- 1:56Speaker 2: Mayvis Staples and just playing.
- 1:59Speaker 3: Alone, just playing alone.
- 2:18Speaker 2: Hi, welcome to the show. I'm Nora, and with me
- 2:21Speaker 2: as always is Sarah Oda.
- 2:23Speaker 4: Hello.
- 2:23Speaker 5: Hello.
- 2:24Speaker 2: Today's show is so fun to record and pretty emotional.
- 2:28Speaker 2: I don't know how you felt about it, Oda, but
- 2:31Speaker 2: for me, it was it was very very special.
- 2:34Speaker 5: I feel like Mayvi's Staples is a force, yeah, but
- 2:40Speaker 5: like a very sweet, tender, loving, huggable force.
- 2:45Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 2:45Speaker 6: I know.
- 2:46Speaker 2: Like, yeah, She's just an amazing human. She is full
- 2:50Speaker 2: of love and we love her.
- 2:52Speaker 5: You cannot be in a bad mood when she's in
- 2:55Speaker 5: the room.
- 2:55Speaker 2: No, And we talk about that a little in this episode,
- 2:58Speaker 2: about her her energy and where it comes from. Mayva Staples,
- 3:03Speaker 2: of course, was part of the Staples Singers.
- 3:06Speaker 5: Mavis and her family were iconic throughout the Civil rights movement.
- 3:10Speaker 5: Her father was friends with doctor Martin Luther King Junior,
- 3:14Speaker 5: and they performed at rallies and protests before his speeches.
- 3:17Speaker 5: They inspired people when people needed it the most.
- 3:21Speaker 2: We enjoyed talking to Mavis about her family and the
- 3:24Speaker 2: dynamic of the Staples singers, Pops, and of course now
- 3:30Speaker 2: she's also a solo artist in her own right. She's
- 3:34Speaker 2: influenced so many people.
- 3:35Speaker 5: Everybody loves her and aside from the incredible music that
- 3:39Speaker 5: she makes, all the stories that come along with the
- 3:42Speaker 5: history she's had and the people she's encountered along the way.
- 3:46Speaker 5: I mean, I could just listen to her talk all
- 3:47Speaker 5: day long.
- 3:48Speaker 2: Yeah, we talk about all this and we sing several
- 3:53Speaker 2: songs together, some that I didn't even know we were
- 3:56Speaker 2: going to sing in this episode, So that was really fun.
- 3:59Speaker 2: She just goes with it at all times, and that's
- 4:02Speaker 2: what's so fun about being around Mavis.
- 4:04Speaker 4: I met her for the first.
- 4:05Speaker 2: Time in twenty ten when we were both honoring Paul
- 4:08Speaker 2: McCartney at the Kennedy Center Honors and she saw me.
- 4:12Speaker 4: We talk about this too, but she saw me and
- 4:15Speaker 4: she took my hand and she said, oh, hey, should
- 4:18Speaker 4: you be my daughter?
- 4:19Speaker 2: Yeah, she just hugged me and it was just, you know,
- 4:23Speaker 2: pure love.
- 4:23Speaker 4: Ever since then.
- 4:24Speaker 2: So I was so honored that Mavis could join me
- 4:29Speaker 2: and we could play songs together and reconnect. It's been
- 4:32Speaker 2: a long time since I'd seen her.
- 4:34Speaker 5: Yeah, and we recorded this episode at Jeff Tweety's studio
- 4:37Speaker 5: in Chicago called the Loft, and start off by talking
- 4:41Speaker 5: about a song that he wrote for her called You
- 4:43Speaker 5: Are Not Alone.
- 4:45Speaker 4: I hope you enjoy. So that's the MAVs corner. I
- 4:56Speaker 4: didn't know that when I was here. You don't have
- 4:58Speaker 4: a corner.
- 4:59Speaker 2: I don't I've been all over the nooks, even in
- 5:04Speaker 2: the draw.
- 5:06Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 5:07Speaker 6: Well I tell you I got my first Grammy from here.
- 5:10Speaker 4: Really.
- 5:11Speaker 7: Yeah, yeah, You're Not Alone. I was from the staple thing,
- 5:16Speaker 7: just Mavis. Uh huh, Yeah, that was my first.
- 5:18Speaker 2: Grand That's one of the most beautiful songs I've ever heard.
- 5:21Speaker 6: It is beautiful and you and I got down on
- 5:24Speaker 6: it too in the Apollo.
- 5:25Speaker 2: Yeah, I was hoping we could start with it actually,
- 5:28Speaker 2: just to warm us up.
- 5:29Speaker 4: Yeah, okay, no problem. Yeah, I know the words to that.
- 5:33Speaker 2: Did whenever he brought it to you, were you moved
- 5:36Speaker 2: by the lyrics?
- 5:37Speaker 4: I was just out and see what he did.
- 5:40Speaker 7: He was writing it right here in the studio and
- 5:43Speaker 7: I was standing over him and he got through that
- 5:46Speaker 7: first verse and I chill bumps came up, you know,
- 5:49Speaker 7: and all of a sudden he stopped. I'm waiting for
- 5:52Speaker 7: him to go into the second verse, and he stopped,
- 5:55Speaker 7: and I said, what you doing. He says, I need
- 5:58Speaker 7: more time, more time, he said. I said, oh, tweety,
- 6:02Speaker 7: and he said.
- 6:03Speaker 6: I'm gonna have it for you tomorrow. I gotta take
- 6:05Speaker 6: it home. I'm gonna have for you tomorrow.
- 6:07Speaker 4: I said, okay, tweet.
- 6:08Speaker 6: But he gave me the part of the melody, and
- 6:13Speaker 6: I laid with that the night that I before tonight,
- 6:16Speaker 6: I was at home, and when I came in the
- 6:18Speaker 6: next day, he laid it on men.
- 6:22Speaker 4: I tell you it just it just hit me. And because.
- 6:30Speaker 6: At that time, you know, I was feeling alone. Really yeah,
- 6:34Speaker 6: I had lost my sister, my oldest sister.
- 6:38Speaker 7: And and uh my other sister was sick, you know.
- 6:41Speaker 7: So the song hit me. You know, it was for me.
- 6:46Speaker 7: It was for me.
- 6:47Speaker 4: It feels made for you.
- 6:49Speaker 7: Yeah, it was made for me. And uh, I love it.
- 6:54Speaker 7: We sing it every show. We don't go off the
- 6:56Speaker 7: stage without singing You're not alone.
- 6:58Speaker 2: I've heard you sing this many, many times. Yeah, I
- 7:02Speaker 2: love it. I was around the house singing it.
- 7:06Speaker 6: If you feel alone, No, I don't alone. I just

- 7:25Speaker 2: harmony the whole way through. Yes, and it has that
- 7:28Speaker 2: not alone feeling it does.
- 7:30Speaker 7: It's so beautiful and its just and and and it
- 7:33Speaker 7: makes you.

- 7:38Speaker 6: you're you're just telling the truth.
- 7:39Speaker 4: You're not alone. I know you're not alone. And I
- 7:43Speaker 4: tell you people people love it. People as soon as

- 13:09Speaker 7: Yes, yes, that must have been. That must have been
- 13:13Speaker 7: my seven year.
- 13:15Speaker 4: Probably, I think. I don't know. I can't remember. I
- 13:20Speaker 4: stopped trying to remember.
- 13:22Speaker 2: I don't remember how old I am. Sometimes I get it.
- 13:26Speaker 4: Yeah, but but but who cares? I don't. I don't
- 13:30Speaker 4: feel like any different.
- 13:32Speaker 2: I feel like we're buds and where this could be
- 13:36Speaker 2: the same age or you know what I mean, like
- 13:38Speaker 2: it doesn't my god.
- 13:40Speaker 4: Doesn't feel it doesn't feel very different. It doesn't feel
- 13:43Speaker 4: very different.
- 13:44Speaker 2: Though you've gotten more experienced than me.
- 13:46Speaker 7: I mean, you know, yes, and I you know, I'm
- 13:50Speaker 7: I'm I'm the old girl. I'm just I'm the seniors.
- 13:54Speaker 7: I'm the golden girl. But I'm hanging with young blood.
- 13:57Speaker 2: You are, and people love you, young people love you.
- 14:01Speaker 4: That makes me feel you know, you walk into the
- 14:04Speaker 4: room and you make me feel young. I don't know.
- 14:07Speaker 4: You just bring the sunshine you.
- 14:09Speaker 7: Yeah, it really makes me feel good that the young adults.
- 14:14Speaker 7: I have one friend who works at Columbia College over here,
- 14:18Speaker 7: and she teaches, you know, she teaches music and she
- 14:21Speaker 7: tells her students stories and she lets me know. She says, Maybes,
- 14:26Speaker 7: these kids love you. These kids, Uh no, you don't know,
- 14:30Speaker 7: Hermit Terry Hermitt. No, yeah, but she she tells me
- 14:36Speaker 7: all the time, and it makes me.
- 14:37Speaker 4: Feel so good. They do though, they love you so much.
- 14:40Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 14:41Speaker 4: Yeah, well see they see that I'm a kid too,
- 14:44Speaker 4: you are, I admit, I agree. Yeah, I've never grown up.
- 14:51Speaker 6: In my heart, I'm still a little kid, you know.
- 14:54Speaker 6: And I just I just I love to play, I
- 14:56Speaker 6: love to sing.
- 14:59Speaker 4: I just love people. So I love babies.
- 15:04Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 15:05Speaker 4: Oh, man, are you take everybody's bab Are you good
- 15:08Speaker 4: with them? I'm good with yeah. Oh.
- 15:10Speaker 7: We get on a plane and and I always take
- 15:14Speaker 7: this little bottle of bubbles with me just in case
- 15:19Speaker 7: some baby is going to cry on that plane.
- 15:23Speaker 4: And I wait on it.
- 15:24Speaker 7: When I hear baby cry, I get my bubbles out,
- 15:27Speaker 7: find the baby, and I started blowing bubbles. And the
- 15:30Speaker 7: baby looks at the bubbles. Mama be so happy that
- 15:34Speaker 7: I came along. Yeah, what I'm bubbles.
- 15:40Speaker 4: Yeah that's your nickname, right, that's my nickname? Yeah? Who
- 15:43Speaker 4: gave you that nickname? Really? Since you were a little girl,
- 15:46Speaker 4: since you were little?
- 15:47Speaker 6: No, not it wasn't until I was about I wasn't
- 15:52Speaker 6: thirty yet.
- 15:52Speaker 7: I was in my twenties, okay, and uh, I asked,
- 15:55Speaker 7: I said, Mama, why you call me bubbles?
- 15:58Speaker 6: She said, maybe it's because you're so bubbly. You're just
- 16:01Speaker 6: always so happy.
- 16:02Speaker 4: You just you know, you just came out that way.
- 16:06Speaker 4: I came that way.
- 16:07Speaker 2: I was going to ask that where that comes from.
- 16:10Speaker 2: But I think people who have that just are like that.
- 16:13Speaker 6: I'm just happy, go lucky all the time.
- 16:15Speaker 3: You know.
- 16:15Speaker 4: Well, that's a great way to be. It really is.
- 16:18Speaker 7: And I'm grateful because but every now and then I'll
- 16:22Speaker 7: let something get on my nerve. But it's got to
- 16:24Speaker 7: be strong, yeah, you know, because most of the time
- 16:28Speaker 7: I overlook it whatever. You know, if it was supposed
- 16:32Speaker 7: to get on my nerve, I can overlook it and
- 16:35Speaker 7: stay happy.
- 16:36Speaker 3: You know.
- 16:37Speaker 4: I'll take some of that, please, Can I have some
- 16:40Speaker 4: of that? It's free of charge.
- 16:42Speaker 2: I'm pretty happy in general, but I'm not a bubbly person,
- 16:45Speaker 2: you know what I mean. Like I don't bring the
- 16:47Speaker 2: sunshine into every room, but I don't get too sad.
- 16:50Speaker 4: Usually I'm pretty even.
- 16:52Speaker 7: Yeah, I have I don't realize it, but you do
- 16:56Speaker 7: bring the sunshine.
- 16:57Speaker 2: Well that's kind of you. But I mean, when I'm
- 16:59Speaker 2: talking about you bring in the sunshine, you're on a hole.
- 17:03Speaker 6: Well come in, noisey, noisy, cruel.
- 17:08Speaker 4: Yeah, you know, but yeah.
- 17:10Speaker 6: And and and Prince used to tell me, he said, Davis,
- 17:13Speaker 6: you're talking too loud.
- 17:14Speaker 4: Really, what a thing to say that would be.
- 17:20Speaker 7: I was grateful though, because also told me then really,
- 17:24Speaker 7: but I've always told you know, there were five of
- 17:26Speaker 7: us children in the house. Yeah, and if you want
- 17:30Speaker 7: to be heard, you gotta let your voice be heard.
- 17:33Speaker 6: I was just I come from a noisy crew, just like.
- 17:36Speaker 4: I say, all the hig family. That's what it's about.
- 17:39Speaker 7: Right, But right, and I'm I'm just grateful.
- 17:45Speaker 6: I know I should talk softer and save.
- 17:49Speaker 2: I think at this point you're good. Did they say
- 17:52Speaker 2: that out of concern for your singing voice? Yeah, okay, yeah,
- 17:55Speaker 2: I mean I get that. But if it hadn't been
- 17:58Speaker 2: a problem yet, right then.
- 18:01Speaker 6: Right, I'm not talking about all my life.
- 18:04Speaker 4: Yeah, I don't think it's gonna be a problem.
- 18:06Speaker 7: But I guess they were just used to being around
- 18:09Speaker 7: people who talked under their voice.
- 18:12Speaker 4: Yes, and now I was surprised his voice so.
- 18:17Speaker 2: Mayavis, Prince he had a low speaking voice. Yeah, I
- 18:21Speaker 2: met him once, but he did he and he was
- 18:23Speaker 2: very soft spoken.
- 18:25Speaker 4: He was, he was, and he observed a lot, right.
- 18:28Speaker 6: Yeah, yeah, oh yeah.
- 18:32Speaker 7: I took him to I said, Prince, it's just gonna
- 18:36Speaker 7: have to make you my son.
- 18:39Speaker 4: Al right, Bavis, I'll be your son.
- 18:42Speaker 7: And I loved him talk because his voice was just rare. Yeah,
- 18:47Speaker 7: you know, but when he sing, you know, it was
- 18:50Speaker 7: a heavy voice when he sing to but to talk.
- 18:53Speaker 7: I saw him do an interview with Arsenio Hall one time,
- 18:58Speaker 7: and man, his voice.
- 19:01Speaker 4: Or Senior was shocked. He was shocked too.
- 19:05Speaker 7: But some people, uh talk in a different voice then
- 19:09Speaker 7: they sing.
- 19:11Speaker 2: My kids told me that when they hear my voice singing,
- 19:16Speaker 2: they think I sound different when I'm just home.
- 19:18Speaker 4: You know, you're telling them what to do, That's what
- 19:21Speaker 4: they tell me.
- 19:22Speaker 7: Oh yeah, they tell you said, yes, your boy, your
- 19:26Speaker 7: singing voice is very mellow and sweet and soft and
- 19:31Speaker 7: and and you you could make a person hurt themselves.
- 19:38Speaker 7: You just you just calm you down. You said, when
- 19:42Speaker 7: I first heard what's.
- 19:45Speaker 4: The name, Oh don't know why, don't know why?
- 19:47Speaker 6: Yeah, when I first don't know, don't know why.
- 19:50Speaker 7: I was around the house doing something and that came
- 19:52Speaker 7: on the radio and I stopped whatever I was doing.
- 19:56Speaker 7: I had to stop and listen. And then the next time,
- 20:00Speaker 7: I said, it's a beautiful song. Next time I heard it,
- 20:05Speaker 7: I saw you. You were on television.
- 20:07Speaker 6: And I was walking around. I was again the TV
- 20:10Speaker 6: was on and you came on and I said, it's
- 20:12Speaker 6: a song.
- 20:13Speaker 4: I saw you. I said, oh my.
- 20:15Speaker 6: Goodness, start singing it.
- 20:18Speaker 7: And it's just been one of my favorites all time.
- 20:23Speaker 4: Thank you. Yeah, my friend Jesse Harris wrote that song. Really,
- 20:28Speaker 4: he was in my band and he wrote the song.
- 20:30Speaker 4: I Love You wrote it.
- 20:31Speaker 2: Sometimes people think I wrote it, but hey, I wrote
- 20:34Speaker 2: a few songs on that album, but I didn't really
- 20:37Speaker 2: get deep into songwriting until a little bit later.
- 20:40Speaker 4: Is that right?
- 20:40Speaker 6: Yeah?
- 20:41Speaker 4: Well, you sing it like you wrote it. I think
- 20:43Speaker 4: you have to, don't you.
- 20:45Speaker 2: You have to feel like you own the song to
- 20:47Speaker 2: really deliver it, even if you didn't come up with it, right.
- 20:51Speaker 2: And that's what you do with the Jeff Twitty songs. Yes,
- 20:53Speaker 2: and that's what you do with every song. I mean,
- 20:55Speaker 2: really do what you have to do, you really do.
- 20:58Speaker 7: You've got to from your heart. Yeah, it's got to
- 21:01Speaker 7: come from your heart. If you you want to deliver
- 21:05Speaker 7: it and you want people to get it and feel
- 21:08Speaker 7: it and react from it the way you have, that's
- 21:13Speaker 7: what's the way you gotta do.
- 21:14Speaker 10: You know.
- 21:15Speaker 4: Pop's always told me.
- 21:18Speaker 7: We were in in New York one time about I
- 21:21Speaker 7: was about thirteen years old, and these kids sang before us,
- 21:24Speaker 7: and they were just jumping all across the stage and
- 21:27Speaker 7: singing loud. So when it was time for us to sing,
- 21:29Speaker 7: I did that. Yeah, and my father snatched me off
- 21:33Speaker 7: the stage. He said, what is wrong with you?
- 21:35Speaker 11: Maybe?
- 21:36Speaker 7: Wow, he said, what are you doing? I said, I'm
- 21:38Speaker 7: just singing. Dad, He said, maybe, let me tell you something.
- 21:42Speaker 7: You don't you your music don't need a gimmick. You
- 21:47Speaker 7: don't need a gimmick.
- 21:48Speaker 4: You know.
- 21:48Speaker 7: You sing from your heart. Sing what comes from the
- 21:52Speaker 7: heart reaches the heart. And that's the way. I've never
- 21:56Speaker 7: forgotten it, never, you know. And he said, you don't
- 22:00Speaker 7: be you don't have to clown. You don't need to
- 22:03Speaker 7: give me. I was drying the kids they were jumping
- 22:06Speaker 7: across the stage. Yeah, singing loud, and uh, he says,
- 22:11Speaker 7: the uh. You singing sacred music. You don't need any gimmick.
- 22:16Speaker 7: Sing from your heart. If you sing from your heart,
- 22:18Speaker 7: you'll reek the people.
- 22:20Speaker 4: I agree with that. I also I think his voice
- 22:24Speaker 4: also had that mellow, easy going.
- 22:28Speaker 2: Yeah, he wasn't trying to sing over anybody, but you
- 22:31Speaker 2: had to lean in.
- 22:32Speaker 4: To hear it. And then it hit you right right.
- 22:35Speaker 6: And you're the same way. You know, you laid back.
- 22:38Speaker 4: I don't know where, I don't know why, but you are.
- 22:44Speaker 6: I'm just so proud to know you, a little lady.
- 22:46Speaker 4: I'm proud to know you.
- 22:51Speaker 2: I met you at the Kennedy Center for the first time,
- 22:54Speaker 2: and you took my hands.
- 22:56Speaker 4: And you saw I was nervous. I remember you knew
- 22:59Speaker 4: I was nervous.
- 22:59Speaker 6: I knew, yeah, you.
- 23:00Speaker 4: Could tell I could. So you took me and you
- 23:02Speaker 4: held me. I said, I gotta protect this little girl.
- 23:07Speaker 4: I was like, what am I doing here? Yeah?
- 23:11Speaker 7: I came on down there and got you and just
- 23:14Speaker 7: stand right by me and we held hands all through
- 23:17Speaker 7: that finale.
- 23:18Speaker 4: Yes, that was so fun. It was so special meeting
- 23:21Speaker 4: you there.
- 23:22Speaker 6: Oh man, that was a good time. Yeah, that was
- 23:25Speaker 6: a good time. Anytime I see your name, I flare up.

- 23:38Speaker 7: Christmas needed you, I was, it really needed you.

- 27:31Speaker 4: Whoa how low can you go? I can go down
- 27:36Speaker 4: very low?
- 27:37Speaker 6: That is amazing.
- 27:38Speaker 4: But did you like that when you were younger?
- 27:41Speaker 7: You know, my voice was so heavy always, and I
- 27:44Speaker 7: get I take it from my mother and my grandmother.
- 27:46Speaker 4: They had strong voices.
- 27:48Speaker 7: But I would Yeah, when I was a kid, it
- 27:50Speaker 7: was my voice is higher now when I get my
- 27:53Speaker 7: tonsils removed?
- 27:54Speaker 4: Oh really, it got higher. Yeah that's so weird.
- 27:57Speaker 6: Oh yeah, I would fight. Kids would tell me you
- 28:03Speaker 6: sound like a boy.
- 28:04Speaker 4: Wow.
- 28:04Speaker 7: And when we started traveling, if I called down for breakfast,
- 28:10Speaker 7: the lady.
- 28:10Speaker 6: Would say yes, mister Staples, Yes, sir, I said.
- 28:14Speaker 7: And I heard it so much the last time. I said,
- 28:16Speaker 7: I'm a lady, and they said, oh, I'm sorry, you know,
- 28:20Speaker 7: but yeah, it's always been uh. I've always had a
- 28:25Speaker 7: heavy voice. And and I used to sing bass our
- 28:30Speaker 7: first record. You know what I'm saying, Well, the will
- 28:32Speaker 7: the Willow who that's insane?
- 28:35Speaker 4: And how old were you?
- 28:36Speaker 7: I was a kid, I was like like nine years old.
- 28:40Speaker 4: That's when uncloudy Day came.
- 28:41Speaker 6: Oh no, and cloudy Day came when I was thirteen, okay.
- 28:45Speaker 4: Twelve thirteen. But but.
- 28:49Speaker 7: They wanted to record us when I was a kid,
- 28:51Speaker 7: and Pops wouldn't allow it. The president of VJ Records,
- 28:56Speaker 7: Vivian Carter, she called Daddy. She said, she says, Stap,
- 28:59Speaker 7: those kids, y'all need to be on record. And Pop said, well, Vivian,
- 29:03Speaker 7: I don't know nothing about those records.
- 29:05Speaker 3: You know.
- 29:06Speaker 4: He was all of us were green, we did, you know?
- 29:09Speaker 7: And he said, I'm not gonna let my children get
- 29:12Speaker 7: on those records.
- 29:13Speaker 2: He was afraid because he was too young, right, he
- 29:15Speaker 2: didn't know.
- 29:16Speaker 4: What would business of it. Wow.
- 29:18Speaker 7: And my sister Yvonne, she would go, she would and
- 29:22Speaker 7: got books. She got this big read book, this business
- 29:25Speaker 7: of music.
- 29:26Speaker 4: She learned. She helped him a lot. Really people, Oh yeah, she.
- 29:29Speaker 2: Got that book and help you guys figure out that's incredible.
- 29:33Speaker 6: Yeah, she sure did. She stayed right with him, you know,
- 29:36Speaker 6: booking and and she.
- 29:40Speaker 4: Taught him a lot.
- 29:41Speaker 7: But also people like the Soulists and and uh sister
- 29:46Speaker 7: Maya Jackson, they were already recording and they would tell
- 29:49Speaker 7: Daddy different things. You know, they would tell him, you know,
- 29:52Speaker 7: what to do and how.
- 29:54Speaker 4: To do and watch out for this.
- 29:55Speaker 7: So when I was about twelve, perhaps called Vivian and
- 30:00Speaker 7: told her. He said, okay, Vivia, we'll make that recognized.
- 30:03Speaker 7: Let my children.
- 30:05Speaker 2: And after he'd read the book, Yeah, yeah, he felt good.
- 30:12Speaker 7: Yeah, because Pops, Pops didn't know. You know, we didn't
- 30:17Speaker 7: We were just singing. He used to sing with an
- 30:19Speaker 7: all male group, six guys, and these guys wouldn't come
- 30:24Speaker 7: to rehearsal, so Poss would be frustrated.
- 30:27Speaker 4: He'd come home mad.
- 30:28Speaker 3: You know.
- 30:29Speaker 7: He came home that third time and he went in
- 30:32Speaker 7: the closet, pulled out a little guitar that he had.
- 30:36Speaker 4: We didn't even know he had a guitar. He couldn't
- 30:39Speaker 4: play it. He could play it.
- 30:40Speaker 7: He couldn't have all the strings, but he could make
- 30:43Speaker 7: it sound good. And he told my Aunt Katy, he said,
- 30:46Speaker 7: I'm gonna sing with my children. He called all of
- 30:49Speaker 7: us into the living room, sit us down on the
- 30:51Speaker 7: floor in the circle, and began giving us voices that
- 30:56Speaker 7: he and his sisters and brothers used to sing when
- 30:58Speaker 7: they were in Mississippi.
- 31:00Speaker 4: That's incredible.
- 31:01Speaker 7: People thought we were old people when we were We
- 31:04Speaker 7: would go places and they just knew we were old.
- 31:06Speaker 4: They heard us, and.
- 31:08Speaker 7: Because because we had a little radio fifteen minute radio
- 31:11Speaker 7: show Sunday morning, and we would sing, and they thought
- 31:15Speaker 7: we were old people because Pops, we were singing those
- 31:17Speaker 7: old voices like his sisters and brothers. We would walk
- 31:21Speaker 7: in little stairsteps and they said, that's the stables sing already.
- 31:27Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah, but that's yeah.
- 31:31Speaker 7: He would give us those voices and and that's how
- 31:35Speaker 7: we started singing. My Aunt Katie lived with us, okay,
- 31:38Speaker 7: and she came through one night.
- 31:40Speaker 4: She says, Chuck, y'all sound pretty good. And my church Sonday,
- 31:45Speaker 4: had you already been singing in church your whole lives?
- 31:48Speaker 7: No, yeah, we've been singing. We hadn't do as the family,
- 31:51Speaker 7: we hadn't been singing in church. We didn't start we
- 31:55Speaker 7: started doing programs at churches. But but uh, my sister
- 32:00Speaker 7: and brother were in the young people's choir.
- 32:02Speaker 4: I was too young to go. Okay, yeah, so you
- 32:05Speaker 4: didn't really sing much until he started doing it, until
- 32:08Speaker 4: he started using what's your order? There's five of you kids.
- 32:12Speaker 4: I'm the baby, you're the baby. Yeah, okay, bubbles, I
- 32:15Speaker 4: get it now. Yeah, I'm the baby.
- 32:17Speaker 6: Oh no, Cynthia, I was the baby for twelve years.
- 32:21Speaker 4: Oh wow. And my baby sister came along, and you know,
- 32:25Speaker 4: I didn't like how did that go?
- 32:28Speaker 6: I didn't like that.
- 32:29Speaker 7: I would be putting diapers on that baby and I
- 32:32Speaker 7: stick up. Mama said maybe you were sticking that.
- 32:35Speaker 4: I said no, ma'am mama.
- 32:39Speaker 7: But Cynthia and I became the best of friends. We
- 32:43Speaker 7: became the t I called her blessed, and she called
- 32:47Speaker 7: me Rabel. She couldn't say my name Rabel, and and
- 32:52Speaker 7: uh oh we she was, uh yeah, she was, she was.
- 32:56Speaker 7: I told Papa, I said, we gotta put Cynthia. She
- 32:59Speaker 7: would sing songs with us when we were in Chicago
- 33:02Speaker 7: at the different churches. You know, but yes, Cynthia, and see,
- 33:06Speaker 7: Mama and daddy they were just my mother was heavy set,
- 33:10Speaker 7: so I never knew she was pregnant, you.
- 33:12Speaker 4: Know, she just happened.
- 33:14Speaker 7: I didn't know where this baby came from. And they
- 33:17Speaker 7: told me, uh to pacify me. Uh because when my
- 33:24Speaker 7: mother came home, she didn't bring the baby. She had
- 33:27Speaker 7: to leave the baby there, and and and and Mama said,
- 33:31Speaker 7: you go with with with Roebuck, get to pick up
- 33:34Speaker 7: the baby. I said, what baby?
- 33:36Speaker 4: What baby? Oh, my gosh. And uh.
- 33:40Speaker 7: Then they started telling me that we had this baby,
- 33:42Speaker 7: and so they let me name her.
- 33:44Speaker 4: They did, Oh yeah, Cynthia.
- 33:46Speaker 6: Marie that.
- 33:51Speaker 4: I named her. Oh boy.
- 33:55Speaker 7: And see, because because what happened, my father he would
- 33:59Speaker 7: he would he wouldn't, he wouldn't pass me up. He
- 34:02Speaker 7: goes straight to that baby of bed or wherever she was.
- 34:06Speaker 7: And and blowing. He used to blow in my stomach,
- 34:10Speaker 7: make me laugh.
- 34:11Speaker 6: Tore me up in the air when he'd come from work.
- 34:13Speaker 6: And all that stopped.
- 34:14Speaker 7: Oh yeah, yeah, And so somebody should have been around
- 34:18Speaker 7: to talk to him, let him know he was supposed
- 34:21Speaker 7: to keep doing that.
- 34:22Speaker 4: That's interesting. Yeah.
- 34:23Speaker 2: I grew up an only child, so It's like just
- 34:27Speaker 2: I can't even imagine what it was like being in
- 34:29Speaker 2: a family, Like.
- 34:30Speaker 6: Oh wow, yeah, it was good being in them.
- 34:34Speaker 7: We we uh, we would have we would disagree, we
- 34:39Speaker 7: didn't have any We fuss sometime, but Mama would tell us,
- 34:43Speaker 7: don't do that. You have to love your sister, and
- 34:47Speaker 7: and that's your sister. And you all make up apologizing me.
- 34:52Speaker 7: But you know, Yvonne and Cleatee they would do most.
- 34:55Speaker 4: Of the argience. Oh yeah, because they were the close
- 34:58Speaker 4: older That makes sense.
- 35:00Speaker 2: Yeah, whenever you guys were traveling, when how old were
- 35:05Speaker 2: you when you started really traveling around and touring.
- 35:10Speaker 4: I guess, oh, yes, we were touring.
- 35:12Speaker 6: Were how old were you.
- 35:13Speaker 4: In that start?
- 35:15Speaker 6: I was, I was like about thirteen.
- 35:19Speaker 8: Wow.
- 35:19Speaker 4: Uncloudy Day was a hit. It was a hit, and
- 35:22Speaker 4: you were thirteen years old. Uncloudy Day.
- 35:25Speaker 7: This woman called pop, She says, Staples, this record is
- 35:28Speaker 7: selling like an R and B. And it turned out
- 35:31Speaker 7: that it was the first gospel record to sell a million.
- 35:35Speaker 6: That's insane. It was.
- 35:37Speaker 4: Yes, it was the first.
- 35:39Speaker 6: Gospel and and and uh.
- 35:42Speaker 4: But but we would we would.
- 35:43Speaker 7: Be we would go to down South, we would go
- 35:47Speaker 7: to Milwaukee, Gary, all around Chicago and sing and and.
- 35:53Speaker 6: People would bet the disc jockey.
- 35:56Speaker 4: When we went to New Orleans.
- 35:58Speaker 7: Memphis, the disc jockey would get on the radio and say,
- 36:01Speaker 7: this is little Navy staple. This little girl is singing this.
- 36:05Speaker 7: People would bet that I was not a little girl.
- 36:07Speaker 4: Yeah, because you had that deep.
- 36:09Speaker 7: I'm saying, well will will oh? Yeah, lord, they tell
- 36:14Speaker 7: me now, And I.
- 36:18Speaker 4: Got home.
- 36:19Speaker 6: I got a home, and you know, I'm a little girl,
- 36:23Speaker 6: little skinny girl.
- 36:24Speaker 2: And you're short now, so you're probably I was even shorter.
- 36:29Speaker 7: I was even shorter. But but but yeah, they would bet.
- 36:33Speaker 7: And what we would do, we would fool the people.
- 36:37Speaker 7: We would sing uncodly dady down in harmony.
- 36:40Speaker 6: Whoa.
- 36:41Speaker 7: They tell me all of that and then get to
- 36:44Speaker 7: the end of it, and I come.
- 36:45Speaker 4: In with, well, will will oh.
- 36:48Speaker 7: So what happened was my brother at that people would
- 36:52Speaker 7: be sitting on they all of these people that bet
- 36:56Speaker 7: that I am not a little girl, and all of
- 36:59Speaker 7: a sudden, perverse move my brother like he's gonna say,
- 37:02Speaker 7: and you hear the people, I.
- 37:04Speaker 4: Told you that wasn't no little girl. I told you
- 37:06Speaker 4: that one. And I'm easy thene how easy to the mic?
- 37:13Speaker 7: And they look up and it's really a little girls. Oh,
- 37:16Speaker 7: we had so much fun with it.
- 37:18Speaker 2: But that's so fun to travel with your family. Did
- 37:22Speaker 2: it ever get sticky?
- 37:24Speaker 4: Nah?
- 37:24Speaker 2: No, you always anything even throughout through he got older.
- 37:29Speaker 4: All of it, all of it.
- 37:30Speaker 7: The only only thing Evonne Clete would argue about saying
- 37:34Speaker 7: was what to wear.
- 37:37Speaker 4: One of them wanted to wear this, and one of
- 37:38Speaker 4: them wanted to wear that.
- 37:40Speaker 7: And see, because you know my brother he left the
- 37:42Speaker 7: group in nineteen sixty nine. It hurt me so bad, really,
- 37:47Speaker 7: because Purvis and I we had this clap. Nobody could
- 37:51Speaker 7: do that clap the way we would. And he just
- 37:56Speaker 7: got grown a man, you know me, and they get
- 38:00Speaker 7: tired of doing what their father.
- 38:02Speaker 4: Tell them to do. You know.
- 38:04Speaker 7: He wanted to be his own man. Because Pop's asking.
- 38:06Speaker 7: Pop said, perr, you sure you don't want to just
- 38:08Speaker 7: take a leave of accent, No, daddy, nope, I quit done.
- 38:14Speaker 7: And just as he quit, I'll take you there, hit Oh,
- 38:19Speaker 7: And and his friends would would mess with him.
- 38:23Speaker 4: He go into one.
- 38:24Speaker 7: Of their bars or whatever, and they put a quarter
- 38:27Speaker 7: in the juke box and play I'll take you there.
- 38:29Speaker 4: Said, y'all shouldn't do that.
- 38:32Speaker 6: Yeah, but he did all right he he he managed
- 38:36Speaker 6: the emotions.
- 38:37Speaker 4: For a while. Oh wow, so he got into the business. Yeah, oh,
- 38:39Speaker 4: he was still in the business. He was still on
- 38:42Speaker 4: the other side of it, right right.
- 38:44Speaker 7: They were They were gospel singers at first, and they
- 38:47Speaker 7: were our little friends, the hutcheson Sunbeams. I mean, they
- 38:52Speaker 7: wanted to sing R and B and so that's when
- 38:55Speaker 7: Purvis took them down the stacks, got him a choreographer,
- 39:00Speaker 7: tarts steps.
- 39:02Speaker 4: They had some hits then.
- 39:03Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 39:04Speaker 4: Yeah, but that's amazing.
- 39:06Speaker 2: I mean, it's amazing to me how close you guys
- 39:10Speaker 2: stayed and that there was let you know, there could.
- 39:13Speaker 4: Have been a lot of drama there.
- 39:14Speaker 6: Oh yeah, oh yeah. But but but but my mother
- 39:18Speaker 6: wouldn't allow it. Mama and Daddy, you.
- 39:20Speaker 4: Know, they just taught us. They they taught us. We
- 39:23Speaker 4: grew up loving one another.
- 39:25Speaker 2: That's so special though, and it's it really feels unique.
- 39:29Speaker 2: And I don't know, you're an only child, but I
- 39:33Speaker 2: do have a half sister who's two years younger than me,
- 39:36Speaker 2: but we both grew up separately, so we didn't know
- 39:39Speaker 2: each other till we were a little older. Oh wow,
- 39:42Speaker 2: but yeah, only child. That sounds like a party to me.
- 39:46Speaker 6: Yeah, Oh my god.
- 39:49Speaker 4: Yeah, because some are you spoiled? Of course you are.
- 39:55Speaker 2: I don't know, but if you ask my mother, she

- 39:59Speaker 6: Well, you know I met your mom, Yeah you did.
- 40:01Speaker 4: She's very tall.
- 40:03Speaker 2: Yeah, oh man, she is tall. She's tall, yeah, and
- 40:09Speaker 2: I'm short. She's five to ten. I'm five to one.
- 40:12Speaker 4: Yeah. So I didn't really.
- 40:15Speaker 2: I might have been spoiled, but I never messed with
- 40:17Speaker 2: her like I was a good kid, because I didn't
- 40:19Speaker 2: want her to get mad.
- 40:20Speaker 4: She was so oh yeah.
- 40:21Speaker 6: Yeah, she was tough, and by her being so tall,
- 40:25Speaker 6: you say I've been, I messed with her.
- 40:26Speaker 4: Yeah. But all you had to do was leap up.
- 40:30Speaker 4: Oh yeah, I don't think that would have flown with her.
- 40:34Speaker 4: You did the right thing. Listen to mom. Mom knows best.
- 40:39Speaker 7: I try, Yeah, you try try.
- 40:44Speaker 4: Oh my god.
- 40:45Speaker 2: Oh man, I was wondering. Do you remember the first
- 40:49Speaker 2: song you sang with Pops when he was teaching you?
- 40:53Speaker 4: Oh yeah.
- 40:55Speaker 7: The very first song my father taught us was what
- 40:59Speaker 7: the Circle Beyond?
- 41:00Speaker 4: Oh yeah, I love that.
- 41:01Speaker 6: One of the Circle Beyond broke and all that was
- 41:04Speaker 6: his faith. And on our records we recorded it about
- 41:08Speaker 6: four or five times, but on the record Pops is singing,
- 41:12Speaker 6: and I love to hear Pop sing because he was
- 41:14Speaker 6: so smooth. You know, he was a singer like you.
- 41:19Speaker 5: He was.
- 41:20Speaker 6: He was laid back.
- 41:21Speaker 7: Look, Sladh Stone came to Pops one day and said, hey, Pop,
- 41:27Speaker 7: give me the bag, and Pop say what you're talking about?
- 41:31Speaker 4: He said, come on, mom, give me the bag. I
- 41:32Speaker 4: know you got.
- 41:33Speaker 2: It because he was so laid back.
- 41:38Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah, they thought.
- 41:43Speaker 6: And purpose my brother had to tell Daddy what I
- 41:47Speaker 6: was talking about. And Pop he says, like, you come,
- 41:51Speaker 6: I'm gonna choke you boy. You know I don't do that.
- 41:54Speaker 4: Mass too funny. Yeah, wow, it was so funny.
- 41:59Speaker 6: Yeah, because they would all talk about how.
- 42:02Speaker 7: Laid back Pop sing, you know, and and his voice
- 42:05Speaker 7: is just flowed.
- 42:07Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 42:07Speaker 6: But when he taught us circle be Unbroken and and
- 42:12Speaker 6: and we have sang it. We sang it with Johnny
- 42:15Speaker 6: Cash on his television show. It was the Staples family
- 42:20Speaker 6: and the Carter family. That was years ago.
- 42:23Speaker 4: That must have been fun. It was fun. Yeah.
- 42:26Speaker 7: It was for one of one of his specials, you know.
- 42:30Speaker 4: Those TV special Yeah.
- 42:32Speaker 7: I love yeah, but but and I sing it all
- 42:36Speaker 7: that's on my on my list on our show and
- 42:42Speaker 7: perhaps may uh, because we look at us as a family.
- 42:49Speaker 4: That's our circle.
- 42:51Speaker 7: And he put us in a circle when he started
- 42:54Speaker 7: giving us the voices to sing.
- 42:56Speaker 4: It was I can just picture it. You're sitting down
- 42:59Speaker 4: in the circle.
- 43:00Speaker 6: Yeah, I'm gonna sing some of it for you.
- 43:05Speaker 4: You sing it to you know. I don't know what
- 43:09Speaker 4: key I.

- 43:10Speaker 14: I was thinking, g.
- 43:14Speaker 6: I was stegning too low?
- 43:16Speaker 5: Huh?
- 43:17Speaker 4: Is that too low?
- 43:18Speaker 5: No?
- 43:19Speaker 4: That's good. What you say, key that is?
- 43:21Speaker 7: That's g okay, that's a shame. I don't know what
- 43:25Speaker 7: ky I sing at.
- 43:26Speaker 4: No, it's not probably has changed over the years.
- 43:30Speaker 7: I'd probably a yeah, I sing in some different keys
- 43:32Speaker 7: though in our shoulders.
- 43:34Speaker 4: But it's all right. I don't need to know what
- 43:36Speaker 4: yeah I say. I can do it in any key.
- 43:38Speaker 4: You just tell me.
- 43:40Speaker 6: Oh, no, you were I think that was good. I
- 43:43Speaker 6: was stinning and that's where you were.
- 43:48Speaker 4: Yeah.

- 47:00Speaker 6: Oh really? Oh yeah? I Cleedy in your foot girl,
- 47:07Speaker 6: don't stop me crying.
- 47:10Speaker 7: I tell you my sister Kleedye. She had the best
- 47:13Speaker 7: best soprano voice.
- 47:16Speaker 4: Really so you were low and she was high. Yeah. Yeah,
- 47:21Speaker 4: so you come from it.
- 47:22Speaker 6: And I credit her for the Staples singer sound.
- 47:26Speaker 7: Really oh yeah, oh wow. She would shoot and look.
- 47:31Speaker 7: Aretha would be recording and she tell her sister Carolyn, Now, Carolyn,
- 47:37Speaker 7: want to sound like cleother.
- 47:39Speaker 4: Oh wow, that's amazing. Yeah.
- 47:42Speaker 7: And and and Carolyn was saying, Carolyn told me about it.
- 47:47Speaker 6: She said, maybe's I told her I can't sound like.
- 47:49Speaker 7: Cleop She was mad about it, mad oh yeah, but
- 47:55Speaker 7: it's a different Pops give Cley like a minor. She
- 48:00Speaker 7: would go like, I know what I'm talking about, minor
- 48:05Speaker 7: in some places.
- 48:06Speaker 4: And but her boys, if you on all of our.
- 48:12Speaker 7: Old stuff where Coletia is singing, her voice stands out,
- 48:16Speaker 7: and and and her her soprano, and Popsa's guitar, that's
- 48:22Speaker 7: the staple of singers.
- 48:24Speaker 4: I love his guitar so much.
- 48:28Speaker 2: And he cool taught himself, well, that's what's good about it.
- 48:32Speaker 2: It's just feeling right. It's simple, but it's it's got
- 48:37Speaker 2: the thing.
- 48:37Speaker 4: That's what it's got, the sound, feeling right.
- 48:41Speaker 2: When did he how did he get that electric sound?
- 48:43Speaker 2: Do you know how that came about?
- 48:45Speaker 4: Pop?
- 48:45Speaker 6: I remember when he got that tremolo.
- 48:47Speaker 4: Because that wasn't typical then, no gospel music.
- 48:51Speaker 7: No and and and and some preachers, some preachers didn't
- 48:55Speaker 7: want to contemplay his guitar in the church. And Pop
- 48:58Speaker 7: said to let him know, look, you read your Bible
- 49:02Speaker 7: string instruments, saying the Bible, you know the heart. The
- 49:06Speaker 7: Pop would name them all. I guess, uh, what's that
- 49:11Speaker 7: other one? I can't call the name of it. But
- 49:14Speaker 7: but but and and and we just wouldn't go to
- 49:17Speaker 7: the church if they wouldn't let Pops playing his guitar.
- 49:20Speaker 7: But he learned from a blues man, Charlie Patton.
- 49:24Speaker 6: Okay, see he.
- 49:26Speaker 7: Pop Pops was on this farm, Patrick Practice Farm in Mississippi,
- 49:32Speaker 7: and this man was hollering with a lot of the
- 49:35Speaker 7: blues singers were on this this farm, and and and uh.
- 49:39Speaker 7: Pops would tell us how this man, Charlie Patton would
- 49:43Speaker 7: be playing and and look, we didn't know for years.
- 49:48Speaker 7: While we were singing gospel, our father was playing the
- 49:52Speaker 7: blues on.
- 49:53Speaker 4: His Yeah, that's what it is. It's the marriage of
- 49:55Speaker 4: those two things. And that made it so unique, right
- 49:59Speaker 4: right right.
- 50:01Speaker 7: But he he he, he went to the guitar store
- 50:04Speaker 7: one day and he came back.
- 50:06Speaker 4: With this trimolo.
- 50:08Speaker 7: He said, y'all, let said listen to this, and he
- 50:11Speaker 7: was drum and Elvis Presley told me one time, the
- 50:16Speaker 7: first time, yeah, the only time I ever saw him.
- 50:19Speaker 7: And the first time I ever saw him, we were
- 50:21Speaker 7: in Memphis and I was standing on the side.
- 50:24Speaker 6: It was a starlight review outside.
- 50:27Speaker 7: And I was standing over in the wing, and all
- 50:30Speaker 7: of a sudden he come in with one of his partners.
- 50:33Speaker 7: They got these leather jackets on like they've been riding motorcycles,
- 50:37Speaker 7: and and and we had sang and and uh. He
- 50:41Speaker 7: told me, he said, I like the way your father
- 50:44Speaker 7: played that guitar. I said, well, thank you. He said, yeah,
- 50:49Speaker 7: he plays a nervous.
- 50:50Speaker 4: Guitar, A nervous guitar. He called it a nervous guitar.
- 50:54Speaker 4: What does that mean? Because of them? That was a
- 51:00Speaker 4: good expression.
- 51:01Speaker 7: I said, well, I've never heard that before, A nervous guitar. Yeah,
- 51:06Speaker 7: that's what I'll never forget. And that was my meeting
- 51:09Speaker 7: with Elvis Presley. I didn't know who one of the guys,
- 51:13Speaker 7: David Ruffin who sing who later sang with the Temptation
- 51:17Speaker 7: he was singing with a gospel.
- 51:19Speaker 4: He told me, he said, maybe you know who that
- 51:20Speaker 4: guy what you was talking to? I said no. He
- 51:23Speaker 4: said blue Sways shoes. I said, I said, that's him.
- 51:28Speaker 4: That's the way he would let me know because of
- 51:31Speaker 4: blue sweight shoes.
- 51:32Speaker 2: Wow.
- 51:32Speaker 6: But yeah, Pops played a nervous guitar.
- 51:35Speaker 4: Did he laugh at that description?
- 51:37Speaker 6: Oh?
- 51:37Speaker 4: Did he laugh? He did? He laugh?
- 51:40Speaker 6: He told me, maybe, why didn't you call me over
- 51:42Speaker 6: to let me me? I said, Daddy, I didn't really
- 51:44Speaker 6: know who he was. I was just a David told
- 51:48Speaker 6: me who he was. Yeah, that was beautiful.
- 51:51Speaker 7: That's a good expression of him though. Of Pops is
- 51:54Speaker 7: guitar nervous guitar because it does.
- 51:59Speaker 4: That's just the funniest thing I've heard.
- 52:01Speaker 7: Yeah, yeah, but but yeah, Daddy, that's that's when he
- 52:07Speaker 7: learned how to play his guitar. And he was always
- 52:09Speaker 7: playing it in the house, you know, after he'd let
- 52:12Speaker 7: us know we had a guitar, because we didn't know
- 52:16Speaker 7: until those guys wouldn't come to rehearsal.
- 52:19Speaker 4: And he decided he probably.
- 52:21Speaker 7: We probably wouldn't be any Staples singers if they had
- 52:23Speaker 7: they had come to rehearsal.
- 52:24Speaker 4: Yeah, So I thank them wow for being not not there,
- 52:29Speaker 4: not not serious about this.
- 52:32Speaker 7: They were the trumpet to and they had a good
- 52:34Speaker 7: group too, Possle singing lead and uh and Pops had
- 52:39Speaker 7: a voice. He would he he never went into his
- 52:43Speaker 7: false settle on the Staple singers.
- 52:46Speaker 6: Oh yeah, he would go and he would tell me
- 52:50Speaker 6: what how they do it up in heaven today and
- 52:54Speaker 6: then he goes pee thereby there like a river.
- 52:58Speaker 7: They say, oh possible bad. Yeah, And I recorded a
- 53:03Speaker 7: song with Tweety that's what.
- 53:05Speaker 6: Are they doing in heaven. I'm not singing it like.
- 53:08Speaker 4: Pops though, Well that's okay. You sing like you. I
- 53:11Speaker 4: thing like me.
- 53:12Speaker 6: Yeah, I sing like me.
- 53:16Speaker 7: I'm so grateful to be talking to you, little lady.
- 53:19Speaker 6: You are.
- 53:21Speaker 7: You are so different from anybody else out here.

- 53:30Speaker 6: Nobody get me up break But that's what show.
- 53:35Speaker 4: But that's what you want, right to be, to be different, right,
- 53:38Speaker 4: and but but I'm just honored.
- 53:41Speaker 7: You know, dude, I never thought I would meet you
- 53:45Speaker 7: when I first heard you on the radio.
- 53:48Speaker 4: Don't know why. I said, listen to who is she?
- 53:54Speaker 4: Who is she? I'm still figuring it out.
- 53:57Speaker 6: Yes, well no, well you you are a giant. You
- 54:01Speaker 6: a tiny little lady.
- 54:03Speaker 4: You are a giant. I tell you, I love it.

- 54:35Speaker 7: the crowd would roar, that's.
- 54:37Speaker 2: So funny, that's what Well, that's one of my favorite
- 54:40Speaker 2: audiences at Red Rocks, and they're always very loving.

- 55:09Speaker 2: I don't know if you remember it, but I was
- 55:10Speaker 2: wondering if you feel like trying it.
- 55:13Speaker 7: Oh, it'll come to me as you go, because I
- 55:19Speaker 7: that's been a while.
- 55:20Speaker 4: What happened? Anyway? We were supposed to go on tour
- 55:23Speaker 4: with that song.
- 55:24Speaker 2: We were gonna go on tour and then the pandemic hit. Yeah,
- 55:28Speaker 2: we were gonna do a bunch of shows together.

- 57:36Speaker 17: gonna shine.
- 57:43Speaker 4: I've got a feeling.
- 57:45Speaker 6: That I still want change my mind running out of
- 57:52Speaker 6: the tide. There's a place on the mountain you can
- 58:14Speaker 6: take my bones. But I go home.
- 58:24Speaker 4: When I get.
- 58:29Speaker 15: Where I'm going, I'll be.

- 1:00:00Speaker 6: now you're talk about a beautiful song.
- 1:00:02Speaker 2: It's a beautiful songs. He wrote this a long time ago, really, yeah,
- 1:00:07Speaker 2: I mean maybe eight years nine years ago. And yeah,
- 1:00:11Speaker 2: at one point he mentioned, gosh, it would be cool
- 1:00:13Speaker 2: to hear maybe his sing this.
- 1:00:14Speaker 4: So I was like, you're right, but yeah, you.
- 1:00:16Speaker 2: Know, I'm I'm a little shy sometimes I have a
- 1:00:19Speaker 2: hard time reaching out and asking to do things.
- 1:00:22Speaker 13: But don't be that way with me, Okay, now you
- 1:00:26Speaker 13: know it don't come to me anything but anything.
- 1:00:29Speaker 2: But it came full circle, but not for like five
- 1:00:31Speaker 2: more years and then and then I got unshy and
- 1:00:34Speaker 2: I asked you to sing it.
- 1:00:36Speaker 4: Yeah, oh yeah, yeah. I was so that that blew
- 1:00:41Speaker 4: my mind. I said, oh wow, it's a great one.
- 1:00:45Speaker 6: That's what I wish. I could play up anything.
- 1:00:48Speaker 4: And you never picked anything up.
- 1:00:50Speaker 6: I picked up the guitar.
- 1:00:51Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:00:52Speaker 7: I told Pops I wanted to play that guitar. And
- 1:00:54Speaker 7: he's tried to teach me, but he didn't. He wasn't
- 1:00:58Speaker 7: taught either. So and and then it.
- 1:01:01Speaker 6: Was a time when Pops was still frisky.
- 1:01:03Speaker 4: I was young. What does that mean.
- 1:01:06Speaker 6: I mean he wasn't readily okay, didn't.
- 1:01:09Speaker 2: Have the patient I think I took it the wrong way.
- 1:01:12Speaker 4: No, I didn't man going out on mama.
- 1:01:14Speaker 6: Yeah, you know that's that's frisky. But no, he just
- 1:01:19Speaker 6: wasn't patient enough.
- 1:01:20Speaker 7: So he gave me about he got me a little
- 1:01:24Speaker 7: training guitar, and he gave me about three lessons and
- 1:01:29Speaker 7: he was done. He said, maybe I'll tell you what, baby.
- 1:01:32Speaker 7: You go down to Lion Heally And I'm eleven years old.
- 1:01:37Speaker 7: I don't know how to.
- 1:01:38Speaker 6: Go downtown to line Healey.
- 1:01:40Speaker 4: To get lessons.
- 1:01:43Speaker 6: Yeah, okay, yeah, to get lessons from them.
- 1:01:46Speaker 7: And I told him, I said, Daddy, I want to
- 1:01:48Speaker 7: pick it like you and sister Rose at the Thark.
- 1:01:50Speaker 7: I don't want to, you know, but but if I
- 1:01:53Speaker 7: had learned, if I had learned how to strum, I
- 1:01:56Speaker 7: think that would have made it easier for him to
- 1:01:58Speaker 7: teach me.
- 1:01:59Speaker 4: You know, to pick. Picking is harder, harder.
- 1:02:02Speaker 7: Yeah, I know, I know that's but but but I
- 1:02:05Speaker 7: would have been happy strumming.
- 1:02:08Speaker 6: You know.
- 1:02:08Speaker 2: I wanted to ask you about when you guys met
- 1:02:14Speaker 2: doctor Martin Luther King and you kind of switched from
- 1:02:18Speaker 2: singing gospel to singing these freedom songs protest songs. I
- 1:02:22Speaker 2: read something about Pops meeting him and saying he wants
- 1:02:27Speaker 2: to sing his words.
- 1:02:29Speaker 4: That is the most beautiful thing I've heard. That was something. Yeah, Pops,
- 1:02:35Speaker 4: he it just happened.
- 1:02:38Speaker 7: We were in Montgomery, Alabama, on Sunday morning. We didn't
- 1:02:42Speaker 7: have to work until that night, and Pops called my
- 1:02:45Speaker 7: sisters and I to his room and he told us,
- 1:02:48Speaker 7: he said, listen, y'all, this man Martin is here, Martin
- 1:02:53Speaker 7: Luther King, and he has a church here.
- 1:02:56Speaker 6: He said, I've been listening to him on the radio.
- 1:02:58Speaker 6: Doctor King had a radio show.
- 1:03:01Speaker 7: And Pops had been listening to him, and he said,
- 1:03:04Speaker 7: I'd like to go to his eleven o'clock service.
- 1:03:07Speaker 4: Do you all want to go, Yeah, Daddy, we wanna go.
- 1:03:11Speaker 7: We all got in the car, went down the decks
- 1:03:13Speaker 7: to Avenue Baptist Church and and we were ushered in
- 1:03:19Speaker 7: and seated. Someone let Doctor L. King know that we
- 1:03:22Speaker 7: were in the service, and he acknowledged us.
- 1:03:26Speaker 6: He said, we got to have Poper Staples and his
- 1:03:29Speaker 6: daughter's here this morning. Hope you enjoyed the service. Well,
- 1:03:33Speaker 6: we enjoyed the service.
- 1:03:35Speaker 7: And that at as the the service is over, the worshipers,
- 1:03:40Speaker 7: Doctor King stands at the door to shake the worshiper's
- 1:03:42Speaker 7: hands as as they filed out, and Pops walked past
- 1:03:46Speaker 7: shook his hand. Now, my sisters and I did first
- 1:03:50Speaker 7: we shoot, We shoot doctor King. Oh that was a feeling.
- 1:03:54Speaker 7: I shook his hand and Pops we had to wait
- 1:03:57Speaker 7: on him. He stood there and talked to him for
- 1:03:59Speaker 7: a while. He finally came on. We get back to
- 1:04:02Speaker 7: the hotel. He called us to his room again and
- 1:04:06Speaker 7: he said, listen, y'all, I l this man's message. I
- 1:04:11Speaker 7: really like his message, and I think that if he
- 1:04:14Speaker 7: can preach it, we can sing it.
- 1:04:17Speaker 4: Wow.
- 1:04:18Speaker 7: And we started writing freedom songs. March up Freedom Highway?
- 1:04:22Speaker 7: Why am I treated so bad?
- 1:04:24Speaker 4: We we we we.
- 1:04:26Speaker 7: We switched over because we didn't feel that it was
- 1:04:29Speaker 7: anything wrong. We felt like this was close to gospel. Yeah,
- 1:04:32Speaker 7: you know, we singing the truth, you know.
- 1:04:35Speaker 6: We we we we wanna we want We joined the
- 1:04:38Speaker 6: movement and and uh we would sing. We would sing
- 1:04:45Speaker 6: before Doctor King would speak.
- 1:04:47Speaker 7: We'd go to the meetings and Doctor King would tell Pop, stay,
- 1:04:51Speaker 7: you're gonna sing my song the night right probably say, oh, yeah,
- 1:04:55Speaker 7: doctor were gonna sing your song?
- 1:04:58Speaker 4: Why am I treated so bad? Yeah?
- 1:05:00Speaker 7: That was his favorite, and and and and people asked
- 1:05:04Speaker 7: me what did He never talked to us girls. He
- 1:05:07Speaker 7: never sit down, and he would just he would just
- 1:05:10Speaker 7: say something, how you girls doing this morning?
- 1:05:13Speaker 4: Y'all doing all right? Yes, sir doctor King? Wow.
- 1:05:16Speaker 7: But he wouldn't sit in hold and Pops would talk.
- 1:05:21Speaker 7: People ask me, what did he talk to you about?
- 1:05:23Speaker 7: What he didn't talk to me?
- 1:05:24Speaker 4: You know.
- 1:05:25Speaker 7: But what what I did remember mostly Doctor King was
- 1:05:29Speaker 7: his laughter. He had this laughter when he laughed, because
- 1:05:34Speaker 7: most of the time I would see him, he either
- 1:05:38Speaker 7: looked sad or serious, you know, And when I'd hear
- 1:05:43Speaker 7: him laugh, that would make my heart happy because I said,
- 1:05:46Speaker 7: doctor King's happy, And that would be most of the
- 1:05:48Speaker 7: time when we'd be going to the meeting and the
- 1:05:51Speaker 7: men would be in a huddle down in the parking lot,
- 1:05:54Speaker 7: and all of a sudden, you hear doctor King laughing.
- 1:05:58Speaker 4: That made me feel so good.
- 1:06:01Speaker 7: But no, he never held a conversation with my sisters
- 1:06:04Speaker 7: and I.
- 1:06:05Speaker 4: He was just asking that.
- 1:06:07Speaker 7: He said the same way every time you girls doing
- 1:06:09Speaker 7: this morning.
- 1:06:10Speaker 4: Wow, how much older was he?
- 1:06:12Speaker 2: You were young?
- 1:06:13Speaker 4: Still? I was young? Yeah? How young were you then?
- 1:06:16Speaker 4: I mean, I'm just I.
- 1:06:18Speaker 7: Was well in the sixties sixty This was like about
- 1:06:22Speaker 7: sixty three, nineteen sixty three, so I was born in
- 1:06:26Speaker 7: thirty nine.
- 1:06:29Speaker 4: I'm not good at math. You were in your you
- 1:06:32Speaker 4: were in your early twenties.
- 1:06:33Speaker 7: Oh, let's say you know, yeah, I was in my
- 1:06:38Speaker 7: early twenties.
- 1:06:39Speaker 4: Yeah, and uh.
- 1:06:41Speaker 6: But but that was when we joined the movement and
- 1:06:45Speaker 6: we became.
- 1:06:46Speaker 4: The soundtrack you did. Yeah.
- 1:06:48Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 1:06:49Speaker 6: Congressman John Lewis would tell oh, he was my friend.
- 1:06:52Speaker 6: Now he was my friend.
- 1:06:54Speaker 7: And I went to his office when I did a
- 1:06:57Speaker 7: Freedom album with Ray Koto, and I asked him if
- 1:07:01Speaker 7: he would write my liner notes, and he said, baby,
- 1:07:04Speaker 7: you know, you and your family, y'all kept us motivated,
- 1:07:08Speaker 7: kept us inspired.
- 1:07:09Speaker 4: To keep on watching your songs.
- 1:07:12Speaker 7: I said, yes, sir, not because after surprised he remembered me. Yeah,
- 1:07:17Speaker 7: I said you, I hadn't seen him in the years,
- 1:07:20Speaker 7: and uh, I was surprised.
- 1:07:21Speaker 4: He gave me a meeting and.
- 1:07:22Speaker 18: His of course he remembered he didn't remember me, baby,
- 1:07:28Speaker 18: your family, and and so he I hate I missed
- 1:07:33Speaker 18: his birthday, invited me to his last birthday party.
- 1:07:36Speaker 7: And I couldn't go. We were working, you know, But
- 1:07:39Speaker 7: but he was my friend to the end. Yeah, Congressman
- 1:07:46Speaker 7: John Lewis.
- 1:07:47Speaker 4: That's beautiful, Uncle John, Uncle John.
- 1:07:51Speaker 2: When you guys were writing songs, was everybody was collectively
- 1:07:56Speaker 2: just sort of pitching in?
- 1:07:57Speaker 4: Did Pops always yeah? Was he Did he ever work
- 1:08:00Speaker 4: on songwriting like on his own all the time? Or yeah?
- 1:08:04Speaker 4: He did.
- 1:08:05Speaker 7: Pops was always jotting something down, you know, and and
- 1:08:09Speaker 7: we would help him. We would put some words in
- 1:08:12Speaker 7: on this on But but that's Daddy's something we we
- 1:08:14Speaker 7: don't want any credit for, okay, right, and we give
- 1:08:17Speaker 7: them to Daddy, all of us. Interesting, Yeah, we we
- 1:08:21Speaker 7: we dropped drop words and he can march of Freedom's Highway.
- 1:08:25Speaker 7: Made up my mind and I won't turn around, made
- 1:08:29Speaker 7: up mine. And there's this one thing I can't understand,
- 1:08:33Speaker 7: my friend, that I'm proud of that because that was
- 1:08:36Speaker 7: me Why some folk think freedom was not designed for
- 1:08:40Speaker 7: all men? There are so many people living their life perplexed.
- 1:08:47Speaker 4: Wondering in their minds, what's going.
- 1:08:50Speaker 7: To happen next. That's why we're going to march, you know.
- 1:08:54Speaker 7: That was the very first one we wrote for the movement.
- 1:08:58Speaker 7: And boy, we moved on. We and and uh we
- 1:09:02Speaker 7: were seeing that. We sing, oh, why am I treating
- 1:09:08Speaker 7: so bad? Possible that because of the there were nine
- 1:09:11Speaker 7: children in Little Rock, Arkansas, trying to integrate Central High School.
- 1:09:18Speaker 4: They would meet people.
- 1:09:19Speaker 7: They these kids would walk up there every day their
- 1:09:23Speaker 7: books in their arms, proud, and people would throw stones
- 1:09:27Speaker 7: at them, spit at them, call.
- 1:09:30Speaker 6: Them names, but they never turned their head. They just
- 1:09:32Speaker 6: kept walking.
- 1:09:33Speaker 4: That's amazing. Oh and these they were my age, they
- 1:09:37Speaker 4: were you know.
- 1:09:38Speaker 7: So we would all be on the floor popsing his
- 1:09:41Speaker 7: recliner and were watching the news. It got so bad
- 1:09:45Speaker 7: and it lasted so long. The mayor of Arkansas, of
- 1:09:52Speaker 7: Little Rock, the governor of Arkansas, and the President of
- 1:09:55Speaker 7: the United States said, let those children go to school,
- 1:09:59Speaker 7: and whoa I wanted to if we all wanted to
- 1:10:01Speaker 7: see this on the news. That particular day, the kids
- 1:10:05Speaker 7: were walking. They get right up to the bus and
- 1:10:09Speaker 7: a policeman put his billy club across the door, and
- 1:10:13Speaker 7: Pop said, right there, and he said, how why is
- 1:10:14Speaker 7: he doing that? Why are they treating him so bad?
- 1:10:18Speaker 7: And he wrote that song from that experience.
- 1:10:21Speaker 6: I tell you, we have had a baby's sister, I have.
- 1:10:27Speaker 4: I have seen a lot. I have seen a lot,
- 1:10:32Speaker 4: and and it.
- 1:10:34Speaker 7: Just makes me more prayerful and more willing to sing
- 1:10:40Speaker 7: my songs, you know, because I I don't have to
- 1:10:46Speaker 7: sing love. I don't have to be like everybody else.
- 1:10:50Speaker 7: I've seen protest songs. I sing to help us.
- 1:10:54Speaker 2: Move it forward, moving forward, right, moving it forward, right,
- 1:10:57Speaker 2: and we're still going.
- 1:10:58Speaker 4: We're still going. Yeah.
- 1:11:00Speaker 6: And and I owe it to Pop's I owe it
- 1:11:03Speaker 6: to my father. You know.
- 1:11:05Speaker 7: We went to South Africa and these people wanted us
- 1:11:08Speaker 7: to sing, want the black people to be in the
- 1:11:11Speaker 7: balcony Johannesburg, And Pops told him, he said, no, I'm
- 1:11:17Speaker 7: anna allow my children to sing like he said. Doctor
- 1:11:20Speaker 7: King just got that straightened out in the States, and
- 1:11:24Speaker 7: we're not gonna sing like that. They said, now you
- 1:11:26Speaker 7: can send us home. Do what you got to do.
- 1:11:29Speaker 7: We're not singing like. So they moved our show to
- 1:11:33Speaker 7: the soccer field and so waito, wow, it's a wait,
- 1:11:38Speaker 7: it's all it's all black.
- 1:11:40Speaker 4: Uh.
- 1:11:41Speaker 7: You know, this is where the people live in little
- 1:11:44Speaker 7: match boxes. And it was the very first time that
- 1:11:48Speaker 7: blacks and white sit together, no kind of I mean
- 1:11:54Speaker 7: that that soccer field was backed yeah, and and black
- 1:11:58Speaker 7: and white were sitting right next to each other. And
- 1:12:01Speaker 7: but they had these I've never seen a German shepherd
- 1:12:06Speaker 7: dog so big. The bit the police was walking around
- 1:12:09Speaker 7: with them, you know, I guess for just in case
- 1:12:12Speaker 7: something went wrong.
- 1:12:13Speaker 4: But it was peaceful.
- 1:12:15Speaker 7: But see, during that time, they wouldn't let us go
- 1:12:19Speaker 7: downtown by ourselves.
- 1:12:21Speaker 4: That must have been hard to go at all it was.
- 1:12:24Speaker 4: They wouldn't allow it.
- 1:12:25Speaker 7: The kids would tell me, if we will call you,
- 1:12:28Speaker 7: we will come see you. If they call my my.
- 1:12:34Speaker 4: Calls would go to the white girl's room.
- 1:12:38Speaker 6: She would be there and she would she would take
- 1:12:41Speaker 6: her and she wouldn't let the kids talk to me.
- 1:12:42Speaker 4: They wouldn't let them in the hotel.
- 1:12:45Speaker 6: That It was very educational, very beautiful experience and.
- 1:12:53Speaker 4: Intense intense, intense.
- 1:12:56Speaker 2: Yes, you've been on tour though since the podemic a lot.
- 1:13:12Speaker 2: You've got to tour in these little pockets. And I'm
- 1:13:16Speaker 2: really excited to hear that I haven't at all yet.
- 1:13:20Speaker 2: What I just haven't not since the the COVID started.
- 1:13:26Speaker 2: Oh okay, you know, I'm excited that you're out there
- 1:13:29Speaker 2: doing it.
- 1:13:29Speaker 6: Oh yeah, I'm going everywhere you're going.
- 1:13:32Speaker 4: And we booked now through November. You're doing a tour
- 1:13:37Speaker 4: with Bonnie Ray the Center. I always do it. That's amazing.
- 1:13:41Speaker 4: That'll be my third tour.
- 1:13:42Speaker 2: We've known her a long time, right, Oh, yes, she's great.
- 1:13:45Speaker 2: You know that's going to be a show.
- 1:13:48Speaker 4: I tell you. Oh, it's always good show. Yeah.
- 1:13:50Speaker 7: But I used to be jellous of Bonnie. My father
- 1:13:53Speaker 7: loved us so much.
- 1:13:55Speaker 4: You're jealous.
- 1:13:56Speaker 7: And I told us, I said, look, I didn't know
- 1:14:00Speaker 7: if I should get some red hair, or if I
- 1:14:03Speaker 7: should learn how to play to get taught, or if
- 1:14:05Speaker 7: I should get real tiny because poss love. Yeah, and
- 1:14:09Speaker 7: she loved she came to see she came to the
- 1:14:12Speaker 7: hospital Seapop when he was sick. Wow, And and Bonnie
- 1:14:16Speaker 7: took me so bad. Pop went upstairs.
- 1:14:18Speaker 6: He wasn't feeling good, and he went upstairs to lie down.
- 1:14:23Speaker 6: She followed him. She sit on the bed and she said,
- 1:14:26Speaker 6: now nobody can tell me I haven't been in pop
- 1:14:28Speaker 6: Stable bed.
- 1:14:32Speaker 2: That's Bonnie, Yeah, that's Bonnie.
- 1:14:35Speaker 7: It was funny, Yeah, it's funny, but it was so good.
- 1:14:39Speaker 7: Made Possib feel so much better. He gave her a guitar.
- 1:14:42Speaker 7: He had to get there, and all of us were there.
- 1:14:45Speaker 7: We sang, that's beautiful.
- 1:14:47Speaker 4: It was it was.
- 1:14:48Speaker 2: Isn't it something? How music keeps you going? Yes, it
- 1:14:51Speaker 2: really keeps Yes, it keeps you young, It keeps you young,
- 1:14:54Speaker 2: and it's healing. Yeah, and it brings joy.
- 1:14:58Speaker 4: And right, and we can't do without music. I know,
- 1:15:02Speaker 4: no way.
- 1:15:03Speaker 2: I get that feeling from you.
- 1:15:05Speaker 7: Yeah, you know, yeah, I passed it on the passing it,
- 1:15:11Speaker 7: but well, I tell you, yours brought me so much.
- 1:15:15Speaker 2: I wish could, Oh, I wish I could play watch
- 1:15:19Speaker 2: him play guitar in the person.
- 1:15:21Speaker 4: You know what you would do?
- 1:15:22Speaker 6: He would tell me that's the way. Oh no, that's
- 1:15:29Speaker 6: you know who else?
- 1:15:30Speaker 2: You know who else gave me that feeling? Always was
- 1:15:33Speaker 2: Levon Helm Is that right?
- 1:15:35Speaker 8: Yeah?
- 1:15:35Speaker 4: He gave me that.
- 1:15:36Speaker 2: Feeling where he just it was just all music and
- 1:15:39Speaker 2: it kept.
- 1:15:39Speaker 4: Him going and just you know, oh man, And.
- 1:15:43Speaker 2: I remember the first time I saw you on TV,
- 1:15:47Speaker 2: was watching The Weight on the Last Walls and I thought,
- 1:15:52Speaker 2: my goodness, she is beautiful.
- 1:15:56Speaker 4: And she's smoking all of that. I couldn't believe it.
- 1:16:01Speaker 4: Oh my god.
- 1:16:02Speaker 2: I was just like, and you looked six feet tall,
- 1:16:05Speaker 2: and you look so tall.
- 1:16:08Speaker 4: For me, it's yes, yeah you do. We had on
- 1:16:12Speaker 4: those long black gown.
- 1:16:13Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 1:16:13Speaker 4: It was beautiful.
- 1:16:15Speaker 6: Oh man.
- 1:16:15Speaker 2: I mean I'd heard your singing my whole life, but
- 1:16:18Speaker 2: it was the first time I zerre it in and visually.
- 1:16:21Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah, that was nice. I know you had our
- 1:16:24Speaker 4: long friendship with Levon.
- 1:16:26Speaker 7: Oh lord Levon. I have an album coming out with Levonne.
- 1:16:31Speaker 7: Wow and and and uh.
- 1:16:33Speaker 6: We we did it at his barn and he was
- 1:16:36Speaker 6: right next to me and with them drums.
- 1:16:38Speaker 4: But but I tell you about it.
- 1:16:40Speaker 7: When we when we were doing les Walt, Levon was
- 1:16:45Speaker 7: smoking and Pops went back to we had a break, Levon,
- 1:16:49Speaker 7: Pops go back. They were tight buddies Levon and Pops said, Levon, man,
- 1:16:55Speaker 7: you smoking two cigarettes. He had a cigarette and Levon said, all.
- 1:17:02Speaker 4: You gotta try this one. I don't think they were
- 1:17:04Speaker 4: the same. Yeah, they were not the same.
- 1:17:07Speaker 7: Papa said, Levon, I don't think that messed but that
- 1:17:11Speaker 7: that Daddy laughed about that forever.
- 1:17:15Speaker 4: He laughed about that.
- 1:17:16Speaker 7: But yeah, Levonne, that was the best time because we
- 1:17:20Speaker 7: stayed there about a week. We you know, we would
- 1:17:24Speaker 7: go back to the barn every day from the hotel.
- 1:17:27Speaker 4: And making the record.
- 1:17:28Speaker 2: Yeah. So when did you make it? About ten years ago?
- 1:17:31Speaker 4: Yes?
- 1:17:32Speaker 7: Yeah, yes, because I was gonna say, look, are you
- 1:17:34Speaker 7: all gonna release this record? Am I going to be?
- 1:17:38Speaker 7: Didn't gone or what? But yeah, they it's coming I
- 1:17:42Speaker 7: think in May.
- 1:17:43Speaker 2: Okay, Yeah, yeah, I can't wait to hear it.
- 1:17:47Speaker 4: It's been a long time and I love it.
- 1:17:49Speaker 2: You know that he's gone, especially, it'll be so special, right.
- 1:17:53Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:17:54Speaker 7: And Amy Amy helped, you know. I told her to
- 1:17:57Speaker 7: tell her about it. I said, Amy, the didn't need
- 1:17:59Speaker 7: to release the record. Yeah, you know, we end up
- 1:18:01Speaker 7: in age and we might leave here me so she said,
- 1:18:08Speaker 7: you gotta going good. But yeah, that was that was
- 1:18:12Speaker 7: a proud time.
- 1:18:13Speaker 2: Did you do what the songs? Did you do with Levan?
- 1:18:16Speaker 2: Did you do all old songs? Did you do that
- 1:18:19Speaker 2: that Nina Simone version, that's a Billy Taylor song, isn't it.
- 1:18:24Speaker 2: I wish I knew how it would feel to be free.
- 1:18:26Speaker 4: That's a Billy Taylor song.
- 1:18:28Speaker 2: That's what my my my phone said when I googled it,
- 1:18:31Speaker 2: because I mean the Nina version is. But I think
- 1:18:35Speaker 2: it's that Billy Taylor wrote it, really, and I it's
- 1:18:38Speaker 2: so funny. I saw him play. Yeah, And when I
- 1:18:41Speaker 2: was in high school, I didn't realize that. Yeah, but yeah,
- 1:18:46Speaker 2: that's a great song. Did you record that with Levan? Yeah?
- 1:18:50Speaker 7: I wish I knew. And and we recorded Trouble in Mine? Oh,
- 1:18:53Speaker 7: I love that one in mine?
- 1:18:54Speaker 6: Yeah, and and uh ohh, I love some Nina Nina.
- 1:18:59Speaker 4: Did you know her?
- 1:19:00Speaker 2: Oh?
- 1:19:01Speaker 7: Yes, well yeah, yes, And she was someone I met
- 1:19:04Speaker 7: whose voice was heavier than mine.
- 1:19:06Speaker 4: Yes, yeah, and boy she was.
- 1:19:10Speaker 7: I saw her first saw her in the village gate
- 1:19:14Speaker 7: and she had on a white she was playing that
- 1:19:17Speaker 7: piano and and and all of.
- 1:19:19Speaker 4: The sudden and people dawn. She stopped and stood up.
- 1:19:25Speaker 6: Do you people have cotton in your ears?
- 1:19:28Speaker 4: Whoa?
- 1:19:28Speaker 7: She told them off, because they were talking, you have
- 1:19:33Speaker 7: cotton in your ears?
- 1:19:35Speaker 6: And I said, whoa, go on, sister, But yeah, we
- 1:19:40Speaker 6: got to know, we got to be very good friends.
- 1:19:42Speaker 4: That we were.
- 1:19:43Speaker 6: We were in the Bahamas, though last time I saw
- 1:19:45Speaker 6: her we were in the Bahamas.
- 1:19:48Speaker 7: And uh, then she moved to New Guinea where Miriam
- 1:19:52Speaker 7: mckibo was and and uh she passed.
- 1:19:57Speaker 4: Away over there.
- 1:19:58Speaker 7: But but baby's sister, we were in New Guinea, don't
- 1:20:02Speaker 7: you know. These little guys they were in the auditorium
- 1:20:06Speaker 7: where we were singing.
- 1:20:08Speaker 6: They want to have a coup against the president of somebody.
- 1:20:12Speaker 4: Oh God. And we got to.
- 1:20:14Speaker 7: The show and we're standing at the door, Pops and
- 1:20:18Speaker 7: my sister and I and this man is saying that's
- 1:20:24Speaker 7: all we could understand was you know, and and he
- 1:20:29Speaker 7: was telling them. So they still came in with the guns.
- 1:20:34Speaker 7: And they stood on the side of the stage in
- 1:20:37Speaker 7: the wings where we were, and as I was singing,
- 1:20:42Speaker 7: I would look over there a little bit and it
- 1:20:44Speaker 7: would be just dancing.
- 1:20:47Speaker 4: That is crazy. Yeah, y'all, don't scared us to death.
- 1:20:50Speaker 2: You have gone to some wild times places you've you've
- 1:20:54Speaker 2: had it.
- 1:20:55Speaker 4: Yes, yeow. Yeah, So we made it through that one.
- 1:20:59Speaker 2: I do have one more question, if you feel comfortable
- 1:21:02Speaker 2: talking about it. Yeah, I was curious about songwriting and this.
- 1:21:09Speaker 2: How were you told me yesterday. Yeah, that broke my heart.
- 1:21:13Speaker 7: You know, it's been so long ago that I'm surprised.
- 1:21:17Speaker 4: I even brought it up. I mean, I don't know.
- 1:21:20Speaker 7: Somebody said something about a songwriting and it did this man.
- 1:21:26Speaker 7: You know, I had written my three songs and he
- 1:21:32Speaker 7: was at Stax Records. He wanted all of my publishing.
- 1:21:36Speaker 5: Yea.
- 1:21:37Speaker 7: And I'm telling him on the phone, telling him, no,
- 1:21:42Speaker 7: I'm singing twelve songs on the album. You know, you
- 1:21:47Speaker 7: take all that pubblish but mine. My father's always taught
- 1:21:50Speaker 7: me I should get one hundred percent of my writers
- 1:21:54Speaker 7: and publishing. And he talked to me like, all right,
- 1:21:59Speaker 7: miss Stables, all right, I understand, yes, all right, We'll
- 1:22:02Speaker 7: do as you like. And I'm thinking I've won. Yeah,
- 1:22:07Speaker 7: the record come out and and it's it's on a
- 1:22:13Speaker 7: different label or something, and uh, it's me singing.
- 1:22:18Speaker 4: And then they have songwriter unknown and a song you wrote. Yeah,
- 1:22:25Speaker 4: the songs that I wrote.
- 1:22:26Speaker 7: Wow, And I said, well, you know, it was so
- 1:22:29Speaker 7: long ago, you know, no need of me trying to
- 1:22:34Speaker 7: fix this now.
- 1:22:35Speaker 4: But that broke my heart. And you didn't write after that.
- 1:22:39Speaker 4: I didn't write anymore songs.
- 1:22:40Speaker 2: But that's that's the sad part. But but you still
- 1:22:43Speaker 2: make all songs your own. Yeah, yeah, yeah, but that's
- 1:22:47Speaker 2: just you know, that stuff happened so much.
- 1:22:49Speaker 4: Yeah back then.
- 1:22:52Speaker 6: You know, it's a shame the way people are treated.
- 1:22:56Speaker 6: You know, it's not just me, you know. I'm sure
- 1:23:03Speaker 6: the record business has.
- 1:23:04Speaker 4: Been tricky, tricky, tricky, tricky, but it was much trickier
- 1:23:10Speaker 4: back then. Yeah, yeah, way back.
- 1:23:12Speaker 7: That was and and and and I was doing stuff.
- 1:23:16Speaker 7: You know, I was afraid because I was these were
- 1:23:19Speaker 7: these were secular songs, yeah, and and and you do
- 1:23:23Speaker 7: something secular against the gospel stuff. I was lucky. I
- 1:23:28Speaker 7: don't know how it happened. I recorded houses, not a home.
- 1:23:31Speaker 7: I recorded a second and and the church people didn't
- 1:23:34Speaker 7: say nothing about it.
- 1:23:35Speaker 4: Yeah, because you you got in trouble for that.
- 1:23:38Speaker 7: I could have got could but they didn't. You know
- 1:23:41Speaker 7: what they messed with. I'll take you there. They wanted
- 1:23:45Speaker 7: to put us out of church. Wow, they say, the
- 1:23:47Speaker 7: stable singers and singing the devil's music. Wow, the devil music.
- 1:23:51Speaker 7: I said, you all, you gotta listen to our lyrics.
- 1:23:55Speaker 7: They heard this beat and then the people would jump
- 1:23:58Speaker 7: up and dance, and I'll take you there, you know,
- 1:24:01Speaker 7: because but up until I'll take you there, we just
- 1:24:06Speaker 7: sang with my father's guitar.
- 1:24:08Speaker 6: We didn't have no rhythm section. Yeah, we just sing
- 1:24:11Speaker 6: with dad his guitar.
- 1:24:12Speaker 7: And and but when this rhythm section came on, I'll
- 1:24:15Speaker 7: take you there singing.
- 1:24:17Speaker 4: The Devil's it sounded different.
- 1:24:19Speaker 7: Look, we're telling you I know a place. Ain't nobody crying?
- 1:24:23Speaker 7: I mean, ain't nobody world.
- 1:24:24Speaker 4: That's a gospel song, taking you to heaven? Yeah, I mean,
- 1:24:32Speaker 4: and and lo and behold.
- 1:24:34Speaker 7: After all the interviews we did talking to these people,
- 1:24:37Speaker 7: they invited us back to church.
- 1:24:40Speaker 4: We go back to church.
- 1:24:41Speaker 7: The first song requested in the pool bit I'll take
- 1:24:45Speaker 7: you there.
- 1:24:46Speaker 4: You know what I said. You know you just don't
- 1:24:50Speaker 4: know what to do to please people.
- 1:24:51Speaker 2: It's true. That's why you gotta just speak your truth,
- 1:24:55Speaker 2: sing your truth right and spread some love.
- 1:24:58Speaker 4: Spread love, put out love, Yes, put it out there,
- 1:25:01Speaker 4: and that's what you do. I'm gonna do it. I'm
- 1:25:04Speaker 4: gonna keep on doing it. You are my favorite fall
- 1:25:07Speaker 4: of love. You, my little sweetheart. I love you so much.
- 1:25:12Speaker 4: Do you have one more song in you?
- 1:25:15Speaker 2: Or can I play? Can I play you a song?
- 1:25:17Speaker 2: And you chime in if you want.
- 1:25:18Speaker 4: Yeah, and we'll end it. We can.
- 1:25:20Speaker 2: Let's do it the album. Pops made the album uh
- 1:25:28Speaker 2: that song friendship, Oh yes, and then Jeff and the
- 1:25:34Speaker 2: crew they kind of fixed it up right and and
- 1:25:38Speaker 2: recorded all recorded like you weren't happy with it, and it.
- 1:25:41Speaker 4: Never got that's right.
- 1:25:43Speaker 7: And tweety did all that for Pop's album. That was
- 1:25:46Speaker 7: that's his last work, and I wanted it. I wanted
- 1:25:50Speaker 7: to put it out there, but I wanted to put
- 1:25:52Speaker 7: it out properly and write.
- 1:25:54Speaker 4: And so he.
- 1:25:56Speaker 2: Re recorded all the stuff that you weren't happy with, right. Yes,
- 1:26:00Speaker 2: he took the tracks of Pops and you guys singing,
- 1:26:04Speaker 2: and I.
- 1:26:05Speaker 4: Was so pleased.
- 1:26:06Speaker 6: I come up in here to listen and tears just flowed.
- 1:26:11Speaker 18: You know.
- 1:26:11Speaker 6: My sister Vaughn and I we we came to check

- 1:27:03Speaker 6: I see what I can do.
- 1:27:08Speaker 4: There's a times we disagree. We agree more that we don't.
- 1:27:16Speaker 6: We won't always see I do lie.
- 1:27:20Speaker 4: But we will more than we won't because we.
