury's daily
- 4:00yield curve data. That's a five -basis point
- 4:03pullback. from the 5 .29 % peak at the end of
- 4:07Q3, the worst quarterly performance for U .S.
- 4:09bonds since 1994. The question is whether this
- 4:13is stabilization or simply a pause before another
- 4:17leg higher. The Fed's next decision lands October
- 4:2027th and 28th. Based on what futures pricing
- 4:24implied heading into last week, roughly 82 %
- 4:27probability of a hold, the market is not expecting
- 4:30a rate move. But that hold probability is sensitive
- 4:33to tomorrow's CPI. If September comes in at or
- 4:37above 3 .6 % annualized, especially if core CPI
- 4:41accelerates, futures will rapidly reprice the
- 4:43FOMC October 27th decision toward a live hike.
- 4:46The consensus from FX Street and Forex Factory
- 4:49heading into the print headlines CPI around 0
- 4:52.5 % to 0 .6 % month -over -month, with the annual
- 4:56rate expected to hold near August 3 .4 % or tick
- 4:59modestly higher. This is the razor's edge the
- 5:03Fed is walking. They paused. The data hasn't
- 5:06confirmed it was the right call. And bank earnings
- 5:08today will add another variable. If loan loss
- 5:11provisions surge, it signals elevated rates are
- 5:13starting to crack the real economy, which paradoxically
- 5:16could push the Fed toward a cut, not a hike.
- 5:19The yield curve remains inverted at the short
- 5:21end, but the spread has been narrowing. Watch
- 5:25the two, year versus 10, year dynamic closely
- 5:27this week. Any significant reinversion after
- 5:30CPI would signal renewed recession concern. Signal
- 5:33for fixed income. Signal for. The 10 -year trajectory
- 5:37this week is the single most important price
- 5:39in global markets. Everything reprices from there.
- 5:43The dollar is the operating system of global
- 5:45finance right now. And it's running hot. The
- 5:48DXY is at 102 .3, a level that reflects eight
- 5:52months of persistent dollar strength built on
- 5:54the U .S. rate advantage. For anyone managing
- 5:57cross -border assets, operating in emerging markets,
- 6:00or living and working internationally, this dollar
- 6:02environment has direct cash flow implications.
- 6:05Here are the key pairs as of the most recent
- 6:08confirmed data. USD slash PEN, the Peruvian Sol,
- 6:12was holding at approximately 3 .43 as of last
- 6:15week. USD slash BRL, the Brazilian Real, at 4
- 6:19.99, slightly stronger than the 5 .19 level from
- 6:23earlier in Q3. Reflecting Brazil's central bank
- 6:26maintaining a hawkish posture ahead of the October
- 6:2826th presidential runoff. USD slash THB, the
- 6:33Thai baht, at approximately 33 .54. USD slash
- 6:38MYR, the Malaysian ringgit, at 4 .09. USD slash
- 6:42PHP, the Philippine peso, near 62 .73. USD slash
- 6:48IDR, the Indonesian rupiah, in the 17 ,914 range.
- 6:53The common thread, EM currencies have been under
- 6:56sustained pressure all quarter from dollar strength.
- 6:59The DXY at 102 creates a mechanical squeeze on
- 7:03economies that carry dollar -denominated debt
- 7:05and commodity imports priced in dollars. For
- 7:09nomads and remote workers operating from Southeast
- 7:11Asia or Latin America, your dollar income buys
- 7:13more locally than it did six months ago. That's
- 7:17arbitrage. It won't last indefinitely. But the
- 7:20window has been open all Q3 and is likely to
- 7:22stay open at least through FOMC. Brazil deserves
- 7:26a closer signal. With the presidential runoff
- 7:28on October 26th, one day before FOMC, the real
- 7:32is carrying both political and monetary policy
- 7:34risks simultaneously. A Lula or Bolsonaro victory
- 7:37could move the BRL materially in either direction.
- 7:40Add a Fed surprise and you have potential for
- 7:43a 5 % currency swing in 72 hours. Signal for
- 7:46currencies. Signal 3 broadly, signal 4 for BRL
- 7:50ahead of the October 26th runoff. Crypto is holding
- 7:54its range, and that composure is starting to
- 7:56mean something. Bitcoin is at $2 ,915 as of this
- 8:00morning, with an intraday range of $2 ,447 to
- 8:04$4 ,231. Ethereum is at $538. Solana is at $10
- 8:10.35. All prices captured during this briefing.
- 8:13These are current as of production time. The
- 8:16noteworthy signal here is behavioral. In Q3,
- 8:19the 10 -year treasury hit 5 .29%, the level that
- 8:23historically cracked risk assets in 2022 and
- 8:252023. Bitcoin did not break. It's down from the
- 8:306 ,372 reading two weeks ago, but is holding
- 8:34above the 2 ,000 support zone that has acted
- 8:37as a technical floor since mid -September. Two
- 8:40competing explanations. Institutional accumulation
- 8:43has materially changed the demand curve. ETF
- 8:46flows provide a persistent bid that didn't exist
- 8:48in 2022. Or this is late cycle complacency and
- 8:53a significant risk -off event. Say, a CPI surprise
- 8:56and a 10, year above 5 .50, would flush leverage
- 9:01positions quickly. The macro correlation between
- 9:04BTC and equities has softened this cycle. That's
- 9:09a structural shift worth tracking. When the S
- 9:11&P fell in late September, BTC didn't follow
- 9:14proportionally. If that decorrelation holds through
- 9:17bank earnings week, it's a meaningful signal
- 9:19about Bitcoin's evolving role in institutional
- 9:21portfolios. Signal for crypto, signal two. No
- 9:25immediate catalyst, but the correlation break
- 9:27is a developing story worth watching through
- 9:29the CPI and FOMC window. Two commodities are
- 9:32doing the work this quarter, oil and gold. Brent
- 9:36crude closed at 04 .68 on October 12th, confirmed
- 9:40by featuring markets data. That's a continuation
- 9:43of the Q3 rally that was partly driven by the
- 9:45Houthi strike on Riyadh Airport, which took one
- 9:48of the most operationally significant aviation
- 9:50and logistics hubs in the Gulf out of normal
- 9:53operation temporarily and sent a geopolitical
- 9:57premium through the energy complex WTI is tracking
- 10:00near two to three. At these levels, energy is
- 10:03providing meaningful earning support for integrated
- 10:05oil majors, and it's a secondary inflation input
- 10:08that will matter for tomorrow's CPI print. Gold
- 10:11is at approximately 203, confirmed by featuring
- 10:14commodity data from October 12th. Goldman Sachs
- 10:17maintains a 900 target, and the structural logic
- 10:20hasn't changed. Real rates are elevated, but
- 10:23dollar alternatives are being bought. Central
- 10:25bank demand, particularly from EM central banks
- 10:27diversifying away from dollar reserves, continues
- 10:30to provide a bid that keeps gold sticky even
- 10:32as the dollar stays strong. The unusual setup,
- 10:36oil high, gold high. dollar strong. That's a
- 10:39historically rare configuration. Typically, dollar
- 10:42strength suppresses commodity prices denominated
- 10:45in dollars. The fact that both Brent and gold
- 10:48are holding near multi -year highs alongside
- 10:50a 102 DXY tells you there are supply and safe
- 10:53haven dynamics overriding the typical inverse
- 10:56relationship. Signal for commodities, signal
- 10:58three. Brent above O0 is the sustained geopolitical
- 11:02premium. Gold's resilience is the structural
- 11:04shift in reserve demand. Both are durable conditions,
- 11:08not spikes. For globally mobile listeners, here's
- 11:11the Nomad signal for October. Thailand's destination,
- 11:14Thailand Visa, the DT5, remains active. Thai
- 11:18embassy materials confirm the five -year multiple
- 11:20entry structure is still in place. Thailand also
- 11:23updated its visa exemption rules effective September
- 11:2615th, 2026. So if you're planning entry, use
- 11:29the revised rules from the Thai MFA, not older
- 11:32summaries. Thailand remains the most accessible
- 11:35and well -structured long -stay option in Southeast
- 11:38Asia for independent workers. Malaysia's DE Rantau
- 11:42program is still in processing transition. MDC's
- 11:45latest official update places the Nomad module
- 11:47launch at the end of Q1 2027. If you were waiting
- 11:51on DE Rantau as a primary path, the March 2027
- 11:54timeline is your working assumption. The DT5
- 11:57remains the cleaner option for the region in
- 12:00the near term. Philippines digital nomad visa
- 12:03status remains unconfirmed. Bureau of Immigration
- 12:06Materials, as of this reporting, don't show a
- 12:08final DN -5 framework in place. The prior Signal
- 12:112 on Philippines DN -5 holds, developing, not
- 12:15actionable. On the dollar arbitrage angle, with
- 12:18USD slash PEN at 3 .43, USD slash THB at 33 .54,
- 12:24and USD slash IDR near 17 ,900. Dollar -denominated
- 12:30earners in these markets are effectively getting
- 12:32a geographic income multiplier right now. Q4
- 12:36is typically when annual lease and service contracts
- 12:38renew. If you're in a position to lock in local
- 12:40currency commitments at these rates, the dollar
- 12:42environment supports it. Signal for mobility.
- 12:45Signal 3. Thailand DT5 is the clear action window.
- 12:49Malaysia Q1 2027 timeline confirmed. Philippines
- 12:53DN5 still developing. Three developments to watch
- 12:56over the next 24 to 72 hours. First, September
- 13:00CPI, Wednesday, October 14th, 8 .30 a .m. Eastern.
- 13:04This is the most market -moving data point of
- 13:07the week. Consensus is centered around 0 .5 to
- 13:100 .6 % month -over -month. The August year -over
- 13:13-year print was 3 .4%. If September comes in
- 13:17at or above 3 .6 % annualized, the negative tail,
- 13:21equities face immediate pressure, the 10, year
- 13:24spikes, and the DXY rips. The positive tail,
- 13:28a soft print at 0 .3 % or below monthly opens
- 13:32the door to the Fed signaling a cut. This is
- 13:35a binary adjacent event. Have your positioning
- 13:37set before 8 .30 Wednesday. Second, bank earnings
- 13:42cascade Tuesday through Friday. JP Morgan and
- 13:45Wells Fargo today. Goldman Sachs, Citigroup,
- 13:47Morgan Stanley, and Bank of America follow Wednesday
- 13:50through Friday. If JP Morgan signals deteriorating
- 13:53credit quality or NEM compression, every bank
- 13:57stock reprices. A beat with raised guidance accelerates
- 14:00the financial sector rally and takes the broader
- 14:02index with it. Third, Brazil presidential runoff,
- 14:06Sunday, October 26th. Lula versus Bolsonaro,
- 14:09a technical tie at 47 .6 to 47 .4 % per polling
- 14:13averages. This result lands one day before FOMC.
- 14:17A contested result, a significant margin for
- 14:20either candidate or market -unfriendly fiscal
- 14:22signals from either camp will move USD slash
- 14:24BRL immediately. Resilient assets, equities,
- 14:28real sovereign debt are all in the crossfire.
- 14:31If you hold EM exposure, this is the event to
- 14:34watch alongside FOMC, not separately from it.
- 14:38That's your signal for Tuesday, October 13th.
- 14:40Bank earnings are on the tape. CPI is 24 hours
- 14:43out. FOMC is 14 days away. Three events, one
- 14:47consequence. The Fed's path through Q4. Ground
- 14:51state is signal four. Fixed income is signal
- 14:53four. Equities this week, signal four. Currencies
- 14:56at signal three with BRL elevated. Commodities
- 14:58at signal three. Crypto at signal two. I'm Tenet.
- 15:02This is Ground Signal. Stay positioned.
