- 0:39Today we are back in the book of Ugandan folklore written down by
- 0:42Rosetta Baskerville. Today we have three stories.
- 0:46The first one asks the question of who is right.
- 0:49The second is about why dogs and leopards dislike each other, and
- 0:53the third is why monkeys and leopards don't get along.
- 0:57Leopards don't seem to like anybody.
- 0:58Huh. OK, let's begin getting even.
- 1:03In Gomba there was a battle going on and around the village
- 1:07of Gomba. In the village there was a lame
- 1:10man who had never walked. Every morning he was carried out
- 1:13into the sunny courtyard, and every evening he was carried
- 1:16back into his house. But the battle was raging, and
- 1:19no one remembered the lame man. As he lay in his house he saw
- 1:24the blind man passing by, and a sudden thought struck him.
- 1:27He called to the blind man. Come here, my friend, I have
- 1:31something important to tell you. The blind man groped his way
- 1:34with his long stick till he stood before the lame man and he
- 1:37said, Listen my friend, no one has remembered us during the
- 1:41battle and assuredly we shall die, you who are blind and I who
- 1:46am lame. But I have a plan take me on
- 1:49your back and we will escape from the village.
- 1:53I will be eyes for you and you shall be feet for me.
- 1:57The blind man agreed to the plan and hoisted the lame man on his
- 1:59back and they escaped from Gomba.
- 2:03When they reached safety the blind man said give me a reward
- 2:06for I have saved your life. But the lame man said not so it
- 2:11is I who saved yours. They spoke hot and angry words
- 2:15to each other, and at last they decided to take the case to the
- 2:18chief's counsel. But when the chief heard it, he
- 2:21said there is no case. The lame man was eyes to the
- 2:25blind and the blind man was feet to the lame.
- 2:28Both have saved their lives, which in itself is a great
- 2:31reward. The words are finished.
- 2:36And now this has become a proverb in Uganda.
- 2:39When two men quarrel, both of them say that they are in the
- 2:41right or in the wrong. The people say it is a case of
- 2:46the quits of Gomba. The end.
- 3:10OK, And the second story, the dog and the leopard.
- 3:14Once Upon a time a leopard who had several Cubs hired a dog to
- 3:17be a nurse to them, but she was very unkind to the dog, who was
- 3:21always miserable. The dog was always thin and
- 3:25hungry. She only ate what was leftover
- 3:27when the leopard and her Cubs had finished a meal, and that
- 3:30was never much. One day when the leopard was out
- 3:34visiting, the dog was left at home with the Cubs, and she
- 3:37found some bones in the corner and fell upon them ravenously.
- 3:41One of the Cubs crept up to look, and a bone hit him in the
- 3:44eye and put that eye out. When the dog saw what she had
- 3:48done, she was very frightened and ran away into the forest.
- 3:52She ran until she came to the house for an old wizard, and
- 3:55then she thought, I will go and have my fortune told.
- 3:58So she went into the house and told the wizard what had
- 4:00happened. Now the old wizard told fortunes
- 4:04by cards, and his cards were bits of Buffalo hides sewn over
- 4:08with cowry shells and beads. He got them out of a goatskin
- 4:11bag and was just going to tell the dog's fortune when he saw
- 4:14the leopard coming down the forest path.
- 4:16And he whispered to the dog, There is a leopard coming.
- 4:20Climb into that basket which hangs from the roof and lie very
- 4:24still. So the dog climbed into the
- 4:28basket in which the wizard kept the bananas he was ripening for
- 4:31beer and lay quietly down. In a few minutes the leopard
- 4:35arrived and poured out her storage to the wizard.
- 4:39Tell my fortune, she said, that I may know if I shall catch my
- 4:42enemy. The wizard took out the cards
- 4:45and spoke. You will catch your enemy in the
- 4:47spring rains. If she goes out in the rain, you
- 4:50will catch her in the sunshine. She will be safe.
- 4:53The rain will be her downfall. I speak to those that are above.
- 4:58I speak to those who that are below.
- 5:00Let her who has ears hear, let her who hears understand.
- 5:06The leopard thanked the wizard and gave him a beautiful white
- 5:08hen as a present and went away home to her Cubs.
- 5:12When the dog came down from the basket, the wizard asked did you
- 5:16understand my warning? And the dog said, I understood,
- 5:19Sir, I will never go out in the rain.
- 5:23The months passed, and one day when the dog was headed out in
- 5:26the forest, a heavy shower came on.
- 5:28The spring rains had begun. The dog ran in the direction of
- 5:32home, but suddenly she saw an anthill by the side of the road
- 5:35in which ants were beginning to fly.
- 5:38The dog stopped for a moment to eat a few, and then, as the
- 5:42succulent creatures poured out of the anthill, she lapped them
- 5:45up with her tongue and forgot all about the wizard's warning
- 5:48and did not see the leopard creeping down the path.
- 5:51The leopards sprang upon the dog and killed her.
- 5:54And from that day leopards and dogs are enemies, and a constant
- 5:57battle rages between the tribes. For the leopards remember how
- 6:00the dog blinded the cub, and the dogs remember the vengeance of
- 6:03the mother leopard. In the spring reigns The End.
- 6:28OK, and the third story, the leopard, the hare and the
- 6:31monkey. Once Upon a time a leopard and a
- 6:35hare live together in one house. One day the leopard said, let us
- 6:40go to the village and steal goats.
- 6:42The hare did not want to steal a goat, but he wanted the leopard
- 6:45to go and bring some meat. So he thought of a trick, and
- 6:48agreed to what the leopard had said.
- 6:51They started out in opposite directions, but the hare soon
- 6:53doubled back and followed the leopard, who crept up the
- 6:56hillside towards a goat which was grazing by itself, and
- 6:59sprang upon it. Then the hare shouted, and the
- 7:03leopard, thinking the goat herds had seen him drop the goat and
- 7:06ran away. The hare dragged the goat under
- 7:09some bushes, and after waiting till all was safe and quiet,
- 7:12took it home. The leopard was very surprised
- 7:16and rather sulky. When the meat was nearly cooked,
- 7:19the hare went outside of the house and shouted.
- 7:22The leopard thought the herdsmen had followed them, and he dashed
- 7:24out and fled the forest, and did not return until the morning.
- 7:29By that time the hare had eaten up all the meat, but he told the
- 7:32leopard that the herdsmen had come and taken it all away.
- 7:36This happened several times till the monkey, who was watching
- 7:39them, till the leopard of the hare's trick.
- 7:41And that evening, instead of running to the forest, he only
- 7:44ran a little way and came back. And he found the hare just
- 7:47sitting down to the feast. Although he was very frightened,
- 7:51the hare managed to slip past the leopard and jumped into an
- 7:54anthill which had a large hole at the top.
- 7:57He crouched down, was just out of the reach of the leopard's
- 8:00paw. The ants make their home in the
- 8:02very hard red earth so that no storms or rink can wash it away.
- 8:07And the leopard knew better than to risk breaking all his claws
- 8:09trying to dig out the hair. So he shouted, Foolish creature,
- 8:14I will fill up the hole with fire and burn you inside of it.
- 8:18Do not think you shall escape my vengeance, he called to a crow
- 8:22who was sitting in a tree nearby.
- 8:24Come and guard my prisoner while I collect firewood.
- 8:28But the crow never does anything for anyone.
- 8:30He is too disagreeable, and besides, he did not see why the
- 8:34hair should be burnt in the anthill.
- 8:36So he answered, I can't sit in the sun.
- 8:39The dust gets into my throat and makes me hoarse.
- 8:42I can't guard your prisoner. Go find somebody else.
- 8:47Just then the monkey who had told the leopard of the hair's
- 8:49trick came along. Oh, my dear friend, said the
- 8:52leopard, Come and guard the wicked hare who you help me
- 8:56catch. I'm going to burn him in the
- 8:57anthill. So the monkey sat on top of the
- 9:01anthole while the leopard went to collect firewood.
- 9:05As the monkey sat there, he heard the hare munching
- 9:07something. What are you eating?
- 9:10He asked. The white ants are swarming and
- 9:13I'm eating them as they come up, said the hare.
- 9:16I have never eaten such beautiful ants.
- 9:18They are a miracle of creation. Give me some, said the monkey.
- 9:24Lean down into the hole, said the hare.
- 9:26I bear no malice, and he who eats alone has no joy.
- 9:30I will give you a handful. The monkey went down into the
- 9:34hole, and the hare threw a handful of dust up into his
- 9:37eyes. The monkey sprang back and
- 9:40rolled off the anthill, and the hare jumped out of the hole and
- 9:43ran away. The crow, sitting on a nearby
- 9:46branch, laughed until his throat ached.
- 9:49The monkey wiped all the dust out of his eyes and looked
- 9:51ruefully at the anthill. What shall I do when the leopard
- 9:54returns? He asked the crow.
- 9:56Put colosse of the seeds into the hole, said the crow, and put
- 9:59some rubbish on them until the leopard.
- 10:01You have begun to build a fire for him.
- 10:04So the monkey did this, and when the leopard came back with the
- 10:07firewood, he piled it up over the hole and they set it alight.
- 10:11A coal of synth seed gave a loud pop.
- 10:14What is that? Said the leopard.
- 10:16One of his eyes is burnt, Said the monkey solemnly.
- 10:20Another seed gave a pop. That's his other eye, croaked
- 10:23the crow. But now the seeds were all
- 10:25thoroughly hot and began popping all together, and the crow burst
- 10:29out laughing. And the monkey swung himself up
- 10:31into the tree and laughed until his sides ached.
- 10:34All the leopard fumed with rage, for he knew the monkey was
- 10:37playing some trick. He had to wait until the fire
- 10:41burnt out and the smoke blew away before he could look down
- 10:43into the hole, and then he saw only ashes and twigs, and knew
- 10:47that the hare had escaped. And from that day leopards have
- 10:51hated monkeys, and kill them if they meet them in the forest.
- 10:55And the monkeys sleep high up in the trees among the branches
- 10:58that are too slender to bear the leopard's weight.
- 11:00If he should think of climbing up in the night when he goes out
- 11:03hunting. The.
- 11:06And I'm digging these stories.
- 11:33I never thought I'd be able to find folklore from Uganda, but
- 11:36here we are. Thank you, Ugandans.
- 11:39The first story uses the word quit in a way that I was
- 11:41unfamiliar with. And of course, I like the
- 11:43dealings of the leopards and the other animals.
- 11:46I like this book, even though it's so short.
- 11:48There are only 14 more stories and if I do a three episode,
- 11:51I'll be done before the year is out.
- 11:54And I'm also coming up on the final quarter at school.
- 11:57So I'll be doing some grading just like I'm doing while I'm
- 12:00writing this. So cheers and think of your
- 12:03teachers. And the podcast Shout out is to
- 12:06Wildly Curious, a science show about animals with two fun
- 12:09hosts, Laura and Katie. If you like natural science, go
- 12:13and give these to a listen. And the listener shout out is to
- 12:16Newport, RI, traditional home of the Wampanoag tribe.
- 12:20This city is also home to several wealthy families that
- 12:22keep mansions in Newport, and if I ever get around to visiting, I
- 12:26would love to go see the historic district and to learn
- 12:28more about the Wampanoag language revitalization project.
- 12:31And so to my listener Newport, I say thank you and goodnight.
