- 0:12Hello friends. It is Sean.
- 0:14Here it is Tuesday, it is the 24th of October.
- 0:19And hello, good to have your company.
- 0:22That's right, you and me, we are taking a moment out of our day.
- 0:26Thank you for joining me as we are going to hear the next
- 0:30chapter of what is going on. Paul has been dragged before the
- 0:34Roman officials. He's about to get whipped and he
- 0:38says, oh, you can't do this. You realize I'm a Roman citizen,
- 0:41don't you? And all of a sudden they stopped
- 0:43dead in their tracks, unsure what to do.
- 0:45So they get in all of the Jewish authorities to try and work out
- 0:49what the commotion is all about. And that's where we'll pick up
- 0:54our story today. Holy Spirit, come as we hear
- 0:58these words boldly proclaimed by your servant Paul.
- 1:04Inspire us. May we hear your words and your
- 1:08truth. Well friends, let us put down
- 1:14the busyness, put down all the plans and thoughts that are
- 1:17bouncing around, and hear God's message to us in these words
- 1:22reading together. Acts Chapter 23 gazing intently
- 1:37at the High Council, Paul began. Brothers, I have always lived
- 1:42before God with a clear conscience.
- 1:45Instantly Ananias the priest commanded those close to Paul to
- 1:48slap him on the mouth. But Paul said to him, God will
- 1:52slap you, You corrupt hypocrite. What kind of judge are you to
- 1:56break the law yourself by? Ordering me?
- 1:57Struck like that, though, standing near, Paul said to him,
- 2:02Do you dare insult God's high priest?
- 2:05I'm sorry brothers, I didn't realize he was the high priest,
- 2:09Paul replied. For the scriptures say you must
- 2:12not speak evil of any of your rulers.
- 2:15Paul realized that some members of the High Council were
- 2:18Sadducees and some were Pharisees.
- 2:20So he shouted, Brothers, I am a Pharisee, as were my ancestors,
- 2:27and I am on trial because my hope is in the resurrection of
- 2:30the dead. This divided the council, the
- 2:34Pharisees, against the Sadducees.
- 2:36For the Sadducees say there is no resurrection or angels or
- 2:40spirits. But the Pharisees believe in all
- 2:43three of these. So there was a great uproar.
- 2:46Some of the teachers of religious law who were Pharisees
- 2:49jumped up and began to argue forcefully.
- 2:52We see nothing wrong with him, they shouted.
- 2:54Perhaps a spirit or an Angel spoke to him as the conflict
- 2:58grew more violent. The commander was afraid they
- 3:01would tear Paul apart, so he ordered his soldiers to go and
- 3:05rescue him by force and take him back to the fortress.
- 3:09That night the Lord appeared to Paul and said, Be encouraged,
- 3:12Paul, just as you have been a witness to me here in Jerusalem,
- 3:17you must preach the good news in Rome as well.
- 3:21The next morning a group of Jews got together and bound
- 3:25themselves with an oath not to eat or drink until they had
- 3:28killed Paul. There were more than 40 of them
- 3:32in the conspiracy. They went to the leading priests
- 3:34and elders and told them we have bound ourselves with an oath to
- 3:38eat nothing until we have killed Paul.
- 3:42So you and the High Council should ask the commander to
- 3:45bring Paul back to the council again.
- 3:48Pretend you want to examine his case more fully.
- 3:51We will kill him on the way. But Paul's nephew, his sister's
- 3:55son, heard of their plan and went to the fortress and told
- 3:59Paul. Paul called for one of the Roman
- 4:01officers and said, take this young man to the commander.
- 4:05He has something important to tell him.
- 4:07So the officer did, explaining Paul.
- 4:10The prisoner called me over and asked me to bring this young man
- 4:14to you because he has something to tell you.
- 4:17The commander took his hand, led him aside, and asked what is it
- 4:22you want to tell me? Paul's nephew told him some Jews
- 4:27are going to ask you to bring Paul before the High Council
- 4:30tomorrow, pretending they want to get some more information.
- 4:33But don't do it. There are more than 40 men
- 4:36hiding along the way, ready to ambush him.
- 4:38They have vowed not to eat or drink anything until they have
- 4:42killed him. They are ready now, just waiting
- 4:45for your consent. Don't let anyone know you told
- 4:49me this, the commander warned the young man.
- 4:53Then the commander called two of his officers and ordered get 200
- 4:57soldiers ready to leave for Cesaria at 9:00 tonight.
- 5:02Also take 200 spear men and 70 mounted troops, provide horses
- 5:07for Paul to ride and get him safely to Governor Felix.
- 5:12Then he wrote this letter to the Governor from Claudius Lyceus to
- 5:18His Excellency Governor Felix. Greetings.
- 5:22This man was seized by some Jews and they were about to kill him
- 5:26when I arrived with the troops. When I learned that he was a
- 5:29Roman citizen, I removed him to safety.
- 5:32Then I took him to their High Council to try to learn the
- 5:34basis of the accusations against him.
- 5:37I soon discovered the charge was something regarding their
- 5:40religious law, certainly nothing worthy of imprisonment or death.
- 5:44But when I was informed of a plot to kill him, I immediately
- 5:48sent him on to you. I've told his accusers to bring
- 5:51their charges before you. So that night, as ordered, the
- 5:56soldiers took Paul as far as Antipatris.
- 6:00They returned to the fortress the next morning while the
- 6:03mounted troops took him on to Seiseria.
- 6:06When they arrived in Seiseria, they presented Paul and the
- 6:09letter to Governor Felix. He read it and then asked Paul
- 6:13what province he was from. Cecilia.
- 6:16Paul answered. I will hear your case myself
- 6:20when your accusers arrive, the governor told him.
- 6:23Then the governor ordered him kept in the prison at Herod's
- 6:27headquarters. Jesus, following.
- 6:39You can be a bit of a roller coaster sometimes.
- 6:41We can feel so empowered and emboldened and ready to speak
- 6:47boldly, and then we can just want to shut our mouths and
- 6:51stand very quietly in the corner.
- 6:55Sometimes we will sing with bold voices, and other times we will
- 7:00just stand confused, not knowing how to follow you in a given
- 7:04situation. I just pray for your wisdom and
- 7:08your spirits guidance as we try to navigate this Christian life,
- 7:13just as we hear Paul navigating his life with all the twists and
- 7:17turns that he faced. Lord, I pray that you would use
- 7:21us mightily and as you use us, that it would be your spirit
- 7:26that speaks through us, and it would be your love that is
- 7:30shared by us and your forgiveness that is rendered via
- 7:35us. You are a wonderful God with so
- 7:40much grace and a wonderful story of inclusion and love and
- 7:46acceptance to share with the world.
- 7:49I just pray that your will be done here as it is in heaven.
- 7:55We pray all these things in your name, Jesus.
- 7:58Amen.
