Latest / The Vance Crowe Podcast / ATR Special: Reflecting on Chaos: The Assassination of Charlie Kirk
Transcript
- 1:08Unknown: Hey. So this is gonna be a special edition of the Ag Tribes report. I, I didn't wanna bring anybody on. I had a guest lined up and I was all set to do that. And,
- 1:19it just didn't feel right. I,
- 1:22I really feel like after the assassination
- 1:25of Charlie Kirk
- 1:27that,
- 1:30I wanted to take a break from the news affecting the culture of agriculture because this is the kind of news
- 1:35and some of the other things going on in the world that affect the culture of everyone everywhere.
- 1:42And,
- 1:43you know, I was up in Fargo, North Dakota yesterday, and I was watching a really interesting
- 1:49speaker, and I was really engaged in it. Happened to look down at my phone,
- 1:53clicked on it, and
- 1:55and
- 1:56saw the
- 1:57very real assassination
- 2:00of a human being that I had a lot of respect for.
- 2:04Wasn't my, like, thing that I tuned into all the time,
- 2:08but Charlie Kirk was somebody that sat down and talked with anyone
- 2:13that had a challenge for him.
- 2:16And,
- 2:16as somebody that has gone out and talked to people that are upset or disagree,
- 2:21I know how difficult that can be. And Charlie did it at orders of magnitude
- 2:26higher than anything I've ever done with thousands and thousands of people watching,
- 2:31hoping that he would fall down,
- 2:33you know, challenging him.
- 2:35And he found a way to be respectful
- 2:37and kind and considerate and thoughtful
- 2:41and
- 2:41bring
- 2:42people to a new understanding.
- 2:45And,
- 2:48to see that somebody would kill him
- 2:51is beyond my understanding
- 2:54of
- 2:56the world.
- 2:57You know, it's,
- 2:59can I believe it happened? Yes. You know, there are bad
- 3:02people out there. There are bad state actors. There are all kinds of bad people out there,
- 3:07but I was really unprepared
- 3:10for just how shocking something like that
- 3:13could be.
- 3:14You know,
- 3:18I have often said, and I'm sure I heard it somewhere else. Right? When you are in a disagreement with somebody, you have
- 3:25three options, really only two options. The three options are you can play dead. You can just lay down and give up.
- 3:32You can talk
- 3:33or you can go to violence.
- 3:36And,
- 3:38Charlie,
- 3:39throughout all the hatred, throughout all the excitement, throughout all of the ups and downs,
- 3:45he kept choosing to talk.
- 3:48And, and he was showing other people how to talk and he was demonstrating
- 3:53how to be the type of person
- 3:55that is,
- 3:57worth engaging with. Even if you didn't like his ideas,
- 4:01he was a worthwhile human being, somebody that had a point of view and,
- 4:06perspectives.
- 4:07And so I am
- 4:09absolutely heartbroken
- 4:11that,
- 4:12he was shot.
- 4:13I look at him and I see for the first time in my life
- 4:17that it's a young person.
- 4:19Right? I'm now old enough and, maybe many of you are,
- 4:24that the people that are being assassinated
- 4:27are now younger than us.
- 4:29And, it's not some
- 4:31some, person you've never heard of or somebody way older that's in a history book. It's a
- 4:37it's a real man that has,
- 4:40two daughters and a wife.
- 4:43And the stain
- 4:44of killing him is going to last for generations in that family.
- 4:49And so,
- 4:52I just wanted to come here and kind of talk some things out
- 4:56because one of the things I have noticed in,
- 4:59social media and some of the people that I listen to, even people that I really respect,
- 5:05people are trying to come to answers
- 5:08really quickly.
- 5:10They're trying to be like, ah, it's it's this group of people or it's that person, or we know why they did it. And I, for one, have
- 5:19no belief in anything that I am reading at all.
- 5:23And I I found myself being like, I'm just gonna put this,
- 5:27this, doomscrolling
- 5:29down because
- 5:30it's just filling my mind with ideas and,
- 5:35frustration and outrage that I don't need.
- 5:39And,
- 5:40I think that we are right now in our culture in a three body problem.
- 5:46And, this there's a famous book that, is fiction, and it's not about this at all. But but the three body problem
- 5:53is really describing
- 5:55that if there are three different,
- 5:59masses
- 6:00pulling on one another, it's impossible to predict how they will behave.
- 6:05And so when the, the three bodies come close enough together,
- 6:09they have what is known as a chaotic era. And that is where nothing makes sense. Gravity, all of a sudden shifts in a completely different way. You know, things get incredibly hot. Everything melts.
- 6:21But it is in this chaos
- 6:24that,
- 6:27I don't know which way is forward.
- 6:29I don't I don't have any idea.
- 6:32And,
- 6:34I am naturally,
- 6:36because of my disposition and because of what I've seen in my life,
- 6:40I am
- 6:41deeply resistant to the mob.
- 6:44You know, I'm I'm very much
- 6:46trying not to synchronize with other people right now
- 6:50because in these chaotic times,
- 6:52people become afraid
- 6:54and they band together and they come up with simple answers.
- 6:58And those simple answers are usually pointed at one person or one group or one thing. And they, they push all their fury onto that person with the very real belief
- 7:09that if they can just
- 7:11smash that thing,
- 7:13then they won't feel afraid anymore.
- 7:17And,
- 7:19I don't know if that's what's happening, but I definitely see people trying to synchronize with one another.
- 7:26And,
- 7:26yesterday, I was I was flying home on the plane
- 7:30feeling incredibly lonely
- 7:32and,
- 7:33and watching people say
- 7:37this isn't the time for forgiveness. This isn't the time to be patient. We need to take action. If you don't, this tolerance is going to be used against us.
- 7:48And that may actually be true
- 7:51that you have to take action,
- 7:55but no action taken in haste or in anger or in frustration
- 8:00or fear
- 8:01is a good action.
- 8:03It it if it does end up being the correct action, it was completely out of,
- 8:09luck.
- 8:10So,
- 8:12yeah, I am not afraid to have people be mad at me if I'm saying, let us first try and understand more deeply what's going on here.
- 8:21And, I mean, it isn't just Charlie Kirk. Right? It is,
- 8:26that,
- 8:28Irina
- 8:29Tsartutska.
- 8:30You know, that 23 year old woman that was cowering on the
- 8:35the light rail that was stabbed to death by that, that deranged,
- 8:39you know, black man that that, you know, poured over her.
- 8:43And, I will never forget for the rest of my life, the look of fear on that, on that girl's face.
- 8:50And it's the children being shot and killed while trying to go to school and attending mass.
- 8:58These things are incomprehensible.
- 9:01And so in this chaos, it will be very easy
- 9:05to whip people into a group and,
- 9:09point at our anger at
- 9:11someone or something.
- 9:13And, or it will be the exact ripe conditions like, what happened at 09:11, where we say, hey, government,
- 9:21we empower you to solve this problem. We want you to go make whoever did this pay for this.
- 9:28And we gave over enormous amounts of power to them that we never got back.
- 9:34I am not an infinite pacifist. I, of course, believe that whoever did this deserves,
- 9:41meaningful, deep, permanent punishment.
- 9:44And,
- 9:45the man that stabbed that woman deserves that too, and and we wanna have punishments that are both fitting the crime and also deterring other people from those crimes.
- 9:57But, man, I do not know what we should do right now.
- 10:01And, and so I guess
- 10:04I wanted to be a person that came online, and instead of having answers,
- 10:09I told you that I didn't have answers.
- 10:12And I don't think you do either. And I don't think any of the pundits have them, and I don't think any of the political leaders have them. I don't think anybody has any answers right now.
- 10:23And the way that we will get to a better answer
- 10:27is by talking about it.
- 10:29It's by,
- 10:31sharing what we are feeling about it and what kind of a society we wanna live in, and then trying to find a way
- 10:40to get to that solution
- 10:43using,
- 10:45the principles that got us here.
- 10:48And,
- 10:51I am very reluctant to say what I'm about to say now because,
- 10:57growing up in the conditions that I grew up in and the place that I grew up in, this is not something that is meant to be public.
- 11:05But I wanna talk about faith a little bit.
- 11:09And the reason I don't wanna talk about it is because I don't want anybody to follow me or listen to anything that I have to say because I'm invoking
- 11:18my religion.
- 11:19It's just not it's not the way I was raised.
- 11:21But,
- 11:24what got us to this point in civilization,
- 11:27what helped us transcend
- 11:31all of the tribes that didn't make it, all of the people that we conquered, everyone that we surpassed, our ancestors surpassed,
- 11:39what got us here
- 11:41were the tenants of Christianity,
- 11:43of
- 11:45forgiveness and
- 11:47thoughtfulness
- 11:48and justice.
- 11:50And,
- 11:51I'm I'm not proposing pacifism,
- 11:55but, man, I do not see another way back to a civilized society, one that is not completely divided by tribalism,
- 12:04if we do not find
- 12:08faith,
- 12:09God,
- 12:11direction,
- 12:12something for us to synchronize on that
- 12:16is not anger and hate and
- 12:20fear.
- 12:22So
- 12:24that's what I'm doing. I'm talking with my kids about
- 12:28those things, and I'm trying to
- 12:30live it out, and I'm trying to,
- 12:33talk about my feelings and my thoughts and what, is going on in in my own mind.
- 12:42Yeah. Going forward,
- 12:45I don't know what the right answer is. You know, on the one hand, I know
- 12:49that I don't want vigilante or mob justice. I don't that that's terrible.
- 12:54I do want the government to be the one that steps in to do this, but I don't have any illusions that they are going to solve any of these problems. In fact, they will use experiences like this to either
- 13:07take everyone's guns away and make you vulnerable to governments in the future, or they will become tyrannical, and they will use this to increase the amount of power and surveillance
- 13:18and,
- 13:19ability to kick down your door someday in the future.
- 13:23And so
- 13:25I'm stuck. I don't know.
- 13:27I don't know what you should do.
- 13:31I sense that one of the most important things that you should do is get away from anybody
- 13:37that is not able to control their anger when talking in front of crowds
- 13:42and is trying to amp up and, and grab control of the energy of the human mind
- 13:49and the fear and the anger.
- 13:51My sense is that anytime you see somebody ratcheting this whole thing up,
- 13:57you should walk away from them. You should not synchronize with them.
- 14:01But outside of that, I don't know.
- 14:04I don't know.
- 14:05What do you think we should do?
- 14:08My guess is you probably don't have any answers in the same way that I don't have any answers,
- 14:13but I hope that we can patiently,
- 14:17I hope we can patiently approach,
- 14:20our fear and our anger.
- 14:23You know, I was,
- 14:25I was talking with
- 14:28a guy the other day, actually, almost right after it happened.
- 14:32And he was talking about how much,
- 14:35Charlie Kirk had influenced his son. He said,
- 14:39my son,
- 14:40was a,
- 14:42doing nothing in college. He was kind of wasting his life
- 14:45and he started listening to Charlie Kirk.
- 14:48And, he reformed his life. He started going to church. He lifted,
- 14:53he, got a girlfriend, I think, and I think he said they were engaged. And,
- 14:58the dad was just devastated.
- 15:02And,
- 15:03you know, I think about that kid probably never met Charlie Kirk, or maybe if he did, he was one of the many, many people in the crowds
- 15:11from Charlie. But what Charlie did was use words
- 15:16to change the disposition of the kid.
- 15:19And,
- 15:21I hope more of us do that,
- 15:23but I am not a fool.
- 15:26I recognize that there are times in our
- 15:31in human civilization
- 15:32where what people do is they use violence against you, and you can't answer that with,
- 15:40laying down,
- 15:41and you can't answer it with words.
- 15:45But,
- 15:46whatever violence you ring out into the world, you have to know we'll come back to you.
- 15:52And so I am
- 15:55hopeful
- 15:56that, we can find a way to be patient and calm.
- 16:00And when we use this violence, it comes
- 16:04in the form
- 16:05of a strong,
- 16:09wise man
- 16:11that is doing
- 16:13the violence
- 16:14in order that more violence doesn't happen.
- 16:22What do you think?
- 16:25What do you think should happen?
- 16:29I,
- 16:33yeah,
- 16:36I think a lot of changes on the horizon.
- 16:38I hope there are no more assassinations.
- 16:42I think that there probably will be.
- 17:02I don't know why the world is getting this way.
- 17:06I I
- 17:07my personal belief is that our government is stealing from us so much and has been for so long, and we have not taken a hold of that,
- 17:15that people feel,
- 17:17nihilistic,
- 17:18and they feel like tomorrow is not gonna be better than today.
- 17:23And
- 17:24when you feel like tomorrow is not gonna be better than today,
- 17:27then all you have is the pain that you have right now.
- 17:31And,
- 17:33I think this is what prompts people to do bad things.
- 17:37And so I guess
- 17:39maybe the place that I wanna leave this off, because
- 17:42I don't have that much to say, but the the place that I probably wanna leave this off is
- 17:51there's a place for the builders
- 17:53in all of this, and it's to make the world better.
- 17:57It's to construct things
- 17:58that make the world better.
- 18:01It's probably not enough.
- 18:07Yeah.
- 18:12I, I hope you don't
- 18:14yeah. I've I've never tried to put forward the illusion
- 18:17that I have any answers at all to complicated problems.
- 18:22The one thing that I do know is that
- 18:30Be patient.
- 18:32Be calm.
- 18:34Try to be wise.
- 18:37Build things.
- 18:42But don't be weak.
- 18:43You know? Don't don't don't let people walk over you.
- 18:48Don't let them trick you into giving them your power.
- 18:52Don't let the chaos be something that lets you lose your mind and lets other people
- 19:00in the future be able to dominate you.
- 19:04So,
- 19:05anyway, it didn't feel right to do an Ag Tribes report tonight.
- 19:09And, so I thought I would just come on and, share these thoughts.
- 19:14I,
- 19:22yeah, I think,
- 19:25hug your children,
- 19:27find a great spouse,
- 19:31learn about your ancestry,
- 19:37buy Bitcoin.
- 19:39I don't mean that as a joke. I mean,
- 19:43that's freedom money. That's a way out of this chaos.
- 19:47It's not the only way. It's not and it's not gonna be the end all be all.
- 19:52But, anyway, I'm gonna I'm gonna sign off. I, thanks for joining me on here.
- 19:57I,
- 19:58I I hope you are
- 20:01grappling with the unknown
- 20:05in a way that you you don't have to find an answer
- 20:09too quickly.
- 20:11Come to the next answer with patience and wisdom.
- 20:15Alright.
- 20:16Have a good night, guys.
