- 0:04>> Dr. Terry Simpson: Today's topic is one we all need
- 0:06to fuel.
- 0:09Don't fad. Let's face
- 0:11it. Fad diets are like the one friend who promises
- 0:14to help you move, but ghosts you. When the truck shows
- 0:17up, they make big promises, but the second
- 0:20you try to follow them, they become unsustainable.
- 0:23And you're stressed and you're hungry
- 0:26and you're wondering where you went wrong.
- 0:30We've all been subject to some food fad, whether it be to
- 0:33lose a bit of weight or hearing about some new
- 0:35superfood. Sometimes when you've had
- 0:38success losing weight on a fad diet, you
- 0:41develop the belief that the fad and
- 0:44its strange rules are what helped you
- 0:46lose weight without the basic biology of
- 0:49you are in a calorie deficit, or you'll be
- 0:52getting the belief that some food is evil. I mean, who
- 0:55really, seriously thinks that a, uh, rhesus cup is
- 0:58evil? Today, we will
- 1:00uncover why fueling your body is better
- 1:03than falling for the hype. And how to build a
- 1:06sustainable way of eating. And why
- 1:09chickpeas could be your new best friend.
- 1:15I'm Dr. Terri Simpson, your chief medical
- 1:17explanationist, and this is for
- 1:20Q Fork University, where we
- 1:23bust myths, make sense of the madness, and
- 1:25teach a little bit about food and medicine.
- 1:31You know how those junk emails scream
- 1:33you've won a million dollars? Or here's
- 1:36some new secret to losing weight. And you open
- 1:39it and you find a list of impossible things to jump
- 1:42through. Those are basically like fad
- 1:45diets. They promise a quick fix,
- 1:48losing lots of weight, feeling better,
- 1:51sleeping better, making your
- 1:53genitals work better. But instead,
- 1:56they often leave you hangry,
- 1:58frustrating, and regretting every
- 2:01kale smoothie you've ever tasted.
- 2:04Here's why fad diets fail harder than a
- 2:07souffle in a windstorm. They make you fear
- 2:09food, like carbs are evil or. Or
- 2:12fat is the enemy, or fruits have too much
- 2:15sugar. Fad diets love turning food
- 2:18into the bad guy, the villain in a superhero
- 2:21movie. But food isn't the enemy.
- 2:24It's your hero. Well,
- 2:27maybe, maybe not. Gas station nachos, but
- 2:29that's a whole other story. Fad
- 2:32diets are kind of like Sisyphus trying to push
- 2:35that boulder uphill. You might lose weight
- 2:38at first, but. But as soon as you stop, that
- 2:41boulder comes crashing back down. And no
- 2:44one has time for yo yos unless you're a professional
- 2:46juggler. And most fad diets simply
- 2:49ignore science. It's almost like they were
- 2:52invented by people who failed high school biology.
- 2:55Things like, don't eat after 7pm because your metabolism
- 2:58takes a nap. Please. Your metabolism
- 3:00doesn't even have a bedtime. And the fad
- 3:03diets are the bad influencers of nutrition.
- 3:06We need to stop following
- 3:09them. Instead,
- 3:11let's focus on the good stuff,
- 3:14fueling your body and building a
- 3:17healthy relationship with food.
- 3:19Think of food as a reliable friend. Not one who
- 3:22ditches you, but one who shows up when you need them
- 3:25the most. Food doesn't need to be
- 3:28feared, avoided, or treated like a, uh,
- 3:30guilty pleasure. Every bite you take,
- 3:33even that slice of pizza, can serve a purpose.
- 3:36And your body will make it serve a purpose.
- 3:39It's not about perfection. It's about giving
- 3:42your body the energy and the nutrients it needs to
- 3:45thrive. Fad diets love the
- 3:47extremes. Cut out all the carbs, eat only
- 3:50grapefruit, drink cabbage juice. But
- 3:52truly, what you need in your life is balance.
- 3:56It's okay to have cake at your friend's birthday.
- 3:59It's okay to have a hearty salad. It's
- 4:02about patterns, not individual meals.
- 4:05Life is way too short to skip the cake.
- 4:08Unless it's tres leches. I have tried
- 4:11about 100 tres leches cakes in my life, and I have
- 4:14found two that I love, but I
- 4:17keep trying. So your body does have
- 4:20hunger and fullness cues for a reason.
- 4:23The problem? Well,
- 4:26sometimes we abuse it, and sometimes
- 4:29what happens is we lose the ability to
- 4:31get those cues right.
- 4:35Fad diets are like trying to drive
- 4:38with your gps screaming, recalculating.
- 4:41Instead, we want to start listening to what
- 4:44your body needs from a more
- 4:47healthy perspective. I mean, your
- 4:50body's not going to ask you for a triple cheeseburger every meal.
- 4:53Speaking of fad shaming, let's talk about how
- 4:56to actually fuel your body in a manner that has been
- 4:59based in science, based on years and years
- 5:02of data of science. So I want you to think of
- 5:05these foods as the avengers of nutrition,
- 5:08not the Justice League, each one
- 5:10playing a key role in keeping you strong and
- 5:13healthy. You don't need to take a lot
- 5:17of extra stuff. Let's talk about
- 5:19fruit. Fruits are like the sweet friend that always
- 5:22makes you smile. They're packed with vitamins,
- 5:25antioxidants, fiber,
- 5:27and sugar just to keep you energized.
- 5:31So kind of a minimum amount we like to aim for is about 9
- 5:33ounces or 250 grams. So take a
- 5:36couple ideas here. Pair an apple with
- 5:39nut butter or peanut butter. It's like PB and
- 5:42J. Toss some berries into your oatmeal,
- 5:45and boom, instant upgrade.
- 5:48One of my latest favorites today are
- 5:51figs. They're filled with fiber.
- 5:54They really don't disturb your blood sugar that much, and
- 5:57they are delicious. Eat a couple of those and your
- 6:00sweet tooth is satisfied. Now,
- 6:02vegetables I always have a hard time with because I
- 6:05grew up in an era where the only vegetables we could get
- 6:08in Ketchikan, Alaska, came in a can.
- 6:11You can imagine. In the 1960s, canned vegetables
- 6:14weren't exactly something that you would look forward to.
- 6:17My mother tried hard to hide them in spaghetti sauce
- 6:20or chilies. But vegetables truly are the most
- 6:23valuable player of your plate. They're low in calories, high in
- 6:25nutrients, versus old enough to keep things interesting.
- 6:29One of the things that I have found as someone who doesn't like
- 6:32vegetables is roasting them
- 6:35in olive oil and garlic and sometimes taking
- 6:38those root vegetables and roasting them and then putting
- 6:41them into a sauce.
- 6:43Spinach is one of those funny things that you can add to
- 6:46like a dal, which is a great lentil
- 6:49soup, and you don't know what's there. And it
- 6:51adds that bit of goodness to things.
- 6:55Here's one that's a little easier. It used to
- 6:58be white bread and white pasta were about the
- 7:01only thing you could find. And I
- 7:04remember zoodles and all these people on these low
- 7:06carb diets trying to find some excuse for a
- 7:09noodle or make legume noodles. And they're all out there.
- 7:12But what has happened is whole grains are
- 7:15now available in pastas and breads.
- 7:18And whole grains are like that friend who helps you move.
- 7:21They give you steady, reliable energy. They're full
- 7:24of fiber, they're full of thiamine. They keep you
- 7:27full and your digestion working like a
- 7:30well oiled machine. Maybe I shouldn't say well
- 7:33oiled machine with digestion that just may not work.
- 7:35Well, let me give you an example.
- 7:38A bowl of oatmeal. Remember the oatmeal
- 7:41with the, uh, fruit? Add some
- 7:44nuts. What a great breakfast. How about
- 7:46dinner? You know, the other day there
- 7:49was this quinoa brown rice
- 7:52bowl made with a curry sauce that was
- 7:54absolutely delicious. I am going to try and reproduce
- 7:57that fish twice a week. Now, some
- 8:00of you don't like fish, and I can understand that because most of you
- 8:03have had rotten fish. And once you've had rotten fish, it kind of puts you off.
- 8:06But believe me, fresh fish, there's nothing like it. And
- 8:08fresh fish can be bought today at the grocery store because
- 8:11we have FedEx and UPS and
- 8:14great tracking fish are the undisputed
- 8:17king of Omega 3. Fatty acids, keeping your
- 8:20brain sharp, keeping your kids brain sharp.
- 8:23And it tastes a lot better than any supplement.
- 8:26It's pretty easy. Making a dinner of grilled salmon with a little bit
- 8:29of lemon roasted vegetables. And I like
- 8:32baking my salmon at about 400 degrees.
- 8:35Takes about 10 minutes. And how do I bake it?
- 8:37Salt, pepper. I throw on either
- 8:41maple syrup and, um, olive
- 8:43oil and a squeeze of lemon. Tuna
- 8:46salad is great for lunch. I make it with olive
- 8:49oil instead of mayonnaise, and I pile it on a whole
- 8:52grain toast. Works great. Olive
- 8:55oil, as we said many times, is kind of that liquid
- 8:58gold. It's far better than butter.
- 9:01It's the fat you wanted your life in the
- 9:04old days. And I'm meaning 80,
- 9:0690 years ago, if you
- 9:09had heart disease and lived in the Mediterranean,
- 9:12the pharmacist would give you some olive oil. Why?
- 9:15We don't know. Does it work? We don't know. But
- 9:18clearly people who add olive oil to their
- 9:21diet have less problems with second heart
- 9:23attacks. But olive oil works well. Drizzle
- 9:26on salads, roasted vegetables,
- 9:29even that great whole grain bread. And
- 9:32making your own dressing is easy because once you have your salad
- 9:34assembled, put the olive oil on first. You don't have to try and
- 9:37make up a, uh, vinaigrette. Put the olive oil first,
- 9:40then drizzle on some lemon juice or
- 9:43maybe some balsamic vinegar. And then add
- 9:46something like za'atar, a little bit of salt and
- 9:49mix it up. You can even put a spoonful or two of
- 9:52honey or maple syrup to make it a little bit sweeter.
- 9:55Legumes unlimited and
- 9:58amazing chickpeas.
- 10:01Lentils. They are something that
- 10:04the vegans and the vegetarians found, and I don't know why
- 10:06they kept them a secret for so long. But clearly us
- 10:09omnivores discovered hummus. But roasted
- 10:12chickpeas are probably one of the greatest
- 10:15treats that you can make, whether you air fry them, whether you bake
- 10:18them. You know what, you can even deep fry chickpeas,
- 10:21and they're frigging amazing. Hummus
- 10:24is like the dip that brought
- 10:26America into the world of legumes. Now,
- 10:29legumes are still beans. Typically, my Saturday
- 10:32morning breakfast consists of some beans with
- 10:35a little great hot sauce with it. I
- 10:38find that beans are a wonderful accompaniment. Uh,
- 10:42so you need to sort of
- 10:45put away the fads and start with
- 10:48the fuels.
- 10:49Okay, Speaking of fads, I need
- 10:52to pick on the carnivore diet again. The carnivore
- 10:55diet. Who says? No fruits, no veggies, just meat. That's
- 10:58like trying to survive on coffee and memes. It
- 11:01sounds fun until you crash. Here's why. The carnivore diet is
- 11:04about as sustainable as a paper straw and hot coffee.
- 11:07It lacks the essential nutrients. It lacks fiber. It
- 11:09lacks antioxidants. Diets high in red meat
- 11:12and processed meats increase your risk of heart disease and
- 11:15colon cancer. It's restrictive, it's boring,
- 11:18and let's face it, your colon deserves better.
- 11:21If you're looking for a long term healthy way to eat the
- 11:24Mediterranean diet, the Dash diet, or simply
- 11:27focusing on this, fuel don't
- 11:30fad is the way to go.
- 11:32So here's a few tips to get started.
- 11:35I want you to plan meals around fruits and vegetables and whole
- 11:38grains. I want you to stock up on pantry
- 11:41staples like legumes and olive oil. I want you to
- 11:44think and give fish a try a couple times a week. Even if it's tuna
- 11:47fish or shrimp or lobster, I don't
- 11:50care. And stop stressing about perfection.
- 11:52A slice of pizza isn't going to ruin you.
- 11:56Some might say that pineapple on pizza might ruin
- 11:58you. I say you're adding fruit and how bad is
- 12:01fruit? Eating well doesn't have to be a
- 12:04chore or a punishment.
- 12:07And focusing on refueling your body with nutrient
- 12:10dense foods like fruits and vegetables and whole grains and
- 12:13legumes, you'll feel better, you'll
- 12:16look better, and you're going to laugh about how you
- 12:19used to stress about carbs. Remember
- 12:21fuel? Don't fad. Life's too short
- 12:24to follow a diet that makes you miserable. Instead, focus
- 12:27on balance and variety and food that makes you feel
- 12:30good and happy. Please

- 12:38this podcast was researched and written
- 12:41by me, Dr. Terry Simpson. And while I am a
- 12:44doctor, I am not your
- 12:46doctor. Please consult a board certified doctor
- 12:49and a registered dietitian before making any dietary
- 12:52changes because they know your health conditions best.
- 12:55Please don't go to a life coach or to a
- 12:58chiropractor. Getting advice about nutrition
- 13:01from them is kind of like, oh,
- 13:04I don't even know what it's like. It's terrible.
- 13:06The podcast was produced with Producer Girl
- 13:09Productions and distributed by her friends at Simpler Media
- 13:12and my good friend the pod God, Mr.
- 13:15Evo Terra. Have a good week everybody.
- 13:18Remember fuel don't
- 13:20fad.
- 13:26Hey Evo, what's in your fuel
- 13:28today? I think
- 13:31our fuel is going to be.
- 13:34I don't know. I do miss
- 13:37Tarbels there in Phoenix.
- 13:39Have a good week, buddy. Hi to the missus.
- 13:45Yeesh.
- 13:46>> Speaker B: My fuel. This day is,
- 13:49uh, rough. I've had nothing
- 13:51but coffee. Yeah, coffee. That's
- 13:54not enough. I know, I know, I know. So, uh, I
- 13:57probably should figure out something to do for lunch. And I guess
- 14:00it needs to be healthy or you're gonna yell at me.
