- 0:03Today we have an especially pertinent topic as NASA moves
- 0:06into the next phase of its Artemis program, planning to put
- 0:09the first humans back on the moon since the legendary Apollo
- 0:13missions in the 60s and 70s. And we'll be discussing how
- 0:16Spacex's Starship program is becoming increasingly crucial
- 0:19for NASA's lunar plants. Will unpack NASA's recent press
- 0:23conference with the Artemis 2 Astronauts and dig into the
- 0:25challenges and milestones for the Artemis program and explore
- 0:29the pivotal roles the SpaceX and it's Starship spacecraft play in

- 0:56conference with the astronauts for the Artemis 2 mission which
- 1:00aims to launch in November of 2024, and the conference
- 1:03provided A plethora of updates on the missions, objectives,
- 1:07timelines and interestingly, the integration of Spacex's Starship
- 1:11as a key component in future lunar missions such as the
- 1:15Artemis 3 mission. Now.
- 1:17NASA's administrator, Bill Nelson underscored the
- 1:20importance of the Artemis program as a stepping stone for
- 1:23even more ambitious ventures such as Mars missions, and to
- 1:26highlight the strategy as NASA's partnership with SpaceX
- 1:30specifically contracted the space company to provide the
- 1:33lunar Lander that will act as the first astronaut base on the
- 1:37moon. Now, Artemis 2 itself will be a
- 1:40critical test flight that carries 4.
- 1:42Astronauts, however, is essential to note that they will
- 1:45not actually land on the surface of the Moon.
- 1:48The Orion spacecraft is primarily a transit vehicle
- 1:52designed to dock either with SpaceX, a Starship lunar Lander,
- 1:55or the Gateway Lunar Space Station.
- 1:58Now, NASA's Deputy Administrator Pam Melroy clarified the
- 2:01mission's pivotal role in laying the groundwork for the
- 2:04succeeding steps in the Artemis program.
- 2:06Now, during the Artemis 1 mission, NASA performed A slew
- 2:10of tests on the Orion spacecraft, covering aspects
- 2:13like power generation, cooling systems, and electrical
- 2:16circuits. And while most tests were
- 2:18successful, certain irregularities were noticed in
- 2:21the spacecraft's heat shield, requiring further investigation.
- 2:25Reed Weissman, the mission commander for Artemis 2,
- 2:28highlighted that astronaut safety is a primary concern for
- 2:32the mission, and any hiccups in the spacecraft performance
- 2:35before setting a trajectory for the moon could trigger a mission
- 2:39abort, bringing the crew safely back down to the surface of the
- 2:42Earth and looking beyond Artemis 2.
- 2:45The Artemis 3 mission is scheduled to land astronauts on
- 2:48the moon by December of 2025. Now, the feasibility of this
- 2:52timeline is closely tied to Spacex's ability to successful
- 2:56launch Starship multiple times, proving its reliability and its
- 3:01performance. And SpaceX must also demonstrate
- 3:04its capability for orbital refueling, a necessary step for
- 3:08sending the second stage Starship to the Moon.
- 3:11And NASA officials recently visited Spacex's starbase to
- 3:15scrutinize their progress and discuss future milestones,
- 3:18including plans for propellant demonstration and an uncrewed
- 3:21test flight. Now, this visit served to bridge
- 3:24communication gaps and align both teams more closely.
- 3:27And SpaceX is building a specific lunar variant for the
- 3:31Artemis 3 mission. And after the pivotal Artemis 2
- 3:35mission, which we've already discussed about, now the next
- 3:37major milestone on NASA's road map is Artemis 3, and this is
- 3:41for December of 2025. Artemis isn't just another
- 3:45mission though. It aims to be the mission that
- 3:46will return astronauts to the lunar surface, but they're doing
- 3:50it in a 150 foot tall rocket. This is monumental.
- 3:55We're talking about putting humans on the moon for the first
- 3:58time since 1972, when the Apollo 17 mission brought Eugene Cernan
- 4:03and Harrison Smith back to Earth.
- 4:05Now the spotlight is on Starship as it takes on an unprecedented
- 4:09role. Then contrast to Artemis 2,
- 4:12which primarily serves as a trial run for the equipment and
- 4:14protocols involved in a lunar journey.
- 4:17Artemis 3 has the objective of actually landing these
- 4:20astronauts on the Moon, and the mission success is tied
- 4:23intricately to the capabilities of the Starship Lunar Lander,
- 4:27which is designed to safely ferry astronauts from lunar
- 4:30orbit to the surface and back in, The intricacies of the
- 4:33Starship Lander will be under intense scrutiny.
- 4:36For instance, the Lander will have to demonstrate advanced
- 4:38propulsion systems to navigate the moon's low gravity
- 4:41environment. It also must be equipped with
- 4:43life support systems to sustain the astronauts during their stay
- 4:47on the lunar surface, possibly lasting several days.
- 4:50Moreover, the Lander must facilitate smooth ingress and
- 4:54egress for astronauts who will be in bulky spacesuits, a
- 4:57feature that cannot be overlooked.
- 4:59Additionally, orbital refueling presents another set of
- 5:02challenges. SpaceX needs to prove not just
- 5:05to NASA, but to the whole space faring world, that Starship can
- 5:10be reliably refueled in Earth's orbit before making the journey
- 5:14to the moon. This involves developing new
- 5:16technology to transferring fuel in the vacuum of space, A
- 5:20procedure that has its own set of complexities.
- 5:23And failure to do so could result in delays that could push
- 5:25the mission past its planned date, which is why NASA is
- 5:29paying such close attention to Spacex's progress in this area.
- 5:32But let's not forget, landing astronauts on the moon is only
- 5:35part of the mission. Getting them safely back is
- 5:38equally critical. Now.
- 5:40This means the Starship Lunar Lander will also have to
- 5:43rendezvous back with the Orion spacecraft.
- 5:45And where orbit and the intricacies involved in his
- 5:48docking maneuver aren't trivial, as a single mistake could
- 5:51jeopardize the entire mission and put the lives of the
- 5:54astronauts at risk. Another layer to consider is
- 5:57international collaboration. The Artemis Accords, which
- 6:01outline A framework for international cooperation in
- 6:03space exploration, are expected to play a significant role in
- 6:07the Artemis 3 mission. NASA is encouraging
- 6:09international partners to contribute to the mission, be it
- 6:12through providing additional technologies, conducting joint
- 6:15experiments, or sharing logistical responsibilities and
- 6:19all these aspects. And for the complexity and also
- 6:22diplomatic nuance to the missions, planning and
- 6:24execution. And in the backdrop of all this,
- 6:27NASA's administrative machinery is also hard at work.
- 6:30They're juggling budget considerations and constraints,
- 6:33timelines and partnerships with other contractors and suppliers.
- 6:37The planning is fluid and the flexibility to adapt as crucial
- 6:40as they await regular updates from SpaceX and assess the
- 6:44readiness levels of the technology, the astronauts, and
- 6:47the mission as a whole. And to say that the Artemis 3
- 6:50mission is complex would be a huge understatements.
- 6:54It's colossal undertaking as a cascade of implications not just
- 6:58for NASA and SpaceX, but for humanity's reach into space.
- 7:02And when asked about the definite dates for the Artemis 3
- 7:05mission, NASA remains somewhat elusive, emphasizing the need
- 7:09for realistic scheduling and an adequate margin for unseen
- 7:13challenges. Now, with rigorous testing
- 7:15ongoing, including heat shield tests at NASA's Ames Facility,
- 7:19NASA seems to be leaving no stone unturned in their quest to
- 7:22return humans to the moon, to Mars and beyond.
