- 1:03All right. Thanks.
- 1:05Stick with worry at the risk of fraudsters having their Social
- 1:10Security numbers, banking information, and other personal
- 1:13information shared with Musk cronies who've invaded the
- 1:18Social Security Administration. So let's be clear.
- 1:22President Trump and Elon Musk have launched a public campaign
- 1:27against Social Security. Mr. Musk is calling Social
- 1:31Security a Ponzi scheme, and both he and President Trump are
- 1:37spreading widely discredited lies about the program and its
- 1:41integrity. But the facts don't add up.
- 1:45Let me read just a few of the countless news headlines
- 1:48debunking their false claims. The Associated Press says 10s of
- 1:53millions of dead people aren't getting Social Security checks
- 1:56despite Trump and Musk claims. ABC News says Musk misreads
- 2:02Social Security data Millions of dead people are not getting
- 2:06benefits, experts say. CBS News says news Social
- 2:11Security chief refutes claims of deceased people over 100 years
- 2:17get 100 years old getting checks The Washington Post says Elon
- 2:22Musk claims of Social Security fraud don't hold up, and here's
- 2:26why. And The New York Times says
- 2:30millions of dead people on Social Security.
- 2:32The agency's own data says otherwise, and in fact, the
- 2:38claims by Elon Musk are based on complete misunderstanding of
- 2:42Social Security's data systems, which often lack complete birth
- 2:46and death information for people born before 1920, before Social
- 2:52Security was established and long before electronic records
- 2:57were kept. A 2023 Inspector General report
- 3:01said that almost none of these people born before 1920 with
- 3:06misinformation are paid benefits.
- 3:11But my constituents are also worried.
- 3:13Worried because the Trump administration is taking a
- 3:16Wrecking Ball to the Social Security Administration.
- 3:19Far from making the agency more efficient, they are undermining
- 3:24its ability to serve the public. And why are they trying to
- 3:27destroy the Social Security Administration?
- 3:31It's the first step of a long standing effort by Republicans
- 3:35to dismantle trust in Social Security and slash benefits.
- 3:40The Trump administration wants to close Social Security offices
- 3:45across the nation and slash the agency's workforce by nearly one
- 3:50in eight employees. Social Security Administration
- 3:56This administration is already at A50 year staffing low due to
- 4:01years of underfunding, and it's serving more beneficiaries than
- 4:06ever. How will gutting its workforce
- 4:10help it to serve the American people?
- 4:14While the answer is that it doesn't, and in fact, it's very
- 4:18likely a move to undermine confidence so that the Trump
- 4:23administration can privatize it. And with that I yield back.
- 4:29Memory yields back. I now recognize Miss Moore for 5
- 4:32minutes to strike the last quarter.
- 4:37Thank you so very, very much, Mr. Chairman and and Ranking
- 4:42Member and Members, I am reminded of what Maya Angelou
- 4:49said when she said, she said when someone shows you who they
- 4:54are, believe them the first time.
- 4:57And then, of course, Rachel Maddow, who is a news
- 5:01commentator on MSNBC often says you need to watch what people do
- 5:07and not what they say. And I think that that's those
- 5:10are very helpful admonitions in view of this discussion here
- 5:15today. We have our Republican
- 5:20colleagues swearing that Donald Trump will not do anything to
- 5:26Social Security. And, you know, from your lips to
- 5:28guys ears, let's hope, you know, I'm on your side.
- 5:31I'm hoping that you're right. But we have known that
- 5:37Republicans have long wanted to destroy Social Security and
- 5:42really privatize it. As a matter of fact, former
- 5:47chair of this committee, my good friend Paul Ryan from Wisconsin,
- 5:52openly tried to privatize Social Security.
- 5:56My own Senator Johnson was the first person I ever heard called
- 6:00it a Ponzi scheme long before, before Elon Musk was on the
- 6:06scene. And Mick Mulvaney, during the
- 6:10Trump One administration who was a former chief of staff,
- 6:15testified before the Joint Economic Committee that, yes, we
- 6:19need to go after Social Security because just like Jesse James
- 6:25robbed banks because that's where the money is.
- 6:30And so I am, you know, I'm not convinced that that they're not
- 6:34going to do it. Musk has just basically said we
- 6:37need to go after entitlement spending, which he designates
- 6:41the Social Security and Medicare.
- 6:44So I think that it's important for that our Republican friends
- 6:49not to be willfully ignorant to be useful idiots about this, you
- 6:56know, And so so that's what they say.
- 6:58What the what are they doing? Let's look at that.
- 7:04This this CR that we passed just yesterday.
- 7:08In order to flat fund the operations of the Social
- 7:13Security Administration, we would have had to have added
- 7:15$600 million. Instead of adding the $600.00
- 7:21just to flat fund the agency, they cut it by an additional 100
- 7:25million. That's $700 million.
- 7:28Watch what they do. You know, you're trying to save
- 7:31Social Security, but you want to destroy customer service.
- 7:35We heard of Mr. Estes, the new chairman of the subcommittee,
- 7:39talk about how awful the customer service is.
- 7:42Well, yeah, but that is part of the scheme to undermine Social
- 7:48Security to the point that people lose faith in it.
- 7:52As a matter of fact, Martin O'Neill Malley sent me this
- 7:55text. He says they just want to wreck
- 7:58it so they can rob it. And now with this CR and the
- 8:01mass firings taking place of Social Security as we speak,
- 8:06they are destroying customer service for the American people,
- 8:09driving this agency to collapse and putting at grave and serious
- 8:13risks the monthly benefits of 72 million Americans as the former
- 8:17commissioner of Social Security, Martin O'Malley.
- 8:23And then the President Trump tells us that he's going to cut
- 8:26taxes on Social Security. Well, that really sounds great.
- 8:31Send people, I heard $5000 checks.
- 8:35That really sounds great. And that of course, would help
- 8:38people making twenty, $30,000 immediately.
- 8:41But in the long run, they would be hurt the most and wealthy
- 8:45people would be helped the most. But in the meantime, it would
- 8:49cost the trust fund $1.5 trillion to do that.
- 8:56You know, watch what they do, not what they say.
- 8:59That would undermine Social Security tremendously.
- 9:04The Social Security payment accuracy is about 99 point 8.8%
- 9:11so I don't know how much of waste, fraud and abuse can be
- 9:15found in it. This really the last point that
- 9:20I want to make is that Elon Musk is a tech tycoon and I wondered
- 9:27what the value of this data is to him.
- 9:31It's immeasurable. So this is a serious conflict of
- 9:35interest for this man to have Social Security data when he is
- 9:39a tech tycoon. Numbers time has expired.
- 9:43Thank you so much, Mr. Chairman, for your indulgence, and I yield
- 9:46back. I recognize Mr. Boyle.
